GALAXIE 500 This Is Our Music LP
2019 repress. "After producing two albums celebrated by a thirsty underground network of fans, Galaxie 500 released what turned out to be their unexpected swansong, This Is Our Music. The title is an intentionally declarative statement. After being labeled masters of the disengaged and forlorn, Damon Krukowski, Dean Wareham, and Naomi Yang delivered a full-length comprised of their most stately material. Here, one can hear potential realized, as well as changes afoot. For the first time since its original pressing, This Is Our Music is available again on vinyl. Cut by vinyl ace Kevin Gray from a remaster by Kramer and Alan Douches, the album sounds more vibrant than ever, and Galaxie 500 exists again as one of the most enrapturing and glorious bands to emerge from the underground in the past 25 years."

BIG TIDE Sync Or Swim CD
Founded by Liverpool native Ben Thomas in 2017, Big Tide was born out of Thomas's disillusionment with the electronic music scene. His previous output as French house producer L'Etranger spanned for six years gaining attention from the likes of Clash Magazine, Earmilk, and Amazing Radio, amongst others. The impetus to form this new project came in 2013 while touring with Spectrals as lead guitarist. A stay in Paris was the final catalyst for a change in musical direction when Ben picked up his 12-string and the chiming sound of Big Tide was born. The second single "Hide Me In Your Spaceship" features drums by Jonathan Nash, former drummer for Hookworms and guitarist for Cowtown. Thomas sings in his signature northern vocal style whilst shimmering 12-string guitars form the cornerstone of the Big Tide sound. Taking cues from bands like Big Star and Teenage Fanclub, Big Tide's music blends elements from '60s power pop, like The Byrds, and the '70s folk rock of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

MATTA, RAMUNTCHO 96 CD
The poet, producer, and visual artist Ramuntcho Matta comes back to music with 96. 96 -- as in 96 hours were needed to record this new album. Ramuntcho points out that behind this dazzling recording, years of experience enabled him to achieve the mix of spontaneity and intimacy of the album. He was the man behind the success of Elli Medeiros's "Toi Mon Toit" (1986). As a matter of fact, Ramuntcho Matta likes to put artists in the spotlight, as he has done with Brion Gysin, Don Cherry, and many others. However, this time he decided to put himself in the spotlight with a record that sounds very '90s -- with a wink to Bill Laswell for the bass -- but still very contemporary. The album unveils a dark atmosphere, as if Alain Bashung had lost himself in a Lynch film. Record sleeve designed by Ramuntcho Matta. Unpublished notes and drawings from the artist's logbook Desseins Du Jour. CD version comes in a digipack; includes 12-page booklet.

KOMENDAREK, WLADYSLAW Retrospektywny (Retrospective) LP
Akuphone presents a compilation of W?adys?aw Komendarek, the Polish genius of synthesizers. This selection comes from three albums released between 1987 and 1990, a very important political and social period in Poland, marked by the last convulsions of communism. Komendarek's music offers a unique patchwork of synthesizer sounds, "art of noise", and cosmic flights far beyond the realm of conventions that dominated the Polish electronic music scene at the time. It brings a weird mixture of electronic, proto-techno, Eurodance, and progressive music. Instrumentalist and composer, W?adys?aw Komendarek (born in 1948 in Sochaczew, Poland) was a member of the legendary group Exodus between 1973-1983. But the pioneering achievements of Komendarek in the field of electronic music were revealed with glory in the 1980s with the start of his solo career. Equipped with various analog synthesizers -- some even self-manufactured -- he began to explore the sounds of the Earth and the Cosmos. Intensely drawn to electronic instruments, he tried to use them to their maximum capacity. For over forty years now, he has been a restless and tireless seeker of beyond-the-earthly sounds hiding in synthesizers which he has tried to reveal to the world. Thanks to their richness, the liner notes provide an immersion into the Polish electronic music scene. Written by the musical journalist ?ukasz Kom?a, liner notes include a text on W?adys?aw Komendarek, a brief history of electronic music in Poland, an unpublished interview of the artist, a short biography, and a paper on the Social and political context in Poland in the '80s. Includes printed inner sleeve with liner notes in Polish and English; includes download code.

GORDON & THE ALCHEMY DUBS ALLSTARS, VIN Bowl Go, Packy Come 12"
Alchemy Dubs present a special collaboration with legendary Jamaican trombone player Vin Gordon. "Bowl go, packy come" is an old Jamaican proverb equivalent to "what goes around comes around", or in a more positive form "one good turn deserves another". On this EP, it symbolizes the migrations and cultural exchanges between Jamaica and UK. The EP contains two up-tempo instrumental tracks that are a mix of classic Jamaican sounds with a UK influence. Each track comes with its own dub version mixed analog live by Ojah in traditional fashion.

PHEROMOANS, THE County Lines LP
For the last twelve years, The Pheromoans have occupied their own peculiar niche in the UK's DIY music scene. County Lines is their fifth full-length and takes in each aspect of their past sonically, providing a wry tonic for today's heady exhaustion. More of life's banalities and stale daydreams are given a good airing in Russel Walker's lyrics. Delivered with the usual droll lethargy, he's a septic entertainer par excellence who teases out just enough of the very real horror of the UK's current predicament to keep his aggrievements charming. At times -- see "Troll Attack" -- it's a crushing lament. County Lines weaves Walker in and out of meandering guitars and crude drum machines that waltz and tumble with live drums. Brittle synths light the way to the album's aggravated sections, which ever so gently hark back to the group's earliest recordings. The penultimate piece, "Ultra Skies", offers the clearest trace of The Pheromoans' past. The frenzy edges us into a reverberating trance, pulling a sucker punch like an inconclusive nightmare. Orange vinyl.

HEY COLOSSUS Four Bibles CD
Hey Colossus are one of Europe's great live bands. Since 2003 the six-piece has been driving around the continent with their "pirate ship" backline of broken amps and triple-guitar drang, elevating audiences in every type of venue imaginable; a doctor's waiting room in Salford, an industrial unit in Liege, and a vast field next to a river in Portugal. Four Bibles is their twelfth studio album and the first to be released by London label Alter. Recorded by Ben Turner at Space Wolf Studios in Somerset, it's their most direct album yet and follows a well-documented trajectory of evolution that began (in the truest sense) with 2011's RRR (REPOSE 063LP) for Riot Season and continued across three albums for Rocket Recordings. Lead vocalist Paul Sykes sounds more in focus than before, dialing down the effects and using reverb/delay to carry his lyrics rather than smother. The band has also fine-tuned to leave some room for extra depth. Piano, electronics, and violin (by Daniel O'Sullivan of This Is Not This Heat and Grumbling Fur) all find a way in amongst a familiar mesh of interlacing guitars, wrapped round a taut rhythm section. Like every other Hey Colossus record before, the line-up has altered and the sounds reflect this. From the weight of "Memory Gore", to the subtlety and swag of "It's A Low", via the sonic extremes of "Palm Hex/Arndale Chins" this is exactly as the band are live; raging and rail-roading but somehow in control. Grooves for those who want to dance or for those who want to hug a wall and nod... bleak dystopian imagery submerged in relentless rhythms and low-end rattle. The songs breath life and soul -- Hey Colossus have never sounded fresher or more on point.

COMFORT Not Passing LP
Debut physical release by brother/sister duo Comfort. Based in Glasgow, Comfort combine aggressively attacked live drums with industrial electronics and synths with Natalie Comfort's raging vocals -- brutal, honest, poetic, visceral, angry, and beautiful. A critique of gender norms and societal constructs but mostly a vulnerable, powerful personal perspective from outside the majority, Not Passing presents a crucial voice. Recorded in Glasgow by Helena Celle (Anxiety, Otherworld), a minimalist/maximalist formation with stark, thundering drumbeats often accompanying a simple synth line or bit-crushed sample. Each track tumbles forward, powered by Natalie Comfort's invective, sometimes painfully vulnerable and at others completely empowering. Includes 12-page lyric booklet and obi strip. Edition of 300.

STEREO UNDERGROUND The Art of Silence LP
It's often said that the gaps in between the notes are as important as the notes themselves. Stereo Underground pays homage to that attitude on his magical debut album, The Art Of Silence, immersing the listener in widescreen atmospherics, succinct, spacious arrangements, and stunning melody throughout. This wonderful record for Balance Music follows previous full-length artist albums on the Australian label from the likes of Clarian and Brian Cid. Born in Haifa, in the North of Israel, the artist otherwise known as Yariv Etzion began his musical life as a drummer, spending his younger years circulating in the city's hard rock scene. He discovered electronic music as a teenager when he moved to Tel Aviv, and soon began working at a record shop and DJing. His popularity rapidly grew, and production soon followed. His output as Stereo Underground began 2009, and in his debut year he received high praise from MixMag and heavy DJ support for his hypnotic, progressive sounds. The project has always shown a great sense of musicality and ambition, and this full-length debut album is the natural culmination of his efforts over the last decade. "An album, in my opinion, is the holy grail for a musician," he says. "I waited 38 years to give myself the peace of mind I needed to do so. It took me ten months of writing, recording, sound design and mixing to create the final result." That meant doing so in both the mental and physical sense. He took the decision to relocate to a wooden house in the countryside to create this stunning album, turning down incredibly high-profile festival bookings plus remix offers and release requests in order to dedicate himself to his vision. It's an admirable approach that has yielded dividends. From the conceptual, ambient tones of opener "Flying Glow (Prologue)" through to the spine-tingling, airy breakbeats of closer "For A Moment Of Truth", this is a record full of slow-burning nuance and hypnotic progressions that induce a dream-like state in the listener. There are mellow piano tones on "The Art Of Silence", Moderat-tinged indie/dance crossover on "Little Red Head", which features Sealine, and trancey euphoria on "Above The Sea Of Fog". "Echoes" plunges into deeper territory and "Breakfast On Mars" gives a hazy, beatless breather mid-way through.

The album's thrilling first single "Chain Of Being", was recently Lamacq's Livener on 6 Music, and is a real statement: a widescreen slice of post-punk that combines heaviness and brooding melody in equal measures. Joe Talbot said the following of his decision to sign Crows to his Balley Records label: "I saw them play at the Louisiana in Bristol a few years ago and both the performance and the quality of their songs blew me away. MAIOLI & NIRODH FORTINI, WALTER Taraxacum CD
An amazing adventure of a musicological and botanical research on the psychoacoustic qualities of the green world. It's the investigation of an organic symbiosis, real and mysterious at the same time, between the pharmacological properties of the plant and the sound emitted by the same material essence. From the single natural element comes the vibration permeating the whole universe; an indissoluble binomial for which "everything that makes up existence contains the information of itself in all its parts". Here, the visionary Walter Maioli (Aktuala, Futuro Antico, Synaulia) collaborates with the music therapist and eclectic composer Agostino Nirodh Fortini, for more than thirty years specialist in the field of sound and video applied to body therapies and meditation. By exposing the archetype breath of the stem, slowing its speed and manipulating and filtering it electronically, the two explorers create a bath of harmonic games with purifying and regenerating powers; a deep and nebulous drone inhabited by insects, alien sounds similar to the vibrates of Fender Rhodes or tonal interludes with plays of stones in water, on the surface of an inner lake, learning to observe and dive into love and awareness.

SOUNDS OF LIBERATION Sounds of Liberation CD
Hailing from the Germantown section of Philadelphia, well known as the site of the Sun Ra Arkestra communal homestead, Sounds of Liberation were at the forefront of '70s Black liberation music. After a series of gigs in elementary schools, prisons, and community centers, the band travelled along with their manager George Gilmore (father of Linc Gilmore of Breakwater fame) to NYC in 1973 for a recording session at Columbia University. This five-song session has never been heard until now. Had it ever been issued, it would have followed on the band's debut, New Horizons, released on Dogtown Records in 1972. Sounds of Liberation formed in early 1970, initially lead by vibraphonist Warren Robert Cheeseboro, aka Khan Jamal, but it wasn't until the eventual arrival of Byard Lancaster that the band's prospects started to take off. Lancaster was a master at making a deal. This deal-making lead to more gigs and more recognition, especially from local newspapers. Sounds of Liberation was more of a community than a band at times and because of that spirit there was a strong desire by the entire group to work with schoolchildren as well as inmates. They did just that, and continued to do so throughout the early to mid-70s. Released briefly in 2018 as a special edition of 100 copies by Brewerytown Beats, the music on Sounds of Liberation has never been heard before. Shoulder-deep in groove juice, it's a record with heavy ostinato and beautiful backbeats, including the mellowing influence of Jamal's vibes and the incisive guitar of Monette Sudler, the final track featuring an unidentified vocal group singing a stone-cold soul hit, also featuring some searing saxophone courtesy of Mr. Lancaster. A treasure for fans of so-called spiritual jazz and free funk, Sounds of Liberation is a snapshot of its era and equally an inspiration in ours. The package comes with never seen photos of the band and a cover design by artist LeRoy Butler, who worked with the SoL in the era, at the same time he was designing records for Sun Ra. Lovingly coaxed from long-unplayed original tapes, Sounds of Liberation is a new line item in the soul improvisation pantheon.Personnel: Byard Lancaster - flute, alto saxophone; Khan Jamal - vibraphone; Monnette Sudler - guitar; Billy Mills - bass; Dwight James - drums; Rashid Salime - congos; Omar Hill - percussion; vocalists on "New Horizon/Backstreets of Heaven" are unidentified. ZETTERBERG & THE GREAT QUESTION, TORBJORN Live CD
If you've missed out on bassist Torbjörn Zetterberg, now's your chance to play some catch up ball. He's one of creative music's most eloquent exponents, having emerged from the fertile Swedish jazz scene around 2005. With his band Torbjörn Zetterberg Hot Five, he began a fruitful relationship with the thoroughly excellent Moserobie label, run by his frequent band mate, saxophonist Jonas Kullhammar, and by the time he was making records like Skildrar Kvinnans Kamp and Och Den Stora Frågen, Corbett Vs. Dempsey were completely hooked. Zetterberg is a Mingus for our times. He's a composer of unusual means -- great sense for how to harmonize his inventive melodies; how to make a sextet sound like a big band and how to clear space for an unaccompanied solo; his slightly devious sense of humor underlying all the drive and swing that make the best in a bass player; and best of all a respect for his musicians, who have always found ways to push his great compositions up a notch. This luminous set of tracks was recorded in performance at Stockholm's famed Jazzclub Fasching. It presents a newly named ensemble, Torbjörn Zetterberg & The Great Question, with Kullhammar and Alberto Pinton on saxophones and clarinets, Portuguese trumpeter Susana Santos Silva, trombonist Mats Äleklint, and drummer Jon Fält. With the exception of the opening passage, which adapts the traditional "Cherry Tree Carol", all compositions are by Zetterberg, and they make a solid case for him as a jazz writer to be taken seriously. Joyful, powerful, irreverent, and utterly fearless, The Great Question presents its case, answers the initial query, and asks more probing ones. Gatefold packaging features artwork by Karl Wirsum, one of the original Hairy Who painters of Chicago fame, and a portrait of Zetterberg by photographer Peter Gannushkin.Personnel: Torbjörn Zetterberg - double bass; Susana Santos Silva - trumpet, tin whistle; Mats Äleklint - trombone, harmonica; Jonas Kullhammar - tenor saxophone, flute; Alberto Pinton - baritone saxophone, clarinet, flute; Jon Fält - drums.

VA Option 1 2CD
Since 2015, Chicago's Experimental Sound Studio has been the host of Option, a series of intimate concerts of improvised music. Featuring an uncommonly wide range of players representing virtually all haunts of free music, the series has fostered not only an important exchange of ideas in musical form, but it has also promoted literal conversation about the music, usually substituting a dialogue with the musician or musicians for the requisite second set. In 2018, the series was funded by a consortium of major international art galleries, each of whom underwrote a month of events. As is always the case at ESS, the music was recorded, and in the end an astonishing archive of tapes was produced, from which 15 tracks were selected and programmed onto two CDs for Option 1, the first compilation of the series. The artists featured on the program are Susan Alcorn (lap steel guitarist and winner of the 2018 Instant Award in Improvised Music), the Chicago-based team of Lou Mallozzi & Douglas Ewart (Lunch With Money), veteran percussionist Gerry Hemingway, Norwegian pianist Håvard Wiik, Luke Stewart, Louise Dam Eckardt Jensen & Kent Kessler, trumpeter Greg Kelley, Ben Goldberg & Michael Coleman, Bonnie Jones, the impossible piano of Kris Davis, Wayne Horvitz & Sara Schoenbeck, saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock, Chattanooga's own LaDonna Smith, Booker Stardrum, Beth McDonald & Dave Rempis, and young guitar sensation Sandy Ewen. By turns haunting, abrasive, lyrical, absurd, bracing, and hilarious, Option 1 in fact offers many different options -- a smorgasbord of alternatives representing the exciting, multifaceted reality of free music in its contemporary manifestation.

ICP TENTET Tetterettet CD
Corbett Vs. Dempsey present a reissue of ICP Tentet's Tetterettet, originally released in 1977. Recorded in 1977, the Instant Composers Pool's Tetterettet is the first classic of the band's larger incarnations. Assembled out of elements recorded live in Uithoorn, Utrecht, and the band's home base of Amsterdam, with Misha Mengelberg using a cut-and-paste collage method akin to Teo Macero's work with Miles Davis, the record features an all-star lineup that added three leading lights of free music: bassist Alan Silva and saxophonists John Tchicai and Peter Brötzmann. In this period, Brötzmann made the long train trip from Wuppertal, Germany, to A'dam on a weekly basis to rehearse with ICP, bassist Silva coming in from Paris. Well known for his work in pioneer creative music ensembles such as the New York Art Quartet and the New York Contemporary Five and on John Coltrane's Ascention (1976), Tchicai was the Paul Desmond of free jazz, with a softer, more subtle phraseology than many of his peers. These international figures joined pianist Mengelberg and drummer Han Bennink -- whose ICP co-founder Willem Breuker had broken off to form what would become his long-time working band, the Kollektief -- and their outrageous, hyper-inventive big band. Michel Waiswicz, who invented the crackle box, a user-friendly, portable electronic instrument, is a defining presence on Mengelberg's multipart "Tetterettet," and along with the heavyweight out-of-towners the band includes composer, oboist, and saxophonist Gilius Van Bergeyk, whose sequence of compositions nestle perfectly into Misha's, Han's gifted brother Peter Bennink on saxes, trombonist Bert Koppelaar, and cellist Tristan Honsinger, who has continued to work with the ensemble even after Misha's death in 2017. One of the landmark records of Mengelberg tunes, with classics like "Rumboon" and "Alexander's Marschbefehel", Tetterettet presents a program full of musical surprises, intelligence, and ICP's own brand of uproarious humor. A shaggy masterpiece, available here for the first time as a stand-alone CD, remastered from the original tapes, with Han Bennink's original cover design and a contemporaneous photo from the archives of Gérard Rouy.ICP Tentet: Misha Mengelberg - piano; John Tchicai - alto and soprano saxophone; Gilius van Bergeyk - alto saxophone, oboe; Peter Bennink - alto and sopranino saxophone; Peter Brötzmann - alto, tenor and baritone saxophone; Bert Koppelaar - trombone; Tristan Honsinger - cello; Michel Waisvisz - crackle box; Alan Silva - bass; Han Bennink - drums, bass clarinet.

PUKWANA/HAN BENNINK/MISHA MENGELBERG, DUDU Yi Yole CD
Corbett Vs. Dempsey present a reissue of Dudu Pukwana, Han Bennink and Misha Mengelberg's Yi Yole, originally released in 1979. Recorded at the ICP Jubileum, a festival in Uithoorn, Holland, in 1978, Yi Yole brings together the core of the Instant Composers Pool -- pianist Misha Mengelberg and drummer Han Bennink -- with legendary South African alto saxophonist Dudu Pukwana. Longtime member of the Blue Notes, Pukwana was a beloved figure in European free music after he left South Africa in the mid-sixties and settled in London. There he worked with all of the leading lights of free improvised music, recording extensively with the Brotherhood of Breath and eventually releasing LPs under his own leadership before his untimely passing in 1990 at the age of 51. What the three tracks on Yi Yole make clear is how surprisingly well the Dutch and South African sensibilities fit together, an overall relaxed vibe leading to unforeseen directions in the music. Han Bennink ranges far beyond his drum kit and its metallic add-ons, playing trombone, clarinet, and viola; his collage design for the record, as with all ICP productions, is brilliant and perfectly matched to the music. This is the only time these three prime movers of free music would record as a trio, hitting just at the moment when the Instant Composers Pool was gaining momentum and South African jazz was growing in international stature. Released on ICP, Mengelberg/Bennink's self-produced label, Yi Yole saw limited distribution and attention in its time, but it remains an absolute classic of improvised music, presented here in all its glory with Bennink's design, remastered from original tapes, the box of which is reproduced on the interior spread, replete with never-seen hand notations.Personnel: Dudu Pukwana - alto saxophone, whistle; Misha Mengelberg - piano; Han Bennink - drums, clarinet, viola, trombone.

They created an abstract universe where minimal post-punk basslines blend together with radio sounds in "Nothing Toulouse", tropical tribal vibes oscillates between futuristic nostalgia and hunted dreams in "Ketama" and "Ritz", a sampled heartbeat slowly mutates in mesmerizing midnight jazz and a drugged-out dub groove of "Kamayacha" transforms into the inner city blues of "Josaphat". Although rooted in the club, Bronze opens with the twisted, neo-noir ripple of mind-blurring cut, "Tilt", before drawing on the pulsing synths of "Signal", the raw dub-weight of the booming title-track and the rich, ear-worm melodies and insatiable club swing of emphatic final jam, "Polymer".

BIG JOANIE Sistahs LP
2019 repress, purple vinyl. The first record in the Daydream Library series is London's black feminist punk band Big Joanie's debut album Sistahs. Big Joanie are Stephanie Phillips (singer/guitarist), Estella Adeyeri (bass) and Chardine Taylor-Stone (drums). The band formed in 2013 and released their first EP, Sistah Punk in 2014 and the single Crooked Room in 2016. As part of London's thriving DIY punk scene Big Joanie have played with locals Shopping, toured with US punks Downtown Boys, and Dutch punk band The Ex. Inspired by The Ronettes, Nirvana, Breeders, and Jesus and Mary Chain, Big Joanie have described themselves as being "similar to The Ronettes filtered through '80s DIY and Riot Grrrl with a sprinkling of dashikis." Big Joanie recorded Sistahs at Hermitage Works Studio with producer Margo Broom. The album title derives from the band's belief in sisterhood and female friendship. One of the main reasons for coming together was to create an atmosphere to be "completely ourselves as black women and discover what was possible to realize in those spaces." The album cover features Steph's mum Joan, whom the band is named after, and her aunt on holiday in Wales. The Daydream Library Series of records and tapes is the independent house label of Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) and Eva Prinz's publishing imprint Ecstatic Peace Library. The Daydream Series was established in 2018 to provide a label for emerging musicians, both local and international. In this series curated by Prinz, Moore, and Abby Banks, a limited edition number of vinyl or cassette albums will be released in a pristine "collector's edition" package with the highest quality recordings, impeccable design and handmade fanzines with the album's liner notes and interviews with the bands. Sistahs is an optimistic album about friendship, melancholic memories, and the belief in a modern future. Eva and Thurston discovered Big Joanie playing live supporting The Ex in Islington (London) earlier this spring and ran to the merch table to discover the band didn't have a record with all the songs that had just mesmerized the audience.

VIVIANKRIST Cross Modulation LP
Japanese crust punk and grindcore icon Eri Fuzz-Kristiansen, aka Gallhammer's Viviankrist, keeps the curveballs coming on Diagonal with a bloodied mastication of charred noise and rhythmic electronics, following up the label's acclaimed sides by Sote (DIAG 054LP) and Not Waving/Jim O'Rourke (DIAG 049EP). Co-released with the metal-minded Ritual Productions label, Cross Modulation is a brutal testament to the acridly personalized sound that Viviankrist has explored solo since 1995 in Tokyo, when she performing vocals, sax and SP-202 sampler in her first industrial/noise unit. 23 years later her music is still sorely raw, yet riddled with a new found poignance and atmospheric unease that places her music sometimes as close to Kali Malone's see-sawing dissonance as the power electronics of Pan Sonic or the possessed pulses of Conrad Schnitzler and Merzbow. Since the demise of Eri's main project Gallhammer at the start of this decade, when she moved from Tokyo to Oslo (home of her husband and bandmate in Sehnsucht, Maniac -- also former vocalist for BM legends Mayhem), she returned to her early Viviankrist alias from 2017 as a place to express her primitivist-futurist urges, resulting a trio of CDs including the vicious solo strike of Morgenrøde for Cold Spring Records (CSR 268CD). Now on Cross Modulation she intuitively tempers that album's phosphorous burn with a deadly incisive application of what black metal/techno pioneer Black Mecha terms "mentation electronics". Alloying avant-metal with rhythmic noise, ambient techno and mind-bending drone to a metallurgic tang, Cross Modulation serves a dense flux of energies in seven parts, piercing a path thru maelstrom electronics in "Eleventh" to churn up grizzled Vainio-esque rhythms in "Blue Iron", while the tenderly bruised ambience of "Midnight Sun" provides a bittersweet palette cleanser for the tart technoid prang of "Insects", a bout of slow gripping psychedelia in "Out Of Body", and the rugged North European pastoralism of "Behind Mirror".

MORRICONE, ENNIO Ruba Al Prossimo Tuo CD
Digitmovies presents a reissue of Ennio Morricone's soundtrack for Ruba Al Prossimo Tuo, a 1968 film by Francesco "Citto" Maselli. The 1995 GDM Music compilation With Love presented a collection of love themes by Ennio Morricone. One theme, from Ruba Al Prossimo Tuo, was enclosed directly transferred from the music track of the movie itself, but the source was in such terrible conditions that did not make it possible to create a CD master. An expanded suite (from the same disputable source) was later enclosed on a Japanese CD, but unfortunately the sound quality was mediocre. The original master tapes containing the whole original recording session in very good mono sound, have now been discovered. This CD compiles every musical note recorded in 1968. The present version contains only the original music composed by Morricone, conducted perfectly by Bruno Nicolai. Morricone wrote a monothematic score including several orchestral variations of the main theme, a brilliant and very romantic motif with lounge flavor, vocalized by I Cantori Moderni di Alessandroni. Introduced first in "Titoli di Testa" and reprised with several variations throughout the score, the theme is presented in a classic-style version with harpsichord, organ and mandolin, a slow and dreamy version with the voice of Edda and also the choir I Cantori, a samba version, a beat-flavored mysterious version, another version once again with the splendid magical voice of Edda and a slower variation with the whistle of Alessandro Alessandroni. The style of Morricone thus delivers a strongly recognizable second theme, very romantic and lounge-styled, featuring a keyboard used by the author in other scores like Giu La Testa (1971). A classic-style minuet theme with the operatic vocalism of Edda enriches the score. The third theme is a brilliant orchestral samba introduced by a typewriter and developed by the whole orchestra and then reprised with the performance of the wonderful Cantori Moderni. The CD also contains three superb "shake" dance floor music themes that bring us the unforgettable Beat atmospheres of those days' discotheques.

GIOMBINI, MARCELLO L'Ossessa CD
Digitmovies release, for the first time as a complete edition on CD, Marcello Giombini's soundtrack for the horror film Enter The Devil ("L'Ossessa") (1974). Giombini (July 8, 1928 Rome-December 12, 2003 Assisi) experimented with symphonic music, electronic music and also religious music with a rock beat during his career. For cinema he wrote numerous soundtracks including the well-known ones from the Sabata trilogy of spaghetti westerns, for the cult horror film Antropophagus (1980) and the main score for the Italo-German science fiction film Mission Stardust (1967). For the present CD the mono master tapes (with the exception of two tracks in stereo) from the original recording session were used. The composer wrote an experimental electronic soundtrack with gloomy and dramatic passages as well as female voices for the satanic litanies and demonic sabbaths. The evil atmosphere is broken up by enjoyable pieces such as a samba and the recurring "Tema dell'ossessa", an extremely lyrical and sad motif. Edition of 300.

VA La Danza del Agua LP
La Danza del Agua (The Dance of Water) is an eclectic musical journey through Latin American experimentalism -- a sort of unofficial companion to the Antologia De Musica Atipica Portuguesa (Anthologies of Atypical Portuguese Music) volumes, but focusing on South American music themes instead. Originally released as two volumes (digital and cassette versions) on Papaki Records (2017, Argentina), this new concise edition presents 12 of the original 38 artists. Not to be seen as exhaustive document representing the wide styles of the even wider continent, it hopes to showcase some of its more marginal music with artists from a variety of countries such as Argentina, Mexico, Peru, Bolivia, and Venezuela. As such, this compilation shines a wider light on new and exciting sounds from the vast continent with a wide range of styles such as digital cumbias, sound experimentation, freak folk, noise, exotica, danceable beats, and much more, mixed together to give life to the continuing strange world of contemporary South American experimental music. A logical continuation of our new weird South American explorations after releasing works from Meridian Brothers, Romperayo, Chupame El Dedo, and a tape batch on Sucata sister label featuring Panchasila, Los Siquicos Litoraleños, Bardo Todol, Tomás Tello, and more. Features Tomás Tello, Wellman, Joa Joys, Horacio, Simón vs Saimon, M3Y, Manrico Montero, Gil Sanson, Pandelindio, Gustavo Obligado, Ciudad Satélite, and Jose? Soberanes.

More famous for his great film music works than for his jazz piano playing, composer, and orchestra conductor, Armando Trovajoli was in fact one of the very first musicians to carry the standard of jazz in Italy. Originally released on Italian RCA in 1959, Trovajoli Jazz Piano was his first official jazz album and today after 60 years from its release it still stands as an important proof of an early Italian approach to jazz. This is a fine session based on a perfect mixture of all-time favorite jazz standards, among them: "These Foolish Things" and "Round Midnight", and some highly sophisticated renditions of Broadway musical themes, such as "Have You Met Miss Jones?"

This band is a part of the new crops of amazing bands coming out of Mexico ready to say "fuck you, we are queer, pink and punk and not going anywhere". Frustrated with homophobic culture right now, the music is a grey goth and hardcore. Daniel's vocals (Cremalleras) are acidic screams contrasted with some killer guitar riffs that have a dirty garage sound yet keeping a strong dark cold punk feel to them. The rest of the band merges itself with Mexican po sounds from the '90s and the Madrileno wave for measure. Features a cover of La Uvi's "Ya Esta Bien".

MORE ROCKERS Dub Plate Selection Vol. 1 CD
Along with Massive Attack, nobody else than More Rockers with Smith & Mighty's Rob Smith helped define the dark creation of art -- of what came to be known as The Bristol Sound. In the late '80s, producers Rob Smith perfected the blend of rare groove, hip-hop, reggae, ganja, dread, Bacharach, bass, jungle, and drum & bass. Peter Rose, aka Peter D. the sometimes collaborator and early member of Massive Attack, hooked up with Rob Smith and they formed More Rockers. Their talent of what would become their signature blend of dub stylings with junglist tempos was amazing. It merged in the debut album Dub Plate Selection Vol. 1 in 1995 and continued this pattern with rootical jungle that could have come from some "nyabinghi" session in Kingston. That sound is simple jungle breakbeats flavored with a masterful understanding of the dub sound system roots into drum & bass. The first thing you notice is the heavy bass -- a deep round frequency that most electronic producers would die for to be able to create. It's that magical sound that feels completely natural, comforting supernaturally and powerful at the same time. It progresses into a mixed affair, blending from track to track and its quite heavily DJ-based. MCs, rappers, and female vocalists slither through for the perfect mix. Features a remix from Ronni Size & DJ Krust.

COLLETTE, NED Old Chestnut 2LP
Second edition of 500. Pressed on bottle green and blue bell color vinyl. "We were introduced to the music of Ned Collette by guitarist Julia Reidy, another Melbourne ex-pat currently based in Europe. Julia's word is good as gravy around here, so we checked out Ned's new work and were blown clean out of our socks. Old Chestnut is a haunting prog-folk song cycle for the ages. Ned's approach to voice and guitar resemble various models at various times. You'll hear smatterings of Leonard Cohen, Lou Reed, Pip Proud in lyrics and phrasing, but these are always just spices, added to the beautifully melancholic vistas Ned arrays before our ears. On the epic track, 'June,' there is a piano part by Chris Abrahams (of The Necks) so perfect in its conception it stops time. Working with longtime drum partner, Joe Talia, and a few other guests, Collette has made a goddamn whale of an album. The songs are brilliant, the arrangements have an addictively sparse genius, and the production is so full and delicate it reminds us of folks like Jim O'Rourke, Van Dyke Parks and Roger Waters. We are strangely unfamiliar with the bulk of Ned's previous recordings, but it doesn't really feel like it matters that much. With an album as strong as Old Chestnut, his history restarts here." --Byron Coley

NAS Illmatic LP
2019 repress. "In 1994, hip-hop was going through a painful growth spurt. Since N.W.A. and Ice-T's ascent in the late '80s, the rap game was no longer owned by the east coast. After the worldwide popularity of Dr. Dre's The Chronic in 1992, things were looking even worse for hip-hop's hometown. The east coast/west coast feud that would indirectly claim the lives of Biggie and Pac was still in its infancy, but New York needed a shot in the arm. And as soon as the first lines of 'N.Y. State of Mind' kick in, bolstered by perhaps DJ Premier's darkest beat of all time, the entire east coast breathed a collective sigh of relief. God's son had arrived. Backed by an absolute all-star cast of New York's top-shelf producers -- Premier, Pete Rock, Large Professor, Q-Tip, and a youngster named L.E.S. -- the album never lets up. Serious to a fault, and lyrically dense to an extent that has possibly never been matched, the 20-year old Nas stood on the shoulders of his predecessors and proudly proclaimed, 'Don't f*** with the east? we are back.' It was a dark, hard record, made for heads in New York, not teeny-boppers in Des Moines. There were no dance beats, no crossover love songs. Just boom-bap and rhymes, skills, and heart."

9T ANTIOPE & SIAVASH AMINI Harmistice LP
9T Antiope have made a name for themselves in the vibrant experimental music scene of Iran over the past years. Now based in Paris, Sara Bigdeli Shamloo and Nima Aghiani are expanding their stylistic scope and team up with long-time friend Siavash Amini for their debut release on Hallow Ground. After 2017's Tar (HG 1703CD/LP) and Foras the year after 2018 (HG 1805LP), Harmistice is Amini's third LP for the Swiss-based label and his first in collaboration with other artists. Recorded in Paris and Tehran, the four tracks are the result of "all the long hours of speaking online, being kilometers away, it is a love child of those short times we actually got to be physically in one place." Vocalist and lyricist Shamloo enters a dialogue with Aghiani and Amini's sound art, which is from restrained but interlocks voice and noise with striking subtlety. Harmistice seamlessly blends the visceral with the sublime, the abstract with the oh-too-real. From the very first second of "Blue As In Bleeding", Harmistice evokes a sense of suspended terror. Shrill frequencies and aleatoric bursts of feedback give way to a hard-hitting bass drum until Shamloo's voice arises from the chaos with an uneasy clarity. It's the perfect opening for a record that is built upon stark contrasts like this one. Amini and Aghiani bring together synthetic sounds with acoustic instruments, creating a tangible tension on which Shamloo's sometimes sensitive, sometimes emotionally detached delivery thrives. "It's all based on a dream, a nightmare about war," she says in regards to her lyrics that move between poetic abstraction and first-person prose, blurring the lines between lived experience and sinister premonition. Harmistice takes inventory after the oneiric damage has been dealt in real life. As a whole, Harmistice is thus as ambiguous as its title suggests. As an all-too-lucid dream about unspeakable things that are being lent a voice it overwhelms the senses with an unheard-of volume. Drawn from the depths of the subconscious, Harmistice may just be the most challenging album in either 9T Antiope or Amini's discography. 180 gram white vinyl.

CONSUMER ELECTRONICS Airless Space CD
Consumer Electronics return with Airless Space, a double album of all new studio recordings produced by Russell Haswell. Some wondered how the songwriting team of Philip Best and Sarah Froelich would fare after the leaving their London home to take up residency in the United States. Well, here's the answer. Recorded in San Francisco, CE deliver Airless Space, a state-of-the-union address that does for an American audience what the band's earlier Estuary English (DPROM 108LP, 2014) album did for a British audience poised upon the coming madness of Brexit. Unusually for CE, Airless Space clocks in at 60 minutes, a hexed induction for a country laboring under a presidency, that like Brexit itself, few saw coming or contemplated having to endure. Sound-wise, CE have maybe mellowed the tone a touch, allowing their electronics to stretch out and breathe, whereas the frenzied and anxious vocals of Best and Froelich remain as snatched and breathless as ever. Stunningly produced by Russell Haswell and gorgeously mastered by award-winning cutting engineer Matt Colton, Airless Space by Consumer Electronics is their most complete and rounded statement yet.

YAWNING MAN Macedonian Lines LP
LP version. Yawning Man continue to establish their exceptionally unique approach to rock music on their latest album, Macedonian Lines. This follow-up to the critically acclaimed Revolt Against Tired Noises (HPS 081CD/LP/LTD-LP, 2018) shows a further maturing of melody, dynamics, and emotion in the band's song writing. Yawning Man's roots lay at the foundation of the desert rock and stoner rock sub genres however the music the band creates is truly organic and visceral, conjuring a flowing imagery and an emotional response. On this release, the band has a darker and massively heavier sound than past recordings as most of these tracks were developed in live performance and then fully realized in the studio. Yawning Man returned to Gatos Trail Studio in the Joshua Tree Desert in California to record this album and the space and beauty of the surroundings is ever present in every track. Heavy, beautiful, and delicate. Gary Arce, Mario Lalli, and Bill Stinson continue to expand and dig deep with every track. Formed in the late 1980s, the lineup of Arce, Lalli, and Stinson rounds out their yearlong active recording and touring schedule. Arce and Lalli's background together date back to the start of Yawning Man with Stinson's background steeped in the SST Records world through performing and recording with Greg Ginn and Chuck Dukowski of Black Flag for several years. Yawning Man is acknowledged and recognized throughout the underground heavy music community as a key piece in the developments of the desert/stoner rock subgenres. While their contemporaries gravitated toward the heavy riffs of grunge, and post punk, Yawning Man leaned in another direction with their unique and organic, cinematic compositions and psychedelic improvisations, the perfect soundtrack to encompass the spacious moonscape atmosphere of the well documented "generator parties" of their area in the late 1980s.

YAWNING MAN Macedonian Lines (Color Vinyl) LP
LP version. Limited edition color vinyl. MOONDOG The Viking of Sixth Avenue 2LP
2019 repress, originally released in 2005. Tremendous gatefold presentation and one of HJR's most impressive documents to date. Poet, composer, street musician and cosmologist Moondog (Louis Thomas Hardin, 1916-1999) learned rhythm from American Indians and counterpoint from J.S. Bach. Many of his recordings feature instruments he built himself: trimba, yukh, tuji, oo. Sometimes you can hear in the background the streets of New York, where Moondog often slept. In addition, he was blind, due to an accident when he was 15. Sometime in the 1950s, fed up with being mistaken on the street for Christ (his regular busking spot was uptown on Sixth) Moondog put on a Viking costume, with spear and horned helmet; and he dressed like this until the late 1970s (by which time he was working with orchestras in Germany). Moondog's renown was extensive: Igor Stravinsky lobbied a judge on Moondog's behalf. Charlie Parker wanted to play with him, Julie Andrews DID play with him, and he was feted by the likes of Bob Dylan, Marlon Brando, and Steve Reich. Andy Warhol's mother designed one of his covers, and Weegee took photographs of him (included in the booklet). Janis Joplin covered him, Mr. Scruff owes him badly, and Antony and the Johnsons covers his songs. This is the first retrospective of Moondog's music -- 36 tracks from 1949-1995, most of them exceptionally rare, all of them miraculous.

CLAY RENDERING California Black Vows LP
California Black Vows, the new Clay Rendering full length, chronicles the group's move away from the comfort zone straight into the dark heart of the west. Since their last album, Snowthorn (HOS 433CD/LP, 2015) the band relocated from the suburbs of the Midwest to the sinister shine of Los Angeles. The cover's icicle is the last remnant of their time in familiar surroundings. More change was to follow; a duo for most of its existence, Clay Rendering's core of Mike and Tara Connelly chose to invite two allies into their closed circle: Sera Timms of Black Mare on bass and Joe Potts of Sollilja on drums. The warning bell sounded with their inclusion on Vatican Shadow's Berghain (OSTGUT 119LP, 2019) mix. A couple of EPs surfaced since the last full length, but the band has spent most of that time molding the new four-piece incarnation from the ground up and discovering the sounds and directions that new blood brings, while also acclimating to their new surreal setting. The result is a dimly-lit journey into the wild nightside, where nothing is for sure, a hypnotic trek into the center of Clay Rendering's unique brand of gloom rock commences. The album reveals itself slowly for the first minutes of "Blood Into Wine", until the refrain opens wide and dives headlong into the deep -- it's a statement of intent. From there, things rev up with uncertainty and a nervous edge. Tara takes on more vocals than previous records, haunting the nocturnal ocean with "Once In The Well," "Black Vows," and "Take Hold." Strangers come and go and dance and die in "We Wait." Questions remain unanswered in "Don't Understand You." With Dylan Neal (Thief) on production duties, Clay Rendering have delivered their fullest and most fleshed-out album to date. The immediacy of the recording gives the feel that these songs are taking shape as one hears them. Guitars melt over the keyboards and synths throughout the proceedings. The record is filled with a noir life force that transitions back and forth from desperate wails to moonlit hymns. The vocals are clearer and more direct than ever, letting one know exactly where Clay Rendering stands. The bass provides the heartbeat of the mission, the drums ensure everything lands in its place.

SEEKERSINTERNATIONAL The Guncontrolla LP
The gun tune to end all gun tune, The Guncontrolla is a righteous pacifist dub statement from the Seekersinternational posse, who go about field recording a workshop on a classic firearm disassembly and reassembly demonstration conducted by a Cold War veteran at a military surplus shop; a practice known in the community as "field-stripping". Armed with a battery-operated 1987 Tascam Porta Two 4-track recorder and a Shure SM57 cardioid microphone, the SKRS dismantle the disassembly of a Colt British Service Pistol, a Glock 34 Competition Pistol, a Kalashnikov 1967 Soviet Rifle, and a Springfield M1 Garand Rifle, in a temporal warp of dreamlike dread tension, where, crucially, not a single shot is fired. It's clear and fair to say the SKRS treat their subject carefully to avoid any sort of romanticization or fetishization of guns or violence. Instead they carefully but ruggedly use dub's transfigurative techniques to turn the workshop recording into an absorbingly abstract warning shot coaxed out of their mythical echo chamber. Drawing on ideas of metaphysics, metallurgy, and telekinetic mysticism, the results are fascinating, conjuring some imaginative intersection of a back yard GRM and the Black Ark, and characters from The Harder They Come (1972) spliced into scenes from Falling Down, fed thru psycho-delic, dematerialized concrète that intends to defuse and diffuse the curse of gun violence with the black magick of dub musick. Cut at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Edition of 500.

"On their first vinyl effort, Asid's almost monomaniacal devotion to gutting hardcore of its accretions of style and refinement and reveling in its basest instincts of power and fury is on rude display. Pounding forward with a jackhammer beat, Asid burn through tough riffs birthed choking in a dirty glut of muggy fuzz that conjures up the sickened tone of something like Disclose's Nightmare Or Reality 12". Pathetic Flesh is an intense explosion of a record, chucking up the rudimentary stomp of 'Fever', the brawny pogo of 'Bootlicker', the panic-stricken downhill rush of the title track. This record is a total hardcore statement, with stunning art from the singer Tin, whose tortured yell struggles painfully against the storm of the noise, breaking through with ugly anguish." --Joe Briggs

VA 10 Years Of Monkeytown CD
Ten years, a hundred releases, and countless outstanding tracks: Monkeytown Records is celebrating its tenth anniversary with a compilation of new and exclusive productions by the artists that shaped the label in the past and will do so in the future. These artists represent electronic music in all its shades, from more experimental to dancefloor focused approaches. Monkeytown has always tried to combine both spheres simultaneously, never neglecting fun nor freethinking. The 12 tracks from the likes of Shed, Mouse on Mars, FJAAK, Redshape, Anstam, and many more showcase and celebrate the label's continuing mission: to explore new sounds and to seek out new bangers. Monkeytown was launched in 2009 by Modeselektor. Originally conceived as a means to release music by friends and Modeselektor's own records, it soon developed into much more. The label and its offshoot 50Weapons became key players in connecting the various strains of dance and bass music, the scenes of Berlin, London, and everyone affiliated to these. This compilation unites artist that stick with the label since the very beginning, like Siriusmo or Anstam, and newer family members like Catnapp or FJAAK. Over the years, some renowned producers found their way to Monkeytown, among them Shed and Redshape. These two of course provide the techno and house part of this collection, while Gajek's kraut-influenced electroacoustic piece or Alex Banks's blissful opening ambience show that it's not necessarily all about beats. There are a lot of beats though: Dark Sky and Robot Koch like them rolling and sweetly broken, Mouse on Mars smartly frenzied, and Modeselektor themselves contribute a multidimensional track in honor of the famous Roland Space Echo, the device which lent them their name. There's also a world premiere inhouse collaboration by Otto von Schirach and Catnapp, a weirdo match made in heaven. Next to releasing great records, the best thing a record label can achieve is to have a sound of its own. Monkeytown has long become a household name for everyone who loves electronic music. Also features Radarbird and Drumno.

"Zangai" is a rolling acid paean to the atmospheric ruins of Oda Nobunaga's Azuchi Castle, while a darker mood and texture defines the satisfyingly rubbery techno weight of "Tenjin", translating as "deified spirit". Tobar expels the darkness at the center to see the light for his buoyant remix, leading to the jazzy, high-tempo electro of "Tenjou".

PAPIRO Automare LP
From the city that brought you LSD comes a new album by Marco Papiro, the Swiss-Italian musician and graphic designer who has gained some notoriety with his album covers for the likes of Panda Bear and Sun Araw. Automare is Papiro's seventh solo album, recorded on 4-track cassette, on hard-disk, in public and in private, entirely self-produced and now released on Nikolaienko's Muscut label. The five hauntingly evocative tracks offer a variety of atmospheres from surreal to arcane, from celestial to subaqueous. Synthetic sounds (some mature EMS, Moog, and Roland) are combined with other assorted instruments (organ, shehnai, electric guitar, and bass), and emulsified through various time-and-space-bending devices. There are no percussions, with one surprisingly groovy exception, in which a drum machine is being generously treated with phaser and envelope filters -- think of early Cabaret Voltaire with a North Saharan touch. Papiro's handcrafted artificial vocals are anything but human, but all the more compelling: out of the fluorescent plankton of the side-long opening track "Rhenus Rebus" rises a siren's voice, reminiscent of Alide Maria Salvetta in Battiato's "Campane", joined in a final mantra by an oboe borrowed from an inebriated Third Ear Band. Entering a chimeric karaoke bar, the title track "Automare" makes the album even more bizarre by introducing a distinctive pop feel. Back to the abstract world, the following "Polmonella" -- a live recording with additional musicians Anthony Glass (aka Antenna Tony Monorail) and Markus Stähli (of Roy & The Devil's Motorcycle) -- is a fever-y exploration of cosmic territories in the manner of Harmonia, while the alien articulation of "Incom" sounds unlike anything else ever recorded. VA Roma 2LP
"Roma is a 2018 drama film written and directed by Alfonso Cuaron, which is a semi-autobiographical take on Cuaron's upbringing in the Colonia Roma neighborhood of Mexico City. The music in the movie recreates the mood of Mexico City in the 1970s. 'It was mostly about choosing songs that were on the radio,' says music supervisor Lynn Fainchtein. She did research on the different music the Mexican radio stations were playing during the time in which the story of the movie takes place. SHINEDOE Razor EP (Incl. Roberto Remix) 12"
Shinedoe drops her second release on her own Music That Moves label. The original of "Razor" is as sharp and deadly as the title suggests -- a taut, edgy production. The dub version strips away the metallic synths and focuses in on the rhythmic interplay of drums, bass, and percussion. The remixes come courtesy of Rob Kirkaldy, aka Roberto. The first remix is a rolling, deep banger and the second remix strips away some of the additional layers, and reveals a sleek, rhythmic structure.

BIRDS OF PREY Vanishing Point LP
If emptiness is heaviness is Godliness, Birds Of Prey's third full-length LP is an immaculate conception from on high. The record luxuriates in the spaces between. What's left out says as much as what made it in. Deep, droning, and dub wise, Vanishing Point cascades in elegance. Its reference points call towards the sample manipulation of American tape music and the downward gaze of amniotic British bass music. It charts its own path nonetheless, building its own space for drifting off to. Unlike many peers operating in similar realms, Birds Of Prey are a proper band, a foursome: Grant Aaron, Clay Wilson, Eric Holmes, and Camille Altay. Each are artists in their own right with a distinct practice. In Birds Of Prey, their collaborations in studio take on a greater shape, whittled and edited into cosmic formlessness. Although borne of improvisation, you may never know that in the listening. Vanishing Point is a tight, coherent work, the sound of a cadre of talented musicians locked in flow. Rippling tones become glacial melodies. Cavernous drums emerge barely from the ether. Rhythms interlock, interpolate. Patterns repeat and dissolve whence they came. There is untold potency in simplicity, and Birds Of Prey make it known. LP comes in full color jacket; 140 gram vinyl; Includes printed sleeve and download code.

SIOUX, MARIEE Grief in Exile CD
Mariee Sioux is an artist transmitting medicinal qualities of music for the current times we are in. Her finger-picking guitar has been compared to the greats of Nick Drake and Bert Jansch and her music has also been described as hallucinatory with a trance like performance. Her first album Faces in the Rocks (2007) is considered a cult classic and garnered attention from such artists as Mazzy Star and Bonnie "Prince" Billy. Poetic mysticism and ancestral remembrance have always been deeply embedded in Mariee Sioux's music. Coming from mixed races of Polish, Hungarian, and Native American heritage she has always been fascinated by her ancestry and has recently become involved in local and national indigenous activism. Mariee was raised in the small gold mining town of Nevada City that resides on occupied Nisenan territory in Northern California. In her early years Mariee's father, a mandolin and guitar player, took the family to bluegrass and music festivals where his band often played. Music started to find a more personal place in her life when she taught herself to play guitar at 18 years old. Soon after she took her Dad's guitar on an isolating and influential trip to Argentina where she traveled alone and volunteered with indigenous Mapuche children. This was where the convergence of words, melody, and channeling began and is when Mariee wrote her first songs. During her 20s, seeking relief for from alcoholism and depression, she started to explore the worlds of plant medicine and ceremonial ways to find healing. These medicine ways were life changing and continue to be an important part of her path. There is a maturity and deepening sense of self in the nature of Mariee Sioux's recent songwriting. Her third album Grief in Exile feels like a culmination of these profound experiences and strike the listener as much more refined, less stream of consciousness and abstract. This new collection of songs shares stories of deeply intimate and relatable feelings on heartbreak, loss, indigenous prophecy, and the need to welcome grief back into our lives for the health of society."Fans of acoustic guitar-playing female singer-songwriters are so flooded with options these days that they are in the position to be pretty discriminating. Artists such as Alela Diane, Marissa Nadler, Jana Hunter, and Mariee Sioux have issued a steady stream of quality music, and have collectively set a fairly high standard for newcomers to match." --Pitchfork

COLLOCUTOR The Angry One 7"
Tamar Collocutor is back with her Collocutor ensemble for On The Corner Records' first 7". "The Angry One" is a rage, a visceral expression of what gathers within, and the counter-reaction to our times. Verve, distorted psych guitar in combat with a barrage of horns. This single is the anomaly from Collocutor's forthcoming third album. The flip sees Tamar and Magnus PI (ex-Collocutor) sparring in an in-the-moment sonic rumble in the jungle. Lunging off of T.A.O's bass line, Tamar tares hard up-river to follow the calling of ancestral drums into a cacophonous parade. Trance inducing rhythm and screams.

PARKS, TESS Blood Hot LP
2019 repress, now on white vinyl; long overdue vinyl issue of Tess Parks's 2013 Mazzy Star-esque debut, Blood Hot. A native of Toronto, Tess Parks moved to London, England at the age of seventeen where she briefly studied photography before deciding to focus on music. Tess made an impression on industry legend Alan McGee, founder of Creation Records, albeit the timing of their meeting could hardly have been less ideal; McGee was no longer involved in music and Tess was due to move back to Toronto. After moving back to her hometown in 2012, Tess formed a band on the advice of McGee and less than a year after their meeting, he returned to music with his new label, 359 Music. Tess became one of his first signings and released her debut record Blood Hot in November 2013 to excellent reviews. One reviewer described her as "Patti Smith on Quaaludes". Others have mentioned her "gauzy psychedelic sound" and "smouldering voice". Alan McGee himself said: "She's only 24 and is already an amazing songwriter... she just doesn't quite know she is yet... her most beautiful quality is her lack of ego. Tess is an amazing lady." June 2015 saw the spine-tingling collaboration between Tess Parks and Anton Newcombe (Brian Jonestown Massacre), and the resulting album I Declare Nothing was released to critical acclaim on A Recordings (AUK 120CD/LP). They toured together throughout the UK and Europe over the summer of 2015.

AGAINST ALL LOGIC 2012-2017 2LP
2019 repress. Nicolas Jaar shows he is paying attention to the masses by issuing a widely called for vinyl press of his A.A.L. (Against All Logic) album 2012-2017. Originally issued as a digital-only release back in February of 2018, it's slowly grown to become one of the most cherished releases in the entire Other People discography. Much like Kerrier District did to disco, A.A.L. (Against All Logic) borrows heavily from the samples and sounds ingrained deep within Jaar's listening habits and evidently a record collection packed to the brim with classic soul, house, and most importantly, funk hooks. Keenly twisting these sounds and filtering them through a studio set up that's leaning heavily on the beefed-up kick drums and reverb units to make a well-executed homage to these sounds, pieced together with the inherent idea of making the listener unable to resist the urge to move, be it in a bedroom, basement, or just sat in work staring at a computer screen. A.A.L. (Against All Logic) is both a well-executed homage to all of the above references, yet also just a really strong and enjoyable record from Nicolas Jaar. Its undeniable popularity digitally is sure to see the vinyl evaporate in no time at all.

SARABIA, CHELIQUE Revolucion "Electronica" en Musica Venezolana CD
Pharaway Sounds present a reissue of Chelique Sarabia's Revolucion "Electronica" en Musica Venezolana, originally released in 1971. Ultimate space-age exotica trip from Venezuela. In the early '70s, well-known composer and arranger Chelique Sarabia (who penned the famous "Ansiedad" when he was just a kid) decided to register an album of traditional and folkloric songs from Venezuela but giving them a modern touch, using especially developed equipment (M.R.A.A.), based off of the principles of the Moog. Chelique, helped by a team of gifted musicians, employed traditional instruments like the cuatro and the bandola llanera, filtered these instruments through oscillators, playing with feedback, tape delay, synthesized frequencies, echoing sounds. The result was Revolución "Electrónica" en Música Venezolana, an album with a truly exotic, psychedelic, and ahead of its time sound. Originally, the album was sponsored by the Shell Company in Venezuela, given away to customers, employees, and friends of the company as a Christmas gift in 1973. It was titled 4 Fases del Cuatro - Música Venezolana desarrollada Electrónicamente por Chelique Sarabia (4 Phases of Four - Venezuelan Music Electronically Developed by Chelique Sarabia). Once the exclusivity period with the petrol company was over, Chelique did a commercial release, this time under the name of Revolución "Electrónica" en Música Venezolana (Electronic Revolution in Venezuelan Music). Thanks to this, Chelique and his team were considered electronic music pioneers in Latin America. Master tape sound. Includes insert with liner notes by Chelique Sarabia."In the past five decades, there have been many attempts at modernizing the vast folkloric tradition of Venezuela, but nobody has reached the level of depth that Chelique Sarabia did when he put his impeccable reputation as a composer and arranger at risk with this out-of-the-blue revolutionary musical manifesto in 1971. 47 years later, an album that remains ahead of its time." --Alex Figueira (Fumaça Preta)

TARDOS, ANNE Gatherings CD
"Anne Tardos is an American poet, visual and vocal artist; she has developed a unique performance style that allows her to move fluidly within -- and between -- media. This is evident in Gatherings, which was originally published on cassette by New Wilderness Audiographics, and holds recordings from 1974-1981. It stands as one of Tardos's seminal audio documents; two forms of sound are examined here; the first is observational and static recordings of the artist's loft: percussive sounds from heat pipes expanding and contracting and the irregular pulse of her refrigerator defrosting. The reflection of chaos found in nature is encapsulated and tagged here in its simplest form. Tardos rolled those moments of found sounds onto tape, reexamining the meaning (and the ultimate absence) of stillness. The other form of this album is multichannel solo voice works; they are intimate, close-miked, and playful, morphing from harmonic swirls to whisperings. They capture a dynamic exploration of her extended vocal range -- the contrast between pieces is dramatic. The final piece, "Real Sleeper, Real Dreamer," integrates both forms. It is a self-portrait of the artist sleeping, bending inside breath and air, a study of the physical surface above dreams, the durational search within the expanse of the self, and the phenomenal depth of the shallows is splashed in our ears" --Sean McCann, April 2019. Edition of 200, includes eight-page booklet with notes by Tardos and Charlie Morrow.

"Nazz's second album was to be a double album (as per Todd's wishes), called Fungo Bat. Recording began in Nov 1968 and completed in Spring (March) 1969. Due to band members indifference and management decisions, it was never released as such and Todd left the band to pursue a solo career. Todd's personal copies of the Fungo Bat acetates were among the possessions lost in a fire at his home. The source of the recordings is from an individual in Austin, Texas, who once owned one of the only known copies of the acetates for Fungo Bat. It was three 12" acetates, with typed labels. The track listing on the acetates are just in order, 24 tracks -- if this was indeed the album order, what is listed above is the logical place for album side breaks With Todd Rundgren - guitar; Robert 'Stewkey' Antoni - vocals, keyboards; Carson Van Osten - bass; Thom Mooney - drums. MARTIN, KEVIN RICHARD Sirens LP
Room40 presents Kevin Richard Martin (The Bug)'s Sirens, his solo debut. "When I was 22 I managed to acquire Techno Animal's Demonoid 12"; I can still recall the intensities of sound that marked the first moments of listening to it. The sense of bass as a tactile surface, that rolling groove and the howling sine waves and dub sirens that scorched with a type of sonic burning sensation that to this day makes my hairs stand on end. A year later I heard Ice's Bad Blood, from there I discovered The Bug, a band called God, a sound movement called isolationism and much more; all of these projects had one nexus point. In 2015, Kevin and I book-ended a series of concerts at Berghain for CTM festival. For his performance, Kevin debuted a new work I'd heard very little about called Sirens. I remember two things distinctly about the performance. The first: he opened the set with a blazing passage of bass and dub sirens that transported me back to those initial moments of encountering his work. The second was the feeling of absolute, crushing bass. Not before, or since, have I felt a sense of sound pressure like this. Unlike his other work with The Bug, the consistent bass carrying in the space was literally breathtaking and there were moments when it seemed difficult to see clearly as my eye sockets were vibrating in a way I'd never experienced. Sirens, which documents the intensities surrounding the delivery and early days of his first child, carries in it a sense of deep affect. The album, unlike the live work, traces out a dynamic sound world that is both tender and caustic. Within each piece, microcosms of sensation unfold, Kevin deftly maneuvers us through the tumultuous journey. Sirens somehow creates a sense of time that is without anchor and foggy in a way that is profoundly unique. Martin has remained a point of constant inspiration for me over several decades now; to have the opportunity to share his first ever solo recording brings me the utmost pride. His new work Sirens is a life journey transposed into sound that is truly personal, but effortlessly universal. It is the start of a new chapter, one that I know will only strengthen his place as one of the critical voices in contemporary electronic music." --Lawrence English, March 2019 Mastered by Stefan Betke at Scape Mastering.

IRISARRI, RAFAEL ANTON Solastalgia LP
"We find ourselves increasingly in a swell of solastalgia, which is not a new phenomenon; it has haunted us over the centuries. Change has never been humanity's strong suit, but it has been our shadow; it's here, at this fractious nexus of unpredictability that Rafael Anton Irisarri has created his latest work, Solastalgia. Building on the echoes of landscape that guided his previous Room40 editions, Solastalgia imagines that which is not yet known. Utilizing a range of unexpected variables, automations and uncontrolled systems in the creation of the recordings, Irisarri has developed a new approach to his work, seamlessly weaving together intense layers of texture and saturated harmony. Within these works, distant melodies emerge and in their wake the listeners' focus shifts again and again. A never-ending loop of the unconscious feeding into the conscious is formed. Whilst the skeletal form of pieces such as "Coastal Trapped Disturbance" might remain, the organic matter that is the body of the music is in a process of persistent transformation. These subconscious variations morph the pieces from within. This is a record of sublimation, and dwells in states of transition and becoming. Recorded in two suites, each section is a distorted mirror reflection of the other. Solastalgia stands as a landmark undertaking for Irisarri, it encourages us to remain unsettled and attentive in the moment, and prompts us to listen deeper and imagine what lies beyond or in excess of our expectations." Written and produced by Rafael Anton Irisarri in New York, USA during Autumn 2018.Rafael Anton Irisarri is an American composer, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer living in New York. Described as one of contemporary ambient music's most celebrated practitioners, Irisarri's music often has a mournful, elegiac quality where ostinato phrases tap into minimalist ideals while atmospheric layers of effects suggest a more cinematic approach. In all, his compositions are deeply emotive and epic, like a symphony recording that's been rescued from attic entombment after half a century. Irisarri concerts at museums, churches, synagogues, and other non-traditional performance spaces explore the physicality of sound. Combining an array of heavy metal bass amplifiers, multiple loudspeaker configurations, synthesizers, bowed guitars, notebook computers, video images, and lighting, Irisarri decontextualizes the audience's relationship to the venue, creating an immersive, otherworldly environment. Irisarri's recorded works are widely published internationally.

Indeed, the very limited, vinyl-only Live at the BBC album was released in 2011 (RLP 2118LP), but this time the band booked a four-day residency at the intimate Kampen Bistro in Oslo and invited old friend Reine Fiske -- a vital presence on previous albums Atlantis (RCD 2134CD/RLP 3134LP, 2012) and Silver Mountain (RCD 2174CD/RLP 3174LP, 2016) -- along for two of the evenings. Everything was recorded in front of enthusiastic crowds and later mixed by Christian Engfelt, another trusted collaborator. It's a rough warts-and-all mix, with no overdubs, repairs or edits. Tracks are picked from all their albums, often given lengthy workouts with room for improvisation. The trio is extremely tight and telepathic, with Ståle as the obvious soloist, but it's worth to mention the drummer for a change, Torstein being a powerhouse that truly shines on these recordings.

ELEPHANT9 WITH REINE FISKE Psychedelic Backfire II 2LP
Double LP version. Reine Fiske has on several occasions proved a perfect guest for the Elephant9 trio, both on record and on stage. Never one to fight for attention, with Elephant9 he's a true equal given the opportunity to express himself both as a soloist as well as a rhythm guitarist, his interaction with Ståle Storløkken's keyboards creating some magic sequences. Ståle is a founder member of Supersilent since 1997, and has for many years been Terje Rypdal's trusted right hand. Nikolai Hængsle is most known from Bigband and Band of Gold. Torstein Lofthus was a member of Shining for several years and has played with a large number of jazz, pop, and rock artists. Reine Fiske is a founder member of Dungen and Träden, the continuation of the legendary Swedish group Träd, Gräs Och Stenar.

Welcome to the deeper end of the Hugh Mane spectrum. Mane's third outing on Running Back captures his love for the spirit of early Detroit techno, IDM's ambient aspects, the philosophy of the acid house experience, and a natural production flow. HIFIKLUB & MIKE COOPER Aran Stories CD
British guitarist Mike Cooper collaborates with Hifiklub, a French instrumental ensemble from Toulon, for an impressive musical reading of Robert J. Flaherty's 1934 silent film Man of Aran. Since 2007, French quartet Hifiklub has been building a protean work that evolves through an impressive series of collaborations. The band's catalog is wide and far-reaching, and includes more than 130 collaborations with such renowned musicians as Lee Ranaldo, Alain Johannes, Jad Fair, Fatso Jetson, R. Stevie Moore, amongst others. For the past 50 years Mike Cooper has been an international musical explorer, performing and recording, solo and in a number of inspired groupings and a variety of genres. Initially a folk-blues guitarist and singer songwriter, his work has diversified to include improvised and electronic music, live music for silent films, radio art and sound installations. In 2017, Hifiklub got in touch with Mike Cooper to record (and eventually perform) a live soundtrack to controversial filmmaker Robert J. Flaherty's silent movie Man of Aran. Flaherty was an American filmmaker who directed and produced the first commercially successful feature-length documentary film, Nanook of the North, in 1922. Following the success of this film, he continued the development of this new genre of narrative documentary with Moana (1926), set in the South Seas, and Man of Aran (1934), filmed in Ireland's Aran Islands. When devising the lyrics for his performance, Cooper dug into Irish writer John Millington Synge's book The Aran Islands, published in 1907. This book provided the initial inspiration for Flaherty's film. Cooper cut up texts from the book and sang them for the record, while relying on a different set of texts from the same source, for the live performance. It was Cooper who contacted Lebanese indie label Ruptured for the release of the album; no stranger to the Lebanese experimental scene and its various key players, Cooper has already recorded two albums in Beirut. Edition of 400.

From the Middle Eastern sounds and devilish rhythms of "Dolmus", a magnetic, free-jazz re-working of the Mulatu Astatke composition "Emnete", to the energetic and spellbinding flood of roaring saxes on "Mammouth", Azmari draw on influences including Herbie Hancock, Cymande, The Heliocentrics, Fela Kuti, and much more. Kutiman presents the singular new collaboration with Turkish chanteuse Melike ?ahin. The single "Sakla Beni" (Hide Me), is a true cultural fusion in both sound and complexion. It is a haunting and emotional piece that unfolds; it's so mature and cohesive that it sounds like the fruit of a long, joint musical journey. While the sound is unmistakably Kutiman's and immediately evokes the dense, psychedelic groove laden vibe of his 2016 epic album 6AM (SYL 002CD/LP, 2016), the melodic and production approach radiates the afterglow of the Anatolian rock scene of the '60s and '70s.

BERTOIA, HARRY Experimental I/Mechanical I CD
When Harry Bertoia's Sonambient label was resurrected, Important Records' intention was to tell the story of Bertoia's groundbreaking Sonambient work as revealed through his extensive collection of notes and recordings. When the first new LP was released in 2016, Important were only in possession of 1/20th of the archive. Now, in 2019, the label is excited to release the first LP of new material from the full archive and they present it to increase understanding of what Bertoia was doing in his sound-barn deep in the Pennsylvania woods. The recordings contained on this LP were selected because of their relationship to Bertoia's body of recorded work. The titles are from Bertoia's notes which Bertoia placed in each tape box, indicating date and describing briefly. Like his sculptures, Bertoia never titled his recordings but frequently referred to specific concepts he was pursuing. These are among the earliest known examples of Bertoia using terms which would become more common in the years to come: "experimental", "mechanical", and "long sounds". Cut from the original master tapes maintaining a straight analog signal path. CD version includes bonus track "Long Sounds"."Experimental I": Very few of Bertoia's early experimental sessions survive on tape: he did not record many and often erased those he taped. Most were not recorded and those that were recorded, were often erased. Those that remain, however, offer fascinating insights into how Bertoia likely worked in the barn when the tape machine wasn't running. Although he left behind hundreds of tapes, one can only begin to imagine the amount of unrecorded sessions that took place in Bertoia's barn. "Experimental I" shows the artist stretching out, in no hurry and avoiding any bombastic explosiveness. You can imagine Bertoia looking around the barn much as he is seen on this album's cover; searching for the next sound in his forest of metal wires. Unheard combinations of sculptures, percussion and long strummed sections make this recording unique. This piece has an effortless, natural flow."Mechanical I": There appear to be at least ten tapes from 1969-1975 that Bertoia noted were "Mechanical". Bertoia thought of his sculpture as a collaboration with industry since the diameters of his rods were, ultimately, determined by what was available from the factory that manufactured them. In that sense, Bertoia's music could, quite literally, be considered industrial and this piece has the metallic rhythms of a factory pulsing through it.

THOLLOT, JACQUES Quand Le Son Devient Aigu, Jeter La Girafe A La Mer LP
Souffle Continu Records present the first ever vinyl reissue of Jacques Thollot's Quand Le Son Devient Aigu, Jeter La Girafe À La Mer, originally released in 1971. While he was still just a young adolescent who had perfected his drum technique under the benevolent wing of Kenny Clarke, the Club Saint-Germain liked to present Jacques Thollot as a prodigy capable of holding his own with the famous jazz musicians who came through Paris. It was there that Eric Dolphy immediately noticed him, and from René Thomas to Walt Dickerson, everyone wanted to work with him. However, it was during the 1960s, first with Jef Gilson then François Tusques, Barney Wilen, Joachim Kühn, and Steve Lacy, that the decisive encounters occurred. Without forgetting that he joined, in 1968, one of Don Cherry's groups, went on tour with them and came back transformed. That being said, to present Jacques Thollot as an in-demand virtuoso who could adapt to any circumstances would be to ignore both his demanding compositions and his complete freedom from stylistic boundaries. Although he had already featured on some cult albums -- Our Meanings And Our Feelings by Michel Portal (1969), Monkey-Pockie-Boo by Sonny Sharrock (1970) -- the first album under his own name, recorded in 1971 for producer Gérard Terronès, who gave him free rein, would turn out to be an unexpected, unclassifiable and astounding work. Entitled Quand Le Son Devient Aigu, Jeter La Girafe À La Mer, ("when the sound gets high-pitched, throw the giraffe into the sea") it is an extraordinary sonic collage, created from discrete re-recordings and using just a handful of instruments including drums and piano. The result is a miracle, though the economy of means the production technique succeeds in putting the spotlight on the oddly elaborate compositions under an enigmatic but well-chosen title, borrowed from poet Henri Michaux. It puts into words the mysteries of a fragile melancholic universe which can be compared to another album by an iconoclastic drummer: The End Of An Ear by Robert Wyatt (1970). The difference being the highly personal elements which shine through the French musician's album, clearly drawn from listening intently to classics from Debussy, Ravel, and Barraqué (whom he knew), a seam which he would continue to mine on his equally excellent following albums Watch Devil Go (1975) and Cinq Hops (1978). Thollot recorded five albums under his own name during his lifetime, but those albums are marvelous. Licensed from Futura/Marge. 16-page booklet with unpublished photos an essay by Jean Rochard.

PANOU & THE ART ENSEMBLE OF CHICAGO, ALFRED Je Suis Un Sauvage/Le Moral Necessaire 7"
Repressed; originally released for RSD 2019. A single produced by the highly-revered Saravah label at the time, featuring the Art Ensemble of Chicago backing the poetry of the little-remembered Alfred Panou, is not as well-known as the label's other releases. Seen in the 1967 film Weekend by Jean-Luc Godard, Alfred Panou who is of mixed Benin-Togolese origin, already had a career as an actor in political theater when, pushed by producer Pierre Barouh, he recorded two of his texts concerning Black Power. Panou's prose is one of the first, in its own way, to question the notion of black identity. The rowdy poly-instrumental jungle fantasy of the Art Ensemble of Chicago creates a musical counterpoint. DOUBLING RIDERS, THE The World Of The Doubling Riders 6CD BOX
Spittle Records in co-operation with Officine Fonografiche Italiane present The World Of The Doubling Riders, The Doubling Riders' complete works. The Doubling Riders were born in the middle of the '80s from the ashes of A.T.R.O.X. and around the trio of Francesco Paladino, Pier Luigi Andreoni, and Riccardo Sinigaglia. Especially thanks to their collaboration with international artists such as Pascal Comelade, Ira Stein, and Vox Populi, The Doubling Riders stand out from the rest of other Italian bands of the time. Starting from an electronic music approach and working freely with ethno, folk and wave elements, the sound of the Doubling Riders was extremely original and quite hard to classify. Even if often compared to some of the more intellectual new wave bands like Tuxedomoon, Doubling Riders can be easily considered a unique project within the Italian new music scene. This six-CD box contains the whole of their four albums produced between 1985 and 1991: Doublings & Silences Volume I (1985), Doublings & Silences Volume II (1988), World! (1989), and Garama (1991). All properly remastered, including the first two available on CD for the first time, plus a bonus CD containing a selection of previously unpublished material and rare tracks from the same period. VA Spectra Ex Machina: A Sound Anthology of Occult Phenomena, 1920-2017 Vol. 1 LP
"Have a gramophone in every grave..." --James Joyce, Ulysses (1922)The anthology Spectra Ex Machina brings together rare documents pertaining to so-called occult phenomena, most of them taken from little-known archives. In the course of three volumes, this series traces an audio history of parapsychology through the exploration of spiritualism and haunted houses (Vol. 1); musician mediums (vol. 2); experiences of extrasensory perceptions (clairvoyance, psychokinesis, etc.) and electronic voice phenomena (vol. 3). The documents gathered here are, by their extravagance and far-fetched aspects, more than the mere objects of belief one would be tempted to reduce them to. They are vestiges of aberrant phenomena, fossils of an unknown civilization buried in the depths of the unconscious that are revived, in a way, when we listen to them. They can be understood as "works", in the full artistic sense of the word, and constitute a kind of "cabinet of sound curiosities" that is worthy of aesthetic interest. Sometimes imbued with a disconcerting dramatic intensity, these documents bear the features of an authentic time machine, placing the listener in the position of a witness of the time immersed in the dim darkness of the experimental hall. And it is at that precise moment that the aesthetic power of these archives takes precedence over their probative value. Their somewhat old-fashioned charm, maintained by the surface noise of magnetic tapes and old wax disks, gets stronger with each listen. Contains a 20-page large booklet, 30x30 cm.

Close friend of John Cage and Nam June Paik, he was also the first husband of Yoko Ono -- Fluxus period. His Cloud Atlas is a collection of ten short pieces composed between 1985 to 1999. From exclusives notes from the booklet: "Music has been defined as temporal art, however the temporal elements of music have been gradually decreased and lacking since the late 19th century. I feel that we need to compensate for the lack of those elements and introduce new elements, which can be alternative to them, in my case, it is substantial space, in order to restore the spiritual richness that music provides." Currently, he serves as Artistic Director of TIME; Artistic Director of Ensemble Origin_A Millennium of Resonance; Adviser of the Japan Music Competition; Board Member of Saison Foundation; Councilor of Suntory Foundation for Arts and General Artistic Director of the Kanagawa Arts Foudation.Claude Ledoux was a pupil of Henri Pousseur. WOLFF, CHRISTIAN Preludes, Variations, Studies and Incidental Music 2CD
These two discs reveal Christian Wolff as a composer fully exploring, in different ways, the continuum between music which is highly fragmented, embracing extended silences (composed or indeterminate), to that which is more progressive and seemingly driven, albeit taking in disarming and unconventional routes. As a body of repertoire, these works are remarkable for their freshness of musical thought and energy (John Cage considered Wolff to be the most "musical" of the experimental composers). Performer Philip Thomas (b.1972, North Devon) specializes in performing experimental notated and improvised music as a soloist and with leading experimental music group Apartment House. He is currently Professor of performance at the University of Huddersfield, co-director of Cerenem, and co-editor of Changing the System: the music of Christian Wolff (2010). ARKBRO, ELLEN Chords CD
With Chords, the Stockholm-based musician and composer Ellen Arkbro returns to Subtext, following her acclaimed debut album For Organ And Brass (SUB 011CD/021LP, 2017). This new long-player sees Arkbro adopt a more minimalist approach, focusing on the immediate qualities of sound and elegantly expanding the tonal capacities of acoustic instruments using precise, subtle synthesis. Composed of a carefully selected combination of tones, Chords stretches, extends and obscures the timbral character of the instruments it is performed on. Across both tracks, Arkbro examines the sonic materiality and harmonic quality of chords. She considers how the compositions occupy space rather than time -- transposing theoretical possibilities into the phenomenal realm. As a part of Arkbro's systematic investigation of harmonic sound, Chords proffers a divergence from conventional ways of listening. "Chords For Organ" was first envisaged in Stockholm's brutalist Västerort Church. With an interest in tuned intervals and chords, Arkbro sought out particular harmonicities before synthetically supplying additional harmonic content and texture. To pure fifths and octaves, she adds synthesized natural sevenths and thirds, creating a heightened sense of harmonic stability. While this incarnation of "Chords For Organ" was recorded in Malmö's St. John's Church, this work is site-specific, requiring Arkbro to seek out appropriate chordal orchestrations in registers and tunings on each respective instrument, when performing live. "Chords For Organ" has been adapted and performed in Martin Luther Kirche in Dresden, Civico Tempio Di San Sebastiano in Milan, First Unitarian Church in Brooklyn, Lutherse Kerk in Den Haag and Sint-Jan de Doperkerk in Leuven. In the corresponding "Chords For Guitar" Arkbro applies her process to a more widely accessible instrument. Employing a fine-tuned Karplus-Strong synthesis, she supplements additional tones to create a harmonically controlled blend of the acoustic and the synthetic. "Chords For Guitar" places the listener at the center of a cyclically repeating complex of harmonic strings in wave-like motion. Attention is synchronously fixed with the sound as this chordal harmony rises, vibrates, and purrs away, before rising again. As she transposes these ideas across organ and guitar, Arkbro teases out their affinities and dissimilarities, and, in doing so, effectively highlights the harmonic character of the work as a whole.

SCHNITT Synchropath LP
Schnitt develops in Synchropath a method of composing based on the synchronism of video and audio files. The generated files come from several different sound and video sources. Schnitt selects 42 audio sources and 28 video sources from which they extract 678 audio files and 234 video files. The single files will be processed, assembled, and synchronized between themselves and build up the basic structure of this work. The initial inspiration for the realization of the project Synchropath can be found in the impact of the disorder and chaos generated by the invasive and oppressive presence of sound and visual sources which surround our everyday lives. Schnitt questions the status of the image, an exploration between communication systems post -- television, public screens, websites, home movies, surveillance cameras, service monitors, etc. In the audio/video performance Synchropath, Schnitt activates a process of addition/subtraction which is taking position beyond from the image itself. During the interaction between sound and light the captured images reveal only in some parts their own figurative origin, the eight tracks continue along between balance and abstraction, harmony and obsession. Each part refers to a certain type of synchronization using its single basic color for the chromatic development of the video part. The audio part is composed simultaneously to the visual part and is developed by a selection of more than 600 sound fragments which have been extracted especially for this project from the examined 42 sound sources. The sound of Synchropath is the result of assembling and overlapping sound work, a sort of utopian harmonic organization between communication systems. The sound of electronic origin builds up on rhythmic structures which Schnitt defines in accordance with the external inputs. Synchropath is produced and released by Sync. Edition of 300.

SCHNITT Memory Code LP
Memory Code is a project with the central focus on the human memory. Originally developed as an audio/video live performance the duo Schnitt based their research for this work on the decoding of their personal memory. During the composition of the album, Schnitt undergoes an inspection and analysis of their own conserved information, automatisms, and intense emotional states connecting them with their current state of mind. The album Memory Code is developed in nine tracks, each one dedicated to a certain type of memory in which successions of layers gradually become visible and emerge in the sound structure generating a balance between subtle personal sensations and vibrations. For the realization of the album Memory Code, Schnitt extends their work inviting several international artists to participate with their personal sound memory to the project, asking them to send one or more "memory sound files" in order to integrate and open the project to other artistic influences, different cultural backgrounds, national origins and generations. The "memory file" contributions received by the eleven guest artists are integrated as a micro ignition of memory into the sound structures previously developed by Schnitt, as well as being an initial input for new compositions in behalf of the Memory Code album. Features: Caterina Barbieri, I.A. Bericochea, Tilman Ehrhorn, Anders Ilar, Incite/, Vitor Joaquim, Ran Slavin, Tacit Group, Frans De Waard, Pavel Zhagun, and Herman Kolgen.

JIHA, PARK Philos CD
Park Jiha's debut album Communion (GB 057CD/LP) -- released internationally by tak:til in 2018 -- drew well deserved attention to the young Korean instrumentalist/composer's vivid sound world. The widely acclaimed album graced 2018 critics lists at The Wire, Pop Matters, and the Guardian. Her new album Philos -- which she calls an evocation of her "love for time, space and sound" -- is every bit as inventive, elegant, and transcendent as her debut. While Park Jiha's music is often contextualized by its kinship with minimalism, ambient, and chamber jazz, her creative backbone is Korean traditional music. Jiha formally studied both its theory and practice and has mastered three of its most emblematic instruments: Piri (double reed bamboo flute), saenghwang (mouth organ), and yanggeum (hammered dulcimer). On Communion, Park Jiha wove these ancient instruments into an ensemble sound that included other musicians contributing on vibraphone, saxophone, bass clarinet, and percussion. The effect felt revelatory; it seemed to naturally evoke Jon Hassell's "Fourth World" ethos, morphing across time and tradition. Philos is both an extension of, and a swerve away from, her previous record. It shares its predecessor's patience and deeply resonant hypnotic effects. It similarly looks to the future, while continuing to converse with a rich instrumental language from the past. But the overall tone and intent feels much more interior and personal -- more rarefied. Whereas Communion featured the classic sound field of a group of musicians playing in a room, Philos trades that for more density and concentration. Each sound has been given the artist's full attention. In Greek, "Philos" is the plural for "philo" which can mean "love" or "the liking of a specified thing." The album's compositions include "Arrival", which slowly introduces every sound featured on the record. The gift of unexpected rain in the heat of midsummer is heard on "Thunder Shower". "Easy" is a poem written and recited by the Lebanese artist Dima El Sayed who visited Korea to participate in the Hwaeom Spiritual Music Ritual and was inspired by Park Jiha's work. The title track "Philos" was created by overlapping sounds and stretching time. "Walker: In Seoul" evokes the vivid soundscape of the city in which Jiha lives. "When I Think If Her" features the ghostly melodies of the yanggeum and saenghwang. Park Jiha reaches for a sturdy simplicity. A borderless connection between her life and her accomplished musical art.

LEVIN GOES LIGHTLY Nackt CD
"... Everything could have stayed the same, but you can rely on Levin Stadler to break with the norm. His Levin Goes Lightly project has earned a plethora of plaudits in recent times -- a cover of Iggy Pop's 'Nightclubbing' made it all the way to the master's headphones and straight onto the aforementioned's BBC radio show. Latterly, Trentemøller was curating a compilation (HFN 085CD/LP, 2018) and put in a request to include Levin's song '1989'. Levin Goes Lightly has thus transcended the barriers which usually stand between German pop music and a wider audience. Under normal circumstances, Nackt, the fourth album, might have been expected to continue along the same stylistic path, had Levin not felt the irresistible urge to step outside his comfort zone. In a live context, he has always worked with different musicians, Max Rieger (Die Nerven) among them. Since the last album GA PS, Levin Goes Lightly has developed from a solo project into a collaborative one. The songs on Nackt were crafted with the support of Thomas Zehnle (Wolf Mountains) and Paul Schwarz (Human Abfall). Shortly after the release of GA PS in 2017, this trio began taking regular trips to France, lodging in a remote country house to work on new ideas. Inspired by the strange rural setting, their songwriting sensibilities ventured into the unknown. The most obvious change saw Levin switch to exclusively German lyrics. He did not, however, follow their innate linguistic rhythm, instead choosing to play with ambiguities and irritations. In some places, the lyrics on Nackt echo flowery American metaphor, in others they lurch into the untempered brutality of early NDW (German New Wave) bands. On 'Stroboskop', Levin ultimately expresses his desire in a deep timbre reminiscent of Gabi Delgado (D.A.F.). Heavy vocals weigh down on a weirdly dreamy pop beat with subtle, deep bass. The music on Nackt still ploughs the melodious, psychedelic furrows of beautiful pop we have come to associate with Levin Goes Lightly. But urgent dissonances break through to the surface, engendered perhaps by the morbid depths of the crucible that is Stuttgart. Take the guitar sounds winding around 'Rote Lippen', reverberating with My Bloody Valentine-esque density. Or the hypnotic synthesizer on the title track, recalling Violator period Depeche Mode . . . Tangibility, concreteness slip through our grasp nevertheless: Levin Goes Lightly remains androgynous, a fascinating phenomenon betwixt the icy coolness of a Ziggy Stardust and the comforting intimacy of a time-honored crooner." --David Hutzel

CATENARY WIRES, THE Til The Morning CD
The Catenary Wires are Rob Pursey and Amelia Fletcher. They specialize in emotive indie duets, capturing the spirits of Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood, Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot, and releasing them into modern Britain. The resulting songs will appeal to fans of Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile or Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan. On Til The Morning, they are joined by Andy Lewis (Paul Weller Group, Spearmint) on cello, mellotron, and percussion and Fay Hallam (Makin' Time, Prime Movers) on Hammond organ and backing vocals. Matthew King (a classical composer) plays piano. Nick and Claire Sermon play brass. The local Kentish countryside provides ambient noise. The album was recorded during 2018 at the Sunday School, in the middle of nowhere in Kent. It is a big step forward from their first album, Red Red Skies (2015): more complex and more beguiling, with a multi-layered sound that reflects a range of additional instruments, including harmonium, bells and an old trailer. It was produced by Andy Lewis, who has recently produced albums for Judy Dyble and French Boutik.Matt Haynes, ex-head of Sarah Records, writes: "When a wire is hung from two fixed points, the shape it makes is a catenary. Its beauty lies in its simplicity -- so natural, so effortless. And when two people who, after starring in a quartet of legendary pop bands, have themselves become pop legends, decide to leave London's indie scene to those with fewer candles on their cakes and set up home in a distant green corner of Kent . . . The sound they make is The Catenary Wires, aka Amelia Fletcher and Rob Pursey, formerly of Tender Trap, Marine Research, Heavenly, and proto-riot-grrrl machismo-mocking punk-pop explosion Talulah Gosh . . . Til The Morning isn't folk music, though, fetishizing the rustic and the past with straw-headed notions of authenticity. The recordings might be home-made in an un-soundproofed room, with each sigh as clear as breath on an icy morning, and the snare an old metal trailer hit with a stick, but they're computer literate and polished to a warm sheen. And when birdsong fills the gaps, it comes with reverb. It isn't lo-fi, either, unfocussed and meandering -- why would two people who've spent their lives crafting three-minute pop gems suddenly do that? The songs are uncluttered because all that's there is what needs to be there..."

DREI FARBEN HOUSE Supreme Beats Series LP
Six songs, one sound signature, one vision. Supreme Beats Series by Drei Farben House is an album that firmly stands in the tradition of the big records of the disco era: a vinyl disc full of kicks and licks, just as much as two sides in amazing sound quality can hold. The album is the latest work of Michael Siegle, the Berlin-based producer and owner of Tenderpark Records. 13 years after Drei Farben House's first full-length on the acclaimed Force Tracks label (2006), it features contributions by singer and songwriter Mavin and none other than Robert Owens, who's voice shaped house music forever. The trademark sonic elegance of Drei Farben House blends perfectly with the timbre of the man behind Fingers Inc.'s "Mysteries Of Love". Siegle's work as a producer is not so much about turning this rich heritage upside down, but about refining it and creating a space within that realm that's very much his own. The title of the opening song with Owens states it: "I'm Remaining Here". And Supreme Beats Series invites you to come over and stay there, too, in a refuge of class and funkiness. The record offers dense layers of rhythm, vintage keyboard sounds, chucking guitar, and vocal samples that indulge in a many-voiced conversation. Not to forget the prominent, singing rather than walking bass lines performed by the hands of Michael Siegle himself with his bass guitar. You could think of Supreme Beats Series as a cross-section in time and space. It allows you to take a closer look at the here and now of a much bigger picture, both aesthetically and socially. Siegle uses the vocabulary of house music in a way that transcends its conception as merely a genre and speaks of the historic evolution and the profound roots of this music as a movement. His record takes inspiration from '60s Motown hits as well as the blue-eyed soul of the '80s, you can discover influences ranging from Philly's pre-disco craze to new jack swing and on to the heyday when house-pop divas stormed the charts. By drawing these lines, Siegle deliberately opens up the space of a visionary soul pop continuum.

VINCE, BEN Don't Give Your Life 2LP
Following on from 2018's rapturously received Assimilation, London-based saxophonist, improviser and producer Ben Vince returns with Don't Give Your Life. Over the last few years, Vince's solo saxophone and electronics performances, along with his work in the clattering post-punk troupe, Housewives, have helped him quickly establish a considerable reputation among those in the know. Where his first releases under his name honed in on his meditatively layered and looped saxophone lines -- placing him in a lineage beginning with the Time Lag Accumulator works of Terry Riley and stretching into the icy expanses of John Surman's 1980s recordings and the hypnotic riffing of Gilbert Artman's Urban Sax (1977) -- Assimilation saw Vince branching out to work with high-profile collaborators such as Micachu and demonstrating his deep love of the outer reaches of club music (also evident on last year's collaborative 12" with UK bass music bigwig Joy Orbison). Don't Give Your Life is the strongest work yet from an artist whose work demonstrates a risk-taking, omnivorous appetite for the new while also digging deeper and deeper into a unique sonic sensibility. Features Bianca Scout, Kenta Sekine, Tom Glencross, Jacob Samuel, Alpha Maid, Rupert Clervaux, and Raven Bush.

MAESTRO Maestro In The Chamber LP
Tigersushi presents Maestro's Maestro In The Chamber. Label head Joakim on the release: "Last summer, Maestro were invited to the Chateau du Fëy in French Burgundy to perform live. Instead of going for their usual power trio formula, they dropped almost all their instruments arsenal, kept one synth, a minimal drum kit and invited a string quartet to create stripped down chamber orchestra versions of their songs. The result was beyond everyone's expectations. And luckily it was recorded. I always love hearing great bands demos and alternate takes (like The Beatles, Bowie...), when the things are still rough, stripped down. Then you can really hear the essence of a song. That's what's so beautiful with this record, Fred's intricate string arrangements cast a new light on Maestro's sophisticated compositions, Mark's lyrics and voice take you far away, their music shines like never before. One last thing, if they ever play in your town, do yourself a favor and go see them live."

BAND OF HOLY JOY Neon Primitives LP
LP version. Band Of Holy Joy have gone through many incarnations of musical imagination, inspiration, and output, without straying from their roots in poetic expressions of social observation and critique -- and good tunes! As are their diverse spiritual brethren -- The Mekons, Nightingales, The Pop Group -- Johny Brown and compatriots are best in periods of social upheaval and rule by opportunistic, insipid demagogues, which is why Band Of Holy Joy, like the aforementioned bands, are in the midst of a powerful renaissance. Rarely had an album title inadvertently captured the zeitgeist in as perfectly absurd a manner as the last full-length, Funambulist We Love You (PICI 011CD/LP, 2017), and its "hit" (if you will) was the metaphorical "To Leave Or Remain", which caught the shock of the Brexit vote results. What only two years ago was vaguely plaintive consideration in the face of a coming storm has now cemented into rage. In real terms, Neon Primitives' stand-out track, "The Devil Has A Hold On The Land", names the very forces of evil which have led to the ills of 2019. Not to diminish the power of the album as a whole... "Lost In The Night"'s palate-cleansing exorcism leads the way to "The Devil Had A Hold On The Land". A surprise cover of Vincent Gallo's "So Sad" is the drowsy Sunday morning hangover to "Ecstasy Snowbirds"' woke realization of a failed relationship. "Take Head Calumniators" is a call to arms against deceivers, breaking the introspection of the two previous songs. The second side features four songs of loose optimism performed in a mixture of styles. "Some People Have Winged Fortune" fractures a version of the melody from Orange Juice's "Upwards And Onwards" to a message of hope. "Urban Pilgrims", lyrically reminiscent of Band Of Holy Joy's early song craft, is a half-told tale of spiritual renewal in a landscape which would seem antipathetic to any form of rebirth. "Electric Pilgrims" links the process of aging to the nearness of satori. The epic closer "We Are Sailing To The Island Of Light" is a dark sea shanty championing the shambolic assortment of people who offer hope in dark times; a riposte to those forces of evil called out in "The Devil Has A Hold On The Land".

UNICAZURN Sensudestricto LP
Has there ever been a better time to fuck off to the stars? Is a prison breakout "escapism"? Crisis carve some wound-space to let the dreams back in. In nights we turn to fire, in flight you burst into stone, where are the exits in this theater of the damned? Strict luggage allocations -- guitar (D. Knight), saxophone (S. Thrower) -- and all the electronics your thoughts can carry. Headspin echoes, round and around, tilt wind-sails at a dark horizon, cut a stutter through the distance barrier. In to be out through the structure of the eye, encrusted with rotor-slime, pushing on through border erosions as everything melts into smoke, burning objects may be closer than they appear. Nebulae dazzle the shadows, tunnel through memories and the pulp-mass of neurons, forwards heading backwards, end of tether snapped, slide into the earth like ancient worms and breathe. UnicaZürn's core instrumentation blends analog synthesizer, mellotron, and electric piano with electric guitar and saxophone. Knight is renowned for his pioneering multi-textured fretwork with Danielle Dax and Shock-Headed Peters, and his ambient guitar settings for Lydia Lunch, while Thrower's reed playing provided rage and melancholy in Coil and turns to electro-acoustic texture in Cyclobe.

BAMBOO Daughters Of The Sky CD
Bamboo, Nick Carlisle and Rachel Horwood, present their third studio album, Daughters Of The Sky. The album was written and recorded over a two-year period where ideas and arrangements were allowed to slow-cook and develop over time, in contrast with the last album The Dragon Flies Away (UTR 088CD/LP, 2017) which came together relatively quickly for the duo. The music comprises the usual (for Bamboo) mix of Horwood's flawlessly resonant folk cadence and Carlisle's pristine synth production, whilst TR808 drum machines and samples lock together with acoustic drums, themselves often given the Tony Visconti, Eventide Harmoniser treatment of Berlin-era Bowie albums. Ancient ARP synthesizers and Mellotron flutes and horns sit next to contemporary digital sounds and samples in a hauntological tapestry over which Horwood can intone her sometimes mournful, often uplifting vocals. Although Daughters Of The Sky breaks away from the storybook concept format of The Dragon Flies Away, in that sense being more similar to Bamboo's debut album Prince Pansori Priestess" (UTR 075CD/LP, 2016), there are still recurrent themes that run through the album such as motherhood, the cyclical nature of life, emancipation and liberation. What might be the centerpiece of the album, "East Of The Sun / West Of The Moon", an 11-minute epic, begins with a serene, desolate ambient intro which eventually transports us over the waves to some unknown land. Bar the brief instrumental coda "Tenebrae", the album ends on an optimistic note with "A World Is Born", an upbeat song of renewal. Horwood sings of the creation of a new world for a new generation, out of the ashes of a society stagnating under the collapsing weight of late capitalism. Saxophones provided by Emma Gatrill answer each vocal line in call and response style over more harmonized drums reminiscent of Bowie's Low (1977). Carlisle originally wrote the music following the death of Bowie, and Horwood added some Prince-like backing vocals. Although her lyric makes no reference to the loss of these giants, their influence hang over the song in a way which can only add to the sense of hope and rebirth, a sense which is indeed felt throughout the album. Cosmic pop, like Kate Bush in Yellow Magic Orchestra. CD version comes in gatefold sleeve.

BONACCORSO QUARTET FEATURING STEFANO DI BATTISTA, ROSARIO Macedonian Lines CD
"A New Home" is where man, spirit and music creatively converged and formed a new starting point. After sixty years of living with music, Rosario Bonaccorso's "new home" provides him with a different, deeper, and more intimate perspective: the result of internal and external renewal, where the changes brought by life were fostered with meditative love of creating. The album's title, however, also speaks for a phase of life where one heads for the far shore in a search for different experiences, visions and inspiration. "Ever since I've been living in this 'New Home', I've been lucky to be able to express my feelings through music in this new album which is a tribute to life -- this immense gift that's been offered to us ... I wrote this thinking of my present life, my future, of my grandson Lorenzo who's just landed here from the universe, of my wife Renate, muse and companion on this trip, of my children who grow and face changing horizons, of my new friends with whom I might grow old; and again, taking the time to give new importance to time itself; such as learning how to slow down and take a break -- to enjoy a blood moon high up in the summer sky. Because I do believe it's only by embracing change that a new phase can be reached in one's life and I just can't stop thanking music for having allowed me to share all this with others. This 'New Home' is quite a remarkable place!" The album contains 11 songs written by Bonaccorso and produced by Jando Music and Via Veneto Jazz, as with his other albums: A Beautiful Story (VVJ 112CD, 2017) and Viaggiando (VVJ 098CD, 2015). It's enriched by the presence of one of the greatest and most widely acclaimed musicians on the international jazz scene, the extraordinary sax player Stefano Di Battista with whom Rosario Bonaccorso, having been part of his bands since 1997, has collaborated for more than two decades. Stefano Di Battista and Rosario Bonaccorso have played together in hundreds of concerts all over the world, with renowned artists such as Lucio Dalla, Michael Brecker, Joe Lovano, Ivan Lins, and have recorded albums for Blue Note with other highly acclaimed jazz stars such as Vince Mendoza, Kenny Barron, Elvin Jones, and Herlin Riley.

DAVACHI, SARAH Pale Bloom CD
"Pale Bloom finds Sarah Davachi coming full circle. After abandoning the piano studies of her youth for a series of albums utilizing everything from pipe and reed organs to analog synthesizers, this prolific Los Angeles-based composer returns to her first instrument for a radiant work of quiet minimalism and poetic rumination. Recorded at Berkeley, California's famed Fantasy Studios, Pale Bloom is comprised of two delicately-arranged sides. The first -- a three-part suite where Davachi's piano acts as conjurer, beckoning Hammond organ and stirring countertenor into a patiently unfolding congress -- recalls Eduard Artemiev's majestic soundtrack for Andrei Tarkovsky's Solaris. 'Perfumes I-III' employs the harmonically rich music of Bach as a springboard for abstract, solemn pieces that sound as haunted as they are dreamlike. While the first half of Pale Bloom showcases Davachi's latent Romanticism, the sidelong 'If It Pleased Me To Appear To You Wrapped In This Drapery' reveals the Mills College graduate's affinity for the work of avant-garde composers La Monte Young and Eliane Radigue. Softly vibrating strings rise and fall like complementary exhalations of breath. As the fluctuating pitches create overtones that pitter and pulse, the piece slowly and subtly evolves -- suggesting a well-tempered stillness, yet without stasis."

As the fluctuating pitches create overtones that pitter and pulse, the piece slowly and subtly evolves -- suggesting a well-tempered stillness, yet without stasis."

MOTHERSHIP Dubby White EP 12"
We R The Aliens is a fresh new label based out of Hamburg and Berlin. The label marks the start of a new chapter for Wareika's beat machine Jakob Seidensticker, former Square Room Heroes' Boronas, and American house import Snad. Together, they are Mothership. The maiden voyage begins with this clubby three-track trip. Groovy technoid cut "Dubby White" sets the course, evolving into the spooky yet driving minimal house track "Melting" featuring Zhiqi Song. Finally, Smallpeople round up the release with an uplifting house remix of "Dubby White" perfect for warmer days.

FAIRUZ Wahdon LP
Wewantsounds continues to pursue its exploration of great Lebanese music with the reissue of Wahdon, released in 1978 by legendary Middle Eastern diva Fairuz and recorded during the Abu Ali sessions (WWSLP 021LP). The album includes the Lebanese dancefloor cult classic, "Al Bostah". 1978 was a turning point for the Lebanese diva. The '70s had seen her rise as an international star, playing sold out concerts in the US and in Europe, and appearing on national TV in France. She had had a long-lasting artistic collaboration with her husband Assi Rahbani and his brother Elias (aka The Rahbani Brothers) who, together, had penned most of the singer's classics. In 1978, Assi who had suffered a brain hemorrhage in 1972 got weaker and the collaboration finally ended (together with their personal relationship). Their 22-year-old son Ziad took over Fairuz's musical reins and set to work on their first album together, Wahdon ("Alone"), serving as her mother's producer, composer and musical director. Wahdon typifies this key moment in Fairuz's career when she switched from traditional to more modern arrangements. The first side of the album encapsulates the more traditional side of the singer with such mesmerizing songs as "Habaitak Ta Neseet Al Naoum" (I Loved You So Much I Forgot To Sleep) or "Ana Indi Haneen" (I'm Nostalgic), filled with gorgeous Arabic strings and percussion. The second side though is a whole different affair. Recorded in Athens at the EMI Greece studio at the same time as the Abu Ali sessions, the two long tracks brings a hipper, contemporary funk and disco feel that has made the album such a collector's item with DJs and diggers around the world. Clocking at almost nine minutes "Al Bostah" (The Bus) tells the story a woman in love remembering a bus journey with her lover under a scorching heat, enhanced by an hypnotic up-tempo funkified disco beat, while "Wahdon" brings a slower and jazzier underlay to Fairuz's superb singing. These tracks shocked some of the diva's fans at the time but they've since passed the test of time and have become highly sought after. Whadon has since become both a classic Fairuz album and a cult Ziad Rahbani production that Wewantsounds is delighted to bring to a wider audience for the first time.

CLARK, ALICE Alice Clark LP
Following the success of Wewantsounds' Alice Clark RSD edition featuring an extra 20-page booklet, the label reissues the standard version of Alice Clark's highly sought-after soul jazz classic produced by Mainstream Records' Bob Shad in 1972. Featuring original artwork, remastered sound making this reissue is the first official reissue of Alice Clark's original album for decades, a long overdue release of one of the best Soul albums ever recorded. When it comes to legendary albums, very few can match the cult status achieved on the international jazz and funk scene, by Alice Clark's eponymous album, recorded for Mainstream Records in 1972. The record which went unnoticed when it first came out has become one of the most sought-after albums ever since it became cult on the London jazz and funk scene in the late '80s. It is now being acknowledged as one of the best soul albums of all-times. Recorded live over two days at the Record Plant studios in New York City, the album was produced by Bob Shad and arranged by jazz veteran Ernie Wilkins with a big band setting. The music is a superb mix of jazz and soul blessed by Clark's superb singing and including two all-time favorites, "Don't You Care" and "Never Did I Stop Loving You" plus a selection of heart-wrenching songs beautifully sung by Clark. Hailed as a soul masterpiece alongside Aretha Franklin or Roberta Flack's best albums, Alice Clark's LP took almost fifty years to achieve classic status and Alice Clark is now finally getting the recognition she deserves.

ARCHITECTURAL Beautiful Life After Death 12"
Architectural returns to Wolfskuil Limited with four exceptional cuts on his Beautiful Life After Death 12-inch. Complex sound design and a warm and open atmosphere go hand-in-hand with the Spanish studio wizard's sonic world. From lush ambient in the title track, the addictive groove in "Piedras" to wobbly modular bass excursions in "Luminous Path" and moody textures from the abyss in "Gris". Architectural covers a lot of ground in just four tracks. Diverse and coherent at the same time, few artists have such a recognizable sound signature as the Barcelona artist.

HIROSE, YUTAKA NOVA + 4 2LP
Double LP version. Gatefold sleeve: Includes liner notes in English and Japanese. WRWTFWW Records present an expanded reissue of one of the most fascinating Japanese ambient/environmental albums ever made, NOVA by Yutaka Hirose, originally released in 1986. The expanded reissue includes the album known as Soundscape 2: Nova, sourced from its original masters, as well as four never-released-before recordings over 50 minutes. Initially released in 1986 as part of the Soundscape series. Commissioned by Misawa Home Corporation for use in their prefabricated houses, Yutaka Hirose's NOVA has grown to become a mythical piece of the Japanese minimalist/ambient/environmental scene of the eighties. Initiated around the enchanting landscapes of the two first tracks recorded for the project, "Nova" and "Epilogue", Yutaka Hirose's magnum opus serenely blends vintage synth with nature sounds, exploring soothing palettes and organic backdrops. For "Slow Sky", Hirose explains he "went for a pointillism-like sound, and tried to express a scenery of awakening, where the portal of a heart is opening up", while on "Humming The Sea", he "tried to compose a kind of music that expresses the daily, lazy life of child-like innocence in a summer vacation in some small town." The bonus material gathers four long unreleased pieces created around the same period of time for installations, described by Yutaka Hirose as "not music per se but rather sound sculptures", and including the haunting "Shadow Of A Water Droplet" which was recorded for an Ikebana exhibition. All in all, NOVA + 4 is a transcendent experience of nature in the urban context, an oeuvre which, much like Midori Takada's Through The Looking Glass (WRWTFWW 018LP/WRWTFWW 019CD/LP, 2017) or Satoshi Ashikawa's Still Way (1999), holds the power to appease the soul in turbulent times. As one inspired YouTube commenter once said when describing Yutaka Hirose's masterstroke: "I can't tell if the birds are singing inside or outside! Thank you!" Includes liner notes in English and Japanese.

WINSTON Under the Influence Volume Seven: A Collection of Rare Soul and Disco 2CD
Z Records continues its commitment to unearthing the obscure and long forgotten tracks from the last 40 years through the ever-popular Under The Influence series. It's now the turn of one of the scenes most prolific but yet unknown collectors, Winston. Outside of the established record collectors Winston is pretty much unknown but those that know of him will tell you that despite his low profile he has one of the best record collections around. Sean P remembers his first trip to Winston's house in the sleeve notes: "When I visited his house for the first time, I felt like a beginner -- my expectations were far exceeded by the neat rows and piles of 12"s and LPs everywhere; and I had brought along a foolscap notebook which after eight hours or so, expanded my wants list considerably. I thumbed through hundreds of weird and mysterious independent and major label releases. Winston played whatever I was interested in hearing, occasionally spinning random 7" ('Space Funk' by Manzel, for example) and various LP cuts of his choice. I had perused around half of the collection by the time I left, but I'll never forget that kid-in-a-toyshop feeling, along with the realization of Winston's buddha-like status as a master of this arcane pastime . . . Winston is still doing the 'rounds weekly; and since the Hammersmith Black Music Record events of the mid-80s, he's missed few record fairs, if any -- trading with dealers & fellow collectors and parting with cash when necessary. Surprisingly, he has no truck with the internet -- somewhat curious to the rest of us who now can't imagine life without it. And as a man with no online presence, knowledge of Winston's existence is restricted to the real world. Some justification, perhaps, for giving this fervent ambassador of all things boogie an opportunity to share some of his favorites beyond those in the know. So for Volume Seven of the Under The Influence series Winston has included tracks taking in soul, funk, disco, and boogie with many of the tracks costing hundreds if you were able to find the originals." Double-CD version features: Mary Gold, Doug Payne & Polygon, Bollyn Thompson, Betty Padgett, Bilalian Creation, Expose, Lord Of Storm, Jungle Band, RG's All Nite Funk Band, T.T. Sotto, Bramsam, Jonnie Vibes Lambert, Synergy, Donnell Pitman, Al "Man" Muntzie and The Embraceables, Are & Be, Juice, The G.T.'s, Eklips, Ms. Victoria Barnes, The Olympics, Suave, and The Rappers.
