THOLLOT, JACQUES More Intra Musique LP
Restocked; produced in collaboration with the legendary Jac Berrocal's label d'Avantage, More Intra Musique is the second LP in Alga Marghen's series dedicated to previously unreleased recording by the drummer and experimentalist Jacques Thollot. While the furious Intra Musique free jazz first LP (ALGA 043LP, 2017) was centered on a live recording with Michel Portal, Eddie Gaumont, and Mimi Lorenzini at the Faculty of Law in Paris, on an evening in 1969, it is an unexpected Jacques Thollot that you encounter on this second LP, vivid and blazing even more than you might have already known. Jacques Thollot was a major force in the French free jazz scene, collaborating with artists at the level of Don Cherry, Steve Lacy, Sonny Sharrock, Joachim Kühn as well as with French pioneers Jef Gilson and Barney Wilen. Starting from 1971 he released Quand Le Son Devient Aigu, Jeter La Giraffe A La Mer or Watch Devil Go on Futura and Palm Records, or some of the most relevant and revolutionary sonic masterpieces in France. More Intra Musique is free improvisations of course, but also synthetic jitters, musique concrete, and loop experiments, sketched pop songs, minimalist trances with African accents, or simply the promiscuity of a lullaby or the voice of a child posed like a bird in a Norman garden. These long-lost visionary recordings featuring Eddie Gaumont on prepared piano and Jacques Thollot on drums, piano, prepared piano, synth, and tapes are an absolute revelation which make you rethink everything you know about French free improvisation. Tape manipulation created as a potential background for a live set... Bursting rehearsal with Eddie Gaumont... Is the piano well prepared? Besides the stingy mention Intra Musique sticked on the reel, nothing is known of this recording. Edition of 350 copies.

LADIK, KATALIN Phonopoetics LP
Phonopoetics is the first ever survey of seminal Hungarian artist Katalin Ladik's sonic efforts. A thing of beauty, drawing from the period between 1968 and 1993, its two stunning sides shatter the lines between performance, the spoken word, fine art, and experimental music, offering the terms to rethink how each is understood. Born in 1942, Katalin Ladik has lived a wild and multifaceted creative life -- beginning primarily as a poet of the written word, expanding into experimental theatre during the mid-1970s, and ultimately becoming an artist whose practice also incorporates sound and visual poetry, performance art, experimental music, audio plays, happenings, mail art, collage, and photography, built around visual and vocal expression, as well as movement and gesture. Phonopoetics, Alga Marghen's remarkably diverse survey of Ladik's audio work, is a refracting lens into this dense and dynamic world -- a totem which belongs to a sprawling puzzle of highly nuanced personal, social, political, and existential themes, springing from the feminist and gender neutral concerns of Eastern Europe during the 1960s and '70s. The totality of Ladik's practice, particularly as it unfolds across the two sides of Phonopoetics, can be understood as a radical rethinking of the potential, manifestation, and application of poetry, as well as the fundamentals of vocalization. Delving toward the very origins of consciously created sound -- spoken or otherwise, her efforts unseat the divisions placed between literary, musical, theatrical, and visual disciplines, joining them through the fundamental need and right to express. With the excepting of two works, "Shaman Song / Sámánének" (1968), and "Ufo-Nopoetica" (1976-1993), the featured body of work was created between 1974 and 1979, a prolific period which also witnessed her working within the Novi Sad Theatre and Radio Novi Sad. Primal and poetic, with shamanic overtones and therapeutic mechanisms of liberation, capturing the image of an almost entirely unheard history within the field of feminist expression developed by pioneering figures like Simone Forti and Joan La Barbara. In the words of visionary sound poet Henri Chopin, Ladik is "a great, magical voice." Alga Marghen's issue of Phonopoetics places this little heard, and profoundly important artist into the center of your consciousness where she will no doubt remain. A vital entry in the field of sound art, historic Eastern European experimental practice, and sound poetry. Introduction by Henri Chopin. Edition of 300.

O'SHEA, MICHAEL Michael O'Shea CD
AllChival present a reissue of Michael O'Shea's self-titled album, originally released on Wire's Dome Records imprint in 1982. Having sold his instruments to fund a nomadic 1970s lifestyle, eccentric Irish experimentalist Michael O'Shea was forced to create his own handmade answer to the sitars and zelochords he'd become accustomed to playing on his travels around the globe. Using an old door, 17 strings, chopsticks and combining them with phasers, echo units and amplification, the new device was to become his signature sound, mixing Irish folk influences with Asian and North African sounds in a mesmerizing and soulful new way. Born in Northern Ireland but raised in the Republic, O'Shea was keen to travel and escape the troubles of his home. Wandering throughout Europe and the Middle East, O'Shea found himself living and working in Bangladesh in the mid-Seventies where he learned to play sitar. A later period spent busking in France accompanied on zelochord by Algerian musician Kris Hosylan Harp led to O'Shea's idea of combining both instruments as a homebuilt instrument -- Mo Cara (Irish for "My Friend"). A combination of dulcimer, zelochord, and sitar, O'Shea would play it with a pair of chopsticks, striking the strings softly using Irish folk rhythms mixed with the rich, nostalgic sounds of the many Asian artists he'd encountered on his travels. Perfecting the instrument on the streets, there were further spells spent busking in the underground stations and cafes of London's West End and Covent Garden. His work with Rick Wakeman never saw the light of day but O'Shea's contact with the world of post-punk London ensured his name would live on. Introduced to Wire's Bruce Gilbert and Graham Lewis via cartoonist Tom Johnston, O'Shea eventually acquiesced to an open invite to record at their studio. Turning up unannounced in the summer of 1981 the LP was recorded in a day in the legendary Blackwing Studios and released on Dome the year after. The first side features the fifteen-minute masterpiece "No Journeys End" with the B side featuring more input from Wire in processing the Mo Chara sound. After an aborted LP with The The's Matt Johnson the following year, O'Shea quietly disappeared from the formal recording world and his brief but unique contribution to the music world came to a sad end with O'Shea's passing in 1991. Remastered and reissued with the approval of both Dome and his surviving siblings. CD version comes with a 12-page booklet.

Originally released in 1986, World Of Echo is a deeply intimate and meditative work of awe-inspiring grace and remains a timeless work of sublime beauty. Arthur's aim was to achieve what he calls 'the most vivid rhythmic reality,' with just cello, voice, and echoes. COOPER, MIKE Distant Songs Of Madmen LP
A new Mike Cooper release is always a great event. Mike Cooper on the recording: "Distant Songs Of Madmen was recorded live in Palermo and was my solo set in a concert organized by Lelio Gianetti and Curva Minore, which included Truth In The Abstract Blues and Eugene Chadbourne. My set was free improvisation; some cover versions of folk and pop songs and some of my own songs. The title of the record and some of the improvised pieces were taken from Sam Shepard's writing. Sam, one of my favorite writers, has sadly died since I recorded this record and I dedicate it to his memory." Artwork by Italian artist Carla Indipendente. ABATE, MAURIZIO The Maadi Sessions LP
Maurizio Abate on The Maadi Sessions: "I visited Egypt for the first time in October 2016, spending a week there, and I went back for a longer period the next February. Both times I stayed at Sara and Alberto's place, a couple of friends who have been living in the Maadi district of Cairo for about a year. The first impact with the city and its inhabitants was definitely strong: I had trouble in defining the energy which pervades the streets 24 hours a day and the feeling of perpetual movement one gets from it. Although this vortex was fascinating, it sometimes originated some kind of alienation and estrangement on my behalf. I had to distance myself from the excess of stimuli. During my first visit, I was especially struck by the sounds, so I recorded some of them over my following stay, and I tried to mix them with my electric guitar, a sort of conversation between the inner world and the outside one. During the sessions in Alberto's house, I also experimented new techniques and effects on the guitar, approaching the instrument in a broader sense. The sessions originated the pieces on this record, which also feature a collaboration with Alberto Boccardi on one track, named after his house and headquarters of Canale Undici."

ALMAGEST! Fun House Mirror LP
Fun House Mirrors is the fourth album by Almagest!, the second under the Almagest! moniker being the first two releases credited to founding members Fabrizio Modonese Palumbo and Ernesto Tomasini. After four years the band comes back with a new sound far from the piano driven pieces of the previous Messier Objects (2013) and manifesting itself into five long electric richly textured and arranged, as the title suggests, conceptually and sonically distorted cinematic compositions made of the fabric of sensual and disturbing dreams and sang by the many voices of Ernesto Tomasini in a variety of European, lost and alien languages. Almagest! is: Ernesto Tomasini, Fabrizio Modonese Palumbo, Paul Beauchamp, Evor Ameisie. Fun House Mirrors has been engineered by Paul Beauchamp; produced by Palumbo and Tomasini; mastered by James Plotkin and features contributions by Canadian cello player Julia Kent, drummer Marco "Il Bue" Schiavo (from cult band Larsen), Colombian multi-instrumentalist Maria Mallol Moya, and experimental brass player Ramon Moro.

DEAD GUM Meta LP
Backwards presents a full-length album from the amazing Greek artist, Dead Gum. Meta, Dead Gum's sophomore studio album, constituted a challenge for its maker. While its predecessor Gainer (2014) hollered for awareness and singularity, this one indulges into multi-layered, ambiguous narratives tracing an impossible duality. With abiding influences that distance him from conspicuous contemporary norms, Panagiotis Spoulos creates a nocturnal, desolate sound collage, invoking a meta-purpose for a/the current status quo. The public character of the endeavor is almost jostled by the private-ness of the overall statement; the invitation thus corresponds to a peek into a baffled brain and a rove around gradual levels of muffled alarm calls and grimy smells. Meta is no post-something. Meta merely stands half foot ahead of absolute nothingness, the true end of it all. Edition of 300.

SILENT CARNIVAL Somewhere LP
Somewhere is the third album from Silent Carnival, the sonic creature that Marco Giambrone raised since 2012. Production, recordings and mixing was managed by Giambrone himself. Recorded between January and February 2018 in the home-studio based in Cammarata (Sicily), Somewhere confirms band members and constant collaborators Alfonso De Marco, Caterina Fede, and Andrea Serrapiglio adding new musicians like Stefano De Ponti, Luca Andriolo, and Luca Serrapiglio. This is an album about visions, dreams, and premonitions with many different vibes, widening the color palette than in the past. Less drones and more acoustic instruments to dress a songwriting free from fences of music genre. A changing sound, like the "Calvary" procession that combines the Sicilian Easter's lamentations with the pagan vibes of unknown worlds. The confessions without absolution of "Innocence" and the desert in the backyard of "Somewhere" only confirm the intimate and at the same time merciless attitude of this album. Edition of 300.

ORSI, FABIO Sterminato Piano LP
"I've known Fabio Orsi for almost fifteen years now, artistically and humanly. Since the days of Osci his first album released by Small Voices, my label at that time, up to some essential records published by A Silent Place, another label that I managed, in a period that seems almost unrepeatable. Each of his work, whether in music or photography, is always a certainty for me, but lately also a surprise; in fact Fabio Orsi has learned to surprise himself and surprise us: this new creature is different from his previous releases, but is always touched by that talent and crystalline class that distinguishes him; after all these years, I can affirm it without fear of appearing too enthusiastic or even partisan. The new work Sterminato Piano settles among the best things of Fabio Orsi, but also in some ways, among the most unexpected and original. After eight years in Berlin, his return to Puglia (south of Italy) is restoring new life and new creativity and new energy. In fact, the new album is full of energy and warmth, with patterns, sequences, and dancefloor beats of our dreams." --LP Cover artwork by Italian illustrator Mastereaster. Edition of 300.

This album continues the trend. Cale plays a few songs alone (though the overdubbed parts sound remarkably spare), including the title track. Closer To You finds him electronically treating his vocals, a technique that surprisingly makes him sound as down-to-earth as ever." --All Music

BLANK FORMS Blank Forms, Vol. 4: Intelligent Life Book
Taking its name from Maryanne Amacher's visionary, unrealized opera, the fourth issue of Blank Forms' journal, Intelligent Life, features a select group of unpublished, newly translated, or otherwise rare texts. The issue opens with a short literary essay by the author Marcia Douglas, in which a deep bass riddim guides a deaf narrator and a reincarnated Bob Marley through important sites in Rastafarianism's development. Next come two interviews with crucial figures in postwar avant-garde music: the Japanese guitarist Kazuo Imai and the American composer Robert Ashley, along with pianist and frequent collaborator "Blue" Gene Tyranny. The previously unpublished interview with Imai was conducted by Blank Forms' editor and artistic director Lawrence Kumpf during Imai's first trip to the United States, in 2018, and finds the artist reflecting on recent work with the collective Marginal Consort as well as his foundational experiences playing with two other titans of Japanese experimentalism, Takehisa Kosugi and Masayuki Takayanagi. The interview with Ashley and "Blue" Gene, meanwhile, first published in German in 1984 on the occasion of a staging of Ashley's opera Atalanta, was translated for the first time into in English for this publication. Intelligent Life continues with a series of longer pieces showcasing a diverse set of complex practices and histories, beginning with that of Detroit-based artist Onyx Ashanti. Onyx contributes his own Octavia Butler-referencing "sonocybernetic manifesto", first published online in 2016, which exists simultaneously as theoretical treatise, memoir, and practical guide to his idiosyncratic technology-based practice. Following this is a comprehensive essay on Catherine Christer Hennix's engagement with intuitionism and other esoteric approaches to math, written by the mathematician and musician Spencer Gerhardt. Gerhardt's lucid, previously unpublished essay serves as a necessary complement to Blank Forms Editions' forthcoming collection of Hennix's abstruse, mostly unpublished body of writing, Poësy Matters and Other Matters. The issue continues with a sort of titular essay, a rich analysis of Amacher's "Intelligent Life" -- the first such piece on this work -- by Amacher scholar Amy Cimini. Intelligent Life was an incredibly prescient work that sought to upend any remaining vestiges of traditional operatic form and staging. Intelligent Life -- the journal issue -- then concludes with a lengthy interview with the artist Walter De Maria. One of the few interviews De Maria gave in his lifetime, this one, created for the Archives of American Art in 1972, sheds significant light on De Maria's early intellectual and artistic development as well as his work as a musician. Although he largely stopped playing music by 1970, and although few recordings of his efforts exist, De Maria played alongside musicians ranging from Lou Reed to Don Cherry to Henry Flynt. Edited by Lawrence Kumpf. Other contributors and featured artists include: Werner Durand, Peter Gente, Heidi Paris, Adrian Rew, Paul Cummings. 302 pages; 6x8 inches; paperback.

SADAF History Of Heat LP
Sadaf H Nava is an Iranian composer, violinist, and visual artist whose multidisciplinary interventions include sound, video, performance, and text. History Of Heat is an eroto-intellectual retelling of a love story. It is the scholarship of heat, and the sources of its production in the body: desire, exaltation, anticipation, fear, rage, and mourning. It is a fable circulating through the nerves, pumped and distributed by its own mythologies. Through different chapters, you follow the heroine from the initial desire to love, the sensual pull which oscillates between the grotesque and sacred longing of the flesh ("L'Enfer en pleine lumière", or, "Hell In Plain Sight"), to the sudden ghostlike appearance of the "Other" (with "Apparition") as a projection of the dream. "Animal" speaks of instinct, the smell of the beloved, already the deconstruction of the divine back into the realm of the physical. The title track sings the hesitation of love, the precipice of openness, and the invitation of the contract. In "Perfection", the pressure, which keeps the relationship on the pedestal of the absolute, stunts and paralyses love. "Tiny Engine" speaks of mechanical attachment, attachment to the lover as habit, as a second nature, and the call to the other person as a magnet. In "Ditectrice", the madness and the folly of separation spawns war and confusion. "Feed Him" follows with resignation and exhaustion. "War Text" brings forth the devastation, the peace treaty and finally the metaphysical divorce. In "Guttermoon", the vita contemplativa begins, the blood starts to cool, the scene is a ghost town. "Wrong God" similarly winds down as an ode to remorse and mourning. Finally, "Cinema Verité" closes out the album with a mistrust of "reality". History Of Heat is an experimental narrative and cinematic pastiche of all original and self-recorded material. A chaotic mix of sounds, both analog and digitally produced, recalling a warlike interpersonal breakdown. The mood established by the lyrical content of the piece is meant to be demanding, enclosing the listener within a unique and compelling cocoon of otherworldly sound. The album is framed within a discursive love story which reflects larger relational problems and interpersonal traumas. Looped vocals act as incantations woven in and out of lyrical singing and spoken word. The instrumentals embrace chaos and intensity. Improvised violin and broken-down beats complement and balance the melancholic overtones which flutter above off the grid rhythms in this charged ficto-personal account.

PABLO, AUGUSTUS King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown LP
Reissue of the 1976 historic collaboration between producer instrumentalist Augustus Pablo and dub engineer King Tubby."If you had to pick one album that best represents the pinnacle of the art of dub, you'd cull the candidates down pretty quickly to ten or 12, and it would get very difficult after that. Few would fault you for ending up with this one, though, which stands as perhaps the finest collaboration between two of instrumental reggae's leading lights: producer and melodica player Augustus Pablo and legendary dub pioneer King Tubby. Among other gems, this album offers its title track -- a dub version of Jacob Miller's 'Baby I Love You So'-- which is widely regarded as the finest example of dub ever recorded. But the rest of the album is hardly less impressive. 'Each One Dub', another cut on a Jacob Miller rhythm, possesses the same dark and mystical ambience, if not quite the same emotional energy, as 'King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown,' and the version of the epochal 'Satta Massaganna' that closes the album is another solid winner. Pablo's trademark 'Far East' sound (characterized by minor keys and prominent melodica lines) is predominant throughout, and is treated with care and grace by King Tubby, who has rarely sounded more inspired in his studio manipulations than he does here. Absolutely essential." --Rick Anderson, All Music

VERTICE Decay Music n. 1: Besoch Trauma LP
Almost all great music is bridge -- spanning geography and time, defying easy definition. It is the product of collaboration and mutual respect -- individual voice, fused within a collective force. These are the roots for the trio Vértice, an unlikely formation by experimental luminaries, Maurizio Bianchi, Saverio Evangelista, and Juan Manuel Cidrón -- each hailing from their own discrete musical geography in Italy and Spain. Besoch Trauma, a remarkable project's first recorded outing, years in the making, is released by Milan-based Die Schachtel on their new imprint, Decay Music. Decay Music highlights inspired contemporary experimental efforts in the ambient, ethereal, and emotively abstract. Each member of Vértice comes from a luminous and historic musical pedigree. Maurizio Bianchi is one of Italy's earliest and most important figures in Industrial music, beginning to issue a wild series of visionary releases during the late 1970s. Saverio Evangelista is well known for his decades longs efforts within the seminal outfits, Esplendor Geométrico and M.S.B., while Juan Manuel Cidrón is one of the great cult figures of Spanish electronic music. Together they shed skin, reforming as one, diving into uncharted waters, while remaining unrecognizable within. Slow, sophisticated, and a deeply meditative, minimalist wonder, Besoch Trauma progresses like a melancholic dream -- the slow wilting of sounds, pondering their own rebirth. Repetitive and restrained piano lines rise among drifting synthesizer tones and textural ambiances, fall away and return, fracture, break, stagger, and distort across the entirety of the albums first side, while murky, implacable sounds breed with flirting electronics and piano, sculpting the vast expanse of abstraction which emerges across the entirety of the second -- clattering and droning, filled with air, fading melodies, and rippling tones. Two slow burning sides, unfolding with greater depth at every turn. Bianchi, Evangelista, and Cidrón build a rich tapestry of creatively challenging sound, a hypothetical imagining of historic minimalism and ambient music, bred with industrial and punk. Pro-printed inner sleeve and jacket, containing a silkscreened PVC sleeve. 180 gram marble vinyl; Edition of 250, one-time pressing.

PILIA, STEFANO Decay Music n. 2: In Girum Imus Nocte Et Consumimur Igni LP
Milan based Die Schachtel presents In Girum Imus Nocte Et Consumimur Igni (We Turn Round In The Night And, Behold, We Are Consumed By Fire), a work for solo guitar by the Italian composer Stefano Pilia. This marks the second release on a new series on Die Schachtel's imprint, Decay Music. Born in Genoa and based in Bologna, Pilia is a guitar player and electro-acoustic composer concerned with the sculptural properties of sound, offering particular focus to its relationship to space, memory, and the suspension of time -- the conceptual undercurrent of In Girum Imus Nocte Et Consumimur Igni. Comprised of corresponding compositional triptychs on each of its two sides, the final act of both featuring contributions from experimental music heavyweights, Rodrigo D'Erasmo on violin and David Grubbs on piano, the album builds vast, inhabitable expanses of ambience from long tones and shattered cuts and collisions, punctuated by clusters, sweeps, and careful interventions of texture and note. In Girum Imus Nocte Et Consumimur Igni -- as this eerie palindrome and endecasillabo (a syntactic form in classical Italian verse) from Virgil suggests -- moves through a path of alchemical symbolic narratives and poetic abstraction humbly reminiscent and allegorically inspired by Dante's Divine Comedy and by the Nekyia ("evocation of the dead") parts found in Book IX of Homer's Odyssey. Based on symmetrical harmonic, melodic and narrative properties and filled with intangible narrative, haunting abstraction, fleeting visions of eerie space, and slow-motion melody, Girum Imus Nocte Et Consumimur Igni pushes electroacoustic music toward symphonic dimensions -- dramatic arcs with echoes of high minimalism, historic ambient music, and the radicalism indeterminate forms. Through a wise, peculiar and abstracted use of guitar instrumentation, the sound surface of the compositions reaches deeper electroacoustic-symphonic dimensions, echoing minimalist works, ambient music and indeterminate contemporary forms. Pro-printed inner sleeve and jacket, containing a silkscreened PVC sleeve. 180 gram marble vinyl; Edition of 250, one-time pressing.

SIMPLE SYMMETRY Gilgamesh 12"
Russian brothers Sasha and Sergey Lipsky return to Disco Halal for the third time under their famed Simple Symmetry project. The Gilgamesh EP draws inspiration from the epic novel of the same name, the oldest story known to man. Leading with the title track, Simple Symmetry teams up with Mexican producer Inigo Vontier for a signature Shamanic chugger whilst one of their solo efforts "Fight" is a string-heavy, psychedelic soundscape. Named after Gilgamesh's faithful sidekick, "Enkidu" continues this kaleidoscopic theme with krautrock influences with Adam Port's "Tulum By Night" contrasting edit turns the record into a big room melody.

SERPENTE Parada LP
Lisbon-based Bruno Silva enacts pure voodoo with extended, restless LinnDrum workouts that take Prince's distinctive LM-1 signatures as a starting point for loose-limbed tribal jams that flow with the color of the Brazilian carnival and the rhythmic psychedelia of hardcore jungle. The title Parada cannily nods both to Prince's Parade (1986) and the percussion of carnival parades, speaking to a plurality of polyrhythms in a tradition of fusion music that seeks to meld myriad forms of communal, ritualistic and ecstatic music -- not a million miles from the bare carnival funk of Parade's "New Position." In six parts ranging from extended runs of drumkit-falling-down-stairs to nimble junglist mutations and rapid, darting concisions, Serpente spells out a heavily intoxicating and intuitive sort of rhythmic psychedelia that lives up to a broad palette of influences ranging from Haitian voodoo ceremonies and central African drum circles, through to the Sun Ra Arkestra and Alan Silva's Celestial Communion Orchestra, via Keith Hudson's dub transcendence, and the rude modernism of UK rave and virulent styles currently coming from Lisbon ghettos on the Príncipe label. In attempting to untie and unite these worldly references, an asymmetric percussive friction and hypnotically unresolved tension naturally emerges from Serpente's flux of machine-made patterns. It's there in the restlessly gnashing, swinging brilliance of "Nivel de Chama" and the exceptional mix of detuned Linn drums and reticulated jungle breaks in "Trama," while the B-side probes this idea in three subtly agitated, but more spaced-out "Símbolo" parts, and finally with a sublime tension between his twitchy percussive saccades and celestial synth pads in "Nivel de Cinza." Parada is pure body music in a minimalist/maximalist way that acknowledges both physical and spiritual needs, and requires a dancing or thinking body in order to properly unlock its purple magic.

JOHANSSON & SIMON JAMES PHILLIPS, SVEN-AKE Songs from Elsewhere LP
Duo recordings by Sven-Åke Johansson (vocals) and Simon James Phillips (piano), made in 2017 in Johansson's studio in Berlin. Sven-Åke Johansson on the release: "Simon arrived in my studio with songs by Jean Sibelius to try out. However, being bad at singing from sheet music, I wasn't quite able to perform them as intended. So we instead went for an improvisational approach, using existing texts of mine and, in parts, of his as the basis for our performances and recordings. The two voices are contrapuntal, the piano cannot really be called the accompaniment, it is almost autonomous: more melody than accompaniment." Gatefold sleeve, including printed inner sleeve with lyrics; Edition of 300.Simon James Phillips is an Australian composer and pianist working in the contexts of classical, experimental, and improvisational music. KRUCZYNSKI, BARTOSZ Baltic Beat II LP
Birdsong and bright mornings announce the arrival of spring, and Growing Bin Records celebrate the season of rebirth with the return of a hardy perennial. In the three years since he introduced the world to his Baltic Beat (2016), Bartosz Kruczynski has traded dub techno, Berlin electronics, and jazzy Balearic on a string of highly-regarded labels. Now the Polish musician is back in the Growing Bin Records, ready to take you on another audio adventure through the meadows and forests of his native land. Vivid LP opener "Pastoral Sequences" leads you down the garden path, around the lakeside and across the train tracks, striking a cinematic tone as gentle piano and subdued synth tones drift around natural field recordings. Dip a toe in the stream and feel the breeze between your fingers as you stroll towards the Balearic brilliance of "In the Garden", a carefree cooler built on a subtle bossa rhythm, serene chords and chiming mallets. Bartosz reprises the aquatic grandeur of his first Baltic Beat on the immersive "Petals", a selected ambient work where tangerine pads underpin interlocking electronics and stately keys. Guitars ring out, Reich's mallets ripple and well-tempered piano drift over a thick sequence as "Voices" propels you to the halfway point with soft power. The B side opens with the delicate hypnotism of "If You Go Down In The Woods Today", a modern minimalist masterpiece alive with circular mallets and sultry woodwind, before "The Orchard" paints an impressionistic vignette from the same palette. Shifting focus but not feeling Kruczynski takes you home "Along The Sun Drenched Road" in two stages; the first a gorgeous combination of the acoustic and electronic where hints of dub techno sit beneath languid piano notes, the second an Eastern-tinged reprise of the album's opening and a welcome return home before the storm breaks.

ATTARAZAT ADDAHABIA & FARADJALLAH Al Hadaoui CD
"Habibi Funk is back with another album from Casablanca. Completely unreleased album which was recorded in Morocco in 1973 by three generation family band. A unique blend of Gnawa, Funk and Rock. Traditional Moroccan music meets electronic guitars and dense layers of percussion by a band that used to run in the same circles as Fadoul (And actually wrote one of his songs). Attarazat Addahabia & Faradjallah's album came to us as quite a mystery. Our friends from Radio Martiko got access to the studio archive of the Boussiphone label and a reel labeled 'Faradjallah' was among the items they had found there. After listening to the selection of reels they borrowed, Radio Martiko felt it was not a fit for their label and helped us licensing it from Mr. Boussiphone instead. We knew nothing about the band. We just had the reel with the music but very little information. What we knew was that the music was incredible and very unique. Gnawa sounds were combined with funky electronic guitars, very dense layers of percussions and female backing vocals more reminiscent of musical styles further south than Morocco. We started asking around whether anyone knew the band with no immediate success until we asked Tony Day, a musician from Morocco who helped us during our search for Fadoul's family. His sharp memory came through once again, remembering all the names of the Attarazat Addahabia band members and even how to contact the bands singer and leader Abdelakabir Faradjallah. After visiting him at his home in Casablanca with our Moroccan colleague Sabrina multiple times, he shared his personal story. His father arrived in Casablanca from Aqqa at the age of six and his mother came from Essaouira. Abdelakabir was born in the neighbourhood of Benjdia in 1942. Abdelakabir Faradjallah studied fine arts in Casablanca, graduating in 1962. He also played soccer in the second team of 'Jeunesse Societe One'. His brother-in-law Ibrahim Sadr worked for one of the biggest football teams of the time in Morocco called 'Moroco Sportive Union', which allowed him to travel to France occasionally. While Ibrahim was never part of the band he brought along a few instruments from trips. Yet the majority of the instruments they could not afford to buy were built by Faradjallah and Abderrazak, Faradjallah's brother who passed away early. For instance, they had built a Spanish guitar and a drum made of wood barrel and sheepskin by themselves. During the 1950s Faradjallah was booked as a singer for surprise parties with friends. He started to write his first songs including 'L'gnawi' in 1967 and wanted to make people discover Gnawa culture, or maybe rather his take on the culture to be more exact. Faradjallah recalls his first interaction with the genre in the streets of the Dern neighbourhood, where he used to go to elementary school. Gnawa is one of the essential musical genres of Morocco. It combines ritual poetry with traditional dances and music linked with a spiritual foundation. Musically a lot of influences originated from West Africa as well as Sudan. Gnawa is usually played by a selection of specific instruments such as the qaraqab (large iron castanets centrally associated with the music), the hajhouj (a three-string lute), guembri loudaâ (a three stringed bass instrument) and the tbel (large drums). People would put shells on their clothes and instruments and use incense at their parties. 'Sidi darbo lalla - lala derbo khadem...' came from Gnawa verses Faradjallah used to sing when he was 14. The lyrics tackle a global (im)balance of power and the question of social status in this course. The band Attarazat Addahabia was formed in 1968. The original line-up included 14 members, all from the same family. They played their first small concerts here and there starting in 1969. Later in 1973 they performed bigger shows for instance at the Municipal Theatre followed by the 'Al Massira Show' at Velodrome Stadium in downtown Casablanca. Their first album Al Hadaoui was recorded at Boussiphone studios in 1972 and was never released before. Nobody seems to remember the exact reason why Boussiphone ended up deciding not to put the album out. The album's title track also served as the basis for Fadoul's 'Maktoub Lah', who frequented the same circles as the band for some time. Their shows sometimes could go as long as 12 hours, starting at 5pm in the afternoon, with an occasional break here and there. In the 1980s the band took a brief break. Faradjallah recalled the reason for that break like this: 'Zaki, the bands drummer, had fallen in love with a young girl from Mohammedia. Soon after, he fell very ill. The group members were convinced that the girl had given him 's'hor' (a kind of local Moroccan version of 'black magic'). For four years, the whole group stopped playing. It was unthinkable to find another drummer to replace Zaki, even temporarily.' So they waited four years for Zaki to 'get back on his feet' before going back on stage. Apart from very few gigs here and there Faradjallah stopped playing music in the mid-1990s. Some members from the younger generations formed a new band and still play frequently to this day."

ERTUNC SEXTET, HUSEYIN A New World 2LP
Holiday Records have worked with Hüseyin Ertunç during his terrestrial transit. After the label reissued his wonderful album Musikî in 2016 (privately released on Intex Sound in 1974) and a few collaborative albums with the Konstrukt collective, in 2017 they finally managed to invite him, Do?an Do?usel, Cem Tan, and Umut Ça?lar to play some shows in Italy as a quartet. Things got really complicated when their visas got rejected -- only one week before their plane was scheduled to take off -- but then Holidays Records found a stalwart supporter of free jazz music at the phone of the Italian Embassy and incredibly they got the visas in time so they could spend a whole week with Hüseyin and his band, touring Italy and playing four shows of the best spiritual free jazz the label heard in a long while. Right after that, the label took the chance to book a recording session at the good old Outside Inside Studio, where their loyal partner Matt Bordin captured on tape two days of improvisation by Hüseyin Ertunç (Fender Rhodes electric piano, Philicorda organm and chant), Umut Ça?lar (percussion and bamboo flutes), Do?an Do?usel (double bass), Cem Tan (drums), joined for this special occasion by the almighty Jooklo Duo: Virginia Genta (tenor and sopranino saxophones, clarinet, flutes) and David Vanzan (percussion). What came out of this is an incredible musical document, and not only for the fact that -- unfortunately -- it was Hüseyin's last session on this world. Edition of 300."Most of Ertunç's recorded appearances have been on drum set, where he's employed a massive and materialist cymbal approach that takes Sunny Murray's explosive chatter as a lifting-off point. Ertunç waxed one LP as a leader in 1974, Musikî (with then-regular partners Michael Cosmic and Phill Musra, issued on the tiny Intex label), and returned to Turkey in the early 1990s. Ertunç's playing, relentless as it might be, evinces a strident, swinging quality that reaches back decades. His pianistic approach is rooted in the outpouring of voluminous, allover rhythm in concentrated shards. One might first think of early Cecil Taylor, though another Boston resident is also worth mentioning -- Jaki Byard, who could move from barrelhouse to crepuscular romanticism and dense chordal superimpositions at the drop of a hat. If he and Ertunç didn't necessarily work together, their spirits are kindred." --Clifford Allen

Recorded and mixed by Matt Bordin in the woods at (the new) Outside Inside Studio, the album features a range of approaches to percussion that Zerang has developed over the years, including the use of vibrating drumhead surfaces, expressive friction passages, multiple timbre percussion, and straight-up trap-set drumming -- all infused with a rich sense of melodic, rhythmic and textural innovation. Zerang has performed and recorded with some of the most adventurous artists of his era, including a fourteen-year stint with The Peter Brotzmann Chicago Tentet, Joe McPhee's Survival Unit III, and an extended collaboration with drummer and percussionist Hamid Drake. Frequent collaborators also include cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm, pianist and synthesist Jim Baker, bassist Kent Kessler, trumpeter Axel Dorner, along with an ever-widening pool of international improvisors. He also recently began performing with the experimental Middle-Eastern super group Karkhana, with Mazen Kerbaj, Sharif Sehnaoui, Maurice Louca, Tony Elieh, Sam Shalabi, and Umut Ça?lar. Edition of 300.

MALONE, KALI The Sacrificial Code 2LP
Double LP version. Kali Malone presents a new album featuring nearly two hours of concentrated pipe organ pieces governed by a strict acoustic and compositional code. It's a major new work with ultimately profound emotional resonance. The Sacrificial Code takes a more surgical approach to the methods first explored on Organ Dirges 2016-2017 (ASCETICKALI). Over the course of three parts performed on three different organs, Malone's minimalist procedure captures a jarring precision of closeness, both on the level of the materiality of the sounds and on the level of composition. The recordings of The Sacrificial Code involve careful close-miking of the pipe organ in such a way as to eliminate environmental identifiers as far as possible -- essentially removing the large hall reverb so inextricably linked to the instrument. The pieces are then further compositionally stripped of gestural adornments and spontaneous expressive impulse -- an approach reminiscent of Steve Reich's words, "by voluntarily giving up the freedom to do whatever momentarily comes to mind, we are, as a result, free of all that momentarily comes to mind." With its slow, purified, and seemingly austere qualities, The Sacrificial Code guides you through an almost trance-inducing process where you become vulnerable receptors for every slight movement, where every miniature shift in sound becomes magnified through stillness. As such, it's a uniquely satisfying exercise in transcendence through self-restraint -- a stunning realization of ideas borne out of academic and conceptual rigor which gradually reveals startling personal dimensions. It has a perception-altering quality that encourages self-exploration free of signposts and without a preordained endpoint -- the antithesis to the language of colorless musical platitudes we've become so accustomed to. Features additional organ pieces performed by Ellen Arkbro. Art and photography by A.M. Rehm. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker.

LETKIEWICZ, JASON The Reflecting Pool LP
Jason Letkiewicz has released material under a dizzying array of aliases, each utilized to explore a different side of his multi-faceted musical persona. Now, some 14 years after he made his recording debut alongside Ari Goldman as Manhunter, Letkiewicz has joined forces with Into The Light Records to release his first album under his real name. The Reflecting Pool sees Letkiewicz exploring the uncomplicated and uncluttered in the pursuit of pure aural beauty. While his recent album as Opposing Currents was dense, dark, urban, and industrial, The Reflecting Pool is stripped back, quiet, and melodious. The contrast between the two projects is marked, with The Reflecting Pool drawing more on Letkiewicz's love of crystalline ambient, slow burn synthesizer soundscapes, early '80s library music and the kind of obscure electronic new age music that has been a hallmark of Into The Light's releases to date. The set's 12 tracks gently ebb and flow, with Letkiewicz making great use of dusty old drum machines, effects units and a range of vintage analogue and digital synthesizers. It's a set-up that results in a range of complimentary mood pieces and interludes, from the delay-laden military drums and lilting lead lines of "Out of Body Experiences", to the drowsy, sunrise bliss of "Sunspot", the bubbling Tangerine Dream style shuffle of "Mind Awake Body Asleep" and the outer-space atmosphere of "The Kill Fee". Throughout, Letkiewicz showcases his seemingly intrinsic grasp of mood, atmosphere, and melody. It can be heard within the glacial guitar motifs, occasional beats and elongated chords of "The Reflecting Pool", the rhythmic bustle of "Numb Drums", the glassy-eyed melancholia of "Arhythmia", and the cinematic paranoia of "Burning Off The Morning Fog". It's also evident amongst the classically beat-less ambient of closing cut "Weightless", whose alien electronics, effects-laden pulses and opaque chords recall established masters of the genre. With The Reflecting Pool, Letkiewicz has provided a much-needed dose of stress-free musical escapism, at the same time offering hope that in these troubling times, love may still save the day.

PAZAZZ So Hard To Find/The Right One (Kenny Dope Remixes) 7"
"Miami, Florida disco-funk outfit Pazazz had their beginnings when guitarist/vocalist Tony Castellanos joined with bassist/vocalist Tim Boynton to form the Zanzibar band, which regularly gigged at the Bahia Cabana Hotel in Ft. Laderdale, as well as private parties and clubs around the immediate area. Later joined by drummer/vocalist Rick Gritz to make up the core of the band, the then Zanzibar band performed a hard-hitting blend of disco-funk, which also took cues from the elegant and soulful arrangements of Bill Withers and Steely Dan. By the late 70s, Castellanos had bigger things in mind than merely performing around the coastal Florida area, when he changed the Zanzibar band's name to Pazazz, and began to pen original singles while working for the Norwegian Cruise Line. The result was the smooth, Commodores-esque track 'So Hard To Find', with 'The Right One' as its B-side, and would be pressed on two separate runs bearing differently colored labels, neither of which satisfied Castellanos, who considered both to be flawed. Copies of the single were gifted to fans during gigs, until Pazazz's disbanding in 1981. Decades later, Kay-Dee Records is proud to present this reissue of Pazazz's rare single featuring extra funky, DJ friendly remixes of 'So Hard To Find' and 'The Right One', courtesy of Kenny Dope himself."

APARDE Hands Rest LP
LP version. Art has the power to mirror and capture its creator's surroundings and environment. Art can also reflect something much more personal by offering you a glimpse of the artist's mind. Hands Rest, the second studio album by German composer and musician Aparde, does both. While reflecting the essence of Berlin's club scene, in which Aparde undoubtedly is immersed in, the album also takes you to the depths of the musician himself, far from clubs and live sets, to a world that is both intimate and profound. Hands Rest, which was created over the span of one year, has a cathartic feel to it, "the process was very diffused in terms of time, because over the past year my life circumstances have been very complicated and often frustrating, and I had to motivate myself again and again." While he crafted the tracks, Aparde was in fact processing his own thoughts and feelings after the end of a long relationship, and listeners navigate through varying soundscapes that seem to accompany Aparde's own internal commotions as he himself navigated a turbulent year. But while pain, anger and melancholy can be felt in tracks, Hands Rest also contains moments of transcendental insight and "breakthroughs" that evoke comfort and acceptance. There is undoubtedly a lot of Aparde in the album, not only through what he hand-crafts on his analog equipment, but also through his own voice. Aparde's lyrics also expose a fragility that complements the harder electronic elements. In fact, it is the use of his voice in Hands Rest, in hushed and soft tones, that balances some of the more dance tracks with mellow and deeply intimate undertones, showing the progression of the artist from a club musician to something that lies beyond that environment too. The second half of the album certainly feels more thumping than the first, with repetitive beats of a faster tempo, but the choice of equipment accompanied by Aparde's voice warms up what could otherwise feel impersonal.

HOLT, JOHN 3000 Volts Of Holt LP
LP version. Kingston Sounds present a reissue of John Holt's 3000 Volts Of Holt, originally released in 1977. The 3000 Volts Of Holt album was the third in a series of records that launched John Holt into the UK charts in the 1970s. To say that every home had a copy of a 1000 Volts (1973) and many 2000 Volts Of Holt (1976) might be an overstatement, but it certainly felt that way, as all good radio stations and parties seemed to have these tracks on permanent rotation. 3000 Volts Of Holt was the more roots sounding of the three albums, but it still carried that sweetened string sound that set these recordings together. 3000 Volts also featured the first recordings that Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare played on together. Kingston Sounds get this version back out on the streets where it belongs, especially on vinyl so those new reggae blues parties can again spin some fine vintage John Holt magic... Barely room for breath, most of the tracks snapping off with little ceremony, apart from on the "Under The Sun" which drags that grimy noise out into a grubby itchy monster three times the length of most of the other tracks on the album, and on the apocalyptic stomp of the closer "Solution Absolute".

OCHRE A Midsummer Nice Dream (15th Anniversary Edition) 2LP
Lapsus Records presents the third release in its Perennial series, dedicated to reissuing contemporary electronica classics from established artists. The third release is from Christopher Scott Leary, who over the last two decades has produced a plethora of material under his pseudonym, Ochre. 2019 marks 15 years since the original release of A Midsummer Nice Dream in 2004; on British label Toytronic, which pushed Leary to the forefront of the experimental electronic music sphere. This special deluxe reissue, entitled A Midsummer Nice Dream (15th Anniversary Edition) features unreleased material from the same period and includes three bonus tracks. It therefore offers a golden opportunity to rediscover an album that navigates through several genre domains such as ambient, IDM, and experimental electronica in its purest form, stylistically reminiscent of the likes of Autechre, whilst conveying a sound considerably ahead of its time. In its entirety A Midsummer Nice Dream is undoubtedly one of the most remarkable electronica glitch albums to be released in the 2000s, when the genre experienced its zenith, largely thanks to the advent of significant breakthroughs in digital production tools. Re-mastered by John McCaig (panicStudios). Includes a full-color print of the new artwork, re-designed by Portland (Oregon) illustrator Nathaniel Reeves. DJ YODA Home Cooking LP
LP version. "A soul and jazz spreading of wings, with the help of scene headliners Nubya Garcia, Omar, Joel Culpepper, Jungle Brothers and Edo. G. Home Cooking is the new, mature sound of DJ Yoda. Maximizing the experience and enjoyment gained from recording live instruments and prioritizing songs over beats for his previous two albums Breakfast of Champions and Chop Suey, this is a big step for the cut-and-paster as a producer, having wowed the world over for over two decades with his celebrated turntable tomfoolery. Recorded between his own studio and the world-famous Abbey Road, Home Cooking keeps one foot in the hip-hop old school with collaborations with the returning Jungle Brothers (the party-starting 'Afrika') and Boston bastion Edo. G (a peaceful route from London to 'Roxbury'), and spreads to a melodic vibe scoring chilled Sunday mornings. 'I titled this one Home Cooking because the music is so close to my heart, in terms of what I grew up on, and what really speaks to me on a personal level'. Imbued with the spirit of Guru's 'Jazzmatazz', the output of Acid Jazz and 90s vitals from the Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul, Yoda admits that it's a happy accident that, whilst drawing on jazzy, soulful hip-hop from 25 years ago, the sound of Home Cooking is very much of-the-moment."

Great melting pot of styles and tunes, D.I.Y. Funk Soul Jazz. Recommended if you're into Khruangbin. Skinshape is the project of British musician William Dorey. The sound has roots in many genres but in particular 1960s-70s funk, soul, reggae, psychedelic rock, Afrobeat and folk. Skinshape grew out of a love for old music and the way it sounded. Initially Dorey experimented with samples (especially drum breaks) to create instrumental hip-hop/trip-hop tracks but then later started to play around with tape machines as a means to create his own 'samples'. This process gave birth to Skinshape with all elements being recorded by Dorey since the first self-titled album released in 2014. PAULOR Spaceship EP 2x12"
Life And Death looks to Mexican artist Paulor for a new EP that includes two of the fast-rising artist's journeying originals, plus big remixes from dance luminaries JD Twitch, Vitalic, Superpitcher, and Fango. Paulor is an associate of The Pachanga Boys' You And Your Hippie Friends label and resident DJ at Mexico's celebrated Topaz Deluxe club in Monterrey. Sunshine, synth craft, and dramatic guitar licks characterize his deep-cut motorik grooves on the likes of Kompakt and DGTL, and he shows those skills off once more here. Opener "Spaceship" is an expansive track with a pixelated lead that takes you on a trip through the cosmos as heavenly pads add a subtle sense of uplifting euphoria and surely get the club under their spell. The superb "Planet Gold" is slower and more mysterious, with drums that are just as inviting and well set, but an eco-system of pads that shimmer and shine in the night sky above and lock you in a dream state. A wandering bassline finishes the whole thing in fantastic fashion. French techno legend Vitalic does his thing on the "Spaceship" remix, layering in more rugged and angular synths and a flabby bassline that results in absolute lift off. Fango is another fast riser who has been tipped for big tings by Michael Mayer and his "The Suppa Robot Dancer Remix" is a raw electro version with slapping hits and brain frying bass that underpins off kilter percussion to body popping effect. Optimo's JD Twitch is one of the most eclectic and widely informed names in the game and his take on the track is unhinged and unpredictable. Metallic percussive hits, intergalactic tension and big drums all coalesce into something both serene yet unusual. Long-time Kompakt affiliate Superpitcher closes things down with two of his trademark remixes: the first is a zoned-out, ten-minute cosmic opus and the second is six escapist minutes of deep space ambience. This is set to be a breakout EP from Paulor, and one that comes with an adventurous set of remixes from some of dance music's most inventive artists.

DIVE REFLEX SERVICE Dive Reflex Service 01 LP
Introducing Dive Reflex Service's debut album on Limbo Tapes -- 12 tracks of deeply enthralling downtempo sketches from one of the most mysterious outfits operating on the fringes of the Bristol underground. Three cassette releases deep, rounding up a seriously respectable roster of talent, the label isn't one to court hype or social media stats. A pure outlet for musical ideas and exploration with no ego -- Limbo Tapes has been flying the flag for the more abstract beats coming out of different corners of Bristol, plus a few friends further afield. With two compilations and one artist cassettes under their belt, the label has made the jump to vinyl in fine style, headed up by Dive Reflex Service who was a contributor to their second compilation. It's hard to pigeonhole Dive Reflex Services sound, which is no doubt why he/she/they have found a home here -- Loosely hip-hop related, heavy with dub-wise production techniques -- thick washes of atmospherics and dense layers of stretched vocal phrases flow between low passed beats and high-end FX. Flecks of eskibeat and dancehall jut through at points, never fully materializing, it's these hints that keep the whole album fresh and very re-listenable. Immediately enjoyable and deeply rewarding upon repeated listening. The album comes housed in a printed sleeve featuring underwater photography from Bristol photographer Chris Lucas whose work has appeared on countless South West albums. Mastered by Lewis at Stardelta.

INDEX Originals Vol. 1 (1967-68) LP
2019 repress. "All of the original compositions from the band's two self-released holy grails of psychedelia (the Black Album and the Red Album, from 1967-68) combined into one collection -- all newly transferred from the original tapes! Most of you have no doubt heard of records that have been touted as 'mind blowing', 'fuzz monsters', or 'lost/undiscovered classics'. The raves rarely turn out to be justified. That's certainly not the case with the music of Index -- if anything, the raves underplay the essence of the band's music, which is seething with cavernous reverb, snaky guitar lines, and downer lyrics. It is fantastically minimalist, starkly atmospheric, and sprinkled with ferocious guitar work. In the mid 1960's, Detroit Michigan was a thriving industrial city. But the great ethnic diversity in the inner city was a brewing powder keg of civil unrest. This, coupled with a disillusioned population struggling to make some sense of a questionable war in the rice paddies of Viet Nam, set an uneasy and troubling tempo for the future. Still, there were pockets of communities in the Detroit area where things were good and economic life was vibrant. The Grosse Pointes were such communities. It was on the outskirts of this political and racially tense era, in those affluent suburbs just outside Detroit, that Index was formed. The music of Index has been lauded by (and bootlegged by) music heads for decades, and with good reason: it is unexpected, atmospheric, and 'home-made' in the best of all possible ways. The band has a druggie sound, with songs full of feedback and fuzzy guitars, hazy guitar riffs and loud pushy rhythms. And in there amongst the echoing canyons of sound you'll find some snotty post-punk attitude wrapped up in all that trippy velvet fuzz. It's a wonderful bleak sound, droning and murky and introspective -- the atonal side of late 1960's rock that would leave the most lasting impression on those who would eventually become punk, post-punk and indie rock... you know, artists like Joy Division or the Fall or Felt to name three out of a thousand. Includes a 4-panel color insert, written by Index drummer Jim Valice, detailing the band's rock and roll adventures, replete with rare photos."

SPAZA Spaza LP
An entirely improvised live album recorded in one take in the inner city of Johannesburg, featuring some of the city's finest experimental musicians, namely Siya Makuzeni (vocals, FX, trombone), Nosisi Ngakane (vocals), Joao Orecchia (synthesizers, electronics), Waldo Alexander (electric violin with FX pedal), Gontse Makene (percussion), and Ariel Zamonsky (upright bass). In the context of this improvised album, the term "spaza" not only refers to the name of the outdoor gallery in Troyeville, Johannesburg where this project was recorded in the autumn of 2015. No way. In South Africa, "spaza" comes heavy with meaning. It could refer to an informal neighborhood store usually attached to someone's house, operating out of a shack or a repurposed shipping container. It has come to signify an entrepreneurship spirit, especially in South Africa's black townships where restrictions to business ownership meant that only a few could attain that privileged societal status of legitimate business owner. But in contemporary South Africa, spazas are also contested territories, given continental migratory patterns that have seen the country attract millions of political migrants against the backdrop of the remaining economic and spatial legacy of apartheid. Spazas have emerged as sites of war, bloodshed, wailing, and despair as financially disempowered South Africans routinely mete out their frustrations on those spaza store owners that they consider "foreigners" and "outsiders". But spaza can mean something else entirely. Perhaps obliquely, there are musical references to be grasped at. Spaza, the term, the recording, and the location, evokes a spirit of musical independence, a looseness, a jam session, a collaboration, a coming together of great minds at the corner to shoot the breeze, or let off a seriously considered prognosis. In this sense, Spaza, the album, is a conceptual coalescence of space, the body politic and an approach to music making. Helmed by the arbiters of spontaneity, Mushroom Hour Half Hour, this loping, expansive recording brings together musicians already adept at creating on the fly and playing in unlikely set-ups with their instruments of choice. Spaza is at once opaque, direct and an unyielding morass of joy melding with pain, furtiveness caressing boldness. This could be the sound of the city turned inside out, ruminating on its troubled history and uncertain future, the sound of celebration and pensiveness. The results, while shaped in the milieu that is Johannesburg, are that of continental astral travel, a sonic reading of the city's dreamscape.

The second instalment of Nachtbraker's new label features four new original tunes from the Nachtbraker kitchen. Expect his signature deep grooves and inventive arrangements with moody synth melodies. E B U Hinge LP
Celebrating otherness, E B U casts a universe of her own both sonically and visually. Defying any one genre, she refers to her distinct sound as "swamp pop". Unnatural sounds and pitches exhale in melodic chants, ominous basslines resound and eerie loops fixate in this macabre ensemble. You are captive in her world. Moments of haunting clarity keep you wondering where she will take you next whilst strange narratives unfold. Her chameleonic visual display is charged with emotion, keeping you suspended in a state of flux as she orbits through the spectrum. Stimulated by human behavior and existence she questions the very nature of being, and invites the audience to explore through her cathartic performance. Her sound captures elements of the radiophonic qualities by electronic pioneers such as Delia Derbyshire, through to unlikely melody and harmony akin to that of Ryuchi Sakamoto or Laurie Anderson. It's an exploration of strange places with a weird and wonderful sphere, sonically capturing the colorful intensity of Alejandro Jodorowsky's Holy Mountain (1973), or perhaps sounding like a much more out-there, much more convincingly extra-terrestrial Space Lady... These are just vague comparisons though... Essentially, her sound is a total world of its own. Hinge, E B U's debut album, is an outer body experience that will conjure up memories you never had before, images you can't quite place but somehow relate to, and a sense of sweet disorientation as you slip into a whirlpool of shape-shifting melody, harmony and frequency.

LOLINA Live In Paris LP
Restocked. Inga Copeland releases her second album under the Lolina moniker, Live In Paris. Originally released via Vimeo, some material on Live In Paris is taken from previous releases, Relaxin' With Lolina (2015) and the Hyperdub compilation Hyperdub 10.3 (2014). Copeland, an Estonian-Russian artist, considers the delicate socio-political atmosphere of Paris in 2015 and 2016, performing the 35-minuute set with a multi-screen projection of a giant monopoly board surrounding her. A "review" from an unknown source: "God, reviews can be LOL. So we'll presume you know your own mind and taste. Let us scrub all metaphor. We'll resist comparison. Today's musical tenor overlooked, we'll refuse to dissect. Moments preferred are muted. We won't highlight respite or forgiveness. There's no considering of geographical fact. AXELROD, DAVID Earth Rot Instrumentals LP
"Comes packaged in a gatefold jacket with a 28-page booklet. Earth Rot is visionary composer/arranger/producer David Axelrod's third album, and the last of his Capitol trilogy. Recorded as a concept album about the decrepit state of the environment in 1970 Los Angeles, and scheduled for release on the first Earth Day, it marks a departure for Axelrod's signature sound, which would take on a jazzier feel in the 1970s. The instrumental version of Earth Rot was first issued by Now-Again, overseen by the label's Eothen Alapatt in conjunction with Axelrod's estate as a limited double LP offering. The instrumentals are now available for the first time ever as a stand-alone LP. The master was approved by Axelrod's son Michael, who adapted ancient lyrics for the album in one of three collaborative projects he did with his father. Contains a 28-page booklet that delves into Axelrod's incredible life and music, replete with never before published photos and an interview. 'There are very few people who see the Grand Picture of the Universe and understand the Nothingness that it all comes from. There are even fewer who can express these ideas through music -- David could do it all.' --T-Ray"

BACKWORDS Tre LP
2016 release. Tre, the third release from Italy's Backwords, is an intimate, muscle-and-sinew-deep exploration of the mysterious meeting point of man and machine -- here, Pardo and vintage synths, drum machines, and miscellany from the second half of the last century. Twitchy beats, crackling textures and layers of tape distortion conjure a hallucinogenic universe that owes as much to heavy dub as it does to the techno-futurist optimism of the early modular synth pioneers. Recorded over a period of two years, Tre is the result of an intimate process that is strongly connected to an image of a bigger body, a complex sound ecosystem, where analog debris take shape through subtraction and precise layering. "Below/Above" and "Arpoon" begin with one "movimento" before slipping into another, approaching different time/space perceptions and juxtaposition of timbres and sounds with playful experimentation. The woozy looped basslines, distorted vocals and overstretched strings of "Wait!" suggest, in fleeting glimpses, the shadowy figure from whom all of these sounds flow. "Pas de Chance" clashes old samples against new granular synthesis and sequenced acid bass trying to find a meeting point between alien elements. "Tanzania" is a first take improvisation, simple and wild, in which static fuzz, sandpaper hisses and percussive clangs are cloaked in analogue warmth from a 1970s Amek BCII mixer and a Moog Prodigy. Includes download code."... heavily influenced by the full spectrum of current dance music, something clearly audible in the rattling, percussion-heavy beat tracks that make up much of Backwords' first album proper, Tre" --Rory Gibb, The Wire

VORONOI Vis-Viva LP
"Vis-Viva" is the surprise of movement, the wonder that leads to imagine new possible configurations of the present, objects created with materials not yet invented move in aseptic and virtual spaces without respecting the normal laws of physics. Used for the first description of kinetic energy in elastic collisions the historical term "Vis-Viva" titles second OOH-Sounds release from Voronoi, a work inspired by post humanism literature, experimental observation, and speculative evolutionism where sounds and motion seem to face over the contemporary techno-scientific corpus from a positive angle. Can sounds behave like particles do? How sound reacts and transforms if treated like organic matter? Voronoi tries to answer back by sculpting a precise and complex sound design in an anti-climax approach to composition. Rhythms are free, unpredictable, tracks always seem to respect some grammars of club-music but abstracting from its normal timbres and denying its conclusions to face a digital fantasy. Vis-Viva's experiment is completed by an extended six minutes re-work track by electronic music producer and multidisciplinary artist Jesse Osborne-Lanthier who reassembles Voronoi's sonic palette into his unique style. The result is as if everything has traveled outside the lab to be exposed to the outside world. The suspended atmospheres of "T-1000" set the Vis-Viva experiment with pulverized granular sound debris, occasional rhythmic pulses, and reverberant movements. Built over two distinct parts, in which the second seems to deny the first, "SPHERO 2.0" forces a dynamic dialogue between raw and ultra-processed sonic material. Elements orbit around a fast and joyous drum pattern that builds up in "Marbles", a more complex experiment in which particles slow down and accelerate in chaotic, though controlled, collisions to generate micro melodic bursts. B-side opens with innovative artist Jesse Osborne-Lanthier who re-works Vis-Viva's raw recordings in an apparent disassembled hierarchy, layering the original sonic elements over an amazingly sounding, erratic texture made out of what sounds like hyper-processed field recordings. "Gumbody Flash" closes with the slower, uncanny precision of an out-of-battery mechanism, whose degree of freedom decreases as its elastic repetitions get looser and contradictory. Mini-LP of five, four-minute tracks."Three-dimensional sound collage goes haywire on this mind-melting remix from Jesse Osborne-Lanthier, which builds up to a climax that sounds like a robot trying to destroy itself." --Andrew Ryce, Resident Advisor

GEORGIA/BELLOWS Decouple ][ Series LP
The first in a series of six split records concerning dependencies, miscommunication and increasing complexity in our media-saturated digital era. Georgia and Bellows inaugurate the Decouple ][ Series with works between futuristic eclecticism and avant-garde pan-aesthetics, where musical themes flow tangentially. Similar, but without effectively engaging one another. A metaphor for a world of surfaces. Recorded in Georgia's Chinatown NYC studio, "Tiwala Sa Bhuay", featuring Gabi Asfour, abruptly throw us into freaky percussion clusters constructed from heavily processed sounds which seem to keep in balance just by the magic of repetitions. Justin Tripp and Brian Close's stylistic fusion acts like an antidote against GPS localization, with sounds and voices more reminiscent of data flowing through a proxy server than an acoustic performance -- a myriad of tiny elements resonates with the multi-cultural a-geographic perception of a contemporary metropolis. "A Habitual Sway" (an anagram of the first title) flows more slowly, mixing hypnotic rhythmic percussions loops, melodic sketches, and controlled distortions into sophisticated layers. Naïve digital strings pads incursions widen the picture further. Georgia run an NTS monthly residency of oddball electronics. Digging into their sound archive, Bellows build an immersive Konrad-esque 19 minutes of humid and winding electronics with "Untitled". Drawing on years of improvising experience, Nicola Ratti and Giuseppe Ielasi take a puristic avant-garde approach, using tape loops, static, modular synths and field recordings. A subtle nostalgia pervades the whole work - the music sneaks through lush, decadent dystopian visions like in a travelogue. Mallets, statics, cut-up white noise, synthetic kicks, and uncannily pitched voices branch out like roots, while digital birds whistle all around in an aquatic atmosphere, perhaps suggesting an ironic take on "Orientalism". CORNISH/SIM HUTCHINS, DALE Decouple ][ Series LP
Second release for the Decouple ][ Series, a project that aims to showcase artists working, in their own ways, at the bold fringes of electronic composition, experimenting around the topics of increasing complexity, dependencies and miscommunication in a media-saturated digital era. British producers Dale Cornish and Sim Hutchins join the project, the former playing with an anti-sober, almost eccentric euphoria, the latter with nostalgic and slightly eerie ambient feel. The thinness of reality is made of transparent things and refractions -- external and internal points of view of the same subject. Croydon's prodigy Dale Cornish joyously plays here with a terse, oblique, abstract, almost candid, almost brutal TR- 909's 'floor friendly pattern. Not immune to unpredictable subtle fractures, the witty nine minutes of percussive repetition stretches out beyond its physical form, hinting at moments of climax but never overwhelming its voyeuristic nature. Saturated handclaps and hi-hat pan-pots widen top-end frequencies while classic 909 claves incursions, cowbells, and tambourines counterpoint. What sounds like a recording of Dale's own voice lasciviously recurs so to become the track's title itself -- "California"! Playfully pointillist explorations, pulse, and percussive deconstructed gestures place this track into the elusive territory between dancefloor and experimental. "The product of a bleak winter night, cold fingers gripped tightly on restraint/release controls. Red wine sipped from a mug in lieu of adequate central heating. Stifled sense of euphoria inferred by subtle melodies not brave enough to visibly cross frozen pads, instead opting to lurk in the chill of closed hats and hollow bandpasses. Though unable to procure the resources required to stoke the internal flames of creative thought, I powered through instead and struck tipsily at chords, and at the red-skied February dawn 'Druk Pak' was the end result". No better words than Sim Hutchins' own to describe a tune of potential somnambulism, obscure awareness, and future nostalgia for the present-day. Another time his vision, sounds and impulses set markers of contemporaneity. All cover pictures for the Decouple ][ Series are taken from Alice Bonfanti's Transparent Things (1997), courtesy of the artist. Includes download code. Mini-LP split of ten-minute sides.

MORGAN, NATE Journey Into Nigritia LP
Outernational Sounds present the first legitimate vinyl reissue of Nate Morgan's Journey Into Nigritia, originally release in 1983. A major statement from a crucial figure on the Los Angeles jazz underground -- Journey Into Nigritia is pianist Nate Morgan's spiritualized deep jazz classic. How many 16-year-olds would have the confidence to walk up to a revered bandleader at a gig, and inform him that one day they'd be playing together? As improbable as it sounds, this is how pianist Nate Morgan introduced himself to the great Horace Tapscott, founder of the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra. The teenage Morgan had heard Tapscott's Flying Dutchman LP The Giant Is Awakened (1969) being played by Greg Kufahamu on local Los Angeles radio station KUSC, and Arthur Blythe's wailing sax had gone straight to the heart. Morgan showed up to all the Arkestra shows he could find. He was already studying with Joe Sample and Hampton Hawes and playing in local bands, but the draw of the Tapscott's band was too much for the gifted young pianist: "I could only take about two or three more concerts before I had to run up on stage. When I first introduced myself to Horace, he tells everybody that I said, 'Yeah, I'm Nate Morgan. I'm going to play with you all.' Not that I want to, but that I'm going to." Over the next decade and beyond, Morgan would become a central figure in Tapscott's UGMAA (Union Of God's Musicians and Artists Ascension), bringing new figures into the fold (like Jesse Sharps), running jam sessions, and eventually being given the task of organizing the Arkestra songbook. During the early 1970s he also worked commercially, doing a stint with Rufus and Chaka Khan and appearing on Willie Hutch's Foxy Brown soundtrack (1974). Into the 1980s and 1990s he remained active, keeping the UGMAA flame alive and working tirelessly around LA, including collaborations with Bone Thugs N' Harmony; he was also part of the early 2000s LA jazz collective Build An Ark. A true musician's musician, Morgan died in 2013. Journey Into Nigritia, featuring fire-breathing reedsman Dadisi Komolafe, was the first of two LPs Morgan recorded for Tom Albach's storied Nimbus West imprint. A committed, spiritualized work that showcases Morgan's heavy composing as well as his McCoy Tyner-influenced and technically flawless playing, Journey features dedications to Coltrane ("He Left Us A Song") and Cecil Taylor ("Study In C.T."). Surging, modal jazz from the LA underground, Journey Into Nigritia is a crucial recording by an unsung jazz legend. Fully licensed from Nimbus West founder Tom Albach.

CLOUD ONE Spaced Out: The Very Best of Cloud One 2CD
"Produced by the legendary Patrick Adams, the studio-bound disco unit Cloud One made its debut in 1975 with the spectacular Atmosphere Strut. At a time when most music was recorded with a full army of studio musicians, Cloud One records were mostly played, arranged and mixed in their entirety by Patrick Adams himself! The ability to 'work on his own' allowed the music to feel more experimental than the work he did on major labels at the time. While there's been other compilations, this is the first official P&P collection dedicated to the work of Patrick Adams as Cloud One. Spaced Out compiles the best of Cloud One's output with songs from their Atmosphere Strut LP, their Funky Disco Tracks EP and a number of known 12" singles, as well as some hard-to-find titles like 'Patti Duke', 'Don't Let My Rainbow Pass Me By', and 'Flying High'. FLOR DE TOLOACHE Mariachi Flor De Toloache LP
Flor de Toloache and Peace & Rhythm have teamed up again, this time to reissue -- for the first time ever on vinyl -- the band's auspicious debut, the 2015 Latin Grammy Nominated album, Mariachi Flor De Toloache. The record showcases deep and melodic mastery of instruments and vocals as well as a generational understanding of traditional mariachi, successfully passed down from vocalist/violinist Mireya Ramos's mariachi musician father Armando and an extensive river of influences from her music loving mother Carmen. This is all interwoven with the modern R&B/soul influences of Shae Fiol (vocals, vihuela, guitar), whose songwriting shines as she translates her tracks into the rustic and folky ambiance of mariachi. Beautiful original arrangements give wings to trumpeters Julie Acosta, Jackie Coleman, and Anna García, who combine with Domenica Fossatti's dazzling flute work to achieve unparalleled orchestral heights in the all-important brass section. The classic Mariachi violin sound comes courtesy of Luisa Bastidas and Eva Lou Vossmerbäumer who are joined by Verónoca Medellín on guitarrón, Lila Downs band member George Saenz on trombone, and members of NYC's Banda de los Muertos. The material is refreshingly unique and yet rooted in tradition as well, and ranges across styles, regions and influences, from huapango to son, cumbia to salsa, bachata to bolero, Afro-Cuban to blues. There is also a touch of country/Americana, jazz, and American popular song added to round things out. Mastered vinyl version created by Pete Maher and pressed by Burlington Record Plant.

ATKINSON, FELICIA The Flower And The Vessel 2LP
Double LP version. Printed artwork on inner and outer reverse-board jackets. French poet and ASMR auteur Félicia Atkinson has frequently fixated on the elusive interwoven relationship between microcosms and macrocosms -- how even the quietest creative act ripples outward, a whisper with no fixed meaning. The Flower And The Vessel pursues this notion in a more literal fashion, as it was crafted while pregnant on tour. She describes it as "a record not about being pregnant but a record made with pregnancy." Each day and night, finding herself far from home, she asked herself "What am I doing here? How can I connect myself to the world?" The answer gradually revealed itself: "With small gestures: recording my voice, recording birds, a simple melody." In truth there is nothing simple about The Flower And The Vessel. The album's 11 songs span whispering textures, opaque moods, and surreal spoken word, leading the listener through a mirrored hall of beguiling mirages. Atkinson cites a trio of French classical compositions from her childhood as formative influences: Ravel's L'enfant Et Les Sortilèges, Debussy's La Mer, and Satie's Gymnopédies. There's certainly a shade of classicism woven within these tracks; melancholic piano motifs repeat then retreat into a radiant frost of shivering frequencies; processed voices recite cut-up poems and interviews over delay-refracted Rhodes and Wurlitzer; iPad gamelan patterns flutter from meditative to melancholic and back again, offset by pointillist patches of delicate software synesthesia. Much of Atkinson's discography is shaped by speech and the lyricism of language, but The Flower And The Vessel ventures further into silence. Field recordings from Tasmania and the Mojave Desert murmur beneath hushed reverberations of gong, vibraphone, and marimba, softly processed into an elegant emptiness, alternately eerie and serene. Her mode of minimalism has long been one of reduction, riddles, and curation, but here Atkinson's synergy feels close to apotheosis, emotive but ambivalent, a ceremony of expectation and invisible forces. The 19-minute closing collaboration with SUNN O))) guitarist Stephen O'Malley, "Des Pierres," is one of the album's few pieces tracked in a proper studio, but it broods and burns with the same subliminal majesty as the rest of The Flower And The Vessel: an ember in amber, seeds planted in shifting sands. Original artwork by Julien Carreyn, mastered by Rashad Becker at Dubplates and Mastering.

VA Speaking And Listening Book
Speaking And Listening is a book conceived by the artists Yann Sérandour, Félicia Atkinson, Julien Bismuth, and the curator Sophie Kaplan, revolving around questions of narrative, listening and improvisation. It is the last episode in the cycle While I was also listening [...], developed in 2017 and 2018 at La Criée contemporary art center in Rennes, which included in-house and off-site events in the form of exhibitions, events, and residencies. At the art center, five group and solo exhibitions with their associated events succeeded and dialogued with one another, providing both specific and general perspectives onto different forms of narration. The cycle was accompanied by an extra muros program that unfolded at different times and in different locations: concomitant residencies in Bretagne and the US, a project of research/action at the Kandinsky Library of the Musée national d'art Moderne in Paris, a period of research at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles, and a series of events in Los Angeles and New York (Human Resources, County Museum of Art, Hammer Museum Los Angeles, Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, Artist's Institute and Emily Harvey Foundation, New York). In the continuum of these experiences, the book has been designed to be a distinct voice, generating new contents appropriate to the medium. The book is centered around a long unpublished transcript of a talk poem by the American poet and performance artist David Antin, entitled framing and being framed. Adding to the corpus of Antin's works, this typically autobiographical text reveals Antin's eloquent use of quotidian events to philosophical ends. The contributions that respond to Antin's text are themselves innovative, composed by poets, thinkers and artists from different generations and nationalities, linked by their common interest in investigating questions of orality, listening, narrative, transmission, improvisation, translation, utterance and enunciation. speaking and listening thus defines the contours of a transatlantic and intergenerational scene, for whom the work of art -- in dialogue with its viewers, readers, and listeners -- is an object to be redefined, retold and replayed again and again. Features: David Antin, François J. Bonnet, David Horvitz, Julien Bismuth, Yann Sérandour, Hanne Lippard, Christian Xatrec, Félicia Atkinson, Christine Sun Kim, Charles Bernstein, and Sophie Kaplan. 240 pp. thread-sewn softcover with flaps; Size: 170x227mm; Language(s): English.

OBJECT COLLECTION You Are Under Our Space Control LP
Following their acclaimed opera-in-suspension about Fugazi, NYC's Object Collection imagine a delirium of transhuman thought and progressive politics on their return to the inimitable Slip label. You Are Under Our Space Control sees the duo of Kara Feely (text) and Travis Just (music) refocus their "operatic" sensibilities into a typically confounding "space-opera" that somehow ties up references as wide reaching as John Cage's piano solo Music Of Changes (1951), with Cy Roth's sci-fi Fire Maidens From Outer Space from the same year, as well as texts inspired by Sun Ra and the Russian Cosmists' poetics and philosophies, and interviews from real (and imagined) space travelers and astronomers. Aye, it's a proper headful of ideas, and understandably chaotic with it, but OC makes a virtue of somehow maintaining a coherence though their sharply chopped arrangements, which start out tightly puckered, but gradually loosen up into sprawling, psychedelic designs as the album proceeds. What happens in its 18 parts is comparable to a sort of home-brewed sci-fi soundtrack imagined by a teenaged dream-team of Todd Dockstader, Bruce Haack, and Sonny Blount; a sound full of mercurial wormholes, with an animist capacity to rouse arcane spirits, and a magnetic pull to the most restlessly searching listeners of the weird and wonderful. Most crucially, for an album rooted in '50s sci-fi and avant-garde, the results prize that era's modernist promise without coming off as retrogressive or corny.

BAROQUE JAZZ TRIO Baroque Jazz Trio LP
Souffle Continu Records present a reissue of Baroque Jazz Trio's self-titled album, original released on Saravah in 1970. Mixing Baroque, free-jazz, and world music, the unique album of the Baroque Jazz Trio (which is in fact 3/5 of the Bach Modern Quintet) is a difficult-to-label sound object which is far from being typical of the psychedelic sounds associated with the early 1970s. Because, although fusion with Indian music (amongst others) and jazz (but also pop) was popular at the time, rarely had all this been mixed together with Baroque music. Even mentioning Jacques Loussier adapting Bach does not come close, as here, all barriers are broken down, with an audacity which begins with the highly original and extraordinary use of the harpsichord, an instrument which it is unusual to hear in such a context, even though indicated by the "baroque" in the title. Of course, jazz specialists will mention Johnny Guarnieri in the Gramercy Five with Artie Shaw, Martial Solal playing "Four Brothers" in 1965, or Lalo Schifrin in his homage to the Marquis de Sade? But no, none of these references really makes sense, as they pale in comparison to the wild adventures of Georges Rabol, probably closer to Call Cobbs with Albert Ayler, or, better still, Odile Bailleux in another remarkable French group, Armonicord, than anyone else. With George, the rhythm section is no less outstanding: Jean-Charles Capon, who, two years later would record the magnificent L'Univers-Solitude (FFL 046LP) on the same label, is a flying cello virtuoso, while Philippe Combelle, a great drummer rarely heard in such experimental circumstances, plays daringly mixed percussion. Also noteworthy is the presence of flutist, Michel Roques on one track, who was also behind a Saravah album, the splendid Chorus (FFL 048LP). In France, whether or not groups like Moravagine, Confluence, or Synchro Rhythmic Eclectic Language, working in similarly unusual areas, are taken into account, it is rare to find a group which, like the Baroque Jazz Trio, have been able to so blur the boundaries, especially by adding an exotic breath of fresh air inherited from the Third Stream. This record, alongside the album by Brigitte Fontaine with the Art Ensemble of Chicago made Pierre Barouh stand out as a pioneering producer and destroyer of stylistic frontiers. Remastered audio. POPP Laya LP
With seemingly effortless precision and a sense for the imperfect, Popp merges ambient, third stream, minimal music on his debut album, Laya. The title derives from the Sanskrit language and signifies a place of rest and mental inactivity. In the spring of 2019 Popp created these eight tracks from hours of improvisation in his own studio. The moments thus captured were then enriched with more sounds and effects to add layers and shed the manually played percussion of all its earthliness. The result is an album of concealed complexity and unadorned beauty. Raised on an old farm in rural Bavaria, Simon Popp started playing the drums at the age of nine. During his studies at the Academy of Music and Theatre in Munich, he extensively studied African music from countries like Togo, Ghana, and Benin where rhythm is central to culture. On his quest for this world's sounds, Popp collected and recorded a wide variety of drums and other instruments, adding to the placelessness of Laya. 180 gram pressing, includes download.

SABIN, JOSHUA Sutarti LP
On Sutarti, Joshua Sabin draws influence from the compositional structures and psychoacoustic properties that exist within early Lithuanian folk music, exploring the emotional potency of the human voice through the manipulation of elements of archival recordings. Obtaining access to the folk music archives of the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre Ethnomusicology Archive from the outset of this project, Sabin felt a particular resonance with the extensive library of vocal recordings and specifically the song forms of the Sutartin?. Derived from the Lithuanian verb "Sutarti" -- to be "in agreement", "to attune" -- Sutartin?s are a Lithuanian form of Schwebungsdiaphonie, a distinct canonic song style consisting of two or more voices that purposefully clash creating extremely precise dissonances and the phenomena of aural "beating". Inspired by the psychoacoustic research of Rytis Ambrazevi?ius, whose computer analyses reveal the unique acoustic and harmonic complexities in these archival songs, and transfixed by what Sabin describes as their "arresting and often almost plaintive and minimalistic beauty", he sought to compose directly with the recordings them-selves as a raw material. Sutarti exists fundamentally as an emotional "response", presenting archival voices through radical recontextualizations that Sabin hopes simultaneously express both his personal perspective and experience, and also speak universally to the power and versatility of the voice as a communicator of meaning and emotion. Produced with archival recordings, instrumentation including skudu?iai and fiddle, and field recordings of Lithuanian forest ambiences. Joshua Sabin is an Edinburgh based composer and sound designer, who's first LP Terminus Drift was released on Subtext in 2017 (SUB 010CD/020LP).

STEREO TOTAL Ah! Quel Cinema! LP
LP version. Stereo Total -- Ah! Quel Cinéma! An album title with not one, but two exclamation marks, meaning something akin to "what a palaver" as it primes the listener for songs like "Cinemascope". Themes such as personal injuries ("Ich Bin Cool"), betrayal ("Mes Copines"), personality deficiencies brought on by drug abuse ("Methedrine"), rage ("Hass-Satellit"), inflated opinions of oneself ("Brezel Says"), suicide ("Le Spleen"), grief ("Dancing With A Memory"), and souls in torment ("Elektroschocktherapie") are presented in widescreen format in and often in the most entertaining fashion. Stereo Total's penchant for wordplay is not in evidence in all of the lyrics on this record. Many tracks here echo the rather more somber, desperate songs she wrote for her first band Les Lolitas. Nevertheless, the anarchic humor which can be associated with Stereo Total resurfaces on compositions like "Keine Musik" and "Einfach". Musically, this Stereo Total disc, their twelfth, cannot be readily aligned with anything at all. If earlier albums resonated with influences from chanson, trash, or disco to punk, rock'n'roll and NDW (German New Wave), Stereo Total have now arrived in their very own musical universe which pays no heed to stylistic devices, reminiscent of "rien de tout". Brezel Göring draws on his favored array of instruments more likely to be found in the hands of children in households where a musical education is not on the agenda: plastic baby organ and dreadful mouse piano, accompanied by home-made guitars glued together by less than gifted artisans. Stereo Total continue to make electronic music with flea market Casio sounds which fly in the face of what is generally accepted to be electronic music. Each musical instrument could probably be translated into social coordinates and in this sense, the tools of Stereo Total's trade speak an unequivocal language. Stereo Total continue to play lo-fi garage rock music which makes a mockery of all the masculine clichés associated with guitars. When Françoise Cactus plays the drums, the rhythms of feminism, anti-professionalism and subversive dilettantism come to the fore. Any attempts to pigeonhole Stereo Total. The group began making music before the internet existed, before the Euro, before Germany reunited and before there were even bands or music. They will probably still be playing when all that has been consigned to the dustbin of history. When they began making music together, they made it their mission to disrupt rules, to destabilize ideas. They may not have thrown European harmonic structure or 4/4 time out of the window, but they have certainly asked questions of every other aspect of musical and lyrical techniques.

TRASH KIT Horizon LP
LP version. 180 gram vinyl; Edition of 400. Trash Kit are Rachel Aggs (guitar, vocals), Rachel Horwood (drums, vocals), and Gill Partington (bass). Three deeply creative individuals who play in a multitude of other groups including Bas Jan, Sacred Paws, Shopping, and Bamboo. Although Trash Kit have their forebears in bands like Sleater-Kinney, The Ex, and The Raincoats, their sound is still very much their own take on facing forwards and relies as much on the naturalism of an internalized folk music as on their sincerity of vision. For Horizon, carefully crafted through years of playing out live, the band have chased down the distance between what they wanted the record to sound like and its realization. They've augmented these songs with choral arrangements, piano, saxophone, harp, viola, and cello. Horizon finds itself full of themes, especially the notion of looking to the future. "Coasting", which opens the album, is concerned with "the end of the world and also the afterlife" and was written after Aggs read The Parable of the Sower (1993) by the Afro futurist sci-fi writer Octavia Butler, a novel set in an apocalyptic California and featuring a protagonist in search of change and renewal. "Sunset" draws on similar themes of ending and salvation, and proves equally ruminative. "Dislocate" on the other hand is an upbeat sprint of spinning guitar and piano riffs showcasing both Rachels's overlapping vocal magnetism. "Horizon" is a sleeping giant of a title track, forever reaching out and intensifying throughout its lively five-minute lesson in reinforcement. "Every Second" was written in the aftershock of Trash Kit's tour with The Ex on their big convoy anniversary tour. "See Through" sounds pointed and surly, urging you to "transcend, break down" outdated categories and patterns of thought that only restrict. Partington's bassline plummets heavily to hammer this home, making it one of the most affecting songs from the album. Meanwhile "Get Out of Bed" deals with "being an overachiever and the struggle to overcome self-doubt, get motivated, never feeling like you've done enough" Aggs admits. A strong undercurrent throughout Horizon concerns itself with the freeing up of power to make your own definitions, in this case how you can decide what truly makes you feel like you've achieved something.

INCAPACITANTS Extreme Gospel Nights LP
Incapacitants are the best noise band to ever come out of Japan; the group was formed in 1981 in Osaka, the solo project of Toshiji Mikawa, a member of the amazing noise group Hijokaidan. Mikawa, a bank employee who later became manager of one of the largest securities brokers in Japan, later moved to Tokyo, where he joined with government office worker Fumio Kosakai (also an occasional member of Hijokaidan, as well as a former member of C.C.C.C.) to make Incapacitants a duo. Mikawa and Kosakai are no ordinary salarymen, though. They've been making some of the most unremittingly ear-shattering racket for decades as Incapacitants, one of the most significant noise outfits to emerge from the Japanese scene in the early 1980s, and still one of the most radical and powerful. They've consistently been responsible for some of the most complex, chaotic, loud, and downright fun releases in the genre. Extreme Gospel Nights is a shocking cassette from 1993, released by one of the Japanoise-defining labels, Vanilla Records, whose sound is particularly exciting, agonizingly dense and full of detail. "Gospel" refers to the studio where the recordings were made; don't expect traditional spirituals, but rather some truly alien performances, complete with sporadic screaming of vivisected baboons drowning in the sonic sludge. There are two tracks here "Bitter Insect" on and the super lo-fi "Accelerated No(i)sebleed," in all probability recorded directly from the soundboard. Just pure, unadulterated electronic distortion of the highest quality done by two of the masters of all who have ever turned the knob on a distortion pedal. This is fun, terrifying, hypnotic, and fascinating all at the same time; their noise takes root not in violence or gimmickry, but in pure energy. It also serves as great example of just what makes well done noise so great: the layers of complexity that build upon each other reveal new and different textures and patterns on subsequent listens. Mastered by Mikawa and reissued for the first time on vinyl, with black label and black inner sleeve. Edition of 300 in deluxe silver silkscreen on black cardboard sleeve with an image of the Tomyodai lighthouse in the late Meiji era as cover art, insert on classic ultra-bright paper with glossy plastic coating with replica of original. MASONNA Bursting Absolute Moods: The Lost First Album 1989 LP
Cascades of electronic noise, a psychedelic touch, and vocal belching mixed together constitute the ingredients of Mademoiselle Anne Sanglante Ou Notre Nymphomanie Auréolé, the double-barreled name for Masonna. Maso Yamazaki founded his project in 1987, with a charismatic and glamorous personality who become a cult figure in "Japanoise" scene. Predating the era of digital domination, there was a time where artist-run labels putting out primarily, if not exclusively, tapes were legion: Toshiji Mikawa's own Pariah Tapes, Masami Akita's ZSF Produkt, Koji Tano's MSBR Records, Masaya Nakahara's My Fiance's Lifework Productions, Akifumi Nakajima's G.R.O.S.S., Kimihide Kusafuka's Kinky Musik Institute, Hiroshi Hasegawa's Endorphine Factory, Hiroshi Hashimoto's SSSM, and Maso Yamazaki's Coquette are just a few examples from Japan alone. Masonna's abundant productions on his own legendary and astonishing label were presented in very limited edition, sometime totally confidential (one sole copy), and reflect his predilection for '60s psychedelic music revisited in its own very peculiar way. Maso Yamazaki transforms his voice into noise, feeding the microphone back through a process of extreme distortion. His shouts became clipped bursts of overloaded sound, doubled and extended by a delay that displaced the sounds into stuttered blasts of static. These vocal sounds fuse into a rattling background of harsh metallic fuzz, which was created by frantically shaking a highly amplified box filled with coins. Bursting Absolute Moods should have been the 1989 debut LP album on Vis a Vis Audio Arts, the legendary label run by Juntaro Yamanouchi, but it's never been released. All tracks were recorded live, at home, with no mixing and no overdubs. Album is full of very rough harsh noise that's mostly made up of lots of distorted screaming. This early work is very loud, noisy, and has lots of angry energy. The distortion and effects on the vocals are top notch, they in combination with his awesome screaming create a complete audio assault. Divided into two parts of twenty minutes each that focuses an electrically overcharged universe, punctuating the electric and vocal sonorous power with some quite moments and brief interruptions, conferring a very particular dynamic to these tracks. 140 gram vinyl; comes in a deluxe silver silkscreen on black cardboard sleeve; Includes full-color postcard in 300gr, foldable in A4 size and business card with art cover replica of Coquette tape All Live Recording At My Room (1989); Edition of 300.

MAYALL & THE BLUESBREAKERS, JOHN Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton LP
2019 repress. This seminal British blues album gave Clapton the chance to finally show his chops, not surprisingly, launching Clapton into stardom. Recorded in 1966 during Clapton's short stint with the Bluesbreakers, just after leaving the Yardbirds (the birth place of other legendary guitar players like Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck) and before he joined Cream. Includes 4 bonus tracks.

UPERCENT Flor De Lotus EP 12"
Spanish talent Upercent steps up for his first full-length EP on the label. The Flor De Lotus EP is a fusion of organic and analog -- Upercent's productions are always thoughtful and emotive. "Somia" is laden with cosmic synths, hints of the Mediterranean, and a dance-ready beat to boot. The intricate percussion evident in "Somia" carries through in "Pulcre"; another rhythmic piece infused with an enigmatic vocal and a pulsating bass that continues to build throughout. "Flor De Lotus" culminates with a high-energy, late-night remix of "Pulcre" from Romanian DJ/Producer BOg.

PIPELINE 8 Prayer LP
LP version. Another great project conceived by Giancarlo Locatelli and dedicated to the music of Steve Lacy. This time Locatelli presents a full octet line-up featuring some of the best Italian improvisers: Gabriele Mitelli (trumpet), Sebi Tramontana (trombone), Gianmaria Aprile (el. guitar), Luca Tilli (cello) Alberto Braida (piano), Andrea Grossi (bass), and Cristiano Calcagnile (drums). Musicians from different generations and backgrounds -- jazz, classical music, free improv, experimental rock. A great collective piece of work. Liner notes by John Corbett.

LOCATELLI, GIANCARLO NINO Situations LP
LP version. Clarinetist Giancarlo Nino Locatelli can be considered the Italian greatest Steve Lacy expert. Situations is a solo clarinet immersion through the music of the great American soprano sax player. Locatelli catches the essence of Lacy's music through a series of creative renditions of historical compositions such as "Morning Joy", "Blues For Aida", and "Trickles". A very important statement furtherly enhanced by Jason Weiss's liner notes, author of Steve Lacy: Conversations (2006).

GROSSI BLEND 3, ANDREA Lubok LP
LP version. Andrea Grossi is a young and extremely talented double bass player and Blend 3 is his trio, featuring alto sax player Manuel Calliumi and guitarist Michele Bonifati. The group explores the diverse sound aspects of a trio format that, without a preconceived set, utilizes composition and improvisation as its only resources. This is some sort of chamber jazz where each sound controls its own development to remain suspended and constantly communicative. Nonetheless, sudden nervous and electric transgressions sometimes burst abruptly.

MISTER WATER WET Bought The Farm 2LP
Following a golden first streak of releases by uon, Exael, and Pendant in 2018, Huerco S' West Mineral Ltd. returns to mine a rich seam of ambient jazz sampledelia by Mister Water Wet; a Puerto Rican artist with a gift for conveying in-between, gently altered states of mind and the logic of the natural world. Revealing Mister Water Wet's music for the first time beyond his circle of friends, Bought The Farm yields an elementally cool and breezy spirit guided by a first thought/best thought intuition through 55 minutes of crackly, hand-built music riddled with ephemeral soul. In terms of texture and structure, it's a sound maybe best compared with Jan Jelinek at his most frayed and sloppy, or even a pastoral inversion of Kelman Duran's rugged chop 'n' paste arrangements, essentially rendering a distinctive style that hovers between heavy-lidded, Afro-Latinate jazz, sampled indigenous instrumentation, and strains of gently bucolic, ambient introspection. Although based in the USA, Mister Water Wet spends a lot of time with his pops in Puerto Rico, and the subtropical natural world and revolutionary politics of the Caribbean islands osmotically informs Bought The Farm. In ten parts ranging from zoned-out drifts to pockets of sweetly psychedelic delirium, Mister Water Wet uses a patented blend of sampled artefacts and dusty magic to literally and metaphysically connote his conception of a spiritual home, framing a portal from where he can "speak" to Pedro Albizu Campos, a leading figure of the Puerto Rican independence movement, while immersing listeners in his lushly verdant, oasis-like bosques, or naturally sprawling woodlands and iridescent rivulets of sound. Ultimately Bought The Farm is a beautifully modest and intimate expression of self, heard through the prism of the lands and spirits that shaped it. From the aeolian bleeps of "Walking West" to the flutes snagged in the breeze of "Gaduduman Trades," atavistic traces of the natural world and ancient traditions lead into moments of heart-rending dreaminess in the humble centerpiece of burnished drums and dream pop diva called "Dart," before flowing out into oceanic new age with "Cuevas," whereas highlights such as "Drought" feel like Kelman Duran cooking a wood-fired interlude for Boards of Canada, and the heat curdled jazz-fusion of "Gills" gives way to a memorably sublime parting statement in "Sarah Sleeping."

LURKA Let's Stay Together 12"
The title track here is quintessential Lurka, sitting somewhere between hip-hop, dancehall and tech-step, and hitting like a dream collab between Timbaland and Dillinja. It's a unique sound that he first aired back in 2013 with the essential Full Clip/BR Greaze 12" on Hotline Recordings (HOTLINE 002EP). On the flip, you find him working with clubbier beat patterns. "Plenty" revolves around a rich, undulating melody, underpinned by thundering kicks and rolling UK funky snares. "Bodied" marries woody snares and dubby UKG chords with a gnarly jump-up bassline and scratch FX.

JABU Fool If/Wounds (Jay Glass Dubs & SKRS Remixes) 12"
Jabu re-works from the extended family: SKRS and Jay Glass Dubs at the controls. Pressed to 12" with two remixed cuts from Jabu's Sleep Heavy album on Blackest Ever Black (BLACKEST 016CD/LP, 2017). Each approach the originals with their own take on skewed and stretched dubwise styles -- letting the vocals swerve and sway over hypnotic rhythms, off-kilter atmospherics and big belly bassline.

BLACK FLOWER Abyssinia Afterlife LP
For this album debut by Black Flower, the Ethio-jazz project of and around saxophonist Nathan Daems, fans were already waiting since heard the five tracks on their self-titled EP from 2013. For Abyssinia Afterlife, Daems drew inspiration from the legend of Prester John (see also Tommy T's The Prester John Sessions (2009) and be sure to read the crazy story behind the album on Black Flower's website) and that resulted in an album that sounds like a feverish LSD-trip through the streets of the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. But Abyssinia Afterlife exceeds the boundaries of Ethio-jazz: in songs like "Upwards" (featuring Smokey Hormel's splendid guitar playing) or "Again I Lost It", Dengue Fever's psychedelic Cambodian rock is not far away and Wouter Haest keyboard sounds are at times reminiscent of the work of The Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek ("I Threw A Lemon At That Girl", together with "Winter" the only song from the EP also featured on Abyssinia Afterlife). Black Flower only serves up eight songs on Abyssinia Afterlife, but with several compositions lasting more than five minutes, this album will certainly not leave you feeling unfulfilled. Gatefold sleeve.
