SHOTTER, ALLAN Cassini EP 12"
Cassini is Allan Shotter's first solo EP. In such slow epicness begins the ethereal "Intro", like the first ray of sun that has ever climbed over the mountaintops to kiss the valley. As time goes by, you're taken from orbis to urbs, to the timeless here and now, into each individual's minds ("Los"). A fast-paced, clockwork machine music suddenly lights up and becomes highly emotional and nuanced electronica ("Cassini"); oddball jungle noises quiet down and arrange orchestrally, creating a subtle cinematic score ("Akihabara"); the shy ballad turns into a magnificent drama ("British Exit").

GOLDEN FILTER, THE Autonomy LP
London-based Australian-American duo The Golden Filter release their latest full-length album, Autonomy, via their own 4GN3S imprint. Autonomy is a fiercely independent album and serves as a testimony to the united couple's instinctive DIY attitude; for ten years now, everything The Golden Filter has done -- from, producing, mixing, releasing, to shooting videos, and press shots -- is a sovereign endeavor. Here, the duo finds themselves at a point of fearless positivity and an unbreakable creative synchronicity. This is undoubtedly one of their most focused and ambitious releases so far. Born out of their own self-contained studio in Peckham, free from external influence, Penelope and Stephen set about on a mission of self-searching and solipsism drawing influence from their love and unity that sternly defies the damage caused by the ever-growing daily trauma of capitalism and politics. Staunchly feminist and optimistically reflecting on the growing human disconnect from reality, Autonomy pulls subtly from the gloomier sides of British life and culture, The Golden Filter's home now for the last four years. Autonomy mines dark and experimental electronic tones; simultaneously conjuring dystopian synth-scapes, EBM, post-punk, motorik electro, and minimal wave. "Coercion" is a mournful new wave cut that places Penelope's recent brand of "inky dream pop" underpinned by Stephen's pulsating synths as the perfect soundtrack to the rapture. Tracks like "Autonomy" and "Infinity" find The Golden Filter in more familiar territory, thrusting post-punk electronics that straddle the gap between Panorama Bar staples and wayward, thought provoking art-pop. "Electric Light" is an updated homage to old-school sounds of Siouxsie and New Order that take on the duo's message of finding light in the dark and remaining open minded to each other as humans. Album closer "All The Queens" is the most front-facing example of the duo's political inspirations; imagining a new world, reborn under the rule of divine femininity.

RADIGUE, ELIANE Feedback Works 1969-1970 LP
2019 repress. Alga Marghen very proudly presents a remastered version of the complete documentation of Eliane Radigue sound installations from 1969-1970, including the broad tectonic vibrations of "Omnht," the celestial voices of "Usral," the massive chant of "Stress Osaka," and more -- the works of this artist's feedback period finally revealed. It is amazing that Radigue could build such formidably organic sonic edifices in her home studio with the primitive machines given to her by Pierre Henry: three tape recorders, a mixing board, an amplifier, two loudspeakers and a microphone. Eliane previously worked for Henry at the Studio d'Essai of the R.T.F. from 1955 to 1957, after having met Pierre Schaeffer almost by chance, who invited her to learn the techniques of musique concrète. Created 10 years after her Studio d'Essai experience, the feedback works of Eliane Radigue immediately take a new direction from the explorations of musique concrète. Her adventure intuitively goes towards flux, towards contemplative stasis -- a music of continuous sounds, of apparently simple structures, which permits the revelations and expansion of rich acoustic phenomena. It is as if her musical work was in some way a martial art -- as if she meditated for 10 years before striking the first blow, with impressive precision. This is the context in which Eliane composed "Omnht" in 1970 for the architectonic spaces of the visual artist Tania Mouraud titled "One More Night," presented at the Gallery of the Rive Gauche in Paris; "Usral" (the title comes from a phonetic compression of ultrasounds slowed-down, in French "ultra-sons ralentis") is one of the first works by Eliane Radigue to be given in public as a sound environment for a sculpture by Marc Halpern in the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs at the Grand Palais of Paris in 1969; "Stress-Osaka" was conceived when the artist was invited to create a sonic environment for the International Fair in Osaka in 1970. There is no doubt that Eliane Radigue's vocabulary is based on observing and entering into dialog with the fundamental behavior of sounds: pulsing, beating, sustained, very light -- a subtle and delicate evolution. When she moved from feedback sounds to the ARP synthesizer, she naturally continued the same music, a continuity where the original use of feedback sounds stands out for its cruder and more savage inner character. One could say that somehow it's the very texture of the sounds, which leads the form of her compositions. Includes a 16-page LP-size booklet with original photos, scores and liner notes.

RADIGUE, ELIANE Vice-Versa, Etc... LP
2019 repress. Alga Marghen very proudly presents a remastered version of Vice-Versa, Etc..., an LP originally included in the first 400 copies of Eliane Radigue's Feedback Works 2LP. Vice-Versa, Etc... was originally a small handmade box, signed and numbered and released on the occasion of a show at Lara Vincy's gallery in 1970. The box contained a reel of magnetic tape and the instructions for use. It indicates that all playback speeds are possible, forward or backward, as well as any combination of two channels, on several recorders, ad libitum. This LP presents two versions done by Emmanuel Hoelterbach following the indications of Eliane Radigue to the letter, respecting her composition methods. There is no doubt that Eliane Radigue's vocabulary is based on observing and entering into dialog with the fundamental behavior of sounds: pulsing, beating, sustained, very light, a subtle and delicate evolution. When she moved from feedback sounds to the ARP synthesizer, she naturally continued the same music -- a continuity where the original use of feedback sounds stands out for its cruder and more savage inner character. One could say that somehow it's the very texture of the sounds, which leads the form of her compositions. At the same time, this approach favors an intense sensuality in the listening.

VA Sounds of Silence LP
2019 repress. Sounds of Silence is an anthology of some of the most intriguing silent tracks in recording history and includes rare works, among others, by Andy Warhol, John Lennon, Maurice Lemaitre, Sly & The Family Stone, Robert Wyatt, John Denver, Whitehouse, Orbital, Crass, Ciccone Youth, Afrika Bambaataa and of course, Yves Klein. In their own quiet way, these silences speak volumes: they are performative, political, critical, abstract, poetic, cynical, technical, absurd. They can be intended as a memorial or a joke, a special offer, or something entirely undefined. The carefully-chosen silences of this anthology are intrinsically linked to the medium of reproduction itself and reveal its nude materiality. They expose their medium in all its facets and imperfections, including the effect of time and wear. At the most basic level, these silences are surfaces. And it is in their materiality that they distinguish themselves from the conceptual experiments of John Cage with "4'33". Since the 1950s, silence has found a place in the economic structure of the record industry and since then it would increasingly be appropriated by a vast array of artists in a vast array of contexts. Indeed, the silent tracks seem to know no boundaries. The LP presents the silences as they were originally recorded, preserving any imperfection that the hardware conferred upon the enterprise, without banning the possibility of being satisfying to the ear. The liner notes provide historical background for each track, revealing the stated (or presumed) motivations for these silences, while providing novel sound correspondences or interferences. This album is meant to be played loud (or not), at any time, in any place: a true aural experience. Gatefold, iconic sleeve.

CORNER, PHILIP The Judson Years 3CD BOX
It's hard to overstate the importance of Philip Corner. For more than half a century he has been a cornerstone of the American musical avant-garde. Once a student of Otto Leuning, Henry Cowell, Olivier Messiaen, and Dorothy Taubman. A founding member of Fluxus, Corner made waves fast, creating a body of singular work, both on his own and within ensembles like Gamelan Son of Lion and Tone Roads, founded with Malcolm Goldstein and James Tenney, which has cut its way across the decades. Among Corner's most fascinating works are those created between 1962 and 1964, during the period when he was resident composer at the Judson Dance Theatre, one the great occurrences in the emergence of avant-garde dance, movement, Happenings, and performance art. Even today, it stands among the most important examples of collaborate create exchange in the history the American arts. Alga Marghen present a three-CD box, issued in early 2000s by and now out of print, gathering much of the work created during these important years in Corner's career, signed by the composer himself. Alga Marghen's triple box gathers On Tape From the Judson Years, and More from The Judson Years (Early 60s) Instrumental and Vocal Works Volumes 1 and 2, bringing you to heart of Philip Corner's brilliant practice and mind. Across the first disc Corner's tape works -- complex textures and sonority coming to life. The second disc is of an entirely different sort, featuring works created with a great many of Corner's closest collaborators and friends. Recorded at Judson, 1965, the disc features a knock-out cast of Ayo, David Behrman, Philip Corner, Malcolm Goldstein, Dick Higgins, Joe Jones, Alison Knowles, Jackson Mac Low, Charlotte Moorman, Nam June Paik, and Chieko Shiomi, and more. The third disc takes the ear further afield, with "Everything Max Has" (1964), a performance of Max Neuhaus solo recorded at the ONCE Festival (1965), captures the composer and percussionist taking down an overwhelming amount of equipment. It also includes Big Trombone (1963), with Jim Fulkerson improvising over tape collage, "Homage to Revere" (1962) a work for an ensemble of copper-bottom kitchen utensils, and "Punkt" (1961) for an ensemble of staccato sounds, and a number of other astounding works from the era. As a totality, Alga Marghen's three-CD set of Corner's years spent at the Judson Theatre, are a mind-boggling entry into an overwhelmingly exciting moment in time. Edition of 200, signed and numbered.

The tail end of 2018 saw the release of Oberman Knocks' third album on aperture records, Trilate Shift (AP 012LP). 2019 sees the release of Remhex Coyles EP, a standalone set of tracks with a different collective energy. Knocks steps out from the experimental room and heads towards a different kind of space, one that's less claustrophobic and subterranean -- a place that's more structured and in places more melodic than his usual output, but one where he still brings his own distinctive sound. This five-track EP shows an electronic musician in total control of every last detail.

SCHNABEL, ARTUR Artur Schnabel in Performance with Joseph Szigeti & Pierre Fournier 2CD
Live unpublished and newly restored broadcasts. Artur Schnabel lived as a concert pianist, composer, teacher and editor, activities that reveal a complete musician whose genius enlightened chamber music, under-represented in studio sessions. His live duo recital with Joseph Szigeti attests to the heights he achieved in real life, away from the studio atmosphere that he loathed. A legendary Beethoven player whose teacher studied with Beethoven's assistant, Schnabel's Schubert was equally important and three otherwise unrecorded works emerge here with his only known performance of Mendelssohn, recorded at a festival in Edinburgh. Liner notes open a trail of letters discovered inside the basement of Schnabel villa in 2018 in which Szigeti and Schnabel's son engage in an espionage caper to liberate this legendary recital; Excerpts from letters to a mistress indicate Schnabel's reactions to post-War Europe's attempts for normalcy after the fascists had destroyed culture, with scathing accounts of how box-office legends fell miserably below moral standards. Features works by Ludwig van Beethoven, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Felix Mendelssohn, and Franz Schubert. Includes a lecture by Szigeti on Beethoven's Sonatas for Violin & Piano. Recorded between 1942-1962.

MILLS, JEFF Moon - The Area Of Influence CD
Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing (July 20, 2019), Axis Records present the release of the album by Jeff Mills on his interpretations of Earth's Moon, The Area Of Influence. Jeff Mills on the release:"There are influences of the Moon we can detect, measure and document as scientific facts. If these are perceived as rational explanations, then it should raise questions about the possibility of other unseen mental and metaphysical connections humans have, not just with the Moon but with all other celestial bodies in and outside this Solar System. On the flipside, as we recognize that our Sun gives us light and a lifespan, what does an even greater force in the Cosmos, perhaps the darkness (or absence of anything) affects us. If we look at the Moon as a component in a vast configuration of integral connected parts, then an intuitive sense might lead us to a wider understanding about how deeply our relationship lies. This album and the imagination that helped to produce it should be considered as a proposition with open-endedness and no foreseeable conclusion. It is a chemistry of facts and feelings based on then, now and forever."

GUERRERO, TOMMY From The Soil To The Soul LP
Be With Records present the first vinyl issue of Tommy Guerrero's From The Soil To The Soul, originally released in 2006. Yes! Tommy Guerrero's much-loved fourth album -- the smooth West Coast classic From The Soil To The Soul -- gets its first ever vinyl release. As the follow up to his revered Soul Food Taqueria (BEWITH 026LP), this album was originally released by Quannum Records 2006 but only on CD. Working with Tommy directly, the LP has been fully remastered, cut on to heavyweight wax, and comes with artwork freshly reworked by the man himself. From The Soil To The Soul represents a continuation of Tommy's blissful guitar-soul whilst demonstrating increasingly complex chops and a slightly darker side to his distinctive sound. His spare, effortless funk is blended here with elements of Americana, heavy psych, lo-fi fuzz, and intoxicating Latin rhythms. Combined with his typically breezy, laid-back San Franciscan style, it's a vibe from start to finish. Recorded primarily in his home studio, Tommy wrote, arranged and played nearly all the instruments, including bass, guitar, keyboards, percussion, and kalimba. Renowned street artist Barry McGee, aka Twist, designed the cover art which Tommy has now recast in a deep, deep red for the vinyl version. As ever with Tommy, the highlights are many and memorable. From twinkling, sun-drenched opener "Hello Again" to the penultimate, punk-rocking track "Let Me In Let Me Out" (featuring the melodic yet fearsome rapping of Lyrics Born), the variety across the LP is relentless, but satisfying, and without once losing focus. You're treated to the gorgeous hip-hop blues of "The Under Dog", Meters-style Hammond B-3 jams like "War No More" and "No Guns More Glory" and Balearic bangers like Bing Ji Ling's star-turn on the sleazy "Don't Fake It". Curumin's soulful guest vocal elevates the already-great Brazilian lounge feels of "Salve" to hitherto unscaled heights and the heavy, driving basslines -- funky and warm on "Badder Than Bullets", somber and intense in "Tomorrow's Goodbye" and "Molotov Telegram" -- never fail to move both body and soul. But Be With's favourite track is the beautiful breezy pop of "Just Ain't Me". A bittersweet, skipping ballad which boasts an incredibly rare instance of Tommy singing. "What you want from me, I can never give" he repeats throughout, lending the already-melancholic atmosphere greater poignancy. It would've been number 1 across the planet in a parallel universe. Remastered. 180 gram vinyl.

FRIZZI, FABIO Shark Rosso Nell'oceano LP
A breaking release -- co-produced with Ribot, long-time publishling company of Fabio Frizzi -- of the score for Shark Rosso Nell'oceano (aka Devil Fish), another chapter in the DDJ series in which Beat Records continues releasing scores of a more potent and dynamic flavor. Directed by Lamberto Bava in 1984, Shark Rosso Nell'oceano marks one of two collaborations between the director and musician (the other being Blastfighter, released the same year). It's an aquatic monster movie, a spin-off of the most popular adventure/horror movies from the other side of the ocean, dedicated to the ancestral fight between man and shark, the latter portrayed in a more horrific and evolved, almost alien, shape. The score presents a real treat for all fans of Frizzi and '80s electronic/synth sounds, never before released and now available thanks to the miraculous discovery in an old archive of a multitrack master tape featuring the original recording session on separate channels. Thanks to an accurate restoration and new mix by Alessio Contorni at Octopus Studios (supervised by Frizzi), it was possible to produce an LP featuring the score of this rare soundtrack, yet another example of the fascinating compositional style of Frizzi during the period (including Zombie Flesh Eaters, The Beyond, City of the Living Dead, etc.), music which has become iconic in the collective consciousness of horror and thriller music lovers. Incidentally, on his "Zombie Apocalypse" world tour, Frizzi performs a suite from this score during the concert, always among the most appreciated moments at these events! 180 gram vinyl. Liner notes by Fabio Frizzi. Graphic design by Daniele De Gemini and Alessio Iannuzzi.

DE ANGELIS, GUIDO & MAURIZIO Bomber LP
Finally, an important void in Guido & Maurizio De Angelis's discography is filled. Nearly 40 years since its theatrical release in 1982, one of the most long-awaited scores for the fans of the two Roman musicians is now available. Directed by Michele Lupo and starring Bud Spencer and Jerry Calà, the movie tells the story of an ex-pugilist who is given the chance to amend an old wrong he suffered while supporting the cause of a young athlete's gym. For this soundtrack, the two brothers build a score based on the theme "Fantasy", a very popular cue held dear by generations of cartoons lovers since this melody is also the Italian main title of "Galaxy", the famous cartoon that follows the adventures of two heroes onboard a space train. Another theme is the Italian answer to the Philadelphia Rocky fanfares composed by Bill Conti few years before, a cue that keeps an epic and sporty tone but more in line with the comedy aura of that movie. Also present are other cues synchronized with the movie's key scene, as variants of the two main themes or as alternate solutions. The CD is presented as a deluxe edition in the DDJ DLX series, mastered from the original elements and remastered by Enrico De Gemini and arranged in film sequence with the addition of some bonus tracks and outtakes. Includes a full-color, 12-page booklet with liner notes by Daniele De Gemini and original artwork painted by Renato Casaro, kindly granted by the artists.

HENNIX/THE DEONTIC MIRACLE, CATHERINE CHRISTER Selections from 100 Models of Hegikan Roku 2LP
Selections from 100 Models of Hegikan Roku is the second in an ongoing series of archival records of the unheard music of Swedish composer, philosopher, poet, mathematician, and visual artist Catherine Christer Hennix, co-released by Blank Forms Editions and Empty Editions. It follows 2018's Selected Early Keyboard Works and coincides with Blank Forms' publication of Poësy Matters and Other Matters, a two-volume collection of Hennix's writing. Upon her return to Sweden from New York in 1971, Hennix sought to form a large ensemble inspired by her encounters with La Monte Young and recordings by the Theatre of Eternal Music. She enlisted her brother Peter Hennix, Hans Isgren, and a dozen Swedish jazz musicians she had previously worked with, naming the group and its pieces of music after the time and days of the week according to the Angus Maclise calendar (e.g. "The Pointed Time Bus"). Frustrated with the jazz musicians' inability to comprehend and play the intervals of just intonation, she pared the group down to the trio of herself, her brother, and Isgren and christened the live-electronic ensemble The Deontic Miracle. In 1976, The Deontic Miracle performed Hennix's original compositions, alongside works by La Monte Young, Terry Riley, and Terry Jennings, as part of Brouwer's Lattice at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm. With Hennix on amplified Renaissance oboe, live electronics, and sine wave generators, her brother on amplified Renaissance oboe, and Isgren on amplified sarangi, the recordings presented here of the group's first and only public concert see them channeling late period John Coltrane and the sopranino and soprano saxophone playing of La Monte Young and Terry Jennings in the Theatre of Eternal Music. With titles taken from Japanese Gagaku, "Music of Auspicious Clouds" and "Waves of the Blue Sea" are expansive drone improvisations, breathing with the pulsating lull of cicadas' organic sonic latticework. Now accessible for the first time, these recordings by what Hennix has called "the most rejected band ever formed in Sweden" continue to fill gaps of silence from a figure whose work has until recently remained flickering at the margins of some of the most enduring cultural developments of the 20th century.

DENTON & STUDIO MAGIC, LACHLAN A Brother LP
After releasing his debut solo album Two Months In Ben Woolley's Room in 2018, Lachlan Denton directed his focus back to The Ocean Party. After finishing off their next record and in the midst of organizing its release Lachlan's brother and Ocean Party band mate, Zac Denton, tragically and suddenly passed away. The band released The Oddfellows' Hall as well as an EP of Zac's final Ocean Party recordings, titled Nothing Grows, and put their band of ten years to rest. In a state of shock and confusion Lachlan put his thoughts to music, working through his emotions and looking for solace in a time of immense sadness. A Brother though born from grief, is work of catharsis and a stunning reflection on a loving relationship between brothers. To record the album, Lachlan assembled a band now collectively known as Studio Magic, featuring Ambrin Hasnain (Cool Sounds, Pregnancy, Skydeck), Dainis Lacey (Cool Sounds), Liam Halliwell (The Ocean Party, No Local), Rose Kean, and Anila Hasnain, to live track the album at his Coburg home and Halliwell's home studio in Preston. Mixed and mastered by Halliwell, the album has a live charm that lends itself to the honest and personal nature of the songwriting. The clean instrumental interplay and Denton's deft pop hooks perfectly juxtapose against the devastatingly direct lyrical content, creating songs that are equal parts sad and hopeful. A Brother is also a tribute to an incredible person and songwriter taken from us far too soon. Features a cover of a Zac Denton original, "Spat Out", taken from Zac's own solo work under the Hobby Farm moniker.

CARDOPUSHER A Convenient Excuse Pt. 2 12"
There's a notable progression in A Convenient Excuse Pt. 2 with Cardopusher appearing to be a producer in fast-forward stride. If Pt. 1 (BNR 183EP) was a survey of the darker side of '80s industrial and EBM, Pt. 2 takes a more focused look at the sort of "haunted Italo". Four of the five tracks are up-tempo and club ready this time, driven by vicious arpeggios and bit crushed drums. Skinny Puppy atmospherics still make their appearance, and it is still music to play a tabletop game of Shadownrun to.

LAID BACK Laid Back CD
Brother Music present an official reissue and first CD issue of Laid Back's self-titled debut album, originally released in 1981. Released by Laid Back on their own label in a carefully re-edited edition including seven bonus tracks. Remastered by the band from the original 4-track audio tapes. Includes the timeless early hit "Bolivia" and the classic "Roger" which was covered by MGMT. In the beginning, Laid Back studio was a 4-track studio. Many of the songs from the first album were recorded on 4-track, including "Bolivia". However, in the process the band upgraded to an 8-track and re-recorded "Bolivia", the version that made the album. Listening back to the 4-track version, it has got the groove that was lost on the 8-track version. Laid Back were always going for the best sound. All of the band's big hits are first takes --that's where the magic is. Much time and effort were spent to restore the 4-track version, without changing or adding anything. Just editing and improvement of sound. Engineered by Bjørn Winnem.

VALCARCEL, EDGAR Composiciones Electronicas Para Los Andes (1967-2006) LP
Edgar Valcárcel (Puno, 1932-Lima, 2010) was one of the most important composers in Peru. He belonged to a crucial generation centered around the 1950s, which also included César Bolaños, Leopoldo La Rosa, Celso Garrido-Lecca, Enrique Pinilla, and Francisco Pulgar Vidal. These musicians were responsible for introducing locally the new languages of the international musical avant-garde, in a meeting with the legacies of Peruvian native music, where the folkloric material was used under very free and abstract conceptions. Although Valcárcel distinguished himself as a prolific and remarkable composer of orchestral and chamber music, as well as a notable pianist, his interest in electronic composition was registered in four pieces that are a good example of his musical obsessions. "Invención" (Invention) (1967), composed in Columbia under the watchful eyes of Vladimir Ussachevsky, represented an outstanding beginning in these new languages and can retrospectively be considered as one of the masterpieces that sprung from the New York research center. There he also began the composition of "Zampoña Sónica" (Sonic Zampoña) (1968-2006), a visionary work, initially designed for magnetic tape and flute, revised after his appointment at McGill University in 1976, until its final form in 2006, which was premiered in Lima in a version for native instruments processed live with the original electronic track. "Flor De Sancayo II: Retablo" (Flower of Sancayo II: Altarpiece) (1976) for piano and magnetic tape, was composed at the Electronic Music Studio of McGill University in Montreal, Canada, led by Alcides Lanza and where Valcárcel was appointed as a guest teacher. The work takes as a reference a huayno from the region of Puno in dialogue with electronic sounds. "Canto Coral A Túpac Amaru II" (Choral Song for Túpac Amaru II) (1968), for choir, percussion, projections, lights, and magnetic tape, a work based on the poem "Canto Coral A Túpac Amaru, Que Es La Libertad" (Choral Song for Túpac Amaru, who is Freedom) by the Peruvian poet Alejandro Romualdo, is inspired by the indigenous leader of the largest anti-colonial rebellion that occurred in Latin America during the eighteenth century. These pieces are now published on vinyl, as part of the Essentials Sounds collection, with which Buh Records presents a series of fundamental works of the musical avant-garde in Peru.

JARDIN Maqui De Hierro LP
Jardín was made up of Orlando Ramírez and Raúl Gómez, and has been a true cult band of Lima's experimental underground since they made themselves known at the end of the 1990s, when they started playing at electronic music venues as well as in the context of art performances and contemporary dance events. Maqui De Hierro, their fourth published work, defined the sonic universe of the duo, in which electronic cosmic experimentation converges with hypnotic rhythmic patterns inspired by ritual percussion music from the Amazon, using console feedback processed by pedals, drum machines, and ocarinas. Jardín's work can be related to that of other great luminaries of rhythmic repetition such as Silver Apples, Suicide, Esplendor Geométrico, or Pansonic, a sound that finds in Maqui De Hierro a singular incarnation: metallic drum machines that lead the trance between echoes and layers of reverberant sounds, in a kind of rhythmic drone dub trip. Appeared in cassette format in 2005, Maqui De Hierro collects recordings of 2002 and 2003, made during intense and unforgettable concerts, as well as recorded sessions at the duo's private haven known as Cuarto Azul, located in an industrial zone of Lima. Recorded entirely live and direct to open reel tape, Maqui De Hierro is now published for the first time in vinyl format, as part of the Essential Sounds collection, with which Buh Records discloses a series of fundamental albums of Peruvian sound experimentation.

CLUSTER & ENO Cluster & Eno LP
2019 repress of Bureau B's 2009 reissue. LP version. Originally recorded and released in 1977 on Sky Records, the first collaborative album by Brian Eno and Cluster was the first ambient record produced in Germany, and is considered the seminal, defining work of the genre. Brian Eno was certainly instrumental in creating and popularizing the concept of "ambient music" -- but it was not his invention alone. The German musicians Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius (Cluster) were brothers in spirit. As so often in music, the idea of ambient was in the air -- both Eno and Cluster experimenting with the form in the 1970s, rendering any debate as to who influenced who redundant. What is certain, is that Brian Eno attended a Cluster concert in Hamburg in 1975, strategically positioning himself in the front row. Sure enough, he was invited on stage to jam with the band and, after the show, the participants arranged to meet up again. They did so two years later at the Old Weserhof in Forst, the domicile of the German duo. Eno and Cluster spent three weeks in Conny Plank's studio, resulting in two albums: Cluster & Eno and After The Heat (1978). In the liner notes, Asmus Tietchens (who also plays on the record along with Can's Holger Czukay) writes: "Clearly, all three musicians inspired each other during their three weeks together without any clash of personalities. Nevertheless, some tracks sound more like Cluster, some more like Eno. So it made perfect sense to collect the tracks with a Cluster flavor on Cluster & Eno." The importance of this record can never be overstated, nor can its elegance of diverse forms be matched. From Indian sitar and tamboura, to synth warbles and airy tributes to Western groove, it is a rare glimpse at what happens when masters meet.

PARTCH, HARRY The World Of Harry Partch LP
2019 repress; 180 gram exact repro reissue, originally released in 1969. "The World of Harry Partch collects three of his best short pieces. 'Daphne of the Dunes' (1967) is a side-long update of 'Windsong' written for dance. The melodic segments are given more emphasis than usual for a Partch piece, and harmonically this is one of his best with arpeggiated glides/cries of the Harmonic Canons evoking our sympathies. Meter changes almost measure by measure, with one section in 31/16 meter; another (polymetric) section consists of 4/4-7/4 over 4/8-7/8! Needless to say, while being very physical, Partch's music isn't something you can easily tap your foot to. What's most important is that it works. Partch was not one to introduce musical complexity merely for its own sake, another factor that separated him from his contemporaries. Not only are the rhythms complex, but they are performed at a frantic pace unequaled by any music I've hard (save perhaps the inhumanly fast player piano pieces of Conlon Nancarrow!). This is characteristic of most of Partch's works, though I think 'Daphne' is one of the most successful and exhilarating. 'Barstow -- Eight Hitchhiker Inscriptions from a Highway Railing at Barstow, California' was composed in 1941 as part of 'The Wayward.' It offers such statements as 'Go to 538 East Lemon Avenue for an easy handout' and 'Looking for millionaire wife...' This charismatic piece is successful due to the contrasting of Partch's intoning voice with others in the ensemble and to increased instrumental emphasis. Last is 'Castor and Pollux' in a more modern performance than From the Music of Harry Partch, with greater vigor and fidelity. The World of Harry Partch is an excellent introduction to his works that comes highly recommended." -- Surface Noise

For his DGTL release, Lauer offers the three-tracker Topo Chico doused with his signature sound. "Inkel Jet 880" might be described as a modern Italo track, but without the typical accented vocals -- thick and synth-y bass-line, sharp chords, a thumping beat, and two effective breaks. "Topo Chico" is a softer sounding track with a swinging bassline and high-pitched arrangement that builds up to stretched-out chords. "Topo Chico (Tribute Mix)" starts with an acidic bass line that drops into a bath of soft sounding bells and Lauer's signature stretched-out chords, while the arrangement gives the track a nostalgic vibe.

GALBRAITH, ALASTAIR Morse LP
"A central figure of the New Zealand underground since his days in The Rip over three decades ago, Alastair Galbraith has worked alongside scores of Kiwi legends as a multi-instrumentalist and solo artist. Morse appeared in 1992, a Siltbreeze/Xpressway co-release, and despite Galbraith's centrality to the magical NZ mix, the record is an 'outsider' classic, a peerless piece of Antipodean collage, diverted folk, and minimal psychedelia. Galbraith plays almost everything on Morse, with periodic assists from Bruce Russell, Robbie Muir and others. Mutable, unfussy arrangements -- for acoustic and electric guitar, piano, violin, and some proper post-VU thudding--gather and crumble around obliquely phrased double-tracked vocals, sharing an enigmatic yet intuitive emotional quality with much NZ music of the period. And while his process might be homespun, don't call this lo-fi: listen close and hear microscopic layers of detail in Galbraith's plangent guitar work, the texture of amplified strings distinct from the notes they're sounding, melodies and sibilant murmurs swallowed as songs melt or careen into one another. Morse's fragmentary song suites conjure a post-70s in which Syd Barrett fucked off to Dunedin and started roadying for The Clean, or John Cale traded blow for tea and a Tascam. Untouchable in spirit and execution, Morse is a long-undersung gem of the international '90s underground by a bona fide NZ legend."

DE ANGELIS, GUIDO & MAURIZIO ... E Poi Lo Chiamarono Il Magnifico CD
Digitmovies present the original soundtrack for the mythical De Angelis brothers for the movie ... E Poi Lo Chiamarono Il Magnifico (Man of the East), originally released in 1972. After Franco Micalizzi had written the music for the first trinity movie and Guido and Maurizio De Angelis for its sequel, the two musician brothers were recruited again to write a new original score that was issued in those days on an LP with 12 tracks and also on a 45rpm single with two tracks. Digitmovies have searched for the original recording session master tapes which were recently rescued in very good condition and in full stereo: this gave the label the chance to add six bonus tracks not included in the original vinyl. A note for collectors and audiophiles: for this ultimate edition Digitmovies did not use the album master assembled in 1972, but they were able to recreate the original album mock-up's sequence/editing with all the takes taken directly from first generation stereo session tapes. And this new version has a really improved sound quality. The main theme is called "Don't Lose Control", a romantic-epic theme with country-pop flavor performed by Gene Roman and reprised as an instrumental version played by a large orchestra. The De Angelis brothers have succeeded in recreating the whole Western atmosphere by alternating classic Western-flavored themes with soft ones like the romantic love theme "Tema Di Candida" (Jesus Come To My Heart), a gospel with sacred flavor vocalized by the Nora Orlandi choir. Directed in 1972 by E.B. Clucher (real name Enzo Barboni) and starring Terence Hill, Gregory Walcott, Yanti Somer, Dominic Barto, Enzo Fiermonte, and Riccardo Pizzuti. LAI, FRANCIS Anima Persa CD
Digitmovies release the complete edition CD of the original soundtrack by Francis Lai for the 1977 drama The Forbidden Room (aka Anima Persa). The legendary Oscar-winning composer Francis Lai wrote the music for this psychological film based on a recurring nostalgic main theme for orchestra with Moog interventions, which is introduced in the opening credits. The author has succeeded perfectly in representing the atmosphere of a mysterious and esoteric Venice, with a whole series of tense motifs alternated with romantic pop atmospheres and baroque phrases. C.A.M. had originally released a vinyl LP with 14 tracks. Thanks to the stereo master tapes from the recording session, Digitmovies were able to discover six unreleased tracks which bring our CD. This is without a doubt one of Francis Lai's masterpieces, and one of the greatest in international film music, which Digitmovies reissue after already having released his fabulous music for Baby Sitter in 2010. Directed in 1976 by Dino Risi, the film features Vittorio Gassman, Catherine Deneuve, Danilo Mattei, Anicée Alvina, Ester Carloni, Gino Cavalieri, Michele Capnist, and Aristide Caporale. Nineteen-year-old Tino, an aspiring painter, goes to Venice to visit his uncle Fabio Stolz -- a former engineer at a gas company who is proud of his Hapsburg origin -- and his wife Elisa, a sickly blonde woman who is completely submissive to her husband. One evening Tino hears unexplainable noises coming from the attic in the ancient building they live in. The hired help reveals to Tino what the noises are and Tino's aunt and uncle reluctantly confirm what she says -- Fabio's lunatic brother lives in the attic. He went insane after causing the death of his niece Beba, Elisa's ten-year-old daughter from her first marriage, whom he had fallen in love with. However, there are conflicting versions to the story: according to Fabio, Elisa let her daughter die of pneumonia because she did not treat it in time. But where is Beba's grave? There is no trace of it at the cemetery. Increasingly intrigued, Tino discovers another lie: his uncle does not work but instead spends his days with friends, squandering Elisa's fortune. Once Tino finds the attic door open he finally has an explanation to the mystery: a shocking explanation that will convince him to leave Venice forever.

PREVOST, EDDIE Matching Mix LP
"'In October 2018 we took several recordings in and around Eddie Pre?vost's home village of Matching Tye in Essex, where he has been living for the past fifty years. The majority of the pieces that made it to this LP took place in All Saints Church, High Laver, the burial site of John Locke. This fact was notable in the choice of title for this set of recordings, and it seemed necessary to put forward Eddie's own take on Locke that he offered in our correspondences: 'Scholars of Locke's philosophy will be familiar with the idea of mixing labour with materials as a fore-running notion of possessive individualism and basis for private property. Such 'mixing' is a persuasive description of a creative act. But the theory is more worthy of a social dimension.' As for the individual titles for each of the studies on the LP, each takes ideas and elements from music past. For example, MaxPlus makes a nod towards bebop pioneering drummer Max Roach who offered an earlier hit-hat study. Eddie utilises such examples, offering further creative insights which can then be woven back into the common wealth of sound. The final track, returning to the bowed cymbal method of the first, was recorded outdoors on a breezy green, and is pictured on the back cover of the sleeve. It was an attempt to capture the playing in its 'metamusical' relationship with the untempered sounds of the external environment. Eddie has written about Metamusic in his book The First Concert (Copula, 2011): invoking childlike 'protomusical' behaviour, or the sense of music that a person might possess before the inevitable influences come to play any role in their productive, and appreciative, musical development. Ross Lambert provided a few words alongside his cover drawing entitled 'The Metamusician': "The eyes would symbolise for me things like searching, examining, closeness or friendship I think; engagement with the world. Decisions in making the image were completely intuitive, this is just me looking for the meaning, post-analysing, post rationalising.' -Daniel Kordik & Edward Lucas, March 2019"

SENIOR ALLSTARS FEAT. AMMOYE, THE Soul From Dubdown - Darker Than Blue CD
"We were inspired by that brilliant release Darker Than Blue: Soul From Jamdown (on Blood & Fire Records from Manchester in co-operation with PK in London) and felt compelled to perform this beautiful gem in a dub version..."In spring 2014, when the Senior Allstars were asked by the Hamburg-based dub label Echo Beach to record their interpretation of an existing release (the original was released in 2001), everyone involved assumed that the results would be good. What absolutely no one expected was that the album would be so incredibly "conspirational" and simply bursting with fresh ideas. The album that Soul From Dubdown - Darker Than Blue is based on is the compilation Darker Than Blue: Soul From Jamdown, which was released in 2001 on Blood & Fire Records. More than ten years later, the mind behind the Echo Beach label, Nicolai Beverungen, had a vision of taking the next, the third step along this path. "From the beginning it was clear to me that I wanted an instrumental band to do the job, and the venerable Senior Allstars, the leading lights in their class, were my top pick", says Beverungen. The results are more than breath-taking; the songs drip from the speaker membranes like honey, bringing in the sun, warmth and happiness, very much in keeping with the original songs -- although the lyrics may have been written with other things in mind. The dub remake presented by The Senior Allstars breaks all previous dimensions and conventions set by the history and spirit of this legendary album. The quartet creates an original, collective, improvised and organic live dub that is in the tradition of the original songs and with new versions that fully deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as the originals. 2019 -- the next step to break the peak and quality of the exciting album -- was making it into a vocal album and call it Soul From Dubdown - Darker Than Blue. The former was quite easy. They hired the Juno winner (the Canadian music prize and pendant to the American Grammy) from 2017 Ammoye, with an amazing voice, who was born in Jamaica and raised in Toronto, Canada. A brilliant and crisp album."

EDDIE C Green Space 2LP +7"
Double LP version. Includes 7". Canadian beatdown master Eddie C is back with his fourth full-length on endless flight, Green Space. This new album is his unique mixture of laidback hip-hop and lo-fi house sound which is inspired by late '80s to early '90s music, and much darker than usual. Green Space kicks off with old school hip-hop tracks of "Carbondate", "In The Park" then the new wave disco sound of "Way Uptown" -- its reminiscent of NYC post punk/new wave artist konk. There's the dubby Brazilian percussive disco track "Batucada", and "Berlina" is early '90s NYC house, like Pal Joy. The most club-friendly track "Bad Words" is wired, new wave-y vocal house madness and the album closes with the dreamy downtempo track "An Der Wedding" -- heavy krautrock influenced stuff. Features Mister Joshooa.

NOTHING TO SEMBLE Corners and Their Places Cassette
"Herewith, the first expression of the newest project helmed by Brooklyn polymath, Curtis Godino (known for his work with light shows and visual art as much as for his most excellent musical combo, Worthless [FTR 417, 2019]). Mellotron is often Curtis' sonic weapon of choice, and his expressively modal use of the instrument makes Justin Hayward sound like, well... Justin Hayward. In Curtis' hands, this ungainly behemoth of a keyboard retains a massive sort of prog pompery that is equal parts majesty and idiocy. The instrumental sections build weirdly ornate sky castles, which are larded with presumably heisted spoken sections, or cloud-like vocals, often resembling Ummagumma-era Floyd (1969) in all its wheezy glory. There are also drums on a few tracks, employing a light spacey approach that's fully in keeping with the proceedings. You can hear some guitar squirreled away in the mix as well. The mellotron is such a huge strange presence, however, it really shapes things, making me recall (almost too vividly) dark winter nights in prep school dorms filled with In the Court of the Crimson King (1969), bad acid, and In Search of the Lost Chord (1968). For all that blunder-bussing, Nothing To Semble sometimes offers a very intimate vibe as well (even though the lyrics are not fully penetrable). Which makes it perfect listening for those who like using psychotropics, or at least like thinking about using psychotropics. Either way, count me in." --Byron Coley, 2019 Edition of 250.

CHADBOURNE, EUGENE Solo Guitar Volume 3-1/3 LP
"Eugene Chadbourne is one of the great guitar players of the modern era. At the time he began recording in Canada in 1975, his music was a unique syncretic formulation. While its most obvious component was free improvisation in a style then most widely associated with English and European players, his music also contained elements of jazz, country, folk, blues, psychedelic and international sounds, referencing these threads in ways that were so diverse and intensely personalized it would take scholars decades to decode them. Volume 3-1/3 is the third of four LPs Feeding Tube is releasing, devoted to documenting some of the music Dr. Chadbourne was creating during the years he was based in the provinces of Canada, while avoiding the conscriptive powers of Richard Nixon and his ilk. Exact details of the recordings are vague, but that's trivial. Here are seven tracks of improvisational guitar madness at its most glorious. Describing them is almost impossible, but I can at least tell you their names 'East Was,' 'Texas Was,' 'The Shreeve,' 'Evil Was,' 'What Was,' 'Superman's Problem,' and 'Reflections.' The 'Was Tetrology' was a piece I believe to have been originally conceived and performed while in the lair of Davey Williams, R.I.P. (and associated members of the Alabama Surrealist Cabal). 'The Shreeve' is another take of a track originally recorded for the timeless Volume Two LP. 'Reflections' and 'Superman's Problem' probably date to a Clouds & Water session in early '79. Heard together they suggest an entire parallel universe of guitar history. Solo Guitar Volume 3-1/3 is an even more amazing spin than the last one. And there's still one more to come!" --Byron Coley, 2019 Edition of 400.

IDEA FIRE COMPANY The Light That Never Ceases to Fail LP
"In my count, this is the 25th album by Amherst's Idea Fire Company. And it a marvel of creative whackery that unfolds its charms like a glamorous stripper doing a matinee show at a well-lit coal mine. Many key auxiliary members have passed through IFCO's ranks (Dr. Steve, Jessi Leigh Swenson, Meira O'Reilly, Franz de Waard, Graham Lambkin, Matt Krefting, etc.), but the core of the unit has always been Karla Borecky (catcher, piano) and Scott Foust (first base, trumpet/synth). On The Light they are joined by bassist, Mike Popovich (a long-time Foust colluder), and the results are an album of unqualified beauty. Karla's piano is the central focus here, employing a simple (almost Satie-like) approach to melody, with a physical touch reminiscent of Chris Abrahams' work with Necks. She combines mystery and familiarity with uncanny ease. Scott's trumpet work has kinda come into its own here as well, sounding like Franz Koglmann mocking Chet Baker. His synth playing also has its own distinct atmospheric quality. Sometimes it's like a distant fog horn guiding brine shrimp to safety, at others more like someone trying to make wood sculptures with a band saw. Popovich's bass playing uses an equally sneaky environmental approach, often appearing to be an immobile object that suddenly shifts its posture in a way that is contextually startling. Scott Foust has been one of the leading lights of the Western Mass experimental scene for many long years. That we have only done one record with him thus far -- Dead Girls Party (FTR 279LP, 2018), an overlooked masterpiece -- is mostly due to the fact that we keep very different hours. How nice to sync up for this one." --Byron Coley, 2019 Edition of 250.

TRINARY SYSTEM Lights in the Center of Your Head LP
"Great debut album by the new trio led by Detroit/Boston guitar legend Roger Miller. Roger has been going at it since he was a tiny baby, with a recording career that stretches back to Sproton Layer in 1970. He is still probably best known for his work with Mission of Burma, but cognoscenti wallow in his work with the original Destroy All Monsters, F.U.K., Empool, the Farmers, his crazy solo stuff, and recent jamming with M2. With Trinary System, Roger manages to get wild trio aktion going that touches on all phases of his magnificent trajectory. Things start off in classic Burma mode, but everything feels a bit more straightforward than it did with that rascally outfit. There is a garageyness and almost pre-punk feel to some of the playing here that has been a footnote to some Burma tunes, but is allowed full rein with Trinary System. The drummer, Larry Dersch, was half of the electric piano/drums duo, Binary System, in the '90s. His collaborations with Roger continued into later versions of Birdsongs of the Mesozoic (Boston's premier prog band for over 20 years). Bass and synth are handled by Andrew Willis (an ex-pat from the Louisville sub-underground). Together, they create a sound employing a powerful retro-futurist vibe. At times it's almost like hearing a mid '70s power trio having a collective dream about the post-punk future. But there's a distinct Motor City feel to the proceedings as well. The music is just perfect for barreling down the highway (as I tested on a recent drive to Pittsburgh) with thick, chunky riffs, odd vocals harmonies, and proletarian lyrics, all tied together with the kind of whizzing guitar parts you didn't think anyone but J Mascis made anymore. There are also miasmic psych flows, which the trio tends to emphasize a bit more in live concert, but you should just buy the thing & figure it out yourself. Pleasure guaranteed." --Byron Coley, 2019

PERRY, JORDAN Witness Tree LP
"Vinylization of a self-released cassette issued earlier this year by our favorite Virginia-based guitar player. Witness Tree is a brilliant follow-up to Perry's eponymous debut LP (FTR 376LP, 2018), and expands upon the form-abstractions he first displayed there. Mr. Perry has a firm and solid touch to his string wrangling, but unlike many of his contemporaries, he doesn't seem to feel compelled to resolve all the melodic questions he raises. Perry often stops in a place he finds interesting, repeating rhythmic figures while trying out variations on the note/chord sequence that stopped him in the first place. It's a goddamn fascinating approach and allows him to explore textual aspects of the acoustic guitar that are not investigated often enough. In a certain sense, Perry's playing feels akin to that of Jon Collin's, since both guitarists appear to acknowledge the American Primitive School, while approaching its compositional orthodoxy with an attitude that substitutes experimental tendencies for blues-base thinking. But the way they resolve these themes is quite different. Perry's slower pacing and precise string selection eschews the aleatory for a kind of mindfulness that is as invigorating as I usually find randomness. A deep and lovely dig into the outer edges of acoustic guitar rambling." --Byron Coley, 2019 Edition of 400; includes download slip. 45rpm.

ALEXANDER, JEFFREY Meditations for Beowulf LP
"Welcome to the second solo vinyl album by Jeffrey Alexander, best known these days for the lysergic guidance he provides for SF's Dire Wolves. But Alexander has underground roots that go far beyond his work with the Wolves. Back in the '90s, when still based in Providence RI, he ran the Secret Eye label, helmed a couple of superb acid-folk units and was the person most responsible for bringing not one, but two editions of the Terrastock Festival to the city Lovecraft built. Since relocating to the Bay Area, Alexander has spent a good bit of time turning Dire Wolves into one of the most elegantly psychedelic bands on the scene, and has also managed to lend an occasional splash of sound to Jackie O Motherfucker. And all of these different arcs make themselves felt on Meditations for Beowulf. Buttressed by two tracks with vocals, there are six instrumentals that explore many nooks and crannies of experimental logic, running from the doodly keyboard larking of 'Turn Your Lights Down Low' to the crackly, throbbing space-wheeze of 'Iridescent Clouds.' The two vocal tracks have the lyrics printed on the back, so you can sing along if you like. 'Beowulf's Trip' has a stoned vibe that will make fans of the MVEE sound tingle deep down in their souls. And 'Sunsplash Your Mind' is a sort of answer song to the well-known question, 'What was it like to do acid with John Lennon?' The answer is especially intriguing because it posits that Lennon was able to predict the names of Hüsker Dü's three LPs for SST. And also that he could distinguish between and actual LP and a mere mini-LP (Metal Circus) when doing his augury. Pretty damn hep. As is rest of this splendid face full of smoke. Breathe deep. You'll be glad you did." --Byron Coley, 2019 Edition of 250.

NEBULA Holy Shit CD
22 years after their first release (1999) and ten years after their last album (2008), Nebula are back. And you're thinking "Holy shit!" right now, you pretty much nailed it. Holy Shit is Nebula's first LP since 2009's Heavy Psych, and it quickly puts to rest the question that's loomed since guitarist/vocalist Eddie Glass, bassist Tom Davies, and drummer Michael Amster announced the band's reformation in 2017: Nebula are still Nebula. It's there in the inimitable space-grunge of "It's All Over", or the take-a-drag-and-be-gone "Let's Get Lost", or the way "Tomorrow Never Comes" manages to be so, so heavy and laid back at the same time. It's in the paradise-psych of "Gates Of Eden" and even the snoring you hear before the devilish "Man's Best Friend" kicks in to open the album (the studio couch became a crash spot). Since the days of 1998's Let It Burn EP and the now-classic To The Center debut album (HPS 066CD/LP/LTD-LP), Nebula have always been just a little more dangerous. Just a little more unhinged. Holy Shit shows this front-to-back for the essential part of their character it is, and yet it's not trying to be anything they've done before, whether it's those early outings or Heavy Psych or 2001's Charged (HPS 087CD/LP/LTD-LP), 2003's Apollo, or 2005's Atomic Ritual. It's a sixth Nebula album -- something for which even the most ardent of fans could hardly have hoped. The basic tracks were done in two days, recorded at Mysterious Mammal Studios in LA with Matt Lynch (also of Snail) at the helm. Leads and loops and feedback effects were done live by Glass and Davies as they recorded the basic tracks, just the way they'd do it on stage, and overdubs followed after as needed. A glut of material was produced and whittled down to the core of what you hear here. A sixth Nebula album. And when you hear it, you'll find yourself saying that title all over again. NEBULA Holy Shit LP
LP version. GORILLA Treecreeper CD
Treecreeper, the first full-length album by Gorilla since 2007's Rock Our Souls. Preserving the classic Gorilla chest beatin', full-throttle sound, Treecreeper's nine slices of mind-bending, shitstorm rock combine elements of stoner, high-energy, doom, and heavy psych rock honed to razor sharp fuzz-toned perfection. Recorded in good old-fashioned analog at the North Downs Studio, Gorilla create a non-stop, white knuckle, maximum riffin' hell ride that will break your ears and loosen your rears. As one review of a recent show stated: "Gorilla sound like Blue Cheer, Motorhead, and St Vitus all playing in the same room at the same time." YAWNING MAN Macedonian Lines CD
Yawning Man continue to establish their exceptionally unique approach to rock music on their latest album, Macedonian Lines. This follow-up to the critically acclaimed Revolt Against Tired Noises (HPS 081CD/LP/LTD-LP, 2018) shows a further maturing of melody, dynamics, and emotion in the band's song writing. Yawning Man's roots lay at the foundation of the desert rock and stoner rock sub genres however the music the band creates is truly organic and visceral, conjuring a flowing imagery and an emotional response. On this release, the band has a darker and massively heavier sound than past recordings as most of these tracks were developed in live performance and then fully realized in the studio. Yawning Man returned to Gatos Trail Studio in the Joshua Tree Desert in California to record this album and the space and beauty of the surroundings is ever present in every track. Heavy, beautiful, and delicate. Gary Arce, Mario Lalli, and Bill Stinson continue to expand and dig deep with every track. Formed in the late 1980s, the lineup of Arce, Lalli, and Stinson rounds out their yearlong active recording and touring schedule. Arce and Lalli's background together date back to the start of Yawning Man with Stinson's background steeped in the SST Records world through performing and recording with Greg Ginn and Chuck Dukowski of Black Flag for several years. Yawning Man is acknowledged and recognized throughout the underground heavy music community as a key piece in the developments of the desert/stoner rock subgenres. While their contemporaries gravitated toward the heavy riffs of grunge, and post punk, Yawning Man leaned in another direction with their unique and organic, cinematic compositions and psychedelic improvisations, the perfect soundtrack to encompass the spacious moonscape atmosphere of the well documented "generator parties" of their area in the late 1980s.

VA La Torre Ibiza Volumen Tres CD
A secluded gem in Ibiza's now commercial landscape, La Torre is located in Cap Negret, within the picturesque countryside of San Antonio. Picturesque views of the magical Mediterranean sunset intertwine with true Balearic melodies, where like-minded strangers connect with bygone friends. Volumen Tres of La Torre Ibiza is compiled by long term friends Pete Gooding and Mark Barrott. Veterans within the Ibizan landscape, the concept behind the compilation is to reflect the true beginnings of the island's heritage. Old records merge with new boundary pushing productions, but all in-keeping with the theme of the true Balearic soundscape. The compilation begins with "Alsema Dub". The product of Bill Laswell & Jah Wobble's liquid bass ethnicity, a cooing vocal is complimented by the pulse of trumpets as an ethereal synth runs in the background. Berlin based Neapolitan duo Nu Guinea create "'A Voce 'E Napule", an exotic funk-driven number, whilst Canadian native Pacific Coliseum creates the tropical, emotive "Morning at Made's". American alt country icons Lambchop provide a feel-good yet bittersweet anthem in "Up With The People", before psychedelic Australians Tamam Shud create "Bali Waters", a masterpiece from the cult surf movie Morning of the Earth (1972). Downtempo talents Satoshi & Makoto produce the gently-moving "Crepuscule Leger", whilst Mac DeMarco's "On The Level" features soothing, left-of-center vocals and dream-like melodies. The late English punk impresario Malcolm McLaren takes you on an intricate, Asian-inspired journey with "Obatala", before Mark's re-imagination of the classic Tears For Fears track "Head Over Heels" ratchets up the drama and bliss with its widescreen vista. Trance's iconic "Ambiente", released in Germany in 1984, marries Eastern philosophy with Western electronics, before English hauntology talent The Advisory Circle forms a chillingly-beautiful masterpiece with "Sundial". American songwriter and composer Richard Torrance provides the groove-laden, percussion-filled "Anything's Possible", whilst Swing Out Sister's classic "After Hours" transports you into the twilight via its '80s jazz refrains. The penultimate track comes courtesy of Mark Barrott, who's "Mokuso" was inspired by his adventures in rural Japan and Tokyo by night, paving the way for the final selection: Colorama's "Coloured In Remix" of poet and author John Stammers's "Idle I'm".

MALONE, KALI The Sacrificial Code 3CD
Kali Malone presents a new album featuring nearly two hours of concentrated pipe organ pieces governed by a strict acoustic and compositional code. It's a major new work with ultimately profound emotional resonance. The Sacrificial Code takes a more surgical approach to the methods first explored on Organ Dirges 2016-2017 (ASCETICKALI). Over the course of three parts performed on three different organs, Malone's minimalist procedure captures a jarring precision of closeness, both on the level of the materiality of the sounds and on the level of composition. The recordings of The Sacrificial Code involve careful close-miking of the pipe organ in such a way as to eliminate environmental identifiers as far as possible -- essentially removing the large hall reverb so inextricably linked to the instrument. The pieces are then further compositionally stripped of gestural adornments and spontaneous expressive impulse -- an approach reminiscent of Steve Reich's words, "by voluntarily giving up the freedom to do whatever momentarily comes to mind, we are, as a result, free of all that momentarily comes to mind." With its slow, purified, and seemingly austere qualities, The Sacrificial Code guides you through an almost trance-inducing process where you become vulnerable receptors for every slight movement, where every miniature shift in sound becomes magnified through stillness. As such, it's a uniquely satisfying exercise in transcendence through self-restraint -- a stunning realization of ideas borne out of academic and conceptual rigor which gradually reveals startling personal dimensions. It has a perception-altering quality that encourages self-exploration free of signposts and without a preordained endpoint -- the antithesis to the language of colorless musical platitudes we've become so accustomed to. Features additional organ pieces performed by Ellen Arkbro. Art and photography by A.M. Rehm. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker. Triple-CD version includes bonus material.

OLIVEROS & GUY KLUCEVSEK, PAULINE Sounding / Way LP
Pauline Oliveros and Guy Klucevsek's Sounding / Way was originally released on cassette in 1986 and has been out of print ever since. This LP was cut by John Golden and pressed at RTI in order to achieve a quiet, dynamic pressing. The Sounding / Way concept was simple: Each artist would write a piece for two accordions and then they would perform them together. Thus, side A contains Guy Klucevsek's "Tremolo No. 6" performed by Guy Klucevsek and Pauline Oliveros. Side B contains Pauline's composition "The Tuning Meditation", also performed by both Pauline and Guy. This is the second release in an on-going effort between Important Records and the Pauline Oliveros Trust to maintain and promote the music, philosophy and legacy of Pauline Oliveros.Guy Klucevsek is one of the world's most versatile and highly-respected accordionists. He has performed and/or recorded with Laurie Anderson, Bang On a Can, Brave Combo, Anthony Braxton, Anthony Coleman, Dave Douglas, Bill Frisell, Rahim al Haj, Robin Holcomb, Kepa Junkera, the Kronos Quartet, Natalie Merchant, Present Music, Relâche, Zeitgeist, and John Zorn.Pauline Oliveros, composer, performer, and humanitarian, was an important pioneer in American Music. Acclaimed internationally, for four decades she explored sound -- forging new ground for herself and others. Through improvisation, electronic music, ritual, teaching and meditation she created a body of work with such breadth of vision that it profoundly effects those who experience it, and eludes many who try to write about it. Oliveros has been honored with awards, grants and concerts internationally. Whether performing at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., in an underground cavern, or in the studios of West German Radio, Oliveros's commitment to interaction with the moment was unchanged. She could make the sound of a sweeping siren into another instrument of the ensemble. "On some level, music, sound consciousness and religion are all one, and she would seem to be very close to that level." --John Rockwell "Through Pauline Oliveros and Deep Listening, I now know what harmony is. Originally released on cassette in 1987 following the 1986 release of Sounding / Way with Guy Klucevsek, also reissued by Important Records (IMPREC 471LP). This LP features two long sides of infinite depth and sensitivity. Oliveros performs these pieces using a just intonation accordion and her Expanded Instrument System in order to bend both time and pitch. "Both pieces are intended to aid the listener in times of spiritual change, but are just fine for 'everyday' use as well. Highly recommended." --Charles S. NATIONAL JAZZ TRIO OF SCOTLAND, THE Standards Vol. V CD
A masterclass in nuance, interpretation and the purifying power of the human voice, Standards Vol. V represents another captivating chapter in the career of a singular figure in contemporary music, Bill Wells. For his fifth album as the mischievously named National Jazz Trio Of Scotland, prolific jazz outsider Wells posits yet another collaborator in the diffuse light cast by his tender chord shifts and understated arrangements. Where Standards Vol. IV (KK 106CD/LP, 2018) spun around the vocal talents of Kate Sugden with contributions from Gerard Black and Aby Vulliamy, the voice on Standards Vol. V is that of Black, whose other musical activities include the band Babe, François And The Atlas Mountains, Rozi Plain, and Charlotte Gainsbourg. For much of Standards Vol. V, Black's unstained tenor is the paint with which Wells fills the canvas on songs including four originals -- among them the beatific wordless chorale "Gradual Inclination" and the contrasting "So Much Power," an energetic stomp propelled by keyboard brass and drum machine -- and versions of songs from the musical Fiddler On The Roof and George and Ira Gershwin's Of Thee I Sing ("Sunrise, Sunset" and "Of Thee I Sing" respectively). As ever with Wells' work, whether under the NJTOS moniker or his own name (which typically appears alongside those of collaborators including Yo La Tengo, Jim O'Rourke, and Annette Peacock), the melodic and lyrical elements are embellished with jazz-accented piano, samples and keyboards, with minimal rhythmic accompaniment other than electronic percussion. Adding to the intrigue on Standards Vol. V are a new arrangement of the Scots/Irish ballad "I Know Where I'm Going" (from which Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger took the title of their 1945 film of the same name), an entirely new musical interpretation of "Sigh No More Ladies" from Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing and the album's appropriately named finale, "A Quiet Goodbye," with words by Aidan Moffat, Wells' partner on Everything's Getting Older (2011) -- winner of the inaugural Scottish Album Of The Year award -- and follow-up The Most Important Place In The World (2015).

Muddy Waters, Johnny Winter, and James Cotton, live at the Palladium, New York on March 4th, 1977. The result of his investment soon paid off, with the Hard Again tour combining the respected powerhouse of Waters and Winter joined by James Cotton, culminating in a further four albums being produced. Although this particular collaboration was short-lived, it has provided blues fans a rare opportunity to indulge in the work of two hugely important musical figures whose respect for each other is evidently unflinching. Two live albums, Muddy Mississippi Waters Live (1979) and the more recent Breakin' It Up, Breakin' It Down (2007), have allowed a glimpse of the concerts from 1977-1978. APARDE Hands Rest CD
Art has the power to mirror and capture its creator's surroundings and environment. Art can also reflect something much more personal by offering you a glimpse of the artist's mind. Hands Rest, the second studio album by German composer and musician Aparde, does both. While reflecting the essence of Berlin's club scene, in which Aparde undoubtedly is immersed in, the album also takes you to the depths of the musician himself, far from clubs and live sets, to a world that is both intimate and profound. Hands Rest, which was created over the span of one year, has a cathartic feel to it, "the process was very diffused in terms of time, because over the past year my life circumstances have been very complicated and often frustrating, and I had to motivate myself again and again." While he crafted the tracks, Aparde was in fact processing his own thoughts and feelings after the end of a long relationship, and listeners navigate through varying soundscapes that seem to accompany Aparde's own internal commotions as he himself navigated a turbulent year. But while pain, anger and melancholy can be felt in tracks, Hands Rest also contains moments of transcendental insight and "breakthroughs" that evoke comfort and acceptance. There is undoubtedly a lot of Aparde in the album, not only through what he hand-crafts on his analog equipment, but also through his own voice. Aparde's lyrics also expose a fragility that complements the harder electronic elements. In fact, it is the use of his voice in Hands Rest, in hushed and soft tones, that balances some of the more dance tracks with mellow and deeply intimate undertones, showing the progression of the artist from a club musician to something that lies beyond that environment too. The second half of the album certainly feels more thumping than the first, with repetitive beats of a faster tempo, but the choice of equipment accompanied by Aparde's voice warms up what could otherwise feel impersonal.

HOLT, JOHN 3000 Volts Of Holt CD
Kingston Sounds present a reissue of John Holt's 3000 Volts Of Holt, originally released in 1977. The 3000 Volts Of Holt album was the third in a series of records that launched John Holt into the UK charts in the 1970s. To say that every home had a copy of a 1000 Volts (1973) and many 2000 Volts Of Holt (1976) might be an overstatement, but it certainly felt that way, as all good radio stations and parties seemed to have these tracks on permanent rotation. 3000 Volts Of Holt was the more roots sounding of the three albums, but it still carried that sweetened string sound that set these recordings together. 3000 Volts also featured the first recordings that Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare played on together. Kingston Sounds get this version back out on the streets where it belongs, especially on vinyl so those new reggae blues parties can again spin some fine vintage John Holt magic... Sit back and enjoy... CD version includes six bonus tracks.

180 GS, THE Commercial Album CD
"The 180 Gs is a group of 5 singers (who also happen to be brothers) based in Detroit, Michigan and led by composer and multi-instrumentalist David Minnick. They have carved out their niche in the music world by creating new versions of severely iconoclastic albums of the 1980s and 1990s using only their voices. Their debut album is a collection of the works of sound collage artists Negativland. The album titled 180 d'Gs to the Future was released in 2008 on Negativland's label, Seeland Records. The 180 Gs second album is an a capella version of the British band Cardiacs' monumental 1995 double album Sing to God. This project took the group 4 years to complete. It was finally released in the summer of 2018 to critical acclaim. We are now happy to present their third album, a cover of the Residents seminal 1980 release: The Commercial Album: 40 distinct songs, 60 seconds each. Homer Flynn of The Cryptic Corporation says about it: 'The thing that's most impressive about album is that the Gs are not merely imitating the Residents' masterpiece of minimalism, but reinventing it, while staying completely faithful to the source material. Like the originators, the 180Gs are creating their own alternate musical universe, just as curious and original as that of The Residents.'"

David Murray leads on bass clarinet, managing to go both deep and soaringly high; it sometimes sounds like two different instruments are being played. Enzo found the Paninaro's fashion imagery and luxurious clothing translatable to today's social network dynamics and prime for the retro-futuristic dancefloors of today that are inspired by the golden days of Italo-disco. "Low Red" is an Italo-pop gem conceived with Quique Aldebaran and with Quique on vocals, taking inspiration from Suicide. "Aj Squinza" takes a classic '80s disco approach with sound-scaping synths that endlessly jam. PEPPERSTEIN/ILYA DMITRIEV, PAVEL The Future LP
Koo Editions comes on vinyl purposing a selected documentation from art exhibitions, interviews, intermedia collaborations. Koo Editions was born with the idea of using the vinyl medium as a moving exhibition space, referring to the relationship between certain experiences of visual art with the listening one. Why the record? Because the catalogs don't speak. The record is a place: "Where" in fact, deputy to the sound testimony of something that has already happened, can be preserved to be able to enjoy it from a distance (of time and/or space). The intent of Koo Editions is not to launch a precise style or a defined aesthetic, but to put the accent on the voice of peculiar and seminal attitudes linked to the world of visual art. The record introduces an inversion of focus, compared to what usually happens in artistic events where the eye and not the ear is the master. This is not a matter of sound art, vinyl art, net art or anything else: the medium is not the message, but conveys it. The first vinyl release on Koo Editions will feature Pavel Pepperstein's exhibition in the Russian pavilion of the Venice Biennale in 2009, which is now presented again here, ten years later. Since 2009 was the year of the centenary of the Futurist Manifesto, the thematic reference looks to the historical avant-garde: it is in fact a work of Russian retrofuturism and bold beauty. The recording is titled The Future and introduces a radical criticism for the Russian being. Its roots go back to the past experience gained by the author in the Inspection Medical Hermeneutics, a pioneering artists' collective formed in 1987 in a squat in Moscow during the years of Glasnost and Perestrojka. On the cover there is an image chosen from the paintings displayed in the exhibition. Inside there is an extended track of Ilya Dmitriev, a mixable retro electronic flow deliberately influenced by '80s disco archetype. Pepperstein's speech blows over the beat from the ultra-world and goes in an unexpected direction, far from any hedonistic exaltation, embracing a severe criticism of a future towards which he absolutely does not want to tend. The artist, of unquestionable fame and international value, takes strong positions against the western cultural narrative and art market policies which deserve to be slammed in the face of today's public. In "F22.0", waves of paranoia break over driving, asymmetric rhythms, offset by soothing, whispered vocals. "Kogn. Dissonanz" maintains the tension, making clever use of polyrhythms and blasts of machine gun fire. "Resilienz" sees warm oscillations cluster around a simple but effective groove, and the restrained cries of "Katharsis" close the EP with powerful intimacy. Self-taught and primarily a live performer, JakoJako makes extensive use of modular synthesis in her productions and on stage.

NAZARIO, ZE EDUARDO Poema Da Gota Serena LP
'Following on from Homenagem, Lugar Alto's first critically acclaimed project, the Sa?o Paulo label's new endeavour is the reissue of another neglected masterpiece. This time, it's Poema da Gota Serena turn by Ze? Eduardo Naza?rio from 1982. This unique work gathers elements of free jazz, Brazilian Northeastern rhythms, Asian percussive instruments and electronics. Ze? Eduardo is a virtuoso drummer and percussionist with a prolific career as a musician and teacher. He was introduced to music in his youth and started playing professionally at the age of thirteen. In the late 60's he was a regular at the famous Totem night club in Sa?o Paulo, where he performed alongside the pianist Teno?rio Jr. and other exceptional instrumentalists. It was there that he met Guilherme Franco, and together they formed the Grupo Experimental de Percussa?o. This period defined Naza?rio's interest in different sonorities involving percussion, and he broke away from the more traditional genres, such as bossa nova and jazz. Over time, this distinctiveness in sound and playing allowed him to create his own path which culminated in an extensive number of remarkable works, including the colorful and psychedelic 'Mandala', which examines Indian and hippie themes. He also played with Hermeto Pascoal's group and joined him and Jaques Morelenbaum for the recording of the cult classic 'Imyra, Tayra, Ypy' by Taiguara. For Egberto Gismonti's 'No? Caipira', Naza?rio performed with the khene, a mouth organ from Laos, a present from Gismonti himself. Each side of the album explores different duets which, with its suite formatted tracks, give the album the feel of a cohesive whole. The first half of the A side, 'Energia dos Tre?s Mundos', is shared with the improvised saxophone of Cacau. Naza?rio delves into free jazz rhythms and plays his drums with a rolling and tumbling swing, using the kit in full, demonstrating the power of Brazilian jazz fusion. The second half of the suite takes us into a more tranquil mode. 'So? Pra? Ouvir', demonstrates Ze?'s mastery on the glockenspiel, and Indian percussion instruments, such as the tabla and mridangam. Cacau, on his side, switches his saxophone for more delicate dancing flute driven passages, equal parts northeastern rhythms and deep Amazonian indigenous influences. The B side, with 'Pra? Pensar/Pra? Sentir e Pra? Contar', contrasts heavily with the A side's more organic and natural feel. In Pra? Pensar Lelo Naza?rios's synth clusters and electronic blasts strangely interact with the exploring, wandering percussion. This track leads into the sublime 'Pra? Sentir e Pra? Contar' where South Indian inspired vocals, performed by Ze? Eduardo, accompany the graceful synth chords and fluttering percussion. The result is a hypnotic, otherworldly feel to the music that is infectious and takes the listener on an extraordinary journey. With Poema da Gota Serena, it is possible to hear music that extrapolates the lines of the avant-garde and popular music. It is an album the demonstrates that Brazilian jazz fusion can be both spiritual and challenging at the same time. All the tracks were expertly remastered by Lelo Naza?rio, directly from the original tapes, maintaining the high quality of production that Lugar Alto are becoming renowned for. All the artwork was reinterpreted by the Sa?o Paulo design studio Sometimes Always, including an exclusive insert and unpublished images. It seems that Lugar Alto have managed to excavate yet another gem from the seemingly bottomless Brazilian mines. Long may they continue to do what they do so well.'"

CHLOE Endless Revisions Live LP
Musicians have a tendency not to stay in place. They have a need to stay in motion, to get lost (maybe in order to better find themselves), to step out of their comfort zone and produce their work into new forms, to turn a mirror to their output -- and stare into it themselves. These are, among others, the reasons that motivated the first live recording made of tracks from Endless Revisions (2017), Chloé's first LP since 2010 -- an album that saw the musician achieve a higher level in her creative prowess. A multi-faceted Pandora's box of mysterious drifts, the album is anchored by hits like "The Dawn" and "Recall". An artist who deliberately plays with labels, taking in contemporary and novel forms, boldly launching into experimentation (as demonstrated by her collaboration with percussionist Vassiléna Sérafimova), Chloé wanted to take the album's tracks and transform them in front of an audience by feeding them with new textures and inspirations. Performed over a year at events such as Nuits Sonores, Sónar, Mutek (in Montréal and Mexico), The Peacock Society, and festivals such as Marsatac, Musilac and, Colors of Ostrava, Endless Revisions' live performance has evolved with every show. It was out of the question to let these new versions -- replayed, recreated, and restructured alongside the evolution of the performance's very architecture -- fade away without a trace Chloé's prolific Lumière Noire label, in the wake of its first anniversary, had to produce a recording that bears witness to the work that these ephemeral creations represents. Slowly introduced by "Dune", then propeled by the impulse of "Because It's There", the mix is articulated around the appropriately titled "Outerspace", followed by "Party Moonster" and the bewitching "The Dawn", heard here in "clubbier" versions and adapted to a context in which the audience (whose enjoyment of the performance was audibly captured in the recordings), must be kept in suspense, as if carried away in a narrative. The set leads up to "Moonscape", an exclusive track created during the performance series, before the performance ends with a new version of "Sometimes", Chloé's relentless 2002 instant classic. At nearly 50 minutes, this recording is like a snapshot of a work's vital momentum, remaining faithful to the spirit of Chloé's Endless Revisions while detaching itself in order to conquer new territories.

DEVON & JAH BROTHERS Freedom Fighta CD
Freedom Fighter: a person who takes part in a resistance movement against an oppressive political or social establishment. Against a backdrop of political and social tensions deriving in large part from racial differences (highlighted by the immigration saga), Devon Miles and Jah Brothers launches their debut album Freedom Fighta. Fully convinced that music is a tool capable of reaching across divides and bridging the gap that threatens our humanity, the Italy based group led by Nigerian producer, singer/songwriter Devon Miles aims to send a powerful message to the masses of hope -- that a better world is possible if only we can unite in spite of our differences, of faith -- that together we can begin to see the good in humanity and work for instead of against each other and of love -- the only antidote to the poison of hate that so threatens our very own survival. A 13-track album, Freedom Fighta is not only a journey through various themes bordering on key social issues that plague our society today but also a rich buffet of sounds and genres in one big melting pot -- kind of like our world! Tracks like "Murderer", title track "Freedom Fighta", "The Journey", "Stand Up For Jah", and "Don't Cry" promise to leave the listener with an after taste tantamount to a sonic orgasm. With rhythms guaranteed to draw you into a cosmic vortex where the heart meets the mind in a perfect combination of groove and message, Freedom Fighta promises to be a pleasant discovery for music lovers all over the world.

PARTCH, HARRY And On The Seventh Day Petals Fell In Petaluma LP
Restocked. Performed by The Gate 5 Ensemble: Harry Partch (director), Danlee Mitchell, Harry Partch, Michael Ranta, Emil Richards, Wallace Snow, Stephen Tosh. Limited edition LP release (180 gram vinyl) with previously unpublished bonus tracks + free download card. "'In late 1962 Harry Partch returned to California and began a project that would not only become the bones of a masterwork, Delusion of the Fury, but have a life of its own. In a too-small space within an abandoned Petaluma chick hatchery, Partch gathered the instruments he had designed and built -- new and old -- eager to once again expand the boundaries of his compositional fabric. He learned each individual part as he composed, establishing that it could be played. And On The Seventh Day Petals Fell In Petaluma (1963-64, rev. 1966) was born of his exploration and assembled with that 'minimum of players' over a three-year period. In spite of rough conditions and meager resources Partch's dogged persistence, along with the efforts of his dedicated assistants, eventually succeeded in realizing the 34 verses of expanded duets. With this album we revisit an important work and turning-point, guided by the original 'Statement' Partch wrote for the first commercial release of the piece. Previously only excerpted, it is a voicing of his beliefs that transcends one project to illuminate an entire purpose. We also reprise exquisite notes by the late Bob Gilmore, who distills and explains the story of Petals so clearly and eloquently. No one wants a dead reissue, so by digging into the archives, I am pleased to offer hidden gems. First, The Petals Sessions is an aural glance into the cramped quarters of the recording space, as composer and players labor to bring new notes to life, Harry himself giving direction. The montage ends with a 'test take' by Danlee Mitchell and Michael Ranta that could have easily been a keeper! Finally, we present the original Verse 17. In 1964 Partch wrote two duets that used the Adapted Viola; by the time the piece was finished in 1967, he had excised them. The ending track -- never before released -- brings Harry back to life, playing and recording Adapted Viola for one of the last times. I was completely unaware of this recording until I examined the outtakes and it glows, fifty years on. That Petals ever came to be, like much of Partch's story, stands somewhere between determination and miracle.' --Jon Szanto, The Harry Partch Foundation"

AXELROD, DAVID Earth Rot LP
"Comes packaged in a gatefold jacket with a 28-page booklet. Earth Rot is visionary composer/arranger/producer David Axelrod's third album, and the last of his Capitol trilogy. Recorded as a concept album about the decrepit state of the environment in 1970 Los Angeles, and scheduled for release on the first Earth Day, it features choral vocals and marks a departure for Axelrod's signature sound, which would take on a jazzier feel in the 1970s. This definitive version of Earth Rot, overseen by Now-Again's Eothen Alapatt in conjunction with Axelrod's Estate, fulfills a request Axelrod made while alive -- to see the instrumentals of this album, never before released, issued. They see release here as the second half of a deluxe CD reissue. This is an audiophile reissue, with the vocal version transferred directly from Axelrod's original master tapes at Capitol Records by Ron McMaster. The master was approved by Axelrod's son Michael, who adapted ancient lyrics for the album in one of three collaborative projects he did with his father. Contains a 32 page booklet that delves into Axelrod's incredible life and music, replete with never before published photos and an interview. FAIRLIGHT, EMILY Mother of Gloom CD
Emily Fairlight has a proper folk singer's background: a teenage runaway adventurer in Australia and India, a circus school student who once sang naked at a burlesque night on a whim, a female-friendly pornography-free sex toy shop assistant, a barista, and a runner/jack-of-all-trades at a digital visual effects company. With its New Zealand rural Gothic/Texas borderlands feel, Mother of Gloom is an elusive creature. Ultimately, the prevalence of acoustic guitar and intimate sharing of lived experience through song suggest it is folk music or, as Fairlight self-deprecatingly calls it, "doom-folk". Her vocal style -- a powerful quivering vibrato and a stark, haunting tone, teak-hard yet soft as crushed velvet -- elicits comparisons to PJ Harvey, Bridget St John, Emmylou Harris, and Cat Power, musicians with distinctive voices and a lyrical ability to conjure a kind of experiential realism, although Mother of Gloom can also hold its own alongside the storytelling of Will Oldham and soundscapes of Calexico. Each song is a timelessly elegant, at times distressed, vignette, capturing the essence of a place, memory or feeling, framed by a diverse musical palette with space for the imagination left between the sounds. Fairlight lives in Dunedin and has been composing and performing for over a decade. She recorded Mother of Gloom with Doug Walseth at The Cat's Eye Studio in Austin, Texas on her third trip to the USA, aided by local musicians including Cully Symington (Bright Eyes, Okkervil River) and multi-instrumentalist Kullen Fuchs.

MARTYN Odds Against Us 12"
On Voids (OSTGUT 043CD/029LP, 2018), long-time Berghain/Panorama Bar resident Martyn returned to his deep, percussive roots, nimbly constructing webs of rhythm, space, and inventive basslines. On Odds Against Us, the producer projects the common denominator as a spirit of sampling innovated by drum 'n' bass, but which operates independent of BPM, as shown by the title track's floating, Havoc-like piano riff over minimal, mutant UKG and a snarling, amorphous bassline. "B.C. 2" drives full-on at 170 -- Detroit deepness through a London lens. "Rhythm Ritual" delivers on the title's promise, with layers of interlocking drums, melody, and chopped vocals.

GAYLE/JOHN EDWARDS/MARK SANDERS, CHARLES Seasons Changing 2CD
Charles Gayle is a saxophonist, pianist, sometimes a clown and radical musical performer wrapped into the body of a humble person living in Downtown Manhattan since the 1960s. As this set attests to, it is sometimes hard to predict what he will do on stage... In all his musical (and personal) life Charles Gayle has remained outside of any form of mainstream, carving his own singular path. There is no player on the scene today with the emotional wallop of Charles Gayle. John Edwards is a true virtuoso whose staggering range of techniques and boundless musical imagination have redefined the possibility of the double bass and dramatically expanded its role, whether playing solo or with others. Perpetually in demand, he has played with Sunny Murray, Derek Bailey, Joe McPhee, Peter Brötzmann, Mulatu Astatke, and many others. Ubiquitous, diverse and constantly creative, drummer Mark Sanders has worked with a host of renowned musicians including Derek Bailey, Henry Grimes, Mathew Shipp, Roswell Rudd, in duo and quartets with Wadada Leo Smith and trios with Sirone and William Parker. Here OTOroku present a double-CD set documenting the two very special sets delivered on November 15th, 2017 at Cafe Oto, Dalston, London. In classic ecstatic fashion one would expect from these three stalwarts of blazing transcendence, these two sets swerve from the sublime to the this is an exquisite document of one of the most exciting trios operating today. COXHILL/JOE MCPHEE/CHRIS CORSANO/EVAN PARKER, LOL Tree Dancing CD
This recording from the earlier years of Cafe Oto documents the impossible pairing of four contemporary giants. It's the reason the venue opened in the first place, for miraculous one-off groupings like this. "The magic of the first minutes -- an alto solo by Joe McPhee of true purity -- soft-spoken, masterful and accomplished -- brought back to mind the blissful Coleman/Haden duet last year at the Royal Festival Hall. 'Ornette gave me freedom to move in a certain way,' said McPhee. He searched hesitantly and carefully for his words, all the more surprising from such an articulate musical (or, as he might say 'muse-ical') practitioner and campaigner. Coleman's 80th birthday coincided with McPhee's stint at Cafe Oto. McPhee and his co-musicians delivered an intense performance which was both creative and restrained. With Evan Parker's tenor in tow -- a collaboration going back to the late '70s -- and Lol Coxhill, sitting with head bowed intently, a soprano master -- it could have gone anywhere, yet they worked off each other, often in the higher registers, building up almost bird-call like interactions and trills. Earlier, Chris Corsano's drumming presented a dense bedrock for McPhee to play against, and his solo spell was a crisp exercise in sonic curiosity. McPhee picked up his soprano mid-way through the second set, heightening the lyricism of the three saxophones. Then, being a devotee of Don Cherry, he switched to pocket trumpet, allowing him to interject, and punctuate the concentrated sound layers built up by the quartet, and lead the music out through a different door." --Geoff Winston, London Jazz News. Recorded March 10th 2010, this is also a document of the only time Lol Coxhill and Joe McPhee shared the stage. The recording is a little rough, but hey, so was your birth! Mini gatefold sleeve; edition of 500.

CLARKE, MARY Take Me I'm Yours 12"
2019 repress. "While being a rare Patrick Adams and Billy Nichols production, Mary Clark's 'Take Me I'm Yours' has in recent years become one of the most celebrated Disco tracks by contemporary Deejays. This borderline Gospel-Disco Gem has all the elements of a timeless Disco Cut; a driving bass line, powerfully arranged strings and horns, but most importantly, a very soulful performance by Mary Clark. Like many of Peter Brown's 'affliate' labels, little is known about them or the artists recorded. Originaly released in 1980 on 'La Shawn', it is rumored to have been no more than 200 records originally pressed, making this one of the most sought 12 inches among collectors. However Leave it to someone like Dimitri from Paris who edited and included 'Take me I'm Yours' on his The Kings Of Disco compilation from 2004 to give this virtually unknown song a new life and a whole new audience. Even as recently as last year, Mary Clark's song of 'devotion' made its way into a BBC Radio 1's Essential Mix, courtesy of Floating Points, and frankly, there's probably not a bigger audience than that."

LENA ANDERSSON Soder Malarstrand CD
Lena Andersson is a fictional character created by Berlin-based Japanese artist Kyoka and Irish producer Eomac. Both met in 2016 during a residency at the Stockholm EMS studios. The initial spark of their collaboration was a joint session on the studio's Buchla system, quickly expanding to multiple other sound sources and instruments. During the improvisations, a call-and-response working principle emerged immediately which joins the special talents of both musicians. Kyoka's free and experimental approach forms part of the source material that is contrasted with Eomac's skillful editing; unconventional reflections face a driving force. From Kyoka's extensive field recording collection, an arabesque of disturbing vocal fragments arises that is set against Eomac's hard rhythmic framework, as in "Das Tier", for instance. "37 Years Later" or "Mystic" live on a vivid texture that has been condensed directly at the mixing console into a kind of dramaturgical capturing of the moment. The immediacy of the collaboration forms the basis for a synergy of the individual production techniques. A strategy that lacks neither absolute creative freedom nor an awareness of musical function. Söder Mälarstrand thus captures an intuitive cooperation between the two producers, which also refers back to the place of origin through its dialogical, moment-related production principle. The album title is a tribute to the Stockholm studios where the project began. "Middle of Everywhere" features Seiki and Mike Watt.

OCTA PUSH Lingua LP
Octa Push's Língua will be released as limited edition vinyl on Rebel Up Records for the first time since its original release in 2016 on the band's Combatentes home label. Octa Push is a Portuguese duo formed by brothers Leo Leoleo and Mushug that fuses Lusophone music (Angola, Bissau, Brazil, Cape Verde, Mozambique, Portugal, Sao Tomé) with electronic sounds. Língua is the second full-length album of Octa Push and features guests such as Tó Trips (Dead Combo), Batida, Cachupa Psicadélica, Cátia Sá (Guta Naki), Maria João Grancha, Ary (Blasted Mechanism), João Gomes (Orelha Negra, Fogo Fogo), Braima Galissa, Alex (Terrakota), AF Diaphra, and Gospel Collective, among others. The record, almost entirely in the Portuguese language, is a tribute to the Lusophone music that has been made in the last 40 years. Electronic music meets semba, morna, funaná, Afrohouse, and even Brazilian music. The record opens with the title song "Língua", rhythmically inspired by semba, it features the sharp vocals of Cátia Sá, the hypnotic kora of Braima Galissá, and the guitar of Alex from Terrakota. In "Cueca", Maria João imposes all of her vocal expressiveness on top of a heavy bassline and shows why she's one of the biggest Portuguese jazz references. In the same heavy bass tone, "Trips Makakas" introduces the Portuguese guitar of Tó Trips from Dead Combo into a dense electronic sound. "Gaia Cósmica" has hints of Brazilian grooves, featuring the guitar and deep vocals of Cape Verdean pop legend Cachupa Psicadélica, and also funky keys provided by João Gomes, member of bands like Fogo Fogo, Orelha Negra, and cult band Cool Hipnoise. The rhythm increases in "Fogo", in this funaná inspired song, Kenyan Isaac Anyanga and Cátia Sá provide the vocal hook while Alex Terrakota shows his amazing guitar skills, newcomer AD2 raps about the Cape Verdean island of Fogo. "Xilofone Teteté" is a xylophone driven electronic track, while Mana is the Afrohouse approach by the duo together with kuduro rapper Bruno do Show. In Barbara the rhythmic energy balances with moments of calm and it's where Cátia Sá's vocals shine the most. It also features Batida, Alex Terrakota, and Ary. "LGS-LX" has Nigerian talents Afrologic and Temi collaborating with rapper AF Diaphra. The closing track is a heavenly cover of a song by the Portuguese icon Zeca Afonso and features the Gospel Collective. Includes download.

TROPIKAL CAMEL Awakening Spirits LP
Berlin based, Jerusalem pioneer Roi Assayag, aka Tropikal Camel, serves up his fantastic new album, Awakening Spirits on Brussels based label Rebel Up Records, distilling 20 years of musical experience. The album title Awakening Spirits is a wordplay: in Hebrew & Arabic, winds, spirits, and ghosts are the same word: Ruaah. This title is polysemic: spirits are representing the mystic research that is eternal, winds are representing drama and conflict, ghosts are the voices from the past... the word awakening symbolizes the future. Makom in Hebrew, Maqam in Arabic, which means "place" but is also the name of the melodic system of Arabic music, theory which Roi Assayag has taught himself from YouTube tutorials, trying to deepen his connection with the melodies that opened his soul. In those quarter tones he found the drama that he is so connected to. One that is making him feel home. As Tropikal Camel he casts a spell over audiences from Europe to Africa through the Middle East by blending percussion with a psychedelic edge at places like Nuits Sonores and Nyege Nyege. It is a sound that draws on his Middle Eastern and North African heritage and heads into the future. In the artist's unique way, he fuses elements into a special blend of driven bass, deep pads, and chopped chants for a musical journey that continues on this spellbinding new offering. Deeply moving opener "Deja Groove" immediately sinks you into an enchanting world of percussive flurries and weightless beats, a ballad of longing to a lost love, was written in dark times with a glimmer of hope. "The Spirits" is a sparse and intoxicating brew of churning drums and Syrian Sufi chanting, influenced by music of Aleppo in Syria. Sufi music has a mystic quality, opening the heart and cleansing the soul. This track is in Maqam Sabah, a modus that is representing youth and the process of maturity. "Waves" is a loose and languid mix of lurching grooves, traditional percussion and edgy synth drones that trap you in a trance. The pressure then builds again with the clattering drums and hits of "Zachotronic". The excellent "Beeehave" slips into darker, almost techno leaning territory. It's about being wild, not giving a fuck, in a club in Berlin, high! "Seashells" mixes all of the above into an electrifying trip through world sounds that brings plenty of new influences to the dancefloor.

ELECTRIC MOON/TERMINAL CHEESECAKE In Search Of Highs Volume 3 LP
The In Search Of Highs series of split artist releases continues onto volume three. Electric Moon, the German psychedelic space rock trio formed in 2009 by Sula Bassana, Komet Lulu, and Pablo Carneval, are a much loved trio on the underground psych scene. Their vinyl releases sell out almost instantly. On their side of this split, the band take the basis of a live recording from Berlin in 2018 and tweak it into what it is now, an epic near 22-minute "Beacon Light Hereafter". Another stunning addition to the bands vast back catalog. London's Terminal Cheesecake formed way back in 1988, quickly establishing themselves as a legendary underground band releasing numerous well received albums and the support of John Peel amongst others. The band, like many of the era eventually burned out before remerging in 2013 with a new line-up. Terminal Cheesecake circa 2019, featuring Russ Smith, Horseloaf Horseloafson, Neil Von Fish, Dave Cochrane, Johnny J Beat, released the album Le Sacre Du Lièvre in 2019. Their contribution here is two songs long "Fake Loop" and "Song For John Part 2", baked in fuzz and swirling distortion. It's a totally different type of high from the Electric Moon side. Whereas the latter go on a spaced-out cosmic trip, the Cheesecake side is more of an earthy, dark but equally glorious ride. Edition of 300; Includes download code.

COOPER, MIKE Rayon Hula LP
Room40 offer a re-mastered, re-edited 2019 version of Rayon Hula, originally released in 2004. From Mike Cooper: "After several trips, beginning in 1994, to the Pacific and its Island Nations, Australia and subsequently to South East Asia, I conceived the idea of making an updated more 'now' version of some of the Exotica music that originated in 1950's America. Arthur Lyman and Martin Denny were the two I mostly had in mind at the time, but I didn't want it to sound like them and the two words 'Ambient' and 'Electronic' had to figure large. I was deeply influenced by the ambience of the places I was visiting (Australian birds are scarily creative) and lo-fi electronics were something I had been working with in my free improvisation gigs since the '80s . . . No-one was issuing recorded work by me, so I started my own DIY cd.r. label, Hipshot, and sold them via the internet. I was free to record whatever I wanted and I did, starting in 1999 with Kiribati . . . The summer of 2004 house sitting in Palombara, 40 minutes outside of Rome, at our friend Jo Campbell's house, in the company of several dogs and numerous cats, I set to work outside in the shed with a Zoom Sampletrack ST-224, two mini disc recorders and a Tascam four track cassette machine; a pile of Arthur Lyman and Martin Denny CDs and my lap steel. My intention was to create a kind of music that I had hoped to hear when we visited Hawaii in the early '90s (some kind of Hawaiian Futurism maybe?) which we never did. Rayon Hula appeared from the shed and was initially released as Hipshot c.d.r. HIP-007. I submitted it to the Ars Electronica awards in Austria and was very surprised when it received some kind of a prize. I think that David Toop had something to do with that, as he was on the jury (thanks David). It was picked up by Cabin Records, a new label initiated by Pete Fowler and Graham Erickson and released as a double 10-inch vinyl set . . . Although the idea was an homage to Arthur Lyman, it was also an homage to Steve Feld who introduced me to the concept of 'lift up over sounding' in his book Sound and Sentiment, a study of the Kaluli people of Papua and their relationship with their aural environment. From it I gleaned, among other things, the idea of looped sounds played simultaneously but out of sync. An idea which had in fact guided me from the beginning of the series."

AMINI, SIAVASH Serus LP
Iranian composer Siavash Amini creates an ode to night; literal and metaphorical. Using textural electronics and post classical arrangements, he asks you to dwell in the "dark" of sound and forgo the sensory certainty of light. From Siavash: "The Idea of this album, when I first started drafting it, was to continue what struck me as very interesting yet simple idea; night. I became interested in different definitions of what night is, our perception of it and what night means physically to us as well as symbolically. I came across the idea of 'other night' described by Maurice Blanchot, during my research. It started me recognizing night as something we experience as 'the night of sleep'; it is night that we resist in sleep, by way of dreaming. Things became more interesting for me during many nights of not sleeping and intoxication, and an eventual nervous breakdown. This experience, culminating in me spending three days in ICU, gave me pause to think about Blanchot's words. Slipping in and out of consciousness my mind, which had already experienced a blurring of what one might call the 'other night' and the night itself, by being in half sleep most of the time. I felt myself far away from all my surroundings and at the same time being very attentive to some details in the objects around me. It was as if my body and mind where in an in-between state. I can only describe this as being distant or more precisely being in the dark. Objects and people showed themselves out of proportion and mostly dim. A feeling to describe this sensation, the word for which I only came across later, is Serus. There was a sense of repetition and familiarity in some feelings and emotions that I had towards some objects like sensing I knew them but not exactly from where or when. It was as if my body was resisting sleep and my sleepy mind was resisting being awake, only to dream of another type of the world that I could be awake in." Personnel: Nima Aghiani - violin; Pouya Pour-Amin - electric double-bass. Artwork and visuals by Tereza Bart??ková.

WEDDING PRESENT, THE Tommy 30 LP+CD
LP version. Includes CD. George Best became The Wedding Present's first album in 1988. But Tommy, released one year later, was made up of the early songs from the singles and radio sessions that had catapulted them from being bedsit musicians into indie darlings: "Go Out And Get 'Em, Boy!" with its purposefully super-fast guitars, "You Should Always Keep In Touch With Your Friends" an anthem for those long time Wedding Present fans, "My Favourite Dress" the only single in the collection that ended up on George Best, the classic, fraught tale of losing one's first love that perfectly played on the heart strings and began David Gedge's legacy of understanding everyone's heartbreak. Tommy 30, a brand-new re-recording of Tommy, did not come about simply as a "follow on" to George Best 30 (SCOPITONE 074CD, 2017). The band felt, during a Tommy 30th anniversary concert tour, that the songs had grown and evolved. Enter a more confident vocalist... an altogether growlier guitar. A bigger sound. The urgency of a 25-year-old Gedge is replaced with a charming vocalist with years of experience. Everything's warmer and, maybe, gentler... but in a satisfying way. It's like your old friends have come home to see you.

This rather mysterious jazz recording, which dates back to 1971, was quickly put together in a studio session sandwiched between RAI orchestra rehearsals, film soundtrack recordings, and various other projects that make up this incredible musical library, all recorded in that period by the best musicians. The unique particulars of this record are that the musicians are not named, except for a mythical Plakoti but also the rights and the tapes seemed to have strangely disappeared. After a period of accurate research, thanks to Maurizio Majorana (bass player for the Marc 4), the label has been able to find the original recordings and also the musicians that played on it. Even though this recording was accredited to the Marc 4, by semi-official sources of the time, strangely enough only two of them are effectively present on this record Antonello Vannucchi on the Hammond organ, vibraphone, and piano and Roberto Podio on the drums. The other two musicians are Giovanni Tommaso playing his mythical "Pedrazzini" double bass who already played together with Vannucchi as part of the famous Lucca Quartet and then as the bass player of the group Perigeo and Enzo Grillini, part of the Rai Orchestra and a favorite guitar player of both Armando Trovajoli and Gianni Ferrio who, at the time, was considered one of the best Italian jazz guitar player. The style of this record is very jazzy and sounds reminiscent of the jazz organ tunes from the Verve/Blue Note labels made in the '60s. The Seven Men Label, another characteristic of this new edition, born from a partnership of seven mysterious producers and musicians in order to produce background music, in fact, only produced four recordings and they are : 1 presented here, 2, aka Il Cinghialetto directed by Gianni Ferrio and played by the very best popular and classical musicians of the day, as the soundtrack of a theater piece written by Grazia Deledda and to conclude there are two recordings made in the 1970s written by Bruno Canfora: Musiche di scena n°1 and Musiche di scena n°2.

KESZLER, ELI Stadium 2LP
2019 repress. Double LP version, in reverse board-printed inners and double-width spine jacket. New York-based artist Eli Keszler is at the apex of his career. This year alone he's had a solo exhibition in the UK, performed with Laurel Halo, collaborated with author László Krasznahorkai, taught experimental composition and performance in the Pyrenees, and toured with Oneohtrix Point Never. Stadium is his new album for Shelter Press. As his ninth solo record, Stadium reflects his move from Brooklyn to Manhattan, where he produced the album. The constant motion and ever-changing landscapes of the island helped him modify and shape his sound into a new kind of film noir. There is a startling amount of expression at play on each track, where intersections of melody, restraint and rhythm are used to challenge the idea of memory, impression and space. Keszler is often mistaken for an electronic musician, but in fact his sounds are raw and natural, produced by hand. His performance with drumset and acoustic percussion are central to his work. He produces almost impossible textures through self-realized methodologies: cascading melodies, a shadow of voices, and a unique pointillist materiality. Although playing with the intensity of digitally-created music, his communications are done live with no processing; this is what gives Stadium its depth and warmth. On Stadium, Keszler uses lived experience to realize the most wide-ranging sound he's created to date, drawing out textures from overlapping geographies and transforming these recordings into starting points for composition. He then builds on these environments to create subliminal spaces for his music, which is pushed to new levels with string and brass arrangements. Is this the "stadium" referred to in the title: a larger network of sound and bodies moving continually, oscillating and turning in on itself? Keszler has explored these ideas before with notable projects such as his Manhattan Bridge installation Archway (2015) Stadium takes these long-running ideas to new depths. Keszler states: "The recordings on Stadium are inverted. They are landscapes scaled for the singular, like a mass collecting in one arena, this music compresses city spaces, genre and instrumentalism into an amorphous form. On the record, there are ruptures of information and happenstance. Like a game, it could go any number of ways."

ATKINSON, FELICIA The Flower And The Vessel CD
French poet and ASMR auteur Félicia Atkinson has frequently fixated on the elusive interwoven relationship between microcosms and macrocosms -- how even the quietest creative act ripples outward, a whisper with no fixed meaning. The Flower And The Vessel pursues this notion in a more literal fashion, as it was crafted while pregnant on tour. She describes it as "a record not about being pregnant but a record made with pregnancy." Each day and night, finding herself far from home, she asked herself "What am I doing here? How can I connect myself to the world?" The answer gradually revealed itself: "With small gestures: recording my voice, recording birds, a simple melody." In truth there is nothing simple about The Flower And The Vessel. The album's 11 songs span whispering textures, opaque moods, and surreal spoken word, leading the listener through a mirrored hall of beguiling mirages. Atkinson cites a trio of French classical compositions from her childhood as formative influences: Ravel's L'enfant Et Les Sortilèges, Debussy's La Mer, and Satie's Gymnopédies. There's certainly a shade of classicism woven within these tracks; melancholic piano motifs repeat then retreat into a radiant frost of shivering frequencies; processed voices recite cut-up poems and interviews over delay-refracted Rhodes and Wurlitzer; iPad gamelan patterns flutter from meditative to melancholic and back again, offset by pointillist patches of delicate software synesthesia. Much of Atkinson's discography is shaped by speech and the lyricism of language, but The Flower And The Vessel ventures further into silence. Field recordings from Tasmania and the Mojave Desert murmur beneath hushed reverberations of gong, vibraphone, and marimba, softly processed into an elegant emptiness, alternately eerie and serene. Her mode of minimalism has long been one of reduction, riddles, and curation, but here Atkinson's synergy feels close to apotheosis, emotive but ambivalent, a ceremony of expectation and invisible forces. The 19-minute closing collaboration with SUNN O))) guitarist Stephen O'Malley, "Des Pierres," is one of the album's few pieces tracked in a proper studio, but it broods and burns with the same subliminal majesty as the rest of The Flower And The Vessel: an ember in amber, seeds planted in shifting sands. Original artwork by Julien Carreyn, mastered by Rashad Becker at Dubplates and Mastering.

HARMOGRAPH/MATTEO SCAIOLI Ambienti Elettroacustici CD
Harmograph is a project by and with Matteo Scaioli. Matteo Scaioli summarized his latest research on sound by building various electromechanical instruments, one of which he called the "Harmograph", which gives the name to his whole project. Harmograph is basically a gong remodeled with a unique sound. Scaioli blends the sound of the Harmograph with other self-made instruments including Melodon's Voice, Phonograph Tape, Dhin "Tan" Pathè, and finally his favorite synth: the Prophet 5. Matteo Scaioli -- being a percussionist in the end -- built the Dhin "Tan" Pathé, a percussive instrument inspired by the Indian Mridangam, conceived and built starting from a 78rpm Pathè Bakelite disc of the early 1900s, where Scaioli assembles records in bakelite prepared by him creating rhythms and unpredictable sounds. The artisan dimension of the project is a further step in the continuous personal invention of sound machines and in the search of obsolete instruments, combined with contemporary electronic feel.

TRALALA BLIP Eat My Codes If Your Light Falls LP
Tralala Blip are an Australian unit of differently-abled musicians hailing from the Northern Rivers of New South Wales. Over the past decade they have carved out a unique position in the Australian electronic music community. Working to overcome a range of challenges imposed by their disabilities, Tralala Blip have created a range of approaches to instruments, performance, and composition that allows them to seamlessly create music together. Eat My Codes If Your Light Falls is their first full-length album in over five years. It charts out an entirely new sonic universe that is the resolution of several years of intense live performance and expanded studio experiments. Produced by Lawrence English, the record explodes their working methodologies and reveals a collective sacred heart that is fueled by their intoxicating post-electro pop melodies and diarized lyrical poems. Eat My Codes If Your Light Falls is in many ways the first work in a new chapter of what Tralala Blip are becoming. It resolves their experimental practices and focuses that energy within a tight framework of explicit song form and entirely personal production aesthetics. This is their voice, articulating their stories. It's for you to listen and begin to understand that which lies in parallel with our everyday. Beyond their extensive performance commitments, they have presented their work as special guests of TEDx, have had a stage production created about them and have instigated many workshops for other differently-abled musicians and artists. Their goal is to reconsider the nature of creativity, especially music making and to push these processes beyond any sense of the normative or commonplace. Celebrated internationally for their relentless pursuit of a level playing field in music creation, they have been fortunate to be supported by festivals such as Unsound, Liquid Architecture, and arts facilities such as ZKM Kahlsruhe. The future is expansive and multi-abled, Tralala Blip invite you to get amongst it. Tralala Blip are Mathew Daymond, Lydian Dunbar, Zac Mifsud, Randy Reimann, and Phoebe Rose.

JTC's EP is packed, but still playfully ambiguous; a club-ready set built to max out mixing boards with spacious and nuanced melodies and motorized percussion. On the first track, "Innerloire Rendezvous", a dense square kick plows through a brisk four-on-the-floor routine phasing over harmonious synth stacks of rubbery fifths and sevenths. The title track splatters a lenticular static spray between thumping kick, billowy melodic swells, and staticky clicks, snaps, and claps. Tadd Mullinix's distilled musical vocabulary, developed by his many years in the game, gives the set a misty-eyed quality without compromising its contemporary merit.

STEREO TOTAL Ah! Quel Cinema! CD
Stereo Total -- Ah! Quel Cinéma! An album title with not one, but two exclamation marks, meaning something akin to "what a palaver" as it primes the listener for songs like "Cinemascope". Themes such as personal injuries ("Ich Bin Cool"), betrayal ("Mes Copines"), personality deficiencies brought on by drug abuse ("Methedrine"), rage ("Hass-Satellit"), inflated opinions of oneself ("Brezel Says"), suicide ("Le Spleen"), grief ("Dancing With A Memory"), and souls in torment ("Elektroschocktherapie") are presented in widescreen format in and often in the most entertaining fashion. Stereo Total's penchant for wordplay is not in evidence in all of the lyrics on this record. Many tracks here echo the rather more somber, desperate songs she wrote for her first band Les Lolitas. Nevertheless, the anarchic humor which can be associated with Stereo Total resurfaces on compositions like "Keine Musik" and "Einfach". Musically, this Stereo Total disc, their twelfth, cannot be readily aligned with anything at all. If earlier albums resonated with influences from chanson, trash, or disco to punk, rock'n'roll and NDW (German New Wave), Stereo Total have now arrived in their very own musical universe which pays no heed to stylistic devices, reminiscent of "rien de tout". Brezel Göring draws on his favored array of instruments more likely to be found in the hands of children in households where a musical education is not on the agenda: plastic baby organ and dreadful mouse piano, accompanied by home-made guitars glued together by less than gifted artisans. Stereo Total continue to make electronic music with flea market Casio sounds which fly in the face of what is generally accepted to be electronic music. Each musical instrument could probably be translated into social coordinates and in this sense, the tools of Stereo Total's trade speak an unequivocal language. Stereo Total continue to play lo-fi garage rock music which makes a mockery of all the masculine clichés associated with guitars. When Françoise Cactus plays the drums, the rhythms of feminism, anti-professionalism and subversive dilettantism come to the fore. Any attempts to pigeonhole Stereo Total. The group began making music before the internet existed, before the Euro, before Germany reunited and before there were even bands or music. They will probably still be playing when all that has been consigned to the dustbin of history. When they began making music together, they made it their mission to disrupt rules, to destabilize ideas. They may not have thrown European harmonic structure or 4/4 time out of the window, but they have certainly asked questions of every other aspect of musical and lyrical techniques.

2019 repress on white vinyl, originally released 2007. "Dinosaur L is an alias donned by Arthur Russell, a man whose contribution to dance music from the late seventies and through the eighties was formidable but only quietly acknowledged. His innovative and left field dance records were way ahead of what people were used to hearing at the time. He was a cellist who studied classical and Indian music. As well as his great strides in dance music he was also involved in the New York downtown avant-garde music scene and produced some albums in a more avant-garde/experimental vein as well as trying his own unique approach to pop. He scored several hits on the underground New York dance scene at clubs like The Paradise Garage (Larry Levan was a huge supporter). His biggest tunes, 'Go Bang!' and 'Is It All Over My Face?' were worldwide club hits and are still played today as classics. His records have influenced the scene from his first dance record in 1979 to the present day and his work has been much sampled. Sadly Arthur died in 1992, but his music lives on and his influence is still felt on the dance music scene, his tunes still sound great and are still moving many dancers around the world, so his spirit lives on. Sleeping Bag Records and Traffic Entertainment Group is proud to present Dinosaur L's 24->24 Music for the first time ever on double LP. TRASH KIT Horizon CD
Trash Kit are Rachel Aggs (guitar, vocals), Rachel Horwood (drums, vocals), and Gill Partington (bass). Three deeply creative individuals who play in a multitude of other groups including Bas Jan, Sacred Paws, Shopping, and Bamboo. Although Trash Kit have their forebears in bands like Sleater-Kinney, The Ex, and The Raincoats, their sound is still very much their own take on facing forwards and relies as much on the naturalism of an internalized folk music as on their sincerity of vision. For Horizon, carefully crafted through years of playing out live, the band have chased down the distance between what they wanted the record to sound like and its realization. They've augmented these songs with choral arrangements, piano, saxophone, harp, viola, and cello. Horizon finds itself full of themes, especially the notion of looking to the future. "Coasting", which opens the album, is concerned with "the end of the world and also the afterlife" and was written after Aggs read The Parable of the Sower (1993) by the Afro futurist sci-fi writer Octavia Butler, a novel set in an apocalyptic California and featuring a protagonist in search of change and renewal. "Sunset" draws on similar themes of ending and salvation, and proves equally ruminative. "Dislocate" on the other hand is an upbeat sprint of spinning guitar and piano riffs showcasing both Rachels's overlapping vocal magnetism. "Horizon" is a sleeping giant of a title track, forever reaching out and intensifying throughout its lively five-minute lesson in reinforcement. "Every Second" was written in the aftershock of Trash Kit's tour with The Ex on their big convoy anniversary tour. "See Through" sounds pointed and surly, urging you to "transcend, break down" outdated categories and patterns of thought that only restrict. Partington's bassline plummets heavily to hammer this home, making it one of the most affecting songs from the album. Meanwhile "Get Out of Bed" deals with "being an overachiever and the struggle to overcome self-doubt, get motivated, never feeling like you've done enough" Aggs admits. A strong undercurrent throughout Horizon concerns itself with the freeing up of power to make your own definitions, in this case how you can decide what truly makes you feel like you've achieved something.

NORMIL HAWAIIANS What's Going On LP
LP version. Glossy, printed gatefold sleeve; offset (matte) paper inner sleeve; includes booklet; Edition of 500. Upset The Rhythm present a reissue of Normil Hawaiians' What's Going On?, originally released in 1984. To Normil Hawaiians, getting out of lockstep with Thatcherism seemed imperative. Adding to an overriding sense of anxiety, close friend and band associate Martin Pawson took his life in July 1983. Following More Wealth Than Money, released on Illuminated Records in 1982, there was an impetus to make good on hard won achievements. Rehearsal and writing sessions resumed in the early months of 1983 at Intergalactic Arts Studios. IGA was a ramshackle, semi-residential rehearsal space. Illuminated Records had been sending artists to Foel Studios in Powys, Wales for years, and it had become a kind of refuge for the Hawaiians. Studio owner/manager Dave Anderson (Hawkwind/Amon Düül II) was welcoming, unruffled, and accommodating when around a dozen band members, friends, and family emerged from the "mini-peace convoy" of vehicles into the hazy, pastoral care of the warm, Welsh countryside. Whereas More Wealth Than Money had evolved in the recording studio, What's Going On began to develop as a more pre-meditated, albeit piecemeal work. "Quiet Village" and the unreleased "Outpost" had already been finished at Foel in February 1983. Recording Engineer Brian Snelling recalls how the Hawaiians approach to making the album was unconventional and spontaneous, reveling in chance and openness. Rehearsal tapes from IGA were played along to, and improvisations allowed to develop, with further layers of sound accreting (as can be heard on "Big Lies"). "Free Tibet" was created by the band playing together exploratively with Snelling waiting to hit "Record" until he heard that something interesting was coalescing. He recalls the sessions being initially unorthodox, but eventually settling into a friendly, productive, and very familial affair. Mixed tapes were then taken by Dave Andersen and Guy Smith to Charly Records' editing studio in London. Here they spliced the recordings into an irregular yet coherent, flowing work. Final masters were then EQ'd and cut by Graeme Durham at the newly opened Exchange Mastering Studios in Camden. And then nothing happened. Unbeknownst to the band, Illuminated Records were getting into deep financial problems. The label gave the band 250 copies, but the record shops wouldn't touch them -- the company had been blacklisted. This intricate, challenging and engaging work had been failed by poor circumstance.

"Drawn For Days" pulls the EP to a close, a sedate, melodic ponderance of strummy guitar, jangling bells, and Amy and Xanthe's soft-sung vocals.

RITA, THE The Nylons of Laura Antonelli 4CD BOX
Ten years after its first release in an eight-cassette box in 2009, The Rita's masterpiece The Nylon of Laura Antonelli is reissued on Urashima. Comes in a black wooden box with laser engraving that includes four-CD wallet with full color artwork, original 2009 insert, a foldable color poster, and a certificate numbered in 300 copies."Here we have The Nylons of Laura Antonelli, a multi-item release by The Rita, Sam McKinlay. The version you have here is its third issue. This release is the sound of different models of nylon for legs used according to Sam's own purposes. If filled with a spirit of non-literalism, what is 'Laura Antonelli'? Forward movement-wise I think of it as a series of inhibitors of varying volume. You can conceive of silence being the underlying reality on this release, and it allows you to feel each cell of the nylon fabric for what it is, which is basically a player in an offensive line guarding the object, the leg. Each sound could be received as a tiny scrum with the mic or the hand and the nylon. The dimension (paradoxically) is added by the flatness of the nylon. What in forward movement is received as a struggle along tiny cells is properly interpreted when considering both forward movement and thickness of contact as a rappel against the flatness of the nylon. It's each of these things at once continually for the length of the release. It's perfect. The sound and duration are perfect. It's impossible to stop thinking about the paradox I described. Everything I said in the last two paragraphs is everything I feel about The Nylons of Laura Antonelli, excepting the content of this paragraph. When something is perfect and there is a finite amount to say, that's what you say, and this paragraph, where I describe the recordings as being perfect, is also necessary, and terminal. Sound work is unique and necessary and it provides a result that is affectively different from everything else." --Gabrielle Losoncy, 2019

VOMIR Black Box 6CD BOX
Vomir announces the cover box, with laser engraving on black wood, who is the best HNW artist around. HNW stands Harsh Noise Wall, better known as Wall of Noise, and Vomir is Romain Perrot, who's best known for his habit of wearing a black bag over his head when playing live. Six solid CDs that comes with a wooden box, which resolutely occupy a narrow and strictly defined dynamic band, with shifting textures of distortion and heavy low end. In retrospect it's surprising it's taken noise artists this long to notice the appeal of stasis -- its ear-fooling potential amplifies minor structural changes and renders small sound events disproportionately large, as well as allowing them to generate a genre variant which is both intensively aggressive and strangely calming. Nothing is progress. Everything repeats itself endlessly and nothing stands out as important. Nothing more should be undertaken. We will never arrive at the final destination. The truth is over, comes the loneliness. These are definitive new CDs of total static harsh noise, crusting, crushing, crackling of 75 minutes each by the master of the HNW Romain Perrot. No ideas, no changes, no development, no entertainment, and no remorse. Urashima continue the tribute of the genre with more than seven-and-a-half hours of monolithic HNW on six-CD set with an astonishing black wooden box. Each single CD comes in black wallet with no graphics plus individually numbered certificate in 200 copies and foldable color poster with picture and text in French and English.

PERU NEGRO Peru Negro LP
Vampisoul present a reissue of Perú Negro's self-titled album, sub-titled Gran Premio Del Festival Hispanoamericano De La Danza Y La Cancion, originally released in 1973. Afro-Peruvian music, also known as "música criolla", finds its roots in West African music, Spanish, and European genres and native musical traditions from Peru. Flamenco-influenced sounds sit next to African tribal elements and a simple yet effective percussion instrument called cajón. After a long struggle to preserve música criolla through oral tradition over generations, actually resulting in much of the original music being lost, a renewed interest in those rhythms and melodies arose in the 1950s. Some years later the legendary Peruvian singer Chabuca Granda provided help to promote Perú Negro, a dance company that also incorporated percussion combined with música criolla. Ronaldo Campos, "Lalo" Izquierdo, Víctor Padilla, Rodolfo Arteaga, and Caitro Soto, among others, played a key role in the foundation and early days of the company. Their shows celebrated and recreated black culture in Peru and they quickly became regulars at Lima's theaters. In 1969 they won the main award at the Festival Hispanoamericano de la Danza y la Canción in Argentina. The repertoire performed at the festival was later included in this album, originally released in 1973 in Peru and Spain only. The lyrics and music of these songs reflect the country's multicultural diversity, blending elements from the African tradition and echoes of Spanish-influenced melodies around stories of slavery days, rural labor, and folklore. Although lesser known than music from other nearby countries, Peru Negro's recordings are reminiscent of Afro-Colombian or Afro-Cuban rhythms. If you have an interest in Cuban son or Colombian bambuco, this record will be an essential addition to your collection and the perfect introduction to the fascinating música criolla. Presented in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180 gram vinyl.

OS SEIS EM PONTO Os Seis Em Ponto LP
Vampisoul present a reissue of Os Seis Em Ponto's self-titled album, originally released in 1964. Francis Hime has been a fundamental artist of Brazilian music since the mid-1960s. He began to play the piano when he was only six years old and in 1963 he started working with Vinicius de Moraes, with whom he would compose many songs. For example, "Sem Mais Adeus", included in Os Seis Em Ponto, his first album as part of the band of the same name, released in 1964 on the prestigious RGE label. Hime's rhythmic piano swings between bossa and jazz along the entire record, with the typical groove of the then emerging Brazilian sound and the characteristic arrangements and solos of the American jazz genre. The complexity of the instrumentation present on the album already anticipates what would be the pianist's later career as arranger and director of orchestras. But the instrumental depth does not diminish the infectious groove of many of the tracks on the album, a wonderful repertoire by such solid composers as Carlos Lyra, Roberto Menescal, or Castro Neves, as well as absolute legends like Vinicius, Jobim, or Edu Lobo. Os Seis Em Ponto is a representative record from the time of its making: the golden age of bossa jazz, full of sweet and luminous melodies, but also of energetic moments in which Francis Hime's piano receives the brilliant backing of the flute and the trombone, or the effective guitar of Nelson Motta. Despite the young age of the whole band, their instrumental skills are beyond any doubt and this is proven by the masterful performances not only of the many classics contained in the album but also of Hime's original compositions. Among the most notable cuts on the LP are "Mar Azul", "Se Você Pensar", "Sem Mais Adeus", "A Paz De Um Homem So", "Amor A Êsmo", and 'Borandá'. Presented in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180 gram vinyl.

HACKNEY COLLIERY BAND Collaborations: Volume One CD
After the success of their critically-acclaimed third album Sharpener (HCB 001CD/002LP, 2016), which reached #3 in the jazz charts and #14 in the independent music charts, London's brass juggernauts Hackney Colliery Band blaze back onto the scene with their first collaborative album, ushering in a whole new era for the band. Featuring collaborations with a host of key names in jazz and world music including amongst others the father of Ethio-jazz Mulatu Astatke, British jazz funk legend James Taylor, trombonist Dennis Rollins, UK saxophonist Pete Wareham, and Beninese singer-songwriter and Grammy Award-winner Angélique Kidjo, Hackney Colliery Band have effortlessly transformed their explosive live energy into 11 original recordings that push the groove and form in an accomplished manner. On Collaborations: Volume One, writers Steve Pretty, Olly Blackman, and Luke Christie have between them penned the outfit's most dynamic material to date. "Mm Mm'" (featuring Angélique Kidjo and Roundhouse Choir) merges Beninese grooves with wah pedal trumpet textures, and the rousing call-and-response between Kidjo's soaring vocal and the exhilarating choir adds a richness and depth to the composition. On "Snowfire", innovative Norwegian pianist Bugge Wesseltoft brings a Euro/nu-jazz feel, while Dennis "Funkybone" Rollins adds his trademark virtuoso trombone to the carnival-flavored "Ricochet". There's an energy, respect for tradition, and the exuberance of London in Hackney Colliery Band's work, best exemplified in the downright thrilling James Taylor collaboration "Hypothetical". "Netsanet" featuring Mulatu Astatke is a deep exploration of Mulatu's trademark Ethio-jazz, while "Crushing Lactic", composed by Tom Rogerson (fresh from a recent Brian Eno collaboration) has a frenzied flow, with big horns and driving rhythm section. Elsewhere, Pete Wareham (stalwart of the London jazz revival) lends his free-flowing sax to "What's Gone Before", leading you into a powerful communion of jazz and brass as Mulatu Astatke's "Derashe" takes the listener down a vibrating rhythmic path while accompanied by blasts of horns and Mulatu's trademark vibraphone. Two spoken word compositions ("Why Yellow" and "Climbing Up My Own Life Until I Die") featuring York-born writer and comedian Rob Auton lend an introspective voice.

NIVHEK After Its Own Death / Walking In A Spiral Towards The House 2LP
Double LP version. "Opaque assemblages of Mellotron, guitar, field recordings, tapes and broken FX pedals by Pacific Northwest artist Liz Harris, created during and after two contrasting residencies in the Azores, Portugal and Murmansk, Russia and combined with pieces made at home in Astoria, Oregon. The collection's unique dual design functions as a forked path, existing independently of one another but with roots intertwined. She cites her score for HYPNOSIS DISPLAY as a compositional reference point, inspired by 'interior mnemonic device landscapes' and 'curiosity around a sadness.' In pacing, palette and poignancy, these sides rank among Harris' most stark, primordial work: fragile, feverish, ominous and otherworldly. She describes this music as 'a requiem, a ritual, to unlock and release feelings,' a sense of shadowy masses, moving backwards, in spirals, massive doorways opening chaotic forces, 'a toxic concentrated reduction of something much darker bubbling beneath.' Her artistry for mapping richly detailed inner worlds is nowhere more expressive and enigmatic, vibrations and voices gliding dimly out of the void, 'wraithlike and ethereal, their existence in the mist questionable.' Initially released in a private edition that vanished almost as quickly as it was announced, After Its Own Death / Walking In A Spiral Towards The House is presented here in a beautiful second edition on Superior Viaduct's imprint W.25TH."

GROSSI BLEND 3, ANDREA Lubok CD
Andrea Grossi is a young and extremely talented double bass player and Blend 3 is his trio, featuring alto sax player Manuel Calliumi and guitarist Michele Bonifati. The group explores the diverse sound aspects of a trio format that, without a preconceived set, utilizes composition and improvisation as its only resources. This is some sort of chamber jazz where each sound controls its own development to remain suspended and constantly communicative. Nonetheless, sudden nervous and electric transgressions sometimes burst abruptly.

LUCAS, TED Ted Lucas LP
Restocked. Ted Lucas, the sole published album by singer-songwriter and master guitarist Ted Lucas has achieved an almost mystical reputation amongst aficionados and collectors. Ted Lucas is a seamless marriage of moody odes and raga-style instrumentals regarded by many to be, simply put, the greatest private press folk/psych album ever recorded. Lucas was a fixture in the Detroit rock scene of the sixties and seventies. His first band, The Spike Drivers, relocated to San Francisco to become one of the very first true psych bands, the Motor City's answer to Jefferson Airplane and The Byrds. Following that band's collapse, Lucas returned to Detroit and paid bills doing session work with Motown. And there he recorded, in 1972, the demo for Warner Brothers which would become Ted Lucas, released in two private editions in 1975 and known informally to friends and family as "The OM Album", after Lucas' own label. The album was released with artwork by the legendary Stanley Mouse originally created for Jimi Hendrix. A troubled figure whose lack of commercial capitalization and general disgust with the music business fueled a tragic narrative of self-destruction and an untimely death at 53, Lucas nevertheless reflects a regal confidence on this album, both in terms of his Sandy Bull-level guitar workouts and his masterful songwriting, as reflected in covers by the Blind Boys of Alabama, Richard Buckner, Phil Cook, and Father John Misty. As singular as Skip Spence's Oar (1969), as liminal and uncanny as David Crosby's If I Could Only Remember My Name (1971), Ted Lucas is a collection of elevated and elegiac cosmic folk music, presented here in a newly re-mastered edition from the original tapes with high-quality tip-on sleeves and the original back cover art.
