JOYCE Joyce LP
Alternative Fox present a reissue of Joyce, originally released in 1968. The Brazilian singer-songwriter and guitarist Joyce Silveira Moreno was born and raised in the middle of Copacabana, a short beach stroll from the epicentre of the bossa nova universe. Her father was a Dane that had settled in Brazil, but she was raised by her mother and step- father in a typical Portuguese-Brazilian household. Since her older brother was friendly with leading lights of the bossa nova movement such as Roberto Menescal and Eumir Deodato, she was steeped in the form at an early age and witnessed its key evolution first-hand. At the age of 16 in 1964, she was taken to the studio by Menescal to contribute to the coveted debut album by the mythical group Sambacana, assembled to record the work of composer Pacífico Mascarenhas when the meagre budget would not allow the vocalists he preferred. Knowing that a full-time career in music was certainly not guaranteed, she began studying journalism in 1967, shortly before her controversial song "Me Disseram" reached the finals of Rio's second International Song Competition. The following year, her self-titled debut album was released by Philips, produced by Armando Pittigliani, with orchestration by Dorival Caymmi and arrangements by Gaya; along with her own compositions, the album also featured songs by her rising-star friends, including Caetano Veloso and Marcos Valle.

NEW YORK CONTEMPORARY FIVE, THE Live at Koncertsal, Copenhagen, 17.10.1963 LP
New York Contemporary Five: Live at Koncertsal, Copenhagen, 17.10.1963. The short-lived quintet known as the New York Contemporary Five had a lasting impact on the free jazz movement. It was formed in 1962 with trumpeter Don Cherry, who had been working with free jazz pioneer Ornette Coleman; tenor saxophonist Archie Shepp, who'd been working with Cecil Taylor, Gil Evans, and more recently, Bill Dixon; Danish alto saxophonist John Tchicai (whose father was Congolese), a former member of the quintet assembled by the poet and filmmaker Jorgen Leth, who moved to New York shortly before the Contemporary Five's formation; acoustic bassist Don Moore, who had played with Shepp and Dixon; and drummer JC Moses, who had played with Clifford Jordan and trumpeter Kenny Dorham. This rare performance, given at Copenhagen's Koncertsal on October 17, 1963, has epically-extended cuts of Don Cherry's "Consequences" and Ornette Coleman's "Emotions", plus a peppy take of Thelonious Monk's "Monk's Mood".

JARRETT, KEITH Live at Sendai Jazz Festival, Denryoku Hall, Japan, 20.10.1986 LP
Keith Jarrett: Live at Sendai Jazz Festival, Den-Ryoku Hall, Japan, 20.10.1986. The gifted American pianist Keith Jarrett is one of the jazz world's greatest musicians. Born in suburban Allentown, Pennsylvania in 1948 with a mixed European cultural heritage, Jarrett was a child prodigy that played piano at the age of two, appeared on television, aged five, and gave his first classical recital, aged seven. After studying at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, he moved to New York in 1964 to perform at the Village Vanguard and then joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. Drummer Jack DeJohnette subsequently brought him into the Charles Lloyd Quartet, resulting in European tours, and when that group disbanded in 1968, Jarrett began fronting his own trio with bassist Charlie Hayden and drummer Paul Motian, and also began longstanding collaboration with Miles Davis, helping to shape noteworthy releases such as Live/Evil. From 1983, Jarrett's trio featured DeJohnette and former Albert Ayler collaborator Gary Peacock on bass, that version of the trio being the musicians featured on this beautiful concert staged at the Sendai Jazz Festival in 1986. Along with a sensitive rendition of showtune and Miles anthem "Stella By Starlite", highlights include a driving cut of Paul Desmond's "Late Lament" and a moving take of "I Remember Clifford", Art Blakey's memorial to trumpeter Clifford Brown.

WILLIAMS, MARY LOU Black Christ Of The Andes LP
Alternative Fox present a reissue of Mary Lou Williams's Black Christ Of The Andes, originally released in 1965. Pianist and composer Mary Lou Williams played with nearly every major jazz performer during her long, illustrious, and varied career, in addition to recording many solo works. Born Mary Winn in Atlanta in 1910 and raised in a "shotgun shack", where local musicians gathered to jam, she played by ear from a tender age and learned the boogie-woogie style upon moving to Pittsburgh with her older sister Mamie. While still in high school, Williams toured with the Theatre Owners' Booking Association, bringing her into the orbit of Earl Hines, Louis Armstrong, and blues singer, Irene Scruggs, among others; later, based in Kansas City during the 1930s, she began composing and recording solo work. After a stint at the Cotton Club, she formed a combo in Pittsburgh that featured Art Blakey, but was soon recruited by Duke Ellington and once back in New York, began jamming with Thelonious Monk and Charlie Christian at bop hotbed, Minton's Playhouse. Art Tatum, Count Basie -- you name it, she played with them! Black Christ Of The Andes is easily one of the most individual albums created by Williams, or anyone else in jazz, for that matter; recorded in New York in late 1963 and first issued on Williams's own Mary Records, the album has jazz explorations of divine concepts, delivered with suitably complex arrangements; "Anima Christi" and "Praise The Lord" both feature soaring assembly by Melba Liston, "The Devil" and the title track have elaborate choral voices from the Howard Roberts Singers, and instrumentals such as "Miss D. D." and "A Fungus Amungus" use her expert piano skills to shock, titillate and provide light relief.

YARRA, RIVER Frogmania 12"
River Yarra very logically turns his back to rotting humanity and pays tribute to our next of kin, frogs. "Toad Charmer" is a seductive sarabande to bewitch frogs. "AMFYBYONZZ" is all about trance-y synths, orchestral hits, and amphibian gimmicks. "Frogz Ov Gondwana" channels the particles of MDMA you may have absorbed into the right corner of your brain with its wild arpeggiators and synthetic howling. Finally, it's time for Frogmania's anthem, "Prog Frog", an up-tempo ballad through time and space.

SUN RA Media Dreams LP
All the material on Media Dreams comes from live performances from January 1978, when Sun Ra was in Italy with a quartet -- Michael Ray, John Gilmore, and Luqman Ali -- making recordings for Aldo Sinesio and the Horo label. The trip also included concerts in Rome, Milan and elsewhere; these produced enough recorded material for several Saturn albums, including Media Dream. The exact dates are uncertain; all the musicians were present in Rome as early as January 2nd, when they recorded New Steps (1978) for Horo; they were still in Italy on January 23rd, when a concert in Milan resulted in the Saturn LP Disco 3000 (1978) (COSMO 111LP). These recordings, of which Media Dream is a great example, feature an instrument newly added to Sun Ra's arsenal: the Crumar Mainman. It's a rare keyboard, probably made in small numbers by Crumar, which manufactured synths from the late 1960s until 1984. Martin O'Cuthbert also played the Mainman -- he uses it on several recordings from 1979 and 1980: it's described in that context as a "string synthesizer." After that, it seems to disappear from view. It was reportedly the first keyboard to provide preprogrammed beats -- Sun Ra certainly uses that feature on Media Dream. The album opens with Sun Ra building dark organ tonalities at the start of "Saturn Research," creating an ominous barrage in the lower register, while Ali contributes a subdued accompaniment. Ra's is an orchestral concept here, a depiction of an ominous, portentous scene. Unlike some of his other explorations in this musical territory the piece is not developed here into a large-scale structure, but presented as a short sketch, satisfying and complete in itself. Applause separates it from the next track on the album: these are two pieces were clearly played one after the other in concert. As "Constellation" gets under way after the applause, Sun Ra lightens the mood, laying down rhythmic patterns with the Mainman, Ray's is the first musical statement over the top of these. Ra adds other keyboard layers above the rhythm to take the music in a different direction. There's almost a hint of minimalism as performed by others here, but the way Sun Ra bends and deconstructs the mechanical patterns are all his own. In their original context, these Italian concert recordings served to document Sun Ra's musical activity; his music was a cosmic newspaper, he once said.

MORELLI, RON Man Walks The Earth LP
L.I.E.S. Records founder Ron Morelli departs the club to investigate atavistic ambient themes in his fourth solo LP and debut for the Paris-based Collapsing Market. For the first time on record, Morelli mostly mutes his drum track channels and allows his sounds to freely float in imagined air. In the process he crisply reveals a latent, introspective side to his music that's been missing or occluded by noise in his clutch of grubby sores issued by Hospital Productions since 2013 -- back when he changed his address from Brooklyn, NYC to the heart of the Parisian electronic music scene. As such the eight bony diffusions of Man Walks The Earth mark distance travelled from the gobs of 2013's Spit (HOS 407CD/LP), documenting a change of mindset from grizzled and paranoid to a more soberly contemplative and drily poetic expression of self. Composed during 2015-2018, the eight liminal zones of Man Walks The Earth see Morelli switch out immediacy and brashness for a more considered long view of electronic music. In key with his previous work it's a regression of sorts, but this time reaching back beyond industrial music to a primordial sound recalling Tod Dockstader dabbling at the GRM in "A Long Walk At Night", or Laurie Spiegel glimpsing unseen worlds in "Stone Tools", while album opener "Fear Upon Seeing His Reflection In The Lake" hearkens back to Delia Derbyshire and Daphne Oram's etheric, Radiophonic abstractions, and the parting beauty "The Sun Beats Stronger As Each Day Passes" recalls the enigmatic appeal of Chris Marker's sci-fi soundtrack for La Jetée (1962) as much as Jeff Mills' recent astral excursions. Following Collapsing Market's archival issue of Iranian classical music, iridescent electronics by Ssaliva, and the amorphous environments of Metta World Peace's Zanclean, Morelli's new album presents a compelling perspective on the binds between socio-economics and cultural aesthetics that's reflected in the LP's sleeve art, Morelli's own photo taken from the 86th floor of One World Trade Center, New York, detached and reframed by Ethan Assouline, characterizing the basic human will to rebuild, only to destroy again.

WILD BILLY CHILDISH & CTMF Last Punk Standing CD
"'You're the One I Idolise': This is a love song, along the lines of some of the ballads we used to do in the Milkshakes -- inspired by Arthur Alexander. There also seems to be some Richard Hell in there (the Voidoids have been a big inspiration over the years (I saw them supporting the Clash at Hastings Pier Pavilion in '77. 'Like an Inexplicable Wheel': The strangest thing in life is time, not clocks but that there was a past and there will be a future (apparently). Life seems to be an inexplicable wheel, and I thought there should be a pop song (or two) about that. 'Last Punk Standing': A more CTMF sounding track. This should really be called 'Who'll be the Last Punk Standing?' but it looked better as a shortened title. Again it's about time, and knowledge running out. When a generation passes there's no one left to explain the true nature of their experience, eg. those who fought in WW2 are all but gone and that's how we get the rise of the new right: we learn from history that we don't learn from history. Who'll be left to pass on the essence of what punk was about -- home-made, please yourself music. PS: the character Roberta, is from a Leadbelly tune -- I thought it nice to have her and Mark E. DJ Python, aka New York based producer Brian Piñeyro, makes his Dekmantel debut. "Lampara" snakes and twists, like a rugged '90s London broken-beat, electronic exploration, evoking nostalgic feelings a la Boards of Canada. The retro aesthetic flows through with "Tímbrame", where the tropical reggaeton percussion floats through wafty, deep synth melodies. "Cuando" steps it up a gear, as the digital percussive rhythms go into overdrive, while "Espero" goes all Gaussian, by offering a transportive, meditative expression. "Be Si To" chops-and-cuts-and-slices across a sleuth of Warping, proto-drones. "pq cq" is a singular question mark about darkness, feeling, and trans-dimensional thinking.

REVENGE, THE Roar Groove Meets Dirt Crew Vol. 4 LP
For Dirt Crew's fourth installment of the Roar Groove meets Dirt Crew series, the label presents a new set of shimmering and dubbed-out The Revenge cuts. After the last episode, Graeme has been very busy working his "live" studio setup to come up with a whole range of new jams of which the label has selected four tracks. Dirt Crew think these tunes best represent his unique style and once you hear these in a club you instantly know "That's a Revenge Tune", something the label have always loved about his sound. The opening "Like an Ending" is a trippy, melancholic-euphoric track driven by a Moog Voyager bass line and classic house keys and vibe. The original recording was an 11 minute live take that he has been able to capture the essence off and narrow it down to this thumping club jam. "Work Out Right" is all about those good times and it's reminiscent of early '90s "French Touch", filtering house at its best, it keeps running around in your head and with its slower pace, sure to do especially well on the early morning dancefloors and high summer, sun-drenched beaches. On the other side you enter darker and more dubbed-out territories. Here is "We Have So Much We Can Gain" in Graeme's words: "This one had been knocking around for a couple of years in various forms, but it wasn't really until I stripped it all back and let the arpeggiated synth do its thing that it really seemed to gel. It's really the rhythm of the whole thing, I ended up scrapping extra hi-hats and stuff that was just getting in the way." And how can you not love that marimba?! This track is like a spaceship floating the skies and eventually touching down. To close out this new work, you have one of these typical stab-y Revenge chuggers, loose and floating, synth lines underlaid by a distinctive beat, it has kind of a breakbeat feel to it and with the improvising on those synths and melodies on top of it all it's a true dub house track.

This work led him to be co-writer and background vocalist on JC Brooks's Red, Black and Blue EP (2018) and featured vocalist on visionary composer and flutist Nicole Mitchell's Mandorla Awakening II: Emerging Worlds (FPE Records, 2017), which was named #1 jazz album of the year in the New York Times and placed in the top 5 of the NPR Jazz Critics Poll. As a composer and producer he marinates social commentary in gospel, blues and funk to create a salty concoction he calls sousefunk. His band, de deacon board, channels Gil Scott Heron, Parliament and Curtis Mayfield, building on sounds of the past to chart a course for poetry and music through our rocky present. BRIX & THE EXTRICATED Breaking State LP
Brix & The Extricated return with Breaking State, on which they have pushed the sonic boundaries set by their debut, Part 2 (2017). While retaining much of what was loved about Part 2, this record demonstrates musical muscle and rapid growth of artistic intent. While the sonic thread of their time in The Fall is still clearly evident, there are many surprises and unexpected corners throughout Breaking State. This album is packed with seriously infectious choruses and killer guitar work. Each of the ten songs is rifled with the gut-wrenching power chords, driving riffs and technical dexterity of Jason Brown's guitar contrasted against the delicate beauty of Steve Trafford's moody, atmospheric, transportative soundscapes. Transparent purple vinyl.

PRURIENT Pleasure Ground 2LP
Restocked, last copies. One of Prurient's most captivating raids on the borderlands of power noise and symphonic doom rears its furious head once again for this gatefold reissue on Hospital Productions, ten years on from its original release on double tape and then as a single vinyl pressing for the legendary Load Records in 2007. Pleasure Ground stands as a key part of Prurient's golden quadrant alongside The History Of Aids (2002), Black Vase (2005) and Cocaine Death (HOS 232CD/HOS 410LP, 2008), its immolating rage renders Ian Dominick Fernow at an early crest of his energies, consolidating the hi-pitch intensity and bile of his idols, Whitehouse, with the majestic, meditative inspirations of black metal and a more personalized bloodlust for unheimlich synth tones and pulsating electronic undercurrents. Its four long tracks are riven with the paradoxes that make Prurient's music so compelling and practically a genre unto itself, meting out a sound in "Earthworks / Buried In Secret" that's simultaneously nerve-gnawing yet bleakly tender, or weighing up caustic harshness with a melodic vulnerability in "Apple Tree Victim" that appeals far beyond the bombed-out no-man's land of pure noise to intersect with the entrails of EBM in the raging but poised thunder of "Military Road" - one of his finest moments, bar none - and cold-wave pop and fetishistic synth themes in "Outdoorsman / Indestructible". If you're willing to bite down, you will find a depth of bittersweet flavor submerged beneath the tidal waves of white noise filled with nuance and vulnerability, slowly dragging you into the abyss. Ultimately though, there's no mistaking that in the end Pleasure Ground is just unflinchingly fucking heavy. Housed in a deluxe, reverse-board gatefold sleeve. Mastered and cut by Barry Grint at Alechemy.

If the genres intelligent dance music (IDM) and Berlin school seem to be the most obvious way to present his compositions, they're not sufficient to describe the variety of this album La Terre Invisible as it also contains industrial or classical inspirations. ZERO Ain't That Mayhem? CD
The Lyon band's recent collaborations with Virginie Despentes and Béatrice Dalle put them in the spotlight they deserved but this is just the latest chapter of a story started when they were young more than 25 years ago by Eric Aldéa and the drummer Franck Laurino. In the Deity Guns (89-93) and Bästard (93-98) and in a handful of albums (including productions by Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth or Andy Briant of Tortoise), they were simply the pioneers of post-rock in France. And yet the chapter that arrives today almost resembles the "debut album" of a young band shot through with a fiery and insatiable desire to take on the world. A complex, distressing and oppressive world which is nonetheless rich in its very confusion. "Isn't it all a bit of a mess?" seems to be suggested by the title of this new album Ain't That Mayhem and its striking post-apocalyptic graphic art. There are no limits and who cares what tools, sounds, and instruments are used... There is trombone on the insistent instrumental "We Blew It" and even a kind of liturgical organ at the end of "Five Vs Six". The whole album catches hold of you with its hypnotic layering ("Deranged", "Myself As A Fool"), a chorus in unstable equilibrium ("Fake From The Start"), an unstoppable rhythm ("Marathon Woman", "Walking Force"), a singular tone of voice (the almost blues-like "Alligator Wine" borrowed from Screamin' Jay Hawkins), a guitar riff as simple as a tree that hides the forest of variations, advancing from behind to play with neurons and sensations ("Recife, 1974"). Just like the old manor that serves as a backdrop to this record, you might wonder how it all remains standing.

ENSEMBLE 0 Elpmas (Moondog) Revisited CD
In 1991, aged 75, Moondog was about to embrace his singular identity, somewhere between druid, mad scientist, and young child. Having left the beaten track well before, and broken down barriers between musical genres, the ancient moderne Moondog was about to push paradox and anachronism even further and create the cult concept-album Elpmas. Elpmas is at once a satire of technology, music that takes its pulse from Native American pow-wows and cleverly composed pop music. Made with state-of-the-art computers, it is a manifesto against the atrocities inflicted on indigenous people. It is also an ode to Nature and an invitation to travel, themes that are still as immensely popular today. In order to perform and revisit Elpmas, Ensemble 0 and their guests have had to explore the 247 pages of the record's score. The original was mostly recorded note by note, but here the musicians play their parts simultaneously, as one would any classical score. Every sound has been meticulously re-recorded and some of the parts have been rearranged so that they could be played by instruments, and avoid digital treatment, other than the final summing of the tracks. The cold digital feel of the original has been counterbalanced by the analog warmth we have wanted to breathe into it.

EXTENDED ORGAN Vibe LP
Important Records announces Vibe, the new LP from Extended Organ, the Los Angeles-based quintet associated with the Los Angeles Free Music Society (LAFMS). Vibe, Extended Organ's first full-length studio LP since 2000's XOXO was recorded in April 2016 by members Joe Potts, Fredrik Nilsen, Paul McCarthy, Tom Recchion, and Alex Stevens. The album consists of two side-long tracks, "Hate" and "Vibe", recorded live at LACM Studio in Pasadena, California by acclaimed engineer André Knecht. On Vibe, the band employs prepared piano, junk percussion, Joe Potts' Chopped Optigan, electric guitar, voice, Rheem organ, various electronics, and homemade instruments. Each track is improvised, then assembled and edited without overdubbing in studio. The music moves with velocity and direction revealing surprises at every turn. The resulting sound is ominous, humorous, harmonious, chaotic, and at times quietly erotic. This is abstractly powerful music. The highly provocative cover image, created collaboratively by Joe Potts, Fredrik Nilsen, and Tom Recchion, is shrouded inside a unique laser-cut outer sleeve. Like the music contained within, the cover reveal is a beguiling experience in and of itself. This intriguing package was art directed and designed by Tom Recchion.Formed in 1994, Extended Organ produces a dynamic otherworldly ambience which can be simultaneously hilarious and frightening. Joe Potts lays down a carpet of sound using and his self-engineered drone instrument, the "Chopped Optigan", over which Paul McCarthy performs vocal and guitar improvisations channeled and processed by Alex Stevens. Alex also adds his own keyboard triggered synthesized sounds. Tom Recchion, renowned as an inventor of homemade instruments, a free improviser, and an accomplished composer of acoustic, electronic and tape music, performs an array of sounds folding lush beauty and horror sensibility into the matrix. Fredrik Nilsen plays an antique Rheem Mark 7 organ along with electronic sound and recordings created by Mike Kelley. Kelley was a member of the group from 2000 until his death in 2012 and continues to be a contributing member by virtue of sound recordings he provided before his death; "In case I can't make a gig, I can still play." The LAFMS formed in the early 1970s around a loosely knit group of like-minded musical improvising sound experimenters in eastern Los Angeles who discovered their mutual interest and banded together to design modes of self-production and distribution of recordings and publications, helping to develop and propel the DIY movement.

CFM Soundtrack To An Empty Room CD
"Charles Moothart is releasing his third album under the moniker CFM. It's called Soundtrack To An Empty Room and keeps it cookin' off 2016's Still Life Of Citrus And Slime and 2017's Dichotomy Desaturated. Moothart is a frequent contributor on many of Ty Segall's solo ventures but also as a co-conspirator in bands like the blazing jam unit Fuzz, and a fantastic monster of a group called GØGGS, which throws Segall and Moothart in with Chris Shaw of Ex-Cult. Something that's immediately apparent on this album is that it's a harder record than its predecessors. The shift isn't subtle but it is tremendously cool. A lot of the material was written while Moothart was on tour with Segall and working on the GØGGS Pre Strike Sweep album. The first two CFM efforts gave Moothart the experience to work effectively on his own in the studio, the live shows infuse this with the confidence and attitude that comes from a lot of nights playing where there are no second takes. It is an exciting follow up and further proof that Moothart is one of those people with a lot of music in him."

YOUNG MARCO Bahasa LP
In 2014, Young Marco traveled to the islands of Indonesia, visiting several islands within the archipelago including Bali. The voyage was on invitation by Island Of The Gods Records; allowing Marco to immerse himself in the Indigenous culture that still exists in Indonesia. For Marco it was also a look back to his Indonesian roots, with his late grandfather born and raised in Indonesia. The brief was to capture the spirit, ambience, and atmosphere of the islands as part of the labels "Island Explorer" album series. The project embodies the "east meets west" approach the label has become known for in regards to cultures colliding. A respectful collaboration between local musicians who have played to their gods, unchanged in thousands of years alongside Marco's contemporary expression. They are connected only through the universal language of sound and a mutual willingness to collaborate and experiment. A number of sessions were arranged -- recording Gamelan, gong, and bamboo musicians from nearby temples. Island instruments and organic sounds meeting Marcos drum machines and synthesizers in a number of improvised jam sessions. Field recordings were also gathered from jungles, oceans, and streets, capturing both the ambient and chaotic side of life in Indonesia. These sounds and recordings were taken back into Marco's Amsterdam studio and re interpreted into the Bahasa album -- a sonic expression that captures the mood and atmosphere of the islands through the eyes and ears of Young Marco. Almost five years after the trip, the project is now available!

Philipp Otterbach has been around for a while, publishing records at Grokenberger and Tour Messier Records. Although he is now based in Berlin, Philipp was one of the first residents of the famous Salon des Amateurs in Düsseldorf. His productions sound like floating in the unruly waves of life, reflecting its flow and resistance. Otherworldly beauty is conveyed through cinematic, pulsating soundscapes, where contextually sampled and poly-rhythmically designed, electronic percussion generates impulsive rhythms. The Rest Is Bliss conjures up the stillness of dawn, where fog shrouds a pristine forest far away from civilization.

DARK STAR Cryonics: 1989-1992 2LP
Deep-frozen for many decades, something is on the verge of being released from obscurity. Dark Star is the project of Wolfgang Reffert. In the late '80s through the early '90s he released a couple of albums that invoke the darkness of infinite space. Clearly influenced by '60s and '70s sci-fi, the mechanical grooves and spiraling synths bring to mind the worlds of Alien (1979), The Forbidden Planet (1956), and Solaris (1972). Utilizing a less-is-more aesthetic, Dark Star breathtakingly soundtracked space travel to far-away galaxies like no other. Rhythmic post-punk drums lay the foundation for slow, down-tuned space rock that goes deep into industrial proto-techno-like territory, while always maintaining a sense of groove. Resurrected from the days of yesteryear, Dark Star once again re-imagines the eternal harshness and emptiness surrounding spaceship Earth. Cyborgs, extraterrestrials and genetically modified creatures rejoice on the dance floor! Cryonics: 1989-1992 is a collection of Dark Star's best material, originally released on two cassettes and one CD. Mastered by Wouter Brandenburg. Photography by Rogier Houwen. Poetry by Alex Deforce.

YOUNG, NATHANIEL Accosting Form, Pure Intent LP
Accosting Form, Pure Intent, Nathaniel Young's new album for Mysteries of the Deep, is a contradiction that makes sense. At once raw and elegant, it emerges from a place of constraint and desire. Its individual tracks reflect this paradox as the album unlocks itself like a koan: a riddle that, once solved, dawns on the listener like an epiphany. Metallic emanations in "Communal Dysphoria" and "Comfort in Form", interpolated with echo and reverb, arise from the void and disappear back into it, moving like scattered precipitation over rugged, rhythmic terrain. Certain tracks speak to certain influences: in "Extrasolar" and "May I Speak Candidly", drone is tempered by synth pads and wistful ambience. "Zion Waits for No One" brings to mind a sense of the Chthonic: a dark, primitive creature submerged. A monster from the loch that at times breaks through the still, watery surface. Despite the assorted elements at work, a visceral quality binds everything together. Even the record's more subdued works are textured and tangible, at times balancing or playing against the serrated edges of its more structured pieces. Like all compelling works, the sounds here exist in a liminal space that is not entirely classifiable. Still, it is wholly cohesive in both its moodiness and its adeptness. Nathaniel Young has released on Umor Rex, Blankstairs, Phinery Tapes, and Hospital Productions.

ERICKSON, ROBERT Duo, Fives, Quintet, Trio CD
"Born in Michigan but for most of his life a true Californian, Robert Erickson (1917-1997) had a reputation as a maverick. His musical path was never a straight line, nor, really, a line at all but a landscape, with ranges of features rather than mere points of interest. He was a profound and original musical thinker who embraced the expressive possibilities of all music, from the Western classics and moderns of his own early education to Indian and Balinese traditions and all manner of contemporary experimentation, as long as it served a musical purpose. When encountering his work, one doesn't need to know more than one hears: what's important are the sounds one encounters and the expressive journey they suggest for each listener. His works can be looked at in three periods. There was an early period where he worked out his relationship to mid-twentieth century expressionism and atonality, producing such enduring and engaging works as the Duo for Violin and Piano (1957) (included here), the Chamber Concerto (1960) and the Concerto for Piano and Seven Instruments (1963). A middle period followed where he became involved with technology and all sorts of experimental techniques. The tape-and-instrument pieces Pacific Sirens and Nine and a Half for Henry (and Wilbur and Orville) and the music-theater trombone extravaganza General Speech can be said to typify this period. The final period begins in the mid-70s, when technology is put aside (most likely because of his declining health) in favor of instrumental works for his friends and associates. These works reach their culmination in the works on this CD: Fives (1988), Trio (1986) and Quintet (1985), among others. In all three periods, what he never abandoned was a sense of taste, elegance and style -- and a curiosity about sound and its functioning."

DUYKERS, MAX GITECK Folding Music CD
"Max Giteck Duykers (b. 1972) stands out for his ongoing dedication to the sound worlds made possible by the Pierrot ensemble. Therefore it is fitting that the first recording devoted exclusively to Duykers's music should feature two of the four 'Pierrot sextets' he has composed this far, that the remaining four works on the disc are playable by P6/P6+ subsets, and that everything here (except for the one vocal work which adds guest soprano Zen Wu) is performed by members of Ensemble Ipse, the P6 ensemble he co-founded in 2016 and for which he continues to serve as co-Artistic Director. As such it is an excellent introduction to Duykers's compositional aesthetic. While he has composed a great deal of multimedia work as well as orchestral music, chamber music forms the core of his catalog. Duykers's music revels in hovering somewhere between graspable tonality and a chromatic tetrachordal harmonic vocabulary that is usually associated with atonal pitch organization, unisons between players as well as a kind of motivic heterophony where players play similarly contoured but different lines simultaneously, constant metric shifts that still somehow groove, trippy microtonal interludes that do not in any way seem theoretically systemic but serve a purpose that is much more than merely ornamental, cadential silences, and -- what for lack of a more readily comprehensible term could be described as -- 'temporary ostinatos': single notes or chords that repeat incessantly for a period of time but then unexpectedly veer off into something else. Most of Duykers's pieces also exhibit a high degree of playfulness and exuberant joy. It is telling that Duykers concludes the program notes for several of them with an admonition to the players to 'have fun' or 'enjoy'. Duykers's music combines intellectual rigor with sheer physical pleasure as well as metaphysical transcendence. It is music that is deeply conscious of all the music that has come before it, but is very clearly music of our time while also offering some intriguing suggestions about where the music of the future might beckon."

SMITH, STUART SAUNDERS Palm Sunday CD
"'An insatiable listener, learner, and reader, Stuart Saunders Smith (b. 1948) has taken into his mind and spirit myriad styles of musical performance spanning centuries, methods of compositional practice of all sorts, and innumerable close personal relationships with artists of all disciplines. He has absorbed this vast expanse of knowledge, art, and personal experience, and rather than mimicking anything he has encountered along the way, he has manifested a truly personal, honest voice that rings true to himself and to all of his inspirations. In four of the works presented here, specifically Thicket (2010), Family Portraits: Self (in 14 Stations) (1997), Palm Sunday (2012), and Among Us (2007), Smith calls upon the performer to provide the musical dynamics, articulations, and phrasing to the traditionally notated pitches and rhythmic structures he provides. This charge extends the performer's contribution well into the realm of composition. In making personal musical decisions regarding dynamics, articulations, and phrasing, given the contrapuntal density of the material Smith composed, it became important for me to remove the mental burden of choreographed performance from the process and make my choices from the listener's perspective. This process involved the making and reviewing of a series of self-recordings that gradually led to the versions of the pieces I present here. The recurring issue in preparing these pieces was negotiating the balance between larger dramatic gestures, illuminating formal clarity in longer works, and shaping local nuance to assist the listener in aurally parsing dense passages.' --Kyle Adam Blair"

MCFARLANE REALITY GUEST, J. Ta Da CD
"Ta Da is the debut full length from J. McFarlane Reality Guest, the collective name for the trio headed by the eponymous Julia McFarlane. As a member of the group Twerps, McFarlane has traversed guitar-centric, melodic pop music for some years while honing a highly unique, personal musical language. This is the first recorded unveiling of her affecting, oblique songwriting panache, originally released in her native Australia on Hobbies Galore. Wheezing into view with a troubled reed instrument set against a series of whoozy synth lines, 'Human Tissue Act' is a foggy curtain the listener is invited to peel back. The dissonant notes are left to dance entwined, with clarinet heralding a Harry Partch-esque mallet percussion interlude. It's a mood. With no resolution in sight, an audience dragged closer into uncertainty is suddenly drenched with the light of inter-weaving wah wah synth and saxophone. 'I Am A Toy' introduces us to McFarlane's vocal, an effortless and matter-of-fact, accented statement that quietly takes the reins. While McFarlane's previous work in Twerps might reference '80s UK and antipodean guitar pop, Ta Da showcases different influences immersed in psychedelic music and synths. It's a brilliant, deft concoction swimming in Young Marble Giants-type minimalism, washed with bare pop and harmony similar to Kevin Ayers making sense of a Melbourne suburb, full of faces half-recognised in the blanching sun."

TAYLOR, GREGORY Retinue 2CD
"The six extended pieces on Retinue had their beginning in a book on creating step sequencers using Max/MSP that Gregory Taylor wrote for Cycling '74 after his return from the Netherlands (where his previous sonic diary Randstad was recorded). The development of the book's materials was an opportunity to re-encounter his love for sequencing as practiced by the form's early (Edgar Froese, Suzanne Ciani, Michael Hoenig) and later (Saul Stokes, Paul Ellis) practitioners and also to explore its connections with longer form Javanese musical traditions that have informed his work for decades. The crypto Javanese/1970s German chill-out room hybrid cross composed and recorded using Max/MSP, analog and digital hard/soft synths, and field recordings that resulted is a patient and poised music that embraces fluidity, recombinance, and a languid ambience that reveals itself on repeated listening. After a hiatus from the cassette culture movement of the 1980s, Gregory Taylor returned to regular recording and live performance as an improviser in the late 1990s. He has studied central Javanese Gamelan and electroacoustic music at Cornell, UW-Madison, New England Conservatory and the Instituut voor Sonologie, and written for publications such as Wired, Recording, Array, and Option, and hosted RTQE -- a radio program of contemporary audio on WORT-FM since 1986. He currently works for Cycling '74. Retinue is his fifth album for Palace Of Lights."

ZWEIKOMMASIEBEN Zweikommasieben #19 MAG
For its 19th edition, the Swiss magazine zweikommasieben presents a view on ambiguity as a hallmark of contemporary art and music, especially within our scene and its culture. After all, one would be hard-pressed to classify the work of its artists in terms of a singular activity, style, scene, or context. Félicia Atkinson, who has contributed a series of collages to this issue of zweikommasieben, is not simply a musician, but also a poet, visual artist, publisher, label owner, and more. The DJ and producer Parris, who was interviewed for this issue, places himself in a musical "no-man's land", although he grew up listening to grime and dubstep. The feeling of not belonging has been an issue for Phillip Sollmann, aka Efdemin, throughout his entire career. Until recently, Sollmann was set on keeping two fields of interest -- a career in techno and his pursues in sound art projects -- separate from each other. In the interview he talks about how realizing that such a clear distinction was not necessary and how the resulting aesthetic cross-fertilization has had an impact on himself. Finally, Caterina Barbieri, Cam Deas, Kali Malone, and Robin Buckley, aka rkss, who all pop up in this issue of zweikommasieben in one way or another, all understand their craft as a rupture with established musical genres and associated aesthetic norms, albeit in different contexts and using different means. There is no doubt that ambiguity, uncertainty, tension, and conflict lead to friction, but at the same time ambivalence, complexity, and multiplicity generate enormous aesthetic potential. Full content: Interviews with Cam Deas, Caterina Barbieri, Die Wilde Jagd, Gaika, Hdmirror, Kali Malone, Michele Rizzo, Parris, and rkss; a portrait of Efdemin; an essay on "Radio Spectral" by Francois J. Bonnet as well as a photo essay on the Rhizom Festival; regular columns like Anna Froelicher's "Track Down Fiction" (text), Georg Gatsas' "We Are Time" (photos), or Simian Keiser's "Sound Texts" (poetry); Contributions by Collapsing Market, Félicia Atkinson, and Wolf Eyes. Bi-lingual: English, German; 136 pages; size: 200x270x9 mm; edition of 2000.

LINGUA IGNOTA Caligula CD
"Caligula, the new album from Lingua Ignota, takes the vision of Kristin Hayter's vessel to a new level of grandeur, her purging and vengeful audial vision going beyond anything preceding it and reaching a new unparalleled sonic plane within her oeuvre. Succeeding her self-released 2017 All Bitches Die opus, this new one sees Hayter design her most ambitious work to date, displaying the full force of her talent as a vocalist, composer, and storyteller. Vast in scope and multivalent in its influences, with delivery nothing short of demonic, this is an outsider's opera; magnificent, hideous, and raw. Eschewing and disavowing genre altogether, Hayter builds her own world. Here she fully embodies the moniker Lingua Ignota, from the German mystic Hildegard of Bingen, meaning 'unknown language' -- this music has no home, any precedent or comparison could only be uneasily given, and there is nothing else like it in the contemporary realm. Working closely with Seth Manchester at Machines With Magnets studio, Hayter strips away much of the industrial and electronic elements of her previous work, approaching instead the corporeal intensity and intimate menace of her notorious live performances, achieved with unconventional recording techniques and sound sources, as well as a full arsenal of live instrumentation and collaborators including harsh noise master Sam McKinlay (The Rita), visceral drummer Lee Buford (The Body) and frenetic percussionist Ted Byrnes (Cackle Car, Wood & Metal), with guest vocals from Dylan Walker (Full of Hell), Mike Berdan (Uniform), and Noraa Kaplan (Visibilities). AGNOSTIC FRONT First Warning: The 'United Blood' Era Recordings, New York City, 1983 LP
First copies on clear vinyl. Controversial East Coast punk band Agnostic Front were lynchpins of the New York hardcore scene. Formed in 1982 by former Eliminators guitarist Vinnie Stigma along with vocalist John Watson, drummer Rob CribCrash, and bassist Diego, the band went through several other early members to settle on Vinnie Stigma, bassist Adam Mucci, drummer Raybeez, and Cuban-born singer Roger Miret for these recordings. Often misunderstood in their early days due largely to their majority skinhead following and the shock imagery of their record covers, the group carved out its reputation in the dilapidated Lower East Side of Manhattan, then blighty by poverty, drugs, violence, and high levels of urban decay. The recordings featured on this incendiary compilation date from the very start of their recording career, beginning with the demos that led to their debut seven-inch release, the self-issued United Blood EP (1983), bolstered by other recordings from the period that were left unissued at the time; some of the material included here later appeared on the Raw And Unleased CD (1995), but several songs are appearing on vinyl here for the very first time. Agnostic Front went on to reign supreme on the New York hardcore scene throughout the 1980s and although later recordings once again saw membership changes that brought a shift in style to include thrash-metal crossover elements, their longevity and high standing is such that they were featured on Showtime's The Godfathers of Hardcore documentary (2017), ultimately leading to Roger Miret's recently released autobiography, My Riot (2017).

MERZBOW Noise Mass CD/BOOK
Noise Mass matches previously unavailable Merzbow works from 1994 with pieces from the limited-edition Hole album of the same year. This new edition charts the through line between records such as Venereology (1994) and Pulse Demon (1996), and includes a 28-page book, with exclusive photographs, and a long-form interview with Masami Akita charting the continuum of Merzbow from 1979 to the present day. On Noise Mass in the late 1980s, Masami Akita's Merzbow began to shift from being a studio project into a fully-fledged performative undertaking. It was a decisive period that began opening up new possibilities for his very particular approach to sound. Across the first half of the 1990s, Merzbow began touring extensively across Europe, the United States, and also in his homeland. It was during this period that the dynamism of Merzbow exploded and the physicality of volume became a primary driver for the experiential capacity of the work. Simultaneously, Merzbow began developing a range of self-made instruments and techniques for exploiting found objects as sound sources, which he used in combination with amplifiers to create a unique spectrum of noise and feedback both in the studio and live. Noise Mass catalogs a critical period within the continuum of Merzbow. It typifies the radical approaches he developed not just through his music, but also through mastering, pushing the very medium of digital audio to its limit through extreme post-production approaches. Of Noise, Masami Akita remarks, "This was around the time Venereology was released from Relapse and the work of Merzbow became more well known to the world. Far greater quantities of that Relapse release were pressed, and much more promotion along with it. In other words, the image of Merzbow's music as it is best known in the world today came from this time. The music of Merzbow has always been a continuum, the piece added this time to Noise Mass, the revised version of Hole, is a work utilizing a voice similar in style to Venereology. Listening to both Hole and Venereology, one can appreciate how these works constitute a thread of continuity through this period." Noise Mass is just that, a ritual of intensity and ferocity that denotes the force that is Merzbow's approach to noise in the absolute.

FERNANDES, LUIS Demora CD
Portuguese electronic composer Luís Fernandes creates his debut edition Demora comprised of deep pulsations and cycling harmony, all smeared with an echoing dreaminess of kosmische musik. André Almeida Santos on Demora: "For the first solo record under his own name, Luís Fernandes chose an on-point title that echoes in one word a constant feeling throughout Demora. Demora means 'delay' in Portuguese. Depending on the way you use it on a sentence, it can also mean that something is taking too long or it's making someone wait for someone or something. Demora doesn't take too long to show you its intentions, but it leaves you waiting. It tricks you to think to wait for the take-off until you realize you're already in mid-journey. It's all part of the process that Luís embarked to create Demora. For this piece he decided to work in a different way from what he's used to. The desire to create a piece with a constant flow with little variations was the starting point for his new album. Armed with a modular synthesizer, he recorded everything in one take to give the core structure of the album a unified sound that would create a permanent relationship with the listener. Doing it in one take shaped the fundamentals for Demora. The flow of the improvisation gave room for Luís to play around with the structure and refine the sounds that now populate the main narrative of this 35-minute piece, separated in five different chapters. The middle sections of Demora, 'Demora Pt. 1' and 'Demora Pt. 2', sound like a reward. Not that you needed one. If you arrived there and felt tricked about the take-off, the slow and glimmering harmonies will provide the comfort you needed all along. It's here that Demora shows how beautifully crafted it is, how the details aren't just details. They're the tiny screws that make the machine operate into a subtle kosmische lullaby. The details aren't there to distract you from the main thing, they are there for you to embrace the core and follow the same flow, the same path, that Luís did when Demora took off in his synthesizer. It took time for Luís to publish something solo under his own name. After years under various aliases and three beautiful releases with Joana Gama, Luís Fernandes has flourished with this mesmerizing sonic experience."

RATKJE, MAJA S.K. Sult LP
LP version. Composed, performed, mixed, and produced by Maja S. K. Ratkje, Sult is based upon Ratkje´s music created for the ballet Sult ("Hunger") by director Jo Strømgren for the Norwegian National Ballet. This is a departure from the records and live settings normally associated with Ratkje, as we find her placed behind a modified, wiggly and out-of-tune pump organ, singing songs and improvising. Metal tubes, PVC tubes and a wind machine were built into the organ; guitar strings, a bass string, a resin thread, metal and glass percussion and a bow are also utilized. With little or no previous experience, she had to learn to play the thing live, using both hands and feet at the same time as singing. Maja played live on stage during every performance, but later modified and recorded the music especially for this record, with Frode Haltli co-producing. It´s a freestanding document, an entity of its own, but the atmosphere is very much the same as in the play: the dusty city of Kristiania in the 19th century, the street noises and the sounds.

TRANS-4M Sublunar Oracles 2LP
The history of underground electronic music is littered with inspired releases that, for one reason or other, slipped through the cracks. It would be fair to say that Trans-4M's 1992 debut album, Sublunar Oracles, is one such release. The full-length originally appeared on Belgian dance music megalith Buzz, an imprint whose output tended towards the more commercial end of the dance music market. Initially, Sublunar Oracles failed to make much impact and was championed only by a small group of chill-out DJs; these days, it's rightly considered a lost classic and one of the most overlooked albums of the ambient house era. It was the product of the blossoming studio relationship between brothers Stefan and Dimitri Van Elsen. The former, the elder of the two, had been making a living as a club DJ on the Belgian scene since the early 1980s, taking up electronic music production following years spent playing experimental and industrial fare on local pirate station Radio Centraal. Dimitri, meanwhile, spent his days studying jazz piano and his evenings working on tracks. The chance to release a collection of their bedroom productions came via a friend who worked for Buzz. The Van Elsen brothers grasped the opportunity, sequencing and tweaking a set of evocative, otherworldly tracks that had initially been written and produced over the best part of four years. Despite Stefan's status as a working club DJ, Sublunar Oracles largely looked towards the vibrant chill-out and ambient house scenes for inspiration, combining their own manipulated synthesizer sounds, dreamy jazz chord progressions, and gentle beats with a smorgasbord of spoken word samples and home-made field recordings. The Antwerp-based brothers designed the set as a concept album of sorts, with a clear narrative thread running through the album's eight intoxicating and ethereal tracks. However, they never made this concept public, and it's down to a new generation of listeners to piece together the story themselves. 26 years on from its initial release, the Van Elsens' lost classic is getting a new lease of life via a Safe Trip reissue that stretches the original's eight inspired tracks over two heavyweight slabs of wax. Beginning with the breakbeat-driven bliss of "Arrival", the album bobs and weaves its way through deep ambient house, sublime horizontal soundscapes, saxophone-laden electronic mysticism, dusty downtempo grooves and glassy-eyed positivity.

ROB Make It Fast, Make It Slow LP
2019 repress. Soundway present a reissue of Rob's second album for the first-time outside Ghana, originally released in 1978. Rob was an enigmatic recording artist from Ghana who cut two albums for the legendary Essiebons label in 1977. Neither of these were big domestic hits at the time and have since become prized amongst collectors in recent years. The title track from this LP was always one of the most popular on the first Soundway release Ghana Soundz (SNDW 001LP, 2008) and over the years the label has been asked many times to reissue the LP in its entirety. A stranger, slower offering than his more dancefloor funk-laden and Spartan first LP, this record sees Rob in similar territory but with the tempo switched down and the introspection turned up. Rob's trademark horns dominate and are supplied by the Mag-2, an army band founded by leader Amponsah Rockson, who named it after the army unit the band played for the "magnificent" second battalion. In 1977, Rob traveled to the coastal town of Takoradi in search of Mag-2, which had an entire section of its line-up dedicated to horns, with the intension of laying out his proposal to them. Luckily for Rob, the band took him up on it. With religious overtones and a broody, slightly off-key atmosphere at points it's certainly one of the stranger Afro-funk records to come out of West Africa but with tracks like "Loose Up Yourself" and "Make it Fast, Make it Slow" -- it's a unique gem that warrants repeat listening.

VA Italia New Wave: Minimal Synth, No Wave, & Post Punk Sounds From The '80s Italian Underground LP
2019 repress. What exactly happened in the Italian underground/post punk scene of the '80s, is not entirely clear. Therefore, this collection of 13 incredible tunes helps track down the feeling and focuses on the blurry images of a period that was mixing influences from the UK/USA scenes with a more "national" approach to new music developments. The damage began in 1977 when a series of urban/suburban musical agitators, whether skilled or complete amateurs, decided to embrace instruments as weapons for a war against sonic stereotypes. Here's the result: a multiform sonic attack that marks the history of a movement that may have remained local in most cases but whose echo reflected the amazing creativity of a generation. Features Neon, ?????? (Pankow), Le Masque, N.O.I.A., State Of Art, Jeunesse D'ivoire, Monuments, Rats, Fockewulf 190, Luc Orient, Illogico, 2+2=5, and La Maison.

NADJA Eros LP
Nadja were born in the eighties in Sarzana (Liguria). Towards the end of '82 the two founding members Fabio Giannini (guitar) and Osvaldo Lanata (vocals) were joined by Michele Militello on bass and Roberto Andreotti on drums. The first tape -- La Joie - was recorded in the new AR Studios in San Terenzo. Clearly influenced by the British goth movement Nadja soon introduced more than a reference to the French culture and the Mediterranean music. The surrealist matrix was evident in the lyrics, even if the socio-political influence is still there. At the turn of '85, the second tape -- Eros -- was out. While strictly anchored to the dark/post punk area, folk elements and dilated structures definitely appeared. After the release of that tape there is a slight change: Lanata leaves the group replaced by Maurizio Montemauri, and the lyrics will be soon written and sung in Italian, no longer in English. In '87, Nadja were just about to enter the studio again, but for a series of personal reasons (study, work, military service) the group was forced to stop. It wasn't until 2015 when two tapes containing a concert and a live rehearsal of the new songs are found. A re-mastered version of these recordings will re-surfaced in the FU_Nadja 87 CD, released that same year. Due to a series of positive feedback, Militello and Giannini will resume the activity as Nadja, giving birth to the Nadja Proyect. Following a reissue of La Joie (Onde Italiane, 2017) and Act IV (Sunflowers Records), it seems time for Eros, the sought after second tape, to be reissued here on vinyl for the first time. Alessandra Sauer wrote -- in WM number 3, an historical fanzine of the early 80's -- "of all the productions I reviewed for this issue, the Eros tape by Nadja is undoubtedly the best... it's even hard to define what they had in mind this time, difficult to define them, hard to pinpoint. Art was meant as love, then as 'eros'? And the audience is maybe identified with the lover... Nadja have definitely matured as musicians, the sound is less obscure and the pursuit of joy is not over." Sauer's words hit the mark. The work of Nadja is full of electricity, but with many moments of "dark" lyricism, a work ahead of its time.

MINIMA Minima LP
Minima is the new face of Barcelona punk. Members of Una Bestia Incontrolable, Barcelona, Fatamorgana, and Snor. 13 tracks to pull you away from the bar and into the pogo. Full of the kind of choice punk you'd expect of such a pedigree: jabbing riffs thrumming out, buzzed up with an insistent pull, clipped clattering beats pinning it down, vocals delivered with a potent snarl, accusatory and savage. From fizzing pogo of "Adolescente", to "Cicatriz"'s threatening hum, the whole album strikes a sharp balance between the big-riffing hardcore of someone like Glue or Nekra, and the Catalan/Spanish primitive-punk lineage that runs from Qloaqa Letal to dirt-raw rippers Pinen.

JAMES, SUSAN Sea Glass LP
Sunstone Records present the release of Susan James' sixth album, Sea Glass. By her own description, the music on Susan James' album is ''postmodern folk-rock'' which is as good a way as any to delineate how the LA-based singer songwriter casts aside the more obviously American roots-tinged colors and melodies of her previous work for an almost baroquely ornate, new-pop tapestry. Sea Glass was co-arranged by Sean O'Hagan (High Llamas, Stereolab) who brought a wondrous batch of his trademarked piquant string settings. O'Hagan sees James as roughly aligned in that American tradition of folk-pop artists of the '60s, such as Judy Henske and Nancy Priddy, whose tunes had a "future" edge of experimentation but definitely belonged to the American folk tradition."Susan James' Sea Glass is the real California sound, an all-embracing kind of music that breaks rules, hears new textures. Dig a bit and you'll find that it's not a stretch to say it's as much a California classic music as the disparate strains of Terry Riley, Harry Partch, The Beach Boys and Captain Beefheart." --LA Weekly"It's a lush, immaculately performed and arranged selection of songs that plays on James' roots in country and folk but draws from a deep love and understanding of all manner of '60s and '70s touchstones, particularly the baroque flourishes and ornate instrumentation of the early Laurel Canyon sound and psych-era Hollywood sunshine-pop," --Shindig! 75 DOLLAR BILL I Was Real 2LP
75 Dollar Bill is one of the essential groups at the heart of NYC's underground. Driven by the telepathic union of Che Chen's microtonal electric guitar and Rick Brown's odd metered percussion their long-form sound is unmistakable and compelling. On their third album I Was Real, the group expands in bold new directions, embracing brilliant fuller orchestrations, joyous rockers and entrancing new textures. Having emerged as a vibrant musical force with their previous effort -- with Wood/Metal/Plastic/Pattern/Rhythm/Rock (GB 047CD, TW J CS/LP, 2016) -- 75 Dollar Bill have spent the last few years bringing their music to new places and people, delivering what NYC locals have known for years, with their dedication to performance in venues of all shapes and sizes. The fruits of this work can be heard here on their expansive new double-LP I Was Real. The album, its title's origin a jumbled misremembering of the lesser-known Motown song "He Was Really Saying Something", is 75 Dollar Bill's third, featuring new directions accompanying the band's previously established interest in sprawling, unusual grooves and microtonal melodies. The record is enhanced by the presence of eight additional players in various combinations over its nine tracks -- but also shows off the duo's strength when stripped down to the core. Requiring a variety of approaches, the album was recorded over a four-year period, in four different studios, with the band's closest associates and collaborators in a range of different ensemble configurations. The album also features several "studio as instrument" constructions that harken back to the collage-experiments of the band's early cassette tapes, while at the same time pointing to territories altogether new. The players involved highlight the "social" aspect of the band and the eight guests that appear on the record are some of the band's closest friends and collaborators. Some pieces were conceived in the band's very early days and others are much newer, but the music is unmistakably 75 Dollar Bill. As Steve Gunn said about the previous record: "Strings come in underneath Che Chen's supreme guitar tone. Rick Brown's trance percussion offers a guiding support with bass, strings, and horns supporting the melody. They have gathered all the moving parts perfectly." Double-LP version presented in a heavy tip-on gatefold jacket with textured clothe wrap and matte foil stamping.Personnel: Rick Brown - plywood crate, hand and foot percussion, crude horns; Che Chen - 6 and 12-string and quarter-tone guitars, percussion; with: Sue Garner - guitar and bass guitar; Cheryl Kingan - alto and baritone saxophones; Andrew Lafkas - contrabass; Karen Waltuch - viola; Jim Pugliese - percussion; Barry Weisblat - signal processing, Casio SK-1; Steven Maing - quarter-tone guitar; Carey Balch - hi-hat.

"It's been nearly two decades since the Swedish rock-n-roll heroes The Hives unleashed their debut album on the world and almost 5 years since new music has been released. Now, they will drop TWO intoxicatingly brash new songs I'm Alive and Good Samaritan on a limited edition double A-side 7" via Third Man Records. Both tracks were produced & mixed by Dave Sardy (LCD Soundsystem, Wolfmother) in Los Angeles. The band explains: ''I'm Alive' is a song about crawling up from under a rock and obliterating all resistance that sounds like crawling up from under a rock and obliterating all resistance because it is a band crawling up from under a rock and obliterating all resistance. Use it in your own life to help you obliterate your own resistance! Musically slower and with more chords than usual, but heavy man. Real heavy. 'Good Samaritan' is a song about helping people help themselves by not helping them? Are they sarcastic or do they hate people now? Is this punk? You never know with these Hives and it's been a while since I saw them so let's all go see them again and see what they are on about? Musically faster than usual but a surprising dive into the chorus that feels like going into hyperspace. Now it's not surprising anymore. Oh well.' FENNESZ Agora LP
Agora is Christian Fennesz's first solo album since Mahler Remix (TONE 052LP, 2014) and Bécs (EMEGO 165CD/LP, 2014). Fennesz writes: "It's a simple story. I had temporarily lost a proper studio workspace and had to move all my gear back to a small bedroom in my flat where I recorded this album. It was all done on headphones, which was rather a frustrating situation at first but later on it felt like back in the day when I produced my first records in the 1990s. In the end it was inspiring. I used very minimal equipment; I didn't even have the courage to plug in all the gear and instruments which were at my disposal. I just used what was at hand." Fennesz uses guitar and computer to create shimmering, swirling electronic sound of enormous range and complex musicality. His lush and luminous compositions are anything but sterile computer experiments. They resemble sensitive, telescopic recordings of rainforest insect life or natural atmospheric occurrences, an inherent naturalism permeating each piece. He lives and works in Vienna. Recorded at Kaiserstudios, Vienna, August, September 2018. "Rainfall": vocals by Katharina Caecilia Fennesz; "Agora": field recordings Manfred Neuwirth, vocals Mira Waldmann. Photography and design by Jon Wozencroft. Mastered by Denis Blackham at Skye. Full color inner and outer sleeve. PRESAGE Presage LP
Originally released in 1983 on independent label For Sale (sub-label of the highly influential Baby Records, home of some of the most striking Italo-disco ever), this album is quite a different monster. Produced, composed, and arranged by Gian Piero Reverberi (once part of the progressive cult heroes Le Orme and then the man behind the "classical gone disco" project Rondò Veneziano) Presage lives in a "twilight-zone" where new-wave, post-prog, and disco weirdness collides. Some of these numbers could have been easily played at the Hacienda in Manchester or even used as a soundtrack for some mid-eighties Argento movie. Part of the musicians used to be involved in the prog band from Genova Struttura & Forma, while others spent time behind the desk with some minor disco stars. All-in-all, quite an unusual heavy rare-groove collection. Clear vinyl.

Primarily instrumental, the duo shows their virtuosity on album standouts "On The Move" and "Fusion". With a vibe at times more similar to Lee Michaels classic late-60s LPs than their German contemporaries, and with nods to Keith Emerson's work with The Nice, this is a welcome reissue of an impossibly rare early '70s prog-psych cult classic. DIXON & CECIL TAYLOR, BILL Duets 1992 2LP
Trumpeter Bill Dixon and pianist Cecil Taylor, friends going back to their Truman-era school days, associated copiously in nearly every artistic fashion -- except making music together. Duets is their only meeting in studio apart from both artists appearing on Taylor's 1966 landmark Blue Note LP, Conquistador. In 1992 they made the briefest summer festival tour to Italy and France, budgeting in two additional days for this recording session. That musical output was prepared for a release that was shelved for more than a quarter century and now comes out as a posthumous release in tribute to both giants. The initiative to release this music began with the Bill Dixon Trust and was approved by Taylor in his final years. Now, a wider public will hear music that they both prized, documenting the extraordinary relationship between their musicalities. Duets is a remarkable and unique item in the extensive catalogs of both men's recordings. Fans familiar with Dixon and Taylor's distinctive styles will approach with curious uncertainty: How could it possibly work to blend styles of Joyce and Hemingway? Pollock and Kline? Nevelson and Brancusi? Bill Dixon and Cecil Taylor share a fundamental fiber of taste and reaction as the basis for their interaction. The complementary nature of Duets makes the case thoroughly that the project stands apart not just from the numerous duet projects of both instrumentalists, but from the wide field of improvised duets in this sector of the music. This double-LP set has been scrupulously mastered from the original tape, preserving both the high gloss and the brutal physicality of the recording. Plates cut by Sterling Sound's Grammy®-winning mastering master Steve Fallone have been pressed into virgin vinyl at QRP, and wrapped in a hand-numbered Old-Style Tip-On® gatefold jacket that Stoughton has perfected. The package also includes a new contextualizing essay by historian Ben Young, hitherto-unpublished photographs from the collaboration, and artifacts reproduced from the original release plans. Bill Dixon conceived this as a deluxe digital release; Triple Point is honored to bring Duets to vinyl reality in the 21st century. Strictly limited edition of 665 (hand-numbered).

BERK, ERNEST Electronic Music For Two Ballets LP
Extraordinary unreleased homemade electronics from the late 1960s made by a pioneering ballet dancer and musician. There are very few Ernest Berk recordings. As a pioneering ballet dancer, instructor and electronic music artist he was surprisingly prolific. He made music for all sorts of uses -- he even made library music -- and of course this very album of his music for two of his ballets. Towards the end of his life Ernest Berk gifted his entire collection of works, tapes, documents, and all to the Historical Archive Of The City Of Cologne. Tragically, in 2009, a large part of the archive collapsed (due to the construction of an underground railway) destroying 90% of everything. Berk's tapes have tragically never been recovered. They are assumed lost forever. So these two recordings -- issued privately circa 1970 -- remain precious, to say the least. There were no masters, this new pressing was simply transferred from the original copy held by his family. Trunk have done their best to restore the sound. The original notes have also been reproduced, and from what Trunk can gather, this album may well have been pressed and given away as promotion for the Dance Theatre Commune. The original album came with a small piece of paper with a geometrical squiggle stuck on the front.Ernest Berk was born in Cologne, Germany and came to England just before the war. He started a dance company in London and wanted a sound especially suited to his experimental dance style. This he found in electronic music. Berk felt that electronic music was able to express the feelings of contemporary society in a more potent and communicative way than conventional forms of music. This is not to say he disregarded traditional forms of music, rather, he blended the best elements of both, creating a new and exciting sound. Over the years he gained an international reputation as a composer of electronic music. His works have been heard in Berlin, Cologne, Florence, Edinburgh, United States, to name a few.
