L'EPEE Diabolique CD
The debut album release from L'Epee, the band of Emmanuelle Seigner (Ultra Orange & Emmanuelle), Anton Newcombe (The Brian Jonestown Massacre), Lionel and Marie Liminana (The Limiñanas). It is very rarely that a musical project lives up to the billing of being a "supergroup". However, the exception to this rule comes in the shape of L'Epee. A stellar combination of the talents of The Brian Jonestown Massacre's Anton Newcombe, cinematic femme fatale Emmanuelle Seigner and ice-cool pop provocateurs The Limiñanas, L'Epee transcend artistic and traditional borders. Far from being defeated by a world seemingly regressing into turmoil, L'Epee's strength comes from a long history of challenging the status quo -- they all share a fierce intelligence and an outsider aesthetic which, over the decades, has been sharpened to a razor's edge. Fitting, then, that their name translates as "The Sword". This pent-up creative energy has been channeled into their extraordinary debut album, Diabolique. Named in tribute to Mario Bava's 1968 cult classic Danger: Diabolik, it's a musical masterclass where elements of garage, ye-ye, sleaze rock, cult soundtracks, sci-fi, spaghetti westerns, and girl-group pop noir are combined with the cut-and-thrust zeal of a band bursting with ideas and energy. All delivered by Emmanuelle in a sultry Gallic drawl which will send a frisson of recognition through anyone familiar with her iconic roles in, among many others, Frantic (1988), Venus In Fur (2013), and Bitter Moon (1992) (all directed by her husband, Roman Polanski). "I've loved rock music since I was a kid," she says, namechecking Lou Reed, The Velvet Underground, and The Stooges as key influences. Having asked close friend Bertrand Belin to provide lyrics for three further tracks ("Grande", "On Dansait Avec Elle", and "Lou"), the trio set to work at The Limiñanas' studio in Cabestany, Southern France, in November 2017. Satisfied with the results, the trio flew to Berlin to hook up with Anton and Andrea Wright at his Cobra Studio in Berlin. Utilizing a treasure trove of vintage equipment, Anton set to work, re-recording the drums with Marie and adding -- and deleting -- tracks so that the shifting layers of sound suited the mood of each individual track.

FABULOUS DIAMONDS Plain Songs LP
The Australian duo of Jarrod Zlatic and Nisa Venerosa harness expansiveness through a sepia-tone collage of intangible digital textures and adapted vocal chamber music. Formed in the early 2000s, previous albums for cult-labels like Chapter Music and Siltbreeze waded through dubby psych-rock territories but their latest for Alter stands alone. Recorded in Melbourne by Sam Karmel (F ingers, CS + Kreme), the album occupies an eerie, pastoral twilight zone. Venerosa's stark singing style challenging the ambient textures weaving in and out of the stereo field. Plain Songs slowly unfolds through a mesh of processed drones, flickering static, and fragile yet propulsive bedding loops. "G.B.H" sees the pair utilizing layers of spoken word and keyboard motifs atop spiraling background whirs and softly uttered harmonies. The late-night atmosphere pervades with "On Temptation" and "Forever Turned" where slow, dissonant passages work in tandem with Venerosa's spectral vocal shifts. Zlatic's trumpet howls into the ether on "Flowers and Fade" accompanied by drum rattles, repetitive mantras, and oscillating synthesizers to mark one of the LP's most unique and isolated moments. There are hints of Nico's Janitor of Lunacy (1996) and Meredith Monk's Book of Days (1990) at play, where the icy screeches and distortions give way to the wax and wane poetry of "A Short Confession".

ELLIS & RIO 18, CARWYN Joia! CD
You might know Carwyn from other projects like Colorama, Bendith (Welsh dreamy folk), or Zarelli (hauntologic electronic). Or maybe you might be familiar with him because he collaborates with pop superstars and universal references like Edwyn Collins, The Pretenders, Oasis, or Saint Etienne. Or maybe you don't know him at all, so far, because Ellis is one of those musicians that does not feel self-important, that is not under the spotlight but that is praised by other musicians and everyone wants to collaborate with. His diverse personal projects are a sample of his passionate love for the music with no borders of any kind. He is hard to label, and transforms his skin in each new record. Almost in every song. He records the albums that he feels like doing whenever he feels like doing them, and with the sound and the people that stand out for him in that moment. Most of his songs are sung in Welsh, his mother language, but his music is timeless and universal. Carwyn always approaches the global by the local. It isn't a coincidence that precisely now he has decided to take the plunge and go to Rio de Janeiro to record, along with two distinguished crazy local artists like Domenico Lancellotti and Kassin, his most colorful record. Joia!, in which he presents his new band Carwyn Ellis & Rio 18, is a non-explicit plea against the Brexit. Against any Brexits taking place right now any way or another in this world shocked by the continuous transformations and fears that they lead to. Pretty sure that Lancellotti or Kassin might say that it is an anti-Bolsonaro record. However, Carwyn and his fellows in Rio 18 prefer to do a cheerful and positive record, like almost all the South American music it is inspired by, to celebrate that those changes, that definitely marks an era, boosts and eases the fact that a musician from Cardiff is able to record an album with musicians from the other side of the world, and make it halfway between Rio and London with the invaluable help from another top musician, like Shawn Lee.

Bored!'s finest, most sublime, purest excellence, perfection of sonic hazard and guitar violence. Dave Thomas once spoke about this recording as them jamming in the studio with the tape rolling until it finished and the band kept on playing further and further. The most brutal recording ever done in Australia on the roots of Detroit sound. Take It Out On You is a 1990s Bored! EP that has now, on this release, been expanded with three bonus tracks in order to complete the full recordings of the band in 1990, and with Tim Hemensley (GOD, Powder Monkeys) on bass and vocals. 150 gram vinyl; Edition of 500.

SCHNITZLER, CONRAD Conditions of the Gas Giant CD
Bureau B present a reissue of Conrad Schnitzler's Conditions of the Gas Giant, originally released on cassette in 1988. The Berlin artist first released these recordings on a small American cassette label. Admirers of the seminal artist Conrad Schnitzler can be found all over the planet, including the USA, of course. Matt Howarth, illustrator and independent comic artist, is one of them. He has been following Schnitzler's music since the early 1970s whilst drawing offbeat science fiction stories. One day Howarth came up with the idea of making Schnitzler a member of a notorious band -- The Bulldaggers -- who featured in one of his comic series. Not wanting to go ahead without permission, he got in touch with Schnitzler who readily embraced the idea. In fact, he posted a pile of photos by return so that the graphic artist could draw him properly. The Bulldaggers popped up repeatedly in the comics and Schnitzler was (repeatedly) delighted. A friendship soon developed between him and Howarth. In 1986, Howarth designed his first cover for a Schnitzler album (Concert) and the following year Schnitzler entrusted him with tapes which Howarth was able to bring to the notice of the small American label Bird O' Pray. Considering the label's predominantly punk and early garage leanings, Howarth and Schnitzler were as surprised as each other to see the album successfully released on cassette. Howarth and Schnitzler came up with the album title together. Conditions of the Gas Giant reflected the atmosphere they associated with the music, clouds of manifold colors, whirling nervously above a gaseous planet. A methane and helium tryst in sonic form -- fireworks, pyrotechnics for the eyes, like the surface of Jupiter, just as Schnitzler's tracks are pyrotechnics for the ears. This is the image conveyed by Matt Howarth in the liner notes for the reissue -- naturally designed by himself -- based on the aborted 1990s CD release. He also called on his friend D.H. Kister for further assistance, the man who first introduced him to Schnitzler's music almost fifty years ago. First CD and vinyl release.

And on the flip, they've married the originals with three remixes, from Kenyan-via-Kampala talent Slikback, who gives "Sharingan" an industrial pulsing feel, Ariwo's Pouya Ehsaei, with a stripped-back take on "Itachi", and Native Cruise with a lush, Balearic-tinged edit of "Sharingan".

"The source material and foundation for this album are field-recordings by Mathias Josefson collected on a journey through the deserts of the American Southwest and translated into an acoustic travel journal through a spectral landscape, where the edges of memory and imagination are blurred. Joining Mathias on this album is John Björkman, who performs on instruments acquired on his travels to Nepal and whose performance was recorded at the legendary Elektronmusikstudion (EMS) in Stockholm, Sweden. "Following 2018's highly acclaimed collaboration album with Russia's Phurpa, Frederic Arbour presents a new full length album under his Visions moniker. We are now presented with more grounded and melody based pieces than on his previous releases, which were more out worldly and exploring sonic expanse. Using a stripped back approach and forging new sonic territories, Temples also serves as a hymn to lost civilisations, and a gratitude for what can still be found and discovered from our predecessors. As societies fall, most of their temples and shrines seem to remain, perhaps, as a reflection of the materiality of spirit."

HAMMERED HULLS Hammered Hulls 7"
"Hammered Hulls are a brand new band from Washington D.C. made up of some very old connections. Mary Timony (bass) and Alec MacKaye (vocals) grew up in the same Washington neighborhood and have spent the better part of their lives in each other's somewhat distant orbit. Always aware of each other, but never able to play together. Mark Cisneros (Guitar) has been in D.C. for more than a decade. He cut his teeth in Los Angeles listening to both Mary and Alec's bands, but also a healthy dose of free jazz and garage. He is the man who plays everything with everyone, but this is his band. Hammered Hulls are rounded out by Chris Wilson (drums), a monstrous drummer with no shortage of love for all three of his bandmates. Every person in this band is a fan of every other person in this band. Mutual respect drives this train. But to say they are an odd collection of influences is to understate the point. If you tried you couldn't imagine what this band might sound like. This single was recorded and mixed in a single day at Inner Ear studios, appropriate home to everyone in the DC scene."

MESSTHETICS, THE Anthropocosmic Nest CD
"Out September 6th on Dischord Records, Anthropocosmic Nest is the second full-length by Washington, D.C.'s The Messthetics, who are Anthony Pirog, Joe Lally, and Brendan Canty. Recorded at the band's practice space throughout 2019, it's an album that more perfectly captures the trio's current live dynamic, complete with improvisational tangents, playful experimentation, and cathartic sprawl. When The Messthetics recorded their debut album in 2017, the trio had only done a handful of shows and had yet to fully find its footing on stage. In a way, those compositions were a template for the band that Pirog, Lally, and Canty hoped would come into being through subsequent work on the road. Since then, The Messthetics have played upwards of 200 shows across the US, Europe and Asia. Their dialog as a performing unit has necessarily focused and intensified. As a result, Anthropocosmic Nest offers a more varied vision of the band. It's the loudest the trio has ever been and also the quietest. Formed in 2016 the Messthetics are Anthony Pirog, Joe Lally, and Brendan Canty. Pirog is a jazz and experimental guitarist based in Washington, D.C. One half of the duo Janel & Anthony, he also performs regularly with Low Ways Quartet and James Brandon Lewis. Canty and Lally were the rhythm section of the band Fugazi from its inception in 1987 to its period of hiatus in 2002. Since then, Canty has remained active as a documentary filmmaker, producer, and composer, and released a music as a member of the band Deathfix. Lally has released three solo albums and toured extensively with a frequently-rotating cast of musicians."

VA Don't Think I've Forgotten: Cambodia's Lost Rock and Roll 2LP
2019 repress. Double LP in gatefold sleeve with insert and download code. Expanded edition of the soundtrack to the celebrated 2014 documentary film Don't Think I've Forgotten: Cambodia's Lost Rock and Roll, originally released on CD by Dust-to-Digital in 2015. On April 17, 1975, Phnom Penh fell to the Khmer Rouge and Cambodian rock and roll was no more. Its star musicians were targeted and killed, record collections were destroyed, clubs were closed, and Western-style music-making, dancing, and clothes were outlawed. The deaths of approximately two million Cambodians and the horrors of the Killing Fields have been well documented; add to this John Pirozzi's fascinating tale of Cambodia's vibrant pop music scene, beginning in the 1950s and '60s and influenced by France's Johnny Hallyday and Britain's Cliff Richard and the Shadows. Cambodian culture has long been synonymous with a love for the arts. Don't Think I've Forgotten pays homage to the country's rock legends who paid for their creativity with their lives. Punctuating rare archival footage with telling interviews with the few surviving musicians, Don't Think I've Forgotten examines and unravels Cambodia's tragic past through the eyes, words, and songs of its popular music stars of the '50s, '60s, and '70s. Compiled by Pirozzi, the soundtrack album is very cinematic in nature -- the sequencing and remastered audio transport the listener through the rock and roll history of Cambodia in a way that parallels the film. It is both entertaining and essential to hear so many tracks that have never before been available outside of Cambodia. Performers include The Royal University of Fine Arts, Sinn Sisamouth, Chhoun Malay, Huoy Meas, Baksey Cham Krong, Ros Serey Sothea, Pen Ran, Sieng Vannthy, Va Sovy, Drakkar, Pou Vannary, Yol Aularong, and Cheam Chansovannary. Includes two tracks not included on the CD version ("Three Maidens" by Ros Serey Sothea and "Have You No Mercy" by Drakkar).

BONNET & STEPHEN O'MALLEY, FRANCOIS J. Cylene 2LP
First time outing from two ardent explorers of peripheral sound tactics. Cylene is the first collaboration by François J. Bonnet (Kassel Jaeger) and Stephen O'Malley (Sunn O)))). Laid bare, you have a subtle and nuanced study of their individual practices forming a titanic whole. O'Malley's guitar inscribes a void that patiently opens up a spacious universe for Bonnet to discreetly alter with perception re-orientating studio maneuvers. Cylene is infinitely rewarding for those that succumb to its delicate detours. A vast glacial plain unfurls slowly upon the listener invoking a mood similar to the stillness found following despair. As Joseph Ghosn succinctly outlines in his liner notes, "Stephen and François deal in those moments and instants that happen after the violence, and the ugliness and the mess. Their music is about chaos being summoned and ordered. It is about the noise that nurtures your ears after a long heartbreaking pain. I have heard the sounds of wars being fought and the noises of hearts being broken, and I have never found a shelter as soothing as this music which makes me think of sunken ships and beauty found in the depths of oceans long forgotten." Art direction: Stephen O'Malley. Portrait photographer: Eléonore Huisse. Recorded at GRM Studios, Paris May 2018. Edited and mixed by François Bonnet at GRM studios, Paris August 2018. Mastering by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin January 2019.

VA Strain Crack & Break: Music From The Nurse With Wound List Volume One (France) 2LP
After years of mythology, misinterpretation, and procrastination Nurse With Wound's Steven Stapleton finally chooses Finders Keepers as the ideal collaborators to release "the right tracks" from his über-legendary psych/prog/punk peculiarity shopping list known as The Nurse With Wound List, commencing with a French specific Volume One of this authentically titled Strain Crack Break series. Featuring some Finders Keepers' regulars amongst galactic Gallic rarities, this double-vinyl dossier demystifies some of the essential French free jazz and Parisian prog inclusions from the alphabetical "dedication" inventory as printed the anti-bands 1979 industrial milestone debut. When Steven Stapleton, Heman Pathak, and John Fothergill's anti-band Nurse With Wound decided to include an alphabetical dedication to all their favorite bands on the back of their inaugural LP the notion of creating a future record dealers' trophy list couldn't have been further from their minds. By adding a list of untraveled European mythical musicians and noise makers to their own debut release of unchartered industrial art rock they were merely providing a suggestive support system of existing potential like-minded bands. Many of the rare, obscure and unpronounceable genre-free records on The Nurse With Wound List have slowly found their own feet and stumbled in to the homes of open-minded outer-national vinyl junkies, mostly without consultation of the enigmatic NWW map. Via vinyl vacations, on cheap flights and interrail tickets, buying bargain bin LPs on a shoestring while oblivious to the pending pension worthy price tags after their 40-year vintage, Stapleton and Fothergill, even if you've never heard of them, were at the bottom of the pit before "digging" became pay dirt. The List has been mythologized, misunderstood, and misconstrued. It's also been overlooked, overestimated, and under-appreciated in equal measures. Bolstered by the sub-title "Categories strain, crack and sometimes break, under their burden," all bands on the inventory (many chosen on the strength of just one track alone) were chosen for their genre-defying qualities. Forty years after Nurse With Wound's first record, Finders Keepers, in close collaboration with Steve Stapleton remind fans of this kind of "lost" music, that there once existed a feint path which was worn away decades before major label pop property developers built over this psychedelic underground. A collaborative attempt to officially, authentically, and legally compile the best tracks from the list, succeeding where many overzealous nerds have deferred. The first volume of the series focuses exclusively on individual tracks of French origin, the country that unsurprisingly hosted the highest content of bands on the list. Comprising of musique concrète, free jazz, Rock In Opposition, Zeuhl School space rock, macabre ballet music, lo-fi sci-fi, and classic horror literature inspired prog.Features Jacques Thollot, Philippe Besombes, Igor Wakhévitch, Mahjun, Lard Free, Etron Fou Leloublan, Jean Cohen-Solal, Z. N. R., Red Noise, Pierre Henry, Horrific Child, Dashiell Hedayat, and Jean Guérin.

MOON DIAGRAMS Trappy Bats LP
"Moon Diagrams' (Deerhunter's Moses Archuleta) new mini-LP, feat. radiant reworks from Shigeto, Angel Deradoorian, and Jefre Cantu-Ledesma. Trappy Bats was largely recorded in a single night as a means to process the intense intersection of Archuleta's social, political, and personal hysteria. Having been arrested for an unknown, missed court date, Archuleta spent 24 hours in a holding cell, opening ample time to reflect on his life, the current state of the nation (the jail televisions were showing a constant feed of the then-active Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville), and the other inmates stuck inside the containment center. Upon being released the next day, Archuleta found himself in a bout of insomnia and feeling the need to process everything through music. Here, Archuleta is in his freest state, channeling the turmoil and confusion he was experiencing into an unencumbered fit of creativity. It's pure, unadulterated escapism with an even more callous palette of sounds than before. 'Trappy Bats' could be the sonic spawn of Not Waving and Terrence Dixon, with a slow and snarling mix of percussive clatter and washes of orchestral tones that unravel along its 12-minute runtime. Shigeto implodes the track into a kaleidoscope of viscerally giddy dance music. 'Wipeout' is a slow-motion waltz of dusty piano and clattering percussion loops that cooly stumble along with the woozy, nocturnal flare of the Caretaker or Philip Jeck. The haunted reverie ventures even deeper with an electrified ambient re-imagination by Jefre Cantu-Ledesma. 'Daisychain' goes almost completely off the grid, offering up a sweetly submerged slab of constantly evolving murkiness in the vain of Demdike Stare or a dosed Andy Stott. The sweet shuffle levitates into the air with a celestial re-interpretation by sonic visionary Angel Deradoorian. The end result is an extended traipse of Saturday evening fever-dream techno, Sunday morning cigarette jazz-pop, and every blank-thought in between."

GROOVE THEORY Groove Theory 2LP
"The neo-soul movement of the late 1990s, which fused classic soul sounds with contemporary elements, heralded the arrival of some of the greatest R&B recordings of the decade. Albums like Lauryn Hill's The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill, D'Angelo's Brown Sugar, and Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite were all born of this trend, while artists such as Mos Def, The Roots, and Common whole-heartedly embraced the sound, creating some of their most timeless material in the process. These are some of neo-soul's great successes, but a slew of underground acts were what set the initial blueprint for their more pop-friendly acquaintances to follow. Acts such as R&B duo Groove Theory. The New York pair, consisting of singer/songwriter Amel Larrieux, and producer Bryce Wilson, (A veteran of the legendary 80s electronic group Mantronix) helped set the tone for neo-soul via their lone studio release, the self-titled Groove Theory. The nearly hour-long record features 14 tracks of Wilson's smooth soul arrangements and atmospherics merged with golden era boom-bap beats, and Larrieux's siren-quality vocals, inspired equally by a combination of Native Tongues, peak Marvin Gaye, Joan Armatrading, Soul II Soul, as well as elements of breakbeat, jazz fusion, and even trip hop. It's a definitive, but often overlooked classic of the 1990s, which helped expand contemporary R&B's sound, render Billboard hits out the tracks 'Tell Me', 'Keep Tryin'', and 'Baby Luv', and even found the time for a Todd Rundgren cover. On the cusp of Groove Theory's 25th anniversary, Get On Down is proud to bring you this vinyl reissue of an underrated 90s gem. The original record has never been re-released on wax since its 1995 debut, but is now presented here with fully remastered audio, and bundled in a full-color insert sleeve with complete lyrics and liner notes."

AXELROD, DAVID Seriously Deep LP
"The rediscovery of the music of David Axelrod in the 1990s was a revelation to the scores of hip-hop and breakbeat DJs that sampled him, but his composition genius was on display as early as the 1960s. After producing and arranging major critical and commercial hits for Lou Rawls, The Electric Prunes, David McCallum, and Julian 'Cannonball' Adderley, he was encouraged by Capitol Records to record and produce solo material. Coming right on the heels of The Beatles' revolutionary 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band, Axelrod would produce a slew of instrumental baroque pop records, which were intricately orchestrated, fused elements of jazz, psychedelic rock, chamber music, and neo-classical, and tackled issues of mental enlightenment, environmental impact, and would be hailed by critics as highly ambitious pieces of conceptual art. The albums Song Of Innocence (1968), Songs Of Experience (1969), and Earth Rot (1970) are most often hailed as David Axelrod's finest moments, but little is mentioned of the producer's 1970s material. Among these records is Seriously Deep, his lone album recorded for Polydor, and an unheralded gem of jazz-rock fusion. On Seriously Deep, Axelrod dispenses with the heavily orchestrated measures of previous works to conduct a powerhouse crew of session musicians, including Leon Ndugu Chancler of Santana on drums, Mailto Correa on percussion, Jim Hughart on bass, Joe Sample on electric keys, and many others, with production from frequent Axelrod collaborators Cannonball Adderley and Jimmy Bowen. Seriously Deep is an obscure release, but also one of David Axlerod's tightest, and most exploratory ones. Across six tracks, Axelrod and his collective of players dip in and out of bounding jazz-funk, Afro-Latin grooves, cinematic flourishes, psychedelic synth washes, and blaring big band horns. It's a singularly insular curiosity of musical impressionism that's equal parts brooding and joyous, a definitive part of Axelrod's discography, and a well of sample material for tracks by Mobb Deep, Large Professor, The Black Eyed Peas, and Beanie Siegel, among others."

VATICAN SHADOW Pakistan Military Academy LP
The best Vatican Shadow release, bar none, finally lands on vinyl for the first time as part of a long overdue remaster/reissue series for the project's earliest, fêted releases Originally slunk out on tape in 2011, Pakistan Military Academy sees Dominick Fernow (Prurient, Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement) calibrate his night-vision goggles to scan the most potent, affective visions of dark ambient and militaristic techno in his war chest. At the time of release, only months after the capture of Osama Bin Laden by US Army SEAL "Night Stalkers", the project really came into its own as a form of impressionistic reportage, daring to grasp the nettle of contemporary US geopolitics in a way that, as music and art history will only make starker, everyone else broadly avoided at the time. In place of literal lyrics, a mix of quotes from newspapers and official government communiques, together with evocative photo documentation, supply the song titles and narrative/aesthetic framework for what are essentially abstracted emotions related to American military and foreign policy. Depending on how much you read or buy into it, for us at least the music rarely fails to evoke the shadowy unease and precarity of that era, as the sound betrayed an underlying mood contrary to the positivity of Obama-era politics, and that also spoke to the realignment of borders between musicks and socio-economics. The A side is worth the cost of entry alone for "Whitewashed Compound Stealth Helicopter Crash", a spine-freezing tract of arcing synth pads leading to one of this decade's most memorable codas, but when we factor in the scudding techno-stepper "Staccato Bursts of Gunfire", plus the haunting late period Muslimgauze styles of "CIA Contractor Freed Over Pakistan Killings", and the deep systolic thrum of "Prime Minister Defiant As Pakistan Outs CIA Agent", this plate becomes an absolute essential for any and all connoisseurs of modern industrial and dark ambient music. RIYL: Muslimgauze, Prurient, Alberich, Raime. Remastered at Dubplates & Mastering.

MONOKLE & AL-90 Mindperfection LP
Mindperfection is the result of a collaboration between the St Petersburg producer, Monokle and AL-90, a musician hailing from the Russian port of Murmansk on the edge of the Arctic Circle. "A few years ago, we were offered to make a joint track, it turned out to be very original and suited in spirit both me and AL-90. We also got a very big feedback after its release," says Monokle of the relation, "After that, we talked to each other for a long time about working on another joint release." Despite the hundreds of kilometers of land separating both musicians, creating the album was a smooth and speedy process, Mindperfection definitely draws on Monokle's earlier releases; tracks which unite fragments of IDM, glitch, ambient, and drone to create a unique mosaic of sound that has come to define the producer's style. There is a lot going on some of the tracks, samples with varying moods, accelerated beats, and scraps of voice heard here and there, but the overall picture is surprisingly very harmonic. The tracks in the album are tied together and made cohesive by an inherent warmth. Even in some of the more fast-paced and darker titles, there is a subtle melancholy that can be felt within. The track "Lowland" for instance, consists of displaced rhythms which accelerate and slow down in an eerie melody, "I like the atmosphere of this track, it is gloomy and at the same time brisk and free," says Monokle. While a lot of their usual tools and effects were employed, Monokle and AL-90's collaboration rendered new sound worlds to Mindperfection. AL-90's earlier releases have a lo-fi quality to them, a fuzziness that is reminiscent of the sound of a cassette. For Mindperfection, he employed several filters on Monokle's otherwise crisp sound to soften its edges and create something more organic, "I'm not used to such a dirty sound, because AL-90 deliberately spoiled the original, pure sound. But it gave the album a certain soft, analog and cassette charm," says Monokle. Mindperfection is an album that delivers in textures and complexity. With superimposed layers that are at once dark and beautiful, alienating and warm, toe-tapping and introspective, the album is a melting pot of effects and ideas. The seemingly contradictory elements come together in structures of kaleidoscopic cohesiveness, that are testament to Monokle and AL-90's experience, skills, and successful collaboration.

BOURBONESE QUALK Laughing Afternoon CD
"Bourbonese Qualk were an experimental music group from England who were active from 1979 until 2003. The group were always obsessively and uncompromisingly focused on controlling their work - they ran their own record label, recording studio, tour organisation and music venue (the legendary 'Ambulance Station') -- they refused to integrate into the commercial music racket turning down publishing deals from major labels -- stubbornly opting for total independence. Bourbonese Qualk were also known for their political activism which was formed in the crucible of the 1980s Britain: The Miner's Strike, Falklands/Malvinas war, Anti-fascism, Thatcherism, Moneterism, squatting/housing, local government corruption, anti-capitalism, and Anarchism - which was further re-enforced by touring Europe and meeting like-minded groups and organisations. They saw their music as a revolutionary cultural force -- a belief that radical musical forms must be part of positive social change. In 1984 Bourbonese Qualk occupied a large empty building on the Old Kent Road in South London which they turned into a base for their activities and a co-operative for artists, musicians and writers as well as a centre for radical political activism. They never record in a 'proper' studio (not that they could ever afford to), choosing instead to work with their own extremely basic equipment. If Bourbonese Qualk have a legacy, it is that 'culture' should be reclaimed, re-defined and owned by the people, wherever they are, however small and not by the state or the market and that 'culture' is a vital vehicle for debate and radical change. Laughing Afternoon was the group's first long player, released on their own Recloose Organisation label in 1983. It features Simon Crab, Julian Gilbert and Steven Tanza. It's a masterpiece of early DIY Electronic/Industrial music and is available on CD for the first time now."

The title track is a cinematic tale, a sound novel about two migrant brothers hitting the shores of USA in the dawn of XXth century to became vicious gangsters. "Hope They Wont Come Back" is severe instrumental ballad with low drums, talking bass lines, and noisy guitar riffs. Cocktail D'Amore's head honchos Discodromo strip "Voranto Bros" down to deliver an EBM style dancefloor burner. Harold Boué (Abstraxion, Lion's Drums) delivers a menacing remix for "Hope They Won't Come Back", a dark and mystic journey.

POWER, JUAN Crescendo EP 12"
Juan MacLean and Man Power debut as Juan Power for Life And Death. "Crescendo" is a nine-minute masterpiece with rickety house drums making you move while the shuffling percussion builds the pressure. Gorgeously warm chords eventually join the fray and have a blissful effect that sets you off dreaming and keeps you in a trance until the end. DJ Tennis steps up with an edit of "Excuse Me Daddy" that is deep and cavernous. "Praise The Toad" then picks up the pace with more live sounding drums and a sparkling lead synth that rises and falls to cosmic effect.

WHITESQUARE Visual Distortion of Reality 12"
Life And Death welcomes Italian artist Whitesquare for a fantastic debut on the label that includes a remix from boss DJ Tennis. "Visual Distortion of Reality" kicks things off with a brilliantly rugged bassline underlining loose hits and drum fills. "Not Moving" is a spaced-out, electro-styled cut with lithe drums and sleek synths. "Jasmine" is another trip to the stars, with a squelchy bassline and crisp snares impossible to ignore as they ride on perfectly programmed drums. This one gets a subtle Re-Match from DJ Tennis who layers in a little more synth drama and darkness as a result.

CHRISTOPHER What'cha Gonna Do? LP
"Official authorized reissue of the legendary psychedelic LP by Christopher from South Carolina. One of the absolute best American psychedelic LPs of the 1960's, and one of the rarest -- a copy went for close to $4,000 the last time an original copy sold online, and nearly double that changed hands off-line for an original! Every song is of the highest quality -- they're all self-penned too -- with an accessible sound the suggests that Christopher could have had more widespread success had they ever made it out of their native South Carolina. The What'cha Gonna Do? album was pressed in 1969 to use as a demo (which is why as few as 100 copies exist), but you'd never know it based on the overall quality of the production. When you've got blistering acid rock mixed with acid blues, with a couple of thoughtful melodic songs for good measure, you've got a recipe for something special. Christopher recorded What'cha Gonna Do? at Arthur Smith Studios in Charlotte, NC, a state of the art 8-track studio. Smith himself was a famous performer and songwriter who wrote 'Guitar Boogie' and 'Dueling Banjos.' It was the best studio money could buy in the South at the time, an astonishingly expensive $62 per hour, but the studio wasn't quite sure what to make of Christopher! The engineer, Jerry Black, introduced himself by saying, 'This is the first 8-track stereo recording of an acid rock band I've ever done' in his Southern drawl.' And so it was. The music demands your attention: well-crafted trippy lysergic lyrics about plastic capsules (and more), flanged vocals (among other effects), fine vocal harmonies, extended jamming, and a transcendent quality well expressed by the gutsy and creative guitar work. Acid rock mixed with acid blues, and lovely melodic rock songs, at times reminiscent of Corpus, Moving Sidewalks, Quicksilver, American Blues Exchange, Dragonfly, Litter (circa Emerge), Love, Tripsichord, and many others. Had Christopher's sole record been a major label release it would have been a staple in every head's record collection. An enduring work of stunning proportion. This time out, as is befitting one of the absolute best US psychedelic albums, our deluxe Lion Productions edition of Christopher's What'cha Gonna Do? We've expanded the liner notes to include even more stories from the band + complete lyrics for all the songs. Deluxe authorized reissue of one of the absolute best American psychedelic LPs of the 1960's, and one of the rarest! Includes a 12-page, full-sized booklet, with rare photos, stories from the road, and for the first time, complete lyrics to all tracks."

AGITATION FREE River Of Return 2LP
"Finally available, the long lost album River Of Return of the German krautrock legend Agitation Free. It was a reunion of the band after 25 years of abstinence with some original members. Already the first sounds show that the krautrock style still exists, but the music and the production is light years ahead, which is reflected in the very mature production. As on the early albums, the quartet consisting of Gustl Lütjens, Michael Günther, Lutz Ulbrich and Burghard Rausch offers a mixture of different styles. This time the mixture consists of rock, blues, jazz and meditative sounds. By the way, the album was produced by 'Potsch' Potschka, who was well known as a musician with the famous German Nina Hagen Band and Spliff. In addition to the eight tracks of the original album, the re-release of 'Keep On' and 'First Communication' gave the band 14 minutes of bonus material. 'Keep On' is a straight rock number, while 'First Communication' was recorded live in 1972."

MUM Yesterday Was Dramatic - Today Is OK (20th Anniversary Edition) 3LP
Triple LP version. Gatefold sleeve. Morr Music present a 20th Anniversary Edition of múm's Yesterday Was Dramatic - Today Is OK. In 1999, on December 23rd to be precise, the electronic music landscape changed forever. On that day, the now legendary Icelandic band múm released their debut album Yesterday Was Dramatic - Today Is OK. The thing is though, back in the day, hardly anybody realized. It was Christmas after all, people were busy with potentially more important things and didn't pay attention to some kids selling records on Reykjavík's high street. Thankfully, those ten tracks weren't overlooked for long. On the contrary: the album went on to become one of the most influential building blocks of what back then was called electronica and today is considered an art form playing a crucial and important role in shaping and defining the rich electronic music culture of the 21st century. Now, 20 years after the record dropped onto planet Earth, Morr Music is re-issuing the remastered album with its original artwork, adding newly commissioned re-works: a note-for-note representation of "Smell Memory" by Kronos Quartet (with additional drums by múm's Samuli Kosminen), a gentle reinterpretation of "Random Summer" by acclaimed pianist and composer Hauschka and an otherworldly new version of "Ballad Of The Broken String" recorded by label mate Sóley. In 1999, electronic music was in full bloom. Yet the concept of using electronic sounds in acoustic-based productions (or vice versa) was still in its infancy. Many producers were trying, most of them failed. The results felt often forced, fabricated, unimaginative, random, and forgettable. New ideas require new mindsets after all. With Yesterday Was Dramatic - Today Is OK, múm established a new approach in music production. Instead of setting a fixed agenda and working with a distinct hierarchy for their sonic palette, Gyða Valtýsdóttir, Kristín Anna Valtýsdóttir, Gunnar Örn Tynes, and Örvar Smárason let each instrument and sound source be true to itself, creating an ever-evolving universe of sonic bliss. Combining drill-and-bass-inspired beat-chopping, future-informed DSP-programming, ethereal vocal work, indie rock's boominess, folk music's soulful brittleness, and a lofty feeling for melody and arrangement, the album is a rare example of musical transcendence and remains impossible to categorize. Many of the ideas formulated and recorded for the album quickly became an integral part of the canonical self-conception musicians around the world were and still are aspiring to. Includes four remixes produced in the early 2000s by Ruxpin, Bix, µ-Ziq, and Biogen.

LOS SHAIN'S El Ritmo De Los Shain's LP
Munster Records present a reissue of El Ritmo De Los Shain's, originally released in 1965. Talking about Los Shain's means talking about wild sounds and uncompromising garage rock. The repertoire of the Peruvian band is full of primitive screams, dirty fast guitars, tight drums, and Farfisa organ licks, an arsenal that made them one of the leading bands of the Peruvian '60s rock scene whose great influence spread over all Latin America. Although during the previous two years they had already released several singles that foreshadowed their enormous later impact, the first Shain's album came out in 1966, when they were still in their teens. In their beginnings they looked to bands such as The Beatles and The Shadows as reference artists, but soon they would begin to pay attention to other groups into harder sounds and genres like surf or even psychedelic garage. This turning point was driven mainly by two of their members: Pico Ego-Aguirre (guitar) and Gerardo Manuel (vocals). El Ritmo de Los Shain's is mainly, as it was common practice at the time, an album of covers: from the classic "Hang On Sloopy" to the wonderful "She's Not There" of The Zombies or the timeless "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place" popularized by The Animals. The instrumentals alternate with songs with vocals, often just wild screams that could make us think of a sort of early version of The Cramps. "Shain's A Go Go" is pure garage madness and "The Monster" a straightforward tribute to bands like The Novas, while in "Vamos" the initial drum rolls make it impossible for the name of The Sonics not to come to mind. One can't help but wonder what those parties in '60s Peru were like... Presented in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180 gram vinyl.

ATOMIC FOREST Disco Roar LP
"The re-discovered third album by India's best known psychedelic-rock ensemble, presented in its entirety. The companion piece our Atomic Forest anthology Obsession. Covers of Deodato, Stevie Wonder and 'Spectrum,' the heaviest Indian psych-funk jam unearthed to date. Over the course of four years, culminating in 2011, we at Now-Again Records assembled the Atomic Forest anthology Obsession, which delved into and told the story of India's 70s rock underground and this psychedelic ensemble's story. At the time we issued Obsession, we were not aware of the third album that the Atomic Forest had recorded, issued under Kanga's name as Disco Roar. When it came to our attention, we figured that we owed it to anyone entranced by this hard-to-believe, underground, Indian rock scene to issue this, the first album that the Atomic Forest recorded. 'That Disco Roar album was the first time we were doing anything like that. It was the first thing we did. It progressed into the Hit Film Themes album. Then these guys came with more commercial potential songs (which became Obsession '77). But originally it was just a band, the live performances that we did, that made us very popular, these simple songs,' guitarist Abraham Mammen recalls. Atomic Forest's story stands in for the untold stories of many of India's underground bands, bands remembered vividly by those who witnessed their performances, bands that often homemade, cassette recordings -- that have been lost to time. Mammen, now a traveling preacher splitting his time between India and the United States, reflects on the unlikely reissue of the Atomic Forest's recordings: 'What's left of the Atomic Forest? It's just like smoke: smoke on the water.' With the release of Disco Roar, that smoke keeps rising."

TOMAGA & PIERRE BASTIEN Bandiera Di Carta LP
Bandiera Di Carta represents the ongoing collaboration between instrument builder and composer Pierre Bastien and the London based experimental duo Tomaga (Valentina Magaletti and Tom Relleen). Bastien has been called a "mad musical scientist with a celebrity following" by The Guardian (UK) having collaborated with the likes of filmmaker Pierrick Sorin, fashion designer Issey Miyake, singer and composer Robert Wyatt as well as Aphex Twin, who released three of his albums on his label Rephlex. Tomaga have made more than a dozen records since forming in 2014. They collaborated on the CAN Project with Thurston Moore, Malcolm Mooney, Deb Goodge, and others in 2017. The artistic collaboration between Pierre and Tomaga began with two commissions: from Fructose Festival in Dunkirk and the revered underground festival Supersonic in Birmingham UK. Recording initially at a studio in the industrial port of Dunkirk, the uneasy bond between borders and states seems to have been a theoretical motor to the collaborative sessions, as well as the bleak landscape of the seaport frontier. This inspiration found further manifestation in the cover image for Bandiera Di Carta. Resembling a white paper flag, it is, in fact, a photograph of Bastien's paper and air sound machine installed on stage at Teatro Carignano in Turin as part of the trio's performance there. This charged, ambivalent image of a blank flag evokes the transcendence of the national, a prescient visual motif that meditates on the contemporary uncertainty around notions of national identity and borders but perhaps also a "carte blanche" for the artists involved. For each piece, Bastien's unique sonic style: by turns his kinetic mechanoid motors, capriciously arrhythmic pipes, or the peculiar susurrus of paper, creates a world in which Tomaga introduce their musical palette. Magaletti's percussion anchors these sometimes chaotic forces into beguiling syncopations, with Relleen's synthesizer and organ work creating harmonic counterpoints and interruptive provocations, to which Bastien responds with lyrical turns on prepared trumpet, rubber band, tin foil, and bass ocarina. The results are curiously evocative of free jazz by the likes of Sun Ra or Art Ensemble of Chicago paired with the percussive sound worlds of artists like Francis Bebey or Muslimgauze along with unique and sometimes bizarrely exotic tonal landscapes of composers like Catherine Christer Hennix, Carl Stone, or Egisto Macchi. Mixed and mastered by Rashad Becker.

Few albums have treated human voice and drone as a whole entity like ABoneCroneDrone, the third in a trilogy for Real World Records that this record closed back in 1996. In Sheila Chandra's own words: "it was about the gateways between vocal techniques from different cultures and how it was possible to cross between them within a single word or phrase." With the help of bagpipes, didgeridoos and guitars, ABoneCroneDrone puts drones under the microscope and encourages listeners to retrain their ears to hear the nuances that musicians have always heard in them. Emitting low, chant-like waves, Chandra sings deep spaced atonal words while haunting chord sounds flow and drones slowly interact with listener. First vinyl pressing includes a fold-out insert with a new Sheila Chandra interview, original sleeve notes edited by Chandra herself and unseen pictures taken from the 1996 sessions; Edition of 500.

VA Girls In The Garage Volume 6 LP
Past & Present presents Girls In The Garage Volume 6, the sixth volume of a series of garage rock compilations focusing on female artists. Prior to Joan Jett, Patti Smith, Courtney Love, there were the girls in the garage. Like their male counterparts had discovered, being in a band was not only cool and alluring, it was sexual and ultimately political. The garage band was a medium that enabled their voices to be heard; these girls weren't going to be kept in the kitchen. Like Pebbles did for the boys, Girls In The Garage captures the raw essence of dreams played out through guitars, drums, mics and amplifiers. Prevailing gender roles would be tested as rock'n'roll became someone else's domain: the girls! Although it's been said that it was rare for a girl group to play on their own records in the mid-1960s, they were not alone. On both sides of the Atlantic, cynical producers largely employed session musicians, afraid of any conceivable faults at the hands of inexperienced groups, male and female. The ones who didn't were visionaries that believed in a new generation's ambitions and capabilities. As the rise of a female presence in rock 'n' roll rose through the appearance of figures such as The Vejtables's Jan Errico, The Honeycombs's Honey Lantree, and the Maureen Tucker (whose deliberately primal technique is such an undervalued part of the Velvet Underground's sound), so too did the rise of all-female bands. Liverpool's Liverbirds and Hull's Mandy And The Girlfriends gave weight to the idea that it was 'normal' and paved the way for likeminded girls to drop the dream boy and pick up the guitar. The prevailing attitude amongst both major and independent record labels was never going to be inspiring or welcoming, but like the wailing blues mamas such as Memphis Minnie or Jessie Mae Hemphill, times were-a-changin' and girls didn't just want to have fun. Emerging groups such as The Pleasure Seekers, White Boots, Ace Of Cups, Bittersweets, and The Luv'd Ones were playing rock 'n' roll on their own terms whilst breaking new ground; whether they were trying to or not. Features: Kari Lynn, Pat Downey & The Vistas, Dori Peyton, Cupons, Ellaine & The Shandells, Crazy Girls, Jonna Gault, Mille Rogers, Karin Krogh & The Public Enemies, Tacey Robbins, Donna Loren, Fatimas, Karen Verros, Roberta Wolfson, and Venus Flytrap. 180 gram light blue vinyl, hand-numbered sleeve with full-color four-page vinyl booklet.

MCPHERSON, DONALD Some Songs LP
Alga Marghen present a reissue of Donald McPherson's Some Songs LP, self-released in 1994 in an edition of 20 lathe-cut. As Stefan Neville, coordinator for this edition, suggests: "... the first time I heard anything about Donald McPherson was when my friend David Muir told me excitedly about this guitarist from Ravensbourne who could play really beautifully properly but also just as wonderfully wrongly. I first heard him playing a rare live performance in Dunedin in about 1997. It remains one of the most heavily self-deprecating sets I've ever seen. Abandoning songs halfway through, Donald couldn't contain his belief that his efforts were worthless and that he hadn't practiced as much as we were idiots for listening. He made a good show of appearing not to care but the quality of the few pieces of music he did play showed a personality and idiosyncratic natural ability that could only come from the most meaningful places. And he was totally right... we were idiots tolerating any old shit, just as he was an idiot for being so ridiculously good. Donald is most well-known for the free range guitar instrumentals of his Bramble CD (Metonymic, 2001) and the Vinegar & Rum (WEAVIL 012CD/LP, 2006) collaboration with Tetuzi Akiyama, but it's his 1994 album Some Songs that his friends and fans hold in the highest regard. It sparkles with beauty, wit, and wonder and it crumbles under its own self-sabotaging cynicism. Lyrical flowing folk melodies with playful irritations and grafted on textures, bare-boned hyper-sensitive pop songs, and scrambled spontaneous sketches. Donald always sounds to me like he is resisting his talents as they are too embarrassing, but at the same time embracing the chance to express everything he is feeling no matter how awkward or humiliating it may be. It seems like such a crippling difficult perspective to create from but Some Songs always sounds playful, honest, humble and hopeful to me!" Includes extra tracks taken from Decap (1995) and The Trees (1996) 7" lathe editions. Edition of 200.

ACID KING Busse Woods LP
LP version. "Every small town encompasses that one long stretch of forest where kids run to get high, jam out, and just escape. For San Francisco-based stoner metal trio, Acid King vocalist, guitarist, frontwoman, and mastermind Lori Woods, Busse Woods offered such a retreat in her native Illinois as a teenager in the '70s. This 3,700-acre section of the Cook County Forest Preserve system beckoned her during high school with its buffet of dope, frisbee challenges, and Black Sabbath blaring from numerous trunks well past sundown. Those days left such an imprint on Lori she titled Acid King's second full-length released in 1999 Busse Woods. Celebrating its 20th year with a special reissue on Riding Easy Records and tour in 2019, it represents the heart and soul of the band. The album still exudes the same sense of mysticism it did upon release in 1999. As the story goes, Lori and bandmates Joey Osbourne (drums) and Brian Hill (bass) entered a practice space to write the full-length follow-up to their debut Down With The Crown. Organically, they jammed out five originals and a take on '39 Lashes' from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar. As everything gelled, they recorded with legendary engineer Billy Anderson. Prominent Bay Area artist Frank Kozik initially released the CD on his Man's Ruin record label. Then 'everything fell apart.' Behind the scenes, personal and professional relationships crumbled. Marriages ended. Lineups shifted. In the face of such tumult, the music of Busse Woods rarely got its due on stage in the aftermath, even though the aesthetic would prove influential. In the middle of various reissues and re-releases, Acid King kept touring internationally throughout Europe and Japan from 2005-2015. In between this time, they jammed on riffs and started to craft songs but ultimately didn't kick it into high gear to finish the release until 2015. They reawakened in the studio with the 2015 opus, Middle Of Nowhere, Center Of Everywhere. While the new music caught critical acclaim and fan approval, a funny thing happened, and Busse Woods also came back to life. Its songs would generate the most streams on Spotify. They'd generate loud responses in concert and became their most critically acclaimed release to date. The stars aligned. Twenty years down the line, it felt only right for Lori and Co. to revisit this landmark and give it the proper tour it deserves."

FLATY Generic TARGZ LP
Soda Gong presents a razor sharp collection of rigorous and imaginative new music from Moscow-by-way-of-St.Petersburg-based musician and producer Flaty (Evgenii Fadeev, aka ??? ????-??????). Generic TARGZ places Flaty's precipitously complex drum programming and keen ear for atmosphere and space at the forefront, offering up a dynamic array of techno, ambient, generative footwork, and other tougher to pigeonhole rhythmic experiments. It is a dizzying and cohesive document in which ethereal productions, such as "Praaai" wherein a bewitching vocal pad hovers over delicate, pin-prick percussion, sit comfortably alongside tightly controlled chaos, as with the synapse-knotting "Thread" and heavy-hitting "Horn of Plenty". Over the past few years, Flaty has released a wealth of diverse and uniformly excellent music under monikers such as AEM Rhythm Cascade, Dada Ques, and Wrong Water. He is most closely associated with the influential GOST ZVUK label, but his work has also appeared on imprints such as 12th Isle, Muscut, and his own ANWO Records. Although Flaty serves as his primary alias, Generic TARGZ is only the artist's second full-length under the moniker, following 2016's New Suggestions, a high-water mark in the impeccable GOST ZVUK catalog. Flaty recently produced Kedr Livanskiy's album "Your Need (2MR 043CD/LP/LTD-LP). Mastered by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering. Artwork and design by Alex McCullough and Niall Wynne Lewis. VA Esa Presents Amandla: Music To The People 2LP
Soundway release their first compilation of 2019: Esa Presents Amandla: Music To The People. Growing up in Cape Town, South Africa, during the last days of Apartheid, Esa Williams recalls the immense power that music had in resisting oppression and division. "Amandla, Awethu", which literally means "the power is ours", was a ubiquitous chant echoing throughout the politically charged atmosphere of the time -- a call to unite, and a call from which this release derives not only its title, but its intention as well. "Music was a crucial way of bringing people and communities together", reflects Esa, "and it's what I hope to achieve with this compilation, too". For Esa is not only a musical polymath but also passionate about connecting people through music -- be it as a skilled DJ, an educator in production, a band leader reigniting the legendary Ata Kak band from Ghana, or a collaborator with the likes of Tanzanian artist Mim Suleiman. A firm favorite on the DJ circuit, he held a monthly residency at Phonox London for over six months -- bringing guests such as Nu Guinea to Brixton audiences -- as well as delivering memorable sets at Dekmantel, Atlas Festival, Boiler Room, and more. The last few years have seen a recent surge in interest in South African music from the '80s and '90s, including bubblegum, which was recently showcased on Soundway's critically acclaimed 2018 compilation Gumba Fire: Bubblegum Soul & Synth Boogie In 1980s South Africa (SNDW 124CD/LP), put together by DJ Okapi. It was only natural that the label looked to delve deeper into the country's rich musical legacy and tap another of its esteemed ambassadors for the role of compiler. The result is a rainbow of complementary electronic styles hailing from not only South Africa but further afield, including zouk from Brazil and the French Antilles, as well as Afro-futurism. Together, they form a comprehensive picture that connects the dots of Esa's musical journey -- from growing up in South Africa, to artists he has encountered in his worldwide travels who have helped develop his identity as a musician. Features Penny Penny, Alaska, Ze Spirits Band, Esa, Nonku Phiri, Dion Monti, Os Panteras, Pascal Latour, Boulo, Masalo, Doussou Koulibaly, Narchbeats, and DJ Spoko. RIYL: Nozinja, Black Coffee, Gumba Fire, Dekmantel "Best Of" compilations, Kokoko!, DJ Khalab, Palms Trax, Masalo, Ata Kak, Awesome Tapes From Africa.

75 DOLLAR BILL I Was Real Cassette
Cassette version. 75 Dollar Bill is one of the essential groups at the heart of NYC's underground. Driven by the telepathic union of Che Chen's microtonal electric guitar and Rick Brown's odd metered percussion their long-form sound is unmistakable and compelling. On their third album I Was Real, the group expands in bold new directions, embracing brilliant fuller orchestrations, joyous rockers and entrancing new textures. Having emerged as a vibrant musical force with their previous effort -- with Wood/Metal/Plastic/Pattern/Rhythm/Rock (GB 047CD, TW J CS/LP, 2016) -- 75 Dollar Bill have spent the last few years bringing their music to new places and people, delivering what NYC locals have known for years, with their dedication to performance in venues of all shapes and sizes. The fruits of this work can be heard here on their expansive new double-LP I Was Real. The album, its title's origin a jumbled misremembering of the lesser-known Motown song "He Was Really Saying Something", is 75 Dollar Bill's third, featuring new directions accompanying the band's previously established interest in sprawling, unusual grooves and microtonal melodies. The record is enhanced by the presence of eight additional players in various combinations over its nine tracks -- but also shows off the duo's strength when stripped down to the core. Requiring a variety of approaches, the album was recorded over a four-year period, in four different studios, with the band's closest associates and collaborators in a range of different ensemble configurations. The album also features several "studio as instrument" constructions that harken back to the collage-experiments of the band's early cassette tapes, while at the same time pointing to territories altogether new. The players involved highlight the "social" aspect of the band and the eight guests that appear on the record are some of the band's closest friends and collaborators. Some pieces were conceived in the band's very early days and others are much newer, but the music is unmistakably 75 Dollar Bill. As Steve Gunn said about the previous record: "Strings come in underneath Che Chen's supreme guitar tone. Rick Brown's trance percussion offers a guiding support with bass, strings, and horns supporting the melody. They have gathered all the moving parts perfectly."Personnel: Rick Brown - plywood crate, hand and foot percussion, crude horns; Che Chen - 6 and 12-string and quarter-tone guitars, percussion; with: Sue Garner - guitar and bass guitar; Cheryl Kingan - alto and baritone saxophones; Andrew Lafkas - contrabass; Karen Waltuch - viola; Jim Pugliese - percussion; Barry Weisblat - signal processing, Casio SK-1; Steven Maing - quarter-tone guitar; Carey Balch - hi-hat.

CLANDESTINE QUARTET, THE One for the Fossa, Two for the Wolverine LP
ThirtyThree ThirtyThree present the debut LP from the Clandestine Quartet, bringing together Alan and Richard Bishop with Michael Flower and Chris Corsano. Invited to perform in London as part of the St John Sessions series, Alan Bishop rounded up this quartet of underground stalwarts with a deep history of collaborative ventures -- the Bishop brothers making up two-thirds of the legendary Sun City Girls, Richard Bishop and Corsano comprising two parts of psychedelic juggernaut Rangda, and the Flower-Corsano Duo having wowed audiences for over a decade with their face-melting brand of eastern-tinged free shred. The quartet spent four days in the studio developing material for the London show and recording the seven pieces heard here (five across the LP, accompanied by two digital bonus tracks). They settled, for the most part, on something approaching a classic rock quartet line-up: Richard Bishop on electric guitar, Michael Flower on his signature amplified "Japanese banjo" (an Indian keyed zither), Alan Bishop on bass, and Chris Corsano manning the drums. Rather than a straight-up improvised blowing session, the LP strikes a balance between free-flowing spontaneous interaction and structured surprise, alternating between zoned-out group meditations and stop-on-a-dime unison dynamics. On the epic side-long opener "Don't Hang From My Ceiling", a lyrical weave of guitar, bass, and Japanese banjo lines approaches the unhurried melodic invention of Indian classical music until Corsano's tumbling, free-form drums incite the quartet into an ecstatic crescendo, over which Richard Bishop's guitar unfurls a euphoric solo that calls to mind the mystical grandeur of prime Popol Vuh. The B side finds the quartet branching out both in terms of instrumentation and compositional strategies, crafting a suite of pieces that, like classic Sun City Girls, move unexpectedly from tightly locked bass and drum grooves to explosions of free jazz alto saxophone (courtesy of Alan Bishop) and from shimmering guitar jams to massed choirs of horns. "(So Long) Harry Dean", one of the record's highlights, finds Richard Bishop on piano, leading the quartet through a languorous series of chords punctuated by Corsano's gracefully ungainly percussive accents, before a sudden blast of reed horn announces a passage of rapid-fire dissonance that seamlessly transitions back into the pianistic meandering of the track's first-half. Effortlessly balanced between improvisation and composition, melody and noise, rhythm and space, the Clandestine Quartet is a fitting next step for this group of psychedelic troubadours.

A double-LP vinyl version of Claire M Singer's previous two CDs: Solas excluding the piece "The Molendinar" (TO 101CD, 2016) and Fairge (TONE 059CD, 2017). Gatefold sleeve.Sides 1, 2, and 3: Solas. Solas ("Light" in Gaelic) is Claire M Singer's debut album, spanning 14 years of her work in acoustic and electronic composition. In recent years she has focused on writing and performing a mix of organ, cello, and electronics with regular performances at Union Chapel, where, as Music Director, she runs a diverse program of concerts and educational workshops around the chapel's organ, which was built by Henry Willis in 1877. Solas comprises seven works for various combinations of organ, cello, and electronics, including "Eilean," which is an electronic work derived from recordings of cello, piano, and violin. "Solas" and "Wrangham" were recorded by Iain Berryman at Union Chapel, London, February 26-27th, 2016 on the organ built by Henry Willis in 1877 Mixed at Bennachie Studios, Aberdeen and EMS Goldsmiths, London. Violin extracts on "Eilean" from Land of the Standing Stones composed and performed by Paul Anderson. "Eilean" was commissioned by Aberdeenshire Council.Side 4: Fairge. Fairge, meaning "the ocean" or "the sea" in Scottish Gaelic, is a single 21-minute piece for organ, cello, and electronics, composed, performed and produced by Singer. It is very much a companion work to the title track on her debut album Solas. Commissioned by Amsterdam's oldest building and parish church Oude Kerk, Fairge premiered at the church in February 2017. Claire M Singer's performance on the Ahrend and Bunzema organ, cello, and electronics is truly captivating. The work very much encapsulates her signature style of expansive soundscapes full of intricate textures, rich overtones, and powerful swells, emotionally resonating from beginning to end. Recorded by Clare Gallagher at Oude Kerk, Amsterdam, June 12th, 2017 on the transept organ built by Ahrend & Brunzema (1965).

CONJUNTO MIRAMAR Cumbias con el Miramar LP
"Cumbias con el Miramar is a very hard-to-find, sought-after album released by Discos Fuentes in 1965. Full of excellent cumbias and gaitas for dancing, the record actually is a lot more diverse than the title leads one to believe, as there are lots of other hot rhythms and arrangements on it, taken from Cuban genres like guajira, guaracha, guaguancó, charanga and son montuno . . . Throughout the album the very simple, spare elemental sound is consistent. The band members at this time included Darío Restrepo (aka 'Guayabita') on piano, Rubén Darío Restrepo ('El Mago') on guitar, Héctor Quintero on saxophone, clarinet, flute, xylophone and vocals, Hugo Gil ('Chamizo') behind the drum set as well as on tumbadora (conga) and vocals, with Hernán Builes being the band's director and bassist (and occasional accordionist) . . . Soon afterCumbias con el Miramar was released, Builes reformatted the line-up and instrumentation, updating the sound to reflect recent developments in Caracas, San Juan and New York, adding vibraphone in the fashion of The Joe Cuba Sextet , renaming the group Sexteto Miramar and debuting the groundbreaking album ¡Salsa! Mi Hermana . . . Interestingly, Cumbias con el Miramar contains superior versions of 'Cumbia del sol' -- arguably one of the band's most famous and internationally influential songs -- and 'Lelogua', both of which had also been recorded earlier for their Zeida LP. In addition, several other tunes from the record -- 'Cumbia loca', 'Cumbia de estrellas', and 'Noche y cumbia' -- have been popular among DJs, 'sonideros' and dancers for 50 years. But while these cumbias form the backbone of the album and situate it firmly in the folklore of the band's native Colombia, the LP's Cuban-styled songs like 'Mensaje guajiro' and 'Lelogua' point to the other obsession of Colombian audiences, namely that of Afro-Antillean music (that would be marketed as 'salsa' in the following decade). The album offers us a fascinating snapshot of a pivotal period in Colombian music when outside influences (such as salsa from New York) and the wildly popular phenomenon of so-called 'raspa' or 'chucu-chucu' cumbia groups from the interior (described as 'paisa', i.e. not from the Afro-Colombian coastal regions where cumbia began) were initiating a transition from the old sound (and generation) to the new..." BARRIENTOS Y SU ORQUESTA, LITO Very Very Well LP
"Colombia spawned several big band tropical orchestras in the 1930s and 40s, perhaps the most famous being those of Lucho Bermúdez, Pacho Galán, Edmundo Arias, Pedro Laza, and Crescencio Camacho. Their wall of sound combining a battery of brass, woodwinds and reeds, multiple vocalists and prominent percussion was overwhelming and eventually became all the rage with middle- and upper-class audiences from the dance hall to the hotel ballroom, from the Victrola to the radio. This formula was a match made in heaven, combining elements of the big urban swing jazz bands of the USA with the typical rhythms of Colombia's tropical coastal regions and other Caribbean locales like Cuba and Puerto Rico. Into this scene came Rafael 'Lito' Barrientos (1915-2008), an orchestra leader and trombonist originally from Armenia, El Salvador who began by playing the marimba salvadoreña in a 'costumbrista' folkloric band in his home country, but who soon took up the trombone and the conductor's baton and eventually found international success by adopting, and adapting, the previously mentioned big band tropical format. Having founded his orchestra in 1945. Barrientos traveled throughout North, Central and South America, picking up influences and musicians along the way, staying for a fruitful period in Colombia, where he recorded the extremely popular LP Very Very Well for Medellín's Discos Fuentes in 1965, following that up with Ritmos Costeños (released by Fuentes as well), but debuted in Colombia some time earlier with Pimienta on the Barranquilla-based Tropical label. Significantly, Barrientos was the composer of that perennially popular classic of tropical music, 'Cumbia en do menor' (Very Very Well contains the definitive version) and if he had achieved nothing else, this accomplishment might perhaps have been enough to enshrine him in the annals of cumbia history forever. But the award-winning Barrientos also composed hits such as 'Son guanaco' and 'Pájaro picón' and frequently experimented with new sounds, never dedicating himself solely to the cumbia . . . While in Colombia in the mid-1960s, he found great success with his assimilation of styles like cumbia and porro, but also included Cuban charanga, Puerto Rican bomba and Mexican corrido in his repertoire, making for a very diverse selection of moods and flavors, a recipe that was sure to satisfy the eclectic tastes of his international audiences..." --Pablo Yglesias, aka DJ Bongohead Part of Vampisoul's reissue series of classic Fuentes LPs. SPIEGEL, BRUCE Time Remembered: The Life And Music Of Bill Evans DVD
"This multi award-winning documentary tells the story of jazz pianist Bill Evans' turbulent life and his contribution to jazz music. Features over 40 interviews, including several renowned musicians: Tony Bennett, Billy Taylor, singer Jon Hendricks and jazz drummer Joe LaBarbera. The film also compiles a wide range of historical information about the jazz pianist including his first TV recording which appeared on CBS Look Up and Live in April 1958, playing 'Come Rain or Come Shine'. With the passage of time, Bill Evans has become an entire school unto himself for pianists and a singular mood unto himself for listeners. There is no more influential jazz-oriented pianist and Evans has left his mark on such noted players as Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, and Brad Mehldau. Borrowing heavily from the impressionism of Debussy and Ravel, Evans brought a new, introverted, relaxed, lyrical, European classical sensibility into jazz -- and that seems to have attracted a lot of young conservatory-trained pianists who follow his chord voicings to the letter in clubs and on stages everywhere. 'This film took me eight years to make. Eight years of tracking down anybody who knew Bill and who played with him, to try and find out as much as I could about the illusive and not easy to understand Bill Evans. I feel very honored to have had the chance to interview and get to know good guys that spent a lot of time with Bill: Billy Taylor, Gene Lees, Tony Bennett, Jack DeJohnette, Jon Hendricks, Jim Hall, Bobby Brookmeyer, Chuck Israels, Paul Motian, Gary Peacock, Joe LaBarbera. It was a once in a lifetime experience talking to these gifted talented guys about their time in jazz music, about their 'Time Remembered' with Bill Evans.' --Bruce Spiegel, producer"
