FLEET.DREAMS Baskets of Gold 12"
Coming off 2018's acclaimed electronic soul release Fleet Magic on Andrew Morgan's PPU Records, Baskets of Gold highlights producer fleet.dreams' percussive exchange into the world of dance. The nuanced artist now calls Detroit home, and the latest work evokes the spirit of the region's deep musical history. It's a little later in the night, still soulful, but the palette has shifted. After locating the errant poet àj magic wandering the high deserts of the southern US, the longtime collaborator arrived to narrate the journey. The result is a mini-album that sparkles. "Weird as fuck but highly entertaining." --Bill Brewster

RELAXER Coconut Grove 2LP
"Coconut Grove started as a secret. I wrote and recorded it in deliberate solitude over the course of a year, in long sessions when I was alone at home or after everyone else had gone to sleep. I had the uncanny sense of discovering something quite old rather than of making something new. Every album I've made revealed itself over time -- Coconut Grove snaked its way through my psyche, going back to my beginnings. While working on it, I found some notes I had jotted down back in 2006, when I was 22 and first inching away from punk towards electronic music. I wrote that I had been dreaming of something humid and menacing, melting but also alluring. I heard some of that in the haunting, dubby minimal techno of the time, and imagined it crossed with the slashing urgency of my favorite no wave and post-punk bands. I imagined the catharsis I experienced as a performer rerouted through techno's mercurial endlessness. Those visions never left me, and I've been dreaming of them in one way or another ever since. Coconut Grove folded that time back onto the present, letting me start again from the beginning. A lot can happen in a year, and, at the risk of sounding coy, a lot happened to me in 2018. Coconut Grove was an exorcism, or maybe a rebirth, but whatever it was it moved with a little extra fluidity. You can hear it for yourself, but I will say the album's softer touch is no accident. Living in that secret space, it felt good to let some air in." --Daniel Martin-McCormick aka Relaxer

HARRGA Heroiques Animaux de la Misere LP
Bristol-based collective Avon Terror Corps will release the debut album from industrial duo Harrga, aka producer Miguel Prado and vocalist Dali de Saint Paul. Prado and Saint Paul chose the name "Harrga", which means "a burn" in the Moroccan Darija dialect, in reference to North African migrants who burn their identification papers while attempting to illegally cross borders into Europe. Héroïques Animaux de la Misère is their debut release and is described as "a meditation on the horror of that which crevasses borders." Combining Miguel Prado's caustic industrial electronics with the hostile vocal performances of Dali de Saint Paul, who sings in French, Darija, and English, Harrga conjure the horrors of the migration crisis whilst paying tribute to those most affected by them. "A? Vif" features Moor Mother.

CATTANEO, HERNAN Balance Presents Sunsetstrip 2LP
Balance presents Sunsetstrip is the next plateau of concept mixes. Featuring tracks by established, and new producers, such as DAVI, Khen, and more, plus a host of exclusive original collaborations, where you'll transverse multiple genres and tempos, all under the steady hands by one of the most highly regarded DJ in the industry today. Lovingly referred to as "El Maestro" by his legions of adoring fans, Hernan Cattaneo has, over the last 30 years, carved a career that eclipses all others. Fascinated by the synth-pop and post punk of the '80s, Hernan quickly discovered the futuristic sounds of dance music coming from Detroit and Chicago. Completely consumed by his new-found love, he progressed naturally to DJing. It was his life-changing residency at the epicenter of Argentinian club culture, Clubland in Buenos Aires, that he was catapulted into the global sphere by long-time friend, Paul Oakenfold. Over the years, his forays into the CD compilation market has enthralled, excited, and energized his fans. From those tentative first steps with Perfecto, through to the golden years of progressive with Renaissance, and then onto his groundbreaking Balance mixes, Hernan has always brought more than just a selection of upfront tracks, and his silky mixing skills. In his own words, Sunsetstrip represents a continuation of his legacy, by marrying his all-encompassing love of the music with his strong work ethic. Painting the perfect sonic tapestry, richly musical nuggets dovetail with consummate ease as El Maestro teases every last drop of emotion from each track. Soon, a malaise of joyous energy hypnotizes you, as you travel with the soulful journeyman into the deepest realms of his imaginations. Disc two sees Hernan in cruise control -- the more familiar side of his DJing. The opening double from Mike Griego setting the scene well, as rubbery bass, and lightly tribal percussions whisk you off to wonderland. Easily shifting through the gears, things really get going midway as the sun sets and the music takes on a different meaning. Also features Hernan Cattaneo, Soundexile, Juan Hansen, Bachir Salloum & Memory, Kevin Di Serna & Guhus, Paula Os, Mariano Mellino, Graziano Raffa, Sentre, Colle. Double-LP vinyl sampler includes download code with two full-length mixes.

WATERS, PATTY Live LP
LP version. Patty Waters is a visionary avant-garde vocalist and composer, best known for her groundbreaking 1960s recordings for the legendary free jazz label ESP-Disk. Captivated by the music of Billie Holiday, she sang with Bill Evans, Charlie Mingus, Chick Corea, and Herbie Hancock before coming to the attention of Albert Ayler, who introduced her to ESP-Disk's Bernard Stollman. The rest is history. Recorded with pianist Burton Greene, Waters' haunting 1966 debut Sings (ESPDISK 1025CD) juxtaposes a side of hushed self-composed jazz ballad miniatures with an iconoclastic take on the standard "Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair". Sharing Ayler's affinity for the deconstruction of folk idioms, Waters dismantles the tune through a series of anguished wails, moans, whispers, and screams that cemented her reputation as a vocal innovator, predating the extended techniques of Yoko Ono, Joan La Barbara, and Linda Sharrock, and cited as a direct influence to Diamanda Galas and Patti Smith's own freeform vocal excursions. The mythic side-long exposition stands as one of the 20th century's most harrowing expressions of madness and grief, its incantatory mutilation of the word "black" into a full-spectrum monochrome resounding with a particular potency at a time when battles for civil rights were erupting across the country. After recording a second ESP-Disk album in 1996 (ESPDISK 1055CD/LP), Waters disappeared from the music scene, moving from New York to California to raise her son. Her Blank Forms concert on April 5th, 2018 -- with original pianist Burton Greene as well as bassist Mario Pavone and percussionist Barry Altschul, both veterans of Paul Bley's ensembles -- was Waters' first New York appearance since 2003. Dedicated to Cecil Taylor, who had passed away moments before she took the stage, Live preserves the mournful tension that was in the air that night. Her first new release on vinyl since 1966's College Tour, the record divides the session in the spirit of her debut. Side A features a set of desolate ballads, including Waters' own classic "Moon, Don't Come Up Tonight", while the B-side puts into stark relief the fact that the fight for civil rights that Waters invoked over 50 years ago is far from over. Beginning with her rendition of "Strange Fruit", a 1937 song written in protest of black lynching and American racism, the suite's form-bending contortions also features the second-ever recording of Waters' original, exceptional lyrical take on Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman."

VA Radio Verde: Cape Verdean Dancefloor Magic (Compiled by Americo Brito and Arp Frique) CD
Arp Frique returns with a brand-new release on his imprint Colorful World Records in collaboration with Rush Hour. A compilation of 12 Cape Verdean gems assembled with the help and knowledge of Americo Brito, there is a very special story behind it. Americo Brito, who features on Arp Frique's original Nos Magia (RHSTORE JAMS11, 2018), is a proud and important member of the Cape Verdean community in Rotterdam. His story reveals the historical connections between radio, vinyl, Cabo Verde and Rotterdam's international music scene in the '70s and '80s. Cape Verdean insiders say "we export all they have to other countries, only to import it back again". Cape Verdeans have migrated all over the world, mainly to cities with big harbors, like New York, Boston and Rotterdam (Holland). Rotterdam became one of the main destinations (next to Portugal) on the European mainland. When Americo, like many of his friends and relatives moved to Rotterdam, he quickly became infected with the music virus. Surrounded on a daily basis by Cape Verdean music in Portuguese pensions and small hotels, this was where sailors ingested a dose of "sodade" through the interpretations of their beloved music by the local Cape Verdean artists. Americo took to the stage with his band Djarama in the '70s and '80s. The live music scene was buzzing and the Cape Verdean community had their own infrastructure for arranging shows, often in nightclubs where the band had to bring their own soundsystem. Interestingly, Americo didn't stick to performing and recording music. He began to spread the Cape Verdean magical secret of music across Rotterdam, Holland and beyond through radio. Americo's music collection stems from this era, also aided by his many travels across Europe to cities with Cape Verdean communities. Alongside Rotterdam local, Arp Frique, Americo unveils some of these songs: dancefloor hits and beloved radio gems known in the Cape Verdean scene by younger and older generations alike, and so far undiscovered by a "bigger" audience. The compilation showcases the worldly view of Cape Verdean music, incorporating knowledge from their travels in their compositions. It ranges from the obvious funana and coladeira, to the more unexpected influences of deep disco, new wave, up-tempo reggae, jazz-funk, and Brazilian pop music. Features Cabo Verde Band, Americo Brito & Djarama, Cabo Verde Show, Elisio Vieira, Vlu, Galaxia 2000, Mendes & Mendes, Danny Carvalho, Jose Casimiro, and Zeca & Zeze Di Nha Reinalda.

MOLATZI, BEN No Way To Go LP
"Ben 'Tukumazan' Molatzi (1954 -2016), a self-taught singer and songwriter from Tsumeb, Namibia, wrote timeless, beautiful ballads drawing on the distinctive melodies and harmonies of his Damara and Sotho heritage. His music recordings have been slumbering in oblivion in Namibian radio archives. His songs were consciously censored and damaged as its messages did not please the South African apartheid regime. The album contains field and studio recordings that were made in 1981 by SWABC. To this day, these recordings have never been commercially released. In his liner notes, Thorsten Schütte describes his ultimately successful search for Ben Molatzi and further meetings with the artist, who talks in detail about his life, his songs and the life circumstances in his country. The exhibition 'Stolen Moments - Namibian Music History Untold' (until 09-21-2019 in London's prestigious Brunei Gallery) documents the Namibian pop underground of that time. Bear Family proudly presents Ben Molatzi's No Way To Go on our Cree Records world music subsidiary in co-production with Stolen Moments and the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation -- The first official album release with master recordings of Namibian musicians from a hitherto undiscovered cultural epoch. Artwork by local artist John Muafangejo. High-quality 180-gram pressing limited to 1,000 copies!"

BRO DAVID Modern Music from Belize LP
"The Caribbean has long been an incubator for the sounds that will animate and shape the culture of the rest of the world for decades to come: From the rhythms of Cuba helping to shape American jazz, blues and rock n' roll, to Trinidadian calypso introducing a bouncy lightness and gaiety to American party music, to Jamaica's reggae showing a new way to rebel against convention. But what about the music of Belize, the Caribbean nation that holds the odd position of being a former British colony on the coat of Spanish-speaking Central America? Most people don't know about the country at all, let alone about the rich sounds it has to offer. Bredda David Obi set out to change that in 1984 with the release of his debut LP No Fear, and the introduction of a new Belizean groove he called kungo (or cungo). A mélange of traditional Belizean brukdown music and sprinklings of the rock, funk, calypso and reggae he had played in various bands during his years as a journeyman musician in the United States. He would further develop this modern tropical sound on subsequent albums, integrating more and more elements from Belizean niche genres like sambai and paranda. Cultures of Soul is proud to take part in documenting Bredda David's journey into the soul of Belize with an anthology of his early recordings including tracks from No Fear, Cungo Musik (1987) and We No Wa No Kimba Ya (1990) albums. Bredda David's kungo is hard to describe exactly -- its various ingredients make it feel somewhat familiar, but the recipe with which he blends them is slightly strange, fresh and intriguing. But one thing is for certain, it is sure to electrify the dance floor and make everybody jump up and bruk down! Housed in a gatefold jacket with extensive liner notes by Uchenna Ikonne."

KING SALAMI & THE CUMBERLAND THREE Kiss My Ring CD
"Kiss My Ring is the fourth full-length studio album from London-based rhythm 'n' blues garage rockers, the follow-up to 2017's Goin' Back To Wurstville. It features fourteen tracks, a mix of brand new original compositions and the band's eclectic choice of covers. The album was recorded at London's legendary Gizzard Studios by Ed Deegan (Holly Golightly). The band truly represents the best of multi-cultural London, the members having a mix of Caribbean, French, Japanese and Spanish heritage. With a repertoire influenced by many of the great songs of the '50s and '60s made to sound fresh and new to modern ears, you won't be able to help but move your feet when the Cumberland Three are blasting out of your speakers. The King howls like Screaming Jay Hawkins with Bo Diddley chasing his coat-tail whilst Andre Williams tries to offer up some of his bacon fat, and the Trashmen do the Surfin' Bird behind him. This is a man that never stops shakin' and twistin' and groovin'. The Cumberland Three (former members of punk rock bands, including The Parkinsons) rock up a storm with their own branded mix of vintage rockabilly, desperate rock 'n' roll and stomping soul, with fire, energy, gusto and, above all, fun! The band has played pretty much everywhere in Europe, plus Australia, the USA and Japan, and more recently in China (Shanghai, Beijing, Nanjing, Wuhan, and elsewhere from big cities to rural villages), the Middle East, Turkey, and recently the South Pacific, and have shared a stage with the likes of the Standells, Pretty Things, Trashmen, and the Mummies, to name a few. You might have catch them starring on BBC's TV series UK's Best Part-Time Band (presented by Rhod Gilbert), and they also have 2 songs in the soundtrack of the Hollywood movie Death Race 2050 (remake of Death Race 2000) produced by the legendary Roger Corman! Equal parts rock 'n 'roll and soul, with a healthy dose of blues and rockabilly and a good bit of punk rock attitude!"

DELSOL, FABIENNE Four CD
"Fabienne Delsol's new album Four is a culmination of a year or so's activity at Toerag studios. The big change this time around is the co-production by Fabienne alongside Luke Oldfield, himself a long-time engineer and producer at Toerag. Though swathed in the same toil and tears of her previous three solo albums, Four has a more nuanced and mature sound, rooted in psych whilst retaining some snappy French pop and '60s garage styles of auld. There is also a mass of complimentary instruments, in particular the Mellotron is a welcome and worthy addition to many of the tracks. The contemporary and original songs 'I'll Never Be Lonely Again' and 'See How They Run' are masterfully crafted for Fabienne's distinct delivery, and both feature a strong '60s groove in-keeping with her trademark sound, the latter being a contender for the highlight of this classy album. As is archetypal of a Fabienne Delsol LP, carefully chosen covers are lovingly interpreted via Fabienne's delicate voice - take Lyme and Cybelle's 'Follow Me', itself a wonderful heavy-handed garage-folk jaunt, or the stunning take on the Human Beinz' second album opener 'Face', a spellbindingly solid piece - praise indeed to the assembled players on both. A lifelong devotee of "the Quo", it's no surprise then to hear Fabienne tackling a Spare Parts album track, only here 'When I Awake' is pared-back and sparkling, whilst Francoise Hardy's smouldering French classic 'J'ai Fait Du Lui Un Reve' is reimagined with a sumptuous air of the ethereal, with stark emotion in that voice and slowly building up tonal layers as the track progresses -- you'll struggle to hear anything as haunting this year."

CHILDISH & CTMF, WILD BILLY Marc Riley Session 2019 7"
"New limited edition 7" EP from CTMF! 600 copies on black vinyl! In April CTMF recorded a session for Marc Riley's BBC 6Music show. We're releasing the recordings on a new 7" EP. ''When You Stop Loving Me' was a 45 for Thee Headcoats on Sub Pop Records in the '90s. In my view it's a top tune that hasn't been played live for going on 20 years so we took this opportunity to re-introduce it. 'My Love Was Felled' -- this track nearly made it onto the new LP but didn't fit the running order I wanted. 'Hurt Me' is a great track by Thee Headcoatees. For some reason I never sang a version. I decided to travel back in time and give it a shot. In my view i do a great job! 'Pretend' is another track of Thee Headcoatees that I thought we could have a shot at. Despite being brought up on Sgt. Pepper and the Jimi Hendrix Experience we don't record much psychedelic stuff but here's our splendid rendition of another hit tune." --Billy Childish, July 2019

DOYLE, ROGER Thalia 2LP
Arguably one of the most important experimental records to emerge from 20th century Ireland, Thalia, as featured on the Nurse With Wound list, is coveted for its inventive, unpredictable, near-psychedelic brilliance, yet has remained scarce due to major label politics, meaning listeners had to fork out a ton for a second hand copy. Now readily available on its intended format, the keening, breezy logic and abstract theatric dramaturgy of Roger Doyle's work on Thalia has been reshuffled to highlight its apparent surreality and frolicking apparitions. Combining his studious research and prep work at Utrecht Institute of Sonology (then home to Roland Kayn, Leo Küpper, Jaap Vink) and the studios of Finnish Radio (Yleisradio) Helsinki with a finely honed improvisational intuition at his home studio in Malahide, Dublin, the record yields a poetic diffusion of electro-acoustic phantasms meshed with politicized and unsettling field recordings, alongside a mad, experimental solo piano piece. The three-part title track is the biggest attraction on Thalia. Acting as a sort of shamanic extension of Gaelic bardic traditions, Doyle guides the listener through labyrinthine dimensions, vacillating tape FX with stark synth pulses, fragments of "Danny Boy", and the unsettling sound of a woman wailing or even keening (a lament for the dead) in only the first minutes, the piece spirals over two sides between obtuse electronics and jump-cuts to melancholy strums, airborne melody, and rabid dissonance with the natural quality of Ireland's ever-shifting interplay of sun, rain, and clouds. The relatively brief "Baby Grand" follows as a sort of playful solo piano palate cleanser for the LP's purest electronic piece "Solar Eyes", which surely recalls the iridescent expanses of Roland Kayn or Jaap Vink's cybernetic music as much as Coil's pHILM #1 as ELpH (1994). Mastered and cut at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin.

VA DJAX Re-Up Volume 2 (DJAX-Up-Beats) 2LP
The second edition of Dekmantel's foray into the era-defining, trans-Atlantic, cult techno label that is Djax-Up-Beats, comes another re-issue of classic '90s cuts. The label say: "The Dutch label was responsible for releasing some of underground's most foundational dance music, mixing together Chicago and European artists alike, and acting as the launchpad for some of today's biggest producers. Featuring offerings from luminaries such as Felix Da Housecat, and Glenn Underground, alongside veterans such as Steve Poindexter, and DJ Skull, this second EP highlights the classic label's old-school's sound, while showcasing its diverse range, from dubbier, ambient moments, to wall-thumping, body crushing house force. Timeless music, repressed, and re-released for a new generation of DJs who covet the classic machine music. The second reissue EPs, offer a more introspective look at the label's earlier releases. Leading Volume 2 is Terrace's "Bewitched", to which DJ Richard has described as being the defining track of the label's beginnings with its "dreamy, Detroit-style techno mixed with the harder rave elements of Northern Europe". Glenn Underground's bass-roller "Real Space" weaves together soulful passion and Chicago prime beats, while Felix Da Housecat's "Temptation" -- originally from 1993 -- gets a well-earned re-release. China White, whose name doesn't get banded around as much as it should nowadays, see their ethereal hit "Theme from the Underground" get another opportunity to bliss out the more upbeat rave community. The energy turns darker with Frank de Groodt's The Operator, breaking the outer-most barriers of electro-techno with "The Mind Strike". Chicago and Dance Mania's Steve Poindexter turns out rolling, dance-energy bomb "Body Jam", while Mike Dearborn's deliverance of unreal, dry techno in "Deviant Behaviour" runs aplomb with classic drum-machine pulses, claps, and uncomfortable, yet punishing melodies. DJ Skull's "Don't Stop the Beat" rides the EP with gushings of hand claps, and gentle, early '90s warm techno color, that transport you back to a time of more informed, and conscious electronic musings, a feeling that embodies Djax's heyday. Founded in Eindhoven at the turn of the '90s, Djax-Up-Beats quickly earned an international reputation for being a key source of Chicago house, acid techno, and floor-filling, heavy-hitting, straight up underground 12"s. It's a sound that spawned the sonic aesthetics of today, and can be heard in the left field techno productions of the likes of Bjarki, Salon des Amateurs, and other erstwhile analog junkies."

STUMP VALLEY Natural Race 2x12"
Stump Valley now pop up on Dekmantel. The committed Berlin-based studio outfit head into new areas after their previous work on Uzuri, Off Minor, Dopeness Galore and No 'Label (that already had them jumping around styles and influences). Stylistic, enigmatic, and effortless. Stump Valley's Dekmantel debut EP is a smooth mélange of glossy soul, jazz, and serene house. Produced by the mysterious, and ultimately under-the-radar duo, the extended EP breezes through tropes of Balearic analog, warm Chicago sounds, yet remaining ultimately Italian. The duo, originally from Turin, prove their skills as true alchemists, as their forge hypnotic house and tropical flare through their array of drum machines, synths, and informed artistry derived from their deep stockpile of assorted records. Debuting they may be, but the Italian duo are no strangers to Dekmantel, having played at Dekmantel Festival, Selectors, and Lente Kabinet. Having released groove tracks across a whole spectrum of labels, Stump Valley's reputation even precedes them. Throughout the EP, their sound echoes that of Prins Thomas, Larry Heard, and other select funk-driven Italian live producers that are making waves in the current scene. It's a sound that's permanently upbeat, radiant, and filled with joy. Berlin-based vocalist and Max Graef collaborator, Wayne Snow, collaborates on vocal opener "Natural Race", creating a slow groove, and funk-driven tempo. The music then veers into equatorial territory, as the duos' uses of classic 707 and LinnDrum sounds evoke a sense of sunset grooves; the sound of Theo Parrish slowly winding through an Adriatic cocktail party. Further on and "Proletarians In Space" reflects the producers' more Detroit-like influences, with oscillating machine music. "Zoo Planet X" takes the sound further, with dubby pads, and old-school kicks and hats, that transport the Turin-based artists across the Atlantic with their out-of-time sonic aesthetic.

LP version. A weather station produces music: all antennas extended, barometers and thermometers on bearing. A mobile made of sound pipes tingles a modal hard-bop pattern in the wind tunnel, in dialog with a roaring screech of owls and rhythmically pounding hailstones... What kind of threatening backdrop is this? Something is wrong here. Nature is in trouble, or are the measuring instruments going crazy? In any case, that's not the kind of screech of an owl we know. The owl is evil, it is hungry! Mountain air does help. So does the high-altitude sun. Or... a bit of vitaminology. Of course, everything is completely different. The supposed weather station is the Echokammer, a studio biotope operated by Albert Pöschl in Munich Giesing. Leo Hopfinger (LeRoy) and Tom Simonetti (Mycrotom), went there to work on new tracks for their indie disco wild style duo Rhythm Police... and one of those lucky accidents happened, which scientists always rave about when they encounter a previously unknown substance. Just as Pöschl's namesake Albert Hofmann opened the gates of perception in a self-experiment, the three laboratory assistants Hopfinger/Pöschl/Simonetti came across the element H to see it roll out of the Rhythm Police in the splitting process of an isolated condensation -- hadn't there always been an "H" missing over the ten-year existence of the band name? Well then, H is there, and with the old name, the disco party is gone.

ENGELEN, WILLIAM 32 bpm LP
After Today, The Organ Has Played Beautifully Again (ET 864-05LP, 2019) Edition Telemark presents the second installment of what will become a series of LPs of sound works by Dutch artist William Engelen. 32 bpm was recorded at Kunsthalle Mannheim for an exhibition in summer 2019 and is a slowed down version of "38 bpm", previously released on Engelen's Partitur Belval in 2016. The piece -- played here by Mannheimer Schlagwerk -- is written for eight percussionists, each using a set of nine different instruments varying in their timbre and in the duration of their resonance. The composition is played in a monorhythmic pulse of 32 beats per minute and in unison. To determine the order in which the instruments are played, each percussionist draws their own path through the score consisting of a 32x32 grid of dots of different sizes, with larger dots representing instruments with long resonance and smaller dots those with short resonance. Because each musician has chosen their own path, different instruments are played at each pulse. Neither does the pulse ever change nor do the musicians play out-of-sync at any time. As the piece progresses through its five parts, more and more dots are skipped, leaving only 64 beats per musician in part five, as opposed to 320 in part 1. The composition "38 bpm" was written in 2016 and was adapted by Engelen to take into account the acoustic qualities of the atrium of the Kunsthalle Mannheim, leading to the slower tempo and a different selection of instruments, now focusing on more resonant ones. The instruments played are mokushos, wood blocks, bongos, reyongs, crotales, triangles, timpanis, gongs, and tubular bells. For the performance, each player stood at a different spot and the audience moved freely between them, feeling out the space by listening to the resonance. The piece thus turned into a sound sculpture inside the architecture of the museum. Co-release between Edition Telemark and Kunsthalle Mannheim, full-color gatefold sleeve with 12-page LP-sized booklet with photos, a reproduction of the score, and liners by Björn Gottstein, director of the Musiktage festival in Donaueschingen, and Sebastian Baden, curator at Kunsthalle Mannheim.

OVAL LANGUAGE, THE Waldkonzerte 2LP
Waldkonzerte is the second LP release by The Oval Language on Edition Telemark after Hibernation (ET 785-01LP, 2017), this time showcasing Klaus-Peter John's Waldkonzerte (woodland concerts), recorded in 2016. The Oval Language is an autonomous art project founded in 1987 in Leipzig, East Germany, by Klaus-Peter John and Frank Berendt. Since Berendt left in 1995, it has been continued by John, sometimes with collaborators, but recently mostly for solo activities. Its fields of activity have included sound-noise performances, conceptual works in open spaces, installations, land art projects, photography, and more. From the beginning, the space or location itself has been a central aspect within many of their site-specific sound-noise performances. When working at a certain location, the performers tried to not bring in anything from outside, but exclusively use material already available at the space. This way, it becomes possible to thoroughly feel out and explore the site, allowing a distinct site-specific sound to emerge that is integrated into the performance. Throughout the 1990s, the sites used often were abandoned buildings in Leipzig, available in nearly unlimited quantity, from vacant factories to unused former public bathing facilities. During the recent years, Klaus-Peter John has focused on a minimization of means and developed a unique vocal technique without amplification that he has used in a number of performances. In 2016, he attempted to integrate his voice into pure nature, in his own words the biggest challenge to date. His goal was not to perform any kind of singing or the like, but to use voice as a means similar to the site-specific tools used in previous performances by The Oval Language. He performed five concerts without audiences in a forest ravine in Döben, near Grimma, between June and November. The concerts parallel the course of the seasons and their related acoustic changes and conditions. Die-cut single sleeve with printed inner sleeves containing photos made during a Waldkonzert, allowing for four different front sleeves to be generated. Edition of 200.

BUMSTEINAS, ARTURAS Bad Weather Long Play LP
Bad Weather Long Play is a performative sound art event of a group of performers engaging with reconstructions of Baroque theater noise machines. The project started in 2017 when Lithuanian artist Arturas Bumsteinas teamed up with theater carpenter Ernestas Volodzka to re-create wind, rain, sea, and thunder imitation devices, identical to the ones whose canon settled in European theater in the 17th century. Commissioned and produced by contemporary music theater production house Operomanija, "Bad Weather" events have since been presented in Lithuania and Poland. During each performance, the ensemble plays the machines in keeping with meteorological maps and charts from various centuries that serve as scores. Contemporary artist Ivan Cheng was invited to write and perform a libretto that is integrated into every performance in different ways. In the Baroque era, the noise machines constituted only a small part of the theatrical illusion, lurking behind the scenes, invisible to the audience. Meanwhile in Bad Weather Long Play, they take the spotlight and become generators of conceptual climate. Bad Weather Long Play is a collage of sound materials from performances, rehearsals, soundchecks, and other occasions related to the project, as documented with various recording devices between 2017 and 2019. The sides of the LP don't function as A and B sides but can be played in any order. Co-release with Operomanija; full-color sleeve with printed inner containing photos of the project and liners by Salomé Voegelin and eight-page booklet reproducing Ivan Cheng's libretto.Arturas Bumsteinas (b. 1982 in Vilnius, Lithuania) is an artist working within the intersections of sound, music and art. His practices include performative sound art, radio art, exhibitions, experimental acoustic and electronic music. He started exploring theater noise machines in 2012 when he was commissioned by Deutschlandradio Kultur to compose Epiloghi. Six Ways of Saying Zangtumbtumb."Produced from a selection of recordings made at rehearsals, workshops and performances with an alternating team of seven performers, Bumsteinas convokes a work that sounds its process on the mobile blueprint of meteorological maps as scores. Creating a mis-en-scène of invisible occurrences that talk with each other in the language of a storm that is brewing, raising and petering out, and that leaves a trace in our ears, an imprint and a movement that might only clear the next day." --from the liner notes by Salomé Voegelin.

MEEK, JOE I Hear A New World/The Pioneers of Electronic Music 3CD BOX
"A presentation featuring Joe Meek's fantastical lunar stereophonic sound adventure, I Hear A New World; both the celebrated 1991 RPM restoration and the original unreleased 1960 concept album; placed in broader international context alongside seminal works by other pioneers of electronic music; from Daphne Oram to Edgard Varèse. Considered in this context, Meek's masterpiece seems less an oddball pop novelty than a daring and visionary electronic sound exploration. The legendary British pop producer came to prominence during the repressed monochrome days before the Beatles arrived to change everything; an era of fascination with all things Space Age and nuclear; a mood Meek encapsulated with his biggest hit, Telstar by the Tornados; a million selling chart-topper on both sides of the Atlantic and the first British pop single to reach Number One in America. Electronic gear and studio techniques were Meek's obsession. He would dismantle a piece of equipment and modify it in order to ramp up its capability and thought nothing of building his own compressors, equalisers and echo units. The trademark Meek sound combined an extra-terrestrial keyboard, brittle guitars awash with reverb and a spectral vocal all fiercely compressed. He constantly pushed at the frontiers of his studio's technical potential, using it as an instrument in its own right and often applying authentic musique concrète procedures in the perpetual search for new sounds. His knowledge of electronics was as advanced as anyone in Britain at the time. The establishment record labels were intimidated by Joe's inventive genius and moody eccentricity; embarrassed that he could outdo them by producing hit records from a glorified home studio above a leather goods shop on the Holloway Road."

Three exclusive Martinez Brothers tracks stud the 75-minute offering. "Jam Joint" is a hypnotic, stripped-back groover whilst the lead single "Mistakes" is a more tech-oriented offering. Roots Orchestra, aka the prodigious Timmy Regisford, brings noteworthy percussive roots slant to the New York house electronic collection. The stand-out collaboration with New York house aficionado Louie Vega on the soulful "Let It Go (TMB Alternate Version)" convincingly rounds up the comp. Double-LP vinyl release shows off 12 tracks from the compilation in their full, unmixed finery. The 12 house bangers include the two exclusive Martinez Brothers tracks: "Jam Joint" and "Mistakes". SCHERK & DANIEL MAJER, JONATHAN It's Counterpart LP
Faitiche welcomes two young artists from Canada; Jonathan Scherk and Daniel Majer hail from the post-rock and experimental scene in Vancouver, where they shared a studio for several years. In artistic terms, too, there is a surprising coherence: on It's Counterpart, their solo work naturally blends to create a joint album, making it hard to distinguish between their contributions. Majer describes his part as a shadow-like reflection to Scherk's brightly meandering collages. The album's title refers to this: It's Counterpart presents two solo artists who have met their match in one another. Scherk and Majer produce contemporary sound collages on samplers, laptops etc. using raw material drawn from YouTube videos, field recordings, cassettes, and LPs from the dollar bin -- the kind of rightly forgotten obscurities that have long since lost their audience, if they ever had one. In the hands of Scherk and Majer, they become abstract sound objects. The two artists don't concern themselves with the material's original context -- the sound's character is most important. This sets them apart from other collage artists. Their work might be called a contemporary upgrade of the classic tape collage: here, channeling a wealth of information is the main focus. Are these collages that trigger neither associations nor contexts? Au contraire! It's Counterpart is like an overheated centrifuge whose spinning extracts and joins together all of the harmonies ever pressed on vinyl. Melodies run amok. Includes download code.

MAZZOTTI, ANA Ninguem Vai Me Segurar LP
LP version. 180 gram vinyl; includes download code. Far Out Recordings present an official reissue of Ana Mazzotti's Ninguem Vai Me Segurar. originally released in 1974. An artist as imaginative and unique as Ana Mazzotti doesn't come around often. Dubbed a "super-musician" by fellow Brazilian virtuoso Hermeto Pascoal, Mazzotti's short but rich musical career culminated in just two studio albums: Ninguem Vai Me Segurar (1974), and Ana Mazzotti (1977). Outside circles of Brazilian funk aficionados, these two gems of spellbinding samba-jazz, lysergic funk and trippy bossa have remained relatively obscure. This was partly as a result of Mazzotti's premature death (she lost her battle with cancer in her mid-thirties), but also due to financial restraints and the prejudice she faced as a female songwriter in a fundamentally sexist society. Born in Caixas, in Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul municipality, Mazzotti began to play the accordion aged five, before moving with prodigious ease onto the piano. By the age of twelve she was already conducting her convent school's choir, and at twenty-one she led her city's premier chorus, the Coral Bento Goncalves. When rock n' roll hit South America in the '60s, a young Mazzotti was one of the early adopters, fronting various guitar groups including an all-female Beatles cover band, and an eclectic, eight-piece psychedelic group Desenvolvemento. Before moving to Sao Paulo to start her career proper, Mazzotti met drummer, producer, and fellow music educator Romido Santos, who she would later marry. Romildo introduced Mazzotti to jazz, and music by the likes of Chick Corea and Hermeto Pascoal who she would later befriend and perform with. In 1974, Mazzotti recorded her first album Ninguem Vai Me Segurar, enlisting the in-demand arrangement talents of Azymuth's original keyboard maestro Jose Roberto Bertrami. It also features Azymuth's bassist Alex Malheiros and percussionist Ariovaldo Contestini, with Romildo Santos who produced the album on drums. Recorded in Estudio Haway around the same time Azymuth recorded their debut album there, it's no wonder the samba jazz-funk pioneer's distinctive aesthetic is present throughout, and Mazzotti's sensational compositions are made even more beautiful for it. Kicking off with the swirling samba-jazz-dance masterpiece "Agora Ou Nunca Mais", the album hosts several groove-heavy Brazilian cult-classics. Deeper moments come in the form of the alluring future soul synth sounds on "Bairro Negro" and "Sou", and Mazzotti's tender, hallucinatory version of "Feel Like Making Love" (made famous by Roberta Flack). Remastered.

In 1977, Mazzotti took her debut album back to the studio, releasing the album with a new running order and new ethereal cover art, ostensibly another crack at commercial success following the small scale of the independently funded first release. With intimately re-recorded vocals, and the bonus of gorgeous horn arrangements and a new track: the carnivalesque "Eta, Samba Bom", replacing Roberta Flack's hit "Feel Like Making Love", Ana Mazzotti (1977) delivers Mazzotti's refreshingly cool musical style even more effortlessly, while retaining the all magical energy of her debut. NAS It Was Written 2LP
'Illmatic, the 1994 studio debut of Nasir 'Nas' Jones, was more than just a critical success for the Queensbridge-based rapper. At a time when East Coast hip-hop was increasingly being taken less seriously than their West Coast counterparts, Illmatic's raw jazz and soul-based production, dire atmosphere and lyrics, coupled with Nas' uncompromising flow was integral in restoring interest in the East Coast as a hotbed of hip-hop artistry. Along with key releases from Wu-Tang Clan and Notorious B.I.G., it shifted attention away from the funky, dayglo synth-based G-funk coming out of California and back to the grimy streets of New York. After such an unprecedented debut record, expectations were understandably high for Nas' follow-up. What came next threw critics and fans for a loop, but was no less influential than Illmatic, and would become the most commercially successful album in the entirety of Nas' discography. The 1996 sophomore follow-up was titled It Was Written, and in contrast to the urban bleakness of his debut, had Nas dipping his toes into the world of mafioso rap. Amidst production from heavy hitters like Trackmasters, Dr. Dre, L.E.S., Havoc of Mobb Deep, and Illmatic-collaborator DJ Premier, among others, Nas weaves evocative narratives of gang warfare, downtrodden neighborhoods, drug deals gone awry, and gangsta triumph, against a backdrop of samples from Sam Cooke, Etta James, the Isley Brothers, and even Chuck Mangione. It Was Written was not hard up for top-tier guests either, featuring major guest turns from Lauryn Hill and Joel 'JoJo' Hailey of K-Ci & JoJo. It also introduced the world to The Firm, the brief Nas-led supergroup featuring rappers AZ, Foxy Brown, and Cormega. It even managed to cause some minor controversy in the hip-hop community for its collaboration with West Coast producer Dr. Dre, at a time when the East Coast/West Coast rap feud was reaching a fever pitch, briefly attracting the ire of one Tupac Shakur. Not only was It Was Written received warmly by critics, but became a major commercial success, reaching the top of the Billboard 200 charts, reaching platinum sales status four times, and alongside albums like Raekwon's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, helped usher in the era of mafioso rap in the mainstream. It rendered chart hits out of singles like the Eurhythmics-mimicking 'Street Dreams', and the Grammy-nominated 'If I Ruled The World (Imagine That)', and proved to be a major influence on artists like Kendrick Lamar, Lupe Fiasco, and many more."

OL' DIRTY BASTARD Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version 2LP
2019 repress. "It's safe to say that hip-hop has never seen an album like Ol' Dirty Bastard's 1995 solo debut Return to the 36 Chambers. The brief glimpses of ODB's unhinged genius provided by Wu-Tang Clan's landmark Enter the Wu-Tang album two years earlier were begging to be expanded on to a larger canvas, and, with RZA guiding production, the album promised to give Dirty the creative license to make one of the most bizarre, entertaining and original LPs in hip-hop history. With his raspy, drunken flow and dark sense of humor, Dirty fearlessly attacks from all angles, throwing himself fearlessly into punchy rhyme attacks ('Damage,' with GZA), drugged-out party jams (the monster singles 'Brooklyn Zoo' and 'Shimmy Shimmy Ya') and bizarre, grimly hilarious fantasies of sex and violence ('Don't U Know' and the R&B-tinged 'Sweet Sugar Pie'). Backed by RZA's appropriately gritty, dissonant beats and appearances from the Clan, Return became an instant hit, selling over 1 million copies and earning a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rap Album in 1996. The album stands as a high water mark in the Wu Tang Clan's collective creative output and was selected as one of the Best 100 Rap Albums by The Source magazine in 1998. In honoring the legacy of one of hip-hop's most innovative releases, Get On Down is proud to present this incredible and unique special edition of Ol' Dirty Bastard's Return to the 36 Chambers as a double LP which contains the complete original album, remastered for optimal sound quality." This four-piece group of sonic groundbreakers have delivered a scintillating debut album. Bantou Mentale was born in Chateau Rouge and born out of Matongé. Drummer and song-writer Cubain Kabeya -- originally from the DRC, now resident in Paris -- has been in or around every big thrill to come out of Kinshasa over the past decade: Staff Benda Bilili, Konono No.1, Jupiter & Okwess, Mbongwana Star. Guitarist Chicco Katembo was part of the Staff Benda Bilili story in the early days, before moving to Paris to live with his French mother. Singer Apocalypse is an ace face on the Parisian Congo scene, an alumnus of the orchestra of Koffi Olomide, emperor of contemporary Congolese soukous. Liam Farrell, aka Doctor L, born Irish, raised Parisian, is a musician, composer, and producer with an impressive score sheet that includes Assassin, FFF, Psycho on Da Bus, Tony Allen, Mbongwana Star, Babani Koné, Nneka, Les Amazones d'Afrique. The Bantou Mentale sound is neither traditional, nor slave to the all-encompassing tropes of Congolese rumba, nor slick and arty and self-consciously stylish. They're bringing something modern, raw, open to the world. Liam and Cubain have been distilling experimental mashes of electro African beats on-and-off for years, under names like Black Cowboys or Negro-P. The sound is a gleeful borderless up-cycling of all the urban styles that Paris, London, New York, Kinshasa have been doling out to the world these past two decades, combined into something new and purposeful. There are songs like "Zanzibar" and "Sango" that lament the clandestino stuck in the desert, penniless, screwed. And songs like "Chateau Rouge" that celebrate the wild uncertainty, the liberation, the fellowship of the migrant. "Boko Haram" bemoans the intellectual subservience and social servitude of many Africans, with music that's underpinned by the pulse of the forest and propelled by roughneck riffs and phasing guitars. "Papa Jo" pays homage to an old departed friend from Kinshasa who threw the best parties in his ramshackle house. The delicious grime of "Suabala" hides a story of love, with levels of passion and guitars frolicking in the red. "Boloko" is slower, more ethereal, with its subversion of the sound of those angelic choirs of "saved" little African kids that were the pride of the missionaries. "Syria" tells you that there's no future in petrol wars, with music that's strangled, painful, urgent, tragic, with plenty of glorious distortion.

BABA ZULA Derin Derin LP
LP version. 180 gram vinyl; includes download code. BaBa ZuLa, the legendary ensemble from Istanbul, have brilliantly established themselves over the past two decades as the missing link between Turkish psych, krautrock, and dub-wise stylings. Derin Derin is the thrilling follow-up to their acclaimed retrospective XX (GB 042CD/LP, 2017), and finds the band more experimental and expansive than ever. On Derin Derin, BaBa ZuLa's first studio album since 2014, they create their art with beautiful eloquence and stinging passion. It takes wing and soars high; the instrumental portion of the disc grew out of music BaBa ZuLa were asked to record for a documentary about falcons. It grew, little by little, drawing together the elements that have been the heart of the band's sound throughout its existence: the rich wildness of Turkish psychedelia and the blinding, pure emotion that runs through traditional Anatolian music, tempered with the constant musical questing of the band's inspiration, krautrock pioneers Can, and the electro-dub experiments BaBa ZuLa has undertaken with producer Mad Professor. It's an utterly 21st century sound, where the voices are sometimes submerged, sometimes screaming loud to breaking through the noise. "U Are the Swing" is a track that carries particularly profound echoes of Can's late drummer, Jaki Liebezeit. The drum part was played by Ertel's children on a kit Liebezeit himself had modified, and Liebezeit sat in with BaBa ZuLa on many occasions. Those rhythms form the bedrock of BaBa ZuLa's sound, just as they were the foundation of the early Turkish psychedelia of the 1960s and '70s that has been a lifelong influence on Ertel. Psychedelia seeped into his soul and helped to frame his vision for BaBa ZuLa when he formed the band in 1996. And throughout their existence, they've kept their unique mix of electric saz and electric oud to give that double fretboard attack that's so markedly not Western. The psychedelic sound of BaBa ZuLa also feeds quite organically into dub. On "Eagle Got Wolf", for instance, phrases and riffs echo and hang suspended in the air as the bass dives and swoops, while plucked notes appear, only to flicker away again. Derin Derin melds the past into the present and sends it flying into the future. Derin Derin is fearless music. It's the truth. And there is hope.

ELECTRIC BANANA The Complete De Wolfe Sessions 3CD BOX
"Initially coming together during a Fontana-era lull in The Pretty Things' prodigious career, the band's now-legendary body of work for music library de Wolfe as The Electric Banana saw their alter-egos become parallel universe superstars, their work utilised by film and TV producers in everything from soft-porn skin-flicks, a Norman Wisdom vehicle and horror classic Dawn Of The Dead to small-screen ratings winners like Dr. Who, The Sweeney and Minder. In the Sixties, the Banana recordings mirrored British pop's gradual evolution into rock, courtesy of brass-led Swinging London ravers ('Walking Down The Street', 'Danger Signs'), primal garage punk ('Street Girl', 'Love Dance And Sing') and maximum psychedelia ('Eagle's Son', 'Alexander'). They switched gears again in the Seventies, confidently mixing swaggering bar-band hard rockers ('The Loser', 'Sweet Orphan Lady'), putative terrace-anthems ('Whiskey Song'), metal-based rock ('Maze Song', the Hendrix tribute 'James Marshall') and jangly, Byrds-inflected power pop ('Do My Stuff'). Taken from the original master-tapes, the 3-CD set The Complete De Wolfe Sessions represents a number of firsts: the first-ever legitimate CD issue of these recordings (authorised by both The Pretty Things and de Wolfe), the first time that the Banana's Sixties and Seventies work has been made available under one roof, and the first time that the karaoke-anticipating backing tracks have been made commercially available. Housed in a clamshell box that includes a lavish illustrated booklet, The Complete De Wolfe Sessions incorporates the original albums artwork, an extended essay on the band, quotes from pivotal members Phil May, Dick Taylor and Wally Waller, and some priceless photos of the classic 'Even More Electric Banana' line-up, taken from the summer-of-'68 Swinging Southport film What's Good For The Goose."

TYRNAROUND Colour Your Mind (Expanded Mind Edition) LP
Originally issued as a 12" mini-album in 1986, Tyrnaround's Colour Your Mind has become a touchstone of 1980s neo-psychedelia and almost certainly one of the best records of the second psychedelic era. Influenced by classic '60s British psychedelia, it was also inspired by The Dukes of Stratosphear's "25-O-Clock" and perhaps exceeds that record's trip factor with the acid-infused title track -- featured on Amorphous Androgynous Wizards of Oz compilation, and also famously covered by Vibravoid -- blending searing acid fuzz guitar, swirling keyboards, surreal lyrics, and sumptuous early Floyd-like harmonies. Now expanded to a full-length LP, including all the bands singles as well as the rare Freakbeat Magazine 45 "Paragon-Smythe" (featuring the never released before unedited version), this could be seen as Tyrnaround's perfect debut album. Trippy '60s-styled psychedelia from Australia. Comes in '60s UK styled backflaps sleeve; includes insert with unseen photos and a full history of the band by Richard Allen (Freakbeat, Delerium, Shindig!); Includes download card which includes rare demo and live tracks.

ZK Last Night LP
Having recently contributed to Goner's Yogascum LP, reissued in late 2017, Mark Godwin now returns to the Swiss label together with his musical partner Gareth Ormerod as zK. Drawing heavily on musique-concrète techniques, synthesizers, and sampling to create an immersive experience bordering on the synaesthetic, the six tracks capture the nervous energy of Thailand's capital after dark. Moving from the opener "Ouside Broadcast" with its collage-like juxtaposition of every-day sounds and squelching noise to the aptly titled "Cognitive Dissonance" and the aleatoric modular excursions of "Feral Confection" towards the more somber, lysergic undertones of the B side, ending in the both elegiac and haunting final track "Fleshpotting", Godwin and Ormerod explore the sharp contrasts which characterize the city. 180 gram vinyl.

DECLINING WINTER, THE Belmont Slope LP
LP version. The Declining Winter returns after a three-year layoff with Belmont Slope, perhaps their strongest statement to date. Pushing on from the pastoral blueprint of Home For Lost Souls (HAM 010LP, 2015), Belmont Slope is a bold and varied album, extending the boundaries of their earlier sound, introducing pop sensibilities and daring electronic flourishes. Truly a northern English album, Belmont Slope is a haphazard car ride across the M62, a love letter to the hills of Yorkshire and Lancashire, a paean to desolate beauty, unattainable love and lost friends. The Declining Winter is the brainchild of Hood co-founder Richard Adams, an ever-changing collective who emerge blinking into the daylight from their Yorkshire enclave with a unique blend of pastoral and lo-fi pop, shimmering electronics and rural post-rock. ODD NOSDAM Flippies Best Tape 2LP
Odd Nosdam came to prominence as beat-smith with experimental hip-hoppers, cLOUDDEAD, as well as being co-founder of the Anticon label. A string of critically lauded solo releases culminated in 2016's Sisters LP (title track remixed by Boards of Canada) and 2019's Mirrors LP (N 067LP) which saw the West Coast producer at the peak of his powers. Flippies Best Tape features a massive 66 tracks over four sides of wax. Digging fathoms deep in the crates, Odd Nosdam's source material comes from super rare records that you've never heard of, many of them private pressings. From plaintive deep soul cuts, gritty chitlin' circuit funk, blues-y '60s garage band sessions, through to some seriously heavy psych-rock freak-outs and all manner of weirdness in between, the scope of this record is mind bending. But it doesn't stop there, mashed up into this heady brew you'll also pick up hints of gospel, jazz, dub, and space-y West Coast acid. And the whole thing is neatly stitched together with snatches of film dialogue providing the narrative thread. So many disparate influences could make for an unfocussed smorgasbord of a record, but Nosdam has honed his skills over the years to such a degree that these 66 tracks, 80 total minutes, have been sculpted and shaped with precision into a work that is as lithe and supple as it is kaleidoscopic and exhilarating.

VATICAN SHADOW Washington Buries Al Qaeda Leader At Sea 2LP
An exclusive and outstanding Regis collaboration appears on the third volume of vinyl premieres for Vatican Shadow's early and highly sought-after tapes, as originally dispensed in 2011 during the peak years of the War On Terror. Holding all six sides from 3x hard-to-find tape "deck" issues of Washington Buries Al Qaeda Leader At Sea, plus the previously digital-only track "He Ambled Down The Dirt Road For Visits To A Market" and the aforementioned Regis exclusive; the third instalment of the series definitively compiles Vatican Shadow's impressionistic take on a turning point in 21st century U.S. geopolitics. Coupled with track titles lifted from the media and official government communiques on the subject, plus a full-length portrait of the Twin Towers prior to 9/11, the stark music suggests a perceptive void of detachment between reporting of the events' objective reality and Vatican Shadow's subjective response, beckoning listeners to read between the lines in a way that was previously deployed by two of Dominick Fernow's (aka Vatican Shadow/Prurient/Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement) key historic influences; Muslimgauze and Whitehouse. From the offset clatter of drums evoking marching boots on "People In The Compound Kept Themselves To Themselves", to the furtive pads that bleed thru "Supplying The Compound With Food and Medicine", and the elegiac gloom cast by "Peace Be Unto You", there's a nerve-edged tension to the music which surely evinces its subject in an allusively classic style. And the two new parts succinctly fall in line, with the dusky stroll of "He Ambled Down The Dirt Road For Visits To A Market" marking out one of the project's finest trip hop downbeats, while his collaboration with Regis on "See You Again Always" provides the project a new highpoint of guttural, militant, technoid pressure. With original tapes selling for triple figures on the second-hand market, this expanded definitive double-LP edition is unmissable for anyone with their head in the belly of modern electronic gloom. Mastered and cut to vinyl at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin.

RADIGUE, ELIANE Chry-Ptus 2LP
Eliane Radigue's Chry-Ptus is her very first piece for the modular synthesizer. It was composed in 1971 using a Buchla 100 which had recently been installed at NYU by Morton Subotnick. This double-LP was mastered by Golden and pressed at RTI for maximum fidelity. From the original press release: "Chry-Ptus (1971). Originally two tapes which were to be played simultaneously, with or without synchronisation, which does not affect the structure of the work, but creates changes in the game of sub-harmonics and overtones. Three variations on this piece were performed at the New York Cultural Center in 1971, with variations of amplitude and location modulation as well as synchronisation. Realized on the Buchla Synthesizer at the New York University. The booklet contains a text by painter Paul Jenkins, who also realised the watercolor on the front cover, written on occasion of Radigue's first concert in New York, April 6th, 1971. "It's with the Buchla that I constructed Chry-ptus, a piece made up of two tapes with an analogue duration, 22 or 23 minutes, which could be played either simultaneously or with a slight time difference, so as to establish slight variations every time the piece was played. I spent the first months eliminating everything I did not want; I even used a notebook in which I tried to determine a writing system resembling chemical formulae." --Eliane Radigue

GEINOH YAMASHIROGUMI Ecophony Gaia 2LP
Deep, deep, earth music from Tsutomu ?hashi and the Geinoh Yamashirogumi crew. A macrosymphony composed for the International Garden and Greenery Exposition in Osaka, Japan, 1990, Ecophony Gaia, was supposed to be the stunning, aural centerpiece for a light and water performance system echoing the sentiment of the venue: "Harmonious Coexistence of Nature and Mankind". Ecophony Gaia was in its truest essence the final part of a trilogy that began with 1986's Ecophony Rinne, continued, in 1988, with their most-known work the soundtrack to Katsuhiro Otomo's dystopian, cyber-punk film Akira (released as Symphonic Suite Akira), and this release mere months later. Looking back one can break up these releases into a holy musical trinity: Ecophony Rinne = spirit, Symphonic Suite Akira = body, and Ecophony Gaia = Gaia/earth. Ecophony Gaia is Geinoh Yamashirogumi's most hopeful release. Rebirth, the hardest thing to capture in music, is something Ecophony Gaia expounds upon through sonics and feeling. You hear this in light echoes from Symphonic Suite Akira coursing through Ecophony Gaia, acting as symbols saying: "not everything from the past needs to be discarded, that certain things, when rethought of, hold a heavier power". The Japanese Noh music you heard trapezing through Akira's "Illusion" walks positively untethered in Ecophony Gaia's "Euphony", Indonesian gong chimes that hit darkly in Akira's "Tetsuo" transform Ecophony Gaia's "Catastrophe" into the light sublime, serene music that it is. What's left over are the songs that point to new directions. Those that derive their influence from things that aren't easily quantifiable. The introduction of field recordings to a warmer palette of sound makes Ecophony Gaia Geinoh Yamashirogumi's first roots album. Of course, these roots belong to worldlier kind of music. Rhythms that sound like water coursing downstream from brook to ocean, electronic layers that hum and cycle through, string instruments that hover like atmosphere, wind instruments that sound like air and breath, and the powerful sound of human voices presenting divinity through communal chant -- those all constitute the ecosystem of Ecophony Gaia. Things that you've heard/felt before, renewed in a different luster. When you hear the album, notice how there are two sides to its whole: "Chaos" ending in "Euphony", "Catastrophe" ending in "Gaia". It would be a disservice to describe the way it sounds, it's an album based on belief not premonition. All you'll find in Ecophony Gaia are movements. Hopeful movements. Needed movement.

HANSEN, ROLF Elektrisk Guitar CD
Rolf Hansen, who as a guitarist is originally rooted in jazz, has been one of the most in-demand studio and session musician in the Danish rock, pop, and folk scene. Between 2010 and 2017, he toured under the name Il Tempo Gigante as a solo artist and released two albums: Lost Something Good (Speed of Sound, 2010) and Watch It Watch (Resonans, 2014). With subsequent tours throughout Europe, he made a name for himself in the alternative folk scene. After a phase of reorientation, he now releases his first purely instrumental record under his real name through the Berlin-based Karaoke Kalk label. On his third album, Elektrisk Guitar, the many different influences Hansen has gathered as a composer, solo performer, session musician, and producer shine through. The concept of limitation -- an album composed for and played with solo guitar -- is being mirrored in the conception of the album itself. Not only does Hansen resolutely constrain himself to a sole instrument, he also eschews traditional composition techniques and follows an experimental approach. Elektrisk Guitar is an album that enters into a dialogue with its conscious and attentive listener. Pieces whose melancholy is carefully weighed meet complex musical structures that again and again provide new challenges. In just 43 minutes, Elektrisk Guitar offers a plethora of ideas, impressions, details, and inspiration. And even more so, it opens up a room for its listeners to explore, precisely because its minimalistic compositions create a lot of space in which to get accommodated in. Apart from his solo projects, Rolf Hansen has for several years been connected to Donna Regina as well as Anders Mathiasen (formerly Murder, now Vessel, DK) and Henriette Sennenvaldt (formerly Under Byen, DK) through close collaborations.

FEJKA Reunion LP
LP version. Creating an album is a journey of self-knowledge through hindsight; putting together the tracks that will compose the oeuvre much like putting together a photo album. It involves reflecting over the memorable times that inspired each composition. That is the case for German electronic music producer and visual artist Fejká, who presents Reunion. Like with everything that involves hindsight, there is a great deal of nostalgia in the album -- and the nature of nostalgia is fluid. It can be at once sweet or melancholic, agitated, or mellow, airy or heavy, but it nonetheless invokes in all its forms a sentimental longing for something. In Reunion, nostalgia is primarily given shape in dreamlike soundscapes, soft atmospheres that nonetheless evoke strong contemplative feelings. This longing is carefully unfolded on "Youth", where a simple melody plays out over the sound of seagulls and develops effortlessly into a joyful tune. Since his EP Twilight (2017), the producer has been exploring sounds that are at once ethereal and dynamic, celestial but also very much grounded on the dancefloor. In a seamless way, Fejká crafts music that is equally suitable for introspective moods and wonders as it is for a club. But while Twilight explored this duality between dreamlike atmospheres and dance music, Reunion seems to delve into a much vaster range of emotions and approaches, cementing the young producer's eclecticism. "Untold", perhaps the most fast-tempo title of the album with punctuated beats and repetitive melodies, is not only a dance tune, but a highly emotive and contemplative song which plays out like a riddle, provoking feelings of quest and curiosity. The track couldn't be more different than "Reunion" which moves slowly and carries an ethereal melody of melancholy and insight. Another tool used on Reunion that hits hard on an emotional level, is the use of the voice. On "Reunion", friend and musician Marie Angerer contributes with haunting vocals. Putting together the album was a journey of self-knowledge, creating ten purely intuitive tracks. Having a visceral creative process means that inspiration could hit at anytime, anywhere; drafting sketches became an important way in which Fejká would capture those revelations. From then, Fejká would develop these sketches in his laptop -- a basic set-up which nonetheless permitted him to take his ideas far. The strength of the album's tracks is deeply tied to their ability to capture a mood, and convey it to the listener. Also features Rökurró.

ETANT DONNES L'opposition Et Les Cases Conjuguees Sont Reconciliees CD
"Etant Donnes is a French duo named after Marcel Duchamp's last major work. The group consists of brothers Marc and Eric Hurtado, born in Morocco and working mainly as performance artists and musicians. Their sound can be described as a mix of field recordings, found sounds and sometimes whispered, sometimes violent vocals. They describe their sounds like this: 'Through Marc and Eric, it is the volume of each word that becomes an object-sculpture, together with the power of their bodies expressing their voices. Each event is a scream -- indeed even the glissando -- of the strength of the word that sometimes abruptly becomes a rock, a solid surface, not in the least fluvial, as is the narrative of a tale, novel or poetic epic. With both of them, there is no more trace of ancient prosodies, no more trace of the incomprehensible Sainte-Beuve who could claim: 'I have to collect a volume of prose'. The word, the voice, the volume take shape with each other, unveiling a theatre that theatre usually ignores, which has given it such things as a Samuel Beckett's Fin de Partie.' Over the years Etant Donnes have collaborated with people like Lydia Lunch, Michael Gira, Alan Vega and Genesis P-Orridge. L'Opposition Et Les Cases Conjuguées Sont Réconciliées was the band's second album, originally released in 1981 on French label Bain Total, run by die Form, on cassette only. For this CD re-issue we have added a long bonus track not on the original album."

REDRAGO Redrago/Il Veliero (Club Versions) 12"
Life And Death label boss DJ Tennis works with Israeli duo Red Axes as they express themselves with total freedom and explore the similarities and differences between their respective sounds. DJ Tennis and the Red Axes duo were first introduced to each other by The Pachanga Boys at a festival in Corsica. "Their faces, their expressions and their attitude -- gentle, smart, loving and funny -- impressed me at first sight," remembers Tennis. They have deepened their personal and musical connections since. Around a year ago, they were having a discussion and decided they should attempt to combine their "love of psy and Mediterranean influences" and scheduled a week of recording sessions together. After making at 9am and having a proper Israeli breakfast, the artists went to a studio on top of a decadent old shopping mall in the Centre of Tel Aviv. Each of them then set up in one corner of the studio with their own instrument (including Tennis's Pearl Syncussion, a small modular setup, a Juno and bunch of guitar pedals, while Niv and Dori "used their usual weird cheap instruments including bass and guitars" and they began playing, experimenting and jamming, recording everything they did then swapping stations and repeating the process. They then took all the recordings into various editing sessions and finalized the adventurous, multi-genre exploration that is Redrago. "The aim was to find a kind of Italian-Israeli connection in our musical approach," explain Red Axes. "The album journeys from psychedelic Italo disco to Israeli trance rock with a lot of rave elements. We call it falafel disco mixed with a 1/4 of spaghetti sauce." This 12" provides club versions of two tracks from the album (LAD 045LP): "Redrago", a Balearic track with expansive pads and sun-kissed melodies and "Il Veliero", a complexly woven tapestry of intoxicating leads and drunken tabla drum sounds with a psyched-out vibe.

LUCIER, ALVIN I Am Sitting In A Room CD
Restocked; originally released by Lovely Music in 1981. In this fascinating exploration of acoustical phenomena, Alvin Lucier slips from the domain of language to that of music in the course of 40 minutes and 32 repetitions of a simple paragraph of text. In I Am Sitting In A Room, several sentences of recorded speech are simultaneously played back into a room and re-recorded there many times. As the repetitive process continues, those sounds common to the original spoken statement and those implied by the structural dimensions of the room are reinforced. The others are gradually eliminated. The space acts as a filter; the speech is transformed into pure sound. All the recorded segments are spliced together in the order in which they were made and constitute the work. I Am Sitting In A Room was composed in 1970 and was first performed at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City that same year. A second version was made in 1972 to accompany the dance, Dune, performed by the Viola Farber Dance Company at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Since that time, numerous versions of this composition have been realized in various ways by other musicians, including a Swedish radio broadcast version. This recording was made by Alvin Lucier on October 29th and 31st, 1980, in the living room of his home in Middletown, CT. The material was recorded on a Nagra tape recorder with an Electro-Voice 635 dynamic microphone and played back on one channel of a Revox A77 tape recorder, Dynaco amplifier, and a KLH Model Six loudspeaker. It consists of thirty-two generations of Alvin Lucier's speech and was made expressly for Lovely Music, Ltd.

MCGUINN'S THUNDERBYRD, ROGER Live At Rockpalast 1977 CD+DVD
"The legendary first Rockpalast night from 1977 made rock history. Final guest on stage: Roger McGuinn's Thunderbyrds. Before Roger McGuinn entered the stage with his Thunderbyrds as the top act of the night, Rory Gallagher and Little Feat had already rocked the Grugahalle. The Thunderbyrds had their first and only album (simply titled Thunderbyrd) released. The line-up of the band next to McGuinn was excellent: Rick Vito (lead-guitar, back- and lead vocals) came from John Mayall and was exactly one decade later a member of Fleetwood Mac for four years, Charlie Harrison (bass and background-vocals) was previously a member of the progressive rockers of Judas Jump and Tundra and later joined the West Coast legend Poco and Greg Thomas was playing drums for Loudon Wainwright III, Seals & Crofts and Leon Russell prior to the Thunderbyrds. A well-coordinated band, stimulating their boss Roger McGuinn ('Pick it up McGuinn!!!!') to some top performances. That was really a very magical moment in the history of the Rockpalast series which has lost nothing of its power, intensity and passion even after 42 years."

GOLEM Orion Awakes LP
Repressed. Mental Experience present a reissue of Golem's Orion Awakes. Orion Awakes was recorded and produced circa 1976 by Toby Robinson, aka Genius P. Orridge, while he worked as second engineer at the famous Dierks Studio in Cologne. Memories from those hazy times are sketchy, but all evidence leads you to believe that the musicians featured here were well-known names from the kraut scene working under pseudonyms, recording 100% underground, non-commercial music under Toby's guidance, just for fun. Apparently, Orion Awakes was released as a very limited hand-made pressing housed in a silver foil sleeve on the Pyramid label, which was run by Toby and his friend Robin Page, the Fluxus artist. No original copies have ever been found. The fascinating liner notes by kraut expert Alan Freeman talk about seeing an original copy of Golem at a record shop in Germany many years ago and he also sheds some light on who could be the real musicians involved, as well as discussing the controversial story of the Pyramid label and the accusations of Golem being a manufactured '90s "fake" instead of a real vintage '70s recording. A glorious blend of space-rock, kraut, and psychedelia, courtesy of the mysterious Golem -- Plenty of Hammond organ, analog synths, ripping guitar, effects, trippy jams. RIYL: Gila, Mythos, Guru Guru, Cosmic Jokers, Novalis, Neu!, Hawkwind, Brainticket, My Solid Ground, Pink Floyd. "Legitimately tripped out, fans of the Cosmic Jokers could certainly get behind this one." --Angela Sawyer (Weirdo Records) Includes download coupon; 24-bit domain remaster from the original tapes; Housed in a silver foil sleeve; Insert with liner notes by Alan Freeman (Ultima Thule/The Crack In The Cosmic Egg (1996)).

MALARIA! Compiled 2.0 2LP
January 1981 found Gudrun Gut and Bettina Koster in Christopher Franke's Berlin-Spandau Studio recording their first Malaria! EP (Zensor Records). Christine Hahn of The Static with Glenn Branca and Barbara Ess, joined in from New York, and Manon P. Duursma fresh from Nina Hagen's O.U.T. project, and Susanne Kuhnke completed the line-up. Malaria! started touring intensively soon after the release of their 12", commencing with a concert with New Order at Brussel's Ancienne Belgique, and going on from there to concerts with Siouxsie and the Banshees, Birthday Party, The Slits, The AuPairs, Raincoats, Nina Hagen, John Cale, and Einstürzende Neubauten. They played venues as diverse as the Mudd Club, Peppermint Lounge and Studio 54 in New York, the Documenta in Kassel, the Bat Cave in London, Les Bains Douche in Paris, Milky Way and Paradiso in Amsterdam, ICA in London, the Piazza Santa Maria Novella in Florence, and Markthalle in Hamburg and naturally, again and again, at the SO36 in Berlin. While touring, Malaria! used their time off to record in Studios in New York, London, Brussels, New Orleans, and in Berlin -- How Do You Like My New Dog? 7" (1981), Weisses Wasser 12" (1982), New York Passage 12" (1982), Revisited cassette (1983), and the Emotion album (1982). At the BBC studios in London, Maida Vale, Malaria! recorded a John Peel Session. Malaria! took a break in 1984 -- Bettina and Christine re-located to New York, and Gudrun and Manon stayed in Berlin to form Matador with Beate Bartel, but not before they recorded their mini-album, Beat The Distance (1985). In 1992 Gudrun, Bettina, Christine, and Manon met up in New Orleans with Jim Thirlwell (Foetus) to record Elation 12". Elation was followed by Cheerio (1993), which again was recorded in Berlin. Chicks on Speed did their own version of Malaria!'s song, "Kaltes Klares Wasser" in 2001, and the remix went into the German Top 10. Malaria! has been an instrumental part of Berlin music history, as recently presented at the "Zurück zum Beton" at Düsseldorf's Kunstakademie, Kunsthalle Wien "Punk!", "Geniale Dilletanten" Goethe Institut, and in B-Movie.

LAIKA SPEAKS Red Rocket Right Return LP
"Modern composers, from Holst to Suzanne Cianni to Sun Ra, differ in how space is represented sonically. There are as many interpretations as there are composers willing to engage the search. A common thread weaves between them: space created instead of space filled. The sounds of space are limitless in a vacuum. But how can they be experienced if not from a safe haven? Laika Speaks, so named for the famed Russian dog, approaches this question with a minimalist approach to modular synthesis and a healthy dose of electronic delay. Their debut album, Red Rocket Right Return, is an interpretation of the sounds of the cosmos as imagined through the perspective of the titular Sputnik canine; a record that questions just what Laika might have heard during her journey around the Earth. Additional inspiration comes from a truly eccentric grab bag of sounds, including Space Race-era satellite transmissions, morse code, and HAM radio. The listening experience of Red Rocket Right Return is evocative of drifting, the isolation of space travel, the lonely emptiness of the unknown, and the vastness of the universe. An album for the Voyager Spacecraft in your life."

COIL Theme From The Gay Man's Guide To Safer Sex (Green Vinyl) LP
Green vinyl; comes in green sleeve. Musique Pour La Danse present Coil's unreleased soundtrack for the VHS only, pre-internet, sexual education documentary entitled The Gay Man's Guide To Safer Sex released in 1992. Members for this project were John Balance, Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson, and Danny Hyde. The OST, to quote John Balance's interview for Compulsion Online, "is [a] slightly new age-y, progressive house type thing". Another way to approach it is as a delightful collection of Balearic beats, smoking jazz not far removed from Badalamenti's work with David Lynch, somewhat of an ambient house album for your home listening and early morning sunrise dances, Coil style. Taken from the original masters provided by Danny Hyde, The Gay Man's Guide To Safer Sex features a new sexy edit of the main theme. Bonus tracks "Nasa-Arab" and "Omlagus Garfungiloops" are taken from the 1992 CD-only release Stolen And Contaminated Songs, both being original versions of the radically reworked (for the OST) "Nasa-Arab 2" and "Exploding Frogs" in order to balance the whole album and extend the listening pleasure.

On the flip comes "Groove Tutorial" -- as fair a name as any when the programming is this good. The beat shuffles and chugs along, always staying fresh and interesting, while a minimal layer of other instrumentation adds depth. Firmeza's lilting vocal cadence matches the rhythm's cantering syncopation on "Intenso", and "AVAN" sees him scudding melodically over cold, direct drums. On the mesmerizing "RRRRRR" vocals are trapped in psychotic, nanoscopic loops and woven with infectiously offset, technoid bass patterns, before "25" supplies a masterclass in loose-limbed percussion.

POSO, GABRIELE Batik LP
Future Afro-Latin jazz house from master percussionist, multi-instrumentalist and composer Gabriele Poso. A true multi-instrumentalist, Gabriele Poso found a particular affinity for percussion at a young age, studying in Puerto Rico and Cuba. His latest album Batik, to be released on Soundway, is once again entirely self-produced and features guest vocalists Nailah Porter, Nina Rodriguez, Quetzal Guerrero, and Sofia Rollo. Following a long-term collaborative partnership with Osunlade/Yoruba Records, as well as albums on BBE and Agogo Records, Gabriele Poso has garnered acclaim from reviewers and selectors, including Gilles Peterson. On Batik, Poso further develops and matures his sound -- exploring his extensive roots in Afro-Cuban percussion, while delving into the realms of jazz and soulful house. Much of the album features Poso on not only vocals but many of the instruments -- including percussion, guitar, and kalimba. With mixing by renowned Spanish DJ and producer Kiko Navarro, the lead single "Africa Linda" is an up-tempo live take on Latin house, featuring American-born soul singer Quetzal Guerrero on vocals. SCHAFER, THEODORE CALE Patience LP
Patience is the debut full-length album by Sante Fe-based artist Theodore Cale Schafer. Alternately murky and narcoleptic and bristling with grit and light, this collection of eight pieces is a delicate play of contrasts. Impressionistic settings unfurl with an unhurried gait, opening with the dream-like disorientation of "Gold Chain" in which a degraded location recording gives way to a soft web of treated piano motifs. Schafer's compositions are sumptuous yet unfussy, recalling perhaps the concise, vignette-oriented tape works of Andrew Chalk, which seem to prioritize spontaneity and ephemerality over preciousness and decorum. This approach yields substantive results, as on "It's Late", which marries a dolorous, clanging guitar sketch to the sound of change jostling in the pocket of a walker and the laughter of friends or passersby. This is diaristic music -- rough-hewn, confessional, and teeming with possibility. Theodore Cale Schafer has released on Amethyst Sunset and Summer Isle. Artwork by Andrea Bjurström. Mastered by Kassian Troyer at Dubplates & Mastering. Includes download code; First edition of 300.

APRYL FOOL Apryl Fool LP
Survival Research present a reissue of Apryl Fool's self-titled album, originally released in 1969. The story of Japanese psychedelic band Apryl Fool and their eponymous debut album is simply extraordinary. It was the vehicle by which bassist Haroumi Hosono first came to prominence, years before he became known as the "Godfather of Japanese electronica" as the founding member and leader of Yellow Magic Orchestra, though this musical titan had work released prior to the group's 1968 founding, such as the song "The Sea Of Summer Day", recorded with Yuko Okuyama and released by King Records the year before. Drummer Takashi "Rei" Matsumoto was a Beatles maniac that had covered songs in his earlier group, Burns, while pioneering prog-rock keyboardist Hiroyoshi Yanagida and guitarists Chu Kosaka and Eiji Kikuchi had all been part of a group called The Floral, formed in 1967 through the Japanese wing of the official fan club of The Monkees (whom they supported during a Japanese tour enacted in October 1968). In September 1969, Apryl Fool played behind musical theater group, Tokyo Kid Brothers, the recording issued in minute quantity as the Love & Banana EP, issued on Columbia Japan's Musicolor subsidiary; Apryl Fool's own LP, also issued on Musicolor that year, had extended spacey psychedelic freak jams in the form of "Tanger" and "Pledging My Time", marathon blues-rock tracks such as "April Blues" and "Honky Tonk Jam", with the employed English-sounding, fairly credible though, parts of the epic opus "The Last Mother Land", featuring Japanese lyrics. Of course, the day that the LP was actually released is reportedly the day that Apryl Fool announced their termination, giving this scarce release another level of legend for connoisseurs.

H-FUSION Captured Entities 2LP
Captured Entities is the debut album of deeply raw house and psycho-jit-jazz by Detroit producer and DJ, Howard Thomas aka H-Fusion. Spanning the breadth of Howard's hands-on, tracky style -- from beatless cosmic jazz audities to slamming 170bpm missiles and heart-grabbing house -- it's arguably one of the most distinctive, dare-to-be-different albums from the 313 in recent memory. The fruit of more than five years of communication between Howard and The Death of Rave, Captured Entities expands on the ruff-neck, asymmetric slant of his killer 2005-2012 productions for Sound Signature and Fit -- as played by everyone from Kyle Hall to Kassem Mosse -- across 11 unruly numbers united by an intuitive, jazz-wise approach to his synths and MPC2000. While his sound may remind of many Detroit greats such as Omar-S, Damon Peterson/8088, and Urban Tribe/DJ Stingray, Howard can't help but sound like himself, and his debut album is best defined by its classically driven yet singular Detroit soul clinamen. Where too many producers' lip-service to jazz is betrayed by their gridlocked uniformity, Howard cuts the f*ck loose in real-time, improvised jams which have made it to the final track list because of their unquantized cantankerousness and frictional quality. Sawn-off blasts of hardcore warehouse rave give way to sultry, dream-away house jackers and a ruck of diesel-fueled bangers that sound like Nate Young doing Jit with DJ Stingray at a Detroit biker bar. When combined with the curdled gob of beatless, cosmic noise and the cranky swaggering cyberpunk on the album's closing side, Captured Entities really comes into its own as a unique expression of Michigan grit which, by design or chance, effectively splits the difference between Black Noise and Wolf Eyes. This kind of instinctively jazz-taught, stylistic and metric versatility is rare in Detroit-manufactured techno albums beyond, say, the debut Omar-S album Just Ask The Lonely (2005), or the eponymous Urban Tribe LP for KDJ's Mahogani Music (2010), and the track sequencing of Captured Tracks aims to highlight the album's strength in its diversity. Illuminated by an exceptional mastering job from Anne at Berlin's Dubplates & Mastering (and cut at 45rpm) which reveals all its dusty details and rewards cranked volume in spades, Captured Entities is a uniquely rude, thrilling and soulfully compelling album from any angle, and a long overdue LP testament to one of Detroit's most peculiar, instinctive, and unsung artists. Mixed by DJ Head.

FENNESZ Agora LP
Repressed! Agora is Christian Fennesz's first solo album since Mahler Remix (TONE 052LP, 2014) and Bécs (EMEGO 165CD/LP, 2014). Fennesz writes: "It's a simple story. I had temporarily lost a proper studio workspace and had to move all my gear back to a small bedroom in my flat where I recorded this album. It was all done on headphones, which was rather a frustrating situation at first but later on it felt like back in the day when I produced my first records in the 1990s. In the end it was inspiring. I used very minimal equipment; I didn't even have the courage to plug in all the gear and instruments which were at my disposal. I just used what was at hand." Fennesz uses guitar and computer to create shimmering, swirling electronic sound of enormous range and complex musicality. His lush and luminous compositions are anything but sterile computer experiments. They resemble sensitive, telescopic recordings of rainforest insect life or natural atmospheric occurrences, an inherent naturalism permeating each piece. He lives and works in Vienna. Recorded at Kaiserstudios, Vienna, August, September 2018. "Rainfall": vocals by Katharina Caecilia Fennesz; "Agora": field recordings Manfred Neuwirth, vocals Mira Waldmann. Photography and design by Jon Wozencroft. Mastered by Denis Blackham at Skye. Full color inner and outer sleeve. BROTZMANN/SCHLIPPENBACH/BENNINK Fifty Years After... Live at the Lila Eule 2018 CD
For the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the legendary Machine Gun recordings at the Lila Eule in Bremen, Peter Brötzmann put together a trio with the Berlin pianist, composer Alexander von Schlippenbach and the percussionist Han Bennink, who already sat on the drums 50 years ago. They were so pleased with the music that they decided to release it and continue to play gigs as the trio. Machine Gun was originally recorded in May 1968 by an octet consisting of influential musicians of new jazz and improvised music. The LP was repressed on Cien Fuegos in 2018 (CF 020LP). Personnel: Peter Brötzmann - tenor saxophone, b-flat clarinet, tarogato; Alexander von Schlippenbach - piano; Han Bennink - drums.

WINK, JOSH Higher State Of Consciousness (Adana Twins Remixes) 12"
Josh Wink's "Higher State Of Consciousness" gets a respectful touch-up after 25 years, courtesy of the Adana Twins. The German duo come strong with a pair of remixes, fit for two very different dancefloor scenarios. "Remix One" is a smart, stripped-back breakbeat version that switches from a sparse percussive soundscape to the famous acid warbles, before introducing undulating retro trance synths to the composition for a head-melting finish. "Remix Two" is a driving, four-to-the-floor, rave-focused affair that builds up the 303s with exhilarating intensity, only letting up in the final moments of the track. The first 500 copies come in special glow-in-the-dark vinyl. The fresh interpretation follows on from Adana Twins' super re-work of Patrice Baumel's "Roar" that dropped on Watergate November 2018 (WG 052EP) and reinforces the duo's golden touch on the remix front.

OVER, KEVIN we_r house 06 12"
Cinthie's we_r_house imprint returns a four-track package from Germany's Kevin Over. "Try Minus 10" leads with dusty drum breaks, soft Rhodes chords, and soulful vocals before "Lunte" lays down a disco-infused feel via funky bass lines, chanting vocal loops, horn stabs, and filtered guitar licks. "20 Dollar House", featuring Marlon takes things back to a more classic house aesthetic via gritty stab sequences, swinging 909 drums, soaring vocals, and jazzy piano melodies before "Fake 89" rounds out the release on a deeper tip, fusing ethereal chords and crunchy percussion with squelchy 303 lines and earth shattering low-end tones.
