FLOORPLAN Fiyaaaa!/His Eye Is On The Sparrow (feat. Carol Otis) 12"
Not content with defining the sound of minimal techno in the nineties, Robert Hood has more recently fine0tuned his own gospel-tinged take on the genre. It comes under the Floorplan moniker, the genesis of which is said to have come to him when awakened by a late-night vision. Since 2016, it has been a collaborative duo between Hood and daughter Lyric, and never fails to lead to religious experiences on the dancefloor. With roots in the Detroit techno scene in which Hood first emerged, Floorplan's sound is embellished with the heartfelt emotions and unbridled passions of Chicago house music. It is heavy and analog and filled with vigor thanks to the expert drum programming and ever rising sense of euphoria that comes from the well sculpted synths. But it also speaks to the heart and soul and has done since first standout cut "We Magnify His Name". The pair's endless quest for the perfect groove continued through albums like 2013's Paradise (MPM 016CD/LP) -- which spawned anthemic singles like "Let's Ride", "Baby Baby", and the massive "Never Grow Old" -- and 2016's Victorious (MPM 028CD/LP). The same year saw Hood's daughter Lyric officially become part of the project. Since then they have taken Floorplan to endless headline shows at high profile clubs and festivals everywhere from New York City to Ibiza, London to Amsterdam. Their electric sets leave crowds feeling uplifted, spiritually awakening and totally in awe. Part of the success of Floorplan is the combination of Robert's old school excellence and Lyric's new school innovation: their music, with its big chords and even bigger vocal samples, could be 30 years old or fresh from the pressing plant, such is its universal sense of appeal. It is rare to make music as stripped back yet emotionally enriched as Floorplan, but this pair do it with ease and a firm focus on durable grooves. Functional but full of form, tense but atmospheric, loopy but ever evolving, Floorplan truly transcend the dance music spectrum. Features Carol Otis.

DALACHINSKY & THE SNOBS, STEVE Massive Liquidity CD
2011 release. Collaboration between New York beat poet Steve Dalachinsky and French art-rockers The Snobs. Steve Dalachinsky plays with words like models William Burroughs or Allen Ginsberg did few decades ago: using cut-up and automatic writing, he creates new meanings. Not only a writer, Dalachinsky performs regularly with free-jazz musicians and friends to give his text a new life. You can see the poet at work, how he breaks the rules of the language to create his own and how he embodies his words to converse with the sound of a saxophone or a double bass. Massive Liquidity is the result of a Bam Balam Records wish to hear the deep and mysterious Dalachinsky's voice mixed with a more rock and electric oriented music. The Snobs are a French duet formed by brothers Mad Rabbit and Duck Feeling in 2003. They produce records on their own and release them on their website for free. Dalachinsky and The Snobs met in winter 2011 in Paris to record some vocals for the project. With the first coming back to New York few days later, the French duet had the freedom to process with sounds just like Dalachinsky did with words: they used edits, collages and experiment to create the most cohesive work. Duck Feeling plays all the instruments on the record: guitar, bass, sitar, electronic organ, psychedelic effects, percussion instruments made with petrol cans or metal sheets. Massive Liquidity presents two twenty minutes musical suites made of various influences: 1969's Miles Davis instrumental freedom hit, Einstürzende Neubauten's industrial and elegant sense of rhythm. Psychedelic effects are both essential and measured to let a strict groove between James Brown and Arnold Schoenberg happen. Dalachinsky's voice is the narrative element: it can be a gentle whisper at a moment and turn into a wild and menacing raucous noise just few seconds later. Words and music interact, they sometimes hurt each other or simply become one only powerful and moving sound. The records closing belongs to the voice, which seems to clarify the violent and cosmic experience the listener just had: "It's his head now. Pull the trigger."

ENBATTA'S TRIBE, MARK Mark Enbatta's Tribe CD
Bam Balam Records present Tribe from the great singer songwriter Mark Enbatta. Mark Enbatta is best known as the lead singer and guitarist of the psychedelic-garage band The Vietnam Veterans. Starting in 1982, an official split with The Vietnam Veterans was declared in 1987, but the members of the band never stopped working together under various names like the Curanderos, the Late Veterans, the Veterans, the Vietnam Chain, the Smiling Droopies, the Gitanes, or even on solo projects. Their audience never stopped calling them the Vietnam Veterans... There was nothing you could do about it! When Lucas Trouble died in 2016, Mark officially declared they wouldn't use the original band's name anymore. Lucas wasn't an original member but he was Mark's friend and partner in crime since the early days. The further psychedelic adventures of the Vietnam Veterans will now happen as the Tribe. Same singer/songwriter, two former members of the VV's and a new bassist. The Tribe's first album is maybe darker than what people could expect but Mark wrote it during Lucas Trouble's agony. Five years after A Fistful of Love (2014), here is another trip inside haunted human minds. Some bad trips give special emotions... Songs about love, friendship, death, secrets, fakes, time, treasons, life, Polly Ticks and (what a surprise!) sex...

HUDSON, KEITH Flesh Of My Skin Blood Of My Blood LP
2019 repress; LP version. Originally released in 1974 on Mamba, Flesh Of My Skin Blood Of My Blood is the most hallowed of all those reggae albums which remain unavailable, and Keith Hudson's key achievement in a career launched when, as a fourteen-year-old, he recorded members of The Skatalites on his "Shades Of Hudson" rhythm. After a series of solid-gold productions for Ken Boothe, Delroy Wilson, John Holt, U-Roy and the rest, this album projects Hudson's removal from Jamaica to London and New York studios and transatlantic audiences, and inaugurates a sequence of albums -- classics like Pick A Dub, Brand, Playing It Cool, Playing It Right -- which show his troubled experimentalism better suited to the LP than the cardinal 7" reggae format. Anchored here by Santa Davis and George Fullwood from the Soul Syndicate -- alongside musicians like Augustus Pablo, Count Ossie and Leroy Sibbles -- Hudson's mood is tormented and dazed, as on titles like "Darkest Night," "My Nocturne" and "Testing My Faith," where he struggles for Black senses of commitment --political, existential, religious -- at its breaking point. Magnificently and deadly serious, hauntingly unique, unmissable and unforgettable.

DOHENY, NED Hard Candy LP
2019 repress. Ned Doheny's Hard Candy, originally released in 1976, is widely considered the finest blue-eyed soul album of all time. It has long been a source of great frustration then, that this perfectly-formed Southern California masterpiece has been unavailable on vinyl for almost 40 years. Be With Records continues apace by marking its third release with the first officially licensed reissue of Doheny's nautical classic. Perhaps most famously, this impeccably smooth set features the timeless "Get It Up For Love", a wonderful example of mid-70s mid-tempo white-(hot)-funk. Produced by the legendary Steve Cropper, it featured a veritable who's-who of the Laurel Canyon soft-yacht sound (JD Souther, The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, the entire horn section for Tower of Power) yet bombed mysteriously. It's been a cult record since. Features the original artwork for both jacket and full color inner sleeve; 180 gram vinyl.

GUERRERO, TOMMY A Little Bit Of Somethin' 2LP
2019 repress; remastered on 180 gram vinyl, expanded to double-LP, gatefold sleeve. One cannot hear a Tommy Guerrero song without immediately recognizing it as his -- and his only. The cult skater from San Francisco is globally renowned as one of the original members of the legendary "Bones Brigade" team. And as an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, his laid-back soul is beloved by all who've basked in its blissful glow. A Little Bit Of Somethin' is a quietly majestic gem. Brimming with Guerrero's horizontal "loose grooves", these brief but innovative instrumentals demonstrate a rich variety and, as such, comprise an LP that is aptly titled. An enchanting start-to-finish listen, it was instantly regarded as essential upon release via Mo Wax in 2000. It has aged remarkably well. Throughout this inspired collection, simplicity is key. In deploying it, Guerrero presents a beautifully crafted melodic soundscape. The distinctive, mellifluous approach of his guitar style, blending Brazilian, Cuban, Mexican, soul, and jazz motifs, is at once startlingly new and tantalizingly familiar. Set against unrushed percussion, the music releases a crystal-clear stream of healing frequencies to create a fragile, hypnotic atmosphere. Each track clocks in at around three minutes and, with a lack of studio polish or commitment to traditional song structure, it's a wonder how this enigmatic record demands your attention. However, through its gentle dynamism and impressive playing, it does just that. Whilst resolutely low-key, this lo-fi aesthetic feels genuinely organic and remarkably personal; its powerful intimacy truly connects. It's what makes this album so beloved of those lucky enough to be already familiar with it. From Margaret Kilgallen's truly iconic cover artwork to the music contained within, it's all brilliantly effortless. Guerrero's musical ideas are consistently compelling throughout, making it impossible to select highlights. The album's laconic drift touches upon jazz-fusion workouts and slow-mo hip-hop drums, Tortoise-style experimental post-rock, and cinematic sound textures. It's at once hazy, light and bouncy yet somber and bluesy. The Latin soul of El Chicano blends with the breezy jazz of Grant Green. By employing guitars and drum machines to create a stripped-down rhythmic tapestry of spellbinding, addictive songs, there are even traces of The Durutti Column. A little bit of country, a little bit of rock n' roll. A Little Bit Of Somethin', indeed.

FRAZIER, CEASAR 75 LP
Be With Records present a reissue of Ceasar Frazier's 75, originally released in 1975. Funky soul-jazz organist Caesar Frazier crafted superior Hammond funk. 75, his second LP, is a rare gem. It's comfortably his greatest artistic statement. The follow-up to Hail Ceasar! (1972), it's a taut, grooving set that expands his sound and, put simply, it's got better songs. The key elements of his debut album are all there -- production from maestro Bob Porter, accompaniment from hip players (Bernard "Pretty" Purdie, Cornell Dupree, John Tropea) and arrangement from Horace Ott -- but the overall sound is elevated. The tightly jamming, expressive jazz-funk makes for a richer, fuller, more satisfying experience. 75 is a mixture of hard-driving originals, deeply beautiful slower numbers to vary the tempo and a couple of classy covers. The crazy bombastic "Mighty Mouse" -- a riot of horns, organ and in the pocket drums -- became an acid jazz classic at Dingwalls and it's easy to see (hear?) how. A blissed-out, lushly instrumental take on Seals and Crofts' "Summer Breeze" follows, perfect for those sunshine sets. Side A closes with the heavenly "Sweet Children". A loping, funky jazz masterpiece famously sampled by Kanye West for Common's "Real People" from Be (2005). It opens beautifully, with soaring sax and a funky horn section combining with weightless keyboard tones atop snapping drums. Unsurprisingly, the excellence endures right through to the end. The B side opens with perhaps the album's most famous track. "Funk It Down" contains the familiar "I can feel the funk" vocal refrain throughout. But it's the gorgeous, insouciant bridge that you should all know and love, having been used as the hook for Gang Starr's "Ex-Girl To Next Girl". A great cover of Stevie Wonder's "Living for the City" comes next, with an unforgettable bass-line which anchors the entire heavy rhythm section workout. Dizzying organ, triumphant horns and sun-dappled guitar grooves combine to create "Walking On The Side", rounding out a pretty smoking set. This is one of those rare '70s funk-soul-jazz LPs on which a bad track cannot be found. It's all essential. So of course finding original copies on vinyl at affordable prices has been tough for years. Reproduced artwork by the Be With Records. Mastered by Simon Francis; cut by Pete Norman.

OPTIMISTICS Optimistics LP
Be With Records present a reissue of Optimistics' self-titled album, originally released in 1970. This is some serious top-shelf material out of Baltimore and a certified masterclass in sweet symphonic soul. Optimistics was originally released in 1970 on Turbo and it's every bit as essential as The Chi-Lites, The Delfonics, and The Moments yet nowhere near as known. Those original copies are ridiculously rare and, of course, the prices are equally ridiculous. Optimistics is a killer LP throughout, beloved of discerning hip-hop producers worldwide and routinely championed by the legendary Pete Rock. The genius George Kerr has handled the production on what is an album of beautiful, naïve soul for mind and body. It radiates a heart-breaking ambience that cuts right to the core. The band of Billy, Harold, James, Charles, and Jerome are described on the back cover as "five young, black knights who have embarked on a musical crusade and they're gonna slay a lot of dragons along the way". It's not entirely known how many mythical serpents were dispatched during the making of this album but we can certainly attest to the sense of evangelical drive. Evergreen opener "You Put Something New In My Life" is a heart-stopping ode to a transformative love. A ballad with spine-tingling chord changes and melodic switch-ups to spare, its sweeping strings and precise drums complement the falsetto delivery perfectly. It's followed by the equally beguiling "Let's Love". Another string-drenched harmony ballad, it revolves around delicate piano and distinctive guitar lines, crying out to be recontextualized by the best sampling technicians. Closing out the A side, the wonderfully restrained "Love Is God Almighty" is harp and horn-driven, barely-there soul from a higher plain. Ushering in the flipside, "Should I Let Myself Go", sampled recently by Knxwledge, is sensational guitar-soul with a yearning that could bring the most hardened soul to tears. It's followed by the up-tempo, Temptations-funk of "Man" and quietly-great "If I Could Influence Man", where the competing vocals ride a chugging, funky breakbeat and delicious guitar licks. The refreshing, groovy "Say It Baby" is an appropriately positive, upward looking closer. Its sentiment and feel speaks directly to both the band name and the title of this, their only album. The whole LP is a winning blend of slow, spine-tingling ballads, and joyously upbeat tracks. Artwork reproduced by Be With Records. Mastered by Simon Francis; cut by Pete Norman.

MCPHEE/GRAHAM LAMBKIN/CHARLIE MCPHEE/OLIVER LAMBKIN, JOE Live in the Batcave LP
Black Truffle invite you to an evening of drunken revelry in the Batcave! After a chance meeting at a local supermarket in Poughkeepsie, New York, Joe McPhee and Graham Lambkin have performed together as a duo extensively in recent years, in addition to their joint work excavating some of the wildest tapes from McPhee's archive for Lambkin's now defunct Kye label. Live in the Batcave documents an evening the two friends spent together in the company of Joe's brother Charlie and Lambkin's son Oliver in November 2017 at Charlie's house in Poughkeepsie. The LP captures seven increasingly drunken snapshots of the four shooting the breeze, playing flutes and whistles, drumming on anything at hand, and playing records. Edited together in Lambkin's distinctive style of lo-fi domestic tape collage, the multiple simultaneous cassette recordings of the shenanigans abruptly cut in and out and fall out of sync, creating disorientating, woozy echoes. Mics are bumped, stories are told, drinks are poured, text messages arrive, and AACM-esque flute jams are interrupted by violent bursts of laughter and wet-mouthed sound poetry. All the while, classic soul records play, initially in the background, but coming increasingly to the fore until the record culminates in a strangely moving free-associative singalong. Live in the Batcave is a truly unique document that exists somewhere between free jazz, audio verité, performance art, and everyday life. File next to your copy of Das Kümmerling Trio. Gatefold sleeve with extensive photographic documentation and liner notes from Joe McPhee. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin."Our music was born from the sounds of jazz, funk, soul, noise -- sounds with no other reason so exist, except because they did, sounds which occurred like putting one step in front of the other to see if the way was clear to take the next step. The plan was, there is no plan, just start at the beginning, end at the end and party like it's 1999" --Joe McPhee.

TUSQUES, FRANCOIS Alors Nosferatu Combina Un Plan Ingenieux LP
François Tusques on Alors Nosferatu Combina Un Plan Ingenieux: "After Le Nouveau Jazz was released in early 1967 (CACK 014LP), I worked for two years with Bernard Vitet, Beb Guérin and a few other friends on a happening loosely based on Lewis Carroll's The Hunting Of The Snark. There was a strong element of theater to it and we presented it in playhouses, museums, public places, institutions... It never made it to wax and I gave up on the idea soon after when Sunny Murray and Alan Silva showed up in Paris in late 1968. I had meant to upend the conventions of performance with this happening: now I was fully part of a similar revolution, the 'New Music', with its very originators. Nevertheless, the 'Snark' adventure was never over, and the bands I co-directed still used the musical themes (and methods) we had developed for the project. The headlines for the performances and the name of the band itself were still lifted from 'fantastique fiction' works: for instance, we performed as the 'Boojum Consort' and used the title of the present LP was used several times at festivals. The music enclosed here is heavily indebted to free jazz but also retains various elements of the former happening (for instance, I also play saw, marimba and organ, and stray away from jazz references). My famous Shandar and 'Dazibao' albums are partially made up of the same material and were recorded at the same period/momentum which lasted roughly from the Spring of 1969 to late 1971 when I started to distance myself from free music. The final macabre incarnation of this work was the show 'Who Killed Albert Ayler?' whose political content stirred controversy. Gérard Terronès considered recording it, he even advertized it, but again nothing materialized. We found these recordings in my basement. The old reels and cassettes were unmarked or the cases (and sadly some of the music) damaged by time, water, and rats! To the best of my recollections, and from posters and advertising of the events, the artists who took part in the 1969-1971 concerts who make up this record are Ronnie Beer, Joseph Déjean, Claude Delcloo, Earl Freeman, Beckie Friend, Eddy Gaumont, Beb Guérin, Noel McGhie, Jouck Minor, Barre Phillips, Aldo Romano, Alan Silva, Kenneth Terroade, Jacques Thollot, and Bernard Vitet. Who, when, where (American Center quite often), exactly, I can't say..."

RESIDENTS, THE Not Available (Preserved Edition) 2CD
"Formed in the early 1970s, The Residents have been charting a unique path through the musical landscape for almost fifty years. From far-out, experimental recordings to highly conceptual, innovative multi-platform projects, the band refuses to stand still, and continues to move in several different directions at once. Among the band's extensive back catalogue, one record sits alone -- composed in accordance with the group's infamous Theory Of Obscurity, Not Available, and the saga that surrounded its release, comprises perhaps the most truly 'Residential' work the group have yet produced, and remains their most intriguing album among fans and critics alike. Now, over forty years after that saga unfolded, and produced using the original masters and multitrack tapes, this package explores and expands the classic album in unprecedented detail -- Disc 2 reveals the original 1974 X Is For Xtra (A Conclusion) recordings which were adapted, edited, remixed and reprocessed into 'Not Available' by Ralph Records in 1978. Familiar and recognisable in places, entirely unheard in others, this revelatory new material sheds paradigm-shifting light on a masterpiece of 20th Century pop culture. Remastered, expanded, and pREServed for future generations -- this is The Residents as we've always wanted to hear them, and the latest in a series of archival reissues that will continue throughout 2020 and beyond."

From far-out, experimental recordings to highly conceptual, innovative multi-platform projects, the band refuses to stand still, and continues to move in several different directions at once. Released on CD for the first time, this set captures the group's earliest work -- two legendary album length demo tapes and three live recordings made under the direction of their mentor, The Mysterious N. Senada, between the Springs of 1971 and 1972. Packed with non-songs, poetry, mutant cover versions, sonic experiments and ambitious suites, 'The W***** B*** Album' and 'B.S.' set the groundwork for all that was to follow in the studio, whilst the three live recordings show the group -- then a large, rambling collective rather than anything resembling a band -- exploring the live-show-as-performance-art space they continue to inhabit to this day. This is must-hear material for both fans of The Residents and those interested in post-hippy, pre-punk DIY avant-garde experimentalism."

MANZO, MICHELE All Rise LP
While jazz and funk are at the core of Michele Manzo's musical foundation, the Italian artist deftly draws upon his inspirations in hip-hop, dub, and Brazilian music as both an instrumentalist and producer. But above genres, inimitable grooves are the key driver of his work, and in his grooves one can hear the vibe of a moment being captured and perpetuated for eternity. With this combination of musical depth and raw feeling, it is no surprise Michele has crossed paths with Darker Than Wax, and the label present his new LP All Rise. All Rise is a genuine reflection of Manzo's art form, which sees so many different styles and influences coming together in the most natural, organic way. Everything was recorded live using bass, synth bass, guitar, old analog keyboards, blended together with modern synths, dub delays and ambient FX -- giving off the familiar warmth of boom bap and progressive stimulation of neo-soul. The pervasive harmonies and clever use of chords give the album a real musical depth, but grounded with an effortless, natural approach to creation. More than just showcasing Michele's musical prowess and mastery of the instrumental, All Rise is also a deeply collaborative effort. The chemistry with heavyweight collaborators like Georgia Anne Muldrow, Dudley Perkins, Nicholas Ryan Gant, and RayClev is incredible -- they complement his instrumental tapestry with poetic ammo, elevating All Rise to a level of virtuous artistry. The five vocal cuts also offer a sober reflection on the turbulent social climate of 2019 America, and the world at large. Police violence, racism, and growing divisions that dominate the current zeitgeist are examined front and center, most prominently by Dudley Perkins on the title track. Yet. despite such a worrying state of affairs, there is an underlying message of positivity triumphing, and a rallying call to destroy evil at its root rather than be consumed by it. All Rise is about people standing up and uniting, being brought together by a common spirit and emotional music. RIYL: Shafiq Husayn, Fatima, Dam-Funk.

B.VISIBLE Pleasant Clutter LP
It's the unexpected that fascinates the mind, letting curiosity grow stronger than the urge for safety and control. The magic of new encounters and unplanned turnarounds helps switch off the autopilot of everyday life and grants an unbiased, curious glimpse of the world. In these brief moments one accepts the chaos surrounding oneself, allowing for an embrace of it and to see the beauty of it. This delightful chaos is the vibrant fabric woven into Pleasant Clutter, the debut album of Vienna-based DJ and producer B.Visible. With an endless love for detail, he masterfully condenses familiar and strange sounds into a fascinating collection of moments, each one in itself as beautiful as volatile. Again and again one will want to hold on to something one has only just grown fond of, yearning to stay just a little longer. Leaving space for the unexpected, the album bit by bit reveals the beauty that lies in the harmony of the whole. Using playful little melodies and decontextualized fragments of sounds, B.Visible conjures up a wide range of moods and emotions: he tells mesmerizing instrumental stories full of unexpected twists and turns, evoking lively images within the mind. In constant flux between weightlessness and dead-aim beats, structures are broken up and put back together on the fly -- always changing, always evolving. Change as a constant and the symbiosis of contrasting elements are omnipresent on Pleasant Clutter, and beyond that. Running through the entire work of B.Visible, these stylistic devices have shaped the musician's creative output over the years, and this distinctive sound has long become his trademark. Colorful illustrations by Viennese artist Daniel Triendl complement the music and add a visual dimension to the album, making the project's intentions visually accessible.

After making his debut in 1960, the immensely talented performer swiftly established a reputation as one of Jamaica's most popular and revered artistes, recording a catalogue of hit singles, most notably for Duke Reid's famed Treasure Isle Records In 1973, a dozen of the singer-songwriter's Treasure Isle tracks were gathered on Mr Soul Of Jamaica -- a best-selling LP, which concurrently saw issue in the UK as 'Greatest Hits'. This seminal album forms the basis of this indispensable 2CD set, which also contains the remainder of Ellis's Duke Reid-produced output from the mid-sixties onwards, with the bonus material including a host of long-lost rarities and previously unissued alternate takes!"

REGIS Necklace Of Bites 2LP
Necklace Of Bites is a vital volley of early Regis artillery sourced from 12"s issued by Downwards c. 1998-2000. Effectively a reshuffle of his 2000AD self-titled CD compilation of 12"-only cuts, it features his Jim Jones-sampling "Solution (Voice)" amid a ruck of prime, dark, and killer late '90s techno girders. Revolving definitively monotone and snaky templates for the Birmingham techno sound forged by Regis (alongside Surgeon, Female, Mick Harris, and Justin Broadrick), Necklace Of Bites is built in the driving, distorted, and highly utilitarian style that spilled out of Brum's Q Club in the mid '90s, and which continues to infect the sets of DJs such as Helena Hauff and Blawan well into 2019. Back before main room techno became meme-ified as "business techno", these tracks were the Black Country shirehorses of peak-time DJ slots across the UK, EU, and the world. Influenced as much by Jeff Mills's Axis and Purpose Maker 12"s and hard-ass Chicago house as original '80s industrial and post-punk, the dozen tracks epitomize Regis's signature distillation of proper, blue collar club sounds, made for those who like to play hard and all night, and as such they're future-proofed for use over 20 years later. In particular, the set highlights Regis's hypnotically sexy and arguably rare use of vocal sampling in the inexorable, militant charges of "Execution Ground", "Baptism", and "Purification (Endless)", while his use of a muffled Jim Jones sample on "Solution (Voices)" predates his use of Jones in BMB by half a decade. More to the point, the compilation also holds precious DJ tool bruisers in the likes of his lip-bitingly infectious roller "Wound Us", and the industrial galvanics of "Adolescence" and "Rites" that still kill in the modern day. Newly remastered and vinyl cut at Dubplates & Mastering. Edition of 500.

The ridiculously talented Christopher Rau goes a little harder than his normal sonic spectrum for his debut release on Drone, delivering two fantastic techno excursions with this strong double hitter. "Riggleysz" exposes Rau's deep house sensibilities with a percussive, DJ tool that breaks out into an infectious techno work out.

NOT WAVING Tremendous/S.M 12"
Not Waving makes his anti-fascist feelings clear with two banging tracks that trust dancefloor irony is not dead and leftist solidarity is alive in 2019. Closing out a banner year with a club-ready boot up the ass, Not Waving's Alessio Natalizia follows his divergent 2019 outings beside Jim O'Rourke, Mark Lanegan, and Jay Glass Dubs with a wildly driven lunge for the strobes. Balancing pure escapism with a reminder to dance and laugh at the populist peckers that dominate the news and global politics, this 12" is exactly the kind of statement that should be heard more often in underground music's naturally left-leaning network of inter-linked, fringe and minority communities. The A-side's Belgian new beat-styled détournement "Tremendous" makes ironic use of a foamy-mouthed but blithe Tr*mp speech about the Paris attacks, sliced and jacked into a strapping mix of jagged EBM arps and Italo/Detroit chromatics with a naggingly playful aesthetic that harks back to Belgian new beat and UK rave's mix of pop-politics and subversive escapism. His B-side "S.M" then opens with a rabble-rousing recording of Italian students chanting "Salvini, merda" against Matteo Salvini -- Italy's immigrant-hating far-right former deputy Prime Minister -- over a bucking, pulsing electro groove that sounds like CoH jamming Ro Maron. Acts of subversive defiance such as this, encouraging dissent and ridicule of pompous right wing blowhards -- and no matter how small in the wider scheme of things -- have never been so vitally required in the modern day. Political dance anthems in a new beat/new beta-style. Orange vinyl; mastered and cut at 45rpm by Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin; edition of 300.

PETER & PETER KYED, PETER Pusher II LP
Never before released score for Nicolas Winding Refn's infamous movie Pusher II: With Blood on My Hands from 2004, composed by legendary Danish punkers Peter Peter (Sods) and Peter Kyed. Refn's three Pusher films endure as the most important Danish gangster films ever made. They revealed a gruesome, desperate national underbelly that had not been depicted on screen before, and they single-handedly anticipated the dark aesthetics of so-called "Nordic Noir" that took over the world in the two decades that followed. The films launched the international career of Mads Mikkelsen, unrecognizable in the early role of skinhead thug Tonny. The films are driven by a jagged, schizophrenic tempo, anxious atmosphere, and explosions of catharsis, a vibe Refn engineered with the close collaboration of Peter Peter and Peter Kyed. The audio and the visuals are inseparable. Since late '70s, Peter Peter casts a long shadow over the Danish punk underground, embracing the aesthetics and possibilities opened up by that period, from post-punk to goth, noise, art rock and free jazz. Peter's invigorating, almost optimistic attitude about the possibilities of sonic violence is a crucial early influence on Refn, and Peter Peters group Bleeder even inspired the title of Refn's movie by that same name. In Pusher II, eerie ambience and violent outburst of heavy synth follow the cascading drums and uncompromising guitar riff of the memorable theme as Tonny (Mads Mikkelsen) adjusts to life on the outside. Driving rock sketches describe a race through chaos, and the clash between instinct and morality. Solid red vinyl.

PETER & PETER KYED, PETER Pusher 3 LP
Never before released score for Nicolas Winding Refn's infamous movie Pusher 3: I'm The Angel of Death from 2005, composed by legendary Danish punkers Peter Peter (Sods) and Peter Kyed. Peter's invigorating, almost optimistic attitude about the possibilities of sonic violence is a crucial early influence on Refn, and Peter Peters group Bleeder even inspired the title of Refn's movie by that same name. In Pusher 3, guitar noise, pulses of static, and ghostly piano figures tail the terrorizing stress of Milo (Zlatko Buri?) through the film. Crystalline synth soundscapes offer temporary, untrustworthy relief, a nauseous kind of peace. The soundtrack is a sonic companion to heroin relapses, birthday party preparations and the carving up of rivals. Solid purple vinyl.

PERELMAN/MATTHEW SHIPP/WILLIAM PARKER/BOBBY KAPP, IVO Ineffable Joy CD
From the liner notes: "Prolific tenor saxophonist Ivo Perelman wanted to be on ESP-Disk', because ESP's 1967 Gato Barbieri album In Search Of The Mystery (ESPDISK 1049CD) was an important record for Perelman, both being South American tenorists of an avant bent. So it is no coincidence that the drummer on In Search Of The Mystery, Bobby Kapp (who's also on Noah Howard's second ESP-Disk', At Judson Hall (1968)), mans the kit for the present album. For that matter, the bassist, William Parker, made his recorded debut on ESP as well, playing on Frank Lowe's Black Beings (1973). And Perelman has a twenty-three-year/thirty-three-and-counting-albums collaboration with pianist Matthew Shipp, who's been associated with ESP since 2015. Kapp and Shipp are on Perelman's 2017 Leo album Tarvos, Parker and Shipp have made multiple albums with Perelman, and this is even the second time out for this quartet, after 2017's Heptagon (Leo). Somehow, though, their interplay remains fresh. Of course, each player has particular gestures and general textures that recur from time to time, but like a kaleidoscope, each turn finds familiar elements recombing into new patterns. Parker, Perelman, and Shipp frequently interweave spontaneous melodies of dazzling complexity. The free-bop of the rhythm section introduction to 'Jubilation' is an unexpected delight. Kapp's skittering accents throughout are a lesson in setting a pulse without being obvious about it, with 'Bliss' being a prime example. 'Exuberance' crowns the album in particularly ecstatic fashion, the four players' unique and distinctive styles coming together in an exultant expression of creative freedom that's communicative and accessible."Personnel: Ivo Perelman - tenor saxophone; Matthew Shipp - piano; William Parker - bass; Bobby Kapp - drums. Recorded April 21, 2018 at Park West Studio. Engineer: Jim Clouse.

PEKLER, ANDREW Sounds From Phantom Islands LP
Faitiche presents a new album by Andrew Pekler: Sounds From Phantom Islands brings together ten tracks created over the last three years for the interactive website Phantom Islands - A Sonic Atlas. With his 2016 album Tristes Tropiques (FAITICHE 014LP, 2016), Pekler created a highly unique cosmos of ethnographic sound speculations. Sounds From Phantom Islands continues and simultaneously expands this concept: finely elaborated chordal motifs float like fog over fictional maritime landscapes. A masterpiece of contemporary exotica. Phantom islands are islands that appeared on historical maps but never actually existed. The status of these artifacts of European colonial expansion from the 15th to the 19th century oscillates between cartographic fact and maritime fiction. Sounds From Phantom Islands interprets and presents these imaginations as a quasi-ethnographic catalog of music and synthetic field recordings. The pieces on this album are based on recordings made for Phantom Islands - A Sonic Atlas, an online interactive map developed with cultural anthropologist Stefanie Kiwi Menrath. VA Strain Crack & Break: Music From The Nurse With Wound List Volume One (France) 2LP
Repressed! After years of mythology, misinterpretation, and procrastination Nurse With Wound's Steven Stapleton finally chooses Finders Keepers as the ideal collaborators to release "the right tracks" from his über-legendary psych/prog/punk peculiarity shopping list known as The Nurse With Wound List, commencing with a French specific Volume One of this authentically titled Strain Crack Break series. Featuring some Finders Keepers' regulars amongst galactic Gallic rarities, this double-vinyl dossier demystifies some of the essential French free jazz and Parisian prog inclusions from the alphabetical "dedication" inventory as printed the anti-bands 1979 industrial milestone debut. When Steven Stapleton, Heman Pathak, and John Fothergill's anti-band Nurse With Wound decided to include an alphabetical dedication to all their favorite bands on the back of their inaugural LP the notion of creating a future record dealers' trophy list couldn't have been further from their minds. By adding a list of untraveled European mythical musicians and noise makers to their own debut release of unchartered industrial art rock they were merely providing a suggestive support system of existing potential like-minded bands. Many of the rare, obscure and unpronounceable genre-free records on The Nurse With Wound List have slowly found their own feet and stumbled in to the homes of open-minded outer-national vinyl junkies, mostly without consultation of the enigmatic NWW map. Via vinyl vacations, on cheap flights and interrail tickets, buying bargain bin LPs on a shoestring while oblivious to the pending pension worthy price tags after their 40-year vintage, Stapleton and Fothergill, even if you've never heard of them, were at the bottom of the pit before "digging" became pay dirt. The List has been mythologized, misunderstood, and misconstrued. It's also been overlooked, overestimated, and under-appreciated in equal measures. Bolstered by the sub-title "Categories strain, crack and sometimes break, under their burden," all bands on the inventory (many chosen on the strength of just one track alone) were chosen for their genre-defying qualities. Forty years after Nurse With Wound's first record, Finders Keepers, in close collaboration with Steve Stapleton remind fans of this kind of "lost" music, that there once existed a feint path which was worn away decades before major label pop property developers built over this psychedelic underground. A collaborative attempt to officially, authentically, and legally compile the best tracks from the list, succeeding where many overzealous nerds have deferred. The first volume of the series focuses exclusively on individual tracks of French origin, the country that unsurprisingly hosted the highest content of bands on the list. Comprising of musique concrète, free jazz, Rock In Opposition, Zeuhl School space rock, macabre ballet music, lo-fi sci-fi, and classic horror literature inspired prog.Features Jacques Thollot, Philippe Besombes, Igor Wakhévitch, Mahjun, Lard Free, Etron Fou Leloublan, Jean Cohen-Solal, Z. N. R., Red Noise, Pierre Henry, Horrific Child, Dashiell Hedayat, and Jean Guérin.

MOCKY Saskamodie LP + 7"
Heavy Sheet present a reissue of Mocky's Saskamodie, originally released on CD in 2009. In 2009, Mocky made a radical decision: after having become one of the cult figures of the leftfield Berlin electronic music scene of the early 2000s, Mocky retired his sampler and travelled to Paris to embark on an all acoustic journey with the producer Renaud Letang in the vintage Studio Ferber, previously inhabited by the likes of Nina Simone and Serge Gainsbourg. Named after a song he made up when he was seven, using imaginary words, Saskamodie was an instant new future/retro classic: a return to pure musical expression by a cutting-edge artist who was no longer bound by the electronic music scene. Saskamodie was a brave step into unchartered waters, the sound of a musician exploring where his talent can take him with rare confidence and authority. At different points you could hear a vintage soundtrack suite, a debonair jazz record (minus the solos) or a golden era '60s soul ballad recording... yet, as if all these charming stylistic sorties weren't loveable enough, cut Saskamodie through the middle and you'll find that sweet, inescapably infectious melody is the lifeblood trickling through its core. Mocky is listed as playing drums, bass, Rhodes, piano, guitar, percussion, bells, recorder, vocals, whistle, organ. and toys as well as writing string arrangements. Taylor Savvy, Gonzales, Jamie Lidell, and Feist contribute additional instrumental and backing vocal performances that make this record sound more like a live performance than a studio creation. Saskamodie has definitely stood the test of time and Mocky still successfully follows the path he started with this recording -- be it on his series of digital Moxtapes, his album Key Change (HEAVY 003CD/LP, 2015), his recent "recorded-in-one-day" jazz album A Day At United (HEAVY 007CD/LP, 2018), his score for the Japanese Netflix anime Carole & Tuesday or his writing and production work for the likes of Feist or Kelela. Originally only released as CD/digital download, this ten-year anniversary, limited edition vinyl edition brings Saskamodie to its original form, re-mastered for deluxe 180 gram vinyl and accompanied by an exclusive bonus 7" with a new single edit of the album's hit "Birds Of A Feather", a solo piano version of "Guiding Light" by Chilly Gonzales, the cover version of "Birds Of A Feather" by LA's underground funk sensation Vulfpeck, and a remix featuring Wu Tang's GZA.

COMPANY 1981 2LP
Previously unreleased recordings by various line-ups drawn from Derek Bailey, Tristan Honsinger, Christine Jeffrey, Toshinori Kondo, Charlie Morrow, David Toop, Maarten Altena, Georgie Born, Lindsay Cooper, Steve Lacy, Radu Malfatti, and Jamie Muir. Journalists often make the brief history of free improvisation conform to the idea that the history of music is a nice straight line from past to present: Beethoven... Brahms... Boulez. Thus Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, and John Stevens -- together with Brötzmann and co across the Channel -- were the trailblazing "first generation", forging a wholly new language alongside contemporary avant-garde and free jazz. Figures like Toshinori Kondo and David Toop, willing as they were to incorporate snippets of all kinds of music, were the pesky "second generation", happily cocking a snook at the "ideological purity" of Bailey's non-idiomatic improvisation. Company 1981 shows up the foolishness -- the wrongness -- of such storylines. Check the eclectic collection of guests Bailey invited to Company Weeks over the years. He had clear ideas about the music, but he was no ideological purist. One of the founders of Fluxus, Charlie Morrow, injects blasts of Cageian fun into half the recordings here, whether blurting military fanfares from his trumpet, or intoning far-flung scraps of speech. Cellist Tristan Honsinger and vocalist Christine Jeffrey join in the joyful glossolalia, while Bailey, Toop, and Kondo contribute delicious, delicate, hooligan Arabesques, by turns. The remainder are performed by a different ensemble: Bailey, bassist Maarten Altena, former Henry Cow members Georgie Born and Lindsay Cooper on cello and bassoon, the insanely inventive Jamie Muir on percussion, and trombonist Radu Malfatti, showing his mastery of extended technique. Were that not enough, there's the inimitable purity of Steve Lacy's soprano ringing high and clear above the melee. Glorious! There's always been this idea that free improvisation is somehow difficult listening, but when the doors of perception are thrown open and prejudice cast aside, you realize that it's not difficult at all. "Is it that easy?" chirps Morrow, at one point. Indeed it is. Enjoy yourself. Housed in a gatefold sleeve with printed innersleeves.

AMBARCHI & MARTIN NG FEAT. ENSEMBLE OFFSPRING, OREN The Vanishing 2LP
The Vanishing is the long-awaited return of abstract electronic duo Oren Ambarchi and Martin Ng, in a remarkable collaboration with the acclaimed new music group Ensemble Offspring. Working together with the ensemble in 2013 for a series of concerts and recording sessions, Ambarchi and Ng developed a suite of pieces that build on the distinctive sonic language established by their three previous duo albums -- released between 2000 and 2006 -- of ringing bell-like tones and sustained hums with a new palette of acoustic textures. Recording material together as a duo as they had in the past, Ambarchi and Ng then supervised Ensemble Offspring as they recreated these recordings on their instruments, using the original recordings as audio scores. The result is a disorienting play of mirroring and imitation that blurs the boundaries between acoustic & electronic sound. On the opening piece, the aptly named "Simulacrum I", bowed violin harmonics mimic feedback tones and dispersed vibraphone attacks recall the glitching bell textures prominent in Ambarchi and Ng's earlier work for electric guitar and turntable, which were themselves often uncannily reminiscent of acoustic sounds such as Tibetan prayer bowls. On "Woods", two vibrating bass drums create an ominous landscape of rumbling tones that call to mind Ambarchi's past work with abstract doom lords Sunn O))). Channeling giants of 20th century music, such as Giacinto Scelsi and Luigi Nono, as well as contemporary composers like Klaus Lang, the restrained palette of strings and percussion present throughout the record creates a distinct sound world, yet each of the five pieces possesses its own compositional identity. On "Recife" (arranged by Australian composer James Rushford), Ambarchi and Ng's guitar and turntables join Ensemble Offspring for one of the record's highlights, a delicate tapestry woven from subtly overlapping sonic events. Finally, the closing side-long title piece acts as the perfect summation of the record as a whole: beginning in silence, it builds into a densely buzzing texture of closely tuned harmonics before gently returning to the silence from which it came. Intended as the next step in a continuing project in which Ambarchi and Ng will go on to use these two LPs directly as part of their live performances, The Vanishing is a unique document of two artists reimagining the potential of their previous work, made possible through collaboration with a group of world-class musicians.

"Is this the album that made country cool? Former Byrds Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman picked up where they left off with Sweetheart of the Rodeo with this stunning masterpiece of a debut album by The Flying Burrito Bros. While Parsons had already pushed rock in a country direction during his brief stint with The Byrds and The International Submarine Band, The Gilded Palace of Sin is why the Burritos are widely viewed as the inventors of country rock. Indeed with this album, Hillman and Parsons carved a substantial place in music history as one of the most influential albums and bands of all time. 'As a songwriter, Parsons delivered some of his finest work on this set; 'Hot Burrito No. 1' and 'Hot Burrito No. 2' both blend the hurt of classic country weepers with a contemporary sense of anger, jealousy, and confusion ... no one ever brought rock and country together quite like The Flying Burrito Bros., and this album remains their greatest accomplishment.' --All Music Guide. 180-gram 33 RPM pressing, pressed at RTI and packaged in old style ''tip-on'' jacket. TURNER'S CRYSTAL BAND, HENRY Music 12"
Kalita Records present the first ever 12" reissue of Henry Turner Jr.'s hugely sought-after 1980 disco single, "Music", backed by the first ever re-release of his 1984 boogie single "Forever Us". The latter is equally as great, commanding three-figure sums and demonstrating clearly America's development by the mid-1980s away from disco and towards the boogie craze. In addition, the release is accompanied with a never-before-seen press photo of Henry's band Crystal and interview-based liner notes. Based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the Crystal band consisted of Henry on guitar with local musicians Ranches Hall on keyboards and vocals and Ricky Broomfield on drums. By the tail end of the 1970s, Crystal had settled themselves into the local music scene, and performed at many nearby venues. By 1980, the band were ready to record their first single, "Music", in the hope that it would be a radio hit. As Henry explains, "we were driven performers and 'Music' was the perfect tool to get us radio play". They decided to pay to lay down and press their music at Soundsmith Recording Studio, which had the ability to not only record but to also manufacture and release their music on the studio's own eponymously-named label. Only five hundred copies of the record were pressed, distributed by the band themselves, meaning that today, copies almost never turn up for sale. A fantastic disco track, upon release the band deservedly succeeded in their original aim, and it was a radio hit in Baton Rouge. Within four years of "Music's" release, Ranches Hall had left the band, reducing it to two core members: Henry and Ricky. However, still eager for success, the now-slimmed down Crystal band recorded "Forever Us" over a couple of days as a follow-up single to "Music", laying down their instruments at the local Sound Trax Studio, produced by Henry himself. In contrast to the number of additional session musicians that had performed on their first record, here only Henry and Ricky contributed, playing all the instruments and providing the vocals themselves. On release, the record received notable success, not only in the US but also across the pond on the UK scene. Since then, Henry has continued to release both his and other musicians' music on his own Hit City label, as well as developing his musical style and cementing himself in at the core of the Baton Rouge music scene.

WRUHME, ROBAG Topinambur 12"
In future times, culture historians will refer to Gabor Schablitzki, aka Robag Wruhme, as a creator of a singular techno sound, a rock in the murky sea of arbitrary musical dullness that befell mankind in the early 21st century. Furthermore, a lesser known quality of Schablitzki will be praised and explored: he was a relentless wordsmith, a deeply passionate inventor of elegant idioms that enriched German language. Take "Freggelswuff" or "Wemmel" as shining examples. It's within this context that a certain cultural artefact released on a Cologne-based record label called Kompakt (which towards the end of the 21st century made a hardly publicized turn to manufacturing CO2-neutral wall plug systems) that went by the sonorous title Topinambur has to be mentioned. Legend has it that Schablitzki claimed to have created the word "Topinambur", unknowingly that local farmers have been marketing a root tuber under the same name since it got imported from America in 1610AD. The following tenacious copyright lawsuit between Schablitzki and a large agricultural consortium lasted for many years. It isn't considered as a highpoint in Schablitzki's turbulent life but it still serves a staircase wit that is passed on from generation to generation amongst Black Forest moonshiners.

COMES, THE No Side LP
Official reissue of No Side, the debut from seminal Japanese hardcore band The Comes. Originally released in 1983 on Dogma Records, a newly created City Rocker's side label to release hardcore/hard punk, No Side remains a milestone of first wave Japanese hardcore. A vital document to understand the days when the Tokyo hardcore scene was small and unknown with G.I.S.M., Execute, Gauze, and The Comes as main runners. Bands who shared stages, record labels and who grew to be one of the most varied, influential and enigmatic punk scenes of the planet. The Comes' music is frantic and sharp punk, bass-driven and manic sounding with vocalist Chitose's aggressive vocals punctuating every syllable and dominating the tunes. Like most first wave hardcore acts, they own their own sound. And although many times imitated, it has never been matched. Comes in an old-school, paste-on board sleeve with a faithfully replicated insert.

MORTAZAVI, MOHAMMAD REZA Ritme Jaavdanegi LP
"Mohammad Reza Mortazavi is a virtuoso percussionist known for playing traditional Persian instruments such as the tombak and daf. After developing more than thirty new striking techniques and progressing to be one of the most prominent players in Iran, Mortazavi travelled to Germany, eventually settling in Berlin to record and perform regular concerts the world over. His acclaimed performances have taken in venues such as Berlin Philharmonie and Sydney Opera House. In recent years, he has been embraced by the experimental electronic music community, collaborating with Burnt Friedman, Fis and Mark Fell. Ritme Jaavdanegi is Mortazavi's sixth LP, and his first one available on vinyl. The album came together from recordings made in Berlin in June 2019, inspired by Mortazavi's vivid reminiscence about profound experiences he had listening to music as a child. As he drifted in this time-slipping reverie, the phrase 'ritme jaavdanegi' or 'rhythm of eternity' came to mind, and he found the phrase itself to match the 11/8 metre he was striving for. As such, all eight pieces on this album adhere to this time signature, which in itself harks back to the Aksak, a rhythmic pattern based on the alteration of binary and ternary quantities executed in a fast tempo, intrinsic to traditional music from Iran, Turkey, Afghanistan and the Balkans. In the same way these non-standard folk rhythms started to impact on Western music in the early 20th Century, so now you can hear an ever-increasing embrace of polyrhythms and metres that break away from the dominant 4/4 ideology. What's most striking about Ritme Jaavdanegi, perceived through a lens of modern Western experimental music, is how Mortazavi's virtuosic playing rivals the intensely programmed dynamics of electronica. His rapid, needlepoint drum hits bend their tonality in incredibly musical ways, but there is still an underlying focus on cyclical repetition that encourages the same ancient transcendental quality that so many contemporary artists strive for."

KRIEGEL, VOLKER Two Concerts (Lagos 1979 & Bochum 1990) 2CD
"The digitalisation of Volker Kriegel's private audio tape archive (1943-2003) conserves the musical legacy of one of the great musicians and pioneers of jazz rock in Germany. Familiar as well as unknown facets of Volker Kriegel's music became accessible again in best possible sound, complemented by rare or previously unreleased bonus material. With the present recordings we open another chapter and present two fascinating concert recordings from two very different creative phases in Volker Kriegel's life: one dating from 1979, with the Mild Maniac Orchestra and guests in Lagos, Nigeria, and the other from 1990, with his last band in Bochum. In 1979 Volker Kriegel was well established in the German and European jazz rock scene. Under the aegis of the Goethe-Institute he and his Mild Maniac Orchestra and guests toured for seven weeks through eleven countries of West- and East Africa in early 1979. Exploring Kriegel's personal tape archive unearthed the recordings from the Africa tour, with some 30 hours of concert recordings on a total of 15 tapes! Among these, this evening of two concerts in Lagos showed the most convincing playing and recording quality, both artistically and acoustically. Time leap into 1990: Volker Kriegel plays with a new band in Bochum. Only keyboarder Thomas Bettermann remains from the old Mild Maniac Orchestra line-up. This last career phase of Volker Kriegel as bandleader had so far only been documented by his one studio album, Palazzo Blue (1987). The recordings from Bochum are the perfect live counterpart. Volker Kriegel, naturally forms the center of the action, in which however the individual talents of his fellow musicians could fully unfold: saxophonist Christof Lauer with his powerful, expressive playing, keyboarder Thomas Bettermann as soloist and sensitive companion of Kriegel, and Michael Schürmann and Thomas Alkier as perfectly coordinated rhythm team."

SA PA In A Landscape 2LP
"Rain, spit, ice, neon, plants, steam, mercury and soil. This is dream music categorised by a language of senses; visual, poetic, and abstract sound that draws on techno and dub ambient. Somewhere between pastoral impressionism and cyber-noir, its surface evokes the tensions of a fluctuating, fizzing atmosphere, pictures emerging and dissolving in the mind's eye. Thick layers of field recording flood tracks fabricated from erratic, oddly distanced rhythm. The sensation whilst listening is not unlike hearing the world from a place within the body; swimming in the bloodstream, cutting through the turbulent landscape secure in a metal tube. Or being over-exposed to lushly textured environments with the anatomy far receded; an out-of-body experience where subtler senses are heightened and the landscape begins to take on surreal qualities."

SCHICKERT & PETER UNSICKER, GUNTER Mauerharfe LP+CD
LP version. Includes CD. Edition of 300. Günter Schickert, krautrock maestro of echo-driven psychedelia, returns on Marmo Music one-year-and-half after the release of the Labyrinth LP (MARMO 001LP, 2018). Mauerharfe consists of old and special material, which has officially never seen the light before. Berlin, August 1990, first post-wall Summer. Two friends, the locals Günter Schickert and gallerist Peter Unsicker perform a spectacular yet symbolically intimate interpretation of those epochal changing days by building a sound installation with a damaged piece of the Berlin Wall. They persuade the patrol "Feliks Dzierzynski" of the DDR army to transport and relocate a piece outside Peter's Wall Street Gallery on the Zimmer Strasse, in the borough of Mitte, where only a few months back the intact structure actually passed through. Once the wall was positioned, they bend down the bars of the iron structure that crop out the concrete, bind piano chords to them, stretch the strings down to the bodom base of the construct and connect guitar amplifiers to the set up. The Berlin Wall is ready to be played as a harp. Günter Schickert's Mauerharfe are executed between August and October 1990, resulting into three long field recordings. "Aufnahme bei Mauerblu?ten, Sommer 1990" features a 19-minute long piece. The tape-induced background noise lays down a carpet of haunting atmospheres and introduces the experiment. Günter starts to test the chords by pulling out, with his fingers, dry and acid timbers. The warm-up evolves by investigating wider sinusoidal waves and dilated metallic riffs. The track takes the form of a more conventional music narration, as the artist bangs the harp with a sort of rudimental violin bow creating marching percussive patterns. On "Zwei Spuren nacheinander aufgenommen, Herbst 1990", a similarly long take opens up with ferocious urge, like being catapulted into a warfare between iron and cement. As the strings get hit and pulled, the metal seems to crash into thousands of pieces, dissolving into merciless distortions. The third piece (CD-only), "Mauerharfe 3", is a 30-minute long performance dated August the 13th, 1990. As Schickert recalls, 29 years before exactly on that same date, the construction of the Berlin wall was accomplished. The recording is cleaner than the previous two, giving more width and definition to the sounds resulting in discrete and meditative, deep, gong-like percussive timbers. Includes exclusive pictures, liner notes, a prose poem by Peter Unsicker and some draft writings by the artists with reflections on the project.

CASINO TIMES Rush/Kawai 12"
Mireia welcomes Casino Times with Rush/Kawai plus three captivating remixes by Conga Fever, Rigopolar, and Filburt. Casino Times, aka Nicholas Church, and Joseph Spencer from London have been betting against the house for close to ten years already, winning big with releases on Wolf Music, Needwant, Omena, and their own Casino Edits label. The pair also hosts the radio show "What's My Derivative?" on Bloop Radio. Since Mireia's big cheeses RSS Disco have been keen to gamble with the Time's music, routinely lighting up dancefloors with it, a loose connection and mutual admiration formed over the years and eventually lead to this fine record here. Casino Times demonstrate their cunning yet natural and flowing sound with two originals: "Rush" and "Kawai". Both tracks are a proper trip of its own, psychedelic pinball machines that'll catapult you to the further edges of the known sphere. An arpeggiated melody line leads the "Rush", while a rock-solid foundation of hard-hitting drums keep you steady. The melody filters into acidic fringes and a strange voice guides the traveler to the core of this outer-body experience. By intertwining a pulsating E-Bass with sharp percussions and a brazen guitar chords, "Kawai" steers the travels even further out of world's reach. A whole ensemble of sirens and vocal fragments warn of imminent rapture. After this, it'll be hard to return to the mundane.

SIN FANG Sad Party LP
LP version. Includes printed inner sleeve; includes download code. After his collaboration with Sóley and múm's Örvar Smárason for the 2018 album Team Dreams (MORR 150CD/LP), Sad Party sees Sindri Sigfússon take things into his own hands again. As a result of frantic and mostly improvised jam sessions, the nine pop songs are as bittersweet as the title suggests, meandering between Sin Fang's trademark knack for catchy melodies, rich sonic textures, and advanced musical experimentalism. Psychedelic and melancholic at once, it brings Sigfússon's many different musical facets into a consistent and irresistible flow. Sad Party was recorded by Sigfússon alone over the course of three weeks in an old wooden studio in downtown Reykjavík before it was, like so many Icelandic venues in recent times, closed for good thanks to rising rents. "It had a wonderful view, something most music studios do not have," says Sigfússon of the place, where he had spent so much time recording, drinking, and playing table tennis in the past years. Now he locked himself in for three weeks to throw a very last Sad Party. Aiming for the music to be "not too fast and not too slow, not too loud and not too quiet", the songwriter followed a radical stream of consciousness approach for the lyrics. Starting with lush and warm drones, the opener "Planet Arfth" sets the mood for Sin Fang's fifth solo record just perfectly. This is goodbye, the wordless vocals in the background seem to say -- but we're going to make the best of it, counters the slow hip-hop groove that takes center stage midway through the track. Soon giving way for slow and funky dream pop sounds ("Hollow"), Sad Party slowly picks up speed with intricately built rhythms ("No Summer"), piano-driven power pop ("Smother") and even IDM-influenced electronica ("Goldenboy Is Sleeping"), before the second half makes the melancholy that comes with a farewell audible. The bitter follows the sweet. After a wonderfully psychedelic gem ("Happiness"), a hazy mid-tempo rock ballad ("Never Who I Wanna Be") and a shimmering downbeat piece that highlights Sigfússon's abilities as a producer of experimental electronic music ("Cloudjuice"), "Constellation" serves as the perfect coda to the album. With its underwater lo-fi aesthetics and its psychoactive qualities, it ends the album with just the right amount of anthemic ambiguity. Here's to old places, new beginnings and, most of all, Sin Fang!

"Tony Joe White was an influential musician in the '60s and '70s swamp rock scene. As one of the creators of this sound he recorded different hit songs, like 'Rainy Night In Georgia' and 'Polk Salad Annie'. The exclusive 2LP Collected title covers his music from the '60s until the '00s, including duets with different artists. After Tony signed his first contract in 1967 he recorded multiple singles without success. In 1969 'Polk Salad Annie' charted in the U.S., reaching number 8. He recorded multiple albums in the late '60s early '70s. As he became more popular other musicians started covering his songs, like Dusty Springfield's 'Willie and Laura Mae Jones' and Brook Benton's 'Rainy Night in Georgia'. Both songs charted in the cover versions and made him a well-known artist. During the '90s and '00s he recorded more albums and singles, including classics like 'Ain't Going Down This Time' and '(You're Gonna) Look Good In Blues'. All his hits, fan favorites and unknown gems are included on this fantastic 2LP album. Limited edition of 2000 copies on red vinyl. Includes liner notes, 180 gram vinyl, gatefold sleeve."

NEUROSIS & JARBOE Neurosis & Jarboe 2LP
Double LP version. "Neurot Recordings are proud to reissue the landmark collaboration Neurosis & Jarboe, which was originally released in 2003. This latest version is fully remastered and with entirely new artwork from Aaron Turner, available on vinyl for the first time, as well as CD and digital formats. When two independent and distinct spheres overlap, the resulting ellipse tends to emphasize the most striking and powerful characteristics of each body. Such is the case with this particular collaboration between heavy music pioneers Neurosis and the multi-faceted performer Jarboe (who performed in Swans and who has collaborated with an array of people from Blixa Bargeld, J.G. Thirlwell, Attila Csihar, Bill Laswell, Merzbow, Justin K. Broadrick, Helen Money, Father Murphy, the list goes on...) The musicians pull from one another some of the most harrowing and unusual sounds ever heard from either artist at the time -- a sentiment which also rings true to some fifteen years later. The collaboration is a deeply textured mosaic that is a culmination of merged aesthetics from two major influences on free-thinking sounds. It unlocked the hidden potential of electronic music as a new force in heavy rock. At a time when groups like Oneida, Wolf Eyes and Black Dice were beginning to experiment with technology in making mind-numbing leaden electro-drone freed from any essence of 'dance music,' Neurosis & Jarboe redefined all notions of their past -- and outlined the course of heavy music to come."

HURTLING Future From Here LP
LP version. Future From Here is the debut album from Hurtling. Jen Macro, their guitarist and singer, wrote most of the songs while touring in My Bloody Valentine. The album kicks-off at the "Start", a beginning of sweet melodies and a love song from "me to you", crunching straight into "Memory Cassette", a sun-drenched medicine for melancholy. "Feel It", bold and courageous dives deeper into darker spheres, while "Summer" paints beautiful melodious colors over the top of your sunscreen, lifting you out of your melancholy gently and purposefully. The more luscious pop tones of "Eb One", or "Alone", are tales of love and loss, contrasting with the heavy, crunching agitation of "Please Don't Know Us". The journey is characterized in "Call To Arms", Jen's voice drops to a whisper, in a courageous desire to move stridently into the future. Influences include The Breeders, Elliott Smith, and Sonic Youth, to name a few, as well as reflecting the dreamy, hazy atmospheres of My Bloody Valentine, whose live band Macro has been a member for a number of years.

PLANETARY ASSAULT SYSTEMS Plantae 2x12"
As Planetary Assault Systems, Luke Slater is an innovator of psychedelic mindfuck techno. Across a lengthy catalog that stretches back into the '90s, the music's bleepy, polyrhythmic loops are as recognizable as they are genre-defining. Plantae is Slater's first release as PAS on Ostgut Ton since Arc Angel (OSTGUT 037CD/023LP, 2016) and covers the spectrum of PAS's different strains while remaining grounded in Slater's uncanny funk and knack for developing oblique melodies and rhythms over longer stretches. Deepness and hypnosis come as much through duration as sound design. For Slater, Plantae is made for Berghain, where he is a long-standing resident. In his own words: "I'm sure it's no surprise that when it comes to putting together a release on Ostgut Ton, PAS takes on its more mind-altering, otherworldly quality by natural cause, quietly reflecting the dark sweaty nights and days at the club; at the point, the common neural coupling, of us all together. PAS has been part of Berghain and Berghain part of PAS for a long time. All of these tracks needed to pass the Berghain test in my sets first stop."

Locobeach is a NYC-based supergroup comprised of Cheo Pardo (Los Crema Paraíso, Los Amigos Invisibles), Neil Ochoa (Chicha Libre, Los Crema Paraíso), Joshua Camp (Chicha Libre, C.A.M.P.O.S., One Ring Zero), Edward Marshall (La Muy Bestia Pop), and Fernando Valladares (Guaco). This dynamic party band has forged a sound blending cumbia pop and Latin disco with a rock edge that is highly original, and their debut album on Peace & Rhythm is fittingly titled Psychedelic Disco Cumbia. Cheo Pardo explains, "after doing a fair share of live shows and getting the band tight we thought it was time to make a record. We wanted to work it old school; try the tracks live, make them tight, bulletproof and then get in to the studio." The results are diverse, fun, and infectious with classic tropical music meeting psychedelic rock, as well as disco, funk, and Latin house mixed with surf, chicha and spaghetti western influences that build a cohesive Locobeach sound, equaling "dance music for your brain".

2019 repress. 2x12" version, part 1. The distance from Ricardo Villalobos' last field trip Thé au Harem d'Archimède (PERL 043CD) in 2004 to the present epic album is a galaxy of electronic expression through sound, independent from time and space. It is said that funk is defined by the notes that are not being played. The space between the notes here is so vast, that funk becomes transformed into the spirit that creates unfathomable emotional adventure. The rules of dynamics between 0 and 1 shift the relation from reality to relaxation. Previously-unreleased, mixed, free-floating sessions are made out of natural, secret ingredients from the limbic system of astro-Aztecs. They evolve from rituals, ending in the release of the sinuous percussion ghost from the machine who breathes out a score for easy living, which sounds like a primordial soup aerosol of funky molecules and molluscs. It's a formula that those already caught in 30/70's celestial web are fully aware of; first defined on the local heat of their 2015 debut Cold Radish Coma and majestically expanded upon with their critically acclaimed 2017 release Elevate on Bradley Zero's Rhythm Section International (mixed by Hiatus Kaiyote's Paul Bender). Elevate (RS 020LP, 2018) did exactly that -- elevating both the scope of the band's sound as well as their standing in the local and international community. Since the last record was released, the music has brought the band on world tours and to the attention of the wider public and key tastemakers alike. Strongly supported by the likes of Gilles Peterson, Tom Ravenscroft, Jamie Cullum, Matthew Halsall, and Bradley Zero, the UK has become something of a second home for 30/70. London in particular has openly embraced the soulful sounds of Melbourne, as evidenced by Gilles' latest Brownswood compilation Sunny Side Up which features three tracks from 30/70 members: Ziggy Zeitgeist, Horatio Luna, and Allysha Joy. The record is a follow-up to his era-defining survey of the UK jazz scene We Out Here, the compilation that kickstarted a whole generation of London's under-the-radar jazz kids to global headlining heights. It would appear you're about to witness this same effect take place for the Melbourne contingent, of which 30/70 lead the charge. The city's invasion is well and truly upon us. While London is undoubtedly in love with what's happening in Melbourne right now, this is no one way love affair. The 30/70 collective have had their ears to the ground and plugged into the sound of the UK underground. This new album takes inspiration from the syncopation of broken-beat, the immediacy of grime and dub's sonic aesthetic to create something that is a truly global amalgamation of local sounds, finessed by Allysha Joy's instantly recognizable vocals; the rawest and realest of voices.

"The forthcoming ninth edition of the popular compilation series featuring long-lost vintage 60s-70s proto-metal and stoner rock singles, Brown Acid - The Ninth Trip is set for release! Some of the best thrills of the Internet music revolution are the ability to find extremely rare music with great ease. But even with such vast archives to draw from, quite a lot of great songs have gone undiscovered for nearly half a century -- particularly in genres that lacked hifalutin arty pretense. Previously, only the most extremely dedicated and passionate record collectors had the stamina and prowess to hunt down long forgotten wonders in dusty record bins -- often hoarding them in private collections, or selling at ridiculous collector's prices. Legendary compilations like Nuggets, Pebbles, ad nauseum, have exhausted the mines of early garage rock and proto-punk, keeping alive a large cross-section of underground ephemera. HENRIKSEN, ARVE The Timeless Nowhere 4LP BOX/2CD
In a world where being loud seems to be the only ticket for attention, Arve Henriksen has somewhat quietly and without much ado established himself as an important, major player on the European jazz scene. In his 20 years with Rune Grammofon counting 11 solo albums (including one for ECM) and 12 albums with Supersilent (including two for Smalltown Supersound), in addition to four albums with Food as well as numerous collaborations, far too many to mention here. During these years he has also performed quite extensively in Europe, in later years being more choose-y, often preferring more unique venues and locations. Consisting of unreleased material from around ten years back and up until 2019, The Timeless Nowhere is not a compilation in the traditional sense, but can still be seen as a career overview including many facets of his work, at the same time portraying an artist on an unstoppable quest for discovery through exploration. Indeed, these are also four individual albums that could easily have justified separate releases, but at this stage in Arve's artistic journey it also made perfect sense to assemble them as a box set. The common denominator is about inspiration drawn from composers, collaborators, new discoveries and more specifically; spontaneous interaction with other musicians without other purposes than the music itself. No talk, no demands, no intentions, no explaining; just music in a timeless nowhere. "Captured Under Mountainsides" points to the wild landscape scenery of the area where Arve grew up in the western part of Norway; overwhelming and often strikingly beautiful, but also isolated and with a sense of melancholy. "Acousmograph" is Arve on his own, inspired by compositions and musicians, more experimental in nature and partly based on sketch recordings in odd locations. "Cryosphere" is a co-production with long-time collaborator Jan Bang re-modelling material from a series of evolving concert performances. "Towards Language - Live At Punkt" could be seen as a departure from Arve´s usual approach, but at the same time it´s not. This is not a static run through -- Arve would never allow that -- but rather the kind of re-imagining process that is such a vital part of his music making.

KA-SPEL & MOTION KAPTURE, EDWARD Alien Subspace CD
"The magic and the voice of Edward Ka-spel (Legendary Pink Dots) meet the ambient and psychedelic prog of Italian duo Motion Kapture, formed by Stefano Rossello (Bahntier, Ketvector) and Filippo Corradin (Bahntier, Lingams & Yoni). Alien Subspace captures and transports us into electronic synth spaces where guitars and basses are dilated in order to catapult us into eclectic stories and visions that only the inspired and melodic voice of Edward Ka-spel knows how to create. The songs are enthralling and romantic for one of the most inspired and best albums Edward Ka-spel has ever made. Influenced by Tangerine Dream, Progressive-Space Rock, Area and Coil, it is surely one of the most important releases in 2019. An absolute must!"

RITA, MARIA Brasileira LP
2019 repress.. Selva Discos present an official reissue of Maria Rita Stumpf's Brasileira, originally released in 1988. Brasileira has been on top of collectors and music lovers' wish lists since "Cântico Brasileiro Nº3 (Kamaiurá)" broke out and cast a spell worldwide. Lucky collectors can listen to the whole album -- with gems such as "Lamento Africano/Rictus" and "A Cidade" -- but it was clear that Brasileira is an oeuvre that more people should have access to. Selva Discos is a new label run by Augusto Olivani and Millos Kaiser (the DJ/production duo known as Selvagem) in partnership with JD Twitch's Optimo Music. Here's an extract from Augusto Olivani and Millos Kaiser's sleeve notes about the Brasileira and the label's launch: "We were aware of the originality and rarity of this album since we put our hands on a copy of the Brasileira LP a few years ago, but it took time to learn that Maria Rita from 'Kamaiurá', the track that carried us away as soon as we first heard it, was the same Maria Rita with whom one of us knew since childhood. To reissue Brasileira became a life mission. Also, it turned to be the seed that allowed Selva Discos to bloom." And another extract, taken from Maria Rita's recollection on the serendipity that triggered this reissue: "Many years passed until I got a call from a close friend saying that his son, whom I had known since childhood, was my fan. I found it funny... I was slowly returning to music after years of directing Antares, a company I created and that brought thousands of artists to Brazil. He was a DJ who played my songs at the Selvagem parties and as he said, did not know that I was me, the same Maria Rita who worked with his father. This was a plot twist, a movie thing." Maria Rita Stumpf is now the owner of Brazilian production company Antares Produções, responsible for bringing international artists, such as Philip Glass and Mikhail Baryshnikov, to Brazil for the past 30 years. After distancing herself from the music business since the original release of Brasileira, she's now back in the game. This reissue was overviewed by Maria Rita Stumpf; Remastered from DAT tape of the original release; Artwork updated by Brazilian design studio Colletivo; Features liner notes by Maria Rita.

PERCEPTION Perception LP
Souffle Continu Records present the first ever vinyl reissue of Perception's self-titled album, originally released in 1971. The story of Perception takes root in a series of chance meetings, which seem at first glance unlikely, between musicians from differing horizons, be they geographic or esthetic. Jazz Magazine was spot on with an article from the period entitled, "Perception, four conceptions", before detailing the origins of the musicians (Hungarian for saxophonist Yochk'O Seffer, German for pianist Siegfried Kessler, French for bassist Didier Levallet, Franco-Vietnamese for drummer Jean-My Truong). It then looked at their varying backgrounds (classical academic training for the first two, an improvised apprenticeship on the jazz scene for the third), in order to point out the seemingly contradictory and perhaps complementary directions which would unite in a singular identity. None of this, however, was clear from the start as the group began as a trio with a different saxophonist, before stabilizing to the first core quartet. Having been remarked on in 1970 by Gérard Terronès, who was already producer of the cult Alors! (Michel Portal), Célesphère (Burton Greene), and Basse Barre (Barre Phillips), Perception was thus given a timely opportunity to record their first album on his Futura Records label. This eponymous opus, illustrated with a drawing by Yochk'O Seffer, is the first of a fascinating trilogy. It puts the seal on those complementary contradictions with a lyrically incandescent free jazz, made up of startling interactions between complex harmonies and disjointed rhythms. Licensed from Futura / Marge. Remastered from the master tapes. Includes four-page booklet with unpublished photos and an essay by Didier Levallet.

PERCEPTION Perception & Friends LP
Souffle Continu Records present the first ever vinyl reissue of Perception & Friends, originally released in 1973. After their first album which came out in 1971 on Futura Records (FFL 051LP), Perception wanted to rapidly record a second, but Gérard Terronès did not want to produce another, especially so soon after the first. Therefore, the only solution was to produce it themselves. It is thus completely logical that it came out on the label of the Association for the Development of Improvised Music (A.D.M.I.) created by Didier Levallet with the aim of promoting creative music (on this subject, this was the same label that also produced the excellent Inter Fréquences (FFL 031LP) by the Free Jazz Workshop). As the album was entirely created from A-to-Z by Perception, they decided on a more ambitious project, exploring a wider palette of colors by augmenting the original quartet with additional instruments. So, it was with numerous guests including Teddy Lasry, Jean-Charles Capon, Kent Carter, and Jean-François Jenny-Clark, that Perception developed still further the apparently contradictory directions which were their specificity. This is further highlighted by the fact that Siegfried Kessler, largely absent on this recording, is temporarily replaced by Manuel Villaroel, a pianist from Chile with a completely different temperament (and, by-the-by, already the name behind the superb Terremoto with the Matchi-oul Septet). Contrary to the first album, which seems in comparison much more compact and united this second (and second-to last, not counting the live recordings), with the many different options proposed, would seem to predict the different directions that musicians from Perception would subsequently take. One track, by Yochk'O Seffer, who had already been part of Magma two years previously, looks forward to the more structured Neffesh Music, whilst, in the opposite direction, another track, by Didier Levallet, is more evocative of the future arrangements on Swing Strings System (1978). It is, to sum up, a nice paradox that all these different elements, from tightly written pieces to wild improvisation, work so well together and are one the key attributes of a group free like few others. Licensed by Perception. Remastered from the master tapes. Includes four-page booklet with unpublished photos and an essay by Didier Levallet.

PERCEPTION Mestari LP
Souffle Continu Records present the first time vinyl reissue of Perception's Mestari, originally released in 1973. To finally become oneself: that was the lesson, in the 1960-1970s, that European musicians attracted to improvisation had learned from American free-jazz. Following this idea, the musicians of Perception, whilst individually accompanying Mal Waldron, Slide Hampton, Johnny Griffin, or Hank Mobley when they played in Paris, decided early on to break free from what was going on across the Atlantic and seek their own authenticity. When Mestari, their third and final album, came out, Yochk'O Seffer, Siegfried Kessler, Didier Levallet, and Jean-My Truong had four years of questing and originality behind them developing their own individual language. A language in which the spontaneity of the improvisations did not exclude influences taken from European folk or classical traditions. Balanced, ethereal, and structured, Mestari was a return to the original core quartet; the previous album included numerous guest musicians (FFL 052LP). It opens infinite perspectives and is totally in phase with what was being produced in France at the same time by Cohelmec Ensemble and the Dharma Quintet.

PERCEPTION Live at Le Stadium CD
Seven years of effervescent activity: few free jazz groups can be proud of such longevity, especially with a line-up as stable as that of Perception. Yes, there would be several guest musicians, including Kent Carter and Jean-Charles Capon, on the second album... Yes the "existential problems" of Siegfried Kessler would necessitate him being temporarily replaced by Manuel Villaroel... But for the most part, it was the core quartet of the first album which would tour Europe, through concerts from Belgium to Germany and including Norway where Perception represented France at the Molde festival. So, few personnel changes then, until towards the end, in 1975, after completing the third album, when drummer Jean-My Truong left and had to be replaced. First by Mino Cinelu, at the time in Opération Rhino and Moravagine, then by Jacques Thollot, already behind the cult albums 1971's Jeter la girafe à la mer (FFL 049LP) and 1975's Watch Devil Go. These changes did not alter the spirit of Perception, as both were able to integrate a group which nevertheless had such a strong identity. There was no recorded trace of Jacques Thollot's time in the group, until Live at Le Stadium came to the rescue. So, this live recording from 1977 is a precious archive, displaying unique and contrasting directions which had first begun to be explored in 1970, following the seminal Our Meanings And Our Feelings by Michel Portal. An archive then, which proves what we already knew, that there were few quartets in Europe at the time capable of reaching such a level, other than that formed on an occasional basis, around the same period, by Gerd Dudek, Joachim Kühn, Peter Warren, and Daniel Humair. Licensed by Perception. Includes six-page booklet with unpublished paintings by Yochko Seffer and an essay by Didier Levallet.

BAROQUE JAZZ TRIO Baroque Jazz Trio + Orientasie/Largo CD
Souffle Continu Records present a reissue of Baroque Jazz Trio's self-titled album, original released on Saravah in 1970. This CD also includes tracks from the 7" Orientasie/Largo originally released in 1970, and reissued by Souffle Continue Records. Mixing Baroque, free-jazz, and world music, the unique album of the Baroque Jazz Trio (which is in fact 3/5 of the Bach Modern Quintet) is a difficult-to-label sound object which is far from being typical of the psychedelic sounds associated with the early 1970s. Because, although fusion with Indian music (amongst others) and jazz (but also pop) was popular at the time, rarely had all this been mixed together with Baroque music. Even mentioning Jacques Loussier adapting Bach does not come close, as here, all barriers are broken down, with an audacity which begins with the highly original and extraordinary use of the harpsichord, an instrument which it is unusual to hear in such a context, even though indicated by the "baroque" in the title. Of course, jazz specialists will mention Johnny Guarnieri in the Gramercy Five with Artie Shaw, Martial Solal playing "Four Brothers" in 1965, or Lalo Schifrin in his homage to the Marquis de Sade? But no, none of these references really makes sense, as they pale in comparison to the wild adventures of Georges Rabol, probably closer to Call Cobbs with Albert Ayler, or, better still, Odile Bailleux in another remarkable French group, Armonicord, than anyone else. With George, the rhythm section is no less outstanding: Jean-Charles Capon, who, two years later would record the magnificent L'Univers-Solitude (FFL 046LP) on the same label, is a flying cello virtuoso, while Philippe Combelle, a great drummer rarely heard in such experimental circumstances, plays daringly mixed percussion. Also noteworthy is the presence of flutist, Michel Roques on one track, who was also behind a Saravah album, the splendid Chorus (FFL 048LP). In France, whether or not groups like Moravagine, Confluence, or Synchro Rhythmic Eclectic Language, working in similarly unusual areas, are taken into account, it is rare to find a group which, like the Baroque Jazz Trio, have been able to so blur the boundaries, especially by adding an exotic breath of fresh air inherited from the Third Stream. This record, alongside the album by Brigitte Fontaine with the Art Ensemble of Chicago made Pierre Barouh stand out as a pioneering producer and destroyer of stylistic frontiers.

OYELANA, TUNJI A Nigerian Retrospective 1966-79 3LP
Restocked. Deluxe gatefold 3LP version on 180 gram vinyl. During the golden age of Nigerian music in the 1970s, Tunji Oyelana elevated the realm of pop music by infusing it with the poetic storytelling of Yoruba folklore, blending the fashionable sounds of highlife, Afrobeat, Afro-rock, funk, calypso, juju and reggae and transforming them into something timelessly unique. Tunji's first records came out in 1969 but it wasn't until two years later that the first record credited to Tunji Oyelana & The Benders, Agba Lo De/Koriko Nde, was released. The record turned out to be the smash that put the name Tunji Oyelana & The Benders on the national map. More significantly, the record's unique sound signaled the emergence of a new era and a new genre in Nigerian music. Tunji eventually signed to EMI Nigeria, his first eponymously-titled release on the label in 1974 yielding the instant classic "To Whom It May Concern." For Oyelana himself, the golden age continues as he lives with his family in London and continues to perform several nights a week at Emukay, the restaurant and cultural center that he runs with his wife, which has become a mecca for fans eager for the privilege of beholding a living legend at work. VA Onda De Amor: Synthesized Brazilian Hits That Never Were (1984-94) 2LP
Repressed; Double LP version. Gatefold sleeve. 16 rare synth cuts from '80s and '90s Brazil, compiled by Brazilian DJ Millos Kaiser. Some crate-digging compilations are often the result of someone hand-picking their choice favorites from another country's musical history, perhaps unaware or uninvolved with its cultural lineage in the process. On Soundway's latest release -- a treasure trove of synth jams, pop, samba boogie, Balearic, and electro from '80s and '90s Brazil -- the tracks are picked by Millos Kaiser, one half of the Brazilian duo Selvagem, who are at the helm of throwing some of the country's best dance parties. It's a rare compilation that offers Brazilian music actually picked by a Brazilian. Whilst names such as Ricardo Bomba, Villa Box, Fogo Baiano, Electric Boogies, and Batista Junior may not be household names, they tell an untold, yet rich and important part of musical history in Brazil. The release also covers a decade that has been intentionally forgotten and brushed aside by many in the country. Onda De Amor is a release that is loaded with smooth grooves, bubbling bass, glistening synthesizers, funk-strutting guitar lines, and sheen of production that undeniably marks it of its time. For Kaiser this compilation is about reintroducing music during a period of reappraisal, catching a new wave and hoping contemporary listeners will ride it with him. "The idea is to do justice to these songs. Songs that combine all the right ingredients that should have put them on radio playlists when I was growing up or at least in the cases of more adventurous DJs." Millos Kaiser is a DJ, digger, vinyl junkie/dealer born in Rio de Janeiro and living in São Paulo for the past eight years. He launched the dance party/club night Selvagem with partner Trepanado in 2010, bringing thousands of dancers one Sunday a month to a public square in the heart of São Paulo. RIYL: Music From Memory's Outro Tempo Brazil compilation (MFM 016CD/LP, 2017), Spacetalk compilations, Sabor Do Brasil compilations, Selvagem's Boiler Room set, Mr Bongo's Brazilian compilations. Features Ricardo Bomba, Vânia Bastos, Rosana Mendes & Grupo Veneno, Grupo Controle Digital, Villa Box, Batista Junior, Dado Brazzawilly, Anacy Arcanjo, Fogo Baiano, Dodô Da Bahia & As Virgens De Porto Seguro, Via Negromonte, Electric Boogies, Os Abelhudos, Nanda Rossi, André Melo, and Região Abissal. FIRST TONE Reactions 2LP
Reactions is the debut album from First Tone, the musical partnership of New Orleans-based artists Turk Dietrich (Second Woman, Belong) and composer Duane Pitre (Important Records). While the project has been at work quietly sculpting their sound for years, Reactions is the first available set of recordings. Those familiar with the respective works of the two artists will be happy to find a collection of music that is very much of the duo, and yet totally unlike anything they've produced before. Over six tracks, First Tone unfurl poignant, flickering compositional works that utilize pitch material that is tuned using the system known as Just Intonation (which Pitre has studied for nearly 15 years) in conjunction with various software and a single hardware synth. The result is a collection of music that is both organic and alien. Layers of tone and texture build and dissolve from the ultra-minimal to the enormous, on occasion seamlessly blending the two. A wide array of striking timbres patiently wash over one another, at times sounding like organic instruments, at other times sounding completely otherworldly. Reactions is a masterclass not only in sound design and dynamic range, but also in sonic depth. The album's approach to the usage of time and dynamics work together to create the perception of a three-dimensional spaciousness of sound. The holographic effects produced from the spaces between the album's sounds are mesmerizing, with discreet arrangements that demand repeat listens to fully absorb.

COMIX Comix LP+CD
Spittle Records present a reissue of Comix's self-titled album, originally released in 1981. One of the most treasured French minimal wave records is back on vinyl. Comix, a duo of guitarist/composer André Demay and DJ/singer Natan Hercberg, are a one album project. Their first single "Touche Pas Mon Sexe", recorded in 1979, has been refused by several record companies, but duo finally found home on French branch of Virgin. They released two singles and one full-length LP in 1981, and appeared on the compilation BIPPP: French Synth-Wave 1979/85 (BORNBAD 002LP, 2012) a few decades later. The music was composed by André with a legendary Roland TR-808 (Marvin Gaye, Kraftwerk, and Afrika Bambaataa used the same drum machine for their hits at the same time). Natan wrote the lyrics, filling comic speech bubbles. Their production was somewhat different to mainstream "nouvelle vague" artists: much more positive and ironic than their chart mates. However, Comix didn't have much success with their songs in '80s, but they were rediscovered in 21st century with the strong resurging interest in original minimal wave/cold wave artists. Here they are again, young and bold, as nearly 40 years ago. Includes CD.

After Caper Tran (SYST 118EP, 2018) and Dimension D EP (SYST 122-6EP), it's time again for real techno music: "Upiter" shows you how musically the Croatian-German friendship team is able to create dark and deep tech tunes. The warm and catchy arpeggio combined with a shuffling 808 groove takes us to a journey of spacy and trippy spheres. "Ex Machina" is forward-thinking techno music however with the spirit as it was made in the '90s when the machines were the masters of the music and ruled the structure of the song. The track surprises with unexpected turning points and moving sound synthesis.

CONSUMER In Computers LP
"Consumer formed in 2017 to generate reptile-brain, late capitalist agitprop. Its main tools are over-processed riffs played at high volume, impressionistic slogans, and soundscapes built from analog synths, broken electronics, and tape loops. Past your well-stocked garage, descending into Mammon's deep world of darkness, with regional coupon circulars in hand, Consumer offers doomy, electro, post-whatever. Featuring Tim Macuga from Have A Nice Life as well as Have a Nice Life's live band Myke Cameron (bass), Rich Otero (drums, synths, programming), and Joe Streeter (guitar/engineering)."

VA Wacker That Cassette
Touch Sensitive Records marks its fifth birthday with Wacker That, the label's first ever compilation of music from contemporary artists. Featuring contributions from family and friends, the selection follows the non-linear trajectory the label has pursued over its half decade. From Radio Weirdo's spectral opener, to Autumns' dark-techno thump, through Cherrystones' mutoid groove, Bloom's abstract, avant-grime and wrapping up with Natalia Beylis's (Woven Skull) cozy, cosmic coda for electronic piano. There's a bunch of other stops along the way introducing new cuts from Sonopy, Barry Lynn (Boxcutter, The Host), Ai Messiah, Fears, Gross Net, Documenta, Elaine Howley (The Altered Hours), and Group Zero. Wacker That, then. A celebration of five years under the vibrating plate and an excited look to the future in twelve deadly tunes.

PHENOMENAL HANDCLAP BAND Remain Silent 12"
Phenomenal Handclap Band is back on Toy Tonics with remixes by Superpitcher and Ray Mang. The New York indie disco crew delivers their third song to the Berlin dancefloor label. Their last two Toy Tonics singles, Judge Not (TOYT 081EP, 2018) and Jail (TOYT 093EP, 2019), have already made big waves with heavy rotations in the sets of people like DJ Harvey, Artwork, Gilles Peterson, Keinemusik, and many others. Now they are back with another surefire smash: "Remain Silent". The Phenomenal Handclap Band from New York has been known for a couple of funk-driven releases before, but also for supporting or collaborating with such giants as Bryan Ferry, Marcos Valle, and Nile Rodgers & Chic. The band, based around multi-instrumentalist and producer Daniel Collás, is releasing this new single in advance of their new album on Toy Tonics in 2020. This is just a warm up!

MAHOTELLA QUEENS, THE Meet The Mahotella Queens LP
"The 1966 debut album from the legendary Mahotella Queens and the very first LP on the iconic Motella label. Deluxe vinyl and digital reissue. Not long ago - about two years -- the country was swept by a craze for a fantastic new kind of jive. First presented and popularised by The Mahotella Queens, it shows no signs of decreasing -- in fact it gets bigger and bigger with the release of each new 'Queens' record. Demonstrating the dance all over the country, The Mahotella Queens (not to forget their 'King', Mahlathini Nkabinde) have become the idols of the young 'with it' crowd. Growing from original 'Jive Motella' many other fads and variations have recently hit the scene -- all of them introduced and demonstrated by The Queens and their King: Jive Mgqashiya (which is available on MO 33 and, incidentally, is named after the word meaning the Bantu traditional way of dancing), Jive Jibav (on MO 50) and most recently a wild, crazy jive called 'S' modern. The charm, vivacity and ultra-modern, go-ahead spirit of these vital young artists fully deserves to have captivated the country. Ever since they started, back in Johannesburg in 1963, their fame has been growing by leaps and bounds. Today they have no equal in their field. But although they are the ones who glory in all the limelight, they owe on enormous debt to the 'man behind the scenes'. He is the 'brain' who guided, formed and trained the group -- Rupert 'Bops' Bopape."

ROACH, MAX We Insist! Max Roach's Freedom Now Suite LP
Wax Love present a reissue of Max Roach's We Insist!, originally released in 1960. Roach's 1960 masterwork We Insist! is a suite based on the Civil Rights Movement, and involves variations on the theme of the struggle for African Americans to achieve equality in the United States, a struggle that is still all too relevant. Roach began composing with lyricist Oscar Brown Jr. in 1959, with the initial intention of having the suite performed in 1963, on the 100th anniversary of The Emancipation Proclamation. Featuring the wonderful Abbey Lincoln on vocals, as well as Booker Little, Julian Priester, Coleman Hawkins, Olatunji, and more, We Insist! is a truly stunning album, one that knows no equal from that time or since.

DAVIS, MILES Conception LP
Following the 1949 and 1950 recordings compiled on Birth Of The Cool (1957), which created the sub-genre of cool jazz, Miles Davis had already moved onto the next thing, because that's what an innovator does. By 1951 he was recording hard bop of the highest order on a variety of formats, including 10" and 7". This LP compiles a number of those recordings, and the fact that the entire record was recorded on one day, October 5, 1951, would be surprising if it weren't the one and only Miles Davis. Featuring Art Blakey, Sonny Rollins, Walter Bishop, Jr., Tommy Potter, and Jackie McLean in his very first recording session, this is classic '50s Miles Davis.

MONK, THELONIOUS The Unique Thelonious Monk LP
Wax Love present a reissue of the seven-song The Unique Thelonious Monk, originally released in 1956. The release was the pianist's second during his remarkable five-year tenure on Riverside. His debut for the label was the aptly titled Plays Duke Ellington (1955) and once again, on this disc, Thelonious Monk's song selection did not feature any original compositions. Rather, the well-chosen standards included exemplify and help further establish the pianist and bandleader within the context of familiar melodies at the head of a trio -- consisting of Oscar Pettiford (bass) and Art Blakey (drums). Regarding the personnel, while Pettiford had also accompanied Monk on the Ellington sides, Blakey replaces Kenny Clarke. The pairing of Monk and Blakey cannot be overstated. Immediately, evidence of their uncanny instrumental interaction is the rhythmic focal point of "Liza, All the Clouds'll Roll Away" as the two play musical cat-and-mouse. They cajole and wheedle atop Pettiford's undulating undercurrent as it sonically corals their skilled syncopation and otherwise inspired mile-a-minute interjections. This is starkly contrast to the haunting, lyrical piano solo on "Memories Of You". Monk infuses the piece with such profound ingenuity and integrity that his re-evaluation and innovative arrangement are singularly and undeniably his own.

DAVIS, MILES Monterey Jazz Festival 1963 LP
Recorded September 20, 1963, at the Monterey Jazz Festival, this set featured Miles Davis's new quintet, with George Coleman, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams. This group, minus Coleman and with the addition of Wayne Shorter, would soon go on to make some of the most highly regarded jazz LPs of all time. This smoking set features a wonderful rendition of "So What", among others. Essential live jazz classic.

AHBEZ, EDEN Eden's Island: The Music Of An Enchanted Isle LP
Wax Love present a reissue of Eden Ahbez's Eden's Island, originally released in 1960. It is 1960, rock n' roll has just lost a couple of its protagonists during this and the previous year, the time of the great balladeers has just begun but soon will run out due to the new and exciting beat invasion. In US mainstream the tiki culture has reached a certain peak and is about to collapse but still goes strong and with it comes the so-called "exotica" music, a crossover between smooth jazz and swing, Latin grooves, haunting melodies that are rooted in the folkloristic sounds from different parts of this world plus weird sound effects that often create a spooky jungle or dreamy island beach atmosphere. It can even bend your mind that far you would see palm trees growing out of your speakers and witness monkeys and parrots having fun in your room. Eden Ahbez, born in 1908, passed in 1995, a man living an even more consistent dropout and hippie lifestyle way before the movement was born in the mid-60s, a beat poet and composer who wrote the hit tune "Nature Boy" that gave Nat King Cole his first big success in 1947, approaches the field of exotica music from a different point of view creating an epic concept album about an utopian society living in peace and harmony on an island far away from the modern western world as we know it. And indeed, we find many trademarks of the prototypical exotica music beginning with this relaxed groove combining easy listening swing and Latin patterns, peaceful, dreamy and even transcendental vocal melodies, tinges of folk music from around the world including powerful dances and a whole color palette of mind expanding sounds giving the whole music an even greater depth and width. The latter being created entirely with real instruments such as Eden Ahbez's wood-flute. Some tunes are rather gentle and relaxed with the lyrics being narrated which adds much to the epic feel of the album. Since this is a really unique effort, it cannot really compare to any other musical piece of the genre but is definitely recommended to exotica aficionados who for example love Frank Hunter's White Goddess album from 1959. Psychedelic music before the term was even invented.

PIEZO Steady Can't Steady Can't Stay 12"
Piezo lands on Wisdom Teeth with a four-track EP of head-turning club bangers. Through recent releases on Idle Hands, StabUdown, Version, and his own label, Ansia, Piezo has been developing a sound that marries dancefloor heft and precision sound design with qualities more rarely found in dance music: fun, humor, eccentricity. His music is functional yet full of quirks, aligning him with fellow club curveballers like Joe, Untold, and Pangaea. Steady Can't Steady Can't Stay is the producer's most accomplished and varied body of work to date, spanning humid, loopy house ("Waco"), melodic crystalline half-step ("A Touch Of"), cartoony UK techno ("Steady Can't Steady"), and pillowy down-tempo ("Ambra").
