PALE BLUE The Past We Leave Behind CD
2015 release. Mike Simonetti split from Italians Do It Better to focus on his new project, Pale Blue, as well as his new venture: the freshly minted label 2MR (Two Mikes Records). A collaboration between Simonetti and Captured Tracks, 2MR is an opportunity for Simonetti to start from a blank slate and release music he believes in. The first release on 2MR was The Past We Leave Behind, the debut album from Pale Blue. During the writing process of Capricorn Rising (2011), Simonetti was asked to remix tracks from the West Coast twosome Silver Hands. Immediately taken by the incredible range of lead-vocalist Elizabeth Wight, he reached out to collaborate. The result of the bi-coastal email exchange would eventually become Pale Blue. Pale Blue, referencing the term "Pale Blue Dot" coined by Carl Sagan to refer to a photograph of planet Earth taken by the Voyager 1 space probe in 1990, was originally conceived around the time that Hurricane Sandy hit New York and came to completion with Simonetti's severance from Italians Do It Better. Thus, many of the tracks that make up The Past grapple with themes of loss and new beginnings. The Past encompasses a myriad of sonic elements, ranging from rhythmic, melodic techno to atmospheric ambient productions, while also incorporating Simonetti's varied background in noise, drone, and even experimental dream pop. Above it all though, Wight's vocals remain the focal point, saturating the record with a lush melodic warmth that's so often missing in the electronic world. Musically, Pale Blue is a response to modern dance music and its constant fluctuations. It intentionally bears no obvious singles, nor club hits. While Simonetti, Wight and Jana Hunter (vocals on "Dusk In Parts") remain at its core, Pale Blue's philosophy is to keep everything open to collaboration. It does not aim to pigeonhole itself into a genre or any new vistas in music, but instead to a unifying sound produced collectively and harmoniously.

BOTTIN I Have What I Gave LP
LP version. 2017 release. On I Have What I Gave, Italian musician Bottin outdoes himself. He crafts propulsive, disco-laden scores for films not yet made, and introspective, mind-expanding cuts designed to ensure that people who want to dance never get caught up in conventional experiences. There's the hypnotic, pop-disco cut "Y-A-M-L" featuring past collaborator Lavinia Claws on vocals. It existed in parts for a decade before coming together during the sessions for this album. It's an energetic and transcendent affair. "L'Amore" has a foundation that recalls the cascading minimalism of Steve Reich and the cinematic work of the likes of Howard Shore. By the time the beat comes in, it's pretty clear this is no mere exercise in routine nu-disco. Another cut that proves Bottin should be scoring films is "Varosha" with its dark, arena-sized John Carpenter vibes that traffic in dystopia to balance out the bubbling optimism of "L'Amore". The record's quest extends back in time on "Perfect Mind", featuring words from the ancient Greek prayer, "The Thunder, Perfect Mind" found amid the famous Nag Hammadi texts in Egypt in 1945. Over a pulsating, acidy backdrop the words are delivered through various vocal synthesis engines, evoking a cold, artificially intelligent singularity discussing the most human of matters. All throughout an album filled with intricate and nuanced arrangements, Bottin doesn't forget to keep people moving. There's "Stellar Parade" another in a line of great collaborations with legendary Italian electronic musician Alexander Robotnick. There's also "Twenty-Three" an organic-sounding arp bath that perfectly channels the tension that builds over the course of a night. Bottin's work as one-half of experimental synth outfit Deardrums rubs off on "Microdisco" which is fat with pulsating analogue synths and resonant beat experimentations. One thing that sets I Have What I Gave apart from his pioneering horror disco and much-loved Punica Fides LPs is that this time around Bottin didn't see to it to create a concept-album structure. Everything came at once during the writing and recording process, which no doubt gives the album its intensity and sense of immediacy.

MUSICA ELETTRONICA VIVA United Patchwork 2LP
Alternative Fox present a reissue of Musica Elettronica Viva's United Patchwork, originally released in 1978. One of the most mythical experimental groups of all time, Musica Elettronica Viva was formed in 1966 by a group of American composers in Rome, its nucleus comprised of pianist Frederic Rzewski, sound improviser Alvin Curran, and the improvisatory keyboardist Richard Teitelbaum. Taking cues from John Cage and David Tudor, MEV employed open, limitless structures, using found instruments, toys, a homemade synthesizer, and the first Moog to reach mainland Europe. Improv and critical listening practices aimed to liberate listeners from the constraints of bourgeois capitalism and as their sound evolved, forms of Jewish mysticism and surrealist automaticism pointed to transcendent potential. An abortive US tour in 1970 split MEV into three units, but the Kabbalistic Dixieland band later reformed with Rzewski, Curran, and Teitelbaum joined by saxophonist Steve Lacy, trombonist Garrett List, and keyboardist Karl Berger. The resultant double album United Patchwork, recorded in November 1977 at Mama Dog for Horo Records, captures MEV in all of their discordant, improvisatory glory, from Teitelbaum's side-long opener, "Via Della Luce", to the honking noise of Lacy's "Fox", the excessive keyboard meanderings of Curran's "Psalm", Berger's vibraphone folly, "Cross Over One" and Rzewski's ponderous "What Is Freedom".

LABORATORIO DELLA QUERCIA Laboratorio Della Quercia 2LP
Alternative Fox present a reissue of Laboratorio Della Quercia's self-titled released, originally released in 1979. In the summer of 1978, an ambitious twelve-day experimental jazz project was undertaken at the ancient amphitheater, Tasso della Quercia, on the slopes of Rome's Gianicolo Hill. The idea was to assemble the leading players from Italy's avant-garde jazz scene, revolving around members of Grande Elenco Musicisti (or GEM), such as saxophonists Tommaso Vittorini, Eugenio Colombo, and Maurizio Giammarco, trumpeter Alberto Corvini and trombonist/composer Danilo Terenzi, together with visiting American players such as saxophonists Steve Lacy, Steve Potts, and Evan Parker, trombonist Roswell Rudd, pianist Frederick Rzewski, and drummer Noel McGhee, among others. Different group configurations were enacted each day and the final gala concert formed the basis of this super rare and highly playful double album, which captures the delightfully messy proceedings. In keeping with the openness of the Roman jazz scene of the day, the project sought to push the boundaries, aiming to break big-band traditions whilst still emphasizing the collective nature of the experience. Enrico Rava's opening "Tromblues" emphasizes the disparate approaches of these trans-Atlantic teams and Terenzi's "Dialogando" uses dual trombones to heighten musical discord; in mutated big-band mode, Giammarco's thrillingly complex "Vortex Waltz", and Vittorini's "La Legge E Uguale Per Tutti" both speak to the limitless potential that the project was aiming for.

HYMAN/MARY MAYO, DICK Moon Gas LP
Alternative Fox preset a reissue of Dick Hyman and Mary Mayo's Moon Gas, originally released in 1963. Adventurous keyboardist and arranger Dick Hyman worked in radio, film, and television before making a name for himself as a jazz pianist in the mid-1950s with a hugely popular harpsichord rendition of "Mack The Knife". An early experimenter with electronic instruments, including the Moog, his 1963 rarity Moon Gas, produced by Creed Taylor and recorded with Sinatra sidekick and Broadway musical mainstay Mary Mayo, was conceived as "a glimpse of the possible sounds of the 22nd Century". Blasting lounge music and love ballads into the nether regions of outer space, Moon Gas pitted Hyman's organ, mini-organ, and piano riffs against Mayo's ethereal voice -- sometimes singing wordlessly, other times with actual lyrics -- atop a tight studio ensemble, the sounds made more otherworldly through the use of an ondioline, a martinot, oscillators, and Vinnie Bell's customized guitar, which allowed for individualized sound effects. Although improvised opener "Moon Gas" sounds pleasantly jazzy, "Maid Of The Moon" and "Space Reflex" reach the cosmos and there's a one-off rendition of João Gilberto's "Desafinado" too, delivered with skill in Portuguese.

COLTRANE, ALICE Africa, Live At The Carnegie Hall 1971 LP
The musician and spiritual seeker Alice Coltrane was much more than just John Coltrane's second wife. One of the few harpists to feature prominently in jazz, she was also a renowned pianist and composer and her interest in spiritual matters greatly helped steer her husband deeper into Krishna consciousness, which had significant bearing on his music, most notably evident on A Love Supreme (1965). This mesmerizing performance, held at Carnegie Hall four years after John's untimely passing as part of a benefit event for Swami Satchidananda's Integral Yoga Institute, comprised a stunning and largely improvised rendition of Coltrane's "Africa," with Alice's subtle piano and harp expressions excellently framed by the wailing saxes of Pharaoh Sanders and Archie Shepp, Cecil McBee and Jimmy Garrison trading non-standard bass lines, a dual drum onslaught from Clifford Jarvis and Ed Blackwell, along with members of the Institute on harmonium and tamboura.

FAHEY, JOHN Live In Sausalito, September 9, 1973 LP
The finger-picking guitarist and blues enthusiast John Fahey enjoyed a long, influential and distinguished career. Born in Washington DC in 1939 and raised in Takoma Park, Maryland, he launched his own Takoma label to issue self-produced work in the late 1950s and then delivered his master's theses on the blues of Charlie Patton at UCLA. Then, while based in the radical town of Berkeley, California in the San Francisco Bay area, began issuing filed recordings of forgotten blues legends, such as Bukka White. With his own work, Fahey began borrowing from eastern elements such as Indonesian gamelan and Tibetan vocal chanting, reflecting his interest in esoteric eastern religion, as well as birdsong, animal calls, and other naturalistic elements. This beautiful 1973 performance, delivered in the sleepy town of Sausalito, California, comprises most of Fahey's Fare Forward Voyagers LP (1973), as well as earlier material, including "Dance Of The Inhabitants Of The Palace Of King Philip XIV Of Spain", from his 1964 release, Death Chants, Breakdowns and Military Waltzes.

MILLSART Every Dog Has Its Day Vol. 5 2LP
In 2020, Jeff Mills is inviting his listeners to look inward in the form of his Every Dog Has Its Day series. The last time an installment came out was 17 years ago, just enough time for a periodical cicada to emerge from the ground, finished with its former life as a nymph. The series itself has acted as a barometer of the times, and Mills feels, after a long layoff, it's time to rehash his Millsart persona and gauge the here and now, and where it fits in. The record itself will be the fifth chapter. It's donned in a specific color, taking heed from its predecessors. The first four were gold, silver, pearl, and sky blue. Now it's time for red: the first of the series to be a primary color, it was chosen for its connotation. Red, being very emotive, stirs different feelings in us all; lust, love, rage, power, energy, desire, passion. This music is a tool for us to see the world as is, and be able to reflect inwards to see what we are. It's not your stereotypical electronic dance track or DJ tool. Each of the eight cuts has a story behind it and invites the listener to get lost in it and curate their opinions about it or themselves. Stripped and left in a way for true music listeners, those with unconditional love and appreciation for a master at their craft. Mills himself has said, "You never figure out life, you just get used to it." Reflected in this record is that sentiment, that life doesn't present to you the answers because there are none. What is right and just for you, may not be for me, so how can I share with you any secrets. Electronic music can act as a guide, a catalyst of your headspace; it is not the map. The sixth edition of this series is soon to follow in spring dressed in brown, continuing to deliver a spiritual and emotional raft for you to see that Every Dog Has Its Day.

VASSILIU, PIERRE Pierre Vassiliu en Voyages CD
Voyage, to Pierre Vassiliu, was not only the title of an album of his, but also a philosophy of life. Traveling the world nourished his work, and his career allowed him to set foot on every continent. But his most beautiful travels took place in recording studios. A traveler out of obligation in his youth (Algeria and its war), he became a traveler by taste and acquired an interest in people. Rio de Janeiro, 1968-1974: Eddie Barclay invited the trio Camara and its singer Tita Lobo to cut a record in Paris. They became the trend of the moment in St Germain des Prés; Pierre Barouh offered them to release an instrumental LP on his label Saravah, that would be recorded at Davout studio by Yves Chamberland, who in turn offered the trio to create the first French-language bossa nova album. A team of singers and writers and it included Pierre Vassiliu. 1975-1978: His first effort after the staggering success of Qui c'est celui-là? (1973), Voyage, came out in 1975, punctuated by the jolts of a train zigzagging between mainstream pop, Latin rhythms, and Herbie Hancock's Headhunters-inspired jazz-funk. 1979-1980: Another label was awaiting him: RCA. This rebirth marked the beginning of Vassiliu's African period. Pierre seemed depressed in 1979. His trips to Guadeloupe with Laura softened him and inspired many songs. 1981-1982: Pierre's former press agent Brigitte Berthelot remembers him being sickened by the trade. Despite money problems, he would create moments of celebration around him, and fantastic tours. 1983-2003: Fired by RCA, Pierre multiplied trips to Africa, and you could hear it in his new record Roulé Boulé (1983). After a single album for CBS, he was dismissed again. Then a family tragedy followed. This was the beginning of a period of very long breaks in Senegal. Of a longing for tenderness in the sun. Love was born again, Lena was born as well; the Vassilius took over a music bar in Dakar and Pierre began writing down what would become L'amour qui passe (1987). It included Vassiliu's only Afro-beat song: "Ça va ça va", with Fela's sidekick Tony Allen on drums. By the beginning of the 2000s, Pierre's recording career seemed to be at a standstill. A handful of fans from his town of Mèze allowed a final album to be funded: Pierre Précieuses (2003). Liner notes in French and English by Guido (from Acid Arab). CD version includes 24-page booklet.

PLEASURE PRINCIPLE Pleasure Principle CD
Paul Speedy Ramon on the record: "... Even though I was and still am extremely involved in my past and present bands (Skategang, La Secte du Futur, Marietta to a lesser extent), the music we were making was only partially representative of me. I've always listened to a lot of reggae, dancehall, music from Ghana, Nigeria, Congo, and overall music that is based more on repetition and intention than composition . . . In 2015 my brother and friend Benjamin Dupont, the human behind Bryan's Magic Tears, moved into my flat share, Noah's Ark at 35 rue Clignancourt, in the 18th arrondissement, and it was him who unlocked everything by showing me how to record music by myself . . . Recording a lot, without any constraints of format, group or expectations, by letting myself be totally carried away by what was coming out in the moment, it allowed me to give myself a certain insight into myself . . . I would say that it oscillates, for the music, between synthetic krautrock, dancehall lo-fi, Manchester sound recorded with toys, rock à la Velvet and Memphis rap for children; and between Les Négresses Vertes and Julien Gracq for the texts . . . My friend Paula from J.C. Satan and Succhiamo, who sings on 'Mariposa' and 'Venera 16', because I had no idea what to do about it; I sent her the songs and she sang on her phone, it was great so we recorded it. This first album is a kind of best-of from 2015 to 2018, the songs that held up best, the ones I had lyrics on, the best finished drafts, basically. I owe its existence to my friends at the Megattera micro-label who, after hearing my songs at home at night, decided to release them confidentially on tape first; without them, they would still be on my hard drive. Under the spell, Born Bad Records then entrusted Olivier Demeaux (Cheveu, Heimat) with the mission of mixing the 'best' tracks to give them the luster they deserve and make these few crazy and scattered tracks a full-fledged album. I asked Adam Karakos from Villejuif Underground, Guillaume Rottier from Rendez-Vous, Nikolaj Boursniev from Quetzal Snakes, and Milia Colombani who plays in half the bands in Paris, to play live with me. Pleasure Principle is located somewhere within a triangle formed by Francis Bebey, Add (n) To X, and Ludwig Von 88..."

FRUSTRATION So Cold Streams CD
During the 1990s, wherever you lived in France, there was a handful of bands you could see five or ten times a year. In the most remote and rural places of the country, they inspired tons of kids to start their own band or fanzine, to go for something different. It was more than just music. It was a spirit, an idea. And in the last ten years, in France, no one encapsulated them better than Frustration. Somewhere in most remote and rural places of the country, some kids still need to look at the world with a different perspective. But still, no one was expecting a record such as So Cold Streams. At this stage, Frustration could have easily played it safe releasing a record basically identical to the previous one, intense, abrasive, honest but with no risk. They could have continued to fill the venues with no complaints. But right from the very first seconds of "Insane", a humungous electro-punk monster that wouldn't have been out of place on a 1988 EBM EP, you realize that things aren't gonna go as planned. Instead of setting up a comfortable routine, Frustration recorded its fifth album as if it were the first, like a bunch of guys who've been playing together for six months, who have nothing to lose and a ferocious will to bite. Of course, the post-punk shenanigans are still there (martial drums, elastic bass, hit-and-run guitars), but So Cold Streams is full of a brand-new energy, raucous lyrics, and full-on audacity. Listen to "Brume", an industrial nightmare with lyrics screamed in French. Or the poppy and intimate "Lil' White Sister" which sounds surprisingly like the Smiths or Echo & The Bunnymen. Or the insane "Slave Markets" on which the band invited Jason Williamson, half of Sleaford Mods -- a band that was pivotal in Frustration's new found youth. "Sleaford Mods is a band that, musically and humanly, gave us a real boost," explains Fabrice Gilbert (vocals). "They gave us a real sense of freedom, it allowed me to really say everything I wanted to say in my lyrics, to talk about extremely intimate subjects as well as much more general things, whether it be political or social."

GASC, JULIEN L'Appel de la Foret CD
Confession, fiction, and observation. This is how the trajectory drawn by Julien Gasc seems to evolve from one album to the next. While Cerf, Biche et Faon (BORNBAD 060LP, 2013) took the form of a diary and Kiss Me, You Fool! (BORNBAD 088CD/LP, 2016) that of a collection of stories, L'Appel de la Forêt concludes this trilogy in a tender and spontaneous dialogue, broaching the present with clairvoyance through melodies with bright glimmers. More adventurous than its predecessors, which respectively took root in the south of France and in London, this third chapter offers a kaleidoscopic vision, multiplying geographies and temporalities to ingrain itself in the moment all the better. Through a collection of dances of diverse origins, Julien places himself at the heart of the everyday -- embracing it, sublimating it, and calling for a transfiguration to escape its imminent disaster. His voice circulates through this fragmented horizon; it is raw and immediate, sometimes so stark that it disappears, making way for its interlocutor, like an invitation to occupy the space shaped by his ritornello. Emancipated from his dandy's costume, the rare moments where he puts it on again are to more effectively elude it. The address is deliberately frank and above all benevolent. Beyond an amorous chant d'amour, it is an ode to freedom and to the full awareness of our human condition that unfolds before us. An invitation, devoid of cynicism, to take off of our "social animal" mask and decolonize the world around us -- to stop wanting to possess at all costs and let those we love be free. This album is a roadside companion, with no dogma or precepts, and a simple motto: Stay joyful. CD version includes 12-page booklet.

SHARPE, SUNIL Etaci 12"
Etaci is the banging debut EP of Irish techno DJ and producer Sunil Sharpe on Bpitch Control. The first release on Ellen Allien's BPitch label in 2020 comes from Sunil Sharpe, an outstanding Irish DJ and producer known since the early '00s for his raw, individualistic techno. After records on Works The Long Night, Murder, and his own label On The Hoof, Etaci is the Irishman's first solo release in three years. The title track sets the tone with its powerful beats and memorable gnawing sequences: funky, extremely physical and with its "Just A Dream" vocal, which lays like a veil over a squeaky Acid screw, psychedelic to the right degree. "Timber" picks up on this theme and marches with whispering acid lines, voices from the haunted house and funky Chicago house reminisces in the direction of a break, in which a bewitched melody, bird chirping, and choirs push the whole thing in the direction of ritual dance cult music. Sunil Sharpe then modulates sinister sequences on "Amun", where synth stabs occasionally shoot light into the darkness -- for the special moments on the dancefloor, which are ecstatic and self-contained at the same time. "Ukkin" finally sends Morse codes from the '90s Chicago basements, extremely funky and compelling contemporary.

DEUX BALEINES BLANCHES Singende Drahte CD
Sammlung (BB 236CD/LP, 2017) compiled by Stefan Schneider first introduced a selection of previously little-known exponents of 1980s Duesseldorf electronic tape music. A further remarkable example of the Duesseldorf underground tape output, 1986's Singende Drahte originally circulated in a minuscule edition among aficionados only is now finally available as a CD and vinyl re-edition. Deux Baleines Blanches was the name of Stefan Schneider's avant-pop-project who concurrently with his studies of photography at Duesseldorf's Kunstakademie had begun his musical explorations in the early 1980s, which also led him to cofound the bands Kreidler (1994) and To Rococo Rot (1995). Singende Drahte showcases some of his early work in the field. The somewhat sketchy and abstract character of these 14 tracks, "Draehte" (wires) is slightly reminiscent of the esthetics of contemporary labels like Les Disques du Crépuscule or early 4AD, yet they sound surprisingly modern even 30 years after they were first released."The music on this album has originally been recorded in an attempt to recreate an electric drone emanating from an overhead electric power line which I had noticed by chance on a humid day in May 1986 whilst on a bicycle tour across the rural outskirts of Düsseldorf. The surprising discovery of this static yet tender hum which filled the air was a completely overwhelming listening experience . . . The very next day I borrowed a recording device from a friend (it was a Sony Walkman if memory serves) and went back to the same spot right underneath the huge wires of the power line, eagerly anticipating the chance to record this particular hum, my future favorite album onto cassette tape. Yet weirdly, on this day the hum was nowhere to be heard . . . Back at home I took my guitar and my amp and tried to imitate what I could not record in the field. The more effort I put into these attempts the worse it got, however I was convinced . . . A couple of weeks later, however, I listened back to these sketches and was surprised that there was something quite uniquely intriguing within these recorded fragments. You simply had to disregard the original intention -- to imitate the sound of an electric hum. I chose to liberate myself from the constraints of the experiment and subsequently recorded my sketches on a 4-track cassette. The nished cassette was released in November 1986 in an edition of maybe 15 copies." --Stefan Schneider, October 2019

ALLENDES & FELIPE VENEGAS, FRANCISCO LLovizna (10th Anniversary) 12"
The marvelous Chilean blooded Llovizna, produced by the talented Felipe Venegas and Francisco Allendes was originally released in 2009 on Cadenza. The label celebrates the 10th anniversary of its publication with a crisp remix by the mighty Luciano and a rework hot off the press by its original writers. Furthermore, there will be another heavyweight remixer, a big surprise and an appreciated comeback: Loco Dice needs no introduction, and his remix of this Cadenza classic will leave you speechless. A magnificent bond of the original Latin vibes and astonishing peak-time sound manipulation with a relentless pace. "Llovizna" is a track with an indissoluble bound with Cadenza's South America roots, a bound perpetually fortified by the origin of many of the artists involved with the label, and by the choice to host amazing massive events in Chile and in the rest of the continent. A funky bass line and full-bodied reverberating jazz drums make out Luciano's bubbly and shiny remix. The cutting-edge climactic sequencing of its synthesizers and the seasoned use of percussive breaks and fills exalt the emotional interlude of the folkloric female Latin chant, just before a fully-fledged dancefloor-oriented restart. The rework delivered by Felipe and Francisco starts off banging with a resolved bass drum, rattling shakers and fierce hi-hats. Subtle melodies slowly raise from its minimalistic framework revealing in advance all the sweetness of its Andean singing. A majestic rework, which resonates far beyond from a DJ tool aftertaste.

The much-loved fragile female vocals, searing electric guitar licks, 'cello, mandolin, and bass remain from the '70s sound; now supplemented with accordion, drum kit, trombone, and whistle. 32 years on from their eponymous album Caedmon, the content of the songs is personal, poignant, and sometimes challenging, Acoustic acid folk, mixed, in well-judged doses, with jazz, soul, African and gospel groove.

VA Dots & Pearls 6 2x12"
Cocoon Recordings invites well-known international artists to once again rub shoulders with some of the freshest new talents around on Dots & Pearls 6. First up, Eduardo de la Calle and Romina Cohn's "I'm Losing My Mind" does a decent job helping you lose yours. Taking the classic DBX template as a start point, Cohn's random, spaced-out musings elevate things to another level as they filter through all manner of machinery, bathing the hypnotic percussion in a lysergic glow. Fabe's "Call Of Origin" pulls no punches either, the energetic, bass driven intro bouncing its way centerstage before expanding into lush open spaces with occasional melodic scatters and washes of warm pads that radiate good vibes. Over the last couple of years, Adana Twins have rightly consolidated their position at the top table, so it's a pleasure to have them on board with "Origo". Like snake charmers relentlessly teasing and twisting the infectious hook line in all manner of directions, they demonstrate complete control of their art, pushing all the right buttons to bring things nicely to the boil. As with all Cocoon compilations the deeper you dive, the stranger the vibe and Juan Sanchez delivers a dose of trance-inducing, minimal techno. Abiding by the same dogma as the track before, "Narcissus" offsets a constantly morphing hypnotic hook line with raw, stripped 909 beats in a classic mid '90s style. Michael Klein's "Continuation" maintains the intensity as Cocoon's Techno Tardis transports the listener even further back to a sweaty early '90s warehouse. It could be London, it could be Berlin... wherever it is, but it sure sounds like home. Rico Puestel then snuffs out the candle, plunging you back into darkness. With "Perpetua Mobilia" he unleashes a deep, prowling beast of a track. As you motor on towards morning, Radu Dracul adds some bite to proceedings with "Spectrae", a slow-burning psychedelic trip with gently percolating acid lines that smooth out the rough textures of the preceding tracks before giving way to a cavernous breakbeat inflected breakdown. And then finally, Joe Metzenmacher and Borka & The Gang close out the collection, paying homage to the melodic side of Detroit with the quirky, idiosyncratic yet ultimately beautiful "Magic Talk". It surrounds the dancefloor in a warm embrace as keys, strings, and bass combine effortlessly to produce a priceless moment of collective euphoria.

BREUKER & HAN BENNINK, WILLEM New Acoustic Swing Duo 2CD
Restocked. Corbett Vs. Dempsey present a reissue of Willem Breuker and Han Bennink's New Acoustic Swing Duo, originally released in 1967. Late in 1967, saxophonist Willem Breuker and drummer Han Bennink recorded the first LP for the new artist-run free improvised music label, ICP Records. New Acoustic Swing Duo was an instant classic, and remains one of the most enduring documents of Dutch improvised music ever recorded. With Breuker's omnidirectional reed work, which ranges from plaintive to excoriating, occasional sneering tone adds a kind of ironic twist to the expressive outpouring. He could be as explosive as Peter Brötzmann, but Breuker has a razor-sharp wit and sense of humor. Since this recording, Bennink has gone on to be seated among the royalty of jazz and improvised music drummers. At the time, he was a fresh-faced 25-year-old, hauling around increasingly immense kits with heaps of percussion flotsam and jetsam, playing tabla and vibrapan, and sparking it all with tsunami energy. Keep in mind, Coltrane and Ali had just recorded Interstellar Space (which would not be issued until 1974), and the economical drum/sax lineup was by no means yet a standard in improvised music. Shortly after recording this, Breuker and Bennink would join Brötzmann to record Machine Gun (1968), another European free music keystone. Somehow, despite its historical importance and aesthetic magnificence, New Acoustic Swing Duo has never been available as a stand-alone CD. Remastered from original tapes, this reissue includes the original cover with the "ICP 001" hand-stamp, as well as several versions of the handmade covers designed by Bennink, drawn from Mats Gustafsson's wonderful collection. Finally, as a special bonus, the two-disc package includes a legendary concert by Breuker and Bennink, recorded in Essen, Germany, in 1968, released here for the first time.

ALIEN NOSEJOB Suddenly Everything Is Twice As Loud LP
"You'd think Jake Robertson would already have his hands full playing in the likes of Ausmuteants, Leather Towel, School Damage, Drug Sweat, et al. But no, evidently there's always time for one more thoroughly wracked project, and Alien Nosejob's focus is as kaleidoscopically scattershot as you'd expect from a man with such a short attention span. Just to confirm: yes, that's a good thing. From the off, we glide through the Coneheads-style Devocore of 'Television Sets' before romping through the jangling lo-fi pop of 'Weight Of The World', which skips and mopes while making like The Clean setting light to their parents' carpet with a magnifying glass. There's also charmingly scruffy soul-pop, chugging sci-fi slop-punk, straight-up college rock balladry and much, much more. But these aren't sketches or tossed-off genre exercises. They're bona fide works of consummate skill that resonate sincerely and effortlessly. Essentially, each song sounds like a challenge to the one that follows, a cry of 'step the fuck up'; Suddenly Everything Is Twice As Loud is a treasure trove of mini-masterpieces. Rough as fuck mini-masterpieces, sure, recorded with a cheap drum machine and guitars that sound like rusty drills cutting through power cables, but mini-masterpieces nonetheless. When venerable doyens of the pop establishment make albums of such eclectic scope and genuine songwriting talent, they get called geniuses. When punk-as-fuck wiseguys like Robertson pull it off, words like 'maverick' get tossed around. Rest assured, his Alien Nosejob project covers both angles. This second album is an instant classic that deserves to be heard far beyond the underground -- but if it isn't, who cares? He's probably playing in another seven bands already by the time you read this. I've not heard them yet either, but I can tell you they're all fucking amazing. Just buy this record and join the cult." --Will Fitzpatrick

DARK THOUGHTS Must Be Nice LP
"'You only get worse,' goes the first line on Dark Thoughts' third album, but while they might be correct about your personal decline, this West Philly trio are quite evidently better than ever. Hot on the heels of 2018's At Work LP -- 18 months later, to be precise -- this new collection sees the band at their willfully-dumb-but-smarter-than-u best, knocking out Ramonescore nuggets of the purest gold as if their lives depended on it. Whether imploring you to 'listen to the radio' or simply 'please don't leave me alone', Jim Shomo's voice remains the perfect balance of snot-drenched sneer and wounded croon, while the band lock into their fast'n'furious groove to frame his lovelorn melodies with the correct amount of muscle, and maybe they'll even pour a few beers directly into their amps while they're at it. Sure, they retain the sound that powered those first two albums, but they know what they're doing -- if it ain't broke, don't fix it; if you're broke, write a 90-second punk banger about it with an irresistible melody and play it as loud as possible. As if to prove that fact, synth-splashed closer 'Must Be Nice' shows they might even have written their best cut yet. Getting back to that first song, 'Hesitate', Shomo goes on to say: 'I've seen the future / It looks so much brighter than it used to.' On the basis of Must Be Nice, it's difficult to argue with that assessment: this is the perfect synthesis of pop and punk and a welcome reminder that your '70s heroes just wanted to recreate the unforgettable 45s they heard on the radio as kids. The 12 songs here may be destined for your turntable rather than the wireless, but you'll treasure 'em every bit as much. Another classic from a band that just doesn't know how to stop writing 'em -- Dark Thoughts forever." --Will Fitzpatrick

DADAWAH Peace And Love LP
LP version; 2020 repress. Dark, hypnotic, tripping nyabinghi from 1974. Led by Jamaican Rastafarian singing hand-drummer Ras Michael over four extended excursions, the music is organic, sublime and expansive, grounation drums and bass-heavy (with no rhythm guitar; rather, Willie Lindo brilliantly improvising a kind of dazed blues). Lloyd Charmers and Federal Studios engineer George Raymond stayed up all night after the session to mix the recording, opening out the enraptured mood into echoing space, adding sparse, startling effects to the keyboards. At no cost to its deep spirituality, this is the closest reggae comes to psychedelia. Previously squandered in an incongruous 2-for-1 reissue, now lovingly returned to its original, singular glory at Abbey Road. Pressed on super-fly vinyl and housed in new standard-printed sleeves.

ST. WERNER, JAN Molocular Meditation LP
Molocular Meditation is a bespoke light and sound environment featuring the voice of the Fall's Mark E Smith. Smith is heard making observations on mundane objects, events, and a range of meditation techniques basically associating his discontent with an apolitical British upper class. His voice forms the narrative component of an electroacoustic composition by Jan St. Werner placed in a hyper-real scenario evoking a state of transformation and deceleration. "Molocular Meditation" premiered at Cornerhouse, Manchester in 2014. This album presents a re-edited and remastered stereo version of the original multi-channel piece. Voice and guitar feedback were recorded at Blueprint Studios Manchester, electronics in Werner's studio in Berlin. The B-side consists of unreleased new work partly written around the same time as Molocular Meditation in context of Werner's Fiepblatter Catalogue on Thrill Jockey. "Back To Animals" is a non-metric rhythmic exercise frantically hybridizing percussive accents with synthesized pulse. "On The Infinite Of Universe And Worlds" is an electronic opera based on Giordano Bruno's Renaissance writings which Werner was asked to conceptualize for new music festival Music Nova in Finland. "VS Cancelled" finds Mark E. Smith reading an email from Domino Records explaining their discontinuation of the Von Sudenfed project a band Mark E. Smith had founded with Mouse on Mars' Jan St. Werner and Andi Toma in 2006. Their debut album Tromatic Reflexxions came on Domino out in 2007. Artwork by Rupert Smyth Studio. RADA Tropical Cosmic Sounds From Space 2LP
Angel Rada, pioneer of experimental electronic music in Venezuela, has always been a restless mind, an experimentalist with his feet firmly planted on the ground of the art, his particular mix of sound design, cultural avant-garde attitude, and spiritual inquiry led him to explore an impressively rich sound universe throughout his more than 20 productions (one of the most extensive in his country) making him the cult musician he is today. El Palmas Music, an independent record label in Barcelona, pays tribute to this visionary Venezuelan musician with Tropical Cosmic Sounds From Space, a double-LP compilation with 15 carefully selected tracks from Angel Rada's extraordinary first period, coveted by experimental and cult electronics collectors around the globe. The main focus of the compilation is between 1980 to 1989, the time when Rada released cosmic-tropical experimental jewels such as Upadesa (1983), Viveka (1984), Continuvm (1986), Armagedon & the Third Wave Revolution (1987), and Impressiones Etnosonicas (1988). Rada embraced psychedelia in his youth, his rock band named The Gas Light gave him the opportunity to experiment with electronic instruments, electric organs, and the autoharp. This impulse led him to get his career to the next level. While he was taking music studies in Germany, gets in direct contact with cosmic music and iconic artists such as Klaus Schulze. Back in Venezuela, at the beginning of the eighties, he establishes the foundation of his work and begin to be known as a reference, subverting the industry rules, not only from the point of view of sound and production but also because of his self-management. Although his direct influences: psychedelia, krautrock, and experimental electronic, were a starting point for his work during his studies in Germany between 1973 and 1978, Rada not only mastered the art of analog synthesizers, creating totally new sounds, but put his efforts on the search for an original sound landscape, rooted in its native homeland as in spiritual matters. His music was tagged in his time by his German colleagues as "Latin Cosmic Psikraut", a futuristic vision of the Caribbean Sea ahead of its time, full of innovative textures and amorphous envelopes with an almost narcotic effect. Unexpectedly, while rehearsing, one day in 1999, a natural tragedy would take his studio away, and all those valuable instruments that had accompanied him throughout his life were forever gone. Includes insert with notes and download with seven bonus tracks.

PAGAN, J. M. Kiu I Els Seus Amics LP
From the cosmic creative musical mind of Swiss/Catalan studio whizz, Zeleste Nightclub engineer, Video Nasty film composer, occasional Jaume Sisa (Música Dispersa) collaborator and future electronic music therapy pioneer comes the synth-ridden vocoder-loaded 1984 sci-funk soundtrack to Barcelona's daytime TV response to the universal E.T. phenomena. Get ready to meet your new alienígena amic and the unidentified flying object of thousands of Catalonian kids' affections through the 1980s as Finders Keepers present J. M. Pagan's lost lunar modular synth score to Kiu I Els Seus Amics (Kiu And Friends aka Kiu Is Your Friend). From the same intergalactic phenomenon that brought such delights as Turkey's exploito cash-in "Badi" or South Africa's lo-rent homage "Nukie", and the same craze which filled international airwaves with the likes of Extra T's electro smash single "E.T. Boogie" or the million selling Columbian "Cumbia De E.T. El Extraterrestre" smash hit. In 1982, the diaspora from Steven Spielberg's small fictional mid-American neighborhood that played host to everyone's favorite torch-fingered, three-toed, Skittle-scoffing space goblin touched virtually every family home in every major city resulting in one of the biggest cinematic merchandise phenomenas of the 21st century, resulting in an unexpected high-demand/short-supply play-off in which bootleggers, copyists, and counterfeiters rose to the challenge like never before. When Spielberg regrettably told interviewers that he had no intention of making a sequel to E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, it instantly became open-season for the imitators... but way before somebody squeezed-out, Mac & Me, ALF, and The Purple People Eater a team of kid's TV executives in Catalunya were ready to fill the widening gap in the market without haste. Created in 1983 by Luna Films and Televisió de Catalunya (TV3) and screened exclusively in Catalunya, Kiu I Els Seus Amics was one of the first E.T. "tributes" to make it out of the gate, and with a crew of five individual directors and writers to ensure that the five episode, one-off series hit the wave of phone-home-fever, Kiu has since remained a short but sweet micro-memory in the hearts of an entire generation of Catalonian cosmonauts. The bulk of this LP is made up of tracks taken from the rare full-length album which was released after the TV program had aired, coinciding with sales of jigsaws and rubberized play figures in an attempt to catch-up with the unexpected mega-success of the show. Needless to say, with a short promotional window, the LP (and cassette edition) did not benefit a repress and most copies were unfortunately sold to children.

RAPH, PIERRE Juenes Filles Impudiques 7"
This long-lost Parisian skin flick Jeunes Filles Impudiques (aka, Schoolgirl Hitchhikers) marks a particularly vulnerable period in the career of one of the most underrated and misunderstood directors to emerge from the rising smoke of the 1968 Parisian social explosion. From a director with early links with the Paris underground, the Letterists, the surrealists, improv theatre, and the free-press comes the reclaimed audio tracks from one of his rarest celluloid moments -- but let's not confuse this for high-art. Finders Keepers make no bones, this is Jean Rollin's maiden voyage into adult entertainment, Directed under the pseudonym of Miche Gentil with a flimsy plot, questionable acting skills and an awesome little schizophrenic soundtrack. The Brutus Drums percussion workout, the acidic folk pastoral movements, the Cul-De-Sac-esque jazz theme and the UK library sound-alike tile-tune all make up this five track veritable banquet of Gallic sleaze and second-class sound providing fans of cult cinema and b-music with an unexpected glimpse into the No-No generation at its most candid. The interests of good taste have ensured that this long-lost movie has been buried for some 40 odd years with a musical score bursting to jump out of the can and down your tone arm which has now been made possible by a recently renovated negative print and new source material. These original Pierre-Raph (of Requiem For A Vampire infamy) compositions from the publishing Library of Paris' Musicale Editions Dellamarre (of Acanthus/Unity fame) come straight from Rollin himself as an introduction to Finders Keepers' new Rollinade series documenting some of the finest musical moments of the director's career as an avant-gardener, counter-culture vulture and Gallic vamp-tramp all housed in their original hand-painted promotional artwork for the first time ever on vinyl.

BLACK RAINBOWS Pandaemonium (Green Fluo) LP
LP version. Limited edition green fluo vinyl. Black Rainbows are back two years from their last album, Stellar Prophecy (HPS 037CD/LP/LTD-LP, 2016) with a magnificent new full-length comprised of nine tracks for about 45 minutes of music. Pandaemonium has this mix of new wave of stoner-occult riffing a la Black Sabbath, but in a heavier way. Some of the songs remind of Fu Manchu but sound heavier than ever, and then you have one long doom-sludge-stoner suite ("Grindstone"), and a couple of lysergic, dreamy, heavy psych songs that will blow your mind. The album sounds killer and was recorded at Forward Studios, one of Italy's finest recording spaces. Produced by Gabriele Fiori and engineered by Fabio Sforza, with a special focus on the drums, handled for the first time in Black Rainbows by Filippo Ragazzoni. Bass riffing is solid and has a mellow sound, and the wall of fuzz from Fiori's guitars will drive you nuts. Artwork will be, for the third time for the band, from the visionary SoloMacello. This is the sixth studio album for the band, and by far the best one yet. It's the most solid and complete album they have ever recorded.

COLTRANE, ALICE Carnegie Hall '71 10"
Repressed. Alice Coltrane, live at Carnegie Hall, New York on February 21st, 1971. On Sunday, February 21st, 1971, a benefit was held in New York's Carnegie Hall for Swami Satchidanda's Integral Yoga Institute, featuring Laura Nyro, the New Rascals, and Alice Coltrane's All-Stars. The latter band was a remarkable coming-together of talent, with Lady Trane joined by legends such as Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, and Jimmy Garrison on stupendous form (with a little assistance from members of the Yoga Institute). The astounding performance of John Coltrane's "Africa" on this set, finds them improvising thrillingly. Includes the entire WQXR-FM broadcast, digitally remastered and accompanied by background notes and images. Also features: Kumar Kramer (harmonium), Jimmy Garrison (bass), Cecil McBee (bass), Clifford Jarvis (drums), and Ed Blackwell (drums). 10" record with insert.

COMPANY 1983 2LP
Wonderful, previously unreleased recordings by Derek Bailey and his guests at Company Week in 1983. What's remarkable throughout this album is the respect and affection the musicians show for each other, exemplifying the dictionary definition of "company" as "the fact or condition of being with another or others, especially in a way that provides friendship and enjoyment." It starts with "Landslide", a brilliant, spiky, spluttering, twanging reunion of Music Improvisation Company members Evan Parker (tenor sax), Hugh Davies (electronics), and Jamie Muir (percussion). Next up, "Seconde Choix", with Joëlle Léandre's close-miked prepared bass and Bailey's acoustic guitar seemingly heading in different directions before coming together miraculously in just four minutes. The opening of "First Choice", a duet between Bailey and Muir, is a revelation for those who moan that the guitarist plays too many notes. His patient and truly exquisite exploration of harmonics is beautifully counterpointed by Muir's metallic percussion. On "Pile Ou Face" (Heads Or Tails) Davies concentrates on his high register oscillators, carefully shadowed by Parker's soprano until Léandre's deft, springy pizzicato lures them into the playground. "JD In Paradise" is a surprisingly delicate wind quartet, with John Corbett's trumpet, fragile and Don Cherry-like, punctuating the sinuous interplay between Peter Brötzmann and J.D. Parran (on sopranos, flutes and clarinet), while trombonist Vinko Globokar growls approvingly in the background. Igor Stravinsky's magnificent definition of music as the jeu de notes comes to mind listening to Bailey's duet with cellist Ernst Reijseger (executing fiendish double-stopped harmonics with staggering ease). Technical virtuosity has never sounded so effortless -- it is, as its title "Een Plezierig Stukje" simply states, a fun piece. On the closing "La Horda", Bailey and Reijseger team up with the horns for what on paper looks like it could be rough and rowdy sextet but which turns out once more to be a thoughtful, spacious exchange of ideas, shapes, and colors.

Airchina is a weightless instrumental machine music, sometimes ghostly anthropomorphized with a hushed voice or a synthetic choir. Airchina is playful-melodious electronic music of and for today, which also takes its cue from global ambient and pop music from the end of the 1970s to the end of the 1980s. Airchina is a solo project by Nikolai Szymanski. LP 2 is his second release, his debut album LP 1 was released in summer 2018 on Italic.Nikolai Szymanski (born 1986, Düsseldorf) is an artist living and working in Cologne and Düsseldorf, Germany. He uses a wide variety of media with a focus on film/video, performance and music --whereby all areas give each other impulses. In a narrower artistic framework (exhibition, gallery) he stages his works site-specifically and in installations. Performative interventions (for example at BER - Berlin Brandenburg Airport, Summer 2019) form the soft transition to his musical work. Together with Lucas Croon and Martin Sonnensberger Nikolai Szymanski is a founding member as well as singer of the band Stabil Elite. After concerts in China, Szymanski created the video work Airchina, the title he uses as a name for his current solo project; in his musical work Nikolai Szymanski is responsible for composition, lyrics, production, singing and performance, paying attention to a stringent appearance from cover design to stage appearance.

GURTU, TRILOK God Is A Drummer LP
LP version; 180g vinyl. God Is A Drummer is the new studio album by master drummer Trilok Gurtu. Throughout his illustrious career, master drummer and world music pioneer Gurtu has stood at the confluence of where Indian classical music, Western jazz and funk, African music, and Brazilian music meet. It's been part of his modus operandi for five decades -- making music that defies easy categorization. On God Is A Drummer, his 20th recording as a leader, the uncommonly open-minded musician pays tribute to some fallen colleagues and role models who have guided and inspired him along the way. Leading his dynamic, Hamburg-based group of trumpeter Frederik Köster, trombonist Christophe Schweizer, Turkish-born keyboardist Sabri Tulug Tirpan, and electric bassist Jonathan Cuniado, Gurtu acknowledges the impact that legends like keyboardist and Weather Report co-founder Joe Zawinul, Brazilian percussionist Nana Vasconcelos, jazz drumming great Tony Williams, and his mother, the Indian classical singing star Shobha Gurtu, have made on his musical life. Dedicated to his own guru, Ranjit Maharaj, God Is A Drummer is a stunning showcase of matchless precision, dazzling solos, passionate vocals, percolating rhythms, and deep-rooted grooves. Regarding the title, the leader says, "I named it that because without the drummer, nothing will move. And without movement, the world will stop. The Earth rotates, which is movement. The waves in the ocean, the leaves falling from trees, people talking to each other -- it's all movement, it's rhythm, it's energy. So, with every movement, I say, god is a drummer." Liner notes by Bill Milkowski - longstanding contributor to DownBeat and Jazzthing magazines.

CROSS ISLAND East of the Apple 12"
For their first release of 2020, Kalita Recprds unearth New York-based band Cross Island's highly sought-after 1978 disco single "East of the Apple". Originally privately released on Raja Records as a promotional single to attract tourism and businesses to Long Island, New York, the record has since become highly prized by both DJs and collectors alike, in particular for its B side "Just A Little Different" mix. Here, as a 12" single, Kalita Records re-release it officially for the first time, twinned with Al Kent remixes of both "East of the Apple" and the band's unreleased recording "Wave", both sourced from the original multi-track master tapes. In addition, Kalita Records accompany the release with never-before-seen press photos and extensive interview-based liner notes. Cross Island consisted of seven Long Island-based musicians, influenced on one side by The Beatles and The Beach Boys and on the other by George Martin, Quincy Jones, and Peter Frampton. In 1978, the Long Island Tourism Commission approached the band to ask if they would write and release a record to help promote the local area. The resulting single "East of the Apple" was recorded over the space of just five days in Syosset, a town on the north shore of the island. Although ten thousand copies of "East of the Apple" were pressed, its local purpose and the lack of a distribution network meant that it failed to receive a great amount of airtime outside of the surrounding area, available to purchase only in nearby record shops, on merchandise tables at gigs and as Long Island tourism souvenirs. However, as band co-leader Rob Meade explains, it's purpose had been achieved -- "it was written to be a theme song for Long Island businesses and to draw attention to what a cool place Long Island was. After we released the record, many people were singing the hook, 'If you do it, do it better on Long Island', and so in that regard it was a great success." Here, Kalita Records gives this massive disco single it's just deserts, with Al Kent's two accompanying remixes extending and re-molding the recordings into two modern club weapons whilst retaining and respecting the authenticity of their original sound.

CLERKIN TRIO, TARA Tara Clerkin Trio LP
"Tara Clerkin Trio present their self titled debut LP on Laura Lies In. Similar to that directorial effect of filming at double speed and then slowing down for playback, the record ambles with assurance, expertly paced. Opening with a jovial cacophony before the beatific 'in the room' confidently relieves, washing away any unease with an innately alien familiarity. Coming to with the padded percussive patterns of 'Helenica', taking a moment to remember where you are in this temporal smudge. The serene contemplation of 'Any of these' signals we're homeward with a dependable afterglow, a friend you don't need to thank for a good weekend. A record existing disconnected from the daily getyadowns, a holiday from life, optimism as resistance against mundanity, something extraordinary amongst the ordinary, positively grey. Tara Clerkin Trio create a variety of whimsical soundscapes. The group cover a lot of sonic territory here -- acid jazz, off-kilter psych-pop, avant-garde songcraft and atmospheric dub-wise experiments in the African Head Charge mold can all be found across these seven tracks. All styles are approached with a quiet and disarming guile which are reminiscent of Micachu And The Shapes."

CLOCK OPERA Carousel CD
Clock Opera release their long-awaited third album Carousel on League of Imaginary Nations. Carousel is a unique and intimate look at the emotional challenges faced when becoming a father, a search for new identity and an examination of what you need to surrender in order to change. Guy Connelly, Clock Opera's lead singer, found that the profound life changes accompanying parenthood transformed his writing process. Huge questions dominated and called him to account. There is also a great sense of discovery, joy and renewal to Carousel, a return to the euphoric uplift of their debut Ways To Forget (2012); an understanding of the odds against being alive at all. A new sense of incredible wonder and happiness accompanied by a fresh set of reasons to fear the future. Carousel sees Clock Opera reach new heights in their production and songwriting craft, seamlessly combining a wide range of instrumentation, from distorted bass clarinet, French horns, Suzuki hand chimes, to mournful midnight choirs and ambient swells in collaboration with found sounds and frozen moments. Inspired by sci-fi soundtracks (Jóhann Jóhannsson, Jerry Goldsmith, Mica Levi), experimental theater scores, unpredictable electronica, and futuristic pop, Carousel was self-produced at their South London studios. Drawing from the deep artistic wells of Shawn Everett, Homogenic by Björk, Roy Orbison, and ambient Eno recordings, the album was written in a sequence of intensive bursts in hideaways from Peckham to LA. Nic Nell's wild synth improvisations, driven through a collection of idiosyncratic '80s delays became a huge part of the Carousel sound, drawing from the experimental electronic palette of his Casually Here recordings. As ever, Che Albrighton's furiously energetic drums power the whole operation relentlessly to its target, with spontaneous detail and featherlight touch. Mixed by Kristofer Harris at Squarehead Studios in Kent, in the same room that their sophomore album Venn was made (2017). This creative continuity has resulted in a beautiful and accomplished record, simultaneously vulnerable and triumphant, immediate and multi-layered. Clock Opera rose to prominence in 2012 with their debut Ways To Forget, together with a raft of well-loved remixes for Everything Everything, Christine & The Queens, Metronomy, Blood Orange, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Marina & The Diamonds, amongst many others. In 2017, Venn explored darker themes and wider sonic territory. Clock Opera is: Guy Connelly (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, production), Che Albrighton (drums, percussion, samples), and Nic Nell (keyboards, bass, vocals, production).

OSLENDER, SIMON About Time CD
Debut album for Germany's shooting star on the keyboards, Simon Oslender. A mature feeling for time and how to use it in the right way, when to strike a note or a chord and -- even more importantly --when to refrain from doing so. The usage of rests and space as a creative, dramatic element. All this is usually expected from top-level musicians, qualities that -- and this seems to be the consensus --develop over the years and need a large amount of performance practice; in short: they are a result of "age". But sometimes this does not happen. We all know the sayings: "feeling" -- you either have got it or you don't; or: virtuoso but without any feeling; or: lots of feeling but technically rather inexperienced. Considering his youthful age, it might come as a surprise that Simon Oslender already combines all these qualities in his performance. The 21-year-old Oslender, a steady member of Wolfgang Haffner & Band and Bill Evans & Spykillers, shows his talent on this incredible good debut album. Beside his regular band members Bruno Müller (guitar), Hanno Busch (guitar), Claus Fischer (bass), Hendrik Smock (drums), and Roland Peil (percussion), this album features Wolfgang Haffner on drums, Bill Evans on saxophone, Randy Brecker on trumpet, and the very special guests Cosmo Klein and Peter Fessler on vocals. UMBRA Umbra LP
"What was available to unknown hard rocking dreamers like Umbra in Denver in 1971-72? Weekend gigs. Nothing but weekend gigs. But there was an upside to that: bands like Umbra could mix original material in with covers, and make enough money to survive. Or in the case of Umbra, to make enough money to build a home studio, where they recorded ads to promote their upcoming shows -- and eventually, laid down the eight tracks on this disc. Everything was recorded by bouncing tracks back and forth between two-track and four-track reel-to-reel tape recorders. Spacey intros and weird effects were created by recording guitar licks, then re-recording them played backwards at double speed. What sounds like a flute was the result of blowing over the top of a 14" goose neck (believe it or not). The resulting tracks are hard edged and heavy, verging on acid rock at times. Makes sense, as Umbra was a power trio most of their too-brief existence. Yet the songs (heavy though they are) have a deft touch. There are weird effects, space rock elements, plenty of melody, and a refreshing category-free approach to writing songs that makes Umbra's music exciting to hear. Our Lion LP edition comes with an 8-page LP-sized color booklet, with lyrics, photos, plus interesting and funny things that can only happen to musicians, and did to Umbra. We know that band bios can be sterile and boring or can move to the opposite spectrum, rife with grandiose embellishment. Umbra's story is neither. Instead, it is the story is the story of a band from the early 1970's who recorded what they wanted to record: heavy, heavy music from the start of the 'American Comedown Era' (as we've seen it described by friends for their Brown Acid series of compilations). Umbra's story is also that of a band whose music, terrific though it is, has never to this point been released out into the wide world. Prepare yourselves to be surprised -- and we hope as impressed as we are -- by what Umbra had to offer. First ever release of any recordings by this fascinating heavy rock group from Colorado. 8-page LP-sized color booklet with lyrics, photos, and stories from the road."

LULU AND THE LUVVERS Best Of 1964-1967 Live LP
The best of Lulu, live from 1964-1967, joined by The Luvvers and Bean & Loopy's Lot. Since shouting out her first chart record way back in April 1964, Lulu's profile in the pop mainstream has seen a wealth of Top 10 hits and international success. The '70s may not have offered the same rewards, but pairings with boy bands in the 1990s such as Take That and singer Ronan Keating saw a resurgence in her profile and popularity. However, turning the clock way back to her 1965 heyday with her Scottish counterparts The Luvvers, you can trace her story and irrepressible climb to become one of Britain's most esteemed golden girls courtesy of her performances in session for the BBC. London Calling presents for the first time, Lulu in session at the BBC, backed by beat groups such as The Luvvers and Bean & Loopy's Lot, and duets with Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames, this is a fascinating account of one of British pop music's hardest working and most authentic iconic singers. Professionally remastered original broadcast recordings of her best 18 tracks during this period, and revealing interviews with Brian Matthew recalling her 1964-1967 period. Includes background liners and rare archival photos. Yellow color, 180 gram vinyl; hand-numbered fold-over sleeve, with insert.

SORGINI, GIULIANO Sounds From The Far Space LP
The Earth and the sky are the only entities that unite past, present, and future. The man has always scrutinized the immensity of the space above him. Night after night, linking the bright stars together, the ancient populations of our planet imagined they could translate their myths and religious beliefs into the constellations, ordering today's eighty-eight and calculating with incredible precision, despite the meager tools available, both time and cosmic cycles. From the proliferation of superstitions to the establish of the sciences, the journey has been long and sometimes problematic. The space only still "imagined" with naked eyes, or observed with rudimentary telescopes, has slowly become "conquerable" and, since the '60s of the last century, at the center of an international competition between the two superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union. From the first satellite launched into orbit at the man's landing on the Moon, successful facts have multiplied. Many artists, at any latitude or longitude, tried to "confront" themselves with spatial themes. The composer Giuliano Sorgini is among them. Some tracks of this unreleased album composed in 1973 represent, in fact, an attempt to fill with notes the distances that separate man from infinity, through "itineraries" that do not indicate a precise destination such as, for example, "Upwards", "Outer", and "Thought". Others, instead, describe events that are impossible to be seized, such as "Death Of A Comet", breathtaking landscapes to observe as you float in the air like astronauts tied to the "umbilical cord" of their own spaceship, just think of "Into The Space Immensity" and "Sweet Trance", even human and non-human presences, with the opener "Man In The Space" and the romantic "Ufo" as further demonstrations of the artist's genius. Each track tells what is possible, although invisible to many. Creativity compensates for reality. The sounds of Giuliano Sorgini delicately invest the listener, favoring his immersion in a third dimension, in which elements of classical and electronic music, both with a strong communicative character, are merged and continually mixed up, between echoes and reverberations in the background. The prolonged repetition of tones and the almost imperceptible timbral variations don't hinder the harmonic weaving, explained by piano and flute, or the obscure psychedelic solutions adopted by the composer resulting from an appropriate use of the first synthesizers.

SLUM VILLAGE & ABSTRACT ORCHESTRA Fantastic 2020 V.1 LP
LP version. Volume 1 of a two volume set. Blue vinyl. "Live jazzy orchestral interpretations of the Jay Dee aka J Dilla produced Slum Village classic Fantastic Vol 2! The contributions of the late Detroit producer James DeWitt Yancey -- better known to the world as J Dilla -- to the world of hip-hop can't be overstated, and nowhere is his legacy more apparent than his work as a member of Slum Village. A founding member of the trio, (alongside rappers T3 and Baatin) Dilla provided the group's distinctly esoteric, free-wheeling sound, built around winding basslines, quirky drumbeats, subtle low-end frequencies, and classic jazz & soul samples. Against the backdrop of Dilla's rich production, T3 and Baatin's free-flowing style of rhyming would also earn wide critical praise, leading to comparisons as the successors to A Tribe Called Quest. All these elements would come together in a truly prodigious fashion in the early '00s, when Dilla and Slum Village would release their second studio album Fan-Tas-Tic Volume 2. The group had already made critically acclaimed waves with Volume 1, but few could have predicted at the time of its release that Dilla's production, which combined portions of alternative, gangsta, and soul hip-hop, meshed with T3 and Baatin's deft lyrical flows, would become such a far-reaching influence. Artists like D'Angelo and Erykah Badu have name-checked Fan-Tas-Tic Volume 2 as a key influences, while The Roots' drummer ?uestlove declared that they hands down '...birthed the neo-soul movement.' Enter the Abstract Orchestra. Helmed by composer and saxophonist Rob Mitchell, this 18-piece ensemble has become renowned for their distinct sound, which reinterprets some of the most famous hip-hop productions of all time (right on down to the sample material) into a unique blend of big band jazz and live hip-hop. The group has toured alongside the likes of John Legend, Amy Winehouse, and Adele among others, and have provided live backup for Mos Def, and many more. They previously have released orchestral versions of revered hip-hop record Madvillian and a tribute to Dilla to critical acclaim as well. On this, the 20th anniversary of Fan-Tas-Tic Volume 2's release, the Abstract Orchestra are proud to pay tribute to this highly innovative hip-hop classic. Across two volumes of vinyl, the big band applies their own jazzy spin to Dilla's classic productions, with occasional assistance from the surviving members of Slum Village themselves. The end result is Fantastic 2020, a hybrid blend of smooth, funky brass rhythms with boom-bap sensibilities that is just the kind of tribute that an often unsung, but highly influential group like Slum Village deserves, and is a more than welcome addition to any Dilla completist's library."

SLUM VILLAGE & ABSTRACT ORCHESTRA Fantastic 2020 V.2 LP
LP version. Volume 2 of a two volume set. Red vinyl. PENYA NA MSAFIRI ZAWOSE Penya Safari E.P 12"
On The Corner Records favourites Penya kick off the new year with a collaborative EP with legendary gogo musician Msafiri Zawose. Penya are a genre defying quartet that embody the energized sound of a cosmopolitan UK. A host of traditional folkloric rhythms, club culture motifs, and DIY electronics mark the band's distinct sound. The band's debut LP Superliminal (2018) quickly achieved critical acclaim from a host of taste makers and artists including Gilles Peterson, Bonobo, Tom Ravenscroft, WorldWide FM, Jeremy Sole, Late Junction (BBC Radio 3), and Boiler Room. The band went on tour, quickly establishing its dancefloor ready, multi-instrumental live show. AGAINST ALL LOGIC 2012-2017 2LP
2020 repress. Nicolas Jaar shows he is paying attention to the masses by issuing a widely called for vinyl press of his A.A.L. (Against All Logic) album 2012-2017. Originally issued as a digital-only release back in February of 2018, it's slowly grown to become one of the most cherished releases in the entire Other People discography. Much like Kerrier District did to disco, A.A.L. (Against All Logic) borrows heavily from the samples and sounds ingrained deep within Jaar's listening habits and evidently a record collection packed to the brim with classic soul, house, and most importantly, funk hooks. Keenly twisting these sounds and filtering them through a studio set up that's leaning heavily on the beefed-up kick drums and reverb units to make a well-executed homage to these sounds, pieced together with the inherent idea of making the listener unable to resist the urge to move, be it in a bedroom, basement, or just sat in work staring at a computer screen. A.A.L. (Against All Logic) is both a well-executed homage to all of the above references, yet also just a really strong and enjoyable record from Nicolas Jaar. Its undeniable popularity digitally is sure to see the vinyl evaporate in no time at all.

KRAFTWERK Live Paris '76 & Utrecht '81 LP
Founded in 1970 in Dusseldorf, Kraftwerk was the only German band to rise from the so-called "krautrock" scene to true international stardom. Of course, it was partially their distinct look that set them apart. At a time when long hair and scruffy clothing was the norm for musicians, Kraftwerk cut their hair short and wore handmade suits. And at a time when guitar rock reigned supreme, Kraftwerk did not even have a guitar player -- in fact they soon did away with instruments altogether, becoming one of the first truly electronic bands. With the release of their fifth album Autobahn in 1975 (which mocked the glorification of the shiny modern world that had been built upon the rubble of post-war Germany), Kraftwerk finally achieved major stardom. "Kometenmelodie 1" and "2" was recorded live in Paris during the Autobahn tour and featured the classic Schneider/Hütter/Bartos/Flür line-up. Side B was recorded live in Utrecht in 1981 shortly after the release of their prophetic Computer World. It features their 1978 hit "The Model" plus hits from the album, "Numbers" and "Pocket Calculator".

NAGAYA, KAZUYA Dream Interpretation CD
"There are dreams that I still remember. Although it has been decades since I had those dreams, they continue to pulsate, circulating their pellucid blood, vital and fresh as if dreamt just last night" Singing bowls, bronze bells, and gongs resonate through the mindful layers of Japanese percussionist and ambient producer Kazuya Nagaya's music. In Zen Buddhism, bells are believed to wash away the cares of the mortal world, as the listener follows the resonance of the bell into the silence and stillness within all beings. It is a penetration into the depths of one's self. Nagaya's music is rooted in Buddhist (Zenzhu) philosophy and sensibilities unique to Japan. Concurrently, his work and interests are also contemporary and traverse a broad spectrum of cultures. "There is one thing I have known all along. Someday I will have to face the messages from my unconscious. I will have to decipher their meaning and change my life accordingly. The messages from my unconscious are like a knocking on the door of my mind. For many years the sound reverberated, but I payed it no attention" Nagaya started out to pursue his talents in literature and is also an award-winning writer and a connoisseur on Japanese Literature, Buddhist Folktales, and Zen Philosophical Works. These interests breathed life into his music, and the sensibilities and philosophical views which he developed during his literary years are now reflected in most of his music today. He spends half the week teaching courses at his University in Tokyo, and the other half composing and writing in his home in the Japanese Alps, where he resides with his wife, and many adopted cats and dogs. Dream Interpretations was composed at a difficult time in Nagaya's life. While he worked, he listened closely to the sound of the knocking that reverberated from the paths of his unconsciousness and transformed that into music. In other words, this music is his dream interpretation. CD version includes a 48cmx24cm poster.

KLEIN, MICHAEL Hoisin 12"
Techno DJ and producer Michael Klein has been consistently putting out solid work for years, a habit that has made other DJs -- among them Richie Hawtin, Chris Liebing, and Laurent Garnier -- look to Klein's releases as reliable fodder fit for a variety of moods at any given party. Born in Frankfurt and trained in classical piano as a child, Klein cut his clubbing teeth at the likes of Robert Johnson and Cocoon. He then moved to Berlin where he cultivated his dark and groovy sound, assisted by his studies in sound engineering, and earned a residency at the beloved, now-closed Stattbad. Klein is prolific but versatile, and these qualities come to the fore on his latest release, the Hoisin EP for Second State. The title track, "Hoisin", is a shapeshifter, switching gears from mesmeric, winding bass and rhythmic bleeps to minor, eerie builds, cheeky drum rolls, and more energizing chords. "Bite" is more urgent, kicked along by impatient percussion and an acidic bass burble. "The Signal" is the EP's biggest moment, destined to be a highlight of not just Klein's sets, but others', too. It has the atmosphere of a '90s Bristolian rave, with a whomping stomp, beguiling bass and the odd vocal yelp adding era-specific authenticity. "Hollow Night" demonstrates how deftly he can change moods. Here Klein retreats into something darker and more insular. A kick joined by circular chords creates a claustrophobic but compelling inner world. Klein is a highly valued member of the Second State Audio family and recently contributed an excellent exclusive track for Amelie Lens' Fabric Presents mix. He's been something of a secret weapon in the techno community for years, but while his music prefers to live in the dark, Klein's profile is, deservedly, coming into the light.

ALEX.DO Amplified Music EP 12"
Berlin-based DJ and producer Alex.Do is starting off the year 2020 for Seilscheibenpfeiler with a four track-EP called Amplified Music EP. As a constitutive member of the Dystopian crew he has actively helped forming a new kind of techno and house sound from Berlin, and his rare but recently increasing own releases (for example on Cologne's Magazine or Recondite's Plangent Records) display a stylistically very openminded and capable musician. And so does this EP, which ranges from a pair of warm and moody electro tracks on side A to mindboggling IDM on the flipside. "Maxituning" is brilliantly reverent of classic Squarepusher, Aphex, or ì-Ziq aesthetics and its enduring appeal. "Lebb251212" is a strange off-key exploration of sound, a strong counterbalance to the dancefloor focused material of the EP's first half and a manifestation of Alex.Do's many facets.

ORANG-UTAN Orang-Utan LP
2020 repress. Orang-Utan were in fact a London-based band called Hunter, featuring vocalist Terry "Nobby" Clarke (of psych-pop legends Jason Crest), guitar player Mick Clarke, drummer and songwriter Jeff Seopardi and bass player Paul Roberts. They recorded their sole album in 1971 at DeLane Lea studios. In a bizarre twist of events, their producers/managers ran with the tapes to the U.S., where they placed the album on Bell Records under a new band name: Orang-Utan, without telling any of the band members. A lost classic of blazing, early hard rock with minor psychedelic hangover vibes, a twin-guitar attack, and waves of fuzz/wah, along with powerful vocals. Think Leaf Hound, Budgie, Bang, Sir Lord Baltimore, Hard Stuff. First-ever legit reissue done in co-operation with the original band members. ALACRAN Alacran LP
Sommor Records present the first ever vinyl reissue of Alacrán's self-titled release, originally released in 1971. Powerful hard-rock with West Coast, psychedelic, prog, and Latin-rock touches from Spain, featuring killer lead guitar and organ, sung in English. The missing link between Los Brincos and Barrabas! Alacrán was a Spanish power-trio formed by legendary drummer, songwriter and producer Fernando Arbex along with guitar/keyboard player Oscar Lasprilla and bass player/singer Ignacio "Iñaki" Egaña. Fernando and Oscar had previously played in famous Spanish beat band Los Brincos; Fernando was a founding member and Oscar, who came from Colombia where he had been part of Los Speakers, was recruited for their final line-up, recording with them the psych masterpiece "Mundo, Demonio y Carne". Iñaki Egaña was an acclaimed bass player who came from psych/blues band Los Buenos. So basically, these are three of the best musicians from the Spanish '60s-70s scene. When they started to play together, chemistry occurred and soon, guided by Fernando, they entered the studio to lay down some tracks. Alacrán was the result, the only album by this short-lived power-trio, recorded in 1969 but not released until 1971 (as a self-released edition, distributed by the Zafiro label). It was released in Spain and Brazil but despite the good reviews and interest from some record labels in the US, the band never got to play live and soon they split. Alacrán was over but Barrabas, featuring Fernando and Iñaki, was born... Master tape sound; Hard cardboard sleeve and obi; Includes four-page, color insert with liner notes and rare photos.

SHEA, DAVID The Tower of Mirrors 2LP
25 years ago, David Shea released a crafty piece of complex philosophical and narrative audio collage: The Tower of Mirrors. Composed and produced in New York City, during September-October 1995, it includes 24 tracks, and features guests such as David Morley on analog synthesizer programming, Dave Douglas on trumpet, Zeena Parkins on piano and prepared piano, and Jim Pugliese on percussions. This is what David Shea had to say about it in 1995: "In 1994, I wrote a work based on the Hsi-Yu Chi novel for a large ensemble and sampler which used the 100 chapters as a map for creating an independent musical work. The Tower of Mirrors is a work that began as a collection of pieces for sampler solo and for sampler and solo instrumentalist. A series of 'mirrors' for solos and duos based on parts of the novel. Also, a collection of tributes to composers in ambient dance music, exotica, easy listening film music and experimental music formed separate points of entry. In particular, many of the great arrangers and composers of the period from 1955-64 who were the pioneers of stereo recording such as: Esquivel, Marty Gold, The Three Suns, André Popp..." 2019, looking into the (in)side mirror, David Shea says more about this particular experiment: "I'm reflecting today on the period of my life where I was immersed in the Chinese mythological Taoist/Buddhist stories of the Monkey King - Sun Wu Kung - titled, in English, The Journey to the West. I was also lost in sea of Hong Kong films and living in New York working in many of John Zorn's projects (Elegy being one of many high points) . . . Tower of Mirrors became a defining cross into to the last 20 years of my life. I felt thrown into the ethersphere during the years of 94-95 myself and I could not be more grateful to have created during and survived that time. I collaborated with so many during my travels and the credits are full of the people I was so lucky to have crossed paths with. I began a different path soon after this, with my interest in exploring Italian and Irish roots and reflecting on my teenage years of studying Taoism, Chan Buddhism, meditation, and martial arts and what followed was a long period of influence from Giacinto Scelsci and Luc Ferrari to traditional Chinese and Buddhist music..." The Tower of Mirrors was the third album of David Shea released by Sub Rosa.

DR. BOOGIE Shim Sham Shimmy CD
2020 repress. This is the third volume in Sub Rosa's collection devoted to rare and lost recordings from the '20s to the '60s, following Dr. Boogie Presents Rarities from the Bob Hite Vaults and Oh, Run Into Me, But Don't Hurt Me! Female Blues Singers -- Rarities 1923-1930. Shim Sham Shimmy has been assembled by Belgian radio personality, musicologist, and Canned Heat devotee, Walter De Paduwa aka Dr. Boogie. Is it really possible to imagine what modern music would sound like if a few pioneering geniuses had not had the idea of electrifying their instruments, especially guitar and harmonica, between 1945 and 1950? Some purists pan this evolution, but, in the '50s, the new sound was heard and embraced at all the studios and night clubs in the United States; it would become a staple on the radio, and in pop culture in general, radically transforming the blues, boogie and country into acts of rebellion. This collection pays tribute to about thirty artists, some of whom later became known, like "Master of the Telecaster" Albert Collins, boogie-woogie and blues pianist Champion Jack Dupree, slide guitar innovator Homesick James, harmonica and blues singer, Sammy Myers, "The Boogie Disease" author Doctor Ross, and one-man band wild-man, Joe Hill Louis. However, the real treat is having an opportunity to hear fabulous unknowns who all, one day, had the chance to be recorded, either in a studio, on the street, or on a back porch, before returning to anonymity shortly after. Almost all of the artists presented here hailed from the Southern states; some of them stayed there their whole life, others emigrated up North, moving up the Mississippi, or toward the West to settle in California. The music included here is part of the foundations of all the modern music that would take the world by storm up to our present time. Other artists include: Charles Sheffield, Ramblin Hi Harris, Bobo Jenkins, Clarence Lockley, B. Brown & McVouts, Wright Holmes, Gunter Lee Carr (aka Cecil Gant), Moses Williams, Haskel Sadler, Larry Dale, Baby Boy Warren, Eddie Snow, Guitar Slim Green, Slim Gaillard, Blue Charlie Morris, Willie Egan, W. OISEAUX-TEMPETE Tlamess (Sortilege) LP
LP version. Orange vinyl; includes poster. Tlamess (Sortilège) is Oiseaux-Tempête's first original soundtrack composed for the second feature film by critically-acclaimed Tunisian director Ala Eddine Slim (Festival de Cannes' 51st Quinzaine des Réalisateurs, BFI London, ADF Argentina, Geneva GIFF, Rome Medfilm Festival, Marrakech International Film Festival). Combining hypnotic feedbacks and synthesizer orchestral work, drifting ambient with shamanic beats, the Tlamess (Sortilège) original soundtrack was entirely improvised while watching the movie's rushes. On those sessions that took place between Mikrokosm recording studios in Lyon and Magnum Diva home studio in Paris, you find Oiseaux-Tempête's quartet core team: Frédéric D. Oberland, Stéphane Pigneul, Mondkopf, and Jean-Michel Pirès (Bruit Noir). Fully instrumental, including extended versions, and unreleased tracks, this immersive film score is also their most electronic album to date. "S, a young Tunisian soldier, has been told that his mother has died, and is given a week's leave. Instead of returning to his military base, he starts to drift and locking himself away in his parents' house. This passive form of desertion culminates in a manhunt through the outskirts of the city. In the second part of this hypnotic diptych, a young woman, F, is also fleeing an oppressive situation. Married to a rich man and pining away in a luxury solitude she decides to flee the golden cage and disappears into the nearby woods. Eventually the two characters will meet inside the strange forest." In his second feature, director Ala Eddine Slim presents an intriguing juxtaposition of raw realism with a hypnotic allegory of contemporary Tunisia, held together by an intense, powerful, and grating soundtrack. Regularly pairing with cinema and photography since their debut, Oiseaux-Tempête also accompanied the work of video/filmmakers As Human Pattern (KHAMSIN, best documentary at Torino Film Festival), Hinde Boujemaa (Noura's Dream, Golden Tanit & Best Actress prizes at JCC Carthage), Léa Fehner (Les Ogres, best film at Cabourg Film Festival), Stéphane Charpentier (The Divided Line, Athens French Institute), Karel Doing (Palindrome Series, International Film Festival Rotterdam), Clément Cogitore (Braguino exhibition at Le BAL), and the Temps Zero live screenings (in Berlin, Paris, Toulouse with photographers Michael Ackerman, Gaël Bonnefon, Adam Cohen, Damien Daufresne, Alisa Resnik, Gilles Roudière, Yusuf Sevincli...)

OGYATANAA SHOW BAND African Fire Yerefrefre LP
Survival Research present a reissue of Ogyatanaa Show Band's African Fire Yerefrefre, originally released in 1975. The Ogyatanaa, or Burning Fire Show Band, was one of the more esteemed of the funky highlife groups that rocked the Ghanaian music scene during the 1970s. The band was formed in 1971 by diplomat-turned-composer, musical arranger, organist, vocalist, and record producer Kwadwo Donkoh (a former member of the Uhuru Dance Band), with guitarist and bandleader Nana Ofori-Atta (AKA Ahomansia Wura) and other members that later left the group. The Ogyatanaa Show Band made a rapid impact, scoring second place in the National Dance Band's competition after being together for less than a year, thanks to their superlative arrangement of the oft-versioned highlife classic, "Yaa Amponsah", a tale of a mythical woman which became a popular single when issued on Donkoh's Agoro record label. After issuing a number of other popular singles, the band's debut album African Fire Yerefrefre was finally released in 1975, the line-up now composed of Donkoh and Nana Ofori with drummer and assistant bandleader Ocloo Jackson, bassist Kobina Gardiner, keyboardist Ofori Frimpong, and vocalists/percussionists Kwaku Dua and Pa Oweridu, plus Nakai Nettley on additional percussion. This outstanding LP begins with the unprecedented extended highlife medley of over twenty minutes entitled "Yerefrefre" which revisits highlife gems of the past; for instance, noteworthy material by giants such as E.T. Mensah, C.K. Mann, Nana Ampadu, E.K. Nyame, King Onyina, Jerry Hansen, King Bruce, and Dr. K. Gyasi are all referenced, with E.T's anthem "All For You" and The Black Beats' "Lai Momo" getting special attention. "Mmobrowa" (or "The Downtrodden") was another popular single issued prior to the album's recording and listening to the slowly unfolding groove of the rendition included here, it's again easy to understand the song and group's enduring popularity in its homeland. Similarly, "Yaa Amponsah" and the religious praise song "Agya Nyame" are total highlife killers encompassed in rousing melodies and complex propulsive rhythms.

BAKER/PIERO UMILIANI, CHET Italian Movies LP
Italian film composer Piero Umiliani began working with the trumpeter and actor Chet Baker during the late 1950s. Of part Norwegian and Anglo-Saxon origins, Chesney Henry Baker Jr. was born into a musical family in the small town of Yale, Oklahoma in 1929. After singing in the local church choir, he began playing trombone but soon switched to the smaller and more manageable trumpet. He joined the US Army just after the end of World War II and played in the 298th Army Band while stationed in Berlin and began studying music theory at El Camino College in Los Angeles, following his discharge, but re-enlisted to play in the Sixth Army Band while stationed at the Presidio in San Francisco. Out of the Army for good in 1951, he played with saxophonists Vido Musso and Stan Getz before joining Charlie Parker for a series of West Coast live dates. He then joined the Gerry Mulligan Quartet, becoming a mainstay of the Los Angeles jazz scene, until Mulligan's drug bust forced Baker to form a quartet of his own. Chet Baker & Strings (WLV 82069LP) was issued by Columbia in 1954 and he began recording for Pacific Jazz the following year; cast in the film Hell's Horizon (1955), Baker turned down a Hollywood studio contact to travel to Europe, touring the continent for eight months, which resulted in the album Chet Baker In Europe. Heroin became a significant part of the picture in this era and when he began working with the arranger and conductor Ezio Leoni (aka Len Mercer) in Milan in 1959, Baker was arrested for drugs and jailed in Pisa, temporarily disrupting the proceedings. Baker and Umiliani first joined forces in 1958 for the crime film I Soliti Ignoti (AKA Big Deal on Madonna Street, Persons Unknown or Le Pigeon), reportedly the first instance of jazz being used for an Italian comedy film; Il Paradiso dell'Uomo and Smog (FOX 010LP) followed. Italian Movies draws from the best of Baker and Umiliani's cinematic collaborations, the atmospheric compositions backed by a group of session players centered on drummer Ralf Ferraro, acoustic bassist Berto Pisano, guitarist Enzo Grillini, tenor saxophonist Livio Cervellieri, and Franco Ciari on vibraphone, along with Baker's expressive trumpet leads and composer Umiliani on piano.

HAPPY END Happy End LP
Survival Research present a reissue of Happy End's debut self-titled album, released in 1970. Following the abortive appearance of Japanese psychedelic band Apryl Fool, who imploded after producing an album and an EP for Columbia Japan in 1969, bassist/keyboardist/singer and main creative force Haroumi Hosono and drummer Takashi "Rei" Matsumoto formed Happy End with guitarist Shigeru Suzuki and guitarist/singer Eiichi Ohtaki. The new group's self-titled debut, released in 1970 on URC, the pioneering independent label founded by guitarist Hayakawa Yoshio (initially as the affiliated imprint of mail order company, Underground Record Club), evidenced more cohesion than the Apryl Fool LP; instead of the lengthy, excessive freak jams of the earlier set, Happy End's track list took the form of more easily digestible slices of Japanese psychedelia, the understated drumming perhaps referencing Matsumoto's veneration of The Beatles. Of course, with song titles that translated as "Unflyable Sky" and "Enemy Remember Thanatos!", the music was certainly adventurous. The group would continue for the next few years, before Hosono began to concentrate on solo work, as well as various side projects, which would culminate in the formation of Yellow Magic Orchestra.

HASSELL/FARAFINA, JON Flash of the Spirit CD
Tak:Til/Glitterbeat present the first ever reissue and remastering of Jon Hassell and Farafina's prescient, "Fourth World" masterwork, Flash of the Spirit, originally released in 1988. Propulsive Burkinese rhythms meet revelatory, ambient soundscapes. Co-produced with the legendary studio team of Brian Eno and Dainel Lanois. Composer and trumpeter Jon Hassell has been an elusive, iconic musical figure for more than half a century. He's best known as the pioneer and propagandist of "Fourth World" music, mixing technology with the tradition and spirituality of non-western cultures. In 1987 he joined with Farafina, the acclaimed percussion, voice, and dance troupe from Burkina Faso, to record Flash of the Spirit. While the album is a natural extension of those "Fourth World" ideas, and a new strand of Possible Musics, it also a distinctive outlier in the careers of both artists; an unrepeated merging of sounds whose influence still reverberates today. The eight members of the band -- who had also collaborated with the Rolling Stones and Ryuichi Sakamoto -- brought their long apprenticed, virtuosic drumming, and melodic textures (balafon, flute, voices) to the sessions. They built up layers and patterns of rhythm, while producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois (fresh off the success of U2's Joshua Tree) created a sonic atmosphere in which they could creatively intertwine with Hassell's digitally processed trumpet and keyboards. Despite their initial skepticism, the musicians from Farafina ended up relishing their interaction with the studio team and the trumpeter/conceptualist Hassell. The music that emerged was rich and groundbreaking, a move to transcend the boundaries between jazz, avant-garde classical, ambient and the deep rhythmic tradition embodied by Farafina. On "Out Pours", the groove simmers softly, led by shifting patterns on the balafon, while Hassell's heavily treated trumpet creates breathy swirls of sound that play and dance around them. Percussion leads on "A Vampire Dances," pushing and probing and seeming to force electronic shrieks as a response from Hassell's trumpet, while the keyboard creates a bed of sound that refuses to hold still. "(Like) Warriors Everywhere" takes that idea even further. Over Farafina's surging rhythms, Hassell's electric piano and trumpet dig deep into abstract, melodic ideas hinted at by the Bitches Brew-era Miles Davis band. Farafina create the rhythms and counter-rhythms that spring and move. A new, natural trans-cultural harmony is apparent on the final track, "Masque", where percussion and treated trumpet draw the listener along on a journey through shifting landscapes.

ICEMAN JUNGLIST KRU Mashed On Pills Cassette
Shout out to the cops. Formed from a bond that stretches across time and space, from the rain-soaked Lancastrian hills of Manchester over towards the icy shores of Stockholm, via North down South London and a shared admiration for the hidden reverse of Nurse With Wound and Coil, the concrete surrealism of dead air time grime from the turn of the Millennium and an unhealthy drop of teeth-chattering ecstasy. The Iceman Junglist Kru's debut recording proper distills the influence of all of these sectors of sound, each as important as the other. If you see a cop, throw this tape out of the car window... Written and produced by Lil Schemer and DJ Financial Ruin. Mixed at The Ladywell Grime Lab. Cassette only in an edition of 100.

WATKINS/PEACOCK Acid Escape (Volume One) Cassette
The new duo of electro-acoustic disciple, Zachary James Watkins and analog spacesynth master, Ross Peacock conjures a new possibility of tone, rhythm, and light. Influenced by the likes of dub, krautrock, and experimental pioneers Cluster, Brian Eno, and Scientist, their live improvised blend of psychedelic electronica embraces the fragility of analog and digital hardware systems. Watkins/Peacock engage in vibrant patterns over time with an investment in exploration and exchanges. Watkins has recently returned from Carnegie Hall, where Kronos Quartet performed his original composition "Peace Be Till". In 2017, he composed and performed an hour-long score for the 35mm film "Black Field", collaborating with acclaimed filmmaker, Paul Clipson. His duo, Black Spirituals, has released records on SIGE and The Tapeworm and toured Europe extensively including a six-week stint with Earth. They have since received glowing reviews from the likes of The New York Times and The Wire. Ross Peacock with his band, Mwahaha, have performed extensively in the U.S. performing a live Boiler Room set following the release of their first full length on Plug Research. They were invited by Warp Records to perform at their SXSW showcase where NPR's "All Songs Considered" named them one of their Favorite Discoveries of SXSW. Mwahaha was later invited to the UK to perform alongside Sigur Rós at The Eden Project after appearing in London with Damo Suzuki and Andrew Weatherall. He has been featured in Vice, Mojo, Spin, NME and has collaborated with Merrill Garbus of Tune-Yards and Jel/Odd Nosdam of Anticon. The Watkins/Peacock duo have since performed a live film score at the third annual Haxan Film Festival, opened for the Fred Frith Trio and in May 2018 appeared at MUTEK San Francisco playing alongside Aux 88, Errorsmith, and Francesco Tristano/Derrick May. The duo is in the wake of the first EP of the thematic series, Acid Escape. Personnel: Zachary James Watkins - drum and synth machines; Ross Peacock - Korg MS-20. Recorded by Zachary James Watkins at Santo Recording, Oakland, CA. Mastered by Adam Gonsalvez at Telegraph Mastering, Portland, OR. Cassette only in an edition of 100; Illustration: SavX.

BITTER SPRINGS, THE The Odd Shower + Excretus In Completus CD
Incredibly, despite two decades of recording history, The Bitter Springs have never had a full-length vinyl release until now. The Odd Shower has been four years in the making, and is, unequivocally, the band's finest work. Listeners will be dazzled by the consistency and peculiar brilliance of each and every track. As a label, Tiny Global Productions sometimes afforded the chance to get behind a release that's more deserving of attention than albums by artists with much bigger profiles, and The Odd Shower is a prime example of such an occasion. Dismayed by the lack of attention to their earlier work, much of Simon and crew's recent work was released only digitally. Rather than continue on that path, they redoubled their efforts to create an album which deserved their full treatment. A 7" 45, Love Rat/Less Than Love preceded this album and some of the tracks hereon, but as infectious as that single was, it provides by sparing hints to the magnificent contents of the album. There's a Postcard feel to the album -- that bilious humor, a sarcastic sentimentality hovering in contrast to absurdist portraits of the modern age, and Vic Godard's ever-present influence best explained by his newly enshrined position as the band's organist. Their pugilistic yet literary sensibilities may be at odds, but they've allowed for the addictive electro-tango of "Words Of Love", the bizarre social commentary/celebration/comedy of "Girls In F.I.T.S." (that's "fighting in the streets"), the Fallish guitar and keyboard rant underlining "Angry All The Time", and minimalist folk homily "Mistakes", which self-reflects for barely a minute. It is a homespun masterpiece, and if its physical release is a surprise, the curious will be delighted to learn that five other songs from the sessions are included on a special (and limited) EP called Excretus In Completus. Two of these are from what might have the follow-up single to "Love Rat", two others are songs which couldn't be included on the album for reasons of running time, and the label also added Vic Godard's remix of "The Addison Brothers".

WINDEREN, JANA Spring Bloom in the Marginal Ice Zone CD
2020 repress. Touch issues Jana Winderen's Spring Bloom In The Marginal Ice Zone. The marginal ice zone is the dynamic border between the open sea and the sea ice, which is ecologically extremely vulnerable. The phytoplankton present in the sea produces half of the oxygen on the planet. During spring, this zone is the most important CO2 sink in our biosphere. On Spring Bloom In The Marginal Ice Zone the sounds of the living creatures become a voice in the current political debate concerning the official definition of the location of the ice edge. The listener experiences the bloom of plankton, the shifting and crackling sea ice in the Barents Sea around Spitsbergen, towards the North Pole, and the underwater sounds made by bearded seals, migrating species such as humpbacks and orcas, and the sound made by hunting saithe, crustaceans and spawning cod, all depending on the spring bloom. Spring Bloom In The Marginal Ice Zone is a Sonic Acts and Dark Ecology commission, first shown as a seven-channel installation at the Sonic Acts festival (Muziekgebouw, Amsterdam, 2017). Includes booklet.Jana Winderen is an artist educated in Fine Art at Goldsmiths, University of London with a background in mathematics, chemistry and fish ecology from the University of Oslo. Jana focuses on audio environments and ecosystems which are hard for humans to access, both physically and aurally. Amongst her activities are immersive multi-channel sound installations and concerts which have been performed internationally in major institutions and public spaces in America, Europe and Asia. Winderen lives and works in Oslo.

STACK WADDY Bugger Off! LP
Trading Places present a reissue of Stack Waddy's Bugger Off!, originally released in 1972. Bugger Off! picked up where its predecessor left off, and rampaged on from there. Covers of Zappa's "Willy the Pimp" and the Kinks' "You Really Got Me" might have seemed a little obvious, but both are battered down with such a glorious lack of finesse that it's impossible to object -- anybody familiar with, respectively, Juicy Lucy and the Hammersmith Gorillas' versions of the same songs will come in with at least a vague idea of what to expect, but that's about it. "Hoochie Coochie Man" is even more disheveled, and when John Peel's liner notes reminisce on the group's insistence on recording live, you can tell he's not necessarily looking back with any fondness. On one occasion, he suggested they do a little overdubbing. The band's response to his words would become the album's title. Includes "Mama Keep Your Big Mouth Shut" as bonus track taken from the 1972 John Peel Session. Licensed from Cherry Red.

MUTANTES Mutantes LP
2020 repress. "One album into their career in 1969, Mutantes showed few signs of musical burnout after turning in one of the oddest LPs released in the '60s. Similar to its predecessor, Mutantes relies on an atmosphere of experimentation and continual musical collisions, walking a fine line between innovation and pointless genre exercises. The lead track ('Dom Quixote') has the same focus on stylistic cut-and-paste as their debut LP's first track ('Panis et Circenses'). Among the band's musical contemporaries, Mutantes sounds similar only to songs like the Who's miniature suite 'A Quick One While He's Away' -- though done in three minutes instead of nine, and much more confusing given the language barrier. The album highlights ('Nao Va Se Perder por Ai') and ('Dois Mil e Um') come with what sounds like a typically twisted take on roots music (both Brazilian and American), complete with banjo, accordion, and twangy vocals. Though there are several other enjoyable tracks, including 'Magica' and a slap-happy stomp called 'Rita Lee', there's a palpable sense that the experimentation here isn't serving much more than its own ends. If the first album's relentless eclecticism did in fact occasionally result in dry passages, it's especially true here." --All Music

VELVET UNDERGROUND, THE White Light/White Heat (Purple Vinyl) LP
2020 repress. Vinyl Lovers present a reissue of the Velvet Underground's White Light/White Heat, originally issued in 1968. While 1967's Velvet Underground & Nico was a part of Andy Warhol's global artistic vision, 1968's White Light/White Heat was free of all Warholian influence, so in a way it could be thought of as another debut album. Here the music was left to fester on its own, with no artistic visionary interfering or trying to create a soundtrack for his pop art, and the Velvets filled that void with an album that is an aural subway car full of drunkards, junkies and whores rumbling through the bowels of NYC with a one way ticket to oblivion.
