BAD STREAM Sonic Healing LP
LP version. Transparent green vinyl. Sonic Healing is the third full-length release by Martin Steer's Bad Stream project. Conceived and recorded in March 2020, it reflects the tectonic shifts in society taking place at that time while also responding to personal tragedy: having suffered a stroke, his mother lost her language ability. Having been deprived of verbal and physical interaction with other humans, her son's music became her primary means of communication with him. For the album, Steer sent a single guitar loop to twelve musicians from the extended network of his ANTIME label who improvised with the recording, which was later collaged by Steer into a single, 39-minute long track that stylistically ranges from feverish jazz to brooding ambient and abstract electronica. Together with the Iranian artist Arash Akbari's vivid animations based on generative algorithms and real-time processing, Sonic Healing does not ask how one person can deal with turmoil in their life alone, but how we can create new forms of being together with art as a mediator.

UMILIANI, PIERO La Schiava Io Ce L'Ho e Tu No CD
Thanks to the partnership between Roman labels and distributors Cometa Edizioni Musicali, Beat Records, and Four Flies Records, one of the most iconic and essential works by Piero Umiliani has finally emerged from the archives: La Schiava Io Ce L'Ho e Tu No. The movie was directed by Giorgio Capitani starring Lando Buzzanca and Chaterine Spaak, its soundtrack recorded at Ortophonic Studios in Rome in September of 1973. Widely regarded as one of the most sought-after productions by the famous Italian composer, the original LP is now considered a holy grail among the most serious record collectors worldwide. Perhaps the main reason for this is the magnificent quality of the compositions and arrangements, written by the maestro himself, who reaches one of his compositional peaks with this score. His music is the quintessential Italian sound for '70s sophisticated comedy, its unmistakable flavor now carved into our collective imagination, blending samba-bossa rhythms, funk guitars, dynamic and airy strings, and most of all, those brilliant choirs, always functional in relation to the movie's mood (performed here by the omnipresent Cantori Moderni di Alessandroni in a leading role). Together with the sensual vocalisms of Edda Dell'Orso, they truly represent the identity of an entire genre. The release of this CD not only brings to light one of the freshest and most topical soundtracks of Piero Umiliani's career, but the original master tapes feature the complete soundtrack sessions stored in the Cometa archives. That's why we are able to present here, in addition to the LP's original track listing, 23 tracks never before released in any format, revealing Umiliani's compositional eclecticism and his ability to transition effortlessly from jazz to funk, easy listening to symphony. Personal memories by Umiliani's daughters enrich this edition through their contributions to the liner notes, offering a familiar and intimate perspective about the composer's private life. 12-page booklet; edition of 500.

DE ANGELIS, GUIDO & MAURIZIO 2019 Dopo La Caduta Di New York LP
LP version. Color vinyl; edition of 500. Cabum and Beat Records present, almost forty years after the theatrical release of the film, the wonderful score by Guido & Maurizio De Angelis for the post-apocalyptic movie 2019 Dopo La Caduta Di New York, directed in 1983 by Sergio Martino and starring Michael Sopkiw, George Eastman, Anna Kanakis, and Valentine Monnier. In a post-apocalyptic future, there are two enemy factions -- the Euraks and the Federation -- fighting for dominance, and a solitary warrior is sent by the Federation to New York to retrieve the last fertile woman on Earth. Still enjoying an immense fan base, 2019 Dopo La Caduta Di New York is considered one of the best movies of its genre, which was very popular in the '80s and most certainly influenced by some of the cult-classic American movies that were so prolific at the time. The score by the De Angelis bros. was one of the most sought-after by their fans and film music lovers and represents, like Alien 2 Sulla Terra (DDJ 052CD/DDJ 005DLX-LP/DDJ 005DLXLTDLP). Cabum and Beat Records, thanks to the discovery of the original recording sessions in the archive of the brothers' label, are finally able to offer the complete score on CD. The cover features the original poster artwork painted by Renato Casaro, with mastering by Enrico De Gemini, graphic layout and 12-page booklet designed by Daniele De Gemini and liner notes by Manuel Cavenaghi (edited in English by Josh Mitchell).

GAINSBOURG, CHARLOTTE 5:55 2LP+CD
2020 repress. Double vinyl reissue, with gatefold sleeve (CD included). Originally released in 2006. "Even though 5:55 isn't technically Charlotte Gainsbourg's first solo album (that would be Charlotte for Ever, which was released [in 1986] when she was 13), it is her first solo album as an adult and, with the help of a dream team of collaborators, it's a fittingly sophisticated set that touches on her father Serge's brilliantly louche, literate pop without being overshadowed by it. Air's Jean-Benoît Dunckel and Nicolas Godin (who paid tribute to Serge Gainsbourg particularly well on 10,000 Hz Legend's 'Wonder Milky Bitch') wrote 5:55's delicate music, while Jarvis Cocker and The Divine Comedy's Neil Hannon penned its lyrics. This mingling of French and English influences is mirrored in Gainsbourg's subtly expressive voice and accent, which provides the perfect complement to the album's lush sounds and vivid imagery. On 'AF607105' -- the most Air-like song here -- she's a stewardess recounting the most glamorous plane crash ever; she performs an autopsy on a relationship on 'The Operation,' finally stating that 'the heart was rejected by the host.' As good as the atmospheric heartache of the first half of 5:55 is, it's on the second half, when Gainsbourg and her crew stretch out a bit, that the album really gets interesting. 'Jamais,' a slightly tough, witty cautionary tale about literally acting like you're in love, is a standout, while the sexy, obsessive 'Beauty Mark' and 'Everything I Cannot See' would make her father proud." --AllMusic

GAINSBOURG, CHARLOTTE IRM 2LP+CD
2020 repress; double vinyl reissue, with gatefold sleeve (CD included). Originally released in 2009. "Where her previous album was ethereal and ephemeral, IRM is exciting and eclectic. Beck and Gainsbourg bring out the best in each other: His songwriting and production are so sympathetic and wide-ranging that he's like a director guiding Gainsbourg to inspired performances. Meanwhile, she brings an emotionality and presence to Beck's flights of fancy that make them more grounded than they would have been as his own songs. IRM still offers plenty of beautiful French atmosphere, but it's more mussed than on 5:55: The way the strings turn from romantic to a little sinister on the slinky 'Le Chat du Café des Artistes' is decidedly jolie laide, while 'La Collectioneuse' is as eerie as it is lovely. However, the album delivers much more than looser versions of where Gainsbourg has been before. IRM's title track is a hallucinatory meditation... Elsewhere, she dives into deceptively simple folky pop with 'Me and Jane Doe' while 'Trick Pony''s breathy sexuality and strutting beats feel like Beck repaying the favor of sampling Serge Gainsbourg's 'Melody Nelson' on Sea Change's 'Paper Tiger.' The pair gets more daring as IRM unfolds, with Beck casting Gainsbourg as a world-weary siren on 'Dandelion''s bluesy shuffle, and a sneering rebel on the brittle 'Greenwich Mean Time,' which makes more noise than all of the songs on 5:55 put together... 'Heaven Can Wait''s joyful stomp is self-explanatory, but when she sings 'you could learn to crawl where you used to walk' on 'Vanities,' or 'It doesn't take a miracle to raise a heart from the dead' on 'Time of the Assassins,' it adds even more depth. Playful, heartfelt, and unexpected." --AllMusic

METRONOMY The English Riviera LP
2020 repress. Metronomy present their third album The English Riviera. The follow up to 2008's critically-acclaimed Nights Out, The English Riviera is a sonic progression of epic proportions and affirms Metronomy front man and producer, Joseph Mount, as a rare British talent. Since Nights Out, the band have swollen to a four-piece with new members Anna Prior on drums, Gbenga Adelekan on bass, original member Oscar Cash on keys/sax, and Joe himself on vocals, keys and guitar. This expansion of personnel is reflective of a new record that is mapped by vast soundscapes, incredible depth and warmth, and big pop hooks. Part love letter to the area of Devon coast Mount grew up in and part concept album about his own semi-fictionalized vision of The English Riviera, the tone for the album is set by the opening sounds of seagulls, distant waves and a Music Hall string quartet. However, any notion of whimsy is swiftly dispelled, as the seismic bass line of "We Broke Free" shudders and ushers in waves of layered guitars and synths. Having produced and remixed everyone from Roots Manuva to Kate Nash an album from Nicola Roberts, this is the first Metronomy album that Mount has taken out of his bedroom and recorded in a proper studio. The results are telling. Characterized throughout with a sense of warmth and richness, The English Riviera is in parts reminiscent of seminal 1970s West Coast studio albums from the likes of Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles, but due to Mount's studio wizardry, the record sounds vibrant and entirely of its time. Few other albums will so successfully transcend such a plethora of influences and ideas and form such a coherent body of work.

CHERRY, DON Om Shanti Om CD
An amazing document of the life experiment that was the Organic Music Society. This super quality audio, recorded by RAI (the Italian public broadcasting company) in 1976 for television, documents a quartet concert focused on vocals compositions and improvisations. Here, Don Cherry and his family-community's musical belief emerges in its simplicity, with the desire to merge the knowledge and stimuli gained during numerous travels across the World in a single sound experience. Don's pocket-trumpet is melted with the beats of the great Brazilian percussionist Nana Vasconcelos, the Italian guitar of Gian Piero Pramaggiore, and the tanpura drone of Moki. A pure hippie aesthetic, like in an intimate ceremony, filters a magical encounter between Eastern and Western civilizations, offering different suggestions of sound mysticism: natural acoustics in which individual instruments and voices are part of a wider pan-tribal consciousness. A desert Western landscape marries Asian and Latin atmospheres. Indigenous contributions with berimbau explorations find fossil sounds of rattles and clap-hands invocations. Influences of Indian mantra singing are combined with eternal African voices or with folkish-Latin guitar rhythms, while flute and drums evoke distant dances. In the Organic Music everything becomes an act of devotion and love, an ecstatic dwell in the dimension of a sacred free-rejoice.

LANERI, ROBERTO Anadyomene LP
Black Sweat Records present a reissue of Roberto Laneri's Anadyomene, originally released in 1987. The eclectic sensitivity of the composer Roberto Laneri (Prima Materia) looks unparalleled in the Italian avant-garde context. Anadyomene, published for the first time in 1987, shows the myth of Venus in a dystopian and dreamlike world. Laneri conceives a sound poem that opens up to the archetypal dimension of the water creation, through the symbol of bivalve conch, the myth of the feminine power is narrated thanks to the verses of the renaissance poet Angelo Poliziano. Creating a daring connection between Western and Eastern music, travelling on the Mediterranean Sea, the contemporary technologies and techniques revive and re-read ancient musical practices: contrapuntal structures and minimal electronic procedures venture into exotic analogies, strange Renaissance allusions, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean repertoires. Among otherworldly fairy voices, symphonic wandering pathos, aquatic disturbances, Indian Hindustani echoes, or psychedelic radiances. A special relationship between space and time, architecture and music, the manipulation of sounds conceived as the art of memory in its various meanings of preservation, transformation, and distortion.

ADDICT AMEBA Panamor LP
More than simply being a band, Addict Ameba is a wide Italian collective that makes brotherhood the weapon to live music together crossing all cultural boundaries. The driving force lies in the heterogeneous background of its members and the relative familiarity with different folkloric areas. The original and ambitious arrangements make the result a delicious soup. In this first work, their personal Afro-Latin-beat reveals a sincere meeting between African and Central American traditions... for this reason they are against the drift of continents. The collective is connected to Al Doum and the Faryds, sharing some of their members, the same music label and the Guscio Studio where the album has been cooked thanks to the wisdom of the great master pirate. You can travel halfway between the Atlantic continents, where a gritty guitar deploys a solid knowledge of the stronger Latin-rock -- you know the "Santana of Piola" is on board! -- but it absorbs funky and Tuareg riffs too, as well as brilliant psych deviations. Heavy horns abound with solutions and influences, blowing arias of Ethio-jazz or Cuban-Salsa crossings, such as Calypso and Caribbean progressions. However, it's the rhythmic sailor's section that supports all the dynamics of the sound with impeccable qualities of polyrhythm, sending seas of bodies into ecstasy; maybe they learn this rowing on a boat? Panamor represents "a profound union between living beings and objects in an increasingly divided World." Such pirates of love!

REV, MARTIN See Me Ridin' CD
"Martin Rev's fourth solo album See Me Ridin' was released on the New York label Reachout International Records (ROIR) in 1996. Received by the critics with amazement, it proved to be a watershed moment in his career. Journalist Neil Cooper wrote at the time: 'When I first heard Rev's new record, I was taken aback. Was he serious? Was this some inside joke? He had to be kidding -- or was he mentally over the top!' Its reception echoed that of the 1992 Suicide album Why Be Blue, which sprung such a surprise on fans of the duo comprising Martin Rev and Alan Vegas. On this particular solo album, Rev repeated the trick of dispensing with rough, brittle sounds. This was not Rev seeking to distance himself from his musical origins, he was actually getting back closer to his roots. Signs of Martin Rev's formative influence as an electronic music pioneer can be seen in many places. Virtually no one would have expected him to deliver a doo-wop album, but in the light of Rev's socialization and artistic tradition, it reflects a logical process of absolute reduction. Martin Rev crafted See Me Ridin' as a kind of power pop hybrid, an album which owed much to the R&B and doowop of the 1950s and 1960s; the music which a youthful Martin Rev heard on the streets of New York, the soundtrack to his teenage years which had such an intense effect on him and would resurface in his own works. Nowhere more so than here. The instrumental foundations of these 16 tracks are built on rudimentarily sketched melodic arches, outlines rather than fully defined structures, yet all the more forceful for that. As if the full potency of an R&B band has been distilled into minimalist keyboard compositions. Martin Rev's vocals are as minimal as they are sentimental, wonderfully poetic like a latter-day Chet Baker perhaps, or Jonathan Richman. This solo album not only blindsided Rev's critics and fans alike, but also painted a personal, nostalgic portrait of his home, New York; fading out the noise and contradictions of the city to channel the romantic energy of the metropolis." --Daniel Jahn, May 2020

REV, MARTIN Strangeworld CD
"A strange world Martin Rev's fifth solo album -- Strangeworld -- was released on the cusp of the new millennium. The label responsible was Puu, a Finnish imprint belonging to Tommi Grönlund and Mika Vainio's Sähkö Recordings which came to fame in the 1990s on the strength of its uncompromising minimalist sound. Four years earlier, in 1996, Rev had unleashed See Me Ridin', an album which surprised its listeners with keyboard melody sketches and distilled doo-wop compositions. It was also the first solo album to feature Martin Rev on vocals. Strangeworld started where its predecessor left off. Melodic passages dissolved into a thicket of fragments and set pieces, coalescing in a celestial shimmer between rhythm loops and Rev's voice, which assumed the role of an additional instrument rather than a standard singing part. Martin Rev's familiar murmurs and hums are there, but the music on Strangeworld no longer feeds on the furious rumbling of the electrified city. Instead we hear wonderfully naive singing, lost in reverie, Martin Rev's condensed teenage memories of days when young hearts were breaking to the sound of doo-wop melodies on the transistor radio. There are still flashes of contemporary music and traces of dance elements, but Rev maintains these entered his musical spectrum subconsciously: 'Techno wasn't specifically on my mind while recording but for sure it was already part of the musical environment at that time so easily may have become added to some of the nuances that were revealing themselves in the album's process.' Rev took charge of the album production himself in his home city of New York: 'Strangeworld was mostly produced at a private studio that I booked as much as couple of days a week. It was the beginning of engineers setting up rental studios even in their homes since digital, then in the form of ADAT, and early computerization had suddenly made it possible.' If Säkhö seems an unlikely partner to release the record, there is, on closer examination, a certain congruity between Rev's work and the radical minimalism of the Finnish label's sound . . . Twenty years have passed since Strangeworld was first released, but the world it revealed remains as strange and enigmatic as ever." --Daniel Jahn, May 2020

POSE DIA Front View CD
Front View is the album debut of film-maker and musician Helena Ratka, alias Pose Dia. A soundtrack and theater composer, as well as resident DJ at Hamburg's Golden Pudel Club, Ratka emerged onto the scene as one half of Shari Vari (together with Sophia Kennedy). Now all these pathways or winding roads have converged to create Pose Dia and an impressive album of many facets -- a self-assured debut. Born in Hamburg, where she continues to live and work, Helena Ratka played the saxophone in her school's big band. She then set the sax aside and began experimenting with electronic sounds, initially with film soundtracks in mind for her studies. It was around this time that she picked up a regular DJ gig at the Golden Pudel Club as Ratkat, which led to her meeting Sophia Kennedy. The pair formed a duo, Shari Vari, recorded an album and played numerous concerts. This collaboration galvanized Ratka into focusing her efforts more intensely on making music, a welcome counterweight to the somewhat drawn-out process of filmmaking. Early demo sessions laid the groundwork for Front View. "The album was produced in different places between 2018 and 2020, mostly in my studio at home. Some tracks or ideas came to me in Heidelberg and Lübeck, where I was working on music for theatres." The resulting album takes you on a mysterious journey through a darkish landscape. Pose Dia's tracks assume the most diverse forms -- from supercooled synth-wave sounds or the weightless effortlessness of pop on the one hand, to the dystopian urgency of contemporary club music or flashes of hip-hop on the other. In spite of this panoply of influences and blackwall hitches, the music is never drowned out in a sea of influences, instead the songs radiate a magnetism all of their own. Within the first few sequencer-driven bars of the opening track "At The Beach", the listener is well and truly hooked. The unique quality of Pose Dia's music may owe something to Ratka's pictorial way of working. Enigmatic stories, sounds, words, and voices in the role of instruments help to make Front View into such a kaleidoscopic album, serene and yet tumultuous, minimalist and tender yet capable of exploding in raw anger.

SCHNITZLER, CONRAD Auf Dem Schwarzen Kanal 12"
Sold out, repress in late Nov/2020. Auf Dem Schwarzen Kanal is one of the most outstanding, most sought-after releases in Conrad Schnitzler's extensive catalog. It was the only Schnitzler record to appear on a major label and saw him flirting with the experimental new wave sound that was emerging in 1980, particularly on the title track. Nevertheless, it still managed to sound idiosyncratically unlike any other music around at the time. Recorded with Wolfgang Seidel at Peter Baumann's Paragon Studio in Berlin, the four tracks take us on a caustic, dissonant mutant disco trip which has lost none of its fascination in the years since. It gives us at Bureau B great pleasure to reissue this long lost work.

SORBET Life Variations EP CD
Sorbet is a new project from producer, drummer, and vocalist Chris W Ryan (Robocobra Quartet). The first release via Bureau B, Life Variations EP is a suite of three tracks borne from the same musical seed. A presumptuous thing to tackle across 20 minutes, Life Variations EP negotiates birth, death, and that part in between. "Not just human life, but the life of planets or our environment -- and the death and birth of personal identity; of sexuality or gender." Lead single "Birth (My First Day)" is a celebration of beginnings. Explosions of reverb and breakbeat drum kits are all borne out of manipulations in ProTools, an audio software traditionally for recording and mixing studio performances. Working predominantly as a producer in recording studios and concert halls across the country, Ryan opts to use a tool he knows and re-imagine its usage. Pushing a software like ProTools to its limits and making it a creative tool instead of a utilitarian one is at the core of the palate-cleansing sound of Sorbet -- a place where electronic and acoustic sounds have equal weight. "Death (This Year I Died)" is the shapeshifting centerpiece of Life Variations EP. Recorded in São Paulo when Ryan was there as the PRS Foundation Musician in Residence last year, it distills the cyclical essence of the EP to twelve beatific minutes. Melding scorched synth arps with hypnotic patterns that traverse the flux and form of noise, post-classical, and contemporary electronica, it's a triumph of heady, Technicolor experimentalism from a kind of musical auteur. While artists such as Laurie Anderson, Dan Deacon, Oneohtrix Point Never, and Björk make their imprint both musically and conceptually, Ryan fares a singularly self-referential sound-world in his savvy for magpie-ing: borrowing musical ideas from the likes of classical music and making field recordings of street preachers in São Paulo. Ryan even goes so far as to steal a stray snare drum or cymbal hit from his own vault of the hundreds of recordings he has done as a recording engineer and producer for the likes of Just Mustard, ex-magician and the Ulster Orchestra. Life Variations ends with a type of coda in the form of "Living / Dying". One last presentation of that same chord progression, this time paired with a kind of voice-of-god in the form of Mark McCambridge of Arborist.

SORBET Life Variations EP 12"
12" version.

TUSQUES, FRANCOIS La Chasse Au Snark (The Hunting Of The Snark) 2LP
"In 1967, 1968, and 1969 most of my works were happenings loosely based on Lewis Carroll's The Hunting Of The Snark, a not-so-cryptic poem that, to my mind, gave clues to free the theater in the same way the 'new music' had freed jazz. It never made it to record and I gave up on the idea when I met Sunny Murray and Alan Silva when they arrived in Paris in the summer of '69. Few concert venues would have anything to do with us but we didn't want that kind of connection with the public . . . Galleries, museums, and art/theater/dance festivals, on the other hand, were open to this early multimedia event -- complete with films, masks and early electronic devices (Bernard Vitet, the trumpet player, brought an early portable reverb system to the proceedings). The reels and cassettes we rescued from my basement are rather evasively labeled and the following data is far from precise. The core group was me on piano, Bernard Vitet on trumpet and electronic treatments, Beb Guérin on double bass, Daniel Laloux as MC, Jean Frenay and Jean Vern on saxophones, Michel Kurylo, Annick Astier, Lambert Terbrack, and my then wife Françoise Tusques 'singing' and 'acting', so to say. Jacques Thollot, Aldo Romano, and later Noel McGhie were on drums. I know for sure side A is a studio recording carried out in August 1968 by the comité action musique, an activist group of artists and engineers aiming to reclaim the means of production from the 'record industry'. The line-up is me, Vitet, Guérin, Laloux, Frenay, Vern, Astier, Françoise Tusques, no drums (everyone doubling on percussion), and Michel Portal on bass clarinet and saxophone as guest. Side C is a montage of the surviving bits of the happenings that took place at La Vieille Grille between August 1967-March 1968 (sometimes on a daily basis in '68!), the museum of modern art during the May '68 demonstrations, and the Biennale Of Paris in February 1969. Sides B and D are less theater oriented and may have been recorded either at the American center in October 1968, the international students center in November 1968 (Barre Phillips on bass and Barney Wilen on sax guested on these dates but I'm not able to confirm they are on the tapes), or in the winter and spring of 1969. However, the cassette for side b only read "Snark 1969"... The name of the group (it changed every time it ventured out), the title of the concerts and accordingly the cuts on these LPs were all lifted randomly from Lewis Carroll's poems and novels." --Francois Tusques

CONTROLLED DEATH/RUDOLF EB.ER Death Ceremonies LP
Death Ceremonies is the darkest, most primitive death industrial record, soaked throughout with the smell of rotting corpses and burning bodies. Controlled Death (Masonna) features Maso Yamazaki's most compulsive Korg MS-20 drones and obsessive, disturbing vocals, drenched with anxiety and alienation. Dense atmospheres of doom, death, and decay build up just to break away in deep paranoia. Rudolf Eb.er (Schimpfluch) scratches a near-dead violin over horrifying synth tones, celebrating obscure forest rituals, unearthing an archaic actionism and long forgotten witchery -- decomposing his raw sounds on dusty magnetic tape. Maso Yamazaki (best known for his extreme Japanoise project Masonna) and Rudolf Eb.er (Swiss noise-actionists of the legendary Schimpfluch circle) collaborated live and in the studio multiple times during the mid and late '90s. Both based in Osaka, Japan, a spontaneous meeting brought up their mutual interest in degraded and primitive black metal. Discussing their own latest black brews of sinister side projects gave birth to the idea of the Death Ceremonies LP. 180 gram vinyl; edition of 400.

AFROBEAT MAKERS Afrobeat Makers - Tony Allen Rhythms Revisited Vol. 2 LP
Warehouse find, last available copies. Following Afrobeat Makers Vol. 1 (now sold out), Comet is pleased to announce the second volume of the Afrobeat Makers collection. Tony Allen's original Afrobeat patterns revisited by some of the best international DJ/producers, among them: Doctor L (Paris), Thiago Franca (São Paulo), mps PILOT (Amsterdam), and GnoWee (Paris). Tony Allen has spread Afrobeat to the corners of the globe -- a perfect synthesis of tradition and sophistication. His various collaborations with great artists from all genres and styles is truly proof of his openness. Doctor L, a Paris based music producer, is a sound activist going through musical galaxies, fusing '80s punk rock to hip-hop, electronica and Afrobeat. In 2000 on Comet Records, he brought Lagos' Afrobeat into the third millennium with the album Black Voices by Tony Allen, and also presented his other project, Psyco On Da Bus. Since 2002, DJ/producer mps PILOT has immersed himself in the cutting-edge tropical bass scene. He slips between genres in every possible direction, mapping the cross-pollination and divergence of contemporary music. He has performed on three continents -- both in the remote desert and at major festivals. Thiago Franca is a producer, musician and saxophonist from São Paulo's art scene. He released an album with his power Afro-punk trio Meta Meta for the first time in 2014, and he is also developing his African-rooted solo outfit, Sambanzo. He was also in Criolo's touring band for two years, where he met Tony Allen, which led to two collaborations on the first Afrobeat Makers and Meta Meta albums.

GURTLER, JOHN Eigenlicht LP
Counterchange presents Eigenlicht by Portuguese-German multi-instrumentalist, producer, and award-winning film composer, John Gürtler. Gently teetering between krautrock-influenced synth mantras and saxophone improvisations, down-tempo electronica, sound design experiments, and moments of rich ambience, Eigenlicht is a diverse album of electro-acoustic music. The 11 tracks were recorded between two studios and on location at Berlin's infamous Teufelsberg, the abandoned Cold War era US spy-radio and radar outpost named "Field Station Berlin", surrounded by forest to the west of the city. A document of Gürtler's development, many of the pieces here were first laid down in his bunker-like former basement studios at Drontheimer Straße in north Berlin, before he eventually elevated above ground -- both physically and musically -- building his current Paradox Paradise studio and becoming an established film music composer. In 2019 John won the European Film Academy Award for Best Score, for his soundtrack for Nora Fingscheidt's debut feature Systemsprenger (System Crasher). In recent years John collaborated on a number of projects with acclaimed German producer and composer Phillip Sollmann aka Efdemin, performing live and releasing the Gegen Die Zeit EP on Sky Walking (SKYWALK 003LP, 2017). In part an ode to the Macbeth Systems M5 modular synthesizer, with its three oscillators, much of the album features the towering instrument, whose uniquely rich tone and rumbling, pure bass end characterizes tracks like "Eigenlicht", "M5", "Synthetics", and "Five Voice". John's primary background is in acoustic music, coming from woodwind and keyboard instruments, improvisation and composition. The leap into working with computers and electronic instruments found him exploring ways to make synths and samplers sound as organic as possible. You can hear a polyphonic soviet-built Electronics EM-25 (??????????? ??-25) on "Russia Falling". Part of John's ongoing search took him to amplifying synthesizers in unusual spaces, from the vast basement corridors outside his old Drontheimer Straße studio to the twelve-second-long reverb spaces of the Teufelsberg Station. The track "Old Devil's Hill" is a spontaneous composition played on saxophone, recorded in the middle of Field Station Berlin's highest dome. Through connecting different kinds of old and new wind controllers, John was able to play synthesizers with a controller similar to a saxophone or clarinet, that would recognize lip pressure and intensity of breath.

VA The Harry Smith B-Sides 4CD BOX/BOOK
The Harry Smith B-Sides box set contains the flip side of every 78-rpm record that Harry Smith included on the Anthology of American Folk Music. In 1952, Folkways Records published the legendary six-LP series entitled the Anthology of American Folk Music, compiled by eccentric record collector, filmmaker, artist, and anthropologist Harry Smith. Many historians cite Smith's reissue, with its recordings of country, blues, and gospel music from the 1920s and '30s, and its booklet containing idiosyncratic liner notes, esoteric artwork, and handmade design as a major impetus for the folk music revival of the 1950s and '60s. 68 years later, The Harry Smith B-Sides offers both a resonant listening experience and the closing of a collector's circle. Sequenced in the identical order that Smith created, this new box set offers the flip-side of each record selected by Smith for the original Anthology of American Folk Music. Newly-remastered audio under license from Gennett Records, Paramount Records, Sony Music Entertainment, and Universal Music Group. This box set represents a mirror image of the Anthology of American Folk Music's tracklist. However, the producers have omitted the following tracks due to lyrics containing racist language: track 5 on disc 1, track 4 on disc 2, and track 16 on disc 4. Cigar box, full-color 144-page book featuring original artwork by Harry Smith and four CDs; 84 newly-remastered tracks on four CDs with a full-color 144-page book featuring archival images, original artwork by Harry Smith, and essays by John Cohen, Lance Ledbetter, and Eli Smith. Transcriptions and annotations for each track by more than 80 artists, writers, and musicians that have been inspired by Harry Smith's work including Daniel Bachman, Devendra Banhart, Sarah Bryan, Rosanne Cash, Dom Flemons, Steve Gunn, Will Oldham, Amanda Petrusich, Steve Roden, Art Rosenbaum, Nathan Salsburg, and Peter Stampfel.Features Dick Justice, Nelstone's Hawaiians, Clarence Ashley, Coley Jones, Buell Kazee, Chubby Parker & His Old-Time Banjo, Uncle Eck Dunford, Burnett and Rutherford, Buster Carter and Preston Young, Carolina Tar Heels, G.B. CIANI, SUZANNE Music For Denali LP
Finders Keepers' continued and unwaning commitment to preserving the archives of composer Suzanne Ciani pays off in an avalanche of dividends with this latest master tape discovery, placing further markers in the historical development of electronic music and cinematic composition. Developed at a lesser-documented axis combining Ciani's key disciplines as a revolutionary synthesist and an accomplished pianist, these early works from 1973 capture a rare glimpse of one of the world's most important electronic music figures embarking on the early throes of a fruitful career as a film composer and sound designer with this rare and previously unheard documentary music illustrating the first-ever skiers' decent from the peak of the tallest mountain in Alaska. Capturing innocence and optimism in its composition, but never less than masterful in its realization, Denali takes what would later become the yin and yang in Ciani's versatile musical personality and provides unrivalled vistas from both side of the mountain, scaling a treacherous and fine creative line. The music on this record was also commissioned two years before Suzanne's first Buchla concerts in 1974 and 1975, which were accompanied by her seminal National Endowment Paper, and would reveal Suzanne's proud commitment to the developed Buchla instrument. After hearing this record, it will come as little surprise that the track known as "Ski Song" would later be re-appropriated (and rerecorded) on Ciani's globally critically acclaimed debut album Seven Waves (EGGS 015CD). It stands as testimony to the composer's determination and inventive nature that this single track, which would later make its way on to every future music best-seller list in the country, was originally composed on just piano and the modular synth model which she had helped to assemble on Buchla's production line ten years before her Tokyo debut. "Denali was composed using just Buchla and piano," explains Suzanne in 2020. "It was recorded at Rainbow Recording, which is the studio I found and shared with recording engineer Richard Beggs, who then sold it to Francis Ford Coppola after I fell in love and quickly moved to LA," she laments. Instead, Suzanne would in a short time find her filmic feet in Hollywood (providing sound design for Michael Small's aforementioned The Stepford Wives soundtrack) which would later lead to her winning the accolade of first female film composer to single-handedly record a major motion picture with The Incredible Shrinking Woman in 1982. But it was ten years earlier with Denali that the ball had started rolling alongside the film reel sprockets at Rainbow Recordings.

VA A Stranger I May Be: Savoy Gospel 1954-1986 3CD
An extensive, sumptuous survey of surely the mightiest Gospel label of them all. Sixty-one gems of stomping, rollicking, desolate, ravishing gospel music, intermingling with soul, blues, doo-wop, jazz, R&B, disco, and boogie. Covering 1954-1966, the first disc is infused and incandescent with the hurting, surging indignation of the Civil Rights movement. Twenty-four heart-stopping scorchers by giants like the Staple Singers and Jimmy Scott, alongside less celebrated names like The Harmonizing Five of Burlington, North Carolina, and teen-group the North Philadelphia Juniors, culminating triumphantly with slamming, sanctified versions of "Hit The Road Jack" and "Wade In The Water". The second disc presents sublime crossings of gospel with the soul, funk, and jazz of the Black Power era. Twenty rapturous cuts dot dazzlingly between Muscle Shoals soul, screwed breakbeat, Mizells-style fusion, disco and proto-house. Triumphant re-workings of Sly Stone, Donny Hathaway, and Herbie Hancock's "Head Hunters" will have listeners throwing their pew cushions into the air. The third disc selects fierce funk, rapturous soul and transcendent disco and boogie, loaded with roaring choirs, rocking horns and popping bass guitars, super-charged with celebration and affirmativeness, from the years leading up to Savoy's acquisition by Malaco. Drawn from nigh-impossible-to-find 78s, sevens, twelves and LPs, hardly any of these recordings -- perhaps none -- have been reissued since their first release. The third disc opens with a stupendous onslaught by Edith Moreno which only appeared as a tiny handful of blank-label promos. Presented as a sixty-page mini-book, perfect-bound, with CDs suspended in card sleeves; beautifully designed, with stunning, rare photographs and original Savoy artwork. Sound restoration and mastering were done at Abbey Road. BARBIERI, CATERINA Patterns Of Consciousness CD
Now available on CD for the first time. Patterns Of Consciousness is the powerful second full-length from analog synth composer Caterina Barbieri. Gorgeous high resolution analog textures and algorithmic melodies unfold under Barbieri's careful control, exploring the basic nature of sound and consciousness. These pieces are minimal in arrangement but maximal in presence asserting Barbieri as a unique voice in contemporary electronic music composition. Patterns Of Consciousness was originated by ideally infinite permutation of patterns through a disciplined and exclusive use of machinery (an indexed quad sequencer and a harmonic oscillator). By means of subtraction, addition, and jitter operations, Barbieri derives a myriad of interlocking patterns extracted from an original matrix of just few harmonic archetypes, gradually developing the potential of the reduced constellation of pitches and durations determined in advance. Pushing the limits of her monophonic instrument, Barbieri seeks out counterpoint from a single oscillator through the exclusive use of additive synthesis, fast progressions, extreme melodic jumps, and intricate delay lines. She develops an illusory counterpoint style influenced by her passion for baroque lute music, where fast arpeggios are employed to get effects of sustained chords and overcome the limits of fast decay timbres. But the highly formulaic and germinative style of these pieces is also influenced by Indian classical music's vision of sound as an agent of change and recreation. Patterns are understood as the cells of an organism or the units of a language: a limited set of signs that can be recombined to always generate new possibilities. In POC, repetition and permutation of patterns are explored as tools to reconfigure perceptions and bend emotions, approaching sound as a medium to develop and master our own perceptual art. Emerging machine intelligence, human desire of pattern detection and the understanding of music as a cognitive feedback between humans and technology are primary sources of inspiration for this work. All the compositions share a common fatalistic tension, an impossible running, a restless rush - somewhat nervous somewhat ecstatic - to grasp a meaning out of fragments. Every piece in POC is conceived as a generative entity, a dynamic and living being able to develop its own organic laws, whose inner potential of growth and change is embedded in the initial instructions of the sequencer. Music produced by Caterina Barbieri between September 2015 and January 2016. Mixed at EMS (Elektronmusikstudion) in Stockholm. RIYL: Alessandro Cortini, Eleh.

ASHLEY, ROBERT Foreign Experiences CD
This new release from Lovely Music features Robert Ashley's famous ensemble, the "band" who interpreted his work for 20 years, from 1992 through 2012. They included Sam Ashley, Thomas Buckner, Marghreta Cordero, Tom Hamilton, Jacqueline Humbert, Joan La Barbara, and Amy X Neuburg. This recording was made at the Hebbel Theater, Berlin on May 12, 1995. The opera was also heard live at the Festival d'Avignon, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Musica Strasbourg, and Site Santa Fe. Foreign Experiences is one of the opera tetralogy that Ashley wrote in the early 1990s, following Perfect Lives (LCD 4917CD/LDVD 4917DVD) and Atalanta (Act of God) (LCD 3301CD, LCD 3303CD). He would give it the overall title (also the name of one of the component operas) Now Eleanor's Idea. These four operas would follow the stories of some of the characters who populated Perfect Lives a decade earlier. We met Don last year when Lovely Music released a CD of a new Ashley "band" performing Improvement (Don Leaves Linda) (LCD 5002CD) at the Kitchen, New York. In Foreign Experiences "Don gets a job at a small college in the southwest. Once there, against all expectations, everything goes wrong. He loses his family and friends, he loses his car, he fears that he will lose his mind." He comes to believe that he has been given a mission, to learn about premonitions and he embarks on a journey to find the wise man who will give him priceless information. Linda thinks he plan is foolish; Don thinks he has no choice. But is the opera really "about" Don and Linda? "Opera likes to simplify and enlarge its characters to make them fit grand themes. Mr. Ashley goes in the opposite direction and arrives at the cosmos just as easily. Mundane chitchat about good eating habits or car repair turns to metaphysics, ontology, epistemology, not to mention psychiatry, before we know it." -- Bernard Holland, The New York Times (November 21, 1994) The live recording was made by Tom Hamilton and Cas Boumans, and this release has been edited mixed by Tom Hamilton. A slipcase includes a jewel case with a four-page folder, and a 96-page booklet of the full libretto.

LAIBACH Bremenmarsch: Live At Schlachthof, 12.10.1987 CD
"Laibach is art, but more than just art. Founded on 1st June 1980 in the then heavy industrial Yugoslavian town of Trbovlje (today a city in central Slovenia), the band took their name after the German designation of the Slovenian capital Ljubljana which was undesirable in Yugoslavia during the Tito's and post-Tito era. In 1987 Laibach signed a long-term contract with Daniel Miller's renowned London Mute Label and had finally found their musical home. The artists roster of Mute included such well-known artists as Depeche Mode, Nick Cave, Erasure, Yazoo, Moby and also Kraftwerk. From now on the commercial success story of Laibach could also be written. Mute released Opus Dei. The album includes, inter alia, a specific 'Laibach' - interpretation of 'Live Is Life', the big single hit of the Austrian group Opus (one as a German version under the name 'Leben heißt Leben' as well as an English version under the title 'Opus Dei') and also the interpretation of the Queen track 'One Vision' (in German under 'Geburt einer Nation'). The sound of Laibach had become more commercial, the avant-garde and industrial parts gave way in favour to Laibach's 'militant classicism', the band had found its style. Laibach went on tour, now playing in larger halls and clubs in Germany. On 12th October 1987 Laibach made a stop at the Bremen Schlachthof. Here the live album Bremermarsch was recorded, which is now released 33 years later. In spring 2020 Laibach edited the 'old' original recordings and digitally mastered them in their studio. The recordings sound fresh and unspent, the sound is great, the mood in the audience as well. And that Laibach is performing the 'hits' such as 'Die Liebe', 'Life is Life' and 'Geburt einer Nation' ('Birth of a Nation') can almost be taken for granted."

Abstract Forms is a selection of rare as yet unreleased in any physical format Sandro Brugnolini recordings from the late '80s and early '90s. The sixteen electronic tracks were produced for television background use or synchronization and, thanks to their great intensity and suspense, are still perfect to be scored in any number of thriller sequences, connecting smooth jazz memoirs filtered with machines overplayed on videogame sounding backgrounds. The majority of these experiments are not only characterized by their use of electronic instruments, as dictated with the requirements of the time, they also have a specific rhythmic inventiveness that gives them their identity. One more time, the Italian brilliant composer follows his strong drive in drawing inspiration from what technology can offer him.

VILLALOBOS, RICARDO Dependent and Happy 1 2x12"
2020 repress. 2x12" version, part 1. The distance from Ricardo Villalobos' last field trip Thé au Harem d'Archimède (PERL 043CD) in 2004 to the present epic album is a galaxy of electronic expression through sound, independent from time and space. It is said that funk is defined by the notes that are not being played. The space between the notes here is so vast, that funk becomes transformed into the spirit that creates unfathomable emotional adventure. The rules of dynamics between 0 and 1 shift the relation from reality to relaxation. Previously-unreleased, mixed, free-floating sessions are made out of natural, secret ingredients from the limbic system of astro-Aztecs. They evolve from rituals, ending in the release of the sinuous percussion ghost from the machine who breathes out a score for easy living, which sounds like a primordial soup aerosol of funky molecules and molluscs. The vinyl edition comes in three parts and contains a total of 14 tracks.

JOSEFUS Not Dead Yet: Unreleased 1978 Studio Sessions & Live LP
Includes insert. Second pressing of this collection of scorching rarities from these venerable and legendary psychedelic hard rockers. "From the fine folks over at ShroomAngel Records comes this LP release of unreleased studio & live recordings from Texas hard rock act Josefus. What you get on Side A are four studio recordings from 1978, as well as a studio track from 2004, and over on the B side five live tracks from a reunited Josefus in 2012. If you like rugged, raw, bluesy '70s styled hard rock, you've come to the right place. On the 1978 studio recordings, the band were comprised of Pete Bailey (vocals), Dave Mitchell (guitar), Ray Turner (bass), and Jerry Ontiverez (drums). Plenty of meaty riffs, rock solid rhythms, and wailing vocals permeate the raunchy 'Wheels'; and 'Rock X,' 'Gamblin',' and 'Five'll Get Me Ten,' share many of the bluesy, proto-metal traits of trailblazing acts like Cactus, Humble Pie, and Nazareth. 'Slave of Fear,' though recorded many years later, doesn't actually sound much different, and is even heavier than its predecessors, with a strong psychedelic, bluesy hard rock vibe that reminds of early Led Zeppelin in spots. Mitchell's guitar work on this one is outstanding. The live tracks from 2012 see Bailey and Mitchell still on board, with Mark Weathers joining on bass and Leesa Harrington-Squyres on drums (who also plays in the all-female Lez Zeppelin from New York -- Led Zeppelin tribute band). 'Situation' is a brief yet heavy hitting rocker, and 'Crazy Man' once again brings to mind classic Cactus with its thunderous rhythms and blistering lead guitar work. 'Hard Luck' is more of a conventional rocker, but still works, with Bailey's vocals reminding of vintage Leslie West and Mitchell once again delivering some wild lead guitar solos. We also get an updated version of 'Rock X,' quite snarling and angry this time around. So, some great vintage studio stuff from the vaults, and compelling live material from a still viable Josefus. You have to love when these '70s acts reunite and come back better than ever, showing that even the old guys can still rock with the best of them. This one's released only on LP, so if you've been groovin' to some vinyl lately and love classic styled heavy rock, give this one a spin." --Pete Pardo, seaoftranquility.org

JOHANNSSON WITH HILDUR GUDNADOTTIR & ROBERT AIKI AUBREY LOWE, JOHANN End of Summer LP
Originally released in 2015. End of Summer captures Jóhann Jóhannsson's journey to the Antarctic Peninsula to discover the calm scenery of a landscape changing seasons, barely influenced or even noticed by humanity. The Super 8 film is a comforting study of a peaceful setting in one of the most crucial and endangered areas of our planet. Accompanied by rich and detailed field recordings of the surrounding this footage makes a perfect foundation for Jóhann's musical compositions, performed together with fellow musicians and friends Hildur Guðnadóttir and Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe. The varying use of cello, voice, synthesizer, and electronics creates a listening experience that reflects both the vast beauty of the quiet scenery and the necessary cautiousness of its inhabitants. As if gliding through the steep ice, its rough edges, and the harmonious water movements, organic arrangements are patiently devolving into voice and electronic based ambience that adds warmth to the icy, artefact laden environment. The soundtrack to End of Summer is an emotional, enduring listen and a compelling experience. Forming a soundscape as broad as the view it was inspired by yet equally heartwarming, devotion to the music will slow down time and provide a moment of harmony within times of change. LP edition features the soundtrack, as well as Field Recordings and Sound Design from End of Summer on the B-Side, exclusively on vinyl. The reissue coincides with the first-ever digital release of Jóhann's short film over on Mubi. "Field Recordings and Sound Design from End of Summer" on the B-side, exclusively on vinyl. MAYA, DONNA Lost Spaces -> Detroit LP
"Don't go out there, you might get shot" was the warning from Donna Maya relatives when she visited Detroit in 2018. That makes her even more curious to explore the city. Disturbed by, as well as fascinated from the dystopian state of Detroit she recorded many places that made (industrial) history, including the Ford factory, the world's tallest, now abandoned central station and the once magnificent Michigan Theater, that was brutally converted into a parking garage. Donna Maya transformed the sound recordings into artificial sound sculptures combined with electronic beats. Every track is dedicated to one of those places and makes it musically alive. With her theremin Donna Maya guides the listener deeply inside. The result of Donna Maya's six-week stay in Detroit is her album Lost Spaces -> Detroit. Lost Spaces -> Detroit is about how to handle crises, how individuals get along with it and the relationship of society to its culture. Donna Maya understands Detroit as a perfect example for what capitalism does when people give up cultural values. With Lost Spaces -> Detroit Donna Maya draws a musical picture of how she experienced Detroit that shows that not only a city got lost, but a living space for everyone: Pure urban experimental electronics with theremin. 180 gram vinyl.

Armed with deeper grooves, tighter arrangements, and unconventional hooks, the German trio have found the perfect balance between song and sound on their most irresistible work to date. The briefest trip through their back catalog unearths a wealth of artifacts from an unremembered '80s, be it the cassette tape fuzz which saturated early releases or the genuine love of the decade's underground outcasts. Recall a distant teenage memory of hours lost in an older, cooler friend's record collection; a blur of bedsit anarchists, jangling romantics and monochrome poets alive in polyphony. The result is a mirage of post-punk and Postcard, Penthouse, and Pavement, inspired by the past but impossible to pigeonhole. Ever referential but never reverential, unhappybirthday have that rare ability to distill their influences into an innovative expression far more potent than the sum of its parts. For mondchateau, their second LP on the mighty Tapete Records, unhappybirthday swap Cocteau cool for cocktails by the pool, fusing their sophisticated pop with the louche grooves and ambient beauty of Deutsche Balearic. Taking a stroll through Miko's garden, the trio find Sade under the Kalimba Tree, enjoy an I.C. spritz and savor the tristeza of the late afternoon sun. Punctuated by rhythm box exotica and Diana Kim's limber bass, the nine songs lilt and sway from T.V. Scene to Same Old Scene, the beguiling combination of optimism and melancholy yielding a yearning beauty. Equal parts brooding and ringing, Tobias Rutkowski's guitar is the embodiment of this tension, while the digital keys, glassy mallets, and moonlit chimes of Daniel Jahn's SQ1 provide a shimmering home for his seductive croon and husky introspection. Their ongoing collaboration with Berlin producer Jonas Meyer continues to lend a maturity and clarity to the unhappybirthday sound, while guest vocals from the likes of indie pop icon Andreas Dorau and label-mate Sebastian Lee Phillip (Die Wilde Jagd) add nuance and texture to their sonic palette. A resort collection for SS20, mondchateau offers horizontal dancers, beachfront dreamers, and tidal drift; an aspirational statement undercut by the inescapable feeling that the summer ends only too soon.

Newman, Roy Orbison, and K.C. and the Sunshine Band, as well as some originals, Chilton produced a looser album that allowed his new found creativity to flow through the many cracks, simultaneously dividing fans into two camps: the Big Star purists, and the ones who were able to see the genius on the flip side of its demise. 15 tracks, licensed from Last Call label in France.

On a mission to unite people through music, the mix is abundant in groove-filled, percussion-heavy sounds that Hyenah is famed for. Following select releases on Freerange, Objektivity, Rise, and a 12" for Watergate Records, Hyenah delivers this transcendent edition of the Watergate mix series. "When creating this mix I wanted to take people on a journey that represents what I do and what I stand for. I am building bridges . . . For me the beauty in music is when different styles and cultures meet and become something new." Watergate 27 commences with "Warm Drum", Hyenah introducing the mix with an epic opener, burning synths signal the intensity of the journey ahead. Lemon & Herb's "iFuh" sees tribal calls and driving hi-hats build the tension. A mystical atmosphere is formed on "Reincarnation" by Pablo Fierro as chants call out. Huge waves of colorful melodic house are featured from Fka Mash, Sascha Braemer, Sabb & Black Circle, and AMEME, offering different shades of light and dark. Not just a mix alone, deep thought is provoked throughout the listen. This is displayed on the vocals during the Kollektiv Turmstrasse remix of Adana Twins' "Jupiter" before being taken into Da Capo's melancholic strings. Hyenah's "Not Enough" carries a powerful message from the unmistakable and authentic Lazarusman, who stresses the importance on the listener of becoming "anti-racist", to be an activist and to look from within to fight racism on a global scale. Transitioning into the second half of the mix, a cinematic soundscape comes from JAMIIE & Niko Schwind. The Floyd Lavine remix of "Think Of Something" sees a rhythmic stamp on Kerri Chandler's original deep house Watergate production. Infectious groove is created by Hyenah & Floyd Lavine and FMX Omar, before more superior dancefloor energy from Super Flu. Closing with emotion and tenderness, the productions of Manoo and Emanuel Satie & Nanghiti will find a place in both hearts and minds. The eclectic Henrik Schwarz brings the curtain down with his remix of Hyenah's "The Message", a rousing finale featuring the vocals of Bajka typifies the sense of unity that is the golden thread running through this mix. Also features FNX Omar.

GUIOT, DOMINIQUE L'Univers De La Mer LP
2020 repress; LP version. 140 gram vinyl. WRWTFWW Records present the official reissue of super-rare and fabled prog-rock/library/synth album L'Univers De La Mer by French composer Dominique Guiot. Written, composed and played by Dominique Guiot with his Mellotron, Minimoog, clavinet, organ, and guitar, L'Univers De La Mer draws its inspiration from deep sea exploration, oceanic creatures, and underwater kingdoms. The 12-track album navigates organically through diverse mutations of the prog-rock and synth kind, from scenic meditation pieces ("Wind Surf Ballad"), to medieval electronica ("Une Ballade Pour Une Goélette"), spacey smooth jazz ("Les Deux Poissons"), funked-out fantasy folk ("L'Univers De La Mer"), or even incredible Sega Mega-CD vibes ("La Danse Des Méduses") -- altogether painting a fascinating world of eerie magic and subaquatic sensuality. It's escapism at its best with subtle overtones of Schicke Führs Fröhling, Mike Oldfield, and Claude Perraudin. The sound of the album is brilliantly captured by its surreal cover art, the work of legendary artist Jacques Wyrs, whose memorable record sleeves include Klaus Schulze's Picture Music (1975), Eloy's Floating (1974), Ange's Le Cimetière Des Arlequins (1973), and the 1974 reissue of Larry Coryell's Spaces. Sourced from original masters. LP version comes in 350gsm sleeve; 140 gram vinyl; available on vinyl LP for the first time since 1978.
