Between surf music and ballad, this record rediscovers the effervescent Khmer musical scene of the 1960s. In 1959, in the midst of artistic turmoil, Mol Kamach and his brothers created a band: the Baksey Cham Krong. Kagnol got his guitar inspiration from the Ventures and the Shadows while Kamach admired the vocal techniques of crooners such as Paul Anka, singing in either French or Khmer. In 1975, Khmer Rouge stopped musical development. This reissue brings back the Cambodian musical scene of the 1960s.

ALIEN ENSEMBLE Alien Ensemble 2 CD
Alien Ensemble present their second album, Alien Ensemble 2. Micha Acher, who plays tuba in the band Millipede and is also a member of The Notwist, formed Alien Ensemble in 2010 as a passion project. He wanted to have a personal outlet that allowed him to focus on his two greatest passions: playing trumpet and coming up with intricate, instrumental arrangements. The Ensemble's self-titled debut album was released via Alien Transistor (N 040CD/LP, 2014), the label Micha's been running with his brother Markus since 2003. Arriving in a similar vein as its predecessor, everything from jazz to kraut, from ambient to soundtrack-type music, from new music to pop is present. Playing more and more shows has, over time, turned "this project into a proper band" as Acher explains: "At this point, each of us has really found his place in the dynamic of the group - also in terms of how we write and compose." A case in point being the new track "Skeleton Dance" which was written by Andi Haberl, drummer of The Notwist. The track has a beat that can only be described as stoical, a banjo that settles on one chord and stays there all the way till the end, topped off by amazing melodies that shape shift and interlock just beautifully. "Gedanken" written by trombone player Matthias Goetz, who also plays in the band Millipede, is the Ensemble's definition of pop: a slow-moving lower end, contributed by Haberl (drums) and Matthias Pichler (bass), that has an almost hip-hop feel to it. Given the certain cool, seasoned and nonchalant attitude, there's nothing cold or dispassionate about these recordings. Instead, the new material's emotional depth is already present in album opener "Arc Trilogy". What starts out as an almost classic "cool jazz" song, suddenly disintegrates and makes way for the only solo part on 2: Double bass player Matthias Pichler uses a bow and takes it into unexpected new music territory. The Notwist's Karl-Ivar Refseth (vibraphone) manages to steer the track towards a more ambient-sounding sphere. The shape-shifting harmonies and arrangements presented by Alien Ensemble on this album are never predictable. The Ensemble keeps breaking new ground, creating one set of colorful hues after the next. It's an album that's stunningly compact and coherent. Says Micha Acher: "Well, we recorded it in just one day. Things were really relaxed and easy."

"Superb late-seventies soul from Hawaii. Sleekly bumptious, with brilliant musicianship and classy arrangements, dosed with jazz and funk (by way of Kool And The Gang), easily traversing ballads and booty-shakers... just the kind of thing Wayne Henderson was doing across the Pacific at the time with At Home productions, for Side Effect, The McCrarys and co. BITORI Legend Of Funana: The Forbidden Music Of The Cape Verde Islands LP
LP version. In 1997, an unassuming 59-year-old man named Victor Tavares -- better known since the late 1950s as Bitori -- walked into a studio for the very first time to record a work that many Cabo Verdeans consider to be the best funaná album ever made. Analog Africa's Legend Of Funaná marks the first time that these recordings, originally issued as Bitori Nha Bibinha & Chando Graciosa in 1998, have been available outside of Cape Verde, bringing Bitori's beloved accordion-based sound to the world. In 1954, Bitori embarked on a journey across the seas to the island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe with the hopes of returning with an accordion. Following two years of hard labor, Bitori had saved enough money to acquire what was to become his most valued possession. The two-month journey back to Cape Verde provided time enough for him to master the instrument. Self-taught, Bitori developed his own style, an infectious blaze that quickly caught the attention of the older generation. Before long Bitori was asked to perform at local festivities around Praia, the capital of Cape Verde. But not everybody welcomed the rural accordion-based sound of the funaná. Perceived as a symbol of the struggle for Cabo Verdean independence and frowned upon as music of uneducated peasants, the funaná was prohibited by Portuguese colonial rulers. Performing it in public or in urban centers had serious consequences -- often jail time and torture. As a result, the funaná began to slowly disappear. In 1975, Cape Verde achieved independence from Portuguese colonial rule, and the ban on the funaná was lifted. Many artists embraced the funaná, translating and adapting its musical form in new ways. It was not until the mid-1990s, however, that the funaná in its traditional form was actually recorded. A young singer from the Cabo Verdean town of Tarrafal, Chando Graciosa, heard Bitori and immediately felt drawn to his playing style -- a raw, passionate sound accompanied by honest lyrics that reflected the harsh reality of the Cabo Verdean working class. He approached Bitori suggesting they join forces and travel overseas to take the funaná beyond its rural roots. After introducing a receptive European audience to the vibrant energy of the funaná, Bitori eventually returned to his beloved Cape Verde, while Graciosa settled in Rotterdam. Graciosa vowed, however, to bring Bitori to Holland to eventually record an album. In 1997, the time was ripe to immortalize the sound Bitori had shaped over four decades. Drummer Grace Evora and bassist Danilo Tavares helped record "Bitori Nha Bibinha," which catapulted Graciosa to stardom, establishing him Cape Verde's foremost interpreter of the funaná. Bitori's songs quickly became standards -- classics known and loved throughout the country.

GEMINI Imagine-a-Nation 2LP
The story of Gemini aka Spencer Kincy, one of Chicago's most mysterious and revered characters, has become something of a myth in recent years. Blazing a trail throughout the '90s, prolifically releasing over 200 tracks from 1994 to 1999, Kincy had shades of innovation and soul few of his peers could match. Then, suddenly, at the peak of his career, he disappeared. Gemini's most complete and varied album is 1997's Imagine-a-Nation, originally released on the Cajual sublabel Relief Records. You know the music -- every track is on YouTube, and expensive original pressings are available on Discogs -- but here it is in its fully remastered glory! Rumors and gossip of Kincy's whereabouts and situation have been rife in the music press, and rarely on the money. Kincy is alive and well at the time of this release, and wants his music to be heard. This album has been licensed directly from him, and the money made from its exploitation will go directly to him.

BAIRD SISTERS, THE Until You Find Your Green CD
"Considering they've collaborated ever since they were kids living under the same roof, The Baird Sisters arguably could have made an album like Until You Find Your Green years ago. They've released two live recordings (the first recorded by their dad) and made plenty of demos, but this marks the first time Laura and Meg Baird decided to write and record a full-length on their own terms. The songs, recorded in Laura's house, have a familial intimacy joined by skillful depth, the ideal blend for a folk record, an equal mix of comfort and talent. These recordings capture the complexity of seventies progressive folk rock, emphasizing acoustic instrumentation with a lack of self-consciousness that can only come from a private domestic environment. Meg plays guitar, Laura banjo, singing in harmony, and ornamenting their songs with flute, cello, fiddle, mandolin, upright bass, percussion and a cricket chorus. Until You Find Your Green's songs seem traditional, but that's deceptive, and they unfold in greater depths the deeper attention paid to them."

METRONOMY The English Riviera LP
2016 repress. Metronomy present their third album The English Riviera. The follow up to 2008's critically-acclaimed Nights Out, The English Riviera is a sonic progression of epic proportions and affirms Metronomy front man and producer, Joseph Mount, as a rare British talent. Since Nights Out, the band have swollen to a four-piece with new members Anna Prior on drums, Gbenga Adelekan on bass, original member Oscar Cash on keys/sax, and Joe himself on vocals, keys and guitar. This expansion of personnel is reflective of a new record that is mapped by vast soundscapes, incredible depth and warmth, and big pop hooks. Part love letter to the area of Devon coast Mount grew up in and part concept album about his own semi-fictionalized vision of The English Riviera, the tone for the album is set by the opening sounds of seagulls, distant waves and a Music Hall string quartet. However, any notion of whimsy is swiftly dispelled, as the seismic bass line of "We Broke Free" shudders and ushers in waves of layered guitars and synths. Having produced and remixed everyone from Roots Manuva to Kate Nash an album from Nicola Roberts, this is the first Metronomy album that Mount has taken out of his bedroom and recorded in a proper studio. The results are telling. Characterized throughout with a sense of warmth and richness, The English Riviera is in parts reminiscent of seminal 1970s West Coast studio albums from the likes of Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles, but due to Mount's studio wizardry, the record sounds vibrant and entirely of its time. Few other albums will so successfully transcend such a plethora of influences and ideas and form such a coherent body of work.

79.5 Terrorize My Heart 7"
"Hard to categorize, easy to love, 79.5 has been making tons of noise around New York City for the past year. 'Terrorize My Heart', a tune leaving no room for gray, finds the ladies of 79.5 walking the line between vulnerability and forthrightness. Setting out with admonishments of love and infatuation that are checked by the bluntness of women who've lived in the Big Apple for years, 'is it her or is it me, that's how it's gotta be'. A smashing rhythm section covered in punching Rhodes chops, flute parts, and dubbed out reggae rhythm guitar sets the perfect vibe for the ladies to trade off leads and come back together in three part harmonies: All the while taking the whole tune from half time to double time. The B side, coined the Disco Dub mixed by Jens Jungkurth, finds Michels' production taking 'Terrorize My Heart' from the change where it goes to four on the floor and lacing it with drums and a clap track that absolutely pushes this tune over the edge into the realm of dancefloor banger."

EL'BLASZCZYK ROCK BAND HIMSELF The Quirky Lost Tapes 1993-1995 CD
The cobbled music and strange pieces from the unpublished majority of The Quirky Lost Tapes 1993-1995 are as bizarre as the genesis of El'Blaszczyk Rock Band Himself. Recorded on tape, at times featuring his ten year old little sister, the irresistible charm of El'Blaszczyk's pieces reveal a delicious bawdiness that is reminiscent of the universe of Jean Yanne, Les Charlots or Boby Lapointe. This is vaguely rhythmic garage music. El'Blaszczyk explores such topics as illness, the French resistance during WWII and medicine in general - all adding to the uniqueness of it all. More than a joke, these pieces are subtle and accomplished, but something suggests that these recordings are also their first plays. In parallel to his schooling at the Beaux Arts, El'Blaszczyk was a student of Christian Eloy, the eminent composer of concrete music and head of the electroacoustic creation of class at the National Conservatory of Bordeaux. No doubt a magneto-phage animal, being a student of Eloy's and his time at the academy reinforced his electro-artisanal approach to music. This period of study and intense creativity allowed him to explore a new path to infinite perspectives, but the academic expectations were ultimately codified - productions for the "less displaced" were received with great caution. The academy allowed him access to a usually difficult to mobilize instrumentation by an amateur: Grand piano, Hammond organ, orchestral percussion, drums, synths and VCS3 Moog 55. The sound database has also served as much to his compositions of concrete and electronic music as it did to his pop productions. Individual schedules provision of the studio is often very late - nightlife in working time was perfectly suited to the more diverse sides. Most of the time, El'Blaszczyk proceeded himself to his own sound recordings. A good disciple of his elder's electro acousticians, he tracked his sounds, its unwavering Nagra shoulder.

DILLON Live At Haus Der Berliner Festspiele (Jewel Case) CD
Jewel case CD version. Includes 12-page poster booklet. Dillon presents Live At Haus Der Berliner Festspiele. Recorded at the extraordinary Berlin theater, Haus der Berliner Festspiele. Born in Brazil, raised in Cologne and based in Berlin, Dominique Dillon de Byington, aka Dillon, has always had a clear vision of her art. Her two previous albums, This Silence Kills (BPC 244CD/LP, 2011) and The Unknown (BPC 285CD/LP, 2014), told a coherent story and together carried her live shows. Her live shows demonstrate a magical interchange between the dark-melodic songs of both albums. In 2015, she developed a unique concert with a six-piece women's choir for the Berlin Foreign Affairs Festival. The choir accompanied her and Tamer Fahri Özgönenc, her collaborator and co-producer of her first two albums, in the live performance at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele, held in July 2015. "I felt the need to work with vocals and to create an additional layer that breathes in this space between the electronic music and myself. I was very attracted to this idea, so Tamer and I wrote and arranged the choir parts together," Dillon explains. The choir injects a new physical layer into her music, which is dominated by piano and electronic sounds, and her own voice dances longingly in this space. The live recording of the concert reveals just how naturally this new element slots into her dramatically minimal music. "When I started writing my new album The Unknown, I already knew it would be a continuation of This Silence Kills in terms of both music and content. Now the two albums are being brought together as a release, as well as in the live shows. For me, this album could be called 'This Silence Kills The Unknown' ".

SCHWABINGGRAD BALLETT/ARRIVATI Beyond Welcome! CD
Beyond Welcome! is an album of music that didn't exist before, made by people whose collaboration is altogether rather improbable, developed out of political-performative interventions in public spaces, and created against the backdrop of the recent migration movements to Europe. Beyond Welcome! is about border regimes, jazz, post-punk, electronic Afro-kraut music, the Germans and the non-Germans, about an encounter that goes beyond the "welcome culture", about staying strong without legal papers, about social dances and NATO, about Yoruba gods, about Eurocentrism, about ingenious dilettantes and the impossibilities of even imagining a different world, let alone wanting to push for it. Schwabinggrad Ballett, a political and performance collective that was founded in Hamburg at the beginning of the new millennium, began, in the spring of 2014, to work with Lampedusa activists living in Hamburg - a conglomerate of people from different African countries who fled to Germany prior to the outbreak of war in Libya, and who are still fighting for their right to stay. Raw musical ideas arose from their various performances and political interventions in Vienna, Hamburg, Berlin, Bremen and other cities. These ideas created a framework around agitprop didactic plays and confronted the demonstrators and demonstrations with experimental dance music played on instruments that were mobile enough to be carried on the street - old drum kit parts, analog synthesizers, melodica, xylophone, congas, a nineties sampler or the Böhmat, a Brechtian organ machine from the '70s. Much like Schwabinggrad Ballett's debut in 2006 (STAUB 061CD/LP), this album was created in a commune-like camp atmosphere that brings to mind the marathon sessions in Sun Ra's Sun Studio in New York or Can in their studio in Weilerswist. In the winter of 2015/16, Schwabinggrad and Arrivati, a performance group that arose from the Lampedusa movement, rented a converted barn in Gut Reichenow in Brandenburg. After seven days and nights, 16 songs were finished, ten of which made it onto Beyond Welcome!. Three further tracks were recorded at the Art Blakey Studio in St. Pauli, Hamburg. Schwabinggrad Ballett and Arrivati are: Dieudonné Eboth, Jeano Elong, Ted Gaier, Charalambos Ganotis, Sylvie Kretzschmar, Latoya Manly-Spain, Heiko Marn, Heike Nöth, Peter Ott, Liz Rech, Christine Schulz, Oumar Traore, Margarita Tsomou, Christoph Twickel, Asuquo Udo and numerous other people who took part in their interventions, performances and concerts over the last years.

VON DEYEN, ADELBERT Sternzeit LP
LP version. Bureau B present a reissue of Adelbert Von Deyen's debut album Sternzeit, originally released in 1978. Adelbert Von Deyen is a protagonist of the so-called Berlin School (Berliner Schule) of electronic music. On his debut album, he takes his time to develop sound structures, often drifting, floating blissfully into tonal interference. The listener also requires time and patience, but will be rewarded with a Zen-like state of contemplation. Adelbert Von Deyen's musical backstory follows a less than typical path. He recalls: "To make the best use of my evenings, I finally bought a second-hand synthesizer, various electronic keyboard instruments and a tape machine, plus a few bits and pieces you need to make music. If I didn't have enough money, I asked the bank. During the day I worked as a re-toucher for a newspaper and in the evenings, I composed my celestial electronic sounds, invariably deep into the night. It took me around eight months to finish my first compositions. I made tape copies which I sent out to various record companies. I struck lucky straight away. Sky Records in Hamburg were interested in my music and my first record was granted a worldwide release in 1978. I called it Sternzeit and I painted the cover myself." Founded by Günter Körber in 1975, the label had already hosted acclaimed releases from electronic and krautrock stars like Michael Rother, Hans-Joachim Roedelius and even Brian Eno. A decent level of public interest was thus guaranteed. Sternzeit was one of the early releases on the label. In principle, many elements on this first album reappear on the two which followed: rich analog layers, the swirling winds of the ARP Odyssey, masterful synth effects sprinkled so delicately. The second side of the record is devoted to a single track which is based on an incessant organ tone and played with vibrato, engendering a hypnotic sense of weightlessness. Keyboarders often taped down keys on their organs or synthesizers to create such effects back in the day. When Adelbert Von Deyen performs, he sits down with his back to the audience, focused on his arsenal of equipment. The way he has unreservedly followed his passions for music and artistic creativity speaks volumes about his free-thinking nature. Adelbert Von Deyen mixed and produced this album in his own small studio on a Revox A77 tape recorder.

VA Cocoon Compilation P CD
Cocoon Recordings presents P. Loaded with power and purity, the latest edition of the Cocoon Compilation series offers a great selection of crazy and kicking techno tunes. Mirko Loko is in control for the beginning. His track "Artificiel" is energetic, crazy and minimalistic with destroyed digital sound fragments. Wouter de Moor follows with his "Tesla Coil", a speedy acid tune with a simple structure and crazy hi-hats, sounding almost like an old steam locomotive. Einzelkind & Robin Scholz present their Rhythm Factory project on "N.2guts". Another kickin' acid-tune, full of power with an energy loaded forward boost. Slightly slower than Wouter de Moor but certainly with a similar vibe. Redshape follows the red acid-tip of the previous tracks with "The Choice" adding a bit of a Detroit and Dopplereffekt vibe. Swedish La Fleur contributes her track "Chemicality" which is nothing less than another great techno anthem. "Porridge" by Alex Smoke sees him doing the shuffle and creating massive musical tension by using cool but insane sounds. "The Whip" by Alex Bau is big time Chicago-techno with a strong DJ Sneak/Blu funk feeling. Hypnotic, oppressive and with no frills. Dustin Zahn's "Sun Breaker" is powerful, strong and masculine. The initial hypnotic loop aesthetics progresses fairly quickly in a massive production full of powerful synths and freaked out sounds. "Rising Lines" by Ilario Alicante delivers another strong, deep techno monster and follows the course set by Dustin Zahn: Big string sounds and twisted harmonies makes "Rising Lines" an epic techno cinema highlight. Josh Wink's "Bouyantly Grounded" is a fat fish, pushing the speakers in a powerful manner and turning each festival and each open air into another unforgettable event. "You Fill Me" by Jacob Korn follows Josh Wink and adds a bucket of nice musical emotions. Korn designs an amazing creation full of gentle harmonies and profound melodies - his contribution deserves to be labeled as "techno music". Any sunrise and any after-hour will be better with "You Fill Me". The last track "All This For A Jump" by Atelier Francesco is cool but kickin' with '80s retro sounds meeting a very unique electronic funk feeling - the captivating vocals make the picture complete.

VA 10 Years Diynamic 2CD
DIY: A simple idea, rooted in the wish to change the predominant principles and to do something in one's own way. For 10 years now, Diynamic - the artist collective surrounding label father Solomun - acts true to this calling. Since 2006, it's all been about releasing, partying, thinking ahead and doing it yourself. Born in the heart of Hamburg's St. Pauli neighborhood, it is now home in virtually every corner of the world. The beginning of the adventure dates back even further, to the year 2003, when the clique around Solomun introduced their DIY party series in Hamburg. 2006 saw the founding of the music label Diynamic, followed by the opening of infamous EGO club in Hamburg's red light district, St. Pauli. in 2009. This was soon succeeded by festivals on multiple continents, worldwide Diynamic showcases and several successful residencies on Ibiza. How do you commemorate such a special anniversary? The year 2016 already saw the novel 10-Years-Diynamic parties in multiple metropolises around the globe - so now it's time for some music. The 10 Years Diynamic compilation is a collection of 13 unreleased original productions by Solomun (feat. Liu Bei), Adriatique, H.O.S.H., Kollektiv Turmstrasse, Stimming, Karmon, NTFO, Thyladomid, Ost & Kjex, Magdalena, Johannes Brecht, Undercatt and Lehar. But it's not just all four-to-the-floor: the styles of the tracks are as diverse as the artists on Diynamic, as diverse as the members of a family. So, no more words - hear it for yourself. Double CD version comes in a six panel digipak.

SCIENTIST MEETS TED SIROTA'S HEAVYWEIGHT DUB, THE The Scientist Meets Ted Sirota's Heavyweight Dub 2LP+CD
The debut album from Chicago band Ted Sirota's Heavyweight Dub was recorded, mixed, and mastered by the legendary "Dub Chemist" Overton H. Brown, aka The Scientist. Sirota, a veteran of the Chicago music scene, decided to address his 30+ year love for Jamaican music by putting this new band together in early 2013. Only weeks after starting the band, Sirota had a chance encounter with one of his biggest influences, The Scientist. With this band, Sirota and cohorts hope to bring back some of the serious musicianship that was emblematic of the "golden age" of reggae. Through his original music, and arrangements, Sirota hopes to creatively pay respect to legends like Tommy McCook, Cedric Brooks, Ernest Ranglin, Jackie Mittoo, Winston Wright, Leroy Sibbles, Roots Radics, Soul Syndicate, The Upsetters, The Revolutionaries and many others, while still keeping an eye on the future. TRIO MANDILI With Love CD
With Love is the debut album from Trio Mandili, a trio of young ladies from Georgia in the Caucasus area. Being into singing, folk songs, and filming, one day the three girls made a recording of the love song "Apareka" and the video gained them three million views on Youtube. This is pure folk, three ladies singing to the sound of classic Eurasian stringed instruments, such as the panduri and tschonguri, long necked lutes. The all acoustic instrumentation can be considered the soil from which the voices of the three lead singers rise, the instrumental lines going deeper than that of course. It might sound like a miracle that this music gained so much attention in a time of flat-ass, streamline plastic pop, but if you take a closer listen to With Love, it's not hard to realize that it does justice to its title. The melodies sung by the girls grab the heart immediately and then the soul. This is a passionate brand of eastern, Caucasian folk and has an enchanting approach within the melodies. The girls sing with a very determined expression in their performance. Trio Mandili seems to be much more than just a group of young ladies playing music. There is a kind of mystical atmosphere rising from this compilation of simple love songs coming straight from the heart. The spiritual vibe should not be underestimated. The compositions themselves may be rather simple, as it is the fact with most classic folk tunes from any region or century are, but the emotional depth is amazing and the performance is utterly tight. The vocal performances are uniquely impressive.

VIDEODRONES Mondo Ferox LP
Danish synth duo Videdrones are all about simultaneously channeling of the vibes of maestros, ranging from the epic choirs of Popol Vuh or Fabio Frizzi through the smooth gliding arpeggios of Tangerine Dream or Giorgio Moroder, even into Goblin or Morricone at their most abstract. But there's more to it than mere tribute. Mondo Ferox is the kind of album where electronic instruments take on a life of their own - Constantly in flux, changing direction and pace like that of the lives at the bottom of the sea. It's like a constant overture. These are sounds that the listener knows, but they're turning themselves inside out, bleeding into each other and losing themselves in the flow - Favoring emotion and impulse over logic and structure. Rather than repeating what's already been seen and heard, Videodrones re-melts the voices of cinema into something yet to be imagined.

ERGODOS MUSICIANS Songs CD
2014 release. Ergodos Musicians present Songs. Working with the members of Ergodos Musicians, composers Garrett Sholdice and Benedict Schlepper-Connolly arrange, re-compose, weave and stitch material drawn from the songs they love, spanning over 800 years of music, from John Dowland and Vivaldi to Steve Earle, Richard Thompson and The xx. Working closely with vocalist Michelle O'Rourke, reed player Seán Mac Erlaine and cellist Kate Ellis, they celebrate the way a melody or a lyric can live in memory, heart and limb. A 13th century hymn becomes a spacious meditation over a drone. An opera aria by Vivaldi becomes understated jazz. Sholdice takes a fragment of contemporary Irish composer Donnacha Dennehy's Yeats setting, "The White Birds" and transforms the original, re-imagining the material as a forgotten folk-song, very different from Dennehy's taut rhythmic landscape. Schlepper-Connolly's shimmering take on the traditional song "I Am Weary Of Lying Alone" becomes a vehicle for an incisive, biting sax solo from Seán Mac Erlaine. The devotional melancholy of Richard Thompson's "Beat The Retreat" is complimented by an hauntingly spare version of Dowland's "Weep You No More, Sad Fountains". American alt-country singer Steve Earle's "Goodbye" becomes a mercurial lament in Schlepper-Connolly's hands, while Sholdice's transcription of a Javanese gamelan "Ladrang" is elegant in its simplicity. The album closes with a tender, intimate re-coloring of "Angels" by UK indie trio The xx. "Nothing could better exemplify the continued vitality of the song tradition. Four stars." -- "CD Choice", The Irish Times.

Dancing & Romancing is a snapshot of the imprint from 2011 to 2016, charting its story from contender to heavyweight in stunning fashion. From breaking Claptone as an unknown artist to helping him become one of the biggest-selling names in dance music to introducing the world to other major players like Adana Twins, Doctor Dru and Joyce Muniz, he has unearthed a staggering amount of talent in such a short space of time. Browse through the label's 150+ releases and there is an impressive plethora of acclaimed names from across the house, techno and disco sphere: Metronomy, Modeselektor, Siriusmo, Munk, Julio Bashmore, Michael Mayer, Fort Romeau, John Tejada, Cosmin TRG, Locked Groove, Deetron, Acid Pauli - the list goes on and on. Dancing & Romancing showcases some of the label's high points from the last half decade, attempting to provide a summary of what Exploited is all about. From resolute club bangers to tracks that sound as good on a home stereo as they do on the dancefloor, it's a compilation that reminds us that dance music is bigger and further-reaching than it's ever been. Big vocal anthems like Claptone's "No Eyes (feat. Jaw)" and Murphy Jax's "Let's Get To It (feat. Mike Dunn)" sit alongside charismatic instrumentals such as dreamy Cocolores's "Vox" and Urulu's rolling "1991". Sample-heavy classics like Adana Twins's "Strange" and Doctor Dru's "Voice Of Dru" contrast with the cutting-edge freshness of Light Year's "Never Know" and Sirens Of Lesbos's "7 Years In Tibet". The excellent vocalists that have graced the label are represented too, from Anabel Englund's seductive tones alongside Human Life on "El Diablo" to Daudi Matsiko's haunting delivery with Kyodai on "Houston In The Blind". SELDA Selda LP
2016 repress; originally reissued in 2006. Bearing all the aesthetic watermarks of a private-press country LP, Selda Ba?can's 1976 debut long-player is a stunning work of space-age Anatolian electronic, progressive protest-psych-folk-funk-rock; a delectable hybrid concoction, presented with the utmost authenticity and conviction, which has never been replicated or equaled in the decades since its recording. When Selda first released her long-awaited LP (the first of two confusingly eponymous titles released the same year), she was enduring/enjoying her halcyon time as one of Turkey's most politically outspoken popular folk singers. In the previous decade she had made a household name for herself as a traditional Anadolu protest singer with a spectacular emotive vocal capacity (for idle argument's sake, begging comparison to a Turkish Joan Baez). A figurehead and poetic driving force for a radical generation of politically motivated, creative revolutionaries, she sang raw, stripped-down folk songs with a yearning for political change and a heart-wrenching earnestness. On her debut LP, in a match made in psychedelic heaven, Selda's radical prose fuses with equally radical musical gestures from some of the most lauded musical mavericks, including Anadolu beat combo Mo?ollar (also known to a growing French audience as Les Mogol), popular backing band Dada?lar under the guidance of Anatolian rock stalwart Arif Sa?, and master electronic producer and pioneer Zafer Dilek. The bands were assembled at multiple sessions at Yeni Studios and the über-legendary Studio Elektronik, where the record was finally completed and mastered. Released in 1976 to equal parts critical acclaim and skepticism, the album smashed boundaries both lyrically and musically. It begs comparison to the second LP by post-folk sibling trio 3 Hür-El (GUESS 056LP), who used a balance of electronically treated saz and proto-polyphonic synthesizers to similar effect (exemplified here on tracks such as "Gitme" and "Yaz Gazeteci Yaz"). However, the fact that Selda was one of the few female voices to adopt the use of such cutting-edge techniques puts the LP in a league of its very own. Anatolian progressive rock has since gained popularity among DJs, producers, and record collectors as an unrivalled source for unique sounds rarely found in other genres of international music, and the artists involved in the recording of this LP, all of whom continued to record radical and experimental music, are considered the cream of the crop among Eastern psych aficionados. Includes two bonus tracks from the album sessions.

GOOGOOSH Googoosh LP
2016 repress; originally released in 2011. Googoosh collects some of the rarest records from the East's best-kept secret songbird, Googoosh, including forgotten B-sides and mythical LP tracks. Despite her reputation as one of the most legendary Iranian pop stars, Faegheh Atashin aka Googoosh is also the performer of some of the rarest heart-melting pop music in the world, originally pressed on the diminishing vinyl format. Her 1970s songs and performances were banned after the Iranian Revolution of 1979, resulting in her records being forbidden, hidden, and destroyed. Some of Googoosh's most famous songs have since become anthemic among global Iranian communities, but in a darker contrast, dozens of 45 B-sides and album tracks remain only as distant and nonexistent memories in the minds of the most devout fans and fastidious vinyl librarians. Googoosh focuses on a handful of these lesser-spotted tracks -- the ones that didn't get away. Googoosh's voice conveys an urgency and yearning that is arguably unrivalled under the often-disposable femme-pop umbrella. Mid-tempo pulsating pop paeans awash with expertly orchestrated strings (akin to those of some of the most intense European film composers) provide the backdrop for songs of unrequited love and poetic premonitions of impeding cultural heartbreak. Other tracks combine unlikely jazz, bossa, and early disco influences, which inadvertently incited political paranoia from the era's brooding anti-pop regime. Boasting deep roots in the history of Persian poetic verse and indelible Arabic songcraft, these lost tracks from the artist known among Farsi-speaking fans as "Iran's Daughter" have most certainly earned a place in the hearts of all outernational music lovers.

CASA, DANIELA Sovrapposizione Di Immagini LP
2016 repress. In an alternate universe, the Rome-born female synthesist Daniela Casa would be a household name. A genuine pioneer of experimental pop music, abstract electronics, giallo jazz, and even heavy drone rock jams, her elusive and infectious music joins the dots and loops between other Italian female electronic composers such as Giulia De Mutiis (later Giulia Alessandroni), Doris Norton and Suzanne Ciani, while retaining one of the most individualistic and diverse composing styles of an advanced mechanical musician regardless of their nationality or gender. This LP compiles, for the first time, a multifarious selection of previously commercially unavailable instrumental music composed at her home studio in the late '70s before her untimely death at the age of 42. Originally designed for use in radio, film, TV and other industry-specific applications, these seldom-heard selections combine ingenious homemade and hi-tech disciplines, providing scores for Italian thrillers, nature documentaries, educational projects, and commercial sound installations. Mastered from the vaults of the sought-after Deneb/Flirt/Canopo library labels (home to some of the rarest records by Fabio Frizzi, Giuliano "Raskovich" Sorgini, Gerardo Iacoucci, Alessandro "Braen" Alessandroni, amongst others) these rare tracks reveal Daniela Casa in her most fertile environment (composing as a young mother) in both a solo capacity and alongside incredible Italian session musicians, often sharing release schedules and track lists with her maverick maestro husband Remigio Ducross. These multi-layered musical images remain as vibrant and authentic today as they did 35 years ago. Close your eyes and unravel the Sovrapposizione Di Immagini.

PRURIENT Pleasure Ground 2LP
One of Prurient's most captivating raids on the borderlands of power noise and symphonic doom rears its furious head once again for this gatefold reissue on Hospital Productions, ten years on from its original release on double tape and then as a single vinyl pressing for the legendary Load Records in 2007. Pleasure Ground stands as a key part of Prurient's golden quadrant alongside The History Of Aids (2002), Black Vase (2005) and Cocaine Death (HOS 232CD/HOS 410LP, 2008), its immolating rage renders Ian Dominick Fernow at an early crest of his energies, consolidating the hi-pitch intensity and bile of his idols, Whitehouse, with the majestic, meditative inspirations of black metal and a more personalized bloodlust for unheimlich synth tones and pulsating electronic undercurrents. Its four long tracks are riven with the paradoxes that make Prurient's music so compelling and practically a genre unto itself, meting out a sound in "Earthworks / Buried In Secret" that's simultaneously nerve-gnawing yet bleakly tender, or weighing up caustic harshness with a melodic vulnerability in "Apple Tree Victim" that appeals far beyond the bombed-out no-man's land of pure noise to intersect with the entrails of EBM in the raging but poised thunder of "Military Road" - one of his finest moments, bar none - and cold-wave pop and fetishistic synth themes in "Outdoorsman / Indestructible". If you're willing to bite down, you will find a depth of bittersweet flavor submerged beneath the tidal waves of white noise filled with nuance and vulnerability, slowly dragging you into the abyss. Ultimately though, there's no mistaking that in the end Pleasure Ground is just unflinchingly fucking heavy. Housed in a deluxe, reverse-board gatefold sleeve. Mastered and cut by Barry Grint at Alechemy.

Hand Made Illusions is a vague ranting by a lone individual who relinquishes social impositions and reinstates himself into the cosmos. DAKOTA SUITE/VAMPILLIA The Sea Is Never Full CD
The origin of this collaboration began two months prior to the Fukushima disaster in Japan. Dakota Suite had been touring Japan with their friends from the Japanese band called Vampillia and had been in several coastal locations in Wakayama as well as places near to Fukushima. The tsunami was very upsetting for Chris Hooson and David Buxton from Dakota Suite who then set about making music to reflect this overwhelming sadness and loss for Japan with a desire to reflect the phases of the disaster, the rising violent seas, the destructive power and loss preceding sorrow at the devastation which followed. They approached Vampillia to work on these somber reflective songs for the sea. Vampillia is next alternative music from Osaka. Guitar, noise guitar, bass, piano, classical strings, Velladon on Opera, Mongoloid on the dark metal vocals alongside twin drummers Talow the Tornado (Nice View, Turtle Island) and Tatsuya Yoshida (Ruins). From this lineup of ten (sometimes more) comes experimental and beautiful dark music. They have previously collaborated with acts such as µ-Ziq, Merzbow, Nadja and Lustmord. Their intense experimental style is the perfect fusion with the Dakota Suite aesthetic. Chris Hooson was haunted by images of floating pieces of wood which had once been someone's ancient dwelling. The music Dakota Suite & Vampillia have recorded on The Sea is Never Full seeks to provide a mechanism to deal with this pain cathartically. Various short pieces were passed between Dakota Suite and Vampillia, who added strings and the distinctive throat singing of Mongoloid. Japanese throat singing speaks to an ancient method, called rekukkara. It is tonal rather than melodic. As Hooson says "It seemed an appropriate way to convey the sadness we felt at the horror of Fukushima, which knows no words to express it accurately." After basic recording had been completed, David Buxton, took apart every note of the music and created a two-part suite. This had a seismic shift in the project, the music is presented in that form. Together with Vampillia they have sculpted a truly epic record spanning musical styles from ambient and experimental to post-rock and neo-classical.

PAINKILLER Execution Ground 2LP
The seminal 1994 double album Execution Ground, by the original Painkiller with the line-up of Bill Laswell, John Zorn and Mick Harris on vinyl for the first time. When Painkiller started in 1991, their first two albums Guts Of A Virgin (1991) and Buried Secrets (1992) (both released on extreme metal label Earache) were heavy attacks blending grindcore and free jazz that brought together the musical backgrounds of the three protagonists: drummer Mick Harris had just left grindcore legend Napalm Death, John Zorn explored new extremities with his Naked City project while Bill Laswell had as a member of roaring free jazz quartet Last Exit (with Peter Brötzmann, Sonny Sharrock, Ronald Shannon Jackson) proven that he was not only a visionary producer but also an accomplished bassist. But it is their 1994 double album Execution Ground remains the opus magnum of the brilliant trio: Zorn's unmistakable shrieking saxophone, Harris's pounding drums and Laswell's growling sub-bass lines were given heavy mixing desk treatment, resulting in extended tracks that are no less intense than their early works but display the full range of the musicians's skills. Avant-jazz, grindcore, dub and ambient melt into eerie tracks of haunting atmospheres - even more so in the "ambient" versions of the second disc. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at D&M Berlin. Available here as a double 180 gram vinyl. Includes a download code and insert. Edition of 500.

VERNON, MARK Lend An Ear, Leave A Word LP
"Kye is proud to present Lend An Ear, Leave A Word the new LP from Glasgow's Mark Vernon. 'The pieces composed for this album combine field recordings of contemporary Lisbon with found tape recordings from the past; reel-to-reel tapes, micro-cassettes and Dictaphones collected from the Feira de Ladra market, a popular and lively flea market in the Alfarma district. Each tape recording is an audio snapshot of a specific time; a family album in sound, a musical performance, a compilation of treasured music, or even just the fun of playing around with a tape recorder captured for posterity. Every thoughtless edit or push of the record button teleports us to a different time and place. The musical material extracted from the tapes is also an evocative signifier that locates it within a specific era. The interesting thing is how the tapes accumulate different strata of time even within a single side. There are consecutive chronological recordings but also sequences with unexpected breakthroughs where the user has carelessly fast-forwarded through the tape, randomly 'dropping-in' new recordings. These accidental edits create instantaneous new collages of sounds and voices. I have endeavored to retain the essence of these unintentional edits and unexpected outbursts in the pieces I have assembled here. The noisy whir and clicking of the various tape mechanisms is evident on many of the found recordings. As the material is sped up and slowed down it acts as an internal clock, a continuous, steady marker of time, almost like the second hand of a timepiece. All of the pieces contained here within explore one particular environment - the city of Lisbon. Field recordings by their very nature are time-based but the introduction of found tapes into the mix expands the time-scale of these studies from just the short period spent in the city making recordings, backwards to possibly forty or more years in the past. It is a portrait in time *and* place, an archaeology of sound. The result of the audio flotsam and jetsam washed up on the shores of low commerce in the flea markets of Lisbon.' --Mark Vernon. Lend An Ear, Leave A Word arrives in a full color matte stock sleeve with insert and download card that features additional pieces left off the LP due to time constraints. Mastered by Jason Lescalleet in an edition of 400."

COMET IS COMING, THE Channel The Spirits LP+CD
"Channel the Spirits is a starburst galaxy, a journey through the outer reaches of the cosmos. Over twelve tracks, our fearless stargazers evoke the ghosts of bold experimentalists such as Sun Ra, Funkadelic and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, reanimate them through 21st century technology and send them off hot-stepping into the greatest party the universe has seen. Keyboards, drums and electronics shimmer and soothe one moment and wig-flip wayward the next, while saxophonist King Shabaka squeezes sounds that echo like the exaltations of visionary voyagers drifting through interplanetary space and time. They shift from the elegiac and the experimental into iridescent molten jazz and full-on intergalactic groove mode. Dusted in cosmic magic, Channel the Spirits is more than an album--it is a séance, a reckoning, a prophecy, a mission. A trans-dimensional journey. The Comet Is Coming. Look busy."

YOUNGE PRESENTS, ADRIAN The Electronique Void: Black Noise CD
"This, too, is a story about control. It's a manual, maybe half Rosetta Stone, half bird guide. It was made the way they made electronic music in the good old days, all analog everything, right after synthesizers shrunk to a manageable size and you didn't have to trek down to a university to use one anymore. Hard-earned. Tastes different. Our parents' electronic. And its subject is staying together, that thing we thought was their province. It's about trying to fix what hurts. It's about knowing better. Black Noise is men talking to men about women; Lemonade is a woman talking to women about men, and they both orbit around a failure we take for granted like the sun: loving you is complicated. It's a skill; we forgot. Adrian Younge calls The Electronique Void an academic album, by which he means it is both instructional and informational. There's a problem at the heart of it, a woman who's been told that she's loved, but she doesn't recognize that, can't feel it, may have heard it all before, may be worrying about the wrong things. Jack Waterson, long a guitarist in Younge's band, plays the role of narrator, sounding professorial and rather superior as he lays out for the woman where she's erred. That vocoder you hear is Adrian, talking to her on a subterranean level, the way an artist must. There's a strong sense of rules here, a prescription and a presumption that there is an agreed upon way to do it, and there is also a wrong way, or at least a way that won't work. And the fact is, as didactic as that sounds, it might be the truth. Maybe everybody who's alone can be cured. The discourse on the album is the kind of thing that happens when you go blonde and then you can't keep 'em off you. These truths are cold and hard, and our hero begrudges the well-meaning advice being rained down upon her as any independent woman would. The science of love, its formulas and if-then constraints, causal relationships and observable properties, is best taught experientially, but learning it hurts so, so bad. Music, especially electronic music, reliant as it is on abstraction and unrepentant as it is about hijacking your physiological responses to tempo and rhythm and dynamics, is a way to get there without going through it. Electronic music as practiced and developed by pioneers like Dick Hyman and Raymond Scott and Wendy Carlos is precise and intentional. In making his first electronic album, Younge took his cues from them, reminding a contemporary audience what a synthesizer, deep in its heart, really could be. The lady of The Electronique Void, only ever seen through a man's eyes, who's being told what to do by him, sounds trapped by her history and by her position, her ancestors' trauma echoing through her lineage and booming out of her as a phobia, distrust, misapprehension, rational response to a fucked up situation. Waterson's text here seems to say that if his character could go back in time, catch her before the damage was done, she would be able to love. And that's reasonable. Don't get hooked. Don't do wifey shit for a fuck boy. Don't let it go to your head, no. It's also possible he has no idea what he's talking about. The lessons for men in The Electronique Void are unspoken but plain as day. This music is an urgent tutorial. Adrian Younge looks at us and sees the front line of a crisis, something we only have time to triage right now. This isn't romantic and it isn't about settling down. This is the fight of our lives: how to love."

THOR & FRIENDS Thor & Friends CD
"Thor & Friends is the eponymous full length debut from the avant-chamber ensemble formed by polymath percussionist Thor Harris. It was recorded in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and produced by Jeremy Barnes and Heather Trost from A Hawk & A Hacksaw and Deerhoof's John Dieterich. The three core members of the band are Peggy Ghorbani on marimba, Sarah 'Goat' Gautier on marimba, vibraphone, xylophone, organ, voice, mellotron and piano, and Harris on sundry percussion and wind instruments including some of his own devising. The band was inaugurated after Harris toured for five years as the percussionist of iconic avant-rock ensemble Swans. As a vehicle for experimentation with American Minimalism with a rotating cast of Austin-based musicians, Harris draws on composers including Terry Riley and Steve Reich, but also such diverse influences as Brian Eno, Aphex Twin, Moondog and The Necks; the album centers around a polyrhythmic core of mallet-struck instruments -- primarily marimba, xylophone and vibraphone. Circling these core motifs are shifting streams of everything from processed pedal steel and analog synthesizer to violin, viola, stand-up bass, clarinet, duduk and oboe. By rooting their art in both improvisation and the involvement of neighbors and friends in their process, Thor & Friends embody utopian optimism, making use of what and whom is around at any given moment to make music with."

ELEKTRO GUZZI Clones CD
Elektro Guzzi, holding their position as the leading "real" techno live band, present Clones. Literary all the Granny Smith apple trees grown today, from Uruguay to Hokaido, are clones from Mrs. Smith's original tree in Sydney. Bananas, oranges, watermelons, garlic and other fruits of daily delight are routinely replicated without any input of external ideas - i.e., they are cloned. There is no general ethical or aesthetic decision to be formed about clones, since you have already imbibed them ever since your first bite. Thus, you are not in a neutral or otherwise preliminary position, but already involved, knee-deep. It may not be a coincidence that the first mammals, warm-blooded egg-layers and small marsupials, date almost exactly to the period of the first flowers, evolving some 125 million years ago. Quick-thinking, vegetable eating mammals provide a most striking example of cooperation in evolution, as their interest in plant foods led them to become well-fed. A bond has been formed. Seedless plants, like banana and oranges, have made a most remarkable dispersal strategy: season after season, human growers clone them. The plants are perpetuated because they taste so good. And that's about it. Much has been said about Elektro Guzzi's aptitude in transcending their instrumental sources towards techno of unlikely beauty, pristine consistency and razor-sharp definition. It tastes good, and thus they have decided to clone themselves. Elektro Guzzi plow through their own fertile ground of ideas and sprout structures, textures and gestures into a dizzying array of new offerings. Yet the tunnel vision of the singular point of origin of all tracks makes it smack even more, because there's never too much of a great thing.

GOLDMANN, STEFAN A1 Tools 12"
Rough techno versions, derived from Stefan Goldmann's synth-heavy soundtrack for the Swiss documentary, A1 (2016). Five cuts remixed into the mighty 4/4 grid (mostly). "Inward Slope" features a warped beat layout and wave-table splashes, sounding like a weeping robot fighting with a cat. Free-wheeling hardware synthesis and heavy-handed beats line up for concrete-blasting impact on "A-Drive" and "Constructor". "Roadside Lot" is a soothing ambient FM tech tool. "Spikes" is a looser affair, around a scintillating analog synth riff.

VA Cologne Curiosities: The Unknown Krautrock Underground 1972-1976 2LP
Double LP version. The Nuggets (1972) of krautrock, Cologne Curiosities collects for the first time on vinyl, all the otherwise unpublished/un-reissued material that originally appeared on the three Unknown Deutschland - The Krautrock Archive CDs released on Virgin in 1996. These CD only releases were originally compiled by Trevor Manwaring (Paratactile, Impetus, Virgin, Harmonia Mundi) from tapes supplied to him by Toby Robinson. Toby, aka The Mad Twiddler, aka Genius P. Orridge, is well-known to krautrock collectors as one of a number of engineers working at Stockhausen's WDR and Dierks Studio in Cologne in the mid-1970s, where he assisted on recordings by many famous kraut bands such as Can, Birth Control, Mythos and Dzyan. The recordings included here were made between 1972 and 1976 using studios in and around Cologne, produced by Toby Robinson for his own amusement. Bands would come in for practice sessions, to record demos, and during slack periods, impromptu jams would happen. Most of these sessions were recorded by Toby, and they feature Toby himself plus a revolving cast of friends and musicians (some of them apparently big kraut names under pseudonym). Including lost-in-time bands/studio projects like Astral Army, Fuerrote, Spirulina and Baal among others, the music here ranges from killer proto-new wave kraut psych to wild space rock, proto-ambient electronic, dark psychedelia and raw kosmische sounds with lots of analog synths/Moog. It was during that time in Cologne, that Toby, along with Fluxus artist Robin Page, gave birth to the mysterious and controversial Pyramid label, for which these tracks were originally made for. 24-bit domain remaster from the original master tapes. Insert with detailed liner notes by Alan Freeman (Ultima Thule, The Crack In The Cosmic Egg (2007)). Also features: Chronos, Neil Andersen and Ten To Zen. RIYL: Pink Floyd, Gila, Cluster, Hawkwind, Ash Ra Tempel, Amon Düül II, Popol Vuh, Cosmic Jokers.

ANTUNES, JORGE Musica Eletronica LP
Considered the first electro-acoustic/electronic album made in Brazil, Mental Experience presents the first vinyl reissue of Jorge Antunes's Música Eletrônica, originally released in 1975. During the early '60s, Antunes built his own components for making electronic music: theremin, sawtooth oscillator, a spring-reverb device, a frequency filter. The works on Música Eletrônica were recorded at Antunes's home studio and at the Electronic Music Laboratory of the Institute Torcuato Di Tella, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. On "Valsa Sideral" (1962), Antunes uses artificial echo and reverberation by feedback between the recording heads, creating the first Brazilian work consisting only of electronic tones. "Auto-Retrato Sobre Paisaje Porteño" (1969/1970) is an amazing piece of early turntablism on which Antunes "samples" an old tango vinyl record, using it as a loop and for sound effects/manipulation, and mixes it with electronic sound effects and cut voice manipulation/sound poetry. The version included here features the audio collage which Antunes created to criticize the military regimes from Brazil and Argentine. This version wasn't used on the original LP to avoid any problems with censorship. "Cinta Cita" (1969) was the first piece recorded by Antunes at a professional studio. Pure electronic sounds and pulsating rhythms use filtered noise and synthetic sounds created by additive synthesis. "Contrapunctus Contra Contrapunctus" (1962) was created using tape splicing, micro-assemblies and tape manipulation. "Historia de un Pueblo por Nacer ou Carta Abierta a Vassili Vassilikos y a todos los Pesimistas" (1970) with its sinusoidal sounds and low frequencies, was inspired by the plot of the novel and film Z (1969) by Vassili Vassilikos. In the original audio of this work, Antunes used a quotation from the International Communist anthem. To avoid censorship problems, he cut that passage for inclusion on the original LP. The uncensored, original version is presented here. In 1970, Antunes did research at the Institute of Sonology at the University of Utrecht with a specialization in Computer Music (working with the Electrologia X-8 computer). During the '70s he worked under the guidance of Pierre Schaeffer and Iannis Xenakis amongst others. Antunes is presently the Director of the Electroacoustic Music Studio of the University of Brasilia and President of the Brazilian Society for Electroacoustic Music. Included in this LP is an insert with liner notes and photos. Master tape sound. Mandatory for anyone into Pierre Henry, Iannis Xenakis, Pierre Schaeffer, Louis & Bebe Baron, Ihlan Mimaroglu, Morton Subotnick, Stockhausen.

"Back again on vinyl where it belongs, MF Doom's 1999 classic Operation: Doomsday is now presented on a premium grade LP, with audio re-mastered from the original Fondle'Em Records release, and a poster of the album cover art! Underneath his mysterious metal mask, MF Doom hides the cachet underground legends are made of. After KMD (his first group)'s 1994 sophomore album Bl_ck B_st_rds was shelved by Elektra in 1994 and his blood brother Subroc (one half of the sibling rap duo) passed away, surviving frontman Zev Love X mutated into the MC Avenger known as MF Doom and the rap world is better for it. This 19-cut deep album is ridiculously dope, in a bizarro Ol' Dirty Bastard kind of way. Doom sounds either high or drunk on most of the tracks, his self-produced beats are gritty, and his rhyme styles are almost indecipherable. On arguably the best track, 'Rhymes Like Dimes,' Doom weaves some pointed lyrics through his abstract wordplay, spitting 'only in America could you find a way to earn a healthy buck / And still keep your attitude on self-destruct.' 'Who You Think I Am?' features Doom's crew M.onster I.sland C.zars, while on '?' he trades hot verses with former Columbia artist Kurious Jorge. Doom's avant-garde ghetto-rhyme philosophies take even more intentionally weird twists on 'Tick, Tick...' where he and guest MC MF Grimm's flows warble over a rhythm track whose tempo speeds up and slows down continually. The comic-book themed skits, will help take you deep into the mind of an MC who is as otherworldly as they come. And in today's bland commercial rap universe, Operation: Doomsday's left-of-center beats and rhymes are the perfect remedy."

CHRISTENSEN, MATT Honeymoons CD
Matt Christensen, the singer and guitarist of atmospheric masterminds Zelienople, presents his solo album, Honeymoons. His most recent solo endeavor however embodies a song writer deeply involved with his own vision of sound, resulting in an accomplishment strong enough to stand on its own. Matt delivers a longing and emotional outreach through Honeymoons's six delicate songs and immersing into them provides a feeling of understanding and affiliation that turns solitude into a state of awareness and insight. The sparse instrumentation of broad guitar/effects and incisive drum machine adds immediacy to this recording and the airy arrangements keep the perfect balance between song structure, free-form playfulness and silence. Accompanied by Matt's echoing voice and personal lyrics, his recipe is being formed and dilated into an experience that requires devotion to be fully perceived and appreciated. "I'm See Through" may be the protagonist's self-perception but by guiding his compositions through foggy, pliant tone constellations he leaves us in doubt that Matt's output could ever be considered transparent. Honeymoons, his first album for Miasmah, is a perfect reminder of how interfering contradictions can make the most interesting installations. The confrontation of organic guitar movements, stirring poetry and patterns of beat arrangements create fascinating tension: Honeymoons's full scale won't unfold instantly but you will be captivated right away. The listener is allowed a deeply moving glance into a contemplative musician's mind by witnessing an outstanding statement for imparting the feeling of companionship. CD version comes in a digipak and is a limited edition of 500.

CAMBERWELL NOW The EP Collection LP
"Taking inspiration from seafaring and imperialism, and the fact that the music was created within close proximity to the meridian line in Greenwich, the Meridian EP was originally intended to be a project for This Heat. The group's departing member Charles Bullen plays on the opening track, 'Cutty Sark', named for the famed British clipper ship. The second EP, 1987's Greenfingers, was their final recorded work and, according to Hayward, 'it's possible to hear the group atomizing and preparing to go its separate ways' within its grooves. The only This Heat or Camberwell Now recording not to have been produced at Brixton's Cold Storage studios, it was recorded as a DIY exercise and -- unusually for either of the groups -- was not pored over laboriously for a great deal of time. The EP also saw the addition of a new member, Maria Lamburn, primarily on sax, whose 'Element Unknown' was inspired by her experiences in the nuclear protest camp at Greenham Common. Comprising tracks that overlapped between This Heat and Camberwell Now, the EPs concerned themselves with information technology, surveillance, propaganda and what Hayward describes as 'day-to-day, hand-to-mouth survival' -- all pertinent concerns in a fractured Britain under the rule of right-wing 'Iron Lady' Margaret Thatcher, and perhaps still as pertinent today in fractured, recession-hit, isolationist Britain. The group dispersed after a final European tour, amicably, quietly, and differently, the latter their MO throughout a unique career. Goronwy, Hayward and Rickard all share their experiences and thoughts on The Camberwell Now in liner notes accompanying this landmark release: young and old, birth and death captured on two sides of vinyl. Official vinyl re-issue in collaboration with original members. 24 bit/96 kHz re-master from original analog tapes. Restored art, expanded to a gatefold tip-on jacket. Includes download card with two bonus tracks. 8 page booklet with track notes by the artists, lyrics and archival photos."

ORLEANS, ELA Circles Of Upper And Lower Hell CD
"Circles of Upper and Lower Hell is the grandest, deepest work to date by Polish-born, Glasgow-based sound artist and composer Ela Orleans. From her beginnings inaugurating a lo-fi, homespun style that has since developed fully into a language uniquely her own, from tentative live outings featuring multiple instruments to a now-masterly command of sound, Orleans has become one of the most consistently surprising musicians of the global underground. The seventh album under her own name, this expansive vision, loosely based on Dante's Inferno but infused with deep personal experience, incorporates sound art, orchestral textures, synth pop and electronic music to construct a world equally peppered with loss and inspiration. It pulls all the strands of Orleans' previous work together into an epic depiction of turmoil wide in scope but reveling in detail. The album documents a far more personal approach to conventional songwriting. Previously, the artist's sonic textures have relied on samples cleaved out of context, buried songs beneath warped aural gauze, but Circles blows every element of Orleans's art upwards and further apart."

NGOZI FAMILY Day Of Judgement LP
Repressed. "Proto-punk and garage Zamrock: the celebrated guitarist Paul Ngozi's essential debut album. Featuring Chrissy Zebby Tembo. Guitarist/vocalist Paul Ngozi's debut album ? under the name Ngozi Family - is an important record: not just in the Zamrock genre, but in the global rock canon. Day of Judgement is an introduction to the most intense, raw and inimitable golden era Zamrock recorded, as it paved the way for a dozen Paul Ngozi and Ngozi Family releases (the most famous being drummer Chrissy Zebby Tembo's My Ancestors) that straddled the line between funk and punk, of driving hard rock and Zambian folk melodies and rhythms. Day of Judgement was released in 1976, the same year as other, now famous, Zamrock albums, from WITCH's Lazy Bones!! to Rikki Ililonga's Zambia. But it sounds like none of its counterparts. Part of that stems from its frenzied primitivism, the Ngozi Family's attempt to overcome a lack of musical acumen with sheer force of will. That will allowed Paul Ngozi to overcome a humble upbringing to become the most unlikely combination: Zamrock's most beloved star in its brief but now-well chronicled arc; the only musician to maintain his fame and recording prowess in the dark ages of the '80s; an inspiration to not only aging but young Zambians -- and now others, beyond Zambia's borders. But one cannot imagine Paul Ngozi without this album, a full-on aural assault that sounds as wild nearly forty years after its release as it must have sounded in the developing Zamrock landscape from which it emerged. We listen to this anachronistic yet prescient album now as a wholly original, completely unpredictable album in line with those from mavericks from across the world - from the Ramones to the Sex Pistols to Death. And, though it's been over two decades since Paul Ngozi's passing, his voice and vision still seem exciting, powerful, unique, unvarnished, new."

Punk vibes still run through the dark and bass-heavy sound of Deeform though. GRAU, DANIEL El Leon Bailarin CD
Oom Dooby Dochas present a reissue of Daniel Grau's El Leon Bailarin, originally released in 1980. El Leon Bailarin shows the typical trademarks of its Venezuelan creator Daniel Grau. Spaced-out disco grooves with some nifty female vocals aspirated gently upon the light-footed waves of synthesizer melodies and pulsating rhythms. An exception is the second track "Con En Cielo En Tus Ojos" which is a lush and utterly relaxed floating Latin pop number with a repetitive vocal line breathing an atmosphere of peace. There is definitely more color on this album than expected from listening to the Disco Fantasy (DOO 16001CD/LP, 1979) record which in fact was a strong piece already. Fans of Donna Summer during the late '70s will love the silky, yet vivid feel of the steady pulse the rhythms offer on El Leon Bailarin. This is one of those albums that should have been legendary among the dancing public when it was released - peppered with memorable tunes that work well even decades after its release. Looking beyond the surface, dig this is a real jewel of its genre.

PLANETARY ASSAULT SYSTEMS Arc Angel 3x12"
3x12" version. Includes digital download. Luke Slater returns to Ostgut Ton with a Planetary Assault Systems album titled Arc Angel. Staying true to the project's initial mission statement, Slater comments on the new yet familiar musical direction: "For me, music has to go forward. I'd feel I was cheating by sticking to tried-and-tested formulas." With Arc Angel, Planetary Assault Systems departs to new musical frontiers by focusing on melody, but staying rooted in the purist values of techno. While the album title may sound like a reference to spiritual matters, it hints to rather secular affairs. Arc Angel is a postmodernist, non-comfortist techno album first and foremost. In the tradition of Slater's previous albums with Ostgut Ton - The Messenger (OSTGUT 010LP/020CD, 2011) and Temporary Suspension (OSTGUT 004LP/009CD, 2009) - its musical motifs radiate around polymorphic and extraterrestrial sounds, using contemporary instrumental language, but with an emphasis on compatible musical phrases. "With this album it was very much a case of limitation and focus around the idea of alternative melody," Slater says, "I love music that takes you somewhere new. All music for this album had to pass that test. At the same time I wanted to re-root the foundations of what I see as techno into that and focus on melody, rather than a track just being a beat." While there are nods to the past, Arc Angel aims for the future. There's shimmering sounds reminiscent of light beams being fired ("Tri Fn Trp"), pulsing signals in deep space ("Angel Of The East", "Sonar Falls", "Groucho") and rather harsh aesthetics ("The Last Scene"). Its melodic range includes hypnotic arrangements ("Merry Go Round", "Blue Monk"), distorted bells ("Revolution One"), rainbow noise and spatial effects - for the most part meshing with heavy kick drums ("Message From The Drone Sector", "The Rider"), sometimes using reduced beat patterns ("Max"), at times turning to repetitious loops, analog synth pads and alienated vocal bits ("Interlude 1 to 6"). Despite its musical richness, all gear had to fit onto a small table. "I love software, hardware, technology; but because we have almost endless choice of sound creating devices, it drove me to using very limited and focused equipment. Actually taking influences from the way an original blues guy... He has the guitar, the box and voice - I have the 909 and 808." POOM 2016 LP
Gatefold LP version. Poom present their debut album, 2016. Poom differ from the French song scenery with their electronic sounds inherited from the French touch, their love for funk and disco and a hint of symphonic orchestra. The influences of French artists such as Michel Legrand, Daft Punk, Gainsbourg or Air are apparent on 2016. The texts are intimate and their performance swings between elation and melancholy which contrasts with their energetic arrangements. Taking advantage of their art studies, Poom created the whole visual universe of the project. Their debut album gathers ten tracks written since the start of the project, with two modern covers of French writer and artist Boris Vian and French singer Georges Brassens. Their first two singles "Les Voiles" and "De la Vitesse à l'vresse" were released in 2014 and 2015 on Partyfine and got great press in France. It also received surprising international recognition, Pharrell playlisted "Les Voiles" on his Beats1 show for example.

PUCE MARY The Spiral LP
Repressed. The Spiral is Puce Mary's third LP for Posh Isolation. It follows where 2014's critically acclaimed Persona left off. Working more precisely than ever, The Spiral binds the listener in a tight web of sharp synthesizers, hammering percussion, obscured vocals, field recordings, and blistering noise. Intimidatingly personal, though never allowing the introspection to become aimless, Puce Mary manages to honor the history of industrial music and noise while simultaneously transforming it. The Spiral is harsh, but the aggression of the compositions never feels unnecessarily overstated or irrelevant. As the feverish sexuality of The Spiral comes into focus as the album's cornerstone, the exertion of the recording is problematized and turns errant. The vestige of safety in dominance and submission is antagonized as audience and artist take turns being dealt blows. The Spiral charts this instability as a perennial tonic in sound. With an already impressive discography and live career, Puce Mary has manifested herself as a key voice in new experimental electronic music. This album is further proof that she has earned her praise.

CHADWICK, SARAH MARY Roses Always Die LP
"Following three critically acclaimed solo albums, Sarah Mary Chadwick's Roses Always Die expands on the quiet intensity of her previous work, exploring memory, grief and personal analysis. Her unflinching approach to songwriting introduces complex, often difficult subject matter as vivid as it is understated. An old immobile organ provides the only accompaniment to her voice, giving the album an eerie consistency that perfectly underpins the diverse, open-ended narratives that run through each song. The second album recorded with Geoffrey O'Connor (Crayon Fields), it has a more organic sound than the wall of synths used on 9 Classic Tracks, with most songs comprised of just one voice and a live '70s Yamaha analogue organ -- a huge, heavy, double-tiered beast with built-in percussion beats and pedal bass -- recorded on site in the loungeroom at Sarah's house in Collingwood, Melbourne. Unembellished and at times brutally sparse, these songs are whittled down to their surprisingly hooky, heartbreaking, wry, bare-boned essentials."

BLOWN OUT New Cruiser LP
Newcastle Trio Blown Out continue on their voyage through deep fuckin' space with New Cruiser. Power-driven, psychedelic rock, New Cruiser is made of two huge tracks of blistering leads, mind-melting brain changes and max fuzz. Influenced tonally by "Peace In Mississippi"/"Crash Landing" third generation cassette culture and tight Grand Funk oblivion rhythm mind chemistry. Blown Out features members of Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs, Khünnt, Bong and HaiKai No Ku. "New Cruiser" dives straight in with some deep, rolling bass, crashing drums and the trademark guitar from Mike Vest. The track rolls and pitches along its way, based, as ever, on repetition (the bass of John-Michael Hedley becomes positively hypnotic) while the guitar weaves heavy, reverb-drenched patterns in the sky. Blown Out have become masters of creating music that is heavy enough to affect the gravitational pull of nearby planets whilst still having the ability to mesmerize. If "Phase II" may sound a tad familiar to some, that's because it is a reworked, longer version of the same on Celestial Sphere (2016). It continues pretty much where "New Cruiser" left off: blistering, fuzzy wah-wah, jackhammer drums and undulating bass all coming together to create an Heironymous Bosch like vision of hell. Vest's guitar positively wails at times like some poor tormented denizen of the underworld. Like "New Cruiser". it is the repetition that holds the power. Given all of the free-wheeling, freak-out guitar, it has a structure and a form to which the rhythm section sticks rigidly. This is the less-than-secret ingredient in the Blown Out recipe - tightness of form that allows a freedom of expression - sounds oxymoronic but without the drums/bass creating a framework, the guitar of Vest would sound chaotic and functionless, but instead it sounds free but purposeful. In all, New Cruiser is another unqualified success, guaranteed to scramble the brains and scare the neighbors. This is what "psychedelic" music is all about. Not flowers and sugar cubes and paeans to long lost pastoral idylls, but music that can transport you. RIYL: Psychedelic rock, spaced-out jams, Acid Mothers Temple, Bong, The Cosmic Dead, Les Rallizes Denudes, Earthless. Includes a download code. Edition of 400.

D/P/I Composer CD
D/P/I (Alex Gray) is a musician, DJ and visual artist from USA; he has made music under the alias of Deep Magic and as a part of various Sun Araw Trios, Duos and Quartets. Now, most of the time, he plays drums, guitar, or saxophone at home for his other half & two cats. Here he presents Composer. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at D+M."Composer is an album of rhythms that, once started, eventually completed themselves without much input from the composer. The character of a rhythm can develop very simply/unconsciously with just a slightly different part of the hand hitting a drum, or the wrist getting tired, causing trembling and stuttering that further magnifies the rhythmic stability of the pattern and/or player. With electronics, it's different physically, as you are not 'hitting' anything, but the link to the subconscious/unconscious, remains analogous. Every adjustment to a single sound/pattern can reveal complexities that were not apparent when the sound/pattern started. A natural flow begins, similar to the development of complex accents via 'human error' of using an ordinary djembe or conga: as the composer begins to be entranced by the sound/pattern, with a midi-mapped set of physical knobs, controlling complex processes/effects - each effect/process assumes its own character for that, almost quantum-like, layer of improvisation - layer by layer, until the simple layers of sound/patterns have naturally developed into compositions that reflect the seeming-instability, excitement, and sadness in time, here referred to as a fixed, unmoving element in the 'universe', that our human software is intrinsically dependent on to interpret these rhythms and the rest of the material world. This album was fun, exciting and unpredictable until the day it was 'finished'. I hope this album encourages people to think for themselves. This isn't a 'techno', 'experimental', 'abstract', 'dance', 'IDM', or any 'genre' of album. I hope you know what I mean. I hope that music hasn't lost the quality of inter-being 'beyond categorization'. I also hope that, to a small extent, this album can act as a beacon of creativity for future generations, who are currently being completely saturated by marketing content for products and media that will do nothing but confuse and distract them." -- Alex Gray, July 2016.

GARVARENTZ, GEORGES Panic Button CD
Skokiaan present a reissue of Georges Garvarentz's Panic Button, originally released in 1964. The mastermind behind this album can be seen as a luminary in the field of movie soundtracks, especially for the '60s and '70s, his career lasting til the early '90s, up to his untimely death. Panic Button is the third album of its kind from Garvarentz, composed for an Italian low budget comedy film, of the same name, released in 1964. The most interesting fact about the movie is the participation of cult actress Jayne Mansfield, who also was part of the inner circle of Anton Lavey in the '60s. The music is a colorful trip through different styles from Italian traditional music to lush orchestral baroque music with most of the tunes being laid down by a well-rehearsed, big band. With big band swing background, Garvarentz explores the more light-footed corners of this genre and the result is a breathtaking joy. The melodies bring images of crowded market places and nifty street restaurants in Italian cities. The performances have the right amount of steam and passion to get the listener dancing and singing along to these sunny harmonies. The pieces themselves are perfectly placed with high energetic moments and gentle parts following each other to sustain the attention of the listener and underline the different scenes of the movie in an ideal way. For fans of old movie scores from the early '60s that make use of big band orchestration, hip-shaking grooves to the tunes and the occasional hushed moods. Panic Button is all about fun and felicity with a deeper feeling accompanying the compositions.

SHIHAB, SAHIB Sahib's Jazz Party CD
Skokiaan present a reissue of Sahib Shihab's Sahib's Jazz Party, originally released in 1964. In a time before jazz music went free and avant garde, there were a couple of inspired souls who put an emphasis on extended jams and improvised, yet melodic parts based on a rather repetitive rhythm background. The result in turning away from the rather artistic and complicated bebop was the modal jazz that came up in the second half of the 1950s, lasting as the leading style until the mid to late '60s. Sahib Shihab can be seen as one of the protagonists of modal jazz despite being more of an underground star in the scene and being more popular in Europe than in the USA, from where he originates. He often worked as a member of an ensemble but had a couple of albums out as a bandleader. Sahib's Jazz Party is his third album as a bandleader. Recorded live in its entirety Sahib's Jazz Party features a few highly entertaining announcements by the master himself leaving the impression that Sahib was a bit far out that day. The performance is beautiful and passionate. He plays flute and saxophone backed up by a Danish jazz orchestra even with an electric guitar, in clean mode of course. Especially in the third part of the "Conversation" piece the dialogues between saxophone and trumpet are amazing while in "Charade" Shihab uses his flute to conjure a mind-relaxing atmosphere. The rhythms are all quite hot and whipping. The drummers must be some kind of madmen. Yes, there are two drummers indicated for the "Conversation" long track and the ever pulsating and vibrating rhythm patterns will prove that right. Bass and guitar rather back up everything and fill the gaps with simple notes which add just enough to leave the whole picture feeling full and round. Sahib's Jazz Party holds the same level as the most appreciated works of Miles Davis and John Coltrane during their modal jazz stint. All-in-all, the whole band is steaming and so full of passion, any listener will be electrified without fail.

VA Urgent Jumping!: East African Musiki Wa Dansi Classics 2CD
A collection of 27 East African golden oldies from the '70s and '80s compiled by the British DJ and journalist John Armstrong. One well-known word and a phrase in KiSwahili - "safari" and "hakuna matata" - are both useful and euphonious, but they aren't enough for a sophisticated music-lover. "Zilipendwa" denotes an object of admiration, but in a musical context it applies to what might be called "golden oldies". "Serebuka" is a lovely word that translates as "blissful expressive dance". "Musiki wa dansi" (the KiSwahili-English exchange goes both ways) is the general term for "zilipendwa" that inspires "serebuka", and it's what this double-album is all about. KiSwahili is spoken throughout East Africa (a first language for many people, a lingua franca for most) and is sung in various musical styles, but other languages give voice to other styles in this culturally diverse region, and musiki wa dansi encompasses some of them, too. One of the most prominent is benga, which originated in the 1970s among musicians of the Luo ethnic group in western Kenya, drawing on traditional rhythms and melodies but wielding electric guitars and basses. From further west came rumba and soukous, brought by Congolese émigrés to Kenya and Tanzania, where they formed bands that often included musicians from all three countries, sang in Lingala, KiSwahili and local languages, and have been enormously popular and influential since the '60s. MARQUEE, ANDREA Zumbi CD
2000 release. Andrea Marquee made Zumbi, her first album, with São Paulo's YBrazil? musicians's collective, most notably guitarist and composer Maurício Tagliari and electronic beats producer Rica Amabis. They reimagined pieces by earlier Brazilian innovators such as Caetano Veloso and Jorge Ben, and Marquee and Tagliari wrote original songs that drew from samba, bossa nova, tropicália, hip-hop and EDM. The result was, as The Guardian applauded, "an impressive collision of Brazilian melody with new global rhythm patters and technology." All Music called Andrea Marquee "one of the most interesting and adventurous singers in Brazilian popular music."

ZONNEVELD, REINIER Megacity Servant CD
Reinier Zonneveld's third studio effort, Megacity Servant, stands as a coherent 16-piece techno outfit tinged with experimental tones while playfully deconstructing classic acid and disco fragments. Reinier's style of production ranges from cavernous power tracks to more concise trips subdued with melancholic piano-stemmed soundscapes. "Plastic People" swiftly introduces a raw techno dungeon mood with varying elements make for a surrealist atmosphere. Following up in the same timbre, a heavy-hitting percussion sets off "8 Ball". The moving bassline is revealed as centerpiece, while faint vocals antagonize the rhythm. Cari Golden stellar vocals and skillful lyrics on "Things We Might Have Said" shine paired with Zonneveld's production prowess. Seizing attention for the full length of the track, the entire arrangement seduces the listener, making for a clamorous earworm. "Disturbed Minds" offers an experimental set of distorted synths permeating the speakers. "Spacedge" comes in the form of a groovy, laid back offering, with a blunt loopy vocal and a fractured field recording of over 50 layers as memorable high points. "Gateway" has a focus on dancefloor antics, elements zigzag, mimicking the initial arrangement. Having created an immersive loop, the percussion switches sides playing the melody. "Megacity Servant" makes use of the classic Roland SH-101's ability to emit a nearly tridimensional sound ray, unfolding newer details with each listen. The relentless melody, padded with grave synth arrays, establishes a melancholic mood. "EHT" unveils a heavy-hitting resolution, as the artist layers on hefty polarizing synths. A powerful arrangement that is unsettling and playful at the same time, diving into dark techno realms. Sharp clangs and high synths pepper the melody in "Modern Voodoo" amounting to a relentless, mind-reprogramming tidbit. "Dive" slows down the storyline, leaving just enough room to breathe until "Dynamite" pops in. Bolstering a progressive melody with a spacy vocal hook, the track turns the usual SH-101's '70s string loop into a techno-palatable disco instance. "Sharp Bust 2.2" previously released, is now reworked and reconstructed to amp up and stabilize the raw techno energy. Aymar's lush voice offsets the metallic production pads in "Beast" which unfolds as a spacious and multilateral sonic journey. American pop-folk singer Simone White comes "You Could Be The One I Want", a ludic techno ballad. A steady groove with a wandering synth line, "Abstinence" brings a moment of brief calm, followed by pure downtempo in "Anti Matter". Includes download code.

GOMBERG, BILLY Slight At That Contact LP
"Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist Billy Gomberg's past work has released by labels such as and/OAR, Digitalis and Sunshine Ltd. In addition to his solo output, he operates in a variety of collaborative settings (including Fraufraulein, a duo with fellow label alum Anne Guthrie) and, over the course of the last five years, has carved out a niche for himself at the crossroads of electro-acoustic improvisation, ambient, and minimalist music. The beguiling Slight At That Contact brings to mind both the bucolic electronica of Microstoria and the expansive arrangements of Mirages-era Tim Hecker. 'Medial' opens the record with a sea of vaporous, blooming tones set against an array of delicately percussive clicks and cuts. 'Acute' further develops this, conjuring the cinematic atmosphere of a train station in a ruined, futuristic metropolis. Over the course of eight understated but nuanced compositions, Gomberg cultivates an intoxicating aural topography, a deep, expressive collection that offers considerable rewards to the attentive listener."

FIS From Patterns To Details CD
FIS presents From Patterns To Details, his second full length release. Natural patterns of organic life make the most efficient use of space and surface area and in permaculture design one observes natural patterns in a landscape and plans details accordingly. Taking a self-occurring pattern like the veins of a leaf, contour lines, or the spirals of water and letting that guide interactions with the surface of the earth. The ethos is to work with natural flow and processes rather than to impose. Mirroring this idea, From Patterns To Details draws from the sense of a deeper underlying order. It sees continuity between environment and individual, continuity between external bodies and the internal emotional landscapes that music can communicate beyond the affordances of language. The album embraces technology as something that is not in conflict with the organic processes of nature. Technology is treated as life in a different state. Human beings are gardens in a different state; all temporary forms of the same thing. From Patterns To Details imagines states of alignment with all and harmonious design, a complete integration between personal and external systems whether organic or technological. FIS composes physical, spirited, exploratory electronic music inspired in part by his work as a permaculture designer. Initially developing his craft on the sound systems of his birth country New Zealand, he went on to a string of critically acclaimed releases on Tri Angle Records and Loopy.

MINGUS, CHARLES The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady LP
2016 repress. "Bassist/composer Charles Mingus is one of the most radical figures in American music. Throughout the '50s, he worked as a sideman with legendary players Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and more. In the '60s, he gained recognition as a bandleader, often followed by controversy for making strong-minded statements in the press about race, politics and stodgy music critics. While Mingus received many honors posthumously as well as during his career, perhaps his greatest achievement was transcending the restrictive label of jazz. The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady is without question Mingus's magnum opus. Originally released on Impulse! in 1963, the album broke new ground in both genre-defying composition and innovative recording techniques. A six-part suite with dramatic shifts in mood and tempo, The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady features the three-way brass dialog of trumpets, trombone, and tuba; swooping reeds; and awe-inspiring rhythm section. Balancing delicate Spanish modes and Ellingtonian themes, the ensemble breaks into a divine cacophony of group improvisation on par with free jazz giants like Ornette Coleman or Cecil Taylor. In his best-known essay, 'Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung,' Lester Bangs praises, 'the experience of the first few listenings to a record so total, so mind-twisting, that you authentically can say you'll never be quite the same again. Black Saint and The Sinner Lady did that, and a very few others. They're events you remember all your life, like your first real orgasm.' This long out-of-print vinyl release has been carefully remastered from the original master tapes."

While Mingus received many honors posthumously as well as during his career, perhaps his greatest achievement was transcending the restrictive label of jazz. Mingus Plays Piano, released just a few months after his masterpiece The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady, is the only record to feature Mingus performing on his instrument of choice for composing. From the opening track, appropriately titled 'Myself When I Am Real,' Mingus shrugs off any virtuosic pretensions of solo albums and stakes out more introspective territory. These trance-like, poetic musings reveal a tenderness rarely associated with Mingus, reminiscent of Erik Satie's piano works and Art Tatum's free rhythmic style. This long out-of-print vinyl release has been carefully remastered from the original master tapes."

JANSCH, BERT Bert Jansch LP
"Scottish singer-songwriter Bert Jansch recorded his first album in producer Bill Leader's London flat with a borrowed guitar, sitting on the edge of the bed and singing into a portable tape recorder. As author Richie Unterberger writes in the liner notes, 'When Bert Jansch's self-titled debut LP was issued in April 1965, he was already a major figure on the British folk scene. His synthesis of traditional British folk with blues and a bit of jazz was at the vanguard of a new generation of UK folk performers, well-versed in past forms but unafraid to venture into new territory. His virtuosic guitar was complemented by a plaintive rough-hewn voice that didn't just document the on-the-road experience, but lived it.' Bert Jansch contains all original material, except a shattered cover of Davy Graham's 'Angie' that Jansch makes all his own. 'Needle of Death,' one of the first folk songs to address the consequences of heroin use, yields to a restraint uncommon for Jansch, yet beautifully encapsulates the album's tone of heartfelt conviction. Superior Viaduct is honored to present the first-time domestic release of Bert Jansch's debut, remastered from the original master tapes. For those interested in a unique strand of music that would become a major influence on everyone from Jimmy Page, Nick Drake, Donovan, Neil Young and more - there is no better place to start than here."

KJELLVANDER, CHRISTIAN A Village: Natural Light LP+CD
LP version. Includes CD. "In regards to the album A Village: Natural Light by Christian Kjellvander, I am writing to you as a friend of Christian Kjellvander. I was sitting in Christian's kitchen in Malmö when he picked up a guitar and played the album Faya (2005) in its entirety. I was sitting in his living room in Rynge when he played me the final mix of I Saw Her From Here/I Saw Here From Her (2007). He was at my house in Denmark when he played me the demos for The Rough and Rynge (2010). When Christian bought an old church in a tiny Swedish village I brought my family. We stayed there right before he started recording The Pitcher (TR 273CD/LP, 2013). Walking around that big beautiful room, hearing how beautiful it sounded and knowing that this sound would be captured on many amazing albums to come was comforting. This new album is the best there is. A Village: Natural Light is an album about living, loving and dying. When I listen to these songs I think about how important it is to really live your life. These songs right here are about staying and riding it out. Create a life of your own, surround yourself with good people, don't let bastards get you down and make the most of what you got. Make sure to love. Christian told me that he had started working part-time in a cemetery in a small Swedish village while writing these songs because he wanted to get the realest job he could and let it bleed into his songs. Make something that truly sounded like where he was - in a village, like a microcosm of the world we live in today facing life and death. This leads me to thinking about the beauty in mourning and how it's an important part of life. I think about how we isolate ourselves from other people and how it takes away our reasons to mourn. A mixture of genuine happiness, sadness and appreciation. The album was recorded at Christian's old church in Österåker by Ruben Engzell. The band really made the most out of that beautiful sounding room. A truly great album by a truly great artist who has been releasing nothing but great albums since the late '90s." -- Henry Toft. LUSTMORD Dark Matter CD
Lustmord, often credited as the originator of dark ambient, presents Dark Matter. Dark Matter was derived from an audio library of cosmological activity collected between 1993 and 2003; the audio was gathered from various sources including NASA (Cape Canaveral, Ames, The Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Arecibo), The Very Large Array, The National Radio Astronomy Observatory and various educational institutions and private contributors throughout the USA. Lustmord writes: "The universe we inhabit is a vast expanse far larger than we are able to comprehend. As we attempt to understand its underlying structure and as we gain new insight into the nature of matter, new questions arise and further gaps in our understanding are revealed. Behind the world that we experience lies a veil of darkness and much is hidden between, beyond and unseen. We are limited by our inability to truly grasp the infinite breadth of the Universe, the time scales involved in its measure and our insignificant position within. Some things will always be unknowable, and existence does not begin or end with man's conception. Everything that has ever been observed by man, even with our most sophisticated instruments amounts, to less than five percent of the universe. Approximately sixty-eight percent of the universe is unseen dark energy and approximately twenty-seven percent is unseen dark matter. We have yet to discover what dark matter is, and only know the things it is not. Although it has not been directly observed, its existence and properties are inferred from its effects on visible matter, its influence on the universe's large-scale structure, and its effects in the cosmic microwave background. The universe began of darkness, not of light. While space is a virtual vacuum, it does not mean there is no sound in space. It exists in space as naturally occurring electromagnetic vibrations, many well within the range of human hearing while others exist at different regions of the electromagnetic spectrum and these can be adjusted with software to bring them within our audio range. The recordings of these interactions in space come from several different environments including radio, ultra violet, microwave and X-ray data and within these spectra a wide range of sources including interstellar plasma and molecules, radio galaxies, pulsars masers and quasars, charged particle interactions and emissions, radiation, exotic astrophysical objects, cosmic jets and flares from magnetars." Recorded in Los Angeles between October and December of 2015. Artwork and photography by Jon Wozencroft.

BRAND NUBIAN One For All 2LP
Repressed. "When released at the end of 1990 Brand Nubian's One for All emerged into musical landscape yet to be littered with disposable hip hop. The politically charged and socially conscious material brought acclaim to the project, both critically and commercially. The Source granted the album a full on Five Mics saying Brand Nubian's debut 'overflows with creativity, originality, and straight-up talent.' Even Robert Christgau of the Village Voice, who's reviews often read like a riddle penned by a hater, laced One for All with a solid A-. By the late '90s the record had been named one of The Source's 100 Best Rap Albums with the single 'Slow Down' on their list of Top 100 hip hop singles of all time. Sure, militant five percenter beliefs (among other things) stirred controversy. Yet the music found here remains relevant and has stood the test of time. Besides, some of us miss the days when inflammatory rhetoric in hip hop could cause controversy. Long out of print on vinyl, Traffic Entertainment now proudly presents this fresh pressing of one of hip hop's most crucial releases. A moment in time captured in the grooves of the double vinyl pressing for the world to remember how great the genre can be."

RHYS, GRUFF Set Fire To The Stars (Original Soundtrack) CD
Gruff Rhys presents the soundtrack for the film Set Fire To The Stars (2014). Although recorded around the same time as Gruff's last LP (2014's hugely acclaimed American Interior), Set Fire To The Stars paints a very different picture to that of the Welsh explorer John Evans. Equal parts cocktail jazz, hazy Americana and atomic age bop, it's a love letter to New York in all its hopeful, post war glory - a gorgeous diversion of a record to add to Gruff's increasingly brilliant solo catalogue. Gruff on Set Fire To The Stars: "This is an album of music written for a film directed by Andy Goddard concerning the poet Dylan Thomas's first week in the USA in 1950 and his uneven friendship with fellow poet - and agent of sorts - John Malcolm Brinnin. As the film is shot in black and white and set in the jazz age, I decided not to use any instruments unavailable in that era. I also kept the recordings as live takes. Beyond that - I didn't try and ape the style of that era in particular apart from the song 'Atom Bomb' which on screen, plays on a jukebox in a cafe and needed to be true to the year sonically and lyrically in some way. Playing the guitar, I formed a short lived 'Agro-Jazz' quartet (you got a problem with that?) called Video Loss with Chris Walmsley on drums, Jim Barr on double bass and Osian Gwynedd on piano. I wrote a bunch of songs and instrumentals. Some other bits were improvised to picture by Osian Gwynedd and myself. 'Chop Shop' features Video Loss on max Moon-Ra improvisational setting. Gruff ab Arwel arranged all the strings and Gavin Fitzjohn played and scored the brass. It was recorded and mixed at Toybox, Bristol by the incredible Ali Chant - apart from the strings which were recorded at Metropolis, London."
