SPARKS Sparks LP
"Sparks's eponymous 1971 debut presents the singular compositional, lyrical and singing voices of Ron and Russell Mael fully formed. Originally released under the moniker Halfnelson, Sparks's prescient debut prefigures Queen, power pop, and especially Southern California's late '70s skinny-tie explosion. It's a landmark of Todd Rungren's early production career, and clearly the backing band of brothers Earle and Jim Mankey brought Sparks's pop idiosyncrasies to their later work with The Dickies, The Quick and 20/20. Infectious, daring, and delightfully flaunting camp theatricality throughout, Sparks is the first installment in an unparalleled series of some of the decade's most classic albums. Careening melodies soar through space-detritus electronics on the strikingly original 'Roger,' which evokes the early solo work of Brian Eno, but the deranged art-rock closing track '(No More) Mr. Nice Guys' is the unequivocal classic of Sparks's early career and a staple of the band's live set ever since. Rundgren's restrained production wisely sets the Mael brothers at the fore of Sparks. With just subtly treated cymbal flourishes keeping the pace, album opener 'Wonder Girl' is pared down and mixed to showcase two things: Ron's twinkling piano trill and Russell's fluttering high-register. As Rundgren perceived, and a multi-decade career confirms since, their fraternal chemistry is a consummate force."

IL CIVETTO Lubmin 12"
Lubmin orbits around a song from Berlin band Il Civetto whose sound is reminiscent of gypsy, folk or swing, but at the same time it doesn't really fit any of these labels - "Liberté Ana" is a perfect example. Monolink turns this track into a groovy downbeat tune that vibrates much higher than its low BPM count. PopHop does what he does best: Party. However, between the catchy bassline and the tight percussions of his remix there's still a lot of space for the soul of "Liberté Ana". Umami creates an ecstatic banger perfect for prime-time on the dancefloor.

VA Sri Lanka: The Golden Era Of Sinhalese And Tamil Folk-Pop Music 2LP
Double LP version. Sri Lanka still remained one of the rare South Asian countries whose folk-pop music from the 1960-70s had not yet been compiled abroad. This gap is now to be filled with Sri Lanka: The Golden Era Of Sinhalese And Tamil Folk-Pop Music. This compilation presents the diversity of Sri Lankan musical styles between 1967 and 1979 through 30 titles. It comes along with a booklet depicting the country's historical, cultural and musical context. Sri Lanka possesses a great variety of musical traditions and influences which have been shaped by centuries of regional and international exchanges. If Sri Lankan music is undeniably part of South Asian musical culture, its heritage is also a product of almost five centuries of European imperialism. Coming from an original form of creolization, as defined by Edouard Glissant, the baila bears the trace of both the African diaspora and the Iberian influences on the country. The Kaffirs - African slaves deported by the Portuguese - introduced African sounds, while the Portuguese brought their musical traditions and instruments (cavaquinho, mandolin, violin, tambourines). The baila, reminiscent of Caribbean calypso, became the ultimate popular music and dance. The sarala gee (also called light classical music) is a combination of Indian inspired music, either classical or close to Bollywood productions, with Sinhalese lyrics and a slight pop accent. In the early 1960s, the music label Sooriya Records, with founder Gerald Wickremesooriya, were determined to put into light proper Sri Lankan music. Wickremesooriya invented the "new sound of Ceylonese pop" and quickly, the label's hits were broadcasted on Radio Ceylon, the number one radio for a long time. Sooriya Records's catalog reflected the diversity of Sri Lankan musical styles of the times: Anglo-Saxon influenced Sinhalese pop stood next to the baila or the sarala gee. Traditional instrumental music, were also edited by the label. This selection, mainly constituted of titles from Sooriya Records's catalog, presents the most popular artists of the times. Features: Pau Fernando, W.D. Amaradeva, Clarence Wijewardena, Paramesh, The Fortunes, Sanath & Malkanthi Nandasiri, A.E. Manoharan, Pani Bharatha & Party, Mignonne & The Jetliners, Shan, Amitha Dalugama, Maxwell Mendis, Police Reserve Hewisi Band, Shiromi Fernando, Wimala Amaradeva, Indrani Perera, Winslow Six, The Moonstones & Indrani Perera, Sidasi Turya Vadayako, Nalino Nel, Los Flamincos, Lilanthi Karunanayake, Claude & The Sensations With Noeline Mendis, H.R. MIND LOTION Altitude Attitudes LP
Antinote squeeze out the Mind Lotion: eight sun-drenched excursions. Mind Lotion crafts a very modern guide to sun-drenched soundscapes in the form of Altitude Attitudes; a musical travel-log, consisting of eight pieces, written over two years, which are recollections of experiences, moments in time from trips - either real or romanticized - to exotic destinations. Exploring the softness of 1980s digital presets, Mind Lotion creates mental landscapes in a way reminiscent to D.K.'s escapade to his Island of Dreams (2016). Mineral samples meet crystalline synths on "Dreamscape", evocating half-submerged coral reefs, while the redolent flute on "Atmospherica" perfectly makes up for a great piece of "Lagoon House". Some tunes from Altitude Attitudes, such as "Hotel Breakfast", even recall the naivety of "Exotica" masters, while the percussions and eerie sounds "My Language" somehow take the listener back to Umiliani's vision of Polynesia or Africa. The flip provides the most "housy" moments of the record with "Astro Girl": beginning with a heady DX-7 bassline and layers of digital vibes, the song soon turns itself into a thumping typhoon of club fun. Next to this one is the closing track, "Algo Rydim", which illustrates the equilibrium reached by Mind Lotion on Altitude Attitudes: it always stays sophisticated, though it never takes itself too seriously.

WAH Travellers Station LP
Assophon present Travellers Station, the second album from WAH, the collaborative effort led by guitarist Simon Henneman (Diminished Men) and drummer Gregg Keplinger (master drummer and Charles Gocher's doppelganger). WAH have created a modern masterpiece of modal, spiritual and free expression. Coming off like a late, classic RVG session for Impulse, Travellers Station is snarled with the force of a pummeling rock band by two artful leaders of Seattle's underground jazz scene. Travellers Station boasts ten musicians including bassists Luke Bergman and Carmen Rothwell, vibraphonists Bob Rees and Jacques Willis, horn players Ray Larson and Neil Welch, vocalist Katie Jacobson, and percussionist and co-producer Dave Abramson. The breathtaking energy of WAH's legendary NW performances is captured here with razor sharp production that finds room for fiery free jazz, psychedelic drone, big belting rhythms, and cosmic anthems. Fans of the classic era of '68-'78 (Strata-East/Human Arts/Sonny Sharrock/private/spiritual/BYG/loft) jazz scenes in America and France will dig immensely.

JAY, TOMMY Tommy Jay's Tall Tales Of Trauma 2LP
Assophon present an expanded reissue of Tommy Jay's Tall Tales Of Trauma, originally released on cassette in 1986. "Tucked away between I-71 & US-62 lies nestled the quaint, speed trap hamlet of Harrisburg, Ohio. With its humble ambience, affable familiarity, weekend fish fries and Christian B&B ('mind the sherry, brother, for it is the Lords nectar'), blink twice and you might think you've been transported into a 21st century Winesburg, Ohio. Only now the emphasis is on a new chapter, 'The songsmith-concerning Tommy Jay'. In a converted barn just off Main St, Jay and friends have been forging a massive catalog of music, both original and cover variations, for a solid four decades. Fellow towns-person and erstwhile participant, one Mike 'Rep' Hummel (Serpent Mound expert, croquet enthusiast) was the first to make these recordings available when he issued a cassette of the proceedings under the title, Tommy Jay's Tall Tales Of Trauma via his homespun DIY label, Old Age/No Age, in 1986. For anyone prescient enough to lock in back then, they were staggered by talent, far removed from the stars of High Street (Great Plains, Gibson Bros, Willie Phoenix). A singer/songwriter par excellence, Tommy Jay ably forged a hybrid of pre-speedball Stephen Stills with post Iron Cross-headed Lou Reed, the results of which come across as both effortless and visionary. Some 20 years later, Tall Tales would finally receive it's long deserved elevation to the vinyl format (this time through Columbus Discount Records), and was now being heard by a new generation of ears, garnered immediate success, quickly sold out and inexplicably was never repressed. In the intervening limbo, copies were more sought than found, lucky bumpkins forking upwards to three figures for pride of ownership. Recently, Assophon, a US label with Jim Rockford-like determination, swooped in to un-fuck this glaring wart. Plus, time and patience being the powerful warriors they are, the new, expanded edition is brimming with a whole second platter of hoot; 13 unreleased tracks what's rarely been discerned this side of Tony's Coney's. Which all goes to say that the new and improved, 30th anniversary edition of Tommy Jay's Tall Tales Of Trauma is, to paraphrase the words of the late, great Randy Poffo, 'The record the whole world, Jupiter, Saturn, Venus... Or anywhere else is waiting for'." --Tom Lax Lynx.

ABSTRAXION She Thought She Would Last Forever CD
After his stunning debut album Break of Lights at the end of 2013 (HAKT 009CD/LP), Harold Boué, better known as Abstraxion, presents his second album She Thought She Would Last Forever. Abstraxion's career has already seen many highlights, two of which being the label he runs with Belgian producer DC Salas, Biologic Records, reaching its ten year anniversary in 2016 and having played some of the best clubs in the world. With his obvious talent and ability to create a pensive beauty in his productions, there is no doubt Abstraxion's career will continue to reach new heights. Full of reveries and hybrid explorations, Harold's second full length She Thought She Would Last Forever evokes images of landscapes and forests. A stretching dark and dystopian atmosphere pervades the album, but he still manages to mesh the melancholy with an overarching and swelling euphoria, contrasting themes of melancholia and exploring the tensions between expectation and reality. The explorative nature of the album is articulated clearly through Abstraxion's use of minor chords and organic sounds. She Thought She Would Last Forever begins with "An Error Occurred", a convivial albeit mysterious and energetic primer that then dives into the tight percussion and pensive vocals of "Just What I've Always Wanted". The title track is a dramatic cut which transcends slickly into the rasping synth, and recoiling bass of "Needed You" accompanied by the entrancing vocals of Loic Fleury from Isaac Delusion. "Spazieren" is a ten-minute leisurely passage through dystopia that has been crafted with finesse. "Blackout" is a minor key track whose lead synth is focused around an arpeggiator to create suspense. "Seascape", a melancholic ambient track which shifts into the more energetic percussion of "Not Far Away From You", picking up pace once again. "Rinjani" is a melodic and menacing march with pulsing synth lines, leading expertly to the final track. "Dystopia" blends otherworldly sounds from the distant future with percussion and reverb, creating space in the musical landscape and bringing Abstraxion's second album to an expansive and poignant close. Mixed by Francis Harris.

Ripperton's mark on "Spazieren" is one of meticulous sound design and textures, complemented by a poignant vocal that provides a wicked ambience. INIT's remix has been crafted with precision - an unhurried and mysterious track that builds and anticipates smoothly due to the precise instrumentation and adept reverb that's been applied on the vocal. Conforce delivers a dark, forceful and abstract take on "Spazieren".

HAINO, KEIJI 1973 Live - Milky Way LP
Black Truffle present the first vinyl issue of Keiji Haino's Milky Way. Originally released as a limited CD in Japan by the short lived Mom 'N' Dad Productions in 1993, this release documents a blistering live performance recorded in Kyoto in 1973, five years before the formation of the first line-up of Fushitsusha, and eight years before Haino's first solo album. Working with a mysterious set-up including primitive electronics, homemade acoustic instruments, piano and voice, Haino lets loose a single 48-minute psychedelic maelstrom, marrying the immersive echo-fields of kosmische music to the rough and ready hands-on feel of classic 1960s live electronics à la MEV or Robert Ashley's Wolfman. Despite the absence of guitar, this recording clearly lays the groundwork for the epic blowouts which were to make Haino's name in years to come, building up to a point of almost unbearable intensity in its final minutes as Haino's voice wails over a wall of distorted DIY electronics. At times presaging the psychedelic noise of C.C.C.C., Milky Way shows Haino's singular intensity and ritualistic performance style already in full flower at this early date in his long career. Presented in raw and immediate room fidelity (complete with dramatic tape drop-out), this is both an essential historical document and a classic performance in its own right. Presented in a deluxe heavyweight sleeve with an inner sleeve featuring Haino's poetry in Japanese, with an English translation by Alan Cummings. Original design by Keiji Haino & Yasunori Arai. LP reissue design via Stephen O'Malley. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at D&M, Berlin June 2016.

ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS To Make A Fool Ask, And You Are The First LP
Ashtray Navigations's To Make A Fool picks up where the nerve-damaged exotica of 2015's A Shimmering Replica left off - acerbic "surf" guitar and synthetic salt-breeze fit for the Tropic of Yorkshire. Instant immersion in a potent, pungent psychedelia that feels equal parts cosmic and aquatic. What Phil Todd wrenches out of his instrument these days is a language unto itself - a helical, grieving howl, a (super)natural efflorescence, beyond earthly description - ur-rock and post-everything. Equal emphasis is given here to pulsating machine rhythms and lush keyboard textures, with contributions by Mel O'Dubhshlaine. There were pre-echoes of all this in the recent Fluctuants (2015) and Aero Infinite (2014), but To Make A Fool feels like the fullest expression of something which was only glimpsed in those earlier works. The side-long "Spray Two" - gently eddying string-pads gradually slashed with fraught piano improvisations - is a masterpiece in its own right. At its delirious peak, the whole thing boils over into brooding, arpeggiated noir-techno - Michael Mann's steadicam roaming Leeds's B-roads, some kind of tangerine nightmare - before finally cooling into a bleary starfield of pure and sumptuous hypno-tone. This is a trip, in the most skull-splitting, soul-crinkling sense of the word, but it soothes and heals as well. A circular and transformative journey to the other side of the underneath, and a landmark recording from one of the most adept and visionary nodes in Britain's freak-out underground.

VON DEYEN, ADELBERT Nordborg LP
LP version. Bureau B present a reissue of Adelbert Von Deyen's second album Nordborg, originally released in 1979. Electronic musician Adelbert Von Deyen's debut and sophomore album were released just a year apart from each other. Sternzeit (BB 237CD/LP) was followed by Nordborg, which featured only one track on each side. Again, Von Deyen took his time crafting a meditative maelstrom of ambient sounds. Von Deyen's debut album Sternzeit had caused quite a stir in 1978 in his home town of Lübeck, where the unconventional young artist found himself inundated with fan mail and booked for autograph sessions. His contract with Sky Records obliged him to deliver a set number of albums to the label - one per year. Enjoying financial independence, he was able to give up his job and focus exclusively on his music. Nordborg appeared in 1979 and featured just two tracks, one on each side. It was inspired by a short holiday in Nordborg on the Danish island of Alsen, which coincided with a violent blizzard. "Moonrise", the A-side title, is a slow motion improvisation on the rising of the moon on Nordborg. Opening with synths evocative of seagull cries, meditative soundscapes mesh together massive lead sounds in unhurried harmony. Winds swirl, synths twist into electronic spheres of sound, drifting without any clear dramatic structure. Immersed in introspection, Adelbert Von Deyen celebrates life in the moment. "Iceland", the B-side piece, is an acoustic interpretation of a snowstorm in Nordborg, Denmark, as remembered by Von Deyen. Perfect for Adelbert Von Deyen's artistic expression: sustained organ tones deliver beat frequencies, an electric piano pattern is lost in reverie, winds build through the ARP Odyssey, finally sinking into icy melancholy and detached organ tones. Towards the end we are reconciled by an almost sacral organ part which Adelbert Von Deyen brings full circle as he returns to the opening theme. Adelbert Von Deyen recorded the second album, like the first, on a Revox A77 tape machine in his little home studio. The instrument list echoes that of Sternzeit, with an ARP Odyssey performance synthesizer, a Farfisa VIP 233 organ, a Farfisa String-Orchestra, Hohner Clavinet D6 electric piano, rhythm computer and an electric guitar.

VON DEYEN, ADELBERT Atmosphere LP
LP version. Bureau B present a reissue of Adelbert Von Deyen's third album Atmosphere, originally released in 1980. Album number three from electronic musician Adelbert Von Deyen marks the end of his ambient phase. Whilst Atmosphere largely swathes listeners in familiarly vast expanses of sound, the driving analog drums of the opening track (Von Deyen's most successful, as it turned out) signal a shift towards electro-kraut terrain. Atmosphere showcases Adelbert Von Deyen at the peak of his powers. The opening track, "Timemachine", sees him launch into zestful electro-krautrock, aided and abetted by Wolfgang Zabba Lindner on drums. Lindner had already popped up in the early 1970s in a prog-rock combo by the name of Tomorrow's Gift and recorded an interesting experimental percussion album in 1974 with Carsten Bohn (Vollbedienung Of Percussion). He can also be heard on the second piece "Silverrain" (in rather less zestful mode). A further eight tracks follow - revolving around the theme of Atmosphere - layers of synths glide slowly by, accompanied by drones which resound for minutes on end. Beats and synth FX add to the air of contemplation. A huge amount of time and money went into the production of this album. Adelbert Von Deyen composed tirelessly in his home studio, experimenting with his synthesizers and searching for new sounds. Lars Hidde added the final touches, taking care of the mix and mastering at Star Studio, Hamburg. All in all, it was worth the effort. Atmosphere proved to be Adelbert Von Deyen's most successful album. In his biography he writes: "Reactions to this opus were extreme, but absolutely positive, especially in other countries. 'Timemachine' appeared on quite a few LP and CD compilations and became an instrumental hit, the single selling around fifty thousand copies!" If Adelbert Von Deyen's first two albums saw him strive for artistic and financial independence, Atmosphere marked the beginning of a metamorphosis. Atmosphere is still in the sphere of ambient electronica, but the first two tracks are indicative of a clear shift towards krautrock or electronic rock. Von Deyen's next album would head off in a different direction altogether. The soft rock ballads and socially critical lyrics of Eclipse (1981) came as a complete surprise.

CLUSTER Kollektion 06: Cluster (1971-1981) Compiled and Assembled by John McEntire CD
Cluster's influence on the development of electronic music cannot be overstated. The original trio of Conrad Schnitzler, Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius released two seminal albums as Kluster before Roedelius and Moebius replaced the 'K' with a 'C' and continued as a duo. They produced eight albums in their most innovative period between 1971 and 1981, two of them together with another pioneer of electronic music, Brian Eno. Cluster anticipated much of what would later emerge in such varied styles as industrial, ambient, electro and even synth-pop. Some call Cluster's music avant-garde, others krautrock or kosmische. Hence their first album, as a microcosm of their entire oeuvre, made the list of "100 Records That Set The World On Fire (While No One Was Listening)" in The Wire magazine. On Kollektion 06, John McEntire provides a collection of tracks spanning Cluster's first eight studio albums. John McEntire is a drummer/percussionist and recording engineer/producer. He is a founding and current member of Tortoise and The Sea & Cake; former contributing/touring member of Red Krayola and Gastr Del Sol. He has been the owner/operator of Soma Electronic Music Studios in Chicago, IL since 1995. Asmus Tietchens on Cluster: "Cluster's role in the development of new German electronic music went unnoticed for a long while. Cacophonous noise in the 1970s and 1980s masked the subtlety of Cluster aesthetics, diminishing their force of impact. Only since the 1990s, and all the more so today, have Cluster been identified and celebrated as pioneers. The somewhat hackneyed 'avant-garde' tag really amounts to nothing more than being ahead of one's time. And those who are ahead of their time often slip out of sight. Now, twenty, thirty years later, with so many new aural experiences on offer, listening habits have changed to such a great extent that we are better placed to assess Cluster's importance, their influence on subsequent generations of musicians. It has thus become easier to appreciate and enjoy their music... Cluster were no pedagogues, but their indirect influence on musicians and, more to the point, on listeners, resonates until today. Can a legacy be any more alive?" This collection features tracks from:Cluster 71 (BB 058CD/LP), Cluster II (LR 335LP), Zuckerzeit (LR 333LP), Sowiesoso (BB 039CD/LP), Cluster & Eno (BB 029CD/LP), After The Heat, Grosses Wasser (BB 026CD/LP), and Curiosum (BB 038CD/LP).

BAUMANN, PETER Romance 76 CD
Bureau B present a reissue of Peter Baumann's solo debut album Romance 76, originally released in 1976. From 1971 to 1977, Peter Baumann was a member of the legendary Berlin band Tangerine Dream. The group were pioneers of the so called Berliner Schule (Berlin School) which had a profound impact on electronic music. With Peter Baumann on board, Tangerine Dream grew into one of the most influential bands in electronic krautrock, sited somewhere between experimental electronica and progressive rock. Baumann's positive aura and eagerness to experiment galvanized the band's music almost instantaneously. His catchy melodies, rich in positivity, propelled Tangerine Dream into the charts. After five years of chart appearances, extensive touring and several albums, Baumann initiated his solo career with Romance 76. "Romance 76 resulted from the urge to create new music. I felt we had begun repeating ourselves in Tangerine Dream and I was keen to discover new things, to carry on experimenting. Improvisation had been common to us all, but on your own it isn't quite so simple." This shift in focus led him to leave Tangerine Dream towards the end of 1977. He and a friend set up the Paragon Studio in Berlin, which would earn a prominent place in music production history. Still a member of the band in 1976, Baumann rented a hall in the ufaFabrik, Berlin to record Romance 76. The influence of Tangerine Dream can clearly be heard on Romance 76, although the arrangements are comparatively minimalist. Sonic similarities to Tangerine Dream can be explained by the fact that the group used the same space for gig rehearsals, giving Baumann access to their instruments. The distinctive sound of a modular synthesizer system can be detected on Romance 76, for example, along with a mellotron. The minimal composition's airiness lends the unusual synth sounds space to unfold in all their glory. A state of affairs for which David Bowie is partially responsible, as Baumann recalls: "We were in Berlin and met him for dinner, then he would call in while I was recording the album, listening carefully to what I was working on. I explained to him what still needed to be done, but Bowie suggested: 'Leave it as it is, there's enough there already.' " At which point Baumann decided to look at the tracks in question as finished. This reissue includes extensive liner notes and rare photographs.

Bureau B present a reissue of Peter Baumann's second solo album Trans Harmonic Nights, originally released in 1979. From 1971 to 1977, Peter Baumann was a member of the legendary Berlin band Tangerine Dream. The group were pioneers of the so called Berliner Schule (Berlin School) which had a profound impact on electronic music. Trans Harmonic Nights sees Baumann continue to break free from the gravitational pull of Tangerine Dream. Hans-Joachim Roedelius was recording the Jardin Au Fou album (BB 023CD/LP) at the same time in his Paragon Studio and some of his carefree positivity seems to have rubbed off on Baumann, judging by the music he came up with. The production phase for Trans Harmonic Nights covered 16 months or thereabouts. Having built the studio and taken care of production on albums for Cluster, Asmus Tietchens, Conrad Schnitzler and Hans-Joachim Roedelius, many of which came out on the French label Egg, he had neither the time nor the inclination to focus on his own compositions. Numerous tracks on the album were actually created at the end of the working day, on downtime, just for fun in the unfinished studio. Peter Baumann explains: "It was a completely different time for music, everything we did was spontaneous, in the moment. My first two records happened when I was working in the studio, simply expressing myself as a musician, sensing which emotions, timbres, rhythms and melodies were closest to me." This approach shines through the music, underpinning its authenticity and making the album such a delight to listen to today: carefree, playful, unbelievably euphoric. Synth lines are exhilaratingly entwined with synthetic plucks, experimental sounds crystallize into sweet melodies, building into ecstatic breaks. Majestic mellotron choirs and added vocoder tones lend an ethereal, surreal touch. It is virtually impossible not to get caught up in this rapture, to be swayed by the infectiously upbeat nature of the music. Not long after releasing this album, Peter Baumann relocated to the USA where he recorded two more albums by the year 1983, dominated by wave and synth pop sounds. In 1984 he founded his own label, Private Music. In the late 1990s he withdrew from the music business altogether, only resurfacing in May 2016 with Machines Of Desire (BB 234CD/LP).

SCHNITZLER/SCHNEIDER TM, CONRAD Con-Struct CD
Conrad Schnitzler (1937-2011), composer and concept artist, was one of the most important representatives of Germany's electronic music avant-garde. A student of Joseph Beuys, he founded Berlin's legendary Zodiak Free Arts Lab, a subculture club in 1967/68, was a member of Tangerine Dream (with Klaus Schulze and Edgar Froese) and Kluster (with Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius) and also released countless solo albums. Schneider TM (Dirk Dresselhaus) has been involved in various musical fields since the late 1980s. Between 1989 and 1997 he played and sang in bands like Locust Fudge and Hip Young Things, before focusing more on electronic music from 1997 onwards, starting up his Schneider TM project. In 1999, Dresselhaus formed the duo Angel with Ilpo Väisänen. The Con-Struct series features Schnitzler's daily excursions through the sonic diversity of his synthesizers. He preserved these exceptional sounds for use in combination with each other in subsequent live performances, amassing a vast sound archive of his discoveries over time. When Jens Strüver, the producer of the Con-Struct series, was granted access to this audio library at the outset of the 2010 decade, he came up with the idea of constructing new compositions, not remixes, from the archived material. On completion of the first Con-Struct album, he decided to develop the concept into a series, with different electronic musicians invited into Schnitzler's unique world of sound. Schneider TM on his involvement: "I am very happy and honored to be invited to do an album for the Con-Struct series and wanted to do something special and genuine in this posthumous collaboration with Conrad Schnitzler. I wanted to get as close to his spirit as possible, so I created a musical situation as if we were actually collaborating together in the same room, with Conrad playing his pre-recorded sound-files or modular system and me dubbing and processing it live on the fly - almost as if it was a live-concert situation. Next to many other aspects of Schnitzler's vast oeuvre, I am fond of the noisy, poly-harmonic, poly-rhythmic and sometimes quite humorous minimalism of his music, as well as his way of using chance, which often leads to magical and raw beauty. There are no other sounds on this record except for ones created by Schnitzler, sent through my system and processed live. During the sessions I had the feeling of being in a conversation with him."

Originally released in 2014 (BASAEC 002EP), Cadenza call upon a brace of remixers to provide fresh interpretations of Luciano's "The Great Amael": a lo-fi bubbling groove with dusted Hammond organs, live percussion cuts and oceanic atmospherics. Matthew Dear, AKA Audion, melts stuttering sine waves and bulging tones over concrete beats, tweaking in the original organ riff while adding additional vocal on his remix. Phil Moffa and Seth Troxler's "LSOS LOVE/GOD" remix sees the duo steer through breathy vocal cuts and propelling bass, stripping the remix back before leaping back into hyperspace with some adventurous and dubbed out vibes.

MOTOR CITY DRUM ENSEMBLE Selectors 001 2LP
What is a "Selector"? Dekmantel has long been determined to find out. The first compilation comes from Motor City Drum Ensemble. These are not mix CDs; every Selectors compilation will include a collection of hand-picked, unmixed tracks personally curated by the artist. Motor City Drum Ensemble (a.k.a. Danilo Plessow) has been digging for records since his teenage years, and his DJing has become the stuff of legend. In truth, Plessow's relationship with Dekmantel dates back to the earliest days of the Motor City Drum Ensemble project, making him a natural candidate to head up the inaugural Selectors compilation. As expected, he's thrown himself into the task; selecting a want list from his collection of 15,000 records was no easy task, but getting permission for the final tracklist was even tougher. One song in particular, Raphael Green's "Don't Mess With The Devil," required him to personally call up a church in St. Louis, Missouri. "The guy, he's a Bishop," he says. "When the Ferguson protests were happening, for example, he was on CNN explaining his thoughts on the whole thing, so he's a known public figure, but nobody really knew that he had this amazing record that was recorded in '79 or '80. His voice is just unbelievable. It's the kind of record that when I heard it the first time, I couldn't believe that there had only been like 100 copies pressed, and that this wasn't actually big." Motor City Drum Ensemble's record bag is full of these kinds of gems, but he has no qualms about sharing a few of his secret weapons with a wider audience. "I wanted to get some of the stuff that is really, really hard to get, and make it available for younger people," he explains. "I used to be in the same situation. Back when I was 18, I would listen to a Rainer Truby mix and he would only play these $400 Brazilian records. I was like, 'Fuck, how am I ever going to be able to afford these?' I was glad when there was a reissue, and it's a bit the same with the compilation now. Basically," he explains, "the approach for the compilation was, 'If I walked into a record store, what kind of compilation would I buy?' That's what I did." Features: DJ Slym Fas, House Of Jazz, 20 Below, Risque III, Licky, Raphael Green, Ahzz and Bill Deal.

"Closing Title Song" heads into deep soaring territory, it's forward house beat and pulsing synth lead intertwine with loose tropical percussion and a rhapsodic horn hook. Laurence Guy takes on "Closing Title Song" and turns it into a '90s break-beat acid galore of ecstasy-tingled UK house. The EP wraps up the rave session with "Backyard Stories", a raw and bouncing, bass face inducing jam.

RAKSIN, DAVID Too Late Blues LP
Doxy present David Raksin's original soundtrack for Too Late Blues, directed by John Cassavetes and released in 1961. Too Late Blues is certainly one of the greatest films ever made about the jazz world; It was a perfect match between subject matter and filmmaker. In 1959, Cassavetes had starred in a TV series called Johnny Staccato, playing a jazzman who moonlights as a detective. The film's brilliant music score is courtesy of David Raksin and performed by such jazz legends as Benny Carter, Red Mitchell and Shelly Manne. Raksin's theme tune, mimed by the main character "Ghost" Wakefield's group during the opening credits, immediately establishes the film's cool, sardonic tone, and neatly mimics the attitude with which the actors deliver their lines. The easy way out would have been to do standards, but Raksin wrote all original music for the film, even for the source cues. Edition of 500.

Doxy present a picture disc reissue of Henry Mancini's soundtrack for Breakfast at Tiffany's, originally released in 1961. In a career spanning over four decades, composer, conductor and arranger Enrico "Henry" Mancini (1924-1994) won numerous Academy and Grammy awards for his scores to well-known films and television series, including The Pink Panther, Hatari! (1962), Two For The Road (1967), Wait Until Dark (1967), Peter Gunn (1967), and of course, 1961's Breakfast at Tiffany's (which alone won five Grammys and two Oscars). The Breakfast at Tiffany's soundtrack is probably best remembered for Audrey Hepburn's legendary performance of Mancini's "Moon River" (lyrics by Johnny Mercer), which won an Academy Award for Best Song that year. Herrmann began writing scores for Alfred Hitchcock in 1955, but the apex of this collaboration came undoubtedly with the scoring of 1960's Psycho, where Herrmann's amazing ability to set the mood made the soundtrack to Psycho perhaps the most memorable in the history of cinema. HERRMANN, BERNARD Vertigo PIC. DISC
Doxy present a picture disc reissue of Bernard Herrmann's soundtrack for Vertigo, originally released in 1958. Herrmann wrote the bulk of the score for Vertigo, considered by many critics and by Herrmann himself to be his finest film score, in a little over a month. Hitchcock places Herrmann's background music in direct opposition to music that is played deliberately as part of the action of the film. While Herrmann's score represents the forces of destiny and the mysterious dream world inhabited by Madeleine, music that Midge plays on her radio and record player represents her world and the norms and strictures of conventional society. Herrmann scored the swirling harps and strings that imbue most of the pivotal action sequences in the film to mirror the vertigo that dogs the protagonist. Essential.

SUN RA & THE BLUES PROJECT Batman And Robin PIC. DISC
Doxy present a picture disc reissue of Sun Ra & The Blues Project's Batman And Robin, originally released in 1966. The album is entirely instrumental, except for someone singing "Batmaaaan!" in the theme song. But the interesting thing about this album, and what makes it an absolute cult gem, are the musicians who are behind it all: basically a joint collaboration between Sun Ra's Arkestra and Danny Kalb's Blues Project (one of the first psychedelic rock bands as well as one of the world's first jam bands). "Dan and Dale" were actually blues guitarist Danny Kalb and Steve Katz (later of Blood, Sweat And Tears) on dueling guitars, while Sun Ra and Al Kooper take over organ duties (a Hammond B-3) and members of Ra's Arkestra play sax.

2016 repress; LP version. Rids the World of the Curse of the Vampires (1981) not only ably displays Scientist's varied approach, but also clocks in as one of his best outings. Scientist keeps things lively with plenty of reverb and echo-treated percussion, ghostly piano parts, video game sound effects, and other wobbly interjections from the mixing board. The record's expert evocation of the Halloween spirit also includes some fiendishly-voiced intros, the cover art's cartoon potpourri of horror film characters, and the dubious claim made in the liner notes that Scientist mixed it all at midnight on Friday the 13th. VA Sky Girl 2LP
New 2016 repress. Sky Girl is a mysteriously unshakeable companion, a deeply melancholic and sentimental journey through folk-pop, new wave and art music micro presses that span 1961-1991. It's a DIY collection of different genres, from different countries across different decades, that are all bound by the same longing sentiment. A concept compilation! A seemingly disparate suite of selections of forgotten fables by more or less never-knowns, Sky Girl forms a beautifully coherent and utterly sublime whole deftly compiled by French collectors DJ Sundae and Julien Dechery. From Scott Seskind's adolescent musical road movie to Karen Marks' icy Oz-wave, the charming DIY storytelling of Italian-American go-getter Joe Tossini and the ethereal slow dance themes of Parisian artists Nini Raviolette and Hugo Weris, Sky Girl resonates on a wide spectrum historically, geographically and stylistically. It unites in a singular, longing, almost intangible ambience. If the names sound wholly unfamiliar that doesn't matter, the nature of the compositions swiftly nurtures an intimacy with these lonely, poignant, openhearted wanderers. Most were available in a very limited capacity at the time of their release, some were never really released at all - Gary Davenport declined to release "Sarra" after he split with the girl for whom the track is named - years later a friend convinced Davenport to allow him to put 100 copies online to sell and DJ Sundae was quick enough to snare one. Beyond their scarcity, these tracks are bound together by a certain raw beauty that's achievable when music is made and no one is listening. Sky Girl comprises of fifteen officially licensed songs, a two year international scavenger hunt through long-folded home label operations, the depths of internet forums and traceless acetates. Both compilers are well trained record sleuths - DJ Sundae's labels Hollie and Idle Press have reissued Arthur Russell affiliate Nirosta Steel and DIY relic Pitch, while Julien Dechery previously compiled Fire Star, a retrospective on Tamil film composer Ilaiyaraaja, for Bombay Connection. Released by popular NTS show "Noise In My Head" offshoot Efficient Space, Sky Girl is enriched with artwork from Perks and Mini mutant Misha Hollenbach and appropriately elegant sleeve notes courtesy of Ivan Smagghe. Includes digital download. Also features: Linda Smith, Bruce Langhorne, The Seraphims, Some of My Best Friends Are Canadians, The Rising Storm, Warfield Spillers, Joyce Heath, Angel, Nora Guthrie and Once.

MOKADELIC Gomorrah (Original Soundtrack) PIC. DISC
The original soundtrack of Gomorrah, the acclaimed Italian television crime drama inspired by Roberto Saviano's 2008 best-selling book Gomorrah. Gomorrah received unprecedented critical acclaim all over the world. The Guardian (UK) called it "The unmissable, ultimate mafia show" and German magazine Spiegel-Online says, "Forget the Sopranos, here they are the Savastanos!" The music from both seasons of Gomorrah is composed and performed by Mokadelic, a Rome based psychedelic-post-rock collective, specializing in music for film. The music of Mokadelic is influenced by the contemporary sounds of such names as Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, and Godspeed You Black Emperor, without forgetting the lessons from the great Italian soundtrack composers of the sixties and seventies. The soundtrack has an eclectic sound palette that alternates from spacious, melancholic atmospheres to extremely dense climaxes. It's an emotionally intense musical narrative, deeply inspired by Gomorrah's haunting realism. Presented here for the first time on picture disc.

Mokadelic is considered the best Italian psychedelic-post-rock collective, a powerful band influenced by both the great Italian soundtrack composers of the '60s and '70s, and by bands such as Mogwai, Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Explosions In The Sky. After years of experience in the field of film music, including collaborations with directors such as Gabriele Salvatores and Stefano Sollima, Mokadelic became world famous thanks to their original soundtrack to the Italian TV series, Gomorrah (GDM 2101CD/LP, GDM 6650LP, 2016). That soundtrack was an emotionally intense musical narrative, including both spacious, melancholic atmospheres and extremely dense climaxes, all inspired by the haunting realism of the TV series. Chronicles appears to be their first stand-alone album since 2006; the first piece of work with no connections to film soundtracks or other special projects. A highly dense double set of music including a first volume (tracks 1-8) of post-rock oriented soundscapes, strategically followed by a heavy, electronics inspired second chapter (tracks 9-16). "Sleep One Eyed" features Nicolò Fabi.

MORRICONE, ENNIO La Classe Operaia Va In Paradiso LP
Goodfellas present a reissue of Ennio Morricone's soundtrack for La Classe Operaia Va In Paradiso, originally released in 1971. La Classe Operaia Va in Paradiso was another strike for maestro Ennio Morricone, one of the most in-demand composers and arrangers of the time. Avant-garde and slo-funk - with scary fuzz and wah-wah guitars - collide on the track "Metamorfosi" and before you know it, you are in the same vertigo generated by Gruppo D'improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza. Classical and lush orchestrations are found, while pounding rhythms are the main course for the original theme: a violin solo offers a dramatic view of the main score just before an aggressive guitar break enters the psych-o-rama. The movie directed by Elio Petri was a dramatic take on the main social issue of the early '70s, dealing with the heavy conditions of the working class. This is one of the most sought-after soundtracks of Morricone's experimental side, evident by the original tribute set by John Zorn for The Big Gundown in 1986 ("Metamorfosi" was then performed by a who's who cast of stars featuring Vernon Reid, Bob James and Diamanda Galas).

RODAP & FREGATE ORCHESTRA, CLAUDE Syn-Ka LP
Granit Records present a reissue of Claude Rodap & Fregate Orchestra's Syn-Ka, originally released in 1982. The French West Indies continue to deliver some obscure gems and this one, after a long time waiting in the dust and anonymity, resurfaces. This private press was originally conceived in 1982, in a context where many French Caribbean musicians were searching for their own style and fusing traditional musical heritages (gwo-ka, bel air, biguine) and synthetic music. Claude Rodap's Syn-Ka sums it all up. This amazing album crosses many styles, from synth music merged with bel-air and gwo ka, cosmic reggae, electronic proto-disco, zouk and spacey jazz funk. Comes with an insert in French, English and Japanese.

SHY LAYERS Shy Layers LP
Whether floating free to antipodean ambience or toasting the sunset with a Baltic beauty, you can always count on Growing Bin to take you someplace new for a while. Swapping bucolic Poland for the buzz of the Big Apple, the Hamburg imprint reaches a magnificent seven in the company of synth-pop dreamer Shy Layers (JD Walsh) and his sublime self-titled debut. Over the course of ten emotional pop serenades, the New York musician recalls lost days sofa surfing to the lounge electronica of Air, Mellow and early Phoenix or the swooning lo-fi psychedelia of a pre-MD Simian. Shy Layers welcomes listeners aboard with the shimmering pads and soothing soft synths of "Black and White", a drifting soundtrack to a John Hughes-directed episode of In The Night Garden. From there we swerve into the wistful synth-pop of "Famous Faces", locking into the rattling Tears For Fears groove while the west coast guitar licks and vocoder vocals float off into the distance. "You Won't Find Me" shuffles through Afro-tronic keyboard lines, Beta Band breakbeats and loose funk guitar before the sweltering "Stabilized Waves" dips a toe in the Mediterranean, swaying gently to the fluid bass, acoustic strumming and cascading electric guitar. Swapping continents to close the A-side, "Too Far Out" finds Walsh working highlife guitars and fuzzy sanza sequences into a piece of perfect off-kilter pop. The B-side begins in glitchy fashion with the flying hats and seesaw synths of "Holding It Back", before "Playing The Game" offers sprinklers over summer lawns, dub fx, jangling guitars and cooing vocals. The Afro-beat influence shines through once again on the rhythmic "Bees and Bamboo" before "SEG" sees Shy Layers don Mario's red wing cap for a chip-set safari through the bright blue sky. Playing us out with the same cinematic splendor with which Shy Layers began, Walsh conjures a woozy, sun-dappled mood for the sumptuous "1977". Fusing French pop, glistening Americana, '80s AOR and Afro-beat into a hazy vision of balmy mornings, long evenings and lazy days, Shy Layers has served up the soundtrack for any summer.

It feels like P Jam took himself to King Jammy's studio and turned out this absolute banger - already getting a lot of pirate and underground club rotation. P Jam called upon Champion for "Chalice", which leans more towards the Studio One sound, and is also reminiscent of the early days of DMZ and FWD.

GLITTER WIZARD Hollow Earth Tour CD
Glitter Wizard are a band of California riff-lords pillaging the best of vintage hard rock while keeping their laser eyes on the future, creating a unique brand of oddball psychedelia. Their onstage performance is a glammed-up force to be reckoned with and they've been taking their act on the road from the west coast all the way to Europe. The San Francisco glam weirdos Glitter Wizard release Hollow Earth Tour on Heavy Psych Sounds. The alliance continues the label's successful run of Californian hookups - see also: Wild Eyes, Farflung, Hot Lunch, Fatso Jetson, etc. - and when it comes to Glitter Wizard, they come off as the kind of band who are way too busy writing the next album by the time the current one has been released to worry about the particulars. Nonetheless, their strange, vaguely subversive and often catchy heavy rock and roll is at its best on Hollow Earth Tour.

FREEKS, THE Shattered (Green Vinyl) LP
Green vinyl version. Everything has a beginning, whether it by accident or by design. A journey consists of trials and errors until finally reaching a full circle - ever evolving, revolving over and over again. Set in constant motion, the gathering of speed reaching ultimate vibrations until it's all shattered! This can also be said in regards to Los Angeles, California based quintet The Freeks as they return from yet another complete orbit with their third full length album, Shattered. What started as an accident, brought on a thought, which then began a project that grew into a solidified unit of sonic purification. The Freeks, led by Ruben Romano, have consistently moved upward since their conception in 2007 and have gracefully matured since their first self-titled album in 2008 on Cargo Records. While the initial project collaborated with players from around world, in 2010, Romano gathered together a more local unit of musicians, all baked under the LA heat, to achieve a consistent flow of creation. This was followed by The Freeks critically acclaimed 2013 sophomore album Full On, released on the band's very own label Freek Flag Records. Now in 2016, The Freeks prepare to sling shot and extend the trajectory of their already existing orbital path by joining forces with Heavy Psych Sounds to release this latest revolution. The Freeks are fully ready to shake it until it's all shattered. Since The Freeks issued their aptly-titled sophomore full-length Full On, their reputation as a vibrant live act has only grown. Shattered is a mix of the old Nebula style, mixing heavy fuzz riffs of desert rock n roll with a fresh breath of a new wave, adding synthesizers, keyboards and more arrangements. Features ex-members of Fu Manchu and Nebula.

CARETAKER, THE An Empty Bliss Beyond This World LP
Limited repress. The second album from James Leyland Kirby's alias The Caretaker, originally released in 2011 following 2008's Persistent Repetition Of Phrases (HAFTW 003CD). By now regarded an absolute classic of haunted ambient music, An Empty Bliss Beyond The World returns the doddering protagonist to the deserted ballroom, wandering its waxed floor and dilapidated grandeur in an attempt to capture an era which has long since disappeared but still haunts the atmosphere. James Leyland Kirby conjures a quieter, more introspective spirit, lost in his own mind amidst a low-lit labyrinth of ever-decaying and antediluvian shellac phrases. Sourced from his mysterious collection of 78s, these vague snippets of archaic sonics reflect the ability of Alzheimers patients to recall the songs of their past, and with them recollections of places, people, moods and sensations. The effect is subtly amplified by the chronic mastering at D&M, allowing each memory to segue seamlessly and unpredictably into the next for an otherworldly and disorienting experience. An Empty Bliss Beyond The World is a highly potent transmission from one of the most singular characters operating in music today. James Leyland Kirby, is also known as Leyland Kirby, The Stranger and V/VM. Mastered and cut by Lupo. Artwork features another specially commissioned painting by Ivan Seal.

CARETAKER, THE Everywhere At The End Of Time LP
Everywhere At The End of Time is the first in a series of six albums by The Caretaker, aka James Leyland Kirby, slowly cataloguing the stages of early onset dementia. Each album will reveal new points of progression, loss and disintegration, progressively falling further and further towards the abyss of complete memory loss and nothingness. Viewing dementia as a series of stages can be a useful way to understand the illness, but it is important to realize that this only provides a rough guide to the progress of the condition. Drawing on a recorded history of 20 years of recollected memories, this is one final journey and study into recreating the progression of dementia through sound. As the first in the series - and despite its typically frayed loop construction, this volume is the most lucid - subsequent instalments will continue to move into faded obscurity and material erosion. Mastered and cut by Andreas Lupo Lubich. Artwork by Ivan Seal.

Jazzman Records present the first reissue of Mor Thiam's Dini Safarrar (Drums Of Fire), originally released in small numbers as a custom pressing in 1973. The compelling Dini Safarrar by Senegalese drummer Mor Thiam has gained cult status around the world amongst enthusiasts of jazz, funk, hip hop and African music, and has achieved grail status among LP collectors. Faithful to the original and made with the blessing and cooperation of Mor Thiam himself, as well as his son Aliaume Thiam, otherwise known as hip hop and R&B superstar Akon. Mor Dogo Thiam (pronounced "Chahm") is a cultural historian, dedicated philanthropist and genius on the djembe. He began his career as a drummer while a young boy in his native Senegal before moving to St. Louis, Missouri in the early 1970s, where his unique musical skills earned him the respect of the local jazz community. A fusion of the traditions of his Senegalese upbringing and the funk and jazz sounds of his new environs, Dini Safarrar was entirely self-funded and was also conceived as a benefit album, with all the proceeds donated to famine relief in Africa. The subtitle and translation of Dini Safarrar is "Drums Of Fire", though it may be more aptly described as "Drums Of Krakatoa", such is the explosive intensity captured within the grooves. The multitude of pulsating percussive elements throughout each track creates an intense rhythmic dissonance, the musical equivalent of an erupting volcano. It can be no coincidence that the energy and passion of Akon's music was duly ignited by his father's very same Drums Of Fire. May the legacy continue, God bless Akon.

VA Pop Ambient 2017 CD
Pop Ambient, Kompakt's longest-running compilation series after Total, sees its 2017 installment. Features exclusive material from acclaimed genre veterans and series newcomers Jens-Uwe Beyer, Yui Onodera + Scanner, Max Würden, Leandro Fresco, Thore Pfeiffer, Kenneth James Gibson and Soulsavers remixed by Wolfgang Voigt. Following his own cues from preceding entries, Pop Ambient chief curator Voigt again strikes a perfect ratio of established producers and debuting guests. From Jens-Uwe Beyer's atmospheric soundscapes, to Thore Pfeiffer's glitch romance "Good Life", Leandro Fresco's beatific drone fests, as well as Kenneth James Gibson's melancholic epic "Her Flood Knocked Me To The Ground (But I Was Already There)". Other returning artists include Anton Kubikov of SCSI-9 fame (with electronic reverie "Dekka") and Cologne sound-smith Max Würden, who was last seen releasing wonderfully immersive albums on BineMusic and Wolfgang Voigt's very own Exponate series. His guitar-infused, dubbed-out cut "Fernfeld" and the mysterious electronic mantra "186.000 Miles Per Second" are particularly striking renditions of the rich sonic narratives possible in Pop Ambient. For the 2017 release, Kompakt welcome Tokyo-based Yui Onodera; a trained musician and architectural acoustic designer by trade, Onodera embeds diverse influences from traditional sound design, film scores, contemporary composition and electro-acoustic experimentation in his work, resulting in intricate drone sculptures and sound skylines. This skill set gels naturally with the sonic sensibilities of iconic experimental composer Scanner who teams up with Onodera for the cut "Locus Solus". Wolfgang Voigt himself makes an appearance as remixer, turning the track "Hal" from electronic-rock-gospel duo Soulsavers's 2015 album Kubrick into a voluptuous and immersive sound journey. It's the cherry on top of a particularly fluffy cake that will prove irresistible to any connoisseur of ambient music.

VA Le Pop: La Boum! (Les Chansons De La Nouvelle Scene Francaise) CD
A special edition in the Le Pop series, La Boum is a party compilation that shows just how danceable and versatile the modern chanson is - It is clever, energetic, full of humor and extremely diverse. Since the beginning of the series, the Le Pop DJ team (Oliver Fröschke and Rolf Witteler) have promoted their compilations by playing them at release parties and at special events like German-French festivities. Over the years, some tracks have emerged as favorites, a sure way to get people on the dancefloor time and time again. The series has always been rhythmically diverse, but a compilation of new francophone music, with one track as danceable as the next, is something the Le Pop DJ team has dreamt of for a long time. The span of musical variety on this album could not be broader. From the playfully cutesy opener "Polka" to the crude '60s-garage hit finale "Voulez- Vous Coucher Avec Moi?", Le Pop La Boum takes the listener on both a geographical and a stylistic journey past the most daring corners of the world of francophone music. From southern French dancehall to the YéYé-punk colossus "Bordel" - from the indie party-hit "Singapore Slang" from Montréal to the recklessly drummed, high-speed rock'n'roll track "Corinne" by Mathieu Boogaerts. Even Benjamin Biolay shows himself in a new light, as a Cumbia crooner singing in duet with the Uruguayan-Argentinian reggae singer Alika. Julian Baer's chanson-funk and the young newcomer Cléa Vincent's retro disco track are equally refreshing. Just like all other editions of this series, Le Pop La Boum not only works well on the dancefloor, but it is a compilation that can be enjoyed at home as well. There are also plenty of new names to check out, that have previously not been featured by Le Pop; Apart from Mathieu Boogaerts, Alexis HK and Benjamin Biolay, all names introduced on Le Pop La Boum are new. La Boum is the third special edition in the Le Pop series, after the duet sampler En Duo (LPM 004LP, 2004) and Les Filles (2008), and throws an entirely new light on the vibrant neo-chanson scene. Also features: Luce, Radiomatic, Call Me Poupee, Arthur H Et -M-, Oai Star, Fabulous Trobadors, Noze, Thomas Dutronc, Agnes Bihl Et Tom Poisson, Alister, and Marcel Bontempi.

AMIINA Fantomas CD
Amiina's latest adventure, Fantômas, was originally composed as a live score to a silent masterpiece from 1913. Amiina's members decided right from the start that the music would also be able to stand on its own, independent of the visual narrative. Fantômas is melancholic and ethereal, yet full of suspense, pounding rhythms, and haunting melodies; A sound world full of contrasts, from darkness and utter terror, to heavenly melodies. The music thoughtfully composed, reoccurring themes and lied-motives build up a delicate structure where the listener can experience the piece as one entity - and then again different tracks or songs can be enjoyed independently. Violin, cello, drums, percussion, metallophone, table harp, ukulele, and electronics are the source material for the sound world of Amiina here, but it is expanded upon with their intelligent and imaginative usage of the different instruments and their varied and endless textures. The score Fantômas premiered in Paris in 2013 at the prestigious, Théâtre du Châtelet, where Amiina, together with musicians James Blackshaw, Tim Hecker, Loney Dear, and Yann Tiersen, took part in a special Halloween event, celebrating the centenary of the Fantômas series, directed by the French film director Louis Feuillade in 1913-1914. The Fantômas series - in five parts - ran for six hours with every musician/band providing their new live score for the series, the music commissioned by Yann Tiersen who curated the event. A huge success right from the beginning, Fantômas is an early example of the interplay between avant-garde intellectual and emerging mass culture, highly regarded by the French avant-garde of the 1920s, especially the surrealists, e.g. René Magritte and Guillame Apollinaire, the latter stating that "from the imaginative standpoint, Fantômas is one of the richest works that exist." When the magical, somewhat fragile sound world of Amiina meets the lord of terror something, unexpected and truly magical happens. KUBIK, LADISLAV Flashes Of Light CD
Flashes Of Light, composed in 2014-15, connects the classical concept of a concerto with a provocatively unusual sound, made possible by the combination of brass and percussion instruments with four pianos. Historically, writings for multiple pianos have been very rare (i.e. works by Antheil, Glass, G.F. Haas, Reich, Spahlinger, Wyschnegradsky), and always originate from the composers's specific intent or stylistic concept. In Ladislav Kubík's work, the use of four pianos is for the multiplication of the piano's characteristics, including the ability to produce highly sophisticated inner textures and, of course, to substantially extend all technical possibilities of the instrument. Yet, despite existing within this atypical ensemble, the piano maintains its usual idiomatic character as it has absorbed three centuries of musical development. The piano section appears as a homogeneous body and presents a wide variety of musical possibilities, ranging anywhere from the lyrical cantilena to intense percussive passages. All individual instrumental parts are very demanding and their relative importance to the ensemble as a whole is well balanced. However, at the center of the composition is the first solo trumpet. Ladislav Kubík (born in 1946 in Prague, Czechoslovakia) studied composition and music theory at the Prague Academy of Music. Kubík has received many awards for his compositions including the Guggenheim Fellowship, distinctions at the International Rostrum of Composers UNESCO, the Intervision Prize, and the International Franz Kafka Prize. Commissioned by the prestigious organizations in Europe and America, his works have been performed in nearly 30 countries. He served as an adjudicator in major world music competitions and established his own "Ladislav Kubík International Prize in Composition". Ladislav Kubík resides in the United States where he is a professor of composition at Florida State University. As a sought-after pedagogue he appears yearly at the CASMI International Summer Courses in Prague. O. XANDER From Antarctica With Love 12"
"There was much discussion about whether O Xander - AKA DJ Rei Ayanami - was actually from Antarctica. Either way, he's decided to roll with the theme on this fine follow-up, From Antarctica With Love. The EP's five tracks variously touch on icy electro ('Snowspeeder Blues'), windswept acid ('Thru Our Veins'), glacial electronica ('A Perfect Balance'), and clanking, mechanical techno (the deep but metallic 'Full Spectrum'). The latter track is also featured in Juniper Dub form, with the Smallville and meandyou duo excelling at combining cut-up melody snippets with rolling, drum machine rhythms." -- Juno.

HOWARD, JOHN Across The Door Sill LP
LP version. When John Howard's 1975 album Kid In A Big World was reissued to wide acclaim in 2003, it marked his return to writing and recording after twenty years of silence. Recorded over a twelve-month period, Across The Door Sill features many layered pianos and vocals. Whereas John Howard & The Night Mail (TR 317CD/LP, 2015) was a "band album", Door Sill is very much a solo work. With five brand new songs investigating the process of dreams and how one can imagine crossing previously unseen thresholds; embarking on new adventures and challenges, through differing timelines, the album was inspired by 13th century poet Rumi's quatrains. One can hear the influence of John's own songwriter heroes - Laura Nyro and Roy Harper in particular - with its long-form, languidly organic compositions and eschewal of the usual verse/chorus/middle-eight song structure. "An album that will take a few listens, I think," says John.

REX ILUSIVII Koncert SNP 1983 LP
Koncert SNP 1983 is another installment in the archive uncoverings of Rex Ilusivii, aka Mitar Suboti? - a live concert from SNP (Srpsko narodno pozoriste/Serbian national theatre) in Novi Sad, Serbia. Again it's a sublime masterclass in layering and mixing from the much revered king of illusion. "To this day Rex Ilusivii remains an enigma of the global music culture, caught between late cold war electronic spheres, classic and the power of found sound. A musician from the Southeast European counterculture, whose art today seems to be the worldly intelligence of the modern age. Listening to the early music of Mitar Suboti? sounds like catching the future even though you know here sounds the past. How can somebody be light years ahead of most of his contemporaries in terms of individuality and uncompromising vision, creating such musical narratives with a feeling for outer-national space? It must have been the signs of his time in Yugoslavia that lead him to compositions in which two or more antithetic forces fight each other for the cause of an unheard harmony that melts industrial, sample art, musique concrète and ambient. His Koncert SNP from 1983 demonstrates his ingeniousness to the core - about 38 minutes of experiment and appeal that move playful between demonstrative frankness and seductive sensuality. You hear pulsating synthesizer bliss, widescreen sample art full of Bosch-like images and elusively drama catchiness that absorbs deep. So deep that words can't express their meaning. Only notes can spell out the score. Listening to his live recording several times without a break reveals also a story arc of literary transcendence. And as transcendence is something beyond speech, the music of Rex Ilusivii can't be narrowed down in phrases. Only one thing must be recommended: surrender to it and it will surrender to you." -- Michael Leuffen, June 2016.

BARKER & BAUMECKER Turns CD
Sam Barker and Andreas Baumecker's lives have always revolved around different kinds of music. That's partly why their productions as Barker & Baumecker are more unpredictable, harder to pin down than what you might expect from a label borne out of a techno club. And while their music is clearly built for dancing, listening to it reveals a deep love and respect for many forms of electronic music. Their second album, Turns, is an amalgamation of their unique musical minds, transcending electronic music genres and styles, while further developing and refining the Barker & Baumecker sound aesthetic. With two EPs, an album, and almost 20 remixes under their belt, Barker & Baumecker continue to steadily explore and reshape their shared electronic musical interests, especially in techno, bass, breaks, and experimental terrain. Talking about the title of the album, Barker explains, "the two of us have had quite a lot of ups and downs since the last record, and when you're in a collaboration where you only work together in real-time, in person, both people need to be in the right frame of mind." Baumecker adds, "Turns also had something to do with the tracks - almost every one turns towards the middle." While none of the tracks on Turns are merely functional, Barker & Baumecker do, of course, envision them in the club. There's nothing typical about any of these tracks, but they each share a clean aesthetic and sound palette with a sense of depth and compositional purpose. The ambient intro of album opener "Senden" morphs into a Reichian flow. The low-end drums of "Encipher & Decipher" weigh down the dreamy melodic synths. "Club Entropicana" reduces rhythm and sound to machine signals, akin to Raster-Noton's starkness. Both "Turnhalle" and "Nocturnal" incorporate trance euphoria with break-beats but in different ways, while closer "Statik" has a deliciously slippery garage pulse guiding it through a journey towards house bliss. Never knowing where they'll draw from next, Turns feels like Barker & Baumecker are expanding and refining their own musical dialect. Like most of the music they're both drawn to, it's thoughtful, rich, and ever evolving, but always and completely committed to the club.

The sophomore release on the Ouïe imprint brings three more killer cuts into the universe. Made up of the German production outfit NU, this EP is full of groove laden sunshine vibes. "Endup" is the lead track - a swingy, Afro-tinged disco outing with warm, trippy percussion and a hypnotic, joyful vocal sample. "Cosa Mia" slows things down - a chugging beat and Balearic vibe, enhanced by a beautiful string section. "Palomita" delivers a similar feel, but with slightly more drive to it - shifting from a mid-tempo groover to a Latin hip shaker.

The Dutchman Anton Pieete has spent recent years exploring the reaches of his analog set up, and turns over his latest wares to Ovum, with The Menu. "Peven" is heady and intoxicating - it's percussive, funky drums and undulating keys are carried by a woozy wave of rich analog bass. The dramatic and ghostly strings of "BN 3000" are at odds with its frenetic bouncing bass melody and yet, they work in complete harmony. "Lite Green" is a cosmic jam with a laser synths and a malleable, swinging groove that's governed by a pulsating bassline and dense kick drum.

BRODIER, JACQUES Xhos De Villemahu 2LP
Penultimate Press present the second full length release by the acclaimed French inventor, instrument builder, musician, visual artist, researcher and writer Jacques Brodier. Following up the 2012 release Filtre De Réalité, Xhos De Villemahu expands Brodier's vision tenfold with two LP's worth of inexplicable audio recorded between 2009-2016. Operating from Le Havre, France since the 1970s, Jacques Brodier has created a uniquely personal vision that incorporates music, writings, paintings and drawings. Over the years he has amassed a large amount of material in all of these fields. The music he conjures from his self-built instrument, the Filtre De Réalité (Filter of Reality), harnesses the energies found in shortwave radio, harmonic strings, sensors, sheet metal and rotating glass spheres of sand. The resulting audio shatters time and space with voices of the deep past slamming up against a fantastic present. Frequencies dance in a whirl of frenzied excitement whilst elements of a cosmic science fiction leave a trail of neon lit bewilderment. A vast amount of writings, painting and drawings support the enormous world Brodier has constructed over the years. Xhos De Villemahu is an attempt to capture this substantial and significant world view into a complete package. Xhos De Villemahu arrives as a deluxe double LP in a gloss gatefold sleeve featuring a 32-page A4 booklet of images, essays and texts written by Brodier for the occasion. Utterly unique in vision and scope, Xhos De Villemahu is absolutely an experience unlike any other.

BOHREN & DER CLUB OF GORE Sunset Mission CD
Pias present a reissue of Sunset Mission, the 2000 album from Germany's doom jazz cult band Bohren & Der Club Of Gore. They are loved by musicians Mike Patton (Faith No More) and Stephen O'Malley (SunnO). For fans of SunnO, OM, Max Richter, Fennesz."The substance we are seeking here lies beyond the bare bones of fact, the when and the where (founded in 1988, Mülheim an der Ruhr) or personnel and instruments. The story is more than the sum of its facts. Mysteries may very well lurk here or there along the way. What keeps the final two founder members going after all this time? Do Morten Gass and Robin Rodenberg have skeletons locked in their closets? How dearly we would we love to know the answer to that one, alas the most beautiful puzzles tend to remain unsolved. Including their debut Gore Motel (1994), Bohren & Der Club Of Gore have amassed an impressive eight long players... Strange as it may seem, there is a uniform consistency to their reception. Whatever the band does, critiques are unfailingly positive, yet repetitious. Consider the arrival of Christoph Clöser in 1997, by way of illustration. When he joined the group, his saxophone replaced the departing Reiner Henseleit's guitar as one of the defining instruments in the band. This was arguably the sharpest break in their sound to this day and a significant marker in terms of the band's reverence for Dutch instrumentalists Gore (the clue is in the name), whose repetitive riffs paved the way for how the guitar would be deployed in a post-everything future... Similarly conspicuous by their absence in the Bohren chronicles are the numerous instruments which they added to the mix. The introduction of choirs at least had a clear visual impact. Since Thorsten Benning left at the end of 2015, the band has continued as a trio, sharing shifts on the drums. A decrease in personnel was conversely accompanied by quantum leaps forward in the group's musical development - or more precisely, minor adjustments triggered major effects. The music of Bohren & Der Club Of Gore opens up remarkable rooms of association, from a warm burrow to a pristine secret lodge, from a dusky woodland tavern to a smoky quayside dive... These sinister crackling songs are invitations to secrete oneself in darkness." --Lars Brinkman.

ELCADOS What Ever You Need CD
PMG present a reissue of Elcados's last record, What Ever You Need, originally released in 1979. "By the 1979 release of What Ever You Need, the Elcados were ready to party. 'We got rhythm, we got sound,' they declare on 'Funky Music'. Starting out as The Moonrakers in Kanu in 1968, Steve Black, Rocky Mustapha, Tony Nosika and Frank Martins spent the next decade gigging their way out of the north, including a surreal set with Khalifa Baba-Ahmed at the Miss New Nigeria contest. They released two rock-oriented albums in the mid '70s before hitting a disco/reggae groove on What Ever You Need. The album starts with the title track, a bouncy reggae number guaranteed to fill the dance floor. 'Cross Over Reggae' keeps the mood light before 'The World Is Full Of Injustice' delivers a bit of Rasta indignation. Funk monsters 'Marry The Poor' and 'Funky Music' bring it all home, reminding listeners that the guys didn't drag out their best shiny suits just to smoke spliffs. Sadly, What Ever You Need, was the last record the Elcados released. But they went out with the glitter ball burning brightly, dimmed but a little by the fug of the righteous herb." --Peter Moore.

S. JOB ORGANIZATION Freedom Anthem CD
PMG present a reissue of S. Job Organization's Freedom Anthem, originally released in 1978. "S. Job Organization (also known as SJOB Movement) was a rarity in the Nigerian music scene - a collective of equals in a world where band 'leaders' ruled the roost and 'band boys' had to make do with the crumbs. The name was an acronym representing each of the members - Samuel 'Spark' Abiloye, Johnnie Woode Olimah, Ehima 'Blackie' Ottah and Prince Bolarinwa Agba. They were music scene veterans and the nucleus of Sonny Okosuns's group, Ozziddi. Unshackled, their undeniable chemistry fizzed. Listen to a SJOB record and you can almost hear band members nodding their heads in appreciation of each others's mad skills. On Freedom Anthem, the music is deep, dark and funky. It took inspiration from the new sounds coming out of black America with a focus that was increasingly political. 'Ayamoto' calls for Africans to stand up for their rights. 'Freedom Anthem' is another funky call to arms. 'Oya' and 'Wombiliki' incorporate local folk sounds and a tinge of reggae for a distinctly African burnish. The egalitarian structure of SJOB eventually led to its demise. Without a dominant personality to galvanize the band, they lost direction. Johnnie Woode rejoined Ozziddi. Prince Bola joined King Sunny Ade. The great social experiment was over. But in Freedom Anthem, the magic it created lives on." --Peter Moore.

LEBARTY, AIGBE Unity CD
PMG present a reissue of Aigbe Lebarty's Unity, originally released in 1979. "In 1979, long-time highlife veteran Aigbe Lebarty decided to try his hand at high-energy disco funk. Checking the Lebartone Aces at the door, he borrowed the Sex Bombers from Prince Omo Lawal-Osula and created Unity, a sure-fire dance floor stomper that channels 'Ring My Bell' into a clarion cry for, well, unity ... and a good time. The title track is the undisputed highlight of the album. It rattles along in a wonky, skittish fashion, with the high-pitched toms dueling with the Sex Bombers in a musical game of Space Invaders. 'His Highness Erediauwa 1 Oba Of Benin' sees Aigbe slip back into highlife like a comfortable pair of slippers. The tracks were a gift to Erediauwa, who had just been crowned the 38th ruler of the Edo people in Benin City. Like eastern Nigeria, Benin City had remained a haven for highlife, so no surprises there. Spookily, the reissue of this album by PMG coincides with the passing of his Highness Erediauwa 1 and the coronation of his successor." --Peter Moore.

After The Funkees left for London, they stepped into the breach to become the champions of East Nigeria's flourishing post-war music scene. Based in Aba, and led by guitarist and charismatic chancer Walton Arungwa, they laid down a couple of singles with the city's newly-formed BEN label. EMI liked what they heard and in 1976 they whisked the band to Lagos to record The Apostles with the legendary Emmanual Odenusi at the controls. A heavy mix of wailing guitar, swirling organ and James Brown-style vocals, it became a fixture in every east Nigerian home. 'Never Too Late' sets the stage with a scorching lead break that most believe was played by guitar-slinger-for-hire, Felix 'Feladay' Odey. Drummer Joel Madubuike and bass player Henry Tandu lay down the rock solid groove for Benji Davidson's righteous organ lines in 'Inflation' and 'Highway to Success.' And each is invested with an urgency from battle-hardened vocals of Chyke Fussion, a veteran of the Biafra war. Don't be fooled by the angelic white outfits worn on the cover of The Apostles. "By the mid 1970's in Nigeria, the Biafran War was a distant memory and the music scene in the eastern city of Aba was booming again. Bands like The Funkees, The Wings and The Apostles grabbed the headlines, but the more interesting stuff was coming from smaller groups like The Friimen. The Friimen, or the Friimen Muzik Company to use their official name, were influenced as much by pre-Saturday Night Fever Bee Gees as Jimi Hendrix and James Brown. In Beni Tudumey they had the best keyboardist in the city, and in Dan Igbaji, Charlie Eze and Ken Okogbue its tightest rhythm section. Throw in Gbemi Saka Toju channeling his inner Barry Gibb and you had a band quite unlike any other in the country. The result is We Can Get It On, a hybrid of west coast ballads and dancefloor chuggers. One moment they are thanking God for making the mountains ('The Creator'), the next salaciously suggesting it's time to make the mountains move ('We Can Get It On'). Some of the songs simply state the obvious ('Music Makes You Move'.) However, it's the track 'Salt Sweet Style' that sums up the Friimen best: 'We have the salt. We have the sweet. Oh, and he was also a red-hot guitarist with The Hygrades, one of the heaviest bands to come out of the east. VISITORS, THE My Good Friends CD
PMG present a reissue of The Visitors's My Good Friends, originally released in 1977. "Set up by producer Ben Okonkwo in 1973, the BEN label, and its offshoot Clover Sounds, broke some of the biggest bands outside of Lagos. The Apostles, Akwassa, The Doves, Mary Afi Usuah and Aktion all got their start in the cramped studio in the commercial heart of Aba. The least known - and arguably one of the best bands on the label - was The Visitors. For a short, sweet time between 1975 and 1978, The Visitors were creating the most righteous sounds in the east. We're talking deep Afro-funk with generous dollops of rock, psych, fuzz, synth madness. My Good Friends, their second album, find them at the height of their powers. The musicianship throughout the album is extraordinary. Check out the synth and guitar wig out on 'Here We Come Brothers' and the searing guitar break that scorches the slinky groove of the title track. This album is impossibly hard to find and selling for high prices, one seller justified the high asking price by arguing that 'once you let this record in your bones, it's not coming back out.' VISITORS, THE My Good Friends LP
LP version. This album is impossibly hard to find and selling for high prices, one seller justified the high asking price by arguing that 'once you let this record in your bones, it's not coming back out.' Thanks to the good guys at PMG, your bones can now get the good stuff for considerably less." --Peter Moore.

EINSTURZENDE NEUBAUTEN Greatest Hits CD
Einstürzende Neubauten have discovered sounds beyond the pain barrier, the beauty of dissonance and the aesthetics of the scrapyard. They are regarded as the most important engines in the development of new musical strategies; Hardly another German band has characterized the music landscape as lastingly. Their influence on the music world was, and is, as great as their timeless character. Once fully set in motion - by West Berliners Blixa Bargeld, NU Unruh and Alexander Hacke in the early 1980s - Einstürzende Neubauten have pressed on regardless. Indeed since percussionist Rudolf Moser and former Die Haut guitarist Jochen Arbeit joined in 1997, the current Einstürzende Neubauten line-up has not only been their longest lasting; going on the evidence gathered here, it's arguably their broadest ranging and most fruitful partnership, with Rudi and Jochen always gamely responding to the musical challenges posed by NU Unruh's battery of invented instruments and devices. Along with multi-instrumentalist Alex Hacke, who took over bass after the departure of Mark Chung (after their 1992 album Tabula Rasa) and FM Einheit (during the recording of 1996's Ende Neu (POTOMAK 919821/919822)), they willingly switch between their chosen instruments and NU Unruh's inventions, sounding the depths, tapping, scratching and hammering out beats, or drawing haunting tones from the seemingly most unforgiving of source materials presented to them, invariably in the service of the song. The earliest track here is a newly mixed version of "Haus Der Lüge", the title track of their 1989 album Haus Der Lüge (POTOMAK 820001/820002); except it's now adorned with freshly recorded trombone and string parts, which the group wanted on the original but couldn't afford, so had to use synth simulations instead. Five tracks are taken from their 2000 album Silence Is Sexy (POTOMAK 957051/957052). During the 2000s, Einstürzende Neubauten's resourcefulness extended beyond the stage and the recording studio into the economics of alternative music practice. Two Greatest Hits tracks, "Dead Friends (Around The Corner)" and "Ein Leichtes Leises Säuseln", originated on their Supporters Album #1 (2003), which in publicly modified form became Perpetuum Mobile (Mute, 2004). Now as then as always, declares Greatest Hits's newest track "How Did I Die", "The difference makes the song".

BALDELLI & MARCO DIONIGI, DANIELE Adaptors: The Music Of Richard Bone CD
Listening, by chance, to the track "Alternate Music for the Hindenberg Lounge Pt.2," contained on the 1982 vinyl recording The American Music Compilation on the Eurock label, Daniele Baldelli discovered the music of Richard Bone for the first time. For regular clients of the Cosmic Club (in Lazise , Lake Garda, Verona), it soon became a very sought-after track, thanks to Baldelli's special mixing talents: he used to play this track at 45 instead of 33 rpm, overlaying it on Mike Oldfield's "Foreign Affair." Marco Dionigi must have liked it too when, at the age of 14, he heard the music of the Cosmic Club for the first time and immediately became a big Baldelli fan. Maybe thanks to this musical meeting, Dionigi began his career as a DJ, giving his best at Verona's Alter Ego Club. Perhaps through fate or a common feeling for certain sounds, Baldelli and Dionigi met by chance in 1992. This resulted in an alliance, a great friendship and a close collaboration that led to them experimenting with new sounds and comparing musical choices, working on several productions. In 2008, Baldelli & Dionigi released the album Cosmic Disco...Nah Cosmic Rock! on Eskimo Records, which included a re-edited Richard Bone track. At that point, thanks to the Web, they made direct contact with Richard Bone, which resulted in them producing this album. The album contains 13 tracks that have been completely re-edited, arranged, adapted and remixed by Daniele Baldelli & Marco Dionigi. It represents their tribute to musician Richard Bone, a way of thanking him for the musical influence and inspiration they have received.

An "Instrumental" mix of "Shattered" follows, shining light on the swinging breaks and emotive string melodies. "Elevate" sees Hoffstadt fuse weighty drums and ethereal pad swells with arpeggio synth leads and subtly unfolding intricacies.

SANO, KEITA Keita Sano CD
Keita Sano was born in 1989 in Okayama. He has released music on more labels than forests have trees (1080p, Rett I Fletta, Let's Play House, Mister Saturday Night, Crue-L etc.). He makes a technoid yet lo-fi version of music for discotheques that's uniquely his own. Rett I Fletta label head Prins Thomas on meeting Keita Sano: "A little over a year ago I spent a day off in the lovely seaside town Enoshima. There is a really nice club, cafe and concert venue there called Oppa-La which I had played the previous night. So my dear friend and Japanese promoter Hagi tells me we should go back there the following night as there will be local bands playing followed by a live-set from Keita Sano. I was only vaguely familiar with his music but had noticed his name crop up more and more frequently so off we went. A couple of beers later and around the third track in, he somehow manages to merge the playfulness of disco with the physical impact of techno, I'm sold there and then. Over a friendly chat and more beers, I clumsily present an offer to release his music and hopefully even all the things he played that night. A few days later the album as you hold in front of you and more or less a replica of that live-set arrives in my inbox."

P MONEY Live + Direct CD
After sending shock waves across the airwaves with "Panasonic", P Money presents his debut album Live + Direct on Rinse. As grime approaches its twentieth year, many MC's have come and gone, but P Money has staying power. His rise has been quiet but inexorable since releasing his first grime mixtape Coins 2 Notes in 2008. P's love for dubstep saw him become a household name in 2010 as tracks "Slang Like This" and "Anthemic" with Magnetic Man catapulted him into the mainstream. Along with numerous mixtapes, singles and EP's on Rinse, Butterz, RAM Records, Black Butter and more, he's toured extensively and not only hit UK festivals including Glastonbury, Bestival and Wireless but worldwide shows in New Zealand, Croatia and the US. His debut album Live + Direct taps into his entire musical history. Reaching from his roots in garage and grime into the dubstep that helped establish his name, it's set to draws together the disparate strands of his career so far, as well as reaching forward to suggest a wider future for his sound. A first class mic controller with clarity, witty lyrics, endless flow and punchlines, P has touched on everything from love to loss to police brutality, and while "Panasonic" is an eruptive and authoritative entry into album mode, it's not all the album has to offer. The substance and purpose in his music throughout his career is something he continues throughout the album. A few words from P Money: "Music has never been about money or charting for me. It was always about expression and being able to speak for my community. I've always imagined my debut album will sound garage, dubstep and grime, be released on Rinse and be a body of work that inspires young people, the first two are happening, I guess we'll have to wait till it's out to see if it really resonates... I think it will." Features: Solo 45, Stormzy, Blacks, Little Dee, Jendor, Ruger, Rubylee, Splurgeboys, JME, Wiley and NY.

OHRN + THE LIBERATION, JOSEFIN Mirage CD
Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation took little time to make their mark on the wider world, brandishing a radiant sound that stands effortlessly apart from the increasingly staid and often paradoxically predictable world of modern psychedelia. Having already been nominated for a Swedish Grammy with their debut EP, Diamond Waves, their full-length 2015 debut on Rocket Recordings, Horse Dance (LAUNCH 086CD/LP), marked out a territory in which beguiling repetition could sashay with sweet pop suss, melodic flourishes with experimental intensity. Yet clearly this was only the beginning of a journey of discovery, and few would have guessed how the band's sound would quickly evolve into still more enchanting and enlightening strains. Their second effort Mirage, sees the band sculpting sprawling, hypnotic jams into elegant nocturnal serenades with such serendipity that their actual creation remains a little hazy even to themselves. "We agree on not remembering very much about how these tracks came about, that all of them were written on the road and that most of them came fully formed" note the band. "Most were really long to begin with, but we found it relieving to break away a bit from the mandatory psych jams a little bit. We also just realized that none of them were written in daylight, which might be why memory is so elusive." Indeed, this hypnagogic approach seems to fit well with the primary inspiration for the five-piece, which centered on "the state where dreams, visions and the present are entwined" - the domain of surrealists and mystics. True to form, Mirage sees the band taking a chic tradition of avant-pop that extends all the way from Serge Gainsbourg and Françoise Hardy to Broadcast and Saint Etienne, and warping it mercilessly to their own darker ends. Whilst the brooding yet sultry "Sister Green Eyes" is no less than a sharp slice of velveteen motorik-pop and "Looking For You" reinvents three-chord garage-rock attack with mighty finesse, The Liberation are just as comfortable dealing out the heavy-lidded and electronically-driven "In Madrid" or the dive in the hallucinatory deep end of "Circular Motion", on which they're aided and abetted by Lay Llamas's Nicola Guinta. "Horse Dance was very much about conjuring the strength needed to cut ties" the band elucidates. "Mirage may be about having left but having no clue what's next - the power in being completely lost and thriving on it." Comes in holographic mirror-board sleeves.

DaRand Land spreads out and shows off his unique brand of euphoric and uplifting deep house on his debut EP for Scissor & Thread, Discover You. JANSEN, STEVE Tender Extinction 2LP
Double LP version. In 1978, Japan released their debut album Adolescent Sex and kick started a career that would span decades. With Steve Jansen on drums, the band enjoyed huge success whilst simultaneously creating a back catalogue of music that still inspires today. Fast forward to 2007 and after many years working and collaborating with artists such as Richard Barbieri, Yukihiro Takahashi, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Bernd Friedmann, Steve released his debut, solo album Slope. Steve Jansen's second solo album Tender Extinction is an evocative blend of songs and instrumentals enlisting some of the singer/songwriters that appeared on Jansen's previous solo work Slope, namely Tim Elsenburg (Sweet Billy Pilgrim) and Thomas Feiner (Anywhen), as well as featuring new collaborations with Perry Blake (Ireland), Melentini (Greece), Nicola Hitchcock (UK) and including some vocal performances by Jansen himself. Atmospheric sound design creates a bed of complex, often atonal qualities, with delicate synth and orchestral arrangements drifting throughout to produce a multi-layered, emotive and hauntingly intimate album. Some titles are punctuated with Jansen's characteristically minimal drum patterns and off-kilter time signatures while others are structured with more classical elements such as piano, cello and orchestral string arrangements. All music and arrangements are by Jansen with guests vocalists providing their own lyrics and vocal melodies on five of the tracks. Steve on the album: "I spent a long time with the material, honing it down to those elements that blend together well in an attempt to allow the dissonance that weaves throughout much of the music to settle into its own space and not overly distract from the more harmonious content. The album is somewhat reflective and subtly addresses aspects of transience and transformation and a romance in holding onto those things we think of as precious and that will inevitably cease to exist."

BERTOIA, HARRY Clear Sounds/Perfetta CD
After nearly 40 years of silence, Harry Bertoia's Sonambient label has been resurrected in order to release the best of Bertoia's unheard recordings from his recently preserved archive of 1/4" tapes. "Clear Sounds" b/w "Perfetta" was cut straight from the original reels and is a true analog pressing. These two pieces were selected for their minimal, meditative and lush harmonic qualities; lacking in the abundance of dynamics and contrasts found on the original Sonambient records, these pieces show another approach to performance. Slow washes of shimmering metallic sculpture rustle thickly like the leaves of a white birch or tall grass in the summer sun. Gorgeous harmonics hover overhead, making audible measurements of the length and purity of Bertoia's metal rod sculptures. Both Harry Bertoia and his brother Oreste composed extensively in the Sonambient barn deep in the woods of rural Pennsylvania where Harry kept over 100 Sonambient sculptures and gongs. The first Sonambient LP Bellissima Bellissima Bellissima / Nova, released in 1970, contains a Harry Bertoia composition on side A and an Oreste Bertoia composition on side B. As an homage to the original Sonambient LP, "Clear Sounds" is a Harry Bertoia piece from June 30, 1973 and "Perfetta" is an Oreste Bertoia piece from June 28, 1971. Harry Bertoia first came into artistic prominence in the late 1930s and his sculptural, ergomonic chairs were soon modernist furniture classics. Inspired by the resonant sounds emanating from metals as he worked them and encouraged by his brother Oreste, whose passion was music, Harry restored a fieldstone "Pennsylvania Dutch" barn as the home for this experiment in sounding sculptures which he had begun in the 1950s. Bertoia was an obsessive composer and relentless experimenter, often working late into the night and accumulating hundreds of tapes of his best performances; Oreste, too, would explore and record the sculptures's sounds during his annual visits to his brother's home in rural Pennsylvania. Over nearly twenty years, adding, culling and rearranging, Bertoia carefully selected nearly 100 harmonious pieces ranging in height from under a foot to more than fifteen feet. Learning by experimentation was common for Bertoia and he mastered the art of tape recording, turning the Sonambient barn into a sound studio with four overhead microphones hanging from the rafters in a square formation. He would experiment with overdubbing by performing along to previous recordings, constantly improving his methods while also honing his performance skills.

Spin On Black present a vinyl release of Triosophy, the debut album from Red Sun, originally released on CD in 2015. Red Sun formed in March 2014 after a few late night jams under the starry sky of Albone, a tiny village in Piacenza, Italy. The group opened the first Desert Fox Fest the following May. The trio, comprised of Stefano "Eno" on guitar, Mirco on bass (both formerly of Silent River and The Big Red Sun) and Federico "Fredo" (of the band El Infernal Quinlan, now called Cubedivision) on drums and synth, serve up a mix of psychedelia, space-rock and heavy stoner instrumental rock. Over the top of the plots, woven by bass and drums, and guitar, punctuated by powerful riffs and dilated solos, wrapping everything up with dream-like architectures. The sound trips of the Red Sun are present on the disc Triosophy. The musical concept pursued by the band is the search for a unique sound, clear and powerful to hear and internalize, a sound that brings to life the vision behind each song. VA Jukebox Fever Vol. 2 (1957) 10"/CD
Stag-O-Lee presents the second volume in their Jukebox Fever series - ten-inch records done chronologically by year - focusing on 1957. The series features rare and cool 45s that might have made their way onto a dusty jukebox in the middle of nowhere - primal rock 'n' roll, super rare rockabilly and rambunctious R&B. The United States was in crisis. Elvis Presley could only be filmed from the waste up on TV. Girls were in a state of constant perspiration and the guys were digging James Dean. On Ed Sullivan's show, "The King" gave the Bible Belt "Peace In The Valley". People were confused but hoped that, in 1957, teenage music and rock 'n' roll was a fad that might just pass. In Liverpool, no-one had caught onto that and the Cavern Club opened. And, in the mysteriously super cold and suitably austere Russian empire, Sputnik 1 and 2 were launched. The cold war was gearing up and notable births in that year included Sid Vicious, The B52s's Cindy Wilson and Siouxsie Sioux. Monkeys would soon go into space - nothing would ever be the same again. Down on the corner in anywhere USA, the jukebox was getting stacked with vinyl that asked plenty of questions. These records threw together sounds that didn't belong and storylines and one-liners that sparked the imagination. The established acts were crossing musical barriers to get into the spotlight jukeboxes all over the globe were being bent out of shape. Three songs could change everything - forever. On 1957, we are featuring rare and cool 45s that might have made their way onto a dusty jukebox in the middle of nowhere. Includes a CD features five bonus cuts. Features: Teddy (Mr. Bear) McRae With Teddy McRae & His Orchestra, Junior Wells, Jesse Lee Denson, Vincent Maloy, Danny Andrew, Al Casey, Skeeter Bonn, Ray Anderson, Haskell May & The Sundowners, Roy James, Wesley Hardin With The Roxters. As distinct in their fashion as they are their music, each band member's individual personality and style can be heard in their music. In 2013, they released their first single "Red Light". It was a viral hit, and soon won the attention of BBC Radio 1, who made them "Artist of the Week", with repeated plays across the station from the likes of Fern Cotton and Greg James. They've also had support from the likes of Huw Stephens, DJ Target, DJ Semtex and Mista Jam. They've also had continuous support from BBC Wales, where they've been "Artist of the Week", three times. Since "Red Light", the girls have been releasing tracks, readying their debut album and cutting their teeth on the live circuit. They've played festivals like The Great Escape, Boomtown, T in the Park, X Fest, and Swn festival and toured with Welsh super band The Earth. And now the album is finally ready to be heard. Produced by Super Furry Animal's Cian Ciaran, the self-titled album crisscrosses the narrow divide between rock, hip hop, soul and reggae - it's a blissed out, musical odyssey written by all five members of the band. The sickly sweet overtures one might expect from an all-girl band are ditched in favor of beats that force the melodic content to the fore, with the principles of classic soul and R'n'B song-writing, catching up with the present day sounds of British street genres. Lavishly layered vocals are wrapped up in slick production that marks out Baby Queens's intentions to push boundaries and reintroduce to the masses what a vocal group with melody and beats in their hearts is all about. "Our love of street poetry, spoken word and rap has influenced many of the songs, but also rock n roll bands, soul/Motown, trippy '60s and '70s bands, the roots reggae and roots hip hop artists, basically anything that is heartfelt and soulful and stands for something positive," says Cara.

BLESSED INITIATIVE Blessed Initiative CD
Blessed Initiative is a project by Yair Elazar Glotman which suggests a dissonant, coexistent state of extreme highs and lows. This self-titled album attempts to articulate a mental state of simultaneity, in which equilibrium is fleeting, fragile, and its scarcity is embraced. Opposite states coincide, contrast, and reflect, creating moments of uncertainty and insecurity. Absurdity, and at times even bliss, are possible results in the attempt to channel anxiety into creative forces rather than debilitating ones. In an environment where personas are the sums of the images they project, sounds are also no longer evidence of invention but of ever-changing combination, curation, and editing. The final persona is a sum of the chosen and the deleted, as well as what may be projected from outside, creating a confusing and conflicted self. The sounds collected here are attempts to compose on these uncertain grounds, and to reflect the anxiety released in all these sources meeting and interaction. As a singular project, Blessed Initiative stops to comment on the conditions that inform Glotman's composition before and after it, and to acknowledge it as a non-linear, ongoing process. The focus on process and uncertainty is apparent in the album's phrasing, re-articulation and cycles of repetition and deviation. The pieces were composed from sounds generated on the KYMA system, personal foley recordings, as well as tape manipulations techniques. Minor sounds on major scales and micro-tonal tuning suggest an ambiguous harmonic sphere. These were then integrated within idiosyncratic rhythmic structures, at times integrating real spaces and resonating bodies, as reverb and augmented echo chambers. Concrete, almost-recognizable organic sounds contrast with these abstract spaces and connect them to tactile experiences. These textures and structures are a palette that reforms and deforms as it cycles throughout the album. The photographic series "Relax (blue)", 2004, by the artist Josephine Pryde was chosen for the album's cover. The two images represent a closed cycle of energy and unfulfilled release. Yair Elazar Glotman is a classically trained musician and sound artist based in Berlin whose previous works on Subtext include the LP Études (SUB 013LP, 2015) and a collaboration with James Ginzburg titled Nimbes (SUB 012EP, 2014).

COULTON, ALEX Gamma Ray Burst 2x12"
Manchester native Alex Coulton has nurtured a reputation for creating sub-heavy rollers thanks to 12"s for the likes of Black Acre, Livity Sound and Bloc. With Gamma Ray Burst, the next in his series of releases on London low-end specialists Tempa, Coulton consolidates his sound to deliver some of the most sparse, rhythmic work of his career. With the record's title track, Coulton weaves from hard-hitting kicks, through to dizzying tribal polyrhythms, the whole time maintaining a minimal, space driven atmosphere that remains omnipresent throughout the track's most intense moments. "Ground Zero" revels in its spaciousness, allowing reverb to flood into the negative space between flashes of heavyweight techno percussion and saturated ripples of synth while the pulsating kicks that underpin "Alpha Decay" are punctuated with bleak, discordant bells, rhythmic bass hits and hypnotic filtered percussion. Showing his diverse abilities, "Phase Two" is an exercise in measured restraint, as a cacophony of clicks and hisses come together to disorientate before forming a driving rhythm section leading into the fog-tinged "Ascent" where Coulton maximizes his expansive elements. Coulton closes with the steady flowing, brighter-hued melodic work of "Distant Resonance". Alex Coulton has created a masterful collection of experimental tech-focused electronica that bewilders, intrigues and will draw the listener in with each play.

TRISTANO, FRANCESCO Surface Tension CD
Pianist and composer, Francesco Tristano, joins forces with one of the godfathers of Detroit techno Derrick May on Surface Tension. Described by the man himself as his "most techno and synth-based project yet," the eight-track effort is both a celebration of electronic instrumentation and the first record Derrick May has worked extensively on for the better part of two decades. "I had to lure him into my studio," Tristano says of May with a smile, "he was like Alice in Wonderland when he saw the synthesizers." Originally developed as a way create new material for Tristano's p:anorig project - a unique live set-up debuted at Barcelona's Sónar festival - Surface Tension grew into a project in its own right. With an instrumentation of analog, digital, classic and modern gear - ranging from Prophets to Moogs, to Rolands and Yamahas - at his and May's disposal, Tristano has aimed to keep processing to a minimum. The pair are not just using these synths, they're paying tribute to them, honoring their rich, recognizable sound palettes. The result is an album that feels, at once, nostalgic and fresh; that feels like an old friend, but one who never ceases to surprise. From the ambient vision of "Esoteric Thing", drifting along to the sound of birdsong, to more beat-centric pieces such as "The Mentor" and the quirky "Xokolade", the equipment, and the love it's been treated with, shines through. Both Tristano and May's individual presences are obvious too, yet work in a way so complimentary to each other as to blur the lines at which they cross. "Pacific FM" is a lesson in uplifting techno, keys fluttering over pad-foot bass; the futuristic Detroit dance of "In Da Minor" is undercut by eerie, unpredictable glass synth-work; "Rocco's Bounce" is free-form jazz tugged into line by structured four-to-the-floor; there's even an itchy, jittering, Decca Records-sanctioned remix of Japanese pianist and general Renaissance man, Ryuichi Sakamoto's classic "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence". Those hoping for a Francesco Tristano piano album: be duly warned. "The piano is there, but it's more like the shadow of the piano. We don't have the mass of that sound, it's more like the reminiscence of that sound," says Tristano. It gives Surface Tension the aforementioned significance. Tristano hasn't abandoned his roots, yet has simultaneously transcended what it means to be a pianist in the 21st century.

Following a seventeen year hiatus since the release of Symbiotics (1999), Porter Ricks, the duo of sound artist Thomas Köner and music producer Andy Mellwig, return with Shadow Boat EP. Shadow Boat EP is deeply nuanced in its perception of space, using complex layers to add depth, detail, and density to non-formulaic techno compositions - buoyant dub, hazy ambience, and colorful sound design.

VA Soul Safari Presents Township Jive & Kwela Jazz Volume 4 LP
The fourth issue in the Township Jive & Kwela Jazz series features 16 early vocal and jazzy tunes from the "Golden Age" of jive and kwela in South Africa. These pearls of musical genius were recorded in the glory years of jive and kwela, 1940 to 1965. On side A, it is not difficult to recognize the similarities to American popular music like R&B and small-combo close-harmony singing. In contrast, that typical South African swing, jive and incredibly smooth form of African jazz is on side B. The rarest and most treasured finds are collected here, some with the original spoken introductions, "sketches" as these were called and characteristic conversations between the musicians - often in a humoristic slang and always extremely funny. Originally released on fragile shellac discs only. Shellac is a very delicate material but the music survived thanks to the archives of ILAM (the International Library of African Music), in Grahamstown, South Africa. A truly great source of South African music is being preserved here for new generations, to inspire young and hopeful musicians and singers from all over the world. Pressed on 180 gram vinyl. Features: Izintombi Zesi Manje Manje, Maphela, Mississippi Brothers, Beauty Diloane, Susan Gabashane & Her Honeybees, Alabhama Kids, Black Duke, Peter Makana and Alfred Dlezi & Dlamini.

ZAIMPH Between The Infinite And The Finite LP
Between The Infinite And The Finite is Zaimph's first solo studio recording. Three new improvisations capture field recordings of stolen conversations, live radio and echoes that shimmer in a reverberant magnetic darkness of empty corridors. Spectral spaces entwine with the corporeal, amplified strings blossom in explosions, repetition and ominous tones of destruction and decline, slowly sequenced into a fragile space of beauty. The instinctive activity seeps into our deepest subconscious. Zaimph is the solo project of Marcia Bassett (Double Leopards, Hototogisu, GHQ). Since the mid-90s, Bassett has been exploring free-form improvisational music and spontaneous sound in her collaborations and solo work. Between The Infinite And The Finite is comprised of three new works using analog and digital synthesizers, processed voice, field recordings, piano and amplified strings. Recorded in the intimacy of Brooklyn's Bunker Studios by Stephen Conover. A horror takes form in the living contradiction which exists in the clash between the infinite and the finite. Everything that's here exists. Artwork by Marcia Bassett. Edition of 300.
