FUNKADELIC Maggot Brain (Clear & Blue Vinyl) LP
"1971's Maggot Brain is the all-out Funkadelic masterpiece. Absolutely no one working in soul and funk at the time had the scope, or vision, to pull off the kind of record that George Clinton and his collaborators have made here. Eccentric funk jams are book ended by two of the heaviest tracks ('Maggot Brain' and 'Wars of Armageddon') ever committed to tape. The title track, and album opener, is nothing short of mind-blowing, Eddie Hazel's guitar is a revolution brought on by Clinton asking him to play 'as if your mother just died.' Maggot Brain is an essential classic and the deepest album to come out of the Parliament-Funkadelic camp. Clear & blue vinyl in a deluxe classic style gatefold sleeve. Limited edition of 1,000."

VA The Gamelan Of The Walking Warriors: Gamelan Beleganjur And The Music Of The Ngaben Funerary Ritual In Bali LP
LP version. Includes printed inner sleeve; Includes download card with complete ceremony, extra photographs, and liner note translations (French, Italian, Japanese). A fascinating immersion in the heart of a funeral ceremony live recorded in Bali, where gongs, cymbals, and drums give rhythm to the bewitching atmosphere of this mortuary procession. The international audience's interest into Balinese music and its gamelan orchestras dates back to the edition of large ethnographic series in the 1950s, '60s, and '70s which largely encouraged the discovery of this music beyond Indonesia's borders. Taking advantage of a more advanced technology, compared to the vinyl golden era, the present field recordings produced in 2011 render, at the closest, the power of gamelans. Gamelan is presented here in two forms. The first one (tracks 1 to 4) offers a display of Beleganjur music out of the ritual context, which can be differentiated by a more melodic form and a more dramatic and hypnotic aspect in the compositions. The second one (tracks 5 to 9) presents the Beleganjur style in the ceremonial context of the Ngaben funerary rite in the village of Peliatan. The utmost vitality of these orchestras springs out throughout the different stages of these funerals, and the sound environment surrounding the musicians immerse the listener in the very heart of the procession following the corpse. With The Gamelan Of The Walking Warriors, Akuphone carries on its exploration of ritual and ceremonial music with those materials of rare intensity. These recordings were collected by Vincenzo Della Ratta, PhD in Ethnomusicology from the Sapienza University (Rome). As a specialist of the gongs music from the Austronesian cultures of Southeast Asia, Della Ratta is the author of numerous articles on the subject. His field researches have already been edited as a vinyl entitled Kwangkay: Funerary Music Of The Dayak Benuaq Of Borneo (SF 106LP, 2016). Tracks 1 to 4 were recorded in the village of Wanagiri, in the district ("kecamatan") of Sukasada, of the regency of Buleleng. Tracks 5 to 9 were recorded in the village of Peliang, in the district of Ubud, of the regency of Gianyar.

BRADOCK, PEPE #12"@Last 12"
The new ornamental Atavisme explores the rebirth of Pepe Bradock. After the dirty baby incident (ATA 003EP, 2016) and numerous and consuming time-traveling trips; deciphering the precious lines of medieval sequencing -- they can't be read with numbers; "Trsors" and "Tsundoku" are a sudden return to approximate and abstract dancing containers, with or without filters, but often on the edge of the nerve-wracking Pepe-exit for obvious reasons. It is an evocation of a spiritual ballroom haunted with unmatched awkwardness and a healthy dose of invisible whirling mascarons. Would you kiss an ox for the sake of peace of mind?

SLEDGE, PERCY The Percy Sledge Way LP
"11 classic soul and R&B numbers including 'The Dark End of the Street', 'You Send Me', 'Drown In My Own Tears', 'I've Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now)', and 'Just Out of Reach (Of My Two Empty Arms)', a country song already a hit for Faron Young, Patsy Cline and Solomon Burke. Reissue with the original artwork, carefully re-mastered for Bear Family's exquisite 180 gram vinyl release. The American soul, R&B, and gospel singer Percy 'Tyrone' Sledge (1940-2015) will always be remembered for recording 'When A Man Loves A Woman', an epochal Southern soul hymn. The million-selling tune was released on Atlantic Records in March 1966 and went to the top of the US R&B and pop charts. It was Atlantic's first gold record! Although he recorded up-tempo tunes as well, Sledge achieved his strongest success when devoting himself largely to mid-tempo tunes and soul ballads and lyrics dealing with the emotions of loss and desire. The Percy Sledge Way was originally released on Atlantic in 1967 and finds Sledge at the top of his game. The album, here reissued in its original form, contains eleven classic soul and R&B numbers including 'The Dark End of the Street', 'You Send Me', 'Drown In My Own Tears', 'I've Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now)', and 'Just Out of Reach (Of My Two Empty Arms)', a country song already a hit for Faron Young, Patsy Cline and Solomon Burke. Spooner Oldham and Jerry Weaver are featured on piano and organ, Eddie Hinton, Jimmy Johnson and Marlin Green are the guitar players, it's David Hood on bass and Roger Hawkins on drums -- some of the finest Southern soul studio musicians."

ARKANA, KENY L'Esquisse 3 2LP+CD
Rap was something that just happened to her. Keny Arkana was only twelve when she started writing her first lyrics. Her first contacts with the record business came in 2005. But even before she infiltrated the matrix, Keny released her first opus, L'Esquisse (2005), a fast and furious street album containing the hit "Le Missile Est Lancé" produced by Tefa & Masta, as well as "De l'Opéra À La Plaine", a gargantuan freestyle track by twenty writers, born and bred on the streets of Marseilles. 12 years after L'Esquisse and six years after L'Esquisse 2 (2011), Keny presents L'Esquisse 3. A spontaneous, creative, sincere, energetic, and meaningful record, with powerful rhythmic and precise arrangements. Even though the record has a mixtape appearance, it hasn't been a botched job, as evidenced by its complex structure and harmony: musical interludes around the four elements, true rap anthems like "Couleur Molotov" or "Lejos", and contemporary hits like "Abracadabra" or "Freestyle Beatbox" with beatboxer Tressym for an instrumental. Both dark in its lyrics and lively in its energy, Keny's mixtape L'Esquisse 3 reveals again an artist just as we could dream in 2017: clear-sighted, offensive, touching, and inspired. Double LP comes in a gatefold sleeve with a printed inner sleeve; Includes CD.

PETIT FANTOME Un Mouvement Pour Le Vent 2LP+CD
Double LP version. Translucent vinyl; Three-sided; Etched design on the D side; Includes CD. Petit Fantôme ("Small Ghost") is the evasive and mysterious pseudonym of Pierre Loustaunau, an adventurous multi-instrumentalist with quite the collective experience (Frànçois & The Atlas Mountains, Crane Angels, Le Pingouin, Iceberg). He started his solo adventure in 2006 and after a few moving years, he settled in southern France city Bayonne to write the maxi Yallah (2011) and the mixtape Stave (2013), two highly-praised records. Three years after Torse Bombé (2014), a "melodic-grindcore-punk-rock-pop" project broadcast as a free download on his birthday, Petit Fantôme is back with Un Mouvement Pour Le Vent ("A Movement For Wind"), a natural title for this ingrained skateboarder and casual hiker. Pierre himself willingly sees it as his first album. The perpetually dissatisfied but prolific composer delivers 11 smart, inspired, and emancipated tracks. Right from the start, there's a clear taste for the '90s with "Quelque Chose A Eu Lieu". With this way, always so peculiar and moving, to crack the armor: voluntarily short texts, like "haïkus that can mean a lot", according to Pierre. The immediate hit "Easy Come Easy Go" with a chorus inspired by "Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder)" by The Beach Boys and the immediate charisma of "Libérations Terribles", are undoubtedly rhythmic. Produced by Edge Of Town and licensed to Because Music, Un Mouvement Pour Le Vent weaves between romantic and cloudy noisy pop music, going from one to the other with a disconcerting agility.

AMADOU & MARIAM La Confusion LP+CD
LP version. Includes printed inner-sleeve; Includes CD. La Confusion is the eighth full-length album from Malian musical duo and Grammy-award nominees Amadou & Mariam. The album includes the hit single "Bofou Safou", which Stereogum calls "the funk, the whole funk, and nothing but the funk." The term "bofou safou" is a Bambara (Malian national language) nickname given to nonchalant young men who would rather dance than work. Over the span of three decades, Amadou (guitar and vocals) and Mariam (vocals) have developed an international following, recorded eight full-length albums, and toured around the world. Their album Welcome to Mali (BEC 5156468, 2008) was nominated for "Best Contemporary World Music Album" at the 52nd Grammy Awards. On the ensuing tour they supported U2 on their U2 360 Tour, performed at the 2010 World Cup for FIFA's Kick-Off Celebration, and performed alongside a host of major acts. Don't expect a still frame of African music; Stillness has never been part of their repertoire. The road stretches far behind them as Amadou & Mariam march on, bound by an unbreakable chain in their tireless search for new horizons. Creativity and generosity have never ceased to shine through their eight full-length albums. At their core lies a skillful fusion of heritage and cutting-edge music.

MOLE, THE Little Sunshine EP 12"
Colin de la Plante aka The Mole follows releases on Wagon Repair, Philpot, Perlon, and more with this work of stripped-back, understated disco grooves and infectious, cyclical melodic patterns. The title-track brings a mellow introspection to the track as a neat counterpoint to the energy of the drums and arpeggios. "Discotheque Airplane" features dusty samples and truly mesmerizing bass that swells in and out. The B-side features a collaboration with Tom Trago that finds the pair exploring lean, focused techno, plus a remix of their track by Aardvarck, who takes the subtle foundations of the original and builds delicate, lilting melodies on top.

SUN RA & HIS SOLAR ARKESTRA The Magic City CD
"This landmark album, now being reissued in a definitive stereo edition, marks the debut of the new Cosmic Myth Records label. Cosmic Myth plans to reissue Sun Ra's Saturn Records catalog titles under official license from Sun Ra LLC, comprised of the heirs of Sun Ra. Sun Ra albums like The Magic City prove the categorical futility of 'File Under: Jazz.' When assessing the post-Chicago (1960-on) work of Ra, 'jazz' turns out to be less a genre than a journalistic and marketing convenience. Jazz has a glorious tradition. Sun Ra was schooled in it, emerged from it, and grew to transcend it (though he never abandoned it). Even the cheeky term 'Space Jazz' cannot frame the extremes to which Ra pushed his art in the mid-1960s. In this regard, The Magic City was a pinnacle. 1965 was a turbulent year for the Arkestra and its leader, and many consider The Magic City a flashpoint for that upheaval. Arkestra drummer Tommy Hunter, quoted in John Szwed's 1997 Ra bio Space is the Place, describes a typical performance of the period: 'It was like a fire storm coming off the bandstand.' On the original 1965 The Magic City LP, issued on Saturn, the monster 27-1/2 minute title track sprawled across side A. The 'Magic City' to which Ra refers was his birthplace -- Birmingham, Alabama. The term was the town's motto, emblazoned on a billboard by the train station near Sunny's childhood home, intended to reflect the city's explosive growth as a Southern industrial epicenter after the discovery of iron ore, coal, and limestone deposits. Birmingham was a place about which Sun Ra felt and expressed ambivalence: an outpost of racial segregation and grim smokestack-pocked landscapes, yet a city for which he felt twinges of nostalgia and affection. (His heirs still live in the area.) Ra customarily supervised the Arkestra's improvisational process via keyboard cues or hand signals. He was always in charge -- hence critic Simon Adams describing the title track as '27 minutes of controlled freedom.' 'The Magic City' was never performed in concert; saxophonist John Gilmore said it was 'unreproducible, a tapestry of sound.' Although shorter in scope than side A's magnum opus, the four works on The Magic City's flip side reflect the same improvisational approach, spatiality, and lack of structure. One session outtake, 'Other Worlds,' an alternate version of 'Shadow World,' is included as a bonus track on side B. For this definitive edition, historical and technical liner notes are provided by noted jazz historian Ben Young, who restored and remastered the album with his Triple Point Records partner Joe Lizzi. Both men have been recognized for their extensive work on the Grammy Nominated Albert Ayler boxset, released on John Fahey's Revenant records in 2005."

A really great western soundtrack from the giant Riz Ortolani for the 1967 cult movie Day Of Anger starring the mighty Lee Van Cleef and Giuliano Gemma. Mixing the usual western elements, Morricone style, with some incredible groovy touches with jazzy horns and loud electric guitars, Ortolani brings a new jazz verve into the "spaghetti" western sound. The electrifying main theme was used by Quentin Tarantino for his Kill Bill (2003) and Django Unchained (2012) movies. Dagored present a reissue of Piero Piccioni's soundtrack for Cadaveri Eccellenti, originally released in 1976. A superb soundtrack composed for Francesco Rosi's film Cadaveri Eccellenti, based on the novel Il Trattato by Leonardo Sciascia. A portrait of Italy during the infamous Years of Lead ("Anni di Piombo"), Cadaveri Eccellenti, presented in 1976 at the Cannes Film Festival, caused an outcry for the inconvenient issues addressed. Jazz and funky tunes are mixed here with a big orchestra-style peculiar of the best compositions by the maestro Piero Piccioni. This album is an enjoyable journey into dark and light atmospheres. HALA STRANA Hala Strana LP
Desastre present the first vinyl issue of Hala Strana's debut self-titled album, originally released in 2003. Hala Strana is a summation of Steven R. Smith's interest in the traditional folk musics of central and eastern Europe. By incorporating the melodies, scales, and instrumentation of the village music from areas such as Croatia, Hungary, Romania, the Czech Republic, and Poland, Steven has pushed his music into yet another new territory. This is not ethnological preservation, but a starting point. In the same manner from which the band transformed the sounds of early Americana into their own brand of timeless music, Hala Strana has abstracted these melodies and turned them into something uniquely their own. Like his previous solo work, Hala Strana's richly layered sounds are carefully placed but have a spontaneous feel. Instruments like gourd guitar, clay flowerpots, harmonium, accordion, glockenspiel, violin, and even bottles find their way into the mix. Performed on an array of atypical instruments, the songs, all instrumentals, have a magnificent sweep and grandeur but also a Baroque sense of storytelling and commanding, sometimes mournful, introspection, a tension that persistently creates a mood of captivating dislocation. Hala Strana consistently locates the source of their esoteric power, the part that suggests specific cultural heritages. The brilliance of the album lies in where those evocations lead, to what ends they are taken -- luxurious, complicated cities of the imagination, landscapes at once tangible and unknowable. This marks the first vinyl reissue of Hala Strana. All elements from the original CD artwork have been used for the vinyl edition. The cover art is a detail from the Nuremberg Chronicle (1493) but the Hala Strana writing have been hand-made by Mathieu Tilly (Druidhigh Visuals), who is also France's drummer and the co-owner of the Standard In-Fi label. Tilly provided the new LP layout and insert (and the logo of Desastre label).

O MORTO The Forest, The People And The Spirits LP
Originally released as a limited tape in 2015. This vinyl reissue of O Morto's (aka Mestre Andre?) immersive electronic tryptic piece dedicated to the Ba'Aka people and its spirits is remastered here on green vinyl . Albeit, his music is now closer to a soundscape composition approach, O Morto actually started as a free improv/noise project in 2012. However, after releasing his debut Memento Mori (2012), O Morto slowly began to drift away from the harshest soundscapes to seek a new direction. He found it under the form of the polyphonic music played by Ba'Aka (a pygmy tribe that still lives in the Republic of Congo), and in a conceptualized image of Jengi, a forest spirit that feeds from the flesh of a sacrifice. Having this exotic array of influences in mind, O Morto collected samples, field recordings, and electronic sounds that would eventually appear in this triptych piece. The record explores the possibilities of sound manipulation as a way to create vivid and cinematic soundscapes. A noise maker by nature, Andre? also plays in the excellent A?lforjs and produces some of the most addictive beats as Notwan.

ARIHA BRASS QUARTET Ariha Brass Quartet LP
Originally released on CD by Beirut based Al Maslakh Recordings in 2015. Mark Corroto about Ariha Brass Quartet in All About Jazz upon its initial release: "The practitioners here, three trumpeters Axel Dörner, Franz Hautzinger, Mazen Kerbaj, and Carl Ludwig Hu?bsch on tuba, practice a unique approach to their instruments. All four musicians set aside a traditional approach to playing, substituting breath for notes, abandoning a mouthpiece, and applying amplification to microscopic sounds. The quartet recorded this session in Beirut 2013. The set opens with 'Mar Mikhael In The Afternoon' , the longest improvisation at 16-plus minutes. The fluttering of notes is accompanied by the snorting of unseen wild beasts and the coyote howls of brass. Their language, developed in the past 20 years or so, is a direct descendant from the European systems and improvisers such as Derek Bailey, Eddie Prevost's AMM, and Paul Rutherford. Stripped of the conventions of noted music, the growls and micro-notes would not be out of place in sci-fi cinema as the backdrop to the silence of an orbiting space station. The squiggles and on/off switches of sounds inhabit the ghosts in the machines of the imagination, but also the rumble and hum of the earth's inner core. 'Hamra Drinks' buzzes with the low bass reverberation and the looping notes of trumpet take on an organic biologic shape. Each piece conjures a response be it a visual, an emotional, a fragrance, a flavor, or something tactile. Ahira Brass Quartet opens the listening experience to all five senses."

PERRY & SUBATOMIC SOUND SYSTEM, LEE "SCRATCH" Super Ape Returns To Conquer LP+CD
41 years later, Lee "Scratch" Perry uses today's sound system to revisit his classic Black Ark album that defined Jamaican dub music, reincarnating the magic for the sound system generation. Big question about it: "How do you improve on a masterpiece?" Lee "Scratch" Perry defined dub music with his seminal 1976 Super Ape album, and he returns with New York City's Subatomic Sound System to conquer again, definitively reincarnating the magic of his Black Ark studio in Jamaica, heavy on Ethiopian horns and percussion, while reinvigorating it with the 21st century booming bass and beats that capture the energy of their innovative live electronic show. Largely known as the mentor to Bob Marley, Perry's influence has transcended reggae. Since 2010, he has toured with NYC's Subatomic Sound System, his go-to band for recreating his Black Ark studio sound live on stage, in new exciting ways as a one-of-a-kind hybrid of beat heavy electronics and live musicians, including original Black Ark studio percussionist Larry McDonald. Subatomic Sound System has been pushing the envelope of electronic music in combination with reggae since their inception in 1999. In dub, Lee "Scratch" Perry is a star at organizing and remixing the music with drum and bass in the forefront and tweaking knobs and faders, adding effects like a jazz improvisation. In the 1970s, the idea of a producer as a star, rather than a singer or musician, seemed crazy, but looking across the world of star DJ producers, he is rightly acknowledged as a visionary as well. There are many stories to be told, but this album follows on the mission of the tour which has the goal of reaching out to old fans and new fans. As sound system culture continues to expand globally with reggae and beyond, these are DJ-friendly heavyweight versions of Scratch material that makes sense in the 21st century. "Scratch" started his music career as a dancer so he loves to get a party started even at 81. The album shows that Scratch was 40 years ahead of his time with Super Ape, and that at 81, he's more relevant to youth culture than ever. The original "Burning Man", "Scratch" was called "the Salvador Dali of music" by Keith Richards and Bounty Killer hailed him as "the greatest Jamaican artist of all time". Features: Jahdan Blakkamoore, Screechy Dan, and Ari Up of The Slits. Includes CD; Edition of 999.

SANDERS, PHAROAH Pharaoh Sanders Quintet LP
ESP-Disk present a reissue of Pharoah Sanders Quintet, originally released in 1965. Recorded on September 10, 1964, prior to his well-known association with John Coltrane, this eponymous album (later renamed Pharoah's First) is the debut release of the iconic tenor saxophonist, Pharoah Sanders. (Yes, there are some spelling oddities here: the artist -- birth name Ferrell -- only later changed the spelling from the standard Pharaoh to the more personalized Pharoah). With one foot in mainstream jazz -- pianist Jane Getz had played with Charles Mingus -- and the other, tentatively at times, in the avant-garde, this is a fascinating glimpse of Sanders's style before he wielded the unremitting fierceness of his playing with Coltrane and the modal mysticism of his later solo albums on Impulse. Interestingly, in recent years he has deployed a more polished version of this sort of avant-flavored bop, bringing his career full circle and strongly suggesting that the hybrid heard here was not due to any failure of nerve on his debut but rather was the cornerstone of his conception. ESP-Disk has issued this album under three different covers; for its 21st-century reissue on vinyl, they have chosen to use the second and most beautiful. It is augmented with liner notes by a current ESP-Disk artist, tenor saxophonist Ras Moshe Burnett of The Red Microphone, who can be heard accompanying Amina Baraka on their eponymous release (ESPDISK 5021CD, 2017). Personnel: Pharoah Sanders - tenor saxophone; Stan Foster - trumpet; Jane Getz - piano; William Bennett - bass; Marvin Pattillo - percussion.

BLEY TRIO, PAUL Closer LP
When Oscar Peterson moved from Montréal to New York in 1949, then-17-year-old Paul Bley took over Peterson's residency at the Alberta Lounge on Peterson's recommendation; in his 20s, Bley played with Charlie Parker. Bley incorporated maverick pianist Lennie Tristano's approach to improvisation and collaborated with Charles Mingus, and in 1958 in Los Angeles famously put together a band with Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, and Billy Higgins. His move into free improvisation in the groundbreaking Jimmy Giuffre 3 brought him acclaim. After moving to New York, he was one of the performers at the Cellar Café in Bill Dixon's 1965 four-day "October Revolution in Jazz" festival, which led to Bley being one of the co-founders shortly thereafter of the Jazz Composers Guild. It was in the midst of that fabled month that Bley recorded his first LP for ESP-Disk' (sixth overall to that point), Barrage. Bley returned to the studio for his second ESP-Disk' LP a bit less than two months later. Closer finds Bley again heavily featuring then-wife Carla's compositions; she's credited on seven of the ten tracks, including two also heard on Barrage, "Batterie" and "And Now the Queen." They sound quite different on this quieter trio date, and the performances are more concise (no track tops the 3:30 mark). Paul Bley included one of his own tunes, "Figfoot," as well as Ornette Coleman's "Crossroads" and future-wife Annette Peacock's "Cartoon." Closer features Bley's distinctive pianism in one of its earliest recorded manifestations. The other players are fellow Jimmy Giuffre 3 member Steve Swallow (bass) and, in his recording debut, Barry Altschul (percussion).

TALIBAM!/MATT NELSON/RON STABINSKY Hard Vibe LP
Talibam! delights in creating music that cannot be pinned down within the safe-spaces of existing genres. With each new album, Talibam! reinvent their methodological palette in order to bolster a fresh clarity of joyous auditory surprise, something their fans have come to depend on. Talibam! focus on compositional clarity, with reverence for their diverse interest in genre. On Hard Vibe, they push the pulse of motorik rhythm through a psychedelic jazz filter. This time out, they have created a sonic edifice so radical, so intricate in its density that additional hands were required to bring it to life; thus was born the Talibam! Hard Vibe Band with Matt Nelson (Battle Trance, tUnE-yArDs) and Ron Stabinsky (Mostly Other People Do the Killing, Peter Evans Quintet, Relâche) joining Matthew Mottel (CSC Funk Band, Alien Whale, Nymph, Platinum Vision) and Village Voice "Best Drummer in New York" Kevin Shea (Mostly Other People Do the Killing, Rhys Chatham, People featuring Mary Halvorson). The scientists in the Talibam! laboratory describe the results thusly: The Hard Vibe composition transforms aspects of rhythm changes into a disciplined sequence of minor key modulations to create a rigorous Hard Vibe obstacle course for the soloists over a tight melodic/rhythmic grid. Inspired by Herbie Hancock's '70s cosmic music, long-form repetitive works such as Miles Davis's On The Corner (1972), Charlie Parker's "Salt Peanuts," tenor sax endurance soloists, Albert Ayler's New Grass (1699), the legendary organ brutality of Larry Young, and the NYC avant-garde rock minimalism of Rhys Chatham and Glenn Branca, Hard Vibe maintains an infectious pulse with virtuosic structural jazz improvisation. The Jan Hammer/'80s soundtrack-inspired keytar payoff (second half of side B) brings festival audiences to its feet in epic dance and ripping solo proportions. But those are inspirations more than ingredients. As ESP-Disk would say, "You never heard such sounds in your life."

TALIBAM! Endgame Of The Anthropocene LP
Endgame Of The Anthropocene marks Talibam!'s return to ESP-Disk, a partnership that started in 2009 with the highly acclaimed Boogie In The Breeze Blocks album (ESPDISK 4055CD). Talibam! is a 14-year working unit based in New York City that can be described in various ways -- as a classic keyboards/drums expanded-jazz duo, as Dadaist provocateurs with an innate love for the history of music, as a Fluxus-informed theater troupe, as an electronic ensemble inspired by Stockhausen, or as a rhythm section at the cross hair of agility, speed, punctuation, and intention. Since their inception in 2003, Talibam!'s ultimate goal has been to wed disparate ideologies through proficiency, controversy, inquiry, and compassion. Every Talibam! album attacks from a different angle; Endgame continues this tradition of each new release sounding completely different from everything they've done before, as does Hard Vibe (ESPDISK 5015LP). Talibam! has made a geo-psychic prediction: after it expires in 2048, the Antarctic Treaty System will be rejected. As the rest of the planet will have been rendered uninhabitable due to wars rooted in overpopulation, global warming, and the relentless exploitation of diminishing resources, human interference and the failure to ratify will lead to international war over the sovereignty and control of Antarctica's vast resources. Endgame Of The Anthropocene is Talibam!'s first cinematic album of through-composed eco-gothic geo-sonics. It is the soundtrack to 2048's despotic nationalism and crumbling international infrastructure, underscoring an eco-mercantilistic tragedy and the desperate plundering of the last pristine landscape on Earth. This inevitable destruction of Antarctica's purity marks the global-environmental endgame of the Anthropocene. Endgame Of The Anthropocene is a dystopian sonic pronouncement of failed socio-environmental memes, and features Talibam!'s emergence into hyperkinetic rhythm-based instrumental/electronic music. Syncopation via polyrhythmic electronic drum and synth pads create corporeal dance floor beats that would make a super computer perturbed. Kevin Shea is a master of cyber swing and eco-war rhythm -- on this record, he keeps it android yet anthropoid, like Aphex Twin meeting a hologram Phil Collins. Keyboardist Matt Mottel anchors wide sweeps of analog synthesis -- his sonic palette oscillating between the Silver Apples, Sun Ra, and Arca via an Arduino beta bass drop. This music is hallucinatory composition -- electronic muzik via an ethnographic sonic landscape influenced by Parmegiani, Don Cherry, Front 242, Hailu Mergia, Vangelis, Suicide, Islam Chipsy, Stockhausen, and DJ Shadow.

VA Bollywood Bloodbath: The B-Music of the Indian Horror Film Industry 2LP
2017 repress; Double LP version. After what seems like a thousand years of blood, sweat, tears, and a lot more blood, the zombified disc-disciples at Finders Kreepers unveil one of their most exquisite, exhumed, ectoplasmic, and existentially essential collections yet. This musical mausoleum of malformed freak funk and dreadful discothèque pop has been resurrected from the maligned cinematic subculture of Bombay's bloodthirsty horror film industry and witnesses the cognoscenti of the Bollywood pop scene at their most creative, destructive, and experimentally effective. Bollywood Bloodbath features India's finest composers, such as Bappi Lahiri, R. D. Burman, Sapan Jagmohan, and Laxmikant-Pyarelal, making the kind of radical risk-rock that would, under normal circumstances, have studio security escorting these overworked maestros off-set for a well-earned break or a relaxing exorcism. You've heard Italy's most famous composers when they soundtrack unwatchable Roman slasher flicks on their own uncompromised and underpaid terms? Well that blueprint just turned blood-red with sub-shoestring, low-budget studio wizards gambling with rigor mortis rock, disjointed disco, and low-voltage electronics for seldom-screened scenes of desi Draculas, lycanthropic ladykillers, and psyched-up swamp monsters. The factual history of the untraveled Bollywood horror phenomenon is fully re-exhumed with this compendium in true Finders Keepers style. Carefully documenting the drummy theme from the first-ever 1949 Indian ghost film, this benchmark collection follows the sinister lineage as directors of bloody thrillers take chances on shuddering synopsis and haywire special effects. Leading up to the inauguration of the notorious Ramsay Bros film company (whose sibling revelry in the '70s and '80s lead to the inclusion of flight-style puke bags in participating picture houses), this compilation pulls no punches and plunges the "B" of Bombay into the heart of the B-movie, squirting a masala of bloody ketchup and red wine onto the sets of Bollywood's glorious filmic musicals. Licensed exclusively from the independent Indian film music companies (revealing incidental tracks that they didn't even know they owned), Bollywood Bloodbath is the result of avid stomach-turning research via VHS tapes, chewed-up cassettes, and LPs, 12''s, and 45s, remastered from some of the only existing master tapes; presented for both the hairy home listeners and daring DJs. Also includes tracks by Rajesh Roshan, Hemant Bhosle, Ratandeep Hemraj, Usha Kanna, Khemchand Prakash, and Nadeem & Shravan.

Dario Rojo Guerra, aka Natureboy Flako, is back with a new six-song EP. Natureboy Flako is a collection of music culled from over 200 recording sessions since Guerra moved from London to Berlin in late 2015. Natureboy Flako uses old analog equipment, as well as newer instruments. Where previous songs relied on overdubs, most of these songs were recorded in one take, with little overdubbing, making it his most live record to date. The A side features some of the heaviest tracks he's made and the cinematic B side is made up of more reflective compositions.

BIG L Lifestylez Ov Da Poor & Dangerous CD BOX
"2015 was the 20th Anniversary of this undisputed New York classic from the late, great, Harlem MC, featuring production from D.I.T.C. legends Showbiz, Buckwild and Lord Finesse. As fans have come to expect, Get On Down gives this incredible record the respect it deserves with this unique reissue package. The album itself was another shot across the bow of mid-90s pundits who were prophesizing the death of New York's boom-bap dominance. Alongside recent classics from Nas, Biggie, Mobb Deep and Smif N Wessun, Lifestylez Ov Da Poor & Dangerous laid out the ascendancy of another visionary MC who could throw down brags punchlines with the best of them, but who never veered away from truly thoughtful lyrical dialogue. Most tracks on the album feature slower tempos, which gave the soon-to-be-immortalized MC the chance to fully explore a range of flows and approaches. Cases in point include the two commercial singles -- 'Put It On' and 'MVP' -- as well as the promo-only single 'Street Struck,' the latter produced by Lord Finesse and containing perhaps L's deepest rhymes on the album. There are also some great posse cuts here, starting with '8 Iz Enuff,' which was all about exposing L's crew (including Herb McGruff, Mike Boogie and Buddah Bless); and the amazing 'Da Graveyard,' which let established peers like Lord Finesse and Grand Daddy I.U. flow alongside another newcomer to the scene named Jay-Z. Less-renowned but no less crucial album cuts like 'All Black' and 'I Don't Understand It' help to tie it all up in a beautiful boom-bap package, with production by and from legends in the game that vaulted Big L into the national spotlight. L would be tragically taken from us in 1999, so this album -- along with 2000's posthumous The Big Picture -- will always be special to fans. Big L was a huge talent with the world in front of him, and it's only right to celebrate his life again on the 20th Anniversary of the album that started it all for him. This unique set features an in-depth liner notes booklet written and compiled by journalist Chris Faraone. The CD configuration is housed in a deluxe box with original album artwork wrapped around the cover."

MAYTALS, THE From The Roots LP
"When it comes to old-school roots reggae, few groups were as influential as The Maytals. Adding Frederick 'Toots' Hibbert's name to the front of their billing later in the 1970s, in the earliest days they were more egalitarian as they built their sound and legend. From The Roots, originally released on Trojan Records in 1970 (alongside another full-length that same year, Monkey Man), was a transitional record for the group. Leaving behind their early ska days -- much like The Wailers and other peers -- they had yet to settle into the slower tempos that blew in like ganja smoke by the mid-'70s. As a result, music here generally gallops, and vocals fall in line. As heard on gems like 'Koo Koo,' 'Got To Feel,' and 'Pee Pee Cluck Cluck,' the Maytals' lyrics tend mostly towards love and the pursuit thereof. The group, throughout its career, was also deeply spiritual and much of this was expressed through song -- a great case in point here is 'Thy Kingdom Come,' essentially a church hymn set to reggae music. And the album concludes with an interesting cover of the Lennon/McCartney hippie chestnut, 'Give Peace A Chance,' which is much faster than the original and quite groovy overall. The Maytals are generally overlooked in the pantheon of reggae giants, but this is unjust. Do your part in recognizing their legendary status by digging into this filling meal of classic Jamaican fare."

U-ROY Version Galore LP
"Classic reggae LP, which originally hit in 1971 and washed over the island like a grooving tropical storm. U-Roy was a true reggae pioneer, dubbed The Originator for good reason. Bursting onto the Jamaican scene in the early 1970s, he pioneered the vocal approach called 'toasting,' which in addition to bringing Jamaican music into a new era, was also heavily influential on an American vocal style also in its infancy: rapping. This full-length, his first after a string of singles (mostly on the Treasure Isle and other Duke Reid labels, run by the famed producer and studio owner), rolls like a crazy party where a wobbly, but talented, 'master of ceremonies' grabs the mic and won't let go. Speaking over and around songs that already have straight-ahead vocals on them, U-Roy shows the world why he is considered an iconoclast and trailblazer. In all honesty, there are few standouts on the album since they all run a similar course, and all are captivating in their own way. Modern listeners will especially note 'Tide Is High,' originally by the Paragons (featuring dulcet-toned vocalist John Holt) and recorded later as a 1980 smash hit by Blondie. Each track here is a new adventure, and while U-Roy's approach might take some getting used to, it will eventually capture your ears as it did the entire island of Jamaica in the '60s and '70s."

LARAAJI Ambient 3: Day of Radiance LP+CD
LP version. 180-gram vinyl. Gatefold sleeve. Includes CD. 2015 remastered reissue. Includes lengthy interview with Laraaji. Laraaji's glistening 1980 debut Ambient 3: Day of Radiance has from the beginning been considered an outlier. Though widely celebrated at that the time of its original release (as the third installment in Brian Eno's emerging ambient music series), the album also brought with it an aura of mystification. Where did it fit in? An uncharted synthesis of resonating zither textures, interlocking hammered rhythms, and 3-D sound treatments (courtesy of Eno), Day of Radiance seemed to push open many doors at once, ambient music being only one of them. Though there are certainly aspects of the album that find sonic common ground with other Eno-related "ambient" projects (on the tracks "Meditation #1" and "Meditation #2" in particular), the album is not easily boxed into a singular genre. Day of Radiance also mines the ethereal spiritualism of late-'70s new age music (of which Laraaji is considered a pioneer), the harmonic and rhythmic repetitions of American minimalists Terry Riley and Steve Reich, and traditional global sounds from India and Java (particularly gamelan music). And while Laraaji never explicitly embraced the "Fourth World" theories of fellow visionary and Eno collaborator Jon Hassell, Day of Radiance echoes a kindred exploratory exoticism. In the late '70s Brian Eno had relocated to New York City from London and had begun a period of fertile intersections with musicians in his adopted home. Laraaji recounts how he and Eno first crossed paths: "I was playing [zither] in Washington Square Park and I usually play with my eyes closed because I get into meditative trance states that way, and opening my eyes and collecting my little financial reward from that evening, there was a note, on notebook paper -- it looked like it had been ripped from somebody's expensive notebook -- there was a note that says 'Dear sir, kindly excuse this impromptu piece of message, I was wondering if you would be interested in talking about participating in a recording project I am doing, signed: Brian Eno.'" The album was completed in two sessions; the first one produced the faster, pulsing "Dance" compositions (on the A-side) and the second session yielded something closer to Eno's own ambient constructs -- slow zither washes and waves with more pronounced sound enhancements (on the B-side). While the album is deceptively simple in its construction, closer listening reveals its extraordinary depth of field and its polymath influences.

BARGOU 08 Targ CD
Lying between the mountains of northwest Tunisia and the Algerian border, the Bargou valley and the village named after it lie isolated, away from the world. It's poor, barren country, but standing apart, Bargou has developed its own culture that had never been documented until Nidhal Yahyaoui began the task. Born in the valley, he grew up hearing his parents and family sing the songs that belong to the region, and he was determined that the music and traditions shouldn't slip away into obscurity. "Nidhal began collecting songs from all over the valley more than ten years ago," explains producer and keyboard player Sofyann Ben Youssef, who's known Yahyaoui since they were both ten years old. "No one had ever done that before. He listened to the women, to the village elders, and he learned all the variations on the songs. This is his passion, and he asked me to join him." Together, they assembled a collective of both local and European musicians who spent three weeks playing in the Yahyaoui family home in Bargou village. They worked on the material, shaping a sound that harnessed the power of the tradition and connected it to something the young would understand. "It was important for us to record there and to use some local musicians on the record," explains Ben Youssef. "But we also wanted the young people in the village to see that something could be created right there and that they didn't need a lot of money to do it, to inspire them." Made over the course of three weeks in the Yahyaoui family home, Targ hews close to the tradition, taking its power from the root, with Ben Yousef's synthesizer adding subtle touches at the top and bottom ends. Bales of hay were piled up in the rooms to act as acoustic baffles. Ben Yousef set up in the kitchen, operating the recording equipment with one hand and playing Moog with the other. It was an improvised setup, but it captured the fire and energy of the musicians' performances. But it all revolves around Yahyaoui's voice. Raw and emotional, plaintive and passionate, it proudly bears all the weight of history. And underneath, the thick, fat bass carries the music firmly into the 21st century. The explosive rhythms of drums and percussion give a primal power to the bass grooves. It's the trance of the past emerging from out of the speakers. With Targ, Bargou 08 make sure that the valley and its people will never be forgotten. Lassaed Bougalmi: gasba and zokra (traditional reed instruments); Imed Rezgui: bendir (percussion); Nidhal Yahyaoui: vocals and wtar (oud-like instrument); Sofyan Ben Youssef: synthesizer and musical direction; Benjamin Chaval: drums.

IFRIQIYYA ELECTRIQUE Ruwahine CD
Sufi trance musicians and rituals -- from the depths of the Tunisian desert -- in conversation with post-industrial sonics. Ifriqiyya Electrique's François Cambuzat -- a guitarist and field recordist (Turkey, China, Central Asia) -- is a veteran of the Mediterranean punk and avant-rock scene, which has always been more politically charged than its counterparts to the north and (far) west. With bassist Gianna Greco, he is half of Putan Club (and one third when these two fierce and uncompromising players are joined by legend of the NY underground, Lydia Lunch). Ifriqiyya Electrique was formed in the Djerid desert in southern Tunisia. The Banga is a key annual event in the lives of the black communities of the oasis towns of southern Tunisia, descendants of the Hausa slaves transported from sub-Saharan Africa. It is a ritual of adorcism, not of exorcism; of accommodating the possessing spirit rather than expelling it. The invitation has been issued by the rûwâhîne themselves, the spirits from whom the record borrows its title, and is taken up primarily in the streets and in private houses. The Banga is a musical tradition, with stark, metallic, cavernous percussion, and voices of cool urgency, but should not be felt as such, for it is most defiantly a ritual and remains so on this recording. Cambuzat and Greco are joined in live performance by the voices, krakebs, and Tunisian tablas of three members of the Banga community, Tarek Sultan, Yahia Chouchen, and Youssef Ghazala, with a fourth, Ali Chouchen, providing vocals and nagharat on the recording itself. The voices and rhythms are unaltered, of course. What is new here is the conversation the group initiates between guitar, bass, and electronics and the rhythms and chants of the Banga -- what Cambuzat refers to a post-industrial ceremony. It won't be an easy listen for purists and propagandists; but if post-industrial ceremony doesn't describe a large portion of the most challenging music of the last 40 years, what does? In short, the music can only be fully understood in the context of the events that gave rise to it. Happily, Ifriqiyya Electrique is a film and documentary project as much as a band. The footage is astonishing: of wild, ecstatic gatherings that seem, to the un-initiates, by turns other-worldly and utterly familiar. It is familiar because of the need for "new ways of forgetting," in Cambuzat's words. But surely there is a need to remember too. For here is another deep tradition, another precarious music, on the brink: a vital part of a Sufi culture being pressed on all sides by the forces of reaction. Ifriqiyya Electrique will not be lamenting its passing -- because they will refuse to let it pass.

JUPITER & OKWESS INTERNATIONAL Kin Sonic CD
With their second album, Kin Sonic, Jean-Pierre Bokondji aka Jupiter and his band Okwess transcend the Congo's unexplored musical heritage and dive into a pool of modernity. It's a work of perfect alchemy, enriched by contributions from Damon Albarn of Blur and Gorillaz, violinist Warren Ellis of Dirty Three and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and Robert del Naja aka 3D of Massive Attack. Del Naja's input comes in the form of a unique and powerful album cover, the fee for which he decided to donate to an NGO called La Fondation Etoile du Congo de Madame Princesse Kibinda Mariam Rita, based in Lemba, the neighborhood in Kinshasa where Jupiter lives. At the beginning of the 1980s, Jupiter joined the band Famous Black, which later became Bongo Folk before finally settling on the name Okwess. Since then, Okwess has had many line-up changes but always kept the same captain at the helm. In 2006, a documentary called Jupiter's Dance, directed by Florent de la Tullaye and Renaud Barret, revealed this extraordinary personality to the world -- this Don Quixote who, in a dilapidated and abandoned environment, has fought stubbornly against the odds to keep his band alive. In 2013, the release of the album Hotel Univers gave Jupiter a certain international legitimacy as well as the opportunity to tour the world several times over. Its follow-up, Kin Sonic, features a reading by French actress and film director Sandrine Bonnaire (a Jupiter fan) of an extract from the book Bandoki (The Sorcerers) by Zamenga Batukezanga, an African philosopher and author with a vivid writing style who, though little known outside the Congo, was a familiar face in his neighborhood of Lemba, where he died in 2000. Thanks to the Congo's immense natural resources, half a century of independence resulted in the enrichment of a small handful of people and the impoverishment of everyone else, following a colonial era in which the seizure of natural wealth was the only rule. Just like Batukezanga's writing, Jupiter's lyrics focus on this painful past, and how to overcome it. Gathered around Jupiter are the Okwess faithful: Montana (of Staff Benda Bilili) on drums, Yendé on bass, guitarists Eric and Richard, and the singer Blaise. Produced by Marc-Antoine Moreau (Amadou & Mariam, Songhoy Blues) and François Gouverneur, Kin Sonic finds its voice in the exploration of a heritage that has remained totally hidden until now, and comes to take its place in a contemporary landscape where walls and borders are exploding in the face of a yearning to share moments of beauty and pure madness, all mixed up together.

DEADSMOKE Mountain Legacy LP
LP version. Mountain Legacy is an album exploring something fundamental to humanity: isolation. The illusion of silence, which is a natural non-existing concept, is perfectly described by synthesized sounds and noises of the newly acquired band member Claudio Rocchetti (In Zaire). These sounds are missing on the first self-titled Deadsmoke release (HPS 032CD/LP/LTD-LP, 2016), so now the old tracks have been enriched and new ones have been composed providing a consistent psych-disturbed synthesized sound. Six brand new tracks featuring deep guitar fuzz and growling bass take the listener on a journey through the woods, alternating lightly groovy rhythms with sludge-doom cadences. The album has been recorded live by Fabio at NoLogo, a studio located near Bolzano and surrounded by nature and a cemetery. This location and the inspiring recording room, fully covered in wood, carpets and soft lights, made it possible to arrange the recording as a sort of inspired jamming session, providing feelings of isolation, freedom, and nothingness. Everybody experiencing isolation and solitude on the mountain knows that the mind is constantly speaking. With a language made of noises. And the mountain itself is speaking. With a language made of slow, deep, grating, growling movements. This is what we try to represent with this album: a translation of how isolation can be felt. This is a precious legacy. The legacy of the previous album, the legacy of the mountain.

LORDS OF ALTAMONT, THE The Wild Sounds Of Lords Of Altamont LP
LP version. A hammered four-stroke beat like a twin cylinder engine running on idle, a roaring guitar riff revving up the rpms of the iron-built motorcycle-inspired band, then the fresh and insisting breeze of a Farfisa organ whispering "let's ride", and a heavy bass greasing up the reliable crank and rods of that authentic rock'n'roll machine, and there it goes ladies and gents, the mighty Lords Of Altamont combo! Riding hard on backyard-built, loud pipes, and rigid frame indestructible raw choppers, the band left their garage enlivened by the year of 1969, right at the crossroads of the Summer of Love and the birth of punk rock. Fueled up by the MC5, the Stooges, and the Chambers Brothers, to name a few, the pack follows Jake "The Preacher" Cavaliere (vocals, organ) on his uncompromising rock'n'roll journey ; Dani Sindaco (guitar), Rob Zimmermann (bass), and Steven Van Der Werff (drums) along with their front man are now spreading out The Wild Sounds Of Lords Of Altamont, their latest record, around the planet! Through fads and fashions, either on wax or on stage, the Lords can take you back to this era of freedom and rebellion with their hi-octane tunes. The gang has been already rocking the world for 17 years with spectacular performances, firmly run-in by five solid stainless records and they're now fine-tuned with this new release of ten powerful late-sixties tracks which manage to sound fiendishly contemporary. Our era needs the Heavy Psych Sounds label and the Lords real bad: nine new original stunning songs plus an arrogant and totally mind-blowing Howlin' Wolf cover ("Evil Is Going On"). Let's welcome the LA combo back and hit the road to rock'n'roll with the "Savage 4". SUPERPITCHER The Golden Ravedays 9 LP
Musically and emotionally, Superpitcher's third full-length studio album, The Golden Ravedays, is a one sound autobiography that exhibits the skill, feeling, and style that the artist has honed over a period of twenty years, musically, and forty-plus-years, emotionally. And full-length it is: The Golden Ravedays is an epic album of 24 tracks stretching over 12 respective chapter albums, released on Hippie Dance sequentially during a one-year period. Where number eight of the series took its listeners to outer space (TGR 008LP), number nine introduces two tracks that are an underwater celebration of all that is good and all that is sad. Side A features "Hiding". Imagine galloping sea horses pulling a Christmas chariot filled with dreams-come-true past enchanting mermaids, smiling sharks, waving tortoises, and nonplussed eels leaving a gifted blanket of mystical sound in their wake. "Hiding" stretches and breaks into many layers of listening love without enforcing one particular sound. Side B features "Flying". The piece is occupied by a sub-aquatic melody colored by whale sounds and the echoes of immersed guitar strings. "Flying" is not about complex development or diversity, but the weightless drifting of sounds that create a wonderfully hazy cloud to lose oneself in and fly, deliciously with the dolphins. Rest assured, the ending is speckled with whimsical chimes showers, paving the way for the softest of landings.

ELODIE Vieux Silence LP
LP version. Stephen O'Malley on Elodie, the project of Andrew Chalk and Timo van Luijk, and their album Vieux Silence: "Having been entranced by both Andrew Chalk's work with Mirror (and back to his solo works as Ferial Confine, plus multiple collaborations with David Jackman, The New Blockaders, Daisuke Suzuki, etc.), and Timo van Luijk (as Af Ursin, In Camera, La Poupée Vivante, and collaborations with Kris Vanderstraeten and others) for many years, I was naturally intrigued to hear about and hear their duo project Elodie. The project formed in 2010, and has spanned eleven beautiful albums already, to date. Vieux Silence for Ideologic Organ is their first release presented outside of their own record publishing nook, Faraway Press and La Scie Dorée. However this is not the first encounter between Ideologic Organ and Elodie, they performed at a night in London I curated in February 2012, alongside Jessika Kenney and Eyvind Kang. Elodie's performance was among the most delicately engaging and savant I have witnessed... so very quiet, with snow falling in London outside Cafe Oto's windows, the audience palpably entered a high intensity listening focus. The impression of this vivid memory is striking, considering how spare each of the individual elements present that night were. Vieux Silence, and Elodie in general, provoke a visual imagination in an instant, perhaps filtered through aged watercolor, tape grain, antique lenses, forgotten levels of listening, and observational patience. On this gorgeous album, Chalk and van Luijk also collaborate with piano, pedal steel, and clarinet (played by: Tom James Scott, Daniel Morris, and Jean-Noel Rebilly, respectively). Each detail carefully considered and coloring step-by-step, like an impressionist watercolor." Personnel: Tom James Scott - piano; Jean-Noël Rebilly - clarinet; Daniel Morris - guitar pedal steel. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering.

KARJALAINEN, HANNU A Handful Of Dust Is A Desert LP
LP version. Includes printed inner sleeve; Includes download code. Finnish visual artist and filmmaker Hannu Karjalainen's music draws inspiration from ambient, drone, modern classical, and dream pop. His first album Worms In My Piano was released in 2007 on Osaka Records and the second album, Hintergarten in 2009 on Simon Scott's Kesh Recordings. A Handful Of Dust Is A Desert, his third album, and the first under his full given name, arriving after a prolonged break. Hannu Karjalainen's association with Karaoke Kalk started with his remix of Dakota Suite's "The End Of Trying Part III" on The Night Just Keeps Coming In (KK 051CD, 2009). A Handful Of Dust Is A Desert opens with the track "Angel" which is a truly heavenly composition reminiscent of Boards Of Canada's finest work. "The Emigrant" makes effective use of sinister synth-lines and delicate glockenspiel patterns to invoke a kind of science-fiction soundtrack atmosphere. Throughout the record, the listener's ears are graced with truly sublime soundscapes and transcendent textures. The title track is actually the shortest tune on the album, but in no way less evocative. Its looped piano melodies are comparable with Susumo Yokota's later recordings in their minimalism and poise. "A Year In A Day" continues to walk the fine line between ambient and electronica, which is one of the albums great virtues: it shows how lively and eventful ambient music can be. Certainly ambient music benefits from having a strong pulse which Karjalainen demonstrates in various tracks on the album. The song "Love Is A Black Lion" features a sample from the afore mentioned Dakota Suite tune The End Of Trying Part III, and therefore somehow closes a circle. This powerfully contemplative album comes to a controlled landing with the majestic "Breaks My Heart She Aria"; another in a long line of mesmerizing drifts, with a floating choral voice delicately enveloped in strings and pitched percussion. A Handful Of Dust Is A Desert is instantly captivating and for lovers of ambient music, it is dream listening. As an artist who trained in photography and is mostly active in the world of visual art, Hannu Karjalainen clearly enjoys a great deal of creative freedom in his music. This is the kind of desert you won't mind getting lost in and you will even take pleasure in roaming through the expansive sonic landscapes and horizons it embodies.

MOLE, THE De La Planet 2LP
"I try to perform as honestly as possible" -- the soundbite borrowed from late dancer Dudley Williams for De La Planet's second track could have been uttered by The Mole himself. It's this candor that allows his listeners to bear witness to a very marked and very audible transition from his days as a producer in Montreal to becoming a part of the Berlin scene. And what is present here is one result of that very explicit sonic metamorphosis. De La Planet is The Mole's third studio album, one that stays true to his ethos of weird above all, in the best possible sense. And yet it feels like something distinctly new. Tapping his enormous reservoir of vinyl and sampling the odd film have acted as complement to the jaw-dropping arsenal of synthesizers at De La Planet's disposal -- a battery of machines he's been quietly improving his skills on during the past few years. Or not so quietly, perhaps. The man himself would probably say "I'm coming out of the woodshed", and go off on a tangent about Sonny Rollins and his saint of a wife. But that's a story for another sheet. While the days of Franco-Canadian dollar-record digging are behind him, this album is nothing if not quintessential Mole. And the opening "Harmony Day" lets you know you're in for a beautifully strange ride. But not without a dancefloor throwdown first -- by way of the symphony of pleas, bargains and one-line artist manifestos that is "Going With The Hat Man". From its own dizzying heights through to the sci-fi inflected thumps of "Braineater Returns", all the way to the earworm of a wonky cowbell in "He Frank", it's a charter through seldom explored lands. After "The Hat Man" gets the instrumental treatment, the album proceeds to "Sandwich Time Is Coming", which sounds like a sonic wink at the portrait of Prince presiding over Colin's turntables -- or is it the Klee illustration of a man expelling a smiling turd right next to it? "So What Don't You" has and inarguable thick percussive groove. The cinematic ambiance of "Soft Translation" and esoteric ripples of "River Highways" round out the trip, before "Time Out" sends you on our way with an early-aughties beat to march along to.

WHITEFIELD BROTHERS, THE Earthology 2LP
2017 repress. "Earthology is the long awaited follow up to The Whitefield Brothers cult-classic In The Raw. While In The Raw's hypnotic, defiantly psychedelic funk music was grounded in the great musical traditions of both America and Africa, Earthology finds the Brothers infusing their funk (or, as the Brothers prefer it, 'raw soul') with musical traditions that span the globe. To achieve the Earthology's unique sound, the Brothers employed an array of instruments and put in a dizzying amount of research: traveling the world, joining different bands and ethnic performing ensembles, amassing and absorbing field recordings, trawling used record bins for lost examples of global psychedelic-fusion, over a period spanning some fifteen years. Like In The Raw, Earthology is grounded by a 'raw soul' band's building blocks: drums, guitar, bass, keys and horns, but it is augmented by such exotic instruments as gongs and flutes from Asia, xylophones and string instruments from Africa and Central American percussion instruments. The use of African polyrhythms now seems commonplace on a funk or psych album; Arabic rhythmical structures, African pentatonic scales and Oriental modes do not. The Whitefield Brothers, and a multitude of guest ranging from vocalists Edan, Mr. Lif, Bajka, Percee P and MED to musicians from Antibalas, El Michels Affair, Quantic and the Dap- Kings, set these elements in a modern context and, over the course of thirteen dense tracks, blend them with the fierce funk their fans have grown to love."

VA Wake Up You! Vol. 1: The Rise And Fall Of Nigerian Rock (1972-1977) 2LP
2017 repress. "The Western world was in the throes of peace, love and flower power as Nigeria descended into Civil War in 1967. The rock scene that developed during the following three years of bloodshed and destruction would come to heal the country, propagate the world-wide ideal of the Modern Nigerian, and propel Fela Kuti to stardom after the conflict ended in 1970. Wake Up You! tells the story of this time, pays homage to these now-forgotten musicians and their struggle, and brings to light the funk and psychedelic fury they created as they wrested free of the ravages of the late 1960s and created thrilling, original Nigerian rock music throughout the 1970s. This 'standard' 2LP set follows the now-OOP Record Store Day edition. It comes with a download card with full audio and a 104 page digital booklet (as a .pdf) filled with never-seen photos and detailed liner notes by Nigerian musicologist and researcher Uchenna Ikonne (Who Is William Onyeabor?; Brand New Wayo: Nigerian Boogie and Disco, etc.), with all tracks fully licensed from the bands themselves."

MEGINSKY, JAKE Gates And Variations LP
"Gates And Variations rounds out a loose trilogy of records by Jake Meginsky for Open Mouth. Not an intended trilogy on Jakes part but it has become one to my mind. It has come to be how I listen to them and experience them, all informing each other, echoing and challenging each other and growing into each other's space and light like a garden of plants that would never actually coexist anywhere in reality. Jake is always tirelessly reaching for something new yet I'd avoid using the word progression here. It instead feels to me like the last piece of a puzzle, or of a world created by some Jack Kirby demigod. Something has been completed and now all the pieces are interchangeable. The first can go last. The middle can be first. The whole thing becoming a universe looping in on itself with a multitude of entry points and not a lot of exits. These are dense environments where sections can move from microscopic to macroscopic, day to night and back again, so effortlessly that it's hard to tell if it's intended or if something imperceptible within you shifted the locus of your perception. But it is all very intentional, something carefully carved to give the feeling of something, though unfamiliar and strange, organic and grown. There's a sense of danger here like warning transmissions, concussive roiling rhythms and jagged disturbances. Yet also clear straight lines giving way to enveloping curve and staggering beauty. Supplant the beginning with the end with the beginning." --Bill Nace, Philadelphia, PA, September 2017.

CLARKE, JOHNNY Enter Into His Gates With Praise LP
LP version. Radiation Roots present a reissue of Johnny Clarke's Enter Into His Gates With Praise, originally released in 1975. Along with his rival Cornell Campbell, Johnny Clarke was one of the most esteemed singers of the roots reggae era. Having grown up next door to a popular sound system on Waltham Park Road in western Kingston, Clarke's early fascination with music led him to hang out at Studio One with Jacob Miller while still at school. He then made the rounds of talent shows with Barry Brown, Sugar Minott, and the Diamonds, which led to a debut recording in 1973, for the pianist Glen Stair, which remains unreleased. An early effort for Clancy Eccles, "God Made The Sea And Sun", was not promoted properly, though "Everyday Wondering", for Rupie Edwards, impacted in Britain; "Golden Snake" for Stamma Houghton and a cover of Smokey Robinson's "You Really Got A Hold On Me" for Glen Brown were also false starts. The breakthrough finally came in 1975 when Clarke linked with Bunny Lee, who had him voice the Rastafari landmark "None Shall Escape The Judgement" (written by Earl Zero, who failed to muster a credible take), which kick-started the "flying cymbal" craze. Clarke's resultant debut album, Enter Into His Gates With Praise, mixed hard-hitting Rastafari devotional material with sympathetic cover versions of classics by the likes of the Paragons, Slim Smith, and Delroy Wilson, along with a few reggae renditions of some vintage American R&B.

BROWN, BARRY Step It Up Youthman CD
Radiation Roots present a reissue of Barry Brown's Step It Up Youthman, originally released in 1979. Roots reggae vocalist Barry Brown had a very distinctive singing style. His most obvious role model was the fragile tenor of Horace Andy, but Brown gave his delivery further distinctiveness with a range of wordless slurs, some of which were doubtless inspired by the creatures of the animal kingdom. As with his friend and fellow west Kingston resident, Johnny Clarke, Brown got his start in the many talent shows that were regularly held in the downtown Kingston area, and also got early experience on west Kingston sound systems such as Tape Tone, which gave rise to Barrington Levy, Triston Palmer, Sammy Dread, and Rod Taylor among others; Taylor and Brown even had a short-lived duo called The Aliens for a time. Such was his widespread popularity that several different producers all claimed to have been the first to capture his voice on tape, but it is undeniable that Bunny Lee was the first to bring Brown to prominence through the outstanding 1978 hit, "Step It Up Youthman", an optimistic meditation on the merits of self-determination, which led to this popular debut album of the same name; as with Johnny Clarke's 1975 album Enter Into His Gates With Praise (RR 318CD/LP), Step It Up Youthman mixed hard-hitting songs of Rastafari devotion with well-executed cover tunes.

Montreal stalwart Roger Tellier Craig (of Le Révélateur and Fly Pan Am) returns to Root Strata under his given name to offer a stunningly abstract pair of compositions indicating a severe departure from his earlier work. While Instantanés might at first evoke acousmatic and musique concrète traditions, the two side-long snapshots Roger presents feel far more spontaneous and rustic than those trappings might suggest, or as Luc Ferrari would say "a concrète music of the poor." A studied meditation over ten years in the making, Instantanés is a surreal mix of the familiar and the alien, a lush garden indifferent to human cultivation or experience. Includes download code.

CEMENT Utmaningen LP
Cement is from the island of Gotland, 200 miles east of Sweden's mainland. This island has always been different from the rest of Sweden in many ways, with their own strong dialect and mythology. The local mythology about Gotland, which dates back to the year 1350, holds that Gotland remained underwater during the daylight hours and only surfaced during the night because of a mysterious spell cast upon the island. Cement was formed during the autumn of 1973 by two guitar players (Björn Jonsson and Anders Åström) and two drummers (Ulf Abrahamsson and Thomas Harlevi). They were influenced by such bands as Mountain, Grand Funk Railroad, and of course the Swedish power trio November. They recorded Utmaningen in 1977 and released it in a limited run of 100 cassette tapes. This is the first LP release of the album. Instrumentally, Utmaningen is a tour de force, every bit as excellent as any of the better-known heavy rock album from the Swedish '70s. Heavy dual guitars, powerful bass, amazing drums, with fantastic production. 180-gram vinyl. Heavy sleeve. Includes two-page insert with liner notes and photos. Numbered edition of 400.

ALRUNE ROD Hej Du LP
Shadoks follows its reissue of the 1969 debut by Alrune Rod, of the most popular hippie bands from Denmark, and their third album (SHAD 187LP, 1972), with this reissue of Hej Du, their amazing second album from 1971. The band took its name from the Danish term for the mandrake root, inspired by the Danish author Albert Dam's 1962 book Syv Fortællinger (Seven Stories). The book contains a story in which a Robin Hood-like character is sentenced to death by hanging. At the jerk of the noose he ejaculates, a mandrake root grows up where his semen hits the ground, and a virgin collects and cares for the root, which in turn brings good fortune. Alrune Rod's musical style is often described as a hybrid between the Grateful Dead and early Pink Floyd. Hej Du is their real masterpiece. By late summer 1970 Alrune Rod had started recording the album and were given unlimited studio time at Vanløse Bio, a movie theater that housed and operated the Ivar Rosenberg Lydteknik studio at night after the final film screening. The studio was advanced for the time, with a home-built multi-track tape recorder that allowing for experimentation. Hej Du was released in June 1971 with promotional concerts by the new Alrune Rod scheduled across the country. Band member Leif Roden later recalled that Hej Du was on the radio charts for weeks during the summer of 1971, and sold a record-high 12,000 copies. According to the chart lists, Hej Du entered the bi-weekly top-ten album list on June 12, 1971 and stayed there until August 4, with a top position at number-three after Skousen & Ingemann's Herfra Hvor Vi Står and The Doors' L.A. Woman. Hej Du is as close to Pink Floyd's early sound as any other album from Denmark. Fantastic production and great, long, trippy, psychedelic tracks. 180-gram vinyl. Heavy sleeve. Includes printed inner sleeve and two-page insert. Numbered edition of 500.

Heavy Connection, recorded in 1978 with drummer Chrissy Zebby Tembo, features razor-sharp guitars, hard rhythms, and a mix of English and Zambian lyrics. Original copies are impossible to find. STALTERI, ARTURO ...E il Pavone Parlò alla Luna LP
Recorded in 1980 but only issued privately in 1987, Arturo Stàlteri's ...e il pavone parlò alla Luna falls among the last artifacts of Italy's great wave of musical minimalism. Like the movement to which it belongs, rigorously resistant to categorizations and definition, this overlooked marvel sculpts a startling singularity. A radical and democratic vision in sound, blending elements of new age, the avant-garde, and prog with Western and Indian classical musics. Highly talented pianist Arturo Stàlteri debuted in 1974 with Pierrot Lunaire, one of the most original and innovative groups of the Italian progressive scene. After the dissolution of the band he began an inspirational solo career with the prog opus Andrè Sulla Luna (1979); the following year a two-month trip to India left an important impression on him and inspired ...e il pavone parlò alla Luna, which stands as Stàlteri's true masterwork. A complex and ambitious hybrid, built around organ and piano, with each passage struggling for creative autonomy and dislodging themselves from the whole, yet remaining as accessible as they are challenging, to all those willing to heed the call. Despite its repetitive rhythms and cyclical tones, bound to American minimalism, ...e il pavone parlò alla Luna's complex relationships and breadth of territory locate it as a distinctly European work, a wondrous late breath, and a seminal entry in Italy's remarkable canon of avant-garde and minimalist music. A rippling oddity, not quite like anything else, reissued here on vinyl for the first time.

The contribution of Roberto Musci results in more esoteric and mystical side of the record and marks the beginning of a long and fruitful collaboration in which the arrangements of Venosta blend perfectly with the electronics and sound treatments by Musci. Forty-seven minutes of inspired Italian minimalism.

SEVERAL DEFINITIONS Reborn After The Road 2LP
LP version. After showcasing his knack for emotive productions via various EPs throughout his career, the Swiss artist Several Definitions now reveals his first full-length album. It should come as no surprise that the artist found familiarity in what he calls the "Berlin style" of electronic music and notably, that of Oliver Koletzki's Stil vor Talent. Reborn After The Road is an intense and emotional affair, consisting of 14 tracks crafted using field and live recordings, switching between analog and digital to mould a sonic atmosphere that emblazons the artist's core ethos. Although the personal experience that sparked the inspiration for the LP is far from pleasant, Several Definitions' style is audibly resolute. "Reborn After The Road", the album's eponymous track, creates a fitting intro for the healing process that is to follow. Its airy pads and majestic strings sonically stand at the epicenter of the expressive album. Several Definitions continues to explore these sounds on vaporous slices like "Pontcéard 32" or the more acidical "Last Breath". The mellifluous, feminine vocals of LaMeduza on "Learn To Feel" and "Her", as well as Spanish singer Goldsun's crooner talents on the introspective "Trust", on the other hand, showcase Several Definitions' ability to work the human voice into his musical explorations. Taking introspection one step further towards darker realms, "Senelity" then feels like a rite of passage into the deeper and more intense segment at the album's core. "Over You" briefly signals a turning point, with its alarm-like synths and grave leads, which is then followed by the glitchy resistance on "Modular Spaces". "The Escape" presents itself as a natural occurrence after the string of turbulent, sometimes conflicting feelings -- it is a final attempt at evading the depths of animosity. Next, "Dancing With The Valkyrie" comes in as a determined resolution, introducing a new wave of more enduring, complacent moods, also evident on "Help" and "Don't Stop To Fall". Preparing the exit by way of straight-to-the-point techno, "Target Topic" rolls into "Her", the final piece of the emotional puzzle. Conceptually, Reborn After The Road is the sonic vessel for a cathartic process, conjuring up atmospheres reminiscing of different phases in life: childhood, the strength of unconditional love, and the inevitable sorrow that accompanies death. The humanity of the emotions on show explains the music's universal appeal, as Several Definitions offers the listener a glimpse into an artistic healing process.

DIGITAL DANCE Digital Dance 002 LP
After the album Total Erasement (SR 366LP, 2014), that includes the more "professional" studio recordings of Digital Dance, Digital Dance 002 is the re-release of their last cassette tape, originally released in 1981, reflecting another side of their work and the beginnings of what was to come. Stéphan Barbery of Digital Dance on the release: As the first single of Digital Dance, "Radioactivity/Computer Rock" (1979), was far from convincing for us, we created our own label, Digital Records, and released our second single, "I Sleep On The Waves/Faulty" (1979), 'Digital 001', in 1979. Afterwards, we released a cassette tape, the 'Digital Tape 002', which reflected another side of our work: not only songs but more experimental music, a work based on improvisation up to change parts of the musicians (e.g., guitarist on the drums and vice versa, reviving the very beginnings of the band). The recording was done then with very little, a cassette recorder in the middle of the rehearsal room. This record, Digital Dance 002, contains the entire 'Digital Tape 002' cassette, as recorded and compiled by Jerry WX in 1980. The sound was remodeled and mastered in 2017."

SIROM I Can Be A Clay Snapper LP
LP version. Includes download code. Hailing from Slovenia, Sirom play vividly textured instrumental folk musics in which handmade global instrumentation meets fearless sound exploration. Samo Kutin and Ana Kravanja first met at the improvisational music workshops conducted by leading Slovenian improviser Tomaz Grom and Japanese improvisational percussionist Seijiro Murayama. Other shared influences include classical minimalism and global musics. The couple eventually formed the kalimba-based duo Najoua, before forming Sirom with Iztok Koren. The band's emergent sound oscillates between a wide array of acoustic folk sounds and contemporary post-rock meditations, often drifting from improvisation to structured composition and then back. The trio describes it as "imaginary folk" or "folk from a parallel universe." According to Kutin, the guiding concepts of their music-making are: "To play on acoustic instruments, to work with repetition and a common sound. Each of us can play a simple thing, but the overall result is that a complex thing comes to life. The quality of sound depends on the combination of the instruments and that's why we modify and prepare instruments or create our own." As an avid sound-seeker, Kutin began to develop an interest in building instruments out of everyday objects like drawers, computer boxes and other "junk" (as he lovingly calls his creations), in addition to re-tooling the ones he brought back from his globetrotting adventures (which have included personal encounters with local musicians in India, Morocco, Mali, Greece, and elsewhere). In the little village of Lesno Brdo, tucked in the rolling hills six miles south of Ljubljana, Kravanja and Kutin organize music performances and festivals on a farm they rent, and divide their time between music-making and vegetable farming. With I Can Be A Clay Snapper, the trio have devised a work of fearlessly textured sonic landscapes both linked to and unbound by the past and present, geography and tradition, the real and imagined. Hypnotic, otherworldly, and epic, Sirom's music moves like the restless waters of their homeland. No matter how hushed or slow it may seem, it is never standing still. Iztok Koren: banjo, three-string banjo, bass drum, percussion, chimes, balafon, objects; Ana Kravanja: violin, viola, ribab, cünbüs, balafon, ngoma drum, mizmar, objects, voice; Samo Kutin: lyre, balafon, one-string bass, frame drums, bra?, gongoma, mizmar, objects, voice.

NICELY, NICK Sleep Safari LP+CD
LP version. Includes CD. Sleep Safari is the new album from indie electronic artist Nick Nicely. The first single "Ghostdream", labeled as "Absolutely gorgeous" and "Euphoria" by BBC6, heralds new horizons for psych legend. Sleep Safari goes further into electronics while continuing the artist's psychedelic journey, creating a unique pop juxtaposition. There's also all the usual twists and turns, tuneful inventions and abstractions so revered after Nicely's previous releases on Captured Tracks, Cherry Red, EMI, and Burger Records. Further to the success of "Ghostdream", with album release and gigs in addition to his forthcoming Hollywood soundtrack debut, 2017 will be quite a year for him. Nick has often looked beyond the obvious in matters electronic from early electro-psych fantasies like "DCT Dreams" (1981) and "Hilly Fields" (2012) through to his acclaimed second album, 2014's eerie epic Space Of A Second. "Utterly remarkable . . . profoundly psychedelic" --Clash Magazine. Tapete Records present the latest chapter in Nick's sonic journey. Sleep Safari is an homage to unconsciousness, lyrically exploring sleep's mysteries through a surrealist eye. It opens with the line "3am, you wake, the dream begins". Suddenly you're underwater, hold your psychic breath... it's a Sleep Safari. Includes a remix by Grasscut.

75 DOLLAR BILL Wood/Metal/Plastic/Pattern/Rhythm/Rock LP
2017 repress. 75 Dollar Bill, a project by Che Chen and Rick Brown present Wood/Metal/Plastic/Pattern/Rhythm/Rock. "Che's interest in the Arabic modes of Mauritanian music has marked our sound quite a bit but I have brought some things, too. The plywood crate I play is a big factor, defining, by its positive qualities (a nice warm 'boom' sound) as well as by its simplicity, what we're likely to do in the percussion realm. Wood/Metal/Plastic/Pattern/Rhythm/Rock, this new record, differs quite a bit from the previous one, notably in the rhythmic 'tone.' Wooden Bag (2015) was all forward momentum, stomping and shaking, but the new record explores a long-standing interest of mine: odd and 'compound' meters. In most of my previous musical activities, I've convinced my partners to delve into this, but in 75 Dollar Bill it has just felt natural and I believe Che's modal investigations and melodic/harmonic tendencies enhance (and are enhanced by) this combination. The current record differs from the last in another big way: reinforcements! Over our few years together, Che and I have frequently had friends play with us at some of our gigs. There have been all sorts of permutations of instruments and some great friends/players who don't all appear on this record but here we are lucky to have a bunch of them: Cheryl Kingan (of The Scene Is Now) on baritone and alto saxes, Andrew Lafkas (of Todd Capp's Mystery Train) on contrabass, Karen Waltuch (of Zeke & Karen) on viola, Rolyn Hu (of True Primes) on trumpet and Carey Balch (of Knoxville's Give Thanks) on floor tom. Please enjoy Wood/Metal/Plastic/Pattern/Rhythm/Rock. 'Earth' saw is one of our earliest tunes and, I think, the first result of this 'compound meter' approach. It's a slow 9 beat phrase Che came up with for this odd groove. 'Beni Said' has no fixed rhythmic cycle but a roughly unison melodic phrase and a pulsing, loose feeling of 3s and 4s played using a box full of bottle caps. 'Cummins Falls' features Carey Balch on Diddley-beat floor tom and me reprising the maracas. 'I'm Not Trying To Wake Up' is another of our compound meter songs, this one using an 18 beat scheme." - Rick Brown

PSYCHIC HEALTH Exclusion LP
If Psychic Health's self-titled debut album (2015) took the lessons the LA duo learned in the teeming clubs of Berlin and Melbourne, their latest LP, Exclusion, looks inward; it's a document of the duo tunneling down the studio wormhole. As such, Exclusion is a remarkably dynamic effort, adeptly jumping between evocative ambience ("Jamaica 88", "Ryso") and equally expansive dancefloor fair. Examples of the latter, such as the album's obvious centerpiece and titular track, "Exclusion", document Gabriel Mounsey and Devon Steffens's harnessing modular beast technology for peak techno utility, finding a clear thoroughfare between the soaring strings of Derrick May's classic Transmat releases and Ostgut Ton's current EBM-inflected precision. As you'd expect from Mounsey's background in film composition, Exclusion whirls with imagery. It's a Los Angeles album, but focuses on raw beauty of the city at night -- the lights in the distance, and the desolate downtown streets where kick drums often waft from disused warehouses. While their debut album opened notable doors for the group, landing distribution from Hard Wax and a feature in the Netflix series Sense8, Exclusion is an altogether masterful turn for Psychic Health, their complete studio immersion, easing the listener into deeply hypnotic states.
