JING Adularescence LP
"My grandma went blind before I was born. She knows who I am and she knows my voice better than I do. I believe the 'Jing' in her mind is a deeper version of myself, and one I aim to keep on discovering."Discovering a passion for music from an early age whilst working in a music store in Taipei, Taiwanese creative, electronic live performer, DJ, and composer Jing writes short stories and produces musical soundscapes to convey them -- like a short film without the visuals, the opposite of a silent movie. Completing her latest project a year after its inception, Adularescence will be released on 12" via Steve Bicknell's 6dimensions. The label, nominated in the "Breakthrough Label" category of DJ Mag's "Best of British" poll in 2017, uses philosophy of the human mind as a conceptual starting point for its output. Jing aims to take the listener on an intense journey, challenging her audience by providing a unique environment without seeing it with their own eyes. If visuals are no longer present, can we hear a deeper story? While the content of Adularescence is colorful, it represents a black-and-white cult-classic filled with emotions. It is accompanied by a short story on its sleeve, a narrative to its 12 experimental parts, taking the listener on an unforgettable trip. Dark, psychedelic sounds permeate the eardrum, a beautiful and disturbing concoction of images relating to the text. Jing herself pictures a suffocating man who cannot scream. In order to pursue her curiosity of music Jing realized she would need to relocate to Europe. Following her life's natural path she cemented foundations through encounters along the way, and shortly after arriving in Berlin, formed an electronic dream pop band Polygothica with close friend Dilijana. She is also a member of the performance collective UNDO alongside Bifi Boy, Birds and Tapes, DJ Nytanata, Otto Oscar Hernandez Ruiz, and visual artist Christian Starz, creating environments in various cities to host UNDO's experiments. Jing has performed at numerous underground events, festivals and clubs, including Fusion, Nacht Digital, Kranichie, West Germany, De School, Korner, and Organik Festival, to name a few. Drawing on an array of influences, cult films and fiction, Jing is an explorer, out to share her creations...

ESTEVES DA SILVA/MARIO FRANCO/SAMUEL ROHRER, JOAO PAULO Brightbird CD
A gentle maelstrom! João Paulo Esteves da Silva, Mário Franco, and Samuel Rohrer together combine all the qualities that are currently making this most classical chamber-music format of jazz so successful. Intuitive understanding, transparent flows of communication between the musicians, their actions and reactions, soloistic sequences that continue the balanced flow of sounds, as well as musical culture and noblesse. This trio does not boast but trusts the spaces between the notes. Yet its music develops a pull, gently insisting, that becomes ever more plausible. Nobody in this trio acts in an authoritarian way. Everything breezily interlinks following a collective thought; catchy, sometimes almost song-like and always of iridescent beauty. The trio is not defined by melodic bliss, melancholy, or the pure pursuit of harmony. It searches in the openness of improvisation, dispensing with ready-made intentions for a piece or composition. It transforms what is found into concise sonic images, which maintain rigor and concentration because they do not become unruly under the musicians' fingers. Themes are illuminated without being overworked. Subtle free flights of fancy are interwoven. There is lyrical introspection as well as an intricate groove, and everything occurs far away from routine. This balanced develops its strength from congenial casualness. Improvised bagatelles add together to form an unobtrusive bath of sound because no-one feels the need to exhibit their virtuosity. The playing of pianist João Paulo Esteves da Silva is shaped by the worlds of jazz and fado, classical, and folklore. Virtuosity yes, but soulful depth is even more important to him. In such contexts, bassist Mário Franco is also an ideal choice for the line-up. As a musician at home also in the classical repertoire, his warm, smooth sound is now enormously in demand. He his warm, smooth sound is now enormously in demand, which has made him a playing partner of well-known jazz musicians. Playing in comparable trios, the Swiss citizen of the world and urbane nomad Samuel Rohrer is one of the influential improvisational musicians of his generation and has gained the experience required for this intuitive communication with double bass and piano. This album is not an umpteenth variant on the plethora of piano trios, but leaves the pure jazz idiom to stride across further territories: wide awake and lost in dreams.

GHOST MUSIC I Was Hoping You'd Pass By Here CD
Southend quartet Ghost Music present their evocative debut album I Was Hoping You'd Pass By Here. They create careful, considered songs, weaving lo-fi lullabies with gliding guitars and understated arrangements. Influenced by Silver Jews, Flying Nun and K Records, they explore themes of nature, love, loss, and a melancholic English romanticism embellished with beautifully spectral melodies and executed with startling subtlety. Ghost Music revolves around the songwriting partnership of Matt Randall and Lee Hall, who had played together in the '90s with John Peel favorites Beatglider. Randall has recently received critical acclaim as Plantman, with his three albums -- 2010's Closer To The Snow (ARLEN 006CD, 2013), Whispering Trees (ARLEN 003CD, 2013), and To The Lighthouse (ARLEN 008CD, 2016) -- receiving high praise. When Randall and Hall reunited to collaborate on another album together, they brought in the talents of Roy Thirlwall on bass (Melodie Group) and Leighton Jennings on drums (Dark Globes) to complete the band. The original idea would be that the songs would be "ghosts" and create "ghost music" to resurrect and dust off old songs that they had already started. Lee had found the beginnings of "Home Dog" on a dusty old 4-track and he had recorded "Strange Love" on his iPhone in 2014, whilst Matt had written "My Cloud" as far back as 1997 (the night he moved out of his parents' house). As the album began to take shape, the ghostly premise took a back seat, as they began to breathe new life into the songs they found the impetus to write new ones. Randall explains the songwriting process: "When we were in Beatglider together and in the past we'd made a 'thing' out of writing long songs with a lot of changes. This time we pared it back a bit and stuck to the melodies more. We really wanted to make a proper guitar record. Lee's my favorite guitarist and it was lovely to see him stretch out on these songs with his diamond fingers." Not afraid to wear their influences on their sleeves, Ghost Music's sound is instantly familiar, echoing beloved bands from the '90s such as Pavement, Galaxie 500, Yo La Tengo, and even old-school rock n' roll. Yet Ghost Music's work never feels derivative, being instead effortlessly emotive, melancholic, and affecting, creating a world of sound that is hugely reassuring and a tonic for the modern age.

KAWABATA/RICHARD PINHAS/TATSUYA YOSHIDA, MAKOTO Trax CD
Makoto Kawabata (Acid Mothers Temple), Richard Pinhas (Heldon), and Tatsuya Yoshida (Ruins). What else is there to say? Richard Pinhas is one of the more atypical French musicians of the last 40 years. He has been surprising everyone all these years -- Always appearing where you expect him the least. Makoto Kawabata, who has been a big follower of Heldon, has also been a longtime friend and partner of Tatsuya Yoshida. So naturally, these three reunited in 2016 at the Studio Condorcet in Toulouse (France) to record a series of fiery improvisations and experimentations. Free noise, blues, and psychedelia are all intertwined, but there is an uneasiness to it, some anxiety matting the mix. The music is relentlessly broken down: percussive guitars turned bewitching metronome, while other guitars are taken on a sometimes lyrical but always chaotic journey, keeping the listener on edge. Repeat listens will trigger memories of German psychedelia or even the more recent noise rock or no-wave. Every title is named "Trax" followed by a number. The second "Trax" flirts with bands such as Can in their most primary form; that's to say that it's obsessivly repetitive. But the trio is so skillful that they turn influences into subliminal messages. Each "Trax" is a sonic outburst, relentlessly following each other. The musicians expose their most expressive and unbridled sides; it's a free music but without the permanent collapse. Richard Pinhas's guitar is a bit like Sonny Sharrock's, but with some sort of Sonic Youth treatment applied to it, and you still can spot those particular effects reminiscent of the Heldon years. CD version comes in a digisleeve.

FUJI-YUKI Orient LP
Fuji-Yuki is a Japanese female vocalist known as a member of the ethereal drone pop duo Sarry. She is influenced by ancient music, Buddhist ritual music, krautrock, progressive rock, noise music, and abstract experimental music. Her vocal styles include unusual singing approaches: minimal phrase repetition, voice drone, etc. Her voice works as one of a number of great instruments. Many artists have played with her original abstract sounds. Makoto Kawabata (of Acid Mothers Temple) on Fuji-Yuki: "If it were possible to project sound through a crystal, it would probably sound something like this. Like a book of prophecy where multiple speculations are blended together, its intimations and allusions left obscure. And at the same time it's like infringing some taboo by creating a rapport with memories of a distant, past life. Weird hymns that waver between curiosity and dread." For fans of Djong Yun (Popol Vuh) and Lisa Gerrard. Edition of 200.

ROUGH & WOJTYLA Side R & Side W LP
The Rough & Wojtyla album Side R & Side W offers a 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle that recreates a monochromatic landscape. Drones are supported by tentative jazz drum beats, and just when you think you have found some stability in the listening, ruptures happen and multiply. In perfect harmony, the two musicians don't take themselves seriously; they saturate their sonic world with long abstruse silences, before returning more furiously into the barely hidden chaos. The listener is constantly pushed around, always looking for something to hang on to without ever finding it. But concretely, what might one find in the music? Maybe Walter Ruttman and his Weekend (1930)? Or maybe Albert Ayler? Some Stockhausen? When the fury of the sax swirls around the siren, it's a bit of Cluster taking a trip to the land of free-jazz that rips the thick veil of the oppressing yet liberating first part. Or this disco rocket, which for a very precise 15 seconds would have you believe that expectations might be met. But nothing that comes next resembles what has just crumbled. The duo is enjoying itself with this collage, this assembly of sonic decadence where nothing holds, not even the bearing walls. This structure is ready to crumble at any moment. The krautrock-inspired electro passages get entangled, but the experience of the two musicians prevents them from falling into the too obvious influence of Can's Tago Mago (1971). So what to do now? What is there to understand when the cellos cry on this fragment of post-rock without reference? The tapes are altered, sped up, it sways and it dances as if it's inside a schizophrenic brain that can't stop spinning. This record's 35 minutes will just hit you across the head. The music meanders constantly; funk, jazz, rock, all incorporated without an apparent link. The constant pace of ruptures leaves you almost dizzy. But this is not random, the whole is a serious abstract or cubic masterpiece you can't keep your eyes off of in fear of missing a nuance or a sound. And maybe that's it and nothing else: art. The capacity to take someone's gaze and direct it towards an incomprehensible evidence. Personnel: Robert G. Rough - electronics, field recordings, various other instruments; Karol Wojtyla - drums, saxophone. Recorded, mixed, and edited by Robert G. Rough. Edition of 200.

KAOS KARMA 11 43 LP
11 43 is the third Kaos Karma album. Still very much inspired by current experimental blues or rock n' roll, this album is a bit different from the two previous ones. The sound is somewhere between No Blues, Alan Vega, Kendra Smith, and Gong. Kaos Karma is joined on this record by a few Japanese friends and musicians: Makoto Kawabata (Acid Mothers Temple), Ryoko Ono (Sax Ruins) holding back a bit, which is somewhat unusual but welcome in this context, and last but not least, the divine À Qui Avec Gabriel. Every noise is organized often enameled with groove, this blues has been meticulously built from the ground up. The tracks pour into a sonic and somewhat stormy ocean into which the listener will easily sink. The warm and raspy voice is reminiscent of the well-known ghosts of Beefheart or the wise ones of the Delta. But this is 21st century blues. At the same time old and new, naked, trippy, and orgasmic; a music outside of time, but very real that creates an incredible tension. Personnel: Fab Giberti - vocals, guitar; Pits Esb - studio work, bass. Guests include: Makoto Kawabata, Ryoko Ono, À Qui Avec Gabriel, Soil Vibrates, and Dom Corrieras.

PICCIONI, PIERO Camille 2000 2LP
2018 repress. Blind Faith Records present Piero Piccioni's soundtrack for the 1969 film Camille 2000. Rome, Aventino, one of the most amazing neighborhoods in the South area of the capital city. In an old garage, fully stored and preserved, tons of 1/4 inch tapes represent the monumental and brilliant work of one of the greatest composers of the twentieth century: the master Piero Piccioni. Caring for, listening to, and taking stock is his son Jason, Blind Faith Records have asked him to select three, out of many, chapters of the master's work, three scores to be rescued and brought to light in all their expressive and communicative power. Camille 2000 marks the first in the ongoing series. Never before published on vinyl, it was carefully transferred from the original masters and embellished with several unpublished alternative takes and fragments. The work of restoration was performed by Giuliano Radiciotti, while the material was mastered was by multi Grammy winner Brian Lucey. Jason on the music of Camille 2000: "I remember when I heard this music for the very first time in my father's studio in the early 90s. It was truly something revolutionary. It sounded so contemporary that it seems it was written in those days. Can't believe it was twenty years before then, instead!"

TYNDALL Sonnenlicht LP
LP version. Bureau B present a reissue of Tyndall's debut album, Sonnenlicht, originally released in 1980 on Sky Records. The two electronic sonic inventors Jürgen Krehan and Rudolf Langer founded Tyndall in the year 1980, naming their duo after a light scattering phenomenon in physics. Armed with an impressive array of instruments, devices, and home-made synthesizers, they created free and easy electronic music in the style of the Berlin School (Berliner Schule), much to the liking of the legendary Sky Records who released their debut album. The Tyndall effect becomes visible, when light beams are deflected by microscopic particles in suspension. This explains the patterns of light we see when the sun shines through mist or fog for example. The very name of Tyndall evokes a bigger picture -- in the same way as celestial light was a common feature of canvasses in Romanticism and the Renaissance: a dramatic symbol for the overwhelming beauty of nature. Musically speaking, the album fits seamlessly into the Sky Records canon of the period. It nicely illustrates how synth pop sounded in those days: luxuriant indulgence in synthetic sounds, arpeggios, bass sequences, carefree melodies, accompanied and powered by synth escapades and a computer beat. Tyndall owned the very first CR-78 drum computer in Germany, provided by the manufacturer Roland before the official street date when they heard it was to be used on an LP recording. Today the CR-78 is regarded as a drum computer classic. The duo also deployed a formidable range of analog instruments: several semi-modular Roland System synthesizers, a Hohner String Melody String Machine, and electric pianos. This list also formed the basis of their live arsenal for the many concerts they played. Sonnenlicht reflects their cheerful, nonchalant journey into new territory. Sonic explorations and sweet melodies spread out over octave basses, delays, and arpeggio patterns. The musicians were not afraid to add layers of noise or effects -- albeit not quite to the same extent as they would on their next album, 1981's Traumland (BB 287CD/LP).

TYNDALL Traumland LP
LP version. Bureau B present a reissue of Tyndall's second album Traumland, originally released in 1981 on Sky Records. The electronic sonic inventors Tyndall pulled out all the stops for their second album. Armed with an impressive array of analog synthesizers, they unleashed the full force of their experimentalist ambitions, weaving synth pop, repetitive bass patterns, laminar sounds, and carefree melodies into a unique amalgam of the Düsseldorf and Berlin Schools. Traumland was released a year after their debut effort Sonnenlicht (BB 286CD/LP). As the title ("Dreamland") suggests, Jürgen Krehan and Rudolf Langer left the earthly realm behind to draw the listener into an almost surreal dream of cheerfully fluting miniatures, as alien as they are imaginative. Traumland is far more experimental than its predecessor, at times even recalling early works of Düsseldorf's synthesizer-pop exponents of the avant garde, Der Plan. Krehan and Langer shared a passion for creating their own electronic instruments, yet when it came to recording the second album, as on their debut, they supplemented the ones they had built with a considerable amount of purchased equipment. This growing arsenal now included several semi-modular Roland System synthesizers. Roland premiered the System 100 in 1975, acknowledged today as one of the very best sounding analog synthesizers, boasting the trademark Roland timbre. Aficionados tend to prefer the System 100 to its considerably more powerful successor the 100m on account of its warm, vibrant sound, and its excellent playing characteristics. The system was immensely popular with other bands in the electronic field such as Tangerine Dream and Depeche Mode. This massive analog synth armory can clearly be heard on Traumland. On many tracks, filtered basslines condense into a funky foundation of looping miniatures. Juicy drum sounds and strikingly hard synth sequences are coupled with saccharine organ and prancing flute sounds, countered by a noise generator or lost in a maelstrom of experimental echoes. This reissue marks the first CD issue of Traumland.

MADFILTH Madfilth LP
Cache Cache present a reissue of Madfilth, originally released in 1980. From the pumping heart of the Magnetic System comes the "dirtiest" Da-Da-dancefloor anti-jams with this lost 1979 blueprint of Italian conceptual cosmic disco played by the cream of the Goblin studio band. Carving its own grubby niche as an early prototype of cosmic disco cum Italo space funk whilst simultaneously harboring Dada hat stand satire with a junkshop glam aesthetic, this ecological illogical poplitical crab cabaret clearly broke the mold before way before the jelly had set. Fans of "other" obtuse outernational agit-camp might find a fantasy fusion between France's Jean-Pierre Massiera and Sweden's enviromental marvel Kapten Zoom while trying to unravel the Madfilth tangle. Originally drip fed out of Cesare Andrea Bixio's Cinevox stable as one of a tight grip of non-soundtrack LPs, made to test the label's commercial potential, Madfilth would follow the band Goblin -- and their non-cinematic Roller (1976) -- as well as the eponymous long player by The Motowns (1971) in what was perhaps the last-ditch attempt at custom built popsploitation, combining the skills of overqualified composers with undercooked conceptual mind farts. This micro-brewed oddity finally quenches the acquired taste of a new breed of shambolic psychotropic guzzlers proving that 1979 was obviously good year for fool's gold. It is beneath the flamboyant rhythm rants and vari-speed osric slop of alt-comedic sarcy-satirist Alberto Macaro (a genetic beneficiary of a vaudevillian comic bloodline) that the Magnetic System maestros Franco Bixio and Vince Tempera act as the sonic driving force behind this unmarked treasure trove of eight-musical diamanté discoids. It will also come as little surprise that Cinevox/Dario Argento favorites Goblin were not too far away with the bass player Fabio Pignatelli alongside sports rock drummer Agostino Marangolo joining in. Madfilth's inclusion of Goblin synth maverick Maurizio Guarini and the band's mid-period guitarist Carlo Penessi (founder of the band Etna) pinpoints the jobbing Goblin session group during the time they recorded the soundtracks for the films Buio Amiga (1979) and Squadra Antigagsters (1979). This lesser celebrated late '70s era also witnessed the mutating Goblin rhythm section providing discoid backbeats for records such as Giorgio Farina's Discocross LP (1978), Simonetti's own Capricorn alter-ego, and the homoerotic nightclub spin-off Easy Going, all of which, alongside Madfilth, provide a strong mutual stylistic support system for their claim to cosmic discos deep red bloodline.

SANKARE, HAMA Ballebe - Calling All Africans LP
LP version. Alpha Ousmane "Hama" Sankaré (aka Pedro) is a legend. He has anchored the bands of many great artists of Mali: Ali Farka Toure, Afel Bocoum, le Troupe Regionale de Niafunké, l'Orchestre de Gao, Songhoy Allstars, and Mamadou Kelly's BanKaiNa, and he can be heard on many of the seminal recordings of Mali's music. He is the master of contemporary calabash percussion and defined it's the playing style. He has toured the world. Hama's influence is unchallenged as composer, arranger, and instrumentalist. Unbelievably, Ballébé - Calling All Africans is the first album in his own name! A musical adventurer, Hama explores sounds and is constantly expanding his repertoire. His knowledge of tradition reaches deeply into the past as he looks into the future for inspiration. For this album, Hama sought a variety of sounds. He asked Grammy-winning guitarist Cindy Cashdollar, whom he met in Woodstock New York in 2016, to bring her distinctive slide guitars to some of the tunes. He also asked the young singer Sekou Touré to join him. Oumar Konaté brought his guitar virtuoso skills and Sekou Bah anchors the tracks on bass. Also joining in were Mahalmadane Traoré on drums and Brehima "Yoro" Cissé and Bouba Cissao on traditional stringed instruments. To explore contemporary electronic sounds, Hama asked David Harrow in Los Angeles to mix two of the songs, pushing genre boundaries. Hama looked for loops and effects in the mix to reflect his diverse influences, while always remaining centered in Niafunke desert blues, his home in the Niger River Delta of Mali. A tour de force by Malian master musician Hama Sankaré. CD version includes two tracks: an instrumental of "Middo Wara" and a radio edit of "Haira Alhawa".

King Ov Hell (Gorgoroth, Sahg, God Seed) and Kvitrafn (aka Einar Selvik of Wardruna, Skuggsjá, Gorgoroth) teamed up and formed Jotunspor ("tracks/traces of giants"). Musically, Gleipnirs Smeder binds grim and primitive black metal together with elements of noisy dark-ambient, while the concept of Jotunspor is strongly founded in the Old Norse cults and beliefs. "Glepnirs Smeder", or the The Forgers of Gleipnir, explores some of the incidents surrounding the creation of the world and Ragnarok, the ultimate doom/transformation. The chain Gleipnir, its forgers from the depths of Svartalvheim and Fenris -- the chained jotun-wolf are some of the most important themes on the album, on which the lyrics are sung in Norwegian and Old Norse tongue. DE BABALON, CHRISTOPH If You're Into It, I'm Out of It 2LP
The first ever vinyl reissue of Christoph De Babalon's If You're Into It, I'm Out of It, originally released in 1997. Christoph De Babalon was a key member of Germany's mutant splinter cells who fused UK rave music with more experimental, Teutonic techno, ambient, and hardedge politics to brutal effect during the mid-late '90s. 21 years later, this music has patently withstood the test of time, distinguished by a haunting atmospheric pallor and ruff-neck way with jungle that'll makes you feel just as clammy and psychotic as when you first heard it (most likely on a trip to Berlin or via Christoph Fringeli's invaluable C8 database). If You're Into It, I'm Out Of It distills a feeling of that era, as the utopian outlook of rave's early years had evidently given way to something much darker, more maudlin, perhaps symptomatic of ennui with dance music's hyper-commercial land grab, or even a pre-echo of pre millennial tension. If You're Into It, I'm Out Of It therefore feels torn between extreme states. On one hand it goes harder than the rest in killer rave moves such as the hardcore rattler "Dead (Too)", the epic "amen" and drone blow-out "My Confession", or his cutthroat beast "Water". But on the other, he goes darker, more haunting than the rest of his field with remarkable cuts such as the 15 minutes of billowing dark ambience that open the LP in "Opium", or with the sublime, Gas-like suspension system of "Brilliance", and the funereal, bombed-out bliss of "High Life (Theme)". With his debut album proper, De Babalon effectively plotted out terrain that bridged DJ Scud's rugged jungle breakcore with soundscaping more commonly associated to Thomas Köner or Deathprod, and in the process set the ground for myriad contemporary producers and sounds ranging from Raime and Blackest Ever Black to Demdike Stare, Pessimisst, and beyond. If You're Into It, I'm Out Of It was, and still is, a deadly statement of intent, whose rhetoric and aesthetic still strongly resonate with subcultural concerns in 2018. Classic. RIYL: Aphex Twin, Gas, The Caretaker, Reinforced, DJ Scud, Deathprod, Porter Ricks. Remastered by Rashad Becker. Edition of 700.

OHIO PLAYERS Angel LP
2016 reissue, housed in a gatefold sleeve on 180 gram white vinyl. Originally released in 1977. "There are three elements that can always be found on the Ohio Players' albums that were released during their heyday: funky tracks, hyped ballads and sexually suggestive album covers. This LP is no different, featuring three releases in Body Vibes, O-H-I-O and Merry Go Round. The first and last peaked at 19 and 77 respectively on the Billboard R&B charts. The second of the three is an up-tempo cut, in which the song's title is the only lyric; it is repeated in a whispery chant in the verse and the word itself is sung throughout the chorus. This formula proved successful as the single cracked the Top Ten at number nine inside of 18 weeks. It was also the last Top Ten single for the Dayton, Ohio funk aggregate. 'Angel,' the title track, and 'Can You Still Love Me' were not released, but are classic Ohio Players compositions. 'Angel' is a mid-tempo number honed with dancing rhythms and piercing horns that Leroy 'Sugarfoot' Bonner shrouds with his trademark baritone, complemented by superb background vocals. Bonner maintains that same vocal appeal on 'Can You Still Love Me,' leaving room for falsetto-flavored background vocals that are creatively arranged." --Craig Lytle, All Music

OHIO PLAYERS Skin Tight LP
2016 reissue, housed in a gatefold sleeve on 180 gram brown vinyl. Originally released in 1974. "Skin Tight was a major turning point for the Ohio Players, who had enjoyed several hits on black radio (including 'Pain,' 'Funky Worm,' 'Varee Is Love,' and 'I Wanna Hear From You') but hadn't been huge. Switching from Westbound to Mercury, the Dayton funksters became exactly that -- huge -- and went from enjoying a cult following to being one of the most celebrated funk bands of the 1970s. With Skin Tight, the band's erotic album covers went from employing bizarre S&M/bondage imagery to being more Playboy-ish, and its music became less abstract (but remained quite risk-taking and unpredictable). The title song and 'Jive Turkey' are down and dirty funk classics, and the jazz-influenced 'Heaven Must Be Like This' illustrates the fact that the Players could also be captivatingly romantic." --Alex Henderson, All Music

BUTTERFLY CHILD Onomatopoeia CD
Dell'Orso Records present a reissue of Butterfly Child's debut Onomatopoeia, originally released in 1993. In the early summer of 1993, Rough Trade released Onomatopoeia, the first album by Belfast native Joe Cassidy's Butterfly Child. Having first come to the public's attention after a wave of press resulting from two EPs released on dream pop legends' A.R. Kane's H.ark! label, an incendiary first BBC John Peel Session, and a UK tour supporting The Sundays, Cassidy recorded Onomatopoeia in a couple of weeks with the help of longtime friend and collaborator Gary McKendry of the now infamous Papa Sprain. Gleefully using a shoestring budget that felt like a one-million dollar advance, Cassidy and McKendry bought an 8-track tape machine, a cheap drum machine, an even cheaper reverb unit, a secondhand synthesizer, and a bunch of tea. They then proceeded into the album's recording sessions with a classic Irish carefree attitude and confidence. As Cassidy recalled: "I always felt that no matter how little audio equipment or musical instruments we had back then, that it was always possible to make something really special, despite our limitations. In fact, having extreme limitations often helped push us to get the most out of the solitary synth or the one bad drum machine with silly tom sounds that we had at our disposal. I love that the song 'Our Lady Mississipp', for example, is like the nursery school jazz version on the album, and then by the time we did the second Peel Session six months later, I had Pendle on guitar, James Harris on bass, and a fantastic drummer (Richie Thomas of Dif Juz, Moose, The Jesus And Mary Chain, This Mortal Coil), finally realizing what the adult version of that song could sound like." Part of Onomatopoeia's charm that still holds true almost 25 years later is its child-like, timeless quality -- it sounds nothing like anything of its time. It is a unique and beautiful collection of "almost songs" that flourish as a whole body of work that beg the listener to delve deeper, to get lost in the aether of its lyrics, and to let it quietly roar all over you.

The B side's "Put Your Hands On The Car (And Get Ready To Die)" brings back memories of a long gone past with nods to Balearic pop, EBM, and the Soundtrack work of Stewart Copeland, James Horner, and Jan Hammer.

RUSTICHELLI, CARLO L'armata Brancaleone CD
Carlo Rustichelli (Carpi, December 24, 1916 - Rome, November 13, 2004) was the author of hundreds of film soundtracks and will go down in history for his famous friendship with director Pietro Germi and for the "Brancaleone March", a true iconic hymn like the James Bond theme by Monty Norman or "The Raiders March" by John Williams from Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). This unforgettable choir motif is introduced by "Branca Branca Branca Leon Leon Leon" and a whistle and is the heart of the background music, which the author reprises with orchestral versions that are sometimes comical and sometimes dramatic -- all under the direction of Bruno Nicolai. Two of the other supporting scores are "Pirulè" the psalm theme of the pilgrims, and "Cuccuruccù" sung by a female voice accompanied by the mandola. L'armata Brancaleone was released in 1966. It won three Silver Ribbons and was presented in competition at the 19th Cannes Film Festival. CD version includes the mono master tapes from the original recording session; Digitmovies have included the audio editing on the first fifteen tracks, which the label prepared with Maestro Rustichelli for the CD's first release in 1995, followed by film versions, alternate takes, and the singles released in 1966 on the single Parade PRC 5002. The CD ends with the rare take of the march introduced by the voice of Vittorio Gassman. CD version comes in an edition of 300.

RUSTICHELLI, CARLO Brancaleone Alle Crociate CD
For the sequel to 1966's L'armata Brancaleone ("For Love and Gold") (CDDM 289CD, LPDM 008LP), Carlo Rustichelli (December 24, 1916, Carpi - 13 November 2004, Rome) resumes his famous "March of Brancaleone" and "Pirulè" ("the pilgrim theme"), this time entrusting Gianfranco Plenizio to conduct the orchestra. Maestro Rustichelli created a new score which is romantic and veiled with sadness for Felicilla, the witch (Stefania Sandrelli) who enters Brancaleone's heart. This time Brancaleone gets caught up in the Crusades and the score alternates dramatic with haunting passages that would fit perfectly in a horror film. This is a well-deserved musical recovery for the trio Monicelli, Rustichelli, Gassman, who created a masterpiece for Italian cinema. Vittorio Gassman won "Best Actor" at the San Sebastian Festival in 1971 for this film. Brancaleone Alle Crociate was released in 1970. CD version includes the stereo master tapes of the original recording session. Digitmovies have includes the audio editing on the first twenty tracks which the label prepared with Maestro Rustichelli for the CD's first release in 1995, followed by film versions, alternate takes, and the singles released in 1970 on RCA Records. ODEON Galaxies LP
Galaxies is the debut album from Odeon, the union of two couple of Roman brothers -- Luciano and Valerio, Giacomo and Michele -- who are not easily defined. Take the mellow melodies of Talk Talk and the celestial guitar riffs of Cocteau Twins bound together with some heavy Goblin-inspired basslines and you'll be close to picturing Odeon's signature sound. Drawing from '70s Italian B-movie soundtracks, psychedelic rock, and early '80s new wave, and combining analog synths, dreamy guitars, melancholy vocoder, and drum machine-driven percussion, Odeon put together a debut album that sounds fresh and classic at the same time. Ethereal and mesmerizing, Galaxies is the perfect soundtrack for a sonic journey through dying stars and forbidden planets. 180 gram vinyl; Gatefold sleeve.

MYTHIC SUNSHIP Ouroboros LP
2018 repress, purple vinyl. Debut album from Copenhagen quartet, Mythic Sunship . The destination is transcendence alright, but the vehicle, ultimately, is assembled from decades of rock - where ferocious drum-pounding and thick, geezery basslines adds fuel to an endless pyre of blazed-out dual fuzz guitar action. This stuff is wild. Spiritually, the band seems connected to present day So-Cal psych-rock, but listening to Ouroboros, also reveals the band's strong ties to the Copenhagen underground scene: members of the band brushing elbows with the avant-garde noise of the record label Posh Isolation as well as the Mayhem venue. There's plenty of blissed-out riff-worshipping here, but there's also something slightly unsettling in the band's skyward travels - perhaps a longing for spiritual redemption. Maybe the road to satori isn't necessarily pretty after all. File next to: Amon Düül II, Earthless, Guru Guru, Travellin' Flower Band .

MYTHIC SUNSHIP Upheaval CD
On their third album, Upheaval, Mythic Sunship take their deepest dive yet. Their own brand of wobbly boogie doom reaches new dimension of pure Sabbath-like proportions. Yet there's also a new state of re-fined inner space. Mythic Sunship don't only know how to let it rip and let loose -- they are also masters of knowing when to turn down and zone out. The restless, manic beat of Frederik Denning rides on a dense blanket of fuzz from Rasmus Cleve's bass. This rhythm section flows the ground for epic stoner sagas. Leaving ample space for the fuzzy, shimmering, and downright crushing dual guitar excursions of Emil Thorenfeldt and Kasper Stougaard. Upheaval is the apex of the band's journey so far. Mythic Sunship sounds mature and unified like never before on this set, but also maintaining their raw searching edge. It's a culmination and refinement of their idea: the ethos of free jazz in a doom setting.

SORENSEN, NICKLAS Solo 2 CD
Nicklas Sørensen's second solo effort away from his main stint as guitar player in Papir is a more placid, blissful listen than his first solo venture from 2016 (EPR 029CD/LP). On this set Nicklas digs deep into his love for vintage new age music, Brazilian bossa nova, and the electronic side of kosmische, while still paying homage to the guitar heroes that have shaped his playing throughout the years, such as Vini Reilly, Manuel Göttsching, and Michael Rother. Produced in collaboration with Causa Sui and El Paraiso in-house maestro Jonas Munk in his Odense studio, the pair has conjured a set of tracks that are blistering and euphoric, yet relaxed and solemn. Sørensen's unique guitar sound, in combination with warm blankets of analog synths, vibrating filters, and the occasional drum machine, paints colorful soundscapes that mediate the soul with both the ethos of new age and hints of classical minimalism and modern composition. Experimentation is at the heart of Sørensen's modus operandi, but he never forgets to keep his melodic guitar leads central to the proceedings. The B side is unashamedly immersive -- with Munk wrapping bubbly analog synths sequences around Sørensen's guitar loop patterns and panoramic slide guitars. The album ends on Sørensen's most inward-traveling note yet, bathing expressive guitar lines in a tender ocean of processing and reverb. Get that incense burning!

ASSIS BRASIL, VICTOR Esperanto / Toca Antonio Carlos Jobim CD
Far Out Recordings present a second album from Victor Assis Brasil from the treasure trove of the Quartin Records catalog, Esperanto, originally released in 1976. Over the course of the 1960s, Roberto Quartin released more than 20 albums in Brazil on his label Forma. Selling the rights of Forma to Polygram in 1969, Quartin struck out for pastures new at the dawn of the 1970s with the launch of his self-titled label. Significant works and high-water marks for Brazilian music overall followed in that decade's first year. These singular gems in Brazilian music, difficult to categorize, yet compellingly beautiful, have for too long gone unheard. Gifted his first saxophone by his aunt at the age of fourteen, only four years later the determined young musician, Victor Assis Brasil recorded his debut album, with a second to follow only a year later. The prodigious young carioca was subsequently granted a place to study at Berklee College of Music, where he played alongside the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, Chick Corea, and Ron Carter. It was also during this period he recorded Esperanto and Toca Antonio Carlos Jobim with Roberto Quartin, upon returning to Brazil in the summer of 1970. Recorded in the same sessions as the Toca Antonio Carlos Jobim album, Esperanto consists of five deep jazz cuts: original compositions except for a heavy-swinging Latin-jazz cover of Jimmy Heath's "Ginger Bread Boy", alongside more moments of wild frenetic jazz, like "Quarenta Graus A Sombra", amongst more melancholic, but no less captivating compositions like "Marilia" and "Ao Amigo Quartin". Esperanto's influences span both American continents, finding a meeting point for Latin jazz and North American post-bop, with Roberto Quartin's perfectionist approach to sound elevating the already incandescent music to divine new heights. The band consists of some mercurial greats of Brazilian music: Dom Salvador (bass), Edison Machado (drums), Helio Delmiro (guitar), and Edson Lobo (Bass). Victor Assis Brasil passed away aged just thirty-five, due to a rare circulatory disease, but by this point his status was already cemented as one of the most talented musicians in Brazil's history. This double-CD is contains both Esperanto and Toca Antonio Carlos Jobim (previously only made available by Far Out Recordings on vinyl), as well as two bonus tracks: previously unreleased alternative versions of "Marilia" and "Ao Amigo Quartin".

FAIR, DAVID Ballets (Dance Like This) 3LP
Subtitled Dance Like This, Ballets retrieves the long-lost solo debut by David Fair (half of the original Half Japanese). Made up of six side-long loops, the record is hypnotic and beautiful. Rather than blather on further, Feeding Tube Records decided to do a short interview with the artist himself. Here 'tis:Feeding Tube Records: When did you get the idea for this album?David Fair: I don't remember what year it was, but I think it was after Charmed Life (1988) was recorded but before it came out. It might have been between Half Gentlemen / Not Beasts (1980) and Loud (1981). Jad had done a little solo project called Zombies of Mora Tau (1982). The group of ballets was going to be my first solo project. It was going to be released on the 50,000,000,000,000,000 Watts label, but the label folded up before the release date.FTR: When and where was it recorded?DF: It was recorded in a studio that Jad and I had set up in Uniontown, Maryland. We had two 4-track reel-to-reel tape recorders. Maybe it was one 4-track and one 2-track. I don't remember for sure. This was a lifetime ago, at the end of the 1970s or the beginning of the 1980s. We stapled egg cartons to the walls and ceiling which sucked the sound right out of the air. Jad engineered the recordings and I made the noises and decided what to do with them.FTR: What instruments were used?DF: The sounds were made by recording a short passage of sound on a loop of tape and then adding reverb and echo effects. The track would be played just like that on one track. The next track would be the same loop but at a slower speed. More tape was added to the loop and the tape was sent down a long hallway and into another room. That long tape at regular speed was track three, and a slowed down version was track four. The finished songs would have elements that would go in and out of sync with each other. Most of them were gentle soft pieces that made me think of ballerinas, so soon I realized that I was making ballets. The instruments were whatever was in the room that would make a small yet pretty musical phrase. I used a marimba, a snare drum, a spinning quarter, rolling marbles, torn paper and a guitar.FTR: Were there dances created for the pieces?DF: There never were actually dancers performing them anywhere but in my head. My favorite teacher in college was one that I had for filmmaking and silk-screening classes. Her main job there was teaching dance. I had in mind that as soon as the records came out I would send them to her and my hope was that she would make them into real dances. I loved the idea of dancers in their frilly tutus gliding around the stage to these songs. Originally each piece was about 30 minutes long, but they have been cut back now to ensure the highest quality of reproduction. I would love to have professional dance troupes or amateur dancers or little school children, or anyone at all who might be inspired, move around to these sounds. I would love it if people would make their own videos dancing around in costumes. I would also love it if people didn't feel like filming them, but maybe they would turn the lights down low in their parent's basements and play these songs at teen parties. Or maybe there is someone who puts these songs on and dances alone in front of a mirror while everyone else in the house is asleep.FTR: You sent Phil Milstein some of these loops to use with Uzi?DF: I had forgotten that, but I believe it to be true. Over the years I have sent things to Phil and he has sent things to me. Sometimes the only purpose is sharing something that you think a friend might like to hear. But in this case, it might well have been for him to use any way he could in his band. At the time that these songs were recorded, I had never heard anything else like them. Nowadays anyone who understands the half-witted GarageBand could probably make similar songs in an afternoon. At the time that they were made they seemed like the sort of songs that might cause a person to close their eyes and imagine things. That would be a wonderful use for them, but if dancers were actually performing them, then all the listener would have to do is watch. There would be no thinking involved. Just look and listen and be carried away.

GARY WAR Gaz Forth LP
"For the last while, Greg Dalton (aka Gary War) has been back in Massachusetts, after spending years working on his music down in twin Isles of Kiwi. Since returning he has popped up in the amazing psych duo, Dalthom (along with Sunburned's Rob Thomas), and even played with the legendary Bobb Trimble on a live Burger cassette, but Gaz Forth is the first new Gary War LP in over five years. Recorded with long-time collaborator, Daniel Rineer, as well as Robert Cathart III (Pigeons), Jeremy Pisani (Red Favorite), Kris Thompson (Abunai, Trimble), Clementine Nixon (Purple Pilgrims) and John Moloney (Sunburned), Gaz Forth hearkens back to some of the left-field pop amalgamations Mr. War had a hand in when he worked with Ariel Pink back in the early Oughts. Synths ripple at the edge of everything like space pistols fired into the face of Giorgio Moroder, there's the kind of mellotron/harmony-vocal blend one associates with Deram-era Moodies, the guitars blast out bubble-psych-readymades like runaway teenagers with scrips for Ketamine, and a bunch of the tunes remind me of what Golden Earring might sound like if heard from a great distance while riding one of those Whirling Teacup thingamabobs at full carny speed. There's much less of a hypnagogic synth-pop approximation on Gaz than has been noted on earlier Gary War records, but the futurist space squeedle remains part of his bad-ass and trademarked sound. Certainly the presence of living (rather than robotic) drummers gives Gaz a very different pulse. As zoned as the music gets at times, there's no mistaking its rockist base, so you start thinking of its brunt in terms of subliminal glam and spacer types rather than off-gas from sad Midwesterners. Gaz is far and away the finest slab yet released by Gary War. High bore post-garage freakery of the largest available gauge. Pick up your shotgun and walk." --Byron Coley, 2017 Edition of 300.

MENTAL BEND One Step CD
Mental Bend captures the magic of the moment when sundown leads to the adventures of night in their dreamy soundtracks. If you close your eyes, you can see blurry pictures passing in slow motion, accompanied by their atmospheric songs. One Step is the Berlin-based indietronica duo's visually vivid debut album, released on Fenou. Sissip (vocals, synth, bass) and Hendrik Havekost (beats, production) know how to trust their instincts, crafting their hypnotic signature sound, somewhere in between electronica, ambient, and dream pop. Before founding the band in 2013, the two were already shaping their skills in all kinds of different formations and styles of music. As soon as they got together, they had a viral mini hit with their song "Take My Hand". The band's first long-player One Step is all about important experiences and decisions, small as well as big steps, all a part of making progress. In the past year while touring in Tokyo, Sissip and Havekost met Dapayk & Padberg, alias of Eva Padberg and Mo's Ferry co-founder Niklas Worgt, who were immediately impacted by Mental Bend's individual sound. Inspired by artists like Portishead, Tricky, Massive Attack, Radiohead, and The XX, Mental Bend invent their very own soundscapes. Spheric loops, trippy downtempo beats, and indulging chords make for massive walls of sound, interweaved by fragile and melancholic vocals from another world. Sometimes creepy and dark, sometimes ethereal and surreal. It all results into an almost impossible to grasp mix of organic and electronic elements, mirrored by the band's name; Mental Bend aren't shy of making sudden turns in their tracks, bending their ideas into unpredictable creative sculptures and walk on unexpected paths, always challenging their listeners to really listen. One Step is their creation of a world of sound for the imaginary citizens of Metropolis. A sound matured and perfected on two tours through Germany, as well as at shows at the Berlin Berghain-Kantine, the C/O Pop Festival and the renowned Jetztmusik Festival in Mannheim. The influence on One Step doesn't stop in Berlin and Tokyo. The foundation is actually laid in New York City, where the duo wrote the title track in 2015. This inspirational atmosphere of the title track comes up elsewhere, like the restless "Walking", the claustrophobic "Invisible", the hypnotic love song "Madly In Love", or the contemplative pop song "Counting Stars".

ORKESTA MENDOZA Vamos A Guarachar LP
Repressed; LP version. 2016 release. Born in Nogales, AZ, raised in Nogales, Mexico, multi-instrumentalist and band-leader Sergio Mendoza grew up listening to the Mexican regional styles jostling for headspace in a young, music-mad mind -- cumbia mainly, but mambo, rancheras, and mariachi too. The border is always a fierce arena of exchange, both commercial and cultural, and so there was American music too. At one point "rock and roll, the classics," as Mendoza himself deadpans, seemed to win out and he stopped playing those "Latin styles" for a good decade and a half. The return to those sounds was a strong one in 2012's Mambo Mexicano!, co-produced by Mendoza and Joey Burns of Calexico -- a band for which Mendoza has become an increasingly integral touring and recording member. While that record had a studied air, tentative in parts (as befits the renewal of an old love affair), ¡Vamos A Guarachar! is another beast entirely: by turns raucous ("Cumbia Volcadora," featuring Mexican electronic pioneer Camilo Lara), tender ("Misterio," surely Salvador Duran's finest moment with the band so far), and plain serious fun, as in "Contra La Marea" and "Mapache," it also bears a robust electronic edge, a keen pop sensibility, and all the hallmarks of Mendoza's love of '60s rock, with the closing track, "Shadows of the Mind," sure to be included if anyone decides to update the Nuggets collection for the 21st century. This is roundabout way of saying that it appears to have everything, but never too much of anything. Focused, fierce, and beautifully executed by a superbly drilled set of musicians, it is a work that fully matches the band's explosive live performances. Sergio Mendoza: vocals, keyboards, guitars, drums, percussion, programming, horns; Salvador Duran: lead vocals on "Cumbia Volcadora," "Misterio," and "Cumbia Amor De Lejos"; Sean Rogers: bass, lead vocals on "Shadows of the Mind"; Marco Rosano: sax, clarinet, trombone, keyboards, guitar; Raul Marques: backing vocals; Joe Novelli: lap steel.

DELL'ORSO, EDDA Sings Ennio Morricone LP
Edda Dell'Orso (born Edda Sabatini, February 16, 1935) is a legendary Italian singer who has long been the vocalist of choice for the maestro Ennio Morricone. She has provided vocals, often wordless singing, to countless Morricone scores beginning in the mid-1960s and most famously for the immortal score to Il Buono, Il Brutto, Il Cattivo (The Good, The Bad And The Ugly, 1966). This collection compiles, for the first time in one place, many of her finest performances for Morricone, including such legendary films as C'era Una Volta Il West (Once Upon A Time In The West, 1968), Cosa Avete Fatto A Solange? (What Have You Done To Solange?, 1972), and the aforementioned The Good, The Bad And The Ugly. Goodfellas present this one-of-a-kind collection that highlights the unique talents of Edda Dell'Orso with her longtime collaborator, Ennio Morricone. The maestro has long been acclaimed for his brilliant use of vocals in his scores and none of that would have been possible without the work of the Dell'Orso, who has been behind the scenes of his finest work for five decades. Also features performances for the TV film Orient Express, La Donna Invisibile (1969), Secret Of The Sahara (1988), Gott Mit Uns (1970), Scusi Facciamo L'amore (1969), L'uomo Proiettile (1995), and Veruschka (1971).

HAWGOOD + GIULIO ALDINUCCI, IAN Consequence Shadows CD
Consequence Shadows marks the first collaboration between Ian Hawgood and Giulio Aldinucci after years of development. Consequence Shadows was initially termed "snow sketches" as they shared files back and forth. This working name for each piece (each noted as parts one to five in their correspondence) has lent heavily to the overall feel, highlighting the imbued sense of fragility in the subtle melodies as they evolve through the field-recorded white noise frequencies throughout. Upon diving into these depths, you'll discover a world beyond; a world of calm surface but an unknown entity below. Whilst Consequence Shadows will no doubt be (rightly) marked as an ambient work, the pieces stretch genre definitions as they converse with submerged beats, freckled frequencies, guitar echoes, direct vocal studies, and sustained piano chords, among many other directions. The closing piece is the nearly twenty minute beautifully epic reworking of "Other Ashes" by Belgian artist Stijn Hüwels.

HAWGOOD + DANNY NORBURY, IAN Faintly Recollected CD
The first collaborative release by Ian Hawgood and Danny Norbury. Some might be very surprised that this is their first release as they've been friends and long-time collaborators for many years. Faintly Recollected is an original single long track (33 minutes) edited by Stefano Guzzetti thereafter. Danny played cello and Ian played and processed Hokema Sansula kalimba ambient tones as well as looping and editing on the recordings onto reels. The resulting album is minimal but so elegant. The graceful cello by Danny is epic as it slowly opens up the deep darkness as reflected through the perfectly matching imagery of the cover photo by Eirik Holmøyvik. This is the music for everyone who wants to enjoy the quietness and calm of hidden moments.

Guede Remixes is a remix compilation of DJ Hell taken from his fifth studio album Zukunftsmusik (GIGOLO 302CD/LP/X-LP, 2017). The release features a remix by Joyce Muniz and one by Paul Nazca. "Guede"'s soundscape is acidic yet minimal, with its distorted vocals and raucous instrumentation lending the track an eerie and at times ethereal vibe. Each artist brings a uniquely different perspective on the sound of the original cut, whilst never completely abandoning the track's core identity. Paul Nazca infuses it with trance, Joyce Muniz keeps the acid and adds the deep.

"They are profoundly mysterious: the traditional, ritual laryngeal chants of the Central Asian land of Tuva. For with their unique song technique, the singers from the steppe develop an enthralling sound cosmos rich in undertones and overtones. Something that is no longer a mystery, however, is the world-wide success of the Tuvan quartet Huun-Huur-Tu, now an established name in international world music, thanks to their modern presentation of traditional laryngeal singing. The ensemble receives now a bigger acceptance with a new young audience which brings a lot of demands for vinyl. KNOWLEDGE Hail Dread CD
Kingston Sounds present a reissue of Knowledge's debut album Hail Dread, originally released in 1978. The group Knowledge and Tapper Zukie's stories are intertwined through their location in the Rema area of Kingston. Tapper Zukie took the band under his wing and helped get this classic album Hail Dread a worldwide release back in 1979. When it first hit the record shelves, Knowledge's lineup included Anthony Doyley, Delroy Folding, Earl MacFarlane, Mike Smith, Michael Samuels, and later Paul Freeman. The group's debut release was Make Faith (1978) with Tapper Zukie introducing the band as his protégés, beginning a winning formula. The band released many of their early singles on Tapper's Stars imprint, and they were produced by Tapper himself. This culminated in Tapper getting the band a deal with a major label A&M making Knowledge the first reggae band to be signed to the label. A&M were keen to work with Tapper as an artist and producer. They even motioned Tapper to be backed by one of their other signed bands, The Police, for a UK tour. Tapper thought that being backed by a band named after such an establishment would not be a wise idea and declined the offer. But the connection did lead up to one of Jamaica's great vocal groups getting their debut album, again produced by Tapper Zukie and released on this major label. Sadly the relationship was short lived and the album Hail Dread would be their only release on A&M. Hail Dread is one of roots reggae's classic '70s releases and shows the group and their producer at the height of their powers. Proof is in the listening. CD version includes four bonus tracks.

TIETCHENS, ASMUS Dammerattacke CD
"Asmus Tietchens is a sound artist and composer from Hamburg, Germany. He got interested in musique concrete by listening to a German radio programme when he was 10 years old. In 1965, at the age of 18, Asmus started experimenting with tape loops and turned them into musical collages. Soon, the use of synthesizers was added. In 1980 his debut album Nachtstücke was released, produced by Peter Baumann of Tangerine Dream. This was soon followed by a series of albums of electronic pop music for the Sky label, home of many Krautrock bands. Tietchens often uses special source materials for his compositions such as water (Seuchengebiete), human voices ('Von Mund zu Mund'), paper ('Papier Ist Geduldig'). He is associated with the Industrial music scene through his collaborations and releases on labels such as United Dairies, Esplendor Geometrico or Dom Records. Tietchens never studied composition, he has no academic background, everything he does is self-taught or learning by doing. Nevertheless, he was professor for sound design in Hamburg in recent years. The album Dämmerattacke was originally released on Dutch Korm Plastics label in 1997 as a limited edition vinyl LP only. It was later reissued as a double-CD with Eisgang. For this latest edition, we have added another bonus track making the CD 20 minutes longer than the LP."

BURIAL HEX Assumption/Ascension With Pentecost CD
"Clayton Ruby from Wisconsin, USA, had his first releases as Burial Hex in 2007, although he started making music three years prior to that. His sound can be described as dark ambient or industrial. Burial Hex says he performs 'horror electronics to prepare for the final mystery in the twilight of the Kali Yuga,' which incorporate influences ranging from Tangerine Dream to power electronics. He has collaborated with artists such as Zola Jesus, Iron Fist Of The Sun, Kinit Her, Sylvester Anfang II, Skin Graft, Crown Of Bone, Stor, Mumber Toes, and Joshua Norton Cabal. Klanggalerie are proud to present a new album on CD that compiles two albums previously released in microscopic editions only. Assumption/Ascension was a cassette tape (in an edition of 73 copies) put out by Angst Records in 2016. On this powerful offering, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Clay Ruby and cellist Angela McJunkin gracefully weave through a shocking juxtaposition of kosmische neo-classical and power electronics. In an attempt to depict the mysteries of the 'Assumption' and 'Ascension', Burial Hex makes a harrowing musical journey that ultimately culminates in a peaceful resolution with a very uncharacteristic piece of monastic folk pastoral. Pentecost was another cassette released in 2016, this time on the Makrame Records label. Recorded live on the Vigil of Pentecost, 2016, this is what Clay says about it on Bandcamp: 'And I will show wonders in the heaven above, and signs on the earth beneath: blood and fire, and the vapor of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and manifest day of the Lord come.' Prepare for a dark ride!"

BOBUCK, CHARLES Egg Booty CD
"'Eggs are much like turds. With one big difference. Eggs have shells. The purpose of the shell is to protect the insides while it is being delivered to the world. The delivery of turds requires much less pomp and ceremony. These Bobuckian eggs do not have shells. They have shall and a bit of should. They pretend to be songs but have forgotten what the modern definition of that word is, concentrating only on what that definition could be. Could be. Should be. Could'a should'a. Bobuck's Egg Booty.' Over the past few months, former Residents composer Charles Bobuck has released several Tiny Tunes through his website, newsletter and as free giveaways for holidays. We are now happy to present you the second collection of these songs on CD. THIRD WORLD Live In Boston 1976 CD
Third World, live at Paul's Mall, Boston in 1976. Third World is one of Jamaica's most consistently popular crossover acts among international audiences. While they were reliable for authentic roots reggae, they usually preferred to mix in elements of R&B, funk, pop, and rock (and, later on, dancehall and rap). Purists would often confuse authenticity in terms of the band's commercial success. As regular visitors to the American and British charts throughout the 1980s, it could be assumed that maybe they knew exactly what they were doing. Klondike Records present an uncompromising Third World, energized by the release of their debut self-titled album (1976) and fresh from a European tour with Bob Marley and The Wailers. This is Third World captured live in 1976 at Paul's Mall, Boston, USA. Double LP version. Includes download code. Following up to three albums on Kompakt since 2011, the latest being Signs Under Test in 2015 (KOMP 119CD/KOM 321LP), Los Angeles based house and techno producer John Tejada returns to the Cologne-based imprint with his thirteenth full-length, Dead Start Program -- an eleven-track journey spanning a prismatic array of styles and patterns, from John's signature soulful techno tunes to the further mazy, hypnotic motifs of his trancey electro hybrids. Be it solo or through a host of multifaceted collaborations, Tejada keeps himself busy on all fronts in and off the club environment, be it by contributing the 44th number in Fabric's seminal mix series (FABRIC 087CD, 2001), playing drums for Detroit legend Daniel Bell (as DBX), testing the limits of acid with Tin Man or joining forces with the hilarious self-proclaimed "disinformationist" Reggie Watts as Wajatta. Since his beginnings and the drop of his debut 12", Waxing, released through his own label Palette Recordings in 1996, John has been carving out a lane of his own -- combining and assembling elements from all ends of his wide-spanning spectrum of reference in a way that allows a more direct transition from the realm of the mind to the circuits of the machine, as confirmed by the deliberately limited studio setup used in the making of the present album. Navigating across the lines, from the arrhythmic machine spook of the album's opener "Autoseek" via the straight-out thumping and jacking pulse of "Hypochondriac" and heavy-lidded breakbeat of "Sleep Spindle" onto the kosmische-infused vibrations of "Telemetry", vibrant slo-mo inertia of "Loss" and wistful club-ready winds of "Duty Cycle" and "Heal", John threads his way through genres and tempos with optimal chameleonic effect. Cloaked in a beautiful sleeve art courtesy of John's long-time friend Juan Mendez, aka Silent Servant -- another key contributor to the Los Angeles scene worldwide, based upon a picture by Mark Richards, Dead Start Program draws its title from the analog start up program used to boot an old CDC 6600 computer from a dead start and which metaphorically invites in John's own words to figure a "reboot from the challenges life throws at you".

TRAORE, BOUBACAR Dounia Tabolo CD
"Boubacar Traore carries within him all the beauty of African blues. A diamond among the jewels of Mandingo music, he shines with the dark glow of exceptional purity. Only the voice of 'Kar Kar' (a footballing nickname meaning 'The Dribbler' given him by his friends, who also love the beautiful game) can blend Niger and Mississippi river alluvia with such moving authenticity. His unique, inimitable, self-taught guitar technique owes a great deal to his kora influences, but its shades and phrasing also suggest the great black bluesmen of the deep South: Blind Willie McTell, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters and others. Back in the '60s when the euphoria of African independence reigned, the 20-year-old Boubacar Traore was Mali's Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley. He was the first to play Mandingo-based music on electric guitar, long before his junior, Ali Farka Touré. It is in the United States, in Lafayette Louisiana, that Boubacar Traore wished to record his third album for the label Lusafrica. The guitarist's intention was to change the coloration of his songs (old numbers like 'Dounia Tabolo' or 'Kanou', and new ones, 'Ben de Kadi', 'Mousso') while conserving their original character. So it is with musicians from the Southern States of the USA he had met on tour, Cedric Watson on violin and washboard, and Corey Harris on guitar, that he undertook the recording of his album Dounia Tabolo at the end of 2016. And when he told them he wanted to add a cello and female voice to the album, Cedric Watson suggested Leyla McCalla. This recording is a new milestone in the work of this extraordinary but modest artist. From blues to folk and Cajun to Zydeco music, his new traveling companions have provided a touch of folly and swing (Cedric Watson), blues depth (Corey Harris) and discreet elegance (Leyla McCalla). More than ever, Boubacar Traore has shown himself to be the living, vital connection between Mali and the Mississippi.

VA Sing And They'll Sing Your Song CD
The Megaphone record label was founded in 1997 in the wake of concert promoter Ste?phane Bismuth's matchmaking of Liverpool quartet Shack with west-coast legend Love's Arthur Lee, after a 15 year hiatus in the latter's career. Ste?phane went on to produce Michael Head & The Strands's classic 1997 album The Magical World of The Strands (MEGAUK 024CD/LP). In the late '90s he discovered, and released material by, the then little known late folk-blues singer Karen Dalton, now acknowledged by Bob Dylan as his favorite singer in the early '60s Greenwich Village scene, quoted by Adele as her favorite singer, and revered by a large following in the new century's sprawling folk scene. Sing And They'll Sing Your Song features the broad spectrum showcased on the label's releases over twenty years, including "Bahamian Calypso" by Blind Blake, the singer who influenced the first million selling album by a single artist, Harry Belafonte's Calypso, Iraqi Oud, Sicilian young art-rockers, and the first recording endeavor by Julien Barbagallo, a multi-instrumentalist discovered a good seven-hour drive into French countryside, soon bound for fame with Australian band Tame Impala. The title of the compilation is a quote from Alan Price's "Poor People" covered here quite possibly the first time ever. It reflects the number of covers that made their way to the compilation and the label's belief that covers have been discarded too hastily since the '60s, as Karen Dalton's oblivion sadly exemplifies. This compilation comes with a 12-page booklet with unpublished photographs of every artist, including rare shots from the personal archives of Karen Dalton. Features Michael Head & The Strands, Karen Dalton, Simon Dalmais, Silvain Vanot, Lecube, Angil, Antarte, Teppaz & Naz, Blind Blake, and Omar Bashir.

AHMED, ILYAS Closer To Stranger LP
Closer To Stranger is the new solo album by Pakistani-born dream-folk musician Ilyas Ahmed. Drawing on a wide range of influences, his songs incorporate classic singer-songwriter gestures alongside more experimental leanings. Recorded to tape in the studio by Justin Higgins in the fall of 2016 and finished in the spring of 2017, Ahmed's instrumental palette includes: acoustic and electric six- and 12-string guitars, Fender Rhodes, multiple keyboards, tanpura, and percussion. Closer To Stranger stands as a meditation on uneasy identity politics during times of unreason, seeking peace amidst chaos. Jonathan Sielaff (of ambient duo Golden Retriever) cameos with guest saxophone on "Zero For Below", but otherwise the album is a solo affair, alternately feverish, tense, hazed, hypnotic, and narcotic. A slowly unfolding inward journey of late night lullabies and contemplative electric drift.

I-ROBOTS I-Robots Present Phantom Records LP
Mondo Groove celebrates Italo-disco in fine style with the most important tunes from the legendary Phantom Records; a ride deep into the world of the label that has not only produced renowned music, but has been acknowledged as a serious influence on modern disco sounds. Emerging in the late '70s to early '80s, Italo bridged the gap between disco and house, and was a staple of seminal Chicago DJs like Frankie Knuckles. I-Robots, a true connoisseur of the genre, hailing from the Piedmont area of Italy, curated and carefully selected the tracks on this compilation. This eleven-track collection features originals and rarities, officially repressed here for the first time, and two tracks re-edited by I-Robots. The sequence begins with "Come With Me" by Roberto Carlotto. Carlotto was a keyboard player and singer active since the 1960s. His solo recording career began in 1971 with a 7" release, and was followed by the progressive rock cult album Dedicato A Giovanna G, released as Hunka Munka in 1972. At the time he was distinguished by its remarkable technique and the high quality of its equipment that included an incredible number of keyboards and even the first examples of electronic measures. "Comet Music Hall" came out as a 7" as a promotional edition for the homonymous discoteque -- a kind of psychedelic-disco still currently produced by Enzo Draghi. Roberto Ferracin is the man behind the Music One project, the name by which he produced only one LP of short electro-disco jingles. Included here are four of the most powerful cuts. Every Italo funk-disco collector knows "Radio Cosmo 101", a soulful jazzy-disco-funk number produced by the homonymous radio station that was based in Alessandria in 1975, and spawned from the mind of Tony De Giglio, his two brothers, and a group of friends. Included in this LP are the vocal and instrumental versions, as well as a long-version edit by I-Robots. Don Luigi Bernini is a Piedmontese priest who has devoted his life to music. He was introduced into the world of pop music by producers Riccardi & Albertelli and debuted with a single in 1977. Of his discography, his most interesting work is undoubtedly the weird Telepatia (1979) -- an electronic experimental album with the theme of good and evil always in the foreground. "Whirlwind" from Telepatia is featured here. Also features The One "O" One's.

MIRT & TER Bacchus Where Are You? CD
The two staples of Polish electronica are on it again. Mirt and TER, after solo releases are back together with their next offering. Culled from hours of "live-in-the-studio" improvisation, these 45 minutes stand out among the contemporaneous albums with a one-of-a-kind mix of post-ambient electronica having as diverse roots as techno, minimal music, krautrock electronica, and Afro-beat. Based on sounds created with modular synthesizers with a dash of Prophet 12, Mirt and TER venture on a journey into thick textures obscuring lace melodies. Instead of typical four-on-the-floor rhythms they draw inspirations from African music and translate them into rich yet subtle digital structure. Subtlety is in fact the key word here. Instead of immediacy of many present-day acts they prefer their music to unravel in a leisurely manner. Each of the five tracks here has a different focus. "Bacchus Theme" is a rhythmic-oriented, almost tribal five-minute piece, whereas "Disaster Reworked" is a floating composition carrying dense drone structures. The centerpiece seems to be "Wooden Object" closing in at 14 minutes, where Mirt and TER seem to play with their toys, but at the same time not losing focus on creating a cohesive piece of work. You can say the same thing about the whole album: it's varied, each fragment stands on its own, but at the same time all five of them create one coherent record. CD version comes in a four-page digipak.

FLEISCHMANN, B. Stop Making Fans CD
B. Fleischmann, the longest-tenured solo artist on Morr Music, returns with indie-spirited, electronica-enhanced moments of bliss on his new album Stop Making Fans. Recorded with a little help from friends including vocalist Gloria Amesbauer, Markus Schneider (guitars), and Valentin Duit (drums), it's a two-part reflection on artistic self-reliance vs. fame-seeking conformism, another deeply personal, utterly idiosyncratic album by the indie-tronic trailblazer. "Stop it and just DO", Sol LeWitt once wrote to sculptor Eva Hesse -- and listening to B. Fleischmann's new album, he indeed does both: He slams on the brakes and stops looking at what anyone else is doing, stops pleasing, stops being restrained, and at the same time he floors the accelerator and delivers the kind of high-paced work that bursts at the seams with polyphonic energy and an urgency unique to his music. Arriving with interlocked bleeps, the hustle and bustle of an invisible grand station's atrium ("Here Comes The A Train"), Fleischmann's trademark vocals serve as a gentle reminder to resist the siren calls, to not trust the latest hype. Energy levels remain high throughout the first part of the album -- whether it's the mumbling, personal stocktaking of what feels like an underwater hymn ("There Is A Head"), the robotic, immodest pop tune "It's Not Enough" (featuring Gloria Amesbauer) or the return to light-speed mode on "Wakey Wakey" -- the first half of this album is indeed all about letting off some steam. After the collected canter of seven-minute instrumental "Hand In", the multi-instrumentalist and his studio mates kick off the slower-paced part two with the title song: it's a sonic tapestry that's impossible to compare or pigeonhole when he changes the rhythm in mid-track and turns yet another corner when you thought there was a fixed pattern. Guest singer Gloria Amesbauer returns for soothing tunes "The Pros Of Your Children" and "Hello Hello". B. Fleischmann guides us to his almost jazz-tinged "Little Toy", and leaves behind an "Endless Stunner" -- another typically dense and shape-shifting stream of harmonies. Stop Making Fans, Fleischmann's his first full-length release in five years, is another totally unique, and thus potentially fan-base enhancing release.

WAREIKA Water, Sky, Sun, Wood CD
"Music is the silence between the notes," the French composer Claude Debussy once said. The German trio Wareika, consisting of Florian Schirmacher, Henrik Raabe, and Jakob Seidensticker, love the silence between their notes, even if their music is often fully loaded with many detailed sounds, rhythms, melodies, and intercultural sound links. Since 2007 they've spread their passion for repetitive club grooves in the minimal house spheres that love to swing in an epic way. With four albums on labels like Perlon (PERL 081LP, 2010) or Visionquest, as well as EPs for labels like Eskimo (ESK 502365, 2008), Tartelet (TART 001CD, 2010), Circus Company (CCS 061EP, 2011) or Bar 25, the trio has proofed their craftsmanship for multi-layered dance music, already arrestingly deep on numerous releases and during tours around the globe. Now they deliver a new one-hour long sonic journey on the Tokyo based Mule Musiq, the label on which Wareika member Florian Schirmacher already released as part of the Glowing Glisses project in 2008 (MULE 048EP). Wareika are not new to the Japanese imprint, as they previously dropped a remix for the mysterious project Jemmy in late 2015 (MUSIQ 185EP). And now they present Water, Sky, Sun, Wood, an ambitious one-track love letter that kicks you deep into meditation, assuming you'll surrender yourself to their complex sounding and grooving story-arc. It all started with an unplanned four-hour jam session between Henrik and Florian, gaming and messing around on the piano, guitar, and drum computer. Later Florian edited the happening into a one-hour sensation, Henrik added some congas and synth lines, and Jakob mixed it down. The result is a meticulously edited, deeply absorbing dance between the piano, guitar, conga, MFB tanzbär, MFB Dominion 1, OB-6, Jupiter 6, and Manikin Mellotron synthsizer. You can use it to get lost. You can use it to move to a place beyond words that guarantees some genuine experience. Or you just can shut yourself down to it, dive deep into your unforeseeable dream world, and dance your sub-consciousness around and around. Wareika's latest adventurous blend of jazz, techno, house, and world music will move each soul individual. Water, Sky, Sun, Wood is a reverberation of the inner notes that are floating and dancing in Florian, Henrik, and Jakob. CD version includes an additional track.

ASTRO, GLENN The Taurus EP 12"
Raw, soulful, and agitating: Glenn Astro, the humble house sorcerer from Berlin, produced four tunes and a sweet interlude for Mule Musiq that show house music is still heading for the future. With countless EPs, albums, and collaborations for labels like Ninja Tune, Tartlet, or his own imprint $ex Records, the DJ and producer already emphasized that he thinks house counter to the trend. The Taurus EP shows this anew with unpolished, speedy, even techno-like rhythms, and deep gentle melodies. Dance music for jagged movers that have enough of high gloss sounds. Glenn Astro delivers some fresh grooving prayers.

WINTER, MICHAEL Lower Limit CD
"The immersive sonic textures that characterize Michael Winter's (b. 1980) music are crafted from comprehensive lists of data, with each composition encompassing a musical question that is addressed algorithmically. A performance lasts for as long as it takes to 'answer' the question, expressing all results as efficiently as possible. Winter leaves room for unanticipated results by keeping things open, notably in the instrumentation, which, rather than specifying instruments, tends to designate certain properties such as 'plucked strings," or 'sustaining instruments.' In this way, each performance offers a different manifestation of the same underlying structure. For Winter, beauty is the experience of something new, and to experience something new is to evolve. Even though he allows for a great many possibilities, the recordings here evince a highly tuned aesthetic filter. All of the five works included in this collection use plucked string instruments (guitar, virginal, and harp) and pure tones (ebowed guitar and pure tones). Together, they form a metacomposition, bound together by two versions of necklaces. The titles describe the processes that form each work: necklaces represents picking patterns with aperiodic necklaces (strings of data with specific constraints of rotational and symbolic permutation), and in mass and band a constraint akin to a band pass filter is applied to an Ockeghem mass. Likewise, in chorale and finely tuned resonators, instruments resonate the harmonics of a chorale, and quieting rooms makes use of phase cancellation to quiet a room. The title of the piece lower limit refers to Winter's intention to use the smallest amount of code possible -- in other words, to find the lower limit for programming a composition. This idea, in fact, applies to all of the pieces here, since all are concerned with how to express ideas in a maximally efficient way."

JORGE AND ALMAZ, SEU Seu Jorge And Almaz 2LP
2018 repress with download code. Originally released in 2010. "Listening to this remarkable album for the first time you'll surely be struck first by the deep, soul-piercing voice of that great Brazilian singer, Seu Jorge. Yes: he's a singer first and foremost. Many may know him as an actor for his screen-stealing performances in the likes of Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic and Fernando Meirelles' City Of God but Seu has known since he was a child that we was destined to sing. He's a Brazilian singer who speaks the truth through samba, to paraphrase a well-known Seu Jorge quote. But this project is about a band: Almaz. Drummer Pupillo and guitarist Lucio Maia from the stalwart Nação Zumbi; bassist and composer Antonio Pinto from the soundstages of movies starring Seu Jorge. They came together naturally to record a song for a Walter Salles film; they enjoyed the experience so much that they recorded an entire album of music that inspired them. Songs famous within the Brazilian diaspora (Tim Maia, Jorge Ben) mesh with classic American (Roy Ayers, Michael Jackson) and European (Kraftwerk, Cane and Abel) soul songs begging for a bit of psychedelic samba. They enlisted producer and fellow Brazileiro Mario C. (Beastie Boys, Jack Johnson) to put the finishing touches on the project. Their album is both warm and dark; psychedelic and yet grounded, uplifting but at times somber. To listen to it is to join them in the studio, where the only bandleader is the music and the only agenda is to follow your heart."

ANSWER CODE REQUEST Gens 2LP
Double LP version. Answer Code Request returns with his sophomore album Gens on Ostgut Ton, entering darker but equally bass-heavy territory. Answer Code Request's 2014 debut Code (OSTGUT 031CD/017LP, 2014) was an exciting moment for electronic music in Berlin. As a hybrid gesture, the album's spirit recalled an especially fruitful era in the German capital from the mid-90s to early 2000s, when dub and pad-driven Detroit techno cross-pollinated with Berlin's industrial aesthetic to create one of the city's most exciting musical chapters. Today the musical vision offered by Berghain resident Answer Code Request, real name Patrick Gra?ser, has proved far-sighted. While at first glance electronic music in 2018 seems increasingly balkanized, borders between genres have once again become fuzzier. Now, on his follow up album Gens, Gra?ser looks beyond the bass euphoria of Code toward darker horizons and a desolate atmosphere befitting of current global circumstances. In a sense, Gens (Latin for "tribe" or "lineage") reverses the notion of the hardcore continuum as proposed by music journalist Simon Reynolds; embedded in a tradition of US and continental European techno, Gra?ser seeks its disruption through hardcore outgrowths, from ambient jungle to later variations of British bass music and IDM. On Gens, the unsettling atmosphere is established early on with the fading rave opener of the album's synonymous title track, and continues through the scrambled military communications and post dubstep rhythms of "Sphera". From there, sci-fi pads, heavy phasing, and alien syncopation lead explorative third track "Ab Intus" out into space. A glimmer of otherworldly positivity arrives with the warm, distorted breakbeats and interwoven synth melodies of album standout "knbn2", while Gra?ser melds jungle and techno, "Amen", and 4/4 kicks, on his most dancefloor-oriented "Cicadae". Beatless moments of ambient melancholy lay a foundation for the second half of album, where soon the faster, more hectic stereo delays, broken rhythms, and heavy bassweight of "Audax" and "Tu" shift the focus back and forth between double and half-time. The hyper-distorted bassline, synthesized ember crackling, and contemplative melody of heavy album closer "An Unattainable Distance" provides perhaps the most otherworldly moment on Gens. Here, Gra?ser's massive sound trudges away from the dancefloor with a slow, resounding kick drum, pounding off in the distance and into an electronic abyss. On Gens, Gra?ser continues to offer an alternative, bass-heavy, and groove-based path forward for techno -- one that both challenges listeners and leads them through a sonic narrative.

DJ KOZE Seeing Aliens 12"
DJ Koze forthcoming Knock Knock album, melts a million genres and none into one another, and it comfortably includes "Seeing Aliens". "Seeing Aliens" unquestionably is a banger, its bass riff snaking around your body like a python, its high-drama strings, pianos, and outbursts of noise designed for maximum crowd pressure release. The exclusive B side track, "Nein König Nein" ("No King No"), meanwhile, is slightly gentler on the face of it: it's less about sonic pressure, more about hip-shaking syncopation. It's a peculiar brain-tweaking accumulation of detail, with a heart of house and disco.

ORAM, DAPHNE Oramics 2CD
Restocked; 2007 release. Daphne Oram is best-known for the design of her Oramics system, and also for co-founding the BBC Radiophonic Workshop in 1957, but until the release of this material, the only easily-available piece of music by her on CD was the 8-minute long "Four Aspects." There was also a 7" EP from 1962 on HMV, released as part of the Listen, Move and Dance series that was specifically designed to help children dance. Although the short pieces on this record are very basic, it could be argued that this is the first-ever electronic dance record! This is a survey of nearly all the major pieces that she produced since her departure from the BBC in January 1959 until her final tape piece in 1977. During this time, she worked independently in her home studio, and thanks to a grant from the Gulbenkian Foundation in 1962, she was able to pursue her interests. In Britain there were no state-funded studios other than the Radiophonic Workshop, which mainly existed at the behest of the drama studio and was not generally seen as a place to develop personal artistic ideas. There were also no university studios at this time, so it was necessary for British electronic composers to be self-funded. Throughout this period, she devoted her attention to developing her Oramics "drawn sound" system, which consisted of a large machine that enabled drawn patterns to be converted into sound. This system was eventually fully realized in the late '60s and several pieces here incorporate its use. The two and-a-half hours of music on this 2CD set covers the whole range of Oram's post-BBC output. All of the music is electronic with some occasional use of real instruments, especially small percussion and piano frame. There is also some use of musique concrète techniques. The works fall roughly into the following categories: works for TV and cinema advertising, film soundtracks, music for theater productions, installations and exhibitions as well as concert pieces and several studio experiments. There are also a few short pieces that resulted from an experimental music course given by Oram at a high school in Yorkshire in 1967.

CAPTAIN MAURICE SEDDON The Seddon Tapes: Volume 1 LP
Captain Maurice Seddon -- a living anachronism. A unique combination of eccentricity and military discipline. He also bore the confidence endowed by an elite public school education, but due to a change of family fortune he was left with no money, and eventually, no job. Far from being snobbish, he faces the world anew and becomes an inventor of heated clothes, with a tremendous willingness to talk to and meet people from all walks of life, cheerfully maintaining and advocating his own exacting standards, occasionally proclaiming a well measured indignation towards the modern age. Somehow he manages to stay (most of the time), on the right side of pomposity, by exuding a calm, forgiving good nature and natural charm. Speaking English, but lapsing into German, only adds to the eccentricity. These recordings were collected by William English from the floor of his cottage shortly after he died and just before the building was demolished. Many other tapes were left behind. The only recordings he made were audio letters, diaries and most prolifically, his phone conversations. The twelve pieces on this LP were recorded between 1968 and 2003 and are mainly made up of phone calls, incoming and outgoing; to TV and radio stations, friends, relatives, his dentist, and sundry others. That anyone would routinely record their phone conversations on a two-way system of their own devising is odd enough, but the sheer range and sometimes bizarre nature of these calls turns them into a strange "objet trouvé", and offers a glimpse into the life of a man who undoubtedly left a strong impression on everyone he came into contact with. Comes with an eight-page 12" insert to help explain it all. Pressed at Optimal in a numbered Edition of 500 (numbered).

JAH STITCH Watch Your Step Youthman LP
LP version. Radiation Roots present a reissue of Jah Stitch's Watch Your Step Youthman, originally released in 1977. After a disjointed childhood that saw him raised largely by two aunts between eastern Kingston and rural St Mary, Melbourne James became the toaster Jah Stitch after running away from home and linking with the Spanglers street gang, whose Princess Street headquarters was also the base of the popular Tipper Tone sound system. After cutting his teeth on Tipper Tone alongside Big Youth and Dr Alimantado, friction over financial recompense saw him forming the rival Black Harmony set in 1975, but because the new sound was based in a district that was on the other side of the political divide, Stitch was shot in the face at point-blank range, his miraculous survival immortalized in the Bunny Lee-produced hit, "No Dread Can Dead", which became the title track of Stitch's debut album. Watch Your Step Youthman was the follow-up set released by Bunny in 1977, and again places Jah Stitch's understated Rasta-oriented chanting over a set of rock-hard Aggrovators rhythms, recorded with Johnny Clarke, John Holt, Derrick Morgan, and others.

JUDGE DREAD Dreadmania (It's All In The Mind) LP
LP version. Radiation Roots present a reissue of Judge Dread's Dreadmania (It's All In The Mind), originally released in 1972. Dreadmania (It's All In The Mind) is Judge Dread's (nee Alexander Hughes) very first album, originally released by Trojan Records in 1972, and is a confirmed ska and skinhead reggae classic. The least likely of reggae stars, the white, Brixton-raised Dread had previously served as a club bouncer (where he met Derrick Morgan and Prince Buster), wrestler, bodyguard, DJ, and debt collector for Trojan Records, before hitting it big in 1972 with "Big Six" -- inspired by Prince Buster's classic "Big 5" -- which reached number 11 on the UK chart and sold nearly a half a million copies. On the back of that hit, and its follow up "Big Seven", the label quickly assembled an album to cash in on their success, and its title, Dreadmania, aptly summed up the state of the nation, as Judge Dread fever gripped the island. Of course, the two hits were included within, as was "Oh She Is a Big Girl Now", which was subsequently spun off as a single, and "Dr. Kitch", which later reappeared as a B side. Appropriately enough, the Chuck Berry hit "Ding A Ling" was covered, and just in case there were any remaining doubts about the album's contents, there's even a track titled "Donkey Dick". "It's all in the mind/It's all in the mind/The rudeness it's all in the mind," the Judge ruled on the opening track. Perhaps, but Dread could make even a nun blush. He was the king of the double entendre, his clever wordplay and wit a revelation for the staid British. But he also captured the imagination of Jamaicans. Dread wrapped his rude lyrics within perfect reggae backdrops, with many of his songs built around classic Jamaican rhythms, adding further authenticity to his sound.

FIRE! The Hands CD
Very much a tight knit unit with three equal players, Fire! has been likened to powerful guitar led trios such as Cream and The Jimi Hendrix Experience, but with Johan Berthling's heavy, doom-laden basslines being such a typical identifier, you can't help but think of Black Sabbath's debut album (1970) when it comes to hypnotic impact. The Hands is the trio's sixth album and it once again displays a totally uncompromising and intriguing mix of (mostly) heavy, dark, and intensely burning music whether one decides to call it jazz or rock. The album closes on a quiet and reflective note with the appropriately titled "I Guard Her To Rest. Declaring Silence." And you might say it's easily their best so far. Personnel: Mats Gustafsson - tenor, baritone and bass saxophones, live electronics; Johan Berthling - electric and double bass; Andreas Werliin - drums, percussion and feedback.

LUKA PRODUCTIONS Fasokan LP
2018 repress. New age music from West Africa. Lush and hypnotic dreamscapes combine traditional instrumentation with sweeping electronics, field recordings, and soothing affirmations. Bamako-based composer Luka Productions delves into avant-griot, transforming ancient music into the 21st century. The songs are meditative and sage, as voices guide the listener through ways of living, from the village life to the modern world. Inspired from early electronic music, library records, and new age, this is easily one of the most left-field recordings to ever come out of Mali. In Bambara. Luka Productions is based in a small studio off a busy street in the capital of Bamako. A repurposed boutique, there are two small couches framing the computer and console of studio engineer, rapper, and producer Luka Guindo. One of the most sought after producers in Bamako, he has worked with Supreme Talent Show, Ami Yerewolo, Iba One, Van Baxy, and many more. Luka is self-taught and PC-based (Cubase, Reason, and Fruityloops), one of many producers/studio owners that create all the hip-hop produced in Bamako. Luka relies on melodies -- he plays piano in the local church -- that mimic the vocals, complementing one another. The drums are heavy and punchy, and pitch-bended keys solo over the distinctive and improvisational rhythms. He often adds cut up djembe and balafon to the mix to give a local touch, which are sampled though not in the studio, but packaged in a Native Instruments plugin. The project here comes from working off a project of collaborative "fake" ethnographies, inspired loosely by Craig Leon's Nommos (1981). "Terriya", as an example, was mixed into a field recording and conjured scene: a stressed out Bamako taxi driver, gridlocked in stifling humidity of the fast growing riverside metropolis, concentrating on the soothing voice on the cassette. Luka made a full album of recordings based around this idea. The resulting tracks are inspired, but wholly original. Lush and hypnotic dreamscapes combine traditional instrumentation with sweeping electronics, field recordings, and soothing affirmations in these original compositions. Cut up Kora and Balafon are layered over software percussion, flute, horns, and synthesizer. They are at once familiar to Mali, lying between the measured griot speaking over a looping melody to the verbal wordplay of contemporary Bamako hip-hop. Meditative and cosmic, Fasokan guides the listener through ways of living, from the village life into the modern world.

POPOLI/MARCO DALPANE, TIZIANO Scorie LP+CD
Soave present an official reissue of Scorie, Tiziano Popoli and Marco Dalpane's minimal wonder from 1985. Long coveted and hunted by collectors, Scorie falls among the strange and definition resistant artifacts of Italy's remarkable avant-garde music scene of the '70s and '80s. An emblem of sonic diversity rendered through electronic sound, distilling a daunting number of traditions and ideas, while sculpting its own world of creative singularity, standing apart from the rest. While a great many of Italy's avant-garde and experimental music practitioners began within the spectrums of popular music, slowly pushing into more explicitly ambitious and challenging realms as the years wore on, Tiziano Popoli and Marco Dalpane represent a change in the directional tide. Scorie is a part of movement toward, and the incorporation of, popular forms within avant-garde music which swept across the globe during the 1980s. As challenging and uncomfortable as it is seductive and inviting, Scorie weaves a world without boundary, of collision and harmony. A vision of possible futures, rendered in its present day. A melodic realm, almost entirely constructed through the use of synthesizers, with subtle interventions of electronic rhythm generators, bridging the metronomic territories explored by Terry Riley and Steve Reich and the drifting harmonics of new age, with the moodiness of new wave and the adventurous spirit of the avant-garde. Comes on color vinyl; Includes insert and CD.

MUSLIMGAUZE Mullah Said 2LP
First vinyl edition; originally released on CD in 1998. Those not familiar with Bryn Jones's style will listen slack-jawed at the shear anticipatory nature of his sound collage. The six lengthy tracks on Mullah Said are based on hypnotic and somewhat menacing grooves: a repetitive dub bass beat, waves of Middle Eastern strings and voices, layers of building hand percussion. Each track is a respective, but the washes of sound/percussion come and go often creating a sense of motion and change. All of the tracks are similar and even share elements. Mid-East tension is so accurately captured through the use of the regions instrumentation (especially percussion), sinister electronics, samples of men chanting, women crying, sounds culled from the horrors of war, and occasional angry distortion that the listener's listener will be transported to the belly of the beast. Mullah Said displays two aspects of the work of Muslimgauze. Firstly, musically, it is in the delightful drifting ambient vein. The percussion is mainly acoustic hand drums -- providing a rhythm of aural features -- the trademark shimmering string sound heard on a number of releases is much in evidence, rhythms are generally slower, there are lots of samples of people speaking in conversation, markets wherever. "Mullah Said" opens the disc with the lovely mix of these sounds. "Every Grain Of Palestine Sand" continues the mood, with a slightly faster tempo, and more emphasis on the beat. But it soon locks into a mesmeric lassitude as various effects echo or smear the sounds, drums come in for short moments, and different string sounds join the play. "Muslims Die India" follows the mood though the voices seem darker and sadder. And then comes "Every Grain Of Palestinian Sand" followed by "Muslims Die India". Yes -- not a typo, these tracks are repeated. Muslimgauze's trend is to remix himself. Prime Muslimgauze Middle Eastern ambience -- if you like that side you will love this album. The final track is short and different, a crackling ground over which a singer chants a song interrupted by machine-gun percussive bursts -- "An End". Recorded at the Abraham Mosque, Manchester; Engineered by John Delf. Edition of 500.

ATLAS Breeze LP
LP version. Studio Mule present a reissue of Breeze, originally released in 1987. One of the best and most complex Japanese jazz fusion albums, 1987's Breeze was recorded by Hiroyuki Namba, Eiji Kawamura, and Toshiro Imaizumi's band Atlas. Hiroyuki Namba is one of the most important Japanese keyboardist of the '80s with a legacy that includes Japanese cosmic classic Who Done It?/Tropical Explosion (1983), a sought-after gem by diggers. In addition to his work with his progressive rock band Sense Of Wonder, he's also known as a member of Tatsuro Yamashita's band. Eiji Kawamura is a highly respected arranger who has worked on projects by major recording artists like Kyoko Koizumi and Hideaki Tokunaga, and Atlas's third member Toshiro Imaizumi is a skilled studio musician who's also worked on major projects. The album opens with the soothing sounds of ocean waves that turn into the melancholic fusion number that is "Mediterranean Breeze", setting the Balearic mood for the whole album. "Simpatia" is an album highlight with a euphoric feel that could be Tokyo's answer to the sounds of Ibiza -- an obscure Japanese gem. "After Brunch With You" is a sunny samba fusion with a playful, bright piano melody, followed by "Summer Breeze", an electric fusion jam that sounds like Holger Czukay wrote it. A track that was so ahead of its time, it wouldn't be surprising if International Feel picked it up and released it as is. Breezy mellow tune "Never Come Into Your Eyes" is reminiscent of the sentimental feeling one gets around summer's end. Another album highlight, "Indige", is one of Japan's most unique dance tracks of the time, an electric disco stomper that sound like it could've been produced by Todd Terje. "Breeze For Siesta" features Toshiro Imaizumi's beautiful piano paying, a relaxing song that wouldn't sound out of place on ECM. "Love Beach" blends prog influences with fusion in a way only Hiroyuki Namba can do. The album ends with "Madrigl", a magical song with dramatic and melancholic moments, full of quintessentially Japanese sense of beauty.

VA Saigon Rock & Soul: Vietnamese Classic Tracks 1968-1974 CD
2018 repress. The long-awaited foray into the Vietnamese rock, pop and soul sound of the late 1960s and early 1970s is finally here. Saigon Rock & Soul delivers the goods international retro collectors have been searching for in vain for many years -- and it delivers beyond belief. Every song is a mini-masterpiece, be it heavy acid-rock psychedelia, horn- and guitar-drenched funk grooves, or gripping soul ballads reflective of life during wartime. The tracks that form this collection cut a window into a rich musical Vietnamese music scene that has long been obscured, and for the most part, forgotten. As the scope of electrified Vietnamese music from the 1960s and 1970s begins to be revealed, it becomes evident that this was among the heaviest and most eclectic musical scenes of Southeast Asia at the time. These songs tell of war, love and what war does to love. All of them were recorded in makeshift studios and even U.S. army facilities while the Vietnam War raged -- and were issued by a handful of Saigon record companies on vinyl 45s and reel or cassette tapes. Westernized forms of music in Vietnam had appeared during the latter 19th century, and especially during the early 20th century, under the influence of the French colonizers. Tan Nhac (trans. "modern music") always incorporated both domestic and international sounds, and continued to develop alongside Western musical trends. During the 1960s and 1970s, pulp ballads were being recorded by leading crooners of the time who alternated between modern and traditional forms of regional music. When the electric guitar hit the streets of Saigon, Vietnamese renditions of contemporary instrumental trends such as surf-rock, beat and twist soon emerged, followed by some pretty deep soul sounds inspired by Motown radio hits as well as funk grooves brought on by James Brown and his contemporaries. By the mid-1960s, Vietnam had been ravaged by war for years. American G.I.s had become a standard fixture in Saigon, as did many of the cultural artifacts they brought with them. This certainly included the music. The sounds of rock and roll dominated the radio waves, and Saigon nightclubs were teeming with new sounds. Musically, The Shadows and The Ventures soon gave way to The Beatles and The Rolling Stones as an enthusiastic set of young Vietnamese rockers signed on to the lifestyle, always eager to hear the latest musical trends the G.I.s would bring in on LP or tape. This era saw the birth of a vibrant rock scene, yet rock music and anything that came close was commonly referred to as "soul" in the Vietnamese genre-listings. Like many cultures in Asia, Vietnamese music is recorded, marketed, listened to and disposed of in a relatively quick manner. This level of advanced ephemera ensures a degree of difficulty when trying to unearth and discover cultural histories. Literally, most of the music heard here has been brought back from the dead. Artists featured include some of Vietnam's most popular at the time: Elvis Phuong, Hung Cuong, Mai Lei Huyen, Le Thu, Thai Thanh, Giao Linh, Mai Lei Huyen and the CBC Band. Features 70 minutes of classic original recordings compiled by Mark Gergis with extensive liner notes.

THIS KIND OF PUNISHMENT This Kind Of Punishment LP
"In the fertile terrain of New Zealand's 1980s post-punk scene, few figures loom as large as the Jefferies brothers. Graeme Jefferies and Peter Jefferies -- the primary forces behind This Kind Of Punishment -- wrote some of the best music to come out on Flying Nun, Xpressway or elsewhere. A dizzying mix of pastoral ballads and DIY experimentation, TKP's songwriting was at once classic and acutely raw. On their self-titled debut, the Jefferies brothers and Chris Matthews eschew the punk-informed modes of their contemporaries for a sound that is decidedly more deliberate / intimate. Rooted in a marriage between simplistic, classically-influenced piano, alternating guitar chime and sparse, subtle violin drone, This Kind Of Punishment is a contemplative, inventive collection of ideas corralled via economic 4-track recordings, minimal instrumentation and an austere performance style entirely of the Jefferies' own making. Songs like 'After The Fact,' 'In View Of The Circumstances' and 'Two Minutes Drowning' boast a living quality whereby the listener can act as bystander to these moments of creation -- a trait that the band would expand upon throughout the course of their brief tenure. First-time vinyl reissue since its initial release in 1983."

THIS KIND OF PUNISHMENT A Beard Of Bees LP
"In the fertile terrain of New Zealand's 1980s post-punk scene, few figures loom as large as the Jefferies brothers. Graeme Jefferies and Peter Jefferies -- the primary forces behind This Kind Of Punishment -- wrote some of the best music to come out on Flying Nun, Xpressway or elsewhere. A dizzying mix of pastoral ballads and DIY experimentation, TKP's songwriting was at once classic and acutely raw. Among This Kind Of Punishment's myriad recordings, A Beard Of Bees best outlines the collective vision of the Jefferies brothers. Their classic second album feels more meticulous than its predecessor, proffering a grey, near-Mancunian influence that serves as both touchstone and springboard for the proceedings. The unique maneuvering on 'Trepidation' is a marvel: guitar sweetness shifting toward melancholic piano and ending with their combined shimmer. Conversely, the augmented VU-inspired noise of 'East Meets West' positions itself as the album's prime moment of severity, creepily building toward horror-show screams that inch to a buried, found-sound resolution. Originally self-released in 1984, A Beard Of Bees has been out of print for almost 25 years."

MCPHERSON, ZOE String Figures LP
A multi-platform production that explores the overlap between the digital and the organic through field recordings of Inuit throat singing may sound, on surface level, to be something that is a rather niche. However, Zoë McPherson's exploration of this world on String Figures is a deeply rhythmic, immersive, and forward-thinking piece of electronic-leaning music that remains just as danceable as it does experimental. The album is fundamentally one of duality, exploring the traditional and the contemporary, organic and electronic, audio and visual, history and the future. Rooted in this duality is also a core theme around string being one of the most ancient and playful art forms and the seemingly infinite possibilities it offers in terms of shapes, structures and figures lines up with this as a trans-global art project. String Figures is an album that, over time, will involve video art, choreography, 3D motion design, macro film, instrumental, and electronic sound. Although for now it's being presented through an AV performance, films, and a record with McPherson collaborating with director Alessandra Leone. Over the seven tracks -- which are laid out as chapters -- the record explores glitchy electronics, dub-tinged grooves, polyrhythms, and a huge array of instruments that takes in quiet blasts of atonal sax alongside wonky synths. This of course cross-pollinates with the throat singing and experimental field recordings to create an utterly inimitable sonic sphere. For McPherson it's about mixing worlds, histories, and timeframes and she uses a 1991 quote from Laurie Spiegel to hit home how she has elaborated upon this original thought of history and future overlapping: "Folk music is considered anonymous common property in a culture and that's what a lot of computer music and other kinds of music data may end up becoming." However, there's also a purer reason for the exploration of these worlds and colliding them together. "Basically I thought that electronic music that is only digital is a bit boring and as I'm connected to jazz music for many reasons, I wanted it to sound organic: real instrumentation, field recordings."

ABRAMS AND NATURAL INFORMATION SOCIETY, JOSHUA Simultonality CD
Repressed. CD release of the follow-up to Joshua Abrams's critically acclaimed 2015 album Magnetoception. Credited to Joshua Abrams & Natural Information Society (NIS), this the first recording in the project's four-album history made by a regularly gigging manifestation rather than a special assembly of friends. Recorded in 2014 and 2015 in single takes by the full ensemble during and after tours of the U.S. and Canada, Simultonality once more affirms the project's unique approach to joining traditional musics, American minimalism, and jazz with the Gnawa ceremonial instrument the guimbri. Stasis, continuity, and repetition -- central qualities of Abrams's language -- defined Magnetoception, a double album of beautifully spacious and unhurried music that rated high on both Pitchfork's "Experimental Records Roundup" and The Wire's "Releases of the Year" at the end of 2015. These same qualities form the heart of Abrams's music on Simultonality. But while Abrams once said Magnetoception is about "winter & death," Simultonality, in Abrams's words, is an album of "pure motion." Without sounding frenetic it is the most explosive NIS music on record, and without sounding over-determined it is Abrams's most structured and thru-composed music yet. Much of it is also fast ("the last record was slow"), a mass of densely patterned elements swiftly orbiting constantly reconfiguring centers that are variously harmonic and rhythmic, clearly stated or implied. While so teeming and tightly packed as to sometimes seem impossible to parse, the music is at no time any more disorderly than a colony of bees pollinating a vast garden. Its many moving parts function in a mutualistic relationship toward fulfilling Abrams's long-stated intention for the project: to help listeners achieve a meditative center and to consciously use music as a gateway to living. Abrams credits the great bassist and composer William Parker as an inspiration for this intention. The musicians on Simultonality date back to the nascency of NIS. Along with Hamid Drake, Mikel Avery and Frank Rosaly are Abrams's first-call drummers for the project. Abrams prefers two or more drummers in NIS whenever possible. On Simultonality, Avery is in the left channel, Rosaly the right. The metallic shaker sound sometimes heard in the center of the stereo image is the rattle attached to Abrams's guimbri. Astute heads may recognize the rhythm in "Sideways Fall" as Jaki Liebezeit's drum break from Can's "Vitamin C." At Abrams's behest the two drummers divided the beat into separate parts. According to Hamid Drake the rhythm was popularized, if not originated, by John "Jabo" Starks and Clyde Stubblefield of The J.B.'s. Nearly ten years into an existence that began in 2008, Abrams and the NIS wear their influences with creativity and ease. Longstanding NIS members Ben Boye and Emmett Kelly were previously together with Abrams, or not, in Bonnie Prince Billy's band, and Abrams and Boye have at different times played in Kelly's band The Cairo Gang (while Boye and Kelly are in Ty Segall's Freedom Band as of 2017). Harmonium player Lisa Alvarado also contributes the large-format pattern paintings used by NIS at concerts and for its album covers.

And while the promises of a popular culture infused with fresh art school ideas had gone stale by the 1970s, a teenage Ed Ball would recognise the dawning of an independent DIY culture as a chance to rekindle them in a brand new way. MONOCHROME SET, THE 1979-1985: Complete Recordings 6CD BOX
Emerging at the end of punk era, The Monochrome Set's estrangement from society came from a more arty angle. This boxset is the full account of their frantically productive early period, the perfect document of an under-appreciated chapter of British pop history. Though widely unknown, they are one of the most influential British bands of the last 40 years, with the early Morrissey and Marr, Blur's Graham Coxon, and Franz Ferdinand's Alex Kapranos among their admirers. Though Ganesh Seshadri, aka Bid, never went to college, The Monochrome Set are often seen as an archetypal art school band. In 1979 they released a string of snappy, now highly collectible singles on Rough Trade, followed by early masterpieces Strange Boutique (1980) and Love Zombies (1980). In 1982 they released their third LP Eligible Bachelors on Cherry Red Records. Their major label effort The Lost Weekend (1985) contained their biggest hit "Jacob's Ladder"."... the early Monochrome Set sound betrayed a fondness of Lou Reed and American psychedelia, and though they shared their generation's sense of estrangement, they certainly weren't part of the punk revolution. . . . [the Hornsey School of Art] was where lead guitarist Tom Hardy, later to be known as Lester Square, studied with a certain Stuart Goddard aka Adam Ant . . . The Monochrome Set's lack of breakthrough success is usually attributed to their inability to churn out the hits, but in hindsight their now highly collectible first four seven inches for the Rough Trade label, united here on one disc with all the singles from the early eighties period, prove that they started out as bona fide masters of pop's ultimate format. Released in February 1980, their first album Strange Boutique, featuring the band's percussion-heavy theme song and the Johnny Marr-anticipating 'Love Goes Down The Drain', caught the Monochrome Set in full flight, quickly followed by the equally taut, funny and adventurously dynamic Love Zombies. 1982 saw them move to Cherry Red Records on their third LP Eligible Bachelors, with the catchy lead single "The Jet Set Junta" promptly banned because of its non-existent connection to the Falklands War. . . . After a financially disastrous American tour, the band were resigned to taking the major label shilling with The Lost Weekend (1985), scoring their biggest airplay hit with 'Jacob's Ladder'..." --Robert Rotifer, Canterbury 2017

MONOCHROME SET, THE Maisieworld CD
At the end of the '70s, The Monochrome Set were part of the first wave of "post punk" bands. Right from the beginning, the band earned a solid reputation as purveyors of fine pop, gaining praise from '80s contemporaries such as Morrissey and Edwyn Collins. Importantly, in later years this praise has continued with artists such as Franz Ferdinand, The Divine Comedy, and Graham Coxon, all citing the band as a key influence on their own work. The Monochrome Set sound has often been described as "timeless", and that alone explains why, over the years, the band has continued gaining admirers. Maisieworld is distilled from the pungent flowers of artistic mischief and represents the acme of sonic consummation. LP version includes CD.Congratulations on owning this fine quality product. Maisieworld is distilled from the pungent flowers of artistic mischief and represents the acme of sonic consummation. Welcome to Maisieworld! Your host, Maisie, will guide you through a succession of songs that highlight the volatile, capricious and ultimately unstable nature of The Monochrome Set. New doors lead into hitherto unexplored corridors, where saxophones, trombones, and trumpets claw at you from the Harlem-brownstone walls which pulsate with the ceaseless beating of animal skins. Echoes from a bygone era of expertise race around you as you careen down these sewers of sound, lead guitar solos leap with rusty scimitars, strange organs slither over you on the damp roof, a growling bass snaps at your ankles, a misshapen banjo scuttles across your path, and, all the while, barbarians shake the seed-filled skulls of the dead. Playful vocals sing of your frail organic nature, the sad dreams and hopes that you entertain, and the dismal decisions you make. Scenes of a different imagination tear you like brittle canvas and rearrange your portrait into another's fantasy. Upon your exit from Maisieworld, you will be pleasantly surprised to find that your vessel is now filled with abnormal thoughts. Caution: May contain nuts. And bolts.

Smells Like Teen Spirit is premised in a haptic interrogation of each of the label's previous editions. Berlin-based and Mexico City-born multi-disciplinary artist Mario de Vega occupied the gallery space of Rumpsti Pumsti (Musik) for three consecutive days in October 2016 with a hitherto complete Tochnit Aleph catalog, sanding machine, hammer, and recording equipment. Conflating acts of "playing" with destruction, de Vega took to the recorded works and assorted media with his Spartan toolset, and produced a discordant document of him repurposing the complete archive. Reducing the material to a collection of detritus for exhibition, the sound object is presented as both a conceptual remainder of the site-specific process, and an agitated extension to the label. OLD GRAVES Long Shadows LP
Old Graves are a band from British Columbia, Canada. Long Shadows starts with acoustic guitar, giving the music a progressive and folk feeling. After a minute, the music goes into more of a dark, heavy and melodic direction; the vocals are mostly high-pitched depressive black metal screams and synths are also brought into at times. Throughout the recording, the music alternates between both the heavy and acoustic parts while a great portion of the tracks are very long and bring in a lot of modern atmospheric and post black metal elements. The guitar solos and leads bring in a very dark and melodic style. With Long Shadow, Old Graves have created a recording that is still very heavily rooted in the atmospheric black metal style while also adding in more folk music elements this time around. The production is very raw, yet powerful while the lyrics are melancholic covering nature and death themes. If you are a fan of atmospheric black metal with elements of folk, you should check out this album.

VARTAN, SYLVIE En Ecoutant La Pluie LP
Sylvie Vartran's family emigrated from Bulgaria to Paris in 1952 when she was just a child. Soon she would fall in love with the cosmopolitan Parisian music scene as well as American jazz and rock and roll, and by 1961, at the young age of 17, she began her recording career, one that would prove to be among the most illustrious in French pop music of 20th century. Known for her tough and sultry vocals, Vartran was an early star of the yé-yé scene and these first singles show why. Featuring many French language re-workings of rock and R&B hits from The Isley Brothers to Mel Torme, Paul Anka to Del Shannon, this collection is essential for any fan of '60s French pop.

BEACH BOYS, THE Surfin' Safari LP
Wax Love present a reissue of The Beach Boys' Surfin' Safari, originally released in 1962. Formed in 1961 when Dennis Wilson, the only Beach Boy to regularly visit the beach, asked his brother Brian to write a song about the sport of surfing. The Beach Boys reached number 75 in national charts with their first single (the resultant song "Surfin'") and were immediately signed to a major label. Though many debut albums in the early '60s were mainly built around a few smash-hits, the Beach Boys' 1962 full-length debut on Capitol (featuring such hits as "Surfin' Safari", "409" and their version of the Eddie Cochran classic "Summertime Blues") remains one of the greatest first steps in American pop culture, and a mandatory chapter in the history of rock and roll.

CHARLES, RAY Ray Charles LP
Wax Love present a reissue of Ray Charles's self-titled album, originally released in 1957. Perhaps the greatest crossover artist that ever was, it is impossible to overstate the impact that Ray Charles had on the evolution of both R&B and rock n' roll. Charles's distinctive style transcended genres and influenced musicians from every musical background and from every corner of the globe, but it was during the mid-fifties that Charles really began to rule the R&B charts. His legendary debut LP -- originally released in 1957, and later renamed Hallelujah! I Love Her So for Atlantic (1969) -- is essentially a collection of those hit singles. In 1955 Ray had his first number one hit, "I've Got A Woman", followed by his second and third number one hits, "A Fool For You" and "Drown In My Own Tears", over just the next few months. Almost all of the remaining tracks on the album were also top ten hits from that same period, including "Greenbacks", "Hallelujah I Love Her So", and "This Little Girl Of Mine". This was undoubtedly the era that defined the legend.

GUERO My Way My Rules 2LP
Rebolledo's You And Your Hippie Friends imprint grows its groove footprint on international dancefloors with the full-length debut of Güero, the latest vinyl outing from the Hippie Dance sister label and also its first fully-fledged album project. To attentive hippie friends, the artist name should ring a big, funky bell -- one that sounds exactly like the cut "Convertible Ride" from the notorious A Very Nice Combinado Volume Uno 12" release (2015). Back then, this album's hero was travelling under the somewhat more convoluted El Güero Fresa moniker, but has since dropped some of those conceptual pounds in an effort to reach maximum sleekness. In the same vein, his debut album is a testament to ultimate funk-a-ficiency, digging deep into fizzy arpeggios and chunky basslines -- and the occasional guitar cameo, giving tracks such as bubbling synth opener "Elektronique", the neon-lit "Night Cruising", bouncing electro disco roller "Alto Final", or the programmatic "Space Drifter" just that little extra riff. "Guitar Mayhem", however, is anything but -- you'll discover a pretty dank bouncer and certainly not the squealing meltdown one would expect. "Techno Minimal" doesn't do what it says on the tin, either, opting for an energetic bass 'n' organ workout instead. By now, you'll begin to understand why the album's called My Way My Rules: Güero takes whatever sonic path he desires, no matter what -- which is precisely why he chimes so well with You And Your Hippie Friends's steadily expanding motley crew of rave misfits and studio drop-outs. The way of the hippie is indeed a mysterious one. Double-colored vinyl; Comes in printed innersleeves and a gatefold jacket; Includes a download code.

CURTIS, COLIN Colin Curtis Presents Jazz Dance Fusion 2LP
Double LP version. 2017 saw Colin Curtis celebrate his 50th anniversary as a DJ. He is one of the scene's leading figures as a result of his legendary '70s partnership with Ian Levine at the Blackpool Mecca. This is Colin's own story: "By 1979, the development of Jazz rooms at major soul/funk all-dayers was providing a much-needed outlet for the more discerning collectors and the fanatical jazz dancers. . . . I had started to experiment with the jazzier side of dance tracks at Blackpool Mecca in around 1976 with artists like Patrice Rushen, Bill Summers, Azar Lawrence, Charles Earland, Johnny Hammond, Donald Byrd, etc., all artists I had discovered using the inner sleeves of Blue Note, Fantasy, Prestige, and Mercury labels. . . . [As a collector] I was thriving on searching out more of this amalgamation of jazz styles adding fusion, percussion, vocals and tempo to this burgeoning genre. As the jazz room identity increased within this environment for me Birmingham, Nottingham, Leeds, Manchester all became prominent in their enthusiasm for jazz dance. . . . Baz Fe Jazz, Chris Reed, Shaun Williams, Simon Mansell, Jonathan Woodliffe, Paul Murphy, Eric & Floyd, Hewan Clarke, and many others were willing to push the barriers. This jazz dance explosion spread across the country with DJs like Dr Bob Jones, Colin Parnell, and Boo Sylvester adding to the London connection via clubs like The Electric Ballroom and The Horseshoe. . . . [This] compilation acts as an introduction to this electric, cool and uplifting music that was affecting so many enthusiastic dancers and DJ/collectors. All the tracks on here are taken from one of the most prolific and emerging labels for this genre, Muse Records, that offered the complete spectrum of styles to fit in with this emerging scene crossing over with jazz fusion, be bop, vocals, electric keyboards, and percussion."Double-CD version features Michele Hendricks, Richie Cole, Emanuel K. Rahim & The Kahliqs, Dom Um Romao, Dave Pike, Mark Murphy, Viva Brasil, Walt Barr, Ron Eschete, Eric Kloss, Charlie Earland, David Schnitter, Dom Salvador, Dave Matthews' Big Band, Harold Ousley, Michael Carvin, and Bill Hardman.Further reading in this interview by Greg Wilson: http://blog.gregwilson.co.uk/2017/05/50-years-colin-curtis-uk-mancuso/
