ETCH Altered Roads Vol. 1 12"
Etch presents the inaugural release on new label Altered Roads. The label is set to focus purely on Etch productions. Altered Roads Vol. 1 features four tracks ranging from the psychedelic weightless ambient soundscape of "When The Soul Departs", hazy vintage kung-fu film sampling "Lore Of Samurai", the crushingly powerful break laden homage to the defunct BLOC Festival "Flamingo Grove", and ending on futuristic Warp-driven hip-hop "Defunkt Logic". The scope of these four tracks, disregard for the confines of dancefloor function sets the tone for what is to come on this label.

REITER, EITAN Give It Life 2LP
Eitan Reiter presents Give It Life, released on Guy J's Armadillo Records. Reiter's ever evolving sound across the years has resulted in a varied and vital discography. As Eitan Ratier, he puts out techno on labels like Minus, Traum, and Praxxiz, and has released an excellent house and techno album on Mule Musiq with Sebastian Mullaert (MUSIQ 045CD/MUSIQ 179LP, 2014), as well as solo effort Place I Miss That I Haven't Been To(2010). He produces everything from minimal to psychedelic chill out to downtempo, he works in groups like Loud, and makes music for film and TV. Give It Life brings techno together with dark avant pop, proper songwriting, and inventive studio trickery. It was made partly on the road between gigs around the globe, as well as in four different studios and various other places like a farm in South Africa, a bench in New York, or a hotel room in Tokyo or Mexico. It is a coherent album that is not bound by any self-imposed rules and has come together naturally and organically. It features a number of collaborations, singers and instrumentalists and even finds the artist lets himself sing and play guitar. It also comes with some great videos for the tracks and has spawned a brand new live show with Nimrod Gorovich and Barak Rosen. Kicking off with "Choices", a tender mood is set with carefully treated vocals and slow, somber drums and chords. From there, the melancholic "All That I Know" has more pained chords laid over bustling, broken kick drums and "Fade Away" is an ethereal downtempo number coated in echo and reverb that makes it a hugely resonant track. The likes of "Other Kind Of Illusion" are brilliantly original tracks with gorgeous chords and guitars over pressurized thudding kicks, "Avoid" is a modern day love song without the cheese with sweeping emotions and intimate whispered vocals and big splashes of drums, then things play out through the fractured keys and pixelated synths of electronic masterpiece "Let It Out" and tripped-out beats of "The Black White Read" before ending on the lonely and insular chords and heavyhearted drums of "You Are (The One)". This is another essential album from a talented artist who has many different musical tricks up his sleeve and more than enough skills to carry them off. It is artistic, original and thoroughly absorbing from start to finish.

GODARD + JEAN-PIERRE GORIN, JEAN-LUC Five Films, 1968-1971 6xBLU-RAY
"After finishing his film Weekend in 1967, Jean-Luc Godard shifted gears to embark on engaging more directly with the radical political movements of the era, and thus create a new kind of film, or, as he eventually put it: 'new ideas distributed in a new way.' This new method in part involved collaborating with the precocious young critic and journalist, Jean-Pierre Gorin. Both as a two-person unit, and as part of the loose collective known as the Groupe Dziga Vertov (named after the early 20th-century Russian filmmaker and theoretician), Godard and Gorin would realize 'some political possibilities for the practice of cinema' and craft new frameworks for investigating the relationships between image and sound, spectator and subject, cinema and society. Included here are five films, all originally shot in 16mm celluloid, that serve as examples of Godard and Gorin's revolutionary project: Un film comme les autres (A Film Like Any Other) (1968); British Sounds aka See You at Mao (1969); Vent d'est (Wind from the East) (1970), Lotte in Italia/Luttes en Italie (Struggles in Italy) ( 1971), and Vladimir et Rosa (Vladimir and Rosa) (1971). High-definition digital transfer. High-definition Blu-ray (1080p) and standard-definition DVD presentations. Original uncompressed monaural audio. Optional English subtitles. A conversation with JLG: interview with Jean-Luc Godard from 2010 by Dominique Maillet and Pierre-Henri Gibert. 100-page full-colour book containing English translations for the first time of writing by, and interviews with, Godard and Gorin, and more. Total run time: 456 minutes."

OLDE GODS Gitanes 12"
Gitanes is Olde Gods' longest output to date. Gitanes brings echoes from Spain's not-long gone golden club era. All four tracks are trippy yet solid-grounded, spacey voices and strings leads all flying up and magically suspended over gross rhythmical foundations. "Dear CZ" is built around a moody Casio CZ synth stab topped up with acid videogame-like craziness. "Gitanes" brings entrancing vocals intertwined with more CZ pad action. "All Around" is a foggy and paranoid late-night drive, and "None Of These Bitches" is a homesick folks' walk around Tokyo's Daikanyama area. Olde Gods are JMII and Guillamino.

MOLECULE -22.7°C 2LP+CD
Double LP version. Translucent gatefold sleeve; Printed inner sleeves; Includes CD Molecule returns with a new odyssey both physical and musical. Following the success of 60°43' Nord (BEC 5156067/5156476/5156477, 2015), his concept debut played, recorded, and mixed on a fishing boat during a 34-day journey in the Atlantic Ocean, the French producer decided this time to take the process further up north and embarked on a voyage to Greenland. Isolated for five weeks in the small Inuit village of Tiniteqilaaq, Romain Delahaye used his "survival electrokit" to find new sounds in the fjords, the icefields, and the hostile, yet dazzling landscapes surrounding him. Entirely recorded and mixed in this remote place, the tracks of -22.7°C range from contemplative ambient atmospheres to more upbeat techno blizzards and accurately translate this epic self-reflective adventure across a land of contrast, its abyssal silences, its immaculate glaciers and its blinding whiteness. With ten previously unheard tracks, -22.7°C is set to confirm Molecule's status as a one-of-a-kind producer in today's electro scene.

HIGH RISE II LP
Pitchfork Best New Reissue: 8.4: Black Editions present a reissue of High Rise's II, originally released in 1986. High Rise exploded onto Tokyo's underground music scene with the roar and reckless abandon of a motorcycle accelerating headlong into a dead man's curve. Born from the explosive chemistry of bassist/vocalist Asahito Nanjo and frenetic guitarist Munehiro Narita, the band blazed a wild new stream of psychedelic guitar music. Their second album is a defining document of the band and unquestionably one of the greatest albums to emerge from 20th century underground Japan and beyond. With Nanjo's distorted thunder bass and Narita's wildly narrative lead guitar playing, II is a non-stop tour de force of improvised rock music. Combining elements of garage rock, punk, and no wave, the band pushed all levels fully in-the-red and transcended the limits of rock and psychedelia to create a raw, unique expansion of the music. Black Editions present High Rise's II, newly mixed and mastered by Asahito Nanjo in what the band states is the definitive version of their most quintessential recording. This new edition restores the original vinyl version's textured black and silver artwork. Housed in heavy Stoughton tip-on jacket. Pressed onto high quality vinyl by RTI.

COIL Backwards 2LP
2018 repress; Gatefold double LP version. Includes insert and download code. After the groundbreaking release of 1990's Love's Secret Domain album, Coil were not dormant; their main project was Backwards, which was started in 1992, updated considerably between 1993 and 1995, and transferred in 1996 to New Orleans, where it was finished in the magic of the Nothing Studios of Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails). The album saw the fruition of Jhonn Balance's recent vocal-coaching, which produced haunting, passionate vocals while reaching new heights. Now, in 2015, 23 years after its initiation, these tracks have been beautifully preserved by Danny Hyde and are finally available in highest quality audio. Differing substantially from the later, remixed incarnation, The New Backwards (2008), Backwards contains the original versions of Coil's much-loved tracks "A Cold Cell" and "Fire of the Mind," which have appeared on various compilations over the years, and are now presented as originally intended. This album is the essential bridge between LSD and the later Musick to Play in the Dark series; an essential conduit to understand the journey that Coil took.

LEVI, MICA Delete Beach 2x10"
Mica Levi presents her latest, stunning soundtrack, this time to the Phil Collins-directed anime short Delete Beach (2016), on Demdike Stare. Following on from the maverick pop auteur and film composer's European Film Award-winning score to Under The Skin (2013), and her Jackie soundtrack (2016), this is Mica's first musical accompaniment for animation, by revered designer Marisuke Eguchi, animated by STUDIO4ºC. Delete Beach is a sci-fi anime set in a near future where carbon-based energy is outlawed. The film supposes a paradoxical scenario, one where fossil fuels -- the ostensible accelerator of humanity's progress and decline -- become energy for the toil against state oppression and enforced inequality. In doing so, it resonates with anime's strong tradition of exploring eco-feminist themes and power dynamics, both socio-political and technological. Using a signature palette of dissonant strings and combustible electronics laced with skeletal percussive treatments, Levi paints a series of sweeping backdrops to the short's blend of classically-schooled anime and up-to-the-second CGI designs. The central Delete Beach theme, a diaphanous section of airborne synth-string contours and charred guitar distortion carved in pirouetting turns-of-phrase, appears in Japanese and English narrated versions and an Instrumental mix. They are divided by the beat-driven "Interlude 1" and "Interlude 2" parts, recalling a mix of string slashes mixed with opiated chopped 'n screwed rhythms comparable to Micachu & The Shapes deconstructions of London Sinfonietta. After her work underlying and exploring complex characters in Jackie, a biopic of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and the alien-woman metaphors of Jonathan Glazer's Under The Skin, her Delete Beach soundtrack follows suit with an impendingly tense, viscerally affective sound that reflects and conveys a sense of independence in the face of uncertainty, of a struggle against imposed forces or control systems. It's another beguiling testament to Levi's role as one of the most original and eminent composers of her generation. Gatefold jacket printed on reverse board; Includes 10" x 10" 12-page color booklet of cells from the film. Master and cut by Matt Colton.

CONJOINT Earprints 2LP
Demdike Stare present the first ever reissue of Conjoint's Earprints, originally released in 2000. After a slew of acclaimed releases by Equiknoxx, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe, Shinichi Atobe, and Mica Levi in 2017, Demdike Stare start 2018 in typically unexpected style with a remastered reissue of David Moufang (Move D), Karl Berger, Jamie Hodge, Gunter Kraus, and Jonas Grossmann's gorgeous sophomore Conjoint album, Earprints (2000). Conjoint was the little-known but hugely regarded ensemble founded by David Moufang two decades ago, featuring techno pioneer Jamie Hodge, Deep Space Network's Jonas Grossmann, acclaimed jazz guitarist Gunter Ruit Kraus and, most intriguingly Karl Berger, the jazz pianist and vibraphone player for Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, and George Clinton, to name a few. The ensemble are accompanied on Earprints by Andrew Pekler, Anna-Lena Fiedler, Burkhard Höfler, and Kai Kroker, among many others, and flesh out a full frequency spectrum of instrumental and electronic timbres, precisely yet louchely coalescing a timeless and cool blue sound that is entirely respectful to its roots, yet dares to imagine them in an altered context. In that respect it's an influential, memorable precursor to Jan Jelinek's acclaimed Loop-Finding-Jazz-Records that was released the following year. Democratic in its construction and flush with pregnant, contemplative space between and around the notes, the lasting impression made by Earprints is indelibly classic, quietly awaiting immersion by a new wave of listeners who will no doubt marvel at its many charms. If you're into late night listening and have followed the work of Move D, Miles Davis, Tortoise, Detroit Escalator Company, Elodie, Terre Thaemlitz, or Jan Jelinek's frayed, late night jazz minimalism, this one's for you. Remastered by Matt Colton.

HASWELL, RUSSELL Respondent LP
Russell Haswell returns to Diagonal with a new five-track mini-album called Respondent. Not quite an EP nor long enough for a full album, this record marks a significant shift in direction for Haswell, who collaborates with a vocalist, Sue Tompkins, for the first time in a career defined by its unorthodoxy, Haswell says Respondent is influenced by these formative years when he was exposed to new sounds and ideas but lacked the ability and equipment needed to express himself. "In a way I'm regressing, but I'm not trying to regress with the music," he says. "What I'm trying to do is think about how I felt and the energy and what this stuff communicated to me." Respondent's juiciest cut is "Special Long Version (Demo)" featuring Sue Tompkins. One second shy of ten minutes, this is Haswell's definition of house music. Taking cues from vintage Chicago tracks such as "Your Love" by Frankie Knuckles, Muff Man's "Sit On the Face", and Maurice Joshua's "I Gotta Big Dick", Haswell forces their essence through his filters, distilling the sexual energy to a crude groove, while Tompkins, a Glasgow-based artist formerly of the band Life Without Buildings, talks, shouts and sings, her voice distorted and dulcet. "I want your love," she says at one point. "Let Suffering Become You" is a mangled acid stomp that starts with a sample from the 1980 punk documentary D.O.A.: A Rite of Passage (1980), with Guinness heir Jonathan Guinness haughtily observing: "An awful lot of people who enjoy punk would really like to be back in those days when they could actually see physical people hacking each other to death." Elsewhere, "First In Man" is a cavernous dub-speckled track, with spasmodic lasers, dedicated to Diagonal co-founder Jaimie Williams. Haswell has chosen to release this material as a mini-album because he considers it an "underused format", citing as a classic example New Order's merger of their two early singles "Everything's Gone Green" and "Temptation" on to one five-track 12-inch, titled 1981-1982 (1982), for the US market. He views this release as a stepping stone to his next project, an album featuring a number of guests. So don't rule out that Kylie collaboration just yet. RIYL: Fad Gadget, John Bender, Smersh, LCD Soundsystem. Artwork by Guy Featherstone. Mastered and cut by Matt Colton. Clear vinyl; Edition of 500.

DEATH PEDALS Death Pedals LP
Death Pedals have been a must see live band and fixture of the London DIY scene since around 2010. They've announced that they will be calling time on the band in 2018. To round off their busiest year yet in 2017, they found the time to record their third and final album Death Pedals. The recording of the last release, their third album embraces a more experimental approach than their previous albums. The results are a continuation of the raw noise punk of Meat House (HOSO 005LP, 2016) whilst also bringing in new influences, an almost complete departure from any previous work. With nods to Shellac, Slint, Blacklisters, and Meat Wave, Death Pedals have built on their rock 'n' roll foundations. Heavyweight cardboard; Includes download code; Edition of 250.

It concludes a series of such LP masterworks such as Super Ape, War In Babylon, Police And Thieves, and Return Of The Super Ape. Enthrallingly, it crosses the sound world of Roast Fish Collie Weed & Cornbread with new hybrids -- like the irresistible 11-minute opener, rolling and delirious, a kind of reggae prophesy of Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing," but musically richer, and more glazed, randy and visionary. JTOTHEC Somebody Had To Make This Record LP
JTOTHEC (pronounced "Jay to the Cee") is Jonas Casier. With a home studio stuffed with instruments, a funky mind, his radiant smile, and a truckload of talent, JTOTHEC and his fantastic band -- Peter Lesage (Ertebrekers, Moiano, Gabriel Rios), Jeffrey Jefferson (Ertebrekers), and DJ SNS (Brihang) -- are ready to unleash their amazing power funk on you and the rest of the world. For more than ten years, JTOTHEC followed his own course, learning and absorbing, doing numerous supports and collaborations with, among others, Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra, Témé Tan, STIJN, Aka Moon, Brihang, and Selah Sue. Meanwhile JTOTHEC worked on his own tracks and in 2017, he recorded his debut album with Jean Vanesse (Spirit Catcher) at the GreenHouse Studio in Beaumont. The twelve tracks on Somebody Had To Make This Record show the unmistakable talent of JTOTHEC: from up-beat power funk alternate to catching slow-paced songs, to startling spoken word and a hyper funky instrumental. This album will hit you where it hurts and where it pleases. The luscious and catchy melodies and ingenious arrangements give away influences of Frank Zappa, James Brown, Quincy Jones, Prince, and Jamie Lidell. Yet, on top of that, JTOTHEC managed to develop his own signature sound: authentic, original, playful, warm, just great music. Somebody really had to make this record, and you'll be happy JTOTHEC did. Welcome to the wonderful journey of JTOTHEC's power funk. Graphic design by Jonas Casier. CERTAIN CREATURES Nasadiya Sukta LP
A voice in the ether. A calm, clement drone. A gentle, pulsing throb. Like the ghost of a forgotten future as imagined by the distant past, Certain Creatures' sophomore LP Nasadiya Sukta is a study in timelessness -- crystalline, heartfelt ambient music designed to push light through shadow. Nasadiya Sukta is the debut release on Mysteries Of The Deep, a record label dedicated to total sensory immersion. Mysteries (as it's known colloquially and affectionately) launched in 2011 after a particularly fruitful late-night mixing session, first as a cult podcast series dedicated to narcotic music of all kinds, subsequently expanding into a series of seasonal events. Now, with the release of Nasadiya Sukta, Mysteries Of The Deep becomes a full-fledged outlet for music to play in the dark. Certain Creatures is the alias of Brooklyn-based artist Oliver Chapoy, and Nasadiya Sukta was crafted especially for Mysteries Of The Deep. Its genesis came when Grant Aaron, Mysteries' proprietor, tapped Chapoy to perform at Mysteries' Halloween event in 2015. His performance was the night's axis point, bridging earlier subdued sounds with late-night upbeat moods. Two years later, reworked and reconfigured, this performance is reborn as Nasadiya Sukta. Although divided into six tracks, Nasadiya Sukta coheres into a single extra-terrestrial mass, its beautiful understated elegance encouraging repeat listens. Simultaneously harking back to ambient classics from the '90s while cementing Chapoy as a visionary artist with his own unique voice, Nasadiya Sukta is one for the space-travelers indeed. Certain Creatures has release on Styles Upon Styles and Medical Records. Mini-LP comes in a full-color jacket, printed deluxe sleeve; 140 gram vinyl; Includes download code.

BRISSON, OLIVIER Horizon Capiton LP
"'What is Normal Music?' That was the title I chose for an article some years ago and despite the fact that I was searching something else, it was difficult to find anything better to start these lines about Horizon Capiton; the new LP by French musician Olivier Brisson. Monsieur Brisson lives in Lille and has been involved not only with sound experimentation but also with psychiatry. The latter is not just a detail but an important fact here: this is a work about frames and boundaries. But who (or what) are inside/outside those frames? That's not easy to say. The sound collage brings us to a continuous flow where everything seems mixed: 'professionals' cataloguing 'mental illness', voices of 'patients', tape failures, suggestive music passages, anomalous noises, field recordings from everywhere and several rivers of sounds sailing together along with the listener. The trip is intense and compelling. Beautiful and terrifying. The horizon might be a cushion but it might be also something else. We're culturally trained to believe that something is 'normal' or not and we put a lot of effort in trying to make the world fit in those categories. But in the end who is 'normal' enough to say what is 'not normal'? This is what this record is about and Beware! Sound can easily break barriers, even those you didn't notice were present." --Anla Courtis, Buenos Aires, Argentina, December 2017

SKULLFLOWER Werecat Powers Of The Crossroads At Midnight LP
Matthew Bower and Samantha Davies of Skullflower on Werecat Powers Of The Crossroads At Midnight: "The continuation of the audio trilogy concerning the Darkness of Aegypt: the shadow stuff from whence dark dreams come. The Triad: dark, light and the animating serpent power are delineated by the Egyptian Gods Set, Horus and the Apep serpent. The second parting of the ways, lord of the crossroads, the double horizon, the xroads of day and night, the mauve zone, the death posture. We brought back: a twilight mechanism, and hymns to the charnel ground, ashes, jackals and the bulto hyaena, pacing the departure lounges of abandoned airports."

BOCCARDI & STEFANO PILIA, ALBERTO Bastet LP
Collaboration piece between two major players in the contemporary Italian electro-acoustic music scene. Alberto Boccardi has studied composition and music theory at Milan's Music Civic Academy and has frequently collaborated with Lawrence English, Nicola Ratti, and Maurizio Abate, among others. Stefano Pilia is a prolific guitarist and electro-acoustic theorist with a massive body of work and compositions. He has collaborated with Mike Watt, Nico Vascellari, David Tibet, and Valerio Tricoli, to name a few."The sounding worlds of Boccardi and Pilia meet in quasi-narrative paths. Immediately, from the first glance at the tracklist, something seems to thematize the encounter in its two-faced nature: two dedications ('Bastet' and 'Dayira', the birth), each one in two parts, but also an encounter between electric guitar and percussions. The guitar being itself already an encounter between acoustic and electric sounds. Yet again, organic and electronic soundscapes are coupled down into introspection and vision. While 'Bastet' is set to follow an inner voyage along memories and ambiences where Popol Vuh and Robert Rich seem to faintly appear, it is 'Dayira' that is given the mission of projecting the inner vision into vast emotional landscapes. And at the very end something new is birthed, a minor chord that apparently has nothing to do with the drones and patterns preceding it, along the sound of the entire album. An intriguing surprise that is driven by an electronic, floating aura to a quasi-interrupted ending. Functioning as a promise that this voyage has yet to be finished." --Massimilano Viel, Milano, Italy, January 2018"I love this new album Bastet by Alberto Boccardi and Stefano Pilia right from my first listen I decided I would go to the sea (my pedro town is in the harbor of Los Angeles) to write my thoughts about it cuz the sea is what I first thought of when I heard the first sounds of it coming -- I figured it was the sea cuz I had feelings from the music I had these sensations cuz I felt I was in the ocean -- on a boat... actually not just on a boat but in the bottom of it -- down in the bilge. The musical interaction between Alberto and Stefano is seamless and whole, free of potentially encumbering static structures. I'm drawn into the pitch and yaw, the port and starboard, the heave and ho. The piece is made of two parts ('Bastet' and 'Dayira') with each of those parts being made of likewise two parts. By the middle I feel lower in the bowels of the boat and in fact, this boat is now feeling like a submarine and so not only am I deep down up in the vessel itself, the world I feel around in is also deep down in it, deep down beneath the waves and so I feel the pushing of currents, the pressure of the depths compressing the bulkheads. On the very bottom of the hull's inside, over the keel I place my head so the vibrations can pass right the bone of my skull. The last part of the voyage for me is a surprise cuz now the sub feels more like a train. We're still moving but everything is no longer wet and there are many gifts falling into my eyes and I survey the passing landscapes. The mechanized sounds throughout the piece by now only confirm my suspicion they were only coincidences of chance and not purpose-built reels of barbed-wire to enforce fake borders. Maybe this 'railroad' in my head actually was the sea becoming a river and I got confused. Whatever, Alberto and Stefano created and preformed a whole and beautiful work that I feel we are very lucky to get to share with them. Music connected by imagination to let the spirit flow true. No wonder I read somewhere the cat-headed old Egypt deity of past was considered the guardian of the dream world. I am inspired. Grazie, fratelli." --Mike Watt, San Pedro, California, January 2018

TROU AUX RATS Amour Et Sepulcre LP
Amour Et Sepulcre is the debut LP by Trou Aux Rats, the new creepy and romantic basement organ project of Romain Perrot (Vomir, Free As Dead, Falot, Roro Perrot)."The other night I dreamt about a parallel universe in which Klaus Schulze had some sort of government-paid job installing contact mics and analog synths (which I suspect was mainly to annoy Tangerine Dream) in all the big European cathedrals to 'modernize' the pipe organs. I told him how they used to make cobwebs in the early Dracula movies; you punch a small hole in a yogurt pot full of liquid latex attached to an electric drill, point roughly where you want the cobwebs to go, shut your eyes and hit the trigger. This got ol' Klaus drooling, and pretty soon every church (not to mention cemetery) ceiling in France was dripping with stringy latex goo. . . .. Reclusiveness aside, Romain and I sometimes like to meet up near Notre Dame at a Japanese restaurant run by one of the members of Les Legions Noire, serving 'necro-sushi' and so on... One sunny afternoon, sighing as he removed the fake Quasimodo teeth and the cushion stuffed into the back of his shirt, he handed me the new Trou Au Rats LP, cursing the backache which was the result of his job. 'Give this to Klaus' he said, in a deep voice a few octaves lower than usual. Now, dear reader, let me assure you, I don't know and I don't want to know what kind of entities he'd done deals with in his basement catacomb, but a few days after Klaus heard that album, Roro got to lay down his hunch for the last time, and scored his dream job as full-time organist. Mind you, dream job or not, he does still have to wear the plastic vampire fangs, somehow managing to remain the perfect gentleman, even if they do make him talk funny. Now, if you are aware of his other projects (Vomir being one), chez Roro there's no such thing as a coincidence, and there's always a lot more going on that meets the eye..." --Andy Bolus (Evil Moisture, Royal Sperm), Paris, January 2018.

SISTER IODINE Venom 2LP
French noise scene spearheads Sister Iodine return with their sixth album, Venom. Active since the '90s, Sister Iodine, which involve Erik Minkkinen, Lionel Fernandez, and Nicolas Mazet, has not lost one milligram of their radical and uncompromised approach in sound exploration and limits stretching. Following two studio albums on Parisian label Premier Sang, released in 2009 and 2013 respectively, it took almost five years to shape up Venom. It is with the advent of the 21st century -- more than ever -- that the decisive path of Sister Iodine has taken a fascinating route. From their debut album, ADN 115 (1994), which was strongly influenced by the original New York no wave scene (Mars, DNA, Red Transistor) to their more recent works which are augmented by "newer poisons" such as black metal, or the most abrasive end of industrial music and power electronics, as well as experimental electronics -- Editions Mego has reissued an extended version of Premier Sang's Flame Desastre on CD -- (DEMEGO 009CD, 2009) -- the band has managed to survive through the years from the inhospitable French squats of the nineties to nowadays' established venues and proper tours. Today, the band's music has changed recipients and has attracted younger generations with their organized radioactive chaos, never conceding anything from their initial intensity. Over the years, Sister Iodine will have also created their own idiosyncratic language, for which sound exploration matters and pure beauty seem to count as much as pure explosive ferocity, while intense violence and energy gets deployed in live shows. The last few years witnessed an increasing number of collaborations such as the recent sessions with Meyhna'ch (Mütiilation) or the ones with Masaya Nakahara (Violent Onsen Geisha, Hair Stylistics). Venom includes two tracks featuring the vocal contribution of Stephen Bessac, the deviant frontman of the cult French hardcore band Kickback. Sister Iodine produces a music that is actually unique and unheard anywhere else, one of eternal youth and audacity."Sister Iodine's Venom is a pure and raw, energy-powered album performed like an audio exorcism. Each track contains its own intense physicality to radiate sound illuminations of light inside of darkness. Venom is a powerful album of potent spells that Sister Iodine have conjured and captured as sonic shamans." --Cameron Jamie, Paris, France, January 2018

SENYAWA + VINCENT MOON Calling The New Gods 10"
The film Calling The New Gods, by Vincent Moon, is the document of musicians Rully Shabara and Wukir Suriyadi of the group Senyawa playing outside -- and being filmed on location -- tracing a path from the outskirts of Yogyakarta, Java (on the border of a rice field, on the edge of a garbage dump, etc.) until the center of the city (in the middle of a market, in a fair). In a sort of mandala, of centripetal spiral, during an entire day, from dawn-until-dusk, the film -- with soundscapes shared between the music of Senyawa and field recordings -- captures the powerful, unique, and fascinating presence of the Indonesian duo in the middle of the physical landscapes and human mosaic that helped create it. Two-and-a-half years after the first contact between Okraina and the musicians and filmmaker, the time has come to expose the work to a new audience: Seven songs from the film's soundtrack on a 10" vinyl, with an added etymological obviousness -- that this recording is released on Okraïna, which is Russian for "outskirts", the "suburbs". Filmed, recorded, and mixed by Vincent Moon, in situ, in Yogyakarta (Indonesia, Java) in January 2012, with the help of Aniza Santos and the people of Yogyakarta. Mastering and vinyl cut by Fred Alstadt. Cover art by Gwénola Carrère.

OLIVEROS, PAULINE Electronic Works 1965-1966 CD
Restocked. "1 Of IV" and "Big Mother Is Watching You" were both made in the summer of 1966 at the University of Toronto Electronic Music Studio. "1 Of IV" was previously released in 1967, on Odyssey, alongside works by 2 other young composers - "Come out" by Steve Reich and "Night music" by Richard Maxfield. "Big Mother..." is a previously unreleased piece. The 3rd (and final) piece on this compilation was made at the San Francisco Tape Music Center in 1965 and was first released in 1977 on the compilation New Music For Electronic And Recorded Media, released on 1750 Arch Records. The 3 pieces on this CD are all live experiments, which at the simplest level use either an array of oscillators and filters, a mixer and one spool of tape feeding a series of (variously set up) stereo tape machines. Long delay lines, pile ups of noise and rich sonorities are the stuff of this music. The third piece also uses samples taken from Pucini's Madame Butterfly. All 3 pieces on this CD are not included on the 12 CD boxset of early electronic music by Oliveros, released by Important Records.

BURROUGHS, WILLIAM S. Curse Go Back LP
Restocked. William Burroughs was in and out of London from the mid-50s to 1974 and for several years quite settled in a flat near Piccadilly. During this latter time he developed and refined the techniques he used for creating cut-ups on tape. Working closely with Ian Sommerville, who helped acquire, and no doubt maintain, the various tape recorders that Burroughs used and abused in these experimental works. The work here is in two sections, which in their original form lasted for over an hour and first appeared in 1998 under the name Electronic Revolution as a free CD with Issue One of the French magazine Crash. The CD was quickly withdrawn with maybe only 100 copies finding their way into circulation. This edition is edited down to 46 minutes and comprises the core of the original recording. It employs the now familiar techniques of random drop-ins and cut-ups of readings. The readings themselves are also cut-ups of words on the page. The first section of the tape uses further processing by means of a second tape recorder. Recorded in Duke Street in 1968, the tape was then passed on to Brion Gysin in Paris where it remained in his archive until 1998. This is the first readily available edition of an hypnotic and meditative recording that examines the hidden power of words. Closer to work of sound poetry than anything literary. The album includes a 12"x12" insert with an essay by Ben Harper and several previously unseen portrait photos of Burroughs, taken by Harriet Crowder in her Hammersmith flat during a drug experiment. The back cover uses another Crowder image - the very next frame after the famous shot that appeared on the cover of the English Bookshop/ESP Call Me Burroughs LP (1965). Pressed at Optimal on transparent vinyl. Edition of 500 (numbered).

HAYDO, SIMON The Illusion of an Alternative Choice LP
Crack shot wiry techno from Stockholm's Simon Haydo, putting his trusted Korg MS-20 through its paces for Peder Mannerfelt Produktion after showcasing the semi-modular synth's myriad permutations on Avian, Hivern Discs, and Studio Barnhus in recent years. Working shades away from Peder Mannerfelt's less-is-more style, Haydo becomes the latest in a line of producers stretching from Suicide through Fad Gadget and Powell to fetishize and utilize Korg's classic, tactile little box for everything from kick drums to melodies and anything between. However, The Illusion of an Alternative Choice would simply be an academic exercise in asceticism if it weren't for the remarkable diversity of sounds Haydo generates from his chosen bit of kit. Like Lorenzo Senni with his Roland JP-8080, or Mark Fell with the Yamaha DX7, Haydo reveals a wealth of variation from the Korg MS-20, reveling in its textured gradients and tweaky integers between the pulsating, viscous morph and off-kilter dissonance of "Let Know" to the search-and-destroy 'ardcore mentasm-style licks of "Not For You?", through the dry, blocky roller "The Go!", to the sharp-cut jack-beat of "Parade Of Unhappy" and unstable cosmic fuss of "Out". In effect, by proving you can create a whole record with lots of variation, but only using one synth, Haydo also cocks a cool snook at those n00b producers with expensive banks of kit who produce the most prosaic, tepid and gridlocked house -- basically proving that it's not what you've got, but how you use it. Edition of 300.

VON TEESE, DITA Dita Von Teese LP
Dita Von Teese sings about the power of seduction and the ecstasy of letting go in an album bearing her name, written and composed by Sébastien Tellier. "I've collaborated with artists I admire that have invited me, such as Monarchy and Die Antwoord," recalls the Michigan native. "But nothing compares to this project with Sébastien Tellier. . . . When we began recording, he offered to let me to write some lyrics, but I preferred the feeling of letting go, of making a Sébastien Tellier record. I had a fantasy about having a modern Brigitte Bardot and Serge Gainsbourg moment. To describe the album is difficult; perhaps it's me with less make-up." Sébastien Tellier has long dreamt of composing for a woman, but was not inspired by any professional singers. "I was looking for someone both beautiful and unique. When I saw Dita dance to a piece of music I had written for her, I had a feeling that her physical presence and her personality were a perfect fit with my music . . . My wife, Amandine de La Richardière, wrote some sexy pop lyrics to balance the melodrama of my tragic vision that love always ends -- in my songs -- in bitterness and regret." Recorded in Sydney, Los Angeles, and Paris, Dita Von Teese owes much to the talents of composer Sébastien Tellier, the singing of Dita Von Teese, and the art of two instrumentalists -- the programmer and keyboard player John Kirby (Solange, Blood Orange, Money Mark) and drummer Daniel Stricker (Midnight Juggernauts) -- who coproduced the album with Sébastien Tellier, under the name of Mind Gamers. Listening to "Sparkling Rain" a futuristic calypso shot through with angels choirs and the syncopated rhythms of marimbas; "Rendez-Vous", a robotic reggae which Grace Jones would not have disdained; or the bewitching "My Lips On Your Lips" and "Bird Of Prey" which, despite their air of inoffensive TLC-like silky ballads, promise a thousand erotic raptures, one notes that women of the night definitely make wonderful muses. Woven with powerful heartbeats, waves of liquid pianos, guitars cracking like whips, Chinese sounding motifs, and synthetic steel drums, Dita Von Teese asks to be lured into its intoxicating wake, as if the singer who had crossed invisible and tormented worlds had found the path leading to divine ecstasy. Pink colored vinyl; Printed inner cardboard sleeve; Gatefold sleeve.

POSTCARDS I'll Be Here In The Morning LP
LP version. Postcards is a dream pop/indie rock band formed in Beirut, Lebanon by four friends in the summer of 2012. After a series of well-received EPs through 2013-2017, I'll Be Here In The Morning is their debut full-length, teaming up once again with producer Fadi Tabbal of Tunefork Studios. Defined by hushed, introspective vocals floating over expansive sonic spaces that shift between harsh noise and dreamy soundscapes. The constant oscillation between the opposite states of mind that the band deals with in Lebanon runs deep within the album both musically and lyrically. The music alternates between repeated cycles of calm and unrest, anger and surrender, simplicity and intricacy as Julia Sabra -- the band's singer and lyricist -- tackles this recurrent theme of duality. The songs see her struggle with feelings of sadness, indifference, deception, femininity, and empowerment. The end result is the most sincere and personal project the quartet has produced so far. "The feelings Postcards project live are a true representation of life here, a city of youth, love and life, with an underlying, unspoken sense of dejection and gloom" --Get Out Blog Lebanon.

BLACK FLOWER Intermediate State 10"
Musicians make albums. But in this case it's different. The four tracks on this ten-inch release were created in between. It's an intermediate piece that sits between two albums, reflecting on a series of special moments and special evolutions of Black Flower. The inspiration came from Salvador Dali's creative dreaming ritual. With a pair of scissors in his hand, he sat back, closed his eyes and slid into sleep. The moment his body and mind enter deep sleep, the scissors dropped and waked him up. Dali then started painting using the inspiration he gathered from his dreams. These paintings can be considered the result of an intermediate state between consciousness and subconsciousness, a zone between being awake and sleeping. Black Flower has derived four dream-tracks from their individual intermediate state, materialized into microscopic grooves on a black vinyl disc. "Almaz" occurred as the first dream. It became Black Flower's very first cover song. An Ethiopian traditional, famous thanks to legendary singer Mahmoud Ahmed. Immediately, this dreamy track pulls you deeply into the intermediate state. "Maqam Tizita Saba" was a vision about an unexpected connection between the Arabian and the Ethiopian world. Black Flower utilized an extended musical scale, beginning with the peaceful, consonant Ethiopian Titzia, and fused it with the upper structure of the dissonant Arabic Saba scale. In the "Good Side Of Bad", Black Flower commemorated its recent collaboration with Dijf Sanders's latest album, Java (WERF 150LP, 2018), which is a groovy patchwork between electronics and his field recordings in Indonesia. Samples from this part of the world pass by just like that. No distance is too big in the intermediate state. "Fly High Oh My" happened just before the scissors fell back on the ground. Strong energy propelling high into the ecstatic sky. Full color tip-on sleeve.

Alien intervention solves everything. Things from other planets are a sustainable reason to many unanswerable questions and, across the music industry in the late '50s and early '60s, in the wake of a slew of space-based exploitation movies, a series of 45s and suitably unearthly concept albums emerged to capitalize on this burgeoning, bizarre and mysterious idea. Everyone was viewing far off planets with wonder, amazement and the occasional well-directed sound effect. No-one really knew what aliens could do, so the potential for music to accompany whatever they did was limitless. Over 50 years after these sides were released in a fit of futuristic creativity, we're still asking about the potential of water on Mars, puzzling of the rings of Saturn and wondering if anything really did happen at Roswell. UNIVERS ZERO Heresie LP
Repressed; Sub Rosa present a reissue of Univers Zero's second album Heresie, originally released in 1979. 2010 remixed version (Cuneiform Records). A classic of chamber rock music, featuring heavy use of dissonance and dark, brooding, and extremely complex melodies. Comes on limited edition orange and gold vinyl; Includes insert; 380 gram sleeve."This music on this LP might have little to do with rock, and might also be a massive downer, but the quality of the writing and playing is extremely high. Michel Berckmans' solo work on oboe and bassoon work is magnificent, and Patrick Hanappier's string playing (violin and viola) also demonstrates the precision of a trained classical musician, along with demonic avant-garde scraping and howling on 'Jack The Ripper.' Best of all, Univers Zero never cheapens the effect of the music with any of the stock cartoon licks which are associated with the gothic genre today. Group members sound deadly serious about what they're doing, which might call their sanity into question, but which makes for an incredibly powerful listening experience. In fact, Heresie is a stunning one-of-a-kind item that has never been duplicated by anyone -- including Univers Zero." --William Tilland, AllMusic

TOOP + PAUL BURWELL, DAVID Suttle Sculpture LP
Never before released recordings from Logos Foundation live sessions with David Toop and Paul Burwell in Brussels, on May 7, 1977. David Toop on the recordings: "When Paul Burwell and I started playing together just after Christmas, 1969, we found ourselves wrestling with a new language of sound, listening, actions, objects and space. At first it was music. We studied in the improvisation classes given by John Stevens at Ealing College in 1971-2, and also took classes in African music at London's Africa Centre. Most of the musicians lasted only one or two sessions so we resigned ourselves to being a duo and worked out an approach to free improvisation that expanded from simple structures and instrument combinations. Decomposition, we called it. We had worked intensively together, searching for techniques through which to decondition ourselves from orthodoxies, devising exercises in listening and instrument building, studying esoteric organology, bioacoustics, environmental sound, raw musics and anthropology. We were both fascinated by phenomena like diffraction, propulsion, resonance, projection, masking and heterodyning, and by shamanism, the symbolically grounded agency of shamanic drums, animal-becoming and noisy costume, the shaman's capacity to enliven quotidian space with the commotion of discarnate audible entities from the spirit world. This recording is one of the very few that conveys anything of what we were about." Personnel: Paul Burwell - percussion, whistles; David Toop - flutes, home-made reeds, whistle.Logos Foundation in Belgium is Flanders's unique professional organization for the promotion of new music and audio-related arts by means of new music production, concerts, performances, composition, technological research, and other activities related to contemporary music. MONOCHROME SET, THE Maisieworld LP+CD
LP version. Includes CD. At the end of the '70s, The Monochrome Set were part of the first wave of "post punk" bands. Right from the beginning, the band earned a solid reputation as purveyors of fine pop, gaining praise from '80s contemporaries such as Morrissey and Edwyn Collins. Importantly, in later years this praise has continued with artists such as Franz Ferdinand, The Divine Comedy, and Graham Coxon, all citing the band as a key influence on their own work. The Monochrome Set sound has often been described as "timeless", and that alone explains why, over the years, the band has continued gaining admirers. Maisieworld is distilled from the pungent flowers of artistic mischief and represents the acme of sonic consummation. LP version includes CD.Congratulations on owning this fine quality product. Maisieworld is distilled from the pungent flowers of artistic mischief and represents the acme of sonic consummation. Welcome to Maisieworld! Your host, Maisie, will guide you through a succession of songs that highlight the volatile, capricious and ultimately unstable nature of The Monochrome Set. New doors lead into hitherto unexplored corridors, where saxophones, trombones, and trumpets claw at you from the Harlem-brownstone walls which pulsate with the ceaseless beating of animal skins. Echoes from a bygone era of expertise race around you as you careen down these sewers of sound, lead guitar solos leap with rusty scimitars, strange organs slither over you on the damp roof, a growling bass snaps at your ankles, a misshapen banjo scuttles across your path, and, all the while, barbarians shake the seed-filled skulls of the dead. Playful vocals sing of your frail organic nature, the sad dreams and hopes that you entertain, and the dismal decisions you make. Scenes of a different imagination tear you like brittle canvas and rearrange your portrait into another's fantasy. Upon your exit from Maisieworld, you will be pleasantly surprised to find that your vessel is now filled with abnormal thoughts. Caution: May contain nuts. And bolts.

BNJMN Black Coast EP 12"
Finishing off 2017 in a flurry, the second release of the newly minted Tiercel label by UK born, Berlin-based BNJMN sees the producer venture into murkier, deeper waters. Black Coast EP is rich in texture, melodically deep, and rhythmically unforgiving. Disorienting the senses, each track is a journey through dark swamps, eerie subterranean realms, and hazy sound spaces. Unrelenting and unforgiving, all three tracks cater to those unafraid to venture into the dark unknown. Artwork by Johannes Arolt. Mastered by Neel at Enisslab.

KENNEDY, INIGO Magma/Mantle 12"
Token mainstay Inigo Kennedy had no fewer than three collaborative tracks on Momentum, the release put together to celebrate ten years of the label's output (TOKEN 078CD/LP, 2017). The similarities between "Magma" and "Mantle" are almost as striking as their individual qualities. "Magma", with a refreshingly candid lead, is soaked in reverb and sprawling with variations that gradually increase in complexity, carried by diffused sub-harmonic pads. "Mantle" is more percussion focused. Much of its movement is dictated by a pitch-bent woodiness that meanders in stereo while the composition rumbles on and opens up to a powerful crescendo.

LAVANDA, ASHTAR Unsolved Mysteries 12"
In 2014, Ultramajic's Jimmy Edgar received information about an East Detroit storage unit auction containing vintage recording equipment and historical items of Detroit Techno descent. Ultramajic came into the possession of over 100 DAT and 1/4" reel tapes. One box contained meticulously dated tapes from 1995-1998 with sharpie inscription "ASHTAR LAVANDA". Lo and behold a hidden treasure of Detroit electro. After nearly two years, the label managed to connect with Ashtar Lavanda. With this release and upcoming archives of his music, he will be known as one of the true pioneers in late '90s Detroit electro.

JOHNSON, CHUCK Balsams LP
Repressed. "Chuck Johnson's pedal steel guitar debut delivers a group of pieces for ambient meditation. Recorded in a single two-week session during late 2015, and subsequently arranged/constructed/treated in the studio in spring of 2016, Balsams is awash in layers of tonal perfection. The album constantly evolves while maintaining a unified approach across both sides. Balsams is a record that lives outside genre and time, one that continues to develop with each successive deep listen. A unique expansion in the VDSQ catalog, Balsams is an album created in the hopes of providing solace and regenerative energies for many years to come."

HRTL Sugarlump EP 12"
Darko Esser's Wolfskuil Limited kicks off 2018 with Sugarlump EP by the Czech artist HRTL. Sugarlump EP showcases HRTL's solid producer skills, flawless taste, and an obvious passion for classic Detroit house sound. "Sugarlump" opens with moody pads, evolving in dynamic rhythms progression and deep atmospheres. "Someone Stole Your Sweetroll" follows with low resonating bass drums and beautiful melancholic strings followed by "Dental Trauma" that intensifies this flow with a more pronounced acidic sound. "LOD" develops slowly with uplifting break beats overflew by celestial arpeggios, ending the journey with a charming touch.
