ISOLATING Perennial LP
Isolating is the industrial solo alter ego of London-based, Stephen Hindman, one half of The Golden FIlter. Coming off of their moody 2020 debut EP on Optimo Music, Isolating will release an analog, lo-fi, gritty full-length LP called Perennial on their own 4GN3S label. Disquieting and dystopian, the album shifts from the beatless drone of "Mortification" to the IDM inspired electro in "Sacrament", each track melding into each other with an unsettling anxiety. The LP mirrors the concepts behind The Perennial Philosophy (1945) by Aldous Huxley. Solitarily created in London room on a modular system, Perennial tackles the perspective in spirituality that views all of the world's religions as sharing a single, metaphysical origin, with a nod to the Lucretius quote; "To such heights of evil are men driven by religion." The album photography of Stephen is by Agnes Haus.

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE Bravery, Repetition And Noise LP
2020 repress; black vinyl. LP version. Originally released in 2001. Bravery, Repetition and Noise is a dark, dreamy album, rich in atmosphere, layered in waves of sound. The album's antecedents are clear, inspired by psychedelia as they were by punk's nihilism, pulling both strands into a doom-laden, experimental sound quite distinct from anything that had come before or since. Brian Jonestown Massacre uses this as their touchstone, lovingly re-creating the moods and atmospheres of the past.

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE Tepid Peppermint Wonderland Volume 1 2LP
2020 repress. Pressed on 180 gram black vinyl and housed in a gatefold sleeve. Remastered for a vinyl release. This 15-track compilation spans the years 1995-2004, featuring key tracks from all their albums as well as live recordings and many unreleased tracks. The Brian Jonestown Massacre is a psychedelic rock band originally from San Francisco, California, led by guitarist/singer Anton Newcombe. Since 1995 The Brian Jonestown Massacre has released numerous albums, first for Bomp! Records, the label which gave them their start, and later for TVT and Tee Pee. BJM has been essential in the development of the modern U.S. garage scene, and many L.A. and SF musicians got their start playing with Newcombe, including Peter Hayes of The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Originally Newcombe was heavily influenced by The Rolling Stones' psychedelic phase -- the name comes from Stones guitarist Brian Jones combined with a reference to cult leader Jim Jones, but his work in the 2000s has expanded into aesthetic dimensions approximating the UK shoegazing genre of the 1990s, and incorporates influences from world music, especially Middle Eastern and Brazilian music.

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE The Brian Jonestown Massacre LP
2020 repress; LP version. 180 gram, clear vinyl; superb deluxe packaging. The Brian Jonestown Massacre burst into 2019 with the release of their 18th full-length album, just seven months after their last one, Something Else (AUK 043CD/LP). The self-titled, nine-track album is released on Anton Newcombe's A Recordings, and it was recorded and produced at Anton's Cobra Studio in Berlin. The album was originally going to be released in September of 2018, but due to a hugely successful global tour -- taking in USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Europe -- the release was delayed. Recorded in early 2018, the album features Sara Neidorf on drums, Heike Marie Radeker (LeVent) on bass, Hakon Adalsteinsson (BJM, Third Sound, Gunman, Holy Ghost) on guitar, and Anton Newcombe on multiple instruments. Also making a guest vocal appearance on "Tombes Oubliées" is Rike Bienert who has sung on previous BJM albums. The band performed songs from the album throughout the European leg of the 2018 tour. Anton Newcombe has been a very busy man over the past few years, having released four critically-acclaimed Brian Jonestown Massacre albums and an EP, one soundtrack album, and two albums with Tess Parks. All releases were fully recorded and produced at Anton's studio. The Brian Jonestown Massacre track "Bon Bon" was used in the 2015 Palm D'Or winner Dheepan. Anton penned the soundtrack for Moon Dogs, a film directed by multi-BAFTA nominated Philip John (Svengali, Downton Abbey, Being Human).

SOLLMANN, PHILLIP Monophonie 2LP
Repressed; Double LP version. Following 2019's New Atlantis album under his experimental techno alias Efdemin, Phillip Sollmann's Monophonie is a project dedicated to uniting different strands of utopian music. His approach: combining and recontextualizing rare historical instruments of sonic research of Hermann von Helmholtz (19th century) with the self-designed, microtonal instruments of Harry Partch and metal sound sculptures of Harry Bertoia. The result is a psychedelic investigation into just intonation -- alternative tuning systems that create unique sets of harmonics not found in conventional scales. Monophonie recasts these sounds into new rhythmic environments where epic kosmische, polyrhythms, acoustic techno, and microtonal glow are interwoven into a rare music. Over nine tracks, the album explores multiple forms of minimalism, from unwavering repetition to pared-down chords and sparse sonic environments. But it also seeks to expand the sound spectrum of Partch's custom built organs and melodic percussion instruments as well as Bertoia's sonambient singing metal rods into an atmospheric otherworldliness. Monophonie was first composed in 2016 and premiered at Berlin's Volksbühne theatre in 2017, before it went on to the renowned Ruhrtriennale and Kampnagel in Hamburg. It was performed by one of Germany's premier neue musik collectives Ensemble Musikfabrik together with Sollmann himself on von Helmholtz's original double siren, with set design by Michael Kleine and wardrobe by Peter Kisur of Honeysuckle Company.

RADIGUE, ELIANE Feedback Works 1969-1970 LP
2020 repress. Alga Marghen very proudly presents a remastered version of the complete documentation of Eliane Radigue sound installations from 1969-1970, including the broad tectonic vibrations of "Omnht," the celestial voices of "Usral," the massive chant of "Stress Osaka," and more -- the works of this artist's feedback period finally revealed. It is amazing that Radigue could build such formidably organic sonic edifices in her home studio with the primitive machines given to her by Pierre Henry: three tape recorders, a mixing board, an amplifier, two loudspeakers and a microphone. Eliane previously worked for Henry at the Studio d'Essai of the R.T.F. from 1955 to 1957, after having met Pierre Schaeffer almost by chance, who invited her to learn the techniques of musique concrète. Created 10 years after her Studio d'Essai experience, the feedback works of Eliane Radigue immediately take a new direction from the explorations of musique concrète. Her adventure intuitively goes towards flux, towards contemplative stasis -- a music of continuous sounds, of apparently simple structures, which permits the revelations and expansion of rich acoustic phenomena. It is as if her musical work was in some way a martial art -- as if she meditated for 10 years before striking the first blow, with impressive precision. This is the context in which Eliane composed "Omnht" in 1970 for the architectonic spaces of the visual artist Tania Mouraud titled "One More Night," presented at the Gallery of the Rive Gauche in Paris; "Usral" (the title comes from a phonetic compression of ultrasounds slowed-down, in French "ultra-sons ralentis") is one of the first works by Eliane Radigue to be given in public as a sound environment for a sculpture by Marc Halpern in the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs at the Grand Palais of Paris in 1969; "Stress-Osaka" was conceived when the artist was invited to create a sonic environment for the International Fair in Osaka in 1970. There is no doubt that Eliane Radigue's vocabulary is based on observing and entering into dialog with the fundamental behavior of sounds: pulsing, beating, sustained, very light -- a subtle and delicate evolution. When she moved from feedback sounds to the ARP synthesizer, she naturally continued the same music, a continuity where the original use of feedback sounds stands out for its cruder and more savage inner character. One could say that somehow it's the very texture of the sounds, which leads the form of her compositions. Includes a 16-page LP-size booklet with original photos, scores and liner notes.

RADIGUE, ELIANE Vice-Versa, Etc... LP
2020 repress. Alga Marghen very proudly presents a remastered version of Vice-Versa, Etc..., an LP originally included in the first 400 copies of Eliane Radigue's Feedback Works 2LP. Vice-Versa, Etc... was originally a small handmade box, signed and numbered and released on the occasion of a show at Lara Vincy's gallery in 1970. The box contained a reel of magnetic tape and the instructions for use. It indicates that all playback speeds are possible, forward or backward, as well as any combination of two channels, on several recorders, ad libitum. This LP presents two versions done by Emmanuel Hoelterbach following the indications of Eliane Radigue to the letter, respecting her composition methods. There is no doubt that Eliane Radigue's vocabulary is based on observing and entering into dialog with the fundamental behavior of sounds: pulsing, beating, sustained, very light, a subtle and delicate evolution. When she moved from feedback sounds to the ARP synthesizer, she naturally continued the same music -- a continuity where the original use of feedback sounds stands out for its cruder and more savage inner character. One could say that somehow it's the very texture of the sounds, which leads the form of her compositions. At the same time, this approach favors an intense sensuality in the listening.

ASHLEY, ROBERT The Wolfman CD
2020 restock. Alga Marghen presents a 2015 remastered CD edition of its 2003 CD The Wolfman, a collection of pieces that introduce the listener to the most extreme experimental side of American composer Robert Ashley. Presented in digipak with 12-page booklet including liner notes written by the composer and the complete score of "The Wolfman," first issued in Source magazine. The program starts with "The Fox" (1957), Ashley's first electronic work, which displays his nascent electronic music theater style. Dark atmospheres and primitive tape collage techniques recorded at home, mixing the electronic tape and the voice in a single live pass. "The Wolfman" was composed in early 1964 and first performed at Charlotte Moorman's 1964 second Annual Avant Garde Festival of New York. The piece immediately won a considerable reputation as a threat to the listener's health. For the occasion, instigated by Morton Feldman, Ashley composed a piece of tape music, "The Wolfman Tape," to be played along with the vocal performance of "The Wolfman." The tape composition, played out of the same loudspeakers as the voice and the feedback (the main sound source for this composition), filled in the ongoing performance sound and transformed the performance into an elaborate version of drone under the influence of electronics. For the performance of "The Wolfman" recorded here, produced at the University of California, Davis, Ashley used a 1960 tape composition titled "The 4th of July." That composition changes gradually from a parabolic-microphone documentation of a backyard party into a layering of tape loops and tape-head feedback. "The Wolfman Tape" (1964) is, as described above, a tape composition made for a short performance of "The Wolfman." It uses tape-speed manipulation and mixes of many layers of found sounds, both from AM radio and from recordings made using different kinds of microphones. "The Bottleman" was composed in 1960 as music for an experimental film by George Manupelli. The 40-minute version presented here involves contact microphones on a surface that holds a loudspeaker some six feet away. The loudspeaker is broadcasting open-circuit hum (at the American standard of approximately 60 hertz). That pitch is raised slightly through tape manipulation and the result is mixed with vocal sounds and other found sounds played back at various tape speeds.

MALVERN BRUME Tendrils LP
Alter present Tendrils, the first LP release from London based artist and musician Malvern Brume. After gathering some hushed praise from the UK underground for a couple of excellent cassette releases and strong local live performances, Tendrils is the first definitive document of the Malvern Brume sound world. His instrumentation and sound sources would be considered familiar staples in the world of "experimental" music, but Rory Salter does an admirable job of making them his own. Comprised of eight pieces, this is electronic music at its core but a kind that sounds as if it's being played through fog. Like spores growing on a damp surface. Densely composed and thick with an almost asphyxiating atmosphere -- even during the record's more minimal moments -- track titles like "Caught In The Exhaust Trails" and "Sunk Into Plastics" only heighten the tone further. Salter was originally born in the countryside and since relocated to London, a place he finds "over stimulating in every sense." Much of Tendrils could be taken as a response to the city and a means of equating the two. Camberwell is listed as the location for composition, but field recordings are attributed to rural landmarks. The Rollright Stones on the Oxfordshire/Warwickshire border and Seven Sisters Cliffs by the English Channel are two in case, but despite their picturesque origins Salter renders them into abstract clatter. As if dubbed from the private tape archive of an old eccentric. In addition, synthesized electronic tones hum and buzz, occasionally giving away to strange, slurring sequences that sound like lost transmissions from the radiophonic workshop. Despite the nod to this electronic music institution, it's lacking the sincere level of esteem that can turn one into a heritage act. There is a strangeness and distant other worldliness to the music that feels unselfconscious and keeps Malvern Brume from being easy to define by contemporary terms. Salter says the album is defined by movement and the environments that have inspired him over the years. In his own words, "each of these tracks is inspired by a journey or moving through a space, an audible A to B." With that in mind, Tendrils is perfect music for solitary inner-city marshland walks and urban bike rides to forgotten local suburbs.

KLEIN, NICK No Shortage of Rope LP
What happens when you arrive to a party and everyone is leaving as you are walking in? If a bass drum booms in the woods but no one is around to hear it, does it even boom at all? Can you build a mansion with playing cards? Nick Klein returns to Alter with the cryptically biographical No Shortage of Rope, his third release for the label and significantly, potentially his first full-length album. Consisting of seven tracks, No Shortage of Rope is a consolidated collection of recordings Klein made after leaving his long-term base of NYC to become a full-time resident of Den Haag, Netherlands. Using some newfound free time post-move, Klein wanted to approach his working process in the studio a little differently to create something long form. Describing his time in the studio, Klein says it was "the most hermetic studio endeavor I have ever undertaken." It certainly seems that Klein harnessed this period of productivity to make the most of what his music could offer as No Shortage of Rope is the man in his most pointedly pure form. As an artist Klein has followed his own path around the fringes of the contemporary American underground without much worry of where he may end up as a result. This has led the majority of his work to be best contextualized by the rough beat-music associated with artists like Beau Wanzer, Shane English, or Container and the celebratory unpretentious world of noise. Opening track "Sitting In Glass" sets an irreverent foundation with gratuitous chainsaw-like synth noise that sucks the air immediately out of the room. The subsequent tracks are more or less Klein back at the office in beat-based terrain, but with some noticeable differences. The kicks are harder and percussive elements have been chosen and rendered with sharp detail, taking up more space and disguising how minimal these pieces are despite their bombastic delivery. The biggest surprise comes in the final track "French-Property.com," a book-ending piece of percussion-less glacial electronics and maybe the most expansive thing Klein has made to date. Regardless of Klein's intentions regarding the club, it couldn't have been too far from his mind purely for the reason that No Shortage of Rope just bangs like fuck for the most part. This is hard rhythmic electronic music built for basements and the record-boxes of adventurous DJs, just very much made on his own terms. Color LP.

FUZZY DUCK Fuzzy Duck LP
Be With Records present a reissue of Fuzzy Duck's self-titled album, originally released in 1971. A memorable name with an outstanding cover, Fuzzy Duck is a classic slice of underground London art rock and melodic psychedelia. Originally released on MAM in 1971, it's truly a musical force of infectious riffs and fiery solos, sharp tempo changes, a tight rhythm section, and heavy, Hammond-drenched grooves. With echoes of Spencer Davis Group, early Grand Funk, and Vanilla Fudge, it comes on like a heavier Soft Machine or Caravan. No wonder Fuzzy Duck's cult appeal has endured. The album features Mick Hawksworth (Five Day Week Straw People, Andromeda) on bass, acoustic 12-string, electric cello, and some of the vocal duties, and also Roy "Daze" Sharland (Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Spice) on organ and electric piano. Accompanying those two were Paul Francis on drums and percussion, and Grahame White on guitars and the rest of the vocals. Originally released in an edition of 500, Fuzzy Duck became legendary all over the world through a holy trinity of scarcity, personnel, and its sheer brilliance. The album kicks off with a heavy, bass-fueled, Hammond rocker titled "Time Will Be Your Doctor". This is pure hard-edged blues rock, brilliantly played. Its drum break intro was sampled by DJ Premier for Gang Starr's "Mostly Tha Voice" on 1994's legendary Hard To Earn. At nearly seven minutes long, "Mrs. Prout" follows incorporating more psych-leaning guitar and drawn-out keyboards à la Ray Manzarek. "Just Look Around You" is propulsive folk-rock with a soaring, proto power-pop chorus, backed by frenetic organ and heavy bass. Back comes the heavy, strung-out psych to both close out side one with "Afternoon Out" and kick off side two with "More Than I Am". "Country Boy" quenches the thirst for rhythm and melody, only the lyrics and vibe are wonderfully creepy. The groove suddenly cuts and drops into a more sinister tempo before the band pick up speed and toss you back again into the opening jam, this time with organ. The final, fully fleshed out track is the majestic "In Our Time", which oscillates between endless organ-driven boogie and heavenly, genuinely moving vocals. Infamous instrumental cut "A Word from Big D" rounds out the album. Yes, that's the band jamming with duck quack sound effects accompanying the music. Mastered by Simon Francis; cut by Pete Norman. Remastered from the original analog tapes.

MAJIKA, LINDA "BABE" Don't Treat Me So Bad LP
Be With Records present a reissue of Linda "Babe" Majika's Don't Treat Me So Bad, originally released in 1988. Linda "Babe" Majika's insanely brilliant Don't Treat Me So Bad is a tight six tracks of blistering electro-flavored bubblegum and synth-drizzled solar-powered machine-funk. Once of the Hot Soul Singers, Don't Treat Me So Bad was Linda's debut LP as a solo artist. It was produced by Ace Mbuyisa of boogie-funk maestros Freeway and was originally released on Umkhonto Records in South Africa in 1988. The enormous "Let's Make A Deal" is probably the best-known track here, and it's definitely could be considered the best. Linda's vocals drip with attitude over warm, breezy synths and an urgent, edgy electro beat to create a timeless club-ready bomb that sounds as fresh as ever. But the rest of the album is far from filler. Opening track "Kunzima (Tabalaza Mjita)" instantly brings the sunshine vibes, strutting out the gate with that unmistakable South African steppers groove. It's a deceptively simple song, with multiple instrumental elements arriving and taking leave with admirable restraint. "It's Our Home" is a powerful showcase for Linda's vocals, enhanced by some life-affirming call-and-response backing vocals throughout. In fact, they're a joyous presence on the whole album. The insistent pipes and swirling, bubbling synths of title track "Don't Treat Me So Bad" follow. A spacious proto-piano house banger that closes out the first side in phenomenal fashion. Arriving as track two on the second side, "Unga B'Omthemba Umuntu" has the unenviable task of following the huge "Let's Make A Deal". It does the job with class, bringing the tempo down to a mid-paced tropical bounce with lilting harmonies and welcome traces of hi-life guitar. Wonderful stuff. "Playboy" is another unbeatable head-nod groover rounds out the set wonderfully. That bassline high in the mix is to die for, and the chorus will make any dancefloor smile. Mastered by Simon Francis. The memorable cover art, in which Linda appears straight out of the 1950s with her polka dot skirt and butter-wouldn't-melt pose, has been faithfully restored. Don't Treat Me So Bad is the work of one badass woman who can hold her own, and then some. Remastered from the original tapes.

WHITE HEAVEN Out LP
Repressed. White Heaven's debut album Out is one of the greatest psychedelic rock albums ever recorded. First released in 1991 by Tokyo's P.S.F. Records and pressed in an edition of 500 copies the original LP has become a holy grail in underground circles, with only a scant few copies ever making it outside of Japan. Built on the chemistry between You Ishihara's lysergic lyricism and the blistering leads of one of Japan's undisputed guitar gods Michio Kurihara, Out is an absolute classic. It is one of the few albums to successfully join a deep love of classic rock n' roll with the rapturous energy of punk and openness of the avant-garde. Each song creates its own world, raising dynamic structures that defy categorization. Meticulously re-mastered by the artists this new edition is the album in its clearest, most powerful form. Cut at the legendary Bernie Grundman studios and pressed at RTI it is now available on vinyl for the first time in almost 30 years. Black Editions presents Out in its definitive edition. Deluxe LP edition, Heavy tip-on jacket and tri-panel insert printed on black paper with metallic gold ink. Vinyl mastering by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman, high quality pressing at RTI."What happens if you want to make a sound like Eric Clapton on 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps,' or Ritchie Blackmore on Made in Japan -- two early influences Kurihara mentions in particular -- but you've never been in a recording studio before? What happens if you want to sing like Marc Bolan or Robert Plant -- or even Lou Reed and Tom Verlaine -- but you've never been on a stage before? Listen to what happened on Out: a wide knowledge and love of classic rock sounds fused to a freedom of expression based not only on punk, but on avant-garde experimentalism. It isn't that these young players had chops like that at the time. But neither did they need them to hit heightened moments of what I can only describe as rock rapture." --Damon Krukowski

ISHIBASHI, EIKO Hyakki Yagyo LP
Black Truffle announce a new solo album by Eiko Ishibashi, her first for the label, following on from the duo recording Ichida alongside bassist Darin Gray (BT 039LP, 2018). Hyakki Yagy? (Night Parade of One Hundred Demons) was produced for the "Japan Supernatural" exhibition at The Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney focusing on ghost stories and folklore from the Edo period onwards. As with The Dream My Bones Dream (Drag City, 2018), the album is a response to troubling questions about Japanese history, and the influence of the past upon the present, but finds Ishibashi shifting further away from her earlier piano-led songwriting and showing a deepening interest in electronics and audio collaging. The two side-long parts of Hyakki Yagy? feature layered synthesizers, acoustic instrumentation, recited verse, and field recordings, at times densely mixed but always with a subtle interplay of changing elements. The influence of European and American forerunners as diverse as Alvin Curran, David Behrman, and Strafe Für Rebellion can be traced, yet at the same time Ishibashi evokes the flute and string sounds associated with Japanese storytelling, and draws directly on the subversive literary tradition of Kyoka ("mad poetry") with a verse by the 15th-century poet Ikky? S?jun repeated throughout the album. Revisiting what has gone before, re-thinking what is possible musically, as a way of articulating what else might be possible in the future. As Ishibashi's liner notes make clear, the album reflects an attention to persistent dangers, myths and evasions in Japanese culture -- as well as the lurking uncertainties that might threaten positive change. This would seem to be manifested in the emerging melodies soon met by dissonance, erratic collisions, and near silence, as well as the eerie manipulation of the double-tracked vocals. Ishibashi's underlying concerns ring true more widely of course. Hyakki Yagy? is a work of multiplicities, and mystery, a landscape where nothing is as it seems at first, and everything is vulnerable to sudden violent interruptions. The album was produced with regular collaborators Jim O'Rourke (double bass) and Joe Talia (percussion), and features dancer and choreographer Ryuichi Fujimura performing Ikky?'s satirical tanka. O'Rourke's immersive mix creates a three-dimensional effect, with Ishibashi's various sound sources enmeshing and interacting in captivating ways. White vinyl; inner sleeve featuring artist portrait and liner notes from Eiko Ishibashi. Cover and label design by Shuhei Abe. Back cover design by Lasse Marhaug. Mixed and mastered by Jim O'Rourke.

BELLOWS Undercurrent LP
Black Truffle announce Undercurrent, the new LP from the long-running Milanese duo of Giuseppe Ielasi and Nicola Ratti. Following on from high-profile releases on Boomkat Editions and Shelter Press ((SHELTER 080LP, 2017) in the last few years, the eight untitled pieces making up Undercurrent continue the pair's hypnotic and disorientating practice of improvisation based on tape loops. Often sitting halfway between electro-acoustic technique and beat-based production, the music of Bellows obliquely recalls aspects of hip-hop, dub, and techno while skewing their rhythmic foundations. While consistent with the distinctive language the duo has developed over the last decade, Undercurrent moves away from the explicit references made to club music in their recent releases. It presents a suite of pieces that are markedly more minimal, at times reminiscent in their haunted introspection of the legendary Tolerance records on Vanity Records. The pieces here often dwell for minutes at a time on single repeating tones, reverberating like distant bells in desolate landscapes of looped tape hiss. Where previous releases were primarily based on samples, Undercurrent uses recordings of the duo playing various instruments (guitar, drums, synthesizer) cut into tape loops and then used as the bases for song-length tracks, each of which establishes a central repeating motif while also opening up on close listening to reveal multitudes of improvised detail and subtle shifts in tone, texture, and tempo. Beginning with the mournful sliding tones and obscured fragments of field recordings on the opening track, the album moves from lush synth pads to super-minimal pings and haunted drone. On "6" and "7", spacious, hanging guitar figures give the music an elegiac quality recalling the work of Dean Roberts and Ielasi's own earlier guitar-based music (such as the classic Gesine (HAPNA 021CD), released on Häpna in 2005). The record subtly builds to its final track, which works the barest of elements -- a slowed-tone loop of steel drums, a distant whistle, beeping electronics -- into a piece somehow imbued with a quiet grandeur, a fitting conclusion to a record that, like all of the duo's work, is both sonically exploratory and immediately accessible.

ALLIEN, ELLEN Auraa 2LP
Double LP version. Ellen Allien emits a powerful Auraa on a new longplayer. Ellen Allien -- one of Berlin's most ardent techno ambassadors -- proudly unveils her latest full-length expedition into the realms of underground electronica. Brimming with creative energy, Ellen's new album Auraa follows her 2019 release Alientronic (BPX 001CD/LP), and is her third album in three years. Raw, emotive, and capable of transporting you from reality to an electro-fied fantasy, Aurra explores the notion of unseen energies controlling our planet. Beginning with the faintest hint of trance euphoria on the downtempo "Hello Planet Earth (Breath Mix)", the album soon moves into more bumpin' territory with "In Music I Trust" -- Ellen's signature use of vocals-as-melody entrancing the listener. "Walking In The Dark" takes things up a notch further with jabbing percussion and mesmerizing atmospherics, followed by "Confusion", a masterclass in heady hypnotic composition. "Human" is a deeply affecting beatless segue with its drone-esque soundscape. "True Romantics" taps into your emotional center utilizing hard beats and wistful synth lines. Lastly, "Traum" ("Dream" in English) takes you out of your body and into the infinite realm of vibration, as waves of beautifully composed pads and bubbling analog bass encourages you to transcend into the next astral plane.

VESTALS Holy Origin LP
Vestals is the avatar of Los Angeles based artist Lisa McGee, who's debut album Forever Falling Toward the Sky was released by Root Strata in 2012. She has also discreetly operated in US underground music for the last decade as a member of the dream-drone duo Higuma with Evan Caminiti, while making vocal contributions to acclaimed albums by Jefre Cantu-Ledesma and Sarah Davachi. McGee is the sole producer and performer on her sophomore effort, Holy Origin. Since her last offering she has evolved her sound and process, placing a new emphasis on electronic processing, carving out negative space where slow burning rhythms and spectral melodies ebb and flow. Her songcraft is built on the foundations of atmosphere and experimentation that have defined her collaborative outings, but here she has meticulously built up her arrangements into a fully fleshed-out vision of luminous dub informed avant-dream-pop. Sinuous vocals and desolate guitars are rendered in crisp 3D, swallowed by viscera rattling bass and sizzling clouds of synthesizers. Hypnotic melodies and shimmering harmonies nestle within disorienting digital manipulations, conjuring a boundless, smoky twilight. Passages hover and undulate, sustained in trance states before crashing down into lush chorales that comfortably dwell in the space between euphoria and heartache. Fusing memoir with contemplative inquiry, McGee traces the blurred boundaries between the self, the other and the world, capturing various states of desire-ambivalence and surrender. Each track is a meditation on the tension between opposing forces: the ideal and the real, the essential and the cultivated, the erotic and the ascetic. Through the exploration of these dialectics, Holy Origin unfolds as a darkly sublime reverie. Includes download code; edition of 300.

ELLIS/MUNK ENSEMBLE San Diego Sessions CD
There's really no other place like San Diego. The weather's balmy all year, there's 70 miles of the finest coastline California has to offer, it has one of the most ethnically diverse populations in the US and -- most importantly -- it's currently the epicenter for heavy psychedelic rock. Bands such as Earthless, Astra, and Radio Moscow have paved the way for an astounding number of bands, creating a tight knit community of musicians. On this session Denmark's Jonas Munk (Causa Sui) joins forces with San Diego native Brian Ellis (who's not only a prime mover in the psychedelic scene, but has also been active in California's jazz and funk circuits for several years), and an assemblage of prime musicians from the area, including members of Astra, Psicomagia, Monarch, Radio Moscow, and Sacri Monti. The result is an intoxicating brew that's hard to put a label on. Fueled by the furious drumming of Paul Marrone, and led by Jonas Munk's fuzzy lead guitar and the multicolored keys of Brian Ellis, there's an unmoored, floating quality to the music the large ensemble was creating at these sessions. It's the kind of record you can put on and just let it wash over you. The closest references would be Miles Davis circa Bitches Brew (1970), Hendrix at Woodstock, or perhaps Can at their most blazing and levitational. The music flows like an electric river of vintage keys, percussion, and fuzz guitars. And it's glowing with life. Art by Alan Forbes. Liner notes by Jonas Munk.

SHIPP TRIO, MATTHEW The Unidentifiable CD
Downbeat calls Matthew Shipp "an elder statesman on the free-jazz scene." Perhaps it is odd in a way to think of someone so energetic and prolific as "elder," or so outspoken as "statesman," yet Downbeat (Bill Milkowski) is right. Shipp turns 60 this December. When he speaks, people listen (the old E.F. Hutton commercials come to mind). With Andrew Hill, Mal Waldron, Cecil Taylor, Horace Tapscott, Randy Weston, and McCoy Tyner now gone, who are the elder jazz piano giants now living? Dave Burrell, Cooper-Moore, Richie Beirach, and Martial Solal come to mind among those still active. Solal is mainstream; Beirach more mainstream now than free though he's been on the edge at times; Burrell and Cooper-Moore still mighty forces as Vision Festival concerts in recent years have shown, but neither especially prolific in terms of recordings. All of them older than Shipp, so he stands alone in his generation. To look at it from a slightly different angle than Downbeat did, Matthew Shipp has established himself as the premier avant-garde jazz pianist of his generation. Shipp is not willing to be put in a stylistic box. And nowhere is that more apparent than in his trio with bassist Michael Bisio and drummer Newman Taylor Baker. Starting in the bebop era, the piano-bass-drums lineup has been the most classic jazz format in which the piano is featured, accumulating the weight of history and critical expectations. In this setting, a non-mainstream player such as Shipp can infiltrate Newport Jazz Festival, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, and other Establishment bastions in a familiar format and then unleash his ideas on audiences that might not normally be exposed to his style. Thanks to hearing it in the communal language of the piano trio, they can better understand the message the Matthew Shipp Trio has to deliver. Shipp, Bisio, and Baker convened at Shipp's favorite recording venue last year looking to pursue a new direction. The result is both distinctively Shippian yet a further evolution of the group's sound. Personnel: Matthew Shipp - piano; Michael Bisio - bass; Newman Taylor Baker - drums. Recorded October 10, 2019 at Park West Studios in Brooklyn, NY by Jim Clouse. Produced by Steve Holtje.

BIG BLOOD Dark Country Magic LP
Cardinal Fuzz and Feeding Tube Records bring to you the much-anticipated vinyl pressing of Dark Country Magic from this wonderful Maine trio (Quinnisa making her first intentional effort with "Moo Hoo" on this release). Caleb Mukerin and Colleen Kinsella have been key personages of the Portland sonic underground as members of the cosmically-shifting Cerberus Shoals and the folkily psychedelic Fire on Fire before forming the more personal and hermetic Big Blood back in 2006. The band's multi-phasic discography has thus far reminded people of everything from the Comus to Portishead to Julee Cruise at different moments, yet none of these thumbnails comes close to capturing the intimacy and directness of their recordings where they take things to a higher plane of personal expression. In Dark Country Magic, haunting effects and experimental sounds combine with wailing fuzzed-up garage folk anthems and twisted poetic freak-folk as lyrical layers peel away endlessly, tiny amps weep in pain, crude percussion booms thunderous, and ragged, beautiful hooks unfurl straight out of the void. On "Coming Home Pt.III" Kinsella's quivering bewitching vocals ask you to succumb to the hauntingly melancholic drift while acoustics strum quietly up front before Dark Country Magic's playful closer "Moo-Hoo" where Quinnisa performs a children's story. The combination is head spinning and gloriously original, but will be immediately identifiable as Big Blood by anyone who knows the band's music.

GIRLS IN SYNTHESIS Now Here's An Echo From Your Future CD
Following a steady stream of ultra-limited 7" singles, that were collated together in 2019 for the Pre/Post: A Collection 2016-2018 (HARB 204LP, 2018) on Louder Than War, Girls In Synthesis's highly-anticipated debut album arrives. Since forming in late 2016, Girls In Synthesis have quickly forged a fearsome reputation as one of the most exciting and volatile live acts in London. In equal parts frantic, considered, ear-splitting, and melodic, the group take their cues from the early DIY punk and post-punk pioneers to keep everything in-house. Now Here's An Echo From Your Future is their first release for fabled experimental punk label Harbinger Sound and finds the band advancing their sound, making subtle but experimental shifts in texture and tone, helping to break free from the shackled straight-jacket of punk rock that, to be fair, never really held them down in the first place. Across the album's ten songs, Girls In Synthesis explore a wide range of sensations and sounds as the album detonates into life with opening track "Arterial Movements" in a screeching flurry of over-driven guitar and hammering drums. The contrast between the slow, mesmerizing look into aging and dying in "Human Frailty", to the aggressive attack on the rise of the right-wing in "They're Not Listening" shows a wide range of subjects and reactions aggressively tackled. Mental health in a fast-moving, unforgiving world, media control, the divide widening between the have and the have nots, the class divide, the blaming of the poor, NHAEFYF bristles with an unforgiving frustration and temper. The recording of NHAEFYF started at Rockit Studio, Hull in April 2019 during days off on the UK tour to promote the Pre/Post compilation album. The Hull sessions were engineered by studio owner and local musician Sean Tomlinson. The remainder of the album was recorded and engineered by the band throughout summer 2019 in a large rehearsal room at Gun Factory studios, Homerton. Production and finishing touches were completed at GIS bassist John's S.I.C.K Studio in Hither Green. The album was mixed by long-time band collaborator and engineer, Max Walker. In their few years of existence, fans and critics alike have been stunned by the bands pure visceral and punishing wall of sound, as well as applauding the groups way of making a GIS show an all-inclusive experience; playing from within the crowd to create a unique and awe-inspiring spectacle.

THIRDORGAN The Pornography of Despair 3LP
Originally released in 1993 on cassette, Thirdorgan has remained one of the most elusive yet constant figures in Japan's acclaimed noise and industrial movement. Despite having worked with nearly every cult label of the '90s cassette scene, Thirdorgan has scarcely been presented on vinyl and CD, as this special set shows the awesome and challenging long form relentless feedback paths and synthesizer psycho erotic gain staging. Momentous appearances on classic labels such as Skin Crime's inimitable Self Abuse records, Harbinger Sound, and yet another on the influential "Japanese American Noise Treaty" edifice on Release Entertainment. Thirdorgan's base of synthesizer noise cemented him with a deeper connection to the European noise scene ahead of many of his peers. The emphasis on wild and insane analog synth cacophony sets him apart from the more traditional Japanese noise pallet. Painstakingly restored by Kris Lapke, the breadth of this triple-LP gives a new life to the nearly impossible to obtain original cassette on classic Pittsburgh label SSS. Included inside this deluded heavy red paper wide spine jacket is a bonus cd of unreleased master class perfection from the era that was unknown until now. Inquisitive minds may not find answers on The Pornogrpahy of Despair but receptive bodies will find painful pleasure. Red vinyl.

TOLOUSE LOW TRAX Jeidem Fall LP
2020 repress. 2012 release. The Düsseldorfer Detlef Weinrich is a man who is constantly listening to future winds through rushes of the past. He loves the night for its free will. And his music tells stories about it. You might know him as a member of the band Kreidler. As a solo artist he goes under the name Tolouse Low Trax. His first solo album Mask Talk (KK 052CD/056LP, 2010) thrives on a feathery beat frequency and cool new-wave-strength. Corridor Plateau (2011), which appeared as a limited edition to accompany the exhibition, contains percussive electronics and Industrial sounding like it's from the second industrial revolution. His third album Jeidem Fall, is also not from here. It sounds like music brought down to earth from the heavens. But it's a dark cosmos in which there are only fleeting glimpses of light. All eight tracks were composed in a short space of time over the period of just a few months and fit together perfectly atmospherically. With a musical expressiveness that undoubtedly twists your emotions, Jeidem Fall attacks the subconscious and clouds the mind. The drums have more movement than on Mask Talk. Along with the constant tapping of drumsticks goes melodical arpeggios dancing dark and dirty. At times longing vocals drift abstractly through the room, as on "Sa Seline" or "Geo Scan", without telling any obvious story. You could compare the dark minimal timbre of the drum computer aesthetic with Craig Leon's first reductive album Nommos (1981). There is also a hint of the minimalist industrial of the Spanish band Esplendor Geometrico in the bubbly textures. But Tolouse Low Trax is still looking from the present into the future and filter and filters all his personal preferences through his MPC and his small synth setup to make them come alive here and now in a new way. Again, Tolouse Low Trax has created a truly mysteriously vibrating drum computer music which offers hypnotic magic for the shadowy dance floor. Only a little light should illuminate the whole thing and the bodies that move above them should have no fear from threatening percussion which are displaced into a misty trance. A dark swaying shadowy mass, ideal for a journey at the end of the night and all those non-places where longing sleeps and the last romantics dance while getting drunk.

ANT ORANGE You're Super In Diagonal CD
Ant Orange returns to Karaoke Kalk with the album You're Super In Diagonal. Following up on three EPs between 2015 and 2018 for the Berlin-based label as well as a 12" single with drum'n'bass derivatives last year, the British producer again operates at the crossroads of laid-back house, experimental hip-hop, and a bass-heavy, abstract minimalism that hints at his background in UK garage and other strains of the hardcore continuum. Both physically moving and intellectually challenging, Ant Orange's music has always found a comfortable niche between different genres and styles. Working with short vocal snippets, jazz elements and a diverse array of rhythms, his tracks open up small worlds full of endearing details and thrilling dynamics. Nine of those worlds -- seven on the vinyl version of the album -- form the sonic cosmos that is You're Super In Diagonal. Even in Ant Orange's unique and multi-faceted discography, it is an extraordinarily lush and welcoming album. The opener already sets the mood with shimmering ambient textures, the feverish shivers of a hi-hat and a broken beat that serves as the perfect foundation for the warm and minimalistic bass line that enters the picture around the two-minute mark. The aptly named "Flutter" already encapsulates everything that makes You're Super In Diagonal the marvelous record it is: Ant Orange's sound is based on the playful interplay of discrete elements. From the jungle echoes on "Monogome" to the throbbing bass on tracks like "Cracker" or "All In" and the slick deep house grooves of "We'll Call You," the producer's choices thus lead to odd and unusual, but always cordial and inviting end results. They refer to a variety of genres from jazz to grime and IDM, but always retain their specificity. You're Super In Diagonal is a bottomless grab bag of ideas and influences, an album to get lost in, whether it's on rainy days spent on the couch or under a shining sun with a drink in hand.

VA Kompakt Total 20 2LP
Double LP version. Two decades. Twenty years. Twenty compilations. Over 400 tracks. Over two days of total playing time and countless colored dots. If someone would have told Kompakt in 1999, when they put together Total 1 (KOM 010LP/KOMP 003CD, 1999) that this would turn into one of the longest standing compilation series in techno world, they would have laughed out loud. But here they are -- in the year 2020 which will probably go down in history as the most difficult period ever for club culture. But Kompakt won't stop doing what they're doing. Music is our oxygen. We'll dance together soon again. The Total series has always been like Kompakt's yearbook and to say it with the late Frank Sinatra: It was a very good year. The label's family of artists delivered a strong heterogeneous mix of uplifting sounds, from the lush reveries of Robag Wruhme and Soela to the stark primetime bangers of Marc Romboy or Anna & Kittin and everything in between. Notable new entries to our crew are the Londoner Kiwi with his wonderfully careless "Hello Echo" that picks up the camp disco vibes Justus Köhncke made a staple in our repertoire. Amsterdam's David Douglas delivers an appetizer for a full course meal. His quirky pop approach sits comfortably between fellow dutchmen Weval's abstract beats and Agents Of Time's opulent Italo disco. Yotam Avni blends Detroit techno with new age jazz that reminisces the sound of ECM artists like Jan Garbarek or John Surman. The man with the hat, Kölsch also picks up jazzier notes in his very own big room style. Youngblood Jonathan Kaspar appears twice, fortifying his status as one of the hottest beat smiths of our hometown Cologne. Total wouldn't be Total without our permanent staff present in full force. May Total 20 become your trustworthy companion in these uncertain times. As per tradition, Kompakt's founding fathers, Voigt & Voigt, Jürgen Paape, Jörg Burger, Michael Mayer, as well as our Berlin outpost Sascha Funke all deliver exclusive gems that also feature on Total 20.Double-LP version features Jürgen Paape, Jörg Burger, Michael Mayer, David Douglas, Sascha Funke, Voigt & Voigt, and Jonathan Kaspar. Following his massively successful second album 1983 (KOM 329LP/KOMP 122CD, 2015) and the start of his very own imprint IPSO in 2016, celebrated Danish producer and live performer Kölsch keeps those bangers coming. For Speicher 93, he concocts two very special cuts that dig deep into heartfelt, catchy melodies and give them an impelling beat foundation to ride out their trip. Both the brass-infused "Grey" and the jacking club monster "Kir" push for epic dancefloor moments.

VA Kompakt Total 20 2CD
As per tradition, Kompakt's founding fathers, Voigt & Voigt, Jürgen Paape, Jörg Burger, Michael Mayer, as well as our Berlin outpost Sascha Funke all deliver exclusive gems that also feature on Total 20.2CD version features Robag Wruhme, Soela, Michael Mayer, Jürgen Paape, David Douglas, Kiwi, Sascha Funke, Jonathan Kaspar, Voigt & Voigt, Steve Moore, Weval, Jörg Burger, Agents Of Time, Kölsch, Enzo Elia, Aldebaran, Quique, Yotam Avni, Anna & Kittin, Christian Nielsen, Marc Romboy, and Blackrachas.

VELOSO, CAETANO Caetano Veloso (Irene) (Clear Vinyl) LP
2020 repress. Lilith Records present a reissue of Caetano Veloso's Caetano Veloso (Irene), originally issued in 1969. Although Veloso had already been thrown in jail once for his criticism of Brazil's military regime, he continued to speak out against it on Caetano Veloso (Irene), with tracks like "Irene", (about a machine gun-toting outlaw celebrated by the left). No wonder he would soon find himself in political exile in the UK. The general tone of the album is in keeping with its dire message and actually, Veloso felt it was important for his voice of protest to be heard around the world. If he was a high profile public figure, he felt that he would be safer. Despite all of this (or perhaps because of all this) and the man still managed to make excellent records! Clear vinyl.

2020 repress. Originally released in 1969, this album is one of the most significant in Brazilian musical history, spearheading the musical Tropicalia revolution lead by Brazilian legends Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, not to mention Gal Costa and mutant rockers Os Mutantes. Not only were the artists experimenting with the music, they were also making a very strong political statement that spoke out very harshly against the military regime in Brazil at the time. This album helped land Veloso and Gil a brief stint in jail and eventually in political exile in the UK. Includes bonus CD of the album.

MCSHEE & KEVIN DEMPSEY, JACQUI From There To Here CD
Jacqui McShee and Kevin Dempsey formed McDem Records in 2020, focusing on their own blend of folk, blues, and jazz music. The story behind their collaboration began at New Forest Folk Festival a few years ago. Jacqui McShee's Pentangle was a member down and luckily Kevin was on the same bill and bravely stepped in. They had both had admired each other's work for some time and it seemed like such a good idea to start working together, so McDem Records was born. McDem Records has given them both a chance to explore and record more traditional folk songs and share writing ventures. Jacqui McShee is a founding member of the iconic folk/jazz group Pentangle. She has worked with some of the finest musicians in the folk scene, including Steve Tilston, Fairport Convention, David Hughes, Chris While, Julie Matthews, and many more. She received a BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Lifetime Achievement award in 2007 and played the 50th Anniversary Isle Of Wight Festival in 2019. LIEBEZEIT & FRIEDMAN/FRIEDMAN & PAIS Eurydike 12"
Repressed. Eurydike is a four-track EP from Liebezeit & Friedman including two unreleased "Secret Rhythms" tracks in a picture sleeve! João Pais Filipe (drums) and Burnt Friedman (electronics) ultimately hypnotize their audience by activating cosmic mechanics. Both refer to it as "automatic music," yet their focus is on playing and exploring rare rhythmic modes; in Friedman's terms: "We organize pressure mediation according to mother nature." Friedman and Pais left behind the consensus artificial paradise of cultural musical idioms, developing an immersive, archaic next-level dance music, deeply rooted in natural laws of motion. Informed by the works of Jaki Liebezeit -- one of the most influential drummers of all time -- Friedman and Pais pursue a different path. On side two the listener is confronted with two more recent, unreleased "Secret Rhythms" contributions. The two Friedman & Liebezeit studio tracks were recorded in 2016 and were played lived frequently. Since his passing in early 2017, Liebezeit's drum theory has been carefully retrieved and presented to the public for the first time.

GERMANNU Germannu 12"
Originally released in 1984. Manoel Germano Filho (better known as Germannu) started his foray into education by following in his family's footsteps, earning his agronomy degree at the Federal University of Viçosa in the state of Minas Gerais. Yet it was music rather than soil that held his heart, and after a chance meeting with Milton Nascimento, one of Brazil's biggest musical icons -- both back then and today -- he threw himself into the Minas music scene, burgeoned as it was by student movements and local music festivals. In 1984, Manoel, now Germannu, met the composer, arranger, vocalist, and guitarist Jorge "Jóia" Olímpio at a show in Linhares, and a month later threw caution to the wind, moved to Rio and found himself crashing at Jorge's house while putting down his roots. Over the following days and weeks, the recording of Germannu's debut LP began in earnest, starting with his songs "Lavoura", "Fale De Mim", and "Hei De Amar". Jorge's help was crucial. Although Germannu had certain melodies in mind and chord structures around which he wanted to build the songs, he hadn't yet developed how the melodies would play out, nor decided how exactly the chord sequences would go. The pre-production was done at Jorge's home, before they moved over to the now-defunct Estúdio Rio near the Laranjeiras viaduct to flesh things out. Jorge Jóia called on his contacts and brought in musicians he was sure would work, including a bassist and former bandmate named Borjalo, with whom he had previously played with in a band that was put together by the legendary organ player, Lafayette. Drummer, Paulinho Black (ex-Banda Black Rio), and pianist, Moisés Pedrosa, were also part of the team, as was the fabulous Jorge Cardozo -- who transcribed Jorge Jóia's arrangements. 180 gram vinyl; Old School Tip On cover; includes download card.

EVENS, STEPHEN Employee Of The Month LP
LP version. Employee Of The Month is packed full of candor as post-punk, indie-pop troubadour Stephen EvEns unleashes his alter-ego. This beatnik, indie-punk escapade is accompanied with swooping motoric guitars, squelching effects, and crackling sounds that fluctuate from the exotic, improvisational to a deadpan realism. EvEns muses on the futility and injustice of the world, all delivered with a huge wry smile and a glamorous, magical, and eccentric delivery. The album kicks-off with the single "Dustbin Man" focusing on key workers and the people that knit society together, with booming oscillating guitars and a post-punk disjointedness. "Push Yr Thumb In Yr Eye" builds on a massive wave of distortion, as the pendulum swings to a passionate accompaniment of off-kilter violins in this post-punk dystopian tragedy. "Freak Show" guests William D. Drake on piano and accentuates EvEns cabaret style as he re-collects a tale of migration to the city. The vocals fill with a melancholic timbre in a dramatic search for a positive future. "John Snow" shares vocals with Caroline Gilchrist (Hot Sauce Pony) echoing the sound of Fun Boy Three. A sliding, sludgy drumbeat, as vocals express caution, "somethings lurking in the water, but you still look to the sky." "I Hate Shop" re-collects life with a major high street retailer -- a glamorous critique -- crashing, roaring sounds break the bleak banality of shop life. "The Crystal Palace" which cries, "come and get me and take me home," is a beautifully crafted piece, delicate and moving. Multi-instrumentalist and talented artist in his own right Stephen EvEns tours with his own guitar and full band line-up, or occasional Casiotone.

BARRINGTONE Bonanza Plan CD
Barringtone offer their eclectic debut, Bonanza Plan, produced in two parts by Nick Howiantz at Brixton Hill Studios and Oli Bayston (Boxed In) at Gun Factory Studio, Homerton. Bonanza Plan is a slice of avant-garde pop, recorded in live takes, with over-dubs, synths and field recordings. The album is a pulsating and bizarre assortment of progressive pop, math rock and angular mayhem, with an organic smattering of bird song. Lighting-up dancefloors with their mathematical, rock pop wizardry, Barringtone are fast becoming known for their enchanting, complex arrangements and danceable/dissonant time signatures. The album is a mix of glorious electro pop like "Feverhead", to the more math rock, progressive stylings of "Foxes & Brimstone". "Gold Medal Vision" is motoric, unexpected, clunky and funky -- curiously demanding. "Dreamboyz" shimmies into an unanticipated groove from a lyric that conjures the image of unicorns, ridden bareback, tigers painting rainbows, bursting into flame -- wild, heady, and scattered, unexpected chords surge and surprising beats sneak up on you. "Into The Woods" takes you into the forest, as krautrock guitar arrangements conjure electronic beats. "The New New" speeds up, a dazzling synth line, a lilting lift, crafts into a spangled disco ball, evoking an optimistic Public Service Broadcasting, as the track plunges from laser chic to rugged disco beats. "Emily Smallhands" spellbinds like a fine piece of embroidery, musing on a lady with a curious name. "Technollipop" is jerky, frenetic, a Rundgren-esque foray into the hypnotic delights of AK/DK, squelching beats and choir-like rock vocals. Finale "Pet Gazelles" is a whirring miasma of beats and electronics, surging towards sonic genius, while creating an eccentric and exhilarating sketchbook of sound similar to Battles, in a mercurial realist expression. Barringtone emerge from their previous incarnation post-punk electro pop artists Clor, their debut Snake In The Grass (2008) was produced by Jas Shaw, one half of Simian Mobile Disco. While Barry Dobbin's vocals featured on SMD's track Love, from 2007 album Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release.

WORM, VANESSA Vanessa 77 LP
Optimo Music presents Vanessa 77 the debut album from New Zealander Vanessa Worm. After entrusting Optimo Music to release three much loved singles, it seemed right to let Vanessa stretch out across an album and show the world what she is about and how talented she is. Vanessa is exactly the kind of artist Optimo Music dreams of finding; her music fits in with no genre and no scene -- it is its own genre and its own scene. Musically free and anarchic, Vanessa conforms to nobody's dogma. Before lockdown Vanessa played a series of Southern Hemisphere live shows that entranced all who saw them. Vanessa's thoughts on the album: "Vanessa 77, like most creative endeavors, is a journey of self-discovery. Mentally, emotionally, and creatively. I spent most of my time alone in winter 2019 -- focused solely on personal development and self-realization via the creation of this album. It was a way for me to put my mental state onto a plate -- the joys, the fears, the epiphanies, and so on. I so desperately wanted to share what I was learning with the world too -- I intended for Vanessa 77 to help others to heal, self-realize and alchemize. It was a nine-month process of death and a re-birth from the old into the new. Much like the world is experiencing now entering 2020, I hope this album can provide some form of healing, soothing, celebration, and act as a sub-conscious guide for us as we enter into this New Earth. Thank you to all who listens, enjoy!"

TARAS BULBA Soul Weaver LP
Taras Bulba featuring ex Earthling Society head Fred Laird return with their second album Soul Weaver. Soul Weaver was recorded between February and April of 2020. The album is a sharp contrast to the Taras Bulba debut. Whereas One (2019) was a laidback psilocybic novelty travelogue; Soul Weaver is more guitar-driven dream like psychedelia, mixing '60s garage rock, shoegaze, bucolic west coast acid folk, and ambient feedback. The album builds on song structures instead of drifting instrumentals prevalent on the band's debut and is an indication of the path they want to go musically. Constructing the album in such a short time and under lockdown restrictions changed the way the album took shape. Due to the social distancing percussion had to be constructed from drum machines or "found" from previous sessions and cannibalized. So, in some ways this is more a solo record (Jon has never heard the songs). It is a guitar album whereas One was a rhythm/percussion focused recording. Lyrically it draws on (quite accidentally) the writings of Dion Fortune, particularly her novel The Sea Priestess (1938). It never even came into mind until I started draughting the lyrics and things started popping up that had very strong comparisons to that novel. The recording has a bit of a watery, dreamy feel too and it's also haunted. It's haunted by a good soul though; with electric blue eyes. Transparent turquoise vinyl; Housed in a reverse board printed outer sleeve with black poly-lined inner; includes download code; edition of 300.

MOTORPSYCHO The All Is One 2LP
Double LP version. If Motorpsycho's The Crucible (MPCD 103CD/MPLP 303LP, 2019) -- both visually and musically -- started where The Tower (2017) ended, one can argue that The All Is One starts where The Crucible ended and thus finishes the so-called "Gullvåg trilogy". That said, The All Is One is so much more than a sequel, and very much a standalone album in its own right. While The Crucible took the band a step further out than The Tower, the new one explores new frontiers, especially with the dark, brooding landscape of the 42-minute epic centerpiece that is "N.O.X.", possibly the most ambitious piece of music they have recorded. Eight shorter tracks, clocking in between two and ten minutes, make up the rest of the album and bring some balance to the proceedings. Lyrically, The All Is One takes up the threads from the previous albums. While there is no thematic red line as such -- and not being overtly political -- it is difficult for a socially conscious writer like Bent Sæther not to observe and reflect on what goes on in an increasingly unstable world. They have also found strong inspiration and common ground in the paintings of Håkon Gullvåg, the artist responsible for the cover art. The album was recorded in two major sessions, the first took place in Studio Black Box in France with long-time collaborator and guitarist Reine Fiske. Here they mainly focused on material with more or less traditional song structures. The second session was at Ocean Sound Recording in Norway and basically dealt with the long "N.O.X." suite, developed from the commissioned music they wrote for, and performed at, the St. Olav Festival in Trondheim last summer with two of their favorite Norwegian musicians, Lars Horntveth (Jaga Jazzist) and Ola Kvernberg (Steamdome). The whole album was mixed by Andrew Scheps at his Punkerpad studio in the UK. Artistically searching as ever, and in their own way joyously stretching the rock format as out of whack as they can, Motorpsycho neither can nor will align themselves fully to any scene or genre. Traveling their own path in their own tempo, it might take longer to get anywhere, but that is just fine when the journey itself is the whole point. And what a journey it has been; this band is still peaking after more than 30 years in the business.

MUNGO'S HI FI X MARINA P Soul Radio LP
Mungo's Hi Fi cement their long-standing connection with Italian-born, Paris-based singer Marina P, by releasing eagerly awaited concept album, Soul Radio. Over six years in the making, Soul Radio is an ambitious representation of the artistic fullness of Marina P, expanding into multiple genres while keeping its roots in rocksteady, reggae, and ska. Born in Italy to jazz loving parents, Marina P travelled to Paris to get involved in its music scene. Word reached Mungo's Hi Fi of this rising singer with a cool yet emotive tone, and the Scottish sound system and label reached across the Channel to voice her on their industrial strength Belly Ska riddim. The result was 2007's massive and enduring "Divorce À L'Italienne", which was included on Mungo's 2009 Sound System Champions album (SCOB 001CD/LP). That track is present on Soul Radio, alongside an inspired rocksteady cover of Smashing Pumpkins' "Soma", plus ska smash, and "The Beat Goes SKA!" featuring Tippa Irie and Dennis Alcapone, an adaptation of Sonny and Cher's "And The Beat Goes On". Having worked up a sweat on the ska and rocksteady dancefloor, the album relaxes into a more chilled space, with the haunting "Nice To Meet You" and the serene "Great Wave". These calming, secluded sonic spaces combine Mungo's forward-thinking production with a retro 90s-meets-50s, triphop-in-a-jazz club nostalgia. Taken as a whole, Soul Radio celebrates Marina P's depth and versatility as an artist. It's also the perfect soundtrack to both the night before -- and the morning after.

APPARAT Walls 2LP
2020 repress. Double vinyl version. Walls is the fifth full-length album for Apparat. Despite its title, Walls isn't about dividing lines. Instead, it describes a circle that pulls many elements together into a protected, enclosed space where they jostle and roam free: strings and mallet instruments; rock guitar and gravelly sawtooth synths; stuttering digital percussion and muscular studio drumming. Important guests and collaborators on this record include Telefon Tel Aviv's Josh Eustis, who did the album's final mixdown in Chicago, as well as the talented Raz Ohara, who contributes his smoky vocals. Apparat has melded his genius as a sound designer with his growing songwriting talents to craft songs brimming with ideas, energy, texture, light, color. They are hummable, embraceable, swimmable, possibly edible.

WONDERLAND Wonderland Band No. 1 CD
2016 release. Originally released in 1971. "Wonderland was formed in the early 1968 in Germany. The five-piece consisted of former members of The Rattles and The Tonics, both Hamburg-based, and The Summer Set from England. Signed by Polydor, they released three singles produced by James Last, including the outstanding hit 'Moscow'. The band went on tour with The Bee Gees, The Nice and Deep Purple. Following a line-up change and internal frictions, the band finally folded in 1970, but the masterminds Achim Reichel and Frank Dostal tried to keep the flame burning as Wonderland Band and a new album called Wonderland Band No. 1. This album was recorded 1971 in Hamburg with a cast of 26 guest musicians, among them the complete James Last Orchestra. For the very first time, this unique mixture of pop, psychedelic folk and progressive rock is released on an official CD and shows the amazing qualities of this project. It was the first and last album of the band, a milestone of German rock music!"

CHARGE Charge LP
2020 restock. Sommor Records present the first ever legit vinyl reissue of Charge's self-titled album, originally released in 1973. An impossible-to-find, private psychedelic hard-rock album. Charge were a British power-trio born from the ashes of local South Coast heavy-blues bands Baby Bertha and Sweet Poison. Comprised of Dave Ellis (guitar), Pete Gibbons (drums), and Ian Mclaughlin (bass), they played heavy rock influenced by Hendrix, Cream, Free, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, etc. In 1973, they cut a demo album at SRT studios of which 99 copies in blank covers were pressed and later distributed between family and friends, with a few of them also shipped to record companies in what proved to be an unsuccessful attempt at earning a recording contract. The music is raw hard-rock with unrestrained guitar, Lemmy-esque vocals, and psych/heavy progressive touches. Side B contains the epic anti-war suite "Child Of Nations". Remastered sound. Includes color insert with rare photos and liner notes by David Wells; includes download card.

EL GOODO Zombie LP
LP version. An incomparable world of bug-eyed, harmony-rich folk-pop-psych-alt-country-rock lies in wait for intrepid listeners as the best Welsh band the world nearly forgot, El Goodo, return with only their fourth album in a 20-year career, Zombie. The first single to be revealed, "The Grey Tower", is an expansive, five-minute trip through the '60s heat of Lauren Canyon and Haight-Ashbury via the picturesque Vale of Neath. The result of a rapid-fire period of easy-come recording at the legendary Rockfield Studios in the company of experimental producer, Tim Lewis (aka Thighpaulsandra, a Julian Cope collaborator and former member of Spiritualized), El Goodo's 13-track long player gathers loose ends from the band's stop-start lifespan, as well as brand new songs exploring parenthood, losing parents and -- tangentially -- Spanish surrealist film. Featuring over 20 musicians -- including core members Pixy Jones (lead vocals/guitars/keys), Elliott Jones (drums), Jason Jones (vocals/guitars), and Andrew Cann (bass) -- the album welcomes contributions from Sweet Baboo/Stephen Black (clarinet/bass clarinet/flute) and Welsh Music Prize-nominee, Eugene Capper (violin/slide guitar). The Grey Tower itself is assembled of 17 players, finessing the ride between bright, sun-dappled hippy pop and intense, squally fuzz with saxophone, harmonica, heavy strings and a Baldwin Electric Harpsichord. As well as recording Zombie direct to tape, El Goodo dug around in Lewis' rich archive of analogue equipment at his Aeriel studio in Carmarthenshire, including a rare Univox early synth used by Joe Meek in the recording of his 1962 game-changer "Telstar" (now used by the band on "I Can't Leave"). The result of their journey is a rich tapestry of valve-powered sound, recalling the White Album (1968), Scott Walker, The Troggs, Gene Clark, the Beach Boys and numerous other "golden-age" sonic explorers. The album is named after Lewis's sadly-departed dog -- etched in the band's memories and nasal passages as a vegetable-loving creature, with noxious after effects. Forming in the late '90s, El Goodo (named after the Big Star song, "Ballad Of El Goodo") emerged with intent as not only a support band for Super Furry Animals on their 2006 UK tour, but also as label mates as the Furries released the band's self-titled debut on their Placid Casual label in 2005. The next 15 years saw El Goodo blip contentedly on the radar as a gently persistent musical jewel cherished by knowing audiophiles.

SPACE GHOST Time To Dance 12"
Space Ghost returns with hedonistic house anthems for your living room dancefloor on his latest EP, Time To Dance. After a string of successful albums on Apron and Tartelet Records, the Oakland native Sudi Wachspress (Space Ghost) returns with a selection of golden-era house anthems conveying the message of unity through dance -- a much-needed reminder of better days. The 28-year-old producer and DJ has been gaining momentum over the last few years. His growing catalog of ambient-leaning house with lush musical textures is a testament to carry on the legacy of famed US house producers, who have set the tone and pioneered electronic dance music since the 1980s. On his new EP, Time To Dance, Space Ghost gets on the mic and takes us back to the early days of house music, effortlessly mixing the deep bass rhythms of Chicago with the Nu Groove-era of the East Coast. "This release was mostly inspired by some early East Coast house. I started the idea before Covid-19 really took over the world. I wanted to make something explicitly for the dancefloor, kind of like my own dance floor anthem." The EP's main cuts "Time To Dance" and "New World Energy" both come in two versions -- a main version and an alternative mix for maximum dancefloor pleasure. As the artist's vocals echo on the track: It's time to come together and work for a better future for all. "Now with everything going on with the coronavirus and all the protests in the US and across the world, I think my goals have shifted. Even though the world is on pause and people can't spin these tracks at a club, I still think the message of Time To Dance is: We can work together and music can help us through it."

The gentle electronics of Roach's synthesizers mix with flute, electric piano and nature sounds flow like breath, enveloping the listener in a sustained, delicate and translucent atmosphere. Quiet Music was originally released as a three tape cassette series in 1986 on Fortuna Records and is now being issued as a complete series on vinyl for the first time ever. After Structures From Silence was released, Steve was receiving invitations to create music for the emerging meditation yoga and healing arts community in Los Angeles. Quiet Music 1 was originally commissioned for a meditation video, which featured a collection of video images of lush forested areas, wild flowers and natural serenity. But by the time the piece was completed the producer passed away and the project was never completed. Quiet Music 1's direct connection to a distinct environment set the tone for the trilogy of albums. The Quiet Music series was released in a timeline that is often seen as linear but this music was created directly alongside the dynamic fully electronic albums like Now, Traveler, and Empetus. In the early '80s Steve would be shifting between the invigorating sequencer-percussive driven music and then move directly into weightless drifts and contemplative spaces. This way of creating grew naturally out of a desire to not settle into one place sonically and to nourish himself with a space that could be creative and fine-tuned, creating a calm and renewing zone while living within the hectic pace of urban life in Los Angeles."

SCOTT HARDWARE Engel LP
"On April 3, 2020, Toronto's Scott Hardware will be releasing Engel, his second full-length album, and first on Telephone Explosion Records. It will mark the end of a three-year process of writing, recording and letting down his guard (for better or worse.) His last album, 2016's Mutate, Repeat, Infinity, was the culmination of a years-long obsession with the HIV/AIDS crisis and how it was shaped by capitalism. Hardware's early years after coming out were shaped by the courage of people close to him who were dealing with difficult diagnoses. 'Looking at these situations from a macro/societal lens must have been the only way I could process and share those years of my life and my loved ones' lives with an audience' Hardware recalls. 'From a writing and production standpoint, I was trying to re-imagine various eras of dance music and sound as urgent and vital as they would have in their heyday of the '80s and '90s.' Within a year of moving back (to Toronto) from Berlin, Scott watched Wim Wenders' Wings of Desire and was immediately filled with its inherent curiosity. The film, in short, follows angels around pre-unification Berlin as they listen to the thoughts of the mortals they are surrounded by. 'I sought with this album to capture the film's velvety feeling -- in turns funny, depressing, dark and mundane -- in LP form' Hardware says. 'These songs imagine Wenders' angels buzzing around my friends, my family and I. Writing from their point of view allowed me unfettered access to my own thoughts about them and myself.' Engel's cover art is adorned by an image by artist Chris Curreri called the Insomniac. Curreri's work winks and nods to queer sex, emotionality and darkness, and this piece is no different. This is work that reaches back to queer artists such as Francis Bacon and brings back with it a timeless everyday horror faced by queers: shame. These are artists who visualize monsters and demons hiding in plain sight. Like singing to dead queer ancestors on Mutate, Repeat, Infinity, Hardware is trying to make sense of another queer cross-to-bear, this time coming from within. The image is gory and difficult, not unlike the process of digging shame from one's spirit. Engel, in its preoccupation with angels, the afterlife and private thoughts holds hands with the image."

MARIANGELA Mariangela LP
"In the mid-70s, Mariangela Celeste signed to a major label (Polygram) at the age of 13. She would then go on to record her self-titled album with rising European superstar Vangelis. Though tragically overlooked upon its release, Mariangela is a gem of early electronic pop with sparkling synths, drums machines, and lush arrangements, propelling the songs of an unapologetically strong-willed Adolescent. By 1972, Vangelis' band 'Aphrodite's Child' had earned widespread acclaim for their lavish psych- prog masterpiece, 666. Though still years away from the Chariots of Fire and Blade Runner soundtracks, that would make him a household name also in North America, Vangelis had already released three solo albums, and was well on his way to becoming a worldwide celebrity. Polygram hired him as a producer to work with upcoming artists of their list, and he handpicked the teenaged singer-songwriter Mariangela. Mariangela's most successful songs are the ones she wrote herself, coupled with Vangelis' forward-thinking production. The heart-pumping beat of 'You Are The One' sounds like a teenage impression of ABBA or sonic forerunner to The Carpenter's song 'Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft'. Floating head and shoulders above all else is Mariangela's wave ballad 'My Dear Life', reminds of the fusing the spellbinding vocals of Wendy and Bonnie's 'Genesis', combined with the dazzling futurism LP of Roberto Cacciapaglia's The Ann Steel Album. The sophisticated ballads 'Alone With The Day', and 'Memories of Friends', consist of impressively orchestrated, heart touching melodies that give a powerful and moving experience to the listener. Its sound is years ahead of its time, with Vangelis' decisions to wrap the song's dreamy melodies in sundazed synths, popping drum machines, and cavernous guitar effects, confounding even its creator. When the album hit the shelves in 1975, its release was confusingly limited to Greece, Canada, South Africa, and Holland. Why Polygram would choose to make it nearly impossible to find it in Western Europe or England, where Vangelis' star was rising, remains a mystery up to this day."

PANTAYO Pantayo LP
"Pantayo explores what's possible for contemporary kulintang music with the atonal blend of kulintang ensemble instruments with vocals and electronic production. The album features eight diverse songs speaking to Pantayo's musical influences as queer diasporic Filipinas. Produced by Yamantaka // Sonic Titan's alaska B, Pantayo was written and recorded from 2016-2019 in Toronto. Pantayo is an audio diary of how the ensemble has grown together as writers and performers. The songwriting process started with members workshopping and performing traditional kulintang pieces from the Southern Philippines, often instrument-switching on the kulintang, agongs, sarunays, gandingan, bandir, and dabak. Adapting kick drums and synths to the modal tuning of the gongs further expanded Pantayo's ability to incorporate modern musical expressions such as punk and R&B. 'If you listen to the recordings of our rehearsals and songwriting sessions, you can hear us deconstructing the kulintang parts section-by-section and practicing our songs in different styles' says keyboardist and vocalist Eirene Cloma. 'You can also hear how close we've gotten and how our creative workflow strengthened over the years.' Grounded in the interpretation of kulintang music, Pantayo can be a vehicle for discussions around diasporic Filipino identity. All five members have different experiences of settling in Canada and with that comes their relationships with music. Kat Estacio, co-founder of Pantayo, says 'One way that we can make this world feel like home for folks like us is to mix the kulintang music that we learned with different sounds and song structures that feel familiar to us.'"

NEW FRIES Is The Idea Of Us LP
"New Fries has never been interested in being a band. What we mean is a spirit of abandoning ideas of what songs should be, how they should be performed, and by whom. We've never been interested in the tradition of songwriting -- though we're interested in musical elements like repetition, space, and dynamics. We have wanted our music to make people dance but have also wanted to produce the feeling of that being taken away from a room. We often work around these sorts of energy transfers (whether or not we name them this way). This space to make music in has felt wild and free. We have also contradicted ourselves. We are also always changing. In 2018 Ryan Carley (synthesizer) left the band and we found ourselves at our first juncture to restructure and re-evaluate New Fries. This is such a classic boring story, we know. But immediately we knew that as a three piece (the band's original formation) we had to turn to something new and open -- the way some describe 'beginners mind'. Anni grabbed bass (which was new to her), Tim grabbed guitar and a sampler as a new juggling routine, and Jenny reduced her drum kit to three pieces. We wanted to create a structure that allowed us to be curious about being in transition. Much of this record sounds and reflects on this in-between. It's anxious in its repetitions and unsure of genre. It rejects a singular character or emotion and attempts to instead act as a container for many. Anni's lyrics state this directly: 'it lacks a mood, it lacks definition' / 'curiosity beyond expectation'. Her lyrics describe the spaces, objects, people, and situations that embody an in-between -- her grandfather who worked as medium, the ecology of the foreshore, Mount Tambora's eruption in 1816 that produced the Year Without a Summer, and mesh (the fabric). The result is a collage of 6 songs and many otherwise quick ideas. Much of this collage was testament to the work of engineer/musician Carl Didur. Carl (Zacht Automaat, formerly US Girls) is a long-standing pillar of Toronto's experimental music community. He is also a tape expert, which we knew these songs needed entering the recording process as mostly bare grooves. The result was less that of hiring an engineer than it was working with a collaborator. His musical ideas are all over this record. Is The Idea Of Us is the situation of musicians/non-musicians making music together perhaps completely illegible in the music on this record and to the random listener who doesn't know our story in South Bend, Indiana (how did you find us?!) But with this title we name this absurd gesture, through our changing relationship to making music both as a unit and as individuals. There are enough bands out there; we insist on do it differently."

GIST, THE Interior Windows CD
In the wake of Young Marble Giants' breakup, two camps were created, with Stuart Moxham taking the band's minimalist, geometric play to extremes and Alison Statton adding more warmth and feeling to the same basic template and creating something stunning but based in popular forms. Those two opposing -- almost knee-jerk -- means of forging new paths away from one of music's most astonishingly unique debuts both happened to include Stuart's brother -- Alison's former boyfriend -- Phil Moxham. Without a real template to guide him, Stuart's new form of music -- as The Gist -- was widely regarded as wildly uneven. Stuart admits that he didn't know which way to go, so in perverse style, he decided to take all directions at once. The Gist's original discography stood at a scant 18 songs, but only seven featured Stuart's own voice, often in heavily processed and oddly mixed form. So, while The Gist's label, Rough Trade, had the widest array of unique voices in popular music, Stuart buried his own voice. Sales disappointed. The Gist were dropped. A decade later, starting with a critical reevaluation of The Gist's sole album, Embrace The Herd (1982), in an issue of Mojo, the tide begin to turn. Ambience in pop music had enjoyed a cult following from Eno on, but the non-linear structure of many of The Gist's songs had certain parallels with the rise of artists such as Aphex Twin and Seefeel. One song from the era was covered by Etienne Daho in France. The Gist's story could have been different. Recent discovery of a trove of unreleased songs, versions, and demos showed that Stuart had ample material on a par with his YMG work, sometimes in rough demo form, but often in five or six complete, entirely different arrangements. With the 2017 album of unreleased material by The Gist, Holding Pattern (PICI 009CD/LP, 2017), a new audience discovered the band and the release sold out quickly. Interior Windows adds 13 new performances or alternate versions to the band's catalog, and does the service of finally making both sides of The Gist's first 7" 45 (recorded at the same session as the final YMG single) available again, along with their contribution to the Rough Trade/NME classic compilation C81, and in keeping with The Gist's tradition, at least one song on which Stuart does not appear.

MOXHAM & LOUIS PHILIPPE, STUART The Devil Laughs CD
Much has been written about Young Marble Giants' small, perfect catalog, which contained roughly two-dozen songs, nearly each one a perfect gem. Less is known about his long wilderness years after the break-up of his first professional band. Stuart Moxham's next project, The Gist, chopped YMG's minimalism into a new sound. "This Is Love", "Public Girls", and "Fool For A Valentine" showed his songs to be razor-sharp, but the album's fragmented pieces were a step too far for some, though even the strangest, "Carnival Headache", when cast in sunlight by Alison Statton's combo Weekend, was as fine a song as any he'd written -- and "Love At First Sight" became a million-seller when covered by Etienne Daho. Then Stuart disappeared. A mid-90s resurgence led to fine albums done on low budgets, before more silence followed. The Devil Laughs, recorded a few years back, is a compelling addition to the canon of the 21st century songwriting. Stuart's generally unadorned musical presentation does not hinder his appreciation for the skills of Louis Philippe, whose iconic arrangements across an array of Él label albums inspire the fierce devotion of aficionados around the world. Nor does the unvarnished solidity of Stuart's arrangements deter Louis from hearing possibilities for their presentation in styles which take inspiration from the perfection of 1960s studio technology that led to the rise of Brian Wilson, Burt Bacharach, along with less-recognized names such as Bones Howe and Roy Halee. "Tidy Away" is Young Marble Giants redux, though the backing vocals hint at maturity which band didn't live to see. "Fighting To Lose", written with producer Ken Brake, would pass as a worthy B-side to "Bridge Over Troubled Water", and although the songs are otherwise Stuart's, Louis fans will delight at several, like "Love Hangover" and "Sky Over Water", which display his style and production genius as succinctly as anything on his own albums. The Devil Laughs is as out of its time as Colossal Youth (1980) was -- its subtle but immediate beauty, devoid of "rock", is a recording best understood in the light of those obscure groundbreakers who inspired it -- the faux barbershop vocals of Smile-era Beach Boys, the studio luster of Tom Wilson's work with Simon & Garfunkel, a dash of The Swingle Sisters and French chanson -- along with enough hints of Young Marble Giant's modernist folk abstraction to satisfy longtime fans. The Devil Laughs is a small masterpiece of pure expression.

VA Breathing Instruments 2LP
Compilation album curated by Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith. The directive for the composers featured on Breathing Instruments was, in effect, to accentuate the ways in which instruments sound like they are breathing. Some have recreated the literal experience of feeling or hearing the human breath. Others take a more abstract approach, where "breathing" is more motif than object of emulation. From hushed pulsations and distant vocals in Kathryn Shuman's "Objects" to Julianna Barwick's blissful "Newborn", the tracks give sonic form to the experience of emerging from the womb. There is also a striking concurrence of woodland sounds throughout this collection from the ghostly tones of Emily A Sprague's "Flew" to Cool Maritime and Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith's dew dripped "Daybreak". Meanwhile the undulating seascape of Geotic's "Uncaught" conjures moments of Evening Star by Fripp/Eno (1975), but supplants that album's crystalline production with the warm crackle of vinyl. If you learn only one thing from Breathing Instruments it is that we are inextricable from the natural world. Also features Dim Arc, Sunmoonstar, Fools, Constant Shapes, Jeremiah Chiu, Kacey Johansing, Mary Lattimore, Andy Strain, Bana Haffar, and Ulfur.

VINTAGE CROP Serve To Serve Again LP
Vintage Crop serve to serve again. Over the last four years the Geelong group have become a burgeoning force in the Australian punk scene. Their burly, brusque yet supple songs have evolved from the garage rock of 2017's TV Organs album into the post-punk panic attack of 2019's Company Man EP. Now they've sculpted their sound further, the barrage now offset with robust songwriting, their full-pelt bounce tempered with flailing guitar lines and sardonic commentary. Bringing to mind Wire tackling tracks from early 7"s by The Yummy Fur, it's an inspired approach, both striking and effortlessly mirthful. Vintage Crop still dish-up plenty of commanding stomp, their lyrics remain as keen-eyed as ever, but now they're unafraid to mess with the tempo and drive their point home. Serve To Serve Again is Vintage Crop's third full-length album. It was recorded by Mikey Young after a year of playing solid shows, including tours in Europe and the UK alongside Louder Than Death and URSA and some of the band's biggest shows to date in Australia with Amyl & The Sniffers, R.M.F.C., and The Stroppies. "First In Line" races off the blocks with its sawtooth riff and splintered beat, all jagged edges and ragged vocals. Quickly follow a pair of totemic bruisers in the guise of "The Ladder" and "The North", both brimming with a nigh anthemic quality, confident in their faculty to rouse the rabble. "Jack's Casino" is a lurching romp about gambling, "Streetview" is similarly propellent, only choosing to meander and divert itself with cryptic trips around the neighborhood: "He only moved to that side of town because the postcode is worth it's weight in gold." There's no better poised nod to frustration than "Gridlock" -- "the hustle and bustle of inner-city traffic is driving me nuts because the radios on static." Guitar lines entwine and wriggle wildly free from the song's pouncing rhythm and potent vocal, making for the most vigorous of rackets. "Just My Luck" prowls with a shared thrumming verve, whilst "Everyday Heroes" closes out the album with measured flair. Skewed and fervent, rangy at times yet always assured in its intent Serve To Serve Again is long-legged leap for Vintage Crop into the delirious now. These songs strive to make sense of futility, they criticize the chain of command, question privilege and most importantly make you want more from life. Now all you have to do is turn up the volume! 180 gram, opaque white vinyl; edition of 500.

VA New Horizons: A Bristol Jazz Sound LP
Bristolian promoters Worm Disco Club have been championing South-Western talent since their inception in 2014. Having collaborated with Glastonbury Festival on their notorious "Wormhole" stage and hosted the likes of The Comet Is Coming, The Heliocentrics, and The Mauskovic Dance Band at their regular club night, the name has become synonymous with quality groove laden goodness, percussive madness, jazz, psych, and beyond. Now presenting their label Worm Discs, the collective recruit some of Bristol's most notable emerging talent for an exploration into the new wave of jazz emanating from the city. As Andrew Hayes (Run Logan Run) explains: "Bristol has always had its own sound, but there's been a new crop of young players come through over the past five years that's revitalized the scene and expanded its expectations about what jazz music means." Featuring the likes of Waldo's Gift, Run Logan Run (Montreux Jazz Talent Award winners), BaDaBoom, Lyrebird, and Alun Elliot, New Horizons channels the seismic energy of the sonically rich landscape into 12 progressive, psychedelic, impeccably crafted tracks. The Worm Discs team explain: "The idea for this record began back in 2019. We had been curating parties in Bristol featuring jazz acts from around the UK for several years and had just hosted 'The Wormhole' at Glastonbury Festival, featuring an all-star line-up from the scene. Having always felt that Bristol's exciting jazz scene deserved to be heard, the idea for a label was born. We wanted to showcase some individual creativity and open up a space to try something different." From the cinematic, post-rock infused intensity of Waldo's Gift's "Bergson" to the Zen-like, floating melodies of Ishamel Ensemble's rework of Snazzback's "Flump" and the angular textures of Run Logan Run's epic "A Sea Of Apathy And Indifference" -- this record is true odyssey from start to finish, for those who really want take a trip down the Wormhole.

LEE & WILL FOX, DAVE Breaking The Beats: A Personal Selection of West London Sounds 2CD
"At the end of the '90s, a movement began in West London that birthed a fresh direction in dance music. Though this movement never got mainstream press coverage, never had a crossover chart single, and never really transcended its community roots, there was a unique alchemy at work -- a fertile moment of creativity, where a group of friends began to experiment with new cadences, rhythms, and distilled influences, crafting a new direction in the attics and bedrooms of their neighboring postcodes. Their music was a head-on collision between the sounds they had been raised on; the reggae sound system culture of Notting Hill Carnival, the sophistication and sheen of electro-funk, jazz fusion, soulful house, and disco, the Afro-beat sounds of Tony Allen and Fela Kuti, and the raw minimalism of early hip-hop. Though 'Broken Beat' was never a tagline that the producers anticipated, and one that they often publicly resisted, those two words would gradually come to represent the scattered rhythms, rolling basslines, and soaring changes that were inherent to this exciting new sound. The production was grounded in MPCs and SP1200s, the hand-me-down samplers of the hip-hop and jungle golden eras, and the drums that tumbled out of these machines at the hands of these creators had a jagged, stuttering feel, almost as though the groove was close to collapse." --Mr Beatnick May 2020"As a music lover I was always a fan of the broken beat records that came out of west London in the late '90s/early 2000s . . . there's songs on here from Germany (Jazzanova and Lars Bartkuln) Japan (Jazztronik and Hajime Yoshizawa) to represent that. When putting this album together it is hard not to notice the presence of Kaidi Tatham on many of the songs, he was such an instrumental force in the evolution of the sound. Breaking The Beats isn't a best of broken beat album and due to some licensing issues we were unable to include every song I would have liked but I think it does give the listener a good taste of the sound." --Dave LeeDouble-CD version features 4hero, Bugz In The Attic, Agent K, Fourth Kind, Domu, Jazztronik, Face, Nova Fronteira, AtJazz, Kaidi Tatham, Vikter Duplaix, Taylor McFerrin, Vincent Parker, NSM, The Sunburst Band, IG Culture, Blakai, Bembe Segue, Daz-I-Kue, Colonel Red, Afronaut, Lars Bartkuln, Melissa Browne, Homecookin', Hajime Yoshizawa, Incognito, Jazzanova, Mark de Clive-Lowe, East West Connection, and Likwid Biskit.
