In the summer of 2000, they blocked off a street in Minneapolis for a big outdoor
show featuring Sonic Youth, Stereolab, and – by request of Thurston Moore as well
as the curator of the event – several noise performances.
These were to be Jesse Petersen, John Vance and Cock E.S.P. with guests Weasel Walter
and Misty Martinez. However, the corporate sponsors of the event decreed that there
could be only one opening act, and furthermore the word “cock” could not be used,
thus the umbrella name “SunShip Sextet” was devised and the three sets were
overlapped into one. The final track was recorded live on a local televison news
program the night before the show, before Weasel and Misty arrived in town.
The performers were begged to dampen down the noise and chaos for this performance,
however Emil’s broken amp would only make the one crackling sound by this point,
thus making the whole broadcast even more absurd than expected
