kr0p3r0m "a9FF" (60:47)

Overall impression: excellent! Wow. It's been awhile since I've heard an "industrial" cd that really suprised and entertained me. Kr0p3r0m is probably one guy locked up in a studio somewhere 24 hours a day, but it actually sounds/looks more like a computer that's collecting sounds and images from all over the 'net, piecing them together and then burning and releasing cds and publishing websites. I'm not really sure if I have the group/project name right because everything is written in a predominantly binary language on the cd inserts (as well as on the websites below which you *must* visit). This disc contains music, and apparently software for Macs (which I'm unfortunately unable to check out). Now, the music. This cd has 98 seperately indexed tracks. Yep, that's right ... 98. They range from a few seconds to a few minutes apiece. There are stretches of several dozen or so tracks that when listened to sequentially they sound like a "song", but then there are also stretches of tracks with nothing in common. The "song" sections are dense, pulsating rhythms chock full of noises, bass, percussive elements and all manner of samples and miscellaneous sound snippets. Most of the other tracks are short blasts of the miscellaneous sounds and samples, but there are also a few ambient pieces here and there (track 97 in particular is ~6 minute ambient track). Although there's similarities throughout the disc, you don't hear or notice much repetition of sounds. The disc at times sounds like a sample disc, and I think that it was created with the intention of being able to listen to it in random order. Either way, you can tell that a great deal of time and care was taken in crafting and manipulating these sounds and I for one appreciate that in a world of cookie-cutter "industrial" bands. Sound looks to be just 1 part of the kr0p3r0m experience though ... go dig around the websites and check out the mp3 and equally impressive movie files, as well as audio software (much of which is for sale).
