Overall impression: ok, but disappointing. This is the first single from the upcoming album, "Actual Sounds + Voices". The orginal version (track 1) is a mid tempo big bass and beat number in the style of 80's era Meat Beat, but still has a helping of the recent textured jazz flare. There's everything you'd expect from a MBM song: lots of surging synth lines, fat bass, plenty of neat percussion/beat programming, lots of samples (if you're a TKK fan, you're already familar with most of the samples in this song) and no vocals. The Freddy Fresh Mix Mix adds more samples, different percussion and bits + pieces here and there to extend it out to 8+ minutes (a bit too long actually). Depth Charge Mix 1 I can't listen to due to a very annoying beeping sound that's rears it's ugly head throughout the mix ... it's also too repetitive and unnecessarily long for my liking. Dub Again is a nice remix by Dangers, a whole new arrangement and even more whacky samples. Depth Charge Mix 2 is better than the first, but still not all that exciting. There's several problems with this single imo: the Freddy Fresh and Depth Charges mixes don't do much for me (all three use sounds/percussion that annoy me), 5 versions of just 1 song is a bit tedious, using the *same* samples as a TKK song, and most importantly "Acid Again" is sort of a paint by numbers MBM song ... not one of Jack's more innovative compositions. I own all of Meat Beat's singles, and this is one of my least favorite. I do enjoy the Dangers' tracks though, and I look forward to hearing "Acid Again" among the rest of the tracks on "Actual Sounds + Voices". Mp3 snippets are available at both MBM sites below ...
