Naff Off (4:17)
Mysterious Ways (3:09)
Ooh La La (4:02)
Hole in the Wall (4:23)
Agogo (7:00)
Zip (5:11)Overall impression: good. "AGOGO" is one of a series of retrospective discs from the soon to be departing TVT Records KMFDM. "RETRO" is the other so far, a 'best of' compilation, while "AGOGO" is a collection of out of print, rare and 4 previously unreleased songs. It breaks down like this:
"Thank You" (1991) - a short, goofy, noisy intro piece like "Welcome" from "Naive". Interesting, but it wouldn't have fit
in on "Money" ..."Godlike" (1990) - this is the first recorded version with help from Paul Barker, Lee Popa, William Tucker, Mark Durante and Bill Rieflin. This one is my favorite version, very guitar heavy and the most similar to how it's done live. From the out
of print and in high demand "Naive" album ..."Virus - Dub" (1990) - also from "Naive", this version is a goofy dub remake that's not as cool as the single version, but is charming in it's own ...
"Rip the System" (1988) - from the "More & Faster" 12", a lot of the already very familar "White man, black man, rip the system" lyrics in this one. A good track though ...
"Naff Off" (1988) - another b-side to the "More & Faster" 12", a sort of primitive bass/piano driven instrumental ...
"Mysterious Ways" (1993) - from the "Shut Up Kitty" covers compilation, this is an amusing En Esch sung cover of the
huge U2 song. Guests include Charles Levi (TKK, Pigface) on bass guitar, Lee Popa, female backing vocalist Evie and
Mark Durante on guitars ..."Ooh La La" (1992) - from the "Hellraiser III" movie soundtrack, another En Esch vocal song is suprisingly good considering it was put together in 1 day to meet the deadline ...
"Hole in the Wall" (1993) - a commissioned remix of the "Angst" track by Scott Burns of Anthrax that adds a whole mess of guitar and extra drums to give the song a heavy metal feel (like his remix of "Move On" from the "Glory" single) ...
"Agogo" (1993) - an "Angst"-era instrumental that was abandoned (thankfully). A decent track, but the cheesy metal riff that pops up every now and then is a real turn off and it wouldn't have fit in on "Angst" very well ...
"Zip" (1985) - this is a rather amusing, abrasive industrial-funk number in the tradition of other early KMFDM with some real nice cut-up work and goofy vocals ("gonna get ya ... in the zip of my pants") ...
Overall, "AGOGO" is a must for KMFDM fans, especially those unfortunate ones who don't own the original "Naive" or the intelligent ones who passed up the otherwise wretched "Hellraiser III" and "Shut Up Kitty" discs. Some of these tracks wouldn't have worked on the albums they were intended for, and others are better left as b-sides ... regardless, this is a nice way to collect them all up into 1 historic package. The artwork/layout is a bit of a let down though, I'm looking forward to the new album with the traditional Brute coverup ...
