Overall impression: good. "Music.." is the debut full length album from BoC, via the UK's Warp Records label (and now available domestically for us U.S. folk). BoC seem to me to be making early '90's electronic music for the late '90's ... there's definitely a sound here similar to early Aphex Twin and Autechre albums. About a half dozen or so of the tracks (generally the shorter ones) are beatless, ambient synth melodies, whereas the other tracks are fully developed with beats and samples. BoC love to use vocals snippets, especially of children, hacking them up and spitting them out around the melodies and beats to great effect on several tracks. The overall vibe is pretty mellow and laid back, downtempo groove with lots of space in the mix ... a nice change from all the insanely hectic drill 'n bass that's practically taken over much of the 'IDM' genre. "Music.." doesn't have anything particularly mind blowing, but it's definitely a solid and enjoyable album through and through. The artwork is rather cool too, various shots of faceless hippie kids ...
