Hell (5:33)The decade old Techno Animal duo of Kevin Martin and Justin Broadrick return with an arsenal of real world rappers for their debut LP for Matador. Of the dozen tracks, half are instrumentals and the other half feature the vocalisms of some of the underground's finest: Rubberoom, Anti Pop Consortium (see also "Tragic Epilogue", "Shopping Carts Crashing"), Sonic Sum, Toastie Taylor (Ice, New Flesh for Old, Big Dada Sound), EL-P (ex-Company Flow, Def Jux label boss), Vaste Aire Kramer (Cannibal Ox, see also "The Cold Vein") and Dälek, plus some scratching by DJ Fred Ones. Martin and Broadrick's production is raw, gritty and often explosive - speaker crippling bass, beats, noise and distortion throughout - but also dynamic, taking in varied elements of hip hop, dub and Chain Reaction styled techno. Heavy, but not as thickly layered start to finish as Ice's benchmark setting behemoth "Bad Blood". The music is certainly well suited for all of these guys so it basically comes down to the listener's MC preferences, mine being the literate lessons always offered by APC, EL-P and Vaste Aire. The non vocal tracks do not disappoint either, they stand on their own and are just as rewarding as the vocalized ones. While "Bad Blood" is more my cup of tea, "The Brotherhood.." makes for a damn good second cup ...
