Walking Like Shadow (3:13)I literally laughed out loud when I first read about this, "the first joint album by Current Ninety Three and Nurse With Wound". While technically true, David Tibet (c93) and Steven Stapleton (NWW) have long shared credits on each others numerous works. They are essentially two sides of the same coin. Though this time, probably more than ever before, all of the typical characteristics of both projects can be found on one disc (or two if you were clever enough to order the early limited edition), including a joint artwork for the digipack. And the reasoning certainly lies in the near death experiences of Tibet which were the inspiration for this album as detailed in the insert and often out of body lyrics. And that is where my laughter ends as a solemn knowledge and beauty takes complete precedence. "Butterfly Drops" and "Walking Like Shadow" are Michael Cashmore and Tibet acoustic guitar/vocal bookends with Stapleton's trademark background washes. "Disintegrate.." gradually, gorgeously unfolds a desolate slow motion atmosphere as distant cymbals set a dirge like pace, Tibet's vocals creeping in almost unnoticed once six minutes pass. Stapleton lets loose in "Mothering Sunday.." with a disorienting assortment of curious samples and vocal treatments and a virtual freight train of sounds, drones and growls in "Nichts". "Die, Flip Or Go To India" returns to a more meditative, hallucinogenic state: soft rumblings, the reverberated taps of metal, obliterated/effected lyrics, pornographic moaning and other samples all drifting about the stereo field. The spoken mantra "when I crossed that sea is not known" is time stretched and deconstructed over the final few minutes. Stunning. It is remarkable how Tibet and colleagues are not only able to reveal and share such deeply personal experiences, but also do so with such vivid expression. It is life and death as art and art as a way of life ...
