Overall impression: excellent! En Esch is best known for his role in KMFDM, but in my opinion, his solo material really outclasses KMFDM in recent years. "Cheesy" covers a lot of ground and shows just who's got the ingenuity in KMFDM. Esch does a lot of the same stuff that KMFDM does, such as dance friendly numbers and hard rockers, but he does it with more flair and sex appeal. There's a lot of styles and sounds on this record you wont be hearing on most KMFDM records. "Go Insane" has a sexy funk to it, "Confidence" and "Gypsy Queen" are dance-y, "Cum", "Sweet Venus" and "Soy Botones" feature some interesting vocal twists by En ("Soy .." is in Spanish!), "Ich Bin" is based on the same sample loop that begins Pigface's "Fook" album, "Rule the Mob" is the ultimate sex rock song, "Daktari" is an awesome 12 minute jam by En and Andrew Weiss and Dean Wean of Ween, "Granola" is a slithering bass and organ groove, and "The Past .." sounds like a cheesy 70's tv show theme. Esch is an excellent programmer and arranger, and he puts his many friends to work (lots of different female vocals and great guitar work throughout). "Cheesy" was one of my favorite albums of '93 and still is to this day, I think a lot of people overlooked it, but I highly recommend it to everyone ... especially KMFDM fans who are getting a bit bored by the repetitive and dull albums of the past several years. Also, be sure to check out the equally cool "Confidence" single if possible.
