The Tide (3:37)This is the first ever live recording of Backworld from the April 6, 2001 Bloomsbury Theatre, London, England show supporting Antony and the Johnsons and Current Ninety Three. That particular night Backworld were Joseph Budenholzer (vocals, guitar), Julia Kent (cello - ex-Rasputina, Antony and the Johnsons), Paul Geluso (bass) and Todd Cohen (drums - Antony & The Johnsons) with contributions by Robert Lee and Rose McDowall of Sorrow. There's nothing particularly exceptional about Budenholzer's melodic, mostly subdued gothic-folk lullabies but they do sound lovely here, the band being perfectly in balance and in sync and the recording being crystal clear. The near half hour set is drawn primarily from the latest two albums, 1999's "Anthems From the Pleasure Park" and 2001's "Of Silver Sleep". And a half hour seems about right. Budenholzer's voice and lyrics are a bit one-dimensional and grow tiresome so the addition of Sorrow/Coil/Current 93 chauntress Rose McDowall is a blessing for the finest song, "The Devil's Plaything" (also recently released in 7" and CD versions by Piski Disk). Nice stuff but surely only a pacifier for what came afterwards with Antony and c93's sets. Budenholzer has also recently worked with Jarboe as documented on her recent "Dislocation" CD-R ...
