This single disc priced, double disc set compiles the past and future of the Justin Broadrick (Godflesh, Techno Animal, Ice, Solaris B.C., Final) founded Lo Fibre label. Disc 1 is comprised of tracks from 1997-8, which shows what's in store for the future and disc 2 is comprised of tracks from 1995-7, considered the best of the label's past 12" releases. The music here ranges from minimal drone/techno (most of disc 2) to dense and abrasive percussion onslaughts (most of disc 1) or something inbetween. Some songs have a funky shuffle, some slap your ears with drum 'n bassish beats, some just sort of plunk along for a while then end. "Hollow" and "Linseed" stand out because they have more of a Can/Tortoise like band sound. Everything here has a sort of gritty, lo-fi industrial feel to it. I find disc 2 to be rather disappointing though, these artists' take on mimimalist techno and drone doesn't grab me like Basic Channel or Plastikman do, and the Sidewinder tracks are nice but too short and underdeveloped. Disc 1 more than makes up for 2 though, the Torque, The Bug, AKA, Line and Fruitcake tracks in particular are all very interesting ... I'm looking forward to albums from all of them. Once again, kudos to Invisible for putting together a single disc priced, double disc compilation as an introduction to a newly distributed label ...
