Murder Inc:  Atkins/Bechdel/Connelly/Ferguson/Raven/Walker

In 1992 Chris Connelly and Martin Atkins (both of Pigface, Ministry, the Revolting Cocks, etc.) collaborated with off and on Killing Joke members John Bechdel, "Big" Paul Ferguson, Paul Raven and Geordie Walker for a short lived project that produced an EP, an album and a handful of live dates.  This collection makes for the 3rd time that the album has been released ... originally on Invisible in '92, then via the Futurist label the following year (with a re-arranged track listing and 2 new re-mixes by Justin Broadrick and Paul Barker), and now, once again, via Invisible.  "Locate.." gathers the original Invisible album and "Corpuscle" EP (which includes 3 wonderful mixes by J.G. Thirwell, aka Foetus) and adds 5 live tracks and a throwaway "joke" track.  Musically Murder Inc. is somewhere in-between a slower version of Killing Joke (minus Jaz Coleman), Chris Connelly's raw solo album from around the same time "Phenobarb Bambalam" and a bit of Pigface's noise, samples and double drumming.  It's a big, ugly, heavy and grinding rhythmic machine with Walker's wall of sound guitar, Raven's driving bass lines, Bechdel's samples and atmospheres and Ferguson and Atkins double drum set attack.  Connelly contributes his always poetic lyrics and the vocals range from a slow and smooth croon to a barking, raving lunatic ... whatever is appropriate for each particular song.  "Mrs. Whiskey Name" stands out as it's a good old fashioned drinking song featuring only drums and Connelly's heavily Scottish accented lead vocals.  The live tracks are rather raw around the edges and chaotic at times with the vocals very up front in the mix ... they're certainly not as polished as the studio versions but are still worthwhile.  "The Joke That Kills", obviously a play on words, is simply a minute or so of band members talking and, incidentally, the source for a bizarre spoken sample used on Pigface's "Welcome to Mexico" live album.  So, why another release you say?  You've got me.  I do think the originals are out of print though.  Regardless, this is a nice set that comes in a sharp looking double foldup digipack ... and is especially good for anyone who doesn't already own any of the prior releases.  The completist in me had to get it despite already owning everything here save for the live tracks.  Another possible reason for this re-release is a currently in the works project by Martin Atkins, Chris Connelly, Geordie Walker and Jah Wobble (ex-PiL bassist) entitled The Damage Manual, due out later this year on Invisible ...
