(14:37)Mouse on Mars are Andi Toma & Jan St. Werner featuring F.X. Randomiz: digital soundprocessing, sample support, Dodo Nkishi: drums, Harald "Sack" Ziegler: french horn, brass arrangements, Perry White: bass clarinet, flute, Scott White: cello, violin, Matty Arouse: fiddle, Markus Dirk: bass trumpet.
What planet are these guys from? I want to move there immediately. "Niun Niggung" is the proper followup to 1997's superb "Autoditacker". Toma and Werner take the spirit, rhythmic complexity and hybrid musical nature of early 70's Can, inject the electronic wackiness of Aphex Twin and Autechre and effortlessly fuse it all together into a playful pop package. The album begins deceptively with the sublime guitar, bass guitar and horn melodies of "Download Sofist", dressed up in electronic bits and bobbles . "Yippie" kicks in the more easily recognizable Mouse on Mars sound: complex "techno" beat and bass rhythms, watery synth sounds, quirky slabs of electronic sound, etc. Some comments on specific tracks: "Super.." adds some amusing, unintelligble vocoded vocals, "Albion Rose" is slow and jazzy with gentle horn arrangements, "Mompou" is a brief, doodling ambient interlude, "Distroia" is just plain aggro with a very upbeat tempo and noisy, distorted synths and "Circloid.." is even more brutal. The final indexed track continues to end track 12 for about 10 seconds, then 12 or so minutes of silence and finally a few minutes of quiet drum meanderings. Not sure why they bothered with that. But all in all this another fantastic outing from Mouse on Mars, nobody does this quite like them. Attention to detail, original sounds, careful crafting of "songs" ... fun music for your mind and/or your dancing feet. "Niun Niggung" is a contender for my top 10 of '99 list ...
