Thighpaulsandra, classically trained pianist and former member of Spiritualized, is the most recent addition to the inner circle of Coil. His most notable contributions to the ever expanding Coil catalog include "Musick to Play in the Dark" Vols. 1 and 2 and "The Queens of the Circulating Library". This 2 track CD EP, housed in a black plastic clam shell case, was originally released at the already legendary Time Machines (aka Coil) concert in London this past April. On this disc, his solo debut, he is aided by the text and vocals of John Balance, also of Coil, and in some other capacity by Hans Jürgen Raüsch. "Black Nurse" has 3 distinct sections. It begins with 8 minutes of evolving, deep synth drone and noise flow. For the next few minutes it drastically shifts gears into a sort of bizarre yet structured synth pop song with effected vocals (presumably Thighpaulsandra's) and a simple piano / drum machine rhythm. For the remainder of the track, processed digital swirls and a new mellow beatbox rhythm are topped off with sporadic piano riffs and barely audible, heavily processed spoken words. "Tudor Fruits" begins as a journey through delayed horn blasts, fragments of twinkling metal percussion, reversed samples and synthesis. By the 9th minute all that remains are ghostly synth pads and two separate sets of spoken words. Beautiful. The horns then reprise in the final minutes. "Some Head" is, not surprisingly, of the same quality that most all Coil product is. Coil are very lucky to have Thighpaulsandra in their ranks and I do hope this isn't the last of his solo output ...
