FANTASTIC TWINS Lost in Germany 12"
The fourth AF Trax comes from The Fantastic Twins, who has the following to say: "This EP is a small collection of works I crafted over the past couple of years in the process of working on my live show. I have been performing versions of these tracks countless times and yet never played them twice the same way. To me, they have been material in constant motion, so shaping them into a 'finished' form was a risky challenge . . . May the music on this EP be, I hope, a possible answer to its own title."

HANCOCK, HERBIE Fat Albert Rotunda LP
"If Fat Albert Rotunda sounds like the most fun Herbie Hancock had in his early years as a band leader, it should. He composed the music for the pilot of the children's television show Fat Albert, redirecting the post-bop jazz he honed in a five-year stint with the Miles Davis Quintet towards the R&B and funk styles with which he was becoming enamored. The result was a playful, joyous album in which Hancock clearly had a great time. The same goes for the rest of his Sextet, which by the time of recording in late 1969 was both razor sharp and confidently loose from rehearsing and touring. Flying high with three horn players -- Joe Henderson on sax and flute, Garrett Brown on trombone and Johnny Coles on trumpet and flugelhorn -- alongside Hancock's soaring Fender Rhodes electric piano, the group could swing freely on a track like the rousing 'Fat Mama' and emote precisely on the subtle 'Tell Me A Bedtime Story.' Their versatility won over Warner Bros. who signed Hancock after hearing these infectious compositions and watched Fat Albert Rotunda climb the Billboard Jazz Charts. In subsequent years, Hancock would expand and experiment with the Sextet's sound, creating two more albums for Warner Bros. Regardless of where he went next, Fat Albert Rotunda is still, 50 years later, about as fun as music gets."

CAT #: ASH 302LP
"After releasing their Warner Bros. debut, the Herbie Hancock Sextet underwent a major transformation in the early '70s. Over the course of a year, every member was replaced (except Herbie Hancock himself and bassist Buster Williams) and each adopted Swahili names. (Williams even led the group in occasional sessions of Buddhist chanting.) Hancock chose the moniker Mwandishi (meaning 'composer'), and the Sextet became unofficially known as the Mwandishi Band. The lineup's first album -- simply titled Mwandishi -- reflects Hancock's new aesthetic and spiritual directions. Stretching out from the R&B/jazz fusion of Fat Albert Rotunda, the pianist would draw inspiration from his time with Miles Davis (whose classic Bitches Brew came out in 1970) as well as through the creative relationship he had formed with producer David Rubinson (known for his work with Moby Grape and Santana). 'Ostinato (Suite for Angela),' dedicated to political activist Angela Davis, is an extended jam with stunning rhythmic complexity -- enhanced by studio effects, such as Echoplex delay. On the ballad 'You'll Know When You Get There,' Hancock's tight arrangements are saturated in reverb, which gives an ever-shifting dimensionality. Side-long closer 'Wandering Spirit Song,' written by trombonist Julian Priester (aka Pepo Mtoto), goes even further out: alternating between dynamic soloing and group improvisation, the Sextet fully manifests the radical potential of their collective identity/energy. Mwandishi remains a bold and expansive statement, even after nearly 50 years."

"Crossings was the second release by the Herbie Hancock Sextet lineup known as the Mwandishi Band, following 1971's Mwandishi which stretched Hancock's already-adventurous writing and expanded the music through post-production. This approach would play an even larger role on Crossings, the pianist's final album for Warner Bros. For two of Crossings' three pieces ('Quasar' and 'Water Torture'), Hancock took basic instrumental tracks to Patrick Gleeson's Different Fur Studios, hoping to learn how to play the Moog synthesizer. Instead, Hancock let Gleeson contribute layers of sound to both pieces. On 'Quasar,' a ballad in 7/4 time, Gleeson extends the horn playing of Bennie Maupin, Julian Priester and Eddie Henderson through electronic accents, while on 'Water Torture,' he provides a ghostly counter melody on the Mellotron, a keyboard that utilizes samples from string instruments. These studio enhancements give Crossings an otherworldly dimension, making the album feel bigger and more fantastical, yet the Sextet's playing -- recorded without much in way of edits or overdubs -- keeps everything grounded. Indeed, Gleason's additions are often so natural that it is hard to pick out what's acoustic and what's synthesized. While the Mwandishi Band's tenure was unfortunately short-lived, the advances Herbie Hancock made with them still sound exciting today and would propel him into further inventive territory with future jazz-funk project The Headhunters."

MALONE, KALI Organ Dirges 2016-2017 LP
Repressed!! Unique, engrossing room recordings of Kaliff pipe organ dirges played by composer, sound technician, and multi-instrumentalist Kali Malone, released in early 2018 on a super limited tape run and now finally pressed up on vinyl for wider public consumption. Very little in 2018 is as elusive or magical as this record. In four pieces recorded at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, it's the characteristics of the room itself that add a crucial dimension to these pieces, sounding worlds away from the cavernous reverb associated with church acoustics. Instead, these dry recordings bring out all the fragile warmth and intimacy that's rarely associated with this multi-faceted, sacred instrument. Removed from its traditional, godly environment -- the effect is startling. The magick also lies in Kali's capacity to produce rich, swirling, gaseous overtones. There's a preternatural sensitivity toward these peripheral sounds, coaxing intoxicating spectrums of quivering hi-register fluctuations and sonorous bass at a pace that draws the listener in and seems to reduce everything around to a meditative serenity. Organ Dirges stands in a line of records borne out of serendipity rather than any planned, grandiose gesture. Recorded more or less off the cuff over just a few days onto a portable zoom, it's a testament to Kali's compositional instinct that these four pieces sound so resolved and purposeful. Every small detail sounds intentional without being controlled, right down to the almost unbearably moving disintegration at the very end of closing piece "Fifth Worship", like a slow descent into darkness. It's interesting to note that Organ Dirges was first played at a huge iron mine, the acoustics once again altering the perception of these alchemical pieces. There's a contrasting experience when you play this record in different spaces -- on headphones, quietly at night in small rooms, loud on monitors in large spaces -- always revealing something new, always transporting you somewhere else. Mastered at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin.

KONGAS Afrodesia 12"
Cerrone goes back to his roots and reforms Kongas, his first Afro-rock band which sound is dominated by drums and percussions. With this project he explored through the '70s the major influences that would eventually forge the singular "Cerrone sound" and disco music more broadly. With three originals and an exclusive new track, Afrodesia shines a light on Cerrone's cult formation and the seven young musicians who play with him today, standing as the heirs of a timeless sense of hedonism.

HALL, ROSALIND Drift Cassette
Drift is a free fall album consisting of three compositions invoking a sense of hovering expansion. Deeply spacious yet tightly compacted sound movements create holding patterns that slowly shift and evolve. Cycles fall in-and-out of sync while atmospheres envelop time, appearing on the periphery before being subsumed back into space. The compositions utilize modified alto saxophone with spring reverb attachment, synthesizers, percussion, field recordings and electronic processing. The saxophone is played with an acoustic spring reverberation preparation to produce multiple feedback tones, pitch beating, and metallic distortion. Using sampling and pitch shifting techniques, the instrument and its presence of breath act as the glue that binds the pieces.

VA Noises LP
Cortizona present the first time LP reissue of Noises, originally released on Kamikaze in 1977. Around the time Marc Moulin played his last concerts with Placebo, he met the young musician Michel Moers at the jazz venue "Les Lundis Hortense" in Brussels in 1977. Impressed by his vocal delivery Marc invited him to the small studio of his friend Dan Lacksman to work on the songs, "Ma Mère Etait Propre", "Musaque Etniq", and "Il Est Heures". A few weeks and recording sessions later the trio decide to start an electronic music group together -- named Telex --, and to release the miniatures of Michel Moers on the compilation Noises, on the very short-lived label Kamikaze, he introduced (and also ended) the same year in November. Noises is a rather uncommon collection of songs that ranges from pieces with stunning vocal harmonies of an early Ilona Chale (who later also would be a member of the band Cos) and her brother Eric, a hypnotic chant where Marc Moulin blends a speech of Belgian King Boudewijn I with reel-to-reel tape techniques to a trance anthem, zonin' the King's voice already into a Moskow Diskow-frequence, or Michel Moers discovering an unknown Deliverance vibe with a mouth harp and flute, Daniel Plasschaert stretching out an amazing new world in only 50 seconds, next level field recordings by Robert Altaber to Ariel Kalma who transforms a poem by Thibet Marpa in a mesmerizing ambient composition. An amazing Belgian compilation still oscillating 40 years later into the pop waves. 180 gram vinyl. Contains two new postcards as an insert, including liner notes by Michel Moers and the original lyrics of "Aman" and drawing by Ariel Kalma.

Debut EP by Dampé, a studio and live project from South East London. "Peach Shuffle" is a made-for-the-floor, broken beat work-out that has this great warped and chopped Persian vocal sample, followed by "St James' Road", a crunchy live Rhodes jam. "Move Me", featuring Laura Steel, is all garage-infused vocal loops and singing bowls, and acts as an experiment-come-DJ tool. "Carn" is a super-swung hip hop beat featuring SMBD (Simbad) providing additional keys. "Zongo Junction, At Night", a late night roller with material pieced together from saturated CR 78 samples and field recordings. Features Nebraska remix.

DOPE FEAT. FUCK AUTHORITY Seven Disquieting Dirges CD
Produced and directed by Julian Cope. Who's ready for this epic new twist in the Dope saga? Yes, Dope have teamed up with Bristol's anarchic double bassist Fuck Authority to deliver the most rustic musical onslaught since The Wicker Man soundtrack, as glockenspiels, hunting horns, and hand-drums conspire to orchestrate Fuck Authority's superb bowed sub bass themes on titles such as "Cornish Funeral Paths" and the 16-minute "The Ranters". Featuring seven tracks in all, this contrary CD release brings to mind the acoustic scrapings of Wolfmangler, or perhaps the endlessly repetitive themes of Padstow's Obby Oss. Don't expect a vinyl release, neither -- this stuff would just make your needle jump out of the grooves. Dope featuring Fuck Authority is the kind of music that could inspire a whole new genre of young musicians. Buy one for your fave musical nephew or niece and watch them make a cult of themselves.

A-SUN AMISSA Ceremony In The Stillness CD
Ceremony In The Stillness is the new album from A-Sun Amissa on Gizeh Records and Consouling Sounds. For their fourth album, A-Sun Amissa plunge deeper than before. Guitars come to the fore, and heavy, distorted chords are present from the off, complemented by desolate ambient passages of sound. The claustrophobic atmospheres remain but combine with a new density and sonic experimentation to present a huge leap forward in structure and composition. Ceremony In The Stillness hints at themes from the previous three outings while pushing the project into new territories. The intricate nuances and lulling melodies from Desperate In Her Heavy Sleep (GZH 037CD, 2012) reappear while the billowing guitars of You Stood Up for Victory, We Stood Up for Less (GZH 044LP, 2013) are referenced throughout. In comparison to The Gatherer (2017), there is a firmer direction here as the album weaves through elements of doom, dark ambient, and post-rock, placing its unique mark firmly into the ears of the listener. A-Sun Amissa is the project of Gizeh founder Richard Knox (The Rustle of the Stars, Shield Patterns, and Glissando). Knox takes a central role here, but we see several collaborators contributing to the record. As album opener "The Black Path" unfurls, the cello of Jo Quail creeps through the thick wall of guitar to offer a moment of calm before the song comes to life with the introduction of drums from Archelon's TJ Fairfax. Alongside a dense and hypnotically repetitive riff, it's A-Sun Amissa's heaviest moment to date as the song collapses under its own weight to leave a crumbling and uneasy passage of cello and guitar drone. Intertwining guitars take center stage on the "With Wearied Eyes" as the atmosphere harks back to the band's earlier work. "The Skulk", meanwhile, evokes The Gatherer as David McLean's saxophone unravels around the ondes Martenot of Christine Ott. The record then takes a turn as "No Perception of Light"'s soporific opening gives way to a mesmerizing beat which develops into a wall of crunching guitars and electronics before "Remembrancer" closes with chiming guitars and bowed strings before evolving into a haunting orchestral outro that concludes the record. It's clear that Knox is comfortable being on the outside looking in, and in expanding A-Sun Amissa's sonic palette, it only adds to the intrigue of what comes next.

Manta Ray is the first release of Snowdrops, a French-based keyboard duo composed by Mathieu Gabry and Christine Ott (Yann Tiersen, Tindersticks, Foudre !); this opus is the soundtrack they composed for Phuttiphong Aroonpheng's film of the same name, which has won several awards including Best Film in the Orizzonti section at the Venice Film Festival. Strangers in a strange land... Borders, belonging and banishment are the issues in Manta Ray. The Thai film trains a poetic look at the void of humanity through the story of two men, a Thai fisherman with peroxide blonde hair and a nameless stranger stuck in a foreign land and supposed to be a Rohingya of Myanmar, whose continuing persecution is constituting one of the biggest human rights scandals of our time. The realism of this story melds with magical elements into a complex whole leaving plenty of room for interpretation. Aroonpheng's first feature is a mesmerizing experience, sometimes compared to Weerasethakul's Uncle Boonmee (2010) and Hitchcock's Vertigo (1958). Snowdrops' soundtrack brings another dimension to Aroonpheng's movie. The duo was especially focused to build their sound here on a frame of keyboards of different generations (Ondes Martenot, Mellotron, MS2000 or Altered keyboards). The color is sometimes dark ("The Mangrove", "Losing A Friend To Death"), sometimes surrealistic ("Lights In The Deep"), and in the case of "Weird Dance", a suggestion of romance between the two main characters on the rhythm of a dreamy electronic tune. The French duo also re-arranged a composition ("Hot Springs") by renowned Thai singer Rasmee, who features as an actor in the movie. Always moving in a physical and sensorial approach, Snowdrops were also involved in the sound design of the movie, as the music is often merging with the other auditive elements and with the images themselves as an organic painting; this hypnotic experiment finds its climax at the end of the movie, with Ott's piano running wild and Gabry's soundscapes swirling in between "The Harmony Of Rohingya's Voices" in a breathtaking scene. File under: avant-garde, electronic, experimental, modern classical, soundtrack.

CARETAKER, THE Everywhere At The End Of Time LP
2019 black vinyl repress. Everywhere At The End of Time is the first in a series of six albums by The Caretaker, aka James Leyland Kirby, slowly cataloguing the stages of early onset dementia. Each album will reveal new points of progression, loss and disintegration, progressively falling further and further towards the abyss of complete memory loss and nothingness. Viewing dementia as a series of stages can be a useful way to understand the illness, but it is important to realize that this only provides a rough guide to the progress of the condition. Drawing on a recorded history of 20 years of recollected memories, this is one final journey and study into recreating the progression of dementia through sound. As the first in the series - and despite its typically frayed loop construction, this volume is the most lucid - subsequent instalments will continue to move into faded obscurity and material erosion. Mastered and cut by Andreas Lupo Lubich. Artwork by Ivan Seal.
PRICE: $25.50
CARETAKER, THE Everywhere At The End Of Time - Stage 2 LP
2019 black vinyl repress. The second of six albums issued under the title Everywhere At The End Of Time, The Caretaker's fictional first person account of life with early onset dementia, takes a more wistful tack as our protagonist gradually realizes that all is not well and begins to rummage deeper into the recesses of his memory, masking emotions of grief, loss, fear, and uncertainty by deeper dwelling in the recesses of a decaying mind. As The Caretaker's short term memory functions begin to more rapidly erode, the loop-based punctuation of previous installments begin to subtly unravel, leading his mind to drift off and ponder fuller segments of tea dance strings and horns which appear uncannily more inviting, seductive, and now even more tangible than the abbreviated reels of earlier editions. Loop points wilt away in autumnal greys and russet rustles as new information becomes more difficult to process, back pedaling down memory lane toward an opaque smudge of half-forgotten/remembered spaces, places and un/familiar faces which provide more comfort and clarity than the world around him. It feels strange to recommend undergoing this experience, albeit in such an impressionistic and detached manner, but it somehow feels like a conversely enlightening one for these strange, disingenuous and unpredictable end times that we inhabit right now. Artwork by Ivan Seal. Mastered and cut by Lupo.
PRICE: $25.50
CARETAKER, THE Everywhere At The End Of Time - Stage 3 LP
2019 black vinyl repress. The third of a six album cycle cataloguing The Caretaker's fictional first person account of life with early onset dementia, presenting some of the last coherent memories before confusion fully rolls in and the grey mists fade away. In this crepuscular, autumnal phase, recollections phosphoresce, and wilt in advancing stages of entropic decay, steadily approaching a winter of no return. Continuing to mirror the progression of dementia, using nostalgia for ballroom as an allegory of the disease, The Caretaker's musical flow in places becomes more disturbed, isolated, broken, and distant. Singular memories, and all their connotations, begin to atrophy and calcify, crumbling away with each rotation of the record -- sometimes in curt scene cuts, others in quietly breathtaking reverbed fizzles; like tea lights extinguished, never to flicker again. These are the last stages of awareness before you enter the post awareness stages, where those memories become completely detached from comprehension. On Stage 3, the haunted ballroom's repertoire becomes increasingly muddled, peeling off in recursive contrails from the gestures of "Back There Benjamin", to snag on the stylus in starkly reverberant knots on "Hidden Seas Buried Deep", or worn down to calloused nubs such as "To The Minimal Great Hidden", and "Sublime Beyond Loss", all leading up to some of the project's most uncanny detachments in "Libet Delay" and the coruscating brass shimmer of "Mournful Cameraderie", which beautifully suggest the mercurial nature of memory and its recollection. Artwork by Ivan Seal. Mastered and cut by Lupo.
PRICE: $33.00
CARETAKER, THE Everywhere At The End Of Time - Stage 4 2LP
2019 black vinyl repress. The Caretaker slips beyond recognition in the first "post awareness" stage of Everywhere At The End Of Time. The ability to recall singular memories gives way to confusions and horror. It's the beginning of an eventual process where all memories begin to become more fluid through entanglements, repetition, and rupture. Though the metaphoric device of worn-down ballroom 78s and Jack Nicholson's descent into madness in The Shining (1980), The Caretaker connotes the transitory cognitive breakdown of moderate into severe late stage dementia. Memories of the good times are recollected in glitching pyknoleptic flashes as the music struggles to follow consistent lines of thought, instead fluctuating between a fractured mosaic of ideas and elusive emotive gestures, but still occasionally able to gather coherent thoughts. In aesthetic, the sieve-like mind state of Stage 4 vacillates a serene sort of psychedelia with utterly paranoid and petrifying mental subsidence. Smudged traces of sublimated musical hall memories give way to shocking tracts of atonality and discord with runaway rhythmic logic, perpetually tumbling farther into states of mind perhaps best compared with K-Hole-like dimensions or the babble of after-hours psychonautic journeys. The concision of previous stages is here replaced with wandering, side-long tracts. Three of those are titled "Post Awareness Confusions" and correspondingly explore and reflect agitated, irritable mindsets as they navigate an ephemeral, confusing complexity of structures. The other piece is called "Temporary Bliss State" and starkly contrasts the other parts in a coherently lush traverse of ambient crackle and glittering melody... Artwork by Ivan Seal. Mastered and cut by Lupo. Double-LP comes in gatefold sleeve.
PRICE: $33.00
CARETAKER, THE Everywhere At The End Of Time - Stage 5 2LP
2019 black vinyl repress. The penultimate release in the series, Stage 5 of The Caretaker's Everywhere At The End of Time charts severe levels of musical/mental deterioration and sensory detachment through four extended, smudged and hallucinatory side-long pieces. Nearing the end, Stage 5 sees our protagonist enter a near-permanent state of confusion and horror. Mirroring the endemic deterioration of dementia's latter phases, one is pulled through the most extreme entanglements in the series so far; repetition and ruptures, barely maintaining a connection to waking life and a sense of self. In the most classic sense, one becomes witness to an abandonment and dissolution of ego, as the mulch of bygone 78s totally loses itself in a way that connotes misfiring synapses failing to properly relay information at advanced levels of the disease. It feels as though one's skull is being scraped out, uncovering hellish layers of accreted sensation and mulched imagery, occasionally recognizing calmer patterns, only for them to fray into the ether before it's possible to parse and dwell on them. At this point it's also perhaps worth pointing out the uncannily profound synchronicity between the timelines of Everywhere At The End of Time and Brexit, which both started in 2016 and are due to wrap up in spring 2019. It should be no stretch of the imagination to read into their parallel progression from nostalgia and historic/collective amnesia, to progressive dementia and complete obliteration of (the) sense(s). Mastered and cut by Lupo, artwork by Ivan Seal.

Ever since hearing Pete Tong announce "Chica Wappa" as his Essential New Tune back in 2004, Huntleys + Palmers have been following the bold Alex Smoke (aka Wraetlic) on his musical journey. Coming from Glasgow, the label and the artist have shared a lot of common influences, both from within and of the city. The label has Alex to thank for introducing and strengthening their love for the likes of Villalobos, Rhythm & Sound, Carl Craig, and Actress, amongst others. Although he was a familiar face on the "minimal" scene, he always operated on his own terms and that's a through-line that's been much admired throughout his career. Not only is he comfortable releasing techno on Soma and R&S, he's produced for ballet, films and even the NHS. Over the years, Alex has played at a few seminal parties alongside the likes of Oni Ayhun, James Holden, Helena Hauff, and Veronica Vasicka. It was thus a delight to be approached by him to work on Ad Absurdum together and it's been really exciting to hear it evolve over time. It would be arrogant to compare it to Thom Yorke's The Eraser (2006), but it certainly occupies a similar world. To still be producing innovative and inspiring albums 15 years into a career is no mean feat in this age and it's a great honor to welcome such a musical hero on to the label. As with the last Auntie Flo album, there will also be a special remix package with a swarm of favored producers of the moment. 180 gram vinyl.

"Seventh Sign" was initially intended an experiment in cello recordings through an effects pedal but ended up being track brimming with pure techno groove. "Second Skin" is the perfect finale embracing epic elements of broken beat and even IDM sensibilities with a gorgeously misguided horn leading the march.
PRICE: $14.50
Kompakt open the Speicher gates to Swedish export La Fleur. La Fleur fulfills the difficult matrimony of bridging minimal-house percussion with deep emotive groove on "Tears". In her own words, "I wanted to create a feeling of melancholy, the dreamer wanted this dream to be true and then on waking up realized that it was all just a dream. Hence the vocal, washing my dreams away with tears." John Monkman and James Monro are an unlikely pairing in the best of ways. They offer "Pesto Punk", a raging conglomeration of delinquent-techno madness.

Het Interstedelijk Harmoniumverbond ("The Intercity Harmonium Alliance") is the collaborative construction carrying Glen Steenkiste, Brecht Ameel, David Edren, and Steve Marreyt on their quest for yet undiscovered dimensions of drone. Each member resides in one of the Flemish province capital cities (Brussels, Ghent, Antwerp, and Bruges), they all play harmonium and share the genuine interest for temporality in music. Initiated from Steenkiste's idea to expand the solo harmonium of Hellvete into a more dialectic and immersive format, this new league had its premiere on Eastern Daze V festival in November 2018. The release is an uncompromised gesture claiming one of today's main scarcities: the liberated and emancipated attention. The drone sound has a rare capacity to reflect upon the most delicate patterns of the human experience of time, hitting straight to its core: duration. Long, layered tones of four harmoniums stretch from past towards future, and from emotionally charged warmth of an ensemble to the coldness of post-human electronics. They trigger an uninterrupted flow of music and call for an intensified and extended ritual of contemplative listening on multiple levels. In regard to that, the recording process was carried out with an ambition to capture both micro sounds and detailed textures from each of the harmoniums, as well as the surround sound blended through the acoustics of space. The record comes with the extensive liner notes by the renowned essayist Sven Vitse (in Dutch). Edition of 300.

HEIDL/HOMO LUDENS, RALPH Moments of Resonance LP
After the first wave of artists that have broken the ice with their way of combining contemporary symphonic music with electronica and jazz on the European side (Olafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm, Max Richter), now there is a new generation of young musician breaking boundaries on a new level, especially in Germany. These 20-25-year-olds don't just imitate what the bigger names in the scene have done but develop the style in a totally different way, adding new ideas instead of just copying what's come before. This new wave of artists have a huge musical knowledge, have studied at the best music academies, learned to play "classical" instruments and know how to improvise on a very high level. They have been raised in two different worlds, studying the history of (contemporary) classical music and also being influenced by what's happening in electronica over the last 25 years. Ralph Heidel is one of these new kids; coming from Munich, the 25-year-old studied saxophone and composition at the Munich Academy Of Music (think Julliard or Berklee). He graduated in 2018, learning everything about the music of composers like Ives, Schnittke, or Ligeti. At the same time he grew up with the music of producers like Alvo Noto, Boards Of Canada, Jon Hopkins, and others. He also comes from a family of jazz musicians and has grown up listening to the collection of his father. In his own music all this comes together. Moments Of Resonance is seven compositions full of brilliant little ideas, harmonic complexity, unheard music surprises, clever citations, dramatic evolutions, big explosive moments, meditative moments, and euphoric high points. This album is an emotional work of art for strings, saxophone, drums, bass and electronics. Heidel and his seven-piece ensemble Homo Ludens connect contemporary chamber music with electronica, ambient, post-rock and avant-garde jazz. Everything is composed and improvised; nothing is sampled. One will find wild punk-jazz parts that recall Zorn or Mahavishnu Orchestra, as well as romantic passages that recall European impressionistic composers like Ravel or Debussy. But nothing is imitated, everything gets broken up through an expressive new way of using harmonization and melodic composing. Sometimes the band flies through an ambient and drone universe but one moment later the music evolves into an explosive, impossible-to-describe musical moment. 180 gram vinyl; includes printed inner sleeve.

HALO, LAUREL Raw Silk Uncut Wood LP
2019 repress. "What works reliably is to know the raw silk, hold the uncut wood. Need little. Want less. Forget the rules. Be untroubled. Laurel Halo presents six instrumental pieces that form a meditative, cinematic listening experience. Inspired by recent film score work for Metahaven and Ursula Le Guin's translation of the Tao Te Ching. Featuring cello work by Oliver Coates and percussion by Eli Keszler. Working in abstraction leads to a deeper longing for touch and closeness. The tactile sensation of struck organ keys and bowed strings, wood and felt on drum heads. Smoke and dirt and stone. Febrile and tactile, hairy and hissy. A clover of highway onramps, a continuous flow, like old leaves melting on their way down a stream at the back of a house. Constant contradiction, the truth's nowhere."

With his remix, Italian Jo Pariota transforms the track into a veritable Detroit house groover. JK's "Being Neglected As An Artist" is a moody deep house affair including jazzy keys. The "Rare Sun Recall Mix" by .WS takes you places: riding out on an up-tempo tribal beat, it slowly starts to fall apart before vanishing into ambient bliss.

HOOD, ROBERT Reflector/Rotate 12"
Hot on the heels of the Floorplan vs. Mark Broom double-header on EPM, Robert Hood is back in full minimal techno mode. "Reflector" picks up from the peak-time driving pulse as shown throughout his Paradigm Shift project on Dekmantel giving plenty of big room punch just when needed. Euphoric synths and key changes add to Hood's usual minimal palate, adding a few goose bumps moments on the way. "Rotate" pairs this back-to-basics as a solid beat gives way to muted keys and subtle atmospherics, throwing a deeper shadow across the dancefloor.

AGITATION FREE Fragments (Mint Colored Vinyl) LP
"When the band Agitation Free came together in 1967 as a result of the merging of two Berlin rock groups, one of the most interesting groups in a dawning independent German music scene was created. With their improvisations between rock, jazz and new music, Agitation Free -- soon relegated to the not so flattering category of 'Krautrock' -- made musical forays into areas that few of their fellow German musicians had ever penetrated. At a time when most in Germany were still orienting themselves as closely as possible to Anglo-American musical formats, Agitation Free found a completely new and very original form of musical expression. Starting with their debut album Malesch and the album 2nd, Agitation Free delivered a fascinating sound, influenced not least by the manifold impressions from a Near East tour. The band moved toward a form of meta-music, a weaving of exotic-sounding compositions. The album has been justly regarded as a milestone in the genre, especially abroad. Looking back, it's evident that the Agitation Free was one of the most important bands of the experimental circle known as the 'Berlin School', and a career springboard for a whole slew of musicians. At the same time, this policy of changing personnel also meant risking that the band couldn't keep itself together over the long run. Agitation Free consciously took this risk in order to remain as close as possible to their own concept -- free from commercial pressure or concessions to the latest trends and modes. Collector's item! Limited (500) in colored (mint) vinyl."

Fresh off much essential reissues of his seminal debut album for Peacefrog, The Electric Funk Machine, and the initially 2017-released The Light Years Reworks, which featured an incredible cast of remixers, UK techno mastermind Luke Slater resurfaces as Planetary Assault Systems with a crisp double-package of his signature deep-rolling, hypnotic big-room churners. As its name suggests, Straight Shooting takes no byway to get its point across. Lifting off with the bleepy, outer space-y thrust of "Beam Rider", Slater's new outing stings like a straight-out nasty shot of adrenaline right in the ticker. Going for the jugular with its ever-impactful mix of pummeling kicks, bloodthirsty bass combers, and frenzied electronics blinking like signals freshly emerged from a long drift across cold, hostile wormholes, PAS further proves he navigates in a parallel dimension of his own. Although familiar in essence, the chassis of the tracks remains distinctively unique with cuts like "Born Anchors" and "Engage Now" moving away from the calibrated number category, whilst finely blurring the line between explosiveness and self-discipline, which makes them perfect for near peak-time moments of transition in a set. Proper muscular bangers are nevertheless the kernel of it all here, and sure to steer the crowd into ecstasy on automatic pilot. If "Humans Use Concrete" blazes with the wild stomp of Slater's most incisive classics and "Bear Bones" guides its listener into a trippy excursion across hyperspace loops and alien inner territories, it's "Give It Up" that harnesses the storm with its playful mix of sliced-and-diced vocal fragments, rabid toms, skittish hats and freq-shifting synth whines sure to cut a path of destruction into the club. If an extra-terrestrial invasion of planet Earth was on the agenda, no doubt Slater would be appointed soundtrack composer in chief. Deadly as it gets, Straight Shooting holes it in one.

DESAEVER, DIRK Collected 1984-1989 (Long Play) LP
Musique Pour La Danse presents its latest Collected anthology, the label's most ambitious release since an anthology of music by New Beat pioneer Ro Maron (MPD 001CD/LP, 2016). Label managers Olivier Ducret and Ed Isar have focused on another essential Belgian producer: Dirk Desaever, the man behind White House White, A Thunder Orchestra, and Danton's Voice. Some of his productions under these aliases have appeared in compilations such The Sound of Belgium (LMFLF 193CD, 2014), along with edits by Mick Wills and Marcel Dettman. What was initially supposed to be a simple reissue soon turned into a wider project, as Desaever shared heaps of amazing unreleased material. It seemed more interesting to shed light on the dark side of this producer's body of work, rather than to focus on content already reissued elsewhere. After listening to noisy tape rips over and over, Ducret and Isar opted to break this release into three formats, each with different content. They entrusted engineer Lorenzo Targhetta with remastering the music; it's impressive how much he managed to polish the sound without altering the unmistakable grain of music committed to cassette tape. All the music on this LP has never been heard before, except for a single tune released on a rare 7". The track selection and sequence is the result of Ducret & Isar closely listening to the many hours of material. The record can be approached as an imaginary album or even the soundtrack of a lost film or TV show. The idea was to tell a story about Desaever's music by highlighting its themes and variations. While some tunes can be imagined within a New Beat context, it's clear they were not created with clubs in mind. In fact, most of the material here is actually closer to minimal wave, synth wave and dark wave. With a certain gothic melancholia as the common thread running through the record, some tracks can only be described as lo-fi library music with a strong medieval reminiscence, others are closer to the wave aesthetic; a few could even be considered ambient. Desaever's house holds many rooms, each different from the other. After completing a grand tour of the mansion and seeing the bigger picture, it will become clear for listeners how truly unique this producer sounds, even compared with other Belgians from the '80s. Saved from oblivion and irremediable decay, the music on this LP is waiting to be played and listened as well as to inspire.

"Kraut-jazz-rock produced by JJ Whitefield (Poets of Rhythm/Whitefield Brothers). The long-standing band's third album. Featuring Marja Burchard (Embryo). It's been over ten years since Karl Hector and the Malcouns' Sahara Swing saw release on Now-Again in 2008. The album swung with influences from across the African diaspora and set the stage for a cult, but influential following. Hermes designer Christophe Lemaire picked tracks from Karl Hector and The Malcouns as amongst his favorites in the Now-Again catalog, and included them on his Where Are You From anthology. Festival promoters intrigued by the possibility of resurrecting the careers of once forgotten African mavericks -- from Ghana's Ebo Taylor to the progenitors of Zambia's Zamrock scene -- brought Hector and crew across Europe playing festivals for ecstatic fans. Producer JJ Whitefield even founded an Afro-Rock band, Johnny!, with Taylor's son Henry. Unstraight Ahead, their sophomore release from 2014, found the band exploring territories even outside of the expansive scope of Sahara Swing: West African sounds of Ghana and Mali met the East African sounds of Mulatu Astatke's Ethiopian jazz, tied together with the groove heavy experimentalism of The Malcouns' 70s Krautrock godfathers: Can, of course, but also more obscure and equally adventurous groups like Agitation Free, Ibliss and Tomorrow's Gift. 'We look to Middle Eastern funk and psychedelic fusions, and to various ethnic records for sound and phrasing,' Whitefield stated at the time of Unstraight Ahead's release. 'We're trying to combine the global experimentalism of Krautrock with the backbeat of funk.' Non Ex Orbis, the band's third studio album, digs deeper into the Krautrock history embedded deep in the soil of their native Munich - three of the most influential bands of the 1970s experimental German rock scene sprung from there: Amon Düül, Popol Vuh and Embryo. Influenced by these musical heroes, Whitefield shapes a sound that takes the experimental approach of the classic Krautrock era and slides between beat-heavy drone and spacey, prog-rock suites. Marja Burchard, daughter of Embryo mastermind Christian Burchard, fronts the group on keyboard, vibraphone and other-worldly vocals. Al Markovic joins longstanding Malcoun Zdenko Curilija to round out the ensemble. Non Ex Orbis, read by Whitefield and the band as Out Of This World, symbolizes an innocent way of composing and improvising music, free from the influences of our contemporary environment, preserving a childlike way of hearing sounds in their unfiltered purity."

HIPSWAY Smoke & Dreams CD
Oriel Records presents Smoke & Dreams, the first album in 30 years by Glasgow demigods Hipsway. Musically, their influences cover the art-pop of Bowie and Radiohead to the earthy funk of the Meters and much more besides. Recorded in three three-day bursts over the winter and spring of 2018, the album was recorded "old style" with all the musicians crammed together in one room striving for the best unified take of each track and allowing a continuity of sound, where stylistically, the tunes may differ starkly. Thematically the songs are about deception -- be that by "the self" or on a grander "fake news" scale -- hence the album title. Nostalgia plays its part in a let's-learn-from-our-mistakes attitude. In 1986 the group were a young band from Scotland seemingly with the world at their feet. With a hit single ("Honeythief") in both the U.K. and America, 500,000 albums (Gold in UK) sold worldwide and successful tours of Europe and the States, their future path was surely one to glory. Two years later, they disbanded before their second album had even been released; bass player Johnny McElhone formed Texas, while drummer Harry Travers left to pursue his studies. This left singer Grahame Skinner and guitarist Pim Jones with an album they no longer cared about and a record company that no longer cared about them. As Witness they signed afresh to A&M Records but all momentum was lost, as was their A&R man who deserted them -- again -- just as they began promoting the new material. So far, so familiar. These stories are legion in the music business, but every now and again redemption pops its unlikely head above the parapet. Cut to 2016 and to celebrate the deluxe 30th anniversary re-release of their debut album, Skin and Pim decided to play a one-off show at Glasgow's ABC theater. This quickly sold out as did two further gigs; to date the band has now sold over 10,000 concert tickets in Scotland. This caused the "boys" to reason it might be worth making a new record which brings us to Smoke & Dreams, the new release from Hipsway.

Available on vinyl for the first time in 40 years, Outernational Sounds presents a crucial document from the Los Angeles jazz underground. Live At I.U.C.C. sees the Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra at their most together, stretching out on home turf in 1979, with the legendary Horace Tapscott at the helm. Tapscott is one of the unsung giants of jazz; a gifted composer and arranger, a boldly original pianist, and above all a visionary bandleader, Tapscott's recorded footprint is small, but his legacy continues to vibrate through the Los Angeles music underground. From Freestyle Fellowship to Build An Ark, Kamasi Washington, and Dwight Trible, it all traces back to Tapscott. The pianist was an organizer, and instead of chasing a successful recording career, he wanted to build a community band that would act as 'a cultural safe house for the music.' 'I wanted to say, "This is your music. This is black music, and I want to present a panorama of the whole thing right here"' said Tapscott in the late 1990s. As a culturally radical, communal big band with a visionary approach to American Black music, Tapscott's Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra is second only to the other famous Arkestra, that of Sun Ra. Tapscott founded the group in 1961 as the Underground Musicians Association (UGMA). It changed its name to the Pan African Peoples Arkestra in 1971, and through the seventies the players lived, played, and worked together. Community work and political consciousness were at the heart of the project; for two decades they played in streets, parks, and coffee houses. From 1973 to 1981 their main rehearsal and concert space was the Immanuel United Church of Christ (I.U.C.C.); the Arkestra played every second Sunday, developing their sound and hipping new audiences to their vision. Live At I.U.C.C., recorded in early 1979, was the only live recording the band released. In full flow, and at the height of their powers, the group features original UGMA members Linda Hill, David Bryant, and Alan Hines, alongside a new generation including Jesse Sharps, Sabir Mateen, and Adele Sebastian. Showcasing spiritualized classics from the Arkestra's songbook, including the heavy modal groovers "Desert Fairy Princess" and "Macrame." Live At I.U.C.C. is a rare chance to hear one of the most important, foundational bands in the music. With Tapscott at the piano, this is the rarely-captured sound of the mothership in full flight! Limited, vinyl-only triple LP, 180g pressing by Pallas. Fully licensed from Nimbus West founder Tom Albach.

Available on vinyl for the first time in 40 years, Outernational Sounds presents Horace Tapscott's burning, spiritualized 1978 set, The Call. One of the unsung giants of jazz music, the composer, bandleader, arranger, pianist and community activist Tapscott was the undisputed keystone of the grassroots Los Angeles jazz scene. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, his radical community arts and music formations the UGMA (Underground Musicians Association) and his protean big band, the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, were at the epicenter of music, culture, and politics in the Los Angeles area. Hundreds of musicians passed through these groups and played their part. Major figures such as Arthur Blythe, Azar Lawrence, Jimmy Woods, John Carter, Bobby Bradford, Sonny Criss, Ndugu Chancler, and dozens of others all paid dues or just got down with Tapscott, not to mention the core Arkestra regulars who have since become celebrated names; Nate Morgan, Jesse Sharps, Adele Sebastian, Dadisi Komolafe, and Gary Bias, to mention only a few. Tapscott and the Arkestra were down on the ground -- playing fundraisers in parks and streets, organizing teach-ins and workshops for young and old, mixing it with radical theater groups, firebrand poets, political radicals, Black separatists, community groups, and churches. As a result of this grassroots community focus and Tapscott's antipathy to the music industry, the Arkestra didn't record for nearly two decades. That only changed when long-time jazz fan Tom Albach started Nimbus Records. The label was initiated specifically in order to document Tapscott and his circle, and the first three records showcased Horace and the Arkestra. The Call was put together from two studio sessions in April 1978, one at Hollywood Sage and Sound, and one at United Western -- the latter session had the addition of a string section, who can be heard on the moody Cal Massey composition "Nakatini Suite" and Jesse Sharp's swinging modal trip, "Peyote Song No. III," with its swirling soprano solo. In keeping with the communal nature of the Arkestra, the other two compositions, "The Call" and "Quagmire Manor at Five A.M." are also by Arkestra members. But at the center of the music is the builder of the Ark, the visionary whose original call to action started a movement whose legacy continues to this day -- Horace Tapscott. Vinyl-only release, 180 gram pressing by Pallas, fully licensed from Nimbus West founder Tom Albach.

JACQUES X SUPERPOZE Endless Cultural Turnover 12"
The French electronic wizards Jacques and Superpoze made music together. The result is simple: one track together and two original songs, one by Jacques, one by Superpoze. In their own words: "Superpoze and I made music together. We gave birth to an instrumental track. There are no lyrics, but it speaks about time flying; About the feeling of evolving or moving backwards; About repetitive events that don't ever follow the same pattern; About the tragedies that sometimes happen and the fear they would happen again; About discovering enthusiasm; About knowing how to read the future in the past."

CATZ 'N DOGZ Friendship 2x12"
2x12" version. Escaping to a wooden cabin in the Spanish countryside village, Cercedilla, which also shares the name of the opening album track, Greg and Voitek of Catz 'N Dogz came together to create an album that re-wrote their history book. Known for their diverse style and ability to craft varying pace and rhythm, the duo sought out consistency with their Friendship album to make an album in the truest sense; a long player to be listened to as one body of work. Vocalist and guitarist James Yuill on the Spanish inspired "There", fellow polish native Rosalie. on "Mind" and deep vocals of ZENSOFLY and Maxville on the funky "Wave". Traveling into new territories of cross-genre and lingual collaboration, leading Polish rapper, Taco Hemingway lays down lyrics in English on "Yi Fang". Along with longtime friend Kiddy Smile and fellow creative mind Rouge Mary, teaming up on '90s house-inspired love song "One Plus You". Appearances also come from WhoMadeWho on the cool and breezy "Never Go Down", before later delving deeper into the ethereal voice of Jono McCleery in "Would You Believe" and the eerie folk-esque vocals Egl? Sirvydyt? on second-last track "Water". Sharing the same name as their countryside escape, introductory interlude "Cercedilla", eases the listener in with warm notes and raw samples of running water taken from the cottage that became their home. "New Love" celebrates new possibilities and challenges that come throughout life; narrated with rumbling break-beat and euphoric synth lines. Big kicks and funky melodies in "This Feels Real", build anticipation for what is set to follow in the acidic elements of "Questions"; denoting the rollercoaster of emotion one can experience throughout the relationships we make. Hugging the listener with emotional piano chords, "Moments Turn To Hours" encourages the idea of being at peace with oneself, acknowledging the long and hard times and allowing them to pass on by. Looking back to the Berlin days of Catz 'n Dogz, "Last Song For Berlin" summarizes the decade they spent there. Celebrating the people and friendships they made and channeling the soulful side to a city so lauded for its darkness in the techno scene. Picking up with "Hedonic Treadmill" drum and bass elements, layered with emotive keys and uplifting soulful samples, see out the album with a sense of euphoria and hope for the future.

Jacek Sienkiewicz's IMOW, or "In My Own Wave" is a moody record. Although overtly experimental in form, it's quite different to Sienkiewicz's abstract, improvisational albums recorded with Max Loderbauer or AtomTM. Clocking in at only 35 minutes and comprised of eight tracks, IMOW is several years of work distilled into a dense, concise whole. Atmospheric, cinematic, stirring and utterly engaging, this is surely Sienkiewicz's most personal work to date and very possibly his best: his constant struggle to find a perfect balance of flesh and machine, or to translate human emotions to sound by means of a modern studio is manifested here in its purest, most consistent and, surprisingly, very accessible form. From subtle drones, through chants and rhythms echoing in mountainous chambers, to innumerable insect-like sounds and tiny details, it's an encephalogram recorded to tape (or disk). With all its complexity, it's not overwhelming: the meticulously constructed compositions leave both space for the sounds to breathe, and for the listener to fully experience it, without being bored, tired, wishing for less or being hungry for more. And there's beauty in this record, and hope -- in the world of overpowering darkness and constant noise IMOW feels like a peaceful trip into the untouched nature with all its wonders -- offering in equal parts rest, strength and inspiration.

GENIUS OF TIME Peace Bird EP 12"
Swedish duo Genius Of Time's inner strength is the uncanny ability to create tension, sustaining and playing with it, before rewarding the listener (or dancer). "Peace Bird" is a prime example of that technique: a tight build-up and an intricate breakdown lead to heavily strings and foolproof floor finesse. "Smiling Into Eternity" mellows you down easy as well as the club ready "Rymd01", the whole thing is a more than worthy successor to GOT's first EP for Running Back almost five years ago (RB 048EP, 2014).

This LP includes seven soft and watery sounds recorded with analog synthesizers, drum machines, guitars, and vintage Rhodes piano. Under the influences of ambient, new age, jazz-fusion, and deep house sounds, ind_fris came up with the ideas of making something odd but sounding familiar to our daily lives. Meanwhile many inspirations of psychedelic feeling from Osaka underground's night club experiences underlie this album. Six tracks are originally composed by himself. The last track is a cover of the jazz standard "Blue Moon".

VA Harde Smart: Flemish & Dutch Grooves From The 70's 2CD
After taking a deep dive into the dusty crates with Belgian and Dutch music, Harde Smart unearths Flemish & Dutch Grooves From The 70's, a smooth selection of jazzy, funky, and soulful gems from their collected vinyl stash. All the music presented here was recorded and produced during the 1970s, in either Flanders (the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium) or Holland. Besides exquisite grooves and hard-pounding drums, the selected songs also have Dutch lyrics in common, making this a rather unique way to approach and compile lyric-driven Flemish and Dutch music from back in the days. Record collectors all over this language area seem to have neglected a considerable part of their own musical legacy for a few decades, while firmly searching for rare grooves and breaks in the bins with more exotic music; nothing is so certain as the unexpected. Flemish & Dutch Grooves From The 70's is the first "Dutch" compilation album to uncover the genuine, Afro-American funk and soul vibe of the time. It is a sound that - albeit infrequently - influenced the work of some of the popular and less popular singers and musicians in this small part of the world in the '70s, although influences undoubtedly also derived from French chanson and rock music from that era. This 21-track album smashes all musical predictability and takes one on a weird and nostalgic trip, offering a revised set of essential homegrown classics for the local listener, yet also being very exciting to the ears of the non-Dutch speaking audience. Includes tracks by Lamp, Lazerus & Kris, Spectrum, Josine Van Dalsum, Magenta, and more. Also features: Laurentius, Raymond Van Het Groenewoud, André Van Der Veken, Luk Bral, Moeder En Haar Jongens, Lieven Coppieters, Jimmy Frey, Jan De Beer, Daan Broos, Elly & Rikkert, Bizjoe, Daan Broos & Dapokaster, Schralen Tsjip En De Mussenschrik, Herman De Bruycker, Lamp & Lazerus, Liesbeth List, and Della Bosiers. 2CD version includes a mixtape CD on the first disc, and the full-length tracks on the second disc; in slipcase with 16-page booklet.

VA Buzzsaw Joint: Sophisticated Savage - Cut 5 LP
Buzzsaw Joint was born of a club offering Londoners the chance to revel in the sounds of good ol' trashy rock n' roll in all its vintage vinyl forms. Club top-cat, Fritz, then took the primitive buzzsaw sounds online with a series of savage Mixcloud mixes created by record fiends from all over the globe. Now, the high-octane energy of Buzzsaw Joint has manifested into the physical form with a run of compilations on Stag-O-Lee. Get your ears around the wild n' weird sounds of the extraordinary and inimitable Buzzsaw Joint! There's something goin' on down here in these parts. It's put a buzzing in my head, a thumping in my heart. Buzzsaw Joint is back with a fifth cut and this time a Swedish selector wields the blade. DJ Sophisticated Savage first began sharing his wares in a Stockholm Tiki bar, which explains the raft of exotic sounds found on this compilation. But that's not all, add rock, roll, R&B and soul to the list. What's consistent from start to finish is the quality and obscurity of the selections. Open your ears wide and enjoy the ride. 16 tracks recorded between 1957-1962. Features Bill Springer, Stick Evans, Herb Zane, The Starfires, The Kingston Trio, The Don Schraier Rocktet, The Metallics, Blues Blenders, Jimmy Uke and his Islanders, The Demons, Jimmie Raye, Doodie Woo, Melvin Smith, Rhythmaires, Ray Johnson, and The Scholars.

LP version. After a break of two years, Zefur Wolves return with Truth Is In The Stars, beating a path to the promised 2019 follow-up to their acclaimed debut. The three-piece's distinct brand of languid, emotive, alt-rock takes the commanding role with Truth Is In The Stars, released on Strangetown Records. Beautiful and intricate sleeve artwork and lovingly presented by Mark James Works. Studio sessions helmed by producer and former live band member, Super Furry Animal's Cian Ciarán, have driven the band to greater intricacy and an audible sense of playfulness, toying with compositional and recording technique. Having crafted their debut album in California, evocative of their cited inspirations including Spiritualized and Beach House, the upbeat trailblazing first single "Flying High", recorded at Strangetown Studios in Cardiff, suggests new and fertile creative ground has been found to "one up" an already glinting reputation.

LUCY Dyscamupia 12"
Stroboscopic Artefacts boss Luca Mortellaro, aka Lucy, returns with Dyscamupia, a multisensory techno triptych revolving around the sequence of Albert Camus's The Stranger (1942), namely the infamous "killing of the Arab". "Dyscamupia (Forward)" happens before and right until the actual killing -- hence time flowing at a metronomic, heartbeat-like tempo; the second cut "Dyscamupia (Pause)" takes place right after the nameless man's death, when the narrator enters a kind of existential "pause"; the third sequence, "Dyscamupia (Backward)", plumbs the depths of the action itself as played backwards, like an equally hazed-out and dizzying reminiscence of the sad encounter's mechanism.

EFDEMIN Wrong Movements 10"
Stroboscopic Artefacts returns with another in its Totem series, a unique set of releases pressed on transparent 10" vinyl, capturing the essence and effusiveness of multidimensionality of club culture. Stepping up for the third release in the series is Berlin legend Efdemin, bringing a three-track journey that is unequivocally enduring and flexible for journeys on-and-off the dance floor. Efdemin takes on the challenge of Totem's conceptual subjugation and subverts it with his emotionally honest take on a stimulating and subdural sonic experience within three parts. Narratively dense and expertly-paced, the Totem series has another outer-worldly insertion to its catalog. Clear vinyl.

Studio Mule present a reissue of Doctor Umezu Diva's Diva, originally released in 1988. Doctor Umezu Diva is Japanese sax player Kazutoki Umezu's one-off project which he invited two female artists: legendary marimba player Midori Takada and vocalist, pianist, and half of Japanese new wave band Colored Music, Ichiko Hashimoto. This album was one of the best kept, secret jazz albums from Japan; it's really hard-to-find and very limited. Dubby from Ondas Tokyo -- who compiled Midnight In Tokyo Vol. 2 (STUDIOMUL 006CD/LP, 2018) on Studio Mule -- brought this record to Studio Mule's attention. This album is a unique mixture of modern classical sound and avant-garde jazz, which is kind of similar with Strata East or Nimbus.

SPACEMEN 3 Recurring LP
Repressed. "1990's Recurring, the fourth and final studio album by Spacemen 3, is often considered the introduction of two brilliant solo projects (Spectrum and Spiritualized) rather than the work of a functioning band. While Spacemen 3's departing statement surely reveals a deep divide within the S3 camp -- each side of the LP was written by Sonic Boom and Jason Pierce separately and, unlike previous releases, the two do not play on each other's songs -- Recurring maintains a cohesive, dreamy feel with its chief sonic officers backed by fellow travelers Will Carruthers, Mark Refoy and Jon Mattock. Opening saga 'Big City (Everybody I Know Can Be Found Here)' marries ambient haze with narcotized indie rock, while 'I Love You' manages to arrange a beautiful flute alongside a defiantly throbbing bass track. 'Hypnotized,' a reimagined fuzz-pop hymn, would become the group's first entry in the UK Singles Charts. Recurring lays bare the essence of Spacemen 3's persistent sound, rooted in both aural expansion and phenomenal songwriting. Includes download card and new insert with liner notes by Marc Masters."

"Bitty McLean is a very strong singer, who together with Sly & Robbie plus the Taxi Gang (Robbie Lyn, 'Lenky' Marsden, Mikey Chung, 'Sticky' Thompson, 'Dougie' Bryan) has created a collection of tunes that has class stamped all over it - something you might expect from Bitty McLean and these well experienced musicians. Although many see him as a singer who's specialized in delivering beautiful romantic songs, Bitty McLean also excels on a number of noteworthy roots tunes that are part of this new album. One of them is the strong 'War Is Over', a track known from the December 2016 released 10' vinyl EP which furthermore included 'Never Let Me Go' and two versions of 'Rumours' by Bunny Rugs. The great 'Babylon Has Fallen', a popular theme in roots reggae music, shows that he's not only an excellent singer but also a real good songwriter. The same goes for the solid 'Open Eyes (Crisis)', a message tune which most likely musically has to grow on you. That however is not the case with the gorgeous 'Is That Your Reward', a moving cultural tune with an awesome backdrop that gets under your skin. Easily amongst some of the finest is the spiritual 'Every Word & Move', a tune with an inspirational vibe. And then there's also the solid 'My Call', which is just as fine as 'Every Word & Move'. Needless to say that Bitty McLean shines bright on fine love songs like the opener 'Take My Heart (Love Restart)', 'Broke My Heart' and 'Made To Fall In Love'. In particular 'Song Of Songs' is a very delightful offering and one which rises near the top of the album."

2019 repress. Following Scottish artist Claire M Singer's debut album, Solas (TO 101CD, 2016), comes the release of the beautiful and intriguing Fairge, meaning "the ocean" or "the sea" in Scottish Gaelic. Fairge is a single 21-minute piece for organ, cello, and electronics, composed, performed and produced by Claire and is very much a companion work to the title track on her debut album Solas. Commissioned by Amsterdam's oldest building and parish church Oude Kerk, Fairge premiered at the church in February 2017. Claire M Singer's performance on the Ahrend and Bunzema organ, cello, and electronics is truly captivating. The work very much encapsulates her signature style of expansive soundscapes full of intricate textures, rich overtones, and powerful swells, emotionally resonating from beginning to end. Fairge was written specifically for the Ahered and Bunzema organ and explores the precise control of wind through the pipes using mechanical stop action. This creates a lush harmonic backdrop against the harmonics and melody of the haunting cello. Singer on the piece: "Oude Kerk were very generous in letting me have time to explore and really get to know the instrument. The work was developed over many visits sitting in the church until the very wee hours over the winter months, which was incredibly magical and inspiring. When working with mechanical stops and precisely controlling the amount of air that passes through the pipes it requires a lot of practice and exploration to learn each incremental sound the organ can make and what the quirks of the instrument can be. As every organ is unique, the piece will differ on other organs but that's what makes writing and working with the organ so fascinating. The tuning is mean-tone temperament, which I have not worked with previously. With Fairge I really wanted to show how special this relatively small organ is and the beautiful pallet of sound it can produce." Singer's work has been widely commissioned, exhibited, and performed throughout Europe and North America. This includes acoustic and electronic composition, fixed media, multi-media, installations and live electronics. Claire is also Music Director of the organ at Union Chapel and Artistic Director of the Organ Reframed festival. In June 2017, she was a recipient of the inaugural Oram Awards from the PRS Foundation and New BBC Radiophonic Workshop for her innovation in sound and music. Photography and design by Jon Wozencroft. Mastered by Denis Blackham at Skye.

DAVIS, GARY A Taste Of Chocolate: The Very Best Of CD
"Straight outta Camden, NJ it's Chocolate Star. Starting in 1980, Chocolate Star served as the outlet for the music of Gary Davis. Gary started Chocolate Star with his long time Camden compatriot Dennis 'DJ' Jones after a few years spent under the wing of Peter Brown at P&P Records. But Gary's storied involvement in music goes back further than that, having studied composition and arrangement with the late jazz great Manny Albam. Gary's musical education actually started earlier than that as one of the people he learned the most from was his uncle, famed jazz organist Richard 'Groove' Holmes. When you combined the funk Mr. Davis inherited from 'Groove', with the street-sense of Peter Brown with the skillful composition and arrangements learned from Manny Albam, you've got Chocolate Star. Playing with a band composed of (very talented) people from his Camden neighborhood Davis released cut after cut of solid funk filled dance music. They're all compiled here, from the Joe Sample-inspired 'Gee Dee', to one of first commercial releases to lay the beat down with a drum machine in "The Pop". Of course prominently featured is the legendary mover 'Gotta Get Your Love.' A Taste Of Chocolate: The Very Best of Gary Davis has been assembled with Mr. Davis and whenever possible using Gary's original masters. These cuts bridge the disco era, into hip hop and the earliest forms of house. Talented, versatile, and still able to get you out of your chair and shaking your behind...this is Chocolate Star. This is the very best of Gary Davis."

To narrate in one album the only two stories worth being narrated -- the one about a man living his home, and the one about a man coming back to his home -- H-Burns (aka Renaud Brustlein) first matured his project isolated in a home-studio owned by French underground collective La Souterraine before bringing it to the studio with a team of musicians and engineers that he meticulously picked as usual: Earl Harvin from Tindersticks on the drums, Kate Stables from This Is The Kit as a vocal guest, Noah Georgeson (The Strokes, Andy Shauf, etc.) for the mixing, etc. Understandably titled Midlife, this new album, recorded on analog tapes, tells the story of a man who looks back over the journey of his life, remembering his dreams of glory, the lost love stories, what he left behind from the others and from himself. "Sister" features Kate Stables.

ANDO, UMEKO Battaki (Joe Claussell Remix) LP
Umeko Ando's Battaki (Joe Claussell Remix) is the second release from Japanese label Volkuta. For this release, three songs are selected from the album Infuke, originally released in 2001. Ando is known as the master of Upopo (song) and Mukkuri (mouth harp) and also known as one of the successors of the Ainu tribal culture of Hokkaido's Obihiro district. Ando has been sending the Ainu music all over the world with her unafraid style, adopting the music for new generations but at the same time respecting the original which has been followed since ancient times. "Battaki" is fusion of the Ainu's Upopo and folky sound of the tonkori (the stringed instrument of the Ainu) & percussion by Oki from Oki Dub Ainu Band. The next two tracks are "Mukkuri", representing the Ainu's primitive style itself. On side B, Joe Claussell has remixed a 14-minute version of "Battaki" giving a jazz essence to Ando's original. The Ainu people live in Hokkaido in harmony with nature, as aboriginal people like Native Americans or Eskimos. It is not easy to imagine their original, highly-developed culture and tradition and their foreign trade when one is more familiar with the Ainu's simple, freely-living way of live (which is actually made up for tourism). The truth is further from one's expectations; one must not forget the persecuted history that the westernizing Japanese robbed the Ainu of their land unfairly, forced upon them their own values. Vokulta is happy to release into the world the music of Ms. Umeko Ando and producer Mr. Oki. Releasing the sound on vinyl is also to deliver the background of the music through the media of a jacket. It is different from what is released with a simple two-hole sleeve. The remixer Joe Claussell has not just remixed the sound, he has recreated the view of this music in his world. It has been four years since the first release, but Volkuta still has the same touch since we had deciding to release this music, having faith that this music will be played for many years in the whole world.

2019 repress; New "regular edition" on 140 gram vinyl. We Release Jazz (WRWTFWW Records' new sister-label) presents its first release, the official reissue of Ryo Fukui's highly sought-after masterpiece Scenery, originally released in 1976. Unquestionably one of the most important Japanese jazz albums ever recorded, Scenery reveals Ryo Fukui as a miraculously brilliant self-taught pianist fusing modal, bop, and cool jazz influences for a very personal, dexterous, and game-changing take on classic standards made famous by Bing Crosby and John Coltrane among others. From "It Could Happen To You" and its serene and calm intro which magically flows into a jubilant and upbeat piece, to the out-of-this-world piano solo of "Early Summer", or the incredible teamwork of "Autumn Leaves" where Fukui leads Satoshi Denpo (bass) and Yoshinori Fukui (drums) into groove heaven, every single note on the album oozes precision, confidence, and flair and every single section slides seamlessly into one another, creating a supreme and elegant blend of jazz. Often compared to McCoy Tyner or Bill Evans, Ryo Fukui was a genius in his own right, a true master of his craft whose perfectionism gave birth to some of the greatest music ever recorded. Scenery is his magnum opus and an absolute must-have. The Hokkaido wizard-pianist followed Scenery with the soulful gem Mellow Dream (WRJ 002CD/LP/LTD-LP) in 1977. He then focused on improving his live skills, often performing at Sapporo's Slowboat Jazz Club (which he co-founded with his wife Yasuko Fukui) and releasing two live albums. Ryo Fukui sadly passed away in March 2016, leaving behind a legacy of works that is sure to captivate jazz lovers for generations to come. Sourced from the original masters. LP version is mastered at half speed; 140 gram vinyl with sticker.
