VACANT LOTS, THE Exit EP 12"
Exit EP is the second release by The Vacant Lots on Anton Newcombe's label A Recordings. Recorded in Berlin in 2017 over three days in between tours with The Dandy Warhols and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Anton Newcombe played bass, synths, guitars, and backing vocals on previous single "Bells", as well as operated the desk. Jared Artaud of the band goes into the recording process: "About a week or so before we left for tour I just invited Anton and his wife out to dinner, since we were gonna have a few days off in Berlin. He said 'f*ck that? Let's make a record? come ready with your ideas.' And that was how we made Berlin EP. I like working with Anton in the studio because through this collaboration we're able to distill ideas on the spot and turn fragments into songs. Anton pushes you further to get the best results and that really drives the process of making records. With Anton you don't get more than one or two takes to record something. You're executing your ideas with speed and intensity then moving on to the next idea. There is no time to overthink when you're constantly creating." 180 gram, white vinyl. The Vacant Lots are an American psych-electronic duo comprised of Jared Artaud and Brian MacFadyen. The key element of The Vacant Lots' minimalist, primitive rock and roll songs is their boundless energy, which tears up the psych template with a genuine punk spirit. The notion of duality is also a recurring theme in the band's minimal means maximum effect aesthetic, whether in their lyrics or fiercely monochromatic artwork. The group has collaborated with underground music legends including; Sonic Boom, who mixed their debut album Departure (2014), Alan Vega of Suicide (whose vocals are featured on the band's second album Endless Night (2017) and who they've done a split 10" with), and Anton Newcombe who has recorded and produced two EPs at his Cobra Studio in Berlin with the band.

LEROSA Bucket Of Eggs 2LP
Acid Test on the record: "To know Lerosa is to have a huge amount of respect for him. The Dublin-based, Italian producer isn't concerned with the limelight. Rather, his studio philosophy resembles the Japanese concept of 'kaizen' a workman-like, incremental improvement. Leopoldo Rosa's debut for Acid Test is the producer's first album in eight years, but since then he's put out in the neighborhood of 15 EPs for the likes of Idle Hands, Ferox, and Saft, honing in on his own lush sound, which weaves effortlessly between deep house, acid and electro. He applies all these patient lessons on Bucket Of Eggs, the ten masterful tracks fit perfectly within the label's concept. Yet Rosa, like the label's stable of 303 auteurs (Tin Man, Recondite, John Frusciante, Pepe Bradock) opens up bold new vistas for the subgenre. On 'Conjurors', he spends half the track building up atmosphere so thick and dubby you could cut it with a knife, before introducing an acid line and jack track heralding back to the acid's maddening, revolutionary roots. About halfway through the set, Lerosa is done setting the stage, and thusly delivers a string of freakishly good late night tracks. For Lerosa, the hips and the head work in concert -- 'One Is Too Short''s no-nonsense rhythm section perfectly balanced by the track's dreamy synth and zero-gravity piano breaks. On 'Self Inflicted', he joins a rarified class, synthesizing electro funkiness, widescreen ambience, and acid counterpoint. On initial contact, Lerosa's Bucket Of Eggs feels astonishing, an expertly-paced, near-perfect LP. But for those who have been following the low-key producer, it feels like a natural culmination."

BREAKWATER Release The Beast 7"
Breakwater's earth-shattering "Release The Beast" is unquestionably the standout song from their 1980 funk masterpiece LP Splashdown. "Release The Beast" is a showcase for Breakwater's phenomenal power-funk capabilities. The energy is astounding. It also came out as a now-hen's-teeth-rare 7" in the same year; It's one of the best album cover shoots of all time. For the B side, Be With Records backed Breakwater's biggest track with their favorite: the quietly majestic gem "Let Love In", another winner from the same LP. Remastered for this vinyl reissue. HAINO/JIM O'ROURKE/OREN AMBARCHI, KEIJI In the past only geniuses were capable of staging the perfect crime (also known as a revolution) Today anybody can accomplish their aims... 2LP
Double LP version. Full title: In the past only geniuses were capable of staging the perfect crime (also known as a revolution) Today anybody can accomplish their aims with the push of the button. For its 50th release, Black Truffle presents the ninth album from one of the label's core ensembles, the power trio of Keiji Haino, Jim O'Rourke, and Oren Ambarchi. Drawn from a November 2015 performance at Tokyo's now-defunct SuperDeluxe, the record's opening piece drops us immediately into the maelstrom, abruptly cutting into an extended episode of Ambarchi's pummeling drums, O'Rourke's fuzzed-out six-string bass, and Haino's roaring guitar and electronics. Eventually settling into a hypnotic bass and drum groove over which Haino unleashes some almost Ray Russell-eque skittering atonal screech, these opening 13 minutes act as a potent reminder of the trio's power. Alongside showcasing the steady development of a unique language for the guitar-bass-drums power trio, the group's succession of releases over the last decade has demonstrated a constant experimentation with new instruments, which continues here with O'Rourke use of Hammond organ (played at the same time as his roaming, sometimes knotty basslines). On the album's second piece, the organ plays a key role, furnishing a harmonically rich shimmer over O'Rourke's angular six-string bass chords, Haino's distant, chirping electronics and Ambarchi's crisp cymbal work; arriving somewhere halfway between Albert Marcoeur and Terje Rypdal, this piece is undoubtedly a highlight in the trio's catalog so far. The second and third sides are slow-burning, multi-part epics that range from spacious reflection to furious tumult. Where the trio's previous double-LP set -- This Dazzling, Genuine "Difference" Now Where Shall It Go? (BT 030LP, 2017) -- was primarily instrumental in focus, here you find Haino's voice taking the spotlight on the expansive third side, intoning, wailing. and exhorting in Japanese and English over a backdrop that moves from hushed bass and organ atmospherics to rolling toms and cymbal crashes before arriving at an ecstatic finale of searing guitar, tumbling drums and reverb-saturated bass. The fourth side returns to the hypnotic grooves of the opening piece, fixing on a relentless riff and riding it into oblivion under Haino's roaming psychedelic soloing and jagged chordal slashes. Cover image by Traianos Pakioufakis; Live action pics by Ujin Matsuo. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering. LP design by Lasse Marhaug; gatefold sleeve.

CHRISTENSEN, STEFAN The Upcoming Flame LP
Stefan Christensen swamps delicate threads of melody in a muted squall of distortion. Waves of agitated noise, tamped down but still fractious, roll over the structures of his songs, so that it's hard to tell whether the song or the dissonant scree of sound is the main thing. A current member of Headroom and frequent collaborator with members of Mountain Movers, Alexander, and Nagual, Christensen layers haunted sung imagery over slow looped constructions of guitar and percussion. Here on The Upcoming Flame, the melodic fire flickers amid smoke, haze, and hum. The pretty folk strumming of "Arrows" provides a sharp contrast to the blistering roar of "Unkempt Power (This City's Hold)", whose wild guitar distortion edges close to Dinosaur Jr. territory. The stark, minimal power of "G. Roberts", where a single electric guitar line carves through echo-shrouded hiss and hum is quite unlike the dystopian hypnotics of "Like Factories" a wavery chant weaving through mechanical assembly-line stomp.

MUERAN HUMANOS Hospital Lullabies CD
"Since their last album Miseress at the end of 2015, Mueran Humanos have continued to expand their audience playing major festivals like Primavera Sound, sharing the stage with the likes of Swans, The Fall and Royal Trux, playing legendary venues like the Berghain main room, touring the world and completing a full European tour supporting The Horrors, hand-picked by the band themselves. They have also recently placed synchs on Netflix show Diablero and upcoming HBO paranormal comedy, Los Espookys (Fred Armisen) which is HBO's first entirely Spanish language series. For the uninitiated, Mueran Humanos, (Tomas Notcheff, Carmen Burguess), can be a tough one to explain. Their influences could be listed and they could be called 'a psychedelic-krautrock garage punk-electronics duo who manage to capture the rich cultural history and excitement of their adopted home of Berlin and infuse it with a sophisticated South American chic imported from their native Buenos Ares'. At their core, these are simple and catchy songs with a solid electronics foundation solidified by driving bass lines and textural keyboard parts. Vocals are shared by both members, and they create an important dichotomy between the masculine and feminine energies that shape the band. Spanish speakers are in luck, because the lyrics are surrealist poetry of the highest order. Thankfully for the everyone else, they occupy that special place reserved for bands like Einstürzende Neubauten, (Jochen Arbeit of EN actually appeared on the bands last album), or Os Mutantes, where they transcend language barriers and are capable of telling a story through the sheer power of the human voice. Hospital Lullabies is a companion piece to a movie of the same name directed by Carmen Burguess, and without question this is their most refined and cohesive statement so far. While there is a darkness to some of it (fleshed out by imagery of nightmares, childhood terrors, and the trauma of mental institutions), it is balanced by feelings of romance and optimism and an overwhelming sense of childlike wonder."

VA Cocoon Compilation S CD
Cocoon Recordings goes into overdrive with the next installment of their legendary compilation series. Love Over Entropy gets the ball rolling with "As If", offering up smooth, Mediterranean vibes designed to stimulate heart-felt communication. Stimming's "The Gift That Never Stops To Give" continues in a low-slung, tribal vein peppered with jazzed-out, tubular percussion as the psychedelics gently take hold. John Talabot and Axel Boman, aka Talaboman, not only win the most bombastic track name of the year competition, but do a good job living up to it on "Big Room Anthemic Groovy Pounding Trance Dub Bomb. Superb!" The extended intro delivers a heightened sense of anticipation, as gentle bleeps, angular trance riffs and weird frequency oscillations toast the synapses. Emanuele Satie's "Planet XXX" is a perfectly balanced tech house groover, climaxing with an ecstatic breakdown. "End Days" from Edward then ups the ante with a metallic, new beat vibe that swamps you in wild analog noise before the deep brooding pads take over. Analog squiggles dominate the opening exchanges on Florian Hollerith's "KURZVOR12" as the soundsystem starts pounding relentlessly into the early hours. A strong head is certainly required under pressure from the hypnotic, rasping synth lines. Raxon gets things rolling on "The Turbulent" with electric hi-hats snaking through a dense mesh of banging snares that accompany a morphing acid line. "Jaded" then takes you into the realms of full-on industrial techno as Mark Broom transports you back to the genre's mid-90s heyday. Egbert ramps up the distortion on "Tering" with a flapping sub bass, played out across heavenly vox pads and acid washes. As you enter the final straight, "Keep Changing Basslines" from Italian maestro Dino Lenny journeys deeper stil006C, before it unfurls to reveal a myriad of arpeggiating synth and bass lines as the vocal sample of the title suggests. Deep, thoughtful and intelligent, there's also a hint of retro rave culture thrown in for good measure. Neil Landstrumm then takes us to Casio heaven on "Flesh Is A Prison", utilizing crisp sound that carries a laser-guided sting in the tail before Red Axes close things out with "Hevk". A long, spacey intro and more razor-edged riffs that morph and stutter perfectly encapsulate everything that has gone before.

Containing all new studio recordings, Triumvirate brings Chris Carter, Cosey Fanni Tutti, and Nik Void's collaborative partnership as Carter Tutti Void to a conclusion. The trio first came together as a collective for a live performance, invited by Mute for the Short Circuit Festival in 2011 and released their acclaimed debut, the live album Transverse the following year. For some time Carter, Tutti, and Void have been awaiting an opportunity when all three artists were able to gather at Carter and Tutti's Studio47 in Norfolk, where the album was recorded, produced, and mastered. Triumvirate was approached with the improvisational spirit of previous Carter Tutti Void albums. The rhythms, created by Chris Carter, formed the foundation and starting point from which the process began of melding the live instrumentation of Cosey Fanni Tutti and Nik Void's searing guitars, vocals, effects and the arsenal of sounds each had amassed from a variety of sources, some sounds manipulated to extremes, all fed into the mix. GONZO Ruido(s) LP
Sometimes one knows it's coming, sometimes it's unexpected, but the time to hang up one's boots will always come. It's better when one has total control over the moment, even better if things end on a high (or on a low). After seven years of sonic interferences, calibrating the soundscape of field recordings and helping to recreate the old sounds of today, Gonzo is retiring from music. It's a goodbye, and a well-crafted one at that. But Ruído(s) doesn't sound like an intentional farewell. It won't be heard on any of the thirteen tracks that scavenge for a solution in the space between ambient music and field recordings. It won't be felt in the intense connection between human and natural sounds; how sometimes everything oscillates in opposite states of mind. One won't even read it in the intense-yet-subtle humor present in some of the pieces. This is all because it's not an intentional goodbye. What is it then? It's a celebration of random sound. How can one experience something scholastic and simultaneously deeply hilarious? Just think about the amazing triad formed by "A Fuga Dos Grilos." "Degredado(s)," and "Cantiga Parva". First, one is blessed with six minutes that build up on the idea that sound can be an intense religious experience, echoes going back and forth to create a fantastic Boiler Room feeling (one populated with raving Gonzos doing dabs in front of the camera) that eventually ends with a cinematic touch -- someone saying the title of the song out loud. One second after we are into the Flying Lizards world, with two songs that shake any pretentious seriousness of the previous track. Is it serious or not? It is. But it doesn't have to be. On Ruído(s) Gonzo recounts pop/electronic history through field recordings and weird-soft beats. More than compiling his seven-year history, Gonzo is more worried about understanding where he's leaving his ideas, Caretaker-style. As the album progresses and the need to revisit it grows, it becomes clearer that Ruído(s) is more than an artist self-indulging in his work -- in a very good manner. It's also a condensed catalog of Portuguese music and its sounds, a circular trip down the memory lane of a forgotten country and its landscape. Ruído(s) is a goodbye to a country and its traditions. It does it without sulking but with the most respectful loud laugh -- the Gonzo way.

MUNK & NICKLAS SORENSEN, JONAS Always Already Here CD
Jonas Munk and Nicklas Sørensen team up for a genre-defying record that explores American minimalism, psychedelia, and electronic music -- both vintage and contemporary. On a foundation of interlocking guitar and synthesizer patterns, the duo constructs lengthy pieces that are experimental yet welcoming in nature, precisely executed yet with room for soaring improvisation. Always Already Here pays homage to the masters of classical minimalism (Steve Reich, Terry Riley) and the pioneers of electronic music and kosmische (Brian Eno, Manuel Göttsching), still it doesn't sound derivative or retrospective. The type of hypnotic bliss Munk and Sørensen strive for is distinctly timeless. Always Already Here came to life during a handful of intense sessions in Munk's studio in Odense, Denmark. However, from a larger perspective the record seems to be a culmination of several years of collaborating. From 2010-2014, Munk recorded and produced three full-length albums for Sørensen's band Papir, and in the period 2015-2017 the two collaborated on Sørensen's two solo efforts Solo and "Solo 2". During the same period they have occasionally performed live as a duo, playing semi-improvised shows based around guitars and synthesizers. These live shows have assuredly influenced their collaborative work with an explorative, animated quality ? which is especially apparent on the album's free flowing, zen-orientated B-side. Always Already Here ties together several musical threads: academic pattern-music, psychedelia, avant-garde sound exploration as well as a highly melodic sensibility. It's a multi-layered, colorful album that demands full sonic immersion.

ASTRAL TV Travelling The Circuits LP
Rasmus Rasmussen (Aerosol, Causa Sui) and Keith Canisius present another delightful set of Astral TV tracks with Travelling The Circuits. Since their debut album, Chrystal Shores from 2017 (EPR 042LP), the Copenhagen-based duo have refined and perfected their approach to making semi-improvised synthesizer music. Musically it doesn't get much more pure than this. From their vast assemblage of synthesizers -- that is, vintage, modern, digital, analog, and modular synthesizers -- the two producers are squeezing the finest sonic essence, for your neural pleasure. Forget about song structures and leads -- it's not that kind of album. Listening to Travelling The Circuits is like floating on an electronic river through a slowly changing scenery. There's really no story here, and it's not about the destination. It's about colors -- lots of colors. And the tactile beauty of sounds and patterns, filters slowly opening and closing, letting your senses tickle by a unique 80hz oscillation that only a wood paneled analog synth from the early 1980s can produce. Travelling The Circuits is a true auditory delight.

OTIS, SHUGGIE Inspiration Information LP
2019 repress. 180 gram vinyl exact repro reissue of Shuggie's sublime 1974 album, featuring the original cover art. "Information belongs to the mind. It can be gathered, coded, processed and decoded, and used for any number of purposes. Inspiration comes from the soul. It is an elusive spark, one that cannot be bought or sold, nor artificially triggered. It is a gift. That the two can be combined into something quietly exciting is proven by the music on this, Shuggie Otis's third solo album. There is some old (several of the basic tracks were recorded over the last two years), and some new (for the first time, Shuggie has assumed complete artistic control, handling almost all of the production and arrangements). Most present, however, is the sense and beginning of a totally new struggle for Shuggie, the thirteen-year-old who made his recording debut with the Johnny Otis show, and later came to national attention through the Al Kooper sessions, is a man and an artist now. He is creating in the seventies, a time whose conflicts are being shaped by information -- and the lack of it. One gets the feeling that even as the information changes, so will the inspiration." -- Winston Cenac (Scoops), from the back cover.

VAN ZANDT, TOWNES Townes Van Zandt LP
"'Townes Van Zandt's third recording is an early guitar-and-voice singer-songwriter classic laden with memorable originals. Start with 'For the Sake of the Song,' an oft-recorded classic here enlivened by tasteful percussion. Move on to a couple of Van Zandt's gritty, death's door laments -- 'Waiting Around to Die' (where the ex-con protagonist finds a friend in codeine) and a miner's sad tale, 'Lungs.' 'Colorado Girl' is another in a career-long series of paeans to Colorado, where Van Zandt went to college. 'I'll Be Here in the Morning' is a tender love song, while the Dylanesque 'Fare Thee Well, Miss Carousel' is almost playful. Like most Van Zandt albums, this one has the obligatory buried-but-beautiful small masterpiece, in this case the undeniably gorgeous '(Quicksilver Daydreams of) Maria.' The closer is another oft-covered piece of scrimshawed tunesmithery, 'None but the Rain.' This 1969 effort is the first of several essential Van Zandt albums.' --Robert Baird"

X Los Angeles LP
"'Musically, Los Angeles is almost infallible. 'Your Phone's Off the Hook, But You're Not' kicks off with relentless immediacy as if you've jumped into a speeding car on a midnight tour. Doe and Cervenka trade lead vocals and occasionally Cervenka veers stunningly off course in vivid and blistering wails, a Siouxsie Sioux in Southern California. On top of Bonebrake's motoring drums, the songs are dark and doom-laden, fiery and mordant. X sings about drugs and violence and cruising and ennui, conjuring a mood that prefigures Hüsker Dü's 'Diane' and Sonic Youth's Bad Moon Rising. They stick it to the upper class with 'Sex and Dying in High Society' and they finish with one of the best punk love songs of all time, 'The World's a Mess, It's in My Kiss.' 'Go to hell, see if you like it/Then come home with me' -- the musical equivalent of cigarette ashes and red lipstick -- the end to a wild ride through Los Angeles' underworld.' --Rebecca Bengal, Pitchfork"

X Wild Gift LP
"'For X's second release, 1981's Wild Gift, the quartet followed the same path they had taken a year earlier on their debut, Los Angeles, creating another batch of timeless compositions that merged the energy of punk rock with other musical styles. Former Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek reprised his role as producer on what would turn out to be X's last independent release before signing to Elektra. Included are such eventual punk standards as 'We're Desperate,' the melodic hookfest 'White Girl' (sampled years later by the Red Hot Chili Peppers in their song 'Good Time Boys'), and 'Beyond and Back.' Other highlights include the '50s-prom feel of 'Adult Books,' the punk-pop composition 'In This House That I Call Home,' and the rapid 'Back 2 the Base.' While it may be a shade less exceptional than its predecessor, Wild Gift is nonetheless a classic effort.' --Greg Prato, All Music"

WEEPING BONG BAND II LP
"Following up on their eponymous debut LP, this Western Mass quintet has released a live album that expands their musical palette, while retaining the essential magic of their sound. Bill Meyer described Weeping Bong Band's music as a collision between Popol Vuh's Florian Fricke and Hash Jar Tempo (itself a collab between Bardo Pond and Roy Montgomery), and the same mix of drifty Germanic midnights and Bay Area Ballroom sizzle is present on Weeping Bong's sophomore slab. Recorded at the 1794 Meeting House in New Salem, MA -- the site of many finely smoked concert events -- all five key members are on hand (which is not always the case). Beverley Ketch, PG Six, Anthony Pasquarosa, Clark Griffin, and Wednesday Knudsen are all present and up to their necks in the sonic swirl. A big new factor here is the piano, played in a style that makes me think of Grace Slick's keyboard work on Blows Against the Empire (1970). This is appropriate given that Weeping Bong Band is a similar sort of multi-band-sourced collaboration as that classic 1970 Paul Kantner side. And since the same folks played on both Kantner's Empire and Crosby's If I Could Only Remember My Name (1971), is it a coincidence that one track on this album is called 'Remembering My Name'? You be the judge. Amidst the clouds of quiet presence, strings are plucked or bent, pulses emerge from the darkness, and your brain flows like butter. Just turn out the lights and do it. You will be so happy you did." --Byron Coley, 2019 Edition of 500.

TAXIDERMISTS Tax LP
"Tax is the second vinyl from Taxidermists; the great Western Mass pop/punk duo comprised of guitarist/vocalist Cooper Handy and drummer Salvadore McNamara. Their first album, Honesty Box (2015) was a super interesting blend of screwed-up Sonic Youth/Pavement textures and straight-up power-pop. It had weirdly addictive properties and ended up getting a good number of spins. So, when a new album was ready, Ted Lee jumped on it like a badger attacking a kangaroo rat. And we're glad he did. Tax leans a little bit more in the pop direction than its predecessor, but it still has plenty of odd touches that keep it from being anything like a readymade confection. Some of this is surely due to the difficulty of going soft when you have an electric band with a duo line-up. Most better-known groups choosing such an arrangement are in the experimental or noise "bag," but there have also been examples of bands doing more overt "rock" action in this guise, ranging from the obscure (Smashchords) to the massive (White Stripes). But what the Taxidermists are doing is rather different; while they still show a certain raggedy edge, the bulk of the material on Tax seems like a reimagining of music by heavy British bands of the '60s. Elements of the Kinks, the Who, and the Shadows all pops up in unexpected ways, collaged and submerged in the Taxidermists' own medicated goo. In short, it sounds like a record Wes Anderson might have commissioned if he decided to do a soundtrack from scratch. What could be better for a summer spin? Not much!" --Byron Coley, 2019 Edition of 250, 45 RPM.

A-SUN AMISSA For Burdened and Bright Light LP
LP version. White color vinyl; edition of 300. For Burdened and Bright Light is the fifth full-length album from A-Sun Amissa. This new work builds on the foundations of previous record Ceremony In The Stillness (GZH 085CD/LP, 2018), incorporating some of the heavier, distorted, guitar-oriented themes but this time fuses them with broken, crumbling electronic beats and primal drone movements. The result is two long-form pieces of work that take time to unfold and multiple listens to truly digest what is on offer. The music of A-Sun Amissa has evolved some-what naturally over the years, drawing from elements of dark-ambient, post-rock, and minimal doom, but always with a leading experimental edge and a huge amount of room to push the boundaries back as far as possible. For Burdened and Bright Light feels like the next logical chapter in the journey. Essentially, A-Sun Amissa is the project of Richard Knox (Gizeh Records founder, The Eternal Return Arkestra curator, member of The Rustle of the Stars, Shield Patterns, and Glissando) who has utilized a vast array of other musicians throughout the group's previous records. This time around though it's almost exclusively the work of Knox who continues to embed his typical DIY approach in writing, recording, and mixing the entire album, alongside providing the artwork. On a sonic level For Burdened and Bright Light is the furthest Knox has gone in terms of production, depth, and working with a more diverse palette of sounds. A-Sun Amissa's distinct atmosphere remains intact however and the result is a more immersive, ambitious, adventurous record of conflicting emotions as the theme of the work tackles the contradictions of being human and explores the duality of light and dark, hope and despair. The two compositions found here are underpinned by vast ambient passages that are drenched in distortion and reverb, slowly unfurling before more industrial, kinetic sounds are introduced and heaving guitars come to the fore. The clarinet work of Claire Knox features prominently and ranges from huge, droning, orchestral overtones in the opening section of "Breath by Breath" to a wild, free-jazz explosion in the middle of "Seagraves". The addition of David Armes's lap-steel for the first time brings a discordant and haunting element to the sound and builds on the recent live work this trio have done together.

MORGAN'S POWERTRANE WITH DENIZ TEK & RON ASHETON, SCOTT Ann Arbour Revival Meeting CD
"Living up to its title, Ann Arbor Revival Meeting is a cross-generational project from 2002 that brings to life Ann Arbor and Detroit's rock legacy through a combination of some of its key protagonists. Scott Morgan, who leads the band at the core of the record, Powertrane, goes back to mid '60s days, to The Rationals, who ruled the local teen scene alongside the likes of Bob Seger and The Last Heard. In the '70s, he fronted the seminal Sonic's Rendezvous Band, alongside Fred 'Sonic' Smith of the MC5 and Scott Asheton of The Stooges. Deniz Tek, guest for the entire show, is an Ann Arbor native who spent most of the '70s in Sydney and led the mighty Radio Birdman. Ron Asheton, the special guest who appears playing guitar on the handful of Stooges tunes here is the man who played on them originally, the great and sadly now late guitar innovator who was at the core of The Stooges' huge influence across of the '70s and beyond. Representing the younger generation are Powertrane's rhythm section Andrew 'Box' Taylor on bass, who instigated the band's shows with Tek and Asheton, and Andy Frost, a great drummer who sadly passed away in 2010, had been mentored by Scott Asheton. Additionally, local identities Robert Gillespie and Hiawatha Bailey are present. Robert Gillespie is Powertrane's regular lead guitarist, a long time sideman for original R&B belter Mitch Rider and a former member of Rob Tyner's new MC5 in the late '70s. Hiawatha, who sings a couple of the Stooges covers, was a Stooges roadie back in the day and later front man of local punk-rockers The Cult Heroes in the late '70s and '80s. Originally released on CD only by Real O-Mind Records in 2002, this is one of the great live albums."

Eleven Pollard compositions followed, along with four songs which Pollard wrote and recorded melodies over Gillard-penned instrumentals, starting an unusual songwriting process that Pollard pursued for several years with various long-distance collaborators. SCHWARZWALDER & IANNIS RITTER, CHRISTOPHER Out the Window LP
Take your phone, your tablet, and your TV and throw them out the window! That's the spirit and the idea uniting the eight tracks of the album Out the Window by Christopher Schwarzwälder & Iannis Ritter. Listening to this otherworldly piece of downtempo electronica will make you feel relieved and excited, as if you had actually removed your electronic shackles for a little while. This album is light and heavy at the same time, it's in your room and outside, it is loud and quiet like an extroverted introvert. The nature of this album is organic and analog and simply weird -- it's a juxtaposition of well-known, homey sounds and the strange. The intro "Snow Broom" feels like waking up on holiday, where you hear the familiar sounds of your loved ones in the kitchen, however they are in a new kitchen, so it feels alluringly different. The title track "Out the Window" seems to conjure the listener and you will find yourself spacing out as if you were smoking really good sativa for the first time. "Electron", featuring Mo, is another highlight, with its different characters it resembles an audio book of The Neverending Story. The vocals in "Make Things Smaller" and "Safe Place" feel hip-hop influenced and ancient, like someone rapping in-front of an open fire. Out the Window is an album for late summer, autumn, winter time, or any time that you like to look out the window and inside your own mind. Includes download code.

SKULL PRACTITIONERS Death Buy EP 12"
"Massive slab of debut vinyl by a New York trio whose guitarist, Jason Victor, knows more than a little about the potential of psych-gush overload. In his position as the current guitarist of the Dream Syndicate, one might suppose that, by stepping into shoes formerly occupied by Karl Precoda, Mr. Victor was granted some sort of special legacy connection to the ur-root of string-excess in the post-punk era. But Jason seems to have been blowing the tops of people's heads off with pure raunch vomona since before he ever met Steve Wynn. The Skull Practitioners have been active since 2013, garnering a reputation for bodacious live skronk, although the only graspable evidence of their existence has been a 2014 cassette, which was not widely distributed. Now, with the mighty In The Red empire behind them, only a sucker would think they won't go far. Victor's explosive guitar shards are the most obvious element of the trio's sound, but bassist Kenneth Levine can conjure up a throb as thick as Al Feedtime's, and Alex Baker's drumming mixes propulsion and motorik circularity with reckless grace. There are only vocals on half the tracks here -- Gun Club-seasoned blow-outs called 'The Beacon' and 'Grey No More' -- but I didn't miss them on their other two tunes. The richness of the band's psychedelic inventions obviates the need for overt human lingo. The music here communicates on a molecular level. Remember when Tim Leary said Peter Walker was 'playing celestial strings on the DNA of musical being'? It's the same here. I've never heard much of Jason's studio work (often with pop engines like the Silos or Matthew Sweet), but if he plays this great, I might have to check them out. In the meantime, these four songs will be enough. For me. For you. Even for the late Tim 'Fuckin' Leary. C'est la." --Byron Coley

PETRA Aunis LP
Pétra is a new collaborative music project from Brian Allen Simon (aka Anenon) and Chantal Chadwick. The duo's debut album, Aunis, incorporates electronic and acoustic instrumentation which draws the listener into dream-like soundscapes and blends ambient sounds, modern composition, and abstract vibrations. Primarily written, performed, produced, and recorded on the volcanic island of Nisyros, Greece in late 2018, Pétra means "stone, rock", and the name of the project was inspired by a chance encounter with the photography of Daniel Boudinet as well as the geological formations of Nisyros. With additional work on the album completed in Loire, France and Mexico City, Mexico, the music is a site-specific reaction to all locales and was arranged in a free-form variety of methods with an improvisational energy being the driving force. Compositions such as the reverberating "Aunis" rely on ethereal sounds and deep repetition, while the fluid "Landes" is a weightless moment of sonic beauty and emotional depth. Elsewhere, the reactionary "Fuzz" and the meditative, hazy sound explorations of "Obsidian" are hauntingly beautiful, while "Tavel" is reminiscent of the melodic repetition of minimalist pioneers like Steve Reich.Los Angeles native Brian Allen Simon, aka Anenon, is a multi-instrumentalist and producer who has received critical acclaim for his work from the likes of Pitchfork, The Wire, The Guardian, and more. Since his 2012 debut Inner Hue, Simon has continually and consistently proven his status as an innovator by co-curating an ambient music series at The Museum of Contemporary art in Los Angeles, and releasing critically acclaimed records such as 2016's Petrol and 2018's Tongue.Chantal Chadwick is a musician, dancer, and founder of Assortment, an agency that supports artists working in photography, motion, and sound with an independent publishing branch for fine art books. The Aggrovators were one of Jamaica's finest session bands, many of the tracks you know and love from the '70s reggae scene probably featured this group of musicians in some shape or form. The band was put together by Bunny "Striker" Lee, one of Jamaica's formidable producers, who, with no studio of his own, had to rely on buying studio time from the existing establishments, such as Randy's Studio or Channel 1. The updating of Studio 1 classics, which in some cases were reworkings of American R&B tunes, was common practice. The rhythms were much loved favorites and there was the added incentive that the musicians knew the tracks inside and out. This set of dubs are straight from the master tapes of such sessions orchestrated by the man Bunny Lee himself, no one knew better -- you can't keep a good tune down never mind a great one...

VA Sound System Rockers: Kingston Town 1969-1975 LP
LP version. 2019 repress. The sound system has become part of today's musical/cultural heritage, playing the people's favorite hits or just as important, breaking some new tunes. But perhaps less known are the roots of the sound system, which began way back when... in Kingston... Around the late 1940s, the sound system began to overtake the big bands that usually played at the dances in Kingston. The American rhythm and blues records that were so popular at the time would find their way to Jamaica via the merchant sailors and migrant workers returning from their stints in America. For economic reasons alone it would pay to have a DJ on hand to play these hits rather than a ten-piece band that could eat and drink the promotor out of the house and on curried goat! The early sound systems were basic affairs built around a single record deck, a valve amp and a speaker. But by the 1950s they had grown to purpose-built speakers the size of wardrobes that could be heard blocks away. Record producer Bunny "Striker" Lee would remember the time "sound systems was like our radio station... not many people on the island would own a wireless, so it was the way for the people to hear their music." This selection of lovers, ballads, root's classics made the sound systems of Jamaica the place to be. So sit back and enjoy the ride... Sound System Rockers... one and all. Features Ken Booth, Horace Andy, Leroy Smart, Dennis Brown, Cornell Campbell, John Holt, Delroy Wilson, Gregory Isaacs, Johnny Clarke, Freddie McGregor, Linval Thompson, Barry Brown, and Pat Kelly.

Double LP version. Includes only exclusive tracks, featuring: Jürgen Paape, Jonathan Kaspar, Thomas/Mayer, Albert Luxus, Julian Stetter, Sascha Funke, Voigt & Voigt, The Modernist, and Justus Köhncke; includes download. You may ask: "In the day and age of streaming playlists and the omnipresence of freely available mixes, what's the use of a label compilation?" The answer is simple: labels still serve as a dearly needed filter mechanism in this tsunami of music we're facing every day. Labels strive to establish trust between artists and listeners. They're like your favorite restaurant around the corner. On the spur of the moment, you might find more excitement in that hip place that just opened somewhere else. But when the novelty fades, you'll always return to your sanctuary. The safe place where they know your name and the last drink is on the house. Kompakt has become such a place for generations of fans and artists alike. And the Total compilation series serves as its menu: always changing but instantly recognizable. As per usual, Total is a collection of the past year's biggest tunes, the creme de la creme of Kompakt's steady output of 12-inches. With Jürgen Paape, the notorious Voigt brothers, Thomas/Mayer, and Jörg Burger -- all founding fathers are on board. Legacy artists Sascha Funke and Justus Köhncke make their long-awaited comebacks, the latter with a kinky Patrick Cowley homage called "Mindless Sex Track". Cologne young blood Julian Stetter nails the starry-eyed, romantic Kompakt signature sound with his remix for an up-and-coming local pop outfit called Albert Luxus. Fellow Colonian Jonathan Kaspar makes his label debut with his slinky track "Renard". DJ Balduin definitely is one to watch in 2020. His massive "E.W.B.A." transcends the friendly populism of an ancient Love Parade anthem while capturing the sincere spirit of today's electro revival. Rex The Dog's "Vortex" and Tom Demac's "Serenade" perfectly showcase why Kompakt is still one of the most played and charted labels in electronic music today. In a scene that is more fragmented than ever these two producers delivered true consensus hits that are cherished on all sizes and shapes of floors beyond genre boundaries. The second half completely belongs to a whole new breed from the label's beloved Speicher series such as ANNA, Yotam Avni, Extrawelt, Raxon, Blackrachas, John Monkman, and La Fleur alongside the label's full-time members Patrice Bäumel, Kölsch, and Gui Boratto.

GOLDIE Saturnz Return (21 Year Anniversary Reissue) 2LP
Double LP version. 180 gram vinyl; Gatefold sleeve, printed with a metallic pantone; Printed inner-sleeves; Includes 29-track download card (with bonus tracks) -- includes the complete full-length triple-CD album. London Records present a 21 Year Anniversary Reissue of Goldie's Saturnz Return, originally released in 1997. Goldie collaborated with London Records as they aimed to identify current artists who apply his innovative, cross-genre experimentation to the contemporary scene. They called upon the essential current Metalheadz pair Gremlinz & Jesta; HLZ, previously of the drum 'n' bass duo Need For Mirrors; the enigmatic Martyn, who continues to push bass music towards a bold new future; Dengue Dengue Dengue, a Peruvian duo who craft a futuristic hybrid of traditional rhythms and modern electronics; and finally the cutting edge and artistically inclined DjRUM, who paused his current no-remix policy when he learned of Goldie's interest. The collection also adds three rarities that were discovered in Goldie's personal archive, all of which shine fresh light on the influence that classical music had upon him. These consist of the string arrangement for "Mother", plus early instrumental versions of "Dragonfly" and "What You Won't Do For Love". It's completed by remixes that were discovered in the London Records archive. Goldie's 1995 debut album Timeless changed the face of music culture. Bringing the nascent drum 'n' bass scene to the masses, the album careered into the Top 10, hit a number of album-of-the-year polls and earned enthusiastic praise from David Bowie. Goldie became a star in the process. But while everyone was eagerly anticipating a repeat of the Timeless formula, Goldie had other ideas. Instead, he pushed his creativity to the max and released Saturnz Return. Brave, innovative, experimental and bursting with emotion, the two-disc 150-minute album proved to be one of the most bold and divisive sets in history. Yet twenty years on, his vision is thoroughly vindicated. His innovative blend of beats and orchestration has been emulated by everyone from Carl Craig to Pete Tong. Saturnz Return is now ready for a long overdue critical appraisal with this"21st Anniversary Edition". Remastered.

SHARI VARI NOW LP
Shari Vari, is a Hamburg based duo comprising of Sophia Kennedy and Helena Ratka. Sophia Kennedy's name might ring a bell to "professional" and unprofessional audience: The Baltimore born and Hamburg bred luminary released her self-titled debut record to quite some critical acclaim on DJ Koze's Pampa Records in 2017, a record that was voted amongst the 20 best electronic records of that year by Pitchfork. Shari Vari are everything you didn't know you were missing in your life. Their lyrics are fresh, funny and "out-there", their melodies are catchy and their rhythms are groovy as hell. Their debut LP on Malka Tuti titled NOW is a collection of eight songs, groovy, gloomy, cheerful, and contemplative, mixed all together in mish-mash of genres and influences. Whether they are echoing Suicide's Alan Vega in songs such as "Out of Order" or "Dance Alone", or telling a story laid over an almost exotic dubby beat in "Jungle", their debut album throws the listener back to the days when having all the music in the world in the palm of your hand was a distant dream, and one would simply listen over and over again to their favorite CD on their Sony (or Panasonic?) disc-player until every note and every word in the lyrics is etched to their memory... 180 gram vinyl.

MUM Yesterday Was Dramatic - Today Is OK (20th Anniversary Edition) 2CD
Morr Music present a 20th Anniversary Edition of múm's Yesterday Was Dramatic - Today Is OK. In 1999, on December 23rd to be precise, the electronic music landscape changed forever. On that day, the now legendary Icelandic band múm released their debut album Yesterday Was Dramatic - Today Is OK. The thing is though, back in the day, hardly anybody realized. It was Christmas after all, people were busy with potentially more important things and didn't pay attention to some kids selling records on Reykjavík's high street. Thankfully, those ten tracks weren't overlooked for long. On the contrary: the album went on to become one of the most influential building blocks of what back then was called electronica and today is considered an art form playing a crucial and important role in shaping and defining the rich electronic music culture of the 21st century. Now, 20 years after the record dropped onto planet Earth, Morr Music is re-issuing the remastered album with its original artwork, adding newly commissioned re-works: a note-for-note representation of "Smell Memory" by Kronos Quartet (with additional drums by múm's Samuli Kosminen), a gentle reinterpretation of "Random Summer" by acclaimed pianist and composer Hauschka and an otherworldly new version of "Ballad Of The Broken String" recorded by label mate Sóley. In 1999, electronic music was in full bloom. Yet the concept of using electronic sounds in acoustic-based productions (or vice versa) was still in its infancy. Many producers were trying, most of them failed. The results felt often forced, fabricated, unimaginative, random, and forgettable. New ideas require new mindsets after all. With Yesterday Was Dramatic - Today Is OK, múm established a new approach in music production. Instead of setting a fixed agenda and working with a distinct hierarchy for their sonic palette, Gyða Valtýsdóttir, Kristín Anna Valtýsdóttir, Gunnar Örn Tynes, and Örvar Smárason let each instrument and sound source be true to itself, creating an ever-evolving universe of sonic bliss. Combining drill-and-bass-inspired beat-chopping, future-informed DSP-programming, ethereal vocal work, indie rock's boominess, folk music's soulful brittleness, and a lofty feeling for melody and arrangement, the album is a rare example of musical transcendence and remains impossible to categorize. Many of the ideas formulated and recorded for the album quickly became an integral part of the canonical self-conception musicians around the world were and still are aspiring to. Includes four remixes produced in the early 2000s by Ruxpin, Bix, µ-Ziq, and Biogen.

PHRYDDERICHS PHAELDA Bruchstuecke LP
Notes On A Journey present a reissue of Phrydderichs Phaelda's Bruchstuecke, originally released in 1981. Even those of you who are already familiar with the label's concept of rediscovering music which has unjustifiably been lost, overlooked, or forgotten will be surprised by the reissue of the six-track-record Bruchstuecke LP by free-jazz artists Phrydderichs Phaelda. This band was a short living school band project of the Gymnasium Voerde Mitte (West-Germany) led by pianist and music teacher Friedrich Schepers joined by other teachers and students: Hans Klimek on bass, Lutz Leonhardt on drums, Wolfgang Kulawik on guitar. In 1975 they went to the studio to record six instrumental tracks in a style that could be best described as jazz/fusion with hints of R'n'B and rock, which are brimming with crisp snare drums played in polyrhythmic and ever-changing patterns and tempos. Alongside that, the astounded listener gets to enjoy thrilling electric guitar lines and breathtaking electric piano excursions together with ultrawarm and elaborate bass guitar parts. All this is held together by the four musicians great overview and ability to improvise and react spontaneously to their fellows. This creates a kind of magic which is rare to hear in music these days. Stefan Leisering and Juergen von Knoblauch, the two record digging members of Jazzanova have immediately understood the unique quality of Bruchstuecke and decided to re-release this overlooked masterpiece. In the course of the original release of this album in the early 1980s only a small amount has been pressed. Now this reissue on Notes On A Journey provides this gem to a larger audience -- to people who share a great interest in the remarkable development of underground jazz in Germany during those years. 180 gram vinyl; Old school tip on cover; Includes download card.

TENESHA THE WORDSMITH Peacocks & Other Savage Beasts CD
Tenesha the Wordsmith, who came to the fore on On The Corner Records' 2018 release Black Noise 2084 (OTCR 001CD/004LP), has delivered a hard-cutting, gut-wrenching, and extremely moving spoken-word album produced by Khalab that brings together different lines of black music -- folkloric, jazz, and electronic dance -- into an Afro-futurist narrative with thunderous results. Peacocks & Other Savage Beasts lays bare difficult truths and projects the stories of hidden voices, with a warm and heartfelt delivery that envelops the soul. The poems are dedicated to the intersection, the places where we contemplate identity, culture, trauma, and love. Peacocks & Other Savage Beasts is a place where they all meet. "I hope between these lines you find healing," says Tenesha. "I hope your compassion for others grows. I hope you will make the decision you were afraid to make. I hope you will learn how to turn pain into power and purpose. Decide which type of beast you want to be and if you can't make up your mind, watch the women..." Originally from Oakland, California, "a place where revolutionaries are born," Tenesha the Wordsmith originally began to fuse hip-hop and poetry while living in Albany, New York, where she created her first collection Body Of Work (2016). Her early influences have returned with features from beatboxers and vocalists that give the album a distinctly urban hip-hop vibe. CD version comes in a four-panel digipak.

BARKER Utility 2LP
Double LP version. "We all dance away our lives to the tune of the sovereign pleasure-pain axis." --David Pearce, The Hedonistic ImperativePleasure-seeking and pain-avoidance as a rave metaphor fits the music of Sam Barker. The Berghain resident and Leisure System co-founder has spent the last few years exploring the euphoric potential of altering key variables in dance music formulas. This was especially true on his 2018 Ostgut Ton debut EP Debiasing (OSTGUT 112EP), which was flush with unconventional rhythmic chord stabs, melody, and percussion but devoid of kickdrums. What seemed like an experimental exercise on paper was in reality equally geared towards the club: tracks that worked for the floor but resisted the genre categorizations that kick drums often provide. This has come to define Barker's sound. Now, on his debut solo album Utility, Barker turns his focus toward melding experimentation and dancefloor pragmatism with the psychology behind the musical decision-making process. In his own words: "After Debiasing it occurred to me that my musical decisions were often unintentionally utilitarian, following an instinct to maximize pleasure in one way or another. It's sort of unfashionable to admit, but by removing elements that have strong genre associations, this became a natural consequence." Accordingly, Utility is a playful but non-ironic musical approach to a whole spectrum of utilitarian and transhumanist ideas: from models for quantifying pleasure and "gradients of bliss" to abolishing suffering for sentient beings (not just people) through the ethical use of drugs and nanotechnology. Over nine tracks, Barker's vision ebbs-and-flows through waves of deeply psychedelic musical vignettes; free-floating and futuristic melodies and rhythms as targeted brain stimulation. The sound draws heavily on modular synthesis, as well as self-built mechanical instruments and plate reverbs to create atmospheres that are at once alien and emotionally recognizable, functional, and utopian. Utility is by no means a concept album. Instead, it is an honest take on music as both pleasure-maximizer and consciousness-expander.

STEFFI X VIRGINIA Work A Change 2x12"
Steffi and Virginia return with Work A Change, an eight-track double-EP on Ostgut Ton inviting you into new dimensions of the sonic world they have crafted together over a number of years. Since their iconic 2011 collaboration "Yours" -- which became an instant classic -- the duo has experimented with new ways to express their unique strand of dancefloor melancholy. Unlike the grand maximalism often associated with vocals in dance music, Steffi and Virginia's creations use the voice less as a centerpiece and more an integral part of the groove itself, subtle in temperament and equal to its counterparts. Impassioned vocals spiral around melodic leads and warm harmonies, offering a gentle kind of catharsis that deepens with each listen. Work A Change immediately transports you to a parallel aural universe, refusing to settle into one style and merging multiple references into peculiar new formats. Opening track "Be True To Me" is subdued but inviting, working its way into the conscious with harmonic glitches and a deep, grooving bass lead. "Sight From Above" then slows things down for an angular cut of low-slung machine funk. The B-side, "Help Me Understand" lands you on another planet entirely, complete with extraterrestrial synths and animated robotics. Opening up the C-side, "Until You're Begging" is a molecular construction of fragmented motifs, both precise and hazy at the same time. Similarly, "Internal Bleeding" takes segments of percussive grooves and rearranges them into complex polyrhythms whilst retaining a careful sense of balance. Closing off the release is title track "Work A Change"; one last high-speed voyage into spiraling drums and hammer drill bass. Work A Change expands on Steffi and Virginia's aesthetic, merging elements from a number of genres into a cerebral, highly personal release. It also signals a change of direction for the duo's work, voyaging through new terrain while retaining a sound that is undoubtedly their own.

MOHOLO OCTET, LOUIS Spirits Rejoice! LP
Otoroku present the first vinyl reissue of Louis Moholo Octet's Spirits Rejoice!, originally released in 1978 on Ogun Recordings. One of the most legendary free jazz records ever produced, Spirits Rejoice! is a high achievement in the movement of the era as it soars beyond oppression with a raucous and spiritually uplifting surge of movement and melody. Featuring Harry Miller, Johnny Dyani, Keith Tippett, Evan Parker, Nick Evans, Radu Malfatti, and Kenny Wheeler, this is former Blue Note artist Louis Moholo's first album under his own name and is a classic example of the cross-pollination between South African and British players. Mongezi Feza's 'You Ain't Gonna Know Me 'Cos You Think You Know Me" alone is enough to make your life a better place. Made with permission and in association with Ogun Recordings. Features an exact reproduction of the original artwork and liner notes, along with new liner notes from Matthew Wright. Remastered by Giuseppe IIelasi. High gloss sleeve; edition of 1000.From Matthew Wright's new liner notes: "The South African melodies, now so familiar, were wholeheartedly taken on board by the individual musicians, their unity of purpose mirroring the belief in the strength of the collective. Stunning solos, often close to the edge, feature throughout -- Evan Parker and Keith Tippett on 'Shine Wherever You Are'; the contrasting trombone styles of Nick Evans and Radu Malfatti on 'You Ain't Gonna Know Me...'; the octet sounding like a full big band; and behind them, the relentlessly rhythmic urgency of the piano, bass and drums. Add to this Kenny Wheeler's moving and all-encompassing trumpet on the elegiac 'Amaxesha Osizi' and the joyous flamboyancy of 'Wedding Hymn' with Parker's relatively straight-ahead tenor and Tippett's dextrous piano solo over a bed of riffing horns, (fast) walking bass lines and a supreme sense of swing. Louis' early hero, Big Sid Catlett, would have loved it!"

ACID KING Busse Woods CD
"Every small town encompasses that one long stretch of forest where kids run to get high, jam out, and just escape. For San Francisco-based stoner metal trio, Acid King vocalist, guitarist, frontwoman, and mastermind Lori Woods, Busse Woods offered such a retreat in her native Illinois as a teenager in the '70s. This 3,700-acre section of the Cook County Forest Preserve system beckoned her during high school with its buffet of dope, frisbee challenges, and Black Sabbath blaring from numerous trunks well past sundown. Those days left such an imprint on Lori she titled Acid King's second full-length released in 1999 Busse Woods. Celebrating its 20th year with a special reissue on Riding Easy Records and tour in 2019, it represents the heart and soul of the band. The album still exudes the same sense of mysticism it did upon release in 1999. As the story goes, Lori and bandmates Joey Osbourne (drums) and Brian Hill (bass) entered a practice space to write the full-length follow-up to their debut Down With The Crown. Organically, they jammed out five originals and a take on '39 Lashes' from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar. As everything gelled, they recorded with legendary engineer Billy Anderson. Prominent Bay Area artist Frank Kozik initially released the CD on his Man's Ruin record label. Then 'everything fell apart.' Behind the scenes, personal and professional relationships crumbled. Marriages ended. Lineups shifted. In the face of such tumult, the music of Busse Woods rarely got its due on stage in the aftermath, even though the aesthetic would prove influential. In the middle of various reissues and re-releases, Acid King kept touring internationally throughout Europe and Japan from 2005-2015. In between this time, they jammed on riffs and started to craft songs but ultimately didn't kick it into high gear to finish the release until 2015. They reawakened in the studio with the 2015 opus, Middle Of Nowhere, Center Of Everywhere. While the new music caught critical acclaim and fan approval, a funny thing happened, and Busse Woods also came back to life. Its songs would generate the most streams on Spotify. They'd generate loud responses in concert and became their most critically acclaimed release to date. The stars aligned. Twenty years down the line, it felt only right for Lori and Co. to revisit this landmark and give it the proper tour it deserves."

VELTHEIM, ERKKI Ganzfeld Experiment LP
For well over a decade, Erkki Veltheim has been involved in some of the most critical contemporary sound works performed in Australia. Celebrated widely for his performance approach, that orbits outward from his extended violin practice, Erkki Veltheim's recorded works are grossly under represented. With Ganzfeld Experiment, his first published solo recording, he lays out his methodology for creating music that is intense and provocatively extrasensory. Veltheim's Ganzfeld experiment is an audiovisual work for electric violin, video, and signal processing. In parapsychology, a Ganzfeld experiment is a test for evidence of extrasensory perception, particularly telepathic communication. It is based on the Ganzfeld (German for "total field") effect, which describes the tendency of our central nervous system to invent patterns in random, uniform sensory data, for instance hearing voices in white noise or seeing images in visual static. In a Ganzfeld experiment, a test subject is exposed to such a continuous uniform stimulus field, while another person attempts to send them telepathic messages. Using this premise as a starting point, this edition replicates elements of this experiment in order to explore synaesthetic hallucinations. The electric violin's signal acts as a tool for gradually manipulating and transforming static noise in both the audio and visual domains. Drawing influence from esoteric and occult numerology, Tony Conrad and Brion Gysin's experiments with flicker and the Dreamachine, and Terry Riley's Persian Surgery Dervishes (1972), which fuses composition with improvisation in a long-form ecstatic and trance-like work, Ganzfeld Experiment resides in a tradition of transcendental minimalism. From Erkki: "I'm always interested in how structure interacts with randomness, form with formlessness, and ways in which sound can be used to transform a listener's perception and sense of time and place. I'm also often looking for ways to expand my musical ideas to other media, through ritual, installation, or visual elements. An important motive in my work is the idea that through sound (and these other elements) we can enter different realms of experience: the mystical, the magical, the shamanistic. In Ganzfeld Experiment, as in many other of my works, I'm particularly searching for an ecstatic experience, one that transports the audience outside of their rational, everyday selves. The constantly panning white noise and visual flicker are intended to induce a hallucinatory state where one's sense of time and perception are disoriented, becoming prone to suggestibility by the repetitive but subtly morphing sounds and images."

Out of focus, relaxed and expansive vibes fuse together into serpentine rivers of minimalist rhythms and echoed tones, drawing the listener into tunnels of sound and scorched sonic landscapes -- its one for the headphones at 30,000 feet or late-night deserted drives. The album finds three heads taking time out to dive into the dronal repetitions of deep space, three psychonauts killing time in the only way they know how: head-nodding drumfuzz layered with creamed strings. Guest guitar from fellow sike-head John McBain appears on the final half of this 40-minute trip! It takes the autobahn, veering left past the sun and heading on till morning. BLACK LIGHT SMOKE Nothing Makes Me Feel (Good Anymore) 12"
An extended EP from Black Light Smoke. "Nothing Makes Me Feel (Good Anymore)" sets the tone with a snappy beat and a slightly melancholic vocal sample. "Street Emotion" convinces with tasty dryness over a characteristic bass-wobble. "Get Something" is beat-focused and dressed up with G-House vocal splinters which make it groovy as hell. "The Right Way" surfs on a wave of juicy chords and laidback vocals. "Hustle" has some serious jack-flavor, transporting all the best of Chicago's warehouse sound while "Golden Chains" is driven by a sophisticated garage bass-line.

SIROM A Universe that Roasts Blossoms for a Horse CD
Slovenian "imaginary folk" instrumental trio return with a kaleidoscopic third album. Handmade and global instrumentation meets fearless sound exploration. There's a sequence in Memoryscapes, a lovely French-made short film, in which Sirom set about fashioning music from a pile of pots, pans, saucepan lids and empty cans of supermarket lager on the kitchen table. The three members of the band -- Ana Kravanja, Samo Kutin, and Iztok Koren, in any order you like for this is a collective endeavor -- are gently fending off any question that attempts to reduce their music to type. "Imaginary folk" is Samo's preferred description, but the word "preferred" is doing some heavy lifting here. The band are more than happy to bust two myths that seem to have grown up in the last couple of years. First, this is not Slovenian traditional (or traditional Slovenian) music. It might be produced from and by each of the three landscapes in which the band were raised -- the Karst, the hills of Tolmin, the eastern plains of Prekmurje -- but unpicking what came from where is an impossible endeavor. That leads you to the second misconception: that Sirom are an improvisational band. For sure, improvisation is an indispensable part of the initial songwriting process; but it's an expression of their collective manner of working rather than any musical statement per se. Keen-eared listeners will hear a continuation of the last song on Clay Snapper (GB 051CD, LP) in the first song of the new record: a nod, perhaps, to the fact that they began work on the new record immediately after the last. But whatever has gone into the music, from the band's home landscapes to their previous and in some cases still current musical projects (classical, hardcore, flatlands post-rock), Sirom sound like no one else. The world of the new record -- A Universe that Roasts Blossoms for a Horse -- is indeed subtly different to that of the last: the viola still teases and tugs at the percussion and the banjo still periodically tries to break free and set up on its own, but there's a glimpse of electricity in "A Pulse Expels Its Brothers and Sisters", courtesy of Samo's homemade tampura bra?, more vocals, albeit as unsettling as ever, and a new sense of spaces being pried open.

FROGS, THE It's Only Right and Natural LP
"30th Anniversary Vinyl Reissue. Originally released in 1989 on Homestead Records. Long before Dennis and Jimmy Flemion found themselves adopted by avatars as far flung as Jim O'Rourke and Sebastian Bach, before their Cause célèbre lead to a near-boycott (of a record label no one was buying records from anyway) and certainly before Beck Hansen had the bright idea to sample, 'that was a good drum break' from 'I Don't Care If U Disrespect Me (Just So You Love Me)', there were the songs. The goddamn Made Up Songs. On cassette tapes. Legend has it they fell into the hands of my friends and I due to the patronage of one or two midwestern underground rock luminaries but I prefer to believe it was an otherworldly intervention that first brought 'Out Of The Mist' to my basement boom box (albeit on the flilpside of a live Die Kreuzen recording). To call the impact seismic would be an understatement; I've yet to recover! Is it fair to say that arm-twisting the Flemions into a thematically consistent 'It's Only Right & Natural' did their prior and future works a disservice? Probably. Simply because it's one of the most inspired albums of all-time, DIY or not -- doesn't mean they peaked (if you're inclined to investigate further, you'll figure it out. And if you're not inclined to investigate further, I'm pretty sure you and I have absolutely nothing to say to each other). Is it fair to say Homestead's ill-advised attempt to claim FROGS was an acronym for 'FOUNDING REVOLUTIONARIES OF GAY SUPREMACY' was a profoundly stupid gesture, guaranteed to lead to no good whatsoever? Not exactly. I don't remember getting any advice. All of that aside, IOR&N more than holds up as a monumental WHAT THE FUCK moment in pop history, even if it only skims the surface of the brothers' respective skill sets and vast influences. Many of us have the album's lyrics, Jimmy and Dennis' vocal delivery committed to memory, though bear in mind, those in possession of the Homestead CD version only heard some bizzaro mono mix (THIS WAS SOMEONE ELSE'S FAULT, BLAME ME FOR EVERYTHING BUT THIS) so there's every chance this might be the first time you're hearing this glorious album the way it was truly intended. And if you are having that wondrous experience -- being introduced to such a rich cast of characters (Hot Cock Annie, Baby Greaser George Richard Dick Richards), it would be an overstatement to say I envy you. But only a very slight overstatement (for instance, it might depend on what you look like and how much money you have). LOVE YOU DENNIS, THANKS FOR EVERYTHING. FROGS 4 EVER" --Gerard Cosloy, 2019

"Third Man Records is proud to present a truly rare musical oddity -- a two disc collection of primal and unhinged Greek village music that at times sounds more like free jazz or doom folk, feral and trance-like as it is. After years of research, fieldwork and collecting, Christopher King -- Grammy-winning producer, sound-engineer, curator and writer -- has gathered together from his private 78 rpm archive the most mind expanding and libido inducing song and dance music from the rural hinterlands of mainland Greece and its islands. Recorded between 1907 and 1960, this collection contains the first and the last -- the alpha and the omega - of Greek demotika -- or folk music. And it is not what you would expect. Remastered from the original 78 rpm discs, this set contains 28 previously unissued recordings made in the cramped, primitive studios of Athens, Greece, New York, NY, and Chicago, IL. Crazed Macedonian bagpipes, keening violins, shiver-inducing zournas and shepherd-pipes are found throughout the two discs. Cover artwork is by legendary underground artist R. Crumb and designed by Grammy winning Susan Archie. A beautifully thought-provoking if not radical essay on this music by King accompanies the lavish package. Not simply for historians or collectors of long-gone sounds, this compilation is intended to push the limits of what we have come to expect of music, its purpose and indeed its origin. You will experience a profound musical transformation immediately upon listening."

MONKS Hamburg Recordings 1967 CD
"The Monks -- a strange, rare group with a story that sounds like a drunk friend's generous hyperbole. A group of American G.I.s stationed in Germany on the precipice of Western cultural revolution starts playing music loosely connected to the rock n' roll craze, contrastingly incorporating a critical and often offensive avant-garde edge. Nothing was off limits -- screeching vocals, dark aesthetics, staccato-strummed banjo, sardonic lyricism, critiques of the Vietnam War and full monk costuming down to the tonsure. When viewed on the whole, it seems like an art school student's senior thesis on what the craze means and its future possibilities. Due in large part to original Polydor vinyl collectability and years in the word-of-mouth hype machine, their legend and cult status has steadily blossomed since their last shows in 1967. Fast forward to 2017, the crew at Third Man, already huge fans, are presented with an honest-to-God treasure trove of original Monks photos, newspaper clippings, business cards, letterhead, contracts, postcards and, yes, analog tapes, containing trailblazing, wild compositions completely unheard by public ears. 'I'm Watching You' would have been recorded on February 28th, 1967 at the same sessions that would produce the Monks' final single 'Love Can Tame the Wild' b/w 'He Went Down to the Sea'. The remaining four songs were recorded after hours in the Top Ten Club later that year, just prior to the break-up of the band. These songs have been unreleased for 50 years and are quite possibly the last music left to be heard by this legendary band."

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & HIS MAGIC BAND Trout Mask Replica 2LP
Repressed again. "Trout Mask Replica is a touchstone in the history of recorded music. The mix of dada absurdist blues and previously unexplored experimental avenues has long been praised as one of the greatest albums of all time. As so eloquently put by John Peel, 'If there has been anything in the history of popular music which could be described as a work of art in a way that people who are involved in other areas of art would understand, then Trout Mask Replica is probably that work.' In full partnership with the Zappa Family Trust and to celebrate the relaunch of the seminal Bizarre label imprint, Third Man Records is proud to announce Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band's Trout Mask Replica. Out of print on vinyl for nearly ten years, this remaster was helmed by industry legend Bob Ludwig and cut by the estimable Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering. Utilizing crystalline-quality safety masters kept in the Zappa family vault for decades by the trustworthy Joe Travers, the audio here is positively glorious. Every last skronk breathes full life into the room. Every twisted guitar figure uncurls onto paths previously unpaved. Every last bark and howl shines resolute through the vast emptiness of your mind. Previous countless Trout Mask Replica repressings used scans of scans of scans of the cover image, but the original Cal Schenkel cover photo has been tracked down and reproduced here at its clearest -- its resolution from the original release in 1969. If you've only ever seen a jpg online or fuzzy, smeared-looking CD issues from the 90's, be prepared to be wowed by the fully engaging spectrum this iconic image casts. This 2xLP is pressed on heavyweight 180-gram black vinyl for that full-on frenetic feeling. 180g vinyl, gatefold Stoughton tip-on jacket, booklet insert."

VELOSO, CAETANO Caetano Veloso LP
"The Tropicalia art movement of the late 1960s, with flourishes in visual art, poetry, theatre and music, is one of Brazil's most adored cultural concoctions. It was a movement which began out of necessity, shortly after a repressive military dictatorship seized power after 20 years of peaceful democracy. The term Tropicalia first came from the mind of Brazilian visual artist Helio Oiticica, whose eponymous piece consisted of a sandy maze bordered by tropical Brazilian flora and, at the end, a television set. Through satirizing symbols of their homeland and rejecting a pre-established national culture, the Tropicalists constructed a new form of 'aggressive nationalism' outside of an innately anti-imperialist Left and an unthinkingly patriotic Right. By refusing to accept underdevelopment as their identity and excitedly 'devouring' disparate culture (low and high brow, domestic and foreign, etc.), the Tropicalists carved out a unifying creative space, a universal sound, different from the older, bourgeois bossa nova movement and the newer, undiscerning rock movement. Caetano Veloso's self-titled debut solo album is one of the most important and influential Brazilian (and, dare we say, South American) albums of all time. With the release of this seminal album, Veloso would become the leading voice of Tropicalia. The songs on this album immediately connected with people. Alegria, Algeria was his breakout hit that gained traction as a hymn for liberty advocates, juxtaposing images of Coca Cola, guerrilla groups, bombs and Brigitte Bardot as part of the everyday experience. The album's first song Tropicalia was an anthem for the whole movement; it's a fragmented allegory, a structure borrowed from friends in the concrete poetry scene, touching on divergent cultural symbols, events, allusions and idioms, nimbly representing and critiquing the many contradictions in the new Brazilian dictatorship. Superbacana (translated as 'Supergroovy') follows a hyperbolic superhero's use of technology to fight a gang of cowboys led by the money-hungry Uncle Scrooge, serving as allusions to American imperialism and greed felt in their country, all in the rapid-fi re structure of a comic book. The subtext in all these songs, which the dictatorship would not immediately catch, were that these repressed but glaring contradictions, not the bountiful sunny paradise that the military regime was pushing, were the true national identity. Unfortunately, these cleverly veiled jabs in Veloso and his contemporaries' bodies of work gained greater and greater exposure as the movement became more and more popular, leading to the arrest, imprisonment and forced exile of Veloso and many of his cohort. Despite these difficulties, the Tropicalists continued creating in exile, strongly influencing artists both at home and abroad. This is the first authorized North American vinyl issue of Caetano Veloso. Whether you're a longtime fan or first-time listener, Third Man Records could not be more proud to spread the compelling story of this album, this artist and the Tropicalia movement."

Trading Places present a reissue of The Signal To Noise Set, originally released in small numbers in 1984 on London's short-lived Only A Revolution label. The ultra-rare various artists release showcased the Australian variant of minimalist wave, analog synth-pop. The eleven exclusives featured on the compilation are all prime examples of Australia's synth band underground, and although each group was totally unknown outside of their sphere of influence, some have gone on to attain legendary status. Opening track "The Great X1" comes from Melbourne's Infomatics, an art-school group armed with a four-track and a battery of electronic goodies, including a Roland SH- 101, a Korg MS-20, and plenty of processed guitar. Aussie techno pioneers Modern Jazz was the brainchild of the multi-instrumentalist (and future Einstürzende Neubauten collaborator) known as Ash Wednesday, a veteran of the Adelaide-born, Melbourne-based punk band JAB (as well as Models, The Metronomes, and electro group Thealonian Music); the Modern Jazz project was based on randomly generated electronic pulses, with a shifting line-up, featuring Lyn Gordon on vocals and Andrew Phillpott on synth. Experimental duo Second Glance was comprised of members of Modern Jazz and Gilded Youth, and there are tracks by Melbourne trios Shanghai Au Go-Go and Human Backs plus Adelaide five-piece Nuvo Bloc, while experimental duo Dono-Detti are allocated three songs of their own. Overall, this provides a fine introduction to a little-known Aussie fringe scene, captured shortly after its inception. Also features Software Seduction and Into The East.

The nascent band rehearsed for about one year, playing very few live gigs, before cutting demos in April 1970, their pensive sound miles away from the British blues blueprint that then dominated London, though there was the occasional hard-rock element beneath their pastoral prog. By the time that proper recording sessions were booked at Marquee Studios to cut a single with producer John Schroeder (who had worked with countless acts, including The Shadows and Status Quo), Short had been replaced by former Rumplestiltskin drummer Ricky "Rupert" Baer. The resultant single "Green Eyed God" surfaced on Penny Farthing in 1971 and although it only managed to reach number 51 on the British charts, the song hit number 17 in Germany. By the time further sessions were arranged at Delane Lea studios to yield a debut LP, the group's rhythm section now featured bassist Jeff Watts and drummer Chris "The Rat" Martin. Somehow, Penny Farthing wasn't very impressed by the album itself, leading to its initial release in Germany via Bellaphon; it did not receive a British release until three years later, by which time there had been further line-up changes and a shift towards glam. Nevertheless, Green Eyed God remains an enticing slice of little-known prog, unjustly ignored at its time of creation.

BRITTON, CHRIS As I Am LP
Trading Places present a reissue of Chris Britton's As I Am, originally released in 1969. Recording a solo album in 1969 allowed Troggs guitarist Chris Britton to take a stab at greater artistic freedom, though the presence of a familiar set of suspects meant that the resultant LP, As I Am, didn't veer too far from The Troggs' standard blend of poppy psychedelia and garage rock, constructed with a particular English bent. Producer and keyboardist Colin Frechter shaped the group's Mixed Bag release (1968), and his wistful harpsichord on tracks like "If You Really Care" lend a baroque air to the proceedings, and both bassist Tony Murray and drummer Nigel Olsson were then working as The Troggs' rhythm section (after having been in band Plastic Penny), while Olsson and fellow drummer Roger Pope were part of Elton John's band, as was harmonica player Ian Duck. Yet, with Britton composing all of the songs except one (his version of Larry Weiss's oft-covered "Evil Woman," which had also been tackled by The Troggs), the material is surprisingly varied, with opener "Sit Down Beside Me" and tracks like "Fly With Me" are rocking grooves with bright brass, Latin-esque percussion and a bit of psychedelic phasing, while "No Sense In Hiding" is a slinky blues and "Sleep My Love" is pure dreamy psych. A rare and underappreciated gem that will appeal to all Troggs fans and lovers of British psychedelia more generally.

CAM, PHILIPPE Rotterdam 2LP
Philippe Cam is the Thomas Pynchon of the electronic music world. Little is known about him and only a couple of pictures have been put online since he emerged on this planet to write his first and only album in 2001 (TRAUM 003CD). All that's known is that he worked as a sailor and that's it. If you dig deeper you might find out that he worked as a DJ in the beginning of the '90s in Brussels and began to study electronic music there and also began to write music for theaters and ballets. So what's new with his music? Basically, the art of filtering is still his passion. Maybe he can be less associated with techno and the themes of his new tracks emerge in a more distinctive pattern? The energy of his early techno days in Brussels have returned here in a fierce way with some of the tracks. The rhythmic movements are classy and stick with you. Whereas other tracks look for a distinctive relaxation of some kind. The album kicks off with the mellow and soothing "Cocoa Beach". A gentle beat that moves like bodies swaying in the hot summer sun. "Manga" feels like an acceleration to the moon, the contemplative moments come in spurts and hide in the intervals of the chords which are on the loose. "Short Summer" is heavy and violent. As intensive as it is, it knows when to stop and disappear. Be prepared for "Vermillions Sands", some Terry Riley might lure around the corner to offer you some oranges on a silver plate, but don't eat them. Maybe the best ambient track ever written. Rotterdam was home for Philippe Cam for a long time but not anymore. "Rotterdam" seems mechanical and rusty and spooky and divided. "Bis" is a short episode of a track, and before you can comment on it, it is already over. "The Game" is a mule of a track. It has a quiet stubborn sequence that bites and kicks you in the back without any change in near sight. "Ultimate Fly For Halloway" somehow orchestrates how you might feel after you climbed a 8000 meter high mountain and reached the top. "Last Track" is a true minimalistic piece of music that manages to make contact with other genres and does this with elegance, determination and a lot of soul. Cover art by Yvette Klein.

LUNCH LADY Angel CD
Lunch Lady are a sparky group from Los Angeles redolent of the desert heat, pining hearts and that chorus-soaked cloak of sound held dear by followers of British early '80s post-punk. Numbering four, Lunch Lady consist of Rachel Birke (vocals), Juan Velasquez (guitar), Victor Herrera (bass), and Robert Wolfe (drums). The band began in 2017 when Velasquez asked Birke if she'd like to start a new music project with him, their respective other groups Abe Vigoda and Heller Keller having co-existed in LA's DIY orbit. Lunch Lady's dreamy punk forays into country ballad territory certainly swoop into sentiment, but it's the melancholy of artifice that defines their outlook. Lunch Lady recruited friends Herrera and Wolfe into the rhythm section, swiftly recorded a demo and started playing live. The band's music began to grow into sun-warped vignettes, often miniaturist character-studies in outlook. These songs are studded with unquiet recollection, all delivered with a curious objectivity that pulls the listener into the circle. Birke's vocal is unhurried and assured, pressing her characters' motives and words into the sprightly guitar trails and jogged rhythms that characterize the sound of the band. During the summer of 2018, Lunch Lady had assembled the tracks for their debut album, which they took into the studio towards the year's close. Lunch Lady's debut album, Angel was recorded at Gauchos Electronics, a key studio in the history of Los Angeles punk and the place where many of their peers had laid down albums previously, including Gun Outfit, Feels, Ty Segall, and No Age. Angel is an album of resounding yearning, of cold fire and hot, sticky blood. It's an album of troubled tales, buried hearts and wandering homeward. Throughout, Birke's narrative-heavy lyrics keep things themed and theatrical. This is most strongly felt on cinematic swirls of song like "Preacher Man" and clicky, strummer "Sweet One". The stunning track "Dolores" creeps and ranges around under a dark cloud of disclosure. "Window" whirls by with all the flourish of a card trick. Drums tumble whilst the guitar line twists through the taut stretch and sprint of the bass turns. Thematically, Lunch Lady's debut cascades with crumpled wishes and hotly recalled visions. The album swims with a type of anxious nostalgia. Birke's cover art of a flaming Cadillac falling through the sky is a case in point. Produced by Pascal Stevenson. Engineered and mixed by Scott Cornish. Mastered by Mikey Young. CD version comes in an edition of 500.

PELT Pearls From The River LP
"VHF presents the first time on vinyl for Pearls From The River, the all acoustic epics album from the 'classic' Pelt trio lineup of Jack Rose, Mike Gangloff, and Patrick Best. Recorded in a single March 2003 session in Virginia by Mikel Dimmick, this was a superb distillation of their interests at the time (both alone and together -- Rose's first solo records, the emergence of the Black Twigs as a busy working band, etc). 'Up the North Fork' is a trio for banjo, baritone banjo, and cello -- after the snakey bowed introduction, the fast thwacking of the banjos and forcefully strummed cello take over and whip up a storm. The other two tracks are lengthy ragas (one in C, one in D) with the virtuoso modal guitar of Rose front and center. The title track features Rose on twelve-string, dueling with Mike Gangloff on esraj. Best's thick, sonorous double-bass bowing anchors the duet between the lightning thrumming/plucking of Rose's guitar and Gangloff's arcing, sharply bowed half-time melody. 'Road To Catawba' has Rose on six-string, with Gangloff moving to tamboura. Best's bass is again the foundation, with whistling overtones rising from his bow over the low drone. Liner notes by Byron Coley. 'Join Pelt in celebrating the ecstatic joy that results from refusing to accept the alleged primacy of shit-culture. It does not exist if we will not believe in it. And we must refuse it on all levels always. The proof of its surrender is at hand. Yr hand. Right now, motherfucker!' --Byron Coley"

The third installment of Watergate Affairs focuses on unearthing talent from outside the crew's immediate circle. Danish duo Baime contribute the glistening "Majka" that entrances with a mix of cosmic synths and ethnic scales. Tel Aviv's Kadosh returns with the seductive "Better Days", a beautiful piano-led piece that stands apart thanks to the artist's deft arrangement skills. Buenos Aires born, Ibiza-based Kintar drops the evocative "Paradisou", that builds with bass stabs, an exotic vocal line, and swirling pads. The perky "Lucero Del Alma" rounds out the pack, the label debut from Argentine Kevin Di Serna.

VA Down Home Blues: Detroit 3CD
"Down Home Blues: Detroit is the definitive collection of blues music from Detroit-based musicians from the late 1940s to the early 1960s. It features over 20 artists who were influential in developing the Detroit blues scene, including John Lee Hooker, Bo Bo Jenkins, Sam Kelly, Eddie Kirkland, Little Sonny, Detroit Count, Eddie Burns, Baby Boy Warren, Big Ed And His Combo and many more. This three CD set, packaged in a deluxe digipak with an outer slip case, features 82 rare tracks, all digitally remastered, with some unissued recordings and others which have not been available for decades. Includes a 48 page book featuring an essay on the origins of Detroit music by renowned blues researcher and historian Mike Rowe, complete with rare photos, tracklisting and full sessionography. Detroit, Michigan. A northern city -- smaller but akin to Chicago -- where country southern blacks migrated to find work and found themselves within new urban surroundings. Amongst their numbers were blues musicians who took with them their traditional sounds. It began to develop with a more aggressive feel which grew with them in their new urban life surroundings. There are 21 different artists here. There is extreme. There are selections of players who encompassed into small combo group recordings to the solo player whose sound without doubt was perfect without any extra accompaniment. There are artists here who made many more commercial recordings than others, who maybe got just one record out. By luck there are some unissued recordings - from unearthed rare acetate discs. The definitive three album collection of Down Home Blues from Detroit!"
