PALE BLUE The Past We Leave Behind 2LP
Double LP version. 2015 release. Mike Simonetti split from Italians Do It Better to focus on his new project, Pale Blue, as well as his new venture: the freshly minted label 2MR (Two Mikes Records). A collaboration between Simonetti and Captured Tracks, 2MR is an opportunity for Simonetti to start from a blank slate and release music he believes in. The first release on 2MR was The Past We Leave Behind, the debut album from Pale Blue. During the writing process of Capricorn Rising (2011), Simonetti was asked to remix tracks from the West Coast twosome Silver Hands. Immediately taken by the incredible range of lead-vocalist Elizabeth Wight, he reached out to collaborate. The result of the bi-coastal email exchange would eventually become Pale Blue. Pale Blue, referencing the term "Pale Blue Dot" coined by Carl Sagan to refer to a photograph of planet Earth taken by the Voyager 1 space probe in 1990, was originally conceived around the time that Hurricane Sandy hit New York and came to completion with Simonetti's severance from Italians Do It Better. Thus, many of the tracks that make up The Past grapple with themes of loss and new beginnings. The Past encompasses a myriad of sonic elements, ranging from rhythmic, melodic techno to atmospheric ambient productions, while also incorporating Simonetti's varied background in noise, drone, and even experimental dream pop. Above it all though, Wight's vocals remain the focal point, saturating the record with a lush melodic warmth that's so often missing in the electronic world. Musically, Pale Blue is a response to modern dance music and its constant fluctuations. It intentionally bears no obvious singles, nor club hits. While Simonetti, Wight and Jana Hunter (vocals on "Dusk In Parts") remain at its core, Pale Blue's philosophy is to keep everything open to collaboration. It does not aim to pigeonhole itself into a genre or any new vistas in music, but instead to a unifying sound produced collectively and harmoniously.

DUST Agony Planet CD
2016 release. Fantasy Techno collective Dust -- a trio comprised of audio engineer Michael Sherburn, DIY nightlife entrepreneur John Barclay, and multi-disciplinary artist Greem Jellyfish -- present their debut full-length, Agony Planet. The nightmarish, alien horror narrative is released on Mike Simonetti's 2MR imprint. Immersed in Brooklyn's DIY rave community, all three members held roles in the genesis of notable extinct venues 285 Kent and Trip House, and now Bossa Nova Civic Club. In 2012, Sherburn and Barclay joined forces to found Dust and were joined shortly thereafter by Jellyfish; the following year they released their first 12", Onset of Decimation, on Mannequin (MNQ 039EP). Between 2013 and 2015, they released several more 12", two on Mannequin, as well as one for Sci-Fi & Fantasy and one for 2MR. Over these years, with Sherburn at the helm, the framework and themes for Agony Planet began to be conceptualized. Thirteen tracks, spanning in genre from digital hardcore, dungeon techno, and celestial ambience, are all held together by a theme of extravagant extraterrestrial warfare. Club-savvy techno engineering accompanied by frontwoman Greem Jellyfish's bizarre monologues and warped screams beckon listeners on a journey through the occult mysticism of the nightmarish and torturous deep ocean of an alien hell. Agony Planet is an unrelenting and bold debut from a trio not afraid to explore the dark caverns of the underground.

BOTTIN I Have What I Gave CD
2017 release. On I Have What I Gave, Italian musician Bottin outdoes himself. He crafts propulsive, disco-laden scores for films not yet made, and introspective, mind-expanding cuts designed to ensure that people who want to dance never get caught up in conventional experiences. There's the hypnotic, pop-disco cut "Y-A-M-L" featuring past collaborator Lavinia Claws on vocals. It existed in parts for a decade before coming together during the sessions for this album. It's an energetic and transcendent affair. "L'Amore" has a foundation that recalls the cascading minimalism of Steve Reich and the cinematic work of the likes of Howard Shore. By the time the beat comes in, it's pretty clear this is no mere exercise in routine nu-disco. Another cut that proves Bottin should be scoring films is "Varosha" with its dark, arena-sized John Carpenter vibes that traffic in dystopia to balance out the bubbling optimism of "L'Amore". The record's quest extends back in time on "Perfect Mind", featuring words from the ancient Greek prayer, "The Thunder, Perfect Mind" found amid the famous Nag Hammadi texts in Egypt in 1945. Over a pulsating, acidy backdrop the words are delivered through various vocal synthesis engines, evoking a cold, artificially intelligent singularity discussing the most human of matters. All throughout an album filled with intricate and nuanced arrangements, Bottin doesn't forget to keep people moving. There's "Stellar Parade" another in a line of great collaborations with legendary Italian electronic musician Alexander Robotnick. There's also "Twenty-Three" an organic-sounding arp bath that perfectly channels the tension that builds over the course of a night. Bottin's work as one-half of experimental synth outfit Deardrums rubs off on "Microdisco" which is fat with pulsating analogue synths and resonant beat experimentations. One thing that sets I Have What I Gave apart from his pioneering horror disco and much-loved Punica Fides LPs is that this time around Bottin didn't see to it to create a concept-album structure. Everything came at once during the writing and recording process, which no doubt gives the album its intensity and sense of immediacy.

BARERA & WILL MARTIN, JOHN Proceed To The Root CD
2017 release. John Barera and Will Martin Proceed To The Root of their sound on their second album and strongest work to date. A tough collection of techno and house styles collide with soulful electronics and touches of dub and jungle for an album of finely crafted, sculptural, storytelling, and no-nonsense club music. John Barera and Will Martin's musical partnership grew out of a close friendship. Their chemistry with production and DJ'ing has been honed through many years of working, and sometimes living, together. Both have a wide-ranging appreciation for all kinds of music, filtered through a love for house and techno which brings them together. The recording process for Proceed To The Root started almost immediately after their first album Graceless came out (2014). That was when they wrote the track "Golden Hour". There was a lot of momentum after the release of the debut album and buoyed by its reception, they knew they wanted to do another album together and started writing for the next one right away. Although they've released a couple EPs since the album, all of those records had been recorded before it came out. So Proceed To The Root is really the beginning of the next chapter for them and their music. There was a lot of transition in their lives going on during the writing of the record: chiefly being Martin moved to New York and got married, so they weren't just writing music casually after work together anymore, and they were never going to be roommates again. Each session was very deliberate, or was happening where they could fit it in. This included doing edits at Gatwick airport, writing synth pads on a night train to Germany and spending a blackout day in Berlin producing by candlelight. Thus, each track on Proceed To The Root was born under a different sign, bottling moments across the course of many years and settings, yet the pair manage to combine it all into a cohesive whole.

GEL SET Body Copy CD
2017 release. Laura Callier came across the phrase Body Copy while using some now forgotten freeware at a now forgotten job that didn't want to pay for the name brand goods -- body copy, as in -- the text to be entered into the body of a document. "What is the content of your body's copy?" she asks you to ask yourself. Then, she moved from Chicago to Los Angeles, a bit on a whim, a bit to escape winter, a bit to pursue sound design and post production. She would go out, and search for familiar faces at shows, in stores, on sidewalks. It's an overpopulated city, but it's a lonely city. Strangers everywhere looked slightly familiar, like if you took the face of a loved one and popped it in the microwave for ten seconds. The world is full of Body Copies, and the nerds haven't even perfected replicants yet. Gel Set is the art that Callier makes in her noisy bedroom, currently in Koreatown. She sold most of her gear before moving to LA, but on this album, in varying amounts, she used a Tempest, a Monomachine, an Evolver, a Mopho, a Yamaha RX5, Arturia soft synths, Ableton, a TR-8, a Nord Rack, and a Virus A. Maybe some other things? She also says she got a bunch of film samples/sound effects from an unpaid job she did in LA that she used as much as possible on this album to justify her excessive free labor. By got, she possibly means stole? Stealing is wrong, she says, but so is the exploitation inherent in some unpaid industry jobs. "Just sayin," she mutters, and changes the subject. When asked her influences, she says "I like crunchy, hard electronic music that sounds like it was made by someone who is growing mushrooms on their person," whatever that means, and she says she loves the raw emotion of Karen Dalton, the abstract story-telling and dissonance of late Scott Walker, the synthesis of Mort Garson and Tangerine Dream, the heavy sounds of Hogg, and she's ever flattered by comparisons to Chris and Cosey. She says she also loves music with a pop sensibility, from Erasure to Jesse Lanza. She's a multimedia artist who plays in several bands besides Gel Set (her solo project): Simulation, dreamy psychedelic electronic duo with Whitney Johnson (Matchess, E+, Verma); Athleisure, duo with video artist Jason Ogawa (Tarnation); God Vol 1, duo with visual artist Nicole Ginelli.

WARE, LEON Rainbow Deux 2LP
The melodically adventurous soul of Leon Ware continues its expression in his final opus Rainbow Deux. The album features new songs recorded and performed by Leon before his health turned, leading to his transition on February 23rd, 2017. Co-produced by Taylor Graves, it has stellar musical contributions from the likes of Kamasi Washington, Thundercat, Ronald Bruner Jr, Rob Bacon, and Wayne Linsey. Because Leon was always writing, it's impossible to pinpoint any single moment of Rainbow Deux's genesis. Six of the songs go back to 2012/2013 and were released in 2014 as part of Sigh, a Japan-only CD collection heavy with Rob Bacon's tasteful licks and Wayne Linsey's piano vibes. The rest of the material comes from Leon's sessions with Taylor. The album was finished-up around August of 2016 in a back-and-forth between Leon and his go-to mastering engineer Toni Economides in the UK. Leon worked on Rainbow Deux with life's greatest challenge looming over him, yet it is one of his most focused and cohesive solo offerings since the 1980s. The entire record is a vibe: mellow, deep, and smooth as silk. The lyrical themes are eternal, and the music is elegant, soulful, and sensual. The hypnotic throb of "For The Rainbow" opens, coming on like a percussive, slow-mo house shuffle. The exotic "Let Love In" follows with its gradual-build island funk, intricate guitar picks, and sassy female vocals. "Sigh" is a stylish slow jam with serene guitars and polished drums. The easy-burning broken-beauty "The Darkest Night" is the centerpiece of the album with Kamasi Washington's lurking sax, Thundercat's signature creeping bass, and Leon's perfect, seductive sax-soul vocals. "Surrender Now" conjures waves of vocals to swell and wash over the glossy piano, subtly bumping hip-hop drums, and bubbling synth-bass stabs. "Summer Is Her Name" has Kamasi's effortless, melancholic sunshine sax give way to rising tempos and propulsive rhythms. "Are You Ready" sees a nimble groove of piano and synth rolling around Theo Croker's sensual trumpet playing. With lush G-Funk sensibilities "Streets (Keep Me Runnin')" sounds like a lost Dam-Funk produced gem. "Samba Dreams" is the first of two tracks that bring a little Rio magic to Rainbow Deux. "Let's Go Deep" is a dreamy, between-the-sheets quiet storm anthem and a real showcase for Leon's vocals. The dripping, honeyed harp-funk of "We Should Be Laughin'" marks the star turn of the brilliant Kimbra. Warm synths radiate shuffling samba soul on "Wishful Thinking" as those Brazilian rhythms return to bring Rainbow Deux to a close. 140 gram vinyl; gatefold sleeve with printed inner sleeves.

PARTON & PORTER WAGONER, DOLLY Just Between You And Me 6CD BOX
"The greatest male-female duet in country music! 'They made all other duet teams sound like footnotes' (critic John Morthland). Includes 21 timeless hits: 'Holding On To Nothin'', 'Just Someone I Used To Know', 'Daddy Was An Old Time Preacher Man', and 'Making Plans', as well as the #1 smash 'Please Don't Stop Loving Me'! Also includes many rarities including their 1973 release of 'Here Comes The Freedom Train' and live recordings. In all, 160 recordings! Features an in-depth biography by noted journalist and Dolly Parton biographer, Alanna Nash. '... I was truly humbled by the high art and soul of duet singing and its power to tell the story of the human heart, broken and otherwise, but Porter and Dolly became the gold standard for me and remain so to this day. At a time when the airwaves and ipods spew out bloodless and over-calculated offerings of a once venerable genre, this is the real deal, my friends -- country music the way God intended. And if there is a radio station in heaven, Porter and Dolly will always be in heavy rotation.' --Emmylou Harris, Nashville, January 2014. Porter and Dolly had even more than the playfulness and sexual chemistry of Conway Twitty-Loretta Lynn and the high psychodrama of Tammy Wynette-George Jones. Because they were both great songwriters, they wrote songs that mirrored their lives and brought an uncommon variety to their music. Both of them dressed in high hillbilly glamor -- like no one else before or since. Neither of them was afraid to make a splash."

EASTMAN, JULIUS The N*gger Series 2LP
2019 repress. Very limited double-LP bundled version of the two individual LPs, 180 gram color vinyl. Includes printed inner, Nagaoka anti-static record sleeve, plus and Obi-style insert in a fold-out outer sleeve. Only a handful of years ago, the name Julius Eastman would have been met by a unanimous blank look. The legacy of this once-darling of the New York post-minimal avant-garde had, since his untimely death at the age of 49, in 1990, been almost entirely lost. Eastman's story is as fascinating as they come: black, angry, and queer in an all too polite, straight white musical world. A prodigy and genius whose music took him to astounding heights, whose unwillingness to conform and play by the rules took him down the path of drug abuse and homelessness, as well as the loss of his scores. Even before his death, he was already a forgotten name. Eastman belongs to a generation of composers who inherited the mantel left by minimalism, but despite being highly respected by his peers, he was given few chances to record his work, relegating most of his talent as a singer and pianist to the realization of others' work. It was Eastman who conducted the iconic recording of Arthur Russell's Tower of Meaning, and whose piano cuts its way across the 1976 recording of Morton Feldman's For Frank O'Hara. It's likely that Eastman's work would have been entirely lost, had it not been for rigorous efforts of a few close friends, the most persistent of whom was the composer, Mary Jane Leach, who spent years tracking down his lost scores. These efforts eventually led to the comprehensive CD collection, Unjust Malaise (2005). It was the beginning of a turning tide, and over the 13 years since, Eastman's singular voice has slowly returned to the audience he always deserved. It also represented the recorded debut of some his most thrilling and controversial work, three compositions for piano from what he called the N*gger Series: Gay Guerrilla, Evil N*gger, and Crazy N*gger. The three pieces are now issued across two LPs in their first-ever vinyl release with extensive liner notes by Leach and Bradford Bailey. These three seminal works by one of the most important, but neglected, American composers of the 1970s and '80s, return to the light once more. Not only are they an entire rethinking of musical minimalism, but they ferociously blow the doors off of what classical music can be. Mastered by Giuseppe Ielasi. All three compositions on these 2 LPs are for piano quartet: Performed by: Frank Ferko, Janet Kattas, Julius Eastman, Patricia Martin. Recorded 1979/80.

MUHLUM-PYRAPHEROS, WINFRIED Musica Nova Contemplativa LP
Blume present the first ever reissue of Winfried Mühlum-Pyrápheros's Musica Nova Contemplativa, originally released in 1970. This stunning artifact of its era has, until now, remained among the rarest artifacts in the field of cross-disciplinary efforts known as the Artist Record: sonic adventures embarked on by artists primarily dedicated to the visual realm. Creatively challenging, ahead of its time, and unquestionably beautiful, its rare musicality sets the stage for alternate understandings of what minimalism was and came from, during its early years. Droning and tense, subtle melodic elements underpin sheets of tone and atonality, sculpting an incongruous sense of spatial ambience; the concept of Musica Nova Contemplativa drew on a unique, unfixed compositional system created by combining traditional musical notation with mobile and variable elements, expressed graphically as a system of coordinates which leave variation, interpretation, and improvisation up to the performer. Captured as eleven distinct movements, the work, in hindsight, can now be understood as a lost, freestanding work of musical minimalism, echoing idiomatic roots in Fluxus and the raw temperaments of artists like Tony Conrad and Henry Flynt, threaded with touchstones in the work of Eliane Radigue, Giacinto Scelsi, and Jani Christou. Born in Germany during 1941 and educated in philosophy and psychology, over the last half century the bulk of Winfried Mühlum-Pyrápheros's artistic output has been largely oriented around painting, sculpture, and installation, each focused on the experiences of phenomena, environment, and light. Musica Nova Contemplativa was composed in 1964 as a graphic score, then it was interpreted and recorded by Mühlum-Pyrápheros on violin and Johann Georg Ickler on organ three years later in a Franciscan church in Bensheim as is a logical extension of the artists broader concerns: seeking further territories of inclusive and expansive environments of experience. Intended as acoustic extensions of his paintings, the collective contents of the album are a metaphysical and esoteric rising in sound. Out-of-print for almost 50 years, this edition represents its first ever reissue in any form, complete with an interview between Winfried Mühlum-Pyrápheros and Stefan Bremer conducted for the occasion of this reissue, and newly commissioned liner notes by Bradford Bailey. Includes printed inner sleeve and an original insert that functions as obi; Edition of 300.

KLEIN, MICHAEL Yuzu 12"
Frankfurt's Michael Klein offers two tracks for Cocoon. Clouds gather on "Yuzu" -- a full-on dose of headstrong, slamming techno. Rampant hi-hats, a rasping bass, and a frenzied acid riff conjure up a deliberately disorientating electric storm that takes a certain amount of pleasure in battering the dance floor like a force ten gale. Klein adds some extra bounce to the raw, pounding beats on "Eureka", creating a cavernous backdrop that transports you back to the heyday of E-Werk. Then, it's all aboard the night train as the sounds gradually morph into some kind of demonic locomotive.

Égrégore is a ritual collaboration between B.S.s. (Common Eider, King Eider, Badgerlore, Six Organs Of Admittance collaborator) and Arexis (La Breiche, Coume Ouarnede, Stille Volk, Ihan) and all of the spirits of the Pyrenees present during those Dark Moon Rituals, wishing to speak. Born under May's New Dark Moon in 2018, born in secrecy, in darkness, in ritual. Born in a tiny cabin in the Pyrenees of France... Born in humbleness... in friendship. Born to offer voice to the stones and waters and stars and all the spirits of that land. Born to summon... Born to give thanks. Rituals documented late into the night and early morning hours. Black moon... Black Mother... Voices captured whispering, wailing, lashing out. Rocks ground together, bundles of branches channeling voices hanging in the air, wishing to be heard, but spoken with a foreign tongue. Bells ring to both banish and invoke. Antlers scratching... mapping a direction... drawing digits. Voices speaking of loss, of longing... of hope, of despair. Voices singing of the broken relationship with the land and spirits. Voices screaming for repair and reciprocity. Recorded live using electronics, rocks, antler, branches, and voice. Four offerings given as gifts to the black air... the burnt soil... Gifts to the Spirits living in those forests and mountains of the Pyrenees. Dark moon folk magic... Housed in a beautiful matte-laminate gatefold eco-pak, with visuals prepared by Kevin Gan Yuen (Sutekh Hexen).

ANDERSEN WITH LARS VON TRIER, KRISTIAN EIDNES Antichrist LP
Cold Spring Records announce the first ever official physical release of the soundtrack to Lars Von Trier's controversial film Antichrist, originally released in 2009. Ten years after the film's initial release, the extreme, provocative performances from Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg in Antichrist still have the power to shock, repulse, and divide. The sound design by Kristian Eidnes Andersen with Lars Von Trier was composed using only natural sounds and samples (including internal body recordings). Each element was recorded specifically for the film and overseen by Von Trier, including a brand new, somber performance of Händel's "Lascia Ch'io Pianga", recorded in Kastelskirken church in Copenhagen, 2009. Pressed onto heavyweight 180 gram vinyl with an etched B-side; housed in a heavy 350gsm full-color sleeve featuring the original theatrical release artwork, approved by the director.Award-winning Danish composer Kristian Eidnes Andersen has produced music and sound design for films, television, and documentaries for 30 years, notably working with Lars Von Trier on the films Antichrist, The House That Jack Built (2018), Dancer In The Dark (2000), Melancholia (2011), and Nymphomaniac (Vol I & II) (2013).

LP version. 180 gram vinyl; printed inner sleeve. Trepaneringsritualen return to Cold Spring Records with an album-long ritual working entitled ?? - Algir; eller Algir i Merkstave. This record -- constructed from a series of rituals designated to guide the last ceasing of ???? ? ? ? ? ? - T × R × P -- is manifest in its most obscure form. Sonically minimal yet devastating in emotional impact, this working lets the listener grasp the last vestiges of Nifl and Múspell, and with them as weapon and beacon traverse the Night. ?? reveals a barren landscape where crooked paths lead onward, through soot black veils to a point of radiant light where all that is Union & Dissolution. Dedicated to our sister, ???? ? ? ? ? ?. T × R × P channeled through the forms of ??? ???, ??? ???, and ???? ? ? ? ? ? at the 63rd Link, 4 & Rising, and Zone Rouge December 2017 e.v. - July 2018 e.v. GEESIN, RON ExpoZoom CD
Ron Geesin on ExpoZoom: "In 1969, I was commissioned to make all the music and organized noises for nineteen looped films to be run in the British Pavilion at Expo 70 in Osaka, Japan. The overall concept was to have all the films running in fixed positions so that the individual visitors would 'mix' their audio and visual experience by the speed and direction of their movement through and around the environment. Since most of the ninety-second films focused on highly technical aspects of British industry, it was decided with the producer, James Archibald and Associates, that we should do the final sound mixes with the finished films in the dubbing studio from as many ingredients as I thought necessary for each film. So I made all those textures separately, but was never provided with the finished mixes. Recently, I pulled out the five 10.5" spools of tape from my archive and ran them. Firstly, after nearly fifty years, the physical tapes were in good condition being formulated from stable chemicals before the horrible 'sticky tape syndrome' of the 1980s. Secondly, having not revisited any of this material after 1973, I noticed that there were many prototypes of ideas made with much tape editing and analog synthesizers that only emerged from me in the pieces for KPM Electrosound and later in the 1970s, so there was a certain energetic outpouring of crude vitality from these earlier works. After all those years, I had little idea of how the original film tracks were mixed, so I transferred all those initial ingredients to my preferred digital setup and made new pieces, keeping each group of modules under its original title where known. In a few cases I added or strengthened a melodic line and, where pure electronic tones were made on tape with inevitable dropouts, remade the tones digitally. The pieces, influenced by the original pavilion layout, then suggested to me that they be grouped in four movements. One piece, 'Wool', is left out because it was lifted as 'Twist And Knit For Two Guitars' for my As He Stands (1973) album. Maybe if this lowly composer had been allowed to go to Japan, to join and probably embarrass the gray-suited British Government officials, he would have remembered more about the final structure of the films - and maybe just as well he wasn't, and therefore didn't." Recorded, composed, and mixed by Ron Geesin.

COLTRANE, JOHN The Best Of John Coltrane 2CD
John Coltrane was one of the most influential musicians of the twentieth century. His early recordings capture a musician in the relatively conventional confines of bebop and hardbop, but his enduring legacy primarily rests on the modal jazz pioneered by his classic quartet and by free jazz explorations late in his career. Starting out as alto saxophonist, he played since the early 1950s tenor saxophone and from 1960 onward as well the soprano saxophone.

EXEK Some Beautiful Species Left LP
"From Melbourne Australia, EXEK are proud to unveil their third album, Some Beautiful Species Left. Like their previous releases, Some Beautiful Species Left is the cultivation of numerous edits and overdubs, where once again EXEK subscribe to Brian Eno's philosophy of the studio as an instrument. This MO allows the songwriting process to develop simultaneously alongside the recording process whilst privileging greater sonic control. The result is a record difficult to pigeonhole but post punk is perhaps the easiest way to categories EXEK's music -- post-modern and containing the defiance inherent within punk whilst incorporating elements of dub production, classical arrangements, hip hop and krautrock rhythms and the use of kitchen appliances as instruments."

SPF Paul's McCartney LP
"Recorded in Oakland and San Francisco last year, SPF is Adam Keith (Cube, Mansion) Will Isengole, and Dave Easlick (Jackie O Motherfucker). There is something both listless and challenging about Paul's McCartney, something of our time, and something that, in that respect, demands to be taken seriously, and made sense of. The music which follows is capricious but interesting, its themes transitory, and its coherence provided primarily by the percussion. Nevertheless, its melodies, when they appear, are disarming and lovely. In only the first few minutes of the recording I hear: a siren, a jammed printer, church bells, the beeping of an heart rate monitor (a profoundly sad sound, if one is in possession of the right experiences), and finally what sounds to me like an homage to the tension producing minor key synth sounds that constituted a certain staple of horror film scores in the 1980s. Excepting the last as nominally musical, there is a tendency here to aestheticize the non-musical. This is not unique to the present case, of course. For some genres, e.g. industrial, it is the very reason for being. However, in that case the transfiguration of non-musical elements into musical ones is obvious; in this case, the process is less complete, and so, it seems to me, the final product more obscure."

ALEXANDER, ROSS Memorias Vol. 2 - High Atlas To The Sahara Desert LP
Ross Alexander first came to our attention with Memorias Vol. 1 - Bugandan Sacred Places (SUC 007CS), released back in 2017 on Sucata Tapes. The release featured a mind-altering mix of recorded sounds from a series of visited sites considered sacred within the Bugandan Kingdom and session recordings with Ugandan musicians Albert Sempeke and the Nilotika Collective layered with his own original composition using the Yamaha DX7 and programmed FM synthesis. The result was a unique reconfiguration of new age vocabulary with East African traditional sensibilities. The tape quickly sold out and the new Volume Of Memorias presented here arrives now on the mother label Discrepant, comes on vinyl with an expanded sound palette appropriate to the format. Memorias Vol. 2 - High Atlas To The Sahara Desert is the logical progression of Volume 1; based on a series of field recordings Alexander made during a trip through the High Atlas Mountains and into the Sahara Desert in 2018. The aim of the trip was to visit a gathering of nomadic musicians at an oasis close to the Algerian border. Like Memorias Vol. 1, the recordings made on the trip were then later processed, layered, and arranged with original compositions. Where Vol. 1 had clear nods to new age music, this volume explores the more ambient side of '80s industrial sound. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker.

VA You Can't Wine / Music Alone Shall Live (Expanded Edition) 2CD
"Among those at the vanguard of the reggae explosion that took the music world by storm in the late Sixties and early Seventies was performer-turned producer, Rupie Edwards. Having launched the aptly named Success Records in 1968, his productions regularly graced the local charts, with the popularity of his work prompting Britain's leading reggae company, Trojan Records to gather a dozen of his best-known productions on the now extremely collectable 1970 LP, You Can't Wine. Soon after, the London-based operation scheduled a follow-up compilation, Music Alone Shall Live, but for reasons now lost in the mists of time, the album failed to receive an official UK release, only seeing issue in limited numbers in Jamaica. Now, after almost half a century, both of these insanely rare and collectable long-players finally receive their long overdue re-release, with their contents further bolstered by the very best of Rupie Edwards' remaining output from the period."

BROWN & THE SUPERSONICS, ERROL The Treasure Dub Albums Collection (Expanded Edition) 2CD
"From the 1950s, when his sound system ruled Kingston's dancehalls, through to his untimely passing early in 1975, Arthur 'Duke' Reid remained a giant of the Jamaican music industry, playing, promoting and producing some of the most important and influential recordings ever to see issue on the island. Such was the quality of his work that long after his old friend, Sonia Pottinger had acquired his Treasure Isle studio and catalogue, demand for his productions persisted, prompting the regular reissue of his hits, be they in original form, as remixes, DJ cuts or dub versions. Fortunately, in Errol Brown, Pottinger had in her employ one of Jamaica's foremost sound engineers, whose talents at the mixing desk ensured the high quality of any reinterpretations of Reid's work, as evidenced by a trio of dub albums he oversaw in the mid-Seventies. These three seminal long-players provide the focus for this essential 2CD set, with disc one comprising both volumes of Treasure Dub and disc two featuring Pleasure Dub along with a host of rare and previously unissued bonus dub cuts from the period. The result is arguably the finest collection of classic dub music for decades!"

"Track 6" has a sinister bassline and mind-obliterating stabs -- 1993 to eternity. Andy Rantzen's "Harmonic Eye" speaks a similar vocabulary. Running parallel to FSOM in Sydney, Rantzen united the masses with Paul Mac as Itch-E + Scratch-E, producing crystalline rave, cheeky breakbeat and techno resistance. AZYMUTH Light As A Feather LP
Far Out Recordings present a reissue of Azymuth's Light As A Feather, originally released in in 1979. Azymuth's career-defining LP Light As A Feather returns. Home to their worldwide disco/fusion hit single "Jazz Carnival", the samba-doido staple "Partido Alto", and the proto-deep house masterpiece "Avenida Das Mangueiras", this album typifies the trio's tireless innovation in the fields of jazz, funk, samba, and cosmic music perhaps more so than any of their other ground-breaking records from its era. Their first release on Milestone Records in 1979, it quickly became one of the best-selling LPs of the year, staying in the UK Top 20 for eight straight weeks with more than half a million copies sold. An incredibly well thought out album both in pace, song selection, and musicality, Light As A Feather marked a maturing of the band as they began to rightfully utilize the studio as an instrument itself, embracing numerous mixing, and recording techniques not yet common for the time, as well as pioneering the use of the Big Muff and Dolby System to great effect. The result is an album that endures to this day as a samba/jazz-funk masterpiece. First reissued in 2012, the Far Out Recordings edition of this seminal recording was remixed and re-mastered from the original 16-track tapes, which were given to Joe Davis by Azymuth. This latest version is the first ever issue to be complete with a download card that that gives access to previously unreleased tracks, including the incredible full-length version of "Jazz Carnival", Credits: José Roberto Bertrami - keyboards including Fender Rhodes, Arp 2600, Hammond B3 Organ, Mini Moog, Arp Omni, Vocoder, Oberheim 8 voice, vocals, percussion; Alex Malheiros - bass, guitar, vocals; Ivan "Mamaõ" Conti - drums, ARP 2600; Aleuda - percussion. 180 gram vinyl; Includes download card which includes remixes from house stalwarts Theo Parrish, Ashley Beedle, and Mark E.

MAZZOTTI, ANA Ninguem Vai Me Segurar CD
Far Out Recordings present an official reissue of Ana Mazzotti's Ninguem Vai Me Segurar. originally released in 1974. An artist as imaginative and unique as Ana Mazzotti doesn't come around often. Dubbed a "super-musician" by fellow Brazilian virtuoso Hermeto Pascoal, Mazzotti's short but rich musical career culminated in just two studio albums: Ninguem Vai Me Segurar (1974), and Ana Mazzotti (1977). Outside circles of Brazilian funk aficionados, these two gems of spellbinding samba-jazz, lysergic funk and trippy bossa have remained relatively obscure. This was partly as a result of Mazzotti's premature death (she lost her battle with cancer in her mid-thirties), but also due to financial restraints and the prejudice she faced as a female songwriter in a fundamentally sexist society. Born in Caixas, in Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul municipality, Mazzotti began to play the accordion aged five, before moving with prodigious ease onto the piano. By the age of twelve she was already conducting her convent school's choir, and at twenty-one she led her city's premier chorus, the Coral Bento Goncalves. When rock n' roll hit South America in the '60s, a young Mazzotti was one of the early adopters, fronting various guitar groups including an all-female Beatles cover band, and an eclectic, eight-piece psychedelic group Desenvolvemento. Before moving to Sao Paulo to start her career proper, Mazzotti met drummer, producer, and fellow music educator Romido Santos, who she would later marry. Romildo introduced Mazzotti to jazz, and music by the likes of Chick Corea and Hermeto Pascoal who she would later befriend and perform with. In 1974, Mazzotti recorded her first album Ninguem Vai Me Segurar, enlisting the in-demand arrangement talents of Azymuth's original keyboard maestro Jose Roberto Bertrami. It also features Azymuth's bassist Alex Malheiros and percussionist Ariovaldo Contestini, with Romildo Santos who produced the album on drums. Recorded in Estudio Haway around the same time Azymuth recorded their debut album there, it's no wonder the samba jazz-funk pioneer's distinctive aesthetic is present throughout, and Mazzotti's sensational compositions are made even more beautiful for it. Kicking off with the swirling samba-jazz-dance masterpiece "Agora Ou Nunca Mais", the album hosts several groove-heavy Brazilian cult-classics. Deeper moments come in the form of the alluring future soul synth sounds on "Bairro Negro" and "Sou", and Mazzotti's tender, hallucinatory version of "Feel Like Making Love" (made famous by Roberta Flack). Remastered.

Romildo introduced Mazzotti to jazz, and music by the likes of Chick Corea and Hermeto Pascoal who she would later befriend and perform with. In 1977, Mazzotti took her debut album back to the studio, releasing the album with a new running order and new ethereal cover art, ostensibly another crack at commercial success following the small scale of the independently funded first release. With intimately re-recorded vocals, and the bonus of gorgeous horn arrangements and a new track: the carnivalesque "Eta, Samba Bom", replacing Roberta Flack's hit "Feel Like Making Love", Ana Mazzotti (1977) delivers Mazzotti's refreshingly cool musical style even more effortlessly, while retaining the all magical energy of her debut. COLLETTE/JAMES RUSHFORD/JOE TALIA, NED Afternoon-Dusk LP
"Ned Collette's last album, the 2LP set Old Chestnut (FTR 362-2LP), was hailed as a masterpiece by 'most everyone who heard it. Part of this was due to the darkly delicate lyrics and vocals of Ned himself (akin to the work of Graeme Jefferies, ca. This Kind of Punishment), but much was also due to the elegant lyricism of the music, which had a fantastic prog/folk heft as impossible to peg as it was to ignore. With this new LP, Collette (an Australian ex-pat, now based in Berlin) goes all-instrumental, along with his long-time drumming partner, Joe Talia (fellow ex-pat, now in Tokyo), and composer James Rushford (also from Australia) on viola. The two, side-long tracks are a departure from the pop formatting of Old Chestnut, but an expansion of that album's instrumental passages, playing with a syncretic fusion of several genres, while remaining beholden to none. Talia -- who has been working with Collette for over a decade, but is perhaps best known in the U.S. as Jim O'Rourke's drummer of choice -- uses synths and tapes, apart from his deft touch with the tubs. Rushford's work on viola is as idiosyncratic as you'd expect, given the evidence of his recordings with Ora Clementi, Food Court, and others. Rushford does opt for more standard tactics in spots, but his approach to long tones is not always clearly wrought by human hands. Collette's playing on guitar, synth, bells and drum machine combines a clear affinity with the trope of both 'new music,' and also with the artfully wrought dream-hybrids of Old Chestnut's musical textures. This means that while the music on Afternoon-Dusk may not be as immediately engaging, it also scratches some of the same itches as Old Chestnut and will definitely reward listeners who spend time with its soaring sonic inventions. The aspirations of Afternoon-Dusk are monumental, neo-symphonic and spectacularly successful. You have been warned!" --Byron Coley, 2019 Edition of 300.

Wrapped up in a cover by the praised Israeli artist David Tartakover, the songs in this album are meant to be short and ticklish just like a father's bristles. Because Father's milk is the essence of male gentleness. It is romantic, optimistic, nostalgic, and naive. It's childhood. It's longing. It's longing for childhood. CYPRESS HILL Cypress Hill LP
2019 repress. "Cypress Hill's self-titled debut album was hard as nails, with very few pop concessions. There was humor, but it was laced by cackling, homicidal sneering. Not well known outside of the hardcore hip-hop scene at first, faces of the three group members weren't usually shown clearly in press photos; they preferred the shadows. As their first singles began hitting the airwaves and record racks, the press and music fans started to take notice. From the opening notes of the group's first single, 'The Phuncky Feel One,' to deeper album cuts like 'Stoned Is The Way Of The Walk' and 'Tres Equis,' it was clear that Cypress Hill was something different. And very, very dope. The world Cypress Hill espoused was gang-ridden and far from cheery, but they managed to laugh through the pain. Lead rapper B-Real took each fuzzed-out, rock-hard DJ Muggs beat as a challenge, jumping around it like a spark off a joint as it makes its way to the concrete. MC Sen Dog always had B-Real's back, to bring intensity and a no-bullshit gruffness that made the group both menacing and unpredictable. When they introduced percussionist Eric Bobo to the mix in the early 90s, it brought new dimension to the band, making their live performances one of the most unique and accomplished shows in hip-hop. Journalist and author Chris Faraone highlights the group's relationship in the reissue's liner notes (which is included only in limited edition Skull) saying, '[By the late '80s] the undisputed Cypress unit finally formed. B and Sen realized that their diametric styles - the latter's deep wrangle, the former's inimitable high notes - complemented one another righteously. By then Muggs had bangers in the bag, as well as industry experience from a jaunt with the New York duo 7A3. B and Sen waited while Muggs messed with 7A3, and in that time began to build the blueprint for their raucous and weeded no-holds-barred style. Besides getting schooled on industry pitfalls, Muggs had also grown into hip-hop's most formidable young producer, while straddling the bi-coastal gap.' Cypress Hill's debut went gold by the end of 1991 and has since pushed past double platinum status, making it the first album for a Latino-American hip hop group to do so. The album received raves from the likes of Rolling Stone and the Los Angeles Times, saw a #1 Hot Rap Single with the release of 'The Phuncky One' and helped the band win Artist Of The Year at the 1992 Source Awards. After 25 years, it should come as no surprise that Cypress Hill is a cornerstone of the group's live set to this day."

PABLO & KING TUBBY, AUGUSTUS The Messenger CD
"Both are legends because both innovate -- and activate and motivate. King Tubby (Osbourne Ruddock) arrived on earth in 1941. As a teenager he repaired radios before moving onto repair sound system speakers. Since the mid-50s, sound systems had conquered Jamaica, replacing live bands as the people's favoured choice of access to their music. Tubby (a very slim man) found himself much in demand. In 1968, Tubby opened his own shop, Tubby's Home Town Hi Fi. That led him into the world of sound, led him into recording studios where first he remixed. But then he got bored and in doing so released himself by devising his own amazing aural vision. Tubby invented dub and he did so by experimenting, by creating a unique template where he stripped away certain parts of the record, replaced them with another, highlighted some instruments, dropped others, and on top of this used all kinds of studio effects. And thus King Tubby became King of Dub. In 1971, inevitably, he opened his own studio -- and he took the music deeper. Many musicians loved his set up, including Augustus Pablo. Pablo (Horace Swaby) arrived on earth in 1954. He hit the musical scene playing... the melodica. No one had thought to do so previously. Again, the breaking of new ground was heard in Jamaica. The instrument was perfect for the King Tubby vision, Pablo's playing producing a sound that was melodic, harsh, edgy, and soulful. Over Tubby's shuffling rhythms and maelstrom of sound, Pablo improvises with huge imagination and skill. His major hit East Of the River Nile suggested and put forward a sound derived from the Far East and he was up and running. In 1975, he began a fruitful collaboration with King Tubby. Their first album together Ital Dub is a classic. The later King Tubby Meets The Rockers Uptown is more than that, it is legendary. And now The Messenger is upon us, an album cut at some point in the 70s and which remained in the vaults. Should it have stayed there? No way. This is music that upholds the very high stars of their past, music which fires itself on imagination and strength, a collusion and collaboration of immense proportions, music that provides and creates moods with such purpose and drive. Pablo's melodica is centre stage but is counterpointed by contagious rhythms and touches of inspiration as horns and bass lines mesh in and out of view, held down by an ever-steady barrage of sturdy drums and bass and a never ceasing source of imaginative and delightful sounds. The sound constantly changes and because it does the album contains a staggering array of moods, from upbeat into deep waters. The Messenger is forward music, still sounding as fresh as it did on the day of its conception. And it will do so for time eternal." --Paolo Hewitt London 2019.

MANUEL, JOSE Magic Carpet: Contemporary Music 1982-1994 2LP
Magic Carpet is the first compilation of the German label Harmonie Exotic. Jose Manuel selected 12 experimental ambient tracks from 1982 to 1994. They are combined by the same feature, namely the magic and mysterious character. Even though all the (remastered) tracks released in different countries, such as Japan, Italy, and France, they are all combined in being rare and obscure songs. In most of them it is possible to verify the oneiric melodies mixed with the different drum machines, typical of that year. For this reason, they show how the magic has been developed over the chosen years, as they were all enveloped from the same carpet. Starting from this idea the compilation's title plays an important role in anticipating the dreamlike listening experience. Features D-Day, Roots, Vangelis Katsoulis, Mauro Sabbione & Maria Cinzia Bauci, Human Software, Raphael Toine, International Noise Orchestra, Meo, Manuel Wandji, Astral Dance, Individual Sensitivity, and Büdi Und Gumbls. Double-LP comes in a gatefold sleeve.

ECSTATIC VISION For The Masses CD
Philadelphia heavy psych quartet Ecstatic Vision (regarded as the second coming of vintage Hawkwind) return with For the Masses. After bursting onto the scene with their 2015 tribal-psychedelic LP, Sonic Praise (HPS 110LP/LTD-LP), touring the USA with Yob and Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats, crushing Roadburn, then quickly releasing a for-heads-only, noisy, psychedelic-garage record to weed out the weak (Raw Rock Fury, 2017), Ecstatic Vision have pulled themselves out of the muck to deliver their finest album to date. Recorded in Philadelphia at Retro City Studios with Joe Boldizar and mixed/mastered by Tim Green (Earthless, The Melvins) at Louder Studios in Grass Valley, CA, Ecstatic Vision's recent fuzzed-out sound has been sculpted it into a hi/fi psychedelic wonderland. This album is the closest the band has gotten to achieving the energy of their untouchable live shows on tape. EV took a simpler approach on the art this time, using the Spanish dream-team of Edko Fuzz and Bangalore Studios. For The Masses blends tripped-out synth, semi-catatonic desert driving tunes, Afro-tribal funkadelic bibes, troglodyte-Detroit rock grooves, acid freak-outs, ethereal psychedelic hymns, and mind-altering krautrock into Ecstatic Vision's outsider take on modern music. It's like if Tangerine Dream jammed with Lemmy and the Asheton Brothers and decided to play some world music and free jazz in 1971.

SHASTA CULTS Configurations CD
Shasta Cults' Important Records debut is not to be missed. A self-titled Shasta Cults will be available later this year, also on Important Records. A ship sinks beneath the silver mirror of the sea-top, temple gongs ring through an empty valley, industrial machinery sputters, heaves, lurches forward, stops, falls apart... These sound events may be the most acute musical referents of Shasta Cults, the music project of Canadian synthesizer technician Richard Smith. Using obsolete electronics, Shasta Cults pursues the true sound of the instrument, freed from the tyranny of emulation, no strings/woodwinds/piano presets. Shasta Cults' compositions seek out unchartered territories where sustained drones may swell, build, or evaporate; where timbres collide, amplitudes fluctuate, sounds emerge, raw, primeval, new hybrids form from the collisions of electricity and frequency. There may be stretches of silence punctuated by bell-ish tones from futures unheard; a sequence of notes may verge upon melody before mutating into ugly moans, the sonic equivalent of funhouse mirrors. But the end result is far more than chance operation, sporadic sound fields, or indeterminate academic exercise. Instead, Shasta Cults brings you back to nature, back to the possibilities inherent in nature, to the truth of evolution, stitching both musical tones, and the sounds of 21st century living into a form which is as real, as imponderable, and as ungovernable as our own memories. Recorded in 2017, employing the processes of non-linear wave shaping, frequency modulation, and feedback, Configurations consists of eight programs captured live to multi-track using a rare, fully functional Buchla 700 digital-hybrid instrument designed in the late 1980s. Whereas previously released works made with the 700 almost always consist in simple manipulations of the single factory preset, this album delves deep into the instrument's rich sonic vocabulary to offer the listener a more elaborate demonstration of the system's capabilities. Presented here in limited quantities this release is intended as a high-fidelity audio archive of this obscure musical artifact. RIYL: Eleh, Sarah Davachi.

Double-LP version comes in a gatefold; 180 gram vinyl; Includes download card.Nat Birchall on the project: "When Jazzman Gerald first mentioned to me the idea of doing an album as a tribute to the jazz giant Dr Yusef A. Lateef, my first thought was 'Where on earth do I start?' Lateef was such a colossus of music, and his scope so broad, that I couldn't hope to begin to cover his musical universe. He was a master of the tenor saxophone, a master of the flute, a master ballad player, a master blues player. Not to mention his skills as a composer and arranger and of course his exploration and use of musical methodology and instruments from all over the world. I've always been a great admirer of Lateef, and the challenge was intriguing, so I decided to give it go. We interpreted some of his own compositions (Brother John, Morning and Ching Miau) as well as some compositions by others that he made his own by careful arrangement and interpretation ('Love Theme from Spartacus', 'Ringo Oiwake'). I also wrote some original songs that, while certainly not written in his style, might be said to fall into his very broad approach to music making. I also wanted to utilize as many different instruments as possible, something I hadn't explored too much until this album. So it was a nice opportunity to finally get around to playing some of the many small instruments I've collected over the years; the Turkish zurna, the mbira from Zimbabwe, the balaphon from Mali and the arghul from Egypt. We have also tried to use varied time signatures in the music, so we have songs in 3/4, 5/4 and 7/4 time, as well as the standard 4/4. Ultimately the best music tells a story to the listener and takes them to places they might not have imagined themselves. Yusef Lateef certainly did that, and as such was a master storyteller."

VA Sound System Rockers: Kingston Town 1969-1975 CD
2019 repress. The sound system has become part of today's musical/cultural heritage, playing the people's favorite hits or just as important, breaking some new tunes. But perhaps less known are the roots of the sound system, which began way back when... in Kingston... Around the late 1940s, the sound system began to overtake the big bands that usually played at the dances in Kingston. The American rhythm and blues records that were so popular at the time would find their way to Jamaica via the merchant sailors and migrant workers returning from their stints in America. For economic reasons alone it would pay to have a DJ on hand to play these hits rather than a ten-piece band that could eat and drink the promotor out of the house and on curried goat! The early sound systems were basic affairs built around a single record deck, a valve amp and a speaker. But by the 1950s they had grown to purpose-built speakers the size of wardrobes that could be heard blocks away. Record producer Bunny "Striker" Lee would remember the time "sound systems was like our radio station... not many people on the island would own a wireless, so it was the way for the people to hear their music." This selection of lovers, ballads, root's classics made the sound systems of Jamaica the place to be. So sit back and enjoy the ride... Sound System Rockers... one and all. Features Ken Booth, Horace Andy, Leroy Smart, Dennis Brown, Cornell Campbell, John Holt, Delroy Wilson, Gregory Isaacs, Johnny Clarke, Freddie McGregor, Linval Thompson, Barry Brown, and Pat Kelly. CD version includes three bonus tracks featuring Alton Ellis, Count Price Millar, and Owen Grey.

Back in the game, Fantastic Man returns to Kitjen with a powerful EP of mind-bending, acid workouts. Solar Surfing is a concise example of the Australian artist's panache for psychedelically inspired house music with two dance-floor heavy cuts preceding a contemplative, baseline driven slow jam. The hypnotic and fast paced title track locks in and moves ever forward, whilst "Native Power" features the classic sound of Fantastic Man's 303, coupled cleverly with the sound of an extraterrestrial bird-song. A drop-in tempo rounds off the release with "Avocado Conception", an expertly delivered exploration in slow, chugging nostalgia.

TRUPA TRUPA Of The Sun LP
"Almost every song on Of The Sun -- the magnetic fifth album from the Polish quartet Trupa Trupa -- lands like an anthem, with barbed hooks driven by an italicized rhythm section and a chimera of crisscrossing harmonies. Throughout its propulsive 12-song sequence, this is an album that never lets up. From the relentlessly pulsing 'Long Time Ago' to the deep glisten of 'Longing,' Of The Sun is an unbroken string of hits in Trupa Trupa's idiosyncratic, self-made universe. The setting of Gda?sk is a crucial philosophical and aesthetic touchstone for Trupa Trupa. A city with a convoluted history of German and Polish rule and self-sovereignty, it is itself a living testament to the turnover of human toil. Of The Sun is a portrait of great effort and pathetic failure, of strain sublimating into nothing. Along with the notions of Beckett, hints of Syd Barrett, and the knotty complications of Wire, these emotions ripple through Of The Sun, a radiant album about the damnation of mortality. Trupa Trupa has grown inordinately in both confidence and execution during the last half-decade. Spurred on by a democratic process, where no one is the real leader and all ideas and influences are funneled into the same rich sound, Trupa Trupa channel a multiverse of feelings into captivating four-minute spans. Throughout Of The Sun, they stare into the dark and summon a light of their own, making the struggle feel not just tolerable but deceptively triumphant. Of The Sun was recorded, produced and mixed by Michal Kupicz during October and November 2018 in Gda?sk, Poland at Custom 34 studios. Trupa Trupa is Grzegorz Kwiatkowski (vocal, guitar), Wojciech Juchniewicz (vocal, bass guitar, guitar), Rafa? Wojczal (second guitar, keys), and Tomasz Pawluczuk (drums)."

Swedish composer and multimedia artist Marcus Fjellström's debut Miasmah release followed two critically acclaimed, full-length albums on Lampse -- 2006's Gebrauchsmusik (LAMP 006CD) and 2005's Exercises In Estrangement (LAMP 002CD). In addition, Marcus has had several commissioned works requested, leading to him working with, among others, the Swedish Royal Ballet, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, numerous ensembles, soloists and filmmakers including Salad Fingers creator David Firth. Based in Berlin, Fjellström's compositions often combined aspects of modern classical composition and arrangement and more avant forms of music, be that acoustic or electronic. Schattenspieler (which translates as "Shadowplayer") takes the form of eleven compositions which explore ambience and melody, texture and silence. Haunting synth and orchestral instrument-based audio constructions, flowing from one moment to the next -- the fleeting ghosts of Fjellström's melodies rise, only to be buried under a claustrophobic clutter of percussion and creaking background noise. These pieces do indeed feel like you're listening to something more implied than obviously stated, as if Fjellström wanted only to expose us to the shadow of the music -- the implication being perhaps a more terrifying experience than to be confronted outright -- listen to Schattenspieler and you may find your mind starts to play tricks on you... The undeniably Angelo Badalamenti-esque descending synth strings of opening track "The Disjointed", lay the foundations for Fjellström's Schattenspieler album; music resting somewhere between the unsettling horror soundtracks of Jerry Goldsmith, the elevating melodies of Cliff Martinez, and the subtle audio constructions of Miasmah label mates, Kreng and Jacaszek. Marcus's wide-ranging abilities in composition and his willingness to let go of accepted form and function makes Schattenspieler a perfect choice of release for the Miasmah label. The suspense laden "Antichrist Architechture Management", with its harrowing and tense undertones, weaving synth lines and a wash of static hiss and flicker, is a particular standout track. Despite it's a strangely oppressive sound, shafts of light grace Schattenspieler; pieces such as "Untitled 090616" find gorgeous melodies are boxed in by unsettling arrangements and sparse background ambience. There is a coldness to many of these compositions -- not without emotion, but somehow remorseless. Schattenspieler is, for the main part, a defiantly bleak journey. Includes 12-inch, eight-page booklet with drawings by Marcus Fjellström. Purple vinyl; edition of 300.

FJELLSTROM, MARCUS Exercises In Estrangement LP
Miasmah present the first vinyl issue of Marcus Fjellström's first album Exercises In Estrangement, originally released in 2005. Listening back to it now only re-confirms the unique mind of the Swedish composer, who sadly died in September 2017, only 37 years old. Marcus was an avant-garde composer and audio/visual artist exploring the edges of classical music. The word "classical" here means nothing in the usual sense, as he would bend the rules to his liking -- and hence create a completely own sound that is hard to define. A student of the conservatory in Piteå, Sweden, Marcus's path was unlike most composers with similar backgrounds. His love for the bizarre and macabre would send him on a descent into the darkest corners of musical experimentation. A trajectory that resulted in some of the most peculiar and fascinating sound documents created in the last two decades. For his debut album, Marcus made a record that not only lives up to its name, but really is a profoundly mind-expanding listen that might sound even more intriguing today than back in 2005. Reflections on everything from spirituality, resurrection, and abstract art is being undertaken, all while adding a big dose of the absurd. As Tiny Mix Tapes wrote back in 2005: "Marcus Fjellström's Exercises In Estrangement is an unsettling, visionary work of modern composition that falls soundly within the idiom of contemporary electronic music yet evokes the darker aspects of the work of many of the more brooding mid- to late-twentieth century European classical composers."Includes 12-inch, eight-page booklet with drawings by Marcus Fjellström; edition of 300.Marcus worked with the Swedish Royal Ballet, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Sinfonietta Cracovia as well as numerous other orchestras, ensembles and soloists, artists and filmmakers. He spent the last half year of his life scoring the AMC series The Terror. In his works, Marcus often aimed to combine opposites so that they don't contradict each other, but rather fuse into a natural, third element -- "high" and "low" culture, the naïve and the sophisticated, good and bad taste. These are all elements that comfortably blend together in his works. Musical influences range from electronic acts such as Aphex Twin and Autechre to 20th century composers such as György Ligeti and John Cage. Further influences include impressionist composers Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy as well as film music composers Bernard Herrmann, Angelo Badalamenti, and Zden?k Liska.

FJELLSTROM, MARCUS Gebrauchsmusik LP
Miasmah present the first vinyl issue of Marcus Fjellström's second album Gebrauchsmusik, originally released in 2006. Gebrauchsmusik is a bizarre sound document that deserves a closer look. Listening back, it only re-confirms the unique mind of the Swedish composer, who sadly died in September 2017, only 37 years old. "Gebrauchsmusik" is German for "Utility Music", and his second excursion into post-classical experimentation is exactly that; thirteen tracks with each one written to suit a certain theme. War, art, festivity, sadness, death, and resurrection are all interpreted by Fjellström in his unique style, taking a classical framework and distorting, confusing, and manipulating them into far fetching scenarios that is only limited by one's own imagination. Includes 12-inch, eight-page booklet with drawings by Marcus Fjellström; edition of 300.Marcus worked with the Swedish Royal Ballet, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, and Sinfonietta Cracovia as well as numerous other orchestras, ensembles and soloists, artists, and filmmakers. After his last release got Aphex Twin's seal of approval, Holy Similaun debuts on OOH-Sounds with Hegenrax. BARKER Utility CD
"We all dance away our lives to the tune of the sovereign pleasure-pain axis." --David Pearce, The Hedonistic ImperativePleasure-seeking and pain-avoidance as a rave metaphor fits the music of Sam Barker. The Berghain resident and Leisure System co-founder has spent the last few years exploring the euphoric potential of altering key variables in dance music formulas. This was especially true on his 2018 Ostgut Ton debut EP Debiasing (OSTGUT 112EP), which was flush with unconventional rhythmic chord stabs, melody, and percussion but devoid of kickdrums. What seemed like an experimental exercise on paper was in reality equally geared towards the club: tracks that worked for the floor but resisted the genre categorizations that kick drums often provide. This has come to define Barker's sound. Now, on his debut solo album Utility, Barker turns his focus toward melding experimentation and dancefloor pragmatism with the psychology behind the musical decision-making process. In his own words: "After Debiasing it occurred to me that my musical decisions were often unintentionally utilitarian, following an instinct to maximize pleasure in one way or another. It's sort of unfashionable to admit, but by removing elements that have strong genre associations, this became a natural consequence." Accordingly, Utility is a playful but non-ironic musical approach to a whole spectrum of utilitarian and transhumanist ideas: from models for quantifying pleasure and "gradients of bliss" to abolishing suffering for sentient beings (not just people) through the ethical use of drugs and nanotechnology. Over nine tracks, Barker's vision ebbs-and-flows through waves of deeply psychedelic musical vignettes; free-floating and futuristic melodies and rhythms as targeted brain stimulation. The sound draws heavily on modular synthesis, as well as self-built mechanical instruments and plate reverbs to create atmospheres that are at once alien and emotionally recognizable, functional, and utopian. Utility is by no means a concept album. Instead, it is an honest take on music as both pleasure-maximizer and consciousness-expander.

"Goran Utan" has a deeper, darker edge, with a tension that will tighten the grip on many dancefloors. "Shakmat, But Happy" appears in "Pauli's Psychedelic Breakfast Take 9" and is a slow-building, loop-based groover, eventually opening up to reveal tinges of acid.

MULELID TRIO, KJETIL What You Thought Was Home CD
Eight new beguiling Kjetil Mulelid compositions expertly balancing energetic, often rhythmically complex and harmonically rich music with beautiful and evocative melodies. It's not all about Mulelid though, bassist Bjørn Marius Hegge (31) and drummer Andreas Skår Winther (28) effortlessly conjure additional layers, tones, and textures, incorporating a sense of calm; an unhurried yet constantly unfolding sound world which can be said to be distinctively Scandinavian, most typically heard in Hegge's sole composition "Bruremarsj (Wedding March)". Kjetil André Mulelid grew up in the small village of Hurdal, and started playing the piano when he was nine, after hearing Chopin on the stereo. In high school, he had the good fortune of studying with some inspiring piano teachers. Later he received a bachelor's degree in jazz performance at NTNU in Trondheim, again being blessed with top teachers, such as Erling Aksdal, Vigleik Storaas, and Espen Berg. He is also a member of jazz quartet Wako. Bjørn Marius Hegge has been making waves on the Norwegian jazz scene lately, with his quintet's debut album Hegge winning a Norwegian Grammy. He also has his own trio with pianist Oscar Grönberg and young drummer ace Hans Hulbækmo.

WE LIKE WE & JACOB KIRKEGAARD Time Is Local LP
Time is Local is a project by Danish collective We Like We and sound artist Jacob Kirkegaard built around a 12-hour live sound installation and performance at Thorvaldsen Museum in Copenhagen. The piece was initiated and performed by the artists during the G((o))ng Tomorrow Festival in 2017. As they slowly wandered the halls and rooms of the museum for a whole day, they performed extended sound compositions for a visiting audience at each of the 12 chambers for a longer session -- a haunting experience as the outside world disappeared and the focus was on quiet sonic moments unfolding in midst of the grand, reverberous space. For this album, they have collected 12 fragments revolving around the chambers in the museum. Each chamber is being represented by its own handful of tones, instruments, and voice. The statues within, depicted by neo-classicist sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen get their own soundtrack of quiet emanating gusts. Barely heard frequencies reflect through the walls. The marble carved busts of Greek gods that line the museum hallways gaze eternally with a blank stare as decades pass and new audience arrives. Although We Like We should need no introduction to followers of the Sonic Pieces label, the Danish all female sound quartet consists of Katrine Grarup Elbo (violin), Josefine Opsahl (cello), Sara Nigard Rosendal (percussion), and Katinka Fogh Vindelev (voice). Together they have forged a dynamic and intuitional sound beyond genres through the last decade. In 2017, they released the Nordic neo-classical opus Next To The Entire All (PATT 005LP). This time they emerge in collaboration with sound artist Jacob Kirkegaard. Jacob's works are sonic reflections on complex aspects of the human civilization, treating themes such as radioactivity, melting ice, border walls and tones emitted by the ears. Through the last decades he has released records and sound documents through labels such as Touch, Important Records, and more. As a document of their 12h performance, Time is Local is a beautiful sonic evocation that shines as a bright line of sun through the cracks of a tomb. Cover with laser-cutting and printed inner sleeve; Includes download code; Edition of 500.

SPACEMEN 3 Live in Europe 1989 CD
Recorded over four nights in Germany during what turned out to be Spacemen 3's final tour, Live in Europe 1989 is far better than the more ragged earlier Spacemen 3 live album, 1988's Performance. The album's also notable for documenting the group's short-lived quartet line-up, with bassist Willie Carruthers and drummer Jon Mattock. Despite the change in rhythm sections, the focus is, as always, on guitarists Pete Kember and Jason Pierce, who by this point in the group's career aren't even pretending to be interested in standard verse-chorus-verse structure. Rather surprisingly, only one of the 13 tracks; a 16-minute take on Playing With Fire's center-piece track "Suicide" breaks the ten-minute barrier that was so often smashed through on the group's studio recordings, but there's still an epic, expansive feel to these loose, perfectly ragged performances. Although newcomers are advised to start with 1988's Playing With Fire or 1990's Recurring (ORBIT 055CD), Live in Europe 1989 is essential for fans. Originally released in 1995. "Rollercoaster" was the opening song for most of 1989 after coming on stage to the sounds of "Ecstasy Symphony" (or on one occasion, "Mr. Spaceman" by The Byrds. "Bo Diddley Jam" is an instrumental jam occasionally included as part of the regular set. "2:35" was a regular part of the Spacemen set since the band's first recordings in 1984. The original lyrics for "Walkin' With Jesus" included the line "Listen Sweet Lord, forgive me my sins. Cause I can't stand this life without sweet heroin". Deleted for the studio recordings, Jason would occasionally sing them live as recorded here in 1989. Spacemen 3 only regularly performed "Suicide", "Revolution", and "How Does It Feel?" from Playing With Fire while ignoring other tracks. Every so often one of them would turn up like "I Believe It" and "Lord Can You Hear Me?" "Things'll Never Be The Same" was a part of the Spacemen 3 live set since 1984. Both "Revolution" and "Suicide" had been part of the band's live set for almost a year before the studio versions were officially released. This incendiary version comes from a 1989 show in which "Revolution" was often played twice. "Suicide" was typically the last song of the set and could last anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes. "Take Me To The Other Side" was one of the band's most intense workouts, always a strong crowd pleaser, and rarely out of the set

DWART Electricidade Estetica LP
Strangelove Music's latest release turns left somewhere near the edge of the Atlantic, with Electricidade Estética they document a vibrant window into the musical landscape of 1980s counter-culture Portugal. Compiling early un-issued works, DWART's organic Ash Ra Balearics meld with spikey Iberian electronics, coalescing around the floating beauty of "Mate", reissued for the first time on vinyl. With emergent music technologies of the era enthusiastically adopted by Lisbon's avant-garde, there was a collective desire by DWART and their contemporaries to push existing sonic boundaries; Post new wave sounds melded with distinctive local sensibilities. Antoñio and Manuela Duarte's search for an artistic language melded a continuing curiosity with aural and physical dualities: experimental pop integrated with performance art, mathematics sound-tracked on canvas, organic found sounds at ease alongside synthetic drum machines. The nine songs found here document the early emergence of their own Electricidade Estética . Vítor Rua and Jorge Lima Barreto of the legendary Telectu were regular collaborators while composer/guitarist Nuno Rebelo and guitarist/singer Bernardo Devlin feature throughout. COLLETTE SEPTET, BUDDY Polynesia LP
The rarest of all exotic LPs, like Eden Ahbez but with extra added death. This bizarre, rarely heard masterpiece brings together jazz, ancient manuscripts, and a convicted murderer... Issued originally in 1959 it originates from Phoenix, Arizona. The concept behind the recording was unusual -- to bring together two unconnected worlds: the jazz genius of Buddy Collette with the academic oriental studies and translations of A.I Groeg. Little can be found of A.I. Groeg, but before the LP was recorded A.I Groeg had translated several Polynesian and Japanese manuscripts. These form the basis of the dark narrations and lyrics across the album. Sublime vocalist Marni Nixon, the voice of Maria in West Side Story (1961), was brought in for two songs and fledgling actor Robert Sorrels (now a convicted murderer) supplied the strangely unsettling and almost otherworldly narration. The original LP states that "Buddy was given carte blanche with the material. After six months of composing and studying with the voice soloists, the results were two instrumentals and two songs on side one, and tone poems on side two. The latter represents a new musical genre. They are musical descriptions, preceded by spoken lines, and they become tone poems or musical illustrations inspired by the islanders, their words and marvelous simplicity. The mood is complete, yet hovers strangely in the air like a vague tantalizing dream." Jonny Trunk on the reissue: 'I'd first heard the album in about 2010 on a bizarre bootlegged CD (edited strangely with exotic library music), and spent the next few years desperately trying to find an original pressing. About one copy turns up a year, it seems to be far rarer than the legendary Eden's Island album (1960) and occupies a similar musical space. But this album has a little more death. Heaven knows what new listeners will think of Polynesia, but it sure is a dark and weird musical trip. One I feel everyone should take." Personnel: Buddy Collette - flute, clarinet; Gene Cipriano - oboe, English horn, bass clarinet; Gerald Wilson - trumpet; Justin Ditullio - cello; Al Viola - guitar, banjo; Red Callender - bass, tuba; Earl Palmer - drums; Ed Lustgarden - cello. New sleeve notes by Trunk.

VIERS Hurt Me 12"
Turbo Recordings present a release by UK artist Viers, a culmination of a process that would leave virtually anyone else dead or insane. "VLVX Spiral Down" and "Hurt Me" were inspired by the crazy energy of DIY fetish techno parties, which are generally better than corporate-sponsored fetish parties, although Red Bull Leather Academy has done some cool stuff. Meanwhile, "Blow" and "I'm Gonna Get" feature big vocal samples repurposed from Viers's "deep dive" into the history of jungle music. If you enjoy this release, please do us a favor and never use the term "deep dive" again. Just say you've been "bonin' up" or something.

CONTROLLED DEATH Symphony For The Black Murder CD
Controlled Death is the new project by the Japanese noise legend Masonna and Symphony For The Black Murder was first official work released in April 2018 in a vinyl edition of 199 copies. The activities of Controlled Death are like archaic revival to the music experience before Masonna. You can also find the pathology image of the early industrial period and the shadows of Vienna activism such as Hermann Nitsch. The existence and art that pierces through conspicuous consciousness and dives to areas of unconsciousness due to death and pleasure. The tracks on the album are based on obsessive and compulsive synth drones with voice, effects, and tapes. The smell of death is soaked in every sound produced by the brilliant mind of Maso Yamazaki. Anxiety, alienation, and hypochondria turn into a deep paranoia in pain. Without hesitation, the bodies are emptied, leaving the field to an electronics purulence of rare power disconcerting: a perfect Symphony For The Black Murder. This CD issue includes a 30-minute bonus track recorded live during "Black Murder Gig" at Namba Bears Osaka on September 1, 2018. Digipack; edition of 199.

MERZBOW Metalvelodrome 4CD BOX
Urashima present a reissue of Merzbow's Metalvelodrome, originally released in 1993. Merzbow stands as the most important artist in noise music. The moniker of Japanese artist Masami Akita was born in Tokyo in 1979. Inspired by Dadaism and surrealism, Akita took the name for his project from German artist Kurt Schwitters's pre-war architectural assemblage "The Cathedral of Erotic Misery" or "Merzbau". Just as Schwitters attacked the entrenched artistic traditions of his time with his revolutionary avant-garde collages, so too would Akita challenge the contemporary concept of what is called music. Merzbow would draw further influence from the futurist movement. Not only would he embrace the futurists' love of technology and the machine civilization, he would push their fondness for noise to the very boundaries of the extreme. Working in his home, he quickly gained notoriety as a purveyor of a musical genre composed solely of pure, unadulterated noise. By the '90s, Merzbow had a significant underground reputation for creating harsh and power electronics album. Metalvelodrome was released in 1993 by the fabulous Japanese label Alchemy in a four-CD box. The tracks fall right in-between the atmosphere of Merzbow's early '90s work and his more hyper-aggressive mid-90s power electronics work and it's a charming mix, presenting the listener with some of the best elements from each phase of his evolution. Along with Noisembryo (1994), Venereology (1994), and Pulse Demon (1996) represent the top of the immense artist's production. All tracks performed using cheap electronics and junk, no use for synthesizer and midi sampler. Remastered and revised without the two tracks live and with four bonus tracks at Munemihouse in 2019 by Masami Akita. This reissue comes in a silver wooden box with laser engraving of original artwork cover on front (and inside) and Urashima logo on back. Each single CD inside wooden box comes in cardboard wallet with new artwork by Masami Akita; includes foldable and individually numbered certificate; edition of 500.

MIKAWA, TOSHIJI Radio Code CD
Urashima present a reissue of Toshiji Mikawa's Radio Code, originally released on cassette in 1989. Toshiji Mikawa started his musical activities in the late 1970s and joined the legendary and notorious Japanese noise legend Hijokaidan. In 1981 he formed Incapacitants to pursue his interest in pure noise, in contrast to the more performance art oriented Hijokaidan at that time. Initially a solo project, later he was joined by Fumio Kosakai to make Incapacitants a duo that has been widely acknowledged for their extreme sound and intense live performances. Still active member with both groups nowadays, Mikawa has only made very few solo works without the participation of other parties. Radio Code is one of the rare opportunities to hear in his own personal element. Performed on black box electronics designed and built by Mikawa and destroyed in use. Recorded in 1988 and released the follow year in C60 cassette on AQM, label started in 1978 and run by John Duncan, at first in Los Angeles, then later in Japan, finally ending when Duncan moved to Holland. Comes in special hand-made package made by plate of black foam laser engraved, black tissue paper and string; includes an insert in special paper that replicates the original credits. Edition of 199.

VA This Is Mainstream! CD
Wewantsounds continues its collaboration with Bob Shad's grandchildren, Mia and Judd Apatow, to present a selection of 13 turntable-friendly Mainstream Records tracks recorded between 1970 and 1973. Ultimate breaks and beats from Mainstream Records. The Mainstream sound is unmistakable: Earthy, rich and funky, it's the signature sound of producer Bob Shad. After working with such geniuses as Charlie Parker, The Platters, Billie Holiday, and Janis Joplin over three decades, Shad decided to go back to producing Great Black Music in the early '70s through his label Mainstream Records and started releasing a formidable series of jazz albums known as the 300 series. Released between 1971 and 1974, these albums are the main source of this set. Coincidentally, it opens with one of the two tracks on the tracklist not produced by Shad himself. Saundra Phillips' "Miss Fatback" is nonetheless fascinating as it's one of cult disco producer Greg Carmichael's earliest productions from 1975. The other track not issued by the Shad sound factory is Almeta Lattimore's 7" single "These Memories," a truly great soulful track from 1975 and now a sought-after classic on the international soul scene. Shad's forte was jazz, and the sessions with great musicians, including Bernard Purdie, Billy Hart, Stanley Clarke, Dom Um Romao, Joe Sample, Freddie Robinson, to name just a few. Filled with gorgeous Fender Rhodes chords and heavy basslines, they define the unmistakable Mainstream sound which had one foot in the great jazz and bop tradition and the other in the sonic jazz explorations of the early '70s. Oscillating between jazzed-up covers of soul hits like Jay Berliner's "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" or Afrique's "Kissing My Love" and more introspective originals such as Hal Galper's "This Moment" or Dave Hubbard's "T.B.'s Delight", They all have this perfect balance between groove and depth. One perfect example is Pete Yellin's "Bird And The Ouija Board", a superb 12-minute opus starting off with a deep abstract improvisation before switching to an up-tempo funk beat. Shad had a long-standing association with such jazz divas and this side is represented here by Maxine Weldon's beautifully breezy version of David Gates' standard "Make It With You" and Sarah Vaughan's superb "Just A Little Lovin'". Also features December's Children, Blue Mitchell, Reggie Moore, and Buddy Terry. Most of the tracks released for the first time since their original release. Remastered from the original tapes. Liner notes by UK journalist Paul Bowler.
