VA Fundamentum 003 12"
Fundamentum 003 is the second various artist record release of the Berlin based label Atmophile Electronics -- four tracks by local musicians focusing on playful modular synthesis. Jessica Kert's composition isn't focused on dancefloors but instead entices the listener into a slowly progressing story. Label co-owner Sharad Sood delivers a song that has a powerful kick-bass structure wrapped with complex yet soothing melodic atmospheres. Kangding Ray offers a DJ-friendly track with a bass loaded punching groove and a friendly, sweet vibe. Naty Seres, label founder, drops a tune that's atmospheric but experiments with driving rhythms and darkly resonating sounds.

ONDA & PAUL CLIPSON, AKI Make Visible The Ghosts LP
audioMER. announce the release of a new LP; Make Visible The Ghosts with music by Aki Onda and artwork by Paul Clipson. This album is the follow-up of Aki Onda's Cinemage project Lost City -- with Loren Connors and Alan Licht -- released on audioMER. in 2015 (AUDIOMER 013LP). On Make Visible The Ghosts, New York-based musician Aki Onda composed the soundtrack for the images of the San Francisco experimental filmmaker Paul Clipson, who suddenly passed away on February 3, 2018. In 2009, Clipson and Onda met at the Amsterdam Schiphol Airport for the first time and shared a ride to the International Film Festival Rotterdam, where they presented audio-visual works in the same bill. Since then, the two artists -- known for their highly personal approach with Super 8, 16mm, cassette Walkman, and radio -- maintained a close friendship over the next nine years. Their works deal with memory, time, space, and those reflections, and they had a lot to share. Onda and Clipson completed their collaboration work Make Visible The Ghosts -- a combination of vinyl LP of Onda's music and large-size collage artwork by Clipson -- a few months before Clipson's departure from life. The work is composed of the materials they used for their performance in New York in 2012 and developed over the three years from 2015 to 2017. Onda notes: "The loss of Paul has left a huge hole in our mind including his friends and collaborators. Paul is no longer here, and this is a chance to remember him and his images that extended and expanded our perception of how the world can be seen and heard."

SMITH & MUDD Tea With Holger LP
It seems KPM have long been fans of Smith & Mudd and, after being introduced to each other by mutual friend Andy Allday, the peerless Balearic maestros were invited to contribute to the library label's digital-only "Album Shorts" project. It makes perfect sense for Be With Records to take on the vinyl release of this instant library classic. But why is it called Tea With Holger? "Holger" is of course Holger Czukay and the whole LP is dedicated to Smith & Mudd's time spent with him and Ursa Major at Can's famous Inner Space Studio in Weilerswist, near Cologne. When not recording it seems they spent a great deal of time sat around being entertained by Holger's stories and drinking many cups of different sorts of tea. The album was recorded over several years in London, Margate, and Gorthleck, a small hamlet in the Scottish Highlands. Mike Piggott, who played with Bert Jansch, handled the strings and played violin whilst Sam Creer lent his virtuoso cello work to the proceedings. They wanted to capture magical improvisational moments live and not do the work later on in editing. They describe the tracks collectively as "Balearic themes including breezy soul, sun-dappled melodies, warm pianos and sweeping strings". A gentle piano ushers in opening track "The Gardener" soon joined by low, bubbling drums. When the time is just right, lush guitars glisten above a Welsh language vocal that floats like silk. "Innerspace" is a nod to Can's aforementioned studio. Dark, heavy piano meets rolling drums before warm chords and luscious strings take over, gliding over moody grooves. "Weilerswist" delivers more beautifully rolling piano and guitars over thumping cellos and building drums. The full, string-enhanced version of "Away From Me" is Smith & Mudd's preferred version, only made available here on this vinyl issue. Tribal tones, piano, and cello set a melodic staccato for violin to soar over while rolling piano lines and gospel organ chords descend into a drum drop. Distant synths introduce sun-drenched guitars and uplifting strings in "Kölner Street", before a spacey Moog solo leads to a spellbinding, sci-fi drop. The album closes with "Tea With Holger". Airy vocal swells are punctuated by plucked cellos and picked guitars, all wonderfully warmed by a soulful piano. Cut by Pete Norman and pressed in the Netherlands by Record Industry. Comes in a classic KPM green sleeve complete. 140 gram vinyl.

HIETT, STEVE Down On The Road By The Beach LP
LP version. 140 gram vinyl; gatefold sleeve; includes 16-page insert with photos and liner notes. For the first time since its inception in 1983, Steve Hiett's elusive Down On The Road By The Beach is finally made available outside of Japan. Most recognized in the fashion sphere as an English photographer and graphic designer, Hiett's transportive audio portraits amplify his serpentine guitar to the infinite blue, recorded across Paris, Tokyo and New York. A career devotee of Brian Wilson's groundbreaking harmonies, Hiett shot The Beach Boys for Rolling Stone -- as well as The Doors, Miles Davis, and Jimi Hendrix -- while establishing himself as a fashion photographer. Decamping to Paris in 1972, he began what would become 20-year collaborations with Vogue Paris and Marie Claire. In 1982, representatives from Tokyo's Galerie Watari visited him to propose a solo exhibition. Asking if he could insert a 7" of original music into the back of the exhibition catalogue, Hiett laid down "Blue Beach - Welcome To Your Beach" in a Parisian radio station, playing all of the instruments himself, and two more cuts in New York with Yoko Ono, The Doobie Brothers, and Steely Dan hired-gun, Elliot Randall. Once dispatched, there were requests for him to fly to Tokyo to record; it wasn't until he arrived that he discovered CBS/Sony had facilitated an entire album. Heitt hastily gripped some petty cash, bought a guitar, and retreated to his hotel room to start writing. Entering the studio the following day, he was further surprised by a waiting room of session players known as Moonriders -- one of Japan's most acclaimed rock bands of the 1980s. Intimidated by their indecipherable sheet music, Hiett suggested Randall join them and with money being no object for major labels at the time, his wingman was on the next plane out of New York. Near-ambient arrangements that float in a space between The Durutti Column, Steve Cropper, and Ashra, Down On The Road By The Beach also crowns Hiett the master of recontextualization with his zero-gravity blues visions of "Roll Over Beethoven", Santo & Johnny's "Sleep Walk" and the 1967 Eddie Floyd soul hit, "Never Found A Girl". Produced in coordination between Be With Records, Efficient Space and the artist, this definitive reissue is restored from original masters; extensive liner notes penned by Mikey IQ Jones.

HIETT, STEVE Girls In The Grass LP
LP version. 140 gram vinyl; includes four-page insert with photos and liner notes. Three emotional years in the making, Be With and Efficient Space present Steve Hiett's Girls In The Grass. Pressed alongside the long-awaited reissue of his one-shot masterpiece, Down On The Road By The Beach (BEWITH 001CD/061LP), these ten Balearic soul instrumentals are of equal necessity; unrivalled beauty rescued from the fashion photographer-guitarist Paris Tapes (1986-1997). While recordings unintended for release should often be approached with caution, this is a rare case of unheard material being assembled as an indispensable and coherent piece. Girls In The Grass is something super special. The light and shadow that defines Hiett's music is arguably more compelling here. It speaks to us in a language that feels profound, yet entirely comforting and familiar. Girls In The Grass reintroduces Hiett's languid electric blues boogie, crafted on Saturday afternoons with fellow art director Simon Kentish. Kentish would cook, pour some wine, and then utilize his arsenal of technology. He'd dial up a chugging rhythm, together with some ambient pads or keyboard textures, and anchor the weightless gauze of Hiett's six-stringed touch. Hiett's guitar sings with the same clean, crisp tone as Down On The Road, animated by a carefree weekend groove. Unlike his defining album which was boiled under pressure, these subsequent sessions have all the time in the world. The naïve melodies chart a missing link between Vini Reilly's ventures into electronica and Booker T, sounding like sun-warped takes on wordless, fractured non-hits from his heroes The Beach Boys. Remastered from the previously unreleased, original masters by Simon Francis. These private moments are adorned with Hiett's singular photography and feature typically idiosyncratic liner notes from Mikey IQ Jones.

A LILY Id-Dar Tal-Missier LP
Id-Dar Tal-Missier (Maltese for "The House of the Father") is the new solo album from yndi halda founding member James Vella. James wrote and performed all the instrumentation on Id-Dar Tal-Missier, recording largely at home on his own setup, creating finished pieces layer-by-layer. Though the main body of composition is based on guitar and voice, Vella's list of instruments also includes banjo, cello, organ, xylophone, an ancient Chinese harp named guzheng, and drumkit, amounting to subtle and intelligent arrangements and beautiful textures. A few contributions from Vella's friends also grace the record: Mercury nominee C Duncan lends a lush choral vocal arrangement to "Banana Moth" and yndi halda co-founder Daniel Neal performs violin across several pieces. Often inspired by non-musical forms, Vella writes that Id-Dar Tal-Missier was instead created under the influence of sensory experiences. He lists filmmakers, Werner Herzog and Apichatpong Weerasethakul; the TV show Stranger Things; his dog Sully; the ("painstaking") process of writing his first novel; books by Cormac McCarthy, Gabriel Garcia Márquez, John Cheever, and Carson McCullers; visits to India, South America, and the Middle East. The artwork for Id-Dar Tal-Missier is based on photographs by James's father Mark who, since his retirement from medicine, has entered the world of nature photography. These photos were taken in Myanmar in early 2018; they reference the openness and immediacy of everything.

ABYSMAL GROWLS OF DESPAIR Sentir Le Poids Des Montagnes Et Trouver La Paix Dans Les Tenebres CD
Exploring hitherto unchartered abysses with its ultra-ultra-low-frequency 432Hz recording of six basses, six guitars and rumbling, tectonic kargyraa vocals: Abysmal Growls Of Despair maybe is what doom sounds like on Mars. The landscape of Mars is known as "chaos terrain" and nothing on Earth resembles it. It consists of irregular blocks, some that are tens of kilometers across and a hundred or more meters high patterned with craters that are hundreds of meters deep -- a terrain ravaged by geological wars between countless ice ages and planet-reshaping activity from Mars' three god-named volcanos -- Elysium Mons, Hecates Tholus and Albor Tholus, Consisting of one 66-minute and six-second track, Sentir Le Poids Des Montagnes Et Trouver La Paix Dans Les Ténèbres would make an excellent soundtrack to navigating these alien crevasses and subterranean glaciers, with the ethereal throat-singing of Hangsvart (Abysmal's one-man doom army) chasing around the ragged stalagmites and stalactites of Sunn 0)))-crushing guitar like Martian ghosts. Recommended for fans of Phurpa, Senyawa, Huun-Huur-Tu, or even Blue Tapes' own Jute Gyte.

KOHN Kohn 1 2LP
"Imagination: that was the feeling and the starting point of the debut album Jurgen De Blonde recorded under the moniker Kohn in 1998. Surrounded by an old sampler, an analogue synthesizer, a cheap sequencer, acoustic and electric guitar, bass and an electret microphone he modulated and crafted his own personal parallel universe in his bedroom in Gent. A world where the sound of a skipping cd mutates in a shoegaze vibe, hunted mosquitoes are locked in a psycho-acoustic melancholy or ringing phone songs slides into a brutal grime beat echoing the beginning days of Belgian electronic body music. 21 years on this debut is remastered and released for the first time on vinyl. Recommended if you like early Autechre, Oval, vintage electronics, shoegazing beat, instrumental Death Grips, demented industrial, nostalgia futurica, derailed post rock or excellent music in general . . . This person who is 'Kohn' seems to have no interest in seeing the tiny blizzards and blue-phosphorescent stars that pop out of his own chemicals. The whole thing is for us to dissect and admire, I feel certain that Kohn is already onto something new. Probably something so much further out it only exists in the ether." --excerpt of the included liner notes by Brecht "Razen" Ameel"The goal was to make music that was rhythmic but without obvious percussion and drum sounds, to sample anything and hear what was possible or how it would inspire me. No effects, I didn't want to use any effects like reverb or delay, except as part of the sound. I wanted the sound to be dry and direct. No washes of reverb or sounds drowning in echo. This was not supposed to be an ambient record. Only the last two tracks were allowed an exception to this. Sounds belong to the room they're played in. I didn't want them to be in a space before leaving the speakers. Electronic sounds have no original acoustic space nor are they enhanced by a resonant body before they enter the air through a loudspeaker. I wanted the electronic sounds to be raw in that aspect, no polish or fake space. This, the sound of bedroom production." --excerpt of the included liner notes by Jurgen De Blonde

POWEL Iblard EP 12"
Powel always finds a way to thread natural elegance and tasteful patience in his productions. "Iblard" is sparse; its aquatic pads draw you into a warm place where discordant melodies swirl across dripping percussion. "The Grand Opening" named after (and also sampling) the Swedish band, adds live instrumentation to the deep house aesthetic with aplomb. "Aburaya" is next in both vocal, and instrumental form -- deeply Detroit-ian by design, the uplifting pads and keys made this life-affirming. On "Johannesburg", a sparse beat slowly transforming into a warm vibe with Rhodes-y keys, violins, and male vocal ad libs.

FORTUNE, IONA Tao Of I Volume 2 LP
Iona Fortune crystallizes and convects enchanting thoughts on the legendary I Ching in a keenly awaited second volume of Tao of I, following from her resoundingly acclaimed 2017 debut for Optimo Music (OM 010LP), where lustrous synthetic subbass meets traditional Chinese strings with sublimely spirited and timeless effect Issued by Ecstatic as the second of eight albums by Iona exploring hexagrams of the I Ching, or "The Book of Changes" -- a 2,500-year-old Chinese divination text referenced extensively in religion, art, philosophy, psychoanalysis, science, and mathematics. Tao Of I Volume 2 sees the Glasgow-raised, Zurich-based artist refer to millennia of human experience through an electro-acoustic prism of Synthi AKS, guzheng, and Gamelan, newly expanded with erhu, kim, yanqin, zhong, and bawu. The wider scope of her palette allows a greater detail of airy calligraphic expression to her multi-dimensional microcosmos, channeling a wondrous energy in a fluidly melodic narration of mystic ideas made musically tangible. In eight parts Iona acts as conduit for extraordinary, invisible, and arcane forces. Inspired by the I Ching's fundamental principles, her music resonates with a visceral and cosmic conception of human essence, infusing minimalist frameworks with finely tempered but lush emotive cues that bring to life the I Ching's conviction that "music has the power to ease tension within the heart and to loosen the grip of obscure emotions." Iona's music most beautifully manifests this idea in concisely exacting forms and to contemplative ends, creating a slow, serene and harmonious music that coolly commands relaxed states of reception, best for mulling over life, and stuff. At once as light as a fleeting thought but permanent as an organism passing on its code, the music conjures mindsets comparable to Coil at their uncanniest, the post-erotica 4th world sensations generated by Jon Hassell, or the dark energy expressed in David Lynch films and their soundtracks. Most crucially Iona achieves this through a synthesis of self-exploration and instrumental actualization, employing an unusual composition strategy of inner cultivation and empathic performance to divine and realize a spellbinding, penetrative otherness. RIYL: Coil, Laraaji, Jon Hassell, David Lynch & Angelo Badalamenti. Mastered and cut by Dubplates & Mastering.

SPILUTTINI, DINO Heaven LP
"Heaven is a work of contemporary church music. Centrally occupied with the subject of death, its conceptualization was catalyzed by Dino Spiluttini's discovering his mother's preparations both for her own death and for his. He arrived at her home in 2015 to be led into the local church and shown the two adjacent places she had reserved for their urns. The tracks on Heaven together consist of an analogously personal and anticipatory negotiation with death. Partly derived from organ recordings made in the same church, the album frequently enlists Arvo Pärt's compositional method of tintinnabuli. Aside from the thematic logic of its sacred associations, the method suits Spiluttini's tendency, in spite of heavy and dynamic passages, to minimize tonal complexity. His characteristic uses of gnashing bass, restlessly irregular pacing and serrated distortion return. This time, they combine with pads, harps, fluttering organs and swooping choirs. Track titles throughout Heaven conjure intense emotional conflicts, especially those arising from experiences of embodiment. Touch isolation is a term for the toxic masculine stigma against platonic touch between men. If such a reference on an album preoccupied with death and afterlife raises the question of whether Spiluttini considers any touch -- let alone platonic -- to be possible in Heaven, the title 'Flesh Angel' perhaps answers it. As with 'Body at War' and 'Weakened Centurion', such a title positions the agitation of its music among ongoing struggles with body acceptance. Meanwhile, 'Rainbow Bridge' recalls the 1980s prose poem promising an eternal reunion in death with one's beloved lost pets. In context, these various indices seem to capture the yearning speculation that, as the nexuses of experience, bodies are not discarded in death; on the contrary, they achieve a state of perfection. Heaven revolves within dramatic and ever-changing vignettes. As church music, it lacks real communal participation or fidelity to hymnal text. Instead, it must come to terms with negation and eternity as dependable threats to generational and spatial distance, to personal struggles with earthly embodiment and to the anxious, hyperactive navigation of identity in late modernity." --Edward Trethowan Front photos and layout by Dino Spiluttini. Recorded, produced and mixed by Dino Spiluttini. Mastered by Rashad Becker.

The legendary stoner rockers are back! One of the first bands of the genre present their eighth album after their first EP, Side FX, back in 1994, the era of grunge rock. This time the album hits directly to the soul. Eight new tracks which are different to each other, combining groovy parts with heaviness and melodies. The guitars are still heavy but spacey and psychedelic at the same time. The bass is always groovy with intense playing. All together with a lot of catchy melodies and the power of Argy's vocals are the secret of the music of Nightstalker. Raw rock 'n roll simplicity, stunning riffs, and electric haze are what have kept the band going for more than 20 years. Produced by Nightstalker again, and this time it is recorded and mixed at Wreck it Sound Studios. Listening to Nightstalker you can figure out why Greece is the perfect country for stoner rock bands and why the Greek stoner scene is one of the greatest worldwide. IDEALIST, THE Say Yes To No LP
Joachim Nordwall digests and mutates dub in unique industrial style on The iDEAList's almighty follow-up to a tape and 7" in this killer mode, bringing guest vocalists, JA's Nazamba and polymath John Duncan, for a deeply crooked ride worthy of rinse and repeat. Picking up where his raw Early Tactical Experiments In Techno & Dub left off in spring 2019, the rugged styles of Say Yes to No poses only slightly less risk of contracting salmonella with a more stewed and treated suite taking in proper songs starring Nazamba and John Duncan amid all manner of virulent, wayward electro-dub variation. As with his superb tape for Industrial Coast, that wicked 7" with Genesis P-Orridge, and even his recent albums as Joachim Nordwall -- Conventional Wisdom with John Duncan (IDEAL 182LP), and the collaborative CD Communication Is Key -- the iDEALIST naturally highlights fundamental links between dub and noise, the core principles of manipulating sound in space, with a critical blend of tactile playfulness and rigorous pressure. The two vocal cuts are outstanding in their own rights; "Bigga Boss" features Kingston-based poet and playwright Nazamba utterly possessing the opening shot with his baritone growl, rooting the LP at one pole, while John Duncan's equally compelling appearance on a similar riddim in "Tough Doubt" comes to epitomize the project's direct approach toward alloying and allying styles with alchemical suss comparable to The Bug, Ossia, or Andreas Tilliander. Vocals also spill out into the LP's other tracks, but here they're more textural and elusive, scudding thru "Everyone Fucking Relax" in a way recalling DJ Scud's thudding remix of Bong-Ra, or masticated into intelligibility on the amorphous dub-noise lurch of "Inner Space Dub (Insane Version)" and the LP's cataclysmic closer "Say Yes To Dub", which are all held tight in contrast with the more defined techno and electro-dub structures of the LP's club-ready highlights, "The Ecstasy" and "Shit Skull/Golden Mind". It's a hugely enjoyable album -- one that leaves bits in your teef and gets up in your head like a healthy dab of shatter. RIYL: Ossia, DJ Scud, Andreas Tilliander, Jay Glass Dubs. Mastered for vinyl and at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin.

GRUP DOGUS Grup Dogus LP
Grup Do?u? (literally means "rising") is a unique type of band among the others in the soundscape of "Gastarbeiter" (guest workers). The band is formed by two brothers, who were guest workers emigrated from Turkey to Germany. Tufan Aydo?an, also attributed as "Hammond Tufan, the Conqueror of all the Organs" by Bar?? Manço, was organist and the vocalist of the band while his brother Muhittin Aydo?an was on bass, Koray Dikmen on drums, and Sedat Ürküt on guitar and vocals. While performing in nightclubs, by a good coincidence, they received a proposal to record for a one-take album to be issued on cassette in 1975. This low-selling cassette album full of Anadolu pop repertoire was almost forgotten till now. Selected tracks from the album have been remastered and released in vinyl format -- as it had long deserved. The songs here are raw and non-produced type of Anatolian pop, which offer us a soundscape that is not restricted with the limitations of mainstream labels. Therefore, long lasting guitar and Hammond solos, a progressive attitude, flowing energy and groove leave a strong mark on all titles. Strange but true, Grup Do?u? definitely found the way to perform those songs of Anatolian pop heritage in a more mind-blowing way compared to originals of their composers or performers such as Bar?? Manço, Cem Karaca, Üç Hürel, and Selda. The album contains eight songs from the only album of Grup Do?u?. Includes two-page insert in English and Turkish with lots of photos.

Mad About Guerssen present a reissue of Kak's self-titled album, originally released in 1969. A west coast classic back on vinyl at last. Recorded in 1968, the lone album by the group known as Kak is a beloved masterpiece, full of the inspiration and promise associated with the California psychedelic dream. The oddly-named, eminently talented quartet from the college town of Davis was together less than a year from start to finish, yet within that short time created a record renowned for powerful performances, solid production values, and the brilliance of its song craft, with a full playlist of compelling material like "Electric Sailor", "Lemonaide Kid", and "Trieulogy". Kak can stand nobly alongside records like Surrealistic Pillow (1967), Electric Music For The Mind And Body (1967), Sailor (1974), or the first Moby Grape album (1967) as one of the most satisfying listens of the late 1960s SF rock renaissance. This newly remastered vinyl edition features extensive liner notes by Kak aficionado Alec Palao, with contributions from band members Gary Lee Yoder, Dehner Patten, Joe-Dave Damrell, and Chris Lockheed. GRIFFITH, JOHNNY The Geneva Connection LP
Mad About Records present a reissue of Johnny Griffith's The Geneva Connection, originally released on the Detroit Geneva label in 1974. Detroit jazz-funk, hard-to-find -- an extremely rare album left by Detroit-based jazz keyboard player Johnny Griffith known for the album Together, Togetherness on RCA (1974). Music From The Connection was composed by jazz pianist Freddie Redd for Jack Gelber's 1959 play The Connection. This first recording of the music was released on the Blue Note label in 1960. It features performances by Redd and Jackie McLean. Jack Gelber originally planned for the play to feature improvised music performed by jazz musicians who would also play small roles in the production. Freddie Redd, however, persuaded Gelber to include his original score. Redd re-recorded the score later in 1960 as Music From The Connection. In 1974, the pianist Johnny Griffith, a member of the prestigious Motown rhythm section Funk Brothers at the time, covered the whole album, playing electric piano here, which really changes the vibe of the music -- and the players are supposedly a host of Motown studio musicians -- playing jazz here, but with a nice funky soul undercurrent. Pianist Johnny Griffith can be heard on classic Motown sides, as well as on recordings from other Detroit-area labels. Like Motown's other pianists, Joe Hunter and Earl Van Dyke, Griffith's had an extensive musical background. Signed to Motown's Jazz Workshop label, he recorded the albums Detroit Jazz and The Right Side of Lefty Edwards (1964). When the march of the Motown hits began, Griffith started playing on sessions for their R&B/pop acts. But rather than signing a work-for-hire contract with Motown like other musicians, Griffith remained a freelancer, doing other dates and sessions in New York and nearby Chicago. The Motown hits that Griffith played on include: Marvin Gaye's "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)", his celeste trills are heard on "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)", adding Wurlitzer electric piano on both Gaye's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine", and the Temptations' "Ain't Too Proud to Beg", organ on the Supremes' "Stop In The Name Of Love", and organ and shotgun effects on Junior Walker and the All Stars' "Shotgun". Griffith's non-Motown hits are with Edwin Starr, Jackie Wilson, The Chi-Lites, and Young-Holt Unlimited's "Soulful Strut". 180 gram vinyl; Heavy cardboard sleeve with obi.

ANDREWS AND THE FELLOWSHIP, REGGIE Mystic Beauty LP
Mad About Records present a reissue of Reggie Andrews and The Fellowship's Mystic Beauty, originally released in 1969. '60s jazz holy grail LP out of California -- a mythical album on many jazz collector's want-lists. This LP is on the extremely limited and sought-after private press label HME. It has deep Latin, Afro/Cuban-influences, and consists primarily of acoustic jazz pieces. Influences also range from the cerebral to the soulful, but it defies any one-dimensional tag like "spiritual jazz" or "soul-jazz" or "jazz-funk." Heralding from LA and led by pianist Reggie Andrews, it doesn't sound particularly "west coast". It's a beautiful session all around, really something special and profound. In recent years, Reggie Andrews has taught, mentored, and produced many talented musicians including Patrice Rushen, Terrace Martin, Ndugu Chancler, and the Dazz Band who wrote "Let It Whip", along with his close friend Leon Ndugu Chancler. He is the founder of the jazz-fusion group Karma. He worked with Earth, Wind & Fire, produced Moacir Santos for Blue Note Records, served as an "electronics consultant" for Donald Byrd, and took to mentoring The Pharcyde and J Dilla. 180 gram vinyl; Heavy cardboard sleeve with obi.

AGITATION FREE Last LP
2019 repress. "When the band Agitation Free came together in 1967 as a result of the merging of two Berlin rock groups, one of the most interesting groups in a dawning independent German music scene was created. With their improvisations between rock, jazz and new music, Agitation Free -- soon relegated to the not so flattering category of 'Krautrock' -- made musical forays into areas that few of their fellow German musicians had ever penetrated. At a time when most in Germany were still orienting themselves as closely as possible to Anglo-American musical formats, Agitation Free found a completely new and very original form of musical expression. Starting with their debut album Malesch, Agitation Free delivered a fascinating sound, influenced not least by the manifold impressions from a Near East tour. The band moved toward a form of meta-music, a weaving of exotic-sounding compositions. The album has been justly regarded as a milestone in the genre, especially abroad. Looking back, it's evident that the Agitation Free was one of the most important bands of the experimental circle known as the 'Berlin School', and a career springboard for a whole slew of musicians. At the same time, this policy of changing personnel also meant risking that the band couldn't keep itself together over the long run. Agitation Free consciously took this risk in order to remain as close as possible to their own concept - free from commercial pressure or concessions to the latest trends and modes."

MAGALETTI & JULIAN SARTORIUS, VALENTINA Sulla Pelle LP
"Valentina Magaletti and Julian Sartorius maintain a dialogue of irregular tempos and off-kilter percussion on their first collaborative record titled Sulla Pelle. Valentina is a force in the world of electronic and experimental music - working with Tom Relleen under Tomaga, jazz/pop band Vanishing Twin, the collective UUUU with a couple of releases on Editions Mego, as well as various collaborations with the likes of Nicholas Jaar and Raime/Moin to name a couple. Julian Sartorius is a denizen in and of the beat -- he's collaborated with artists such as Matthew Herbert, Shahzad Ismaily, Sylvie Courvoisier, as well as touring worldwide and widely through Europe with his solo show on the bill with the likes of Deerhoof, Faust, and Jaki Liebezeit. It's apparent that time is not perceived in an ordinary manner by Julian -- he's released a Beat Diary consisting of 365 beats and, on a daily basis, adds an element to his collage and modifies an 8-second audio loop under the project called Morph. More recently, he played percussion on the track 'Firesmoke' on Kate Tempest's new record The Book of Traps and Lessons. Sulla Pelle chisels away at your headspace at varying velocities with a harmonious flow -- at times gently carving out channels that dramatically flood with syncopated kick drums and shifting propulsive beats. It's as much about monotonous playing as it is about those moments where it seems as though every vertebra branches into tentacles and antennas ricocheting hits in foreign symbiosis. Rasping prepared drums that traverse the body into all sorts of ceremonial throttles, hedonistic arm flails, primal cheer at every incipient dynamic accent. This raw and sparse drumming and percussion record sees Valentina and Julian cueing each other in on interlocked ratchets and clanks with different mallets and metalwork from Malcom Catto's studio on top of modular tinkering and occasional distant subdued ramblings."

DIRON ANIMAL Pair LP
Singer, lyricist, and composer Nirox Romão, aka Diron Animal, was born and raised in Cazenga, Angola. Diron Animal's involvement in the music world began early: he was part of a traditional Angolan music band and capoeira group, followed by a hip-hop project. In 2007, he moved to Portugal to study, but music became more than just a passion when he landed in kuduro. For over six years, he sang, danced, and traveled the world with Afro Portuguese act Thoes + The Shine, mixing rock and kuduro, becoming an explosive ensemble. At one moment, Diron wanted to record a solo album to show a bit more of his own personality and in late 2017 his debut album Alone appeared on Soundway Records (SNDW 123LP), where he himself worked out the melodies, rhythm, vocals and even the guitar parts between classic funk to Afrohouse and kuduro bass. Through that album he explored major festivals in Europe during 2018, such as at Paléo Festival Nyon, Trans Musicales Festival, Amsterdam Dance Event, and others. On Pair, his second album and released on Brussels outer-national label Rebel Up Records, he has worked hard to enhance his special formula. Inspired by the cruel death his nephew, it became a testament against oppression via the mixed sounds of Afro boogie, disco, funk, Afrohouse, coupé décalé, and kuduro, with English and Portuguese lyrics. The first single of the album, "You and Me", is an English sung Afro boogie disco song and produced by Diron with the support of musician and producer Moullinex, actor André Cabral, and video made by director Vasco Mendes. In the video, featuring dancer and actor André Cabral, Diron Animal takes on the role of a gay man to express that a homosexual is a normal person who loves, feels desire, dreams, conquers, wants to be loved and desired, wants to live next to a being that completes him. With "You and Me", Diron Animal above all wants to appeal to society, respect for the choice of people and non-discrimination of sexual choices. For in life we all deserve to be happy regardless of our sexual choice. Includes download.

VA Towards A Total Poetry LP
Recital label head Sean McCann on Towards A Total Poetry: "Culled from live performances in Los Angeles in 1980, Towards A Total Poetry holds radioplays and sound poems by Julien Blaine, Adriano Spatola, F. Tiziano, and Paul Vangelisti. Two concerts were organized by poet and professor Vangelisti and broadcast on his KPFK radio show. A rare gathering of extreme French and Italian sound poets in California, flown out on with an arts funding grant (my, how things have changed!). A jarred specimen on a golden platter of a time passed . . . Sadistically funny, dizzy with confusion: a map lies dissected on the table. Adriano Spatola (1941-1988) is the most beautiful Italian post-war poet, also publisher of Baobab, Tam Tam, Geiger editions. His stage presence is that of a drunken wolverine, thrashing his words and letters, madly chuckling and whispering secrets to himself. Spatola interprets a disfigured rendition of 'Buddenbrooks,' a traumatic and shocking radioplay, held alongside his infamous 'Aviation / Aviateur' and 'Al Capone Poem,' read with explosive tension. His younger brother, F. Tiziano, is a more mysterious figure. His radioplay, 'Los Angeles Bridge,' has four characters: North, South, East, and West. Quibbling through a fever dream over a card game. Professional voice actors were hired for all of the radioplays, translated from Italian by Vangelisti (as with all of Spatola's English publications). French artist and sound poet Julien Blaine (1942) composed the play 'Passe/Futur' -- utilizing his actors as verbal instruments: buzzing and howling as carefully as dots on sheet-music. His sound poems are hilarious, 'Amputation' mimics the sound of four severing surgeries, and 'Mots d'enfants' still confuses me as to what exactly is going on... Paul Vangelisti's works open and close Towards A Total Poetry. The Los Angeles poet and publisher of Red Hill Press organized the affair and was able to hold his own against such powerful artists. Paul's pieces are conceptual, opening with a fitting typewriter hymn, 'Radio,' and concluding with 'Auld Lang Syne,' the Ms of the phone book sung by chorus. These are some of the strangest radioplays in existence. A format I feel is underused. The infusion of drama and comedy and open air to fill... oh, the possibilities. Towards A Total Poetry is of my personal favorites on Recital... exemplifying the core of what I love to publish." Includes 12-page booklet with essays and poems by the artists; Edition of 250.

HENDRICKS WITH PHILIP CORNER, GEOFFREY Stones : Dreams LP
Recital label head Sean McCann on Stones : Dreams: "The first audio document ever published by Fluxus artist Geoffrey Hendricks (1931-2018). There is a romanticism found in Geoffrey, that, in my mind, sets his work aside from his Fluxfriends. Known for his timeless sky paintings, applied to canvas, cars, clothes, and so on, the conceptual married the majestic. He was a master painter, whose work could have filled cathedral ceilings. Instead, he chartered his bow alongside George Maciunas, John Cage, Dick Higgins, etc. in the 1950s. Hendricks became a prominent member of Fluxus, shown in exhibitions around the world for over 60 years. In the 1970s, composer Charlie Morrow approached Hendricks about recording an album for the New Wilderness Audiographics cassette series. This became a 40-year dance of orbiting schedules and slipping dates. The sky aligned in 2014, and a recording session at Ear Up Studios in New York manifested. Geoffrey's connection to nature not only focused upwards at the sky, but always downwards to stones. 'Rock Music' consists of a box of rocks being cast across a room. Pounded on wood, soft and hard, the sonar-like snapping echo mapping the dimensions of the room. Small bells hover over the rubbing of stones humming to each other. You can tell that this was a therapeutic ritual he practiced for years, not merely an improvised recording concept. With the LP is a booklet that includes diaries of his stone collecting on Cape Breton island in 1973, beautifully infused with dream recollection. The cassette of 'Music for Sky Slate Wall' was discovered by chance earlier this year in the vast archive Hendricks left behind. It holds Geoff's close friend Philip Corner performing at an Emily Harvey Foundation exhibition in 1999. Corner responds to the Hendricks installation, interpreting the wall adorned with watercolors of day and night skies, grey slate, and a ladder hanging more paintings and golden ornaments. Philip Corner performs with prongs, Korean shaman cymbals, his voice, and a shoe. Their charming friendship can be heard in the interplay. This project was made possible by Geoff's widow, Sur Rodney (Sur), his children, Tyche and Bracken Hendricks, Philip Corner, and Charlie Morrow." Includes 16-page pamphlet with essays by Tyche Hendricks and Charlie Morrow, diaries and artworks by Geoffrey Hendricks. Edition of 220.

TAXIWARS Artificial Horizon CD
TaxiWars is back after a three-year hiatus with new album Artificial Horizon, released via Sdban Ultra. An intensive collaboration between dEUS frontman Tom Barman, saxophonist Robin Verheyen, bassist Nicolas Thys, and drummer Antoine Pierre, TaxiWars are a mix of lyricism, poetry, and jazz with a rock sensibility. Three years in the making, Artificial Horizon, is a metaphorical step forward from 2016's critically-acclaimed album Fever. Reinventing themselves, Barman and Verheyen came up with something very fresh and personal, tastefully evolving from a cubistic jazz sound to a more melodious direction. The band took their music to the next level adding depth to their compositions, clarity to the beats and efficiency to their overall sound. Artificial Horizon is high on experimentation and creativity and demonstrates a kaleidoscope of styles and sounds. Tracks, like album opener "Drop Shot", are sharp and on point, with a heavy sense of groove, while recent single "Sharp Practice", is an impulsive, energetic vibration that steams jazz with late eighties hip-hop beats. Title track "Artificial Horizon", is both beguiling and insistent with an ingrained punkiness that sets the band apart from the plush jazz scene, all thanks to Verheyen's punchy, melodic lines and Barman's haunting lyrics. "I wanted TaxiWars to be sharp, to the point, punky and trashy -- much like the band Morphine. Long solos were no-go," says Barman. The exquisite piano ballad "Irritated Love" complete with smoky sax is an example of the ease in which TaxiWars merge certain traditional elements of jazz with an indie approach to songwriting while tracks like "The Glare" and "Infinity Cove" display TaxiWars' love for jazz musicians such as Pharaoh Sanders, Archie Shepp, and Charles Mingus -- full of swing, pulse, and the urge to break out of the genre's confinements. CD version comes in digipack; includes booklet.

Created around the Ghent guitarist and composer Jo De Geest, the Belgian sextet draw on influences from jazz, rock and post-classical music, where minimalism, electronics, and a cinematic atmosphere characterize their instrumental music. Airships Are Organisms, released via Sdban Ultra, was produced by Jørgen Træen (Jaga Jazzist, Kaizers Orchestra, Hubro, Sondre Lerche). When it came to recording the album, John Ghost searched for a balance between the venturous, accessible and playful character of jazz music, in which John Ghost has its origins, and a carefully thought out selection process with the production, with a sharp eye and ear for detail. Seemingly simple earwigs are underpinned by driving undertones that inspire harmonic twists and a rhythmic and melodic stratification, that often results in a very danceable soundtrack. Tracks like 13-minute album opener "Deconstructing Hymns", keep a fine balance between moments of abstraction and repetition while recent single "Disfunctional Rabbits: The Disfunction" is an intoxicating, dreamy soundscape that alternates between balanced jazz fluctuations and space-like grooves. Elsewhere, the idiosyncratic "The Fallen Colony", spirals into a progressive narrative of experimentation and improvisation, a common thread throughout large parts of John Ghost's music, before the haunting "Drones For a Sunken Mothership", combines soaring bowed melodies and broken beats that is not only mesmeric but filled with breathtaking majesty.Formed in 2010, John Ghost were nominated for the "Young Jazz Talent" Award at the prestigious Gent Jazz Festival the same year, and a series of shows followed including the International Jazz Festival Middelburg, in the Netherlands. After a brief hiatus, they released their 2016 album For A Year They Slept, to critical acclaim across Belgium, and they have been busy in the studio once again, developing and honing their sound.

DE BEREN GIEREN Broensgebuzze EP 10"
Dutch-Belgian acoustic-electronic piano trio De Beren Gieren provide robust evidence that gold can still be mined from the union of piano, bass, and drums. Based on the compositions of pianist Fulco Ottervanger, the trio use the power of improvisation on the quest for a new form and create a multi-layered, kaleidoscopic work of art. The "Broensgebuzzes" are common themes in the work of De Beren Gieren. It is a small nostalgic piece of music, an invitation to long-gone memories. Each of these sound prints have appeared on previous albums.

Written and produced between 2002 and 2018, this record contains everything house music heads could wish for: Sweet chords and strings, topped with heavy 909s, plus a cheeky little vocal shot on "Satisfaction & Clarity". The title track sounds like a late-night drive with the top down. "Open Heart" is a sample-based house tune, heavy on the low end and super sweet on the tops. "In Search Of Darryl P" is the perfect track for the late hours, with never-ending trancey synths and euphoric strings.

TIRESIA Estatico LP
Stefano Ghittoni (former Peter Sellers & the Hollywood Party singer and electronic producer behind The Dining Rooms) and Bruno Dorella (OVO's deus ex-machina, Ronin and Bachi Da Pietra lead figure) recorded the debut of Tiresia during 2018, following the rare tape Inside / Outside released in 2017. Originally the compositions were designed for a double album, in which the length of the songs and the catatonic mood should have followed those of the box released for Bronson Recordings. An extensive pre-production has instead led to a move on a more "ecstatic" spirit, drying the songs literally ("less is more")! Ghittoni's touch remains recognizable, with his work on samples, loops, and synth lines. Dorella's guitar moves sinuously inside these plots, alternating actual themes with purely timbric sounds. The two also manage to be more cinematic, transcending the ambient sound of the very beginning and leaning to the more astral territories of Sun Ra and the shoegazing grandeur of My Bloody Valentine.

RABE, DENISE Manifesto 10"
True to her love for all things drone-y and psychoactive, Berlin-based DJ and producer Denise Rabe has you descending into rugged, hostile sonic terrains on this 10". Hosing off the loud, churning 909 kicks and passive-aggressive machine talk straightaway, "Manifesto" sets the tone for the warehouse-sized hammering to come. With floor-ready dynamics, the adrenaline booster "Don't Leave" offers a truly mind-bending tip. "Clouds" heads for quieter high-altitude spheres as the dubbed-out drums beat an off-kilter, left-field friendly pulse and ominous synth stabs and pads envelop the listener in entrancing textural folds and interplays.

HERETICAL SECT Rotting Cosmic Grief LP
Heretical Sect is a reclusive collective fixated on the physical and spiritual genocides of the Southwest. The Southwest; represented through a nostalgic lens of cowboy culture, rarely exposes the most brutal atrocities of American history. Churches chained shut and lit on fire with the congregation inside, severed limbs piled in the streets, and disease and slavery are burned into the memory of the landscape. These horrors are sonically juxtaposed against the natural beauty of the high desert. Expansive skies, deep canyons, painted red rocks, all witnesses to untold butchery and grief. Heretical Sect features members of other prominent Santa Fe, New Mexico bands, such as Predatory Light or Superstition. May all life learn to die.
