DJ Oonops presents Volume 2 of his extensive compilation covering genres from dub, jazz, funk, soul to beats and hip-hop, featuring pretty well-known artists as well as zooming newcomers. He spent more than one year to select artists from around the globe who reflect the sounds of his "Oonops Drops" broadcast on Brooklyn Radio (NYC). Be that jazzy beats or virtuoso live jazz drums, keys, and guitars from Japan by Kazumi Kaneda, RF, and 45, aka Swing-O, a first-time-on-vinyl dub remix by Great Britain's Coldcut or a brass cover version of Rihanna's "Stay" by Sly5thAve out of the US. Most of the tracks are exclusives or first time available on vinyl for this compilation, like the song "Measly Peace" by Magic In Trees out of Nashville, German beatmaker Twit One with an ill Jazz instrumental or London based rapper and singer Amy Tru featuring Nubya Garcia. Also you're gonna hear a unique and rump-shaking cover version of Blackstreet's "No Diggity" by T Bird & The Breaks, John Turell's powerful voice over some heavy beats by Soopasoul, Kinny with a catchy tune, Igor Zhukovsky from The Soul Surfers & MRR Drumetrics with an exclusive, pumping psychedelic drum track and Schemes from Montreal who take all the credits at the moment from the web by Vice, Okayplayer, Music Is My Sanctuary and many more. For the artwork, Oonops collaborated once again with San Francisco based artist Lindsey Kustusch who mirrored the atmosphere of New York City on point with her oil painted artwork. Be sure to get your hands on this limited peace of work before it's gone like Volume 1. Also features Ce'Cile & Toddla T, Manasseh, Bird Moves, Amy True, and Nubya Garcia. WANUBALE Phosphenes CD
Wanubalé -- nine guys from Berlin, inspired by the city's fresh jazz scene and distinct club culture. Wanubalé met at school. Five of the nine in the band went to the same musical high school in Berlin. Heavy influences from jazz, neo soul, and funk shape their compositions. However, electronic sounds are just as important to Wanubalé. All of the nine are in their early twenties. All of them are into dub, bass music, and broken beats. And several members are DJs, as well. The Wanubalés are first-rate musicians. They tend to take their time writing arrangements, yet they are careful not to overly emphasize their jazz skills. Songwriting is a collaborative affair; everything is developed organically. Just like the band name, which dates back to the days of fooling around in the schoolyard, playing with syllables ("nuba" came first). Sound was crucial. Some say "Wanubalé" means "brother" in Swahili. Wanubalé: four horns, two drummers, guitar, bass, keyboards. Nine musicians with a knack for funky breaks, mighty brass sounds, and great melodies. The musicians don't hide their influences: Snarky Puppy, Fat Freddy's Drop, plus younger acts like Hiatus Kaiyote. But Wanubalé do their own thing. Wanubalé: four horns, two drummers, guitar, bass, keyboards. Nine musicians with a knack for funky breaks, mighty brass sounds and great melodies. All songs are written, produced, and arranged by Wanubalé. Recorded at Jazzanova Studio, Berlin.

MONTGOMERY & EMMA JOHNSTON, ROY After Nietzsche LP
New album by New Zealand composer and guitarist Roy Montgomery in close collaboration with Emma Johnston. After Nietzsche is a response to Nietzsche's assertion in Twilight of the Idols (1889) that "Without music, life would be a mistake." Roy Montgomery and Emma Johnston recast this as "Life is a mistake set to music" and they take issue with one of Nietzsche's principal tenets concerning fate. After Nietzsche is in a way the sister-album to 2018's Suffuse, where Montgomery composes songs for guest vocalists. Only this time it's in close partnership with Emma Johnston. Montgomery's distinctive, interweaving guitar play is set as background for Emma Johnston's angelic vocals and experimentations. Swimming through the four tracks of the album, it's surprising to notice how different they are. The opening track could have been plucked from one of Montgomery's '80s projects, while the rest of the A side takes you into more shadowy territory. "Realm Of The Senses" with its slow strumming and echoing vocals evokes Grouper, and the title track, with dramatic vocals and strings, cleverly builds up to a climax that never happens. The last song clocking in at just over twenty minutes is a post-postmodern duet between the two musicians in a dark philosophical mood. Included insert with lyrics; Calligraphy by Liz Harris (Grouper); Cover by Trudi Cameron. Mastering by Kris Delacourt. Edition of 500.Roy Montgomery is a composer, guitarist, and lecturer from Christchurch, New Zealand. Montgomery's mostly instrumental solo works have elements of post-rock, lo-fi, folk, and avant-garde experimentation. His signature sound might be described as atmospheric or cinematic, often featuring complex layers of chiming, echoing and/or droning guitar phrases. He is currently head of the Environmental Management department at Lincoln University in New Zealand. Montgomery has played in several New Zealand bands since 1980, most notably The Pin Group, Dadamah, Dissolve, and Hash Jar Tempo. He has also released solo albums on labels including Kranky and Drunken Fish.Emma Johnston, a classically trained singer, she has developed a practice that explores experimental voice in theater. This led to her MA and then PhD theses, which explore her work in the context of experimental voice in avant-garde performance. Emma has also worked as a singer and actor with Silencio Ensemble, the Christchurch Symphony, and Corrupt Productions, and has premiered vocal works by composers Chris Reddington and Gao Ping. Alongside her ongoing Free Theatre work, she enjoys collaborating with artists such as Reuben Derrick and Roy Montgomery on a diversity of projects.

OPERATING THEATRE Miss Mauger LP
Dublin's All City Records continue their deep dive into early Irish electronica, jazz, rock, and experimental music with the latest release on the AllChival imprint. A lost gem from 1983, Miss Mauger is the debut LP of Operating Theatre, a little-known proto synth-pop act and experimental theater group led by avant-garde composer Roger Doyle. Featuring the vocals of future Hollywood actress Olwen Fouéré alongside pulsing synths, brass, a vocoder, and the electro acoustic production talents of Doyle himself, it's the first time a Fairlight sampler was used in an Irish studio setting and gives a prescient but alternative take on the new wave sound that came to dominate the charts soon after. Not quite pop nor full-blown electronica, Miss Mauger is a rare creature in the pantheon of Irish experimental music, largely ignored and misunderstood when it was first released, it's now getting the full reissue treatment it deserves -- with two extra tracks thrown in for good measure: "Austrian", which was originally release as an A-side by CBS records in 1981 and "Sir Geoffrey", another recording from that era by the short-lived group. Operating Theatre's short existence as a recording group fizzled out after the act were signed to U2's embryonic Mother label. Only one more vinyl release followed and the group went their separate ways apart from sporadic collaborations. Doyle, the musical maverick at the heart of the act, continues to produce to this day and has released 30 albums. Fouéré, who provided the vocals and a theatric element to the group (an almost essential part of any early '80s synth act) went on to a successful movie career that has recently seen her appear in major box office productions like Mandy (2018) and Fantastic Beasts (2018). This album is a heady snapshot of some early pop explorations by one of the great modern composers and a rare insight into an underground new wave sound that was bubbling up through the Irish capital during the late '70s and early '80s. Cut from the same DIY or almost post punk cloth as our recent reissues of Stano and Michael O'Shea, this is another example of a maverick artist producing largely instrumental work far removed from the mainstream pop industry or what little of it existed in the country at the time. Includes extended liner notes.

GAZELLE TWIN Pastoral (Color Vinyl) LP
Color vinyl version. The new album by Gazelle Twin exhumes England's rotten past and shines a torch over its ever-darkening present. Told through a troupe of multi-gender voices, in vernaculars old and new; from the shrill echo of folksong to tabloid-tinged jaunts, the artist presents the notion that "there is horror in every idyll, and danger lurking beyond the 'quaint'." Four years in the making, this is her first major release since her widely acclaimed LP Unflesh (2014) and Kingdom Come (2017). As its sole creator, Gazelle Twin 'The Composer, Musician and Producer' has crafted an album overflowing with a frenzy of traditional and contemporary musical tropes; from early music instrumentation -- the harpsichord and the humble recorder, fed through myriad electronics -- to the compelling, ritualistic application of found sample-looping. Beyond Elizabeth Bernholz's signature choral-infusions, here reverberating like a warped Sunday Service, there are even shades of '90s house and the once-thriving rural rave scene, albeit recalled as a watery, second-hand memory. Set against a verdant backdrop of hedgerows and steeples, Gazelle Twin constructs an eccentric and commanding visual embodiment of all-of-the-above -- a costume fit for a court Jester of the 21st Century. The colors of Neo-Nationalism. Coke cans, and danger. "It" (not "she") hints at folkloric traditions with a footy mascot twist. The "Ye Olde" and "The Everyman" of the English cliché. Brandishing a sneer and a hobby horse. A riddle and a recorder.

CROOK WITH THE RENDERERS, BRIAN This World Just Eats Me Up Alive LP
"While recording a group of songs that would end up being part of This World Just Eats Me Up Alive, Brian Crook took a break outside with his bandmates. A small girl nearby ran up to a woman saying 'Mommy, mommy! There's a vampire here!' The mother asked how the girl knew it was a vampire, and the girl said, 'He talks like this,' and proceeded to do a growling impression of a New Zealand accent. At the time, Brian was in a dark suit and had super long hair, and was playing badminton... Crook's new solo album comprises eight years of recording, so perhaps his undead appearance is not surprising; it comprises a span of inspiration that seems almost vampiric, with themes suggested by Greek mythology, a favorite 1960s author, to the abstract electronics of Aphex Twin and Arca as influences. The album came together in parts, slowly assembled with various contributors and recording locations, the earliest trace having lyrical origins from 1991, and was done during sessions for The Terminals, Crook's other band (you can also add NZ legends Scorched Earth Policy and Flies Inside The Sun to that list). A near decade provides a lot of material for reflective songwriting. In Crook's revelations about life in New Zealand and his tenebrous lyrical style there is more than a touch of comedy, albeit of a blackly humorous, 'South Island New Zealand' nature. The lyrics and music come from a similar place as New Zealand painters Bill Hammond and Tony de Latour, evoking a kind of ceremonial primitivism."

All releases have been remastered from the original tapes by Bernie Grundman Mastering Studios. PAL format DVD (Region/Zone: 0).Catherine Ringer and Frédéric Chichin met and formed an amazing band nearly 40 years ago. The subsequent music they made as Les Rita Mitsouko has remained steadfastly popular and relevant ever since. Neither fashions nor trends, nor Fred's tragic, untimely death in 2007, have blunted the sonic brio of this iconic duo. Always visually strong, mixing up humor and gravitas, madness and sweet derision, their rich, adventurous, modern discography, both joyfully experimental and commercially viable, has traversed the ages with impunity. For the uninitiated, here is a brief résumé of their discography and career: In 1979, multi-instrumentalists Catherine and Fred met on the set of the Marc'O punk opera Flashes Rouges in the edgy Montreuil suburb of Paris. They hit it off immediately and soon embarked on a number of faltering, now forgotten groups with other musicians, before consolidating their true power as a duo. 1984 saw the release of their debut album Rita Mitsouko, recorded with Krautrock producer Conny Plank. It was the fourth single release, "Marcia Baila", that first grabbed everyone's attention, selling over a million copies and becoming one of the most played songs in French broadcasting history. They were suddenly superstars in a parallel universe, as big in France as Duran Duran or Frankie Goes To Hollywood were in the UK, though across a slender stretch of water the Brits remained largely impervious to their charms. It should be noted that not all anglophones were immune to their collective genius: Sparks, Iggy Pop, and Serj Tankian of System of a Down are some of the giants of alternative rock who've collaborated with them over the years.

HAINO/JIM O'ROURKE/OREN AMBARCHI, KEIJI In the past only geniuses were capable of staging the perfect crime (also known as a revolution) Today anybody can accomplish their aims... CD
Full title: In the past only geniuses were capable of staging the perfect crime (also known as a revolution) Today anybody can accomplish their aims with the push of the button. For its 50th release, Black Truffle presents the ninth album from one of the label's core ensembles, the power trio of Keiji Haino, Jim O'Rourke, and Oren Ambarchi. Drawn from a November 2015 performance at Tokyo's now-defunct SuperDeluxe, the record's opening piece drops us immediately into the maelstrom, abruptly cutting into an extended episode of Ambarchi's pummeling drums, O'Rourke's fuzzed-out six-string bass, and Haino's roaring guitar and electronics. Eventually settling into a hypnotic bass and drum groove over which Haino unleashes some almost Ray Russell-eque skittering atonal screech, these opening 13 minutes act as a potent reminder of the trio's power. Alongside showcasing the steady development of a unique language for the guitar-bass-drums power trio, the group's succession of releases over the last decade has demonstrated a constant experimentation with new instruments, which continues here with O'Rourke use of Hammond organ (played at the same time as his roaming, sometimes knotty basslines). On the album's second piece, the organ plays a key role, furnishing a harmonically rich shimmer over O'Rourke's angular six-string bass chords, Haino's distant, chirping electronics and Ambarchi's crisp cymbal work; arriving somewhere halfway between Albert Marcoeur and Terje Rypdal, this piece is undoubtedly a highlight in the trio's catalog so far. The second and third sides are slow-burning, multi-part epics that range from spacious reflection to furious tumult. Where the trio's previous double-LP set -- This Dazzling, Genuine "Difference" Now Where Shall It Go? (BT 030LP, 2017) -- was primarily instrumental in focus, here you find Haino's voice taking the spotlight on the expansive third side, intoning, wailing. and exhorting in Japanese and English over a backdrop that moves from hushed bass and organ atmospherics to rolling toms and cymbal crashes before arriving at an ecstatic finale of searing guitar, tumbling drums and reverb-saturated bass. The fourth side returns to the hypnotic grooves of the opening piece, fixing on a relentless riff and riding it into oblivion under Haino's roaming psychedelic soloing and jagged chordal slashes. Cover image by Traianos Pakioufakis; Live action pics by Ujin Matsuo. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering. LP design by Lasse Marhaug; gatefold sleeve.

REIDY, JULIA In Real Life LP
Black Truffle present In Real Life, the latest in a flurry of releases from Berlin-based guitarist and composer Julia Reidy. Having drawn acclaim for solo performances on 12-string acoustic guitar that bridge microtonality, "American primitive" stylings, and classic minimalism, Reidy's recent releases have utilized an increasingly broad sonic palette, fleshing out guitar-based composition with electronics, field recordings, and -- most strikingly -- heavily auto-tuned vocals. On In Real Life, Reidy pushes one step further, crafting an epic LP-length suite that moves from abstracted song to lush electronics and explorations in contemporary musique concrete. Beginning with a passage of eerie electronics and creaking percussive interjections, Reidy's heavily auto-tuned voice quickly takes center stage. Surrounded by explosions of electric guitar and synthesized arpeggios, the auto-tuned voice delivers a melancholic ode, bringing together poetic images to reflect on the instability of experience and mutability of identity in a contemporary world saturated by digital technology. This concern with the unsettled relationship between the physical and digital is reflected musically by the constantly shifts in emphasis between Reidy's physically demanding guitar-picking and the various forms of synthesis deployed. Similarly, the dynamic imagery of cutting, shattering, and "racing streams" present in Reidy's lyrics also serves to characterize the structure of In Real Life, which ceaselessly shifts between distinct episodes. The song-based opening, long sequences of frenetic 12-string guitar shadowed and eventually overtaken by synth tones, passages of delicate chiming harmonics, electro-acoustic cut-ups -- each flows seamlessly into the next, often recurring throughout the record's duration, which lingers over interstitial moments between these episodes. Artwork by Suze Whaites; LP design by Lasse Marhaug. Mixed and mastered by Joe Talia at Good Mixture, Tokyo. Vinyl cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin.

HENNIES, SARAH Reservoir 1 CD
Black Truffle present Reservoir 1: Preservation, a gorgeous piece by American composer/percussionist Sarah Hennies. Sarah's work explores a variety of musical, sociopolitical, and psychological issues including queer and trans identity, love, intimacy, psychoacoustics, and percussion. The Reservoirs are a series of three one-hour pieces based on the relationship between the conscious and unconscious human mind. Jung and Freud described the unconscious mind as a reservoir, a repository for memories that we don't readily need access to, yet are kept forever somewhere in our minds. Specifically, Freud believed that one function of the unconscious mind is to store traumatic memories, filed away so that we don't have to confront them every day. The conscious mind has no direct access to the unconscious, yet the unconscious is a constant yet mysterious presence in our lives. Reservoir 1: Preservation is scored for piano and three percussionists, performed by Phillip Bush and Meridian, the long-running experiment in percussion, improvisation, and interpersonal relationships that includes Tim Feeney, Sarah Hennies, and Greg Stuart. In Preservation the piano functions as a constant, pervasive, but almost subliminal murmur amid the percussion playing that cycles through a variety of timbral and gestural areas, including gentle droning, frenetic scraping, and bricks violently dropped into metal buckets. The percussion group never interacts with or responds to the piano, while the piano subtly absorbs aspects of the trio. Preservation was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Jeff Francis at the University of South Carolina and performed by Meridian: Tim Feeney, Sarah Hennies, Greg Stuart (percussion), and Phillip Bush (piano). CD digipak with design by Lasse Marhaug; Cover photo from Abby Grace Drake's photo series, Shopping Carts of Southside Ithaca.

WATERS, PATTY Live CD
Patty Waters is a visionary avant-garde vocalist and composer, best known for her groundbreaking 1960s recordings for the legendary free jazz label ESP-Disk. Captivated by the music of Billie Holiday, she sang with Bill Evans, Charlie Mingus, Chick Corea, and Herbie Hancock before coming to the attention of Albert Ayler, who introduced her to ESP-Disk's Bernard Stollman. The rest is history. Recorded with pianist Burton Greene, Waters' haunting 1966 debut Sings (ESPDISK 1025CD) juxtaposes a side of hushed self-composed jazz ballad miniatures with an iconoclastic take on the standard "Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair". Sharing Ayler's affinity for the deconstruction of folk idioms, Waters dismantles the tune through a series of anguished wails, moans, whispers, and screams that cemented her reputation as a vocal innovator, predating the extended techniques of Yoko Ono, Joan La Barbara, and Linda Sharrock, and cited as a direct influence to Diamanda Galas and Patti Smith's own freeform vocal excursions. The mythic side-long exposition stands as one of the 20th century's most harrowing expressions of madness and grief, its incantatory mutilation of the word "black" into a full-spectrum monochrome resounding with a particular potency at a time when battles for civil rights were erupting across the country. After recording a second ESP-Disk album in 1996 (ESPDISK 1055CD/LP), Waters disappeared from the music scene, moving from New York to California to raise her son. Her Blank Forms concert on April 5th, 2018 -- with original pianist Burton Greene as well as bassist Mario Pavone and percussionist Barry Altschul, both veterans of Paul Bley's ensembles -- was Waters' first New York appearance since 2003. Dedicated to Cecil Taylor, who had passed away moments before she took the stage, Live preserves the mournful tension that was in the air that night. Her first new release on vinyl since 1966's College Tour, the record divides the session in the spirit of her debut. Side A features a set of desolate ballads, including Waters' own classic "Moon, Don't Come Up Tonight", while the B-side puts into stark relief the fact that the fight for civil rights that Waters invoked over 50 years ago is far from over. Beginning with her rendition of "Strange Fruit", a 1937 song written in protest of black lynching and American racism, the suite's form-bending contortions also features the second-ever recording of Waters' original, exceptional lyrical take on Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman."

TELEFON TEL AVIV Immolate Yourself LP
2019 repress on vinyl. This is the third full-length album by Chicago's Telefon Tel Aviv (Joshua Eustis and Charles Cooper), and their first for BPitch Control. Immolate Yourself unites ten tracks with the aim to give the term "electro-pop" a new definition for the year 2009. Although each track has its own story to tell, together they paint a bigger picture that encapsulates the Telefon Tel Aviv sound. Arguably the album's standout track "Helen of Troy" -- a driving, moody and muddled piece, full of '80s aesthetics, vintage synths and low, romantic vocals -- was in fact the last track to be finished, and in a way, marked the climax and formed the basis of the whole work. With this release, Telefon Tel Aviv make a statement that combines popular dance music with their own darker reflections on the electronic sound universe.

REV, MARTIN Cheyenne LP
LP version. Bureau B present a reissue of Martin Rev's Cheyenne, originally released in 1991. The sphere of Martin Rev's influence and the relevance of his music may well be related to the fact that he was one of the first artists who succeeded in grasping the abstraction of electronic music, infusing it with a sense of immediacy built on raw energy. Whilst the likes of La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Kraftwerk were busy digging in the electronic music garden, Martin Rev found inspiration in the streets of New York. Rev's music is informed by characteristic influences of the city, a place where doo-wop harmonies intermingle with the hiss and hum of the metropolis, dissolving into a collage of noise. So it is that dreamy, chiming melodies blur into ominous whirrs and drones emanating from rhythm machines and layers of distorted synthesizer. This polarity between convergence and alienation describes something deeply American, as reflected in the track names and the cover image of a rodeo rider: "The idea came from the way the tracks sounded as instrumentals. They took on a different visually descriptive dimension, even more so in combination. The visualization was an immediate soundscape of the American landscape. That's where the titles and cover came from." Many of the pieces found on Cheyenne can be traced back to the sessions for the second Suicide album Alan Vega / Martin Rev (1980) which was produced by Ric Ocasek, singer for The Cars. Almost a decade passed before Martin Rev got around to editing and developing the material. "Most of the album was recorded in 1980, but the remaining few tracks from 1988 into the early '90s. The '80s tracks all went under a concerted editing process, to make them work for me even better as instrumentals. I didn't get around to that until there was an offer to release them, which was in the early 90's as well." Indeed, Cheyenne plays out like a rural, yet intense road movie, crossing a landscape rich in beauty and contradictions.

Gatefold; green vinyl. "Formed in 1984, Dinosaur Jr carved a singular path through the latter half of the 1980s, issuing three highly influential albums in the process before finding a home with Sire Records, who issued Green Mind in 1991 as the alternative American rock scene the band had long been part of exploded globally. Produced by a stripped down line-up of the group (in fact, J Mascis himself plays almost everything), the album and Sire's international reach took Dinosaur Jr's reputation to a new level, aided by the singles 'The Wagon' and 'Whatever's Cool With Me', a non-album EP of new material and live recordings, all of which are included here. Critically lauded on release, Green Mind remains one of the band's strongest collections, and a firm fan favorite. Collected together here for the first time with related singles, B-sides and live recordings, and accompanied by in-depth sleevenotes from Mojo's Keith Cameron (based on recent and exclusive interviews with J Mascis), this edition provides a thorough snapshot of the band at a period when all eyes were on American guitar groups, many of whom owed their existence to Dinosaur Jr."

TELESCOPES, THE Stone Tape CD
The tenth album from The Telescopes is full of wall-to-wall psychedelic drones, swaying chants, trance-inducing shoegaze, and "suspended-in-space magnificence" (Julian Cope). Stone Tape is a concept album inspired by "Stone Tape Theory" (or "residual haunting"), theorized by Thomas Charles Lethbridge in 1961. The archaeologist, parapsychologist, and explorer developed the idea that inanimate materials can absorb energy from living beings, and that this mental electrical energy, released during emotional or traumatic events, could somehow be "stored" in such materials and "reproduced" under certain conditions. The hypothesis has been known as "Stone Tape Theory" since the cult 1972 TV screenplay Stone Tape by Nigel Neale. Recorded in Powderhorn Minneapolis, The Vicarage, West Yorkshire, and The Experimental Health Unit. Originally released as a limited-edition LP by Italian publishing house Yard Press in 2017 (YP 001LP), this CD edition contains a bonus 14-minute version of the track "The Living Things", recorded in Switzerland in 2018. Digipak with new artwork by Stephen Lawrie. Mastered by Martin Bowes at The Cage. Layout by Abby Helasdottir.

AAARON Cosmic Soul EP 12"
Aaaron continues his journey through mystic synthesis with his fifth EP for Connected, Cosmic Soul EP. On "Cosmic Soul", a rhythm section playing robotic funk against an esoteric drone meets a melancholic piano refrain and pleading vocal monotones that go dubwise. Synthetic textures reminiscent of Blade Runner 2049 form a backdrop for a skeletal drum figure on "Mercy", as soft Kraftwerk-like notes filter in-and-out. Imagine a classical symphony based on two or three chords, revolving and hypnotizing, set against a drumscape of toms and unnaturally pitched and distorted snares. You've got "It's Not Over".

HIDALGO, JUAN Rrose Selavy LP
Discos Transgénero present an official reissue of Juan Hidalgo's Rrose Sélavy, originally released by Cramps Records in 1977. Juan Hidalgo (1927-2018) was born in Las Palmas, Canary Islands. He studied composition and piano in Spain and later in Paris and Geneva. He moved to Milano in 1956 where he has developed most of his musical career. He collaborated during his career with people like Marchetti, John Cage, or Bruno Maderna. Rrose Sélavy is a unique queer-sound-art piece that claims for revision of the role of the gender in the society through the musical language. Juan Hidalgo played a leading role in definitively abandoning the traditional avant-garde musical research -- the problem of music as sound -- to devote himself to the musical fact as a search for a language that is creative and critical at the same time. Beyond the abstract notion that the language can be a source of indoctrination, words and language play an important role in the social construction of gender. The musical language also marks and generates a very particular type of social body and listening. Precisely, a change in the syntactic form of sounds would trigger a new listening and a new understanding of the world of sound that surrounds us. Silence and noise are not only two opposite poles within music, but also at a social level. Rrose Sélavy begins with a celesta solo. A piece based on the relentless repetition of the first five notes of the scale of C major, but without predictable order, without syntactic logic between them, and without any series of tonal hierarchies between them. Since this hierarchy is missing, there is neither beginning nor end; the duet's piano, while remaining within that narrow range of pitch, expands the ground to other octaves. From the trio to the final sextet, the inclusion of new sonorities adds nuances and dimensions to what, at first, looked like simple children's music. This is a truly "rare" example in form and content in the arts scene, despite the stumbling block that has seemed to be for decades for the history and historiography of traditional style, determined to evaluate movements, concepts, and actions, is perceived nowadays, once again and as always, as a gradual, free and liberating flow. Includes the original inner notes by Daniel Charles in addition with notes from Julio Pérez and Eloy Palazón. Edition of 500.

LAFIA, JOHN J. 1980-1985 2LP
Excellent compilation LP with works by LA avant-garde composer John Lafia. Active in Los Angeles' 1980-1986 underground music scene, John Lafia is best known for the hypnotic album Prayers, released through Barry Craig's influential, cassette-only label Trance Port Tapes in 1984. "Life Is Short", "A Promise", "Dream", "Hidden Things", "Spaghetti Western", and "Escape" come from that release. This compilation also features tracks from subsequent Trance Port releases: L.A. Mantra II's "Queen Of The Nile" (1984) and Phantom Takes' "The Moth" (1984). John's "Odyssey Girls" appeared on the seminal 1983 spoken word LP, English As A Second Language. "The Confession", a collaboration with legendary producer Ethan James, was released on 1986's LP, Voices From North America. While recording this music, Hollywood-based John also dreamt of making his own films. To support himself, he intermittently crewed on low-budget movies, including fellow UCLA Film School alumni, Alex Cox's infamous Repo Man (1984). Cinematic influence comes to the fore in titles such as, "Spaghetti Western", "Queen Of The Nile", "Escape", and "Hidden Things". Working alone endlessly in his home studio, John used the recording environment as a launching pad for exploring his uncensored psyche's furthest dimensions. Hours of repetitive rhythms often transported him into trance-like states. Tracks "Propaganda" and "Art Of The Jungle" exemplify this technique. Others -- "4AM", "Doubt", and "Montgomery Park" -- are miniature psychodramas (replete with three-act structures). Songs "Life Is Short" and "Dream" grapple with life's fragile and unknowable essence. "The Moth", "Fourth Of July", and "SOS", are sonic journeys into trance-like repetition. This intensely personal music never intended to "find" an audience; it was a means in and of itself. Its decades-later rebirth in this compilation is a joyous surprise. Remastered at Alb-Estudi. Lacquer Cut at Dubplates & Mastering. Gatefold sleeve; edition of 400.

MARNIE Songs Hurt Me LP
Discos Transgénero present a reissue of the Marnie Weber's classic first solo LP, Songs Hurt Me, originally released in 1989. This seminal record was an important part of the Los Angeles post-punk performative art rock scene. Brooding synthesizers, heavy bass, strange melodies, and poetic lyrics lead you through an industrial journey. These songs were born from Weber's earliest performance art characters: a deer, an old woman, a manic courtesan, and a butterfly. Songs Hurt Me was originally co-produced by Phillip Drucker, AKA Jackson Del Ray of Savage Republic and 17 Pygmies fame. Marnie is a pioneer in art rock from the '80s in Los Angeles. She emerged early in the music scene as the bass player in the Party Boys, a formative and important Los Angeles post-punk downtown art scene band. During this period, the Party Boys performed shows with Minutemen, Savage Republic, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fourwaycross, The Blue Daisies, Perry Farrell's first band Psi Com, Camper Van Beethoven, and many more. Bruce Licher of Independent Project Records, whom Marnie met in art school, released the first Party Boys record. After performing with the Party Boys, Marnie went on to become a noted solo performative art musician in her own right. She has released five solo records and numerous group album releases. As a visual artist Marnie created the cover of Sonic Youth's A Thousand Leaves album --interesting to note Marnie is the hamster girl on the cover. She also designed posters for Sonic Youth and did a co-release of her second album with Thurston Moore on his label Ecstatic Peace. Expanding from her musical roots, Marnie exhibits artwork, films, sculptures, collages, sound installations, and costumes internationally in museums and galleries. She has had two extensive survey exhibitions of her artwork. Songs Hurt Me was remastered by Mark Wheaton at Catasonic Studios Los Angeles using the original tapes for an unprecedented restoration of this historic album. A pivotal yet obscure counter-culture music. Edition of 400.

After appearing as part of various ensembles on the label, Ariha Brass Quartet and Johnny Kafta Anti-Vegetarian Orchestra, Kerbaj finally lands a solo outfit of his own onto the Discrepant dancefloor of misdemeanor. 14 years after his first (and only) solo album Brt Vrt Zrt Krt (Al Maslakh, 2005), Mazen returns with a series of loud oozes (entirely) of his own with not one but two(!) solo albums of prepared trumpet that further cement his international position as a serial trumpet botherer. Showcasing his very own and singular arsenal of squawks, cackles, howls and squeals the notion of being transported to a luring mutant underwater alien community is only occasionally dispelled with the sporadic passages of fluctuating tones and pulsations, like a restful humpback whale puffing on a hookah pipe at the ocean's deep end. Mazen pulls out all the proverbial stops here, displaying a unique mastering of the instrument and its improbable add-ons creating various vignette like episodes rich in texture and variations -- unlike anything else out there -- not that you'd knew anyway. Where Vol. 2.1 shows an astounding use of the instrument without recurring to cuts, overdubs, or electronics, Vol. 2.2 raises (or shatters) the bar with its intentional use of everything Vol. 2.1 was denied. And Mazen is right about advising his listeners, the sounds emitted on each record are beyond the limits of believable. Either he is using tricks or just prepared techniques the results go far beyond the reach of a normal or casual listener. Listen to the albums back-to-back and you'll understand.

KERBAJ, MAZEN Trumpet Solo Vol. 2.2: Cuts, Overdubbing, Use of Electronics LP
Comic book artist, graphic designer and free jazz improviser are only some of the many talents from Beirut born Mazen Kerbaj. After appearing as part of various ensembles on the label, Ariha Brass Quartet and Johnny Kafta Anti-Vegetarian Orchestra, Kerbaj finally lands a solo outfit of his own onto the Discrepant dancefloor of insubordination. 14 years after his first (and only) solo album Brt Vrt Zrt Krt (Al Maslakh, 2005) Mazen returns with a series of subtle compositions of his own with not one but two(!) solo albums of prepared trumpet that further cement his international position as a serial trumpet botherer. Whilst Vol. 2.1 showcases his (almost) (un)familiar arsenal of squawks, cackles, howls and squeals, Vol. 2.2 goes deep into the nether regions of waltzing drones and bell tweaks so deep that would make most cetaceans lose their concentration. The notion of being transported to a luring mutant underwater alien community is still present on these long(er) trips with the added meditative pieces being occasionally pierced by noise creepers, nothing is what you want or expect and that's the way it should be. If Vol. 2.1 is the classic follow up LP, this one is the beast from the deep, it comes surging and screeching from a deep oceanic sink hole, only to hypnotize you with perverted dance moves before diving back into the sinking, wettest and darkest cave in the world. Vol. 2.2 is a summons album; it shatters any bar there was with its intentional use of everything Vol. 2.1 was denied. It grabs you by wherever available way and it only releases you when you're ready to listen to it again. Listen to both albums back-to-back, in no particular order and you'll know that there's nothing you can do but come back to it like a doped-up seal stranded in a phantom island -- appearing and disappearing as the music dictates it to.

"Masochism is cruel because, in subverting the model, it imposes it with exaggerated severity..." --Amy IrelandFlorian Hecker's latest CD release continues his work with computational techniques for analysis and re-synthesis. In Inspection II, you hear the progressive reconstruction of original source material using algorithms based upon human hearing and designed to capture timbral characteristics of sound. As the source is iteratively extracted from featureless noise, a complex ongoing dialogue commences between formal model and empirical experience of sound. Like Charon, the boatman who ferries souls of the dead across the styx, Inspection II crosses perpetually from one bank to the other: from the formal anticipations of analysis to the unexpected artefacts of synthesis. In Robin Mackay's libretto, recited by a synthetic voice, this inspective dialogue is transferred to the introspective psychoanalytic situation, where the continual re-narration of the self creates further disturbances and transformations -- to attain a definitive image of oneself would be to face one's own death. As discussed in Amy Ireland's essay "Beside a Cold Statue" commissioned for the CD sleeve notes, this process, whose symptomatology is recognizably that of masochism, sees the coldness of the formal model subverted as Hecker's continual re-synthesis delivers up a series of harsh, tantalizing, and bewildering textures and timbres. 16-page booklet. Written and produced by Florian Hecker, 2016-17. Synthetic Voice: Christophe Veaux, CSTR, The University of Edinburgh. Liner notes: Amy Ireland. Mastering: Rashad Becker."Inspection II is a very particular composition which deserves a privileged position not only in relation to attempts to exhaust and remove the unknown borders of the sonic universe, but also among the various endeavors of Expanded Psychoanalysis. By transcending the unique authority of Freudian discourse, by alienating and synthesizing the dialogue of analyst and analysand, by penetrating the realm of that babble that is the obvious origin of human language and communication, designated by Jacques Lacan as lalangue, Inspection II discloses a space beyond representation, and hence beyond sense, intelligibility and significance. In order to imagine the inconceivable and unattainable unconscious of an apparently amorphous real that lies outside the structured network of reality with its mediating instances of the imaginary and symbolic orders, Florian Hecker's project suggests an all-pervading realm of sounds and noises considered as one of the purest utterances of existence. Closing the screen of the cerebral computer, psychoanalysis emerges as the hard disk's synaptic music, echoing the big bang of our psychic genesis." --August Ruhs (Psychiatrist, Psychoanalyst, University of Vienna)

DURHAILAY & DAVID EDREN, JATINDER SINGH Tea Notes LP
Jatinder Singh Durhailay and David Edren released Tea Notes as a cassette back in April of 2018. London-based Jatinder Singh Durhailay is a painter and student of Indian Classical music. He has trained in both the sitar and the Hindi singing technique, Dhrupad. He also plays two traditional Sikh instruments; the bowed, stringed Dilruba and Taus. Poetic Pastel Press issued his solo debut, The Last Ballad Of Mardana, in 2017. David Edren's expertise lies with machines and modular synthesis. His kosmische and new age-inspired electronics have featured on numerous cassettes, and compilations, produced for imprints from the current Belgian underground, such as JJ Funhouse, Social Harmony, and Ultra Eczema. These recordings appearing, since the turn of the millennium, either under his own name, or the moniker DSR Lines. Jatinder and David's collaboration, Tea Notes, is a celebration, a meditation, on both the beverage, and the communal time-shared imbibing. The coming together to partake in its ritual. Each of the six tracks represents a different infusion. The opening piece is a tribute to semi-oxidized "Oolong", from China's Wuyi Mountains, with hammered dulcimer-like glissando. Gongs shimmering, gently crashing, as if signaling a change in the weather. A calm of thin, stretched synths and Ai angels introduces "Tulsi" from India. The Holy Basil of Hinduism, used in the worship of Vishnu, Krishna, and Rama. A traditional herb of Ayurveda and Siddha medicine. Automated arpeggiated sequences raising a vibrating wall of hallucinatory sound. "Ceylon" is a modern twist on the classical raga. Serving to tell the story of a tea smuggled into Sri Lanka in the 19th century. Plants stolen from South West China, where the brew had been enjoyed since the days of the Shang Dynasty (1766 to 1122 BC). Muted organ and sleepy, treated sine wave microtones describe "Kava", the Polynesian fireweed root, whose extract serves as both sedative and euphoriant. "Shincha" are the first young leaves of the season. Picked in Southern Japan and steamed to prevent oxidization, retain their flavor and green/gold color. Melodies treated with subtle sustain and delay denote "Pu-Her", from the Yunnan province. The only truly fermented black tea -- made distinctive by the action of bacteria, molds, and yeasts. Recorded January to March 2018 in Antwerpen and London. Mastered and cut by Anne Taegert at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Artwork by Victor Robyn.

DERBYSHIRE, DELIA The Dreams LP
Repressed. Delia Derbyshire is one of the most innovative electronic musicians of the 20th century. She is best known for her pioneering work for the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, and for composing the classic theme song for the original Doctor Who, believed to be the earliest "electronic" theme song in television history. A brilliant composer and one of the few women operating in the early era of electronic music. In the early '60s, she collaborated with the British artist and playwright Barry Bermange for the BBC's Third Programme to produce four "Inventions for Radio", a collage of people describing their dreams, set to a background of electronic sound. This is the first, simply titled The Dreams, an attempt to represent, in sound, the sensation of dreaming. Derbyshire's electronic and musique concrete sound bed is the perfect underscore to the narration, simultaneously jarring, dissonant, and terrifying. An amazing piece of work from one of the legendary pioneers of electronic music.

BIG BLOOD The Daughter's Union LP
"Recorded a bit before the last Big Blood slab we released -- Operate Spaceship Earth Properly (FTR 385CD/LP, 2018) -- The Daughter's Union represents the true introduction of Caleb and Colleen's daughter, Quinnisa as a full member of Big Blood. The Maine-based duo had been using Quinnisa as their secret hard rock weapon for quite a while, so it is gratifying as heck to see her finally get her due! In their new fully-fledges trio guise, Big Blood puff themselves up like a most splendid glam rock peacock, fairly bursting with readymade-riffs and inspirational high kicking energy bursts. Initially, this can seem a bit odd, given Big Blood's historical appreciation of bizarre folk-derived textural-psych. But heard in the context of their musical evolution, this move appears as just another roost along a trail that involves a whole lot of mountains and woods, with the occasional meadow-based rock festival stirred into the mix. By covering tunes by the Troggs and Silver Apples, Big Blood make it abundantly clear their interests are as far from catholic as their influences. Although it also seems that they are able to successfully transmute even the most thumpy-ass high-heel pumping into a move that is draped in moss and mystery. I can hardly wait to hear their track-by-track cover of Led Zeppelin II. I always thought those songs would sound better sung by an actual woman. Know what I mean?" --Byron Coley, 2019 Edition of 250.

MOSQUITOES Vortex Veering Back to Venus LP
"The aural pleasure created by this somewhat mysterious trio of London musicians continues to accrue. After two fine self-released records (one a 7", th' other a 12"), and the superb Drip Water Hollow Out Stone on the great Ever/Never label, Feeding Tube is honored to present the Mosquitoes' latest assault on the temples of beauty. The music on Vortex is of a piece with earlier recordings. By this, I mean there is a wonderfully 'out' approach to basic rock instrumentation and vocals, which détourns the basic assumptions listeners have about what rock instruments sound like. A good number of bands have done this in the modern era, from This Heat to U.S. Maple, but the only band the Mosquitoes continually call to my mind is late period Mars. That NYC unit had pretty much destroyed conventions of song and structure by the time they called it a day, and the instrumental/vocal mangling these guys do is equally brilliant. They really take every piece of sound apart and put it back together in a weird way. There are passages on Vortex that actually make me think of early Suicide as well (I think they use amp-noise-loops to approximate Rev's keyboards), but none of the music here has the aggression of Suicide. Instead, it projects a transcendent sense of confusion that is as head-scratching as it is appealing. If you like your music to be equal parts brains and power, you won't find many things more satisfying than the music of the Mosquitoes. Every one of their records is great. And they just keep getting better. How lucky for you." --Byron Coley, 2019 Edition of 250.

LLOYD PACK, THE On Holiday with... LP
"The Lloyd Pack is a project the prolific Dan Melchior has taken in a variety of directions. The band has been composed of various people, sometimes it's large, sometimes it's small, and the music's nature has always been unpredictable. On Holiday, recorded at various places and assembled in Raleigh, NC, is one of the Pack's small format efforts. For most of the music the only players are Mr. Melchior and vocalist Russell Walker (of the Pheromoans, among other bands). They are sometimes joined by Dan's not-infrequent collaborator, Anthony Allman, and on one track by the late Letha Rodman Melchior (once the drummer of Ecstatic Peace combo, Cell). And unlike the Pack's last LP, 2015's faux-Afrique A Tribute (Amish), the music here is generally low-key art-rock with somewhat raw characteristics. Of course, trying to cage Melchior's music with mere words is always problematic. Even his most garage-y antics always have a whiff of sophistication lurking somewhere, and his most dastardly high-art moves always seem to have absurdist grooves built into them somewhere. For On Holiday, The Lloyd Pack uses audio clips of what I assume to be the late Kentish actor after whom it named (Roger Lloyd-Pack), but these introductions often lead into dangerously riff-heavy cul-de-sacs where Walker lays down casual lyrics, while Melchior spins music that usually begins in utter simplicity and ends up running head first into a wall of blubber. Not really sure how he does it, but Dan has mad alchemical chops. And it just kinda works out. In a way On Holiday with... is one of the most generously balanced records Melchior has ever done. It often hovers in a sweet spot somewhere between pop and dunt and art, like Rod Stewart's riding a bucking boar in zero gravity. Or something. Regardless, you won't want to miss the spectacle. And in a way, it's the perfect entree to the wide wild world of Daniel Melchior. Welcome, friend." --Byron Coley, 2019 Edition of 250.

Advancing the post-punk infused concoction of blazing garage and art-driven destructs-rock, as established on Hand & Leg's grinding self-titled debut from 2017, the bass and drums are here cranked to new heights of molten activity. Murky shades of sexual negativity plough forth with the help of obsidian distortion, careering bass dirges so scuzzed they can clog arteries, ungodly squalls of paint-stripping noise, and a tendency towards playful rhythmic rituals themselves only offering brief respite from the merciless and sweat-drenched sonic saturation perfect for the late night clutches of a dingy basement. A-SUN AMISSA For Burdened and Bright Light CD
For Burdened and Bright Light is the fifth full-length album from A-Sun Amissa. This new work builds on the foundations of previous record Ceremony In The Stillness (GZH 085CD/LP, 2018), incorporating some of the heavier, distorted, guitar-oriented themes but this time fuses them with broken, crumbling electronic beats and primal drone movements. The result is two long-form pieces of work that take time to unfold and multiple listens to truly digest what is on offer. The music of A-Sun Amissa has evolved some-what naturally over the years, drawing from elements of dark-ambient, post-rock, and minimal doom, but always with a leading experimental edge and a huge amount of room to push the boundaries back as far as possible. For Burdened and Bright Light feels like the next logical chapter in the journey. Essentially, A-Sun Amissa is the project of Richard Knox (Gizeh Records founder, The Eternal Return Arkestra curator, member of The Rustle of the Stars, Shield Patterns, and Glissando) who has utilized a vast array of other musicians throughout the group's previous records. This time around though it's almost exclusively the work of Knox who continues to embed his typical DIY approach in writing, recording, and mixing the entire album, alongside providing the artwork. On a sonic level For Burdened and Bright Light is the furthest Knox has gone in terms of production, depth, and working with a more diverse palette of sounds. A-Sun Amissa's distinct atmosphere remains intact however and the result is a more immersive, ambitious, adventurous record of conflicting emotions as the theme of the work tackles the contradictions of being human and explores the duality of light and dark, hope and despair. The two compositions found here are underpinned by vast ambient passages that are drenched in distortion and reverb, slowly unfurling before more industrial, kinetic sounds are introduced and heaving guitars come to the fore. The clarinet work of Claire Knox features prominently and ranges from huge, droning, orchestral overtones in the opening section of "Breath by Breath" to a wild, free-jazz explosion in the middle of "Seagraves". The addition of David Armes's lap-steel for the first time brings a discordant and haunting element to the sound and builds on the recent live work this trio have done together.

LOS PIRANAS Historia Natural LP
LP version. 180 gram vinyl; includes download code. A celebrated instrumental supergroup featuring three of Bogotá's most visionary musicians: Eblis Alvarez (Meridian Brothers, Chúpame el dedo), Mario Galeano (Frente Cumbiero, Ondatropica), and Pedro Ojeda (Romperayo, Chúpame el dedo). Fusing the experimental possibilities of South American rhythms and sonics (cumbia, champeta, tropicalia, salsa, and more) with avant psych rock, dub minimalism, and spiked jazz, Los Pirañas are retro-futurism at its finest. The three members of Los Pirañas can all remember when they were in high school together in Bogotá, Colombia and just beginning to play music. Twenty-five years on and they've become internationally well-known musicians, spread across different bands, traversing multiple continents. Historia Natural, their third album, recaptures the spirit that moved them as teenagers. Although they'd played music together when young, Los Pirañas only came into being as a band in 2009. It gave them the chance to explore the complex vitality of Colombian rhythms mixed with Alvarez's unique blend of computer and guitar. Their debut release as Los Pirañas showcased the joys of "the trio format that was new to us," while the band's second release La Diversión Que Hacía Falta En Mi País (STAUB 145LP, 2017) came after a few years of touring. For their third outing they went searching for a nuanced naïveté and they found it, with Ojeda's adroit drumming and the muscular bass work of Mario Galeano of Frente Cumbiero fame, providing a solid anchor for the music. Together, the pair create a mighty tropical noise that frees up Alvarez for his guitar experiments. He's been working with computers and music for two decades, feeding his guitar through a laptop. Alvarez's guitar is a shapeshifter, constantly mutating sound and texture. It rarely sounds straight up, but there's never a doubt that someone is plucking the strings and bending the notes. Alvarez darts around and through the lines created by Ojeda and Galeano, leading or snapping at their heels. This is a band bristling with ideas, where the unspoken communication is so acute that all three of them can swerve together or turn on a dime. Their particular culture revolves very much around Colombia's capital, Bogotá, where they live and where they've always made music. A swirling, electric universe of music, created right in their own neighborhood. That's the real Historia Natural of Los Pirañas.

RAINBOW GRAVE No You LP
LP version. Featuring Nicholas Bullen (founder member of Napalm Death and Scorn) and John Pickering (founder member of Doom and Sore Throat), Birmingham-based Rainbow Grave channel the blank despair of negative punk through layers of distorted psychedelic damage: dirty guitars, freeform pedal abuse, and effected vocals coagulate around cyclic bass and drum rhythms in repetitive and minimal structures. After a performance at Fat Out Fest in Salford in April 2017, God Unknown Records approached the group to record a split 7" single (GODUNK 043EP). Released in July 2018 as part of volume three of the God Unknown Singles Series, Rainbow Grave's Death Pyramid is a crawling mantric blend of heavy bass, psychedelic guitars, robotic vocals, and hard drums described as "deeply hewn heaviness" (Shindig) and "congruent with the great scum rock purveyors of the late '80s" (The Wire). Following the reception of the single, God Unknown invited Rainbow Grave to continue the relationship with the release of the "Sex Threat/You Are Nowhere" 7" single in November 2018. SEELAND, REMO Hollow Body LP
Remo Seeland's Hollow Body is a suspenseful exploration of the interaction between sound environments and individual perception. It was sparked by an intense physical experience the Swiss artist had during a residency in New York City. "The subway became a sort of 'atonal symphony' for me, provoking a full-body experience with the rattling of the overcrowded, airless trains," the Hallow Ground founder explains. "However, while the old subway is not exactly beloved by everyone, it also represented for me the melancholic meta-level of the moloch above it." The album, his first under his given name, makes this disparity audible over six tracks in which the visceral and the personal become at once abstract and universal. Based on field recordings from both urban and rural environments, Hollow Body aims to mirror another of Seeland's psycho-sonic encounters. "In the highlands of Iceland, I noticed my pulse lowering and my breathing decelerating," he says. "Just shortly after that, a single insect's buzzing seemed so loud to me that I became even more aware of the silence surrounding me." Silence, perception, order, and the curious dialectics of the outside world and the inner workings of the human psyche are the central questions of Hollow Body. Recorded in New York, Reykjavík, and Zurich, Hollow Body draws extensively on field recordings and sees Seeland collaborating with Hallow Ground-affiliated artists Norman Westberg (Swans, guitar on "Body Innovation" and "Hollow City") and Reinier van Houdt (Current 93, e-bowed guitar on "Hollow City" and Rhodes organ on "Pulse Points Green"), as well as the Swiss-based US-American musician Steve Fors (Deaf At Sea, trombone on "Second Coming"). The diversity of the source material is mirrored in the stylistic richness Seeland lays out with this LP. From the lush, bass-heavy drones of the opener "Body Innovation", to the downbeat-driven "Second Coming" and, finally, the haunting organ sounds of "Night Within", Hollow Body forms a holistic entity that integrates idiosyncratic compositions into a coherent narrative.

HUBBLE, ALICE Polarlichter CD
Polarlichter is the debut album from Alice Hubble. It's an album of melancholic pop layered by vintage synths and elegant vocals. Alice Hubble is the new solo project of London based Alice Hubley and the product of one lady locked at home with her enormous collection of synthesizers. The album Polarlichter was born out of a desire to work on a project without constraints, to move away from the traditional song writing process and to experiment with the form. Inspired by the '70s recordings by Tangerine Dream, Ashra, and Kraftwerk, Alice wanted put a distinctly feminine take on the '70s Germanic synth sound. Other inspirations included Delia Derbyshire, Daphne Oram, Lee Hazlewood's Swedish recordings, '80s American synth pop band The Book of Love, and contemporary acts like Jane Weaver and Goldfrapp. Constructing and sketching riffs on her iPad during monotonous train journeys throughout the country, Alice built up her fragmentary ideas using vintage synthesizers and a mellotron creating something majestic, and sweeping. The album offers a soundscape of pastoral solace, far removed the urban sprawl. Includes "Goddess" named as Steve Lamacq's Single of 2019.

TRENTEMOLLER Obverse CD
Trentemøller returns with his fifth studio album, Obverse. Anders Trentemøller is a well-known multi-instrumentalist, but perhaps the one he's most adept at is the studio itself. Obverse is the result of him expanding that skill even further. Obverse often feels like an instrumental album because it started life as one, the driving philosophy being "what if the pressure of having to perform these songs live is removed entirely?" Granting yourself the freedom to chase down every idea a studio offers comes with privileges. What happens when you reverse a synth part mid-verse? Why not send an entire track through a faulty distortion pedal? Inspiration reveals itself in a variety of forms and, before long, a simple chord progression contorts into something entirely new. It's a work method that yielded great results for the legendary German kosmiche/motorik experimentalists of the 1970s. Intentional or not, Obverse embodies more than a little of that spirit without even a hint of pastiche. So it only makes sense that Obverse would stray from its original roadmap. In due time, half of the nascent compositions featured singers, including Lina Tullgren, Lisbet Fritze, and jennylee, of Warpaint, another band deeply influenced by dream pop. While Obverse was born from a different work ethic than previous efforts, it also continues an arc that started in 2006. Each successive effort has represented a logical next step beyond the album before, and Obverse absolutely picks up where Fixion (IMR 021LP/021LTD-CD/021LTD-LP, 2016) left off. For the past decade, Trentemøller has been perfecting this form of sonic chiaroscuro to conjure up images of severe landscapes, and to mirror the Scandinavian climate, where half the year the sun barely sets, and the other it barely tops the horizon. While there has been a film noir element in his previous work, Obverse is the first time each song has felt like a collection of pocket soundtracks. By fusing together a love of dream pop, dark synth-based music, film scores, and a deep connection with the stark Nordic panoramas, Anders has created an inimitable language. Ultimately Obverse resides in a genre all its own. CD version comes in a digipac.

ANTUNES, LUCIE Sergei LP+CD
Lucie Antunes is a French classically trained drummer and percussionist, inspired by the pioneers of minimalism. Her debut album Sergeï is a tour de force of eclectic music that leaves the listener amazed, almost hooked up in Lucie's magnetic spiral of sounds. The eclecticism that pervades Sergeï is shown by Lucie ability to create labyrinths of sounds through the use of unconventional instruments such as marimba, vibraphones, celesta, tubular balls, glockenspiel, and Ondes Martenot. Sergei is a statement of freedom. The same childish freedom that we run behind and that we desperately seek. Lucie, with Sergeï, achieves her freedom and builds on it, the artist that she is with no compromises but only with the determined ambition to break the boundaries, to shake genres and to make the eyes smile. TITO & TARANTULA 8 Arms To Hold You CD
The long-awaited new studio album. For the recordings, Tito Larriva chose a studio near his hometown. He grew up in El Paso, Texas, and always wanted to record in this studio called Sonic Ranch, less than an hour away. He thought it would be fun to be near his dad while recording the new album. Larriva drew energy from his father, the desert, and all the magical moments he carries in his heart. From what he calls home. 8 Arms To Hold You captures the colors and smells of the desert, it's passionate and romantic. Along with Tito's electrifying vocals, another masterpiece in his long and successful career as a musician, composer, and actor.Tito & Tarantula is the US-American Chicano rock/blues rock band formed in Hollywood, California in 1992 by singer/songwriter/guitarist Tito Larriva, best known for its songs, "After Dark", "Back to the House That Love Built", "Strange Face of Love", and "Angry Cockroaches", as well as for its role in Robert Rodriguez's film From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) as the band performing at the Titty Twister nightclub. "After Dark" was the track played during Salma Hayek's iconic exotic dance scene in that film, and later became the theme for From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series.

SCIENTIST MEETS THE CRAZY MAD PROFESSOR At Channel One CD
2011 release; 2019 repress. The mighty Scientist meets Jamaica's original Crazy Mad Professor in a dub showdown pitching their best musical shots against each other. The connection between these two great mixers/producers is that they both learned the trade and also cut their musical teeth working with the master himself King Tubby. Scientist (b. Overton Brownie, 1960, Jamaica) and the Crazy Mad Professor (not to be confused with the London-based Mad Professor, Neil Frazer, Ariwa Sounds) initially both helped King Tubby (b. Osbourne Ruddock) wind his transformers for his main business of electrical repairs. They both moved over to engineering and mixing when the need arose due to the heavy demands on Tubby's time and studio became too great. Scientist and The Crazy Mad Professor built their careers on these formative years of training, as they say if you learn from the best, your knowledge can only hold you in good stead and it certainly has with both these talents. Jamaican Recordings have pitched both against each other on some great rhythms recorded at the legendary Channel 1 Studios and then mixed them at King Tubby's Studio, as was often the case when rhythms needed voicing/versioning for that classic dub cut. CD version includes two bonus tracks.

EVANS, BILL The East End CD
World class sax player meets world class big band. Groove in a fine style. The Cologne Stadtgarten venue was crammed that mid-February eve in 2011. A very special concert was scheduled for the night -- and the audience did arrive in crowds at the Stadtgarten in Cologne to be part of this rare opportunity. The American saxophonist Bill Evans was in town to perform with the WDR Big Band. The crowd's anticipation of a sublime live concert made the air crackle with excitement. The temperature was rising quickly and the vibe was getting better and better. Evans has always loved that sort of setting. When the audience is already excited before the show even starts and the musicians are incredibly focused on what is about to unfold, he reaches his true working temperature which enables him to deliver a top performance on stage, performing on the tenor- or soprano saxophone. Especially for the WDR Big Band concert with Bill Evans two "groove-masters" were invited; the German drummer Wolfgang Haffner and the Cameroon-born and France-based Etienne Mbappé. Not only is their playing technique fully developed but both, Haffner as well as Mbappé, are gifted with the ability to roll out a densely woven groove-carpet while simultaneously electrifying the rhythmical roots of a piece of music. As a result of this, the stylistically diverse music of Evans and the WDR Big Band is well and truly animated -- and starts to sound like a living organism. Personnel: Bill Evans - saxes; Etienne Mbappé - electric bass; Wolfgang Haffner - drums; WDR Big Band. CD version comes in a digipak.

XENAKIS, IANNIS Persepolis LP
Limited 2019 repress. After La Légende d'Eer in 2016 (KR 024LP), the Perihel series presents one of the milestones of electroacoustic music: Iannis Xenakis's mind-blowing, 54-minutes oeuvre Persepolis. Persepolis is the longest electroacoustic composition by Iannis Xenakis (1922-2001) who ranks among the most influential 20th century avant-garde composers. Commissioned by the Persian Shah, the piece was part of a multimedia performance -- Xenakis's so-called "polytopes" -- which premiered in 1971 in Shiraz-Persepolis (Iran) as a performance including light-tracks, laser beams, groups of children walking around with torches, and 59 loudspeakers to project the music in an open-air situation. Xenakis had realized Persepolis on 8-track analog tape in the Studio Acusti in Paris and released a stereo reduction on vinyl in the famous Philips series "Prospective 21e Siècle" in 1972, adding the new subtitle "We bear the light of the earth", his most hymnal title ever. Out of print for decades now, the LP became -- especially the Japanese edition from 1974 -- one of the most expensive collector's item of electroacoustic music. There were some later CD versions with different durations -- too long due to a wrong sample rate, others shortened by three minutes due to other reasons. The Perihel series now presents a new version: mixed from the original master 8-track tapes by longtime zeitkratzer sound engineer Martin Wurmnest and mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin -- the same experts who had already taken care of the 2016 Karlrecords release of La Légende d'Eer, another milestone composition among the works of the Greek-French avant-garde composer. Previous releases in the Perihel series, curated by Reinhold Friedl: Guy Reibel's Douze Inventions en Six Modes de Jeu (KR 028LP, 2015); Iannis Xenakis's La Légende d'Eer (KR 024LP, 2016), John Cage's Complete Song Books (KR 029LP, 2016). 180 gram vinyl; Includes insert and download code.

KONSTRUKT + KEN VANDERMARK Kozmik Bazaar LP
Turkish free jazzers Konstrukt continue their series of exciting collaborations with Ken Vandermark, one of the key figures of Chicago's vivid jazz scene. After two critically acclaimed albums with the Japanese avant-garde/noise icon, Keiji Haino, Konstrukt return with a new inspiring collaborative mind: Ken Vandermark, who for three decades now has been a highly prolific musician in contemporary jazz and free improvisation. With various groups like NRG Ensemble, Spaceways Inc., The Vandermark 5, Made To Break, or the Peter Brötzmann Chicago Tentet (to name just a few) and various spontaneous collaborations the saxophone/clarinet player has created an impressive catalog and performed/recorded with the who-is-who of today's jazz/improv scene: Paal Nilssen-Love, Hamid Drake, Fred Anderson, Paul Lytton, Joe Morris, The Ex, Axel Dörner, Mats Gustafsson, Joe McPhee, Zu, Peter Brötzmann, Paul Lovens, Lasse Marhaug, Yakuza, Kevin Drumm, and many more. Vandermark's enduring exploration and development of new paths in (free) jazz and improvisation not only made him a key figure of the vivid Chicago scene (since the days of AACM, a hotspot for musical creativity), but also gained the him the reputed Mac Arthur Fellowship in 1999. In November 2018, Konstrukt (who themselves can look back on a long list of class A collaborators like Joe McPhee, William Parker, Akira Sakata, Marshall Allen, Evan Parker, Thurston Moore, or Alexander Hawkins) met Vandermark in their homebase Istanbul for a recording session -- a match made in heaven that all musicians involved are extremely happy with. The resulting album, Kozmik Bazaar, starts with a reference to Ornette Coleman before turning more and more into a psychedelic trip that goes way beyond the "jazz idiom". But what else to expect from such a stellar constellation? Personnel: Kontstrukt: Korhan Futac? - alto saxophone, instant loops, vocal; Umut Ça?lar - electric guitar, synthesizer, gralla, guimbri; Apostolos Sideris - double bass; and Berkan Tilavel - drums, electronic percussion; with Ken Vandermark - tenor saxophone, clarinet. Recorded by Ozan Öner at Pür Recording Studio, Istanbul. Mixed by Korhan Futac? and Umut Ça?lar. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. 180 gram vinyl; includes download code.

G.A.M.S. G.A.M.S. LP
Feedback leads a life of its own. It is an uncontrollable sonic accident, usually ear-numbingly loud but sometimes also delicately ethereal. The essence of feedback is being released from bonds, its path is always one of intensification and escape. It's a physical phenomenon and hard to predict. The duo G.A.M.S. makes music on the edge of losing control. A restless drummer works his way through waves of feedback, which span the full spectrum of frequencies from pumping bass to the highest tones. With the pulse of the feedback Andi Stecher's drumming, at times feverish and driven, then distanced and abstract, creates polyrhythmic structures. What comes into being is a maelstrom of sound and rhythm -- music beyond every style, the power of which lies in its rawness. Stecher and Guido Möbius switch the roles of desired and undesired sound and thereby create pieces like archaic sculptures. Their music is raw and powerful, but can also be soft and etheric. Sometimes it feels like a delicate organic painting. But here's one thing that G.A.M.S. music certainly isn't: predictable. The duo uses freely improvised spaces and reacts to unplanned sonic events. And despite all of its seeming randomness, G.A.M.S. still manage to compose clearly structured pieces and to reconstruct these in their live program. Through a cut-up technique patterns of feedback sound fragments are juxtaposed and interlocked in varied combinations. These hypnotic loops move between rhythm and melodies, a web that is carried along by a driving drum set, accents of sub-bass, and layers of feedback drones. The playful drum style of Stecher is far from conventional rock drumming. Instead he experiments with various materials -- for instance by preparing his cymbals with chains or putting different objects on the skin of his drums. He makes offbeat meters and complicated grooves sound easy and light. The same goes for changes in timing or dense textures comprising ghost notes. On the other hand. he plays straight forward beats dynamically and with power. Möbius who (with the help of a guitar amp, a microphone, and effects) creates live feedbacks which can be massive and noisy, but also fragile and gentle. Fleeting and concrete sounds join into dense textures. Feedback is never static rather always in a process of change. Musical guests on the album are ex-Napalm Death drummer and electronic producer Mick Harris (Scorn, Fret) contributing drones and field recordings and the versatile singer Yuko Matsuyama (Hula Hut, The Seven Seas).

SCHMICKLER, MARCUS Particle/Matter-Wave/Energy LP
Kompakt welcomes veteran contemporary experimental producer Marcus Schmickler with the release of his spectacular noise/techno fused medallion entitled Particle/Matter-Wave/Energy. Marcus Schmickler's fifty plus release discography is one of the most fascinating in his field. From his studies under Cologne-based Stockhausen collaborator Johannes Fritsch to his releases through legendary imprints a-Musik, Editions Mego, and Mille Plateaux, over the years Schmickler has been behind innumerable collaborations and sonic explorations. Be it through his ground-breaking indie/electronic band Pluramon or through his releases that have included collaborations with musicians such as John Tilbury, Thomas Lehn, Julee Cruise, or MIMEO, he has even had his works being performed by ensemble recherche, musikFabrik, or Paragon Ensemble. Beyond continuing to perform on the world stages, he authors theater and film and currently teaches at Institut für Musik und Medien in Dusseldorf. Particle/Matter-Wave/Energy, a 37-minute long piece (split into two parts on the LP version), explores the borders of a scientific universality of sonification towards something that becomes a singular experience -- sound. The pieces' foundational aim was to create an acoustic rendering of what it sounds like when two galaxies collide by gravitational forces. To avoid this one sheet getting lost in theory, the audible result of Particle/Matter-Wave/Energy is an incredibly, immersive work that is required listening from start to end. Contemporary experimental music and modern techno collide as waves of synths caress the listener through intense waves of frequency variables. The orchestral enormity of the piece is both discomforting yet embracing as the listener feels engulfed with its robotic caress.

VA Kompakt Total 19 2CD
You may ask: "In the day and age of streaming playlists and the omnipresence of freely available mixes, what's the use of a label compilation?" The answer is simple: labels still serve as a dearly needed filter mechanism in this tsunami of music we're facing every day. Labels strive to establish trust between artists and listeners. They're like your favorite restaurant around the corner. On the spur of the moment, you might find more excitement in that hip place that just opened somewhere else. But when the novelty fades, you'll always return to your sanctuary. The safe place where they know your name and the last drink is on the house. Kompakt has become such a place for generations of fans and artists alike. And the Total compilation series serves as its menu: always changing but instantly recognizable. As per usual, Total is a collection of the past year's biggest tunes, the creme de la creme of Kompakt's steady output of 12-inches. With Jürgen Paape, the notorious Voigt brothers, Thomas/Mayer, and Jörg Burger -- all founding fathers are on board. Legacy artists Sascha Funke and Justus Köhncke make their long-awaited comebacks, the latter with a kinky Patrick Cowley homage called "Mindless Sex Track". Cologne young blood Julian Stetter nails the starry-eyed, romantic Kompakt signature sound with his remix for an up-and-coming local pop outfit called Albert Luxus. Fellow Colonian Jonathan Kaspar makes his label debut with his slinky track "Renard". DJ Balduin definitely is one to watch in 2020. His massive "E.W.B.A." transcends the friendly populism of an ancient Love Parade anthem while capturing the sincere spirit of today's electro revival. Rex The Dog's "Vortex" and Tom Demac's "Serenade" perfectly showcase why Kompakt is still one of the most played and charted labels in electronic music today. In a scene that is more fragmented than ever these two producers delivered true consensus hits that are cherished on all sizes and shapes of floors beyond genre boundaries. The second half completely belongs to a whole new breed from the label's beloved Speicher series such as ANNA, Yotam Avni, Extrawelt, Raxon, Blackrachas, John Monkman, and La Fleur alongside the label's full-time members Patrice Bäumel, Kölsch, and Gui Boratto. Double-CD version also includes Weval, Julian Stetter, Reinhard Voigt, Anii, Clarian, Fahrland, James Monro, and an unreleased Jörg Burger.

KALEIDOSCOPE After The Futures ... LP
"Kaleidoscope's new LP swells unsteadily into existence, with the tinkle of half-jazzy drums filtering through an industrial gloom. It's a sign that what is to come isn't your standard down-the-line hardcore offering. Title track 'After The Futures ...', for instance, opens with a languorous guitar stab that wouldn't be out of a place on a drone or noise record, a brooding rumble like a distant closing door in an warehouse, before the song tumbles into gear, Shiva enunciating the lyrics with a sharp-tongued Jerry A-like clarity. From the chomp of 'Sigint --> E.K.I.A.', the deathrock swells swooping out from the itchy insistent guitar line of 'Crocodile Tears' to deep thrum of 'Soft Cage', After The Futures ... is full of moments of punk broken and reconstituted, familiar structures and beats rearranged in the uncomfortable clamor into something wilder and weirder. It's about sustained tension before a riff kicks in, a solo looking like it's about to soar before being broken sharply off into a thorny keening. A punk record fractured and sliced-through, twisted into fresh shape and shining with a razor's gleam." --Joe Briggs

CHAVEZ, MARIA Plays (Stefan Goldmann's 'Ghost Hemiola') CD
Turntablist and sound artist Maria Chavez turns in her first continuous full-length audio work. Plays is a DJ mix CD that doesn't feature any tracks. It is a remix of a work whose original doesn't feature recorded sound. It is a minimalistic yet complex electroacoustic work, literally built from scratch, bootstrapping sound out of sheer silence: creatio ex nihilio. The story of this album starts with a record given to Chavez as a birthday present. It is Stefan Goldmann's Ghost Hemiola (MACROM 022R-EP, 2013), a double vinyl set of empty locked grooves. The record contains no sound whatsoever other than the vinyl's own surface noise. Chavez's work with records and turntables usually features a rich layer of recorded audio which is transformed, cut up and rearranged by a wide range of fearless physical manipulations. By contrast Ghost Hemiola is a blank canvas, unveiling her craft in its purest form, unobstructed by any audio content other than the sounds of the medium itself. Breaking up the medium is happening both ways here, literally as well as figuratively. Unlike with her live performances, for Plays Chavez employs digital processes extensively, zooming into minute details of sound and the artefacts of both mediums, the tangible vinyl record and disembodied digital audio. Narrowing down shards of sound to extremely short frames creates metallic timbres, reverberating quasi-spaces, and percussive layers. Slowing down the tempo until sound halts at one sample of its digital representation brings forth emergent frequencies, which Chavez then uses to play melodies -- vaguely resembling her analog technique of playing melodies by skipping a stylus back and forth across a test tone record. This thorough investigation of the unobstructed vinyl medium with digital means is distilled into a one-hour composition on this album. By the way -- Chavez and Goldmann share the same birthdate.

SCOTTI, GABRIEL The Fairy Tale Factory CD
This CD, released on the occasion of "The Fairy Tale Factory" exhibition, contains the eight tales at the heart of the scenography imagined for the exhibition. These stories from traditional repertoires have been handed down orally over several generations and traveled across Europe, from the Mediterranean to Scandinavia and the Celtic countries to the Balkans. Rewritten in a contemporary version by the writer Fabrice Melquiot, these stories, performed by eight men and women storytellers aged from ten to ninety-nine, are presented in a sound setting composed by Gabriel Scotti who drew his inspiration from recordings conserved in the MEG's Archives internationales de musique populaire. The tales in music are followed by the eight musical tracks of G. Scotti's compositions. Included booklet presents the texts of the tales accompanied by drawings, paintings, and photographs of dioramas in paper cut-outs, done by Carll Cneut, Camille Garoche, Kalonji, and Lorenzo Mattotti, the four illustrators invited to bring these tales to life for the exhibition. Tales performed by: Olivier Chiacchiari, David Jakobowicz, Julie Henoch, Cyril Kaiser, Isis Lengo, Camille Mermet, Pauline Robert, Jean Vigny. Features guest musician: Raphael Daniel - bass clarinet.

HINATA, TOSHIFUMI Broken Belief LP
Broken Belief brings together a selection of recordings by Japanese multi-instrumentalist Toshfumi Hinata drawn from a body of work originally recorded between 1985-1987. Attending Berklee College of Music after spending time living in both the United States and the United Kingdom, Hinata would study under the tutelage of pianist Patricia Laliberte, graduating from the esteemed American school in 1982. Returning to Japan after becoming disillusioned with his classical training, Hinata experimented with many different forms of music. Moving away from depending simply on acoustic instruments, he would instead become entrenched in the possibilities of the latest analog synthesizers being developed at the time. Toshifumi Hinata's initial idea was to make his first album with just a Prophet 5 and Linn Drum Machine. Tweaking filters and creating intricate sequences, Hinata would record various sounds on analog tapes and overdub many different layers; recording violin, piano, and other accompaniments separately later on. It would become a method of working for the musician which he would apply almost entirely throughout this period. A deeply submerged process; one in which he would seek, as he himself puts it, to "weave musical images". Toshifumi Hinata would go on to record several more albums released only on CD throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, after which he focused mainly on music for TV dramas, commercials, and documentaries. Now living in Tokyo, he is almost exclusively focused on creating music for documentaries. The period of work released between 1985-1987 is one though that was not only a rich moment in the history of Hinata himself but of Japanese music and electronic music in general.

BIRTWISTLE, HARRISON Musica Viva 29 CD/SACD
Sir Harrison Birtwistle is doubtless one of the most important and influential British composers of the last decades. This CD brings together two works with a strong link to the tradition: "Responses" is a piano concerto that, in accordance with historical convention, focuses on the dialogue between the soloist and the orchestra. Birtwistle's second large-scale opera, "Gawain", deals with the legend of King Arthur. In the orchestral version, "Gawain's Journey", which was published the same year the opera premiered, the voice parts are allocated to various instruments. Instead of merely cobbling together selected passages into an orchestral suite, Birtwistle composed them into a standalone orchestral work of immense musical power.

MANOURY, PHILIPPE Le Temps, Mode D'emploi CD/SACD
Philippe Manoury is one of the most important French composers working today and is a pioneer in combining music with live electronics. With Le Temps, Mode D'emploi (Time -- a User's Guide) he created an evening-length work about the phenomenon of time and various possibilities for sculpting and experiencing it. Two real pianos positioned in the middle of the hall are surrounded by four virtual pianos that sound from loudspeakers. This highly complex work is dedicated to the GrauSchumacher Piano Duo, who premiered it in 2014 in Witten, Germany in cooperation with the SWR Experimentalstudio and have worked again with them here to produce the studio recording for this CD.

SCHIMPP, MARKUS Yearning for Silence CD
"33 approximations to silence" is how Markus Schimpp describes the collection of piano miniatures recorded here. The catalyst and starting point for this composition was his relationship to the music of Ludwig van Beethoven. On this disc, Schimpp seeks out quiet moments, experimenting with simple harmonies and contemplative repetitions -- silent music as a counterbalance to the daily onslaught of media overstimulation.Markus Schimpp was born in Augsburg in 1964. After earning a degree at the Leopold-Mozart-Konservatorium there, he set out on an unusual career path. Today he works as a cabaret pianist, singer, host, and composer in Bonn.

RUZICKA, PETER Musica Viva 33 CD/SACD
This 33rd volume of the Musica Viva series on NEOS documents an extraordinary concert. The program comprises exclusively works by Peter Ruzicka, conducted by the composer himself, to commemorate his 70th birthday in July 2018. One of the CD's highlights is the world premiere of the fulminant trumpet concerto, "LOOP". One of the work's two soloists plays only piccolo trumpet while the other occasionally switches to flugelhorn. This way, the piece exploits the fullest conceivable extent of the instrument's range -- as well as the boundaries of what's technically possible. Other works presented here provide a multilayered insight into Ruzicka's orchestral works from 1984 to the present.

BARRECA, MARC From The Gray And The Green CD
"Moving in the directions that originated with the Environments recordings and evolved to become extended pieces like Klaus Schulze's Gewitter, Robert Henke's Studies For Thunder, Brian Eno's On Land and Steve Peter's Here-ings, the music of From The Gray And The Green finds its origins in landscapes. This time, landscapes that Marc Barreca knows as his home -- the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. These eleven pieces and three digital-only bonus tracks are sculpted from layers of synthesized and sampled instruments, field recordings and processed vinyl. Barreca tells us that 'My goal was to create immersive, evolving landscapes shaped by a dynamic past and viewed as if through the translucence of passing clouds.' From The Gray And The Green offers a music of contrasts and change, departing from traditional ideas of ambient to arrive in shifting landscapes of the strange and the beautiful. Includes an eight-page booklet and download card for the complete album and three bonus tracks. Mastered by James Savage. Marc Barreca has been creating and performing electronic music since the mid-1970s. His 1980 album, Twilight, reissued on vinyl in 2016, was one of the earliest releases on Palace Of Lights. From The Gray And The Green is his ninth solo album for the label. Recent releases include Shadow Aesthetics (2018) and three collaborations with K. Leimer. Reissues include work on the acclaimed VOD box set American Cassette Culture, the Cherry Red compilation of seminal U.S. electronic music and the 1983 cassette, Music Works For Industry, now on vinyl. His work is also included in the collection of The British Library."

PIOUS FAULTS Old Thread LP
Penultimate Press (UK) and Aimless Wander (Australia) present the debut album from Brisbane's Pious Faults. With Old Thread this young Australian group have crafted a remarkably lucid and original vinyl debut. A sonic whirlwind of wonderfully deconstructed hardcore punk -- songs stripped of inheritable form, leaping from stone to leaf to puddle in a unique, abstract manner. Pious Faults careen through nine tracks on this 45rpm 12?, balancing short, disaffected hardcore punk blasts with an experimental urgency, as referenced across tracks like the massive "Worship the Surface." The tense physical interplay between instruments feeds powerfully beneath uninhibited, wonder-full snarls that depict a landscape of the destructive external and a keyhole view into the bruised internal. Experience is exposed here by Pious Faults. Watch on and see no mind tied to its own leap. This record is born solely out of love, amusement, and all the motions that follow in their wake. Tracked and mixed by Luke Walsh, mastered by Mikey Young. UK/Australian pressing limited to 300 copies, includes booklet.

NOETINGER AND ANTHONY PATERAS, JEROME A Sunset for Walter LP
Penultimate Press present A Sunset for Walter, the first duo release from long-time collaborators Jérôme Noetinger and Anthony Pateras. "Having worked together in a number of different collaborative contexts over the years, the pair used Pateras' 2018 residency at Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart as an opportunity to develop a major durational work for Steinway piano and multiple Revox tape machines. Presenting four excerpts from a three-hour concert, the LP's opening moments immediately establish its distinctive sound-world: an austere sequence of octaves slowly sounded by the piano gradually develops into passages of fragmentary lyricism as Noetinger's tape manipulations dilate the sonic space with rumbling sub-bass, distant echoes, and hints of uncanny backmasking. A Sunset for Walter was conceived as a loose tribute to the piano works of Walter Marchetti, particularly the slowed-down subaquatic expanse of Nel Mari Del Sud. As Marchetti described his own work, A Sunset for Walter is 'music without beginning, or end, or development', where the lack of obvious structural divisions creates something like an endless present. But where the monochrome surface of Marchetti's work -- in its willingness to descend, in his own words to the 'pits of aesthetic poverty' -- often approaches total stasis, A Sunset for Walter is calmly immovable in its overall texture but perpetually changing in detail, as the performers respond intuitively to each other, their instruments, and the environment. Noetinger's tape manipulations range from nearly imperceptible shadowing of the live piano to anarchic bursts of rewinding tape, floating wisps of feedback, and dreamlike concrète interjections of children's voices and splashing water. Pateras' piano performance moves from single pitches left hanging over a backdrop of silence to almost Messiaen-esque sequences of complex chords and arpeggios, all sounded within a temporal framework that seems to follow internal rhythms of breath and bodily movements. Caught in this hall of mirrors, the listener is often unable to distinguish the live piano from its tape-manipulated reflection. Like the sunset of the title, here outlines blur into a crepuscular haze, as fleeting effects of light and shade catch our attention just as they disappear." --Francis Plagne

PANCRACE The Fluid Hammer 2LP
Pancrace is a quintet from France comprising Prune Bécheau, Arden Day, Julien Desailly, Léo Maurel, and Jan Vysocky. Pancrace began with a residence in 2015 at the Saint Pancrace church in Dangolsheim where the instrument inventor Léo Maurel resides. Pancrace's debut self-titled double-LP was released by Penultimate Press in 2017 and ended up on The Wire's best releases of that year. After the first record and subsequent tour the band were despondent that the main character of their story, the church organ, was not there. A series of meetings and chance encounters resulted in the band developing their own organ which they named "Organous". The approach of Pancrace is based on the physicality of sound, a choice of specific tone qualities within a given spatial contextual awareness. Therefore, the manufacturing and usage of the musical instrument are constantly reassessed. Consequently, playing with the mechanical aspect of the instruments is central to their musical approach and narrative. Designing an unbound pipe organ -- though emulating some of the mechanical idiomatics of the initial Pancrace church organ -- seemed the obvious way to gain more spatial control over a vast choice of places. This allowed them to approach their music from a totally new angle and work from within the organ. The results of these experiments are captured here, on their second opus, The Fluid Hammer. This new beast of an instrument, somewhere between a spider or an octopus, led Pancrace to compose from the frontality of the instrument as well as with the interactive tone possibilities brought by other instruments. With its six panels display (two bass registers, two treble, and a pair of crumhorns) the organ projects sound like the musique concrèt Acousmonium giving the listener a spatialized perception of a wide range of tones and harmonics. Fluid Hammer is the result of the research and experiments undertaken with the Organous and other instruments. Fluid Hammer is a more rhythmic and percussive affair than its predecessor, bringing to mind the experiments of Conlon Nancarrow as well as fairground barrel organs. The wide range of polyrhythmic patterns generates a constant tension between the machine and the human play. Music for Organous (spatialized and MIDI-controlled pipe organ), Uilleann pipes, Pi-synth, piano, motorised bow, boîte à bourdons, gaida, Baroque violin, hurgy toys, toy piano, componium, bodhran, low whistle, bird calls, AM radio, and shaker.

HEAVEN'S CLUB Here There And Nowhere CD
"Formed in Oakland, CA, Heaven's Club began as the project of Shiv Mehra during downtime while off tour with his band Deafheaven. It then expanded to include Deafheaven drummer Dan Tracy, Nadia Kury, Chris Natividad, Ross Peacock and Luis Mayorga. Finding ground in introspective lyricism and progressive, ethereal sonics, they achieve a careful balance between punching urgency and distant atmosphere. Recorded at Santo Studios in Oakland, CA, the band's producer and engineer Andrew Oswald acts as a seventh member and brings a rich texture and nuance to Mehra's vision. Of the project, Mehra says: 'Heaven's Club is the fog of memory and insubstantial fantasy. The songs reside in the liminal space between love and the end of suffering. They reach toward an ambiguous desire for peace -- a deeply felt longing.'"

FIREBREATHER Under A Blood Moon CD
"Fire is what happens when a carbon-based object is consumed by oxygen. That chemical reaction is fitting to the sound of Firebreather: the riffs are suffocating, the rhythms fast-moving and all-consuming. It's so blindingly and deafeningly monolithic, don't be surprised to be gasping for air while listening. The Gothenburg, Sweden trio has a streamlined focus on driving, symphonic riffs in the vein of High On Fire, Inter Arma and their tour and label-mates Monolord. The guitar and bass tones are, quite simply, entrancing. Like watching flames engulf a forest, the billowing guitar tones are simultaneously beautiful and destructive, while the rhythms sway and lunge with vicious precision. 'It's riff-based, heavy as fuck, but with a groove to it,' explains vocalist/guitarist Mattias Nööjd, formerly of popular Swedish doom merchants Galvano. 'We had gotten off a tour with Monolord in February of 2018 and by that time we had the song 'Firebreather' done," but soon thereafter new drummer Axel Wittbeck joined the fold. 'Once Axel had joined, it was like the flood gates opened,' says bassist Kyle Pitcher. 'The rest of the album just came together.' Under A Blood Moon was recorded at Elementstudion in Gothenburg with engineer Oskar Karlsson, who also recorded the band's lauded 2017 self-titled debut on Suicide Records."

HATAKEYAMA, CHIHEI Forgotten Hill LP
Tokyo ambient maestro Chihei Hatakeyama's Forgotten Hill is a record about the melting of time. He creates an impressionist meditation on his journey through the Asuka region of Japan; an area known for its burial mounds, epic Buddhist monuments, and quietly poetic landscapes. From Chihei Hatakeyama: "A few years ago I went on a trip to the Asuka region. This album, Forgotten Hill, draws all of its inspiration from this trip. The experiences I had on this journey were used as compositional guides to compile the sonic impressions I experienced during this time. The Asuka region was once land that hosted the capital of Japan from the Sixth to Seventh centuries. Today, it is an unpopular rice-drenched rural area, and although there are few tourists compared to Kyoto and the northern part of Nara, the region still draws people as there it features various burial mounds, known as 'Kofun'. One of these old burial mounds is called the 'Ishibutai Kofun', which loosely translates as Stone Stage. When I was a child, I learned about the existence of this old burial mound through Tezuka Osamu's Manga and since that time, I always wanted to visit there . . . It was the spring when I visited there, and yet I was the only person in sight. I have no idea what kind of stories are trapped within this tomb, all those things seen and heard by the rock. When I stood in front of it, I was captured by the feeling that I wanted to get on the stone stage, to be consumed by the burial mound. As I went inside the stone chamber I felt a strong sense of pressure. While getting down the stairs leading to the dark stone chamber, this pressure grew stronger, it was a very particular and strange sensation . . .The interior of the stone chamber was like an alien landscape. I couldn't help but think about the Monolith from Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey . . . With this record, I aimed to create music, like a labyrinth, based on these days spent in the Asuka region. This is a record about time, about losing direction in time and wondering where it is exactly the past, the present and the future might meet, and under what circumstances this might happen."

WEDDING PRESENT, THE Live 2010: Bizarro Played Live In Germany CD+DVD
The Wedding Present, recorded and filmed at the Atomic Café, Munich, on October 24th, 2010. This double-disc release includes both a CD and a DVD of the concert. DVD includes bonus track.Of the original Bizarro release, All Music says: "The Wedding Present's second proper studio album, Bizarro, cut down a bit on the frenetic jangle the band was known for in its early days and replaced it with healthy doses of darkness and power. Adding some fuzzy, crunchy distortion to give the guitars some hefty impact, slowing the tempos down to speeds that allow vocalist David Gedge to squeeze more heartbroken despair and bleak sarcasm out of every line, and generally upping their game in every way, the album was the fullest realization of The Wedding Present's sound yet. Leading off with the unstoppably hooky 'Brassneck' which features a brilliant Gedge reading of lines that rhyme 'grow up' and 'throw up', the album plays like a collection of thematically related singles. The Wedding Present didn't necessarily need to improve their already winning template, but they did and it pays off big time on Bizarro."

JOHN GHOST Airships Are Organisms CD
John Ghost is ingenious and exploratory, often described as a symbiosis between the sounds of Steve Reich, John Hollenbeck, Nils Frahm, and Jaga Jazzist. Created around the Ghent guitarist and composer Jo De Geest, the Belgian sextet draw on influences from jazz, rock and post-classical music, where minimalism, electronics, and a cinematic atmosphere characterize their instrumental music. Airships Are Organisms, released via Sdban Ultra, was produced by Jørgen Træen (Jaga Jazzist, Kaizers Orchestra, Hubro, Sondre Lerche). When it came to recording the album, John Ghost searched for a balance between the venturous, accessible and playful character of jazz music, in which John Ghost has its origins, and a carefully thought out selection process with the production, with a sharp eye and ear for detail. Seemingly simple earwigs are underpinned by driving undertones that inspire harmonic twists and a rhythmic and melodic stratification, that often results in a very danceable soundtrack. Tracks like 13-minute album opener "Deconstructing Hymns", keep a fine balance between moments of abstraction and repetition while recent single "Disfunctional Rabbits: The Disfunction" is an intoxicating, dreamy soundscape that alternates between balanced jazz fluctuations and space-like grooves. Elsewhere, the idiosyncratic "The Fallen Colony", spirals into a progressive narrative of experimentation and improvisation, a common thread throughout large parts of John Ghost's music, before the haunting "Drones For a Sunken Mothership", combines soaring bowed melodies and broken beats that is not only mesmeric but filled with breathtaking majesty.Formed in 2010, John Ghost were nominated for the "Young Jazz Talent" Award at the prestigious Gent Jazz Festival the same year, and a series of shows followed including the International Jazz Festival Middelburg, in the Netherlands. After a brief hiatus, they released their 2016 album For A Year They Slept, to critical acclaim across Belgium, and they have been busy in the studio once again, developing and honing their sound.

INDUSTRIALYZER Moonstone 12"
Industrialyzer tracks create soundscapes built for cavernous warehouses where regular rules don't apply. The Portugal-born, Amsterdam-based producer born Ricardo Rodrigues maintains his consistent form on the Moonstone EP with four slamming tracks made for these very conditions. The title Moonstone beats you into oblivion with a relentless kick and distorted vocals. "Kontrol" peals of synth cut through a thick mist of white noise and the ever-present kick. "Daily Nova" is a more vibrant track, with house-y chords laid over a pulsing beat. On "Psychic Overlays", Rodrigues wades back into darker waters in a pummeling peak-time cut.

VA 5 Years Anniversary Series 03 12"
Kicking off the third instalment of the series is San Proper's "Your Call", a robust yet dream house workout fueled by choppy bass hits, fluttering synth licks, and a shuffled analog drum groove. Barcelona based trio Triad follow with "Room N", a hypnotic house cut fueled by ethereal chord swells, modulating percussion, and vacillating bass tones. Tokyo's Iori Wakasa then rounds out the release with "Rave In A Village", which, as the name would suggest, embraces a classic house feel via a winding piano chord, twinkling piano melodies, crunchy drums, and mesmeric pads throughout. The 5 Years project also sees a new design concept for the imprint from London's David Surman's painting installation project "Paintings For The Cat Dimension" which "explores the motif of the cat as emblematic of internet aesthetics, a place where all painting styles and modes now exist non-hierarchically as pure information." Sound Of Vast marks its five years anniversary this year and to celebrate its offering up five special various artist packages across 2019 limited to 250 copies each, featuring material from the likes of Vid, The Mole, Cinthie, Shinichiro Yokota, San Proper, Akiko Kiyama, Com Sin aka Cosmin TRG, Subb-an, and more.

For the fourth installment in the series Sound Of Vast welcome Berlin's queen of house, Cinthie, onto its roster with "6am". As the name suggests, it's a heads-down, emotive slice of house aimed at those special moments in the early hours of the dance floor, fusing a robust analog drum workout with bright strings, jazzy piano lines, and driving low-end. Akiko Kiyama's "Dirt Specks" follows, a typically unique offering from the Tokyo based experimentalist, built around swirling bass notes, hypnotizing processed vocals and glitched-out percussion before label co-founder Red Pig Flower's "Mental Adventure" brings Eastern-tinged plucked strings and vacillating atmospherics into the limelight alongside rounded subs and a bumpy rhythmic drive to create a smooth, hypnotic trip. Brooklyn's Seer is the live electronics duo of Maroje T and M Parent, two budding artists who explore the outer edges of dance psychedelia. Their otherworldly electro is brought to life by conjuring the unknown in a live dancefloor setting and then further honing that magic in the studio. With No Resurrection, the duo presents its most fully realized expression of this process. Steely 808 drums cut through spacey pads and disembodied voices on the likes of "Electrolytic" and "Principle of Casualty"; the driving, squelchy basslines in "Polaronic" contrast the low-slung grooves of "No Resurrection" and "Surface Normal".

SIROM A Universe that Roasts Blossoms for a Horse LP
LP version. 180 gram vinyl; includes download code. Slovenian "imaginary folk" instrumental trio return with a kaleidoscopic third album. Handmade and global instrumentation meets fearless sound exploration. There's a sequence in Memoryscapes, a lovely French-made short film, in which Sirom set about fashioning music from a pile of pots, pans, saucepan lids and empty cans of supermarket lager on the kitchen table. The three members of the band -- Ana Kravanja, Samo Kutin, and Iztok Koren, in any order you like for this is a collective endeavor -- are gently fending off any question that attempts to reduce their music to type. "Imaginary folk" is Samo's preferred description, but the word "preferred" is doing some heavy lifting here. The band are more than happy to bust two myths that seem to have grown up in the last couple of years. First, this is not Slovenian traditional (or traditional Slovenian) music. It might be produced from and by each of the three landscapes in which the band were raised -- the Karst, the hills of Tolmin, the eastern plains of Prekmurje -- but unpicking what came from where is an impossible endeavor. That leads you to the second misconception: that Sirom are an improvisational band. For sure, improvisation is an indispensable part of the initial songwriting process; but it's an expression of their collective manner of working rather than any musical statement per se. Keen-eared listeners will hear a continuation of the last song on Clay Snapper (GB 051CD, LP) in the first song of the new record: a nod, perhaps, to the fact that they began work on the new record immediately after the last. But whatever has gone into the music, from the band's home landscapes to their previous and in some cases still current musical projects (classical, hardcore, flatlands post-rock), Sirom sound like no one else. The world of the new record -- A Universe that Roasts Blossoms for a Horse -- is indeed subtly different to that of the last: the viola still teases and tugs at the percussion and the banjo still periodically tries to break free and set up on its own, but there's a glimpse of electricity in "A Pulse Expels Its Brothers and Sisters", courtesy of Samo's homemade tampura bra?, more vocals, albeit as unsettling as ever, and a new sense of spaces being pried open.

VA Summer Hits Vol. 1 CD
The Press Group's newest volume is a most spitting image of what the label has been pushing since establishing four years ago: a sound both atmospheric but no short of danceable, equally geared toward oneiric mind-wandering and playful foot-shuffling sessions in the club. A bespoke sample of the Hamburg's imprint DNA, it also witnesses the growth of the featured artists both individually and as a collective of like-minded artists -- tirelessly experimenting, emulating, and re-inventing their own shared and personal creative universes under various configurations and aliases.Spinning out of the calibrated dance music's orbit, TPG here present no less than sixteen cuts courtesy of a wide array of mostly German talents, new and confirmed, capturing a much compelling snap of the common vision and idiosyncrasies of the parties involved. Obviously part of the trip, imprint mainstays Rupert Marnie and Youthman(29) each deliver a piece, slapping rhythmic and texturally ethereal as get (tell us that Youthman(29) jam hasn't got the taste of dreams), and so does Christoph Friedmann's jaunty tropical number, sure to awaken the shamelessly wiggly dancefloor operator in you, whilst the mysterious thcarp and Lehult boss Lucky Charmz wing out a pair of deep-diving workouts to get down to -- preferably with your aqualung on so you don't resurface blue-ish. Local players MF Earth Band and French border duo RBDP go spaced-out jazzy when ott goes in with a fruity sino squasher and Aii PS gives it's all in the gut-melting subs. Mischievous, off-kilter acid lovers take note, Dolomea's joint is the one. If you're in the train, though, we recommend taking Ben Oyefeso with you, as he's sure to have you drifting off the rails into his strangely familiar realm. If you're in need for some high-powered electro pumper, wobbly warbles ace Matthias Wagner's got you covered, but if it's bleepy, bloopy, blurpy post Hawtin'ian minimalism tinged with a solid hint of Dam Funk-esque synths, go check our buddy Walt Ever. More of an AFX and Autechre fan? No worries, geezer -- Europa's feeling, glitchy cybernetics are there to please and your senses will thank you for the journey. Antep Haze's synthetic bird calls and glaring chime-y streams will ease you into a much enticing last stretch across a fantasized forest of sorts, before the all-engulfing finale takes you well off into the galaxy's masters' own Area 51. Also features Primary Mystical Experience.

WIGGS, JOSEPHINE We Fall LP
Repressed; LP version. Alt-rock icon Josephine Wiggs is best known as bassist in The Breeders, rising to superstardom in the '90s and continuing to draw crowds and critical acclaim in the wake of their 2018 album All Nerve. But over the years, Wiggs has released several of her own albums, all of which delightfully defy genre. Her new solo record, We Fall, is both a departure and a distillation of an enduring personal aesthetic: moody and spare but also melodic, at once contemporary and nostalgic. Some influences are clear: We Fall is reminiscent of the experimentalism of Brian Eno's Another Green World (1975) and recalls the delicate, languid minimalism of Harold Budd. The album's classical inflections, sharpened by a dialog with electronic elements, evoke Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto. This is an album of juxtapositions: minimalist at moments, richly layered in others; ambient while also sharply focused; melancholy yet resolute. There's something both dreamy and scientific about We Fall. Wiggs, an enthusiastic amateur mycologist, has an impressive collection of mushrooms she's photographed in her travels. We Fall could be the soundtrack to what can't be captured in a single photo -- the growth and decay of miraculous creatures that a less astute and sensitive eye might overlook entirely. Composed, performed, and recorded by Wiggs, with drums and electronics by her longtime friend and collaborator Jon Mattock (Spacemen 3, Spiritualized), We Fall is a lyrical, bucolic album with an undercurrent of disquiet. Think of a wintertime walk in the woods as dusk falls too soon. True to the classic album form, the ten almost entirely instrumental tracks on We Fall form a compelling whole: a crystalline meditation on paths not taken and words unspoken, an elegy for moments lost and last embraces.

SOTELO, ROBERT Infinite Sprawling LP
Robert Sotelo is a cosmic pop melodist; a heartfelt multi-instrumentalist whose direct songs are curiously affecting. His debut album Cusp from 2017 (UTR 098LP) was packed with miniature psych overtures and earnest musings, he then followed this up in 2018 with an album called Botanical, more keyboard-minded and playful with its near-absurdist palette of sound and reflective mood. Upset The Rhythm release Sotelo's third album Infinite Sprawling, his first record since relocating from London to Glasgow and partly inspired by his new city's inclusive and collaborative musical world. Sotelo has always excelled at matching up the prosaic with the profound and on Infinite Sprawling he does this with aplomb. A collection of casual revelations, lifted out of the mundane, are explored throughout the album's ten sprightly tracks. "Something Besides" opens the record in blithe reverie, nodding over a country-twang guitar. "Mister" follows in lively attitude, splintering with spidery bursts of fuzz. Through a lyrical list of items in the breezy tumble of a song called "Battery" where Sotelo muses on the anxieties inherent in forging a new social life when you move city. A similar theme carried by "The Set Up" which deals with discovering his new neighbors' tropes, the track strolls into the sun with an echoed refrain. "Roof" and "In The Style Of" also boast this analytic quality, making sense of the world through its small things first, both unabashedly melodic with blushes of tremolo blushes and inventive arrangements. The title track refers to Sotelo's final trip to Buenos Aires as a regular excursion to visit his mother, it's a farewell to the city and makes for an interesting counterpoint to the other songs' new starts. "Piece Of Cake" meanwhile is a more brooding effort, essentially a contemplation on lacking culinary skill. Twisty wah guitar lines tag along with Sotelo's vocal, each tugging at the sleeve of the other, while tambourines and keyboard pulses resound over the clicky drum accents. This keenly robust album of new beginnings and strategies for living is quietly drawn to a close with "Message Of Beauty", a relaxed ballad of drowsy farewells, swoons of violin and swirled clouds of organ drone. Infinite Sprawling is an album born out of new friendships, in a new country and for all its feet-finding sounds confident and emphatically considered. Recorded with Ruari MacLean (of Vital Idles, Golden Grrrls) and Edwin Stevens (Irma Vep, Yerba Mansa) at their home studio Namaste Sound. 180 gram dark-green vinyl; reverse-board sleeve with lyric insert; edition of 300.

KAPUTT Carnage Hall LP
Kaputt are a recently hatched post punk act from Glasgow, Scotland. Numbering six, Kaputt feature Simone Wilson and Cal Donnelly on guitars and vocals, Chrissy Barnacle also sings and plays saxophone. Tobias Carmichael is responsible for bass, whilst Rikki Will and Emma Smith cover drums and percussion respectively. Racing away from the playful torn edge of no-wave song, Kaputt blurt out tracks with twitchy charisma, their catchy riffs circle with relish, allowing timely sax stonks and stop-start rhythms to drive things on. Vocals leap, guitars bluster and always the saxophone snakes, hypnotically drawn through the erratic beat. The songs on Carnage Hall, Kaputt's debut album released by Upset The Rhythm, were all written in Glasgow between 2016-2018. Following on from the independence referendum and the subsequent Brexit vote these songs couldn't help but be influenced by the maelstrom of political hypocrisy and confusion in the air. Other themes prevalent on this energetic corkscrew of an album include the offbeat happenchance of life in 2019, notions of surveillance, identity (personal as well as the biscuit-tin styled persona of the Scottish Highlands), industrialization, and family. Title track "Carnage Hall" is about an alternative dimension in which Judy Garland's famous Carnegie Hall show, (one of the group's favorite albums), was a total bust rather than the roaring success it proved to be. "Rats" is a crumpled twist of song -- explosive, ruminative, and content to bemuse with a loose political allegory drawn out from a dank pet shop. "Accordion" lilts with more breezy tendency. Kaputt excel at fidgety, speedy outpourings of ideas, their songs zap by, multifaceted and bejeweled with detail and color. "Parsonage Square" is a great example of this, it's a song about public access, panopticons, and paranoia hurtled into a motley rip of melody. Meanwhile, "Suspectette" concerns itself with Mary Weiss of The Shangri-Las' FBI file. "Think About Your Face" investigates those certain grimaces made in passionate embrace. "Highlight" is an grade-A anthem doubling up as an eulogy for shipbuilding, "Drinking Problems Continue" parts 1 and 2 are about Ullapool and generational holidays spent watching "sun set on the ferry". Carnage Hall is an empathic album dealing with memory and place, but most importantly with people. Recorded and mixed by Luigi Pasquini in Anchor Lane Studios in Glasgow in spring 2019, before being mastered this summer by John Hannon at No Studios. 180 gram vinyl; edition of 400.

GHANIA WITH PHAROAH SANDERS, MALEEM MAHMOUD The Trance Of Seven Colors 2LP
Zehra present The Trance Of Seven Colors by master Gnawa musician Maleem Mahmoud Ghania and free jazz legend Pharoah Sanders, available on vinyl for the very first time. Originally released in 1994 on Bill Laswell's Axiom imprint, and produced by Bill Laswell, The Trance Of Seven Colors is the meeting of two true musical masters. Maleem Mahmoud Ghania (1951-2015), son of the master of Gnawa music Maleem Boubker Ghania and the famous clairvoyant and "moqaddema", A'isha Qabral, and a master of the traditional Gnawa style in his own right. Mahmoud learned this craft as a youth along with his brothers, walking from village to village, performing ceremonies with his father Boubker and was one of the few masters (Maleem) who continued to practice the Gnawa tradition strictly for healing (the central ritual of the Gnawa is the trance music ceremony -- with the purpose of healing or purification of the participants). With 30 cassette releases of music from the Gnawa repertoire with his own ensemble and performances at every major festival in Morocco, including performing for the King in various contexts, Mahmoud Ghania was also one of Morocco's most prominent professional musicians. In 1994, Bill Laswell and Pharoah Sanders went to Morocco equipped with just some mobile recording devices to record Ghania and a large ensemble of musicians (a good portion being family members) in a very intimate set-up at a private house. Sanders, the legendary free jazz musician, contributed the distinctive tenor saxophone sounds that gained him highest praise as a truly spiritual soul right from the days of playing with John Coltrane and his wife Alice and on seminal solo albums, like Karma (1969). The aptly titled The Trance Of Seven Colors ranks among the best Gnawa recordings ever released, making it onto The Vinyl Factory's list of "10 incredible percussive albums from around the world". 25 years after its original CD release, it is finally available on vinyl. Remastered for vinyl and vinyl cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. 180 gram vinyl; comes in gatefold sleeve; includes download code. "One of the most important albums of Gnawa trance music released in the '90s." --The Attic "first-hand access to Gnawa healing ceremonial music" --All Music
