TWINS New Cold Dream LP
New Cold Dream is a thoughtful yet heartfelt amalgamation of dark electro, synth pop, and industrial dance music. "Lie Awake", an irresistibly classic dark-electro song underpinned by an infectious dance beat, embodies this balance perfectly. Past influences abound -- from John Maus to Bauhaus, from Suicide to Depeche Mode -- but this record lives distinctly in the present. For all its themes of fear and uncertainty brought on by the times we live in, New Cold Dream isn't a pessimistic record -- Matt Weiner seeks to embrace the unforgiving nature of these realities. Balancing optimism with cynicism, oscillating between hot and cold. This duality can be heard throughout the record -- from the foreboding refrain of "Slow Decline" to the sublime choral tones of "Misuse". Ominous, industrial beats offset dreamy synth melodies, while Weiner's fervid vocals reconcile tensions throughout: hot vs. cold, fear vs. courage, light vs. dark. Twins finds the similarities in what appear to be opposites, and invites you to do the same. "I want people to feel moved; both moved to get up and move and also moved in a deeper sense of connecting with ideas that may not have made sense before," Weiner says of his project. It's music for contemplating while dancing, for letting go while you hold on tight. As we grow tired of a world that deals in extremes, we wake up to a new cold dream." Comes on pink and white color vinyl.

ALDINUCCI, GIULIO No Eye Has An Equal LP
Opener "Brezza Perduti Arsi Tramonti" is an introspective composition, where fluttering soundscapes meld with soaring choral voices, contrasting with the darker post-rock atmospherics of "Mirages and Miracles", with distorted radio transmissions crackling through the heavy ether. The detuned, insistent bliss of "Meiosis, Remembrances" intertwines delicate piano with heavy synthesis, leading into the dubbed-out ambience of "Fuoco Lontano", heard inside a glassine chamber with a distant skyline twinkling in the background. The reworks -- meditations on meaning and perception -- showcase how an established body of work can be diversified, and how "[in] a world where many tend to create borders to contain people that share supposed homogenous features, music reminds us that diversity is the soul of humanity". RIYL: Steve Roach, Fennesz, Kara Lis Coverdale, William Basinski, Tim Hecker, Deepchord, the dronier moments of Godspeed You! Black Emperor. 180 gram vinyl.

RUSSELL, ARTHUR Instrumentals 2LP
2019 repress. "Remastered double LP with 12 page booklet including liner notes by Tim Lawrence, Ernie Brooks and Arthur Russell. All material previously released on the Audika CD compilation First Thought Best Thought (2006). Before disco, and before the transcendent echoes, Arthur wanted to be a composer. His journey began in 1972, leaving home in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Heading west to Northern California, Arthur studied Indian classical composition at the Ali Akbar Khan College of Music followed by western orchestral music at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, before ending two years later in New York at the Manhattan School of Music. Traversing the popular and the serious, Arthur composed Instrumentals in 1974, inspired by the photography of his Buddhist teacher, Yuko Nonomura, as Arthur described, 'I was awakened, or re-awakened to the bright-sound and magical qualities of the bubblegum and easy-listening currents in American popular music.' Initially intended to be performed in one 48 hour cycle, Instrumentals was in fact only performed in excerpts a handful of times as a work in progress. The legendary performances captured live in New York at The Kitchen (1975 and 1978) and Franklin St. Arts Center (1977) feature the cream of that eras downtown new music scene including Ernie Brooks, Rhys Chatham, Julius Eastman, Jon Gibson, Peter Gordon, Garrett List, Andy Paley, Bill Ruyle, Dave Van Tieghem, and Peter Zummo. Pitchfork lauded Instrumentals Vol. 1 as a masterpiece and one of Arthur's 'greatest achievements'. Americana touching on Copeland, Ives, and maybe even Brian Wilson. Instrumentals Vol. 2 is a moving, deeply pastoral work performed by the CETA Orchestra and conducted by Julius Eastman. Also included are two of Arthur's most elusive compositions, 'Reach One', and 'Sketch For Face Of Helen'. Recorded live in 1975 at Phill Niblock's Experimental Intermedia Foundation, 'Reach One' is a minimal, hypnotic ambient soundscape written and performed for two Fender Rhodes pianos. 'Sketch For Face Of Helen' was inspired by Arthur's work with friend and composer Arnold Dreyblatt, recorded with an electronic tone generator, keyboard and ambient recordings of a rumbling tugboat from the Hudson River. For this remastered vinyl edition, a key part of Arthur's musical life has been restored. The sparkling, multidimensional results take the listener closer to Arthur's coast-to-coast journey: his iconoclastic determination to combine pop and art music; and his desire to make music that would resonate in the present and, ultimately, across time."

WARREN, NICK Balance Presents The Soundgarden 2CD
In the space of just a few years since its inception, Nick Warren and his partner Petra's globetrotting concept The Soundgarden has grown to encompass a label, compilations, parties around the world, and a global radio show. From being one of the early defining pillars for progressive house in the mid-90s through to his beautiful work as one half of Way Out West, Warren is an electronic music mainstay. Bringing two discs of exclusive music, Warren explains: "On this album, I wanted to showcase some of my current favorite artists and reflect the more eclectic sound of The Soundgarden. I feel the secret with compilations is to try and choose music which has almost a timeless feel to it." On Rigooni's "Dreamed Numbers" gets the mix off to an early chug with its delicate plucked melodies and rolling groove, leading into the graceful strings of Bigasti & Balad's "With You". Aspen recalls Airdrawndagger-era Sasha as the mix find its feet unhurriedly. An exclusive Nick Warren & Nicolas Rada original "Balance" yields shimmering atmospheric touches and slivers of plucked guitar, with more musicality displayed through the melancholic piano chords of Draper's "Crystal Voyager". The mix continues to twist-and-turn through Emi Galvan's soaring "Embrace" and the arpeggiated groove of Baunder's "38 & 46" and Yoni Yarchi & Daniel Van Der Zwaag's "From Tel Aviv to Amsterdam" brings the mix to a blissed-out climax. The slo-mo graceful, slinky chug of Six's "Berlin" helps to get disc two going in more mellow tempo, with the chord stabs of Black 8's "Black Tiger" giving an almost Detroit feel to this early hypnotic section. The tempo builds as the haunting vocal of Dmitry Molosh's "Note" glides over percolating percussion. Another shimmering Nick Warren & Black 8 production "Dreamcatcher" arrives to give a contrast to the deep, introspective atmospheres that precede it. The languid funk of Eli Nissan's "Restricted Delusions" pushes the listener into a deeper state, before Audio Junkies & Hernan Cattaneo's remix of Stillhead's "Neu Kobenhaven" cuts through in stark fashion with its crystalline chime motif. Oliver & Tom's "Luly" makes for a perfect closer, its sweet xylophone and piano sounds making for a sublime moment. Also features A?rp, Synkro & Arovane, Scippo, Kamilo Sanclemente, Ewan Rill & K Loveski, Ben Archbold, Nico Szabo, Lerr, Armen Miran, Nichols, and No-No & Nobilis.

NANI & GURU Vovivizm Episode 2 LP
Duo by two members from Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O.: Kawabata Makoto "Speed Guru" (electric guitar, synthesizer) and Satoshima Nani (drums, sampler). Nani & Guru is a hyper-experimental, psychedelic astro-trance duo, spontaneously formed in February 2018 by guitarist Kawabata Makoto and drummer Satoshima Nani from Acid Mothers Temple. Their first album, Vovivizm, was recorded immediately and released on CD by the Acid Mothers Temple in March 2018 in a limited edition of 300. In May 2018, they made their live debut on a tour of Mexico, and subsequently played dates in Japan. The group's sound combines the experimental with the ecstatic, the rigorous experimentalism of contemporary classical composition with the groove of dance music. It is impossible to believe that their ultra-high speed, ultra-dense, ultra-massive particle cloud of sound is made by just two people. Vovivizm Episode 2 is the group's second album.

SARRY So LP
Japanese Ethereal drone pop duo of Fuji Yuki (vocals) and 821 (bass). Through Fuji Yuki's softly screamed vocals, gently echoing into madness, and 821's bass, which reaches for the innermost depths of the human heart, Sarry's music -- at times incantational, at times narrative -- explores the occult realm of sound that connects this world to the next. Sarry takes elements from various genres such as Buddhist ritual music, krautrock, dark ambient, drone, hardcore, and noise, and blending them into an original style of performance using only bass and vocals. Sarry stands out even in Osaka's underground scene -- the most unorthodox in all of Japan -- and has received praise from musicians at the forefront of the Japanese underground. The vocal style is including a little unusual singing approach -- minimal phrase repetition, voice drone, etc. Makoto Kawabata (Acid Mothers Temple) presents Fuji Yuki: "If it were possible to project sound through a crystal, it would probably sound something like this. Like a book of prophecy where multiple speculations are blended together, its intimations and allusions left obscure. And at the same time, it's like infringing some taboo by creating a rapport with memories of a distant, past life. Weird hymns that waver between curiosity and dread." For fans of Djong Yun (Popol Vuh), Lisa Gerrard.

ENBATTA'S TRIBE, MARK Mark Enbatta's Tribe LP
LP version. Bam Balam Records present Tribe from the great singer songwriter Mark Enbatta. Mark Enbatta is best known as the lead singer and guitarist of the psychedelic-garage band The Vietnam Veterans. Starting in 1982, an official split with The Vietnam Veterans was declared in 1987, but the members of the band never stopped working together under various names like the Curanderos, the Late Veterans, the Veterans, the Vietnam Chain, the Smiling Droopies, the Gitanes, or even on solo projects. Their audience never stopped calling them the Vietnam Veterans... There was nothing you could do about it! When Lucas Trouble died in 2016, Mark officially declared they wouldn't use the original band's name anymore. Lucas wasn't an original member but he was Mark's friend and partner in crime since the early days. The further psychedelic adventures of the Vietnam Veterans will now happen as the Tribe. Same singer/songwriter, two former members of the VV's and a new bassist. The Tribe's first album is maybe darker than what people could expect but Mark wrote it during Lucas Trouble's agony. Five years after A Fistful of Love (2014), here is another trip inside haunted human minds. Some bad trips give special emotions... Songs about love, friendship, death, secrets, fakes, time, treasons, life, Polly Ticks and (what a surprise!) sex...

MULLER, MICHAEL A. Lower River LP
Beacon Sound presents Lower River, the debut solo album by Michael A. Muller. Conceptually, the album explores the place where time, space, and self are occluded -- a field of pure energy and creation similar to "the flow" or Zen state where ideas stream without impediment. Inspired by Muller's own remote travels throughout the US and Europe and the personal exploration of a meditative practice, it's a sonic exploration of what it means to deeply listen versus to merely hear, to immerse oneself in navigating the subconscious plane of pure energy and deep, immersive creativity. In 2006, multi-instrumentalist Muller co-founded the Austin-based ensemble Balmorhea; over 13 years he has co-led the group through six full-length records, numerous EPs, global tours, and original scores and worldwide track placements. Lower River began as a sound experiment in 2018 spanning from the isolated Oregon coast to rural Southern Italy and remote fishing villages in the South of France. With a tape recorder in hand, Muller chronicled his journeys through sound, contemplating along the way what it means to deeply listen amid a modern narrative underwritten by distraction. Merging his field recordings with original compositions recorded in his home studio in Austin, Lower River is a sonic venture into other worlds and into the depths of one's own mind; a study in engaging with sounds that don't easily slot into pre-existing notions of what an album "ought" to be. The final composition includes works by avant bass clarinetist Jonathan Siela (Golden Retriever), vocals by Heather Woods Broderick (known for work with Sharon Van Etten and Efterklang), and abstract double bass and cello by Balmorhea's Sam Pankey and Elan Green, respectively. The album cover art was made by renowned Dutch photographer Awoiska Van Der Molen. Includes download code and Riso print.

RATOS DE PORAO Crucificados Pelo Sistema LP
2019 repress. Ratos De Porão's Crucificados Pelo Sistema (1984) contains all the fury, the frustration, the rage and the pain of four young ones against the system in a country that was in the midst of a change from Third World to trying to fitting into a new social order. The projected image of Brazil with its beautiful mulatas, exotic beaches and tropical fruit drinks filled them with disgust, living there in one of the most dangerous cities in Latin America. Their reality was brutal and they wanted to scream it at the entire world. Sixteen songs were formed on the same base as what would later be called "D-beat." The Finnish bands from the '80s were really important in the Brazilian punk scene, just as Discharge was. Simple, fast and straight to the point. Two classic songs have been added for this special occasion, recorded for the classic Ataque Sonoro compilation (which also contains Brazilian pioneers such as Virus 27, Colera, Armagedom or Lobotomia, amongst others). 180 gram vinyl. Housed in a gatefold with pics and musings by Gordo. Reissued by Beat Generation.

Obsessed with vintage synthesizers and '80s beats, Mind Enterprises has created a sound which is somehow both forward thinking and nostalgic at the same time. Think Italo disco meets retro dance, with razor sharp modern production, and you're half-way there. "Monogamy", coupled with its '80s style VHS video is designed to make your feet move and your heart long for simpler times. DOUM & THE FARYDS, AL Positive Force LP
LP version. 2019 repress of the second album by Italian band Al Doum And The Faryds. The Positive Force LP is a collaboration between Black Sweat Records and Julia Dream Recordings. The music is the result of combining psychedelic music (first of all, Krautrock) and ethnic sounds; also using ethnic instruments such as darbuka, mbira, Tibetan bells, rhaita, and sitar to create a good ear-trip. This is what has been written about them by Julian Cope: "This fucking righteously Out There declaration comes on like a lobotomized Xhol Caravan meets Shiva's Tongue meets one of those low, low-grade reggae recording bands like Ras Michael & The Sons Of Negus, all jamming-ah on the 100° Fahrenheit obsidian-strewn plains of Southern Sardinia. Yes, it's hot. Throughout these proceedings, therefore, mucho Arabian percussion is shaken and kicked, much soul-clapping is embarked upon, and several times repeated Middle Eastern flute'n'sax themes of extreme unmemorability perk up then dwindle with an almightily stoned purposelessness. All quite exquisite. And although arid M. Karoli EBow occasionally flames up to provide a vast horizon of cosmick beauty, the Faryds' main themes always remain so VU-crunchy and agricultural down at their 'What bottom end?,' that even the off-kilter lipping of their sub-sub-Madness/Faust-style sax warbler appears sumptuous by disc's end. A fuck of a journey, kiddies, you gots to hear these cosmic jokers on repeat in order best to witness the dissolving of your immediate world."

MOON ON THE WATER Moon On The Water LP
LP version. Moon On The Water is a mysterious sound aurora on the magical paths of the infinite universe of percussion, originally released in 1985 and then almost completely lost. The well-educated drummer Tiziano Tononi, together with David Searcy and Jonathan Scully, while working at the temple of classical music Teatro alla Scala in Milano decided to realize a personal compendium of sounds using only percussion instruments. The recordings offer an amazing concert of sounds with acoustic purity in perfect balance between wild rhythm and deep relaxation. Ecstatic elements of Japanese ambient minimalism dialogue with contemporary music solutions (Varese, Ligeti) in the stream of a harmonious fusion of ancient and modern. It's a propitiatory ceremony of supernatural things that opens portals of blissfulness, tribal and shamanic darkness, and timeless jungles. Between Amazon fires and African safaris, one floats in Asian rivers of meditation, gets lost in water games, hears echoes of caves and rocks in the night, synergies of frogs, birds, snakes, marimbas, chimes, gongs, and tubular woods.

KREIDLER Flood LP
LP version. Thomas Klein, Alexander Paulick, Andreas Reihse, and Detlef Weinrich assembled in Düsseldorf in winter of 2018 for recordings, and then continued with further sessions in Berlin. Starting with around a dozen sketches, the band produced eight pieces, including "Flood I-IV" and "Flood V", an ensemble of five songs that -- in LP terms -- fills the entire second side of the album. But let's start from the beginning. Side One -- still speaking in LP terms -- begins pleasantly enough with the gentle roll and slight murmur of "Eurydike". Borrowed from Greek mythology, the title refers to the pretense of affection as a means of abandonment. The wistful saxophone, the bass notes, the slight trembling in the sound all speak of her awakening from disillusion. "Celeration", the second piece, seems to accelerate. But the pace of "Eurydike" is actually maintained. The tone becomes sharper, the rhythm creaky, the rolling more energetic, the sequence calls for a sacrifice. A shimmy, a scuttle, a quarter step: "Nesindano". The voice you hear is Khoes, alias Nesindano Namises; the language we hear is Khoekhoe/Damara. A gong, a CR-78 joins, a clicking, a flicker, words flutter, a bass booms, the voice rises up to the hook line, an FM synthesizer picks up the pieces and carries them along, percussion rattles. Agit-Pop! "Flood I-IV" is not about modesty or humility. It calls for always demanding the maximum --of oneself and for oneself -- which also means to give, and that each may set their own limits while respecting others, accepting them and helping where help is needed. Ricardo Domeneck takes on "Flood II" while looking out over the sea in Brazil, his feet in the sand for a few minutes, recalling a conversation with a geologist. "Flood I-IV" involves synthesizers, strings, rusty percussion, guitars enter into dialogue, a collaborative negotiation, a swelling and descending, a showering in transparent layers, banging on shore, heads are rolling, liquefying hierarchies not structures. "Flood IV" is a dance that flows into "Flood V", taking with it its instrumentation and mood, and moving it into a state between an easy-elegiac thoughtfulness and a concentrated contemplation. Kreidler, this four-headed hydra of a continental pop music that captures Bach, disco, postpunk, club, and krautrock in varying proportions with an elegant lightness. On Flood the band playfully expands its approach with two renowned voices.

OTTO Over The Top Orchester LP
LP version. A living room somewhere in southern Germany. Embroidery graces the walls, a veneer side table with little chrome feet stands in front of a beige velour sofa, a minibar awaits. Pride of place goes to the electric organ which majestically occupies the center of the room, flanked by two oversized loudspeakers. Welcome to the world of OTTO. The duo comprising Alexander Arpeggio and Cid Hohner released their debut 12"-single -- Greatest Hits -- on the Dutch label Charlois in 2016. It sounded fresh, with abundant references to old school electronic organ music. The recordings were made in Cid Hohner's home studio with the aid of various dusty electronic keyboard instruments, the most important of which was a home organ from the early 1980s -- with integrated auto bass and rhythm patterns, of course. In 2017, OTTO finally dragged their organs on stage to unleash their live set. A second disc (self-released) soon followed. The cover image of a German allotment garden anti-idyll under grey skies reflects the darker tone of Full Auto, the music driven forwards by a 1960s drum machine. OTTO headed for the grimy bars and stages of Europe to perform their new creations. A third 12" appeared in 2018. Stimmungen was released with the support of Orgaton, the society for the promotion of organ music. The cover could be an advertisement for a debt collection agency. Inside: bewilderingly danceable rap, a beguiling ballad, smooth as silk. Once again, OTTO defined the contours of their own organ-disco genre. And there's no stopping them now: the two-man band are set to release their long-awaited debut album in 2019 on Bureau B. The eight tracks contain familiar OTTO ingredients, from organ sounds and rhythm presets to disco strings and the monophonic waves of a 1970s synthesizer. Arpeggio and Hohner notes add extra sharpness to the proceedings. Classics from their live repertoire sit alongside brand-new numbers, invariably strange synthesizer compositions. Looking at the cover, one might be forgiven for thinking that OTTO have finally achieved their goal of establishing themselves as a renowned wedding dance band. The track titles hint at such reveries: champagne on the red carpet, riding a noble horse, fire-eaters, the delirious morning after -- OTTO offer a bouquet of hits which one cannot refuse. In their own words: "I wish it were just a dream."

BLENNER, SERGE La Vogue LP
LP version. Bureau B present a reissue of Serge Blenner's La Vogue, originally released in 1980. Music for the apocalyptic eighties Deutschland state of mind. When Serge Blenner left his native France for Hamburg, West Germany, neither he nor anyone else could have guessed that he would inadvertently compose a soundtrack for the Cold War. But his dark, monotone synthesizer album La Vogue turned out to be just that. Blenner was born in 1955 in Alsace, the easternmost region of France. He studied composition and harmony at the Conservatoire de Mulhouse. He loved listening to electronic music from the Berlin School: Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel/Manuel Göttsching, whom he got to know when they played in Alsatian churches and chapels. Blenner the proselyte had seen enough to realize: it was time to move to Germany, whence this music came. The year was 1975. He soon began experimenting with electronic music himself and graduated to live performances by 1978 and finally settled in Hamburg in 1979. One of the most important electronic music labels of the period, Sky Records, was based in Hamburg. Within the space of six months, Blenner had recorded the tracks which would become La Vogue and sent them to Sky Records. A deal was done and La Vogue was officially released before the year ended. The record was a resounding success, some tracks even made it onto the radio -- crucially, aired at hours of the day when significant numbers of listeners were tuning in. The longest track on La Vogue by far clocks up to nearly nine minutes, a rarity in Blenner's oeuvre, well outside his usual range of three-to-five minutes. La Vogue is an album of two halves. Through the first four tracks, Blenner still seems to be searching for his own style, beginning with the minimalistic, rather somber fanfare of "Phrase I" built around a single melodic pattern. Next up is the almost poppy, harmonically rich "Phrase II", followed by the spherical "Phrase III" and the crystalline, chiming "Phrase IV". If the first four cuts are linked only by heterogeneity, tracks five to eight are very much of a piece. Together they represent a frosty, menacing soundtrack worthy of the apocalyptic mood which hung over the early 1980s, particularly in West Germany. With Cold War angst at its peak, many people feared a Soviet nuclear attack was imminent.

BLENNER, SERGE Magazin Frivole LP
LP version. Bureau B present a reissue of Serge Blenner's Magazin Frivole, originally released in 1981. Cold, concise analog synthesizer instrumentals -- on his second album Serge Blenner remained true to his style, albeit shifting course slightly towards pop territory. The juxtaposition of dark harmonies and pop structures is what makes this album so appealing. In places, it feels like a blueprint for early Depeche Mode. Having seen his first album La Vogue (BB 324CD/LP) snapped up by the Sky Records and fast-tracked for release in 1980, Blenner delivered his second LP, Magazin Frivole, the following year. Mindful of the success of its predecessor, Blenner added the name of his debut in big letters to the front cover of the new sleeve. Blenner remained faithful to his musical style, albeit adding more of a pop flavor. Magazin Frivole would not look out of place filed alongside Depeche Mode on the record shelf, as a certain resemblance is undeniable. Moreover, Blenner was one of the few proponents of electronic music who preferred to keep his songs concise, in contrast to the meandering odysseys of many of his electronic contemporaries. The far better-known French artist Jean-Michel Jarre adhered to similar principles, yet although Blenner was often compared to his compatriot, he claims only to have heard his music long after La Vogue had appeared. Minor chords dominate his harmonies, the bass performs octave leaps which mirror the zeitgeist. Unexpected key changes abound, adding a restless, almost disquieting quality. Overall, Magazin Frivole is less dark than the preceding album, but a picture of cheerfulness it is not. Nevertheless, a poppy drum computer introduces a lighter note. From the very first track, chord changes pop up at unexpected junctures -- they seem to come in prematurely, before harmonic sequences have run their course. Blenner doesn't have any explanation for this curiosity, other than to note that "most of the music was played by hand, so of course it wasn't all perfect." "I did all I could to avoid being successful -- on a subconscious level, at least. Unpredictable metrics and irregular beats were definitely part of the process," Blenner admits with an enigmatic smile. Juxtaposed with Blenner's more recent works, one can see what he means. His latest album Musique de Chambre (2008) comprises modern classical chamber music, built on digitally sampled real instruments. Besides, Blenner points out, handling all of those analog devices was a convoluted and complex undertaking.

The dozen classic cuts, curated and recorded under the aegis of heavyweight reggae producer Delroy Williams, transcend any superficial notions of simply reworking much loved songs to provide them with a new technological polish for the modern age, rather they represent a triple helix; combining the intertwined personal, cultural, and political history that delineates a life, its work, and the contexts that have shaped it. New Stereo recordings of the original songs including booklet containing interview with Derrick Morgan by Dick Porter."

PLANETARY ASSAULT SYSTEMS Live at Cocoon Ibiza CD
2019's highly anticipated Live at Cocoon Ibiza mix is helmed by techno legend Luke Slater under his Planetary Assault Systems guise. As Planetary Assault Systems, UK titan Luke Slater has constantly laid down a blueprint for the future of techno. As a live performer he is a visionary who fuses mind melting minimalism, catchy cyborg funk and cinematic soundscapes that really take you on a trip. He did that once again back in July as part of Cocoon's 20th anniversary season and now the results are laid down on CD for the label to relive the magic. Over the course of eighty spellbinding minutes, Slater truly captivates with evocative sci-fi imagery and high-class melodic minimalism, smoothly shifting from moments of high-pressure drum-funk intensity to uplifting and spiritual passages of cosmic sound and back again. Along the way, he digs deep into his back catalog to serve up plenty of golden oldies as well as more contemporary cuts, and the whole thing melts together into a timeless set that explores the outer edges of techno with huge amounts of both style and substance.

2019 repress on transparent turquoise vinyl. Songs Of Love & Lust was originally released by Rough Trade Records in 1984 and at the time was considered to be quite a departure for both Chris & Cosey and Rough Trade. The album contains Chris & Cosey's trademark infectious rhythms, melodic tunes, edgy guitar, wailing cornet and of course Cosey's unique vocals -- which give a dark and sensual edge to the production. Includes a glossy insert with historic photographs and press clippings."A vice-like turn of the screw that is at once dreamy, hard and compelling. A gathering of all those forces which give electronic music a heart of its own. This is seduction!" --Adrian Jones (City Limits, 1984)"Chris & Cosey's alluring invitation is to try another world: their promise is that the possibilities should be endless." --Don Watson (NME, 1984)

Includes a glossy insert with historic photographs and press clippings."Chris & Cosey beat most of 87's mainstream dance-floor contenders on their own territory of sheer pleasure, urged joy. 'BeatBeatBeat' is extreme, a revelation." --Ian Gittins (Melody Maker, 1987)"Chris & Cosey have made a great dance record, but it's their kind of dancing. No junk here. TUNES OF NEGATION Reach The Endless Sea 2LP
Shackleton works up a hypnotic group energy alongside avant-goddess Heather Leigh, percussionist Takumi Motokawa, and mallet player Raphael Meinhart in their debut as Tunes Of Negation for Shapednoise's label; Cosmo Rhythmatic. Reach The Endless Sea is a heady blast of lysergic, chromatic color, and syncopated rhythms that partly imagines an alternative musical timeline where the Hawkwind and Ash Ra Tempel fans, proto-Humanoid types, and new age travelers who made up the UK's rave vanguard prevailed against the law to enact a freely psychedelic dance music. The album follows in the vein of Shackleton's previous trio of vocal-focused trips for Honest Jon's and his Woe To The Septic Heart! label to find the mystic pied piper's spirit bolstered and tempered by a collaborative, multi-directional flow of energies. Gushing in five durational parts running between 10-15 minutes each -- or long enough to draw listeners into their dilated temporality -- the music comes in waves of pointed, timeless intensity, and illusory suggestion, subtly shifting pattern with an acid-dosed logic. Following her triumphant Throne LP in 2018 (EMEGO 257CD/LP), Heather Leigh provides sacral vocals to the canto couplet of "The World Is A Stage" and "Reach The Endless Sea", providing an elevated constant between its moiré of possessed vibes and lilting rhythms, before the trio of instrumentalists take the reins on a mazy trajectory between the harmonic lather of "Tundra Erotic", through the sanguine meditation of "Nowhere Ending Sky", and an epic, 15-minute invocation of ancient Indian raga traditions and mountaintop kosmiche in "Ruckschlag Rising Then Resonant", before they all come down together in the Amazonian delta flow and oozing sprawl of "The Time Has Come". While no single description will sum up the potency and conviction of Tunes Of Negation, their mission can be summed in a line from a poem by 13th C. mystic Jalalu'I-Din Rumi which inspired the album's title, stating that Reach The Endless Sea strives to "aid transmutation and enter into the light." Artwork by Zeke Clough. Mastered by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Gatefold sleeve.

VA Legends Of Country 2CD
32-track double-CD with all big names of country, including Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson, Johnny Paycheck, Freddy Fender, Faron Young, and the ladies of Kitty Wells, Crystal Gayle, Patsy Cline, Lynn Anderson, and more. Country music, also known as country and western (or simply country), and hillbilly music, is a genre of popular music that originated in the southern United States of America in the early 1920s. It takes its roots from genres such as American folk music (especially Appalachian folk and Western music) and blues. Country music often consists of ballads and dance tunes with generally simple forms, folk lyrics, and harmonies mostly accompanied by string instruments such as banjos, electric and acoustic guitars, steel guitars (such as pedal steels and dobros), and fiddles as well as harmonicas. Blues modes have been used extensively throughout its recorded history. According to Lindsey Starnes, the term country music gained popularity in the 1940s in preference to the earlier term hillbilly music; it came to encompass Western music, which evolved parallel to hillbilly music from similar roots, in the mid-20th century. In 2009 in the United States, country music was the most listened to rush hour radio genre during the evening commute, and second most popular in the morning commute. The term country music is used today to describe many styles and subgenres. The origins of country music are found in the folk music of working-class Americans, who blended popular songs, Irish and Celtic fiddle tunes, traditional English ballads, cowboy songs, and the musical traditions of various groups of European immigrants. Also features Moe Bandy, Exile, Johnny Lee, Pam Tillis, Donna Fargo, Janie Fricke, Juice Newton, Jack Greene, Billie Dean, Merle Haggard, Mark Wills, Doug Stone, T.G. Sheppard, Ferlin Husky, and Lacy J. Dalton.

VA Domestic Sampler UMYU LP
2017 release. Discos Transgénero presents the first ever reissue of the Domestic Sampler UMYU, originally released in 1982. Domestic Sampler was a project that Víctor Nubla (former member of Macromassa) recorded for the record label UMYU. It features a host of artists; a synergy of the scene that was happening in Barcelona at the beginning of the eighties. El Grito Acusador, Entr'Acte, Logotipo, Klamm, Secreto Metro, Error Genético, Detra's Band 10, Boris, Mimi Pimer, and Tres reflected the new wave underground scene of Catalan groups who revolved around Víctor Nubla as the mystic center of their universe. Nevertheless, Domestic Sampler also represents a confluence between English and Spanish underground culture since Jim Whelton and Bing Selfish, who originated in The Homosexuals and The Murphy Federation, were living in Spain when they met Víctor Nubla. They hovered around the same scene in which projects such as Milk From Cheltenham, Amos & Superslicks, and The Hostiapaths were engendered. The LP was recorded at Sonitec Studio (aka Gomis 42) where Víctor used to work. By day the studio was used to record music for the mainstream, advertisements or porn, but by night Víctor recorded underground bands, thus spending days in Sonitec Studio and nights in UMYU Studio. All the bands involved worked in a very collaborative way; after all, they were sharing the instruments. The cost of the recording was divided by the minutes that would fit onto the disc and each group paid for the time that they were using, subsequently receiving a total of discs proportional to what they paid. The album was never openly distributed through record stores; the bands distributed it by themselves. Domestic Sampler UMYU is a tremendously exciting and unrepeatable record that fully captures the creativity, anarchism, and counter-cultural effervescence that emerged in Spain during the post-Franco period. Includes fanzine insert with detailed liner notes created by Bing Selfish (El Frenzy Productions). Texts written by Víctor Nubla, Juan Crek, Juanjo Sanchez, Jim Whelton, and Bing Selfish.

MANCHESTER MEKON, THE No Forgetting The Album LP
2017 release. The Manchester Mekon were a group of musicians that were active from the end of the '70s to the beginning of the '80s in Manchester. Influenced by Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, Igor Stravinsky, King Crimson, Maurice Revel, Pink Floyd, the Manchester Mekon aimed to integrate composed and improvised music, blending orchestral and electronic sounds with rock, both live and in the studio. Over a period of five years (1977-1982), the Manchester Mekon played about fifty gigs in and around Manchester, released seven tracks on local labels and rehearsed once a week. This album covers their entire career, contains the full range of music they played and includes live recordings, studio recordings, home recordings, and even rehearsals. Two tracks were previously only available on Manchester Musicians' Collective compilation albums. Some were never released, until now. For the first time in 40 years these tracks are released on vinyl, in a full-color sleeve (using original artwork from the time), with a 16-page booklet (also in color) with photographs, artwork, introduction to the band and a piece by Jon Dale about The Manchester Mekon and their times.

GELUIDSHOUWERIJ/HOW TO GET RICH IN ROTTERDAM D.A.P.A. / Oefening Kunstbaardt in Rotterdam LP
2018 release. Discos Transgénero presents the first ever compilation of How To Get Rich In Rotterdam, Oefening Kunstbaardt, and D.A.P.A. These were projects of Chris Lindquist and Paul Stoute with the collaboration of Linda Lindquist, all of whom were based in Rotterdam in the early '80s. How To Get Rich In Rotterdam was a group formed by Chris Lindquist and Paul Stoute, releasing only one self-titled seven-inch. This single was a very limited edition with two different covers. Johan Kugelberg selected HTGRIR for his Top 100 DIY Singles, describing it as "brilliant, plodding art-slop that reeks of inside jokedom. This record is a reason unto itself to pay eBay prices for vintage drum machines." Oefening Kunstbaardt and D.A.P.A. were the names of two albums that Chris created in his studio named Geluidshouwerij. The first one included the participation of Paul and the second one was done only by Chris. Following an experimental and avant-garde line, these were only released as cassettes. After restoring the sound from the original master tapes, this compilation presents these classic DIY recordings from Chris and Paul for the first time on vinyl in high quality audio. The cover design and illustrations are by René & Paul Stoute. So, come back to the beginning of the eighties, back to the so-called cassette period where people started making music recordings in their living rooms with equipment that was in reach. If you are interested in something different you should pay attention to this album with its imaginary kaleidoscope of strange, experimental, and sometimes funny tunes.

ZAPPA & THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION, FRANK Transmission Impossible 3CD
"Emerging from the L.A. R 'n' B scene during 1964, Frank Zappa's first wave Mothers Of Invention signed to Verve Records in 1966, the same year their debut album, Freak Out, was released. Followed by a string of eclectic, experimental, critically acclaimed records, Zappa disbanded the group in 1969. During this first incarnation, MOI toured frequently both at home and overseas, with many of their most interesting performances recorded for FM radio broadcast. This set brings together a number of these recordings with Disc One featuring Mothers shows at Stockholm in 1967 and New York in 1968. Disc Two includes their show given in Toronto in February 1969, just prior to the initial line-up's demise. MOGARD, ABUL Kimberlin LP
Visionary synthesist Abul Mogard renders a darkly sublime soundtrack for Duncan Whitley's Kimberlin, an experimental film about the Isle of Portland on the English south coast, which coincidentally doubles up as metaphor for the mood of an increasingly inward-looking UK. Taking its name from the local word for an outsider or "foreigner", the short film Kimberlin was filmed on location during the months following the advisory referendum of 2016 which lead to the current, purgatory state of "Brexit". Combining mostly wordless, lingering shots of the Isle of Portland's bleak and rugged landscape with Abul Mogard's washed-out but richly evocative music, made with manipulated field recordings, modular synth and layered Farfisa organ, the project came to reflect a sense of (be)longing, loneliness, and outsiderness that also perhaps uncannily mirrors the putative collective feeling since that darkly historic vote, over three years ago. Taking cues from the evocative poetry of lifelong islander, stonemason and poet Cecil "Skylark" Durston (1910-1996), as well as a news report on the discovery of a mysterious cinema found interred by foliage in the Isle's cave systems, the merging of image and sound speak to their subject in an organic, impressionistic manner that leaves billowing room for imagination. Mogard's soundtrack opens out with a slow-burning, greyscale iridescence, tenderly manipulating the sound of fog horns and bird calls in briny modular spray and gloaming Farfisa organ swells that, when combined with song titles such as "Flooding Tide" and "Playing On The Stones", serve to evocatively connote the film's subject matter. The results can be heard as echoes in the digital future of an England that's now difficult to grasp, most hauntingly transposing the meaning of Cecil "Skylark" Durston's description of the Isle of Portland as a place where "quarry bells no longer ring, except in old men's dreams" to the ever-present, never-ending riddle of Brexit and its generationally devastating bleakness. RIYL: Thomas Köner, My Bloody Valentine, William Basinski. Mastered and cut at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Edition of 500.

LEMER, PETER Son of Local Colour: Live at the Pizza Express, Soho CD
The core of this group -- John Surman, Alan Skidmore, Peter Lemer, Tony Reeves, and Jon Hiseman -- recorded an LP titled Local Colour for ESP-Disk' in 1966 (ESPDISK 1057CD/LP). The plan, conceived the year after the 50th anniversary of the recording session, was to reunite the original quintet, which had existed for six months back in '66, but unfortunately Nisar Ahmad (George) Khan, tenor saxophonist on the original album, came down with something and couldn't appear. Alan Skidmore (Lemer bandmate in SOS) was deputized and, as all familiar with his career would expect and you will hear, came through with flying local colors at the concert on February 20, 2018 at noted London jazz club Pizza Express. Four months later, Jon Hiseman passed away at age 73 after battling a brain tumor. Five of the original album's six compositions are reprised, but with more room to stretch out on them in the concert context. New to Lemer's ESP discography are Lemer's tribute to British saxophonist/frequent Lemer bandmate Dick Heckstall-Smith, "Big Dick"; Surman's "URH"; and a wild interpretation of Coltrane's "Impressions". Personnel: John Surman - baritone and soprano saxophones; Alan Skidmore - tenor saxophone; Peter Lemer - piano; Tony Reeves - double bass; Jon Hiseman - drums.

VA New Improvised Music from Buenos Aires CD
ESP-Disk' has a little bit of history with Argentina -- the label issued Gato Barbieri's first international release (ESPDISK 1049CD), and their Steve Lacy album was recorded there -- so the label couldn't resist putting out this compilation of 2012-17 recordings (most previously unreleased) from the Buenos Aires scene. In his liner notes, compiler Jason Weiss writes, "In June 1966, just as General Juan Carlos Onganía was leading a military coup d'état, Steve Lacy's quartet arrived in Buenos Aires: not exactly safe harbor for free jazz. Despite opposition the group gained a small following, appearing on television, at a museum, in private homes, but they couldn't earn enough for their return flights. When the quartet -- Lacy, Enrico Rava, Johnny Dyani, Louis Moholo, a supergroup in retrospect -- played at the venerable Instituto di Tella, whose experimental music center was directed by the composer Alberto Ginastera, Lacy instructed the group to do two free improvised sets of twenty minutes each; it proved to be their only document of the whole adventure, released by ESP the following year as The Forest and the Zoo (ESPDISK 1060CD)." And now? Weiss says, "As in European and American cities, the music survives on a DIY homemade spirit to subvert conventions and construct a kind of presence. But the struggle is waged against greater odds," not least because "in recent years the city government has cracked down on the modest cultural clubs found in most neighborhoods where a mix of artistic events would be held, regulating them instead on the same terms as larger, single-purpose venues. Many places couldn't afford to stay open, while others became more clandestine." It is not a scene that has managed to receive the international attention it deserves. Fortunately, Weiss provides plenty more context, biographical info, and quotes from scene stalwarts in his extensive essay in the album's 16-page booklet.Features Pablo Díaz Quinteto, Rulemares, Luis Conde--Ramiro Molina Duo, Agustí Fernández--Pablo Ledesma--Mono Hurtado, Duquesa (Fabiana Galante--Luis Conde), Christof Kurzmann, Norris Trio, Paula Shocron, Data Peluda, Enrique Norris--Paula Shocron, Cinética, Leonel Kaplan--Pablo Ledesma--Mono Hurtado, and Fulgor al bies.

RADICAL EMPATHY TRIO Reality and Other Imaginary Places CD
This album was recorded during Thollem McDonas's 2017 residency at Brooklyn-based multi-discipline mecca Pioneer Works. It's the second by Radical Empathy, which combines three uncategorizable improvisors. Michael Wimberly has been astonishing folks since his days in Charles Gayle bands and Steve Coleman & Five Elements in the early '90s, and has gone on become a composer and educator of note. Nels Cline has spent decades changing people's ideas about the role of the electric guitar in multiple contexts, ranging from Wilco to Anthony Braxton (think about that!) as well as many projects as a leader; this is his fourth album in trio with Thollem, and a fifth will follow in 2020, also on ESP-Disk. Some people have given ESP-Disk' flak (and "flak" was not the first word choice here) about putting out Thollem McDonas albums. "He's not in the jazz tradition," they say, and even though their idea of the jazz tradition includes Albert Ayler; ESP-Disk' think that this album will make their little, closed minds explode. The heavy electronic sound of the first track, with its swathes of distortion, put it very much in noise territory, with Wimberly contributing coloristic accents and heavier flurries of rhythmic activity. After the twenty uncompromising minutes of "Collective Tunnels", for "Conscious Tunnels" Cline switches to a guitar tone John Abercrombie wouldn't shy away from and Thollem sits down at an acoustic piano (for a while) -- though their free improvisation is just as uncompromising. The timbres cease pacifying jazzers when blippy 1950s electronic sounds slinkily slither from the speakers. Then the piano comes back, but the guitar's tone gets dirty. Genre boundaries are crushed underfoot as the moods continue to vary wildly as "Conscious Tunnels" covers an amazing breadth of timbres and textures. Personnel: Thollem McDonas - keyboards; Nels Cline - electric guitars; Michael Wimberly - drums. Recorded by Justin Frye at Pioneer Works, Brooklyn, NY Sept. 13, 2017.

MAUNICK, DANIEL Macumba Quebrada CD
From Far Out Recordings' in-house producer, Daniel Maunick's debut solo album Macumba Quebrada conjures scenes of collective hedonism from start to finish. Spanning Afro-Brazilian spiritual dance ceremonies, late-80s Detroit techno parties, and jungle and broken beat raves in '90s London, Maunick celebrates our instinctive, age-old desire to come together and lose our sense of self. Daniel Maunick practically grew up behind the mixing desk. As the son of Brit-funk legend Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick (of Incognito fame), he found himself immersed in music from an early age, and quickly became involved in London's drum n' bass, acid-jazz, house, broken beat, and soul scenes, releasing his first production at the age of sixteen on Gilles Peterson and Norman Jay's Talkin' Loud label. Since then, he has produced albums by the likes of Azymuth, Marcos Valle, Terry Callier, Incognito, Ivan "Mamao" Conti, and Sabrina Malheiros. Reflecting his dual residence between Rio de Janeiro and East London, Macumba Quebrada features deep house stompers and broken bangers littered with Brazilian rhythms -- in the form of both dusty percussion and Maunick's intricate drum programming. But the album sees Daniel draw inspiration from across the black music continuum, and the rich histories of communal celebration in Detroit techno, Chicago house, London D'n'B, and New York disco. Bringing all this together in explosive peak-time club tracks, moments of eerie ambience, South American swing and tribal earthiness, Macumba Quebrada expands on Maunick's recent vinyl-only EPs A Vicious Circle and Sombra Do Dragao. Taking its title from a syncretism of South American spiritual practices, the cover art is photograph taken by acclaimed French photographer and self-taught ethnographer Pierre Verger, who traveled the world documenting civilizations that would soon be effaced by progress. Settling for good in Salvador, Brazil, Verger became initiated into the Candomblé religion, eventually officiating rituals and ceremonies within the community. Without having become an ordained priest, Daniel Maunick shares both Verger and Far Out Recordings' love for Brazil: its people, its culture, and its music.

DE DIONYSO, ARRINGTON Shouting Over Deep Water Blues LP
"Arrington de Dionyso first made his name with the crazed Olympia-based art rock unit, Old Time Relijun. And I guess they still technically exist, but he has lately been more involved with Indonesian musical investigations, and lots of overtly free jazz horn aktion. Shouting Over Deep Water Blues was recorded by Henrik Lofgren in July 2012, in a small boat floating off the coast of Sweden. It features five improvisations on the Bromiophone with occasional liquid accompaniment provided by nature. Asked to describe the Bromiophone, Arrington writes, 'After many years of intense focus on the resonances and multi-phonic potentials of the bass clarinet, I decided to experiment with an extended range PVC pipe instrument called the Bromiophone (after Bromios, the thunder-roaring aspect of Dionysos in Greek mythology). As a modular instrument using a bass clarinet neck and mouthpiece, the various tubes can be lengthened and shortened according to improvisatory whim and wonder. The palms of the hands cover two open air holes which can be modulated both with movement of the hands and variations in lung pressure and mouthpiece embouchure to control the production of pitch, volume, and most importantly variations in tone color.' We've heard lots of players from Chris Corsano to Borbetomagus to Hen Bennink and onward use strange tubes to blow through, but Arrington manages to play a wonderfully full recital here, combining the reed's intonations with vocals recalling some of Arthur Doyle's Voice-o-phone experiments, and small randomized percussion events. Some of the tone inventions initially have a feel one often associates with members of the Netherland's Instant Composers Pool, but Arrington has a stick-to-it-iveness that ultimately make the music seems as American as it is freaked. If this is the Now Sound, I'll take it." --Byron Coley, 2019 Edition of 300.

KANGDING RAY Azores EP 12"
Kangding Ray consistently fascinates the scene with his unique style that is bridging the dance floor and abstract electronic composition, talking equally to the mind and the body. His first record for Figure spans exactly that arc, introducing to the label something as much for headphones as it is for the big clubs. The tracks on Azores EP feel as intimate as the artist's work on other long players but are focused clearly on impacting the physical realm. Teeming with ideas, he first lets his modular synths sway and turn loosely before switching it to a more bassy and propulsive approach on the flip. Balancing cinematic strings against stepping rhythms, the EP's closing track is another prime example of this producer's skill to craft something which holds up as an abstract piece of art as much as it does yield a lot of emotional tension.

BANTOU MENTALE Bantou Mentale CD
A dark, thundering Kinshasa meets Paris soundworld. Ecstatic vocals, broken beats, subterranean bass and full-throttle energy. This four-piece group of sonic groundbreakers have delivered a scintillating debut album. Bantou Mentale was born in Chateau Rouge and born out of Matongé. Drummer and song-writer Cubain Kabeya -- originally from the DRC, now resident in Paris -- has been in or around every big thrill to come out of Kinshasa over the past decade: Staff Benda Bilili, Konono No.1, Jupiter & Okwess, Mbongwana Star. Guitarist Chicco Katembo was part of the Staff Benda Bilili story in the early days, before moving to Paris to live with his French mother. Singer Apocalypse is an ace face on the Parisian Congo scene, an alumnus of the orchestra of Koffi Olomide, emperor of contemporary Congolese soukous. Liam Farrell, aka Doctor L, born Irish, raised Parisian, is a musician, composer, and producer with an impressive score sheet that includes Assassin, FFF, Psycho on Da Bus, Tony Allen, Mbongwana Star, Babani Koné, Nneka, Les Amazones d'Afrique. The Bantou Mentale sound is neither traditional, nor slave to the all-encompassing tropes of Congolese rumba, nor slick and arty and self-consciously stylish. They're bringing something modern, raw, open to the world. Liam and Cubain have been distilling experimental mashes of electro African beats on-and-off for years, under names like Black Cowboys or Negro-P. The sound is a gleeful borderless up-cycling of all the urban styles that Paris, London, New York, Kinshasa have been doling out to the world these past two decades, combined into something new and purposeful. There are songs like "Zanzibar" and "Sango" that lament the clandestino stuck in the desert, penniless, screwed. And songs like "Chateau Rouge" that celebrate the wild uncertainty, the liberation, the fellowship of the migrant. "Boko Haram" bemoans the intellectual subservience and social servitude of many Africans, with music that's underpinned by the pulse of the forest and propelled by roughneck riffs and phasing guitars. "Papa Jo" pays homage to an old departed friend from Kinshasa who threw the best parties in his ramshackle house. The delicious grime of "Suabala" hides a story of love, with levels of passion and guitars frolicking in the red. "Boloko" is slower, more ethereal, with its subversion of the sound of those angelic choirs of "saved" little African kids that were the pride of the missionaries. "Syria" tells you that there's no future in petrol wars, with music that's strangled, painful, urgent, tragic, with plenty of glorious distortion.

JOYNER, SIMON Pocket Moon CD
"'Singer-songwriter' is a frustratingly confining term; to truly understand exactly just how confining, look no further than the recorded works of Simon Joyner, an artist whose work consistently transcends the narrow parameters of genre classifications and record shop bin cards. Though his music has always honored, reckoned with -- wrestled with -- the tradition set forth by his songwriting forebears (Cohen, Van Zandt, Ochs, Dylan, Reed to name a few), Joyner can always be counted on to defy expectations; as a lyricist, melodicist, and arranger, Joyner likes to keep us on our toes. For his new album Pocket Moon, Joyner opted to engage in a risky artistic challenge. Instead of leaning on his fertile pool of Omaha musicians (the amorphous Ghosts band), he asked friend and frequent collaborator Michael Krassner to assemble unknown players on his behalf specifically for this recording. He then traveled from his home base to Krassner's '7-Track Shack' studio in Phoenix to record the album, abandoning the literal and figurative comfort zone of old habits and home field advantage. Simultaneously sparser and more immediate than 2017's obliquely topical Step Into The Earthquake, Pocket Moon is instantly one of Joyner's finest albums since his redoubtable 2012 double album masterpiece, Ghosts, or to some ears the excellent, sonic 180 he managed with his follow-up, Grass, Branch & Bone. Krassner's wrecking crew is sturdy, versatile, and complementary. Utilizing a wide range of instruments and textures, the band contributes additional nuance to each of the ragged, sublime songs here. The result is another song cycle stylistically unified, dynamic and rich." --James Jackson Toth

"Guided By Voices is now an unlikely candidate for the most perfect rock band of all time, while at the same time being a thoughtful reflection on what a rock band is, a fantasy that becomes a fact. Sweating The Plague, the band's 29th album and their third this year, spars playfully with stadium-sized fidelity and uncharacteristically impactful arrangements. Producer Travis Harrison's counterintuitive approach to Guided By Voices' historically lo-fi sound is that he doesn't want it to sound homemade, while the grinding tectonic plate guitars of Doug Gillard and Bobby Bare Jr. anchor the album. Play it loud! ALUNAH Violet Hour CD
On the back of last 2018's critically acclaimed Amber & Gold EP, Alunah return with Violet Hour, the new album and first for Heavy Psych Sounds. Violet Hour sees the energy of Alunah's dark, doom-tinged hard rock being cranked up with the arrival of guitarist Dean Ashton (bassist in Diamond Head) alongside the soaring vocals of Sian Greenaway and rhythmic foundation of Dan Burchmore and Jake Mason. Recorded at the historic Welsh Foel Studio and produced by Chris Fielding (Conan, Electric Wizard, Primordial) the eight tracks on display show the fruits of a productive early 2019 with a searing combination of melodies, riffs, and focused writing. From the opening combination of "Trapped & Bound" and "Dance Of Deceit", the album pulls the listener in to an ominous world brought to life by artist Felipe Froeder - Arcano XV and doesn't let go until the brooding finale "Lake Of Fire". With roots dating back to 2006 in "Sabbath City" UK and an evolution that has grown over four previous albums and numerous European tours/festival dates, the momentum now picks up the pace.

DETROIT SWINDLE The Life Behind Things EP (feat. Isoul8 Remix) 12"
Detroit Swindle is back on Heist Recordings. They come in with full force, delivering a set of Swindle-styled house tracks, accompanied by a jazzy remix by Volcov in his Isoul8 moniker with guest appearances by Kaidi Tatham on keys and Nigel Bennett on vocals. The EP kicks off with "The Life Behind Things"; a life affirming soulful house tune that's cleverly built around a set of switching organ stabs. The energy in this track keeps on building with the filter slowly opening up while live percussion oozes its way through the track (courtesy of Mauskovic Dance Band member, Chris Bruining). After a well working surprise acid break, the track breaks down into a jazzy organ solo by Byron the Aquarius, building up momentum till the full track comes back in for an ecstatic delivery of feel-good dancefloor emotions. The second original of this EP is Detroit Swindle's view on what a party-starting piano house track should sound like with "Music For Clubs". This track is all about rolling drums, lush piano stabs and possibly the funkiest baseline in four-to-the-floor house music. The latter two are made possible by the quick finger work of their live show collaborator and close friend Lorenz Rhode. The full B side goes to Volcov's remix of "The Life Behind Things". He takes his inspiration from the energy of the original and chooses to set a steady groove where the lush key work of Kaidi Tatham shines both on the chords and a muscle-flexing organ solo. The vocal sample from the original is accompanied by some great ad-libs by Nigel Bennett. With these elements working together in perfect harmony, you can practically feel the good vibes these three friends had when recording the remix. It's been on our to-do list for a while to record a full-on house record.

BARBIERI, CATERINA Patterns Of Consciousness 2LP
2019 repress. Patterns Of Consciousness is the powerful second full-length from analog synth composer Caterina Barbieri. Gorgeous high resolution analog textures and algorithmic melodies unfold under Barbieri's careful control, exploring the basic nature of sound and consciousness. These pieces are minimal in arrangement but maximal in presence asserting Barbieri as a unique voice in contemporary electronic music composition. Patterns Of Consciousness was originated by ideally infinite permutation of patterns through a disciplined and exclusive use of machinery (an indexed quad sequencer and a harmonic oscillator). By means of subtraction, addition, and jitter operations, Barbieri derives a myriad of interlocking patterns extracted from an original matrix of just few harmonic archetypes, gradually developing the potential of the reduced constellation of pitches and durations determined in advance. Pushing the limits of her monophonic instrument, Barbieri seeks out counterpoint from a single oscillator through the exclusive use of additive synthesis, fast progressions, extreme melodic jumps, and intricate delay lines. She develops an illusory counterpoint style influenced by her passion for baroque lute music, where fast arpeggios are employed to get effects of sustained chords and overcome the limits of fast decay timbres. But the highly formulaic and germinative style of these pieces is also influenced by Indian classical music's vision of sound as an agent of change and recreation. Patterns are understood as the cells of an organism or the units of a language: a limited set of signs that can be recombined to always generate new possibilities. In POC, repetition and permutation of patterns are explored as tools to reconfigure perceptions and bend emotions, approaching sound as a medium to develop and master our own perceptual art. Emerging machine intelligence, human desire of pattern detection and the understanding of music as a cognitive feedback between humans and technology are primary sources of inspiration for this work. All the compositions share a common fatalistic tension, an impossible running, a restless rush - somewhat nervous somewhat ecstatic - to grasp a meaning out of fragments. Every piece in POC is conceived as a generative entity, a dynamic and living being able to develop its own organic laws, whose inner potential of growth and change is embedded in the initial instructions of the sequencer. Music produced by Caterina Barbieri between September 2015 and January 2016. Mixed at EMS (Elektronmusikstudion) in Stockholm. RIYL: Alessandro Cortini, Eleh.Caterina Barbieri on Patterns Of Consciousness: "A pattern creates a certain state of consciousness. Once it is created, the pattern stands as an object exactly like the sound waves which generate it. We are at the same time inside and outside of the object. While being it, we observe it. Over time we become familiar with the inner structure of the pattern. We decode its gravitational centres, where our psychomotor attention is attracted, where everything seems to be drawn. When a change in the pattern occurs it causes a perturbation of the previously established field of forces. This causes consciousness to fracture, potentially unfolding layers of perceptions we weren't aware of or simply suggesting that we access only a fraction of our psychic potential. The layered nature of consciousness and the relativity of perception are some of the biggest secrets we can experience through sound."

DUM DUM BOYS Let There Be Noise LP
"Often obscured by the ascent of Flying Nun's legendary roster is New Zealand's late 1970s / early 1980s punk scene. Based in Auckland, a cadre of acts influenced by The Ramones and Stooges briefly thrived. The Dum Dum Boys -- the first NZ punk band to record and release a full-length in their native country -- were hooked on the Ann Arbor sounds of Iggy Pop. The Dum Dum Boys' Let There Be Noise (1981) is chock-full of James Williamson and Deniz Tek riffage; it also contains elements of Iggy Pop's nihilism. Take the lyrics to 'Something To Say' -- it's refrain repeatedly asking 'What am I living for?'-- and juxtapose them to the band's namesake track from Pop's The Idiot (1977): 'What happened to Zeke? He's dead on jones, man.' 'Stalking The Streets' taps into the meaninglessness of James Taylor and Dennis Wilson's Two-Lane Blacktop journey through the American Southwest. The Dum Dum Boys understood the proto-punk sounds of 1970s Ann Arbor and Cleveland. More importantly, they also got the vibe. Life stinks -- sometimes in the places (Auckland) you'd least expect it. As the title suggests, Let There Be Noise is anything but a record incessantly focused on introspective doom and gloom. 'Don't Be A Bitch' rivals Radio Birdman's 'I-94' for lyrical thick-headedness -- like sticking a hot 454 in a Ford Falcon gasser, the song's simultaneously awesome and dumb. That's a difficult balance to strike. Let There Be Noise (1981) was self-released and copies quickly became damn near unobtanium, even in New Zealand. (I should know: I lived there.) In The Red has performed a major service by reissuing this obscure and outstanding record. Independent New Zealand releases from the early 1980s didn't get their due; distribution out of the country was essentially non-existent. It's nice to see that finally getting corrected." --Ryan Leach, Terminal Boredom

LAURANCE & WDR BIG BAND, BILL Live At The Philharmonie Cologne 2LP
Double LP version. 180 gram vinyl. A charter member of the three-time Grammy Award winning, internationally acclaimed group Snarky Puppy, voted Jazz Group of the Year in the 2017 DownBeat Readers Poll, keyboardist Bill Laurance has also been operating outside the confines of that wildly popular genre-bending jazz and funk collective. Recorded in front of an enthusiastic audience at the Philharmonie concert hall in Cologne, Germany, and powered by the renowned 18-piece WDR Big Band under the direction of principal conductor Bob Mintzer (renowned tenor saxophonist, longtime member of the Yellowjackets and leader of his own Grammy-winning Bob Mintzer Big Band), this adventurous outing finds Laurance re-imagining previously recorded works on a much grander scale. "I always imagined these compositions to be played by an orchestra, and it's a rare opportunity to have your music realized with a large ensemble of this caliber," said Laurance. In some ways an extension of Snarky Puppy's orchestral collaboration with the Netherlands Metropole Orkest on 2015's Grammy-winning Sylva (Best Contemporary Instrumental Album). Cinematic in nature with surprises around every turn of the page, Live at the Philharmonie Cologne is easily Laurance's most adventurous outing to date. As the U.K.'s Jazz Journal put it: "If jazz is to continue to appeal to future generations then it needs people like Bill Laurance to renew its relevance."

LOOKOUT FARM At Onkel Po's Carnegie Hall/Hamburg '75 2LP
Double LP version. 180 gram vinyl; gatefold sleeve. In 1975, the NDR established its own festival to provide the then so called "New Jazz" with a home base in the Hanseatic City of Hamburg, which was suffering slightly under the omnipresent and highly respected swing- and Dixieland traditionalists, who provided a cozy, but hardly innovative version of jazz. "Onkel Pö" was selected as a second venue of the "New Jazz" festival -- the club which had established itself as a new home of jazz in Hamburg. Also, for the club the festival meant a substantial boost. Part of the 1975 festival program was a band founded by Dave Liebman and Richie Beirach some two years previously under the enigmatically beautiful name Lookout Farm. The first and universally acclaimed record was released on the German label ECM. Liebman, Beirach as well as bassist Frank Tusa and percussionist Jeff Williams were undoubtedly at the center of this vehement awakening of a newly liberated music; ostentatiously, at the Hamburg festival concert the quartet invoked themes and motives by John Coltrane, back then the visionary leader of everything new in the world of jazz.

TEAGUE, RYAN Recursive Iterations CD
Bristol-based composer Ryan Teague presents his seventh studio album, Recursive Iterations, a suite of seven extended compositions that incorporate cinematic arrangements and cutting-edge sound design within an algorithmic framework to striking effect. The resulting pieces combine elements of neo-classical, post-rave, and soundtrack music, to create an utterly compelling contemporary soundscape balanced by a calculated, almost architectural use of space and restraint. The musical structure is derived from a custom-written algorithmic system that sequences harmonic and rhythmic events in ever-shifting patterns. Hyperreal electro-acoustic phrases and digitally synthesized fragments come and go in continual rotation, re-framed and re-contextualized by their proximity to other events in the sequence as the compositions evolve. The effect evokes a minimalist bricolage, hypnotic and kaleidoscopic in nature, and calls to mind artists such as Oneohtrix Point Never, The Haxan Cloak, and Ital Tek. At the same time, a core theme running throughout the record is a masterly use of absence and inertia influenced by the Japanese concepts of ma (? - negative space) and the enso (?? - circle), which serve to complement and counterbalance the diverse sound palette. By integrating these qualities, tension is built and resolved in equal measure, creating a dramatic sonic impression where fragmented rhythms, dynamic textures, subsonic basses, and delicate ambience all coexist. Recursive Iterations is a bold, powerful, and unique work that pushes sonic boundaries whilst revealing more with each listen.

ODYSSEY Setting Forth LP
"Once upon a time, when the music business was more music than business (but only just), there was a band that created a quintessential dose of New York sixties psychedelia: one perfect album, loaded with fuzz guitar riffs of the greatest ferocity, heavy swirling organ, pulsating drums, and intense vocals. That band was Odyssey. It is true that their album, Setting Forth, did not take them from support slots in their native Long Island to the major label heights of other local bands like Vanilla Fudge. That could be because there were only a few copies made, and they came in a plain white jacket. Yet it is that same Odyssey Setting Forth album that is one of the greatest guitar-heavy psychedelic records in the world, and as a result is one of the most sought after and rare (expensive) LPs of the era. The last original vinyl copy to hit the open market was back in 2005, it's that rare. Now Setting Forth is available on vinyl again for the for the first time in a decade, ready for true psych fans to devour. This is truly one of the cornerstones of underground psychedelic music, recorded in 1969 and released as we have said in a minuscule private edition. It is an album that jumps right out of the speakers at you, from it's opening blasts of 'In-a-gadda-da-vida' fuzz guitar riffs, right to the very end. Color insert has a suitably kaleidoscopic band history by Odyssey leader Vinny Kusy, as well as rare photos from his own archive. One of the most important psychedelic rarities ever pressed on wax -- back on wax. One of the absolute best American psychedelic LPs of the 1960's, and one of the rarest! Includes a color insert with rare photos, and kaleidoscopic band history by Odyssey leader Vinny Kusy."

ISAN Lamenting Machine CD
Antony Ryan and Robin Saville return with their ninth studio album as ISAN, Lamenting Machine. Three years in the making, Lamenting Machine is the deepest and most satisfying chapter yet in the ongoing musical conversation between these brilliant musicians. Subtle yet mesmerizing melodies evoking long forgotten memories, calmly throbbing bass figurines pulsing gently along -- all paying tribute to free-floating rhythms and their eternal noises. ISAN has always been an intimate and personal take on electronic music. Produced both in Denmark and the UK in their respective studios, each of the eight tracks symbolize a sea of blossoms carefully crafted and tended to, bringing color and hope to today's fragile and volatile world. And while there is definitely a lot worth lamenting about, ISAN's machine of the same name is an explorational celebration of their own musical past, once more bringing to the surface the project's essence of aural delight. Listening to ISAN requires time, but it is time well invested. While sounding exquisitely lighthearted from the outside, a closer inspection reveals a richly orchestrated and multi-layered musical riddle, mimicking a hedge maze of gargantuan scale and complexity, with each tone and each rhythmic pattern to be dissected, analyzed and understood individually in order to find the way out. ISAN's music has always had this quality, yet reflecting on their own past more consciously, the music on the new album redefines this approach in a more precise and gratifying way than ever before. While wholeheartedly shimmering and drenched in beauty, in order to fully appreciate the whole scale of ISAN, it is key to bravely engage with the underlying vagueness and fuzziness lingering in the tracks. Letting each piece of gear be true to itself, accepting its flaws as part of its unique personality, and turning these frailties into a starting point of inter-circuitry communication, ISAN has been at the forefront of humanizing technology and eliminating the dystopian men machine debate, clearing the table for a better future. This approach actually requires time in the studio as well: circuits need time to warm up, get to know each other, understand the energy flowing through the cables connecting them, figuring out what to do and what they really want. This process is not so much about giving up control, but rather to moderate a constant exchange of ideas.

HEPTONES, THE Night Food LP
"Night Food, released in 1976, is one of the final Heptones albums featuring original lead singer Leroy Sibbles. During the time recorded to attract an international audience, recorded at Harry J.'s studio. Older material is combined with fresh songs from the mid-'70s, which make it a versatile record. The vocal performances are as great as ever, and they're showing how they could reinterpreted classics by their own. ''Book Of Rules'', perhaps one of the most iconic songs in the reggae, is featured on the album in its most beautiful way. The release includes an insert with lyrics. The Heptones were one of the more significant trios of the 1960s and 1970s, and played a major role in the gradual transition between ska and rocksteady into reggae with their three-part harmonies. 180 gram vinyl, includes insert."

HIEROGLYPHIC BEING Synth Expression/Rhythmic Cubism LP
Synth Expressionism/Rhythmic Cubism LP from Chicago's Jamal Moss, aka Hieroglyphic Being, is a collection of idioms that have no past and no future, his jarring use of polyrhythmic polyphony imbues a sense of timelessness. The prolific catalog of Moss's covers many musical dialects from his hometown and beyond. Never standing in one artistic sphere for too long, this adventure for On The Corner Records sees Hieroglyphic Being exploring a multitude of expressions of the American avant-garde. "Rhythmic Cubism: In this 'Dissertation Of Disorientation' [Neal Andrew Emil Gustafson] temporal considerations are put aside as polyrhythmic propulsion is the current flowing through the work. As prelude the fastidious 'Rhythmic Cubism', Moss enacts a flurry of white noise and musical coda as it phases in-and-out of synchronicity. The disjointed dance of an alternative Black Music, 'The Spiritual or Electromagnetic Worlds' takes the meter down a fraction to exonerate a granular groove of visceral refracted complexity. Sonorus static sits alongside spastic shards of synthesis to reveal a melancholic medley before its conclusion. 'Apocrypha' collages distinct rhythmic source materials in an entrancing abstraction of 'Hypersonic Hemiola'. An assertion of Art Blakey proportions. Perpetually pushed forward through the building of distorted percussion, Moss precludes into syncopated synapsis before and end of reductive symmetry. Evolving into a stuttered off-kilter groove, "The Redemption Project" flows as a dissipating organ medley dissolves into a deluge of layered sonic textures, creating an indiscernible metric center before fading to a distant vanishing point. Departing with a common-time 'Timbuk2' takes off like a classic Chicago acid track, then makes a left turn towards the center as it drives the rhythmic motion into a dystopian dreamland, as the sax line surges forcing the track to break free from its charted course. The Fragmented fantasy of the Synth Expressionism/Rhythmic Cubism LP is a conclusive work that has no end, a conundrum of conceptual calculated improvisation. Drifting through time, this fragmented abstraction of Afro-cubism leaves room for posterity, as each listen summons a new perspective on the suite. Something ever so common in the work of Jamal Moss. Charting new sonic directions, the very nature of its precedent makes it a truly Hieroglyphic affair." --Neal Andrew Emil Gustafson

IMHOF, ANNE Faust CD
Deriving from the acclaimed performance and exhibition -- staged by Anne Imhof at the 57th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia and awarded the Golden Lion for Best National Participation -- the album Faust is part documentation and part elaboration, the sonic capture and extrapolation of the gestures, intensities, and durations of the live event. Serving as the dramatic backbone of a several-hour long performance seen by thousands over the course of the Biennial, the soundtrack was a product of the collective and its individuals, animating and organizing the performers while immersing the audience in the potent images of power and paradise. The music for Faust was written in a band-like process by Imhof and her close collaborators Billy Bultheel, Eliza Douglas, and Franziska Aigner during the months leading up to its premiere at the opening of the German Pavilion in Venice. The album is constructed out of live recordings and original arrangements, teasing out the most potent strands and weaving them into a new composition of brutal feeling and baroque intricacy. Faust is anchored around three pieces -- "Medusa's Song", "O.W.E.N.", and "Queen Song" -- written and sung by performers Eliza Douglas and Franziska Aigner. Between these urgent vocal interventions march and twist the winding fugues and electronic abstractions of Billy Bultheel, who has dismantled and reassembled the sonic landscapes of the pavilion, crafting new arrangements that couple the forcefulness of the physical encounter with the artifice of the studio. Throughout the album and culminating in its closing act -- the brutal chorus of Douglas' "Faust's Last Song", a pulsing canon of looped and layered voice pierced by black metal screams -- the record admits the listener into the inner space of Imhof's dramatic vision of power, complicity, and vulnerability. Faust shifts hypnotically between times and spaces, between cries and calls, between polyphonic antiquity and polyrhythmic complexity. The release of Faust illustrates the centrality of music to Imhof's artistic practice. Her musical collaborations with Bultheel began in 2013, and this generative constellation expanded to include the contributions of Douglas and Aigner, together scoring Imhof's Angst (2016) and recently her performance trilogy Sex (2019). Includes expansive booklet of photography by Nadine Fraczkowski. Mixed by Nanni Johansson at Hansa Studios and Ville Haimala; mastered by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering. Co-published with German Pavilion 2017 and Galerie Buchholz, Berlin/Cologne/New York.

PELADA Movimiento Para Cambio LP
Movimiento Para Cambio, is the full-length and debut for Pan from Montreal based duo Pelada. Comprising of vocalist Chris Vargas and producer Tobias Rochman, they have gained international attention through the city's underground warehouse rave scene. An urgent, headstrong body of work, the LP uses the music as a mechanism for delivering ideas central to the group's moral and political ethos. Vargas explores themes of power, identity, surveillance, and environmental justice atop Rochman's raw mix of rave synths, acid basslines, breakbeats, and dembow rhythms. While at times unpredictable, the album is unified in its fast and loose approach. "A Mí Me Juzgan Por Ser Mujer" (I Am Judged Because I'm a Woman) is an anti-machista anthem, stylistically nodding to NY house. Though Vargas doesn't identify as a woman themselves, they understand their experience as a woman in an imbalanced patriarchal society that excludes women, femmes and non-binary people. "Habla Tu Verdad" (Speak Your Truth) emphasizes the need to overcome the stigma around discussing sexual harassment, offering courage and strength to those who may need it. "Asegura" (Secure) deals with the unprecedented power of Big Data, which monetizes a surveillance-based economy through its users' data and behaviors. These themes are set to fierce unrelenting bpms, nods to gabber, and samples of a reality show where young men compete in a prison fitness contest. "Caderona" (Big Hips), features a hardline perreo-tinged beat that carries Vargas's vocals with refreshing ferocity. Inspired by a cumbia song, "Caderona" offers a counterpoint to the male gaze, acting as an opportunity to demand space. "Aquí" describes the reality of a global corporate domination, where capitalist insatiability meets government inaction as we sit on the precipice of a mass extinction of our own making. Pelada hope to inspire critical self- reflexivity through engagement, building power, demanding space and action. Or as it is written in their liner notes: "ABRE TUS OJOS, LA BESTIA SE ALIMENTA DE LA EXPLOTACIÓN" which translates to "OPEN YOUR EYES, THE BEAST FEEDS ON EXPLOITATION". Mastered by Jeremy Cox. Features artwork by Johannes Schnatmann and Bill Kouligas.

LICHTENBERGER, GRISCHA Re: phgrp (reworking consequences by philipp gropper's philm) CD
Grischa Lichtenberger's music stands for broken rhythms, for high-density manipulations that emphasize the digital and fractal nature of its working process. A mindset that grew closer to contemporary jazz in recent years. Since free jazz, this genre also sought to overcome musical standards and looked for possibilities of an individual artistic expression. Within this context, the collaboration between Lichtenberger and jazz saxophonist Philipp Gropper as well as the resulting album are documents of this development. It also offers both musicians the opportunity to expand their familiar environment by breaking with expectations. The foundation for Re: phgrp were pieces from the album Consequences by Philipp Gropper's band PHILM which Lichtenberger reinterpreted without giving up their original character. He rather looked for figures, subjects, and reference points in the compositions to reflect and condense them. As Consequences was recorded with all the instruments in one room at the same time (like a classical jazz recording from the 1950s), the extraction of individual instruments was a challenge which Lichtenberger took up with shifts, distortions, and rearrangements of the original temporality of the material. Except for a few synthesizer sounds and an additional piano recording, he remained largely true to the source material, even though the tracks develop their own unique voice throughout the album. Re: phgrp (reworking consequences by philipp gropper's philm) will be released in cooperation with Whyplayjazz in a limited edition of 500 CDs. The cover was screen printed and shows a compositional notation by Grischa Lichtenberger. The album marks the beginning of an encounter between Lichtenberger and Gropper that promises to continue in joint improvisational concert situations and further recordings in the future.

SAUL Murmurations 12"
Saul is a new duo composed of Barney Whittaker (Footshooter) and Jack Stephenson-Oliver (Vels Trio/Poppy Ajudha/Charlotte dos Santos) . The band, having debuted at Brainchild Festival in 2018, have spent the last couple of years working on material for this stunning debut EP. Featuring friends and frequent collaborators Brother Portrait (Steam Down) and Poppy Ajudha, the six track EP simmers with a potent UK energy; paying homage to the sounds of garage, jungle and broken beat all in the context of the new wave of London jazz -- of which all members of this project are key players. Opening track, "No Fuss No Fight" provides a blissed-out, shuffling backdrop to showcase Brother Portrait's toast to the dance, in which he effortlessly switches from spoken word to fast paced delivery. At once doffing its cap to Mala's iconic anti-war dub whilst taking inspiration from The Streets' observational masterpiece "Weak Become Heroes" - this is a song with "instant classic" written all over it. "Ping Pong" is a Kaidi Tatham-esque workout, leading nicely to standout track "Earth Rain" featuring breakthrough London singer Poppy Ajudha. The synergy between Jack on keys and Poppy on vocals is clear; the two have been playing together for years and combine perfectly on this sun-drenched contemporary take on the so-called broken-beat style. All in all, the EP is equally at home in the club as it is in the living room, owing to its balance of the epic and musicality. This is undoubtedly a product of London town and couldn't fit more perfectly with the expansive sound of Rhythm Section International.

CHANTLER, JOHN Tomorrow Is Too Late LP
LP version. Australian born, Sweden-based John Chantler returns to Room40 with his fifth solo edition. Tomorrow Is Too Late was commissioned by INA GRM for their Présences Électronique festival in 2018 and sees Chantler expand the horizons of his acoustic palette. Moving from subtle microtonal movements to passages of intense harmonic saturation, Tomorrow Is Too Late is his most dynamic work to date, a powerhouse of reductive intensity that bears witness to Chantler's uncompromising sonic articulations. John Chantler's recorded works for electronics are a dichotomy. Each of his editions, whilst entirely refined and composed, maintains a distinct sense of experimentation. Chantler's willingness to forgo the familiar in favor of the unknown or the unexpected has become a recurrent methodology which has resulted in a body of work that is simultaneously united and sprawling; Tomorrow Is Too Late typifies this dichotomy. Across each of the long-form pieces, he brings together unexpectedly vibrant sonic materials that converge and occupy attention with a dynamic intensity that exceeds all of his previous offerings. Rather than considering dynamics purely in terms of amplitude, Chantler uses frequency as means for creating elegant moments where stability is removed and we, as listeners, are left to find our own way amidst the towering, complex patterns he devises. The record also maintains a surrealist sensibility; audio hallucinations manifest, buried within the acoustic substrata. Voices, submerged within electronics hint at some imagined place. They bubble away at the very threshold of audibility. Similarly, stacked oscillating tones create hazy acoustic visions that suggest concrète landscapes, a nod to the storied history of the INA GRM studio. Tomorrow Is Too Late resolves a great many of John Chantler's interrogations into sound. It also opens a new chapter for his work, an aesthetic deepening that is sure to sustain him for many years to come. Chantler works with synthesizers and electronics to create unpredictable, highly dynamic music where passages of spare, alien beauty bridge distorted washes of masses harmonics. Originally from Australia, he spent a decade in London before moving to Sweden where he directs a small festival His work has been commissioned by Borealis Festival for Experimental Music in Bergen, Norway; Organ for the Senses, San Diego, USA; ElbPhilharmonie, Hamburg, Germany and Tectonics, Glasgow, UK. Chantler has also been artist-in-residence at the ZKM center for media arts in Karlsruhe, Germany and NOTAM in Oslo, Norway.

ENTLANG The Four Sisters LP
New Zealand's intimist pop quartet Entlang weren't here for very long -- a few years during the 1990s, and then they were done. In that time, the group, an offshoot of now-féted noise-pop group The Garbage & The Flowers, produced one self-released lathe-cut 10", one self-released lathe-cut 7", and one song on Windswept Trees & Houses, a CD-R compilation on San Francisco label Jewelled Antler. It's a small, elegant body of released material, most of which now appears on The Four Sisters, a compilation featuring four songs from their back catalog, and just maybe, the Entlang album that never was. Entlang's music trades in opposites: on first listen, one senses fragility, emptiness, a kind of slow consideration. The deeper you go, though, the more you realize this is music made of great strength and resolve, of fierce intelligence. "Airport" picks out a hypnotic guitar riff and a simple rhythm before spiraling into an interweaving, all-cogs-interlocking moment of black-and-white psychedelia. "Lisa" see-saws on Helen Johnstone's gorgeous vocals and viola, the two threading together beautifully, riding into the sun on the simplest of Velvets melodies. Ghostly backing vocals of "Walking Into Bars" hymn a song of tender melancholy, Yuri Frusin's plain-singing voice perfect for its hushed intimacy. "Nameless One" descends into plaintive chaos, from a core of quiescent beauty. In many ways, Entlang are a return to a more traditional approach to song writing, after Helen Johnstone and Kristen Wineera had formed and spent time in the improvisational group, Dress. Their legend has slowly accrued, helped by the reissue of The Garbage & The Flowers' Eyes Rind As If Beggars on Bo'Weavil/Fire in 2013 (BONFIRE 001CD/LP). Now, Rose Hobart presents The Four Sisters, a selection of Entlang recordings -- some rare New Zealand beauty magicked up from history's byways.

THUJA Hills LP
Rose Hobart present a reissue of Thuja's 2002 album, Hills. The album emerged out of a particularly productive phase for the loose assemblage of musicians known as the Jewelled Antler Collective. Glenn Donaldson and Loren Chasse, who had recently formed Thuja alongside Steven R. Smith and Rob Reger, were dialing down the volume, moving away from the instrumental rock interludes of previous groups like Mirza, and exploring more rugged terrain -- laminal improvisation, wistful wide-eyed folk songs, field recordings, and home-recorded electro-acoustics. By 2002, Jewelled Antler had developed a certain notoriety for unstintingly releasing excellent, small-run CD-R releases. Thuja's albums had been picked up by Craig Stewart's visionary Emperor Jones imprint, but Hills was released on a small-scale American CD-R label, Last Visible Dog, run by Chris Moon. Of the four albums (and two more mini-CDs) Thuja released that year, Hills is a startling document, a collection of eviscerated dream tones and cavernous psychoacoustics. The unforced, luxuriant development of Thuja's music -- a misty fold of keyboard drones, tinkling piano, clusters of percussion, shuttling and scrabbling strings and other things -- often asks for metaphor from the natural world. But this is also distinctly city-based music, as Donaldson described it: "insular warehouse music from a still affordable city, before the internet dominated everything. No intention of getting noticed or 'streamed', just making sounds for the sake of it. A rejection of rock things: clubs, structure, volume." The music on Hills and other, loosely contemporaneous releases often played on broken instruments and non-instruments, with small, sensual details captured by contact mics, was "all improvised," Donaldson recalls, "but no 'jamming' or soloing [was] allowed, just a slow evolution towards a mood." In that respect, Thuja can lay claim to a heritage of all-in-one, group-mind improvisation that arcs back to AMM and Musica Elettronica Viva, but also connects with other, less immediately recognizable precursors -- there are shades here of groups like Biota, or composer Sofia Gubaidulina's improvisatory outfit Astreja. There's a relaxed yet questing folksiness too.

COMPRO ORO Suburban Exotica CD
Compro Oro; a psychedelic underground road trip to Africa, the Middle East and the Americas via Belgium. On the band's Suburban Exotica, the spirit of Cal Tjader, Mulatu Astatke, or Marc Ribot is never far away. One of the leading bands in the ever-expanding new wave of Belgian jazz, Compro Oro's wayward and psychedelic approach to a broad range of sounds has gained them a devoted fan base since the band's formation in 2014. Produced by Ghent-based multi-instrumentalist Dijf Sanders, Suburban Exotica digs deep into several ethnic music traditions, leaving the listener enthralled in dark grooves and rabid psychedelica. From the danceable beats and colorful sounds of "Miami New Wave", the exotic rhythms and textures of "10 Dollar Jeans Jacket", and the curious vibraphone infusions and wild guitar riffs of "Rastapopoulos", to the heady, bass-laden mover and shaker "Lalibela", and traditional Latin and Cuban rhythms of "Dark Crystal", Compro Oro offer wild, profound, and uncanny flavors that explore the best of Afro-Cuban music and jazz-tinged psychedelia. Suburban Exotica features drummer, keyboardist, and percussionist Joachim Cooder, son of guitar legend Ry Cooder who played on both the landmark Buena Vista Social Club albums and the Manuel Galban spin-off, Mambo Sinuendo. He adds percussion and his effects-laden electric mbira to three tracks on the album: "Miami New Wave", "Rastapopoulos", and "Dark Crystal". "I had a great time playing on this record. Compro Oro blends together so many interesting rhythms and styles that I never knew what was coming next. I like to work that way." On Suburban Exotica, Compro Oro's Wim Segers adds, "Thanks to Bart (Vervaeck) and saxophonist Nathan Daems (Black Flower), I've discovered Arab and Turkish music. I've learned to embrace my own neighborhood. When you live in this part of Ghent, Eastern rhythms are the beat of the street." Vervaeck chips in, "We aren't Cuban; we aren't Morocccan --we know that. We just sail from one coast to another. Finding our own place." CD version comes in a digipack.

"What is True False? True False is Negativland's full length return to all original music that could be mistaken for actual songs, albeit ones sung by dozens of sampled vocalists who have never met. The first of two interconnected double albums, 2019's True False tackles concerns that will be familiar to any surviving fans of the band: our nervous systems, our realities, and the evolving forms of media that inevitably insert themselves between us. Shootings, bees, the right's rules for radicals, dogs pretending to be children, climate control, the oil we eat, and the right of every American to believe whatever they want to believe are all explored -- it's never the content, always the edit. This album is one's own inescapable subjectivity made catchy as witness to the entrenched political beliefs of the left and right cleanly switching sides in under one generation, and it's the first Negativland album to come with a lyric sheet. Juxtaposing Occupy mic-checks with US militia rallies, FOX news hosts and ecoterrorists, and the listener's sanity with the home-viewing habits of Negativland's lead vocalist, the Weatherman, when the word 'true' is put next to the word 'false,' a broader reality come into focus. Who's even in Negativland these days? Didn't half of them die a few years ago? VELVET UNDERGROUND, THE Night Games: A Documentary Film DVD
"As iconic a group as has ever existed, The Velvet Underground were so far ahead of their time, musically, visually and culturally, it's as if they were dropped, ready formed, into New York's avant-garde art scene, from a parallel universe. And in addition to their unique imagery, so perfectly designed by maverick artist and impresario Andy Warhol, their experiments with form and sound that worked in tandem with to-die-for melodies and provocative lyrics, spurred two of the most oft-repeated quotes in the history of rock; the ubiquitous, '50 people bought the first Velvets' record and every one of them went on to form a band', and music-critic Lester Bangs' outrageously perceptive, 'all modern music begins with the Velvet Underground'. This documentary film explores and dissects the roots, formation, recordings, concerts and numerous other activities of The Velvet Underground, across their short career, and features a wealth of rare material. including live and studio musical performances, seldom seen promo films, footage and photographs from Andy Warhol's private collection, obscure interviews with and footage of, Lou Reed, Andy Warhol, Sterling Morrison and John Cale, plus interviews given exclusively for this film with Moe Tucker, Doug Yule and Billy Name, plus contributions from such luminaries as ex- Village Voice music editor Robert Christgau, author of From The Velvets To The Voidoids, Clinton Heylin, Total Rock DJ, author and journalist, Malcolm Dome, Luna main-man Dean Wareham and many others. DVD extras include extended interviews, special feature 'Velvet Reflections', plus full contributor biographies, making this feature a must-have item for all fans of the Velvet Underground and curious music-lovers alike."

BELLA BOO Once Upon A Passion 2x12"
Once Upon A Passion is the debut album from Bella Boo, arriving on Studio Barnhus shortly after a sprinkling of releases through the label that have quickly established the currently LA-based producer (and longtime Stockholm DJ hero) as one of dance music's most distinctive new voices. Throughout its nine tracks, you are treated to a fascinating, wider-than-ever view of Bella's uniquely intimate and personal world of sound. The album features vocal contributors Gnu??i and Def Sound as well as Nils Janson on trumpet and Axel Boman on acid bassline. Cover photo by Bozi Borbély Espinosa, artwork by Alexandra Karpilovski.Bella Boo on the album: "I made the album this spring during an intense creative period back home in Stockholm. I was obsessed with my studio, I wanted to spend all my time awake there. I found out I was getting evicted from it, this sudden chock turned into a decision to do this album. It made sense, like an 'end of an era' thing. I was pretty isolated back then, spending almost all my time outside of the studio with my daughter Bozi. She snapped the cover photo while I was picking out records for a gig. I never wanted to leave the studio during these months, but I realize now how the breaks with Bozi worked for the process -- they gave me space to reflect on the music I was making. That dynamic was exactly what I needed to finish this album."

PAIK, NAM JUNE Works 1958-1979 CD
2019 repress. "This is a wide panorama of Nam June Paik work as musician -- 'Hommage à John Cage' (1958-1959), 'Étude for Pianoforte' (1959-1960) and 'Simple' (1961) are good exemple of neodada music and de-structuration in the late 50's, this is basically irreverent audio-collages. 'Prepared Piano for Merce Cunningham' (1977) captures an improvised performance by Paik on a de-tuned piano. While 'Prepared for Merce Cunningham' was later mixed and edited for use by Cunningham, this raw, straight-to-tape version is favored by Paik. 'Duett: Paik/Takis' (1979) this is the only piece already released (by 20 years ago on a limited vinyl edition). Paik improvises on piano and voice, while Takis performs on his metal sculptures. Nam June Paik, was born in Seoul, Korea in 1932. After a move to Japan, where he studied the work of composer Arnold Schönberg, Paik came to Germany in 1956 to continue his studies in the history of music. His interests soon turned away from the university setting, to less traditional forms of music leading him to the Westdeutsche Rundfunk's Studio for Electronic Music, where Karlheinz Stockhausen was working. To date, there have been only a handful of limited edition LP and cassette releases of Paik's music, primarily documenting collaborative performances with colleagues and friends such as Joseph Beuys and Charlotte Moorman. This is the first CD release of Paik's music and the first ever release of the early tape collage pieces that were to inform the video and performance works that he has continued to produce over the last forty years."

KNIZAK, MILAN Broken Music LP
2019 repress. Milan Knízák's 1979 masterpiece reissued on vinyl for the first time; presented in a gatefold with the original design. Milan Knízák (born April 19, 1940) is a Czech performance artist, sculptor, musician, installation artist, dissident, graphic artist, art theorist, and pedagogue of art. Before everyone else -- Christian Marclay, Philip Jeck, eRikm, Martin Tétreault, Yoshihide Otomo -- there was Milan Knízák. In 1964, Knízák, a member of Fluxus from behind the Iron Curtain, sat down on a sidewalk near the Charles Bridge in Prague, laid down a paper carpet right into the street, and starts tearing pages out of books and burning them. Around the same time, he began to create music from defective, worn, damaged, or broken LPs. These Broken Music compositions, his classic collages of noises created during performances and happenings, are widely regarded as important sound art documents. Knízák recalls, "In 1963-64 I used to play records both too slowly and too fast and thus changed the quality of the music, thereby creating new compositions. In 1965 I started to destroy records: scratch them, punch holes in them, break them. By playing them over and over again (which destroyed the needle and often the record player too) an entirely new music was created -- unexpected, nerve-racking, aggressive and even humorous. Compositions lasting one second or almost infinitely long (as when the needle got stuck in a deep groove and played the same phrase over and over). I developed this system further. I began sticking tape on top of records, painting over them, burning them, cutting them up and gluing different parts of records back together, etc. to achieve the widest possible variety of sounds."

VA Pakistan: Folk and Pop Instrumentals 1966-1976 CD
Spending the greater part of the last decade assembling this masterpiece while tracking down most of the musicians in the process, Stuart Ellis of Radiodiffusion International has compiled a mind-blowing set of Pakistani instrumentals spanning the period between 1966 and 1976. It's all here: rock and roll beat, surf, folk traditional mixed with pop, film tunes, electric guitars, sitar and organ solos, brilliant percussion and arrangements crafted by the grooviest bands of the period: The Panthers, The Mods, The Bugs, The Blue Birds, The Abstracts, The Aay Jays, The Fore Thoughts, Nisar Bazmi, and Sohail Rana. Situated between Afghanistan, India and Iran, the collision of cultural influences in Pakistan gave birth to music that was, and still is, unlike anything heard anywhere else on the planet. By the late 1960s, previous restrictions on musical expression began to soften and bands that were playing American and British pop covers became popular in Karachi's burgeoning night club scene and at private dance parties. Long hair came into fashion among young men and hashish became the popular drug of choice on college campuses across Pakistan. Soon, hippies from both North America and Europe began flocking to Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar. Very few of the bands that formed during this time actually got to record. Like their neighbors in India, the Pakistani record industry was more focused on releasing "filmi" music, which had just started to incorporate the electric guitar and electric sitar. Pakistan's musical revolution ended in June 1977 after a coup d'état and the establishment of a pure Islamic state governed by Sharia law. This marked the end of the "Swinging '70s" in Pakistan as night clubs and alcohol were banned throughout the country. Television and cinema, as well as popular music, were now subjected to government censorship. After the clamp-down, many Pakistani musicians left the country and moved to America, Canada and England. The audio quality here is top notch, sourced straight from the original EMI Pakistan masters. This CD comes in a digipak with superb photos of the musicians and extended liner notes by compiler Stuart Ellis.

OTHMAN, ADNAN Bershukor: A Retrospective of Hits by a Malaysian Pop Yeh Yeh Legend CD
The legendary Adnan Othman has long been a driving force in the Malaysian rock scene. As early as the 1960s his groundbreaking songs in the style known as Pop Yeh Yeh (rock and roll sung in Malay) attracted fans from across Southeast Asia. Recently, he has gained many new fans around the globe due to a renewed interest in rock music from this region. Adnan first rose to fame during the groovy Pop Yeh Yeh era (1964-1970) in Malaysia and Singapore and he continued to evolve as a musician and composer throughout his exciting career. He made his first recordings in Singapore in the early 1960s, when he was invited to record with a highly popular backing band, The Rhythm Boys. He produced innovative material well into the 1970s, but always stayed true to his Rock-and-Roll roots, even when many other artists were turning towards more predictable disco influences. Every track on this album, which draws from all eight of his solo EPs, reveals a different side of his personality. His forceful, gritty, and emotional lyrics and vocals are backed by such memorable Pop Yeh Yeh bands as The Rhythm Boys, The Wanderers, The Flamingoes, and The Falcons. This impressive collection includes rare photos from the artist's own collection and a detailed biography, co-written by Adnan himself. This is a rare and personal insight into the life of one of Singapore and Malaysia's most beloved Pop Yeh Yeh legends -- revealing the man behind the spotlight -- one of the most humble, generous, down-to-earth people you could ever meet. It is clear that Adnan Othman cares deeply about preserving the legacy of his fellow Pop Yeh Yeh musicians: he devoted much time and energy helping to develop the previous Malaysian rock-focused release, Pop Yeh Yeh: Psychedelic Rock from Singapore and Malaysia 1964-1970 (2013). Again, for this album, he patiently answered our many questions about his life as a musician and artist, and we are most grateful to him for giving this release so much of his unique perspective. In fact, the title of this collection, Bershukor, named for one of the hits included in this album, means "gratitude" in Bahasa Melayu. The 26 unforgettable tracks on this CD are soulful, electrifying, and beautiful. To the many fans of '60s Asian Rock and Roll around the world who have been waiting for an album dedicated solely to the music of Adnan Othman, here it is! Digipak CD with full-size color 32-page booklet of text and photographs.

PYUR Oratorio For The Underworld CD
Munich's PYUR (Sophie Schnell) makes her Subtext debut with Oratorio For The Underworld, a nimble odyssey through vivid, otherworldly dreams. Growing up immersed in her family's work as shamans, Schnell draws on the techniques and stories of her upbringing, through which ephemeral forms, stories, and colors seep into her sound -- a synthesis of hyperreal sound design, dramaturgy, and classical composition. PYUR's fascination with the space between life and death is expressed through the weaving together of the organic and sublime in a dramatic exercise in expansive sonic worldbuilding. The album is a form of storytelling in which Schnell reimagines and takes on the role of psychopomp, ushering the listener into a borderless realm. She relays rich legends while warm, airy timbres (courtesy of cellist Teresa Alvarez and violinist Juan Zalba Fuentes) serve as guides throughout. Working largely in isolation over a period of two years, Oratorio For The Underworld is a document of "inward archaeology", and marks an intimate yet grandiose journey through the psyche, exploring the ecstatic emotional boundaries between life and death, and body and spirit.Since the release of her debut record, Epoch Sinus, on Hotflush in 2016, PYUR has been active performing internationally at festivals such as Berlin's Atonal and Tasmania's Dark Mofo. She is currently at work on a collaboration with the French choreographer Benjamin Bertrand developing a piece called "La Fin Des Fôrets", which will be performed in summer 2020.

BEN, JORGE Solta o Pavao LP
A reissue of Jorge Ben's Solta o Pavao, originally released in 1975. Jorge Ben is one of Brazilian music's iconic and best-loved figures. Born Jorge Duilio Lima Menezes in Rio in 1942, he took the stage name, Jorge Ben, in deference to his mother's Ethiopian roots, and later used Jorge Ben Jorge for further distinction. Playing tambourine and singing in a church choir from an early age, Ben began playing in Carnival blocos and was performing in nightclubs as a teen. Signed to Philips in 1963, his "Mas Que Nada" became an instant international sensation that has never waned, despite being sung entirely in Portuguese. Beginning in samba, Ben's openminded approach saw him embrace aspects of bossa nova, the "Jovem Guarda" rock movement of the mid-1960s and the experimental Tropicalia form, the broad palette and diverse influences yielding a number of adventurous and abstruse albums during the 1970s, of which Solta o Pavao is one of the most rated by connoisseurs, though somewhat overlooked in general; its title translates roughly to "Unleash the Peacock" and apparently concerns the outward expression of inner beauty. Against a backdrop of lushly produced samba rock with shades of MPB, highlights include opener "Zagueiro", in which Ben salutes football center-backs in typically playful and poetic language; closing number "Jesualda" is a heady ballad of a chance encounter leading to a girl's social climbing and "Para Ouvir No Radio (Luciana)" a love song with striking flute and string arrangements; Dadi Flavi's bubbling bass and occasional string synths help keep the sound non-standard.

VA Jamiila: Songs from a Somali City LP
Reissue, originally released in 1987. The eastern African nation of Somalia is rich in cultural influences. Wrapped part way around Ethiopia, it forms the sea coast of the Horn of Africa. Somalia was one of the first African countries converted to Islam, in the Eighth and Ninth centuries. During the 18th and 19th century, the Somali ports were controlled by Arabs and by the Ottoman Empire. During the European colonial period, the north was a British, and the south an Italian, colony. Independent Somalia still shows varying effects of these influences (Arabic, English and Italian are all used for teaching). Musically speaking, Somalia forms part of an eastern African Islamic continuum that includes the coast of Kenya and Tanzania as well as Sudan, and is more loosely linked with North and Muslim West Africa. (Kismayu, in the south of Somalia, is in fact the most northerly frontier of the Swahili music called "taarab" or "tarabu"). The main traditional instrument of Somalia is the "ud", imported from Egypt or Lebanon and known locally as the "kaban". Another common instrument is the "taruumbo", or flute. The one heard on several of these tracks was a homemade, end-blown version cut from a piece of plastic tubing. As is true for the whole of Africa, the standard six-string acoustic guitar has been taken over by Somali musicians and played in a wide range of styles. Small keyboard instruments have also long been a feature of East African coastal music. In the old days, portable harmoniums were popular. In Somalia, the market has been captured by Japanese-made organs with built-in rhythm, like the one heard on four tracks here. The music on this album was all recorded in one town, Baraawe (usually called Brava on the maps). Baraawe, which is on the Somali coast about 120 miles south of the capital, Mogadishu, has a population of around 10,000. Like all African towns of any size it is something of a melting pot. The original inhabitants, like the Swahili to their south, are of mixed Arab and Bantu African heritage, and speak a Bantu language called Chimina. Somalis from various other areas, speaking standard Somali and several dialects of it, also live in Baraawe. The musicians heard here play regularly together in various combinations. Like almost all African musicians, they are part-timers. Some are shoemakers. Two are soldiers. All the pieces they perform on this recording are love songs. Features Kuusow "Kurtunwaarey", Amin Xaaji Cusmaan, Cabdulaahi Iman "Zamir", Xasan Xaaji Maxamed, and Nuur Maxamed "Curuba".

SPACE GHOST Aquarium Nightclub LP
Tropical boogie meets mellow house on Space Ghost's new album Aquarium Nightclub: An homage to the natural world set against the richly-diverse backdrop of Oakland. After Space Ghost's first album Endless Light (2018) took to international airwaves and echoed out of cities from London to Los Angeles, his forthcoming release Aquarium Nightclub brings back his signature lo-fi aesthetics with a fresh hit of inspiration from the natural world. Melding irresistible vintage synths with a meditative groove, Aquarium Nightclub is a journey of sorts. Taking listeners on a tropical tour through '80s house drums, lush synth landscapes, and deep bass melodies, the thirteen-track LP is as adventurous as it is restrained. Growing up in a small town a few hours from California's East Bay area, Space Ghost (Sudi Wachspress) moved to Oakland ten years ago to study at the California College of the Arts. In a city known for its vibrant cultural fabric and its experimental music scene, Space Ghost represents a new generation of young artists. His DJ collective Late Feelings, launched in 2013, has allowed him to find his own groove amongst monthly all-vinyl dance parties, where he plucks influences from various corners of the world. More complex than last year's release, Aquarium Nightclub shows off Space Ghost's artistic hunger and unique sonic signature. Kicking off with "Sea Snake Island", a track that is best described as late '80s house melancholia, is a beautiful dance of shimmering keys, drum machines, and sounds of the jungle. The single "Sim City" featuring Morgan is a classic Chicago house beast; dark but uplifting with heavy bass undertones, fuzzy drum pulse, and plenty of mysterious synth melodies. Other tracks like "Ocean Odyssey", "Night Dive", and "Aquarium Nightclub" plunge into an ambient world of slow 80s funk, though always rooted in the Bay Area sound. A product of record-collecting and dance party hosting, Aquarium Nightclub is a glittering postcard from Atlantis. Profound yet undeniably groovy, its mesmerizing tropical undertones promise a safe journey back to the endless days of summer. The album artwork is designed by Space Ghost himself.

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART The Broadcast Archives: Classic Live Recordings from the 1960s & 1970s 4CD BOX
"As sonic mavericks go, the man originally christened Don Van Vliet remains, quite possibly, 'the godfather'. And as the later re-christened (allegedly by his old mucker, Frank Zappa) Captain Beefheart, he retained his originality, creative spark and unique vision throughout his musical career, and both released and performed some of the most enjoyable albeit challenging sounds to have emerged from the generally limiting genre, loosely called rock n roll. This triple CD collection brings together a number of fine recordings of Beefheart's most interesting live performances from the 1960s and 1970s. Kicking off with a show played at San Francisco's Avalon Ballroom in 1966, the first disc also features a number of radio session recordings from the 67-68 period, plus an interview undertaken in 1973 with the good Captain, by one of his highest profile fans, DJ John Peel. Disc Two continues in similar vein with a show, also recorded for live FM broadcast, given in 1974 in Kansas City, while Discs Three & Four complete this boxed set with a longer gig, this time from 1975's Bongo Fury Tour, jointly performed by Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa."

HYPERDAWN Bleach LP
Hyperdawn are Salford-based experimentalists Michael Cutting and Vitalija Glovackyte. Off the back of their prolific individual projects, ranging from multimedia performances to studio releases, orchestral works to solo live sets, the duo has steadily developed a distinctive voice as Hyperdawn, forging modified keyboards, homemade instruments, and reel-to-reel tape recorders. Their debut album, Bleach, takes their physical, process-based aesthetic with imperfections of warped tape and faltering hardware and pushes it towards the boundaries of pop music. Hints of verse-chorus structures are now apparent with the use of Vitalija's voice as an essential introduction, giving the duo's rough grained instrumentals a new level of poignancy. While the reel to reel machines provide the album's characteristic sound, this isn't music for the analog purist. Digital processes have their place here, countering the warmth of valve amplifiers with glitchy pitch-bending effects, matching un-quantized tape loops with high frame-rate playback. Bleach displays a delicate balance between new and old, skeletal and substantial, rigor and recklessness. The result is a broken pop music borne out of hours of improvisations and experimentation that feels at once completely foreign and entirely familiar. Ambiguous textures and structures are contextualized by Vitalija's confident vocal delivery. Beats are left off-kilter, intonation is approximate, while clicks and pops protrude over decaying instrumentals, suggesting music that is already disintegrating in time.

CLANDESTINE QUARTET, THE One for the Fossa, Two for the Wolverine LP
ThirtyThree ThirtyThree present the debut LP from the Clandestine Quartet, bringing together Alan and Richard Bishop with Michael Flower and Chris Corsano. Invited to perform in London as part of the St John Sessions series, Alan Bishop rounded up this quartet of underground stalwarts with a deep history of collaborative ventures -- the Bishop brothers making up two-thirds of the legendary Sun City Girls, Richard Bishop and Corsano comprising two parts of psychedelic juggernaut Rangda, and the Flower-Corsano Duo having wowed audiences for over a decade with their face-melting brand of eastern-tinged free shred. The quartet spent four days in the studio developing material for the London show and recording the five pieces heard here. They settled, for the most part, on something approaching a classic rock quartet line-up: Richard Bishop on electric guitar, Michael Flower on his signature amplified "Japanese banjo" (an Indian keyed zither), Alan Bishop on bass, and Chris Corsano manning the drums. Rather than a straight-up improvised blowing session, the LP strikes a balance between free-flowing spontaneous interaction and structured surprise, alternating between zoned-out group meditations and stop-on-a-dime unison dynamics. On the epic side-long opener "Don't Hang From My Ceiling", a lyrical weave of guitar, bass, and Japanese banjo lines approaches the unhurried melodic invention of Indian classical music until Corsano's tumbling, free-form drums incite the quartet into an ecstatic crescendo, over which Richard Bishop's guitar unfurls a euphoric solo that calls to mind the mystical grandeur of prime Popol Vuh. The B side finds the quartet branching out both in terms of instrumentation and compositional strategies, crafting a suite of pieces that, like classic Sun City Girls, move unexpectedly from tightly locked bass and drum grooves to explosions of free jazz alto saxophone (courtesy of Alan Bishop) and from shimmering guitar jams to massed choirs of horns. "(So Long) Harry Dean", one of the record's highlights, finds Richard Bishop on piano, leading the quartet through a languorous series of chords punctuated by Corsano's gracefully ungainly percussive accents, before a sudden blast of reed horn announces a passage of rapid-fire dissonance that seamlessly transitions back into the pianistic meandering of the track's first-half. Effortlessly balanced between improvisation and composition, melody and noise, rhythm and space, the Clandestine Quartet is a fitting next step for this group of psychedelic troubadours.

SAKAMOTO, RYUICHI Thousand Knives Of Ryuichi Sakamoto LP
LP version. Wewantsounds present a reissue of Ryuichi Sakamoto's first solo album Thousand Knives Of, originally released in 1978 on the sought-after Better Days label. Save for a small-scale release in 1982, this is the first time the album is being released on vinyl outside of Japan. 1978 was a key year for Japanese music. Haruomi Hosono, one of the country's most innovative musicians had just formed Yellow Magic Orchestra pursuing the sonic experimentation he had started with his solo album Paraiso. The album, recorded between December '77 and January '78, featured both Ryuichi Sakamoto and Yukihiro Takahashi. Hosono quickly invited both musicians to form YMO but before the group could release their first album, Sakamoto entered the Nippon Columbia studios in April 1978 with a plan. Sakamoto had become an in-demand session musician after studying composition at the Tokyo University of Art and had played on many key albums of the time, such as Taeko Ohnuki's Sunshower (1977) and Tatsuro Yamashita Spacy (1977). This led to an invitation by Hosono to feature on Paraiso. A penchant for avant-garde and improvisation had gotten Sakamoto interested in electronic music early on, and with Thousand Knives he decided to get Hideki Matsutake on board as he had mastered the art of synth programming following a stint with Electronic Music pioneer Isao Tomita. Thousand Knives took several months to record as Sakamoto would be busy during the day with his session work and would only record at night. Named after Belgian-born poet Henri Michaux's description of a mescaline experience, the album is a reflection on how synthesizer technology might come to change the face of music. The first side conceived as a long suite opens with the title track and a recitation of the Mao Zedong poem "Jinggang Mountain" filtered through a vocoder, before morphing into a mid-tempo synthpop instrumental. It is followed by "Island Of Woods", a ten-minute track buzzing with insect-like synth sounds. Side one ends with "Grasshoppers", a beautiful acoustic piano melody underlined by a subtle synthesizer soundscape. Side two opens with "Das Neue Japanische Elektronische Volkslied", acknowledging the influence of the German sound spearheaded by Kraftwerk. The track features a mid-tempo metronomic beat skillfully intertwined with a Japanese folk sounding melody. The album ends with two catchy up-tempo synthpop tunes in the form of "Plastic Bamboo" and "The End Of Asia", which both became staples of YMO's and Sakamoto's live shows. YMO's sound included various influences from its three members but there is no denying Thousand Knives paved the way for the group's Computer Music sound. Remastered from the original tapes by renowned producer and engineer Seigen Ono.
