SUN RA The Antique Blacks LP
Art Yard present a reissue of Sun Ra's The Antique Blacks, originally released in 1974. The vitality you hear on The Antique Blacks is a testament to the unique energy of the community around The Foxhole Cafe in Philadelphia, as Ra honed his unique brand of Afro-futurism through the late '60s and '70s. Cosmic theater, spiritual chants, and experimental electronics make this record an essential document that was ahead of its time. Recorded as a radio broadcast in Philadelphia, according to Dale Williams, The Antique Blacks has a well-defined but oddball structure. Sun Ra was a master architect, very concerned to use the unfolding of an album, a broadcast, or a live performance to create a satisfying structure. "Song No. 1" is a lively, tonal introduction, featuring John Gilmore on tenor saxophone, Sun Ra on roksichord, Dale Williams, then aged 15, on guitar, and Akh Tal Ebah on trumpet. Sun Ra's poetry is featured on "There Is Change In The Air", a track which has on occasion been used for the album title: in its original incarnation as a Saturn LP, there was no dedicated sleeve artwork, and this record appeared under many names. Ra's poetry is allusive, elusive, and paradoxical, and this was its first major appearance on a record. During instrumental passages, Williams's guitar is heard, along with the saxophones of Marshall Allen and Danny Davis. The Antique Blacks is a similar setting for a Sun Ra poem, which encompasses "spiritual men", and Lucifer as a dark angel. The Arkestra is heard in conducted improvisational ensembles, in between the sections of the poem. "This Song Is Dedicated To Nature's God" has Arkestral vocals, with John Gilmore's voice in the foreground. Sun Ra's poetic declamations provide the structure for "The Ridiculous I" and "The Cosmos Me", which also has a fine unaccompanied tenor solo by John Gilmore, keyboard improvisations by Sun Ra, and closes with bass clarinet from Eloe Omoe. Sun Ra's keyboards are heard with minimal Arkestra support on "Would I For All That Were" -- a fine synthesizer improvisation, with electric piano left hand accompaniment. Tension is resolved by "Space Is The Place", which rounds the album out in an upbeat mood, with Akh Tal Ebah, James Jackson, and Sun Ra prominent among the vocalists. The closing section includes the chant Sun Ra And His Band From Outer Space, often used at the close of live performances.

SYDNEY Paraíso/Dahlia 7"
Bristol's Sydney returns to Black Acre with two jazz infused cuts featuring saxophonist Guy Hobley and emerging guitarist Charlie J-W. One of Gilles Peterson's Future Bubblers, Sydney is a live artist and traditional instrument enthusiast who debuted on Black Acre with a Swaziland inspired debut mini-album entitled Ode to eSwatini earlier in 2019, showcasing an eclectic mix of broken beat and Jazz. Now the Bristolian returns with two collaborations featuring two vibrant jazz and blues musicians -- Guy Hobley on the saxophone and guitarist Charlie J-W. "With the record being South American influenced the titles and artwork are based on a garden in Mexico named Las Pozas. Paraíso meaning paradise and Dahlia being the native flower to Mexico found in the Las Pozas garden" Sydney conceptualized during Sydney's first session as a Future Bubbler using one distorted PA speaker in a room full of the new generation year three bubblers with Gilles Peterson present, "Paraíso" featuring Guy Hobley flutters into place with shuffling percussion, reverberating piano fills and smooth sax melodies from Guy Hobley whilst underlying world instrumentation operates throughout, including bongos, claves and shakers. Created in one afternoon alongside fellow band member and friend Charlie J-W, "Dahlia" gives a warming aural experience with a Nina Leão vocal sample, cantering south American drums, a mix of traditional guitar strums, pedal hits, and accordion strikes, all glued together with stylish synth stabs.

AFUMA Songs From The Shore LP
LP version. In Japanese folklore, Afuma indicates a time of day marked by spiritual or mysterious encounter. In Latin, one who inhales. Together as Afuma, Stefan Tcherepnin and Taketo Shimada breathe sepulchral energies into the brooding, cosmic fringes of guitar-based song vernacular. Tcherepnin's baritone and Shimada's lap steel guitar intertwine, smearing across world's-end horizons that propel Tcherepnin's ragged, foreboding vocal delivery and its lyrical portents of departure, of life's vessel unmoored onto a fathomless periphery. Shimada, a Tokyo-born musician and artist who has lived with Herbert Huncke and worked with Henry Flynt, also contributes Indian double-reed instrument shehnai to the band. And Stefan Tcherepnin, a contemporary artist and composer in fourth generation (continuing the family heritage of his great-grandfather Nicholas, grandfather Alexander, and father Ivan Tcherepnin), embellishes their dirge-scapes with electronics from the Sonica, a lute shaped version of the Serge synthesizer developed by his uncle. A family friend and student of Maryanne Amacher, Tcherepnin's piano playing alongside Marianne Schroeder's additionally graced Blank Forms Edition's publication of Amacher's Petra (BF 005CD/LP). Tcherepnin and Shimada are joined by drummer David Silver for Songs From The Shore, their debut LP, featuring artwork in the form of "A Rip In The Void", a newly commissioned painting by Bobby Beausoleil.

GONDELN AND MATS GUSTAFSSON WITH WOLFGANG VOIGT AND MARTIN SIEWERT, WENDY The Shithole Country & Boogie Band CD
In 2018, Mats Gustafsson provided raw saxophonic material for the elusive Wendy Gondeln, who sometimes applied a scalpel, sometimes a pneumatic drill, to rework, remix, reimagine all the Swede's squeaks, pops, blats, and tones. In some places, Gondeln adds violent violin to thicken the roux, making Ornette's fiddling seem like Yehudi Menuhin. Uncommon bedfellows: disjunct techno and improvised music. But the Shitholes make it work brilliantly, even inviting minimal techno pioneer and co-founder of Cologne's seminal Kompakt label Wolfgang Voigt to edit and remix two of the twisted tracks. The CD's other guest star, engineer Martin Siewert, contributes guitar and lap top guitar to a couple of tracks. Not your usual any kind of music, The Shithole Country & Boogie Band bends genres and upends style. Spasmodic dance music or highly conceptual experimental sound art -- it's a thin line Gondeln and Gustafsson tread on these eight diverse tracks, but an irresistibly fun one, too.Personnel: Wendy Gondeln - violin, electronic treatments, and more; Mats Gustafsson - piano mate, saxophones, and live electronics; Wolfgang Voigt - editing and mix (track 3 and 8); Martin Siewert - guitar and lap top guitar (track 1 and 7).

GRUBBS, MATS GUSTAFSSON AND ROB MAZUREK, DAVID The Underflow CD
An übertrio drawn from distinct parts of the creative music spectrum, The Underflow was recorded during a sizzling two-night stand in May 2019. In a series of duets and trios, guitarist David Grubbs, saxophonist Mats Gustafsson, and trumpeter Rob Mazurek met headlong for the first time, converging not only their acoustic and electric instruments, but at times submerging themselves in a tangle of electronics, then emerging into shamanic bell-shaking chant or chest-rattling howl. Ranging from extreme noise to delicate texture (even a rare solo by Gustafsson on his first instrument, the flute), the CD's five tracks mark the beginning of a new group, named -- the same as the record -- after the venue at which they were recorded, the venerable Underflow Record Shop and Art Gallery in Athens, Greece. Harnessing the energy and intelligence of Grubbs's recent solo guitar records, the spirit and grit of Mazurek's hallmark work with the Chicago Underground Duo and recent Desert Encrypts project, and the monster-truck yowl of full- force Gustafsson, The Underflow is a surprise even for its participants, a present they gave themselves. Open with care, volatile contents inside.Recorded by Manolis Aggelakis at Underflow Records and Art Gallery, Athens, Greece, on May 31, 2019. Mixed and mastered by Alex Inglizian, ESS Chicago summer 2019. Personnel: David Grubbs - guitar; Mats Gustafsson - flute, fluteophone, baritone saxophone, live electronics; Rob Mazurek - piccolo trumpet, wooden flute, electronics, percussion, voice.

LINDSAY/JOE MCPHEE/KEN VANDERMARK/PHIL SUDDERBERG, ARTO Largest Afternoon CD
One day in the studio, something ridiculously great happened. It was deep Chicago winter, cold as shit. Four musicians assembled for a round-robin set of improvisations -- duets, trios, a few quartets. Approached casually, the late morning bloomed into Largest Afternoon, 15 crackling encounters between guitarist Arto Lindsay, saxophonists Joe McPhee, and Ken Vandermark, and drummer Phil Sudderberg. No expectations -- open minds and creative intent. Lindsay, a brilliant singer and songwriter and one of the key architects of no wave via his band DNA, has proven himself once again to be one of the world's top texturalists, and he is an equally sensitive and challenging group improvisor. Vandermark and McPhee brought their long friendship and musical partnership to the studio, and both engaged with Lindsay in different ways, bringing blue flame and melody. The session's final wildcard, Sudderberg, a versatile drummer who collaborates with Vandermark on the band Marker, brought a lovely sense of buoyancy and ear for contrast in colors, as well as a raucous rock pulse. With parts this stellar, imagine when Largest Afternoon > than the sum. Nobody knew this would happen.Recorded February 9, 2019, at Experimental Sound Studio, Chicago. Engineered by Alex Inglizian. Mixed and mastered by Alex Inglizian with Ken Vandermark, John Corbett, and Jim Dempsey at ESS. Photographs by John Corbett. Cover design by David Khan-Giordano. Produced by John Corbett and Jim Dempsey. Personnel: Arto Lindsay - guitar; Joe McPhee - alto and tenor saxophone, pocket trumpet; Ken Vandermark - tenor and baritone saxophone, clarinet; Phil Sudderberg, drums.

MCPHEE AND FRED LONBERG-HOLM, JOE No Time Left for Sadness CD
Despite having worked together in innumerable settings, including the longstanding Survival Unit III, with drummer Michael Zerang, cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm and multi-instrumentalist Joe McPhee have never released a CD of duets. In an extra intimate studio setting in upstate New York, where both players reside, No Time Left for Sadness demonstrates their incredible musical understanding. Recalling some of McPhee's landmark records with Marseilles musicians in terms of telepathy and trust, it's an outing whose intensity is measured not in decibels, but in emotional integrity. Across three tracks of increasing length, culminating in the 31-minute-long adventure "Next Time," McPhee (hear featured on tenor saxophone exclusively) and Lonberg-Holm redefine chamber music, casting string and reed in a joyous and longing place, a rec room set aflame, a library engulfed in tidewater, a throbbing mezzanine. The cover and the CD face feature original stained-glass works by Lonberg-Holm, and the interior spread is entirely given over to an action shot of the duo by Stevphen Shukaitis.Recorded at Lone Pine Studios, January 11, 2019. Engineered by Eli Winograd. Mixed by Fred Lonberg-Holm. Mastered by Alex Inglizian at Experimental Sound Studio, Chicago. Photo of JM and FLH by Stevphen Shukaitis. BREUKER & HAN BENNINK, WILLEM New Acoustic Swing Duo 2CD
Corbett Vs. Dempsey present a reissue of Willem Breuker and Han Bennink's New Acoustic Swing Duo, originally released in 1967. Late in 1967, saxophonist Willem Breuker and drummer Han Bennink recorded the first LP for the new artist-run free improvised music label, ICP Records. New Acoustic Swing Duo was an instant classic, and remains one of the most enduring documents of Dutch improvised music ever recorded. With Breuker's omnidirectional reed work, which ranges from plaintive to excoriating, occasional sneering tone adds a kind of ironic twist to the expressive outpouring. He could be as explosive as Peter Brötzmann, but Breuker has a razor-sharp wit and sense of humor. Since this recording, Bennink has gone on to be seated among the royalty of jazz and improvised music drummers. At the time, he was a fresh-faced 25-year-old, hauling around increasingly immense kits with heaps of percussion flotsam and jetsam, playing tabla and vibrapan, and sparking it all with tsunami energy. Keep in mind, Coltrane and Ali had just recorded Interstellar Space (which would not be issued until 1974), and the economical drum/sax lineup was by no means yet a standard in improvised music. Shortly after recording this, Breuker and Bennink would join Brötzmann to record Machine Gun (1968), another European free music keystone. Somehow, despite its historical importance and aesthetic magnificence, New Acoustic Swing Duo has never been available as a stand-alone CD. Remastered from original tapes, this reissue includes the original cover with the "ICP 001" hand-stamp, as well as several versions of the handmade covers designed by Bennink, drawn from Mats Gustafsson's wonderful collection. Finally, as a special bonus, the two-disc package includes a legendary concert by Breuker and Bennink, recorded in Essen, Germany, in 1968, released here for the first time.

KIWI ANIMAL, THE Mercy LP
"Digital Regress's foray into the fabled NZ underground hops over to the North Island for two exquisite pieces of acoustic DIY and shadowy, cracked pastoralia. After a few years spleen venting at the front of Wellington art brutes Shoes This High, Brent Hayward struck out on his own, self-releasing a few EPs as Smelly Feet before forming The Kiwi Animal with Julie Cooper in 1982. The duo released their first album, Music Media, on Massage Records (their own imprint) in 1984. With the addition of Patrick Waller on cello and sundry other instruments, 1985's Mercy finds an augmented Kiwi Animal trying on what at first glance is a more refined, melancholic sound. But the group's experimental bent, largely restrained on Music Media, soon shows its hand. Pinprick ur-folk guitar themes, blinking on and off, buffeted by radio interference and toy piano; woozy bedsit slow-burns; the arresting croak of Hayward's penpal, William S. Burroughs; even a foray into dosed synth-pop: Mercy presents a unique yield of fraying, autumnal DIY songcraft. The music of The Kiwi Animal, moody and intelligent and often abruptly gentle, works subcutaneously, propelled by guitars that churn and weave -- no jangle here -- and a his 'n' hers vocal delivery for the ages. Digital Regress is happy to make these essentially perfect records available again."

YASSIN, RAED CW Tapes LP
"In this 24-minute composition, released here in its original name for the first time, Raed Yassin encapsulates and condenses the aural and sonic landscapes experienced by those who bore witness to the war. In the 1980s, while the Lebanese Civil War, which ravaged the country between 1975 and 1990, was raging, television but particularly transistor radios were the only means through which people heard the news during interminable periods of power cuts or waiting in basement shelters. The audio material was collected by Yassin on his regular trips to the dispersed and neglected archives of militias and political parties, radio, and TV stations, and record shops across Lebanon. Built from over 300 hours of material, Yassin has woven together a composition using political speeches; radio and television commercials; news flashes and jingles; local '80s pop music; dubbed Japanese anime songs; propaganda, resistance, and revolutionary party songs; snippets from Ziad Rahbani plays, and many more. The recordings in CW Tapes are the sonic equivalents of Proust's madeleines to any individual who was old enough to remember the war and its immediate aftermath. Commercials, songs, and speeches collide and intertwine as if Yassin had plugged a radio tuner into his mind, sounding out a deeply personal sonic terrain that echoes the hidden sonic memories of his contemporaries. Beside the diversity of its sounds, what is most striking in this record is the minute attention to the musicality of the different recordings Yassin uses, whether they are propaganda pieces, vocal patterns or news jingles. What you hear in the beginning of the CW Tapes, for example, is Raed Yassin's fascination for the different political and musical figures that populated the Lebanese media landscape across the 1980s. In this bewildering introduction, he highlights the absurdity of the war by lacing together a political speech given by Bachir Gemayel with a frivolous and upbeat pop song by Lebanese pop singer Sammy Clark whose tunes are heard at different moments in the piece. The composition unfurls an array of overlapping tonalities and textures as well as a glossolalia made of processed voices that inhabited the archaic technologies of the time . . . In his continuous efforts to mine and work through the sonic archives of Lebanon's recent past, the CW Tapes is possibly Yassin's most personal output to date." --Rayya Badran, Beirut, January 2019 Mastered and Cut by Rashad Becker

REGIS Delivered Into The Hands Of Indifference 2LP
Karl O'Connor's banging Regis 1998 blueprint is back in circulation for the techno ultras. The track list has been reshuffled from all previous versions. The A-side now runs through "Hands Of A Stranger" and the cold pipes of "Disease Through Affection", and is backed with the chewy grind of "Body Unknown" and the tonkin' hustle of "Barriers", while the C-side revolves "Concentrate" along with three hefty locked grooves and the D-side includes "Escape From Yourself" and the panic-inducing trample of "Indifference". It hardly needs to be reiterated but this set includes some of the meanest examples of late '90s UK techno, and more specifically, the Birmingham sound that Regis forged so definitively with this album, alongside efforts by his peers, Surgeon, Female, and Mick Harris. If you weren't party to the original pressing, this one stands out thanks to the remastering, which really highlights the pebbledash grain and clangorous industrial atmospheres of the original recordings, which surely set this record and sound apart from the crowd. Entirely remastered at Dubplates & Mastering and cut with three bonus locked grooves not found on the 1998, 2003, or 2012 editions. Includes new artwork. Edition of 500.

QUADRA 163 Spin Coaster (incl. Osunlade Rework) 12"
Through the combined brilliant minds of Fabrice Lig, Kiko Navarro, Karim Sahraoui, and Jean Vanesse, the new musical force known as Quadra 163 has arrived. Working together in Jean Vanesse's Belgium studio, their debut EP, Spin Coaster, was born. Through intense live collaboration over three full days, the results are these incredible original tracks and a remix from the American house legend, Osunlade (Yoruba Records). Belgium's Elypsia Records have an absolutely essential release here for those looking for proper club weapons --each track dreamt up by a crew of producers with decades of critical acclaim and club credibility. Osunlade kicks off the release on A1 with his rework of "Spin Coaster". The remix is a late-night machine jam saturated with sharp synth textures and a shuffling rhythm which will lock the dancefloor tightly in place. A perfect blend between house and techno, it's a shining example of Osunlade's keen ability to capture imagination with function, tension with release. "Ghetto Beat" steps up as the A2, with a drum heavy cut full of off-kilter hits and tones which twist and turn in frequency and timbre. It's the type of track that will get the crowds cheering and jackin' and dancing without a break. A proper tool to slam into the set whenever energy levels need to lift higher and things need to get slightly twisted. Title track "Spin Coaster" sets up the B-side with a master session of primetime techno making magic. A playfully thick bassline resonates in and out of the analog rhythms while a synth tone builds tension over the track's entire duration. A few breaks for the clubbers to catch their breath are placed in the perfect spots -- but only for a brief moment before things kick back in. Rounding out the release is "Ghetto Train", an absolutely mental banger designed to melt the minds of those fortunate enough to be on the dancefloor when it's dropped. Relentless rhythms, huge hand claps and a sharp staccato shuffle drive the tune whilst synth stabs grow filthier with each passing phrase. Clearly the results of an insane studio session from the crew.

AYLER TRIO, ALBERT Spiritual Unity LP
2019 repress. LP version. 180 gram virgin vinyl. Pressed in the United States with original artwork restored. Spiritual Unity, recorded on July 10, 1964, is the album that made Albert Ayler and ESP-Disk' famous (or, in some people's eyes/ears, infamous). Mr. Ayler had already recorded in Europe and, in February '64, in New York, but this was the first album on which neither he nor his collaborators held back. It was also ESP's first jazz recording. Spiritual Unity presented a new improvisation paradigm: looser structure, less regard for standard pitch, and no obligation to present a regular beat. Ayler's sound was unprecedented, much rawer than any other jazz of the time. Sometimes it was expressed in squalls of untempered sound, sometimes in outbursts of poignant spontaneous melody. Meanwhile, under and around the leader's unfettered self-expressions, bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Sunny Murray reinvented the roles of their instruments.

NASCIMENTO, MILTON Maria Maria 2LP
Far Out Recordings presents the first ever vinyl release of Milton Nascimento's Maria Maria, originally released in 2003 as a double-CD package. Recorded in 1974 and unreleased until almost thirty years later, the album was written as the soundtrack to a ballet which dealt with the legacy of slavery in Brazil. Milton Nascimento possesses one of the most immediately recognizable voices in Brazilian music: high and sweet and as breathtakingly sublime as that of any soul singer. Along with journalist and song writer Fernando Brant, lyricist Marcio Borges, and his younger brother Lo Borges, Nascimento wrote and produced what would become Milton's milestone album, Clube da Esquina (1972) which shaped the local scene and reflects the essence of "the Nascimento Sound". Milton's religious upbringing as an Afro-Brazilian Catholic saw him exposed to church choral music from an early age. This collection also displays his early fascination with evocative, non-verbal, scat-style singing, spare, harmonic guitar work and local folk music, jazz, and rock. In 1976, Milton and Fernando Brant teamed up with a new contemporary dance company called Grupo Corpo, whose Argentinian choreographer Oscar Araiz, would become a collaborator with the two musicians. Together, they conceived a show based on the composite life story of the daughter of a black slave called Maria. Nascimento wrote music to Brant's lyrics and Maria Maria was premiered in the main theatre of the Belo Horizonte Palacio das Artes that year. The music on Maria Maria was performed by an impressive group of young Brazilian musicians, including Naná Vasconcelos (percussion and effects), Toninho Horta (guitars), and Paulo Moura (sax). Several vocalists, including Naná Caymmi, Fafá de Belém, Beto Guedes, and Milton himself, had hits in years to come with reworkings of these songs. On the title track, Maria's story is narrated and translated to music through the use of African Percussion, drums, and metal signifying the field slave tools of the day. "Trabalhos (Works)" runs to work rhythms and whip cracks. "Lília" documents the beating of the slave woman. After "A Chamada" and the triumphant "Era Rei e Sou Escravo", things begin to turn and Milton employs tropical jungle cries to symbolize freedom. "Santos Catholicos x Candomble" represents the battle between African and European religions through the music of both sides. Milton's heavenly falsetto pours into "Francisco" and "Pai Grande" and the outstanding "Eu Sou Uma Preta Velha Aqui Sentada no Sol" conjures images of an old woman sitting deep in the forest, her memories painted in drums, piano, and voices. 180 gram vinyl.

After the smoke cleared and they hit the studio the Virginia brothers recorded the confidently mature sophomore effort, Hell Hath No Fury. Best known for their unconventional radio smash 'Grindin',' Clipse are no strangers to taking risks with the boundary-pushing Neptunes, who return as trusted co-pilots for Hell Hath No Fury. As always the duo is right at home over The Neptunes crafted beats which perfectly embrace Pusha's inventive drug-game metaphors and Malice's soul-baring confessionals. Get On Down now proudly issues this Neptunes produced favorite on LP for the first timel."

WHISTLING ARROW Whistling Arrow LP
Whistling Arrow is the debut collaboration between critically acclaimed composer and performer Laura Cannell, This Heat/Camberwell Now founder and seasoned composer/improviser Charles Hayward, multi-disciplinary musician Andre Bosman, and prepared guitar minimalists Ex-Easter Island Head. Brought together by a shared bill on Cannell's Arts Council-funded Modern Ritual tour, the six musicians convened for a single session in Liverpool's Parr Street Studios in 2017. Recording live in the room with few preconceptions and an appreciation of each other's work, the sextet improvised on violins, recorders, drums, piano, electronics, prepared guitars, percussion, and voice. The music of Whistling Arrow represents a deeply empathic meeting of unique musical voices: evoking a musical territory of the ancient and the modern, earthen, and concrete. Laura Cannell's over bow violins wring melodic fragments and modes into groaning chordal shapes, gut-strung, and rapturous; scraping the ground and circling treetops, birdcall double-recorders chirruping in concert. The mallet-struck guitars of Ex-Easter Island Head surge and drift against clouds of overtone-rich amplified strings, excited with motors, Allen keys, and bows, emerging like sun rays through the foliage. Andre Bosman's marshland electronics permeate with humid unease -- glinting metal half-buried, clandestine cabling in wild country. Charles Hayward's expressive command of rhythm and intricate percussive color moves the music forward in swung leaps and nimble left turns, rolling resonances pushing and pulling the formal anchor of Jonathan Hering's piano into tumultuous terrain and gleaming chord shapes. With sleeve notes by writer and comedian Stewart Lee name-checking Faust, Arvo Pärt, the Velvet Underground, and Hildegard Von Bingen as sonic touchstones, the music of Whistling Arrow draws upon the decades-worth of compositional/improvisational practice of the sextet.

URINALS Pin The Needles: Live at George's, Santa Barbara, November 1979 LP
Pin The Needles is the first official live Urinals LP, released a mere 40 years after being recorded in 1979. The band was invited to play in Santa Barbara, a bucolic college beach community a couple hours north of Los Angeles. As you'll hear, the few people in the audience were treated to a set of Urinals classics and a few songs that would populate their debut LP released in 1983 -- just after the band broke up (and had changed their name to 100 Flowers to break out of the cookie cutter hardcore scene they felt trapped in). 22 tracks that transport you back to the late '70s; highlights include a slow workout of "Sensible Virgin", a hyper-manic "Surfin' With The Shah", and an early reveal of the now-classic "California's Falling Into The Ocean". This record is the Urinal's first ever release outside of the USA. Housed in an information-packed gatefold sleeve.

LORDS OF ALTAMONT, THE The Wild Sounds Of Lords Of Altamont (Red Vinyl) LP
2019 repress, red vinyl. A hammered four-stroke beat like a twin cylinder engine running on idle, a roaring guitar riff revving up the rpms of the iron-built motorcycle-inspired band, then the fresh and insisting breeze of a Farfisa organ whispering "let's ride", and a heavy bass greasing up the reliable crank and rods of that authentic rock'n'roll machine, and there it goes ladies and gents, the mighty Lords Of Altamont combo! Riding hard on backyard-built, loud pipes, and rigid frame indestructible raw choppers, the band left their garage enlivened by the year of 1969, right at the crossroads of the Summer of Love and the birth of punk rock. Fueled up by the MC5, the Stooges, and the Chambers Brothers, to name a few, the pack follows Jake "The Preacher" Cavaliere (vocals, organ) on his uncompromising rock'n'roll journey ; Dani Sindaco (guitar), Rob Zimmermann (bass), and Steven Van Der Werff (drums) along with their front man are now spreading out The Wild Sounds Of Lords Of Altamont, their latest record, around the planet! Through fads and fashions, either on wax or on stage, the Lords can take you back to this era of freedom and rebellion with their hi-octane tunes. The gang has been already rocking the world for 17 years with spectacular performances, firmly run-in by five solid stainless records and they're now fine-tuned with this new release of ten powerful late-sixties tracks which manage to sound fiendishly contemporary. Our era needs the Heavy Psych Sounds label and the Lords real bad: nine new original stunning songs plus an arrogant and totally mind-blowing Howlin' Wolf cover ("Evil Is Going On"). Let's welcome the LA combo back and hit the road to rock'n'roll with the "Savage 4". Carefully produced at Kitten Robot Studios in LA by punk rock legend Paul Roessler (Screamers); analog-mastered by Dave Schultz at D2 Mastering Lab.

DEMUIR An Artist Thinketh EP (feat. Lady Blacktronika Remix) 12"
Canada's number one jackin' house ambassador Demuir drops an EP loaded with that true house energy and it comes topped off with a swirling and twirling trip of a remix by Lady Blacktronika. This EP is the result of that short online interaction and a mutual love for high energy house music. This record showcases Demuir's knack for rolling grooves and also shows a deeper, more electronic side of his that might surprise you. The track is "Werq. Feel. Gruv. Vogue." A rough sounding, bumping house track that would have worked just as well in any club in the '90s as it will in today's world of clubbing. The "Vogue" sample has that "tongue in cheek"-vibe and the groove is just irresistible. Top that off with some lovely Rhodes loops, a little disco chop here-and-there and you've got yourself a very original party starter. Heist Recordings always tries to put out diverse EPs, and with "The 3nity Returneth", Demuir delivers a Detroit-tech inspired steam train of a track. The track represents the confidence an artist needs to make it in the music scene. He lays down the groove with a rough bass, rolling hats, and a lovely string sample alongside glimmering electronics for a touch of spirituality. The B-side has two versions of "Philippine Sunrise". The original is a rolling house track with airy synth hits, a Moog-ish rising lead and a freakishly good bass line. The remix comes courtesy of LA native, Berlin-based Lady Blacktronika, who turns the trip factor up a notch or two. She chooses to go for a heads-down direction with a series of dreamy loops to set the mood, all alongside an endless bassline and a steady house groove.

SHASTA CULTS Shasta Cults LP
Shasta Cults is the musical project of Canadian electronics technician Richard Smith. For almost two decades, Smith was the official Buchla & Associates go-to repair person for studios, collectors, and musicians around the world, having worked with artists such as Aphex Twin, Suzanne Ciani, Mort Subotnick, and institutions such as The Library of Congress and Mills College, Smith has had the unique experience of restoring and interacting with nearly every model of Buchla instrument constructed over the past 50 years. "Recording demonstrations of the rare equipment that found its way on to my work bench," is how Smith describes the origins of Shasta Cults. Although sounds have been trickling out for decades, it wasn't until 2017 that Smith recorded his first album using one of these rare instruments: the Buchla 700. Configurations, released in September 2019 by Important Records (IMPREC 432CD) and the catalyst for this latest release, features eight tracks of heavily-modulated, wave-shaped explorations drenched in effects. Recorded over the span of three months in the fall of 2018, this album was programmed using the only fully-functional Buchla Touché. Developed in the early 1980s with hardware by Don Buchla and software programmed by musician David Rosenboom, the Touché features waveforms generated internally by twenty-four digital oscillators and uses frequency modulation along with sophisticated digital and analog signal processing to produce complex timbres. This LP is a continuation of themes first heard on Configurations, with more consideration given to the generation and recording of the pieces. The album's six tracks -- a collection of sonic experiments and hypnotic drones -- span almost forty minutes, showcasing not only the incredible fidelity of the Touché but also Smith's evolution as an audio engineer. Put on some headphones, find a comfortable chair, and let this LP transport you to the mystifying southern cascades of Siskiyou County. Manufactured at RTI and cut by John Golden.

They tell each other stories of planets with no humans to enslave them, no factories to go to -- planets where fresh blue water runs through pink, sun kissed mountaintops. Perhaps it's fortunate then that these Robots can feel no time, have no sense of past and future... And by the time their ship touches down on Ebaum's Dreamland, who knows how many years have passed on Earth? Ebaum's Dreamland is the first Rossum Universal Tracks release. MINDBENDERS, THE Live On Air '66-'68 LP
The Mindbenders, live on air, recordings dating from March 22nd, 1966 to August 13th, 1968. From their huge success with Wayne Fontana and "The Game Of Love" in January 1965, Manchester group The Mindbenders were a guaranteed success story. However, in 1965, Fontana took a solo route and left the band midway through a live show in 1965. While many groups may have collapsed under the pressure, The Mindbenders suddenly found a new lease of life when they struck gold with "A Groovy Kind Of Love", a song that has become synonymous with the "Swinging '60s". It was this, and several other follow-up singles that prompted their numerous BBC sessions from 1966 to 1968. London Calling presents The Mindbenders in session for the BBC with host Brian Matthew. BOCCIA, LEONARDO V. Homenagem LP
"Lugar Alto presents their very first release: the incredibly rare and absolutely stunning Homenagem, by Leonardo V. Boccia. This is a forgotten gem from the eighties that examines traditional Brazilian themes such as choro, northeastern folk, and capoeira with touches of eighties electronics and new age. Leonardo Boccia is a musi-cian, multi-instrumentalist, composer, researcher and university professor of Culture and Society at the Federal University of Bahia, whose interests include sound studies, manipulation of sound media, audiosphere and aesthetics, musical theatre, audio cul-ture and neuromusic. Born in Italy, this respected academic studied music in Berlin, moved to Rio de Janeiro and established himself in Salvador where he was invited to research the northeastern music of Bahia. There he created the experimental group Macchina Naturale, an eclectic combo that performed regularly during his stay. In No-vember 1980, Boccia participated in the first Instrumental Music Festival of Bahia as a soloist where he performed works of his own. But it was in 1983 that Professor Boccia composed, directed and produced the LP Homenagem. With photos by re-nowned photographer and artist Mario Cravo Neto for the front and back cover of the booklet, the album presents new and original compositions for instrumental ensembles, such as: 'Choro Fantasia' -- for guitar and berimbau --, 'Canção para Iracema', 'Home-nagem', and 'Lenda do Sertão'. The LP was originally released on January 3rd, 1984, with a live performance in the main hall of the Castro Alves Theatre under the title Trib-ute to Brazilian Music, with the participation of vocalist Sueli Sodré, who contributes to the album, instrumentalists Zeno Millet and Onias Camardelli, accompanied by chore-ography and visuals. Much of Homenagem examines the genre of Brazilian music known as Choro, or Chorinho, a genre which appeared in Rio de Janeiro in the 19th century. Choro is regarded as the first typically Brazilian urban music and, over the years, it has come to be considered one of the most prestigious genres of national pop-ular music. Stylistically, it originates from Lundu, a percussion-based rhythm of African inspiration but also influenced by European genres. The instrumental composition of choro was based on the trinca flute, guitar and cavaquinho. Over time, other wind and string instruments were incorporated. Here, in Homenagem, Professor Boccia deliberately mixes the old and the new, the traditional and the innovative; the album is the environment of Chorinho reconsidered and recontextualized, and its melodies and harmonies still capable of surprises. Just listen to 'Terra e Povo' -- it has an almost pro-to-acid-house quality to it, while the synth washes on 'Mãe Natureza' with the ethereal vocal stylings of Sueli Sodré ushering in the progressive quality of the album. Too long out of print, new label Lugar Alto now offers you the chance to reappraise this fascinat-ing reissue of yet another forgotten chapter in Brazilian music."

NXUMALO, GIDEON Jazz Fantasia LP
Gideon Nxumalo's Jazz Fantasia is probably the rarest release in South African jazz. Along with Chris McGregor, Nxumalo helped pioneer the pre-exile South African jazz sound. Jazz Fantasia -- originally released in 1962 -- is widely regarded as a seminal South African jazz record. The record features legendary jazz altoist Kippie Moeketsi and a very young Dudu Pukwana. Pukwana plays sax in a similar style to Albert Ayler; Moeketsi was a colossal South African jazz figure during this time. Jazz Fantasia signaled Moeketsi's last commercial success before his struggles with alcohol and depression took their toll. The album was recorded at the Great Hall at Wits University in September 1962. It was commissioned by the university as part of an arts festival. With a limited pressing at the time, the album has become a revered foundation of modern South African jazz music, even though it is a rare album to find. Edition of 500.

High quality musicianship and some far-out stoner tracks make this album stand head-and-shoulders above most of its private press peers. Original released in a very limited issue -- rumor has it that only 300 were pressed -- this album was handed out at their shows and sold only to local record stores. Only together for nine months, Mike Selesia (who plays sax and flute) and band recorded this album in one day presented this fascinating hybrid of early '60s Coltrane, early '70s Miles Davis. VILOD The Clouds Know 2LP
Ricardo Villalobos and Max Loderbauer as Vilod, with their second full-length album following 2015's cult classic Safe in Harbour on Perlon. Housed in a stunning gatefold sleeve. "Cryptic, twilight emissions from Villalobos and Loderbauer; their synthetic compound of electronics and ouroboros jazz has walked from ECM and Perlon over to Mana. Developing a sound that tends to drift along as otherworldly atmospheres and strange fusion, Vilod evade easy categorisation, even compared to Villalobos' already experimental and genre-twisting solo minimal offerings. He and Loderbauer pull away the backbone inherent to the structure of that dance music, and The Clouds Know refines a deft and subtle musical noir built on ambient cues, sparks and claps of electricity, brushed drums, black voids and subterranean bass swoops. There's a twinkle in the eye and moments of deadpan levity, but the overall mood here is sober and introspective. Emotions run deep. Through studio mastery and an enigmatic language, the album forms a fascinating sonic and sensory work with few compromises. With erratic rhythms notably submerged -- techno remains as an irregular pulse in the belly of the beast -- fields of crisp, uncanny detail expand greatly. Humid environments appear, dense with the chatter of synthesized insects and the gentle rain of drums and whispering cymbals, enchanting the listener in focus or sublimating into layers of ambience depending on your disposition -- and the quality of your stereo field."

The Christmas-weekend stadium-filled concert deeply challenged and disturbed South Africa's apartheid regime. Makeba and Masekela were banned from entering South Africa, yet tens of thousands of their South African fans invaded Lesotho to party with their musical heroes. Live in Lesotho documents an inspired Hugh Masekela and his stellar New York band putting a new spin on crowd favourites. Another South African jazz gem from Matsuli Music's growing catalogue of essential high-quality reissues. BALDINO, ANTHONY Twelve Twenty Two 2LP
A mind-bending blend of modular synth performance, Anthony Baldino's dynamic Twelve Twenty Two LP is a treat for all ears. "The record focuses heavily on the modular synth as a composition tool and instrument. I originally approached this as a collection of tracks that were recorded straight out of the machine with little to no editing. The work flow of generating a complex patch and then figuring out the overall arch and performance of the piece was really exciting. The Tip Top Audio Circadian Rhythms was a key compositional tool in this process and was used to organize the overall structure of these pieces. It wasn't until I stumbled upon a patch, the opening synths in 'Fading Quickly Now,' that I went back to how I used to write and shifted to harvesting sounds and rhythms from the modular and arranging and editing them in the box. That patch was originally created for a different track on the album, which I'll let you find, but IH and accidentally changed the clock rate before tearing the patch down. Hearing it in that new way triggered a whole new thought process and emotional reaction for me." --Anthony Baldino Originally approached as a collection of tracks recorded straight out of Baldino's machine with little editing, Twelve Twenty Two is a complex piece of thoughtful modular work. A truly stunning display of masterful sound design, Baldino's sound resonates with listeners from first note to last. Existing in a unique space where ambient sounds meet vivacious bass, Baldino seemingly exists in an impressive league of his own, with Twelve Twenty Two stands apart powerfully from the masses. With an already powerful arsenal of artists and releases, MethLab Recordings adds a brilliant ten-track addition to their already wild playbook.

BARKER, LIAM Voice Of The Eagle: The Enigma Of Robbie Basho DVD
"Voice of the Eagle: The Enigma of Robbie Basho is a feature-length documentary on the extraordinary life and visionary music of the American guitarist, singer and mystic Robbie Basho. Before his bizarre death at the hands of a chiropractor, Robbie Basho was sure that his compositions would not outlast him. Orphaned during infancy, diagnosed with synaesthesia (a union of the senses that caused him to interpret sound as color) and claiming to be the reincarnation of a 17th century poet -- the Baltimore-born, Berkeley-based guitarist and singer's musical output was equally as outlandish as his persona. In his brief and troubled life, he laid the foundations for radical changes to the musical landscape of America during the 1960s and '70s but reaped little more than a sparse (if fervent) following during his lifetime. Voice of the Eagle: The Enigma of Robbie Basho is a journey into the heart of an artist's lifelong struggle: designed to illuminate and satiate existing fans while serving as a perfect starting point for the uninitiated. Featuring interviews with Basho's former students, contemporaries and few close friends (including Pete Townshend, William Ackerman, Henry Kaiser and Country Joe McDonald), the documentary integrates new information and anecdotes on Basho with previously uncovered archive material and photography of the landscapes and natural phenomena that informed his work." 87 minutes; 16:9; NTSC DVD, all regions.

RENEE Change Yor Style (Incl. Prins Thomas Edit) 12"
In 1980, Dutch outfit Renée came out with the album Reaching For The Sky. It's made of delicate pop-songs, with lovely little hooks and ice-cold guitars. From songs that sounds almost ABBA, to more Reggae-sounding stuff, and avant pop. In the middle of it all you'll find Anja Nodelijks hypnotic voice. The albums highlight is the song "Change Your Style", already a semi-classic on the Balearic scene. The song can probably be described as "wonky pop funk", with a twist. On the A-side you get the original. On the B-side Prins Thomas has stretched the greater parts, giving the song the length it probably deserves. Almost six minutes of bliss. Renée's "Change Your Style" is the second release by Norwegian label Neppå. This piece of music has never been presented like this before, with the song cut over a whole side of 12" vinyl. The music is remastered, and licensed from CNR entertainment. Second release for Neppå, the Oslo-based label focusing on lost and overseen recordings.

MILLER, LLOYD Oriental Jazz LP
"Born in 1938, and raised in Glendale, California, Lloyd Miller has had one of the most unusual careers in all of jazz. By age 12 he had declared an intent to make his living as a jazz musician, and by high school he had already begun to experiment, shunning swing music's mechanical perfection, and chafing at his parents' desire for him to nurture his talents with formal training. This tumultous relationship with his parents would eventually lead to a stint in a psychatric hospital, before reuniting with them in moving to Iran, his father having accepted a job working for the Shah. Stops in Hong Kong, Japan and Pakistan on the way to Iran deepened Miller's connection to other cultures he'd first felt while listening to old world music compilations. He felt a definite calm and peace, an immense respect from everyone towards everyone else, and immersed himself in other cultures and languages immediately. Miller spent a year in Iran with his family, picking up Farsi after a few short months, and steadily gaining more and more of an appreciation for how deep the roots of Persian art run. However, still committed to his decision forge a career in jazz, Lloyd left Tehran in 1958 to head to Europe to see if he could make a living from jazz music. Miller kicked around the continent, first in Germany, then in Switzerland, Sweden and Brussels. He collaborated and performed alongside 60s jazz legend Jef Gilson, and experimented with exotic instrumentation before returning to America to resume his studies at Brigham Young University in Utah. In the years following his stint with Gilson, Miller had become more and more disillusioned with both modern music and modern society, which had ashewed jazz for rock music, which he detested. In Miller's conception, for a music to have value it had to have a deep connection to a tradition, specifically connecting jazz to African lore. To Miller, something like 'Tuareg African music is blues, just with no chord changes.' Oriental Jazz was recorded, compiled and self-released in 1968 while Miller was studying at Brigham Young. The record, originally pressed in a quantity of 300 copies, sought to combine a cool, modal style with the exotic arrays of instruments and styles that Miller had picked up during his travels. Miller included songs he'd cut with Gilson in his Parisian studio years before, and a solo piano piece that he recorded in one of the school's practice rooms. Despite Lloyd's professed aversion to modernity, there nevertheless is something strikingly new sounding about this music, which fits together in startling juxtapositions. Traces of Bill Evans, Stan Getz and Jimmy Giuffre rub shoulders with Persian santur, Arab oud and Turkish saz music. Copies of Oriental Jazz languished in Miller's home for years after numerous failed bids for record contracts, before finally ending up in the hands of record collectors decades later. After its release however, he would find a second life after returning to Iran, doing field recordings, and eventually hosting a weekly television show that programmed both American jazz and the best traditional Persian musicians he could find. It was not to last however, as he abruptly abandoned the country to return to the US in the late 1970s, predicting the arrival of the Islamic Revolution."

EAMON Captive Thoughts CD
"Platinum recording artist and unapologetic soul singer Eamon is set to release his new album Captive Thoughts on Now-Again Records. After his ambitious and critically acclaimed 2017 album Golden Rail Motel, Eamon's new record feels like an even deeper expression of the lost art of the singer's ability to make the listener feel every single lyric. 'Simply put, I'm singing every note as if my life depends on it' says Eamon through a thick Staten Island accent that hasn't faded since relocating to Los Angeles. Now-Again Records was so impressed with Eamon's Golden Rail Motel that they approached the singer and offered him a unique deal: he could comb through their vast catalog of songs from the 60's and 70's in order to sample music to create an album of his own. At first working with Stoupe, the producer from legendary hip hop group Jedi Mind Tricks, Eamon would stay up late into the night sifting through sample upon sample in search of the perfect fit for the album. Eamon then approached his steadfast producers Benj Heard and Snipe Young with seven songs to tackle together. The end result was something fresh and forward looking but also a throwback to the golden era of soul music. While many will remember Eamon for his groundbreaking song 'Fuck It (I Don't Want You Back)', the music he has recorded since his comeback from his decade-long hiatus represent the evolution from a controversial kid to a dynamic and respected artist. Captive Thoughts channels Eamon's childhood performing in his father's doo wop group, his immersion in 1990's New York hip hop, his obsession of classic soul music, and the intense lyricism and performances of Golden Rail Motel into one, cohesive album that is capable of moving the listener in unexpected ways. Eamon's voice communicates the highs and lows of being human with his unforgettable style. This record, like the songs it samples, is here to stay."

DROZD, MAGDA Songs for Plants LP
The title of Magda Drozd's debut album, Songs for Plants, goes beyond the invocation of an unusual implied audience and indicates her desire to challenge conventional listening experiences. Plants have been central to the writing-process of the eleven-song LP by the musician, artist, performer, and curator. Drozd's sound palette includes synthesizers, field recordings, a violin, guitar, her own voice, and recordings of cacti, the latter of which were made using the latest recording technology that allowed Drozd to render audible the sound of the prickly pear for example. In this way, Drozd raises questions about authorship while she also shows up the absurdity of the relentless pursuit of new sonic sources in contemporary experimental music. All this leaves Drozd with a highly poetic album located somewhere between experimental electronics, ambient, off-pop, and dub techno. Tender and abrasive at times, she manages to combine the melancholic, critical, hopeful, and distanced -- as if Grouper, Jan Jelinek, The Space Lady, and Hieroglyphic Being got together to re-record Alec Empire's Low on Ice (1995).

RAIME Planted 12"
Raime explore exquisitely honed rhythmic instincts with scintillating results on the second release on their RR label. Where the London duo's 2018 EP and RR debut We Can't Be That Far From The Beginning (RR 001EP, 2018) evoked a meditative mood from the info overload of their home city that left acres of space to the imagination, the Planted EP rejoins the dance with four tracks that icily acknowledge strong influence from Latin American and Chicago footwork styles in a classically skooled mutation of hardcore British dance music. In four, fleetingly ambiguous dancefloor workouts they carry on a conceptual theme exploring the digital subconscious with persistently invasive, alien ambient shrapnel -- half-heard voices, aleatoric prangs, and tag-covered signposts -- woven into and through their tightly coiled and reflexive drum programming. Uptown, "Num" flexes tendons and hips like a Leonce riddim that danced all the way from NOLA and ATL to the wintery dawn of a LDN warehouse, while the lip-biting tension of minimalist 160bpm jungle/footwork patterns and jibber-jawed vocals in "Ripli" suggests the Alien film's protagonist lost in a mazy rave space, chased by H.R. Giger-designed face huggers (or gurning energy vampires). Downtown "Kella" then catches them on a grimy dub-tech bounce, cocked back and straining at the harness, before "Belly" shuts down the dance with invasive, demonic motifs exploding over dark blue chords, and palpitating jungle subs with impeccable darkside style. RIYL: Leonce, Kode 9, Demdike Stare, Lee Gamble. Edition of 500.

Restocked. Rabid consists of six tracks mixed by Phillip B. Klingler, aka PBK, between 2004 and 2006 using Wolf Eyes source material, this is the Wolf Eyes lineup of 2000 to 2005: Nate Young, John Olson and Aaron Dilloway. Klingler: "I was given the audio sources (via cdr) by John Olson at the Ear Candy Festival in Dearborn, Michigan, in 2004. None of the compositions on the album were completed using a computer, they were all recorded live in my home studio or at gigs and radio shows directly to digital." Three of the pieces on the LP were previously released in Russia on the CD, Under My Breath in 2009. Also in 2009, the American Tapes label run by John Olson released a CDR of the PBK & Wolf Eyes collaborative tracks as part of the ongoing "Live Frying" series. Later, Rabid was available for a brief time as a net release. One review from the time stated: "Not a single track passes by without conveying grisly and creepy sensations of imminent death or disaster." Mastered for vinyl by Giuseppe Ielasi and with the beautiful cover illustration created by Pole Ka. American composer, Phillip B. Klingler, better known as PBK, has been active in the experimental music underground since 1986. His compositions are created using extreme turntable manipulation, sampling, analog and digital synthesis. Improvising spontaneously and with little preconception, PBK creates pulsing, dense soundscapes of unknown sonic origin. Wolf Eyes is a post-industrial/noise band from Detroit, Michigan. They are widely considered the "kings of US noise." "Their development since the earliest rumblings in 1997 has yielded some of the most staggering and genre-defining sounds of noise and sound art's dense, largely obscured history." -- Allmusic.

VA Sin City Jukebox Volume 2 LP
Message from Stag-O-Lee: "When I visited New Orleans in 2004 in struck a friendship with a cab driver named Herb H. Franklin. He showed me great record shops and restaurants and told me his interesting life story. Herb was born in 1930 in Wiggins, Mississippi, and he moved down to the coast town of Biloxi with his parents at the age of ten. He later trained to be an auto mechanic, but as he hated getting grease under his fingernails, he opted to do what he did best -- hang out in bars. So in 1950 he took a bartending job at The Smithwick's -- a watering hole in Biloxi, just off Beach Boulevard. When his boss retired in 1955, Herb H. Franklin became the new owner of the bar. A month of renovation followed and the place reopened in Fall 1955 as Sin City, an unofficial name, as the sign outside the bar just said 'Liquor'. Herb said it was a long, rectangular room with a bar on the left, chairs and tables to the right, and a stage for live music at the end. The pool tables were relocated to a side room to make 'plenty of space for sinning,' according to Herb. There were rockin' bands on the weekends, sweaty dancers every night, and a jukebox that was wired to the house sound system so it could be heard over the general ruckus of the bar. And that jukebox did its work until the mid- 1960s, when Herb closed the place. Amazingly, however, every 45 that ever graced the Sin City jukebox remained in Herb's possession. Whenever the jukebox operator came to bring in the new tunes, Herb gave him some small change to keep the replaced ones. As a result, 15 years of serious record collecting took place, without Herb even giving it a second thought. And here are some of his tunes..." HELKTRAM Recoil EP 12"
After his first appearance on Subaltern's Kaleidoscope Vol.1 (SUBALT 013EP, 2017) with the scorching "Alter", far-east sonic assassin and Back To Chill member Helktram makes his comeback on Subaltern Records with a heavy-as-stone three tracker. Each of the cuts is a dancefloor weapon which shows a different side of the Japanese mastermind's razor-sharp production. Opening with a crunchy guitar melody, "Recoil" sets the pace of the EP: a catchy and relentless bass-line takes you on a march through forests and mountains, as distant pads and SFXs remind us to stay alert. After the first round the guitar comes back, warning you that you're not done yet. A straight hitter which will keep playing in your head long after the night is over. The aptly titled "Mineral" is hard as diamond and rough as coal. This triplet juggernaut tramples systems all over the world leaving its mark on any raver who encounters it. A sinister, Theremin-esque melody paves the way to a stripped-down beat with a militant bass riff. Skillfully executed distortion engulfs the low-end turning it into a powerful growly wobble. A threatening melody paints the post-apocalyptic landscape of the EP's third cut, "Beware", in what is Helktram's trademark style. In this track distortion is the name of the game: an unforgiving lead matched by grimy and glitchy stabs evolves into an uninterrupted riff which carries the rhythm leaving space for the bass melody. As the title suggests, extreme caution is required when handling this blaster.

GERGIS, MARK Early-Century Sound Recordings Cassette
Mark Gergis is a producer, musician and audiovisual archivist known for his radio and video productions, recordings, and performances. His work has focused on regional folk-pop music from the Middle East and Southeast Asia, including choubi and dabke from Iraq and Syria. As an archivist, Gergis is currently working on the project Syrian Cassette Archives, for which he aims to restore, preserve, catalog and share his large collection of Syrian media from what can be called Syria's "cassette era" (1970s-2010). As an artist, under his name and others (Porest) he has released music on the Sublime Frequencies, Discrepant, and Nashazphone, to name just a few. It's a wonder that amongst this hectic schedule he still finds time to present us with a new (old) collection of early century recordings (1999-2013). Locational recordings, radio, and TV intercepts, cassette excerpts, environments, and street music all expertly all expertly meshed into a vivid sound journey from places that were (and might) never be again.

BUNNY HOOVA Longing LP
Bunny Hoova is the producer otherwise known as D.Loman. 2019 marks the release of the auspicious debut album. Originally from Rotterdam now residing in Manchester, Bunny Hoova has found a comfortable home amidst the city's burgeoning music scene. Three years in the making, Longing connects her movements from music school in Amsterdam to recent ventures across Lancashire through to her new found home in the rainy city. Anchored around a slurred, soulful vocal, the 13 tracks interweave treated samples and guitars with spare, low key drums; all glued together by Hoova's imaginative production. Striking her own wavy line between garage art-pop and ramshackle soul. Bunny Hoova's witty songcraft characterizes the album. Demonstrating a distinct duality in style, as half of the album rushes with punk energy, the other leans with an ambient, smoked-out flex. Lyrically self-assured and not ashamed to be vulnerable, Longing wrestles with various states of realization as online relationships build and crash, emotions blur and trust is drawn into question. The arrangements are packed with surprises. Longing jukes and jolts, consistently pulling the rug out and offering another fine moment of pop seduction. Catchier moments are curbed by subtle, off-kilter production techniques avoiding any fashionable convention. Obscure samples and found-sound smatterings add texture for the more experimental souls. Limited edition blue vinyl.

AMBERFLAME Pulse Code EP 12"
Pulse Code EP by Amberflame -- Andrei Zakharov's (aka An-2) side project aimed at finding the right balance between organic yet experimental sound -- is a selection of top-notch electronica with the flair of old-school disco and everything in between. The crafty and meticulous use of a variety of custom analogue hardware give way to keeping an open mind with production and sound design, which varies greatly, but at the same time, shares a coherent quality throughout the EP. The opening track "Hope" sets the mood with its melancholic airy strings and pulsating arpeggios developing effortlessly until the groovy guitar bass kicks in lighting things up and giving the mix a completely new perspective. Taking a more experimental edge "Pulse Code" is a PCM-inspired leftfield electronica piece which goes a new direction with its solid synth work and fluent drum programming. The title of the closing cut "Dreamscape" speaks for itself: it is a meditative electro-focused affair.

SANDERS, PHAROAH Journey to the One 2LP
Originally released in 1980. Gatefold sleeve. "This double LP contains all ten of Pharoah Sanders' performances from the Journey To The One sessions. As usual, Sanders shifts between spiritual peace and violent outbursts in his tenor solos. The backup group changes from track to track but often includes pianist John Hicks, bassist Ray Drummond, and drummer Idris Muhammad. Sanders really recalls his former boss John Coltrane on 'After the Rain' (taken as a duet with pianist Joe Bonner) and a romantic 'Easy to Remember'. Other high points include 'You've Got to Have Freedom' (which has Bobby McFerrin as one of the background singers) and the exotic 'Kazuko', on which Sanders is accompanied by kato, harmonium, and wind chimes." --Scott Yanow, All About Music

BARLEY, KIRK Landscapes LP
Landscapes is the latest release from prolific Yorkshire born composer and producer Kirk Barley (Bambooman). Across a tight 34-minute runtime, the album presents eleven short pieces that inhabit an exotic, other-worldly space of chiming guitars, buzzing insects, and squelching synth tones. Working with looped fragments of his own instrumental, electronic, and field-recorded sounds, Barley assembled the tracks from edited improvisations, some of them enriched with live drums from Matt Davies. Barley's skittering, off-kilter loops overlap freely, combining with meter-less, free-jazz-inspired drumming, and processed environmental field recordings to craft gently surging sonic environments. At once static and constantly shifting, the pieces unfold themselves like views of a landscape, where we take in individual details one at a time while always remaining aware of the whole. Deeply influenced by the "Fourth World" philosophies of trumpeter Jon Hassell, champion of a music bridging global traditions and contemporary technologies, Landscapes integrates electro-acoustic techniques with suggestions of a variety of non-western musical forms, from the pitched percussion effects of "Water Wheel" (calling to mind the incredible bamboo tube percussion of Solomon Islands music) to the stately Gamelan-esque procession of clanging metallic tones and deep, filtered synth chords that underlies the pop and crackle of fireworks on "Ark". Several pieces make use of a drifting pentatonic harmony that brings them close to the work of Japanese ambient pioneer Hiroshi Yoshimura, though Barley's productions are so rich in detail and surprise that they demand active listening. At other times, a distinctly English sensibility makes itself felt in the pastoral expanses of gently spaced chords and chiming guitar harmonics, calling up the delicate miniatures of Simon Fisher Turner and Colin Lloyd Tucker's cult Deux Filles project. Landscapes is an unassuming but powerful work that uses a rich array of details, materials, and techniques to conjure 11 snapshots of a unique sound world, one both comforting and disorienting. Recommended for anyone moved by the evocative sketches of Eno's Music for Films (1976), the fourth world fusion of Jon Hassell, the abstract explorations of the far-side of club music techniques of Giuseppe Ielasi/Inventing Masks or the tropical soundscapes of Lievens Martens/Dolphins Into The Future.

HOLMES & BRIAN IRVINE, DAVID Ordinary Love LP
Touch Sensitive Records present their third release with Ivor Novello and BAFTA Award-winning modern master of the soundtrack, David Holmes, working in collaboration with composer Brian Irvine. Set in Northern Ireland, directed by Holmes's longtime friends Glenn Leyburn and Lisa Barros D'Sa (Good Vibrations (2012), Cherrybomb (2009)), and written by legendary Irish playwright Owen McCafferty (whom Holmes has known for forty years), the film tells the extraordinary story of Tom (Liam Neeson) and Joan (Lesley Manville) -- their life and love as they enter the uncertainty and upset of Joan's cancer diagnosis. In a career rich in highly personal work, Ordinary Love is up there with the most affecting in Holmes's canon. Recorded between Abbey Road and Holmes's own Drama Studio, the soundtrack features input from some of his most trusted collaborators. Holmes states: "I worked on the score with Brian Irvine. He is a longtime friend and the first person I ever had studio experience with 27 years ago. It felt important to work with Brian on this as his father (Ronnie), Owen's father (Gerry) and my father (Jackie) -- all now deceased -- were great friends through a shared love of Point-to-Point horse racing and their work as bookmakers." With contributions from Holmes's bandmates, Jade Vincent and Keefus Ciancia, who comprise the trio Unloved. Vincent provides a stand-out performance -- lending her haunting and smoky vocals to the album's centerpiece and final track -- "Isn't It So". The score to Ordinary Love wasn't inspired by any other soundtrack or even musical composition but by a mathematical theory called The Game of Life. Devised by mathematician John Conway in 1970, The Game of Life consists of a collection of cells which, based on a few mathematical rules, can live, die or multiply as the cells form various patterns throughout the course of the game. "Because of the nature of the story, this really spoke to Brian and I in a musical sense and we started to create the score with the notion that the notes in each cue resembled human cells, living and dying as Joan's journey with cancer unfolded." The score uses gentle rhythms and repetition to underline the comfort and balance in Tom and Joan's routine -- even though a potentially life-changing event looms over them. The score grounds the listener whilst providing an almost dreamlike blank canvas in which to live and to love.

CAMP LO Uptown Saturday Night 2LP
2019 repress; 2010 reissue. "Camp Lo's first record, which did not disappoint. It struck the perfect balance between club tracks and underground bangers for the mixtape crowd. Critically acclaimed and fan approved, this late '90s album must-have was complimented by the incredible cover art illustrated by legendary NYC graffiti artist Dr. Revolt that paid homage to Marvin Gaye's 1976 classic I Want You. It's hard to believe in the time of Puffy's heyday, Camp Lo had developed and delivered a style of hip hop that was not only fresh and creative, but also straight up dope. Flipping intricate rhyme styles over some of Rap's finer beats, the fact that Camp Lo got main stream radio play and love from big time club DJ's is a testament to the essence of what hip hop was once about: raw talent and originality! Remastered from the original tapes and pressed on loud double vinyl."

FUNCTION Existenz 2CD
Function's long career has seen him uncover a vast range of sonic identities, a mainstay through house, techno and industrial with collaborations with the likes of Regis, Damon Wild, alongside his highly influential Infrastructure imprint. With influences deeply tied to pop art, rave, and gay scenes, and early memories of block-parties emitting Kraftwerk and Strafe, he found himself seeking out the undercover illegal nights of the '90s on a quest of sexual unearthing, mixing the ever-yearning escapology mission of disco with the influential DJ sets of Jeff Mills. For his new album Existenz, he marks a clear step away from the corporeal techno of his recent releases. Pivoting around themes of religion, sexuality, trauma, and healing, it is a work expansive and celebratory, a clear liberation from a deeply internalized past. Formed from a collection of recordings made in a period from late 2016 to mid-2019, Existenz takes the form of a creative outburst in reaction to a number of traumas. Life partner Stefanie Parnow assisted the production process in its entirety, providing inspiration, spiritual healing, and featuring vocal contributions. Cosmic synths soar and swoop in "Pleasure Discipline" through towering stacks of rhythm that stutter and creak to a halt before rebooting, a firm robotic response to human intervention. "Zahlensender" reflects a spatial Tetris of urban life, as digitalization set within an XYZ matrix confronts the sprawling city. "The Approach" recalls the unification of the self, a state of delirium non-subjective and smooth, as all connections and functions give way to simple intensities of feeling, crossing the threshold into spirituality. "Golden Dawn", featuring Stefanie Parnow, marks a further elevation of dubbed-out euphoria. His ode to the effortless short-trip urban navigation "Kurzstrecke" finds Function in motion, upfront, and bold, snapshots of conversation and flickers of light. "Ertrinken" finds metallic bass jabs swamping snipped synthetic voices, with hidden stores of emotion set as a nod to the history of vocoders as a tool for encrypted military communication. House icon Robert Owens features on "Growth Cycle" and "Be", entrenching a celebratory atmosphere over Function's clubwise leanings. "Downtown 161" reflects the unmistakable filtered and squashed interjections of television, and sampled dance vocals -- a sound for the curious, dreamers and dancers. With Existenz, Function reveals an essential body of work -- thought experiments on the role of identity and spirituality after a lifetime of upheaval and trauma. Double-CD version includes a 12-page booklet.

POP. 1280 Way Station LP
LP version. New York industrial punk band Pop. 1280 return with the album Way Station. The album's genesis took them back to when they were putting the finishing touches on their third LP, Paradise (Sacred Bones, 2016). Returning to New York, hungry to write new songs, the band decided to rethink their musical model. Their weekly band practice nights became sampling sessions, the exploration of new and disorienting sounds that they could adapt to their new confinement. The simplicity of the duo led to an aesthetic of minimalism, and they could figure out how to perform the songs live later. Now was about expunging their systems of the creative virus. The door began to creak open when Matthew Hord (Running) moved to New York in 2018 and the band discovered he knew more about analog synth hardware than anyone they'd worked with before in Pop.1280. Lyrically, Pop. 1280 plumbed the deepest depths of their inner selves and also allowed themselves to translate those painful and fearful themes to new extremes of purpose.
