JARMUSCH, JIM The Limits Of Control BLU-RAY
"When it comes to American independent cinema, there's no one quite like Jim Jarmusch, the celebrated auteur behind such classics as Stranger Than Paradise and Only Lovers Left Alive. Eschewing his usual American landscapes in favor of a variety of locations throughout urban and rural Spain, his 2009 anti-thriller The Limits of Control remains one of his most alluring and multi-layered creations. An enigmatic loner (Isaach de Bankolé, Black Panther, Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai) arrives in Spain, instructed to make contact with a series of strangers in different locations throughout the country, each of whom provides a cryptic clue which propels him further towards his mysterious goal. But who is the Lone Man? Why is he here? And how does the recurring figure of an alluring femme fatale (Paz de la Huerta, Enter the Void) fit into the puzzle? Boasting stunning cinematography by the award-winning Christopher Doyle (In the Mood for Love) and featuring cameos from an array of celebrated character actors, including Tilda Swinton (The Grand Budapest Hotel), Gael García Bernal (Y Tu Mamá También) and the late John Hurt (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), The Limits Of Control is a languid, hauntingly beautiful film that combines the best of American and European arthouse sensibilities. High Definition Blu-ray -- (1080p) presentation. Original lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and PCM 2.0 stereo soundtracks."

HILL, GEORGE ROY Slaughterhouse-Five BLU-RAY
"First time special edition release of the award-winning sci-fi classic! Billy pilgrim lives - from time to time to time... Past, present and future collide in darkly satirical fashion in Slaughterhouse-Five! Based on Kurt Vonnegut's classic 1969 novel, this tale of time travel and alien abduction emerged as part of a wave of more cerebral science-fiction films in the late 60s to early 70s, elevating the genre beyond the B-movie fare of previous decades. Upstate New York, 1968. Mild-mannered Billy Pilgrim (Michael Sacks, The Sugarland Express) finds himself 'unstuck in time'. Traveling back and forth across the entire span of his existence, he experiences key events of his life in a random order, including his formative years, the firebombing of Dresden and finally, at some undefined point in the future, his surreal adventures on a distant planet. Praised by Vonnegut himself for its fidelity to his novel, Slaughterhouse-Five boasts assured direction by George Roy Hill (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) and a memorable score by renowned concert pianist Glenn Gould. Now exclusively restored in 4K, Slaughterhouse-Five shines like never before, reinforcing its timeless appeal. Brand new 4K restoration from the original camera negative, produced by Arrow Video exclusively for this release. High Definition (1080p) Blu-ray presentation."

ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE MELTING PARAISO U.F.O. Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. 2LP
Restocked. Black Editions presents the deluxe, first-ever vinyl edition of Acid Mothers Temple's classic self-titled first album. Over the last 25 years no group has been more prolific or dedicated to pushing psychedelic rock to its limits than Japan's Acid Mothers Temple. Their maximalist technicolor vision was first revealed on this, their now legendary self-titled 1997 debut released by P.S.F. Records. Led by Makoto Kawabata, the album contains some of the group's most cosmic, hypnotic and over-the-top material; it kick-started and set the tone for a journey that has included countless releases and performances around the world -- a freaked-out trip that continues to this day. Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. is one of the essential albums of the world's psychedelic underground. Deluxe Edition housed in ten-color heavy tip-on gatefold jackets, featuring soft touch and spot gloss finishes and full color interior pockets. BJARGO, PETER Structures And Downfall LP
"After putting ARCANA to rest in the past year, Peter Bjärgö has now channeled his creative energy towards his solo works. On what is now his fourth full length solo album, we are granted a calm, thoughtful and at times somber aural voyage. Melodic atmospheric guitar work, lush string arrangements and slow, heavy percussive rhythms are present and elevated to new heights. Written and recorded while beholding a wintry landscape in his newly built studio 'Asham Room', he's created a perfect balance of complex structures through his distinctive sorrowful, yet hopeful songwriting."

REVILLOS, THE From The Freezer CD
"Reissue of our classic Revillos! compilation. Twenty track CD compilation of rare and unreleased gems from The Revillos! archives including the original versions of their first two singles 'Wheres The Boy For Me' and 'Motorbike Beat'. Great fold-out booklet with loads of rare photos and Revealing facts too! After the blow out of the Rezillos, Sire (their label) agreed to let Eugene and Fay out of their contract on the condition that they didn't use the 'Rezillos' name. So, Eugene came up with a new name - The Revillos! Virgin Records were interested enough to fund a new label specifically for the band (Snatzo) which operated under Virgin's DinDisc subsidiary. The deal was signed in June 1979 and there was a lot of media interest. Eugene Reynolds, Fay Fife, and Rocky Rhythm formed the core of the Revillos! The first incarnation of the band featured original Rezillo-member Hi Fi Harris on guitar, Felix on bass, and Babs and Cherie on backing vocals. This line-up recorded the early singles 'Where's The Boy For Me?', 'Motorbike Beat', and 'Scuba Scuba'. 'Rocky Rhythm' is credited as 'Robo Rhythm' on the first two singles, and the backing vocal credit on 'Motorbike Beat' goes to The Revettes (Jane White, Jane Brown, Tricia Bryce)."

REVILLOS, THE Live From The Orient CD
"The Revillos! had lain dormant since 1985, but nine years on, we were asked to reform especially for a Japanese tour. All gigs were filmed and the Tokyo performances were captured on an 8-track machine. Finally coming out some two years later in 1996, the resultant album -- on the Vinyl Japan label -- missed off six songs. Most of the original, unreleased mixes became lost. In the ensuing period, Krupa became a very talented producer. In late-2004, he discovered the tapes of all our original mixes, which had been mislaid for ten years. Krupa borrowed my archive of Japanese footage plus audience cassettes, out-takes, and assorted live monitor mixes. Using our rediscovered original mixes as the core, he planned to rebuild the Tokyo show -- pulling the missing elements from these disparate video and audio sources -- using digital technology that was simply not available to us back in 1994. I promised Krupa I'd oversee the release when he'd finished the audio. Sadly, Krupa passed away a few months later, early in 2005. Checking the work on his computer, I found no trace of the Japanese recordings on the hard disk, nor the original masters to which he had alluded. Years went by before I felt up to sifting through the many back-up CDs of Krupa's production and recording output. Eventually I loaded some unmarked data onto the computer and there they were our original mixes transferred to digital! Krupa was keen to see this project through, but his work on compiling the material was still very much unfinished. It was rough, but all there: all the songs, all the original audience response, and even the inter-song banter -- some of which Eugene and Fay had spoken in Japanese. But it had not been segued back into order. Much reconstruction work and EQ-ing was still needed. Fulfilling my commitment, I have personally overseen this restoration. These tapes deserve to be aired, preserving as they do Krupa's final tour with The Revillos." --Rocky Rhythm, London 2019

REVILLOS, THE Compendium Of Weird CD
"Collection of Revillos! rarities. So many years after the demise of The Revillos, can there be any music rotting in the vaults that hasn't already been regurgitated... I thought we had pretty much exhausted our spare tunes with the From The Freezer CD back in 1996. But, shortly before he passed away, I convened with guitarist Kid Krupa to review some of our still-parked material, and we were encouraged enough to revisit the exercise. As we made our selection, the brief we gave ourselves was to not present yet more versions of our already over-represented songs like Motorbike Beat or whatever, but instead to showcase as many rare, bizarre, unreleased out-takes or alternative versions as possible. This compilation has only been possible by sifting through every one of my boxes of tapes from the shed and the attic to rediscover such oddities. I also checked tracks from some other band members and associates. Understandably, the sonic quality of most of this material reflects its provenance, yet their patent rarity warrants these tracks' inclusion: indeed, almost all the material is culled from solitary existing cassette sources. With a lot of damage, including glitches, drop-outs and missing sections, many of these performances were only preserved owing to the digital diligence of Kid Krupa; plus post-production work by myself and Vince Santini; with further mastering tricks squeezed out by Turan Audio in Oxford. The band line-up was quite fluid across the timeframe of these recordings, which were captured between 1979 and 1994 but, generally, Eugene contributes vocals and sax, Fay sings and plays Farfisa and I play Premier drums on all tracks. Additionally, all songs feature Kid Krupa on guitar and Vince Santini on bass unless otherwise noted. Backing vocals are supplied by Revette Cherie, joined by either Babs or Drax -- except for Scuba Scuba and I Wanna Be Your Man -- which feature Frankie and Polly Revette."

STELLAR OM SOURCE I See Through You 12"
If there is one thing that leaps out from Stellar OM Source's music, it is the sense of a highly active mind at work. There is an indivisible feeling that a real person is behind this dynamic flurry of tones, waves, vibrations and modulations. On I See Through You, the first full Stellar OM Source release since 2015, the spark that first LP piqued the interest of so many listeners is glowing stronger than ever. In the 2010s, Christelle Gualdi carved a name as one of the most essential live electronic musicians around, dazzling dancers and home listeners in kind with her bombastic, acidic hardware jams. Stellar OM Source steps into a comparatively more poppy and playful mode on these four tracks could also throw some. Fundamentally she says, it comes from a similar place, and ends with an enmeshed and positive outcome. "Night Alone" wastes no time in getting the listener up to speed. Is that an LFO sample running through "Night Alone"? Is this a lost Metro Area classic? Is that Stellar OM Source taking a diversion into searching Ibiza-rousing vocal for a moment, or did we imagine that in a heat haze? Where are the kicks? Oh, there they are. How many elements are buried and revived within just over five minutes? It's hard to tell. Before you know it, "Lost Codes" is up and away, keeping pulses racing. A pitter-patter of baby kicks feels like a pre-tremor before a welting electro-Italo lead crashes into play. With fizzing energy, rasping synths and a frisson of danger, fans of Unit Moebius and The Hacker will be doing somersaults of joy. "White Echoes" wastes kicks off the flip side with low gurgles descending briefly like a UFO reverse parking into the spot SOS had vacated. Soon, 303s are twisting like Chinese burns while warm chords offer a salve. The mood maintains on "Wild Palms", the only song on this record not to feature additional mixing work from Peaking Lights' dub-wise sensei Aaron Coyes.

ANDERSON QUARTET, FRED Live Volume V CD
"The Velvet Lounge was a door that Fred Anderson opened continuously for decades, an access point through which the human soul could enter and explore the organization and chaos of the cosmos. Through this door the spirits outside also came into our little system. When the exchanges happened, it made a sound of joy, like el: those of us who weren't there are lucky that recording devices were. It's a generation removed and still we can feel their presence from the record. Tatsu Aoki and Hamid Drake played frequently with Fred at the Velvet throughout the 90s, wearing smooth the handle of that door. One night in December of 1994, their guest navigator was trumpeter Toshinori Kondo. The quartet screams at the start, rests beneath a tum-tum tree, picks their way over rocky shoals and sandbars, freaks out. Like a mind, flowing through a door, to a shore, three long tracks. Clarence Bright the bartender recorded the trip on a Tascam DAT recorder. Tatsu kept it two decades on a CD transfer. The CDr skipped badly and they had to use fancy software to extract the audio. Here it is. Trip way out with it."

CASS & GIANNI BREZZO Masala Kiss LP
"Emotional ambient, soft focus synthesis and pastoral programming from German duo Cass. & Gianni Brezzo on Hamburg's Growing Bin. Hopeless romantic with GSOH seeks open minded audiophile for lifelong companionship. The style might change, but the quality remains the same in the Growing Bin. For this autumnal edition, the Hamburg label looks South West to Osnabrück and Cologne, home to Cass. and Gianni Brezzo respectively. Sharing an appreciation for emotive tonality and expansive texture, the two musicians make the perfect partnership on Masala Kiss, Brezzo's timeless melodies only serving to intensify the signature sensuality of the Cass. sound. Despite the occasional polyrhythms, you're hearing two hearts beat as one... Insistent and expressive, well-traveled opener 'Jaybo' joins the ethnic and esoteric with a new age optimism before giving way to the detailed ambience and good nature of 'Umberella', a brief pitstop on the road to the meditative 'Imence Sense'. Alive with layered guitars, this opiated raga dances like hashish smoke in the evening sky, and then it's up into the cloud forms of 'Instabubu' and 'Autoscooter Love', celestial serenades both off and on beat. Cass. and Brezzo set controls for the heart of the sun with the Friesean 'Out Of Mind', a cinematic exercise in precision sequencing and frequency control then start the journey home with the dewy bells and delicate waveforms of 'Koli'. If you're in need of a little new age funk for your poolside playtime 'Helge' and 'Der Däne' are on hand with the chunky bass and languid grooves, while a last-minute interlude provides a prenatal comfort and womblike warmth. I always cry at endings, and 'Paterson' provides pure emotional release in utterly Balearic fashion. Pensive guitar and euphoric synths meet on the waterfront as you stare over the ocean with all the people you love." --Patrick Ryder

SMITH, CHUCK Barbara Rubin & The Exploding NY Underground DVD
"Made when she was just 18 years old, Barbara Rubin's art-porn masterpiece Christmas On Earth (1963-65) shocked NYC's experimental film scene and inspired NYC's thriving underground. For the next four years her filmmaking and irrepressible energy helped shatter artistic and sexist boundaries. A mythical 'Zelig' of the sixties, she introduced Andy Warhol to the Velvet Underground and Bob Dylan to the Kabbalah. But beyond shaping the spirit of the sixties, Barbara was seeking the deeper meaning of life. After retiring to a farm with Allen Ginsberg, she shocked everyone by converting to Hasidic Judaism, marrying and moving to France to live an anonymous life. Tragically, she died in 1980 after giving birth to her fifth child. For years, Jonas Mekas treasured all of Barbara's letters and films and cherished her memory. Working with Mekas' footage, the film takes us inside the world and mind of Barbara Rubin; a woman who truly believed that film could change the world. Critics have christened her The American Rimbaud, for the poetry of her work, the trajectory of her life, and her legacy. This bold, enthusiastic documentary details the unsung yet important role played by Barbara Rubin in the 1960s artistic counterculture and provides an evocative portrait of a vibrant and mysterious artist."

HULA Shadowland CD
"Hula were founded in Sheffield in 1981. Three members (Mark Albrow, Alan Fish and Ron Wright) lived with Stephen Mallinder (Cabaret Voltaire) and Paul Widger (They must be Russians, Clock DVA, The Box) in a villa called Hula Kula. After trying the bass players Alan Watt and Chris Brain (Tense, NOS) Hula recorded the impressive debut album Cut From Inside with Mark Brydon (Chakk, Moloko). Ingredients like cut ups, steady rhythms, and paranoia vocals blended together into a unique white funky sound. Murmur was the band's second album and came out on Red Rhino in 1984. This was also the time of Hula's great singles -- 'Fever Car', 'Get the Habit' and 'Walk on Stalks of Shattered Glass' were all released around that time. Shadowland was published by Red Rhino in 1986 and was a different beast to the previous LPs. The recording was made at a special event: The Sheffield Arts Department commissioned Hula to put together a performance to include certain sound sculptures featured in the Arts Council's touring Noise In Your Eye exhibition. The two long tracks are much more abstract than the songs Hula recorded before and show a more experimental side of this outstanding group. The same year also saw the release of a 12" single named Black Wall Blue. All three tracks are included as bonuses here on this CD. Again, this was remastered by Martin Bowes of Attrition."

EYE Metamujer LP
EYE is back. Metamujer marks the third installment on the Knekelhuis label and the label to release this document of another chapter in Laurène Exposito's life. Recorded on various locations ranging from the Swiss mountains to the chalky coasts of Brittany, Metamujer is an eight-track ode to salty love and closeness to nature, a tribute to a modest lifestyle à la Henry David Thoreau. Far from being praise for self-sufficiency, this new LP is deeply influenced by Laurène's environment. You hear Korg MS-10 created synthetic waves ("Sanatorium") and birds ("Luscinia"), but one can also catch her singing in Italian, one of three languages spoken in Switzerland. Still minimalist and yet more aesthetically diverse, her new sounds are on the edge of EBM and synth pop, between classic minimal wave tunes, and rustic ballads on acid.

SCHULZE, KLAUS La Vie Electronique 3 3CD
"Re-launch of Klaus Schulze's successful La Vie Electronique series (Vol. 1 to 16).La Vie Electronique first was published as a strictly limited 50 CD-Box and later it was released in chronological order in 3CD-sets including some material never released before. Do Synthesists Dream of Electric Bleeps? Thanks to volumes like this one, no longer can newcomers (or even diehard enthusiasts) desiring Klaus Schulze's music use the excuse of its unavailability to deny themselves the pleasure of experience. Already, the glut of this singular musician's back catalog has been revived in full, beautifully reissued and repackaged; all of his original, notoriously hard-to-find (well, at least for those of us living on the other side of the Atlantic pond) recordings, most containing additional tracks, are now easily obtainable, and instantly collectable. The ear can become reacquainted with the vast expanse of Schulze music from its earliest beginnings right up and into its modern incarnations, robust with the now-patented lengthy irises, numerous kaleidoscopic events, and still-innovative breadth of tonalities that have become the artist's stock-in-trade."

VA The Jimi Hendrix Concert: Live At Rockpalast 1991 2CD/DVD
"It was the idea of Peter Bursch, the guitar teacher of the nation and bandleader of the Krautrock legend Bröselmaschine, 20 years after the death of Jimi Hendrix to put together an illustrious crowd of hip musicians and to organize a Rockpalast tribute concert in 1991. Rockpalast mastermind Peter Rüchel and director Christian Wagner were quick to get enthusiastic about this idea. Through his personal contacts Peter was able to find some really competent musicians who were willing to deal with this idea. So an All Star Band was formed from very different exceptional musicians like Uli Jon Roth (Scorpions), who also took over the musical direction of this project, Jack Bruce (Cream, West, Bruce and Laing), John Wetton (King Crimson, Roxy Music, Uriah Heep, UK, Asia etc.), Simon Phillips (The Who, Toto, Asia etc.), the Randy Hansen Band and many others."

SMITH/MAITREYA KALI, CRAIG Apache / Inca 2LP
Double LP version. 16-page, 11x11 book and insert. The psychedelic masterpiece nobody heard -- First ever official, authorized release of psychedelic mega-rarity. After a suffering an LSD-induced mental breakdown, Los Angeles-based songwriter Craig Smith renamed himself Maitreya Kali and custom-pressed Apache / Inca, a double-LP documenting his musical, personal, and spiritual journey. His message to the world, encoded on the album jackets in rambling, quasi-mystical Messianic verse, was urgent, desperate, delusional, and disturbing. Recorded between 1967 and 1971, the music tells a different story. Achingly beautiful, haunting acoustic folk songs; luminescent psychedelic folk-rock; eerie, off-kilter acid rock; fragments; field recordings -- all meticulously woven into a magical, mesmerizing whole. Apache / Inca is an extraordinary work. Not the dark, self-indulgent ramblings of a cracked Messiah, but a thoughtfully-crafted collection of work by a singer and songwriter of remarkable depth and talent whose world was falling apart. Soon afterwards Maitreya -- and Craig -- disappeared into the shadows. He died homeless in a North Hollywood Park in 2012. Decades after its creation, Apache / Inca was discovered by collectors and hailed as a psychedelic masterpiece. It is now one of the most revered and sought-after artifacts of the era. Includes seven tracks by the Penny Arkade, produced by Michael Nesmith. Top quality vinyl pressing at RTI; Heavy duty gatefold jacket by Stoughton Printing with all original artwork; Repro of unique Inca inner sleeve with Maitreya artwork; Limited edition of 500.

MUSICA ESPORADICA Musica Esporadica LP
Music From Memory reissue the cult Spanish studio project Música Esporádica's incredible one off, self-titled album, originally released in 1985. Another Suso Saiz side project, this one grew out of his work with his band Orquesta De Las Nubes, who were themselves the subject of a Music From Memory compilation in 2018 (MFM 033LP). The idea of getting Orquesta De Las Nubes to collaborate with Glen Velez and Layne Redmond arose after the two American musicians visited Spain during a series of seminars on frame drum techniques in 1985. Having met Glen Velez some years before in Madrid whilst Glen was performing with the Steve Reich Ensemble, Suso Saiz and Glen Velez quickly formed a strong friendship over their mutual love of non-Western music and the potentials of repetition within music. The two would play, talk and drinks for many hours in Suso's studio space whenever Glen was in Madrid. During one such session in 1985, Glen and Suso would be joined by Orquesta De Las Nubes and Spanish friend and musician Miguel Herrero. With exciting new ideas flowing quickly and easily, Suso decided to immediately call Track Studios in Madrid to see if they might have a space to record some of the material. With just a few days available the group would record for about 12, with what Suso would describe as "incredible fluency", by which time they would have recorded the album they would later title Música Esporádica. After its release 34 years ago Música Esporádica sounds as stunning as ever and Music From Memory are delighted to be able to share the fluency, spontaneity. and close friendship which fueled the recording of this amazing album.

Orphaned during infancy, diagnosed with synaesthesia (a union of the senses that caused him to interpret sound as color) and claiming to be the reincarnation of a 17th century poet -- the Baltimore-born, Berkeley-based guitarist and singer's musical output was equally as outlandish as his persona. In his brief and troubled life, he laid the foundations for radical changes to the musical landscape of America during the 1960s and '70s but reaped little more than a sparse (if fervent) following during his lifetime. Voice of the Eagle: The Enigma of Robbie Basho is a journey into the heart of an artist's lifelong struggle: designed to illuminate and satiate existing fans while serving as a perfect starting point for the uninitiated. Featuring interviews with Basho's former students, contemporaries and few close friends (including Pete Townshend, William Ackerman, Henry Kaiser and Country Joe McDonald), the documentary integrates new information and anecdotes on Basho with previously uncovered archive material and photography of the landscapes and natural phenomena that informed his work." Deleted and Extended Interviews (410m).

COX, PHIL Betty Davis: They Say I'm Different DVD
"Funk Queen Betty Davis changed the landscape for female artists in America. She 'was the first...' as former husband Miles Davis said. 'Madonna before Madonna, Prince before Prince'. An aspiring songwriter from a small steel town, Betty arrived on the '70s scene to break boundaries for women with her daring personality, iconic fashion and outrageous funk music. She befriended Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone, wrote songs for the Chambers Brothers and the Commodores, and married Miles -- startlingly turning him from jazz to funk on the album she named Bitches Brew. She then, despite being banned and boycotted, went on to become the first black woman to perform, write and manage herself. Betty was a feminist pioneer, inspiring and intimidating in a manner like no woman before. Then suddenly -- she vanished. Creatively blending documentary and animation this movie traces the path of Betty's life, how she grew from humble upbringings to become a fully self-realized black female pioneer the world failed to understand or appreciate. After years of trying, the elusive Betty, forever the free-spirited Black Power Goddess, finally allowed the filmmakers to creatively tell her story based on their conversations."

KIRBY, JOHN CARROLL Tuscany LP
Los Angeles based pianist, producer, and songwriter John Carroll Kirby traveled to Pietrasanta, Italy in the summer of 2018 on a self-imposed writing trip. During his stay he composed Tuscany, a two side-long solo piano exploration of this particular geographical envelope, a place where nature is shaped into form. Kirby would cycle 12 kilometers each day to Cascata di Malbacco, a waterfall with jade pools and silver stone, and the inspiration for Side A of Tuscany. His own "Cascata di Malbacco" tumbles and shimmers along the piano as a gorgeous eighteen-minute-long improvised piece, some of it polished and some moments left raw. On a ride to Sant'Anna, twenty-something kilometers away, Kirby took a wrong turn and got lost among the hills, where he encountered several monuments memorializing the victims of the Sant'Anna di Stazzema massacre. The dark history of an abandoned mill house served as the inspiration for the album's haunting Side B, a eulogy for all of those forgotten by time. Although Side A is inspired by the natural beauty of a waterfall, and Side B by the cruelty that people can inflict upon others, both pieces revolve around the same seven-note bassline. The idea Kirby is iterating on is the realization that darkness exists inside light, and vice versa; Tuscany is an inquiry into this duality and its consequences. John Carroll Kirby has released records on Leaving Records, Outside Insight, and Pinchy & Friends. In the studio and on the road, he's produced and/or played with Connan Mockasin, Blood Orange, Sebastian Tellier, Shabazz Palaces, and Solange. He recently signed to Stones Throw Records. Patience is a new outlet for exploring further beyond the break than usual. Inspired by the music perpetually on rotation at HQ -- with E2-E4 representing the format's high tide mark -- each release will be one artist's deep dive down one inspirational wormhole spread across two sides of vinyl, or two side-long sojourns making full use of a round 12" piece of plastic. Set and forget, zone out to tune in.

CELESTE, SHANTI Tangerine 2LP
Tangerine serves as a coda to the qualities that have established Shanti Celeste as one of the most instinctive and generous underground DJs in the current landscape of dance music. Beginning as a record store assistant at Idle Hands in Bristol and now a fixture of some of the world's most acclaimed clubs and festivals, Celeste's instincts and curiosity have forged a musical space that is very much her own. Here, whether in sweat-drenched basements or to vast numbers, she strikes a common cause between the melodic richness of the legacy of the music of Detroit, alongside the natural ease with which she carries across tempos that embody UK Soundsystem traditions. Tangerine is Celeste's most fully-realized contribution thus far to this continuum of musical culture. More than that, Tangerine is an innate extension of Shanti's self, telling stories beyond her record box and delving into her personal history. There is her manipulated voice serving as a bedrock in tracks. There's a kalimba, recorded at her father's home in Chile. There are, of course, her rich synthesizers that wrap her tracks like velvet cloaks, providing the familiar warmth and color you know from her work so far on labels such as Idle Hands and Future Times. There's even her characteristic paintings on the cover. Here, on her very own Peach Discs, the label she co-runs with good friend Gramrcy, Celeste naturally delivers her most impressive and wholly personal work. Creating Tangerine has been a space for Celeste to explore all of this with a freedom that has come with the easing of expectations that an artist earns with the passing of time. Striking a balance between deeper, understated sounds and building gradually towards the fleet-footed bursts of rave energy that Celeste is known for, Tangerine peels back layers of dreamy textures to reveal an optimistic afterglow, reflecting on a life devoted to club culture. "When I made music for EPs, sometimes I felt restricted," she says. "I would think too much about creating the moments on the dancefloor I love -- seeing visions of ecstatic people hugging, I didn't give myself free reign to express all of myself. Writing an album made me feel free of all this because it seemed like an open-ended project. I could just keep creating until I felt like stopping."

DRAKE, BOB The Gardens Of Beastly Manor CD
"A one-off release of extraordinary instrumental compositions, through-composed and performed by a massed orchestra of Bob on piano, 5-string resonator banjo, Farfisa organ, Korg MS20 synthesizer, electric and acoustic guitars, recorders, drums, bass, chromatic hand-bells, trombone, trumpet and violin. 22 exquisite, enigmatic and compressed vignettes that defy comparison. It's a new departure for Bob, though the mixture of complexity, simplicity, virtuosity and dramaturgy remain the same. It's a release that will reward repeated listening. Bob Drake (b.1957) has played a lot of instruments with -- and has engineered -- all manner of bands, from the early 1970's on. Between 1978-1989 he played an important role in Denver's underground music scene, and was a founding member of both Thinking Plague and Hail. In the early 1990s, when he was living in Los Angeles, he wound up engineering sessions with just about everybody from Ice Cube to Shirley MacLaine."

NURSE WITH WOUND Spiral Insana 2LP
Restocked; Double-LP version. 180-gram vinyl. Deluxe metallic silver gatefold sleeve. Limited numbered edition of 1000. Rotorelief inaugurates its Silver Collection with this deluxe expanded reissue of Nurse With Wound's 1986 masterpiece Spiral Insana. One of Nurse With Wound's most deep and mysterious recordings, Spiral Insana is more ambient and user-friendly than many other NWW outings, without losing any of its surreal edge. Stapleton and guests Robert Haigh and David Jackman mix prepared piano, percussion, loops, and various bric-à-brac into an hour-long collage of mashed-up sound, jarring juxtapositions, buzz-saw distortion, and even a pipe organ. If that sounds disorienting, that's because it is. This edition marks the definitive release of the complete Spiral Insana sessions, with the contents of the original 1986 LP augmented by three recordings from the same period: "Mourning Smile" (originally released on the 1987 LP Drunk With The Old Man Of The Mountains and later included on the 1997 United Dairies CD reissue of Spiral Insana), "Nihil" (first released on the 1997 Spiral Insana CD reissue), and "A Missing Sense," a 25-minute tribute to Robert Ashley's Automatic Writing originally released as the NWW half of a 1986 LP split with Organum. Steven Stapleton: drums, cello, radio, guitar, bowed piano, percussion, loops, voice, tuba, organ, electronics; Robert Haigh: guitar; David Jackman: banjo, splutter, voice; Chris Wallis: acoustic guitar; David Tibet: trumpet; Diana Rogerson: voice; Andrew McKenzie: voice. Mastered by Denis Blackham. Cover art and pictures by Babs Santini. "Still stands as one of the clear highlights of Stephen Stapleton's singularly daunting and mountainous discography. . . . Many of the varied interludes are noisy, fragmented, and somewhat abrasive, but there is always a playful sense of mischief lurking in the shadows, ready to blunder into the steadily darkening fever dream at any second. . . . a brilliantly skewed and excellent album that has not faded with age one bit." --Anthony D'Amico, Brainwashed

ZATUA Sin Existencia LP
Second Circle announce the latest release on the label comes from the Indonesian outfit Zatua with their debut release Sin Existencia. First formed by Dea Barandana, the seven-track album was recorded in Jakarta and Bali over two years and grew out of improvised live shows with a band Dea put together. Zatua first performed together in 2017 at the Goethe Institute in Jakarta as a last-minute addition to the bill, having only a week to prepare and rehearse. The live show would consist of material based on simple melodic ideas and extended sections growing into live jams. Taking material from Dea Barandana's solo compositions the ideas were then further developed and re-structured by Dea and band members Harsya Wahono, Adra Karim, and Rafi Muhammad into finished pieces. Inviting further guest musicians to join on various tracks, the vocals were in fact largely improvised by Carmen Caballero Fernández and Sasha Sabrina -- in French, Spanish, and Asturian. Using predominantly analog equipment, Sin Extistencia is the final outcome of an extensive exploration into the unique sonic ranges and musical fascinations of the various members of the band. Taking influence from Indonesian psychedelic music from the 1970s and '80s the album presents a fascinating glimpse into contemporary Indonesian electronic music with a nod to its little known but rich past.

PIO, GIUSTO Motore Immobile LP
Limited restock, last copies. Soave present the first vinyl reissue of Giusto Pio's Motore Immobile, originally released in 1979. One of the most striking documents of Italy's minimalist movement, Giusto Pio's Motore Immobile is a masterwork with few equivalents. Produced by Franco Battiato in 1979, at the outset of a long and fruitful period of collaboration between the two composers, and issued by the legendary Cramps Records, its triumphs were met by silence, before falling from view. Emerging on vinyl for the first time since its original pressing, Motore Immobile now sits within a reappraisal of a large neglected body of efforts made by the Italian avant-garde during the second half of the 1970s and early '80s. It is singular, but not alone. It resonates within a collective world of shimmering sound, one familiar to fans of Battiato, Lino Capra Vaccina, Luciano Cilio, Roberto Cacciapaglia, Francesco Messina, and Raul Lovisoni. An exercise in elegant restraint - note and resonance held to the most implicit need. Everything between root and embellishment has been stripped away. A sublime organ drone, against interventions of deceptively simple structural complexity - executed by piano, violin, and voice. A sonic sculpture reaching heights which few have touched. A thing of beauty and an album as perfect as they come. The reemergence of Motore Immobile heralds what is unquestionably one of the most important reissues of 2017.

VAZZ Cloud Over Maroma LP
Maroma was there long before the Moors. The Moors were there long before man landed on the moon half a century ago. Drum machines meant you didn't have to take Ginger Baker out for a drink. Life takes on sublime logic. In retrospect, everything takes on a new meaning from a different perspective. The past is the future. From Glasgow to Edinburgh to Andalucia. This music is about a small journey, an aural triptych of sounds."The Glasgow period was most definitively 1982-1987 and the Edinburgh period didn't really start again until around 2010. Two decades without creating music is a long time and it had been gnawing at me all along the yellow brick road I'd been travelling. With a new vigor and echoes of teenage angst I began again. I decided to call myself 'Reluctant Participant'. It was very apt. It was a love/hate relationship that reached deep into the soul. Delving down into dormant memories of places visited and the atmospheres created by them. Like the ice white shroud that lay over winter in Krakow's Jewish Quarter, Kazimierz. Photographs didn't do it justice. It needed a piano. The Edinburgh period on this LP is represented by the four piano pieces 'Embers', 'Kazimierz', 'Star Chamber' and 'Ritual', all recorded there between 2014-2016. They're part of a sequence of around fifty compositions from the same period some of which featured on the previous Vazz LP on STROOM and on the accompanying twenty track CD on Forced Nostalgia. It was a three-year purge recording this piano music. Emotionally intense and technically challenging. I'm glad it's over. It was the culmination of another chapter of music that remains frozen in time and place. It was time to move on again to pastures new. Constricted by the boundaries of a small island and the madness of Brexit I felt an urge to leave it all behind in 2017 in search of the exotic. The same urge that took fellow Scotsman Robert Louis Stevenson to look for his treasure island. He died in Samoa in 1894. I didn't feel the urge to go that far and Stevenson is quoted as saying 'wine is bottled poetry'. Yes, I agree, and the wine is cheap and very fine in Spain. Cheap poetry was what I needed. Bukowski told me to do it." Hugh Small, May 2019

CLINE, PATSY Sweet Dreams: The Complete Decca Masters 1960-1963 3LP
"Released for the first time on vinyl, Sweet Dreams: The Complete Decca Studio Masters (1960-1963) is an absolute must for any country music fan. This beautiful collection gathers all 51 tracks that Cline recorded with Owen Bradley after she left a restrictive deal at 4 Star Records and joined on with Decca Records in 1960. It's hard to believe that these songs were all recorded in such a small time frame; so many of her top hits and fan-favorites were all captured during this very fruitful period with Bradley at Decca. Right off the bat, the new sessions struck gold with the classic 'I Fall To Pieces,' Cline's first Country #1. Most notably, working with Bradley led Cline to find her signature, distinctive sound - braiding wistful country music ballads with big-band pop sensibilities that shone a spotlight on her elastic, smooth vocals, forging the path for future country-pop crossovers. With her sound in place, the duo doubled-down on their successes, with sessions that produced chart-toppers 'She's Got You,' 'Crazy' and 'Sweet Dreams (of You).' Featuring absolutely stunning, powerful, full-color photos printed on the interior of the gatefold 3xLP jacket, Sweet Dreams is as just as rewarding for the eyes as the ears. The songs on this 51-track collection form the crown jewels of her discography and cement Patsy Cline's legacy as one of country music's greatest of all time. BENSON, BRENDAN One Mississippi LP
"First ever vinyl pressing of Raconteurs co-leader Brendan Benson's debut album. Melodically crafted power pop that Brendan spent his early years writing, arranging and recording these gems, hunched over his Tascam 4-track in various bedrooms across Detroit and San Francisco. One Mississippi is the first time Brendan went in to a studio to record his very personal songs and present them to us with a full band. A lost masterpiece that gave us a taste of what we had to look forward to. Years before 'Detroit' was the first word on the lips of taste-fakers, hype-stokers, scene-stealers and fame-lords the world over, Brendan Benson's sheep-in-wolves' clothing debut album One Mississippi was the unassuming first shot fired from the city and players that would soon become feted beyond their wildest imagination. From the gallant album-opener 'Tea' (a song which particularly resonated with Japanese fans, of whom hundreds excitedly sent him fan mail containing tea bags) through the propulsive swell of 'Sittin' Pretty' and the undeniable 'hit' of 'Crosseyed' to the quirky 'Insects Rule' (which was jammed on live by Foo Fighters?!?!?)... Benson's craft is fully on display here. With half the songs here cowritten by the estimable Jason Falkner (Jellyfish, Beck), the end result is an unabashed pop album, accentuated by Brendan's brilliant turn of phrase and preternatural ear for a melody. The album also stands out as the first full-length project helmed by venerated super-producer Ethan Johns (Paul McCartney, Kings of Leon) with One Mississippi serving as a unifying point in the careers of Johns, Benson and Falkner that found them all mutually ascendant. Twenty-three years after its initial release, the Third Man Records reissue of One Mississippi is the FIRST-EVER vinyl pressing of this seminal album."

POP. 1280 Way Station CD
New York industrial punk band Pop. 1280 return with the album Way Station. The album's genesis took them back to when they were putting the finishing touches on their third LP, Paradise (Sacred Bones, 2016). Returning to New York, hungry to write new songs, the band decided to rethink their musical model. Their weekly band practice nights became sampling sessions, the exploration of new and disorienting sounds that they could adapt to their new confinement. The simplicity of the duo led to an aesthetic of minimalism, and they could figure out how to perform the songs live later. Now was about expunging their systems of the creative virus. The door began to creak open when Matthew Hord (Running) moved to New York in 2018 and the band discovered he knew more about analog synth hardware than anyone they'd worked with before in Pop.1280. Lyrically, Pop. 1280 plumbed the deepest depths of their inner selves and also allowed themselves to translate those painful and fearful themes to new extremes of purpose.
