BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE Methodrone 2LP
2021 repress. Released on 180 gram black vinyl. Deluxe gatefold with printed inner sleeves. 2007 release -- originally released in 1995. Redolent with the spirit of such high priests of effects and delay as Loop, Spaceman 3, and My Bloody Valentine, not to mention a fair dollop of the Jesus And Mary Chain, Methodrone clearly is the sum of its influences. Thankfully, BJM does a very solid job with them throughout the album's course of over 70 minutes.

PETER BROTZMANN GROUP Fuck De Boere (1968/70) CD
2021 restock. "Two concert recordings -- never before released, mastered from original radio master tapes-by larger groups led by the German saxophone legend Peter Brötzmann. Both recorded by the esteemed Hessischer Rundfunk organization at the Frankfurt Jazz Festival, in 1968 and 1970. Two of the most explosive, rivetting pieces of music ever to come out of the European vaults. First: an unheard alternate version of Brötzmann's groundbreaking Machine Gun, this time with a nine piece group (same as the LP, adding tenor saxophonist Gerd Dudek), recorded three months before the BRO/FMP record was made! A beautiful recording, revealing some heretofore obscure aspects of the composition, it's sure to be a favorite for free jazz fans of any stripe. Second: a 40-minute masterpiece from '70, with a large group featuring three tenors, three trombones, no bassist, Fred van Hove on organ (!), Derek Bailey on guitar and Han Bennink and Sven-Ake Johansson on drums. It's a monumental piece, featuring some of the most extreme Bailey on record (sounding at times like Masayumi Takayanaki from five years later), and tremendous interplay between Brötz, Evan Parker and Willem Breuker. Dedicated at the time to South African bassist Johnny Dyani, it's a moving poem on forces of oppression and the idea of resistance. This deluxe package includes a12-panel foldout booklet designed by Brötzmann, including very personal liner notes by him; two beautiful period photographs (the waft of late '60's freedom off these is utterly exhilarating and undeniable), and the cover photo sports a large Joseph Beuys-like sculpture Peter created during the same period."

SCHNITZLER, CONRAD Paracon (The Paragon Session Outtakes 1978-1979) CD
"Conrad Schnitzler is incredible. I would dearly have loved to meet him, to have been present when he, Seidel and Baumann were working their magic at Paragon Studio. Fortuitously, Wolfgang Seidel, co-author of these pieces, has opened up his archive of recordings to the Bureau B label. He and Conrad Schnitzler spent many years together experimenting with sound, capturing the results on the two Consequenz albums, amongst others. I had the honor of meeting Wolfgang Seidel at the Golden Pudel Club during the 2018 Eruption Festival. Ken Montgomery, who worked with Schnitzler in New York towards the end of the 1980s, was also there. The concerts and performances were hauntingly powerful, infused with the spirit of Schnitzler's music and utopian vision. These entirely instrumental recordings were created in the late 1970s at Peter Baumann's Paragon Studio. In my opinion, this stellar period gave rise to the finest works: the Con (BB 350CD/LP), Consequenz (BB 121CD/LP), and Con 3 (BB 122CD/LP) albums, featuring such wonderful pieces as "Fata Morgana", "Coca", and "Auf dem schwarzen Kanal". These recently discovered pieces take the aforementioned albums a stage further. Sounds complement each other as they are reprised, whilst continuing to exist in their own cosmos. As you listen, you feel as if you have been transported back into the studio itself while the sessions are happening. One surprise follows another -- the third track sounds like clocks ringing at a pitch which only a bat could really hear. Numbers '5' and '6' are not so far removed from abstract techno tracks by Jeff Mills, albeit with rather more swing, floating in upper tone sequences reminiscent of the American composer Conlon Nancarrow. Nr. '8' is an absolute dream/wave piece, sounding like a relation of the (then) emerging Throbbing Gristle project. The tenth piece is my personal favorite, evoking a wave-romantic atmosphere which might lead you to believe that Conrad Schnitzler had been listening to The Cure. Schnitzler is electronica in its purest sense. He succeeds in rendering the unconscious audible. This goes far beyond 'music to listen to', it is music which works on different levels, music to move you." --Richard von der Schulenburg

GRUPPO DI IMPROVVISAZIONE NUOVA CONSONANZA Eroina (Clear Vinyl) LP
Limited repress; LP version. Clear vinyl. Cometa Edizioni present a reissue of Gruppo Di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza's Eroina, originally released in 2011. There are still so many treasures to be discovered out there, but once you find a gem like this you can definitely put the research on hold for a little while and give it a deep listen. Recorded at Fono Roma in 1971, Eroina is a series of haunting improvisations -- each one inspired by the effects of a different drug -- made of whirling electronic glitches, skronky horns, pounded piano, funky drums. and weird tape experiments delivering the best drone/spaced/drugged-out free jazz performed by the legendary ensemble of Ennio Morricone, Mario Bertoncini, Egisto Macchi, Battisti D'Amario, Franco Evangelisti, and Walter Bianchi. KMRU Peel 2LP
2021 repress. KMRU is the moniker of Joseph Kamaru, a sound artist and producer based in Nairobi. One of the leading exponents of the burgeoning experimental music scene in Nairobi and beyond, he was listed by Resident Advisor as one of "15 East African Artists You Need To Hear" in 2018 and is a regular performer at the fabled Nyege Nyege Festival having also presented live performances at CTM festival and Gamma Festival. Peel is KMRU's first release for Editions Mego. An exquisite mix of field recordings and electronics unravelling at a repetitive and leisurely pace to expose a rich tapestry of sound, revered for its ability to cross borders with the sheer undertow of emotional content. The subtle calming atmosphere within Peel belies the compositional prowess as layers of delicate sounds wrap around each other creating a hybrid new form ambient music both captivating through its textural depth and kaleidoscopic patterns. The track titles lend themselves to the themes and mood set within: "Why Are You Here", "Well", "Solace", "Klang", "Insubstantial", and the title track. This is a deep heartfelt journey with a new strong voice being expressed through the means of organically presented electronic ambient sounds, one which reveals further layers on repeat listens. All tracks written and produced by KMRU. Recorded and produced in Rimpa, (Nairobi, KE). Mastered by Stephan Mathieu at Schwebung Mastering, June 2020. ITADI Itadi CD
Reduced price, last copies. Hot Casa presents a tremendous Afro-soul album recorded in Togo in 1977 by Itadi Bonney. This rare album was created by a four-piece band formed and led by Itadi. Recorded live in Ghana at the radio station and remixed in Togo, this album is a really stunning fusion of funky arrangements, jazz inspirations and typical Togolese rhythms, sung in English, Mina, and Akposo. The message was political, calling for African unity against dictatorship, which obliged Itadi to move to Washington DC during the '70s. Itadi Bonney, a native of Togo, West Africa, is an international musician who is a composer, arranger, vocalist, and guitarist. Itadi's music is a blend of Ghana's highlife and soul, creating a sparkling, undulating and eminently danceable wave of melodies and rhythms, punctuated by funky keys and layered with smooth vocals and harmonies. Itadi has toured France, Ghana, Benin, The Ivory Coast, Nigeria, and the U.S. Officially licensed and includes an interview with the artist.

SETENTA Latin Piece of Soul CD
Reduced price, last copies. Created in 2006, Setenta consists of seven musicians from Paris. Using their musical tastes and backgrounds, Setenta produce a unique mix of Latin, soul and boogaloo, with a touch of Caribbean influences. After a sparkling debut on the Latin scene with their first album Funky Tumbao (2010), they performed live for two years on an impressive and exhilarating world tour, and now Setenta is proud to present this hot album of Latin soul. Sung in Spanish, English and also in Creole and Yoruba, Setenta writes songs with lyrics about various universal themes, including "love, peace and unity." All 14 tracks on this new album were recorded at Mato studio in Paris, on analog equipment with rare vintage instruments. Influenced by Nuyorican maestros of the '70s, the band was also keen to create their own futuristic Latin-soul sound. The album also contains two covers that reflect the eclecticism of the band. First they decided to take on the hip-hop classic Busta Rhymes' "Woo Hah!! Got You All In Check "with a funky mambo version. Then Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is revisited with a massive boogaloo touch, ready to hit radios and dancefloors all over the world. With this pulsating and rhythmic album, Setenta gives us a modern definition somewhere between salsa and funk -- a future Latin-soul masterpiece, already.

BELFER WITH WILL YORK, MICHAEL When Can I Fly?: The Sleepers, Tuxedomoon & Beyond Book
"Just when you thought you knew all there was to know about '70s San Francisco underground music, here we have Michael Belfer -- one of the SF scene's earliest progenitors, who straddled two very different worlds playing guitar in two of the Bay Area's most creative musical groups, The Sleepers and Tuxedomoon. By far two of the most unique bands in the early San Francisco musical landscape. When Can I Fly? is a harrowing memoir filled with stories encapsulating the seedy side of the San Francisco punk and post-punk scene in great detail, from the opening of the Mabuhay to the closing of the Savoy Tivoli and every back alley overdose in between. Tracing the earliest roots of The Sleepers in Palo Alto in 1975-76, Belfer was privy to witnessing the nascent SF punk scene development as his bandmate Ricky Williams (aka Ricky Tractor) was already playing drums in the first lineup of CRIME at the time. This memoir offers a glimpse into the inner workings of the complications of street-level avant-garde musicianship, as well as the drug empire that was fueling the fires within the movers & shakers of the late 1970s in seething detail, and on a few occasions with grotesque precision. What do Herb Alpert, 'Joe Boxer' briefs, Will Shatter's secret salsa ingredient, Celestial Seasonings tea, and HEROIN all have in common? They all somehow intersect with Michael Belfer amongst the pages in When Can I Fly? -- and man, what a ride! As Belfer's recollections cover his unusual position of drifting between two well-known working bands, both orbiting around the shadier side of underground musical expression in the uncharted waters of the late 1970s, what's apparent in hindsight is how both seem so conceptually disconnected from the rank & file punk bands they played alongside at the time. Combining this lurid scene of drug-soaked denigration with the most mind-bending experimental sounds of the Bay Area during the era, When Can I Fly? portrays the side of the SF punk story lost in the shadows of addiction and compulsion, and almost even breaches into Breaking Bad territory at some points. Fortunately, When Can I Fly? has been blessed with a plethora of incredible and previously unseen photography from the Richard Peterson archive (Search & Destroy magazine) covering Belfer's intertwining tenures in both The Sleepers and Tuxedomoon, as well as a wealth of rare flyers and photos by James Stark, Ruby Ray, and Sue Brisk. And with a Foreword by none other than Jon Savage as well as an Afterword by Hunt Sales (Iggy Pop, David Bowie, Todd Rundgren, and son of Soupy!), this is yet another sickening volume of underworld legend you shouldn't miss." First edition of 400. 225 pages.

RADIGUE, ELIANE Triptych CD
2020 repress. Originally released in 2009. "Back to music after three years of silence... On the suggestion of Robert Ashley, Douglas Dunn commissioned this piece from Éliane Radigue for choreography. Only the first part of Triptych was staged at the premiere at the Dancehall/Theatre of Nancy on February 27 1978. Recorded in the composer's studio in Paris. After the premiere of Adnos I (IMPREC 028CD) in San Francisco in 1974, a group of French students introduced Éliane Radigue to Tibetan Buddhism. When she returned to Paris, she began to explore this spirituality in depth, which slowed her musical production up until 1978. Triptych marks her return to composition, and draws its inspiration from 'the spirit of the fundamental elements,' water, air, fire, earth... Éliane Radigue likes to add that this has often been useful to her in her moments of research and transitions. This three-part composition, with its great humility and contemplative simplicity, heralded a new period of work and was the first in a series of masterpieces inspired by Tibetan Buddhism: Adnos II (1980); Adnos III (1981) [both included on IMPREC 028CD]; Songs of Milarepa (1983), with the voices of Lama Kunga Rinpoche and Robert Ashley; Jetsun Mila (1986); as well as the Triologie de la Mort (XI 119CD): Kyema (1988), Kailasha (1991), and Koumé (1993). Archival images included in the accompanying booklet." --Manu Holterbach

RESIDENTS, THE Beautiful Eyes CD
"The Residents are an American art collective best known for their over 60 studio albums that were recorded over a period of over forty years. They also created some outstanding multimedia works, mainly three CD ROM projects and ten DVDs. Working as an anonymous collective, their identities were kept secret until in 2017 Hardy Fox revealed himself as their primary composer. Hardy died in October 2018, but the group continue to record and perform. Recently, several new albums have been released, among them the brilliant Intruders and Ghost of Hope. Early in 2020, the group was invited to perform their seminal album God in 3 Persons at the MOMA in New York. Beautiful Eyes was a compilation album that was released on July 16th 2010 via the Robot Selling Device. The album is focused on 'beautiful but cold' pieces of music from throughout the group's history. It includes pieces of music unavailable elsewhere like 'Available Piece' which is an extended instrumental segment from the group's 1978 album Not Available which has not been released elsewhere (even being excluded from the 2019 pREServed reissue of the album). Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You hear that all the time. When the eyes you are talking about are those of The Residents it means something different. In this case the eyeball masks long used by the group were always a mysterious factor. The Residents' sense of beauty was one of distance, even a calculated distance. And so it is with this music which is beautiful but cold, you can listen but not possess. This is a great late-night listen. There are a number of unusual items in this collection, including a binaural experiment that must be experienced with headphones."

SKINSHAPE Filoxiny LP

The sound has roots in many genres but in particular 1960s-70s funk, soul, reggae, psychedelic rock, Afrobeat, and folk. Skinshape grew out of a love for old music and the way it sounded. Initially, Dorey experimented with samples (especially drum breaks) to create instrumental hip-hop/trip-hop tracks but then later started to play around with tape machines as a means to create his own 'samples'. This process gave birth to Skinshape with all elements being recorded by Dorey since the first self-titled album released in 2014. He released his second album Oracolo in 2015 followed by Life & Love in 2017. Aside from the Skinshape project, Dorey was bassist for the band Palace from 2014-2017 and runs a reggae label called Horus Records based in North London."

LEMAIRE, CHRISTOPHE Can't You Hear Me? 2LP
2021 restock; Double LP version. Download card included. "Globetrotter of parallel subcontinents and digger of rare, forgotten records, Eothen 'Egon' Alapatt tracks sounds from the dawn of time to the four corners of the world. On the other side of the globe, French designer Christophe Lemaire stays forward thinking and audacious in his choices: far from our deified present, he cultivates a love of timeless designs and mixed influences; a passion for iconoclastic music hidden in the dark corners of a global cultural industry. This extraordinary openness has been at the heart of their friendship since 2007. This second anthology celebrates their impressionist vision and explores garage rock from the 1970s, voicing the struggles of independence in Zambia, Nigeria and Zimbabwe. Can't You Hear Me comes from a track by charismatic Zamrock icon Paul Ngozi, a Lemaire favorite. Ngozi's title track sets the tone for a drastic selection of seventeen songs with rebellious undertones, riddled by an infectious groove, the forsaken writing about a forgotten chapter in the history of music. Ngozi, WITCH, Chrissy Zebby Tembo, Amanaz, Wells Fargo, Eye Q and the Funkees represent a generation fighting for their freedom, armed with fuzz guitars, symbolic objects of a new movement. They played in Fela's kingly shadow, were influenced by Hendrix's psychedelic solos, Jefferson Airplane's penetrating chords and Cream's repetitive melodies. The music of their colonial oppressors they reassembled and reinterpreted with pure energy, without nod to hymn or flag. A halo of cosmic design and pure lines, the cover for the anthology by Sanghon Kim transports us in this whirling odyssey in space and time while composer/producer Pilooski concludes the album with an edit of Witch's 'No Time,' an expression of the critical need to open up to new perspectives, new imaginations and to keep unearthing riches of our universal heritage. 'Through these tracks we can feel the communicative energy, this pure vitality, not only of Africa , but of youth and hope,' Lemaire states. 'And I find it quite universal and timeless. It is not about music as an industry, or as product, but music as a craft. And one can immediately recognized when music is created with heart and soul.'"

The release has been fetishized and demonized, lauded and misunderstood for nearly four decades. In this definitive reissue of the album, the German Oak trio -- together again after 30 years apart -- have approved the remastering of their 70s music; finally tell the story behind the creation of their dark, brooding album -- and the occult-obsessed record collector behind the original album's release and its myth -- and they share previously unreleased music and photos. This two LP set presents the album as it was initially released, and a second disc of other songs by the band, both rare and previously unreleased."

ONENESS OF JUJU Chapter Two: Nia LP
2021 repress. "Essential spiritual jazz originally issued on the lauded Strata-East label. Magical, mystical, Afrocentric, progressive -- words that could be used to describe any number of musical compositions by Sun Ra or his cosmic brothers and sisters, from John to Alice Coltrane, early '70s projects on record labels like Detroit's Tribe or Houston's Lightin' or the interests of one Washington, DC native named Jimmy Gray that centered under one, perfect moniker: Black Fire. Gray spent nearly three decades pushing boundaries as a Black American promoter, distributor and, finally, record label owner. Together with Oneness of Juju's leader James 'Plunky Nkabinde' Branch, Gray oversaw sixteen releases on Black Fire Records between 1975 and 1996. These are the definitive reissues of five of the label's key titles; all were lacquered -- most directly from master tape - by legendary Los Angeles mastering engineer Bernie Grundman, With this set, Oneness Of Juju and Black Fire's story burns forth into its fifth decade, its message not tempered, its sound pure. It's cycle, once again, complete. Each release is packaged in a thick, tip-on sleeve and includes a deluxe booklet with extensive notes on the album, the Black Fire collective, and the musical and cultural revolution they created."

MOHOLO OCTET, LOUIS Spirits Rejoice! LP
2021 repress. Otoroku present the first vinyl reissue of Louis Moholo Octet's Spirits Rejoice!, originally released in 1978 on Ogun Recordings. One of the most legendary free jazz records ever produced, Spirits Rejoice! is a high achievement in the movement of the era as it soars beyond oppression with a raucous and spiritually uplifting surge of movement and melody. Featuring Harry Miller, Johnny Dyani, Keith Tippett, Evan Parker, Nick Evans, Radu Malfatti, and Kenny Wheeler, this is former Blue Note artist Louis Moholo's first album under his own name and is a classic example of the cross-pollination between South African and British players. Mongezi Feza's 'You Ain't Gonna Know Me 'Cos You Think You Know Me" alone is enough to make your life a better place. Made with permission and in association with Ogun Recordings. Features an exact reproduction of the original artwork and liner notes, along with new liner notes from Matthew Wright. Remastered by Giuseppe IIelasi. High gloss sleeve. From Matthew Wright's new liner notes: "The South African melodies, now so familiar, were wholeheartedly taken on board by the individual musicians, their unity of purpose mirroring the belief in the strength of the collective. Stunning solos, often close to the edge, feature throughout -- Evan Parker and Keith Tippett on 'Shine Wherever You Are'; the contrasting trombone styles of Nick Evans and Radu Malfatti on 'You Ain't Gonna Know Me...'; the octet sounding like a full big band; and behind them, the relentlessly rhythmic urgency of the piano, bass and drums. Add to this Kenny Wheeler's moving and all-encompassing trumpet on the elegiac 'Amaxesha Osizi' and the joyous flamboyancy of 'Wedding Hymn' with Parker's relatively straight-ahead tenor and Tippett's dextrous piano solo over a bed of riffing horns, (fast) walking bass lines and a supreme sense of swing. Louis' early hero, Big Sid Catlett, would have loved it!"

BUG, STEVE Never Ending Winding Roads 2LP
The electronic musician and Poker Flat founder's contemplative new studio album takes in minimal house music, moody techno and effervescent breaks across 11 unique tracks. His previous LP Paradise Sold (PFR 037LP) alongside Langenberg was released in 2018 to critical acclaim. Never Ending Winding Roads is an entirely solo release however, with much of it produced during the months of enforced isolation due to the coronavirus pandemic. Many of the track titles reflect Steve's headspace during this time, with themes of solitude, contemplation and reflection brought to the fore perhaps more than with any of his previous work. Steve's formative musical years were spent during Germany's techno and acid-house heyday, with his love for a perfect groove as apparent now as it was back then. His DJ skills and a keen, innovative ear led him not down the typical path of the early nineties trance and harder dance scene, but instead towards a fresher, hybrid sound --merging stripped deep house, tweaked out acid and more minimal forms of techno and electronic music: a strand of music he fiercely champions to this day. With 11 brand new tracks, Never Ending Winding Roads is a meticulously produced and deeply engaging electronic album; one that explores various shades of house, techno and broken beat with Steve's celebrated attention to detail and consummate originality. Album opener "Lucid Loops" perfectly sets the tone, immediately ensnaring you with a hypnotic, undulating synth line and a faintly menacing undertone thanks to hushed, discordant strings and unnerving vocal stabs. This atmosphere of quiet paranoia permeates many of the tracks on Never Ending Winding Roads, most explicitly in the sinewy groove and sketchy, panic-inducing synth line of "Locked Away In My Head". This album more than perhaps any other in his career sees Steve experimenting with broken-beats, to incredible effect. Tracks like "A Conscious Machine" and "Electro Harmonix" are melodic, emotionally-rich cuts: burst of radiant optimism that juxtapose beautifully with the album's darker moments. Elsewhere tracks like "Yellow Snake" find Steve exploring deep, dubby territory, while album closer "Upon Mountains" is a cosmic, arpeggiated masterpiece: an 8-bit computer game soundtrack reimagined as a poignant electro ballad. QUADRATSCHULZ Pudel Produkte 33 12"
Pudel Produkte 33 is like a time machine back to homely MFOC ages when Rephlex's very own IG-88 used to be a resident at this very Hamburg club and MFOC-promoter Raf jokingly insulted Richard D. James (with the Aphex Twin standing right behind him, mind you). Blessed times indeed, which quadratschulz perfectly emulates with his exquisitely constructed aural body made of brain-dancing, melancholodies and thrilling electro boogie. Ralf & Florian meet AFX in an elevator and do have some stories to share. An EP so good you are asking yourself if the upcoming remix EP can top that (hint: it can). Meanwhile, the dancefloor dictator issues a strict buying order.

RANDSTAD These Serpents 12"
Randstad is the production and DJ moniker of Dutch multimedia artist Thomas van Linge, co-founder of the record labels BAKK and Rubber and freshly relocated to Berlin. After first hearing his rhythmic drum workout on "Metalloid", his contribution for 2020's Still Life compilation, Veyl glad to have tapped his second EP These Serpents for Veyl. Randstad is pushing his idea across the spectrum of industrialized beat music for this outright roaring six-tracker ideal to tear down clubs when they finally re-open in 2036.

COHEN-SOLAL, ROBERT Les Shadoks LP + 7"
2021 restock; LP version. Comes as a limited edition 12" + 7" vinyl album; High glossy gatefold; Includes an exclusive Shadok drawing by Robert Cohen-Solal. WRWTFWW Records announce the release of the complete soundtrack of cult French animated TV series Les Shadoks (1968-1974) by Robert Cohen-Solal, available for the first time ever in its entirety. It's the right in time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Jacques Rouxel and René Borg's legendary television cartoon. Electro-acoustic pioneer and eminent member of the illustrious GRM (Groupe de recherches musicales, the French equivalent of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop), Robert Cohen-Solal has explored music and sound alongside luminaries such as Bernard Parmegiani, Pierre Henry, Luc Ferrari, and Iannis Xenakis, and is responsible for numerous projects in the field of applied music, soundtracks (documentaries, shorts etc.), and experimental recordings. His work on Les Shadoks is simply extraordinary -- a fascinating and bizarre collage of wacky electro pop (à la Jean-Jacques Perrey), drones, musique concrète, classical, and dadaist sound experiments seamlessly mixed into a cohesive and cinematic listening experience. The ideal soundtrack for what will remain one of the weirdest animated TV series ever created. A true literary, cultural, and philosophical phenomenon in France, Les Shadoks caused a sensation while airing between 1968 and 1974. Its unique combination of Alfred Jarry-style surrealism, off-centered British humor, and US comic strip inspiration, all brought to life by illustrated bird-like creatures (reminiscent of Paul Klee's La machine à gazouiller, or Twittering Machine), left a lasting mark, making the term "Shadok" an oft-used satirical expression to describe policies and attitudes considered to be absurd.
