BEBEY, FRANCIS African Electronic Music 1975-1982 CD
2021 repress. Cameroonian musician Francis Bebey is truly one of a kind. He entered the music scene with his African compositions for classical guitar. He gave recitals while pursuing a career in journalism and then as an international civil servant. The same creative impulse also led him to write pop songs, some of which (based on novels he had written) became big hits in Africa and in the French-speaking world. But few people know that in the '70s, Francis Bebey delved into electronic music. The first electronic keyboards, organs and drum machines offered him new possibilities of totally controlling his compositions. He embraced the technique of "sound on sound" recording (recording several tracks, sequentially juxtaposed on the same tape). This new stage in his musical career included the production of several records (Savannah Georgia, New Track, Haiti), rarities both for their creative explorations as well as their manifestations on vinyl. This was a particularly rich period for him, as he tested the limitless possibilities of the medium, and made use of surprising and novel instruments. Incredible sounds -- in the literal sense of the word -- would soon appear on the planet Bebey. CD housed in a digisleeve with a 8-page booklet.

PABLO, AUGUSTUS King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown LP
2021 repress; reissue of the 1976 historic collaboration between producer instrumentalist Augustus Pablo and dub engineer King Tubby."If you had to pick one album that best represents the pinnacle of the art of dub, you'd cull the candidates down pretty quickly to ten or 12, and it would get very difficult after that. Few would fault you for ending up with this one, though, which stands as perhaps the finest collaboration between two of instrumental reggae's leading lights: producer and melodica player Augustus Pablo and legendary dub pioneer King Tubby. Among other gems, this album offers its title track -- a dub version of Jacob Miller's 'Baby I Love You So'-- which is widely regarded as the finest example of dub ever recorded. But the rest of the album is hardly less impressive. 'Each One Dub', another cut on a Jacob Miller rhythm, possesses the same dark and mystical ambience, if not quite the same emotional energy, as 'King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown,' and the version of the epochal 'Satta Massaganna' that closes the album is another solid winner. Pablo's trademark 'Far East' sound (characterized by minor keys and prominent melodica lines) is predominant throughout, and is treated with care and grace by King Tubby, who has rarely sounded more inspired in his studio manipulations than he does here. Absolutely essential." --Rick Anderson, All Music

CHASE, CLAIRE Density 2036 4CD
In 2013, Claire Chase instigated a project designed to cultivate an entirely new body of work for flute. A MacArthur Fellow, Harvard professor, and indomitable musical force who cofounded the International Contemporary Ensemble, Chase began commissioning work, with the idea of doing so until the centennial of Edgard Varèse's seminal flute solo "Density 21.5," in 2036. This deluxe four-CD set is the first fruit of these commissions, realized in the first three years of the project, featuring 18 works by 16 composers, including the multi-part album-long composition "Pan" by Brazilian-born Marcos Balter. Composers wrote for all members of Chase's flute family, from piccolo to "Big Bertha" (her contrabass flute), as well as electronics, voice, and a handful of other instruments. Tyshawn Sorey performed percussion on his contribution and Suzanne Farrin played Ondes Martenot on hers; Roomful of Teeth collaborate with Chase on one piece, and sound designer Levy Lorenzo handles electronics throughout. Participants come from a wide range of creative contemporary music circles; they include Richard Beaudoin, Nathan Davis, Jason Eckardt, Dai Fujikura, Vijay Iyer, Felipe Lara, Mario Diaz de Leon, George Lewis, Pauline Oliveros, Pauchi Sasaki, Francesca Verunelli, and Du Yun, as well as the historical work by Varèse. The exquisitely detailed recordings of Density 2036 were made at the Meyer Sound Laboratories in Berkeley and session-produced by Matias Tarnopolsky over the course of four years, with no overdubbing or corrections, presenting Chase's incredible musicality in all its glory. This monumental program comes packaged as two double-CDs, sporting cover art by German artist Jorinde Voigt (with whom Chase has collaborated) and liner note essays by Suzannah Clark, John Corbett, Jennifer Judge, and Steven Schick.

"Originally released in 1978, the title Mean & Dirty describes this album to a T. Let this record play with any '70s cop drama, spy-thriller, or blaxploitation film and it will act flawlessly as the soundtrack. Dramatic funk rock dominates this album ('Moving Target', 'Flying Squad', 'Arrival Time'), but room is left open for the mellower pieces ('Slow Fuse', 'Blue Mood', 'Night Moves'), the super-fast ('Dragster'), and the surprisingly jaunty ('On Yer Bike', 'Guv'). Founded in 1909, de Wolfe Music's legendary production music catalog has gained cult status among vinyl collectors and crate diggers worldwide. Featuring music from a roster of composers including Reg Tilsley, Roger Webb and duo Frank McDonald & Chris Rae, it also includes performances from iconic musicians such as Jimmy Page and Herbie Flowers. De Wolfe Music has provided the soundtrack to countless feature films including Monty Python and The Holy Grail, The Witchfinder General, Dawn Of The Dead, and more than twenty of the Shaw Brothers' kung fu classics. Major recording artists who've sampled the collection in recent years include Beyonce, Drake, Jay Z, Lily Allen, Gorillaz, K. Michelle, Jay Electronica, Cam'ron and Ja Rule, to name just a few."

BERNSTEIN, MICHAEL R. Slower Learn Cassette
"Feeding Tube is excited to announce the first new release in a good long while by Michael R. Bernstein, one of the central figures in the sub-underground scene of the late '90s onward. Back when he was still based in NYC, Bernstein played and recorded extensively with Double Leopards and Religious Knives, and also ran the important Heavy Tapes imprint. After that he relocated to the DC area, eventually opening the excellent HR Records (one greater DC's best stores). Sometime in the last year, Mike decided to start making some music and passed along a few files. This cassette, subtitled Meditations and Realizations for Five Voice, is a documentation of these new experiments. The structures of the five pieces are quite different, but they're all assembled in similar ways, using sequencers to create overlaid patterns of notes, riffing on the discoveries of the first generation of 'minimalist' (so-called) composers. In the course of my audio travels, I hear the work of many artists who are trying to create their own unique response to the music of Reich, Young et al., but Bernstein really fucking nails it. The subtleties of his temporal and melodic shifts are amazing and hypnotic. His attention to the pace at which these changes happen is also indicative of a different level of rhythmic sophistication than is displayed by most of his contemporaries. Slower Learn is a lesson in how much potential this sort of material still harbors. Nice to have you back, Bernstein!" --Byron Coley, 2021.

2021 restock; LP version. For their 50th release, Finders Keepers Record's label heads Andy Votel, Dom Thomas and Doug Shipton return to their first release L'Enfant Assassin Des Mouches by Jean-Claude Vannier released by Finders Keepers in 2005 (BMS 001CD/ FKR 001X-LP), with a long overdue return to Jean-Claude Vannier's vaults! Electro Rapide is a collection of rare and unreleased archive material from the studio archives of legendary French orchestral pop composer Jean-Claude Vannier. Taken from the period before and during his revered creative relationship with Serge Gainsbourg (reaching their halcyon with 1971's Histoire De Melody Nelson) these tracks reveal a rare glimpse of Vannier's self-initiated instrumental projects that were crowbarred between an airtight studio diary as one of France's most in demand arrangers and composers of the post Mai-68 generation. Alongside a handful of his contemporaries and collaborators such as Michel Colombier, Serge Gainsbourg, François de Roubaix, Brigitte Fontaine, Claude Nougaro and Gerard Manset, composer and orchestral arranger Jean-Claude Vannier is globally recognized as one of the key exponents of the Gallic pop cognoscenti to make the significant change from '60s yé-yé to the brooding conceptual pop which defined the following decade. His own masterworks, Histoire De Melody Nelson and L'Enfant Assassin Des Mouches (both of which benefited from the poetic prose of Serge Gainsbourg), are two such productions that continue to inspire and challenge popular music as long as five decades since they were first released to moderate audiences in the early 1970s. Electro Rapide is a collection of similarly underexposed instrumental works that combine a mixture of Jean-Claude Vannier's familiar trademark motifs and stylings from his coveted work for idiosyncratic French pop vocalists (such as Fontaine, Nougaro, Leonie and Anna St. Clair) with the seldom heard experimental music for ballets, fashion shows as well as his infamous film music (such as the soundtracks for Cannabis (1970) and La Horse (1970)).

2021 repress. "Busta Rhymes delivered his debut album, The Coming, three years after the Leaders of the New School unofficially disbanded. Though his talents were evident on those Leaders of the New School releases, Busta went on a series of features that only built up the public's desire for a solo Busta album. Right out the gate Busta dropped his classic debut single 'Woo Hah!!' that made it abundantly clear he was to be mentioned among Hip Hop's greatest solo artists. The energy and originality packed on that one song set a tone for the album that displays Busta's raw talent and ability to bend words with his ever rambunctious flow. Songs such as 'Everything Remains Raw', 'Abandon Ship', and 'Still Shining' all rise above as The Coming's stand out tracks but it's really 'Ill Vibe' that is the albums crown jewel moment. Busta sounds right at home over this J Dilla beat trading verses with his Native Tongue cohort Q-Tip."

HIEROGLYPHICS Hiero Oldies Volume One LP
"For the first time officially on wax, the Hiero Oldies is a collection of early works from the Hieroglyphics crew featuring Del The Funkyhomosapien, Casual, Pep Love, and Souls of Mischief. This also marks the first official vinyl release of the timeless tune 'Step To My Girl'. The Oakland-based Hieroglyphics are a long-running, influential underground rap collective who combine an offbeat sensibility with a strong grounding in battle rhyming, freestyling, and other hip-hop traditions. Thanks to a significant online presence and constant touring, Hiero gained a healthy following among rap fans seeking an alternative to the increasingly commercialized state of the genre."

Originally initiated for the Merzbow, Kelly Moran, Prurient USA tour (representing three generations of heavy electronics), this archival recording is finally released as Chain Reaction At Dusk. Moran and Prurient first met in 2018 in support of electronic music luminary Oneohtrix Point Never at his legendary debut of Myriad at the Park Avenue Armory. The two bonded over an unlikely composite of piano, drone and noise synthesis (Moran from John Cage, while early Prurient tapes cut-up Erik Satie). A leader in the realm of prepared piano, Kelly Moran quickly drew attention for her massive and seamlessly complex juxtapositions of plucked icy melodic sequences and deep sub bass compositions, culminating in a stunning 2018 LP, Ultraviolet for Warp Records. With three tracks of continuous intertwining melodic tension, Moran continues her juxtaposition of crystalline single note attacks upon a bed of massive low-end prepared drones. Shattering genre, Moran culls from a broad palate of classical, post-minimalism, ambient and other forms to free the piano from convention pushing high and low frequencies through electronic pairing and coupling. Recorded at her home in fall 2018, Moran's split side showcases the composer's prepared piano treated with delays and granular synthesis over a heavy wash of droning, arpeggiating synthesizers. Similarly, Prurient returns with a side parallax-view vocal barrage complimentary to Moran's fractal modes. Composed at Guy Brewer's (Shifted) former Berlin studio, Fernow accessed a cache of pristine analog synthesizers and sequencers while finishing the process with Kris Lapke in New York with layers of crude telephone dictation manipulation, resulting in surrealist vocal cut-ups -- and "exquisite corpse" static. Kelly Moran speaks of her music and as movement on the psychedelic path and the interior, while Prurient's noise derives nearly exclusively from dissociative and nightmarish imaginations. This is the meeting of psychedelia and anxiety disorder, but the opposing morphosis is ultimately one creation of "classical doom electronics".

SHAW QUINTET, WOODY At Onkel PO's Carnegie Hall Hamburg 1982 2LP
2021 restock; double LP version. Includes bonus track "Diane". Recorded January 13, 1982 at Onkel Pö's Carnegie Hall, Hamburg, Germany; Recorded by NDR Hamburg. Personnel: Woody Shaw - trumpet. flugelhorn; Steve Turre - trombone; Mulgrew Miller - piano; Stafford James - bass; Tony Reedus - drums. Double-LP version includes bonus track "Diane"."It is a positive sensation and pure joy to be reminded of an extraordinary and very special musician by this current release -- as Woody Shaw disappeared from the personal jazz-universe of way too many people after his early and tragic death in May 1989. Unjustly of course -- Shaw represents a position in the recent history of the jazz trumpet, which hardly ever before nor after was painted so clearly, so precisely and with so much energy: as the quivering and delicate virtuosity of a coeval, who has absorbed virtually all earlier traditions -- modernity and awareness for history as the spirit of jazz. Furthermore, Woody Shaw was at the zenith of his personal development as an artist at the time of the performance at Onkel Pö's Carnegie Hall on 13 January 1982; just imagine what he might have achieved had he lived longer than for just seven more years... He was accompanied by a sensational group of musicians. All of them subsequently made news as artists in their own right: the drummer Tony Reedus as well as the bassist Stafford James, the pianist Mulgrew Miller and especially the young trombonist Steve Turre, who alongside Lester Bowie became the new young voice of the jazz-trombone shortly afterwards and who gave orientation to a whole generation. Band leader Woody might have guessed it, when he (unlike many other band leaders in this CD series Live aus dem Onkel Pö) introduced the members of his band right after the opening song: modest, friendly and appealing as always. Woody Shaw was a true master of his trade; People like him are missed in this business, which is usually characterised by hubris, not the spirit of humanity. . . . His music -- as documented here in this recording of a very intensive concert, as they could be experienced at Onkel Pö, besides the passion-driven, delirious performances by entertainers such as Dizzy Gillespie or blues-fireworks by the likes of Albert Collins -- is a huge and important heritage of contemporary jazz. This heritage is now enriched by another sparkling facet. Those who listen, will learn to inherit." --Michael Laages

2021 repress. Twenty-one fully restored tracks from Kourosh's original master tapes Subtitled: Pre-Revolution Psychedelic Rock From Iran: 1973-1979. "The only legitimately licensed collection of the godfather of Iranian psychedelic rock, Kourosh Yaghmaei. Known within the Iranian diaspora simply by his first name, Kourosh's recordings were thought lost after Islamic fundamentalists took control of Iran. They weren't: Kourosh had protected them -- along with key ephemera from the '70s. Their collection here bolstered by Kourosh's first person recollections of Iran's '70s rock scene and its death after the Revolution, tells the story of an immensely talented artist's desire to persevere in the face of terrible adversity. Kourosh Yaghmaei and his brothers Kamran and Kambiz were amongst the few inspired Iranian musicians determined to change Tehran's musical landscape in the late '60s and early '70s. The trio, armed with rented, second-hand instruments and records by The Ventures, The Kinks, The Doors, merged Western garage rock, psychedelia and Iranian folkloric music to create a sound unlike anything that came before them." "In November 2001, Sub Rosa published Henri Pousseur's 8 Parabolic Studies in a box of 4 CDs -- these electronic pieces have been created in 1972 at the WDR studios in Cologne. The idea was to ask other musicians, of different generations, to attempt a new mix on the basis of these eight studies. The first mix (and not re-mix) was a re-interpretation by Henri Pousseur himself -- this laid the foundation stone of the edifice. Contrary to the mixes carried out thirty years ago, these were made digitally. The second mix was Robert Hampson's (aka Main) -- quite nervous of the master's reaction, who was present during the set. Robert, who holds an exhaustive knowledge of electronic music from its origins and of all its aspects -- even of the more obscure ones -- gave a personal but faithful interpretation of Pousseur's studies. Another degree of alteration was highlighted by Philip Jeck, who created a massive and powerful set, adding sounds from other sources (which is totally allowed according to Pousseur's original concept). And finally, Oval -- according to the process that is quintessential to his work, Markus Popp could only produce a piece far removed from its sources; since it is within sound itself that all sonorous source passes through the Oval-process, thus becoming Oval-music -- that is, music having its very own properties."

DJ SPOOKY Sound Unbound CD
2021 restock, at mid-line pricing. Excerpts and Allegories from the Sub Rosa Audio Archives. This is the second volume and follow-up to DJ Spooky's highly-acclaimed Rhythm Science: Excerpts and Allegories from the Sub Rosa Audio Archives Vol. 1 released in 2004. DJ Spooky once again remixes the complete Sub Rosa catalog. More groovy and DJ-oriented, including some unpublished audio, important artists and a big Wave Spectrum poster, this is the ultimate continuous mix-up. Sound Unbound is an audio essay that links artists as diverse as Marcel Duchamp, Vladimir Mayakovsky, Antonin Artaud and Allen Ginsberg with stellar music from John Cage, To Rococo Rot, Iannis Xenakis, Philip Glass, Carsten Nicolai and many more. As Spooky himself puts it, "Sound Unbound illustrates the fact that art isn't about objects anymore. Art is a continuous investigation into humanity's place in the world -- it gives us hope and tells us simply that another world is possible. I hope you listen to the mix and think about it as another kind of text -- a text that asks a simple, yet deceptively complex question: where does the 20th century end and the 21st century begin? Where do we draw the line between art and objects, art and artifacts? In the era of ubiquitous computing, the new vision of music is about omnipresence -- the music is everywhere." Other artists include: Radio Mentale/Matthew Herbert, Martyn Bates, Jean Cocteau, Sun Ra, Mikhail, Gertrude Stein, DJ Spooky vs. Rob Swift, The Master Musicians Of Joujouka, George Heard Hamilton, Raymond Scott, Alter Echo, Pamela Z, Liam Gillick, Aphex Twin, James Joyce, Erik Satie, Steve Reich, Shukar Cika-Laka, Raoul Hausmann, Augustos de Campos, Caetano Veloso, Bill Laswell, Sussan Deyhim, George Lewis/Aki Takase, Bill Laswell, René Magritte, Anthony Braxton & Evan Parker, Pauline Oliveros, Bora Yoon, Pierre Schaeffer, Daniel Bernard Roumain/Ryuichi Sakamoto, Edgard Varèse, Ryoji Ikeda, Sonic Youth, Terry Riley, Luigi Russolo, Fanfare Savale, Trilok Gurtu, Nam June Paik, Morton Subotnick, Hans Arp, Sub Swara, Kurt Schwitters, Walter Ruttmann, Otto Luening & Wladimir Ussachevsky, William S. Casting aside the familiar G-funk vibe of his debut, perhaps as No Need was produced without the involvement of his cousin Ice Cube, he moved into a jazzier -- some would say more East Coast -- direction on this project. The verbal content on No Need shifted as well, moving away from comic interludes and towards a focus on battle raps. No Need for Alarm was produced with his Oakland based Hieroglyphics Crew with Domino, A-Plus, and Casual all contributing beats making the record one of the three 'Hiero Golden Age' releases (along with Souls of Mischief's '93 til Infinity and Casual's Fear Itself)."

MANN, CHICO Double Life LP
"For his latest project Chico Mann recalls, 'When I moved from NY to LA, my intention was to start this AfroRock band, Here Lies Man. What you're hearing on this record is music I wrote for that band but has been reimagined to bring it back to its original form.' Using fewer elements of Highlife for its brand of Afrobeat, Double Life infuses more blues elements while still retaining an Afrobeat authenticity representative of African diasporic music. Since the early 2000's Chico Mann has been involved with projects across a wide swath of respected labels as well as earning the respect of musicians and fans alike. Seamlessly switching between genres such as Afrobeat with his work in Antibalas to dance-oriented adventures as a duo with Captain Planet, his current project explores the realm of Afrobeat with psychedelic flashes in a cinematic fashion."
