BYRDS, THE Live In Amsterdam 1970 LP
The version of the Byrds that played Amsterdam's prestigious Concertgebouw in July 1970 was very different to previous incarnations. The Skip Battin/Gene Parsons rhythm section was tight and allowed the guitars of Roger McGuinn and Clarence White room to roam, most noticeably on an extended "Eight Miles High". Thoroughly road-hardened, the band played material from throughout their entire career and threw in some previously unreleased cover versions as well. Radio VPRO broadcast the gig, the twelve tracks presented here have been chosen to complement the live portion of the untitled LP. Full credits and sleeve notes are provided.

FLEETWOOD MAC BBC Sunday Concert April 9th 1970 LP
Listening to these nine tracks it is hard to believe that this version of Fleetwood Man had only a few weeks left to run. An acid-damaged Peter Green would leave six weeks after this gig and they would never sound this good again. This high-quality BBC recording includes contemporary hits such as "The Green Manalishi" and "Rattlesnake Shake" as well as album tracks featuring the melodic skills of Danny Kirwan ("World In Harmony", "Underway") and some unreleased rockers from Jeremy Spencer ("Tiger", "Great Balls Of Fire"). Full sleeve notes and credits included.

FACES, THE BBC1 Live 1970 LP
The early years of The Faces were characterized by uproarious onstage performances and two disappointing studio albums that failed to capture their onstage excitement. They are fortunate that they were regular visitors to the BBC where their regular appearances on TV and radio proved just how good they were. The tracks here are taken from three high quality 1970 radio broadcasts. Nine tracks give the flavor of a Faces gig -- just loose enough to be exciting and versatile enough to include northern soul, R&B, acoustic folk songs, and a Bob Dylan cover. Full credits and sleeve notes included.

CAM Quid Rides LP
Reissue of this obscure cassette from 1987, a really interesting rarity by Carl Matthews under the CAM moniker. Sturdy synth basslines sculpt solid rhythm patterns that bring to mind the innovations of the moment in electro and dance records. Having in mind that Matthews was a white ambient composer, it's very curious to find him dropping these groovy bombs that sound like a primitive Detroit electro or hip-hop beats, mixed with sampled voices that recall Art of Noise influences. Also. to mention the conceptual work: Quid Rides is inspired in Roman Civilization, as the name of both the album and tracks point (all of them in Latin). Experimental-roman-electro seems to be a pretty weird label but works fine here... Mutant-futuristic-proto-electro for Roman statues would work too. Letterpress cover, including insert with liner notes by Colin Potter.

MATTHEWS, CARL Col LP
Abstrakce Records present one of the most rare, interesting, and difficult-to-find of Carl Matthews's cassettes. On vinyl for the first time and remastered by Colin Potter. Composed and recorded at his own home studio in 1991 and influenced by Harmonia and Cluster, Matthews develops a really personal project. A very delicate usage of rhythm machines, samplers, sequencers, e-bowed guitars that show up briefly hinting at a lo-fi Innovative Communication feeling... The capricious nature of these experiments opens many different doors of wonder to the curious heads, easing deep listening away from clichéd Berlin School, new age or krautrock -- the most obvious reference points here --, into a forever-land of non-academic modernism, where to take shelter and briefly vanish. Quiet but not static, mellow but not too new age-y and trippin' but not too trancey, this music finds its own space and character in the world of home recorded electronica. A true jewel of the European electronic underground.

HUDSON, KEITH Flesh Of My Skin Blood Of My Blood LP
2021 restock; LP version. Originally released in 1974 on Mamba, Flesh Of My Skin Blood Of My Blood is the most hallowed of all those reggae albums which remain unavailable, and Keith Hudson's key achievement in a career launched when, as a fourteen-year-old, he recorded members of The Skatalites on his "Shades Of Hudson" rhythm. After a series of solid-gold productions for Ken Boothe, Delroy Wilson, John Holt, U-Roy and the rest, this album projects Hudson's removal from Jamaica to London and New York studios and transatlantic audiences, and inaugurates a sequence of albums -- classics like Pick A Dub, Brand, Playing It Cool, Playing It Right -- which show his troubled experimentalism better suited to the LP than the cardinal 7" reggae format. Anchored here by Santa Davis and George Fullwood from the Soul Syndicate -- alongside musicians like Augustus Pablo, Count Ossie and Leroy Sibbles -- Hudson's mood is tormented and dazed, as on titles like "Darkest Night," "My Nocturne" and "Testing My Faith," where he struggles for Black senses of commitment --political, existential, religious -- at its breaking point. Magnificently and deadly serious, hauntingly unique, unmissable and unforgettable.

CLAP! CLAP! Liquid Portraits (Red & Purple Vinyl) 2LP
Red and purple vinyl. Italian producer Clap! Clap! returns to Bristol's Black Acre with his third album, Liquid Portraits. Born and raised in Florence, Cristiano Crisci's musical career extends back to the mid-90s where he started out as a rapper, before picking up a saxophone and exploring both jazz and jazz/punk fusion with Trio Cane, and then returning to his electronic roots with A Smile For Timbuctu project. By 2008, Crisci decided to strike it out on his own as Digi G'Alessio, channeling the same hip-hop meets electronic music energies as those animating the nascent Los Angeles beat scene. Soon Crisci hit upon a new formula when he started combining samples from the African continent with energetic drum programming. The results led to the birth of Clap! Clap! in 2013, which has since been recognized and supported by the likes of Paul Simon and Gilles Peterson. Crisci released his first and second albums Tayi Bebba (ACRE 006LP, 2014) and A Thousand Skies (ACRE 009LP, 2016) via Black Acre. Clap! Clap!'s third album once again deploys his inimitable technique in fine style, however with new eyes as this new project signifies a definite shift in his work having spent the last few years learning the art of mixing which has led to some breakthroughs: "In recent years I've spent a lot of time studying essential mixing techniques. I then built an acoustic-treated room and set up my new studio. I started to convert digital into analog and vice versa with good converters and achieved sounds that I've never heard before from my speakers. This had a huge positive impact on my mixes and result on my music." Entitled Liquid Portraits, the album -- as the name suggests -- is a collection of sonic paintings, an attempt at capturing furtive, subconscious memories through sound. The tracks reference trips Crisci took and people he met -- from southern Italy to Hokkaido via the Kif Mountains of Morocco -- as well as more abstract ideas of loss, calmness, and childhood. Having been approached by Paul Simon to work on his 2016 album Stranger To Stranger after Simon discovered Tayi Bebba through his son, Clap! Clap! is no stranger to collaborations and this album features a small cast of talents, such as Italy percussionist Domenico Candellori ("Southern Dub"), Belgian artist Martha Da'ro ("Moving On"), harpist Kety Fusco ("Rising Fire"), and Piero Spitilli ("Liquid Portraits").

CASTAGNETTO, M. CAYE Leap Second LP
LP version. "Influenced by a life split between Lima, London, and Twentynine Palms, Peru-born M. Caye Castagnetto's Leap Second is an intriguingly personal and hard to classify debut album. The album is a thick collage of samples Caye recorded with different artists and musicians, including Beatrice Dillon and the late Aileen Bryant, that spans five years in the making. There is something in Leap Second that tracks the speed of bodies, how they approach and retreat. The ten tracks are speedy and languid, thick ruffles, and dirges. In parts it feels like one's stumbled upon a forgotten incredible '70s folk record but that feeling gets broken quickly by clever sleights of hand. Caye's balladry is angular, time is elastic. Each song is a fresh cape. How dandies really mean it, so masc- that it's fay, how the only moment is this one and it's just passed, etcetera."

SEEN, THE For Sake Of Joy Of Study Of Oneself Together CD
"The origins of this piece date back to the December 1st, 1991. I'd attended an all-day concert at the Red Rose Theatre in Finsbury Park, London -- a benefit gig for Terry Day -- featuring dozens of musicians in various groupings throughout the afternoon and evening. One of those musicians was John Stevens. This was my first exposure to John and his music and the beginning of a fascination still very much part of my every-day. John performed three times that afternoon; with his Spontaneous Music Ensemble -- comprising Nigel Coombes and Roger Smith later joined by Maggie Nicols and Phil Minton, in a trio with Larry Stabbins and Paul Rogers and in an unaccompanied role, reciting a text composed by himself. He gave no introduction or back story to the piece. It just existed as is. Gone in a few fleeting moments. A couple of years later I secured an audience recording of the concert made by Andy Isham. All of John's activity that day was on the recording and through repeated listening over the following two decades, I became very attached to the spoken word piece. Earlier this year I finally got around to transcribing the text, hoping that one day I'd be able to include it in a project. This little dream was enabled by Trestle Records and their generous offer to organize and record a session. Finally, John's inspirational words can be heard again and influence others the way they did me, as a young man, twenty-six years ago." --Mark Wastell (December 2017) The One Day Band sessions are an ongoing series of improvisations hosted by Trestle Records. Musicians, sometimes meeting for the first time, are invited to collaborate on a record made in a single day. The idea is to create a supportive studio environment to facilitate the production of new spontaneous music. Personnel: Jennifer Allum - violin; Douglas Benford - objects; Harry Broadbent - Rhodes piano; Bertrand Denzler - tenor saxophone; Phil Durrant - modular synth; Phil Julian - electronics; Dominic Lash - double bass; Stewart Lee - narration; Graham McKeachan - double bass; Mark Wastell - tam tam, harmonium.

SUGIMOTO & TAKASHI MASUBUCHI, TAKU Live At OTOOTO & Permian CD
On Live At OTOOTO & Permian, two guitarists from Japan, Taku Sugimoto and Takashi Masubuchi, ask a series of unresolved questions -- about time, about interplay, about tonality. Those who know Sugimoto's music will recognize here a certain tension, and a feeling for the apposite; these two traits have been core to his playing and composing since he first introduced himself to the broader listening public, in the '90s, with albums like Opposite. Masubuchi, who has also recently collaborated with Shizuo Uchida and Straytone, intersects with Sugimoto in a number of ways -- they share interests in Morton Feldman and in folk blues, both of which are evident here in the abstract. Personnel: Taku Sugimoto - electric guitar; Takashi Masubuchi - acoustic guitar.

SEALED KNOT, THE Twenty CD
"Imagination is central to the connection between the audience and these performers. What enthralls me is how the music can be approached in so many different ways. Sometimes I will listen whilst visualizing the creation of some vast abstract painting; Mark Wastell's chimes conjuring yellow flashes of light offset by electric color washes from Rhodri Davies's e-bowed harp, and organic surface textures brought to life through Burkhard Beins's found objects interacting with the surface of a meticulously mic'd drum skin. Or another day, let the imagination run free as the sound embraces you, as if being driven through a new city in a country and culture previously unexplored. Senses heightened, taking in sights and sounds never before encountered, unsure as to what lies around the next corner." --David J. Nibloe (from the booklet notes) Recorded at Cafe OTO, London on March 2, 2020 by Shaun Crook. Personnel: Burkhard Beins - amplified percussion; Rhodri Davies - amplified lap harp; Mark Wastell - dual 32" past tam tams, gongs, Nepalese singing bowls.

CHRIS & COSEY Exotika LP
2021 restock, on transparent violet vinyl. This hugely popular mid-eighties Exotika album was originally released in 1987 by Play It Again Sam. It includes such Chris & Cosey classics as the crowd-pleasing "BeatBeatBeat", the haunting ballad "Dr. John (Sleeping Stephen)", and the original version of their seminal title track "Exotika", which was adopted as an electronica anthem, most notably on the GOA scene and in the US West and East Coast gay clubs of the later 1980s. Includes a glossy insert with historic photographs and press clippings."Chris & Cosey beat most of 87's mainstream dance-floor contenders on their own territory of sheer pleasure, urged joy. 'BeatBeatBeat' is extreme, a revelation." --Ian Gittins (Melody Maker, 1987)"Chris & Cosey have made a great dance record, but it's their kind of dancing. No junk here. They're crazy enough to be sincere about their musical Pleasureland and they want to share their discovery. Come and feel the sound as though your life depends on it: if it were up to them, it would depend on it." --Rockpool, 1987

HERSELF Rigel Playground LP
Herself is the moniker of multi-instrumentalist Gioele Valenti, also known as JuJu in more recent years (Fuzz Club) or as part of the psych project Lay Llama's. Herself's work was described by critics as the harmonious meeting between Sparklehorse, Gravenhurst, and Will Oldham. Valenti's songwriting takes inspiration from low-fidelity apocalyptic folk, crooning and pop; boasting a rather extensive discography. Well rooted in tradition, his music often ventures in the realms of subtle experimentation. Rigel Playground prepares the listener for a journey through cosmic folk, in which traditional Brit pop flirts with an alt vein, as if the Beatles and Sparklehorse would meet the torments of Nick Drake and the intimacy of a Mike Scott. Continuing a long list of illustrious collaborations (Amaury Cambuzat of Ulan Bator, John Fallon of The Steppes, Capra Informis of GOAT, among others), the prestigious guest on this record is Jonathan Donahue from Mercury Rev, a group of absolute prominence in the international indie panorama, which in addition to having lent his voice to the single "The Beast of Love" -- as Herself says -- informs the essence of the entire record. Not surprisingly Mercury Rev chose Herself to support them during their Italian tour in 2019.

SOULSIDE This Ship 7"
"This is the band's first new music since 1989 and was recorded during a brief run of European shows in autumn of 2019 at Jamor Studio in Prague with Ondrej Jezek. Formed in 1986, Soulside was one of the strongest voices in the DC punk's third generation, alongside groups like Swiz and Shudder to Think. The band released a self-titled full-length on Sammich Records as well as a number of records on Dischord -- the Trigger EP, the Bass/103 7", and the Hot Bodi-Gram LP -- before parting ways. All of the Dischord records were rereleased as the Soon Come Happy CD in 1990. In 2015, the group -- singer Bobby Sullivan, guitarist Scott McCloud, drummer Alexis Fleisig, and bassist Johnny Temple -- reunited for the first time in 25 years and have continued to perform together as time and opportunity allow."

BLAKESLEE, GUY Postcards From The Edge CD
Perhaps best known as the upside-down, guitar-wielding front man of psych-legends The Entrance Band, and solo albums released under the ENTRANCE moniker, notably 2004's country blues epic Wandering Stranger (Fat Possum), 2006's self-released cult classic, Prayer of Death (which led to the formation of The Entrance Band), and most recently 2017's Book of Changes (Thrill Jockey), Guy Blakeslee has typically used his own name to release his most experimental and confounding records. Postcards From The Edge is no exception. Nearly two decades into a lifer's voyage of shapeshifting through shadowy realms of the American underground, Guy Blakeslee, poses these and other conundrums on his dramatic new album, Postcards From The Edge. Recorded in New Orleans at the house studio of Preservation Hall Jazz Band, with former Sonic Ranch engineer and producer, Enrique Tena Padilla (Oh Sees, Wand), and featuring appearances from singers Lael Neale, Hale May, Rachel Fannan, and drummer Derek James of The Entrance Band, Postcards From The Edge is electrified by the spirit of sonic experimentation, and the fervent desire to chart a map into unknown territory. Across the record's seven tracks, Blakeslee's questing lyrics teem with stormy emotion, his plaintive voice finding succor in richly-textured melodies that soar over lushly-produced soundscapes, always on the verge of collapse. A wandering soul who has spent the better part of his musical life on the road, Blakeslee, a Baltimore native and LA transplant currently residing in the wilds of Virginia, has supported the likes of Spiritualized, Beach House, Cat Power, Mazzy Star, Interpol, and Father John Misty to name a few. FIRST HATE A Prayer For The Unemployed LP
2017 release. Debut album from 2017 by Copenhagen synth-pop duo First Hate. Having refined their impeccable knack for melodies and dramatic pop productions, A Prayer For The Unemployed is a cornerstone in the world building of First Hate. Dark club beats meet synth melodies reminiscing both '80s pop hits and more recent Euro dance lifestyle. The theatrical yet sincere vocal of charismatic front singer Anton Falck Gansted tells tales of euphoria and loneliness, of cursed relationships, sentimental nights and never-ending dances while the sun rises. A dire atmosphere throughout the album is juxtaposed with use of playful flutes, harmonicas, and sparkling trance keys, perfectly encapsulating all of the opposites that makes for the memories of youth. Since 2014, First Hate has gained a truly dedicated following all around the world. Building from the releases of their first EPs First Hate (2014) and Mind of a Gemini (2016) along with countless tours in Europe and Asia, the band has become a sensible catalyst for many fans caught in between youthful naivety and a growing feeling of mature responsibilities. A Prayer For The Unemployed provided an even more solid framework for First Hate's characteristic aesthetic and broadened the reach of the band.

75 DOLLAR BILL LITTLE BIG BAND Live At Tubby's 2LP
"NYC's 75 Dollar Bill began its prolific career in 2012, after percussionist Rick Brown -- a veteran of the indie underground (Fish & Roses, Run On, V-Effect) -- and noise scene guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Che Chen -- connected via MySpace. Since that initial jam session, when Brown began experimenting with his signature plywood crate drum rhythms, they have released three LPs and a clutch of self-released cassette and digital releases. Last year's double album I Was Real received serious critical acclaim -- The Wire calling it 2019's Album of the Year. On their first live album, Live At Tubby's, 75 Dollar Bill assembled a unique 'little big band' [Sue Garner on bass, Cheryl Kingan on sax, Steve Maing on guitar, Jim Pugliese on percussion and Karen Waltuch on viola] for the small Kingston, NY club show. Recorded on the last day of their spring tour, the record puts a new perspective on themes from their body of work: a little more intimacy, a little more freedom, a little more controlled chaos. Brown's idiosyncratic rhythms are all the more hypnotizing in Tubby's cozy setting, and Chen's furious guitar work cuts and hums with sounds seemingly only attainable on stage. It's an album both challenging and immediate. The expanded 75 Dollar Bill's affinity for improvisation and the avant-garde even leads to a rousing take on the Ornette Coleman classic, 'Friends And Neighbors' that feels right at home in their own repertoire. The listener can't help but feel present and part of the communal joy and catharsis being shared here in this room. This performance at Tubby's turned out not only to be the last show of their tour, but the last show possible as the pandemic hit. Originally offered as a digital only release on 75 Dollar Bill's Bandcamp, Live At Tubby's now documents a highlight and closure of sorts; this kind of musical improvisation and community interaction being on hold for the foreseeable future. This double album on Grapefruit will have to tide everyone over until it can all happen again."

The label hopes that Aicha will enable you to carve out some healing space in amongst the chaos of the world. Aicha was previously released on cassette in Morocco only in the late 1990s. Maalem Mahmoud Gania was a particularly prolific artist recording for many labels in Morocco and many details about the recording of this particular album or the people involved are destined to remain a mystery. However, the album was recorded in the Gania's home town of Essaouira with only a small and intimate group of supporting musicians. The resulting album, after the dizzying intensity of the opening song, offers more relaxed, laidback interpretations of the Gnawa ritual repertoire, and a deeper, more gentle sound than Hive Mind Records' previous Gania release, Colours of the Night (2017). The album shines a light on Mahmoud's virtuoso guimbri playing and mastery of Gnawa songcraft, and is a standout amongst his many cassette releases. The album comes with extensive sleeve notes written by Tim Abdellah Fuson, Berkeley scholar and curator of the excellent Moroccan Tape Stash blog. First pressing of this release comes with a print of the album cover.

UNIVERSITY CHALLENGED Oh Temple! 2LP
University Challenged are Ajay Saggar ("Bhajan Bhoy"), Oli Heffernan ("Ivan The Tolerable"), and Kohhei Matsuda ("Bo Ningen"). The trio began in 2019, playing shows in Holland, where they gained a reputation for delivering highly dynamic sense-rattling shows, ranging from gentle melodic orchestral spinouts to epic power jams, all backed by beautiful self-made films in the background. The plan had always been to record an album, and get the collective musical force and spirit cemented to vinyl. Many months of hard work and focus paid dividends with the majestic eight-track double album Oh Temple! ready to be delivered to the world at large. Mixed and produced by Ajay Saggar at his Soundation Studio in Holland in the summer of 2020, and mastered by Oli Heffernan in England. This is a beautiful collection of tracks where the pioneering spirit of the three artists allowed them to cross musical boundaries with their bold and accomplished playing to forge eight unique and mesmeric numbers. While there is commonality in the artists approach to music, there are a wide variety of styles -- kosmische musik, electronic experimentation, deep spiritual jazz, modern classical, pastoral guitar soli, and more. These tracks sound fresh and revealing now, and will certainly do so for a long time to come.

BOCOUM, DAMON ALBARN, TOUMANI DIABATE AND FRIENDS, AFEL Mali Music 2LP
2021 restock; originally released in 2002. In July 2000, Damon Albarn travelled to Mali for Oxfam's On the Line project, which focused on people living along the Greenwich Meridian. He seized the chance to meet and play with the Malian musicians whose recordings he loved, and to exchange ideas with them in their own backyard. Albarn's chosen instrument was a battered melodica. His musical encounters were leisurely, low-key, and immersive, as natural and spontaneous as could be. Touring the capital, Bamako, and its surrounding villages, he sat in on club and private jam sessions, playing concerts and street corners, bars and boats. He hooked up with practically any musician he came across, from enthusiastic amateurs to such master-musicians as Toumani Diabaté, Lobi Traoré, Afel Bocoum, Kassé Mady Diabaté, and the only female ngoni player in Mali, Ko Kan Ko Sata. "One of my favourite memories is Les Escrocs playing a party at Toumani's house," says Albarn. "Bass and drums doing dead funky Malian reggae, with them in shell-suits and patent-leather shoes doing a kind of feminised ragga version of the James Brown shimmy." The tapes kept on running, for more than 40 hours, capturing the volatile collage of sound that would become Mali Music. Back home in Albarn's London studio, the recordings took a few more spins. In line with their original inherent diversity, some make nods to reggae, house, rock, raga, and some stay just as they are. The bass playing of Junior Dan emerges with a unifying authority that recalls his years with Augustus Pablo. Then the tapes returned to Mali, for further contributions from the musicians there. "My idea is to set up loads of dialogues between this music and other music that I love," says Albarn. "I'm sick of the cultural self-assurance you get in the West. I want to get everyone into Malian music."

COLEY, BYRON Father Yod's Kitchen Book
Naomi Yang has been threatening to get this book together for years, but the Trump Virus shutdown finally goaded her onto action. Inspired by oddball community cookbooks through the ages, this is a heavily annotated collection of recipes involving simple techniques and common ingredients. In this instance, the community represented is the musical sub-underground of Western Massachusetts and beyond. Mr. Coley is a home cook, whose professional restaurant experience mostly involves dishwashing. But over the last quarter century he has fed family, friends, traveling musicians and large events at his house, the Yod Space, Feeding Tube Records/Rox Art, and various other places. Accompanied by his own commentary, as well as that of those who have et his vittles, this book should be as useful as reading material in the bathroom, as it is for instruction in the kitchen. Designed by Naomi Yang, contributors include Steve Albini, Elisa Ambrogio, Kristin Anderson, Alan Bishop, Julie Cafritz, Benoit Chaput, Ben Chasny, Addie Coley, Hud Coley, Chris Corsano, Beth Crawford, Dave Crouch, Alison Darrow, Abby Drake, Lauren Dunn, Lili Dwight, Valle Dwight, Ilene Gerhardt, Tom Givan, Jim Glaspole, Kim Gordon, Emily Hubley, Georgia Hubley, Michael Hurley, Dan Ireton, Pat Ireton, Glenn Jones, Elaine Kahn, Heather Kaplow, Andrew Kesin, Maria Kozic, Matt Krefting, Damon Krukowski, Michio Kurihara, Willie Lane, Ted Lee, Tom Leonard, Lida Lewis, J Mascis, Cynthia Meadows, Amy Mehaffey, Roger Miller, John Moloney, Coco Gordon Moore, Thurston Moore, Bill Nace, Alden O'Donaghue, Kerstin Park-Labella, Charles Plymell, Lauisa Reichenheim, Wayne Rogers, Aaron Rosenblum, Kevin Sahagian, Dave Schramm, John Shaw, Jacqueline Sheridan, Nora Smith, Jack Tieleman, Matt Valentine, Kate Village, Naomi Yang. YOUNGE & ALI SHAHEED MUHAMMAD, ADRIAN Roy Ayers LP
2020 repress, forthcoming 2021. LP version. "In February 2018, Roy Ayers performed four sold out shows in Los Angeles as part of the Jazz Is Dead Black History Month series. It wasn't until 2020 that fans of Ayers discovered that in addition to those shows, the legendary vibraphone player had also recorded an entire album of new material with Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad. Over the course of its eight original compositions, written collaboratively by Younge, Shaheed Muhammad & Ayers and recorded at Younge's Linear Labs in Los Angeles, the resulting album sounds both like an unearthed an unreleased album from Ayers' classic period in the 1970s (which produced the oft-sampled 'Red, Black & Green,' 'We Live In Brooklyn, Baby,' 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine,' and 'Running Away'), as well as something startling, new and unexpected. Joining Ayers, Younge & Shaheed Muhammad on this musical journey are drummer Greg Paul, vocalists Loren Oden, Joy Gilliam, Saudia Yasmein, Elgin Clark & Anitra Castleberry, as well as Phil Ranelin & Wendell Harrison of the legendary Spiritual Jazz label Tribe Records. The 8 tracks on this album testify to the love not only of a legendary musician's legacy, but to the vitality & necessity of this music and these sounds in the present era, a thread that will likely run throughout all of the upcoming releases from Jazz Is Dead Records."

VA Spiritual Jazz 13: NOW Part 1 CD
Modern sounds for the 21st century featuring modal, progressive and esoteric contemporary jazz from the UK, Spain, Netherlands, Finland, USA, Belgium, Canada, South Africa, Sweden, Germany, and Italy. The first 12 volumes of Jazzman Records' hugely popular Spiritual Jazz series have unearthed a wealth of historic recordings in the genre, collating a variety of works from the '50s to the '80s by artists from all around the world. And so, with Volume 13, the label turn their attention to what's happening NOW. Over the course of 24 tracks and spanning two sets, Jazzman Records present an overview of the contemporary exponents of spiritual jazz; musicians who are intent on bringing something personal to the table, as much as they recognize the importance of those who have paved the way for them. We feature music recorded within the past 20 years and from 15 different countries, including modern classics from veterans Steve Reid and Idris Ackamoor, providing a vital link between the past masters and the enlightened new generation. It's pioneers such as John Coltrane, Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders, et al, with their innovations in reaching another plane of consciousness that was and remains uppermost in the minds of exponents of spiritual jazz. Fittingly, several of the artists featured on this compilation, such as Cat Toren and David Boykin, are practitioners of the art of music therapy and sound healing, and have absolute conviction in the role of song as solace. The pioneers may no longer be with us, but their saintly selves loom large, shining a light in the darkness, inspiring many a brave new disciple today, as this album will testify: the new wave of jazz is gathering pace and still sounds fresh, vibrant and as relevant as ever. Extensive liners with pictures. Features Benjamin Herman, Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids, Nat Birchall, Chip Wickham, Jimi Tenor And Kabukabu, Black Flower, Darryl Yokley, Damon Locks Black Monument Ensemble, Oiro Pena, Cat Toren, Shabaka & The Ancestors, and Makaya McCraven.

This record has a clear '80s English influence (Killing Joke, Vex, A Touch of Hysteria, Blood and Roses, etc.) but it also very modern-day Barcelona with the reverb as important as an instrument and totally DIY. 2011's excellent self-titled LP has been bettered in sound, production and song. JAAR, NICOLAS Telas 2LP
2021 repress. "Four new chapters from Nicolás Jaar in Telas. Here, again, it's the odder and more essence-like devotion to sound that is semi-narrative, ambient, and concrète that we heard and were drawn to in Pomegranates. Telas gestures towards a more refined tone, with less sudden shifts and vignettes, incrementally shaping an hour of self-reflective music with tracks building and collapsing across its vinyl sides. When Telas was first drafted and presented to Mana it felt appropriate to mention a sense of monastic retreat. Where Pomegranates often felt epic-like in its scope and shifting scales, this album conveys images of quieter moments spent tending to a vegetable patch within a cloistered garden, perhaps, or the threading of a tapestry with filigree. Nicolás often moves slowly and deliberately throughout, focused on manipulating gauzy fibres and room tone or fluttering around other cryptic actors, so that when bursts of clarity and emotion appear they take on a deeper character. There's a greater sense of contemplation and patience in the album's logic, pointing to a conception of art, melody, and sound which is continuously under construction. In relationship with sister-album Cenizas and surface qualities of recent Against All Logic material it feels that there's a centre being defined and meditated upon. Telas was made between December 2016 and January 2020." Black & clear vinyl in gatefold jacket, with art by Somnath Bhatt.

NOISE Tenno LP
"For over four decades, Reiko Omura and Tori Kudo have endlessly woven themselves throughout the avant-garde and underground scene of Japan. While internationally appreciated in countless incarnations and contexts (Maher Shalal Hash Baz, Guys & Dolls), if one were to seek out an early moment in which the two artists created something truly awe inspiring, 1980's Tenno would be it. As Noise, the duo experimented with the juxtaposition of Kudo's extended organ-based dirges (be they eerie and/or harmonious) and fragile, meditative harmonies found in Omura's voice and more abstract moments of minimal trumpet, sparse drum and atonal guitar. Simultaneously tense and beautiful, echoes of Tenno can be found resonating in the work of their contemporaries and countless others spanning the past 40 years and an infinite amount more to come. The LP was originally released by ALM and subsequently reissued in 1997 on CD (Pataphysique) and LP (Org), and on CD again in 2005 (Alchemy). Just past it's 40 year anniversary, Moone Records is elated to announce the first edition of Tenno released outside of Japan as a LP in a limited first run of 500 copies -- bringing the monumental release back into print on vinyl for the first time in 23 years."

HEMPHILL, JULIUS The Boye Multi-National Crusade For Harmony 7CD
"In response to the arguably self-righteous pronouncements made in the 1990s as to what jazz is and isn't, Julius Hemphill (1938?1995) spoke up as he had done throughout his career. 'Well, you often hear people nowadays talking about the tradition, tradition, tradition. But they have tunnel vision in this tradition. Because tradition in African- American music is wide as all outdoors.' This collection of music, this celebration of artistic collaborations that engaged Julius Hemphill throughout his life, adds much to what we know of his creativity in exploring the implications in that wide space. His work, done in what was not much more than twenty-five years, illuminated so many byways of that protean tradition, created in America against the direst of odds. Equally vital, Julius claimed, with great passion, his space to be expressive. He worked inward as much as he looked outward, in his artistic creativity and cultural engagements. This box set contains musical compositions and performances that have come to light from the Julius Hemphill Archive at the Fales Library of New York University. These performances present thirty-five Hemphill compositions culled from close to 180 audio and visual documents of his work. Twenty-five of these works did not receive a commercial recording in his lifetime. Also represented in this box set are ensemble contexts Julius formed which did not receive substantial, or in some cases, any public documentation. These performances put Julius's improvisational work as a saxophonist and flutist to the fore, from solo to quintet contexts. (The one exception being Disc 4, where we hear pieces Julius wrote for others to interpret.) Equally important, these performances deepen our experience of Julius's long associations in artistic collaboration." --Marty Ehrlich (from the liner notes)

So we are making the first four Witch albums available in archival reissue form. As with our box set, the audio is nigh-perfect -- restored and remastered from the original master tapes. The entirety of Witch's first album, restored and remastered from master tapes, and presented as an archival reissue. Witch's musical arc is contained to a five year span and, in retrospect, is a logical one. The band's first two, self-produced albums - released in unison with the birth of the commercial Zambian recording industry -- are exuberant experiments in garage rock, and are as influenced by the Rolling Stones as they are James Brown. Thus Introduction, their first, is the perfect starting point for anyone interested in delving into the Witch band, or Zamrock in general."

DADUB Hypersynchron 2LP
Of absolute dynamic accord. Harmonized polar motion of temporally phased rhythm. Multi-parallel integration of circuitry on the atomic level. All of these descriptives apply to the latest masterwork from Dadub: Hypersynchron. 12 tracks displaying the furthest travels through quantum bass space, from collaborators Daniele Antezza and Marco Donnarumma. From the sinister to the breathtaking; in a world where an inverse red sun is damped by burgundy clouds over crimson alloy alleys, Hypersynchron is not an easy digestible or disposable work. Its rhythms set a future standard perfectly balanced across the farthest known and unknown spectra of electronic music, with bass technology so alien and precise that it may indeed take centuries to reverse engineer. Grooves from a hidden galaxy on axis-tilt just out-of-reach from our world, longing to join with our human planet interpretation of time. Presented across two slabs of heavy wax, accompanied by a remake from the Dark Lord himself, Scorn. Audio ayahuasca for the dimensionally adventurous.

BARRECA, MARC The Empty Bridge CD
"With The Empty Bridge, Marc Barreca again exploits his distinct talent for translating landscapes into sound. The music was created in and reflects the influence of contrasting environments -- the beauty and stillness of the Cascade Mountains and the muted industrial nightscape of the Duwamish Waterway, complete with its massive, nowcondemned, empty freeway bridge. The pieces are sculpted from layers of synthesized and sampled instruments, field recordings and processed vinyl. With these sources, Barreca achieves a level of compositional sophistication that deftly combines elements of ambient, drone, noise, and sound art with contrapuntal lines running above and below the dense and shifting aural environments. Composed during a period of tranquil isolation -- isolation created by a global pandemic, a broken concrete link to the city, and a remote mountain cabin -- The Empty Bridge evokes immersive, evolving, contrasting landscapes."

Episode 23 unveils another beguiling blast of dancefloor disasters direct from the legendary and catastrophic Discotheque la Despair DJ, Dustin E. Herewith Particles present an era unfolding before your very ears with a succulent helping of funky soul beat and garage punk that wasn't punk at the time and wasn't recorded in a garage, but who cares when it sounds this good. 20 tracks released between 1965-1969. BUYEPONGO/QUITAPENAS Buyepongo Vs Quitapenas 7"
You might say Buyepongo and Quitapenas are sibling neighbor bands since they are of Mexican-American heritage, share some band members, have similar musical influences and are based in the Los Angeles area. Both transmit a similarly positive, socially committed outlook and life philosophy through their creative output. In addition, they have toured together and are part of the same larger socio-musical community. That is not to say the band's sound exactly the same or have the same origin story. Rather, it means they have enough in common that over the years they have forged a strong bond of friendship that has proven mutually beneficial for both bands and has helped them grow and build in a unique, positive way. While they each maintain their own separate identities, they share a long-standing, committed fan base and both have released music on the same label in the past as well. Most importantly Buyepongo and Quitapenas are part of an exciting generation of underground, independent, alternative Latin music inspired by tropical and folkloric roots from the Caribbean, Mexico, Central and South America as well as Africa, all of which is played with a jazz influence mixed with elements of psychedelia, electronica, and global funk. With all of these connections it was only a matter of time before these brother bands would decide to collaborate on a release, and in 2020 they did just that, approaching Peace & Rhythm with a concept born of their recent joint tour (which was sadly cut short by the global pandemic). Now, as 2021 begins a new year full of hope, this release is set to start things off with two super-hot tracks presented side-by-side and packaged with some dope artwork by honorary band member Deladeso. Buyepongo's "Cantarito" is an infectious, funky tropical romp that is the perfect soundtrack to an instant fiesta full of family and friends, food and fun. The lyrics mention making traditional tortillas and drinking from a cantarito (clay cup) while the band plays and the sun shines. The flip, "Inspiración" by Quitapenas, is equally upbeat and literally "inspiring" (pun intended), with its positive energy and lyrical outlook about the creative process. Both cuts are fueled by infectious beats, compelling vocals, intricate guitar interplay and soaring sax, carrying you away into a state of ecstasy that is akin to a heightened feeling of spiritual bliss and oneness.

SELDA Selda CD
Reduced price, last copies... Imagine if Julia Child had marched against Vietnam, stood on the steps of the Pentagon, and placed a flower in a gun barrel. Selda Ba?can's later records have that same cross of easygoing motherly warmth and righteous anger. This 1979 album (technically her fourth, although six of these songs were also released on her third), was recorded when Turkey was at its most politically polarized. Selda was sentenced to a total of over 500 years in prison right about the time it came out. A pile of acoustic guitars and ba?lamas all going off at once under a blanket of reverb, with lyrics about blood, wood, mountains, families, and desperate troubles, so it's a thick squirt for a folk album. Selda's voice can either be sultry or really surge with emotion, and when she does belt one, it's oddly high and completely unique. Her reward was the love of Turkey's people, but also nine trials and three prison terms from the right wing military government of the '80s. Remastered sound, insert/booklet with liner notes.

GEDGE, DAVID Go Out And Get 'Em, Boy!: Tales From The Wedding Present: Volume One Of The Official Autobiography Book
The first instalment of David Gedge's long-awaited "memoir-in-comic-book-form". The stories featured in this stunning 176-page, matte-laminated, hardback book have previously only been available to readers of the Tales From The Wedding Present comic book series. This collected edition comes with forty pages of never-before-seen additional material and an introduction by Ian Rankin. David has written this autobiography together with long-time musical associate Terry de Castro, and the stories are illustrated by virtuoso artist Lee Thacker. It's in chronological order, beginning with David's childhood in England and South Africa and continues up to the inception of The Wedding Present. On the way we learn about some of the romantic experiences that may have informed his writing, how he first met his hero -- the legendary BBC presenter John Peel -- and the true story behind the classic Wedding Present song "My Favourite Dress". "An autobiography of The Wedding Present would be great on its own. An autobiography in beautiful graphic novel form? Even better!" --Dan Vebber (writer, The Simpsons). "This is brilliant! It's like the storyboard for a Wedding Present biopic." --Marc Riley (Broadcaster, BBC). "This is a Wedding Present fan's dream come true. Pure unfiltered Gedge; the inside track on what makes him tick and anecdotes aplenty. Essential!" --Mike Gayle (author). 176-page, hardback graphic novel.

BELL, ANDY The View From Halfway Down LP
Repressed; LP version. Blue vinyl. Ride guitarist/singer Andy Bell releases his debut solo album. The product of a gradual, four-year process and finished during lockdown, the album was entirely written and recorded by Andy, engineered by Gem Archer and mastered by Heba Kadry. Back in 2016, Andy was inspired by David Bowie's death to be more proactive about finishing his songs, more confident about sharing them and to channel all of this into finally making a solo album. He laid down some tracks in former Beady Eye and Oasis bandmate Gem's studio, but got diverted when Ride's live reunion blossomed into a full return. A run of two albums, an EP and two world tours later, it would take a pandemic to give Andy the space to complete The View From Halfway Down. From the ecstatic psych pop of "Love Comes In Waves", to the heady loops of "Indica" and deeply groove-led "Skywalker", the eight tracks mix summery melodies with soundscapes and studio experimentation. The end result sits neatly between Ride's widescreen shoegaze and GLOK's textured electronics, variously inspired by The Stone Roses, Spacemen 3, The Beatles, The Byrds, The Beta Band, Stereolab, Neu!, Can, John Fahey, The Kinks, The La's, The Who, and the United States Of America. As for the album title, it comes from a particularly dark episode of BoJack Horseman and a poem that scriptwriter Alison Tafel wrote for the penultimate show. The spoiler-free version of the story goes like this: "The poem describes someone committing suicide by jumping to their death and the regret the protagonist experiences when he sees 'the view from halfway down'. Although, of course, it's too late to change what's going to happen. I read this poem as having a message of suicide prevention: if you could see the view from halfway down, you would never go through with anything that would end your life. I've never been suicidal, but I felt really moved by this brilliant poem when I watched the show during Ride's US tour in Autumn 2019 . . . The early stages of lockdown, you could feel the tension in the air, causing what felt like a global panic attack. But, in common with what I've heard from others who can experience anxiety for no reason in their everyday lives, I felt strangely calm in the midst of all of this, seeing things in my life very clearly. Such clarity allowed me to finally compile this record..."

SLICK SHOOTA Function LP
Montreal-based producer and DJ Slick Shoota releases Function, his debut LP and first solo release on the Teklife imprint. A native of Norway known for his renowned Oslo club night Ball Em Up, he's been a member of the elite crew since 2015, contributing tracks to the label's compilations such as On Life Vol. 2 and VIP Trax. Using a unique palate that combines both traditional footwork drums and eclectic otherworld sonics, this album expands on the signature sound he's been brewing during the course of his career, celebrating his longtime love of the Chicago soundscape, with a healthy helping of UK rave, jungle, and vibes from other fast paced club realms. Slick starts the record off with "Hovercraft", a big burly mutant rap beat riding a glowing titanic wave of jungle subbass, with vicious hi-hats stabbing through the mix. "Desire Path" follows with hysterical horns cruising along a stampede of erratic Chicago percussion. A glitchy, malfunctioning computer meets drumline stomps on "See Me Flex", resulting in a psychotic, yet psychedelic sci-fi soundscape. Ultra-distorted hardcore kicks open up "Jellyneck", dropping straight into a dungeon of ghostly vocals and headlong toms. "Warehouse 2K" opens up the B-side with R&B chops and lasers floating on a charming cloud of pulsating pads. Mad doppler sirens loop around your head on "Delahaze", as distant clangs and crashes fight an impatient, throbbing bassline. Classic rave atmospheres are met with Slick's elegant sound design on "MTL Hardcore", his ode to his adoptive city. The album closes off with "Special Tek", channeling the signature quirky drum sounds of the late DJ Rashad over a pounding, fast paced house beat, a wonderful nod to the windy city and its influential sonic culture. Carving out his own sound from the legacies of Chicago, the UK, and other underground club hotspots, Slick Shoota has found his own recognizable voice within these realms of dance music, and this LP serves as documentation of that solidified voice. Years of studying the masters and immersing himself with their work has clearly paid off, and he's respectfully taking these sounds he loves in exciting new directions. Bridging gaps both historical and geographical, Function marks a pivotal point in his career, and is clear evidence that Slick Shoota is vital member of the legendary Teklife family.

MIDWIFE Like Author, Like Daughter 2LP
"On the heels of Midwife's 2020 sophomore album, Forever, The Flenser is pleased to offer a new vinyl edition of her debut Like Author, Like Daughter, remastered as a double LP in a gatefold jacket. Like Author, Like Daughter is a portrait of Madeline Johnston's final year as a resident of Denver's famed D.I.Y venue Rhinoceropolis, which closed in a rash of politically motivated assaults on creative spaces across the United States. The album internalizes loss, addiction, and abandonment and wrings them through distorted power chords, melancholy leads, and sheets of drone to create building, aching monuments to past-selves and lost relationships as positivist statements of resilience and selflove. It's a record that is impossible to listen to without a lump in the throat. All songs on this release were written by Johnston between November, 2015 and January, 2017. It was performed and recorded by her and Tucker Theodore in Denver at Rhinoceropolis and INAMBULANCE in Olympia, WA."

CS + KREME Snoopy 2LP
2021 repress. "Vanguard musicians have long been fascinated with the liminal state. From Richard D. James' famous experiments with lucid dreaming to the 'hypnagogic pop' movement of the late 2000s, the half-conscious zone has often been seen as a portal to unhinged creativity. Enter CS + Kreme, a Melbourne duo who have released a few low-key but excellent singles of heavy-lidded pop for the likes of Total Stasis and The Trilogy Tapes. On their debut double-LP, Snoopy, Conrad Standish and Sam Karmel make good on the promise of those early records. Across eight circuitous tracks, they transcend stylish, slo-mo electronic post-punk and arrive in an as-yet-unexplored territory with rules dictated only by their own dream logic." --Resident Advisor Features composer James Rushford and Jonnine Standish (HTRK)

PARKER, EVAN Monoceros LP
2021 repress. "Originally recorded direct to disc and released by Incus in 1978, this new edition from Treader is pressed from the original stampers. Hand-finished sleeve. 'Parker uses rapid tonguing techniques and circular breathing to create a sound all his own, marked by the simultaneous intonation of multiple notes. One hears a note as well as all the residual tones around it; each breath ends up sounding like a battle between the different registers of the horn. At various times, Parker's saxophone sounds like dolphin speech, electronic tape squeals, or human murmurs; namely, anything but what it actually is. His language on the instrument is essential listening for anyone interested in acoustic experimental music' --AllMusic. 'Eight years after Topography Of The Lungs, and two years after his Saxophone Solos, Monoceros was the most muscular statement of Evan Parker's solo saxophone muse. Superbly recorded, it seemed to place the listener within the chaotic air flows of the saxophone's own tubing. Philip Clark said: 'Parker's dialogue with the saxophone throws up so much that is unexpected, and indeed unknowable, that the problem he faces is how to keep pace with his own invention' --The Wire, Best Albums Of The Year."
