GEZAN ?(KLUE) LP
Clear red vinyl. "In 2020, in Tokyo, a city that continues to loop between demolition and reconstruction, this is the rebel music that should be also called as the 2020 version of Pink Floyd's tribal insanity, all created at 100 BPM, under the theme of people who keep taking dance steps forever. The cover photo of the album features a 'Hyottoko Dance' by Ai Iwane, who is winner of the 2019 Kimura Ihei Photography Award. Recording & mixing engineer is Mr. Naoyuki Uchida who is the master of DUB. He is now live engineer of GEZAN. This is the fifth full album of the mutant band GEZAN, recorded at Red Bull Studios Tokyo."

POWELL on the feet of a wind LP
on the feet of a wind is a wild assemblage of carbonated synthetic music from Powell and a sister record to flash across the intervals (AF 018LP) and multiply the sides -- two albums already released in 2020. Recalling Xenakis, Parmegiani, and Hecker but with the smile/smirk of vintage Powell, the record is released via a folder, a new music and film platform created by Powell, Michael Amstad and Marte Eknæs that bundles up music, film, image, text and other forms of madness into folders that are shared/expanded online. The release is accompanied by a "Hi-sensitive" film directed by Amstad and Eknæs entitled "flares, currents". The film contains a recombined live version of "rise, world unfold", the musical series that concludes this album. a folder is a collection of disorienting works of experimental film, ambiguous texts, and other assorted media set to the most brazenly strange and formlessly mesmerizing musical structures of Powell's career. It's also a work of artistic assemblage, without fixed notions of time. Tarkovsky once described his filmmaking as "sculpting in time," and a folder exists in a similar kind of "zone;" it is a project continuously added to, subtracted from, abstracted, and injected into the glut of cyberspace like a slow-moving pathogen that refuses to be defined or categorized. Shunning titles in favor of oblique category markers, films like a?34 present a mosaic of images of biological forms and sublime landscapes set to super-synthetic, carbonated compositions. All of this signals an artist liberated from the confines of the narrow branding signifiers an electronic musician can find themselves in. While it is aware of its place in cyberspace, this project also connects to something primordial and awesome. "Xenakis talked about creating universes with sound," says Powell, "and we are all free to create our own worlds in life, art -- whatever. This is what happened to me in a way: I have been in this world for three years or something, and I don't really want to leave. The folder is a refuge. "Endlessly strange and formlessly mesmerizing" --The Quietus.

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE Take It from the Man 2LP
2021 repress. Originally released on CD in 1996, now reissued on A Recordings, Anton Newcombe's own record label. Released on 180 gram vinyl. The Brian Jonestown Massacre's obsession with the Rolling Stones continues unabated on the brilliant Take It from the Man!; where the group resurrected psychedelic-era excesses on the previous Their Satanic Majesties' Second Request, here they jump further back in time to the Stones' mid-'60s period, with even more superlative results. From the opening "Vacuum Boots" onward, Take It from the Man! is gritty, swaggering R&B-influenced rock, delivered with remarkable assurance and attitude; singer Anton Newcombe is half-madman and half-shaman, and he commands each delirious moment with absolute mastery, emerging not so much a disciple of Mick Jagger but as a serious threat to the throne.

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE Thank God for Mental Illness LP
2021 black vinyl repress; available on 180-gram vinyl (no longer comes with download code). This the first time that this title has been available on vinyl. At the risk of belaboring a rather obvious point, with Thank God for Mental Illness, their third collection of absolutely stunning music to be released in 1996, The Brian Jonestown Massacre parallels the prolific and effortless brilliance of The Rolling Stones at their fevered late-1960s peak; the sheer scope of their achievements is stunning -- rarely are bands quite so productive, or quite so consistently amazing. Thank God is The BJM's down-and-dirty country-blues outing, all 12-odd tracks supposedly recorded on a single July day at a cost of just $17.36. The Brian Jonestown Massacre is a psychedelic rock band originally from San Francisco, California, led by guitarist and singer Anton Newcombe. Since 1995, The Brian Jonestown Massacre has released numerous albums, first for Bomp!, the label that gave them their start, and later for TVT and Tee Pee. The BJM has been essential in the development of the modern U.S. garage scene, and many LA and SF musicians got their start playing with Newcombe, including Peter Hayes of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Originally, Newcombe was heavily influenced by The Rolling Stones' psychedelic phase -- the band's name combines the name of Stones founder Brian Jones with a reference to cult leader Jim Jones -- but his work in the 2000s has expanded into aesthetic dimensions approximating the UK shoegaze genre of the 1990s and incorporating influences from world music, especially Middle Eastern and Brazilian music.

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE The Brian Jonestown Massacre LP
2021 repress. 180 gram, black vinyl; superb deluxe packaging. The Brian Jonestown Massacre burst into 2019 with the release of their 18th full-length album, just seven months after their last one, Something Else (AUK 043CD/LP). The self-titled, nine-track album is released on Anton Newcombe's A Recordings, and it was recorded and produced at Anton's Cobra Studio in Berlin. The album was originally going to be released in September of 2018, but due to a hugely successful global tour -- taking in USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Europe -- the release was delayed. Recorded in early 2018, the album features Sara Neidorf on drums, Heike Marie Radeker (LeVent) on bass, Hakon Adalsteinsson (BJM, Third Sound, Gunman, Holy Ghost) on guitar, and Anton Newcombe on multiple instruments. Also making a guest vocal appearance on "Tombes Oubliées" is Rike Bienert who has sung on previous BJM albums. The band performed songs from the album throughout the European leg of the 2018 tour. Anton Newcombe has been a very busy man over the past few years, having released four critically-acclaimed Brian Jonestown Massacre albums and an EP, one soundtrack album, and two albums with Tess Parks. All releases were fully recorded and produced at Anton's studio. The Brian Jonestown Massacre track "Bon Bon" was used in the 2015 Palm D'Or winner Dheepan. Anton penned the soundtrack for Moon Dogs, a film directed by multi-BAFTA nominated Philip John (Svengali, Downton Abbey, Being Human).

CREMATION LILY The Processes And Instruments Of Normal People LP
Limited vinyl edition of Cremation Lily's second album. Originally released as a double cassette on his Strange Rules label in 2017, The Processes And Instruments Of Normal People forms a trilogy of albums in the CL canon that were influenced by the life and atmospheres within British coastal towns. Composed using a rudimentary set-up of synth, drum machine, and two modified Walkmans, CL draws upon a broad range of influences from the underground electronic music spectrum. Noise, tape music and ambient techno are referenced and align in a cohesive collection of tracks, flowing fluidly in sequence. Melancholic synth pads and deep kick drums intersect with crude field recordings and occasional bursts of feedback, evoking an uncertain claustrophobia. More like being pulled under than carried above. Features additional piano and violin by Theodore Cale Schafer, new mastering by John Hannon. Edition of 250.

GIDGE New Light 2LP
Gidge -- the Swedish duo consisting of Ludvig Stolterman and Jonatan Nilsson -- return with their new album, New Light. Marking their fifth release on Atomnation, this album can be seen as their second full-length album to date, following up 2014's mythical Autumn Bells (ATMV 023LP). Gidge makes electronic music that is shaped by recordings of Swedish nature. It's both comfortable on the dancefloor and in a more relaxing environment. Each and every Gidge track creates its own sense of atmosphere and emotion, whether that is nostalgia, rest, or epicness. Their work evolves naturally, often building to powerful peaks from a silent break that is tweaked with vocal samples, crackles of field recordings, and neo-classical influences. New Light features nine new tracks where Gidge worked on for about three years long. The album is signature for people that are familiar with the music from Gidge, yet, it can be seen as their most eclectic work to date. Ludvig and Jonatan refined the production technique on their new album by intensifying the sound palette with analog synthesis and crispy hi-hats. The track "Perimeter" might be the perfect example of this -- spanning over exactly ten minutes, the intensity of the synths in combination with the sharp hats throughout are absolutely fire. While often being adored by the inspiration that is drawn from the forest, nature, and the Norrlands of Sweden (and rightly so), the music of Gidge has actually been of an absolute international caliber and is listened to by people from all over the world. Gidge sold out club-tour shows in London, Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin, and Stockholm, and played their live-set to crowds on festivals in Mexico, Georgia, Canada, and Thailand. Pitchfork staffers chose Gidge amongst their favorite artists to listen to on snowy days and XLR8R readers voted Gidge to the #1 spot of "best new electronic act" in 2015. The list goes on... Rooted in the city of Umea, Sweden, Jonatan Nilsson and Ludvig Stolterman became friends through a shared love of electronic music. Includes printed inners.

TAJ MAHAL TRAVELLERS Live In Tokyo, 19th August 1974, Part One LP
Warehouse find, last copies... "Avant-garde composer and sound installation artist Takehisa Kosugi (musical director of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company) has led the Japanese avant-garde music scene since the early 1960s. In 1969 he formed the Taj Mahal Travellers, a musical collective that travelled the world in a VW minibus creating Fluxus-influenced improvised multimedia sound events. This double album (divided into two LPs), recorded live at the Nippon Columbia Studio in Tokyo in 1974, was the group's final effort before disbanding. Here Kosugi and the Travellers blend Eastern and Western instrumentation, vocal chants and electronics to create free-form psych-laden drones. This historic album is an essential and influential piece of Japanese avant rock." Part one, on clear vinyl in clear plastic sleeve with black lettering. Limited edition 500 copies.

RICHFORD & GARY STEVAN, JAY Feelings LP
Be With Records present a reissue of Jay Richford and Gary Stevan's Feelings, originally released in 1974. Since its original release on Italian label Carosello in 1974, Richford and Stevan's Feelings has been described as the greatest library record ever released more than once. It's a tough funk, street jazz masterpiece coveted for many years by collectors of all musical genres. As the story goes, these were the pseudonyms adopted by Stefano Torossi and Giancarlo Gazzani who wrote the album but couldn't use their real names on the original release for legal reasons. But Torossi himself later both clarified and confused the tale further by explaining that fellow composers and musicians Sandro Brugnolini and Puccio Roelens also worked on Feelings. Infectiously funky, deliciously melodic and with impeccable, elegant production, Feelings record is the showcase for a stunning set of compositions and arrangements and with performances that are nothing short of virtuoso. The record's first side lifts off with "Flying High", soaring brilliant and shimmering with funk licks, menacing strings, and swaggering horns. The string-drenched cop-funk of "Going Home" raises the tempo with quick-fire bass lines and killer electric guitar. "Walking In The Dark" positively drips in blaxploitation-funk drama strings and horn struts, all laced with delicate drums, velvet piano, and more filthy wah-wah. "Fighting For Life" is another funk-fueled workout built around an effortlessly relentless drum track. The loping, open drum break that guides the much-loved "Feeling Tense" is filled out by heavy bass gloss, swirling strings, and ominous horns. "Running Fast" is a fine rollicking chase theme underpinned by frenetic (yet funky) Fender Rhodes and skipping bass and drums. "Loving Tenderly" envelops you in warm, velvety night-time vibes with easy listening horns and slinky strings. The pace picks up on the electrifying "Fearing Much" where strings dart around deep bass, buzzing guitars, and another funky drum break. The lush, melancholic "Being Friendly" is another easy beauty, all warm Rhodes and strings. The climactic "Having Fun" rides a pulsating, bass-heavy drum break with snatches of a funky guitar refrain, some luxurious keys, sweeping strings, and triumphant horns. Groove-laden bass, irrepressible horns, sweet flute lines, warm Rhodes, lush string arrangements, blaxploitation-styled wah-wah guitars and more make Feelings one of the finest instrumental soul LPs of the '70s, if not of all time. Remastered for vinyl by Simon Francis and cut by Pete Norman. Remastered from the original tapes.

SCHNITZLER, CONRAD Paracon (The Paragon Session Outtakes 1978-1979) LP
LP version. "Conrad Schnitzler is incredible. I would dearly have loved to meet him, to have been present when he, Seidel and Baumann were working their magic at Paragon Studio. Fortuitously, Wolfgang Seidel, co-author of these pieces, has opened up his archive of recordings to the Bureau B label. He and Conrad Schnitzler spent many years together experimenting with sound, capturing the results on the two Consequenz albums, amongst others. I had the honor of meeting Wolfgang Seidel at the Golden Pudel Club during the 2018 Eruption Festival. Ken Montgomery, who worked with Schnitzler in New York towards the end of the 1980s, was also there. The concerts and performances were hauntingly powerful, infused with the spirit of Schnitzler's music and utopian vision. These entirely instrumental recordings were created in the late 1970s at Peter Baumann's Paragon Studio. In my opinion, this stellar period gave rise to the finest works: the Con (BB 350CD/LP), Consequenz (BB 121CD/LP), and Con 3 (BB 122CD/LP) albums, featuring such wonderful pieces as "Fata Morgana", "Coca", and "Auf dem schwarzen Kanal". These recently discovered pieces take the aforementioned albums a stage further. Sounds complement each other as they are reprised, whilst continuing to exist in their own cosmos. As you listen, you feel as if you have been transported back into the studio itself while the sessions are happening. One surprise follows another -- the third track sounds like clocks ringing at a pitch which only a bat could really hear. Numbers '5' and '6' are not so far removed from abstract techno tracks by Jeff Mills, albeit with rather more swing, floating in upper tone sequences reminiscent of the American composer Conlon Nancarrow. Nr. '8' is an absolute dream/wave piece, sounding like a relation of the (then) emerging Throbbing Gristle project. The tenth piece is my personal favorite, evoking a wave-romantic atmosphere which might lead you to believe that Conrad Schnitzler had been listening to The Cure. Schnitzler is electronica in its purest sense. He succeeds in rendering the unconscious audible. This goes far beyond 'music to listen to', it is music which works on different levels, music to move you." --Richard von der Schulenburg

VON DER SCHULENBURG, RICHARD Moods & Dances 2021 CD
"Revered Hamburg musician, synthesist and DJ RVDS joins the Bureau B ranks with the meditative and mellifluous sounds of Moods & Dances 2021 -- a musical present from the future past. Inspired by the otherworldly exotica and imaginative electronics of library music's golden age, Richard von der Schulenberg conjures palm trees and pyramids, promenades, and portals, all observed from the heart of a Holodeck. Seven of nine tracks are named after the equipment used to create them, offering an additional journey through the patch bay-mayhem of the RVDS home studio, and paying homage to the tonal nuance among his collection. Now, whether he's atop Mt. Acid with a molten 303, caressing tender Fender keys through an improvised jazz set or live scoring some stage-based theatrics, Richard's music always offers an immersive experience, but perhaps never more directly than this latest opus. We wash up on the digital shoreline of 'Mrs Yamaha's Summer Tune', sparkling with salt water and the shimmer of polished mallets and subtle percussion. 'Caravan of the Pentamatics' heads inland through the tree line, carving a silk road through Ethiopian jazz tones and snaking rhythms until it encounters the mystical presence of "The Farfisa Sphinx". Cryptic melodies float a top a bed of spheric bass, intangible and irresistible until they fade into the sand storm. The gentle and jazzy 'Roland's Night Walk' provides a little rest from the desert deities, though distant gunshot and the unceasing cicadas add tension to the moonlit majesty of those delicate keys. The dawn brings heartbreak via the dewy melodies and tonal malady of Richard's DX7, but somewhere someone's dancing to the propulsive bassline, eerie vocals and Arabesque sounds of 'The Space Pentas', a little cosmic boogie which just builds and builds. But dervish whirls are thirsty business, so it follows you should take a drink break at the 'Wersimatic Space Bar', a sophisticated kind of cantina awash with exotica. Then the boogie is back for the penultimate track, a deranged, demented and diabolical bit of commune chaos brought back from 'Planet Dragon', and translated into a Radiophonic workout. Parting is such sweet sorrow on any planet, and 'The End (Lala)' captures the sentiment superbly, serving space sirens, somnolent bass sounds and bursts of static at a stately tempo. Though Library inspired, and undoubtedly indebted to the hardware in action, this intriguing intergalactic trip is more passionate than a pastiche; playful, poetic and enigmatic in true RVDS fashion." --Patrick Ryder

MAPSTATION My Frequencies, When We CD
"... My Frequencies, When We is the eighth Mapstation album Stefan Schneider has released since 2000. Hailing from Düsseldorf, the electronic music artist and producer finds inspiration in African and South American folklore, dub, and, naturally, krautrock, taking his time to process his responses in a consistently thoughtful manner, never resorting to cliché. He has also found time to pursue other projects in recent years, one with electronic music pioneer Hans-Joachim Roedelius for example (2011), another with visual artist Katharina Grosse (2017), whilst continuing to release interesting music from a variety of musical spheres on his own Tal label. Recorded between March and August of 2020 in Corona-induced isolation, there is a sonic homogeneity to My Frequencies, When We. For the first time in years, guest musicians are conspicuous by their absence. Schneider himself assumes vocal duties on 'The City In'. He has also pared down his equipment list: an analog tape loop device, Roland 808 drum machine, Novation Peak synthesizer, a guitar. Schneider thus sticks to the philosophy he revealed to an interviewer this summer: 'Simplification of the means is something I strive for. I have come to realize that my music loses intensity when I add in too many elements...' 'Intensity' does not necessarily translate into 'danceability'. Yes, there are hypnotic African grooves on 'Flute Channels' and the ingeniously rhythmic, imaginary world music of 'Taro Zing Ta' has much in common with Jon Hassell, Marja Ahti or DJ Residue, but these do not reflect the full spectrum. For the most part, the rhythms are as rudimentary as those found in folklore, tottering and stumbling along. There are gentle reminders of kraut-elektronik (Conrad Schnitzler, Cluster, Neu!) and discrete reconfigurations, with the aural current of the Rhineland flowing nearby. 'Outside Arendt' presents two parallel worlds in which synth melodies and crude beats are destined ne'er to meet; the same is true of the musical box frequencies and basic rhythm of 'Train Of Gerda' or the poetic juxtaposition of idyll and concrete on 'Actual Possible': each instrument goes at its own pace, MIDI connections do not lead to synthesis. This is music for the digital diaspora, mystical, sweeping frequencies, performed reductively. In its finest moments Mapstation succeeds in crafting minimal-kraut-elektronik which runs as deep as it floats on high. Electronic house music one might say, at once homely and strange." --Olaf Karnik

COMA WORLD Coma World LP
Coma World is a new collaboration between Maxwell Hallett, aka Betamax (The Comet Is Coming, Soccer96) and Pete Bennie (Speaker's Corner Quartet) bringing together their potent chemistry in an intoxicating debut LP. Betamax drives the duo with his signature "rhythmadelic" drum rapture as Pete elegantly pummels bass tones into an assortment of wonky pockets. Both layer on a blanket of electronic dark matter to create a sonic womb-like world laid out for the brave listener to explore. This is dub and jazz reduced to the raw fundamentals of experimentation, trance, and spontaneity. Inspired by a friend's recollections of being in a coma, the duo delves through the mysteries of consciousness and return with a striking array of colorful sound artifacts. From cosmic flushes that wouldn't sound amiss on a record by Byrd Out collaborator the late, great Andrew Weatherall, through to drowsy groove meditations and explosive eruptions, the album plays by its own rules but demands attention. The two artists sling their dirty funk through cold clouds of darkness leaving psychedelic trails of bleeping fractal spillage. The sonic experimentation is distilled through analogue studio relics followed by a rugged "all hands on deck" live mix down performance from ¼" tape. The result is a spontaneous collection of sonic debris that will be administered to willing participants through 12" vinyl format. Edition of 300.

GLASS, PHILIP Dance Nos. 1-5 3LP
"The music on Dance Nos. 1-5 was originally conceived as a three-way collaboration between composer Philip Glass, choreographer Lucinda Childs and artist Sol LeWitt. Dance received its world premiere in Amsterdam on October 19, 1979 and its New York premiere at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on November 29, 1979. Post-dating Einstein on the Beach -- Glass's 1975-76 collaboration with director Robert Wilson -- Dance was another Glass collaboration, this time with choreographer Lucinda Childs, known for her austere, a thematically exact dances, and artist Sol LeWitt, who provided a ghostly, gigantic black-and-white film for several of the piece's five sections. Dance has an abstract purity that easily earned it the label 'minimalist,' a term that Glass himself disavows but that seems appropriate, at least in this case. After Dance, Glass's music took several turns, not so much in style as in the various new contexts in which it was presented: major opera commissions and film scores led him to write for forces other than those of the Philip Glass Ensemble. At the same time, an attempt to reach a wide audience resulted in some shorter, perhaps more accessible, narrative pieces. Dance marked the blossoming of the composer's experimental work. Here, though, the music - particularly Dance Nos. '1', '3' and '5', all written for the Ensemble -- has an unforgettable exuberance that somehow speaks all at once of joyful innocence, intense erotic desire, tenderness, regret and, finally, acceptance. On the other hand, Dance Nos. '2' and '4' see Glass composing several large-scale works for solo organ; for instance, Dance No. 2 originated as a 1978 work entitled Fourth Series Part Two. This piece, later incorporated into Dance, and Dance No. '4' as well, have a more subdued, more darkly romantic quality than the work's other sections and are quite unlike anything Glass had previously written. Still, they too, with their mysterious tilts of time and key signatures, continue the exploration of polyrhythms and harmonic complexities within the context of Glass's repetitive, 'minimalist' style. The complete Dance Nos. 1-5 album is now available on vinyl for the first time in its entirety on a 3LP-set with five sides of music. The 3 LPs are housed in a heavyweight sleeve."

MAYFIELD, CURTIS Curtis (Color Vinyl) LP
Manufactured by Rhino; originally released in 1970. "The first solo album by the former leader of the Impressions, Curtis represented a musical apotheosis for Curtis Mayfield -- indeed, it was practically the Sgt. Pepper's album of '70s soul, helping with its content and its success to open the whole genre to much bigger, richer musical canvases than artists had previously worked with. All of Mayfield's years of experience of life, music, and people were pulled together into a rich, powerful, topical musical statement that reflected not only the most up-to-date soul sounds of its period, finely produced by Mayfield himself, and the immediacy of the times and their political and social concerns, but also embraced the most elegant R&B sounds out of the past." -- All Music Guide

VA Nuthin' But A She Thang LP
It is the year 2020, a year that addresses our awareness of diversity, tolerance and sustainability in an assorted, socio-cultural way. Dedicate translate this demand into music. Nuthin' But A She Thang focuses on a marginalized view of instrumental beat music. This sampler, reflects a cross-section of the international female producer scene: 14 female artists, eight countries, four continents, one language -- music! The 14 instrumentals take the listener on a musical journey, which creates a tension between classic sample sound and modern current productions. The many facets of female beat producing are presented by exclusive contributions by Ainie (DE), Aygyul (AT), Courtney Hawkins (US), Da Chick (PT), Georgia Anne Muldrow (US), Gnarly (UK), Jillesque (US), Josi Miller (DE), Julie Schatz (US), Lisa Vazquez (US), Sadiva (AUS), Saltyyyy V (DE), SOWALL (KOR), and Usagi (JP). Together with Stylefile as a cooperation-partner, Dedicate were able to persuade none other than HERA (DE). She implanted an even more artistic approach and added an exclusive art print to this piece of music. Nuthin' But A She Thang is, in the end, not only a musical project, it is a statement, it is an attitude.

VA The High Note Mento Collection 2CD
"Over the past few decades, interest in vintage Jamaican mento music has steadily grown, with the genre attracting increasing numbers of fans worldwide. Despite this development, precious little material in the style that was recorded during the seventies has seen reissue. This 2CD set aims to address that oversight by showcasing three of the most popular mento collections of the decade - all making their long overdue CD debut here. First released on Sonia Pottinger's High Note label between 1976 and 1978, King Vupp, Live At Club Caribbean and Ram Jam" highlight the respective talents of leading Jamaican performers, King Vupp, the Jolly Boys and the Prince Brothers, with the original LP track-listings bolstered by an array of relevant bonus tracks. An immensely enjoyable and enlightening listen, The High Note Mento Collection effectively demonstrates that there was considerably more to the Jamaican music scene of mid-to-the late Seventies than just roots reggae."

SLUMB PARTY Spending Money LP
Everyone's favorite herky-jerky Nottingham noiseniks Slumb Party return to blow minds once more. Maybe it's time you polished all the hard surfaces in your house and strapped on your dancing shoes, cuz once this one lands on your stereo you're gonna be pulling shapes and bouncing from the floor to the walls and back again. Last time round their influences were clear: James Chance, Minutemen, and Gang Of Four rose to the surface in a heady concoction of skronking, sax-drenched post-punk, and addictively wonky hooks. This time they're no less deliciously addictive, but the pop factor rides higher in the mix, at the cost of precisely none of their aching smarts or visceral thrill. A wheezing synth powers opener "Go To Work", with nods to the same heroes as before, but also a sense of Attractions-style power-pop appeal -- if XTC had ever attempted to refract pub rock through their angular prism while shouting "CAN YOU BUY ME A PINT", it might have felt something like this. Sound good?

GRACE SINGS SLUDGE Christ Mocked & The End Of A Relationship CD
"Recorded at El Studio by Phil Manley (Life Coach / Trans Am), mixed and mastered by Mikey Young (Total Control) and released by Empty Cellar Records -- home to [Grace] Cooper's old band The Sandwitches -- the album will be accompanied by a 32-page book of Coopers' illustrations and lyrics. There has always been a dreamy American gothic sensibility to Cooper's sound, and on Christ Mocked she continues to lean into this mood and presents us with a collection of deeply felt ballads and stories that have as much in common with Shirley Jackson as they do Karen Dalton or anything we've heard from her before. Taking the album to the studio has added some polish to Grace Sings Sludge but as these songs and stories intertwine, it's clear that Cooper is evolving her sound forward in strange and unexpected ways -- even putting her own spin on audio drama with 'The Hackers' and 'Borderlands'. This is very much the sound of an artist experimenting and pushing expectations. Beneath the surface of these songs is a lovely mystery; a whelm in the gloom; a hope and a resilience that glow and thrive in the bottomless sea. Grace Cooper plays all instruments on Christ Mocked, except drums and piano on 'Horror for People That Don't Like Horror' played by Nic Russo/Dick Stusso." --Glenn McQuaid (Tales From Beyond the Pale)

GRAVITE Gravite LP
"The world has a way of tethering one down with its turmoil but there are keys to float free. It sometimes takes an equal and opposite reaction to snuff out the madness. Whether one's destination is far out or deep within, a spark is needed to set these moves in motion. Thankfully, Gravité are here to help. Their heavy vision and sounds light the path and give weight to release. For Gravité's self-titled debut album on Empty Cellar Records, synthesizer voyagers Matthew Riley and Aaron Diko have plugged in to get the vibratory field humming into infinite vision mode. These eight tracks -- performed on a collection of classic and reissued analog equipment: Juno 60, Prodigy, Mono/Poly, Minimoog, SH-01A, MS20, Minilogue, Volcakeys, TR-08 -- are an introduction to a new creative collaboration. This is portal music for mortal metamorphosis, shaped and reshaped via endless improvisation and perhaps some psychedelics. So, when the whirlwind world gets you blitzed out, it's time to bliss out. Gravité will set you soaring." For fans of Neu!, Cluster, Ralf and Florian, Suzanne Ciani, J.D. Emmanuel, Terri Riley.

COOL GHOULS At George's Zoo LP
LP version. "Cool Ghouls -- a band fledged in San Francisco on house shows, minimum wage jobs, BBQs in Golden Gate Park and the romance of a city's psychedelic history turns ten this year. What better a decennial celebration than the release of their fourth album, At George's Zoo! Fortunately for everyone, the Ghouls got an album in before everything went to shit, and they made it count. This release includes fifteen of the twenty-seven tunes they managed to eke out while simultaneously working through major life moves. It was a five-month, all out, final sprint down the homestretch with affable engineer Robby Joseph, at his makeshift garage studio in the Outer Sunset (pictured on the cover). This is a fully realized Cool Ghouls album. It paints a remarkable portrait of these SF homegrown heroes and the many corners they've explored over the last decade. The songwriting, harmony and playing are solid and the lyrics are keen. Joseph's recording and mixing sound great start to finish and even better after mastering by Mikey Young. It's a triumphant addition to their catalogue. Recommended for Stooges and Beach Boys fans alike. Listen and see!"

SEX TIDE Ohio LP
"What's round on the ends and high in the middle? Why, the new LP by those proud Buckeyes, Sex Tide, of course. Ohio is the first album they've recorded with a full quartet line-up. Bassist Phillip Park and saxophonist Ryan Mcauley join the core duo (drummer/vocalist Aurelie Celine and guitarist Chris Corbin) to create a new fat-ass sound that continually conjures up visions of the 1970 Stooges. As with the previous Sex Tide LPs we've done -- Possession Sessions (FTR 325LP, 2017) and Flash Fuck / Vernacular Splatter (FTR 436LP, 2019) -- a lot of the vibes here are generated by Aurelie's relentless pounding and reckless vocals, along with Chris's truly unhinged guitar. With Park's bass holding things down in an entirely new way, and Mcauley's alto wailing for the ghost of Steve Mackay, Celine and Corbin are allowed the freedom to go even further out than usual. And this is a challenge neither of them can pass up. The new width of Sex Tide's sonic contextualism is evident from the start. 'Everything That Happens in the Dark' is outlined by blasted saxophone lines and riven down the middle by a bass line as thick as the trunk of a Buckeye (the state tree of Ohio.) And if the start of 'State Medical Board' doesn't make you think of a Funhouse-era remake of 'Real Cool Time,' you better sit down and have a cold compress. Once your bean is chill, you might well be able to appreciate the wildly crunching ebb and flow of the four tunes on side one. It's a massive event. And the flip is even more amazing, if you ask me. Over a bottom resembling the one created when the Cramps broke open the bones of Bo Diddley and Link Wray, things start with a freaked-out blues wail, before lurching into a something like a distended re-imagination of 8-Eyed Spy's version of Nancy Sinatra's 'Lightning's Girl.' The music just goes on riffing and wiggling from there, and the whole side flows together like a hot lava sundae from the volcano of your choice. And 'experts' may tell you the last volcanic activity in Ohio was back in the Devonian Period, but I suggest you fuck both them and the horse they rode in on. Ohio is nothing if not a large scale and very molten happening." --Byron Coley

MONOSHOCK Runnin' Ape-Like From The Backwards Superman: 1989-1995 2LP
Limited 2021 repress . Just what you need in these end times -- Cardinal Fuzz (Europe) and Feeding Tube Records (N. America) -- a vinyl issue of the killer CD comp that SS Records released way back in 2004 with a couple of added treats. Brace yourself for some stellar hair-singeing, full-throttle wipe outs across four slabs of heavy black vinyl. Monoshock was one of the best bands of the '90s and if they were from Seattle and not Illa Vista and Oakland, California you would already know that. During their six years they released a handful of 7"s, served as a backing band for Von Lmo, and created one of the classic psych albums of all time, Walk to the Fire (1996). In the last few years, they received praise from around the globe, raved up by Julian Cope as one of the great unknown bands of the '90s and cited as an influence by current heavy favs, Comets on Fire, as well as a whole slew of Japanese psych bands. Monoshock is fuzz-fuel, wah-wah damaged, riff-crazed punk rock which draws in Hawkwind, the Stooges, Simply Saucer, and other psych-punk gods. This double-LP collects all their 7"s and comp tracks together with seven previously unreleased tunes and two songs from their ultra-rare 1989 demo tape and two added digi bonus live tracks from their reunion shows. Fans will be overjoyed. Virgins will become fans. The band's stellar Walk to the Fire has been acknowledged as one of the classic psych albums of all time. Comes with a folded A3 double sided insert.

KLEISTWAHR This Is Not My World/Over Your Heads Forever 2LP
Fourth Dimension present a reissue of two critically acclaimed and now sought-after albums from Kleistwahr, This Is Not My World and Over Your Heads Forever, originally released as CDs on Fourth Dimension Records in 2014 and 2016, respectively. Kleistwahr is the ongoing solo endeavor of Gary Mundy of Ramleh. Similar to the group itself, the music explores vast and often searing swathes of sound, sometimes tempered to a more atmospheric approach and at others cranked to the kind of levels bleeding ears make for a perfectly natural response. Typically uncompromising and often confrontational, this is music that doesn't adhere to any notions of comfort for too long. Remastered to help with the overloaded dynamics for the express purpose of this release, all fourteen tracks are unforgiving in their creating an abrasive psychedelic setting that still draws heavily from Gary's roots as a power electronics originator and wonderful for getting lost in. This is sonic self-flagellation at its absolute finest, once again compounding who still wears the brightest crown on this particular throne. Edition of 200.

All three LPs come in a gatefold sleeve and the whole set is rounded by a LP-size, 16-page brochure including tons of unreleased pictures and extensive liner-notes plus rare bonus tracks.Chris Eckman, Ljubljana 2020: "Carla and I had played a handful of duo acoustic shows in Europe during the winter of 1993 as a way to promote the New West Motel album. On that short run of shows, we recorded the concert in Hamburg and that became the Shelter for an Evening record. I guess the idea of Chris & Carla as a studio recording entity came of out of that low-key start. Our debut studio endeavor Life Full of Holes, was never supposed to have been an album. We had originally planned to make an EP with the esteemed Seattle producer Steve Fisk known for his work with many of the bands we had come up through the clubs with . . . At the end of our Moroccan journey we stopped back in London for a one-day session with the Tindersticks. They had become friends and pretty much our favorite band ever since they had asked Carla to duet on their classic song 'Travelling Light' the year before . . . Carla had brought an unstable stomach back from North Africa and she had to stop the session a few times to wrestle with that. The condition gave her voice a dark, dusty texture. She liked the effect and, in the end, didn't want to re-sing 'Velvet Fog' and 'Take Me,' the George Jones song that she did as a duet with the band's singer Stuart Staples . . . The two subsequent Chris & Carla albums were both made in a similar sprit. They relied heavily on serendipity. Raw trust. An Eno-like faith that if you invest on the front-end in atmosphere and context and choosing the right people to work with, you will end with something intriguing. We never did rehearsals with any of the musicians that played on those records. First reactions and intuition were the governing ideas. On Swinger 500 we used drum machines and programmed beats for the first time and brought in modular synths, horns, strings and banjos to add hues and textures on top. It still one of my favorite recording projects ever . . . A decade forward and a continent away we assembled in Ljubljana to record Fly High Brave Dreamers. We cut the album in two halves. At first, we worked in a small room on a laptop -- sculpting songs more than playing them. And then we decamped to a basement studio on the edge of town, for a live-tracking sessions that included a supple Slovenian rhythm section..."

BEACH, MICHAEL Dream Violence CD
"Dream Violence, Michael Beach's fourth full-length, is an epic album that explores the duality of the human condition. Or, as Beach himself puts it, the album is about 'human futility, passion, desire, anger, frustration, and the struggle to maintain hope in a somewhat hopeless time.' Dream Violence, then, addresses the existential crisis of being an artist in 2020 (and 2021). Known for his work touring with the Australian guitar pop band Thigh Master and the late, brilliantly eccentric Israeli guitarist Charlie Megira, currently the focus of a number of reissues by the Numero Group, Beach is the architect of a sound that is both well-built and ramshackle, straightforward and indeterminably complex, out of the norm yet familiar in all the best ways. This album unfolds like a revelation, filled with sonic tumbleweeds that reference Neil Young's On The Beach, Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska, the Velvet Underground's Loaded, and the Go Betweens' Before Hollywood. Influences ranging from the enigmatic outlier Megira to Glenn Branca to the Oblivians are combined to create a new, exhilarating sound, part of the path that Beach has been on since 2008's Blood Courses. A veteran of year-end indie rock round-ups beginning with Golden Theft in 2013 and continuing with Gravity/Repulsion, released in 2017, Beach distills the best of those early albums and adds sharpened intent."

KABRA AND ZAKIR HUSSAIN, BRIJ BHUSHAN The Magic of Music - Guitar and Tabla LP
Reissue of Brij Bhushan Kabra and Zakir Hussain's The Magic of Music - Guitar and Tabla, originally released in 1982. In the 1920s, Tau Moe (pronounced mo-ay), a Hawaiian musician, arrived in India and introduced Hawaiian music to the sub-continent. After settling in Calcutta in the early 1940s, Moe and his family performed, taught and introduced Hawaiian music by building and selling guitars to the local musicians. Indian filmmakers and composers quickly fell under the spell of these instruments and sounds and made them suitable for playing ragas -- the melodic patterns and modes in traditional Indian compositions. Soon these hot-rod guitars were accepted as legitimate instruments for performing Indian classical music, and a new breed of virtuosos emerged to write yet another chapter of the guitar's unpredictable evolution. Brij Bhushan Kabra was one of the Indian musicians who heard the steel guitar's siren call, but his vision went beyond adapting Hawaiian sounds to popular music. Instead, he saw the instrument's potential for playing ragas. To pursue this dream, Kabra began studying with Ali Akbar Khan, whose fretless sarod offered a sonic example for Kabra to emulate with his lap-slide guitar. Kabra's instrument was a Gibson Super 400, modified with a drone string and a high nut to raise the strings off the fretboard like a lap steel. Seated on the floor in the traditional style of Indian musicians, Kabra played his guitar horizontally, using a fingerstyle plucking technique and a bar to contact the strings. His approach set the standard for virtually all Indian slide guitarists. He is rightfully considered a master musician and regarded as one of Indian classical music's most renowned ambassadors' to the rest of the world. Guitar and Tabla was originally released in 1982. NUBACK When The Party Is Over/Heartbeat Summer 7"
"Growing Bin say sayonara to summer with these bittersweet Balearic gems from Japan's Nuback. Emotional pop and daydream dub to make you feel younger than yesterday. While the Discogs hipsters hastily hunt down the last, lost street soul OGs, Growing Bin choose instead to indulge in a little Nuback swing. Enlisting the talents of Tokyo's Dai Nakamura, Hamburg's home for sensitive sounds provide a much-needed vinyl release for the misty-eyed 'When The Party Is Over' and 'Heartbeat Summer'. Largely operating through his own Too Young Records, Nuback trades in textured soul, sympathetic synthesis and forlorn funk -- a master at making you move while breaking your heart. Back in 2013, he waved 'Goodbye To Summer, Again', giving a digital release to these two tracks, which lurked a little low for the radar until Dai and Basso met somewhere beyond the algorithm, soon bringing this release to bloom. Opening with a fanfare of featherlight pads and full-bodied bass, 'When The Party Is Over' is pure sonic seduction, holding both Balearic boogie and city pop in a tender embrace. Delicate guitar and sparkling sequences tug the heartstrings with nostalgic beauty, and Dai's smooth vocals are made to make you swoon. Emotional pop at its finest folks. On the B-side, 'Heartbeat Summer' drops the tempo and soaks up the sun, losing its cares in a haze of loved up dub. As soulful keys sink into spring reverb and steam kettle synths ride a rolling bassline, this downbeat delight lays back in the long grass, making shapes from the clouds and sipping a cool koshu. For summer lovers everywhere; A facemask ruins a first kiss, so start your romance right with Nuback." --Patrick Ryder

SHEPP, ARCHIE Fire Music LP
Originally released in 1965. 2019 reissue. "One of forward-looking tenor man Archie Shepp's definitive early albums, 1965's Fire Music set the tone for much of what was to come over the next several years, both in Shepp's own career and in the jazz scene as a whole. Moving far beyond bebop toward more avant-garde realms, Fire Music was simultaneously a central document of the mid-'60s 'New Thing' school of jazz and an arrow that pointed towards the subsequent explorations of Cecil Taylor, Ornette Coleman, et al. The title refers to an African ceremony, and there's an urgency here that's fueled by the civil rights unrest of the day and aimed towards the burgeoning Black Power movement, both of which would remain key jazz subtexts for some time. Fire Music is far from the first free jazz album; Coleman and others had already experimented with free-form improvisation before this. But it subverts the conventions of the bebop generation thoroughly, turning melodies and harmonies both inward and outward upon themselves, throwing open the doors to open-ended structures and tonal experimentation. Even the "straight" tunes interpreted here are given a funhouse-mirror treatment, stretching them beyond expectations. Just as psychedelia expanded rock's palette in the '60s, so Shepp's Fire Music helped broaden the possibilities of jazz." --Jim Allen (All Music Guide)

MINGUS, CHARLES Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus LP
Originally released in 1964; 2019 reissue. "Having completed what he (and many critics) regarded as his masterwork in The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, Charles Mingus' next sessions for Impulse found him looking back over a long and fruitful career. Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus is sort of a 'greatest hits revisited' record, as the bassist revamps or tinkers with some of his best-known works. The titles are altered as well -- 'II B.S.' is basically 'Haitian Fight Song' (this is the version used in the late-'90s car commercial); 'Theme for Lester Young' is 'Goodbye Pork Pie Hat'; 'Better Get Hit in Your Soul' adds a new ending, but just one letter to the title; 'Hora Decubitus' is a growling overhaul of 'E's Flat Ah's Flat Too'; and 'I X Love' modifies 'Nouroog,' which was part of 'Open Letter to Duke.' There's also a cover of Duke Ellington's 'Mood Indigo,' leaving just one new composition, 'Celia.' Which naturally leads to the question: With the ostensible shortage of ideas, what exactly makes this a significant Mingus effort? The answer is that the 11-piece bands assembled here (slightly different for the two separate recording sessions) are among Mingus' finest, featuring some of the key personnel (Eric Dolphy, pianist Jaki Byard) that would make up the legendary quintet/sextet with which Mingus toured Europe in 1964. And they simply burn, blasting through versions that equal and often surpass the originals -- which is, of course, no small feat. This was Mingus' last major statement for quite some time, and aside from a solo piano album and a series of live recordings from the 1964 tour, also his last album until 1970. It closes out the most productive and significant chapter of his career, and one of the most fertile, inventive hot streaks of any composer in jazz history." --Steve Huey (All Music Guide)

LOBO, JOAO Simorgh CD
Early summer 2019, João Lobo started recording his compositions at les Ateliers Claus in Brussels, with guitarist Norberto Lobo, bassist Soet Kempeneer, and recording engineer Christophe Albertijn. The recording sessions were planned over the course of one week, however the job was mostly done in just a few takes. With the addition of some overdubs, the whole process was finalized in a spontaneous wave. It is too simplistic to define Joao Lobo's compositions with one term, and the association of the album Simorgh with this ingenious partnership's new creations, is inevitable. While the mix of genres and styles may be easy to distinguish, the focus centers on the result of the mixing: a highly grooving and an occasionally paused and introspective music that seems out of time and out of space. It is difficult to grasp or define a specific period in time or a geographic origin in this fusion of references, as what you listen to is a bold creation of original and surprising elements. Drummers -- such as João Lobo -- employ a multi-layered concept in their music, weaving the different tracks into a linear wash of sound. He plays the song with the drum set while the other members fly in and out of the compositions, always gathering around their phoenix in order to attain enlightenment. What João Lobo and many of his contemporaries are up to, can be explained through simple terms as a future exploration of the emotionally expressive possibilities of sound. It breaks away from the conventional order providing space for the discovery of a new order. Simultaneously it allows a more profound and broader expression of what the current reality of music is and represents. It was instantly clear for me that we had to share his music with our audience and create this medium for happiness. This release is the trio's debut record, which is the impetus for their personal development in the realization that features João as a mentor in the creation process. The featured compositions highlight the musicians' unique physical aspect to control their instruments and their hidden techniques that underlying these tracks. The result is an ongoing aural interplay. It was love at first sound. This album is a co-release between Les Albums Claus and Shhpuma.

2021 restock; 2003 release. Originally released on Lovely Music in 1998. Double CD of all five of Elaine Radigue's songs in tribute to the Tibetan saint and poet from the 11th century. Two of the tracks dates from Radigue's first release in 1983, two are previously unreleased and the final 62-minute track was previously issued as a sole CD in 1987. The material is performed by Radigue (synthesizer and recording), Robert Ashley (English voice), and Lama Kunga Rinpoche (Tibetan voice). Radigue was born in France and has studied under Pierre Shaeffer and Pierre Henry; her music has an extremely organic and mystical electronics vibe, and has been previously documented on Phill Niblock's XI label, as well as Metamkine and Lovely. Milarepa is a great saint and poet of Tibet who lived in the 11th century. Through years dedicated to meditation and related practices in the solitude of the mountains, Milarepa achieved the highest attainable illumination and the mental power that enabled him to guide innumerable disciples. His ability to present complex teachings in a simple, lucid style is astonishing. He had a fine voice and loved to sing. When his patrons and disciples made a request or asked him a question, he answered in spontaneously composed free-flowing poems or lyric songs. It is said that he composed 100,000 songs to communicate his ideas in his teachings and conversations.

SANTTANA, LUCAS Sem Nostalgia LP
First ever vinyl pressing outside of Brazil. Originally released in 2011. A modern electro-acoustic masterpiece of acoustic guitars and voices featuring Arto Lindsay. Equal parts Tom Zé and Thom Yorke, Lucas Santtana is one of Brazil's most interesting, dynamic and experimental singer-songwriter/producers. He is the first artist signing to new UK-based Brazilian record label Mais Um, who's much-acclaimed debut release Oi! A Nova Musica Brasileira charted a sonic snapshot of the most exciting new Brazilian music. With the help of long-term songwriting partner Arto Lindsay, Lucas has breathed new life into the Brazilian music institution that is "voz e violão." To achieve different sonic results, the tracks were co-produced by Lucas and collaborators. Berna Ceppas is responsible for the atmospheric and minimalist mood of "Nature #1 In Mi Maior" and "Hold Me In," where the noise of a missed note echoes through the space, as if on purpose. "Who Can Say Which Way" was produced by Chico Neves, and so was "Ripple Of The Water," recorded late at night, inside the woods of Rio De Janeiro's Botanical Gardens. Gustavo Lenza and Lucas Martins produced the sound collages of "Super Violão Mashup" while "king-of-the-mash-up" DJ João Brasil produced the sounds for the frenetic "Violão De Mario Bros." Buguinha Dub lent his effects to "Amor Em Jacumã" and "Cira, Regina E Nana," as did Rica Amábis in "Recado Pro Pio Lobato." Arto Lindsay, Lucas Santtana's usual partner, co-wrote "Hold Me In," "I Can't Live Far From My Music" and the beautiful, '70s-infused "Night-Time In The Backyard." When the concept overshadows the music, a conceptual record can be in danger of needing an instruction booklet in order to make any sense, yet this is not a threat here. Sem Nostalgia stands on its own, independent from the concept that built it.

FONTAINE/ARESKI, BRIGITTE Theatre Musical LP
Monster Mélodies presents Concert Théâtral, an unpublished public recording by Brigitte Fontaine and Areski Belkacem dating from 1973. Areski Belkacem and Brigitte Fontaine, major artists of the French counterculture, were often be censored or deliberately ignored by the media due to their libertarian positions. Obtaining success at a late stage, it was not until the album Kékéland in 2001 and Rue Saint Louis en l'Ile in 2004, for Brigitte Fontaine to earn gold records. At the turn of Brigitte Fontaine's career, when breaking away from the Jacques Canetti team she made new encounters. After collaboration with Jacques Higelin, she meets Areski Belkacem. She then met Pierre Barouh who supported the Fontaine/Areski duo, by producing a handful of cult albums on his label, Saravah. As well as meeting Jean Karakos, boss of the BYG label. They became the first musicians in France blending free jazz with their own musical production in recording with the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Their free music accompanies the free inventive and provocative poetry of Brigitte Fontaine. Theater remains the first passion of Brigitte, who began to perform on stage at the age of twelve in a play by Marivaux before continuing with classical repertoires Audiberti, Molière, Giono, Vian, Genet. Constantly active, Areski and Fontaine went on the most improbable tours scouring small provincial theaters, playing in prisons and psychiatric hospitals, losing themselves in confidential and financially catastrophic tours, including in Canada and in Algeria in 1970 only ten years after the conflict. The record Concert Théâtral was recorded in 1973. A year which was a turning point in the career of the duo, the two artists decided to perform on stage without musicians to accompany them and in a stripped-down staging. The songs here are all filled with the inventive and offbeat poetry of Brigitte Fontaine, accompanied by atypical music created by Areski, they appear on their various albums published between 1971 and 1973 but are here interpreted in their simpler expression, on stage, without the help of other musicians, the duo accompanying themselves on guitar, percussion, and accordion. A recital taking as much of the singing as of the theater, or happening such as the two artists produced between 1973 and 1979, in a unique way and of which it remains here the only testimony. The recording of this concert at studio 102 of the Maison de la Radio dating May 21st 1973, had been broadcasted on "France Culture" on November 2nd 1973 but remained unpublished until now. Edition of 1000 on color vinyl (numbered).

SCOTT, RAYMOND Soothing Sounds For Baby Vol. 1-3 (Orange/Yellow/Light Blue Marbled Vinyl) 3LP
"Raymond Scott was definitely in the forefront of developing electronic music technology and in the forefront of using it commercially as a musician." --Robert Moog "American composer Raymond Scott (1908-1994) had a long career as an innovator in the field of music. He formed the Raymond Scott Quintette in the 1930s, whose jazz novelties became known for their use in cartoons such as The Ren & Stimpy Show, The Simpsons and Animaniacs, as well as various films. In the 1940s, he had a big band and led the orchestra on TV's Your Hit Parade from 1950-1957. Along the way, Scott invented electronic instruments and developed pioneering studio techniques. He is considered to be at the forefront of developing electronic music technology and using it commercially, and his ambient minimalist style became a source of inspiration for musicians like Brian Eno, Robert Fripp, Steve Reich, and Philip Glass. Scott recorded Soothing Sounds for Baby in 1963 using electronic devices such as the Ondioline, homemade rhythm and tone generators, and tape echo. This series of 'aural toys' was designed for babies in three age groups (1-6 months, 6-12 months, and 12-18 months). The simple rhythms and melodies were intended to be pleasantly stimulating, while providing a quieting atmosphere of relaxation, warmth, and contentment. The Soothing Sounds For Baby have been out of print for almost over a decade. Due to high demand, Music On Vinyl in cooperation with Basta Music now release a limited edition of 750 numbered copies on coloured vinyl: orange marbled vinyl (LP1), yellow marbled vinyl (LP2) and light blue marbled (LP3) vinyl. The 3 records are housed in printed innersleeve and a thick cardboard jacket. The package includes a download coupon containing all the tracks of the albums + an insert with credits and detailed information about this extraordinary release and as a special bonus; an informative booklet by the Gesell Institute of Child Development."

SCOTT, RAYMOND Manhattan Research Inc. (Transparent Vinyl) 3LP
"Raymond Scott (1908-1994) was a renowned bandleader, composer and pianist from the 1930s to the 1950s. Many of his playful riffs, originally recorded from 1937 to 1939 by the Raymond Scott Quintette, are genetically encoded in every earthling, having covered by many artists while also being adapted for cartoons like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, The Ren and Stimpy Show, The Simpsons and Animaniacs. His Soothing Sounds for Baby (SSFB) trilogy showcased Scott as a pioneer of electronic music. His ambient minimalism ultimately became a source of inspiration for musicians like Terry Riley, Phillip Glass, Kraftwerk and Brian Eno. But SSFB couldn't prepare the world for the exotic artifacts found on Manhattan Research Inc. MRI, first issued on Basta in 2000, contains 69 tracks recorded from 1956 to 1969-over two hours' worth of Scott's ground-breaking electronic work in adult dimensions. Forays into abstract musique concrete are heard alongside film soundtrack collaborations with a young pre-Muppet Jim Henson, and pan-galactic sonics seemingly beamed down from hovering UFOs. In addition, MRI presents some of the first TV and radio commercials to feature electronic music. MRI also features many of Scott's instrumental inventions. Music on Vinyl presents a new edition of MRI in a 3-LP set, including full track notes, a historical overview, and newly designed covers. The package contains an 8-page booklet, printed innersleeves and a free download coupon for the complete album. 750 copies of MRI are individually numbered and pressed on transparent vinyl."

ALCHI Full Of It LP
Krijn Moons, aka Alchi, emerges as a new voice in instrumental electronic music with his debut Full Of It released with Mylja. Inspired by artists such as Nicolás Jaar, Boards of Canada, Sigur Rós, and James Holden, Alchi produces and performs music that is rooted in experiment rather than a single genre, flowing between and weaving through alternative dance, instrumental electronic post rock and neoclassical influences. Playing with imperfections and disarray, Alchi's work honors emotional ambiguity, cultivating a sound that can be equally euphoric as it can be melancholic, a feeling that words cannot -- and do not have to -- articulate. This is also the approach to composition and production for Full Of It, Alchi explains. "More than the sum of its parts, the sound of a song creates a space that it starts to exist in, an intangible context shaped by the details that come from zoomed-in sound design and production or even working with old or broken instruments. At a certain point, in this space that feels somewhat unknown and familiar at the same time, everything comes to life." Within this ambiguity, Alchi finds a place to liberate himself from instrumental boundaries, creating landscapes that value coincidence, playful sound choices and a little bit of chaos. Full Of It portrays an uncommon kind of music that, in its abstraction, layers, and linear structures, will balance both the familiar and the surreal. 180 gram vinyl.

AGAINST ALL LOGIC 2017-2019 3LP
Repressed. Against All Logic's 2017-2019 on Other People featuring Lydia Lunch. Side F is a vinyl-only edit."Under his Against All Logic alias, Nicolas Jaar writes music that sounds like it's trying to break out of itself. Textures undulate and basses overwhelm, while vocals flutter in and out of focus as if someone were flicking through channels on a decrepit television. The project's first LP, quietly released on his Other People label at the beginning of 2018, folded half a decade's work into one of the most accessible albums of his career. Now that A.A.L. is a known quantity, Jaar returns with 2017-2019, trading the warmer house music of his debut for a warped techno counterpart . . . 2017-2019 has been rendered more purposefully than its predecessor, each track flowing into the next. It presents an identity for Against All Logic that transcends the previous mid-tempo crowd-pleasers, one that's unafraid to draw from various club subgenres while injecting Jaar's customary washed-out tape atmospheres. The harsh spirals of noise and pneumatic hi-hats of 'Deeeeeeefers' sound like they're pulled from a revised Justice cut or Thomas Bangalter edit, while 'Penny' makes the case that 'lo-fi house' might not be dead after all. The most exhilarating moment on the album appears courtesy of its sole feature, Lydia Lunch, whose voice and philosophy Jaar borrows for 'If You Can't Do It Good, Do It Hard.' A longtime advocate of her work?he reissued her 1990 spoken-word piece Conspiracy of Women (C.O.W.) after layering clips from the recording into his live show for years-- Jaar recontextualizes the no-wave icon's uncompromising ferocity using brash distortion loops that make Yeezus sound tame by comparison." Noah Yoo at Pitchfork (7.9/10)"Techno influences echo through later on in the project, but to a different extent. The track 'Penny' mixes the tuneful sounds of lo-fi house with a heavy thumping beat that appears halfway through. The closer 'You (Forever)' brings a serene, meditative ending, the album's only real moment of calm, which seems to hark back to 2011's debut Space Is Only Noise (CCS 055-2LP). Jaar shows signs of evolving here, and it's more than welcome. For a record that feels chaotic at times, everything falls into place." -- Joe Hale at Clash Music (8/10)

KLICK & AUS Tapetopia 003: GDR Underground Tapes (1984-1989) LP
Official holidays played a role in the short but tumultuous life of the East Berlin improv-punk band Klick & Aus, beginning with Walpurgis Night in 1983 when two members of the band met for the first time: Sala Seil, saxophonist, singer and dancer, and Tohm di Roes, poet, drummer and singer. In the summer the duo was joined by bassist ToRo Klick, who had been crafting rhythms with Thom di Roes since 1982. Still nameless, the trio opened an exhibition by artist W.A. Scheffler at the private gallery "rot-grün" in Berlin's Sredzkistraße, a team of producers grouped around the brothers Erhard and Mario Monden. The noise-laden performance heralded the birth of a new band: Klick & Aus, using the bassist's surname to create a militant multilayered association. Their live debut lasted all of 15 minutes. Later performances were similarly burlesque to grotesque. New faces had also joined, including the poet Florian Günther, who soon left again, as well as Klick's wife Evolinum on fanfare and violin. Rounding out the eccentric combo in classic style was singer Pjotr Schwert, a scientist whose dream GDR "day job" was as the night porter on a railroad sleeping car. As Orwellian 1984 neared its end Tohm di Roes roamed Alexanderplatz recording the sounds of the local Christmas Market. These snippets became interludes between the songs on the cassette album AIDS delikat. Recorded with underground producer Thorsten Philipp at his studio in Berlin's Mahlsdorf district, the album melded loud shamanic chants with song structures and archaic sampling. Klick & Aus played an amalgamation of proto-punk and post-punk influenced by acts from both East and West including Galloping Coroners, Captain Beefheart, and Cabaret Voltaire. The Klick & Aus sound breathed restlessness and petulance, like a company of soldiers always simmering for battle, but refusing to march in step. Klick & Aus convened a celebration of the untamed and ecstatic, and put infantile masculinity firmly in its place. Klick & Aus wanted a high-quality production, so the band members spent their own money to avoid using the expensive lo-fi blank cassettes from the officially sanctioned ORWO company. A shortened vinyl version of the tape has been compiled for Tapetopia 003. Edition of 500.

FAMILIE HESSELBACH Familie Hesselbach LP
In other places, the New German Wave was already over by 1982. In the countryside they were always a bit behind. Particularly in the south-west of Germany, where the quiet university town of Tübingen sits like a Disney version of a German province. The late 1970s were synonymous with a left-leaning alternative scene, and it was in this climate that a bunch of renegades met. Two things united them: antipathy towards their fellow students and a desire for musical renewal. To give (post) punk meaningful direction and to present to the public the already nostalgic (perhaps only retroactively constructed) idea of pop as an agent of permanent cultural revolution, they needed bands whose confrontational performances could stir up and split student gatherings. That's what Attraktiv & Preiswert did, fronted by Ralf van Daale. The Hesselbach Family was founded by Gottfried, Axel, Claude, Frank, and Klaus Hesselbach, with Handke Hesselbach joining later. The name, taken from a TV series about a Hessian family business, placed them somewhere between wishful thinking (Ramones) and reality (the provincial backwaters). Compared to most projects, where everyone was involved in three (one group and two side projects), the Hesselbachs were a band in the old-fashioned sense. Their playing was tight, which was unusual for the New German Wave. Their co-conspirators had brilliant ideas (like Autofick and Zimt), but the Hesselbach Family really had the new possibilities at their fingertips. They had the groove of A Certain Ratio and Medium Medium, as well as the "broken jazz" of James Chance groups, and they shamelessly adopted the manifesto pop of British DIY bands and the Scottish "Postcard sound". They were even quicker than others to integrate "Zitatpop", the further development of the revolution that was underway and still largely not understood in Germany. For a long time, no one realized that it was the legacy of a scene that was small, but highly motivated in terms of content. It represents those who, between 1979 and 1983, wanted to recreate the big and exciting pop world in the sleepy regions around Stuttgart, for fun but with the necessary seriousness. German post-punk was traditionally averse to theory. It is only now, when they sound as they should have done, that you realize that the Hesselbach Family were the Talking Heads in this completely unlikely constellation. FUKUDA, KOSEI Ruten- 2LP
After two series of conceptual EPs and the intricate experimental "Enso" Festival compilation, Kosei Fukuda returns with a full-length solo project, and his debut album. This marks his thirteenth release on the Reiten label, a platform he created to showcase his techno music and a more general, experimental aesthetic agenda. As a producer and sound artist, Fukuda has shared his time between Tokyo and Berlin. The artist's energy has now been channeled toward making one coherent authorial statement capable of bringing all the strands of his musical and theoretical outlook together, while also distilling a new vision that transcends the confines of the dancefloor. It comes in the form of the generous double album entitled Ruten -- a Japanese concept whose closest Western counterpart is the ancient Greek notion of "panta rhei". Referencing Heraclitus' famous adage that "everything flows" is not just the philosophical inspiration behind the album but also the succinct aesthetic manifesto of sorts. The full-length perfectly facilitates the task of expressing this insight and reinterpreting it for a new generation of listeners. In principle, the two albums called Ruten- and Ruten+ are meant to represent the principle of ying and yang, the two elemental forces and the eternal cycle of energy. As a whole, they signify a journey from the nascent being to the eventual dissolution of everything into nothing. Yet there's still a deeper message at play: the omnipresence of patterns. Even the incessant flow of changes is patterned. In this work, Fukuda hints at an idea that a pattern is both an abstract structural quality and a concrete aesthetic value. The music contained here is a complex sonic story about the interlocking meanings of pattern and flow, and it is a meditative exploration of the human experience of this entwinement. The first volume starts appropriately with the unassuming intro "dawn" and proceeds from the investigative look at the evanescent yet tangible droplets of "mist" and on to the contemplative gaze at the most distant, unreachable constellation of "nebula". Regardless of metaphorical intent though, the music moves within one universe of downtempo, ambient, and drone, combining the palpable beats (rhythmic pattern) with the atmospheric backgrounds (harmonic flow). As is the case with all Reiten label releases, the carefully designed sonic textures and moods take precedence over traditional melodic lines. But make no mistake -- this is not a self-indulgent "free" experimentalism. Rather, it's a progression of loose but recognizable sonic shapes or figures.

HERE LIES MAN Ritual Divination LP
LP version. Four albums in, the convenient and generalized catchphrase for Here Lies Man's erudite sound -- if Black Sabbath played Afrobeat -- might seem a little played out. But Ritual Divination is perhaps the best rendering of the idea so far. Particularly on the Sabbath side of the equation: The guitars are heavier and more blues-based than before, but the ancient rhythmic formula of the clave remains a constant. 'Musically it's an opening up more to traditional rock elements,' says vocalist / guitarist / cofounder Marcos Garcia, who also plays guitar in Antibalas. 'It's always been our intention to explore. And, as we travelled deeper into this musical landscape, new features revealed themselves.' The L.A. based band comprised of Antibalas members have toured relentlessly following their breakout 2017 self-titled debut. Their second album, You Will Know Nothing and an EP, Animal Noises, both followed in 2018. Third album No Ground To Walk Upon emerged in August 2019. All of them were crafted by Garcia and cofounder / drummer Geoff Mann (former Antibalas drummer and son of jazz musician Herbie Mann) in their L.A. studio between tours. Ritual Divination is their first album recorded as the full four-piece band, including bassist JP Maramba and keyboardist Doug Organ. This album continues with an ongoing concept of the band playing the soundtrack to an imaginary movie, with each song being a scene. Musically and sonically, the album is also self-reflexive. 'On this album the feel changes within a song,' Garcia says. 'Whereas before each song was meant to induce a trancelike state, now more of the songs have their own arc built in. We're very conscious of how the rhythms service the riffs,' Garcia continues. 'Tony Iommi's (Black Sabbath) innovation was to make the riff the organizing principle of a song. We are taking that same approach but employing a different organizing principle: For Iommi it was the blues, for us it comes directly from Africa.'"

SPELLJAMMER Abyssal Trip CD
"'The vastness of everything is something that I think about a lot,' says Spelljammer bassist/vocalist Niklas Olsson. And it certainly shows in both the expansive, sludgy sounds and contemplative lyrics of the Stockholm, Sweden based trio. Following a five-year break between their previous album, Ancient Of Days -- perhaps fittingly spent pondering said vastness -- Spelljammer is back with an album that perfectly bridges the band's earlier desert rock leanings and their later massive, slow-burning riffs. Abyssal Trip (note: carefully re-read that album title) takes its moniker from the perpetually dark, cold, oxygen-free zone at the bottom of the ocean. The six song, forty-four minute album fittingly embodies that bleak realm with rumbling, oozing guitars intercut with dramatic melodic interludes. The songs take their time to unfurl, making them even more hypnotic. Likewise, the lyrics take a poetic approach to establishing the sonic scenery. The recording process for this album differs from previous releases in that the band -- guitarist Robert Sörling, drummer Jonatan Rimsbo and Olsson -- opted to capture the performances while holed up in the mental bathysphere of a house in the countryside near Stockholm. 'The songs benefitted from the relaxed environment of being away from everything,' Olsson explains. Indeed, the album sounds confident and meticulously arranged, afforded by the band's isolation. Sörling mixed the album and it was mastered by Monolord drummer Esben Willems at Berserk Audio. Abyssal Trip is, just like its title suggests, an epic tour through desolate zones which yields much to discover."

COHEN, LEONARD Live In Session '68 LP
Leonard Cohen, live in session at the Paris Theatre, Spring 1968. "Unmatched in his creativity, insight and crippling candour, Leonard Cohen was a true visionary whose voice will be sorely missed." Cohen emerged amongst a spring of acoustic troubadours from Dylan to Simon to Mitchell, but his talent lay buried beneath the commercial appeal of his fellow folk singers. No one could ever capture and put into words or song what Cohen somehow achieved, all delivered in that mesmerizing, monotone voice. Quiet and compelling with soft, sharp, and emotive undertone, his voice paints pictures like no other artist has dared to paint. Cohen's second visit to the UK in 1968 (the first being a televised appearance with Julie Felix) was staged at London's Paris Theatre in Lower Regent Street, the venue where historic recordings from the Beatles to the Stones had also been made just a few years before. Rox Vox presents Leonard Cohen at the Paris Theatre, Spring 1968. Professionally remastered original BBC2 TV broadcast with background liners and rare archival photos. First time on vinyl. FIRE! Defeat CD
Fire! tracking new paths and reaching new levels of excellence, still honoring their 12-year-old vow of presenting a fresh approach to improvised music. Their debut album, You Liked Me Five Minutes Ago, was released in 2009 to wide international acclaim. "The basic strategy of pairing the expressive energy of free jazz with a sturdy sense of groove has yielded something potent and self-contained" --New York Times. Between this and Defeat there´s been five albums, including collaborations with Jim O'Rourke (2011) and Oren Ambarchi (2012). No two Fire! records sound the same, but with Defeat they have taken their biggest leap so far, with Mats Gustafsson giving the flute a prominent place in the sound image, a surprising and most successful move, his both expressive and ornamental approach given ample room to breathe, especially on the two long tracks bookending the album. In places more subdued than on previous efforts, but with the distinctive bass figures and hypnotic mood fully intact. There are some lively stretches with guests Goran Kajfes and Mats Aleklint, bringing to mind their big band offshoot Fire! Orchestra, albeit on a smaller scale. For over 20 years Rune Grammofon have made a habit of releasing music that is beyond easy classification, in later years typified by Hedvig Mollestad, Elephant9, and Krokofant, but cemented by Fire! and their exploratory curiosity and deep love of music in general. Many have tried to compare the trio to other groups, but listening to Defeat you realize how futile this is. Given the above there´s no doubt there are many influences at play, but the resulting brew is in a class by itself. Personnel: Mats Gustafsson - flute, baritone sax, live electronics; Johan Berthling - electric bass; Andreas Werliin - drums; Goran Kajfes - quartertone trumpet; Mats Aleklint - trombone, sousaphone, horn arrangements.

ELEPHANT9 Arrival Of The New Elders CD
After a solid run of five studio albums and 2019's two double live albums, Psychedelic Backfire I and II, Elephant9 had taken their groovy mix of high energy rock and power jazz as far as they could. In this respect, Arrival Of The New Elders comes as a welcome and most timely addition to their recorded output. More varied, mature and reflective, don't let the self-ironic (?) title mislead you, they are as groovy as ever, but more structured and less jam oriented, with the longest track clocking in around the seven-minute mark. Rather short, by their standards. Having built a solid live reputation even before their brilliant 2008 debut Dodovoodoo, the trio boasts what is probably the strongest rhythm section in Norway, complemented with keyboard magician extraordinaire, the one and only Ståle Storløkken. And boy, does he excel himself on this album, notably with more focus on the Rhodes than before. That said, this is nothing if not another strong group effort from what has been a very tight unit straight from the outset. Seven brand new compositions from Storløkken and one from Nikolai Hængsle make way for what Rune Grammofon consider to be their finest and most cohesive album to date. Arrival Of The New Elders was recorded by trusted stalwart Christian Engfelt, with early Dungen producer Mattias Glavå handling the mixing duties. Ståle started his musical journey in Veslefrekk with Jarle Vespestad and Arve Henriksen in the '90s, soon morphing into Supersilent with Helge Sten on board. He's also a member of Møster! and Humcrush, and have collaborated with a number of artists, most notably Motorpsycho. Nikolai is also a member of Bigbang, Needlepoint and Band Of Gold and have appeared on a couple of hundred records. The same goes for Torstein, an associate member of numerous bands ranging from pop and soul to free jazz. But Elephant9 has always been their special baby. Personnel: Ståle Storløkken - Rhodes piano, Hammond organ, grand piano, Eminent 310, Mellotron, Continuum; Nikolai Hængsle - electric bass, electric and acoustic guitars; Torstein Lofthus - drums, percussion.

GUIDED BY VOICES Propeller CD
"Propeller was the fifth album by Guided By Voices, and was intended to be the group's last. Released as a limited edition of 500 LPs in 1992, the album featured handmade covers and blank labels to keep expenses as low as possible. Their other albums hadn't sold much, why would this one? Robert Pollard had a family to support and his musical aspirations had not exactly been a boon to their bank account. As fate would have it, the band wound up releasing an album chock full of gems Pollard had stockpiled, and for the first time sounded distinctly like the band that fans have since come to love. Propeller also marks the return of Tobin Sprout to the GBV fold, along with an increased songwriting presence. From anthem-to-be 'Over the Neptune' to the effortless melodies of closer 'On the Tundra,' Propeller is a hell of a ride, and remains one of the most important albums in the band's discography. The vinyl edition has been out of print for a decade, and features different cover art than previous pressings. The CD edition has been out of print for a minute as well, and is now housed in digipak format, also with a new, unique cover from one of the original pressings. SOMBRE, CHEVAL Time Waits for No One CD
Cheval Sombre releases his third album -- his first solo release for more than eight years, following 2018's critically acclaimed collaboration with Galaxie 500 and Luna frontman Dean Wareham, and the first of two new albums scheduled for 2021, both of which have been produced by Sonic Boom. Cheval Sombre is the nome d'arte of Chris Porpora, a poet from upstate New York whose otherworldly psychedelic lullabies on his self-titled album from 2009 and its follow-up, Mad Love (2012), won him a cult following. Time Waits for No One ushers in his most prolific period, and serendipitously the world has finally slowed down to his pace. This is no lockdown record, but Cheval Sombre's reclusive, reflective music is its perfect soundtrack. "I've always said that what I really want to do with music is to give people sanctuary," he explains. "Pandemic or not, the world has always felt as though it were spinning out of control to me, and so if folks have slowed down, I do see it all as an opportunity to discover vital realms which have always been there, but we've been too rushed and distracted to encounter." Time Waits for No One is also his finest and most fully realized body of work to date and, appropriately enough for a record that has taken so many years to come to fruition, across eight original songs, an instrumental and a closing cover of Townes Van Zandt's "No Place to Fall", its overarching theme is time itself; what it is and what role it inevitably plays in all of our lives. But the record is also timeless, contrasting the musical simplicity of Cheval Sombre's open-tuned acoustic guitar curlicues with the beautiful, sweeping and ornate arrangements of Sonic Boom's keyboards and Gillian Rivers' and Yuiko Kamakari's strings. The end result is something akin to Daniel Johnston backed by the Mercury Rev of Deserter's Songs. Elemental and earthbound, but simultaneously and very subtly shooting for the stratosphere.

GILSON, JEF Le Massacre Du Printemps LP
Souffle Continu Records present the first vinyl reissue of Jef Gilson's Le Massacre Du Printemps, originally released in 1971. In 1971, the day after the death of Igor Stravinsky, Jef Gilson, and his Unit (Pierre Moret and Jean-Claude Pourtier) made this curious homage to classical music. It is jazz, contemporary, and electroacoustic music that the trio interrogate through a wild "noise" session evoking as much John Cage as Pierre Henry, John Coltrane as the Percussions de Strasbourg, the Art Ensemble of Chicago as the Tacet by Jean Guérin. Le Massacre du Printemps, (the Massacre of Spring) is a strange kind of homage to Igor Stravinsky, who had just died when, in 1971, Jef Gilson recorded this not-to-be-missed album of French experimental jazz. "Too many pieces of music finish too long after the end," the Russian composer was quoted as saying and here is Gilson offering us... six! A funny bird (of fire) was Jef Gilson. Clarinetist who came up playing in the basement clubs with Claude Luter and Boris Vian, he turned to piano and multiplied his experiences in jazz: bebop, choral, modal, free, fusion... As a free spirit, Gilson welcomed many "up and coming" French musicians in his bands (Jean-Luc Ponty, Bernard Lubat, Michel Portal, Henri Texier...) as well as being associated with Woody Shaw, Nathan Davis, or Byard Lancaster. Later he would go on to create, Europamerica, a transatlantic formation in which Butch Morris, Frank Lowe, and Joe McPhee would play... But for the time being it's a massacre! With Pierre Moret on organ and Jean-Claude Pourtier on drums, Gilson improvises with style and gusto. On the eponymous title track of the album, he also plays tuba and invites Claude Jeanmaire to get involved on prepared piano. Spring, for the four musicians here, is windswept: billowing, rumbling, frantic, it sounds like Stravinsky played by the "Percussions de Strasbourg" without a scoresheet! After which, behind his electric piano, Gilson with Moret and Pourtier offers us five more "unpremeditated spontaneous expressions", as he wrote on the back of the album sleeve. Five wily and electric expressions which are like the soundtrack to a film which could also have been played by the Art Ensemble or Jean Guérin. Licensed from Futura / Marge. SHIHAB + GILSON UNIT, SAHIB La Marche Dans Le Desert LP
Souffle Continu Records present the first vinyl reissue of Sahib Shihab + Jef Gilson Unit's La Marche Dans Le Désert, originally released in 1972. A few months after having released Le Massacre Du Printemps (FFL 064LP), Jef Gilson was back behind his keyboards heading up his Unit. This time he was joined by Sahib Shihab. The caravan passes by, evoking, one after the other, Pharoah Sanders and Alice Coltrane, Pierre Henry and Karlheinz Stockhausen... Oh yes, Shihab's saxophone is... amplified. La Marche Dans Le Désert (The Walk in the Desert) is first and foremost the meeting of two iconoclastic musicians: Jef Gilson, pianist who tried his hand in all forms of jazz collaborating with emblematic American musicians (Walter Davis Jr., Woody Shaw, Nathan Davis...) or French musicians who were on their way to becoming so (Jean-Luc Ponty, Bernard Lubat, Michel Portal, Henri Texier...) Shihab is one of the many black American jazzmen who found refuge in Europe. After having played in the bands of Fletcher Henderson and Roy Eldridge, the saxophonist worked with Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Art Blakey and Tadd Dameron. He came to the old continent with the Quincy Jones orchestra, spent a few years in Copenhagen, returned to Los Angeles, then came back to Europe. When he met Jef Gilson, in February 1972, the saxophonist was happily touring with the Clarke-Boland Big Band. La Marche Dans Le Désert was an opportunity for this supporting player to show what he was capable of. And it was some opportunity: with Gilson and his Unit (Pierre Moret on keyboards and Jean-Claude Pourtier on drums, Jef Catoire on double bass, and Bruno Di Gioia and Maurice Bouhana on flute and percussion respectively), Shihab got maximum exposure. To mark the occasion, he put aside his baritone saxophone to play a soprano... varitone. The amplified instrument, while losing nothing of its natural sound, was capable of generating the same presence as Gilson's electronic keyboards. And it would change the face of modal jazz: in a forest of percussion, Shihab and Gilson go on a sensual walkabout that will remain with listeners for long after. Between the two takes of "Mirage", Shihab, this time on baritone again, takes up the mantle once more of a style of jazz he was unable to strictly define. Licensed from Futura / Marge. Remastered from the master tapes; Restored artwork and obi strip.

VA Keb Darge Presents Atomic Rhythm! Stag-O-Lee DJ Set Vol. 5 2LP
Double LP version. Stag-O-Lee continue the DJ Set series with a compilation by cult DJ and master of many compilations, Keb Darge. Liner notes from Keb Darge (London October 2020): "Rockabilly didn't cross my world until the early nineteen eighties at a Dirtbox weekender in Bournemouth, until then I was a pure northern soul boy. I didn't really get stuck into collecting the stuff until a decade later, but when I did what a wonderful world of tunes opened up to me, and I went wild on it. I was very lucky to be doing a record stall in Camden market at the time just across from Boz Boorer and Neil Scott's stall. They along with other serious collectors Dave Vickers, Barney Koumis, Cosmic Keith, Jim Fox, Dave Crozier, and many others taught me all I needed to know. I only ever made one great rockabilly discovery which none of them knew, 'Little Bit Lonesome' by Charles Ross, but I was happy enough buying all their recommendations as they were all new and exciting for me. I have done several rockabilly comps before, but sadly the Philippines typhoon in 2013 destroyed my village and forced me to sell the bulk of my collection. TELESCOPES, THE Song Of Love And Revolution CD
The Telescopes have been described by the British music press as "more a revolution of the psyche than a revolution of the sidewalk"; a thread consistent throughout a body of work spanning over 30 years. The Telescopes have constantly pushed at their own boundaries to unravel new pathways of existence, coloring outside the lines of all expectation to reach beyond the realm of natural vision. With a legacy full of eureka moments, intravenously fed through a crack in the cosmic egg, The Telescopes invoke the kind of altered perceptions that time has shown not only withstand repeated listening, but reveal something new whenever one ventures into the depths of their highly influential artistry. At the core of their being, The Telescopes are an all-embracing concern, in every sense, a constant revolution of the psyche exploding endless spores of sound, carriers of warm transmissions seeped in aural innovation that spiral around ones inner receptors to induce a series of auditory illusions that completely immerse the listener in the grip of their own imagination. The most revolutionary act we can all perform is to stand by our calling, to keep doing what we do, for the reasons we are conceived to do so, no matter what. Some call it "The New Weird" but call it what you will, it is born of love. The Telescopes are one of the very few artists that are living proof that this revolutionary act is possible to evolve and sustain free from artistic corruption. Songs Of Love And Revolution is a solar burst of trance inducing rhythms gripped at the helm by a wall of throbbing bass held in place by a swarm of encircling guitars. Lashed to the mast of this whirling dervish, incantations abound to dispel what is bound. This is the 12th album by The Telescopes, music for a four-piece ensemble that will never sound the same twice in any given environment or to any set of ears.

BERNICE Eau de Bonjourno LP
"Bernice is the experimental pop vessel of musician/songwriter Robin Dann and her longtime collaborators Thom Gill (keyboards, guitar), Philippe Melanson (e-percussion and drums), Daniel Fortin (bass) and Felicity Williams (voice). Together and apart, they have performed with Martha Wainwright, Andy Shauf, Lido Pimienta, Bahamas, KNOWER, and Beverly Glenn Copeland among many others, which led to them being referred in the press as 'Toronto's ever-evolving backing band.' In their own right, however, they have repeatedly proved to be far more than the sum of their considerable parts. Bernice's Polaris Prize-nominated 2018 LP Puff: In the air without a shape received major international attention, described as an 'analytical, self-dissecting monument to ephemerality' by The New York Times, and 'a fascinating musical conversation' that blends pop and R&B influences with C86 aesthetics by Pitchfork, alongside high praise from outlets like NPR, FADER, and Stereogum, and many more. Nearly three years on from that release (for Bernice a rapid turnaround by comparison to the seven-year gap between their 2011 debut and Puff), the band return with their third full-length, Eau de Bonjourno, out from Telephone Explosion and figureeight records. It marks their first collaboration with producer Shahzad Ismaily, the acclaimed multi-instrumentalist who has worked with artists as varied as Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, Elvis Costello, Iggy Pop, John Zorn, and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy. While their genre reconstruction remains distinctly Bernice, Dann's lyrics bring a newfound focus to storytelling in the present moment, compassionately meeting ourselves where we are, and finding joy in spaces that are familiar but ever changing. Eau de Bonjourno, according to Dann, 'openly plays with the shape of a pop song,' drawing on the band members' backgrounds in jazz, subverting rhythmic formulas, and resting in grooves that sit just outside of predictable. Instead of letting instruments take extended solos, the tone is set on opener 'Groove Elation' with brief blurts of synthesized sax, patient passages of space, or clusters of beats, tenderly held together by Dann and Williams' intimate vocals. The album's sound is experimental in its truest definition, chopped up like musique concrète and then delicately placed back together with the loving touch of a scrapbook collagist." --Jesse Locke

JANE INC. Number One LP
"Who is Jane Inc.? She is CEO and pencil pusher; she is a blank, unknowable Jane Doe, and she is the singular solo project of Carlyn Bezic. Also known as one half of weird-pop duo Ice Cream, one fifth of rock and roll fever dream Darlene Shrugg, and touring member of US Girls band, Bezic has been building a body of work on merging a pop sensibility with off-kilter influences. Jane Inc's debut album, Number One, out on Telephone Explosion in March 2021, is an exciting progression of that body of work: a meditation on the self that marries pop songwriting with swirling sonic experiments. The eight songs on Number One act as pieces of a collage, forming a face that's both familiar and strange, direct and oblique. Synths sneer and shimmer, fuzzed-out guitars play against Bezic's soothing and hypnotic voice, and a constant and confident bass grounds each track. She brings us into flowing, dreamlike reflections, creating an expansive world that stretches beyond the album's limits. Number One began with Bezic layering bass, guitar, synth, and vocals on top of drum breaks and samples. She later recruited Toronto recording engineer and stalwart Steve Chahley (Badge Epoque, US Girls, Ben Stevenson, et al) to co-produce. They then recorded live drums performed by Evan J. Cartwright (U.S Girls, Tasseomancy), saxophone by Nick Dourado (BUDi Band, Aquakultre, Fiver) and Wurlitzer by Scott Harwood (Scott Hardware), expanding a bedroom project to blown out depths and glittering heights. The album's thoughtful production and lush layering of futuristic synths push the quick satisfaction of pop song structure into a hypnotizing work that reveals more of itself with each listen. Know thyself. Number One is a testament to the endurance and the shortcomings of that familiar maxim in our current climate. How do we make sense of the world and our place in it when we feel both complicit in its ills and victimized by them? How do we navigate being more connected than ever, when that connection twists reality and disconnects us from ourselves? How do we understand our mental health, our relationships, the structures that surround us? We look inward to find glimmers of truth, watching the fragments come together to form a distorted reflection, our own eyes atop a stranger's grinning, Colgate smile."

SOULEYMAN, OMAR Heli Yuweli 12"
Limited restock. "Souleyman's vocals are strong and assured on the title track, supported by traditional dabke instruments like the mijwiz, oud and tablas. As with most of Souleyman's music, the song is celebratory and undeniably danceable. Anonymous duo Rezzett, a Trilogy Tapes staple, lure 'Heli Yuweli' into their hazy techno lair. Their remix filters and distorts the original vocals, adding a blown-out bassline, a bouncing synth melody and flanging claps. And all the while Rezzett retain dabke's core elements. The aptly named 'Rerezz' version of 'Heli Yuweli' is a standout -- more suited to a spliff session than a wedding reception. The original is made to sound as if it's playing in a nearby room, reduced to near-static noise, with a gauzy melody disrupted by rhythmic cymbals. Considering the dark, melancholic Legowelt remix on his last LP, Souleyman could do with more bizarre remixes of his original songs. Rezzett is known for their own thumping, distorted techno productions, but their work on this B-side makes it seem like the pair could remix just about anything." --Resident Advisor

SUN CITY GIRLS Live at the Sky Church - September 3rd, 2004 LP/DVD
Limited restock, last copies. The first new Sun City Girls release since Funeral Mariachi (2010), Live at the Sky Church is a performance that melds their signature alien-jazz improv, Asian-tinged psychedelia, and Middle Eastern meditations together with their ranting psychodrama. An audio and visual recording from Seattle in 2004 shows a group that is both aware and committed to its history, while still demonstrating the power of the experimental to drive an enormous cudgel through the heart of those who believe to have all the answers. Twenty One Eighty Two Recording Company has had a long history with Sun City Girls, most of which, the Girls were unaware of. While the label were not at the show, their attempt to help continue to put a part of Arizona's musical history in the appropriate context convinced the Girls that a bunch of subversives from a town no one admits to being from to be the right people to put this document into the world. Society rarely documents the things that matter, and the label hope to change that with this release. It is a document that now stands to the interplay between three friends before that history would be sunset way before its time. As the recording begins, you already realize the experience will be too short, but what the fuck are you supposed to do but celebrate that it happened. The Girls came from Phoenix, Arizona, but now have traveled the world exploring sound, documenting travel, and attempting to be the emissaries that should represent these union of states. Live at the Sky Church illustrates this history and attempts to provide a manifesto without dictating the experience. Will you listen? Includes DVD. KHORSHID, OMAR With Love LP
Wewantsounds present the first vinyl reissue Omar Khorshid's cult instrumental album from 1978 originally released in Lebanon. The album features Khorshid's trademark twangy electric guitar sound over Arabic melodies enhanced by fascinating fuzzed-up arrangements and early synthesizer sounds. Wewantsounds' series of Arabic music reissues are curated by Lebanese-born Arabic music expert Mario Choueiry from Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris. The album has been newly remastered and comes with the original Voice of Lebanon LP artwork. One of the greatest guitar players of the Arab world accompanying such stars as Oum Kalthoum, Abdel Halim Hafez, and Farid El Atrache, Omar Khorshid was born in Cairo in 1945. After studying music from an early age, he joined the Egyptian pop group Les Petits Chats in 1966 and played with them for a couple of years. After seeing the group playing, Abdel Halim Hafez then recruited Khorshid for his band which led him to subsequently play for Egyptian diva Oum Khalthoum and a few other Egyptian pop stars. Following the political troubles faced by Egypt in the early '70s, Khorshid decided to move to Lebanon in 1973 and started recording under his own name for a few Beirut-based labels. In 1977, he was invited by Egyptian President Anwar El-Sadat to perform at the White House for the celebration of the Camp David Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty. In 1978, Khorshid moved out again -- to Syria this time -- for a about a year before returning to his homeland of Egypt to concentrate on live performances and on his nascent film career. Unfortunately, Khorshid efforts were cut short and he didn't have time to fulfil his ambitions tragically dying in a motorbike crash in May 1981, aged just 36. With Love released by the Beirut-based Voice of Lebanon label in 1978 is a testament to Omar Khorshid's greatness and encapsulate the unique sound of his guitar playing over modern arrangements establishing him as one of Arabic music's true innovator. Featuring reworkings of such favorites as Mohamed Abdel Wahab's "Ahwak", Farid El-Atrache's "Hebbina Hebbina" (a Brian Eno favorite), and the Rahbani Brothers' "Rahbaniyat", the album is a fascinating example of modern Arabic music that aimed at fusing traditional influences with the more contemporary ones, and has become highly sought-after by lovers of this Middle Eastern sounds around the world.

BROONZY, BIG BILL Do That Guitar Rag 1928-1935 (Color Vinyl) LP
Color vinyl version. Originally released in 1973. "The late Big Bill Broonzy looms as one of the few country blues greats whose career seems as remarkable as his musicianship. He played every professional role available to the untutored black guitarist of his generation: that of the country blues soloist catering to dance audiences, the city bluesman beguiling record-buyers with full-dress lyric themes and a slow song delivery, and the folk entertainer trading on familiar standards ear-marked for white listening audiences... It is his early career as a country bluesman that this LP, like its companion volume The Young Bill Broonzy commemorates."
