CANDY OPERA The Patron Saint of Heartache CD
Sometimes it takes a while to realize what you've got. So it goes with pop craftsmen Candy Opera, who emerged during Liverpool's 1980s golden age and whose new album The Patron Saint of Heartache is their first collection of new material in nearly three decades. Ahead of that, they presented "These Days Are Ours", a rally cry of hope for the current times and the first single from this long-player. Mixed by Grammy award-winning producer Guy Massey and featuring back vocals by Paul Simpson of The Wild Swans, the track was recorded at Elevator Studios in Liverpool. With all the hallmarks of an enduring pop anthem, this impeccably produced, adrenalin-fueled song captures the essence of Candy Opera's infectious energy and celebrates life with a genuine wonder-lust, whilst delivering the excitement of their live performances. Following the overdue release of two archival sets -- 45 Revolutions Per Minute and Rarities (released in 2018 by Firestation Records) -- their new album The Patron Saint of Heartache picks up where the band left off, with 14 fresh songs ready for discovery of a sound as timeless as any Candy Opera output. Candy Opera were formed in Liverpool in 1982 and went through various incarnations before calling it a day in 1992. By 1985, the band had played alongside the likes of The Pogues, The Go-Betweens, and The Redskins, as well as appearing on Granada TV. The band's current line-up is drawn from all eras of the band's existence and features Brian Chin Smithers (guitar, vocals), Alan Currie (drums), Frank Mahon (bass), Paul Malone (vocals, guitar), Ken Moss (guitar) and Gary O'Donnell (keyboards, vocals, percussion). This new LP also features a swathe of friends and contemporaries, including Paul Simpson (The Wild Swans) and Phil Jones (Afraid of Mice). The result is an exquisite piece of pop craftsmanship that brings their songs into the light. This is a labor of love born of experience, but retaining the sense of wonder that brought the band together in the first place. "When Candy Opera first appeared on the kaleidoscopic early 1980s Liverpool music scene, by rights they should have changed the world" --Louder Than War "Very welcome news as a highly underrated band who is now back with a force. While their previous output is stellar, this new single is even more commanding of attention. This is absolutely stunning, the band reaching higher than ever before." --Big Takeover Magazine CD version includes lyric booklet.

ASTATKE & BLACK JESUS EXPERIENCE, MULATU To Know Without Knowing LP
2021 restock; LP version. To Know Without Knowing, Mulatu Astatke & Black Jesus Experience's album, is their second together. A grooving transcontinental gem, recorded in Melbourne, Australia, and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Filled with the warmth of the mentorship and friendship of their creative partnership honed over a decade of performing together in Africa, Australia, and UK/Europe. Mulatu Astatke is the father of Ethio-jazz and one of Africa's most influential and enduring musical figures. Black Jesus Experience is a community of artists, centered around a twelve-piece global-funk-machine born of Australia's vibrant multiculturalism. Mulatu and Black Jesus Experience met in Addis Ababa in 2009, embarking on both a musical relationship and a friendship that has led Mulatu Astake to describe Black Jesus Experience as, "My favorite backing band" and, "...they're family." Mulatu's great contribution to music has been to combine Jazz and funk grooves with Ethiopia's distinctive pentatonic scales. His musical genius is the sensuality and sophistication with which Mulatu contrasts these minimalist scales with richly chromatic harmony. But Mulatu's equally great contribution has been to share both his enduringly unique modernity and Ethiopia's timelessly spiritual music with the world. Black Jesus Experience treasure the special relationship of generosity, mentorship and collaboration they have been privileged to share with this master musician. To Know Without Knowing is the product of this gift.

GHEDI, JIM In The Furrows Of Common Place CD
Whilst Jim Ghedi's previous idiosyncratic take on folk has often been instrumental, exploring the natural world and his relationship to it through his music as seen on 2018's A Hymn For Ancient Land. His new album, In The Furrows Of Common Place, is a deeper plunge inside himself to offer up more of his voice to accompany his profoundly unique and moving compositions. "There were things I was seeing around me and being affected by in my daily life," he says. "Socially and politically, I saw defiance but also hopelessness. I wanted to be honest with the frustration and turmoil I was experiencing." The decision to include more of Ghedi's vocals was a conscious one and driven by a need to say something. However, this isn't a brash raging political polemic. As is now customary with Ghedi's work, it is rich in nuance, history, poetry and allegory. Musically, the album is equally locked into this ongoing sense of evolution. Ghedi's intricate yet deft guitar playing still twists and flows its way through the core, weaving in and out of gliding double bass, sweeping violin, gentle percussion, and vocals that shift from tender solos to overlapping harmonies. As with much of Ghedi's work, there's a rich connection between the past and the current. Musically, he continues to sit in a singular position of sounding distinctly contemporary yet also with a touch of traditional flair. This expands itself into the lyrical terrain here too. "I've been exploring contemporary issues and in that process discovering sources that correlate with similar issues in the past," he says. "Which proves that these issues throughout history -- environmental destruction, working class poverty etc. -- are ongoing." For all the socio-political and historical backdrop to the record it is not one that feels overwhelmed by it. Much like Ghedi's work when it was largely instrumental -- and some of it still is here -- it flows and unfurls thoughtfully, with space still being utilized masterfully, creating room to pause and reflect. It's another inimitable record from an artist that truly sounds like nobody else right now.

KASAI WITH HERBIE HANCOCK, KIMIKO Butterfly LP
Repressed. Be With Records present the first ever official reissue of Kimiko Kasai with Herbie Hancock's Butterfly, originally released in 1979. The positively sublime and very rare Butterfly LP, recorded in Tokyo in 1979 by Japanese songstress Kimiko Kasai and jazz legend Herbie Hancock. Due to its super-rare status as a Japan-only release, this exquisite collection of covers never got the recognition it deserved at the time, despite incredibly inspired performances from Kimiko, Herbie, and the supremely talented musicians assembled for the project. From heavenly drummer Alphonse Mouzon and renowned organist Webster Lewis to bassist Paul Jackson, reedman Bennie Maupin, and the master percussionist Bill Summers, the legendary performers crafted amazingly good vocal versions of Herbie/Headhunters jazz-funk. Unsurprisingly, it has been heavily in demand for many years. The LP opens with Kimiko's highly desirable version of "I Thought It Was You", an elegant take on Herbie's own anthem. Other superb re-workings include the delicately soulful "Butterfly", jazzy groover "Sunlight", the smooth and sexy "Tell Me A Bedtime Story", and the beautiful ballads "Maiden Voyage" and "Harvest Time". A wonderful example of perfectly understated and masterful jazz-funk soul fusion that shouldn't be missed, the set closes with a jaw-dropping version of Stevie Wonder's "As". This lovingly curated reissue enables a long overdue reappraisal of this hitherto unavailable masterpiece. The stunning artwork which adorned the original jacket -- complete with obi strip and sumptuous four-page folded insert -- has been faithfully restored. Mastered by Simon Francis, and pressed on 180 gram vinyl.

GRIFFITHS, MARCIA Sweet And Nice 2LP
2021 restock. Be With Records present a reissue of Sweet And Nice, the vital debut album from Jamaica's undisputed first lady of song Marica Griffiths, originally released in 1974. It's reggae at its most soulful. Slinking through a tight ten tracks of R&B and pop-sourced material, it became an instant best seller. Sweet And Nice has appeared over the years with a revised running order and under different titles. But the original's opening sequence of loping soul is legendary, even beyond reggae circles. These songs are now returned to how they were presented on that first Jamaican release, and under their intended album title. Be With doesn't mess with magic. Marcia's version of "Here I Am (Come and Take Me)" has long been lusted after, played by genre-hopping selectors to snapping necks for decades now. It's followed by the sophisticated, rollicking wah-wah funk of "Everything I Own" and the slice of smooth lovers soul par excellence that is "Green Grasshopper" and her ace, lilting Neil Diamond cover "Play Me". The thundering, humid funk of "Children At Play" "sounds uncannily like a precursor of Massive Attack", as FACT Mag astutely noted when they put Sweet And Nice at number 16 in their list of the 100 best albums of the 1970s. Otherworldly, moody, and essential. Side two keeps the fire burning. "Sweet, Bitter Love" should leave you swooning, and is also one of the album's alternate titles. Curtis Mayfield's already-eternal "Gypsy Man" follows, recast as proto-lovers rock. "There's No Me Without You" is elevated to canonical status by the majestic, forlorn horns of the Federal Soul Givers and Marcia's heartbreaking delivery. And if this doesn't get you then surely the next track will: arguably the definitive version of Ewan MacColl's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face". "I Just Don't Want To Be Lonely" re-takes its rightful place at the end of the LP's second side... but Be With Records added an entire second record of rare material recorded around the same time as Sweet And Nice, much of it unavailable since it was originally released. Amongst these 14 extra tracks you'll find the exquisite late-60s singles "Melody Life" and "Mark My Word" which, along with the sumptuous reading of "Band Of Gold". All material is remastered. 140 gram vinyl.

ORTOLANI, RIZ La Ragazza Di Trieste CD
La Ragazza Di Trieste (aka "The Girl from Trieste" - "La fille de Trieste") is a drama film directed in 1982 by Pasquale Festa Campanile starring Ornella Muti, Ben Gazzara, Jean-Claude Brialy, Mimsy Farmer, Andréa Ferréol, and William Berger. At the time, a 33rpm (New Polaris, POL / BP 733) was printed in Italy and reissued in Switzerland by Milan (A CH 002). Unfortunately, the album master was lost, but it was possible to reassemble it using the first-generation stereo masters of the original session. Apart from some tracks that were identical to those from the session, we also had to edit most of the pieces that Riz Ortolani had assembled by editing small takes together. Ultimately, the ten tracks from the vinyl were rescued in excellent stereo sound, and in the session masters, Beat Records discovered twelve unreleased tracks that bring this CD set to a total duration of just around 52 minutes. This soundtrack once again highlights the whole romantic side of Riz Ortolani, certainly one of the greatest melodists in the world. Alas, another CD joins Ortolani's ever-growing discography. Mastering and liner notes by Claudio Fuiano; graphic layout by Daniele De Gemini. 12-page booklet.

BETA BAND, THE Hot Shots II 2LP+CD
2021 restock. Arguably one of the most acclaimed and loved bands of the past 20 years, by both fans and their musical peers alike, The Beta Band formed in St. Andrews, Scotland, in 1996. Innovative and singular, their unique musical and aesthetic approach to everything they did set them far apart from their musical contemporaries. Together for a relatively short period of time, the three albums and three EPs they released between 1996 and 2004 would nonetheless help define them as one of the most exciting and cherished bands of their generation. After a short hiatus the band gradually gravitated back into the studio and recruited noted UK producer Colin Emmanuel, aka C-Swing, to oversee the process of Hot Shots II which was released in mid-2001. Notoriously the band had intended to release "Squares", which featured a sample from the Günter Kallmann Choir's 1970 version of Wallace Collection's "Daydream", as the lead single. However, after filming the music video and taking the single to radio it suddenly transpired that another single "Daydream In Blue" by I Monster featuring the sample from Günter Kallmann Choir recording was also to be released at the same time causing the band to release "Broke" instead. Touring extensively and supporting Radiohead in August 2002, they made No. 3 on Q magazine's list of "50 Bands to See Before You Die". Standard double-LP version includes CD; gatefold sleeve with printed inner-sleeves.

DAL FORNO, CARLA You Know What It's Like LP
2021 restock; LP version. Carla dal Forno presents her debut solo album You Know What It's Like, following time in cult Melbourne group Mole House and an earlier association with Blackest Ever Black as a member of F ingers and Tarcar. Her voice is an extraordinary instrument: both disarmingly conversational and glacially detached. It has something of the bedsit urbanity of Anna Domino, Marine Girls, Antena, or Helen Johnstone - stoned and deadpan - but it can also summon a gothic intensity that Nico or Kendra Smith would approve of. This voice is the perfect embodiment of dal Forno's emotionally ambiguous songs: their lyrics rooted in the everyday, observing and exposing a series of uncomfortable truths. "Fast Moving Cars" and "What You Gonna Do Now?" weigh up claustrophobia against loneliness, inertia against acceleration, doubling-down versus taking-off; the title track acknowledges the provisional nature of love and "real" intimacy, then decides to brave it anyway. By the time the startlingly sparse "The Same Reply" arrives, the sense of dejection is absolute. The vocal-led pieces are interspersed with richly evocative instrumentals. Smothered in tape-hiss and reverb, the seasick synthesizer miniatures "Italian Cinema" and "Dragon Breath" channel the twilit DIY whimsy of Flaming Tunes and Call Back The Giants. The drum machine and bassline of "DB Rip" are pure Chicago house, but then its dark choral drones nod to Dalis Car's dreams of blood-spattered Cornwall stone. "Dry The Rain" drinks from a stream of moon-musick that runs through Coil, In Gowan Ring, Third Ear Band, even the Raincoats's Odyshape (1981).

CANNELL, STEWART LEE AND FRIENDS, LAURA These Feral Lands Volume 1 CD
UK composer and performer Laura Cannell is joined in this new collaboration by writer and comedian Stewart Lee, Ireland based new music cellist Kate Ellis, writer and broadcaster Jennifer Lucy Allan, and musician and writer Polly Wright. These Feral Lands Volume 1 melds together words and music inspired by feral animal sounds, ancient stories, and personal folklore. The ten tracks were built upon a set of unreleased violin improvisations by Cannell titled "Buzzard A-H". They were recorded at the beginning of 2020 while watching and being watched by a buzzard sitting on a pole in the farmyard opposite her house. "The Buzzard" recordings may not always be audible but they are always there, like the "Buzzard" itself. Cannell invited Stewart Lee to create and record stories inspired by the landscape, leaving him free to bring his own meaning and the results are some of the most personal material he has written. Recent discoveries about parts of his family geography had come to light, in the area close to where Cannell is from on the Norfolk/Suffolk borders, and also in the Welsh borderlands. The tracks come together like an old BBC Radio Ballad, part spoken, part sung, the writers perform their own pieces which were intimately recorded from their own homes and which draw on ancient folklore and landscapes. The music is mainly performed on strings by two contemporary musicians Cannell and Ellis, violin, overbowed violin, cello and double-bass, and ending with a clunking wheezing harmonium played by Polly Wright (which she bought for one pound). From the guttural toothless storytelling of a madman warning that the demon dog of East Anglia is still out there in "Black Shuck", to the hopeful song "Alone In The Wolf Thickets" which is searching for peace while acknowledging our losses in these feral times. The whole album is the coming together of different strands in a semi-improvised new collaboration by a set of individuals who are making work for our time, and for those who follow after us, continuing the tradition of passing stories and music forward. All parts were recorded individually in the performers' homes during the early summer of 2020. Mixed and produced by Laura Cannell from her shed/studio in Suffolk, UK.

CZARFACE Every Hero Needs a Villain 2LP
2021 repress. "CZARFACE -- Wu-Tang founding MC Inspectah Deck and veteran Boston duo 7L & Esoteric -- isn't concerned with the glitz and the B.S. that modern consumer culture is pushing. And neither are the group's fans. In 2013, the trio appeared relatively unassumingly with their self-titled debut, which was chiefly produced by DJ 7L and included guests ranging from Ghostface Killah and Cappadonna to Vinnie Paz, Action Bronson and Roc Marciano. The soon-to-be acclaimed group found out quickly that there was a groundswell of hip-hop fanatics thirsting for the lunchpail, lyrics-above-all-else rap they fell in love with in the '90s. Several pressings of the album on CD, 2-LP and even cassette later, they are back and ready to up the ante. The fighting analogy -- whether drawn from pugilism or '80s wrestling, both which figure into Every Hero Needs A Villain -- is an apt one, considering the unrelenting lyrical attacks that Deck and Esoteric unleash on track after track, each trying to one-up the previous verse. Best of all, it is friendly camaraderie, based around a loose theme of renegade mutant MC talents running wild. DJ 7L explains, 'All three of us are influenced by comics, sci-fi movies, TV, wrestling. Czarface encompasses all of that, and it helps with the visuals as well.' On the production side, 7L shows yet again -- as he did with the group's debut -- that he remains a formidable yet underappreciated musical force, constantly providing hard, funky and alternatingly ominous backdrops for the assembled MCs to use as lyrical luge paths."

CLUSTER Sowiesoso LP
2021 restock; LP version. The fourth full-length album by legendary German electronic music duo Cluster, originally released on Sky Records in 1976. Sowiesoso follows on from their most highly-acclaimed album, Zuckerzeit (1974). Michael Rother's influence was clearly audible on the latter, Cluster already having recorded two albums with him under the name of Harmonia. 1976 saw the duo looking for new musical forms. More than any other Cluster album, Sowiesoso represents the utopian vision of Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Mobius, its mellow transparency evoking the landscape of the Weser Uplands where the two musicians lived at the time. Sowiesoso is not the work of fanatic dreamers who have fled the metropolis, but the reward for their tenacious search for a new musical language. The LP's seven cuts were recorded in their own studio with modest equipment -- a four-track tape machine, two Revox A77 stereo tape-decks and a simple 8-channel mixer. Cluster were thus completely independent, able to work where and when they wanted, at their own pace. With no guest musicians, sound engineers or producers to accommodate, Cluster thrived on their new-found autonomous freedom. Sowiesoso captures them at the peak of their creative development, with the limited range of recording equipment enhancing the clarity of their vision, allowing them to concentrate on the music without drifting into narcissistic muso territory. Minimalist, yet neither formulaic nor automated, the album is a rhythmic tapestry of otherworldly electronic and acoustic elements -- relaxed, organic and gentle ambience. This could only be Cluster music; its harmonies reaffirm the quality of song, in spite of eluding song structure as such.

FM EINHEIT Exhibition Of A Dream 2CD
Twelve dreams of musicians, artists, and filmmakers, interpreted by FM Einheit (ex-Einstürzende Neubauten), with voices by: Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), Genesis Breyer P-Orridge (Psychic TV, Throbbing Gristle), Susan Stenger (Band Of Susans), Émilie Pitoiset, Erika Stucky, and the Gubenkian Choir; with guest musicians: Volker Kamp, Saskia von Klitzing, Robert Poss, and Susan Stenger. Exhibition Of A Dream (L'exposition D'un Rêve) is formed of twelve dreams interpreted as songs. Exploded in time, these are played as temporary and evolving patterns of shapes and forms in an otherwise empty gallery following the drawings of mandalas. Exhibition Of A Dream highlights the complex beauty of how to generate a dream in the mind of the spectator. A shared experience to be lived within our own personal inner space, these remastered dreams are an invitation to listen to a sensitive architecture of words and music. Created 2017, recorded both in public and in private in the amphitheaters and the garden of the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon, and in Einheit's own studio Steinschlag. The dreamers were: Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Lee Ranaldo, Émilie Pitoiset, Susan Stenger, Susie Green, David Link, Pierre Paulin, Alexandre Estrela, Tim Etchells, Gabriel Abrantes, FM Einheit, and Genesis Breyer P-Orridge. Originally released as a triple-LP set, and only ever available at the 2018 exhibition at the Foundation. Presented in a six-panel matt-laminate double digipak.

Cugate Classics presents a reissue of the 2001 release Works For Choir by Arvo Pärt, one of the most important and influential composers of our time. Arvo Pärt (born 1935 in Paide, Estonia) doesn't need to be introduced to anyone who has the slightest interest in classical music, and his audience reaches far beyond the regular attendants of symphony halls. After first serial compositions, "Credo" (1968) was a turning point in Pärt's life and work, being the first piece carrying a religious title and expressing a creative crisis that Pärt answered by lesser compositions and studying medieval and Renaissance music in search for a new musical language. In 1976, Pärt returned with "Für Alina" and introduced his new (and self-developed) style that should become his trademark sound which made him the famous and honored composer he is now: the so-called tintinnabuli. In 1984, after the Estonian composer and his family emigrated from the USSR and settled in Germany, the album Tabula Rasa opened the next important chapter in PÄRT's career: the ever continuing close relation to Manfred Eicher and his ECM label where many of the composer's works have been released since. Works For Choir presents several compositions for choir from the period from 1989 to 1991, recorded in Vilnius with the award winning Vilnius Municipal Choir Jauna Muzika under the artistic direction of Vaclovas Augustinas. The Vilnius Municipal Choir Jauna Muzika choir was founded in 1989 by the conductor and composer Remigijus Merkelys and long-time director Algimantas Gurevi?ius and has since won several prizes, among others six Grand Prix in 16 international choral competitions around the world, and in 1993 it was awarded with the highest prize, the Grand Prix Europeo, in a competition organized by the International Federation of Choral Music. Remastered by Helmut Erler at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin.

MAYFIELD, CURTIS Curtis LP
2021 repress. Gatefold exact repro reissue, manufactured by Rhino; originally released in 1970. "The first solo album by the former leader of the Impressions, Curtis represented a musical apotheosis for Curtis Mayfield -- indeed, it was practically the Sgt. Pepper's album of '70s soul, helping with its content and its success to open the whole genre to much bigger, richer musical canvases than artists had previously worked with. All of Mayfield's years of experience of life, music, and people were pulled together into a rich, powerful, topical musical statement that reflected not only the most up-to-date soul sounds of its period, finely produced by Mayfield himself, and the immediacy of the times and their political and social concerns, but also embraced the most elegant R&B sounds out of the past." -- All Music Guide

MOORE, THURSTON By The Fire 2LP
Limited 2021 repress. Double LP version. 180 gram, black vinyl. This is Thurston Moore's seventh solo album, and features musicians Deb Googe (My Bloody Valentine) on bass and backing vocals, Jon Leidecker aka "Wobbly" (of Negativland) on electronics, James Sedwards on guitar, and Sonic Youth's Steve Shelley, as well as Jem Doulton, alternating on drums. "Hashish", the ?rst single from the album, is described by Moore as "an ode to the narcotic of love in our shared responsibility to each other during isolation." The song includes a video with footage from The Thurston Moore Group's tour in early 2020 in Europe, as well as footage of Thurston quarantined in his home during the past few months "with respect to the sacred healing truth of nature." Prior to isolation during the COVID pandemic, Thurston worked in recording studios in North London until the third week of March 2020 to complete this album for release on September 5, 2020. While the musicians may not immediately tour, Thurston was adamant to release By The Fire in 2020, and with Daydream Library, has released this quote: By The Fire is music in ?ames. 2020 is our time for radical change and collective awareness and Thurston Moore has written nine songs of enlightenment, released to a world on ?re. Taking a cue from Albert Ayler's "music is the healing force of the universe," this recording offers songs as ?ames of rainbow energy, where the power of love becomes our call. These are love songs in a time where creativity is our dignity, our demonstration against the forces of oppression. By The Fire is a gathering, a party of peace -- songs in the heat of the moment.

2021 repress. "The super group Deltron 3030 is composed of producer Dan the Automator, rapper Del tha Funkee Homosapien and DJ Kid Koala and sometimes features guest artists who also take on varying futuristic pseudonyms. Originally released in 2000 on the now-defunct 75ARK record label, this hip hop concept album was released the same year as the Gorillaz' first 12" and is on a similar plane. Following the release of Deltron 3030, all three members participated in the Gorillaz' self-titled debut album. With Del aka Deltron Zero on vocals, Dan the Automator aka The Cantankerous Captain Aptos on production, and Kid Koala aka Skiznoid the Boy Wonder on turntables, this album takes the listener on a paranoid journey set in a dystopian year 3030 dealing with viruses, the apocalypse, an oppressive government, and a war waged against a huge company called the Corporate Bank of Time that rules the universe, all to the well-crafted and consistent musical backing of the Automator. Appearances by Damon Albarn (The Gorillaz, Blur), Prince Paul, Peanut Butter Wolf, DJ Money Mark, Paul Barman, Mark Bell (Bjork, production), Sean Lennon, and Mr. Lif compliment Del's vocal style and add the right amount of flavor to this classic period piece."

LITTLE, BOOKER Booker Little LP
Down At Dawn present a reissue of Booker Little's self-titled album, originally released in 1960. Trumpet genius Booker Little appeared on many seminal records such as Max Roach's We Insist! (1961), Eric Dolphy's Far Cry (1962), and John Coltrane's Africa / Brass (1961). Recorded in 1960 for the Time label, this is Booker Little's second album as a leader (there would only be four) and a major statement in his too short career. A dynamic and yet relaxed session with Little as the only horn in the band, a fine quartet featuring Winton Kelly or Tommy Flanagan on piano, Scott LaFaro on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums. A highly interactive combo inspired by Little's unique trumpet approach. "Little's immediately recognizable melancholy sound and lyrical style are heard in top form," as Scott Yanow stated in his 4½ stars album review at AllMusic.

LINCOLN, ABBEY Straight Ahead LP
Down At Dawn present a reissue of Abbey Lincoln's Straight Ahead, originally released in 1961. Abbey Lincoln, often remembered for her seminal work with Max Roach, was a powerful performer and indeed one of the greatest jazz voices of all time. Straight Ahead stands as one her best albums. Lincoln is matched here by an ultra-stellar line-up including jazz masters such as Booker Little (trumpet), Julian Priester (trombone), Eric Dolphy (alto saxophone, bass clarinet, flute), Walter Benton and Coleman Hawkins (tenor saxophone), Mal Waldron (piano), Art Davis (bass), Max Roach (drums), Roger Sanders and Robert Whitley (congas). Straight Ahead is the perfect combination between Lincoln 's strong "Afro-Blue" tone singing, conscious lyrics, and angular modern jazz arrangements. Recorded in New York in a one-off studio session held on February 22, 1961 and released by Candid Records in the same year, the album includes highlights such as Oscar Brown Jr's "When Malindy Sings", Thelonious Monk's "Blue Monk", Billie Holiday and Mal Waldron's "Left Alone", and "African Lady", a Randy Weston composition based on lyrics by the great writer Langston Hughes.

FRA DET ONDE FEAT. THE LEGENDARY EMIL NIKOLAISEN Fra Det Onde Feat. the Legendary Emil Nikolaisen LP
Limited restock. Three of Norway's most vital musicians got together for a unique session, that places Fra Det Onde (From Evil) on the shoulders of the great American masters of improvisation, as well as the sleek European tradition of electric jazz poetry. There's a deep level of pure skill present -- they have travelled these roads many times before and the mileage behind them is frankly astonishing. Drummer Olaf Olsen, all hippie hair and broad smiles, from renowned prog-ensemble Bigbang. Rickenbacker bass plough Rune Nergaard is a part of Exoterm, with Nels Cline and Jim Black. Trumpeter Erik Kimestad Pedersen, from the southern tip of Norway, has turned Danish and stirred a wave in the Copenhagen jazz scene. Adding to the mystery is the clear presence of elusive noise-guru Emil Nikolaisen of Serena Maneesh behind the mixing console, and on the occasional Farfisa. Like a Teo Macero in space, Nikolaisen's singular mixing style adds a crucial signature to the album, pushing the limits of sonic exploration even further. Nikolaisen is a full force of nature at work, making the ghosts appear through his tubes and oscillators. You can hear their eerie howls throughout the album, like specters from other times, other places trapped behind and beyond the tapestry of music. Includes liner notes by Ando Woltmann.

FLOW TRIO WITH JOE MCPHEE Winter Garden CD
From the producer's liner notes: "It is an interesting question how old 'free jazz' is. At some point, even a theme and a plan became optional. In the ESP-Disk' catalog, 'Taneou' on the Giuseppi Logan Quartet's eponymous album sounds like this approach of complete freedom starting from scratch; it was recorded on November 11, 1964. Joe McPhee, in 1967, appeared on Clifford Thornton's album Freedom and Unity, so his recording career covers 53 of those 56 years, 95% of the approach's history. Each succeeding decade found another player on this album joining the confraternity: Downs in 1976, Morris in 1983, and Belogenis in 1993. By that method of counting, there are 159 years of collective experience being heard on this album. Credits: Joe McPhee - tenor saxophone; Louie Belogenis - tenor and soprano saxophones; Joe Morris - bass; Charles Downs - drums. Cover painting: "tree bark & berries (for c.h.) #5," 2004, by Yuko Otomo. Recorded on January 11, 2020 by Jim Clouse at Park West Studios, Brooklyn NY. Produced by Steve Holtje.

ROMANCE OF BABA LOCO, THE Cling Clang For Funk Monkeys 10"
Ethno-alternative lo-fi absurdism from the mind of London based multi-instrumentalist and Primordial Soup member, Samuel Huxley. Expect everything from Hindu ceremonial music to dark lounge, post-punk, and avant-garde, to Kabuki theater score and world electronica, any number of which can be found within a single track. The Romance of Baba Loco is the union of wisdom and madness, eastern mysticism and western folly, absurdism to catch you with yer pantaloons down... The Romance of Baba Loco is the latest iteration of a recording project by Samuel Huxley that originally made ambient soundscapes for psychotropics. In 2017, Samuel was curating infamous venue and scene of a multitude of glories and horrors, The Five Bells in New Cross, SE London. One of his first acts to play was Primordial Soup, at that time a three-piece absurdist art rock band. They quickly became friends and began performing semi-improv shows as a five-piece, and later went on to form Primordial Soup Collective whose main focus was esoteric experimental theater and film, and rare multidisciplinary exhibitions. This changing focus of Soup away from sound provoked Samuel to channel his musical compulsions in to his solo project which had by then ventured far away from ambient soundscapes to shrieking Indian and Moroccan oboes over African and Indian tribal rhythms, with the desire to create the raw lo-fi atmospheres of street music. Gradually guitar styles of South East Asia and Latin America were introduced, leading to backing track solo performances and outrageous live improv freakouts with Craig Deporto (ex-Flamingods) and Luke Bell (Ex-Wild Birds of Britain). Finally, two days before the glorious pandemic lockdown, Samuel signed to Faith & Industry, which birthed new moniker The Romance of Baba Loco and three months-worth of ceaseless creation. From the Hindu Ceremonial music of the Shehnai and Nadaswaram to post-punk, absurdism, and experimental art, the Romance of Baba Loco finally united two seemingly dissonant sides of his personality in a manner he had not previously achieved. The old material was cast off, and these peculiar fruits of imprisonment, can be found on his first release, Cling Clang For Funk Monkeys. Experimental post-punk exotica for fans of Sun City Girls, Sunburned Hand of Man, Meridian Brothers.

Includes two bonus tracks, "Moiré (Guitar & Horns)" and "Poren", B-sides from Tendency EP (2000)."Don't be misled by the title, though for there isn't a finger-snapping rhythm bebop lead anywhere on the album. Instead, Jelinek chooses to explore the visual effect moiré - two shifting patterns creating an implied third dimension - in the audio realm." --Alternative Press"The title acts as explanation for the studio technique that provided the basis for this album, snippets of other people's arrangements deconstructed through a sampler into loops and then splashed onto an audio canvas." --ATM"Jelinek's sound evolved out of his dislike for (and inability to play) keyboards." --RPM"Jelinek has abstracted his sources beyond recognition, looping his millisecond samples into flickering patterns of sonic moiré laid atop a dub techno framework. . . . Jelinek might as well have sampled a horn player's hissing intake of breath - it would have been 'jazz' enough for his purposes." --The Wire"It's a perfect inversion of conventional music, a sonic negative. Everything that would typically be foreground is moved back or pushed off the screen altogether, and the flecks of sonic debris that would normally be covered by other sounds are left to carry the melody and rhythm." --Pitchfork"All you need to know is that these onomatopoeic non-specific songs . . . are warm, paradisiacal creations." --NME"Listen carefully and you'll hear textures slowly unfolding and mutating. Presuming you've not fallen asleep of course." --iDJ"At times, it's all a bit dripping tap Japanese water torture; so sedentary it drowns in its own motionlessness" --DJ"Loop-Finding-Jazz-Recordsis a genuine modern classic whose re-release is anything but a cynical mortgage repayment exercise. Consider this a second chance, then pretend you had it all along." --Boomkat"I've been fortunate enough to see Jan Jelinek live once, at Tonic NYC (...) YOUNGS, RICHARD Metal River LP
New album by a favorite artist of Fourth Dimension, whose work can traverse everywhere from avant-folk or otherworldly pop to minimalist electronics or some of the most fervent "outer sounds" one can dredge from the deepest crevices of their doubtlessly life battle-scarred imagination. On Metal River, Richard Youngs offers four songs of deep space beamed curdled electronics not far removed from being akin to the contorted death caterwauls of a cyborg species reaching out in uttermost anguish. It's like prime Edgar Froese getting snagged on Incapacitants before tumbling headlong into a dingy cellar that then has its door slammed shut and locked before one notices the only company is accorded by body parts in dusty and moldy demijohns. Features three songs on the first side, "Days of Gravity Indoors", "Metal River" and "Rainy Days Static Caravan", plus the side long "Dual Monody of Accumulated Detritus". KLEISTWAHR In the Reign of Dying Embers CD
For a number of years now, Fourth Dimension has been responsible for releasing most of Gary Mundy of Ramleh's solo works under his Kleistwahr guise. Each of these albums is possessed of a thematic approach harboring some of his obsessions, passions and explorations into both pure, unadulterated sonic expression and many of the concerns driving it. Although traces of Gary's longstanding interest in unforgiving and uncompromising music can often be found threaded throughout Kleistwahr's work, it is (rather like Ramleh's own recordings) far more nuanced and subtle. Contorted layers of psychedelic noise converge with tormented vocals, ghostly organ sounds wafting in from a derelict church, life beat pulses, rhythms that fall in on themselves and an avant-garde sensibility apparently drawing from minimalist composition and a crushing feeling of unease itself jarred into all manner of surprising shapes. This is music to fall backwards into whilst understanding vipers lurk somewhere close by. In the Reign of Dying Embers, however, is not entirely wracked by the kind of primal despair best reserved for daily coverage of leading world events, though. There are flecks of light in the mix, some held on to and nurtured more than others, that suggest a reaching out to better things. More than this, Kleistwahr proffers a somewhat more personal take on matters, harnessing a sound that embodies the sheer paradox of existential crises converging with meaning as the world around crumbles and burns. Each and every Kleistwahr album appears akin to Gary's taking another step towards curling into a quiet corner with one defiant fist still raised. Being itself founded on the idea of addiction in all its forms and the colossal pressure upon us to "escape" by varied means, In the Reign of Dying Embers underlines the hope in hopelessness so boldly it might well constitute the strongest statement thus far.

STARE TASMY (OLD TAPES) Kryzys Czytelnictwa (Literacy Crisis) CD
Stare Ta?my is a Polish typical supergroup, at least by Krakow standards. The musicians have quite an impressive background, including punk, improv, experimental, and even classical music. They've joined forces here to let out a loud shriek of angry disbelief, triggered by the general shape of the current society and the amount of malarkey in Polish public discourse. The album is titled Kryzys Czytelnictwa and consists of six punk, jazz, and religious chants, all combined to form this quite specific, powerful music. The genre they represent (and actually invented, too) is called "dark prog reality stand-up": hysterically serious compositions are filled with sampled voices of politicians, decades-old speeches found on abandoned anonymous cassette tapes and articles from current newspapers read out loud without any changes to the silliness and hatred of the original texts. Because there's no need to criticize anyone anymore, the world is perfect as it is. They just appreciate the details. Stare Ta?my is: Ma?gorzata Tekla Tekiel - bass; Paulina Owczarek - baritone sax; Tomek Cho?oniewski - drums; Marcin Barski - voice and samples.

JOHNSON, RICHARD Grudge For Life: A Book About Ramleh Book
During the past few years, material has been gathered concerning the group Ramleh for a book focusing on their beginning as one of the UK's leading power electronics mainstays to their becoming a more outward-bound rock group given to blending sprawling psychedelia, noise, post-punk, intense electronic music and far more besides, in addition to occasionally nodding to their earlier sound. Initially founded by Gary Mundy and Bob Strudwick after being inspired by punk, avant-garde, and industrial music, as well as the complete restart accorded by Whitehouse, Ramleh soon tore apart the templates with a sound and vision entirely their own. Mostly sidelined in the decades since, the group, now driven by Gary and Anthony Di Franco, has proven itself to be one of the most versatile and downright headstrong to have arrived from a time when dozens of such groups went almost as fast as they appeared. Like the very best of them, however, they not only kept going despite the odds, but also continued to push themselves artistically and explore new places just when an audience was starting to take notice. The idea of fitting snugly into a particular style was never on the agenda, irrespective of the group's having created a sound completely their own to work within. With the advent of the digital age, Ramleh deservedly gained a comparatively wider audience and are now often seen critically acclaimed or cited as an inspiration by other groups. Partly for these reasons, a book felt like a natural step to take in order to help pin down one of the more interesting narratives to have arisen from such realms of music, and indeed some of the ideas behind it. Collecting around 356 pages centered on a lengthy and conversational interview with Gary Mundy that looks back at Ramleh's inception and moves through the group's work until and including The Great Unlearning album, plus some of the peripheral projects, Grudge For Life: A Book About Ramleh also includes additional interviews and insight from Anthony Di Franco, Stuart Dennison, the late Simon Morris, Teho Teardo, Stephen Meixner, Steve Pittis, William Bennett, Kate MacDonald, Juntaro Yamanouchi, Richard Rupenus, and others. Besides also including a discography including extensive personal notes from Gary and Anthony and some other bonus material, there are pages dedicated to reprinted ephemera and some previously unpublished photos. Richard Johnson, responsible for conducting the interviews and collating the material, has released albums by both Gary and Anthony on his Fourth Dimension Records imprint. He has also produced a book devoted to his Grim Humour fanzine, plus during more recent years has contributed to several magazines. Book B5 hardback.

The original soundtrack of Gomorrah, the acclaimed Italian television crime drama inspired by Roberto Saviano's 2008 best-selling book Gomorrah. Gomorrah received unprecedented critical acclaim all over the world. The Guardian (UK) called it "The unmissable, ultimate mafia show" and German magazine Spiegel-Online says, "Forget the Sopranos, here they are the Savastanos!" The music from both seasons of Gomorrah is composed and performed by Mokadelic, a Rome based psychedelic-post-rock collective, specializing in music for film. The music of Mokadelic is influenced by the contemporary sounds of such names as Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, and Godspeed You Black Emperor, without forgetting the lessons from the great Italian soundtrack composers of the '60s and '70s. The soundtrack has an eclectic sound palette that alternates from spacious, melancholic atmospheres to extremely dense climaxes. It's an emotionally intense musical narrative, deeply inspired by Gomorrah's haunting realism.

U-ROY Dread In A Babylon LP

Bursting onto the Jamaican scene in the earliest 1970s, he pioneered the vocal approach called 'toasting,' which in addition to branching out Jamaican music into a new era, was also heavily influential on an American genre in its infancy: rapping. On Dread In A Babylon, his third full-length, he stretches out over traditional roots grooves provided by the Soul Syndicate and Skin, Flesh & Bones bands, riffing on topics including love ('Runaway Girl,' a 1975 single released in the UK on Virgin Records); the Bible ('The Great Psalms'); walking the straight and narrow ('Listen To The Teacher'); and even his take on governmental policy goals ('Chalice In The Palace'). The album finishes with an instrumental version of Bob Marley & The Wailers' 'Trench Town Rock,' for good measure. U-Roy's style and charisma are always on display, and -- as with all of his classic records -- the groove rules all. Presented on black vinyl with a poster of the glorious, ganja-drenched cover art, it's the perfect chance to revisit one of the more underrated voices in Jamaican musical history."

THE PERSON Tide Life LP
After the heaviest of years, it should be time to take a little weight off with the playful sounds of The Person. Mapping its own Bermuda Triangle between dub-pop, sugary synth wave, and Balearic boogie, Tide Life transports Compass Point to Soggy Bottom, providing maximum fun, sun and bitmap escapism. The eagle-eared may recognize The Person from the aspirational Italo-rockers Steaming Jeans, whose chalet-ready romp on Bordello A Parigi scored a Winter Olympic gold back in early 2020. Now left to her own devices, Minna Wight swaps the slopes for a jet ski and takes a wave race from Summer Bay to Monkey Island across 11 cuts of vintage oddball pop. Whether she's borrowing Brenda's Beach Balls for the dubby daydream of "Snail Café" and "The Place", serving lost library cues to SNES club scenes on "Barry R Reef" and "Elastic Shoes" or spinning high school slow jams into synth soul ballads like "Nice Feeling", Minna disguises serious musicianship behind a naive aesthetic. VA Lucky Are Those Who Hear The Birds Sing LP
"Digging deep through old and new, Basso captures arcane woodland fusion, serene electronic suites and wide-eyed Balearic bliss on this first Growing Bin compilation . . . A decade on and the Growing Bin is a safe haven for those exquisite sounds crowded out of the mainstream, the rare birds with the most striking song. 'Coffee' comes right after cocoa in the bin's headquarter, though start your morning with One Tongue and be prepared for a different kind of day. A witch's brew spiced with a hint of Durian and the early bird, this 1990 composition could be the blueprint for the Teutonic trance dancers beloved by the Salon set. A more meditative magic flows through the A2, a smooth blend of fusion guitar, softly syncopated drums and counterpoint keys from one-time art-rockers Inandout. This Growing Bin favorite from their 93-95 LP sounds right at home beside the majestic melodies and spheric bass of Matthias Raue's 'Brücke am schwarzen Fluss 2'. Taken from the soundtrack to a TV drama filmed in Mali, this digital homage to African rhythm shimmies in step with new age dancers from Mkwaju Ensemble and Louis Crelier. The A-side ends with the unbridled optimism of Kosmische maverick Hardy Kukuk. The synthesist hit the studio with friends Karsten Raecke and Andreas Schneider in '86, coalescing crystalline electronics and gentle guitar into tender chord progressions suited for sun bathing beside the Sea of Tranquility. The second side slinks into motion with the deep beauty and sincere spoken word of Frank Suchland's 'Schnee', a subtle body in a cocoon of reverb which takes Sade's 'I Never Thought I'd See The Day' to another level of placidness. Melancholic Germans Die Fische met in Cairo for the first time, and 'Conversation Of Everyday Lovers' could be the theme for that great city. Underpinned by primal percussion and a restrained groove, the track twists and turns between a trio of ineffable motifs, eternal combinations to the catacombs of Abusir. From there we go sublime, soaring skywards with a ten-minute triumph from Hugh Mane. Balancing concentric sequences and space age synth riffs atop an irresistible breakbeat and bubbling bassline, the British producer finds a sensuous sweet-spot between fellow Growing Bin affiliates Krakatau and Singu." --Patrick Ryder

WESTBERG & JACEK MAZURKIEWICZ, NORMAN First Man in the Moon LP
An unlikely meeting of two like-minded spirits, First Man in the Moon sees the former Swans guitarist and Hallow Ground regular Norman Westberg and the prolific double bass player Jacek Mazurkiewicz collaborate for five evocative tracks. The pair finds common ground beyond the boundaries of atmospheric drone, abstract jazz, and experimental music and blurs the lines between the acoustic and the electronic. The two first met when the composer Mazurkiewicz supported Swans with his solo project 3FoNIA on their 2014 European tour. "I really enjoyed his approach," says Westberg about the Polish musician's blending of the acoustic qualities of his instrument with electronically generated sounds. A decision to collaborate was made and when the US-American musician returned to Eastern Europe to support Michael Gira on his solo tour in late 2019, Mazurkiewicz reached out to him with the idea of booking some studio time before Gira's two concerts in Warsaw. "Recording was very fun and easy," remembers Westberg. "It was just two people enjoying hearing and reacting to what the other is doing." First Man in the Moon is not however a plain document of these improvised sessions, but also shaped by Mazurkiewicz's approach as a composer. Once the recordings were finished, he selected and edited the recorded material, refining the peculiar dialogue between the guitarist's meditative drones and bright chords and his own rhythmic yet subtle approach to playing the double bass, sometimes plucking the strings and occasionally using his bow to underscore Westberg's fleeting melodies, but also using the instrument in unconventional ways to generate sound. A feeling of weightlessness prevails throughout the aptly-titled First Man in the Moon. Even at their most abstract however, these five improvisations-turned-compositions remain tangible, lively, and joyfully explorative. It is a record that you wouldn't expect from either of these musicians, but the logical result of two idiosyncratic minds sharing not only space and time, but also their respective visions with each other.

PILGRIM, THE Walking Into The Forest (Repress) LP
Repress of the debut album with cover restyling and two brand new bonus tracks. The Pilgrim is an acoustic, psychedelic, melodic, folk project created by Gabriele Fiori already front man of the heavy rock band Black Rainbows and garage fuzz band Killer Boogie. The Pilgrim started to nebulously take shape as an idea for a solo-project few years back, something different than the hard-driving psychedelia and garage heavy rock for which he'd already been so revered. The first album Walking Into The Forest has been a surprise success while selling out in one year and receiving the attention of many devoted followers who are waiting impatiently for the second chapter. ...From The Earth To The Sky And Back (HPS 141CD/LP/LTD-LP/S-LP) will see the light, a sophomore album which has big expectations.

WEDGE Like No Tomorrow CD
Wedge's new release Like No Tomorrow makes for an unholy trinity of Wedge albums in the Heavy Psych Sounds Records back catalog. The Berlin-based power trio once more is driving their musical Wedge in between many different genres: Garage rock turns progressive while psychedelic guitar lines are tripping over hard rocking riffs. For fans of Deep Purple, MC5, Led Zeppelin, or Humble Pie this album is a sure shot. But unlike beloved rock records from around 1971, Like No Tomorrow has one huge advantage: It's brand new and the eight tracks, ranging from three to nine minutes, deliver a fresh, unspent and unmistakably unique taste to the rock n' roll menu. In the tradition of bands like The Raconteurs, The Hellacopters, Graveyard, or Wolfmother, Wedge are building on that vintage vibe we all know and love but evolve their very own thing and are able to connect it directly to here and now. Lyrically the tunes are picking up on our zeitgeist, dealing with topics like digitalization, mass migration, and current social issues among others.

EMIKA & PAUL FRICK In Parallel 12"
Emika and Paul Frick collaborate and make magical music from pianos, a vibraphone robot and synths that play themselves. Their music feels like rainbow drops, raining color, light bouncing from crystal gemstones. Reminiscent of Erik Satie, Laurie Anderson, with a melodic glitchy nod to Aphex Twin. This is music that channels some seriously beautiful light. It's a great record to both wake up to and reflect under the moonlight. CNCPT brings the Berlin experimental techno vibes, turning them into what they perhaps should have always been (if Emika and Paul Frick weren't so in love with sound art minimalism). A perfect match for the flipside. A very satisfying A and B realization on the vinyl. Includes digital download, score book, and synth midi files. Pink vinyl.

Once you get to the deranged Satanic prog rock of 'Magic And Ecstasy,' it hits you: this is the craziest we've ever heard Morricone. And it's amazing. IGGY AND THE STOOGES Metallic K.O. LP
Limited restock. "Iggy and the Stooges Metallic K.O., the original 1976 album -- the notorious 'Last Ever Iggy & the Stooges Show'! Metallic K.O. is the remarkable album of Iggy & The Stooges confrontational 'last ever gig' (until their reunion almost 30 years later). Effectively the fourth Stooges album with then brand new and unheard songs, it was released in 1976 three years after Raw Power while Iggy was in limbo. Soon after the gig Iggy checked into a mental hospital. The sound of kamikaze Iggy provocatively abusing his audience and then dodging eggs and bottles thrown by a biker gang enhanced Iggy's reputation in the embryonic punk scene as the Punk Godfather. Nothing like it had been heard before. It became a must-have album in the energing punk scene and out-sold the first three Stooges album. It is now re-issued on vinyl with the original LP track list -- previously it had been extended to a double-CD with the complete 1973 & 1974 shows it was taken from. In the 2007 CD re-mastering, an original tape-speed error was discovered and corrected - so now for the first time on vinyl the album can be heard at the correct pitch. The album contains Iggy Pop's story of the events surrounding the gigs as well as contemporaneous reports from Nick Kent, Giovanni Dadomo and Lester Bangs. An essential album in Iggy's history. Nick Kent said: 'I'm convinced that side two is a masterpiece' and Lester Bangs said: 'It's the only rock album I know where you can actually hear hurled beer bottles breaking against guitar strings'."

BERTONI, MARTINA Music For Empty Flats LP
Cello player and electronic artist Martina Bertoni's new album Music For Empty Flats delivers masterfully crafted experimental ambient/drone. Martina Bertoni is a Berlin-based cellist and composer. she started playing the cello at a very young age. classically trained, Bertoni's career soon developed around experimental and film music where her cello has been featured in numerous records, soundtracks for awarded movies and TV series and collaborations, among others with Blixa Bargeld and Teho Teardo with whom she recorded several albums and performed at many prestigious festivals all around the globe. The core of her solo work is based on deconstructing the relationship with her own instrument by combining acoustic sound, repetition, analog and digital synthesis. after the EPs In A Paradise You Would Be Happy (2018) and The Green EP (2019) she released her critically acclaimed full length album All The Ghosts Are Gone with the Reykjavík based label Falk in January 2020. On her new album she continues to explore the sonic possibilities of her instrument which she uses as sound source -- sounds which are then processed, adding reverb, feedback and sub-bass frequencies and thus crafting sonic sculptures, rich of atmospheres and frictions. "The inspiration for the title Music For Empty Flats comes from a fraction of time during last winter, while I was visiting Iceland. I had the strange opportunity to spend lots of time listening to music, alone in a brand new but unoccupied -- therefore completely naked -- empty flat in the suburbs of Reykjavík. it was Christmas, it was constantly dark, outside there was snow, inside there was this strange dystopian empty space in which I could listen to my favorite pieces of music in complete solitude. this is when I started sketching the new record." says bertoni. The resulting seven new tracks deliver masterfully crafted experimental ambient/drone, dense and intense but fragile and sensitive at the same time. Recommended for fans of: Hildur Guðnadóttir, Giulio Aldinucci, Lawrence English.

ALTERAZIONI VIDEO/GIOVANNI DE DONA Photons LP
Unprecedented submolecular laser class 4 electro session, recorded in Physics Dept., Freie Univeristät Berlin, in 2005. The modern photon concept was originated by the work of Albert Einstein at the beginning of XX century, when he elaborated the relativity theory, in 1905. To celebrate the centenary (2005) of that singular event, the AEM -- "Casa dell'energia" of Milan -- organized the presentation of a dedicated installation and a live performance by the artistic collective Alterazioni Video. To develop this photonic work, they went to the physics laboratory of the Freie Universita?t in Berlin. Together with Giovanni De Dona?, then researcher Markus Gu?hr (now director at Potsdam University after his experience at Stanford) carried out his research using a class 4 laser. The class 4 is able not only to pierce the retina, but also to break the bond that holds the oxygen molecules together, thus generating flashes of light and powerful micro-couplings with interesting rhythmic flaps. The session involved a certain risk, the atmosphere was naturally electrified, and under the supervision of Markus it was possible to trigger the laser through a drum machine in order to control these bursts and use them as rhythmic units. Improvising a unique session of electro to all effects properly sub molecular, minimal electronic sounds interacted with the rhythms of the matter stimulated by the laser while producing light phenomena. The "Waterlaser" track in particular was created by concentrating the laser focus on a water surface, and documents the background sound given by the splitting of the molecules of the liquid. This experimentation on the border of art and science goes beyond the reductionism given by the programmed structures of the explosions, and highlights the obscure aspect of indeterminacy revealed by uncontrollable explosions. This took place because of a physical principle that we could touch with our hands, which brought science closer to the aesthetics of magical realism, as we could experience with our eyes and ears. Recorded with room microphones, and the balance was all-in-all positive: no one injured, a professional digital camera burned for daring to linger too long in framing the focus of the explosion of molecules. A recording that is now presented in this record 15 years later. The B side features Chris Mitchell with bass-influenced kinematic interpretation using parts from the session. The recording of the next Milanese public session was lost in the black hole of the RAI archives.

SENYAWA Alkisah LP
Alkisah is the new album by Indonesian duo Senyawa. Alkisah is co-released by a multitude of independent record labels from all over the globe each with different packaging and design, with multiple version of remixes by various artists. Senyawa is an experimental music duo made up of Rully Shabara (extended vocal technique) and Wukir Suryadi (homemade instrument). The music that they create is a combination of extended vocal technique and a homemade instrument. The instrument was handcrafted by master instrument builder Wukir out of one long piece of bamboo, it is a string instrument with guitar pick-ups -- it is amplified and processed through several effects pedals but at times is played as an acoustic instrument, percussion, and string instrument. They are located in the ancient city of Jogjakarta, Central Java, Indonesia and their music is a reflection of their traditional Javanese heritage filtered through a framework of contemporary experimental music practices. Senyawa try to push the boundaries of both traditions in an attempt to mix music of the east and the west to create a new sound. As a duo they have been performing and playing together extensively for the last three years and have toured Indonesia several times over. They were invited to perform internationally for the first time at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival sharing the stage with many great musicians such as Faust, Yoshida Tatsuya, Tony Conrad, and Charlemagne Palestine. "Senyawa's music rises from the belly of the beast and crawls out of its gaping maw. Each wail, drone, and plucked guitar string from the experimental Indonesian duo evokes the feeling of deep-set hunger; every sound contributes to the tension." --Whitney Wei, Pitchfork (2018)

EARTHFORCE Earthforce LP
"I doubt whether the name Earthforce will be familiar to many, mainly due to the fact that they merely existed for a couple of years, with only a 60x copy private press cassette release in 1977 to their name during their time together. Earthforce were a musical collective out of step with the punk age, children of the UK free festival scene -- events like the Psilocybin Festival -- enjoying a connection with the earth, singing meditative songs with lyrics about the 'moontide of the pagan heart' and the 'wind blowing seaward.' The end result is a fantastic album, loosely charting the course of a day, from dawn to moonrise. The diverse instrumentation (sitar, 12-string guitar, flageolet, electric guitars, fretless bass, harmonium, doogi, synthesizer, acoustic guitar, percussion, tabla, cymbals, etc.) are used in ways which bring unexpected wonders to the Earthforce sound. And if the late date of Earthforce's existence is at all worrying to you, as you probably remember, Caedmon's legendary debut album, also released as a private pressing -- and one of the most sought-after progressive folk-rock albums from the UK -- came out in 1978. Had Earthforce opted for vinyl instead of cassette for their release, we have little doubt that an Earthforce LP would be at least as sought after as the Caedmon LP -- and so, with that idea in mind, we have made an Earthforce LP." "The first ever vinyl issue of these recordings. Comes with a 12-page full color booklet with band info, photos, and lyrics. Newly remastered by Earthforce band leader Steve Bayfield."

LION'S DRUMS Kagabas LP
Lion's Drums on the record: "In May 2019, I recorded an album at a Kogis' (Kagabas*) village, in the Sierra Nevada mountain of Santa Marta in Colombia. Kagabas are indigenous people who consider themselves to be the guardians of the Earth and are concerned by the modern world's attempts to destroy it. The mountain -- in Colombia -- is their home, it is quite literally a microcosm, a mirror of the planet in which every ecological zone is represented. The damaging lifestyles which stems from the capitalistic dogma are affecting their environment and from their vantage point on the mountain they can see how this is straining the rest of the planet. Singing is a staple feature of the Kagabas culture, it is considered as a way to connect with the environment. There are for example a song of the monkey, of the deer, snake, laughing or even death -- singing is a way for the Kagabas to feel safe around these animals and concepts and to live peacefully among them without fear and without the need to chase them away. As there's no writing, music and singing are a way to pass memory, knowledge and awareness down through generations. The ongoing ecological disaster, the uncertainty of the current times and the temptation for many of the youths to leave the mountains for the big city life make this transmission issue all the more critical . . . he recording and sharing of these songs was a recurring topic and we agreed to have singing at the core of this musical project. I was welcomed to spend a week within their community to record this album. I spent most of the time there with the Máma of the village (intellectual guides that keep the memory of the civilization) and his son Camilo, with help from Franz who has been working with the Kagabas for about 15 years now as part of the Native organization which he runs. This album combines songs, field recordings of the village and of its surrounding nature, as well as musical compositions I made in my studio. They liked the result and approved this album to be released. Fully aware of the responsibility the Kagabas have entrusted me with, I've decided to self-release this album and will give all the benefits to the Nativa organization to support its fight for the replanting of trees and getting land back."

"Heavy 'dosed' psychedelia where The Prophet takes you to the depths of the unknown Acid Land. Twelve tracks from some of the deepest underground acts in North America, from the years 1968-1972. Plenty of raw fuzz, swirling effects, deep lyrics, heavy beats, and cool hooks from these mostly unknown heroes of this long past era of musical creativity. Sourced from micro-pressed 45s and unreleased master tapes, these songs have never been compiled on vinyl before. Hear wizardry from such acts as Osceola, Hindenburg Lyon, Ark, Merriday Park and others. The very detailed fantasy cover art evidently shows 'The Prophet as he enters the mythical Valley Of The Stone Giants.' And why not? MADLIB & FREDDIE GIBBS Pinata: The 1974 Version LP
"This single LP edit of Piñata has been lacquered at half speed master by Metropolis Mastering in London for the highest fidelity and is housed in a Blaxploitation-themed cover exclusively for Record Store Day 2020. This single LP version of Piñata, the acclaimed rap album from 2014 that debuted at Number 39 on Billboard's Top 200, is presented in a unique cover for RSD 2020. The cover is a collaboration between Jeff Jank and Pathetic Pixels with inspiration found in the unique graphics and content of 1970s Blaxploitation films. Piñata is 'a gangster Blaxploitation film on wax,' says Gibbs, who came up on the streets of Gary, Indiana, the disregarded city previously best known for producing Michael Jackson. Here he is joined by Mac Miller, Earl Sweatshirt, Raekwon, Scarface, Domo Genesis, Ab-Soul and a host of others in setting his soliloquies of the streets alongside film snippets and dusted funk, soul and prog musical tapestries. This version of Piñata comes on the heels of the 2019 release of the duo's acclaimed album Bandana, named album of the year by Hypebeast, Rap Caviar, and many others, and is a welcome reminder of the undeniable musical chemistry that first catalyzed 6 years ago, elevating Freddie Gibbs and Madlib to the upper echelon of the genre's teams, and placing a classic album alongside the others Madlib issued over the years, from Madvillain's Madvillainy to Quasimoto's The Unseen." MADLIB Sound Ancestors (Arranged By Kieran Hebden) LP
LP version. "Music by Madlib arranged by Kieren Hebden. Gil Evans to Miles Davis... Holger Czukay to the ensemble known as Can... Jean Claude Vannier to Serge Gainsbourg on Histoire de Melody Nelson. That's the only way to explain the specificity of Four Tet and Madlib's collaboration, in this special album that showcases a two-decade long friendship that has resulted in an album that follows Madlib's classics like Quasimoto's The Unseen, Madvillainy and his Pinata and Bandana albums with Freddie Gibbs. 'A few months ago I completed work on an album with my friend Madlib that we'd been making for the last few years. He is always making loads of music in all sorts of styles and I was listening to some of his new beats and studio sessions when I had the idea that it would be great to hear some of these ideas made into a Madlib solo album. Not made into beats for vocalists to use but instead arranged into tracks that could all flow together in an album designed to be listened to start to finish. I put this concept to him when we were hanging out eating some nice food one day and we decided to work on this together with him sending me tracks, loops, ideas and experiments that I would arrange, edit, manipulate and combine. I was sent hundreds of pieces of music over a couple of years stretch and during that time I put together this album with all the parts that fitted with my vision.' --Kieren Hebden AKA Four Tet"

PAPATHANASSIOU, VANGELIS Amore LP
2021 restock. Monster Melodies present the original soundtrack of Amore (1973), a film by Henry Chapier, composed and performed by Vangelis Papathanassiou. An unreleased recording dating from July 1973. Vangelis Papathanassiou was the composer of the group Aphrodite's Child, he composed the band's music and the songs of Demis Roussos. Later Vangelis became famous for the soundtrack of the film Chariots of Fire (1981). In 1974, Henry Chapier after several atypical movie, An American Summer (1968), Sex-Power (1970) and Hi, Jerusalem (1972), directed the fiction film Amore. Here is an extract from the Divan d'Henry Chapier interview with Papathanassiou directed by Jean Claude Longin 2011: "This is happening in a city constantly threatened with death. At the time, I thought, there were a lot of documentaries and that I would do it differently. I imagined Venice in the guise of a heroine, a very beautiful woman, Sonia Petrovna, a girl of the Venetian aristocracy ailing, representing a page of history that has passed. But the fact remains that in the frame, in the subject, there was a little journalistic approach. Also because one of the actors, Daniel Quenaud, was presumed to be a reporter, sent to consider the merits of an architectural plan which would save Venice. So in the agreement, there is a slight journalist contamination. Otherwise there was also a love story... I think it's more of a fiction film than a documentary nonetheless." Chapier had this to say about going about the score: "The first time, it was at the Olympia, at the band's concert. I found the music to be trippy and wonderful, I, who above all, loved the Pink Floyd. I thought the Pink Floyd, I could never get them for my films. So I stormed in backstage at the Olympia, I said to Vangelis, 'Listen you are made to be an independent composer.' Things clicked between us instantly and so I asked if he wanted the script. He told me, 'no, we will see, me, I improvise from images.' This is a technique that is practiced today, but back then, it was unheard of. We did not have people like him, who recorded the sound on sixteen tracks, playing all the instruments themselves and who already had in mind how they would edit the soundtrack." Colored vinyl. Includes unpublished photos, the film poster and a postcard.

SATAN Satan LP
2021 restock. Monster Melodies present the legendary album Satan, an absolute must-have in terms of French progressive music, recorded in 1973 and never before released. In 1968, in Le Mans (a town in the west of France in Les pays de la Loire), some young students, planning to become teachers, started a band under the name The New Rainbow. Like many young musicians at the time, they enjoyed English blues and were fans of Pink Floyd, Soft Machine and Led Zeppelin. Quickly, they changed their name to Heaven Road and started to become famous west of France, playing live frequently. After playing covers, they wrote their own compositions and delivered a very good show at the same level of any professional band. In Paris, they won three contests in Le Golf Drouot (the mecca of the French rock at the time) and were declared the best non-professional French band of 1972. Playing at the festival, the band started to hang out with big names from the French rock scene, like Variations, Magma, Il Etait Une Fois, Catharsis, Ange and Dynastie Crisis. In 1973, they decided to be a professional band and change their name to Satan. They produced a unique music between hard rock and progressive and delivered intense shows, inspired by the world of sci-fi and literature, with musicians wearing make-up and strange costumes. But despite the fact that they played before the English band Caravan in 1974 and had an appearance in local TV show, the band always suffered from financial difficulties. For this reason, they created the more commercial band Ciel D'été with the intention of playing exclusively in the ballroom circuit. With the financial proceeds from Ciel D'été performances, they went to a studio in Angers twice - the first time to record two commercial tracks for Ciel D'été, and the second time to record tracks for the future album by Satan which had been performing for more than three years at that point. But at the time, they couldn't find a record company to publish their record. Satan collapsed in the middle of 1976, joining the cohort of musical project killed by the French musical industry - an industry which was preoccupied with making easy money by already successful English and American music and producing very dispensable French music, marketed commercially. Comes as colored vinyl; Includes a poster and inserts; Edition of 1000 (numbered).

CHILTON, ALEX Take Me Home And Make Me Like It LP
2021 restock. Take Me Home And Make Me Like It comprises unrehearsed, first-take recordings by Alex Chilton, recorded in 1975. Notes by Alex Chilton and producer Jon Tiven; 180 gram vinyl."This is music performed with some of the most callous abandon ever to have been allowed in a recording studio. Many of these tracks have a raw cinéma vérité atmosphere applied to recorded rock and roll. My own performances seem to be either obnoxious or attempting an insufferable cuteness, but often they achieve a compelling electricity in their spontaneous excitement. We recorded over a few days in the fall of 1975. I was very into a loose, unrehearsed first take sort of approach to recording music. I learned from producer Jim Dickinson the method of throwing a very impromptu rendering of a song onto tape. . . . This method gives a fresh, sometimes anarchistic quality to the performances. The first day of the sessions was approached in this way. The second day went according to the producer's more conservative method of planning and rehearsal. All in all there is some hot, untamed rock and roll on this disc." --Alex Chilton, 1992."This record is meant as an addendum to Singer Not The Song (1977) / Bach's Bottom (1981) and not a substitution. The idea that somebody would be interested in anything beyond what had already been released is lunacy considering the underwhelming reaction the record industry had to it at the time. When Munster asked if I'd like to take a look at releasing anything that wasn't out previously, I had to say yes. Now you have it, all the contents of the first crazy night of recording, plus some new ways to look at some of the other material. . . . It's sort of similar (not musically, but in terms of the producer/artist relationship) to the Blowin' Your Mind! album by Van Morrison (1967) -- you can sense the underlying tension, and not every track is a 'success', but it is mighty powerful. . . . Alex was not about melody at the time, he wanted to repudiate his Big Star work and make a sinister record that threatened people. Without half trying, Singer Not The Song did accomplish that. It became one of the first punk rock/new wave records, the very first EP for the genre." --Jon Tiven, Jan 2017

"Jamaican reggae duo Dave and Ansel Collins recorded and released their reggae debut album Double Barrel in 1971. The single 'Double Barrel' topped the UK and Jamaican charts and the follow-up 'Monkey Spanner' also enjoyed international success. 'Double Barrel' was sampled by hip hop artist Special Ed and two of Dave Barker's introductory exclamations ('Don't watch that, watch this!' from 'Funky Funky Reggae' and 'This is the heavy, heavy monster sound!' from 'Monkey Spanner') were quoted by vocalist Chas Smash, in the introduction to the Madness single, 'One Step Beyond'. All of the songs on the album were written and produced by Jamaican heavyweight Winston Riley and it was the first record that legendary drummer and percussionist Sly Dunbar played on. Shortly after the Double Barrel release Dave and Ansel split-up. Musica Per Immagini present the first vinyl release of Detto Mariano's Delitto Al Ristorante Cinese, the second original soundtrack in the so-called "delitti" series. It's another classic iteration of the crime-comedy films that came out of the partnership between director Bruno Corbucci and actor Tomas Milian, a special connection that had started with the great success of Squadra Antiscippo (1976) and was followed by eleven more pictures, all centered on the character of Nico Giraldi, a former criminal who, while having become a cop, was unwilling to give up his in your face attitude and the Roman slang of the city's thieves. The score by the Italian composer is a mix of sounds characterized by a unique investigation of musical timbre. Nine tracks that cross the entire sound spectrum: electronic pulses, funk rhythms, jazz, and Mediterranean sounds, and some oriental atmospheres.

PHRYDDERICHS PHAELDA Bruchstuecke LP
Limited restock. Notes On A Journey present a reissue of Phrydderichs Phaelda's Bruchstuecke, originally released in 1981. Even those of you who are already familiar with the label's concept of rediscovering music which has unjustifiably been lost, overlooked, or forgotten will be surprised by the reissue of the six-track-record Bruchstuecke LP by free-jazz artists Phrydderichs Phaelda. This band was a short living school band project of the Gymnasium Voerde Mitte (West-Germany) led by pianist and music teacher Friedrich Schepers joined by other teachers and students: Hans Klimek on bass, Lutz Leonhardt on drums, Wolfgang Kulawik on guitar. In 1975 they went to the studio to record six instrumental tracks in a style that could be best described as jazz/fusion with hints of R'n'B and rock, which are brimming with crisp snare drums played in polyrhythmic and ever-changing patterns and tempos. Alongside that, the astounded listener gets to enjoy thrilling electric guitar lines and breathtaking electric piano excursions together with ultrawarm and elaborate bass guitar parts. All this is held together by the four musicians great overview and ability to improvise and react spontaneously to their fellows. This creates a kind of magic which is rare to hear in music these days. Stefan Leisering and Juergen von Knoblauch, the two record digging members of Jazzanova have immediately understood the unique quality of Bruchstuecke and decided to re-release this overlooked masterpiece. In the course of the original release of this album in the early 1980s only a small amount has been pressed. Now this reissue on Notes On A Journey provides this gem to a larger audience -- to people who share a great interest in the remarkable development of underground jazz in Germany during those years. 180 gram vinyl; Old school tip on cover; Includes download card.

Hand in hand, here we cry our rage: summoning a lament into the ether, a divine androgynous force, a transcendental purge of the dizzying chaos of post-truth Britain." --Gazelle Twin & NYX.Gazelle Twin & NYX, electronic drone choir, have announced details of their debut release, Deep England, an eight-track album via NYX Collective Records. Rooted in English pagan and sacred music, Deep England is an electronic-choral expansion of Gazelle Twin's 2018 album Pastoral (AGMR 035CD/AGMR 036LP). Here, tracks from Pastoral, an album whose political themes have only intensified since its original release, are radically reworked and presented alongside original compositions by NYX, Paul Giovanni, and William Blake. MUHARAM, SITI Siti Of Unguja LP
2021 repress; LP version. Includes printed inner sleeve. Siti Of Unguja tells the story of pioneering women, of the "golden voice" of Siti Muharam, heiress to the singular legacy of her great grandmother, the mother of taarab, Siti Binti Saad. On The Corner Records teases this first taste of a landmark recording that the label embarked upon two years ago on Zanzibar. Siti Of Unguja has a transformative atmosphere, brimming with romance, passion and protest. Zanzibar is an island archipelago that lies six degrees south of the equator and 30 miles off the East African coast out in the Indian Ocean. It is known for its spices, traditional Dhow sailing boats, and being a mercantile trading capital of Swahili culture. The modern history of Zanzibar can be animated through the life and legacy of one artist, Siti Binti Saad. Born in 1890 in the small fishing village of Fumba, on Unguja (Zanzibar's largest island), she became the first Zanzibari recording artist and her recordings sold in tens of thousands across the Swahili world. The tracks recorded for Siti Of Unguja demonstrate Siti Binti Saad's eclectic influence on Zanzibari taarab and her great granddaughter, Siti Muharam imbues the compositions with feeling. Siti Muharam's golden voice carries the poetry and invents a timeless passion. It is Muharam's deep humility and love that brings the spirit of these two women together. With Sam Jones at the controls, taarab's conservative layers were opened up and given more than a little wiggle room. Under the direction of Matona, the recording of this album paid homage to Siti Binti Saad's innovations by bringing back the percussive Kidumbak style of music that originated on the streets of Zanzibar. By stripping back the typically dense string section of taarab a space was created for Muharam's beguiling timbre that is gilded with emotion. Liner notes by Pete OnTheCorner.

KARIJORD & JON EKSTRAND, REBEKKA I Am Greta LP
First pressing on red vinyl, exclusive for the USA. Unique composer duo Rebekka Karijord and Jon Ekstrand create compelling, hybrid score to intimate portrait of teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg. I Am Greta, the intimate Hulu documentary by Swedish director Nathan Grossman, tells the story of teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg through compelling, never-before-seen-footage. Starting with her one-person school strike for climate action outside the Swedish Parliament, Grossman follows Greta in her rise to prominence. The film culminates with the extraordinary wind-powered voyage across the Atlantic to speak at the UN Climate Action Summit in New York. To musically accompany Greta and the children of the Fridays for Future movement on their journey, composers Rebekka Karijord and Jon Ekstrand spent time searching for the right balance when it comes to how much emotional triggers the music should offer: "With the music for I Am Greta, we aimed to find a sonic counterpoint to the friction between the shy, contemplative inner world of Greta, and the unbounded energy of the natural world and climate change movement. From the start we found it useful to separate the score into three distinct voices: Greta's Voice, the voice of the natural world, and the voice of the climate change movement. We choose to work with repetition and persistent musical patterns, often illustrated through energetic string arpeggios. This we felt helped underline the remarkable persistence and focus of Greta has on the climate issue, as well as that of the relentless-ness of nature. Then we found a few places throughout the score, where more melodic aspects could be introduced and carry the story through its dramaturgical journey. It allowed the melodic aspects to shine through when they are introduced. The score consists of a string octet, modular synthesizers and a voice instrument built by Rebekka of 25 unique singers sampled in their full range. Our soloist on the soundtrack is the cellist Linnea Olsson, whom has a very specific airy and organic tone." "Rebekka and Jon's dynamic score to I Am Greta is huge and intimate, uplifting and melancholic, and manages to carry the emotional nuance of Greta's story. Initially released in 1988 on Creation, Christine was the opening track from The House of Love's self-titled debut album and was the song that gave Guy Chadwick the idea for the sound of the group, what kind of musicians to look for and of course, the image. It reached #4 in the indie charts with Melody Maker describing it as "shimmering with reverbed romance... a heroic anthem to doomed and incandescent love." DISCO ZOMBIES South London Stinks 2LP
It was 1977, there may well have been "knives in West 11", but at a student's hall of residence in Leicester, a packed room of cross-legged intellectuals were about to witness the debut of the Disco Zombies; Andy Ross on vocals and guitar, Geoff Dodimead on bass, Johnny "Guitar" Hawkins on guitar, and Andy Fullerton on drums. They were loud, fast and they had some witty one-liners. The four-piece added Dave Henderson from The Blazers, a chirpy power pop punk quintet. Record Shop owner -- and now Mayor Of Mablethorpe -- Carl Tebbutt launched Uptwon Records with a Disco Zombies EP. The record was shelved, but unperturbed, the band pressed on and recorded a session at the local radio station, "TV Screen Existence" was the only track that survived. The band lost Johnny "Guitar", relocated to London and took The Foamettes' guitarist Steve Gerrard with them who returned to Leicester to become a part of The Bomb Party. Steve was replaced by Mark Sutherland in what was to become the recognized line-up of The Disco Zombies for several years. By 1978, Andy Ross launched South Circular Records to release the band's debut single, "Drums Over London" and John Peel played it regularly. South Circular wasn't to last but Dave Henderson launched Dining Out. Dave and Andy journeyed to Ipswich to record the debut EP from the Peel-approved Adicts, the plan being to follow it with a Disco Zombies' single and regain momentum. "Here Comes The Buts" was the second Dining Out release, featuring the breakthrough Dr Boss drum machine; it was likened to The Cramps meets Neil Young in NME. They recorded for Dining Out the follow-up "The Year Of The Sex Olympics", backed with "Target Practice" and "New Scars" -- it never saw the light of day. By now, the Zombies had been through their dark post punk phase and "Where Have You Been Lately Tony Hateley" was a clever upbeat anthem. It was released on the Cordelia label's Obscure Independent Classics album. In 2011, the drum machine line up descended on Mark's studio, and they recorded two of their lengthier tracks: "Night Of The Big Heat" and "LHO". A few years later Andy Fullerton returned to the fold recording three more originals "Hit", "Lenin's Tomb", and "Paint It Red" for an even more limited edition ten-inch in 2018. 20-track compilation, remastered. Double-LP vinyl version comes on pink (disc one) and green vinyl (disc two); gatefold sleeve with printed inner sleeves and poster.

LEIMER, K. Imposed Order / Imposed Absence (Remastered + Expanded) LP
2021 repress; LP version. "The first phase of K. Leimer's recorded work began in 1972 with the production of the Grey Cows cassette and culminated in 1983 with the release of Imposed Order. Though work seemingly stopped following the release of I/O, Leimer continued to record and experiment with sound during what proved to be a 15-year interregnum for his Palace of Lights label. That work, never before issued, is included in this expanded remaster. Imposed Absence features ten tracks recorded in the years between Imposed Order and his return to releasing music with The Listening Room. Imposed Absence features the addition of Mellotron and early digital synths, some excursions into lo-fi and, unusual in his catalog, a few improvised tracks. Combined with the VOD double album of his earliest tape recordings and RVNG's A Period Of Review double album, the release of Imposed Order / Imposed Absence brings the entirety of Leimer's early work into view. Remastered by Taylor Deupree at 12K Mastering, the vinyl includes a four-page booklet and download card for all nineteen tracks. K. Leimer founded Palace of Lights in 1979. Leimer has been actively producing music since the mid-1970s -- his current catalog includes eighteen solo albums plus collaborative albums with Savant and Marc Barreca. His work is included in the collection of The British Library."

CORSANO & BILL ORCUTT, CHRIS Made Out of Sound CD
"Sadly, many will hear Chris Corsano & Bill Orcutt's latest LP, Made Out of Sound, as 'not-jazz,' though it would be more aptly described as 'not-not-jazz.' In a better world, it would warrant above-the-fold reviews in Downbeat, or an appearance on David Sanborn's late-night show (if someone would only give it back to him). More likely, we can hope for a haiku review on Byron Coley's Twitter timeline to sufficiently connect the various improvised terrains trodden by this long-time duo -- but if you've been able to listen past the overmodulated icepick fidelity of Harry Pussy, it should surprise you not an iota that Orcutt's style is rooted as much in the fractal melodies of Trane and Taylor as it is in Delta syrup or Tin Pan Alley glitz. As for Corsano, well, it may seem daft to call this particular record 'jazz' (because duh, it has a drummer), but to me Corsano is beyond jazz, almost beyond music, his ambidextrous, octopoid technique grappling many stylistic levers and spraying a torrent of light from every direction. Corsano's ferocity has elevated many 'mere' improv records to transcendence, but here he's crafted his polyrhythms within more narrative channels, bringing to mind his 'mannered' playing in the lamented Flower-Corsano duo. It's not 'groove' playing precisely, but it follows many grooves simultaneously, much like Orcutt's own melodic musings -- which is why they're so naturally lock-in-key here. Which maybe makes it all the more surprising that Made Out of Sound was in fact recorded in different rooms on different coasts at different times, and stitched together by Orcutt on his desktop. Corsano recorded the drums in Ithaca, NY, and (as Orcutt states), 'I didn't edit them at all. I overdubbed two guitar tracks, panned left/right. I'd listen to the drums a couple times, pick a tuning, then improvise a part, thinking of the first track as backing and the second as the 'lead', though those are pretty fluid terms. I was watching the waveforms as I was recording, so I could see when a crescendo was coming or when to bring it down.' Fluidity ties the tracks together. With a little more groove and a little less around-the-beat maneuvering, one could almost hear the boiling harmonic layers as Miles-oid in 'Man Carrying Thing,' but with new-found Sharrockian modalities, Corsano accentuating the tumbling nature of the falling notes. The Sharrock vein continues with 'How to Cook a Wolf,' its Blind Willie-esque melodic simplicity and repetition extrapolated 360-style in a repetitive descending riff that falls into Cippolina-isms (by way of Verlaine) until the end crashes upon the shore. Much like Orcutt's last solo album, Odds Against Tomorrow (PAL 056CD/LP, 2019), there's a gentler, almost pastoral flow to some tracks ('Some Tennessee Jar,' 'A Port in Air,' 'Thirteen Ways of Looking') that calls to mind the mixolydian swamplands of Lonnie Liston Smith -- but unlike Odds, other tracks ('The Thing Itself') smash that same lyricism into overdriven, multi-dimensional melodic clumps that push several vector envelopes at once in an Interstellar Space vein. With the help of Corsano, Orcutt has managed to slither even further out of the noise/improv pigeonhole lazy listeners/writers keep trying to shove him into. Looking at the back cover of Made Out of Sound, we should not see Orcutt hurling a guitar into the air with post-punk bravado, Corsano toiling behind him in the engine room -- we should witness an instrument levitating from his hands, rising on invisible major-key tendrils of melody, fired by percussion, spiraling into an invisible event horizon..." --Tom Carter

"1979's 154 represented the final tableau in Wire's Harvest released '70s triptych and was the first Wire album to be released to a universal set of five star reviews from the British rock weeklies, thus it represented the point when the British 'pop culture establishment' publicly recognized Wire's primacy. '154 makes 95 percent of the competition look feeble' wrote Nick Kent in the NME, 'Wire are achieving a lot of things other--and more recognized--names have been striving for' wrote Chris Westwood in Record Mirror (a paper that had slagged off Pink Flag). 'The album is a musical tour de force' wrote Jon Savage in Melody Maker. Many said it was the album that Bowie and Eno had failed to make with Lodger (as hinted in the RM review), it was on John Lennon's playlist. German krautrock band Guru Guru was formed in 1968 as The Guru Guru Groove by Mani Neumeier (drums), Uli Trepte (bass), and Eddy Naegeli (guitar) (later replaced by American Jim Kennedy (guitar)). By the time of Guru Guru's debut in 1970, Ax Genrich had replaced Kennedy to solidify the classic Guru Guru line up. Guru Guru were related to the free jazz scene both through their work with Swiss pianist Irène Schweizer and through Neumeier, who had already won several jazz prizes before forming the band. They were also influenced by psychedelic rock artists including Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, The Rolling Stones, and early Pink Floyd. Among the band's friends were Amon Düül, Can, and Xhol Caravan, with whom Guru Guru often jammed. ERICKSON, ROKY All That May Do My Rhyme LP
2021 restock; LP version. Play Loud! Productions present the first reissue of Roky Erickson's All That May Do My Rhyme, originally released in 1994. Roky Erickson is a legend. Former member of the 13th Floor Elevators, he was considered the white James Brown. Drug problems and diagnosed schizophrenia made him an outsider. By the '90s, he was struggling to survive on a $200 monthly social security check. In 1990, artists like R.E.M., ZZ Top, and the Jesus and Mary Chain recorded his songs for a tribute album. Erickson performed publicly for the first time in many years at the Austin Music Awards. In 1994, he returned to the studio with guitarists Charlie Sexton and the Butthole Surfers' Paul Leary to record All That May Do My Rhyme. This record was released on CD, cassette, and vinyl in 1994 on Paul Leary's Trance Syndicate Records. Notes from the original press release: "Trance Syndicate is pleased to present the first studio recording in almost a decade by one of the most gifted, most influential, most inspired singer/songwriters from the Republic of Texas since Buddy Holly. Roky Erickson is back! performing new songs and a few classics in one of the best studios in Texas, backed by some of Texas' finest musicians." ZWEIKOMMASIEBEN Zweikommasieben #22 MAG
A number of contributions in the new issue of zweikommasieben relate to the past in some shape or form, and they conjure it in different ways. An approach that seems adequate, since the year 2020 might have given momentum to a nostalgic way of looking at the world. In an interview, the Australian duo CS + Kreme talks about how they still feed off the energy of an alchemic jam they had at the very beginning of their collaboration. Similarly, Johanna Hedva takes on the past in her artistic practice and speaks about how she understands performances as "the communion with the dead, with the past." But how could what has passed become productive and how can we meet the reproach of nostalgia? Tracing connections between memories and the present provides a possible answer, as one comes across in an interview with Kamixlo. There, the artist recapitulates the long temporal reaches of the process that culminated in his latest album. The traces from the past can lead us back into the present, as they have changed the now, and following down these tracks might lead to the discovery of new pathways into the present. Yet, one should not dismiss the comforting innocence of a passing recollection. British DJ and producer Mark Lawrence aka Mala presents such examples when he talks about the early parties organized by DMZ in Brixton. And so does Chinese artist Yikii, when she tells anecdotes about her school days. The reading of this issue, then, should be both an occasion to appraise the potential of the past in the present as well as for innocently savoring a nostalgic memory or two. All content in EN and parts in DE, NL, as well as PL. 152 pages; 208x287 mm; edition of 2000.

HOLDEN, RANDY Population II LP
2021 restock; LP version. "'Godzilla just walked into the room. People just stood there with their eyes and mouths wide open.' To hear Randy Holden describe the audience's reaction in 1969 to his solo debut performing with a teeth-rattling phalanx of 16 (sixteen!) 200 watt Sunn amps is about as close as one will get to truly experience the moment heavy metal music morphed into existence. However, at last Riding Easy have unearthed the proper fossil record. Population II, the now legendary, extremely rare album by guitarist/vocalist Holden and drummer/keyboardist Chris Lockheed is considered to be one of the earliest examples of doom metal. Though its original release was a very limited in number and distribution, like all great records, its impact over time has continued to grow. In 1969, Holden, fresh off his tenure with proto-metal pioneers Blue Cheer (appearing on one side of the New! Improved! Blue Cheer album and touring for the better part of a year in the group), aimed for more control over his band. Thus, Randy Holden - Population II was born, the duo naming itself after the astronomical term for a particular star cluster with heavy metals present. 'I wanted to do something that hadn't been done before,' Holden explains. 'I was interested in discordant sounds that could be melodic but gigantically huge. I rented an Opera house for rehearsal, set up with 16 Sunn amps. That's what I was going for, way over the top.' And over the top it is. The six-song album delves into leaden sludge, lumbering doom and epic soaring riffs that sound free from all constraints of the era. It's incredibly heavy, but infused with a melodic, albeit mechanistic, sensibility. Troubles with the album's release bankrupted Holden, who subsequently left music for over two decades. It was bootlegged several times over the years, but until now hasn't seen a proper remaster and has yet to be available on digital platforms. 'The original mastering just destroyed the dynamics of it,' Holden says. 'They flattened it out. Now we got a really nice remaster that should be the closest thing to the original recording.'"

ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE MELTING PARAISO U.F.O. The Ripper At The Heaven's Gates Of Dark (Blue Swirl Vinyl) 2LP
Limited transparent blue with black swirl double-LP vinyl. Housed in a newly redesigned, full color gatefold sleeve. Nine years after its initial release in 2011, The Ripper At The Heaven's Gates Of Dark is back. The original black vinyl and CD editions sold out pretty quick, and have been a constant source of repress requests ever since. So, at Makoto's personal request here it is. It's definitely the best Acid Mothers Temple studio album from that short lived four-piece line up. With the exception of the album's opener "Chinese Flying Saucer" and it's unashamedly obvious musical references to Led Zeppelin II (hello 1969!) the rest of the album locks into a much more laid-back groove than on recent AMT releases. This dynamic shift is best displayed on the 22-minute jam, "Shine On You Crazy Dynamite" and also the album's closer "Electric Death Mantra". The band opt for less frantic explosions of electric guitar overload and fuzz, replacing those elements with a more epic, blissed-out and at times brooding Japanese psychedelia, with more emphasis on acoustic guitars, sitar, organ, synthesizer, and at times, really trippy vocals (most prevalent on "Back Door Man Of Ghost Rails Inn"), recalling the twisted psychedelics of early Pink Floyd. Yet still, their sound remains so expansive that it is easy to become totally immersed in this album. Epic in proportions, cloaked in a cosmic haze and shimmering in a synth utopia. The Ripper At Heaven's Gates Of Dark maintains AMT's status as masters of out-of-this-world music and reveals their darker side of the moon. Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. at the time of this recording: Tsuyama Atsushi - monster bass, voice, soprano sax, cimpo flute, soprano recorder, acoustic guitar, cosmic joker; Higashi Hiroshi - synthesizer, dancin' king; Shimura Koji - drums, Latino cool; Kawabata Makoto -electric guitar, electric bouzouki, sitar, organ, percussion, electronics, speed guru. SHEA, DAVID The Thousand Buddha Caves CD
David Shea's The Thousand Buddha Caves explores his deep and continuous interest in the nexus of eastern and western musical forms. The recording charts his life-long fascination with the caves and their connection to sound, ritual and Buddhist teachings. The record transposes those interests and is an evocation to the mythologies spinning forth from the caves.A note from David: "My path to the caves began when I was about 14, with my passion for reading Taoist, Buddhist and Zen texts, my love of Hong Kong films, Bruce Lee's influence, martial arts more broadly and meditation practice which has continued since that time. In 1980 the series of films The Silk Road produced as a collaboration between NHK television in Japan and CCTV in China explored areas of the 'Silk Road' in great detail and knocked me sideways. It laid the foundation for a life of exploring what these trading routes were and what the reality of the people living along it, travelers on it and the culture, music, art, history and rituals they created. My works Hsi -Yu Chi, The Tower of Mirrors, Satyricon and Rituals were all recordings based on adaptations of the myths, historical adaptations and connections to the many trading routes throughout the ancient world and its connection and relevance to current technological culture, through the process of building a new work on the structure of an existing novel, film adaptations or sets of ritual practices. The more I explored the specific history of the trading route from ancient Xian to Rome, the clearer it became that the Silk Road itself was a myth, a simplified 19th century explanation for a vast and very complex network of information, religious teachings, economic trade, spices and silks etc. that involved thousands of tribes, nation states, indigenous cultures, belief systems and spanned what only much later historically do we now speak of as the divide between east and west. The mountain of archaeological finds and research over the last two centuries is just beginning to be unraveled and the complexity of the purposes of the trade routes is exposing many new connections between the ancient realities of Africa, Asia, India, Europe and the Pacific region. The trading was contact and interest in difference, what does your culture have that we need, an economy of difference with less need to synthesize the traditions than to find practical connections to the value each culture may or may not have for another culture..."

FIRE! Defeat LP
LP version. Fire! tracking new paths and reaching new levels of excellence, still honoring their 12-year-old vow of presenting a fresh approach to improvised music. Their debut album, You Liked Me Five Minutes Ago, was released in 2009 to wide international acclaim. "The basic strategy of pairing the expressive energy of free jazz with a sturdy sense of groove has yielded something potent and self-contained" --New York Times. Between this and Defeat there´s been five albums, including collaborations with Jim O'Rourke (2011) and Oren Ambarchi (2012). No two Fire! records sound the same, but with Defeat they have taken their biggest leap so far, with Mats Gustafsson giving the flute a prominent place in the sound image, a surprising and most successful move, his both expressive and ornamental approach given ample room to breathe, especially on the two long tracks bookending the album. In places more subdued than on previous efforts, but with the distinctive bass figures and hypnotic mood fully intact. There are some lively stretches with guests Goran Kajfes and Mats Aleklint, bringing to mind their big band offshoot Fire! Orchestra, albeit on a smaller scale. For over 20 years Rune Grammofon have made a habit of releasing music that is beyond easy classification, in later years typified by Hedvig Mollestad, Elephant9, and Krokofant, but cemented by Fire! and their exploratory curiosity and deep love of music in general. Many have tried to compare the trio to other groups, but listening to Defeat you realize how futile this is. Given the above there´s no doubt there are many influences at play, but the resulting brew is in a class by itself. Personnel: Mats Gustafsson - flute, baritone sax, live electronics; Johan Berthling - electric bass; Andreas Werliin - drums; Goran Kajfes - quartertone trumpet; Mats Aleklint - trombone, sousaphone, horn arrangements.

ELEPHANT9 Arrival Of The New Elders LP
LP version. After a solid run of five studio albums and 2019's two double live albums, Psychedelic Backfire I and II, Elephant9 had taken their groovy mix of high energy rock and power jazz as far as they could. In this respect, Arrival Of The New Elders comes as a welcome and most timely addition to their recorded output. More varied, mature and reflective, don't let the self-ironic (?) title mislead you, they are as groovy as ever, but more structured and less jam oriented, with the longest track clocking in around the seven-minute mark. Rather short, by their standards. Having built a solid live reputation even before their brilliant 2008 debut Dodovoodoo, the trio boasts what is probably the strongest rhythm section in Norway, complemented with keyboard magician extraordinaire, the one and only Ståle Storløkken. And boy, does he excel himself on this album, notably with more focus on the Rhodes than before. That said, this is nothing if not another strong group effort from what has been a very tight unit straight from the outset. Seven brand new compositions from Storløkken and one from Nikolai Hængsle make way for what Rune Grammofon consider to be their finest and most cohesive album to date. Arrival Of The New Elders was recorded by trusted stalwart Christian Engfelt, with early Dungen producer Mattias Glavå handling the mixing duties. Ståle started his musical journey in Veslefrekk with Jarle Vespestad and Arve Henriksen in the '90s, soon morphing into Supersilent with Helge Sten on board. He's also a member of Møster! and Humcrush, and have collaborated with a number of artists, most notably Motorpsycho. Nikolai is also a member of Bigbang, Needlepoint and Band Of Gold and have appeared on a couple of hundred records. The same goes for Torstein, an associate member of numerous bands ranging from pop and soul to free jazz. But Elephant9 has always been their special baby. Personnel: Ståle Storløkken - Rhodes piano, Hammond organ, grand piano, Eminent 310, Mellotron, Continuum; Nikolai Hængsle - electric bass, electric and acoustic guitars; Torstein Lofthus - drums, percussion.

KIM KI O Bir, Iki... LP
"Istanbul, Turkey; Year 2006: Ekin Sanaç and Berna Göl form Kim Ki O. Sanaç plays synth while Göl hits the bass. They both come up with beats and sing. Their music is lo-fi minimal synth with a post-punk / cold wave feel. The cool / warm dual female vocals are eerie and dreamy, referencing classic post-punk as well as traditional Turkish melodies but remaining understated. Over the next couple years, the pair releases two very limited CDRs and tours Scandinavia. In 2009 they appear on Radio Resistencia, released by the great Dutch synth label Enfant Terrible. One year later, Enfant Terrible releases their first album Dans. KFJC writes 'The name of the band means 'Who is that anyway' in Turkish, and it reflects the ethereal nature of the sounds ... a lovely early '80s slow and somber electronic vibe (think Joy Division) combined with floaty, minimal lady vocals (sort of 4AD-ish like Cocteau Twins and Lush) ... sweet, but not saccharine.' The vinyl issue of Dans quickly sells out. Over the next couple of years, Kim Ki O appears on various compilations and tours Turkey and Europe several times. They collaborate with Turkish filmmakers Merve Kayan and Zeynep Dadak on the short film Elope and write music for the Turkish performance group biriken for their play Re: Fwd: die in good company. In 2013, Lentonia Records out of France releases Grounds. It inspires a followup album of remixes called Grounds Album Remixes, also on Lentonia. In 2014, S-S Records dips into the Kim Ki O vaults and finds songs from their early CDRs. While the originals were muddy sounding, the tracks used for Bir, ?ki... (Turkish for 'One, Two...') are crystal clear. The vinyl -- mastered by John Golden -- gives Kim Ki O's sound new warmth. These ten early tracks are a great addition to their catalog. Not content with music, film and drama, Sanaç and Göl are also involved in Turkey's pro-democracy and women's / gay rights movement. They strongly identify with other women in rock 'n' roll and underground culture."

WEDDING PRESENT, THE Locked Down And Stripped Back CD
Locked Down And Stripped Back features home recordings of Wedding Present classics, along with two previously unreleased songs: "You're Just A Habit That I'm Trying To Break" and "We Should Be Together". The former is the first fruit of David Gedge's songwriting partnership with Wedding Present guitarist Jon Stewart (of Sleeper fame) whilst the latter was originally written (but never released) by Sleeper themselves. This new Wedding Present version features Louise Wener on vocals. With each band member recording and filming their parts at home under lock-down restrictions, the recording process was far from easy, but the end result illustrates splendidly how The Wedding Present have adapted to the impact of COVID-19. David Gedge says: "As the summer of 2020 wore on it became increasingly obvious that At The Edge Of The Sea --my annual festival in Brighton -- was sadly going the way of other live music events. Following its cancellation, I decided to replace it with an 'online' version, presented live from my own living room and featuring home-recorded videos from many of the artists that had appeared at the festival over the years. For The Wedding Present's contribution, we picked twelve tracks to re-work in a 'semi-acoustic' style, and it was fascinating to see how stripped-back arrangements brought out different aspects of the songs. The Seamonsters track 'Blonde' was a prime example of this, with a 'just-two-guitars' approach resulting in a naïve and stark-sounding interpretation. In addition to the brilliant contributions from Louise and Jon from Sleeper, my long-time writing associate Terry de Castro fired over contributions from Los Angeles and, fresh from finishing her first Such Small Hands solo album, Wedding Present bass player Melanie Howard took over lead vocals for a version of 'Sports Car'."

PARRISH, THEO Black Jazz Signature CD
2021 restock. Arguably one of the world's most important underground dance music producer/DJs Theo Parrish lends his hands to selecting and mixing a set of jazz and funk records licensed from and originally released on the Black Jazz label 1971-1976. Revered by a wide spectrum of dedicated music fanatics, he is known for his otherworldly DJ sets, and his serious approach to DJing as an art form. Theo gives special attention to fellow Chicago musicians The Awakening (three consecutive tracks, four total on the mix), one of the best funk/fusion groups that the Black Jazz label released, and whose only output was on that label. EXAEL Flowered Knife Shadows LP
Under their Exael moniker, Berlin-based producer Naemi makes highly imaginative music that can be seen as a study in contrasts -- precise, hyper-detailed drum programming sits atop fuzzy, organic pools of ambience, virtuosic futurism is wrung from a falling apart laptop. Following a string of excellent releases, both solo and in group settings, Flowered Knife Shadows features eight productions that feel like the full realization of the project, demonstrating the artist's range and knack for vivid, pressurized productions. From the dexterous, chops-flexing "Koch Metish" to the sanguine "Reality's Sweetheart", Naemi's clarity of vision and instantly recognizable aesthetic are delivered here with remarkable potency. Frost on the window, whispers in the dark. Mastered by Kassian Troyer at Dubplates & Mastering. Artwork by Alex McCullough. Follows releases on Motion Ward, Experiences Ltd. and Huerco S.' HAUSCHKA WITH ROB PETIT & ROBERT MACFARLANE Upstream LP
German pianist and composer Hauschka returns to Sonic Pieces with music for the experimental film Upstream. Together with filmmaker Rob Petit and acclaimed writer Robert Macfarlane he has created a slow-moving dream-flight into wildness and winter through an eerie, hypnotic soundtrack of the Scottish highlands. The film, which is shot entirely from the air, follows the course of the River Dee in Scotland all the way to its source in the Cairngorm mountains, the highest of any river in Britain. The soundtrack to the film, here, is without doubt Hauschka's most brooding, deep work and he is in a much darker mood in contrast to his Oscar-nominated works for Hollywood films. The variation of cello, prepared piano, poems, sound effects, and occasional synth create a ghostly sound as if a shadow was slowly moving through the Scottish winter. One can hear a faint echo of David Darling's Dark Wood (1995) era in the empty, dark beauty of the bow -- performed by Insa Schirmer. Hauschka sheds his more rhythmic, entertaining side to reveal something new. Together with Petit and Macfarlane, he embraces the comfort and force of nature to truly mesmerizing effect. The last and shortest piece of the album "Uisge dhè" as well as the bonus track included on the download code "Here the Heart Fills" include prose poems written by Robert Macfarlane voiced in Gaelic and English by Niall Gordàn and Julie Fowlis. The naked words spoken over haunting sound recordings of the River Dee and its source, create a mystical atmosphere heightened only by sparse cello passages. A strange, beautiful and captivating album that stands alone as a truly transportive piece of work: close your eyes and travel... Upstream. Cover with laser-cut and printed inner sleeve; includes download code; edition of 700.

TELESCOPES, THE Song Of Love And Revolution LP
LP version. The Telescopes have been described by the British music press as "more a revolution of the psyche than a revolution of the sidewalk"; a thread consistent throughout a body of work spanning over 30 years. The Telescopes have constantly pushed at their own boundaries to unravel new pathways of existence, coloring outside the lines of all expectation to reach beyond the realm of natural vision. With a legacy full of eureka moments, intravenously fed through a crack in the cosmic egg, The Telescopes invoke the kind of altered perceptions that time has shown not only withstand repeated listening, but reveal something new whenever one ventures into the depths of their highly influential artistry. At the core of their being, The Telescopes are an all-embracing concern, in every sense, a constant revolution of the psyche exploding endless spores of sound, carriers of warm transmissions seeped in aural innovation that spiral around ones inner receptors to induce a series of auditory illusions that completely immerse the listener in the grip of their own imagination. The most revolutionary act we can all perform is to stand by our calling, to keep doing what we do, for the reasons we are conceived to do so, no matter what. Some call it "The New Weird" but call it what you will, it is born of love. The Telescopes are one of the very few artists that are living proof that this revolutionary act is possible to evolve and sustain free from artistic corruption. Songs Of Love And Revolution is a solar burst of trance inducing rhythms gripped at the helm by a wall of throbbing bass held in place by a swarm of encircling guitars. Lashed to the mast of this whirling dervish, incantations abound to dispel what is bound. This is the 12th album by The Telescopes, music for a four-piece ensemble that will never sound the same twice in any given environment or to any set of ears.

CONSOLIDATED We're Already There 2LP
Double LP version. Consolidated, the political dance/industrial music band from the early '90s joined again for a studio session in San Francisco last summer, resulting in a new album, We're Already There. The first release on Consolidated's own label The End Of Records. What else to expect, the new recordings are an innovating mix of industrial, to hip-hop, to rock and funk with mixtures of live instruments and electronics. Topped with left political activism and politically radical lyrics address issues such as America, Covid, and ecocide with song "The Flood", demand "Free Music, Stop America" with "Musica Sin Frontieras" and welcome guest vocalist Greta Thunberg on the track "The Ol' Mass Extinction Blues". The album starts in "traditionalConsolidatedgroove" with the song "Capitalism A.F.", a mix of beats, industrial sounds, and hip-hop. Followed by funky pop songs, danceable industrial jams, techno beats, reggae, and blues influences plus a remarkable noise track. Main musicians are Adam Sherburne (guitar/vocals) and Mark Pistel (synths/beats) backed by Lynn Farmer (Meat Beat Manifesto) on drums, who replaces the original drummer Phil Steir. The complete album is recorded, mixed and mastered by Mark Pistel at "Room 5" in San Francisco. The cover shows art paintings from Ayelet Hay (front) and William Kendall (back). On We're Already There, Consolidated plays more music than ever. "I have zero interest in being in a band, especially my own..." "I had to develop a different way to be involved with music for aesthetic and mental health reasons..." "FREE MUSIC! is not to the detriment of artists, it's literally the end of artists-as anyone perceives them in the last 500 years" --Adam Sherburne. Consolidated are known for their live performances, in which a microphone is passed among audience members to discuss, rebut, argue or elaborate on song topics. AUTUMNS Dyslexia Sound System LP
Autumns meets post-punkers Uptown. A couple of years after the Dyslexia Tracks EP, and following a volley of killer releases on labels such as iDEAL, Death & Leisure, and Opal Tapes, Autumns returns to Touch Sensitive Records with perhaps his most complete set to date. Pitching down the BPM but maintaining the intensity of his recent recorded output and incendiary live shows, Dyslexia Sound System sees Christian Donaghey turn the edit on himself with a grip of eight dub-wave zingers. Pulling from his love of On-U Sound, The Pop Group, and Public Image Limited, Dyslexia Sound System perfectly fuses dubbed-out dynamics with the tough and unrelenting electronics that has become Autumns' signature sound. Guitars squall, clarinets skronk, vocals echo, roto-toms repeat and -- as always with Autumns -- rhythm is king. Dyslexia Sound System is the sickest handbrake turn in Autumns' relentless and wired journey to date. Mastered by The Bastard. Cut by Kitaro at Schnittstelle. Artwork by Rinky. Edition of 250.

DIXON, TERRENCE From The Far Future Pt. 3 CD
Tresor Records announces From The Far Future Pt. 3, a new album from Terrence Dixon. Continuing the story of his previous two iterations on this title, it is a serene undertaking of unrivalled Motor City rhythms and sound. It finds the Detroit producer oscillating, from excursions in paradises of synth pointillism to husky storytelling and Dixon's peculiar beat work. A master in letting shapes find their form, Dixon allows the listener to wallow in recurring scenes. "Lost Communication Procedure", "Found In Space", and "Remarkable Wanderer" etch a sound world of choral vibrations and cinematic dirge. Where gaseous clouds scrape the natural sonic pastures of such environments, the hypnotized listener staggers a drunken step, moving sideways by 0 or 1 or -1 into new scenes. Not least an expert in industrial abstraction, a human silhouette permeates Dixon's sound. His ethereal storytelling portrays the heart-rending romance of "Unconditional Love" and unearths in "I'm Away In Detroit" monologuing moodscapes recalling our GPS voice assistants. "Out of Darkness" initially recalls Kraftwerk's "Geiger Counter", as from pure signal data and feedback spells an unceasing locomotive wormhole. Hazy, dense grooves drive across bleak city scenes in "We Can Rebuild Him", into the raw vibe of "Framework" and the rude stabs of "Spectrum of Light". The varying presence of Dixon's work is one of his textural signatures, at arm's length, brushing right within, and far out. The bumping mood of "Earth Station" is one such moment, close enough to isolate the diving bass somewhere within, simultaneously from afar it becomes positively gravitational. The first two records of the series are rightfully considered among the finest embodiments of contemporary minimalism, symbolic documents of Afro-futurism. This new work revives the classic series, continuing the relationship between Tresor and the undisputed master of Detroit techno into the present day.

BEHRMAN, DAVID My Dear Siegfried 2CD
2021 restock. Two CDs for the price of one. David Behrman has been active as a composer and artist since the 1960s. Over the years he has made sound and multimedia installations for gallery spaces as well as musical compositions. Sam Behrman and Siegfried Sassoon met in 1920, when Behrman, then a young writer working at The New York Times, was sent to interview Sassoon at the start of the English poet's postwar American lecture tour. In that tour Sassoon was billed as "England's Soldier-Poet." He had a reputation both as a war hero and an anti-war poet and peace activist. Many years later, each author wrote about this youthful meeting, which inaugurated a long-lasting friendship and a correspondence, mostly conducted via trans-Atlantic letters between England and America, which continued into the 1950s. My Dear Siegfried provides a performance environment in which musicians interact with texts by the two authors and with music software designed to respond to the performers' actions. The texts and the software elements are arranged as a linear thread along which the piece progresses. In QSRL (1998) a sensor listens to what the performer is doing and a computer music system provides responses to information the sensor takes in. Viewfinder (2002) is a sound installation using software based on homemade synthesizer music of the early 1970s. In A New Team Takes Over (1969), homemade synthesizer modules were used in this piece to distort recordings made off the air of press conferences by members of the new Nixon administration following the American election of 1968. Touch Tones (1979), from the early days of music done with the help of newly-available, small, inexpensive "microcomputers," made use of a kind of primitive artificial intelligence scheme. Pools of Phase Locked Loops (1972) was one of four pieces made in response to commissions to the artists of the Sonic Arts Union (Robert Ashley, Alvin Lucier, Gordon Mumma, and Behrman). The recording is from a live performance at Radio Bremen in May 1972.
