HIETT, STEVE Girls In The Grass LP
2021 restock. LP version. 140 gram vinyl; includes four-page insert with photos and liner notes. Three emotional years in the making, Be With and Efficient Space present Steve Hiett's Girls In The Grass. Pressed alongside the long-awaited reissue of his one-shot masterpiece, Down On The Road By The Beach (BEWITH 001CD/061LP), these ten Balearic soul instrumentals are of equal necessity; unrivalled beauty rescued from the fashion photographer-guitarist Paris Tapes (1986-1997). While recordings unintended for release should often be approached with caution, this is a rare case of unheard material being assembled as an indispensable and coherent piece. Girls In The Grass is something super special. The light and shadow that defines Hiett's music is arguably more compelling here. It speaks to us in a language that feels profound, yet entirely comforting and familiar. Girls In The Grass reintroduces Hiett's languid electric blues boogie, crafted on Saturday afternoons with fellow art director Simon Kentish. Kentish would cook, pour some wine, and then utilize his arsenal of technology. He'd dial up a chugging rhythm, together with some ambient pads or keyboard textures, and anchor the weightless gauze of Hiett's six-stringed touch. Hiett's guitar sings with the same clean, crisp tone as Down On The Road, animated by a carefree weekend groove. Unlike his defining album which was boiled under pressure, these subsequent sessions have all the time in the world. The naïve melodies chart a missing link between Vini Reilly's ventures into electronica and Booker T, sounding like sun-warped takes on wordless, fractured non-hits from his heroes The Beach Boys. Remastered from the previously unreleased, original masters by Simon Francis. These private moments are adorned with Hiett's singular photography and feature typically idiosyncratic liner notes from Mikey IQ Jones.

Boys Noize (Alex Ridha) starts the new decade with unprecedented momentum. Fresh off a 2020 Grammy nomination, the Berlin artist, DJ, and producer releases a double A-side reflecting a contrasting spectrum of modern techno. The grinding, hi-tech and low tempo industrial production of "Girl Crush" featuring Rico Nasty propels the ascendant rap icon into new territories of club disruption. "Buchla 100" reaches ecstasy with a recording of the rare, original, 1960's built Buchla 100 modular synth system as it breathes, morphs, and comes alive over tribal percussion. Achieving perpetual motion, Ridha's propulsion is fueled by recent collaborations with Lady Gaga and Virgil Abloh, two anonymous side projects plus a new moniker Elax, creating the Grammy nominated "Midnight Hour" with Skrillex and Ty Dolla $ign, producing both Frank Ocean's "DHL" and A$AP Rocky's "Babushka Boi" return singles and releasing the disco-drenched song "Why Not?" with Francis & The Lights. Behind the scenes, he teamed up with rap producer Kenny Beats for a grip of buzzing tracks, and joined Bon Iver's Justin Vernon and The National's Aaron Dressner for studio sessions and a performance at their eclectic 37d03d (People) Festival in Brooklyn. Boys Noize is leading the way as techno, house, and pure rave continues to electrify the music world.

Villager, aka Alex Young, is a dynamic new producer who has been signed to the iconic Boysnoize Records for two fresh new EPs, kicking off with the superb Aura. This promising artist has an arresting and energetic sound that perfectly fits in with this label and comes after years touring with DJs such as Skrillex, Diplo, and Cashmere Cat. As well as the focus on refining his ability as a producer in the studio, the Villager project is also about taking the live electronic experience to a new level, using visuals created and curated by Alex himself, and featuring a balance of DJ sets along with shows that are live and improvised, using synths, drum machines, and the latest in music technology. Opener "Vessel Boy" shows off his skills immediately: it features hard hitting drum loops and is wired up with synths, whirring machines and distant bird calls that all froth with energy. The excellent "Aura" then pairs lo-fi beats with taught synth sequences and crashing hits to really bring a new rave sound. "Chimera" shows off another side to this artist with celestial melodies raining down the face of a vulnerable, piano-laced groove that slowly transforms into a shuffling house track. "Treehouse 1" is more delicate, with a suspensory groove detailed by thoughtful pads and deft melodies that drift and float in a wide open and late-night expanse. "Treehouse 2" is the standout closer, with distorted drums and manic synths layered up into high pressure rhythms that are designed for warehouse destruction. This is a fascinating EP that covers plenty of vital club sounds from a brand-new perspective.

ROEDELIUS Wenn Der Südwind Weht LP
2021 restock. 180 gram vinyl LP version. Inner sleeve with liner notes by Asmus Tietchens. Wenn Der Südwind Weht ("When The South Wind Is Blowing") is the seventh solo album by Hans-Joachim Roedelius, originally released on Sky Records in 1981 (also known under the title Selbstportrait IV). "Where on earth does Roedelius find such a beautiful array of notes?" wonders Asmus Tietchens in his sleeve notes for this reissue. Not an unreasonable question. Roedelius, a pioneer of ambient music, Krautrock and, arguably, synthesizer pop, member of such seminal bands as Cluster and Harmonia, revels in alien worlds on this record. This is "Music to be listened to quietly," as Roedelius advised on the LP cover. Indeed, listening at low volume enhances the sense of otherworldliness quite considerably. And yet, this album can hardly be termed "spacy" nor psychedelic in the slightest. Electronic excesses are absent, aural exotica off-limits, bizarre cacophonies non-existent. The individual tracks are compact, lined up in quick succession, like a string of pearls. Wherein lies their fascination? From what distant place do they reach out to the listener? First of all, there is the Roedelian "quietitude." Even when the music is turned up, it remains quiet in character, almost as if wrapped in cotton wool. The quiet nature of this music is inseparable from the serene and tranquil manner in which Roedelius goes about creating his typical harmonies and melodies on an electric organ of decidedly limited sonic variability. He leaves in the occasional blip and electric interference or tape hiss, but nothing can distract him from the inspiration of the moment as it feeds his music. The contrast with the perfect, yet impersonal precision of minimalism could not be greater. Improvisation is the driving force of Roedelius' music. Without a trace of exhibitionism, he externalizes himself through his music with an honesty that could move one to tears. As a member of Cluster and Harmonia, such radicalism was never open to him. Südwind is an undisputed highlight in the Roedelius canon.

KLUSTER Zwei Osterei LP
2021 restock; vinyl version. Zwei Osterei is the second half of a recording session which took place on a single day in November 1970. Klopfzeichen is the first part. Yet the uncompromising Zwei Osterei surpasses the earlier Klopfzeichen album by some distance in terms of its harsh noisiness and near brutal sonic attacks. Everything that was left of the revolutionary verve of the late 1960s seems to have been distilled into this music with a burning glass: aesthetic destruction to liberate the mind and ears for utopian designs; the definitive coalescence of art and pop into something completely new; unbridled musical freedom, coupled with a love of noise. Zwei Osterei is all of this. How unsettling Kluster's music must have been for the professional avant-garde of the period (music journalists, critics etc.). Kluster turned pretty much everything associated with so-called progressive pop music on its head. No song structure, no rhythm, little more than muffled pulsation. No heroic poses, no transfigured gestures on stage. This attitude, or rather anti-attitude is particularly in evidence on track two of Zwei Osterei. Still no electronic instruments, just guitar, drums and non-musical sonic sources as Kluster unleash a sound spectacle which anticipates the industrial artists who emerged some years later. Conny Plank played a pivotal role as sound engineer with the relatively limited studio equipment available to him. His meticulous reading of the band's intentions led to the creation of pure, electroacoustic music -- loud, violent, real-time improvisation. Shrill feedback, tape echo loops and layers of sonic cascades dominate this section of the album. This was no longer psychedelic, nor "progressive." It was more like sonic warfare, waged against all musical categories and conventions. Many a listener posed the rather helpless question "What is that supposed to be??... art? Music? A happening?" According to statements made by the band, none of the above. It was simply Kluster. A lofty claim which Zwei Osterei fulfills one hundred percent. Translated, the statement is nothing more nor less than a challenge to ignore the accumulated theory of art and music, with all the risks and side effects this entails. Back in 1970, Kluster could not have known that they were setting in motion a process which would endure until the present day. But they no doubt hoped as much.

2021 resstock; LP version. "Harald Grosskopf was in his early twenties when LSD 'blew [his] reality away,' as he recalls. Born in Hildesheim in 1949, he had previously drummed in fairly conventional rock bands, most recently for Wallenstein. Their label-boss Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser was fond of facilitating jam sessions for musicians on his Ohr und Pilz label, often supplying his 'cosmic couriers' with LSD (unbeknown to them, on occasion). In one such session, the drug inspired something of an epiphany in Grosskopf: 'There I was playing the drums when, in the midst of my euphoria, I realized that I had been imitating other drummers. Suddenly a voice spoke to me: stop trying to sound like Billy Cobham or Ginger Baker. From that moment on I felt liberated, free to drum without having to shine in a particular role.' Having discovered his own musical identity, Harald Grosskopf understood that a standard rock combo was not the ideal conduit through which to express it. Grosskopf: 'I was completely in thrall to electronic music and the total freedom that it offered. This was the music I wanted to create. I knew it would be a success, the energy levels were so high.' Grosskopf consequently left Wallenstein. 'I fell into a hole at first, wondering what I was going to do. So I sold my prized drum kit and used the money to buy a guitar, amp and echo device.' A few days later, the doorbell rang. It was Manuel Göttsching, on his way back to Berlin from a tour of France. They knew each other from Berlin's electronic scene and recording sessions for the likes of Ash Ra Tempel. Göttsching invited Grosskopf to sign up for his new project Ashra and the rest is history: Ashra (Grosskopf, Gottsching, Lutz Ulbrich alias Luul) released a series of successful albums in the years that followed. It was not until the summer of 1979, however, that he finally felt ready to release a solo album. Synthesist comprises eight instrumentals, recorded largely by Grosskopf on his own. His melodies, carried along by synthesizers and drums, were reminiscent of works by Berlin electronic friends such as Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream, as well as those 'cosmic' sessions of the early 1970s -- yet each melody retains a unique timbre. Synthesist is thus regarded as a classic by electronic music enthusiasts all over the world, evoking a thrilling musical era of the past with equal capacity to excite today." --Christoph Dallach

HELDON Allez-Teia (Heldon II) LP
2021 restock; LP version. Bureau B present a reissue of Heldon's second album Allez-Teia, originally released on Disjuncta in 1975. Before making his own music in the early '70s, Richard Pinhas was a King Crimson fan. The British group has buzzed in Pinhas's mind for decades, but their greatest impact came early. When he first saw them play, Pinhas was struck by music played during intermission. "When I saw (King Crimson guitarist) Robert Fripp and Brian Eno perform in Paris later, I realized that the intermission music was their work," Pinhas said. "I didn't know that when I first heard it, but I was very impressed by it. It was the most important influence on Heldon." That influence is clear on Allez- Teia, originally released in 1975 on Pinhas's own Disjuncta label. "In The Wake Of King Fripp" is a soaring mix of string-like electronics and smeared guitar, a reference both to the guitarist and King Crimson's second album In The Wake Of Poseidon (1970). The meditative "Omar Diop Blondin", in which free tones float above a repetitive guitar figure, is dedicated to Fripp and Eno. A strong influence also comes from The Soft Machine's Robert Wyatt, who was slated to record some tracks with Pinhas for Allez-Teia until the expense of his travel from London to Paris proved prohibitive. Yet Allez-Teia -- the title a nod to the ancient Greek term for philosophical truth, "aletheia" -- is hardly a tribute album. The pieces Pinhas crafts with partner Georges Grunblatt -- guitar, Mellotron, ARP synths -- are beatific on the surface but infused with undercurrents of tension. Over four decades after he made Allez-Teia, Pinhas's admiration for King Crimson remains profound. He actually met Fripp in 1974, and the two still stay in touch. "We have a great friendship; he has been very helpful," says Pinhas. "Fripp has always been my Hendrix." Some artists might balk at admitting such strong influence over their own work, but for Pinhas it's all about respect. "In the academic world in France, you list your sources," says Pinhas, who received a PhD in philosophy before launching his music career. "So I thought it was good to say, 'Yes, we are influenced by this, and we are proud of it, and people have to know it.' The work of King Crimson at that time was very important. It's not a secret." 2018 remaster by Willem Makkee.

TENOR, JIMI Deep Sound Learning (1993-2000) 2CD
"Jimi Tenor can look back on a career spanning almost 30 years, in which time he has released more than 20 albums on such renowned labels as Warp Records, Sähkö, and Kitty-Yo. Pop artist prestige holds no sway over the Finnish composer and multi-instrumentalist. Never resting on his laurels, he continues to hone his unique sound, which draws on elements of jazz, Afrobeat, and experimental electronic music. Bureau B are excited to announce the arrival of a new Jimi Tenor double album! Following on from 2020's NY, Hel, Barca (BB 333CD/LP) compilation which showcased Tenor's early works and cuts from his first six albums, Deep Sound Learning shines a spotlight on unreleased tracks from 1993 to the year 2000. This intensely prolific period saw Tenor send countless DAT tapes to Warp Records, his label at the time, who stacked up the recordings in the office safe. Some of the songs preserved on those DATs made their way onto various Tenor LPs -- whilst others remained unreleased to this day. Jimi Tenor and Bureau B have retrieved said tapes and crafted a double album of previously unheard tracks in what is much more than a simple archival exposition. The 19 tracks on this compilation transport the listener to an infinitely vast adventure playground, where basic polyrhythmic drum machine tracks can be found alongside impetuous 303-driven minimal house sketches and Tenor's idiosyncratic future jazz compositions unfold around immersive downtempo arrangements. Deep Sound Learning documents the artist's irrepressibly adventurous spirit, illuminating a more colorful and varied spectrum across seven years than others manage in several decades. Jimi Tenor is a tireless rover and explorer whose curiosity and inventiveness know no bounds." --Daniel Jahn

RED LORRY YELLOW LORRY Albums And Singles 1982-1989 4CD
"An integral part of the UK's post punk explosion, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry emerged from Leeds with their unique, demanding sound during the early 1980s. Guided by the singular vision of iconic bandleader and figurehead Chris Reed and sideman David Wolfenden, the band took onboard elements of the burgeoning gothic outlook of the post punk era, fused it with relentlessly rigid drum machine rhythms and an impenetrable wall of distorted guitars and won a strong following, both in the UK and abroad. Their first two albums -- Talk About The Weather and Paint Your Wagon -- emerged on Red Rhino Records before a jump to Situation Two inspired a development in the band's sound and a broadening of their outlook for the albums Nothing Wrong and Blow. All four vital albums are included here, along with singles, B-sides and remixes, and chart a fascinating history through the 1980s as seen through the eyes of Chris Reed and co. A must for the serious post punk and goth rock enthusiast, and a key part of the incredible musical explosion that took place in the UK during the 1980s."

GLASS, PHILIP Itaipu/Canyon 2LP
"Itaipu, written by American composer Philip Glass, were commissioned by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. Along with The Light (1987), they marked Glass's continuation of a symphonic trilogy of 'portraits of nature' as he had recently turned to making orchestral music. The composition pays a beautiful homage to the Itaipu Dam, which is the world's largest hydroelectric dam built on the Parana River between Paraguay and Brazil. The text was written in Guarani, and translated by Daniela Thomas. The piece was first performed in 1989. This LP also includes The Canyon on the D-side, which was first performed in 1988 and commissioned by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. Itaipu and The Canyon are available on vinyl for the first time. It comes a in deluxe heavyweight sleeve with gloss laminate, and includes an insert with linernotes as well as the Philip Glass catalogue with info on the MOV Philip Glass series."

SUN RA Extensions Out, Plus: Four Poetry Books (1959/1972) 4 BOOKS
Corbett vs. Dempsey announce the release of four books of poetry by Sun Ra. Two of these were pamphlets that accompanied early Sun Ra albums issued in the late 1950s; the other two were published more than a decade later by Infinity Inc./Saturn Research. CvsD's reprints are fastidiously designed facsimiles of the original publications, marking the first time they have been available in their Ra-ordained form since they were published. An architect of Afrofuturism and one of the great musical thinkers of the 20th century, Ra's work extended far beyond jazz and even music to the realms of pageantry, performance, theater, philosophy, visual art, and literature. In the mid-1950s, he handed out leaflets and gave street corner lectures -- revisionist interpretations of the Bible and bold meditations on the status of African Americans in American society. A few years later, Ra began disseminating his poems in -- and sometimes on -- his albums. His debut, Jazz By Sun Ra, was issued in 1957 by the Boston-based Transition label, a short-lived company that sold records by subscription; this record contained a beautiful booklet, now as prized as the LP itself, with rare photographs and a selection of poems and proclamations, as well as the personnel and recording credits. Ra's Jazz In Silhouette was released two years hence on Saturn Records, the label he started with Alton Abraham, and it came with a mimeographed liner booklet -- now exceedingly rare -- that was folded, unstapled, as an ultra-economical accompaniment to the vinyl. The CvsD version folds this slim pamphlet of poetry into a slipcover with a classic photo portrait of Ra by Thomas "Bugs" Hunter on the back. Perhaps Ra's best-known book of poetry, reprinted in many alternative versions with different contents over the years, is The Immeasurable Equation; this incarnation restores the original Infinity Inc./Saturn Research version, published in Chicago in 1972 and distributed widely by the Arkestra, often from the bandstand. It features more than 60 of Ra's poems. Finally, perhaps the rarest of Ra's poetry books is Extensions Out: Immeasurable Equation Vol. II, which was also published by Infinity Inc./Saturn Research. This 8 1/2 x 11 inch book is a massive compendium of more than 130 poems, very much in step with the mimeo poetry publications of its era -- simple staple binding, one-sided pages -- featuring three photographs of artwork by Ayé Aton, a close ally of Ra's in this, the period of the Arkestra classic Space Is The Place, on which Aton plays percussion. Great care was taken to reproduce the special textured cover of this highly sought-after book. These four books are exclusively sold as a set. The first edition is limited to 1000 copies. Corbett vs. Dempsey is proud to represent the non-musical side of the Sun Ra Estate. The label gratefully acknowledges Irwin Chusid and Sun Ra LLC for the permission to release this historically rich chronicle of Ra's poetry, presented as he originally conceived it.

SUN RA & HIS ARKESTRA I Struck a Match on the Moon/Dreamsville 7"
In 1961 Sun Ra took off from Chicago -- where he had established the Arkestra, his dedicated ensemble and the vehicle for his mission to better the planet -- and with a scaled-down version of the band he landed in New York. Their first recording session was in Newark in October of that year. The Futuristic Sounds of Sun Ra, recorded for the Savoy label, is a beautiful document of the material they'd honed during a long residency at the Wonder Inn at the end of the Chicago period. Among tracks left in the vault from that day in the studio were these two great ballads sung by Ricky Murray, both of them redolent of the bright popcraft that had long been part of Ra's repertoire, with classic Afrofuturist themes of navigating outer space and altered destiny cloaked in sweet songs with tart arrangements. This 7-inch vinyl single is limited to 1000 copies, with full-color cover including a rare photo of the band with Ricky Murray. Ricky Murray remembers: "We did that at the Wonder Inn, just before going to Montreal. When we played the Wonder Inn didn't have too big a crowd but we were playing like it was a concert! In Montreal, though, we packed them in! College kids from McGill. They thought we were going to play rock 'n' roll, but Sunny said we didn't drive all this was to do that. Sunny said: 'We're going to New York.' So that was it. We had bass fiddle, drums, and about four guys in one vehicle, very tight. Ronnie Boykins' father's car broke down on the bridge on the way into Manhattan. We had an audition at The Five Spot when we first hit New York, another place called the African Room. We stayed at the Hotel Scott, a floor above Chubby Checker's room. Kinda rough when we hit New York, boy! Mean days. We were doing those songs, 'I Struck a Match' and 'Dreamsville,' also 'China Gate' and a few others that Sunny had. We had an audition also at the Village Gate I think. Marshall Allen especially liked playing 'I Struck a Match on the Moon' because he got a chance to light up a cigarette while we were singing."

Luz Azul is a group started by LA-based vocal and performance artist Anna Homler (aka Breadwoman) together with musicians Marcos Fernandes and Robert Montoya in 2007. On this record, they compose their own mesmerizing cosmic universe where the hypnotic speaking in tongue voice of Anna Homler blends together with the sound of her found toys intensified by the shamanistic percussion of Marcos and the pulsating electronics of Montoya. As fellow percussionists and sound artists, Marcos Fernandes and Robert Montoya's collaborations began in 1983 and ran the gamut from ambient to noise, rock to electronica to improvisation. Both were founding members of Trummerflora, a collective of creative musicians based in San Diego from 1999 to 2009. All three artists were active in the improvised music scene in Southern California and met at Spring Reverb 2006, an annual festival of experimental music curated by the Trummerflra Collective. At the time, Fernandes was experimenting with processed percussion as well as phonography and samples while Montoyawas exploring improvisational possibilities on the computer. Fernandes and Homler expressed their mutual interest in collaborating but it was not until the fall of 2007 that they performed a series of concerts together. Pleased with the results, they performed together again in the spring of 2008 with the addition of Montoya. There was chemistry and the trio promptly decided to enter the studio to capture their collective magic. The session yielded the music found on Luz Azul. Personnel: Anna Homler - voice, pocket theremin, sample sticks, whistles, assorted dry and squeaky objects, greeting cards, wood devil, tiny metals, motors, potato slicer; Marcos Fernandes - percussion & electronics; Robert Montoya - electronics. 180 gram vinyl; includes insert with liner notes by Tom Recchion.

HEAVENLY A Bout De Heavenly: The Singles LP
2021 repress; LP version. "Heavenly's classic singles on a brand-new compilation album! A potted history of Heavenly... Heavenly debuted with the 7" single 'I Fell in Love Last Night', followed by another 7", 'Our Love Is Heavenly', both released in 1990 on Sarah Records. Heavenly vs. Satan, the group's debut album, came out in 1991. Before releasing the critically acclaimed Le Jardin de Heavenly, Cathy Rogers (keyboard, back-up vocals) joined the band. Her harmony vocals and keyboards became an integral part of the group's sound. Before their next long-player, Heavenly released two non-album 7" singles, 'P.U.N.K. Girl' and 'Atta Girl'. These signaled a growing complexity in Amelia's songwriting, particularly 'Atta Girl', in which Amelia and Cathy sung in rapid-fire trade-off vocals. A broadening (and darkening) of lyrical subject matter was shown in the B-side, 'Hearts and Crosses', which told the story of a date rape, with an upbeat keyboard riff providing an ironic counterpoint. The band's third LP was The Decline and Fall of Heavenly (1994). Here the group were at their most commercial and at their most attuned with the growing Britpop movement. The arrangements expanded even more to include strings and a large amount of percussion, and the dual-vocal trick was used on several tracks. Lyrically, the old romantic view of love was largely banished, but the tunes remained as upbeat and joyful as ever. The group's last album was Operation Heavenly (1996). Arriving in the middle of the Britpop boom, the album contained such fine singles as 'Space Manatee' and 'Trophy Girlfriend'. Despite the closing of Sarah Records and release on Wiiija, the album was still recognisably the Heavenly sound. Shortly before the release of Operation Heavenly, Mathew Fletcher, the band's drummer and Amelia's brother, committed suicide. The remaining members announced that the band name Heavenly was to be retired."

"Following the amazing success story of Vashti Bunyan's recent re-emergence as an artist after an exile of over 30 years, comes the release of Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind, a comprehensive compilation of early recordings dating from the period prior to Vashti's classic Just Another Diamond Day album which was originally released1970. Titled after Vashti's (Jagger/Richards-penned) debut single which opens the compilation, this double-album represents an attempt to both open out and draw a line under the past, and also to try to set the record straight about the disparity between how Vashti viewed (and still views) herself against the way she has been popularly perceived. Widely construed as a folk singer -- a tag she fundamentally disagrees with - these recordings instead reveal Vashti as a pop singer, however 'fragile' and unique."

ZENIT Straight Ahead LP
Edition Hawara present a reissue of Zenit's Straight Ahead, originally released in 1986. Zenit is a jazz ensemble from Krems in Lower Austria, founded in 1976 by Hannes Treiber and Willi Langer. Their music was celebrated locally, but to reduce them to their local fame would be a shame: after all, their first two LPs, Stimmungswechsel (Change of Moods) (1982) and Früchte (Fruits) (1983), quickly gained them a much wider audience of discerning listeners. Arguably, however, Zenit's third and final LP, Straight Ahead, is the most special of their records. It initially came out in 1986 on the producer's label Spray Records, and is today one of the hardest-to-find Austrian jazz records. Its centerpiece is the infectious slow-motion disco piece "Waiting", with vocals by American jazz singer Linda Sharrock. Effortlessly bringing together pop, soul, and new age vibes, this is a record that is as unique as it is difficult to date. Does it sound like from it's the '80s? Maybe. But it could also be from the future.

WORD, THE Collected Works 12"
The Word is one of the better kept secrets of 1980s Austrian disco music. Yet, once you put the needle on this record, you notice that it sounds oddly familiar. The awe-inspiring signature piece "Lobster" has the same analog, slow-moving aesthetic as Zenit's timeless "Waiting", featured on Edition Hawara's first release (EHAW 001LP). The same goes for the three other wonderfully unconventional, proto electronic songs: "Easy", "All My Life", and the eponymous "The Word". And there are even more commonalities with Zenit's LP: the vocals are Linda Sharrock's, who here teamed up with Karl "Charly" Ratzer and Peter Ponger, the twin brother of legendary Falco producer Robert Ponger. The result of this collaboration is, well, also quite legendary. How this kind of sound emerged in Vienna in 1984 is still a bit of a mystery, but clearly all the stars were aligned when Sharrock, Ratzer, and Ponger were jamming in the studio. Just as there are very few lobsters in landlocked Vienna, there are very few records like this out there. All four tracks were originally taken from the band's debut and second EP, released between 1983 and 1984. The original EPs has been discontinued and second-hand copies of the original pressing are expensive.

CRACY COCONUTS Rubberdub Dance 7"
Of course everyone knows Kurt Hauenstein, aka Supermax. He was one of the few Austrians to shape the sound of late-1970s disco, performing and selling records around the world. Not many know his daughters Judy and Nicola, however, and the fact that they in 1987 wrote a song that they recorded together with their father. Well, here it is: Cracy Coconuts, "Rubberdub Dance" -- a true Hauenstein family affair. Edition Hawara re-release this super rare 7" that proves, once and for all, that Austrians can excel at digi-dub. Timelessly tropical and beautifully bouncy, its vibe is quite different from the iconic Supermax productions. Here, Judy and Nicola's sweet yet confident vocals replace the moustache-driven sotto voce singing that you love Supermax for. The result is oh-so-catchy and bound to be a hit.

2021 repress. In the late nineties, the budding producers Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani bonded over their shared love of slower tempos and '70s and '80s New York City club culture. Obsessed with record digging and the sounds they heard on late-night "club classics" radio shows -- and turned off by current releases they saw as artlessly "updating" sublime disco by sampling, filtering, and subjugating them with huge kick drums -- the duo set out to discover how their favorite old 12" records were made. They naturally gravitated towards extended dubs of songs -- full of strange mistakes and echoing backing tracks -- instead of the better-known vocal versions. Lacking the big budgets and gear that made so many of their favorite classic records come together, they were forced to take a guerrilla approach. They reprogrammed their techno-oriented arsenal of secondhand synths and samplers, using novel digital recording technology to capture live instrumentation and prioritized mood over hooks, and the resulting music was just wrong enough to sound unlike anything else being released at the time. After just four underground 12" releases, the duo -- now well-known as Metro Area -- released their first and only album, Metro Area, in the fall of 2002. Fifteen years later, it's time to celebrate the culmination of their shared history and inspiration once again. Environ is proud to present the 15th Anniversary Edition of Metro Area, Metro Area's eponymous debut album, meticulously remastered using the original source tapes and generously spread across three slabs of vinyl. The 12-track triple LP and included download card combines all the songs from both the original US and licensed European releases, and features new commemorative artwork unique to this edition.

RESENDE & INDEX, MARCOS Marcos Resende & Index CD
Beyond their highly sought-after 1978 album Festa Para Um Novo Rei -- home to the mystical jazz-funk classic "Vidigal" and released on Philips' iconic Musica Popular Brasileira Contemporanea series (MPBC) -- little is known about Marcos Resende & Index, even to aficionados of obscure Brazilian music. Far Out Recordings present their previously unreleased self-titled debut album from 1976, contributing a crucial missing work from the glory days of progressive Brazilian instrumental music. Born in Cachoeiro de Itapemirim, Brazil in 1947, Marcos Resende was a prodigious musical child. In spite of his immense musical potential, he travelled to Lisbon in the '60s to study medicine. Yet continuing to explore his musical passion on the side, he formed a trio which went on to open for Dexter Gordon at the Cascais Jazz Festival in 1971. From here he formed the electronic oriented prog-jazz group Status, who opened shows for the likes of Elton John, Phil Woods, Stan Getz, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, but in spite of their relative live success they have no known recordings. Now established as a highly regarded keyboardist, composer, and innovative electronic musician, Resende returned home to Brazil following Portugal's Revolução dos Cravos in 1974. Inspired by US jazz and British progressive rock he'd experienced while residing in Europe, Resende went all out acquiring a keyboard arsenal to be reckoned with, which included the Prophet 5, Yamaha CP-708, and Mini Moog. Determined to integrate his newfound inspirations with Brazilian rhythms and jazz traditions, he formed a new quartet with Rubão Sabino (bass), Claudio Caribé (drums) and the late great Oberdan Magalhães, of Banda Black Rio and Cry Babies fame. Marcos Resende & Index recorded their self-titled debut at Sonoviso Studios with the legendary sound engineer Toninho Barbosa, known as the "Brazilian Rudy Van Gelder". Marcos Resende & Index has both the timeless ethereal qualities as well as the progressive and futuristic ideals of Light As A Feather. Marcos kept the tapes from the Sonoviso sessions safe and presented them to Far Out's Joe Davis at his home in Lisbon in 2018, but only after 25 years of Joe pleading to hear them. Marcos has worked closely with Far Out towards restoring these recordings over the last two years, but tragically passed away after a battle with stomach cancer on November 12th, 2020 at the age of 73.

NEVES, ANTONIO A Pegada Agora E Essa CD
From samba and bossa nova through to baile funk, with carioca expressions of jazz, rock, and hip-hop in between, the sound of Rio de Janeiro, while continually evolving, has always held an unnamable quality which reflects the magic and mystique of the city itself. Multi-instrumentalist and arranger Antonio Neves is the city's newest trailblazer: the enfant-terrible of Rio's music scene, leading a vital and diverse constellation of both emerging and well-known artists advancing the city's musical legacy. "It all started one sleepless night, after watching a Quincy Jones documentary." Inspired by the legendary music magnate, Neves began writing a list of artists residing in Rio de Janeiro "people that I admire, that I consider geniuses of their instruments, who share with me affinities, anxieties and projects." The list included some of Brazil's most revered living musicians who Neves has worked with in recent years: Hamilton de Holanda, Leo Gandelman, and Dorival Caymmi. Neves also called on some of Brazil's most exciting emerging talents including Alice Cayymii and Ana Frango Eletrico. A Pegada Agora É Essa (The Sway Now) is Neves's second album: a vibrant portrait of the current Brazilian music scene. From the regional to universal, popular to erudite, samba to rap, Latin rhythms to jazz, MPB and pop to good old rock n' roll, Neves walks with fluency and mastery amongst all the musical genres that Brazil has to offer. "My offer to the musicians was complete freedom to express themselves through the songs I proposed -- classics like 'Summertime', 'Luz Negra', and 'Noite de Temporal', and compositions of my own -- creating a space of authorship for the band and the guests. A space for inventions, purges, delusions, laughter. The idea was to bring the freedom of jazz crossed by Brazilian rhythms, such as the traditionals "Partido Alto" ("A Pegada Agora É Essa") and "Jongo" ("Jongo no Feudo" and "Luz Negra"); rhythms of African-Brazilian religions like Candomblé ("Noite de Temporal") and Umbanda ("Forte Apache"); and a tribute to newest Rio de Janeiro's contribution to Brazilian music, the funk Carioca ("Simba"). Features Leda, Esguleba, Alice Caymmi, Ana Frango Elétrico, Hamilton de Holanda, Leo Gandelman, and Edu Neves.

NOYES & JOSEPH ALLRED, ROB Avoidance Language LP
"There have been some very cool guitar duo LPs over the years -- Bert Jansch & John Renbourn's Bert & John, Danny Kalb & Stefan Grossman's Crosscurrents, Jody Harris & Robert Quine's Escape, Charalambides' Joy Shapes, Bill Orcutt & Michael Morley's Electric Guitar Duets, any comp of Kansas Joe McCoy & Memphis Minnie, etc. -- but there has never been one quite like Avoidance Language. It is a wild-eyed classic from start to finish. Ostensibly a meeting between two guitarists lurking around the Boston area (although Rob has since moved to Japan), Joseph's mastery of other instruments (harmonium and banjo) affords the pair a wider range of sounds than some of their precedents. But they also eschew vocals here, so that kinda balances things out. At least in my book. The album's four tracks display brilliance and variety in spades. 'Feet of Clay and a Crown of Stars' is a two guitar conversation, with notes initially slurring and sliding against each other, then spreading out like waves of sound hitting a sandy beach. It's like something you might hear inside your head if John Fahey dunked you in one of the hot tubs at Big Sur. On 'Stutter Study' Allred uses his harmonium to soften the rhythmically tangled briar patch improvs by Noyes. 'A Valid Subspecies' pairs Noyes' guitar with Allred's provocatively original banjo inventions. Rob's playing on this one mixes ruminative downstrokes with aggressive single string highlighting in a style quite different from his trademark whirlwindery. Finally, on the title track, we are shown another intricate and deftly woven two guitar tapestry. It makes me imagine what Robbie Basho might have done in response to 'The Hall of Mirrors in the Palace at Versailles' from John Cale & Terry Riley's Church of Anthrax album. What can I say, but 'Wow.' Avoidance Language is one for the ages. Don't miss your chance to get ahead of its curve." --Byron Coley, 2021

MIRRORS, THE Lost 3rd Album LP
The singer and songwriter Greg Ashley has made a name for himself both as a member of notable underground bands The Gris Gris, The Mirrors, and Strate Coats, as well as a solo artist. As a fixture in the underground music scene, his musical abilities span a range of genres including garage punk, psychedelia, and folk. In addition to his own music, he works as a producer and sound engineer, previously running his own Oakland-based studio, Creamery Studio and now rebuilding his home studio in Texas. After high school, Greg Ashley took to perusing the work of the original '60s artists, immersing himself in the Rolling Stones' bluesy early material, the Beatles' midperiod psychedelia, the crazed noise of the 13th Floor Elevators, and the fuzzy surf of the Ventures. Assimilating these influences, Ashley formed a quintet called the Mirrors and released two scruffy, all-over-the-map albums. The Mirrors were Greg Ashley's post-Strate Coats (7" also available on Hook or Crook) and pre Gris-Gris outfit. In 2001 they self-released the A Green Dream LP in an edition of 500. Though hard to imagine in retrospect, in 2001 it was unlike anything else being created at the time, fusing well played, well written freaky psychedelia with groovy ballads, tinny xylophone, feng shui recitations and occasionally a confusion that approaches the Sun City Girls. Pervading it all is an acid-drenched folky psychedelia that would make fellow Texan Roky Erickson proud. This Lost 3rd Album is the missing bridge between The Mirrors and what was to come in The Gris Gris. Includes full size double-sided insert; edition of 300. "There have been hundreds of bands since 2001 that have attempted to sound this good at being high. None have." "You know that old 'This is your brain on drugs' egg-frying commercial? Well, these discs are 10-egg omelets.""Nobody gave a sh*t about my garage band in Houston, People liked my music out here. I got to meet one of heroes, Russell Quan of the Mummies, and he was a fan of my band." --Greg Ashley

ACANTHUS Le Frisson Des Vampires LP
The entire unreleased soundtrack for Jean Rollins 1971 ultimate French vampire hippy flick, Le Frisson Des Vampires. Embryonic psych funk recordings from Parisian teenage psych combo (including members of French No-No mod rockers Unity). Imagine an early Gong/Ame Son/Soft Machine session fueled by a 1000-year old, acid-infused blood transfusion. With origins in the Parisian underground, the free press revolution, new wave cinema, the Letterist movement, French surrealism, sexual liberation and the European progressive rock explosion Jean Rollin's 1972 film Le Frisson De Vampires still stands up as one of the most original European poetic erotic horror films after almost 40 since it's cosmic inauguration. Finders Keepers release the complete freak-rock soundtrack to the most phantasmagoric celluloid moment from "The First French Vampire Director" which has been shrouded in mystery, secrecy and red wine addled memories for four decades. Originally rumored to be played by a disbanded group of teenagers and lost in the edit suite the unabridged soundtrack of improvised freak-funk, commune rock and acidik folk could have easily been recorded by an early line-up of Gong or Ame Son and released on a label like BYG or ESP. The true origins of this rare psychedelic score and its unspoken legacy via private pressed free jazz albums and collectible mod rock 45s adds to the twisted tails that unfolds via our extensive liner notes making this release yet another counter-cultural pop milestone courtesy of Finders Keepers Records. Made on a shoestring in rural Northern France with a cast and crew that draws a blood red line between the avant-garde and the pre-cert video cassette the behind the scenes story of Les Frisson De Vampires engulfs a rampant river of cultural phenomenon such as Japanese Pinky films, X-rated comic books, The Mai 68 riots, and the forward-thinking no-no generation. Complete with classic and highly collectible artwork by French illustrator Phillipe Druliet and music that will appeal to fans of J.P.Massiera, Amon Düül 1, Jean-Claude Vannier, Igor Whakevitch, Fifty Foot Hose, early Pink Floyd, and Acid Mothers Temple. Originally released in 2010 as the inaugural release in Finders Keepers' dedicated Rollinade series, the release is presented here on black vinyl.

2021 repress. "There was a time when the strength of a musician's vision transcended all labels; here is a chance to dip into that pool again, and emerge not just refreshed, but alive again with the sense that we all can live in that world again, but most importantly raise the flag for excellence. Fantastic." --Jim O'RourkeAn unholy grail of near-mythical status is finally now available in the form of this first-ever reissue. Masahiko Sato composed this elusive, sensual, psychedelic free jazz score for the stunning 1973 Japanese witchcraft animation Belladonna of Sadness (Kanashimi no Belladonna) directed by Eiichi Yamamoto. Since the mid-2000s, Belladonna of Sadness has risen from the ashes and now shines brighter than ever. Now, on the eve of its third or fourth global DVD release in 2015, fans no longer have to settle for third-generation VHS telecine dubs or stuff their wish-lists into the hands of lucky friends visiting Tokyo. Belladonna has been used as nightclub projections by clued-up VJs and been restored by discerning feminist folk singers and improv bands while influencing illustrators, fashion designers, and other creative types along the way. Original copies of the soundtrack, however, are much less likely to rear their heads, with prices literally doubling each time the original stock copies swap hands among the same Italian dealers at central European record fairs. Italian soundtracks are expensive anyway, but this one, originally released by the Italian Cinevox label in 1975, has extra credentials. Finders Keepers Records and Sato himself agreed that this record should finally be liberated among those who know the magic words. With the decision to keep this album "strictly Sato," a track from the original release has been removed -- the main orchestral love theme by Asei Kobayashi and Mayumi Tachibana -- which in all honesty is very much detached from Sato's psychedelic soundtrack. Kept intact, however, are the songs sung and penned by Sato's wife at the time, Chinatsu Nakayama, including the track titled "TBFS," which only appears on the master tapes and never actually made it onto the theatrical cut of the film (though the theme is briefly alluded to, with different instrumentation, in a cut-scene available on the German DVD release). This reissue project also marks the beginning of a longer intended relationship between Finders Keepers and Masahiko Sato, exploring his recorded work in film music, jazz, and avant-garde composition.

COS/DANIEL SCHELL & DICK ANNEGARN Mein Maschine Ist Schon/The ff BOOM 7"
From the same continental cosmic egg that hatched Marc Moulin, Marc Hollander, and Belgian synth fusion combo Placebo comes your favorite new Franco-Flemmish pop discovery. COS, where have you been all my life? Compact in name but wide-eyed in nature, it's understandable how the '70s band known simply as COS has remained trapped in the tight cracks between pop stardom and prog indulgence where other like-minded names like CAN, Zao, Neu!, and Egg have managed to squeeze into gaps of your record collection. In presenting one of the band's most infectious and potentially crossover legible tracks on this exclusive user-friendly 45, COS mastermind Daniel Schell not only breaks an unlikely new format for this lesser-known femme-fronted, electro/jazz fusion/prog pop opera/would-be disco cinematic six-piece but also sends a sonic telegram to a new generation of futurist pop aficionados ready to explore the deep realms of his band's dense, expansive and consistently rewarding catalogue. Placing the microscope over the central motif of the band's onomatopoeic 1978 triptych known as Mein Maschine Ist Schön (My Machine Is Beautiful) this very rare proposed single edit from the group's third album combines the type of warm, brooding, discoid funk and nymphish Morse code vocals that unite fans of Stereolab, Curved Air, Jan Hammer, Emerald Web, and Ursula Dudziak not to mention Schell's own close friends, the aforementioned, Hollander, Moulin, and Placebo. A prog rock 45 might sound like a contradiction in terms but with a band like COS you can only expect them to defy convention. Backed here with another deeply conceptual sliced of deep orchestral symphonic psych from Schell's short-lived FF Boom project from the previous year this suitably compact introduction to your new favorite COSmonauts provide digestible versions of some of Schell's finest moments and clears the decks for future explorations of a wider musical universe waiting to be explored. Turn on this beautiful machine and let yourself melt into the COSmix.

VA Sumer Is Icumen In: The Pagan Sound of British & Irish Folk 1966-1975 3CD BOX
2020 release. "Released in 2015, Grapefruit's 3-CD multi-artist British underground folk compilation Dust On The Nettles was widely praised, with a five-star review in The Times hailing it as 'a delight from beginning to end'. A long-overdue follow up to that set, Sumer Is Icumen In tightens the mesh by focusing on the point when traditional folksong and the burgeoning late Sixties counterculture collided, largely courtesy of seminal acts like the Incredible String Band, Fairport Convention and Pentangle. As Steeleye Span's Martin Carthy commented at the time, the scene had a strong pagan feel, dark and elemental, and progressive folk bands like Dr. Strangely Strange, Comus and Third Ear Band (who performed with the druids in dawn solstice ceremonies at Glastonbury Tor) were active at the same time as folklorists like Mr. Fox pair Bob & Carole Pegg and fellow husband-and-wife team Dave & Toni Arthur, whose commitment to the cause saw them dancing naked at a coven led by 'King of the Witches', the notorious Alex Sanders. Showcasing all of the above names as well as a supporting cast that ranges from Mike Oldfield and Marc Bolan to unsigned bands who recorded demos in a barn, Sumer Is Icumen In features four hours of Albion hymns ancient and modern, including three previously unreleased cuts. Housed in a stylish clamshell box, it includes a 40-page booklet with track-by-track annotation, numerous band quotes and some very rare photos. The result is a secret glade in a darkly pagan woodland that's peppered with invocations of corn gods, wicker men, bright Phoebus and other non-Christian deities; magickal tales of daemons, sorcerers, false knights and faerie queens; the medieval England myths, legends and traditions of the May Queen, John Barleycorn and the Green Man; paeans to the natural world and the rhythm of the passing seasons; fables of sanctuary stones, scarecrows and buried villages alongside dread stories of purgatory."

Saturations is a composition by Danish multidisciplinary artist Niels Lyhne Løkkegaard, and features a clarinet choir consisting of 19 clarinet players. Niels Lyhne Løkkegaard (b. 1979) considers his work to be a basic research in realities working within the domains of imaginary and physical sound as well as other non-sonic media, and since 2012 Niels Lyhne Løkkegaard has experimented with creating music that lets the instruments transcend their inherent sonic norms and reappear in another form by way of multiplication of sound. His work with multiplication of sound has led to numerous compositions in which one instrument is multiplied a number of times: One piece is written for nine pianos, another for ten hi-hats and yet another for countless triangles and so on. The multiplication brings out bodily timbral phenomena, interference of sound waves and vibrations, and brings out what Niels Lyhne Løkkegaard calls the sound's potential of transformation. He describes this as the quality in a musical piece, when you no longer hear recognizable instruments, but instead the individual sound, as well as the individual musician, is dissolved into the collective sound. A sonic as well as human synthesis. He explains the concept of this sound as follows: "Imagine you enter a room with vibrant acoustics, such as a cafe full of people having conversations, and when you're close to those conversations you hear the language and understand the words. If you step away from the tables, however, and stand in the doorway, you begin to lose the ability to distinguish the words from one another. Now instead of hearing the individual conversations, melts all the conversations together, and transform into a one new sound. A sound of people without words and language. Just as when you hear a group of geese squawk, or the wind in tree tops, a kind of nature given sound of people. Once the language is dissolved and the words stop making sense, what is left, is the sound."

FOAT GROUP, THE GREG Dark is the Sun (10th Anniversary Edition) LP
Recorded in Sweden, Dark is the Sun is a concept album based on themes and variations by British pianist/composer/arranger Greg Foat, who has created an intriguing blend of non-contemporary jazz sounds with classic scoring techniques. An exotic array of unorthodox instrumentation was utilized, including harpsichord, tubular bells and a 15-piece choir. With musical reference and influence from such luminaries as Bruno Nicolai, Michel Legrand, and Serge Gainsbourg as well as a firm nod towards UK jazzmen Michael Garrick, Keith Mansfield, and Alan Hawkshaw, the result is highly-listenable, enduring and fulfilling for those who like real music played with real instruments. Special 10th anniversary edition comes in tip-on gatefold sleeve with cover art in bronze, including archive pics & new liners. 180 gram vinyl; includes download card.

LP version. Edition of 300. Jac Berrocal and David Fenech have been recording music together for more than ten years now... After albums with Ghédalia Tazartès (RIP) and Vincent Epplay, they shared the stage with musicians such as Felix Kubin, Jean-Hervé Peron, Jean Noel Cognard, and Thierry Müller (Illitch)... Now they are now joined by the American improviser Jason Willett (Half Japanese) for their first album as a trio. Built around a recording session in Paris, the three musicians created Xmas In March, an album of seven new peppermint-striped favorites. The tracks are like smoldering embers, mixed with the excitement and anticipation of Santa's arrival. Jac Berrocal's sound has never been so smooth since the Hotel Hotel album -- his trumpet like a sleigh in a jet stream. Willett plays bass with a rubber band and creates an impossibly huge sound from such a tiny "instrument" (like Charlie Haden played from a matchbox). He also plays this rare wooden synthesizer called Cocoquantus. Fenech sings, plays electric guitar, turntables, and is responsible for the recording as well as mixing all the tracks. With special guest Vincent Epplay on the closing track. This is the album you will want under the tree... skirt. Joyeux Noël! Cut by Andreas "Lupo" Lubich.

As Morganistic, Luke Slater only released a handful of cuts-but among those was the album Fluids Amniotic, originally released in 1994, still widely praised today as a benchmark techno long-player. Regularly featuring in the sets of Hood and Mills, Morganistic's dark, rumbling minimalism was, as the album title suggests, the sonic equivalent of being trapped in the murky, viscous fluids of some sinister alien womb. SOLUTION Solution (Orange Vinyl) LP
"Solution were a Dutch rock band that were active from 1970 to 1983, with an additional reunion taking place in 2006. Solution is their impressive self-titled debut album, which was recorded over just three consecutive days in 1971. Blending psychedelic and prog with jazz, Solution created a unique sound. Some of the tracks, such as 'Koan' and 'Circus Circumstances' (the latter of which was based on a composition by French composer Jacques Ibert), see the band playing frantically as an ensemble, while the shorter and more peaceful 'Preview' provides a nice change of pace. The theme of 'Preview' ended up being used on later releases by Solution as well. In order to celebrate the 50th birthday of this groundbreaking album, it is finally released on coloured vinyl for the first time. It's available as a limited edition of 500 individually numbered copies on orange vinyl."

Together, they produced some of the most innovative music of the era, a blueprint for the emerging warehouse/hardcore/breakbeat scene in the UK. In the same way 1977 was a crucial year for punk's explosion, 1990 was a madly creative and truly revolutionary year for dance music, the essence of which is captured in these tracks. Picture this: a low ceiling sweating red brick basement somewhere at Marshgate Lane, where multicolored lasers, turbo soundsystem. and wacky dancers in ecstatic rush. DJs like Fabio, Bukem, or Matthew B would spin an evil blend of early hardcore and trippy NY house, with live PA set by up and coming acts like The Prodigy, Unique 3, or Satin Storm. This was universal unity, complete mayhem, and total freedom taking a country by storm, with a mutant groove that later became the grooves of all the grooves. Nearly 30 years later, it's still fresh. Produced in Satin Storm's studio (another pioneer), these have shades of deep house, techno bleeps, and rough breakbeat blended in an intuitive and innovative way.

SATO, OSAMU Collected Ambient Grooves 1993-2001 CD
Musique Pour La Danse release Collected Ambient Grooves 1993-2001, an anthology of music created by Osamu Sato, the Kyoto-born, Tokyo-based digital artist, photographer, and composer whose career began in the early '80s. In 1983, he released a cassette accompanied by silkscreen prints on Kaoru Sato's (EP-4, Vanity Records) sought-after Skating Pears label. He gained worldwide notoriety after creating cult video games Eastern Mind for Mac OS and LSD Dream Emulator for Sony Playstation, and composing groundbreaking soundtracks for both. This latter game, quite unlike anything before or after is often praised as a masterpiece that started a new era in the gaming community. "Osamu Sato remains one of the most sought-after and intriguing personalities in the world of cult gaming, a spirit that haunts those who hunt the surreal and those who clamor for more like he produced in the past" as VICE once put it. The previously unreleased and exclusive music gathered on this release explores the interzone between ambiance and a certain sense of groove and motion. Emotional melodies, deep and mystical moods, psychedelic progressions, along with electronic and organic instruments with Eastern influences are masterfully used by the composer to create tracks where the listener is always offered with a variety of layers to admire or get lost in. Some tracks fit more in the ambient category, while others are of a groovier persuasion but in reality, each track displays in its specific way a meticulous balance between both. A timeless collection of artful music that exists in a genre of its own, with cover and design created by Osamu Sato himself, this is a total work of art created by the artist who celebrates his 60th birthday in 2020. LP version comes on blue color vinyl.

VA Erotiques New Beat LP
The unforgettable soundtrack of a lost erotic new beat VHS from 1989. The year is 1989 and it's the peak of the new beat craze that swept Europe and the world with Belgium at its epicenter. Not limited to records and clubs, the new beat lifestyle was marketed to death with all sorts of fashion items, a plethora of accessories and... erotic videos. Erotica, sensuality, and sexuality have always been part of new beat's DNA, but Musique Pour La Danse's jaw dropped to the floor when the label first laid eyes upon an erotic new beat VHS deadstock gathering dust in a forgotten video store in the middle of nowhere in Switzerland. So the label did what every new beat fan would have done, they watched the video and cringed (at its low budget production values and tacky male gaze) while they were transported to 1989 Belgium, with the bodies, poses, styles, and backdrops you'd expect from that bygone era. Their ears, however, were in for a treat. The video's OST uses almost the very same track list as one of the countless new beat compilations marketed as LPs: King of the Beat, instantly recognizable among many for its yellow front cover featuring a stamp with King Baudoin's profile. That record was actually a fake compilation seemingly gathering several artists but in fact entirely composed by the same trio. It offers a lovely snapshot of various moods and styles found within the new beat genre: downright erotic tracks, proto-Goa numbers, orientalist takes on exotic sounds, tracks driven by iconic film samples, and tracks built around silly samples, such as an elephant's trumpet. And then some. That's when Musique Pour La Danse decided to reissue this compilation. While many new beat tracks have been played and compiled to death, there are still brilliant records to rescue from oblivion, and this is one of them. Remastered from original tapes in 2020 with liner notes by Geert "Dr Vinyl" Sermon. The utterly tacky front cover is a detail from the VHS original artwork. Features Iconoclass, Corruption House, Axidan, Ugly Mood, Corruption House, and Acid Aliens. Neon pink vinyl.

EASTMAN, JULIUS Unjust Malaise 3CD
2021 restock. "This three-disc set marks the first appearance on disc of the music of the African-American composer Julius Eastman (1940-1990), who died fourteen years ago under unexplained circumstances and whose musical legacy was thought lost. This comprehensive and definitive document, which comprises almost all of Eastman's signature works, will undoubtedly be a revelation for those who have thus far been unable to hear his work. In his book American Music in the Twentieth Century, composer/author Kyle Gann briefly sums up Eastman's work and its importance: 'Born in New York, he graduated from the Curtis Institute in composition and was discovered by Lukas Foss, who conducted his music, including Stay On It (1973), one of the first works to introduce pop tonal progressions and free improvisation in an art context... Applying minimalism's additive process to the building of sections, he developed a composing technique he called 'organic music,' a cumulatively overlapping process in which each section of a work contains, simultaneously, all the sections which preceded it. The pieces he wrote in this style often had intentionally provocative titles intended to reinterpret the minorities Eastman belonged to in a positive light: for example, Evil Nigger, Crazy Nigger, and Gay Guerrilla (all circa 1980). These three pieces, all scored for multiple pianos, build up immense emotive power through the incessant repetition of rhythmic figures.' Eastman was an energizing underground figure, one whose forms are clear, whose methods were powerful and persuasive, and whose thinking was supremely musical. His works show different routes minimalism might have taken, and perhaps some of those will now be followed up. This set of discs is a bold beginning to restoring to history the works of one of the most important members of the first post-minimalist generation."

WITCH Lazy Bones!! (Orange Vinyl) LP
"Pressed on opaque orange vinyl. This landmark recording from Now-Again's comprehensive overview of Zambia's premier garage-, psych-, prog-, funk-, Afro-rock ensemble WITCH, We Intend To Cause Havoc! is now available in a never before seen color variant. The audio is nigh-perfect -- restored and remastered from the original master tapes. WITCH's musical arc is contained to a five-year span and, in retrospect, is a logical one. The band's third album, Lazy Bones!!, is the band's masterpiece -- a dark, brooding psychedelic opus that makes equal use of wah-wah and fuzz guitars, that relies as heavily on the stomping feel of hard rock as it does the syncopation of funk."

EINSTURZENDE NEUBAUTEN Fünf Auf Der Nach Oben Offenen Richterskala LP
2021 repress; LP version. Digitally-remastered 2002 release. This is the fourth album by German avant-garde industrial band Einstürzende Neubauten, originally released in 1987. The bonus track "Adler Kommt Spaeter" is an early version of "Zerstörte Zelle." Considerably lower-key than all their previous releases, Fünf Auf Der Nach Oben Offenen Richterskala (trans. "Five On The Open-Ended Richter Scale"), with especially puzzling, almost country-rock track "Morning Dew," sung in English, but with moments of whip-cracking and atomic explosions. There's the same attention to rhythmic assault on this record as on the others, but there's a quieter, more sinister, darker, lower-key ambience at work here, with Blixa Bargeld's vocals right at the center-front of the mix, as he experiments with breath, lower pitches, whispers, and barely-audible squeals. There's a barely-restrained, beautiful tension here that never gets resolved, sounding as if the band is holding itself back from complete annihilation.

DRAKE, BOB Planets & Animals CD
"A pandemic is just an opportunity for some people to spend even more time in the studio. Bob is a minor cult, and this new CD -- exquisitely recorded (in a previous life he was an L.A. studio engineer) is a compact suite of short, dense, twisty, jaw-dropping -- and highly unusual -- songs; a whirlwind for the uninitiated but still surprisingly accessible. It's his 10th release for ReR, each exploring some new aspect of songwriting, arrangement or production. This time he's added a small menagerie of newly invented instruments to augment his already extensive acoustic and electronic instrumentarium -- and the band of Bob that plays them has seldom been larger or tighter. Beautifully packaged with impressive fold-out artwork by the incomparable Joe Mruk. Biographical: From 1978-1989 Bob played a key role in Denver's underground music scene and was a founding member of both Thinking Plague and Hail. In Los Angeles, in the early 1990s, he engineered sessions with just about everybody... from Ice Cube to Shirley MacLaine, joined the 5UU's, and began to write and record his mind-stretching solo albums. He has lived in his home studio in Southern France since 1994 where he has played on, recorded, or mixed hundreds of albums. A member of the Peter Blegvad Quintet, The Science Group and Vril, he is also celebrated for his definitive re-masterings of classic albums by Art Bears, Henry Cow, ZNR, Cassiber and others."

OSEES Metamorphosed LP
"It seems that every time you turn around, there's another Oh Sees [OSEES] slab. Long ago we lost all capacity to be surprised that this sturdy unit keeps putting out records and that they're really good. You can now add the Metamorphosed 12-inch to you ever deeper sagging row of John Dwyer and Co.'s seemingly no sleep release schedule. The five tracks were taken from the sessions that formed 2019's Face Stabber album, a seventeen-track / eighty+ minute jammified four-sider. Metamorphosed would have been the perfect third LP to fit in with the other two. John and Matt Jones run the Castle Face label with full autonomy, so it would make sense that Metamorphosed, like The 12" Synth, would have been a CF release. Yet, it's on the very cool Rock Is Hell Records label, which has put out some great Dwyer related jams in the past. The OCS Live In San Francisco album was not only great musically but all the vinyl and sleeve variants made the collectors break out in a fan sweat they're probably still recovering from. Being able to do all this yourself, it's obviously cool to still work with Jochen and Rock Is Hell. Metamorphosed isn't just some barrel scrape for those who can't get enough. All of the five tracks stand up to anything on Face Stabber. The record's twenty three+ minute 'I Got A Lot' is one of the coolest songs the band has ever done." --Henry Rollins

2021 restock. "From Sacramento via outer space comes The Twinkeyz and their Alpha Jerk LP, restored to excellence after 40 years! During the sizzling hot summer of 1976, Donnie Jupiter, Tom Darling and Walter Smith decided to break out of their boredom with a band. The group was named after Pink Fairies drummer Twink, and influnced by the Fairies, Velvet Underground, Thirteenth Floor Elevators and other underground favorites. In 1977, The Twinkeyz recorded and self-released their classic first single, 'Aliens in Our Midst.' 1978 saw its followup, 'E.S.P. / Cartoon Land.' And in 1979, the album Alpha Jerk was released on the Dutch label Plurex, run by Wally Van Middendorp of the Minny Pops. Though the songs on Alpha Jerk were great, the final mix was botched and the mastering job flawed. What should have been a classic stiffed as one of rock 'n' roll's 'could have been great.' Now it is! In 1994, Anopheles Records' Karl Ikola decided to do The Twinkeyz right. Ikola got ahold of the master tapes and, with Jupiter and Greg Freeman, remixed the entire album. In 1997, he released the restored Alpha Jerk, along with abandoned single tracks, live songs and other tidbits, as a CD entitled Aliens in Our Midst. The collection and its vinyl companion Cartoon Land went out of print more than fifteen years ago. Now after four decades, S-S Records presents Alpha Jerk as it was intended, with the original cover art and the superior Ikola / Jupiter mix. This version has been mastered by John Golden and pressed in an edition of 500 copies."

MAGIC ROUNDABOUT Sneaky Feelin/Song For Gerard Langley 7"
"Like so many other disenfranchised kids in the heady days of mid-eighties United Kingdom, Magic Roundabout came armed with leather jackets, charity shop instruments, singles by The Fall and Buzzcocks, good haircuts, a healthy VU obsession and a little psychedelic inspiration. Influenced into existence at early gigs by The Jesus and Mary Chain and Shop Assistants, The Roundies wanted to change the world or at the very least make some noise, shake things up and be a part of the happening. The gang established a clubhouse in early 1986 and began rehearsing, recording and gigging. Playing a ton of legendary shows with the likes of The Pastels, The Blue Aeroplanes, Spacemen 3, Loop, My Bloody Valentine, Inspiral Carpets and picking up a bunch of fans along the way. Rumor has it that Noel Gallagher roadied their final show. There was one song released -- 'She's a Waterfall Parts 1' and '2' on Mark Webber's (Pulp) Oozing Through The Ozone Layer cassette compilation -- and that's it. There were also talks of a flexi-disc that, for whatever reason, never saw the light of day. But by the end of the 80s, the gang had all gone their separate ways and the recordings along with so many other things were thought to be lost forever... Now, these 1987 recordings recently unearthed by Ian Masters (Pale Saints) and Third Man Records and given the 'treatment' by Warren Defever are presented to you lucky ones as the debut single by Magic Roundabout. 34 years too late or perfectly steeped and presented at just the right moment in history... Tune in, turn on and make up your own mind. Enjoy the trip."

"Following a series of records with Thrill Jockey (including the sensational Seasonal Hire with Steve Gunn), the Black Twig Pickers return to the VHF mothership to continue their charming and original take on old time and Appalachian-inspired string band sounds. Together since 2001, and a continuous presence in the music's true home of Southwest Virginia, the Twigs represent the actively working evolution of the traditions -- learning songs from other locals, playing dances at the Floyd Country Store, etc -- without retroartifice or nostalgia. The ragged-but-right performances and recording (and Sally Ann Morgan's perfect cover design) sit at the ideal intersection of DIY/'underground' and local string-sound values. On Friend's Peace, the band travels a range of styles, from the lovely harmony on the trad-classic 'Moonshiner' to the racing fiddle/guitar/banjo on the 'Money Musk' medley. Mixed in with the traditional songs are several perfectly-placed original tunes, including Mike Gangloff's keening 'Cara's Waltz' and Isak Howell's solo guitar spotlight on 'Barnswallow'."

FUKUI, RYO Mellow Dream LP
2021 repress. New "regular edition" on 140 gram vinyl. We Release Jazz (WRWTFWW Records' new sister-label) present the official reissue of criminally overlooked Japanese jazz gem Mellow Dream by Hokkaido pianist wunderkind Ryo Fukui, originally released in 1977. Released in conjunction with the its legendary predecessor 1976's Scenery (WRJ 001CD/LP/LTD-LP). Firmly standing on the foundation he laid down with Scenery, Ryo Fukui continues his exploration of modal, bop, and cool jazz sounds with meticulous grace and absolute mastery. As its title suggests, Mellow Dream ventures into slightly mellower, more soulful, and sometimes more contemplative territories (the Bill Evans-reminiscent "Mellow Dream" and "My Foolish Heart") while still packing the commanding punch Fukui's work is loved for, as heard on the amazingly bombastic "Baron Potato Blues" or the gigantic McCoy Tyner/John Coltrane-influenced "Horizon" which sees each member of the trio -- Satoshi Denpo is on bass and Yoshinori Fukui is on drums -- demonstrating their virtuosity for nine exhilarating minutes. With his sophomore album, Ryo Fukui swings from melancholy to vibrant joy with ease, and reminds you that jazz is best served with a pinch of blues, and displays an immensely rare combination of pure talent, unique personal approach and focused discipline. The man undeniably deserves a spot in the pantheon of all-time great jazz pianists. After releasing the outstanding Scenery and Mellow Dream back-to-back, Ryo Fukui worked on developing his live skills, often performing at Sapporo's Slowboat Jazz Club (which he co-founded with his wife Yasuko Fukui), and even releasing two live albums. He sadly passed away in March 2016, leaving behind a legacy of works that all jazz lovers should explore. Sourced from the original masters. Mastered at half speed; 140 gram vinyl; includes sticker.

ASHIKAWA, SATOSHI Still Way (Wave Notation 2) LP
2021 repress; LP version. 350gsm sleeve with selected UV high gloss varnish. Liner notes by Midori Takada, Satoshi Ashikawa, and Gareth Quinn Redmond. WRWTFWW Records announce the reissue of Satoshi Ashikawa's Still Way (Wave Notation 2). Initially released in 1982 as part of the Wave Notation series (which includes Hiroshi Yoshimura's Music For Nine Postcards), Still Way is, without a doubt, a seminal Japanese environmental/ambient/minimalism album, often mentioned alongside Midori Takada's Through The Looking Glass (1983) (WRWTFWW 018LP, WRWTFWW 019CD/LP) and Hiroshi Yoshimura's Green (1986) as one of the genre's most important pieces. "Like the moment of stillness, after the wind passes through the garden, when the rain stops for a brief second..." Notably inspired by Erik Satie's Furniture Music and Brian Eno's ambient work, Satoshi Ashikawa aimed to compose music "intended to be listened to in a casual manner, as a musical landscape or a sound object -- not something that would stimulate listeners but music that should drift like smoke and become part of the environment." The result is simply phenomenal, subtle minimalism and emotional elegance exquisitely orchestrated by Satoshi Ishikawa and his team consisting of his wife Masami Ashikawa (on flute), Midori Takada (on vibraphone), Yuko Utsumi (on harp), Tomoko Sono (on piano), and Junko Arase (on vibraphone). In conjunction with Still Way, WRWTFWW Records is releasing Laistigh den Ghleo (WRWTFWW 039CD/LP), a companion album by Irish ambient/minimalist composer Gareth Quinn Redmond, inspired by Ashikawa's approach. Liner notes by Midori Takada, Satoshi Ashikawa, and Gareth Quinn Redmond.

SEIDEL, DAVE Involution 2CD
From the liner notes by Dean Rosenthal: XI Records announce the release of Dave Seidel's new double-CD, Involution. The work contained on this recording represents Dave Seidel's second foray into the realm of releasing a full-length recording. But this new milestone was not reached until he had long immersed himself in the experimental scene in NYC in the 1980s and 1990s, working closely with established experimental music pioneers Lois V Vierk and Guy Klucevsek among others. Seidel's own composing and performing grew, blossoming into live performances in the 2000s and 2010s, allowing further exploration into programming and experimenting with sonority and algorithmic sonification. What we hear on this recording is the care and detail of his passion for these two features of composition and a steady integration of them. This leads us to the two pieces heard here: "Involution" and "Hexany Permutations". In thinking of sonority, Seidel has spoken of the strong influence of La Monte Young's use of perfectly-tuned intervals and Young's ideal of previously unheard sounds, those that may engender new sensations and emotions in the listener. But Seidel also confirms the influence of the work of Alvin Lucier, in particular the Orpheus Variations. For Seidel and his sonorities, he has found little use for the 12-note chromatic tempered system, no doubt the ubiquity of this universal tuning of Western music having too few possibilities for his ear. The question then appears: how does he apply this desire to explore new forms of sonority outside the well-tempered system and, for our purposes, in these pieces? The first CD in this set presents Seidel's composition "Involution", heard in three sections. The music is presented as an expansion of slowly-changing sonorities that explore the harmonic spaces inherent in certain microtonal tunings and scales, or modes within those tunings. Each section employs a different tuning and a different set of scales or modes and uses a combination of all the different technologies Seidel has been working with over the past several years: Csound, modular synthesizer, and pedals. "Hexany Permutations", the music that the second CD of this release contains, hints at the same concerns of sonority heard in Involution but tackles the composing slightly differently, with musical results of differing proportions. In this piece, the structure of the piece plays an equal if not more dominant role than the microtonal sonorities explored.
