ARMAND HAMMER & THE ALCHEMIST Haram CD
"Haram is a mercurial collaboration between incendiary rap duo Armand Hammer, and living legend The Alchemist. For the first time ELUCID and billy woods have crafted an album with a single producer and the result is extraordinary. With their unmatched penchant for stirring imagery and incisive storytelling, the two rappers dive into an ocean of Alchemist's creation: warmly inviting on the surface, black and bone-crushingly cold at depth. Haram is a collection of the profane and the pure; a reminder that that which is forbidden is also sacrosanct. The artists are joined by their friends and fellow travelers on this journey. KAYANA's golden voice upps the wattage on 'Black Sunlight,' while Fielded's sultry alto gets chopped and screwed on 'Aubergine'. Earl Sweatshirt makes a sun-soaked appearance, while Curly Castro and Amani mix like ice and salt on Brooklyn sidewalks and Quelle Chris, as always, finds a pocket all his own. Still, there is a natural rapport that belies the New York-to-Los Angeles-and-back nature of the project, allowing Haram to be more than the sum of its parts, however impressive those parts may be. This isn't just the genre's most insistent contemporary voices paired with arguably its best producer. This is when you buy a beautiful house only to discover, hidden behind a heavy bookcase, a stairway twisting up and away into the darkness."

VA Rockin' With The Krauts: Real Rock 'n' Roll Made In Germany Vol. 1 CD
"Since the 1990s, Bear Family has released quite a few German-language rock 'n' roll compilations: what you get to hear here has nothing to do with them! -The hard stuff, the real stuff -- no rockers trivialized to innocent hits, but pure rock 'n' roll, twist rockers, beat rockers and hard instrumentals. 33 real rock 'n' roll masters of the years 1957-65 from Germany -- no 'Sugar Baby' attitudes, they also rocked English! This music was hardly played on the radio or at the dance school -- if at all, it was played at Dampmann's caterpillar track or bumper cars at the funfair. In addition to popular artists like Ted Herold, Paul Würges and Billy Sanders, we provide lesser-known individual performers and bands that have never appeared on rock 'n' roll compilations, including the Starfighters, the Six Tornados, the Rocking Stars, the Fred Hollerbach All-Stars and Frankie & The Rockets -- hard to find and expensive in the original! Did you know that performers you'd never expect, like Michael Holm and Bernd Spier, have recorded badass rockers? We prove it. Four titles for the first time on CD The Krauts Are Rockin' -- how could it ever come to this? German rock 'n' roll from the '50s and early '60s evokes ambivalent emotions, separated mothers from daughters, brothers from sisters and fathers from sons -- the spirit of rock 'n' roll was as important as our daily bread for the youth in post-war Germany. hail, hail rock 'n' roll -- deliver me from the days of old the prophet had once proclaimed. The music industry quickly locked the wild teens in the pop cage, the really rough escapees came to the mood cannons of the funfair front. Until today, the '50s are presented to us as a pastel-colored fairy tale land, in which there is no place for rockers, teenagers and the rebellion of a generation against mendacity, oblivion and smugness. Bear Family Records presents a compilation away from the big hits, wanderlust and grotesque trivialization of youth."

LAMBKIN, GRAHAM Solos 4LP BOX
The years between Graham Lambkin's tenure with the legendary Shadow Ring and his more recent improvisational duos mark a distinct period of creative production within the artist's insular career. Living with his family in Poughkeepsie, NY, from 2001 through 2011 Lambkin recorded and self-released four solo albums that valorized mundane domestic situations while reveling in the liminal spaces between the acts of listening, recording, and producing. Created through an ingenious economy of means, these solo records are as beguilingly seductive as they are uncanny. Perpetually laughing in his own duplicitous face, Lambkin breathed new life into musique concrète and sound poetry, giving outmoded forms a contemporary consciousness while setting the gold standard for a continuously unfolding canon of 21st century tape music. Poem (For Voice & Tape) (2001), Salmon Run (2007), Softly Softly Copy Copy (2009), and Amateur Doubles (2011) are now remastered and finally back in print, with Salmon Run and Softly Softly Copy Copy available on vinyl for the first time. This deluxe boxed set of Graham Lambkin's first four solo records includes an expansive 42-page book featuring unseen photos and reproductions of artworks as well as essays and anecdotal recollections providing fresh insight and divulging hermetic secrets by Ed Atkins, Mark Harwood, Matt Krefting, Lawrence Kumpf, Samara Lubelski, and Adrian Rew.Graham Lambkin (b. 1973, Dover, England) is a multidisciplinary artist who first came to prominence in the early '90s through the formation of his experimental music group The Shadow Ring. As a sound organizer rather than music maker, Lambkin looks at an everyday object and sees an ocean of possibility, continually transforming quotidian atmospheres and the mundane into expressive sound art using tape manipulation techniques, chance operations, and the thick ambience of domestic field recordings. His Kye imprint, founded in 2001, was an instrumental platform for the dissemination of and dialogue between work by an intergenerational cast of artists using sound, including Henning Christiansen, Anton Heyboer, Moniek Darge, and Gabi Losoncy. He began showing his visual art in 2014 with Came To Call Mine, an exhibition curated by Lawrence Kumpf and Justin Luke at Audio Visual Arts in conjunction with the publication of Lambkin's children's book (for adults) of the same name, and has since exhibited his work at 356 Mission, Künstlerhaus, PiK, and Blank Forms.

DWYER, TED BYRNES, GREG COATES, TOM DOLAS, BRAD CAULKINS, JOHN Endless Garbage CD
"Walk the dog. Exercise. Make art. 'The mind is happy when the body is.' Things I can potentially fill my days with if I am stuck at home for months on end... Then, one day, I hear a frenetic, free drummer playing in his garage a few blocks from me. And I think 'interesting'. I stand outside his garage staring at the wall, like a fool, for a minute, then decide to leave a note on the car parked there. This is how I ended up meeting and working with Ted Byrnes. He wasn't creeped out, and he ended up sending me a pile of truly spontaneous drums recordings from the carport to work with. I decided to have every musician come in one at a time and just take a wild pass at their track over the drums. None of these people had ever met or played together. I was the connecting thread. I scratched the surface initially with electric bass, saxophone, guitars, cuica, synthesizers, flute and effects, but soon realized I would need heavy hitters to make this place habitable. Greg Coates, upright bass expressionist extraordinaire, hacked through the dense weeds, vines and frayed cabling. He lays the map out and makes breathing room. Space to swing a cat. Tom Dolas (keys), my often foil, came in and began tip-toeing through the rubble and refuse. Dotting the layout with flecks of light, flights of fancy and potential tangential trajectories. Then the finisher, Brad Caulkins on horns. As always, Brad came in like grace itself, scanned the floor for food, and huffed and puffed and blew the house down. He takes a bruiser situation and lends it some warmth and hospitality, old school. "After I spent a bit of time mixing and editing this down to a palatable offering I couldn't help but think about human consumption. ...Endless Garbage seemed a fitting title. A cacophonous and glorious sketch of ourselves. For fans of Albert Ayler, ECM records, Gong, improvisation, sustainability and consumption." --John Dwyer

VAN ZANDT, TOWNES Somebody Had To Write It LP
2021 restock. "An essential time capsule of Townes Van Zandt acoustic performances. A re-imagined collection available on vinyl for the first time in the USA. Includes classic Townes Van Zandt songs, 'If I Needed You', 'Pancho & Lefty', 'Waiting Round To Die', and 'I'll Be Here in The Morning', (duet with Barb Donovan). Include digital download containing bonus interview tracks with KUT's Larry Monroe. From the liner notes by Harold Eggers Jr.: 'These recordings are as close to the bone of Townes as you can get. They give the listener a very unique and detailed insight into and overview of his songwriting, music, and life as no other. Townes often made light of the dark, living in the shadows more than not. This album and Townes spoken words (bonus tracks) are significant because Townes personally chose each track, and in his own words revealed the private person and singer/songwriter/artist he was. These recordings and spoken words were very important to Townes for the world to hear his music and life story as he lived it, as told from the man himself.'"

ARBY, KHAIRA Live In New York 2010 CD
Clermont Music announces the release of Live In New York 2010 from Khaira Arby. Recorded in August 2010 at Bard College in New York, Khaira electrified the audience giving one of her greatest performances. Her energy and spirit captured in this recently discovered album illustrate Khaira at the height of her powers. Sadly, she passed away in the summer of 2018 leaving this album as one of her only full concert recordings. Khaira Arby grew up in the Abaradjou neighborhood of Timbuktu. By age 11 she was sought-after by regional orchestras. A cousin to the great Ali Farka Toure, Khaira was influenced by the changes in music and culture of the times. She blended modern instruments and song composition with traditional melodies and rhythms. In the 1980s Khaira began to focus all her energy on music. She began to be recognized outside of Mali and by 2001 she gained worldwide recognition from her performances at the Festival au Desert. Khaira Arby lived in Timbuktu until 2012 when Northern Mali was occupied by Islamic fundamentalists. The Islamists banned secular music and Khaira fled to Bamako where she lived with her family and bandmembers. When in 2013 French forces arrived, Khaira decided to remain in Bamako fearing for her safety in her beloved Timbuktu. Khaira was named a Chevalier de l'Ordre National du Mali. In 2011 her peers awarded her the Tamani d'Or in recognition of her status as one of the great Malian voices. She appeared annually at the legendary Festival au Desert. She performed in Europe in 2005. From 2010 through 2013, Khaira and her band toured extensively in Europe, the United States, Canada, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates performing to rave reviews. Live In New York 2010 was recorded at Khaira's first performance in North America. In complete control, she received standing ovations throughout the evening. Accompanied by backup singers and her hot rock band she showed people how cultures are blended while still preserving her Malian roots. One of the first women in Mali to emerge onto the national stage as a solo artist, Khaira Arby's debut album, Moulaye, was released in 1990.

RLW Agnostic Diaries CD
The common factor linking these recordings are projects that were never fully realized. The basic recordings started in 2005, however the period of reworking and transformation (2016 to 2017) is more important. All vocal parts and general revisions were done during this period. Agnosticism was the basic idea for the vocal/musical re-working of the pieces with the vocals implanted into the basic pieces, not just as simple overdubs, but inserted in a dialectical confrontation with the basic sounds and structures. "Le Ballet" relies on George Antheil's Ballet Mecanique; "For Gerald" on a co-operation with Anla Courtis using some sounds by Ovary Lodge planned for the Gerald Jupitter-Larssen series which stopped far too early. "Without M.B." includes RLW's parts for a collaboration with Marc Baron whilst "Monotype #6" includes vocals by Dylan Nyoukis, also used for a collaborative CD-r with him. Ralf Wehowsky is one of the most respected electronic composers of our day and was also a founder member of the seminal German group P16.D4 and label Selektion whose ground-breaking releases influenced many working in today's experimental music scene. Previous releases have seen him collaborate with such well known and diverse artists such as Merzbow, Bernhard Guenter, Jim O'Rourke, Achim Wollscheid, and Lionel Marchetti. His music is impossible to pigeonhole into one simple bracket. It is neither industrial or musique concrete, nor computer music nor improvisation. In fact, it could be all of these.

ROLIN, MATTHEW J. The Dreaming Bridge 2LP
"... The Ohio-based guitarist's artistic leaps in recent years are rivaled only by those of Daniel Bachman, another once-precocious player formerly in the John Fahey / Jack Rose mold who has over the years transcended the idiom to create his own singular, deeply personal music. Rolin's latest LP, the double album The Dreaming Bridge, makes similar strides. For many practitioners of this style, the first and perhaps most challenging feat is to escape the gargantuan shadow of Fahey. Some do this by adding other instruments or field recordings to their DADGAD ruminations; some opt to play electric. Of course, Fahey did all of those things, too. Better still to have not been directly influenced by Fahey in the first place: Rolin's initial embrace of the acoustic guitar was inspired not by Fahey himself, but rather by Fahey-influenced guitarists like polymath Jim O'Rourke and trickster prodigy Ryley Walker. This vicarious influence is exemplified by Rolin's distinctive, at times irreverent approach to guitar soli. While the influence of Walker's nimble 12-string probing is evident on tunes like Rolin's impressionistic '10:30 AM,' and while the guitarist's patiently unfolding, contemplative 'Weeping Willow' indeed recalls O'Rourke's masterpiece Happy Days, Rolin remains very much his own man, with his own idiosyncratic approach. This is clear from the first notes of The Dreaming Bridge's opening track 'Pinhole,' which introduces Rolin's affinity for shimmering, almost choral, reverb, the effect doubling as a compositional element. Similarly, on the overtone-rich 'Drown,' Rolin's virtuosic playing is practically a duet with its own echo, an effect deployed not to obscure, but to buoy. This deep attention to atmosphere serves a crucial function on The Dreaming Bridge, which sparkles throughout with a strident, Zen-like focus Then there are the tunes themselves. Terrific tunes! Like William Tyler -- another possible influence -- Rolin, despite largely working from the necessarily limited palette of instrumental solo guitar music, thinks like a songwriter. This more traditional approach can be heard on tracks like 'Moonlight' and 'Backyard Blues' which follow a compositional logic complete with verses and choruses. Rolin performs these compositions beautifully; as a player he is dexterous and dynamic, with a light and agile touch reminiscent of early Will Ackerman or Alex De Grassi. Album highlight 'Hallucinations' features saxophonist Patrick Shiroishi's keening, double tracked reed work, which at times simulates the sound of two violins playing cat and mouse between the stereo channels..." --James Toth Also features Entourage, Shadowfax, and Jen Powers.

GLASS, PHILIP Itaipu: The Canyon CD
"Itaipu is a place between Brazil and Paraguay and hosts a large hydro-electric dam. This album is a work of massive proportions much like the creation of the Itaipu dam. On this work Glass makes good use of a heavy brass section combined with a large chorus and is around 40 minutes in length, spread over four movements. The extensive choral work is written in the language of the Giuranni Indians. Glass often chooses obscure languages for the effect of distance. This is a powerful pair of compositions and it is a good coupling on this recording. On the opener 'Itaipu' and the closing track 'The Canyon' the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and chorus with Robert Shaw do a truly grand job of performance. It's a superb Glass work and a real classic of the '90s."

BROUGHTON BAND, EDGAR Edgar Broughton Band CD
"The Edgar Broughton Band, founded in 1968 in Warwick, England, was one of those unique late 60's/early 70's bands having their own fanbase and a psychedelic blues-rock sound with occult tendencies. Their self-titled 1971 third album is an eclectic album that changes pace from song to song and is also known as The Meat Album containing guest appearances by Roy Harper and Mike Oldfield. They were the people's band, working man's rock and roll, who let their politics show clearly in their lyrics. Their heavily blues-rock influenced sound was hard-driven and propelled by Edgar Broughton's gritty vocal style, similar to those of Captain Beefheart and Howlin' Wolf."

METERS, THE Fire On The Bayou CD
"This is The Meters first album with Cyril Neville as a member. On Fire On The Bayou you'll not only find echoes of their early R&B funkiness, but also some very New Orleans songs like 'Talkin' 'Bout New Orleans', 'They All Ask'd For You', and 'Mardi Gras Mambo'. The band also gets down and funky 'Rejuvenation'-style with tracks like 'Fire On The Bayou', 'Love Slip Upon Ya', 'Can You Do Without?' and 'Liar,' which are best placed in-between on the folksy R&B 'Out in the Country' (love that chord progression) and the jazzy guitar workout 'Middle of the Road'. This album exudes the New Orleans spirit--musically as well as lyrically, extolling the virtues of great food, bayou living, and Mardi Gras."

BUCKLEY, TIM Starsailor CD
"Starsailor is the sixth studio album by Tim Buckley (yes, the father of Jeff Buckley) and arguably his artistic pinnacle. This is the culmination of Tim's journey into the stylings of jazz. A breathtaking album of incredible originality and creativity. Buck Gardner, from Frank Zappa's classic Mothers Of Invention plays amazing trumpet parts on this album. All the tracks are unique in their own way and deserve praise. Songs like the title track and 'Jungle Fire' among others show his vocal versatility like never before with his legendary 5 plus octave range. 'Song To The Siren' has been covered by a variety of artists, most notably by This Mortal Coil and John Frusciante. Although hardly appreciated in 1970, this is one of the truly great modern recordings."

"The definitive reissue of one of rock's rarest and most sought-after albums -- 'acid-folk' -- equal parts pastoral folk and contemplative psychedelic. The fi¬rst time since 1971 that this album has been run from the original master tapes, recently discovered in Italy. Mark Fry was 19 -- recently graduated from high school and in Italy studying painting -- when he walked barefooted into RCA's Italian subsidiary, played some songs he'd written on his guitar and was signed to record the album that would become legend. The first recordings he made proved stuff, so he was paired with members of the Scottish band Middle of the Road, who were in Rome while under contract to RCA Italiana. Convening in a basement home studio with two 4-track reel-to-reel recorders, Mark's visions coalesced in a dreamy, airy manner -- 'Nick Drake meets Dr. Strangely Strange with a touch of Lewis Carroll' The Word Magazine would later write. Pressed in small amounts for Vincenzo Micocci's RCA sub-label It, Alice remained an out of reach masterpiece for many but its creator, who returned to England in 1971 and subsequently traveled the world, playing music, sometimes recording and painting. By the time of its rediscovery, its master tapes were assumed lost. The pristine source material reveals nuances not heard on anything but original It pressings and pairs Alice with previously-unreleased recordings from the mid-70s."

VA Sound Storing Machines: The First 78rpm Records from Japan, 1903-1912 CD
The first commercial recordings from Asia were made in Japan in 1903 by Fred Gaisberg, the legendary producer and recording engineer who traveled the world making recordings for the Gramophone Company (later His Masters Voice). The recording industry barely existed at this time. Man's ability to record and reproduce sound had only existed since 1877 (with the invention of Edison's cylinder phonograph) and flat disc records, what we all collect and obsess over today, had only come into being in the late 1890s. It is a miracle what these fragile discs have survived: wars with Russia and China, the fire bombings (and worse) of World War II, modernization, the onslaught of Western media. They document, through a dreamlike haze of surface noise, a Japan that had just barely begun to open its doors to the rest of the world. Including gagaku, shakuhachi, shamisen, storytelling, folksong and more. these recordings are a unique glimpse into an ancient culture and an important document of the beginnings of the recording industry. Simple and complex. Alien and familiar. Featuring important artists and those who only appeared to sing before the strange Western recording horn and then vanished. Sound Storing Machines spans only nine years of recording -- from 1903 and the first commercial recordings made by Fred Gaisberg to 1912, the beginning of Japan's homegrown record industry, including a few sides taken from Japan's notorious bootleg 78rpm industry. Collected on various trips to Japan and compiled by sound artist Robert Millis (Indian Talking Machine, Victrola Favorites, Climax Golden Twins, Phi Ta Khon: Ghosts of Isan, This World is Unreal Like a Snake in a Rope, etc.) This is part three in a series (all produced by Millis) of early recording from Asia -- including Sublime Frequencies' The Crying Princess: 78rpm Records from Burma and Scattered Melodies: Korean Kayagum Sanjo. Limited edition CD with booklet/liner notes by Robert Millis.Features Suenaga Togi and gagaku musicians from the Imperial Household Orchestra, Toyosawa Heikichi, Azumaya Kamanosuke, Sumako of Shinbashi, unknown artists, Uehara Sakima, Takahashi Kiyokusa, Fukushira Kado, Yanagiya Kosan, Mimasuya Kachiguri, Umewaka Manzaburo, Umewaka Rokurou of the Kanze Noh school, Nokiken Hanadou, Shimeju of Yoshiwara, Takemoto Sumitayu, Toyozawa Danpei, Toyozawa Sennosuke, Takemoto Haruko Tayu, Toyozawa Shinzaemon, Inoue Satokishi.

VA Sound Storing Machines: The First 78rpm Records from Japan, 1903-1912 LP
Collected on various trips to Japan and compiled by sound artist Robert Millis (Indian Talking Machine, Victrola Favorites, Climax Golden Twins, Phi Ta Khon: Ghosts of Isan, This World is Unreal Like a Snake in a Rope, etc.) This is part three in a series (all produced by Millis) of early recording from Asia -- including Sublime Frequencies' The Crying Princess: 78rpm Records from Burma and Scattered Melodies: Korean Kayagum Sanjo.Features Suenaga Togi and gagaku musicians from the Imperial Household Orchestra, Toyosawa Heikichi, Azumaya Kamanosuke, Sumako of Shinbashi, unknown artists, Uehara Sakima, Takahashi Kiyokusa, Fukushira Kado, Yanagiya Kosan, Mimasuya Kachiguri, Umewaka Manzaburo, Umewaka Rokurou of the Kanze Noh school, Nokiken Hanadou, Shimeju of Yoshiwara, Takemoto Sumitayu, Toyozawa Danpei, Toyozawa Sennosuke, Takemoto Haruko Tayu, Toyozawa Shinzaemon, Inoue Satokishi.

JULY The Second of July LP
2021 restock. Trading Places present a reissue of July's The Second of July, demos for their debut album recorded in 1968. The obscure west London psychedelic rock act, July, arose from the ashes of rhythm and blues group The Tomcats, who had some success in Spain in the mid-60s after absorbing members of fellow musical travelers, Second Thoughts. Back in London in 1968, co-founder Tom Newman, later known for his engineering and production work on Tubular Bells, shifted the group into psychedelic mode with his guitar friend, Pete Cook, writing material that would draw the guitarist/bandleader Spencer Davis in a management role, leading to a contract with Major Minor records for their self-titled debut LP, which failed to chart, but the inclusion of songs such as "My Clown", "Dandelion Seeds", and "The Way" on various compilations have assured a strong underground following. The rare demos that make up The Second of July date from before the debut album was recorded and reveal the group in all their evolving experimental glory, the sound not only blending psychedelic rock and pop with lush harmonies, intricate lead guitar, and scintillating keyboards, but also including Indian elements such as sitar and tabla (and Indian-derived chord sequences), plus trippy tape loops and phasing. BLAKE, TIM Crystal Machine LP
2021 restock. Trading Places present a reissue of Tim Blake's Crystal Machine, originally released in 1977. British synthesizer wizard Tim Blake became a mainstay of the adventurous musical Gong collective in the mid-1970s and joined legendary rockers Hawkwind by the end of the decade. In between, he recorded a number of experimental solo albums, of which the first, Crystal Machine, was the most innovative and ambitious. An album taken from epic live performances staged at the Seasalter festival in 1976 and at Paris's Palace Theatre in 1977, the disc had four extended synthesizer suites and a locked fragment at the end, all featuring Blake on various futuristic keyboards, including an EMS Synthis A, a Minimoog, and an Elka Rhapsody, as well as an EMS Frequency Shifter, an MXR Flanger, and a Sony TC Tape Deck Echo, performing in tandem with a Spectra Physics 164 Argon Laser, and a Crystal Machine Projector, operated by Patrice Warrener for maximum trippy-ness. The result is an innovative masterpiece of ambient electronica with a touch of jazz-funk, as heard most noticeably on "Metro Logice" and "Last Ride Of The Boogie Child." This is a deep dive into all that is possible in the realm of the synthesizer, repeated listening revealing the hefty skill woven in layers of dexterous playing. Licensed by Cherry Red.
