MAGIC CASTLES Sun Reign CD
Minneapolis psych-rockers Magic Castles are back with a new album, Sun Reign, making an exciting return after founder and songwriter Jason Edmonds suffered a near fatal car accident in November 2019. Magic Castles are well-versed in the ways of psychedelically-inclined folk-rock. Edmonds's smooth vocal harmonies float above the guitars, creating a lush, almost Byrds-esque soundscape. The layered arrangements incorporate Farfisa organ, synths, and dreamy string arrangements. Sun Reign is the band's fourth release on Anton Newcombe's label A Recordings Ltd. Ironically similar to Brian Jonestown Massacre, the Magic Castles have been plagued by lineup changes over the years. Due to this and other factors, in 2016, Edmonds, a single father, decided to take a short hiatus from regular live shows and touring to focus on his family. During that time, (2016-2019) Edmonds, an introverted multi-instrumentalist, continued to record new material in his studio, and also record with a new band at Neil Weir's studio Blue Bell Knoll, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The results of these sessions are the current release, Sun Reign. In November of 2019, tragedy struck and Edmonds was seriously injured in a car accident that required hospitalization and surgery. Friends started a GoFundMe that raised over $20k USD for the uninsured musician's hospital bills, showing an incredible outpouring of love and support for him and his family. Fortunately, Edmonds has made a complete recovery from his injuries and has bounced back remarkably well. In early 2020, Edmonds managed to finish the remaining work on the album Sun Reign, including a previously unreleased song, "Surmise", penned by guitarist Jermiah Doering, and a rare cover of a moody 1966 garage rock song "Ode to the Wind" by Danny and the Counts. Edmonds also began working with a booking agency, planning a return tour to Europe with the band to support the new album. Unfortunately, it was not to be. Due to the global pandemic crisis of Covid-19, the album was delayed until 2021, and the promising tour was cancelled. In May of 2020, Minneapolis police killed George Floyd two blocks from Edmonds's home, which incited riots across the country. The protests led to the burning of Minneapolis, where a long-time music venue and many other buildings were lost. Edmonds' studio was not destroyed although many nearby buildings were. Edmonds is a known supporter of Black Lives Matter.

MONOLAKE Gobi. The Vinyl Edit 2021 LP
Originally released on CD in 1999, Astral Industries present the first vinyl issue of Monolake's much-loved Gobi, licensed from Imbalance Computer Music. Set to the backdrop of the Gobi Desert in eastern Asia, two shimmering vistas plunge the listener into a vast and deeply hypnotic nocturnal soundscape. The perennial hiss and rattle of insects float along the fresh night air in soft waves. The desert thrives with quiet activity as a westerly wind skitters across moonlit dunes, granulated folds dancing like sheets of thin silk. Tectonic plates murmur beneath the shower of stars overhead, their millennial cycles whispering of aeons past. Vividly textured and enticingly synthetic in its sound design, Gobi succeeds as a stunning piece of minimalism.

SCHNAUSS & JONAS MUNK, ULRICH Eight Fragments Of An Illusion CD
London-based producer Ulrich Schnauss and Danish guitarist and producer Jonas Munk have both unfolded their unique visions of electronic music over the past two decades, and they have been collaborating since the mid-2000s. Eight Fragments Of An Illusion is their first album in over four years, their third overall. The latest effort is ambient and introspective in nature, but with a kinetic, polyrhythmic energy pushing it forward. There's a floating quality to Ulrich's synthesizer washes and Munk's guitar patterns, yet the eight tracks are anchored by pulse and compositional direction. The duo brings their individual strengths to the table, yet the music transcends any of their previous work conceptually. There are echoes of blissed-out new age music and kosmische from the 1970s and 1980s, as well as traces of shoegaze-era abstraction and leftfield electronica. But ultimately there's no off-the-rack category that fits it. It exists in its own rarefied space. Pieced together from sessions spanning the course of three years, mostly in Ulrich's London studio -- a workspace packed with rare synthesizers and vintage outboard gear -- Eight Fragments Of An Illusion is a luxurious listen. Compared to the duos previous two releases there's more of a focus on texture and slowly evolving patterns, which naturally reflects the fact that Ulrich has spent a large portion of the last seven years as a full-time member of legendary synth group Tangerine Dream. Sonically, the tracks have a certain silky and shimmering characteristic, with Ulrich's mallet-like arpeggios and glittering analog synthesizer pads merging with Munk's melodic guitar lines as the most natural thing in the world. Throughout, the guitar is used both in a rather traditional manner, but often also as a vehicle for sonic exploration, processed into cloudy layers using outboard effects and software. This might be their most minimalist outing to date, but it still radiates that uplifting widescreen magic that both artists are known for. Eight Fragments Of An Illusion is their most focused collaborative musical statement to date, and arguably the most rewarding.

VA More Light 5x12" BOX
In a year which made impossible the now highly anticipated annual unveiling of new projects and collaborations that usually accompanies Berlin Atonal, the festival has compiled a major selection of new works by a range of artists from across the advanced musical landscape. Entitled More Light, the compilation traverses the vast spectrum of musical experience. French producer Aho Ssan -- who made his debut at Berlin Atonal's 2019 edition -- has smelted the vocals of Exzald S into a multi-layered track that gestures towards a future language for computer-produced music. New York's Hiro Kone pairs with group A's Tot Onyx to debut their collaboration with an outstanding showpiece of groaning power-surge electronics, while legendary futurist Gerald Donald's XOR Gate alias. Speculative widescreen-electronics protagonists Roly Porter and Paul Jebanasam unveil the first recorded track of their collaborative Altar project, conjuring up an entire ecology composed of both positively and negatively charged emotional-electronic particles. Enchanted Belgian magicians Pablo's Eye offer a new track that grows out of the melancholic ambient-pop that the collective has been making since the '90s, while Nkisi hones in on a section of her premiere Atonal '19 set "Initiation" and reworks it into a brawling, bleak, hard-edged trampler. These tracks sit beside a transformational collab between Abdullah Miniawy and Carl Gari, evocative synthesized works from Caterina Barbieri and Laurel Halo, unclassifiable post-ambient from exael, and Kazakh-British violinist Galya Bisengalieva, and more. The festival's legendary revived imprint which has previously hosted contributions from Cabaret Voltaire, Psychic TV, Marshstepper, and others now has a monumental new chapter. Also features Tunes Of Negation, Lafawndah, Galya Bisengalieva, Alessandro Adriani, Vladislav Delay, Lee Gamble, LABOUR, Peder Mannerfelt, and dBridge.

I MARC 4 The Psych Jazzy Beat Of I Marc 4 CD
Warehouse find, original stock from 2000. Italian soundtracks from the late '60s to mid-70s are practically a genre to themselves and have long been a treasure trove for those who seek unique jazzy psychedelic beats. In the early '90s, both the retro-exotica crowd and the rare groove DJs re-discovered Italian soundtrack music thus giving it a big boost in popularity. The Black Cat label responded to this renewed interest with its Loungissima series that re-packaged a variety of Italian soundtracks in attractive vinyl LP collections. The Psych Jazzy Beat of I Marc 4, features the music of one of the top recording quartets of Italian soundtracks, I Marc 4. The members of this quartet all came from a jazz background and originally grouped together in the mid-60s with the purpose of supporting various high-profile vocalists. In the late '60s they moved on to being soundtrack composers whose instrumental works would then be collected and released on LPs. Psychedelic rock, soul jazz, brassy Herb Alpert style numbers, spacey exotic lounge music, goofy country funk, proto-progressive rock are the easily recognizable genres coexisting in this retrospective of one of the most hidden treasures of the Italian psych-jazz scene. 24 tracks smasher, compiled by DJ and TV producer Alessandro Casella for his label Black Cat for the Loungissima series, this is a retrospective on the I Marc 4 rangin' from 1970 to 1976, and also containing an interactive rom-track with the interview to Maurizio Majorana from the magazine Il Giaguaro. Original copies originally out in year 2000 and hard to find ever since.

CHERRY, DON Om Shanti Om CD
2021 repress. An amazing document of the life experiment that was the Organic Music Society. This super quality audio, recorded by RAI (the Italian public broadcasting company) in 1976 for television, documents a quartet concert focused on vocals compositions and improvisations. Here, Don Cherry and his family-community's musical belief emerges in its simplicity, with the desire to merge the knowledge and stimuli gained during numerous travels across the World in a single sound experience. Don's pocket-trumpet is melted with the beats of the great Brazilian percussionist Nana Vasconcelos, the Italian guitar of Gian Piero Pramaggiore, and the tanpura drone of Moki. A pure hippie aesthetic, like in an intimate ceremony, filters a magical encounter between Eastern and Western civilizations, offering different suggestions of sound mysticism: natural acoustics in which individual instruments and voices are part of a wider pan-tribal consciousness. A desert Western landscape marries Asian and Latin atmospheres. Indigenous contributions with berimbau explorations find fossil sounds of rattles and clap-hands invocations. Influences of Indian mantra singing are combined with eternal African voices or with folkish-Latin guitar rhythms, while flute and drums evoke distant dances. In the Organic Music everything becomes an act of devotion and love, an ecstatic dwell in the dimension of a sacred free-rejoice.

HENNIX/CHORA(S)SAN TIME-COURT MIRAGE, CATHERINE CHRISTER Blues Alif Lam Mim LP
Having already unearthed three collections of archival 1970s recordings by Catherine Christer Hennix, Blank Forms continues their annual illumination of the visionary Swedish composer's music by turning to more recent work with this first-time vinyl edition of Hennix's Blues Alif Lam Mim in the Mode of Rag Infinity/Rag Cosmosis, a 2014 piece first released as a CD in 2016. The double album captures the April 22, 2014 premiere of the composition by the Chora(s)san Time-Court Mirage, Hennix's expanded just intonation ensemble, featuring a brass section of Amir ElSaffar, Paul Schwingenschlögl, Hilary Jeffery, Elena Kakaliagou, and Robin Hayward; live electronics by Stefan Tiedje and Marcus Pal; and voice by Amirtha Kidambi, Imam Ahmet Muhsin Tüzer, and Hennix herself. Intended to reveal the origins of the blues in the Eastern musical traditions of raga and makam, Blues Alif Lam Mim in the Mode of Rag Infinity/Rag Cosmosis has its roots in Hennix's 2013 realization of an Illuminatory Sound Environment, a concept developed in 1978 by anti-artist Henry Flynt on the basis of Hennix's own The Electric Harpsichord. As Hennix explains in Other Matters, Blank Forms' 2019 collection of her writings: "Rag Infinity/Rag Cosmosis presents fragments of 'raga-like' frequency constellations following distinct cycles and permuting their order, creating a simultaneity of 'multi-universes.' When two such 'universes' come in proximity of each other and begin unfolding simultaneously along distinct cycles, there is a kaleidoscopic exfoliation of frequencies as one universe is becoming two, but not separated -- the effect of cosmosis is entrained, binding two or more frequency universes into proximity where their modal properties interact and blend, creating in the process entirely new microtonal constellations in an omnidirectional simultaneous cosmic order with phenomenologically 'transfinite' Poincaré cycles (cyclic returns to initial conditions). As with Hennix's best work, the organic unfolding of this quivering drone belies a precision that opens onto the infinitesimal. Over this mesmerizing ebb and flow, vocalists incant an Arabic-language devotional poem written by Hennix that features quotations in praise of Allah from the Quran. Also reproduced on the album's gatefold jacket is Hennix's elegant reduction of the sacred text, represented as the first letter of its first line gradually paired down to a single dot, which invites the contemplator to bring their inner knowledge to the composition for use as a meditation prompt. Listeners without spiritual inclinations, but who are willing to immerse themselves in the music, will find the work's serene intensity to be its own reward."

MODESELEKTOR Hello Mom! 2LP
2005 release, repressed on vinyl. Double LP version. Modeselektor are Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary, two bon vivants from Berlin who have been making humor-dipped, musically-exciting and dance-stimulating night-time entertainment for nearly ten years. Among numerous remixes, they have released not less than four EPs at BPitch Control -- this is their first full-length release. Taking the lead in a post-techno parade along a gorgeous boulevard of heavy basses, Hello Mom! works like a sampler for acute/def/contemporary/wicked electronic music blatancy. Modeselektor's adaptation of urban catchwords like electro-IDM, booty house, Euro-crunk, continental grime, ghetto-bass, dub-step and such even get the most bored know-it-all off the barstools. Here's a taste: the record starts with a collaboration with TTC from France, in the manic shredder "Dancing Box," then turns to rap and rave-monsters such as "Rap Anthem," "Kill Bill Vol. 4" and the P. Diddy campaign-named "Vote or Die." "Earth (UPS Edit)" is made of arcane stumbling sounds that wobble just like the planet, followed by Paul St. Hillaire arguing about "Fake Emotions" along with slack bubbling melodies. The Sri Lankan Sasha Perera, singer of the Berlin-Tel Aviv trio Jahcoozi, is featured on "Silikon," a track packed with urban grime. The merrily euphoric finale "I Love You" goes out to all the Moms.

OUTSIDERS, THE Count For Something: Albums, Demos, Live And Unreleased 1976-1978 5CD
"Formed whilst still at school in late 1974, The Outsiders charted their own unlikely path through the tumultuous punk era, releasing one of the very first independent 'punk' albums in the process and dividing opinion with their contribution to the new musical revolution. Aided and backed by front man Adrian Borland's father, the band produced material in an adventurous range of styles (somehow becoming 'post-punk' during the original wave), recorded in their own private studio and released material on their own Raw Edge label. Borland and co-founder Adrian Janes, whilst tapping into punk's energy, explored songwriting which dug deeper than much of whatever else was happening at the time, simultaneously youthful, reflective and knowing. Produced in association with founder and co-writer Adrian Janes, Count For Something charts a recording career lasting less than two years and which segued into Adrian Borland's next project, The Sound. Janes' remembrances, song-by-song recollections and in-depth recording information make for a unique insider's view of The Outsiders' experience, accompanied by a plethora of recently unearthed songs, demos and live material. Long overdue reappraisal and acknowledgement, The Outsiders approached the punk boom with gusto. Adventurous, unrestrained and somewhat eccentric, this was a young band feeding off of the atmosphere around them and transforming it into their own suburban take on that place and time. A must for punk and alternative rock collectors, fans of Adrian Borland and those with an interest in home-recording and the independent spirit."

LOFT, THE Ghost Trains & Country Lanes: Studio, Stage And Sessions 1984-2005 2CD
"Among the first crop of Creation Records bands in the mid-1980s, The Loft seemed the most likely to break through. Following the success of The Smiths, guitar-based independent pop was in vogue, Alan McGee's Creation label was turning heads -- its bands blending 60s psychedelia, the melodic end of punk and a new sound which would soon be immortalized on NME's C86 cassette. And in this London quartet, Creation had their answer to bands like Television, The Only Ones or early Modern Lovers, offering taut, off-kilter songs with an irresistibly deadpan cool. Sadly, after just two singles, 1984's downbeat debut Why Does The Rain and the punchier sequel, Up The Hill And Down The Slope -- an indie hit which the band performed live on TV show The Oxford Road Show, The Loft dissolved, with various members founding new bands The Weather Prophets, The Caretaker Race and The Wishing Stones. They left behind seven studio tracks, a BBC Radio 1 session for Janice Long and one track from a Creation LP documenting the scene's roots in small club The Living Room. However, The Loft's legend endured, eventually prompting a reunion in the early 2000s with all four original members -- singer/songwriter/guitarist Pete Astor, guitarist Andy Strickland, bassist Bill Price and drummer Dave Morgan. Alongside various well-received live shows, that led to a new single, 'Model Village' (2006) and more recently a session for Gideon Coe on BBC 6 Music (2015). The Loft's reputation as founding fathers of a new breed of mid-80s indie pop continues to grow to this day, with the band often cited as an influence. Compiled and coordinated by the band, Ghost Trains & Country Lanes expands on previous retrospectives of The Loft, adding those reunion recordings (including three previously unissued tracks), the Gideon Coe session and several live recordings from that historic performance at The Living Room back in 1984. (including many exclusive songs which were never recorded in the studio)."

However, in lockdown it just came to my mind as something to follow through on. As is quite normal for me, I booked the studio time then under that pressure wrote two or three songs the night before, (on a few occasions, at eight in the morning before I left home. As usual there where no rehearsals, but under the lockdown conditions over half of the tracks are just me and Jim Riley (engineer) doing everything -- drums, guitar, bass, organ -- because no one else would brave the plague and come into the studio. Those tracks sit hidden within the actual group recordings and sound the same as if recorded by the group. When mixing we see it all visually - the room in the mind's eye - where all the players sit; the drummer to the right; the vocalist is stood up front; the wood paneling on the walls of a top end US studio in the '60s / '70s. Jim was in the local R'n'B group in '77, and I was in the local punk group. We came to be friends then and are both obsessed with the 'sound' in music. This is how music is to me: a picture in sound. It has to have an origin, an emptiness and a vulnerability. I don't look for guitars to be impressive, I'm sick of impressive ego driven music -- I want authentic heart music. KINK GONG Zomia Vol. 1 LP
Kink Gong is back with his unique take and re-interpretation of the music he's been recording and documenting for years in the South East Asian highlands. Zomia Vol. 1 takes the conceptual idea of Zomia, proposed by James C. Scott in The Art of Not Being Governed: An Anarchist History of Upland South East Asia (2009), to construct its very own mythological soundscape inspired by a semi-utopic region where state rules don't apply. Zomia might be (almost) gone but Kink Gong is keen keep its spirit alive by releasing a series of albums celebrating the region's quasi mythological features."Zomia is an idea, a concept that, not so long ago, there were two very distinct worlds in southeast Asia, the valley VS highland/hinterland, the civilization VS the primitive, paddy rice VS slash and burn agriculture, Buddhism VS Animism, fixed territory VS movement/migration, written system VS oral culture, the state VS anarchy, property VS squat, controlled population VS autonomy, bricks VS bamboo and wood and, at my level museumified traditional mainstream music VS real emotions/songs of devastated lives and/or gongs ceremonies with buffalo sacrifices, extreme heat in the valleys VS shade in the jungle. I could go on and on but let's not forget that Zomia is disappearing fast, if not altogether already. How many of the people I've recorded are still alive? As you might know, before composing new music from my own Zomian experience (from 2001 to 2014 in Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, and China) I had to find those musicians, be able to communicate with them, record them as good as I could with very limited finances and gradually release a collection of 160 CDrs. It is very important for me to make sure you to listen to the fantastic original recordings before or after you've listened to this experimental reconstruction I called Zomia. Expect more volumes to come, this is my biggest source of inspiration, and the reason why I've been involved for years in constructing a mythological experimental musical Zomian soundscape." --Laurent Jeanneau, Berlin 2020

LONDON, JIMMY Bridge Over Troubled Waters 2CD
"Having made his mark alongside Billy Dyce in the popular vocal duo, the Inspirations, Trevor Shaw aka Jimmy London embarked on what proved to be immensely successful solo career, commencing with a succession of Jamaican hits for leading Kingston-based enterprise, Randy's Records. Such was the singer's success that in 1972, Randy's Records gathered a dozen of the singer's recordings for what was his -- and the company's -- very first long-playing record, Bridge Over Troubled Waters. Concurrently issued in the UK by Trojan Records, the album firmly established London as a major recording star, with highlights including popular reggae interpretations of the title track, along with 'A Little Love', 'Shake A Hand', 'It's Now Or Never' and 'Walk With Love'. By this time, Trojan had launched its own Randy's subsidiary label to showcase the cream of its Jamaican counterpart's output, and it is the majority of tracks that saw issue on the UK imprint between 1971 and 1973, along with remaining highlights from this period (including those featured on the unissued Trojan album, 'A Little Love') that comprise the remainder of this essential double-disc collection of classic early reggae sides."

"At the close of the Sixties, having been a significant presence on the Jamaican music since 1958, Randy's Records owners, Vincent and Pat Chin, decided to expand their business by building a recording studio above the famed Randy's Record Mart shop at 17 North Parade, Kingston. Over the months that immediately ensued, numerous recordings were produced at the new facility, primarily under the auspices of Gaylads founder, Harris B.B Seaton. The best of these early reggae recordings are gathered on this celebration of rare boss sounds, which includes 17 tracks making their CD debut!"

HARRIOTT & THE CRYSTALITES, DERRICK The Undertaker 2CD
"After being released in the UK by Trojan Records in 1970, The Undertaker became an instant best seller among the country's growing number of reggae fans. The collection, comprising a dozen topically-themed instrumentals, showcased the musical skills of crack Kingston session crew, the Dynamites (recording under the assumed name of the The Crystalites) and the production talents of one of Jamaica's most accomplished music makers: performer-turned-record producer, Derrick Harriott. Now, over 50 years since its release, this classic album is finally made available once more, with its 12 tracks bolstered by a further 14 instrumental sides from the period, along with the cream of Derrick Harriott's vocal productions from 1969 and 1970. Most of the recordings have been unavailable for years, while a further nine tracks are completely new to CD!"

VA Soul Power '68 2CD
"With Duke Reid's Treasure Isle catalogue having been mercilessly plundered over the past few decades, you would be forgiven for thinking that precious little of the legendary producer's work currently remains unavailable. This sensational collection of long-lost rock steady, proto reggae and soul tracks from 1968 demonstrates otherwise. The first dozen tracks are lifted directly from a recently discovered Trojan Records tape of a previously unissued compilation album, Soul Power, while the remainder of the material is in a similar vein, culminating in a fascinating and hugely entertaining 42 track collection of hits, rarities and previously unissued tracks. A sensational stand-alone compilation, while also perfectly complementing currently available Treasure Isle collections released by both Doctor Bird and Trojan, Soul Power '68 demonstrates that with a bit of digging, precious gems can still be found!"

VA Duke Reid International Disco Series: The Complete Collection 3CD
"The dancehall phenomenon of the late Seventies resulted in renewed interest in the sounds and rhythms of rock steady and early reggae; a development that prompted noted producer Sonia Pottinger to revisit many of the classic recordings in Duke Reid's legendary Treasure Isle catalogue that she now owned. The Duke had been a dominant force on the Jamaican music scene during the Sixties and early Seventies, when he had produced an array of hugely popular sides from his famed Treasure Isle studio on Bond Street, Kingston. Upon his premature demise in 1976, Pottinger inherited the business, although it was not until the close of the decade that that the true value of Reid's work began to be appreciated once more. Aside from re-releasing numerous classic Treasure Isle sides on 7" and a trio of 'Hottest Hits' long players, Pottinger also had Treasure Isle sound engineer, Errol Brown, remix many of Reid's most significant sides, updating the sound to fit the new dancehall style. The result was a series of 12" singles that saw issue in Jamaica on either the Treasure Isle or her own High Note label. Virtually all of these recordings, along with four previously unreleased sides, feature on this essential collection. And with all but a few of the tracks making their CD debut, this 3CD set is a must for all fans of rock steady, dub and dancehall, as well as admirers of Duke Reid's inimitable Treasure Isle sound."

SCOTTY School-Days CD
"After making his name in the late Sixties as a singer and producer, fronting popular Jamaican vocal trio, the Federals, David 'Scotty' Scott enjoyed further success leading the Chosen Few singing quartet before demonstrating his talents as a DJ, with a series of hugely popular 7" singles for leading Kingston music maker, Derrick Harriott. Early hits included 'Sesame Street', 'Riddle I This', 'Children Children' and the smash, 'Draw Your Brakes', which was further showcased in Perry Henzell's highly acclaimed cult classic movie, The Harder They Come. In response to the widespread popularity of the singer-come-DJ's work, Harriott issued a best-selling long player, School-Days, which showcased Scotty's aforementioned hits alongside previous unissued tracks, with the collection released internationally in 1971 by the world's leading Jamaican music enterprise, Trojan Records. Now, at long last, the album is finally reissued in its original artwork on CD, with its track-listing bolstered by the remainder of Scotty's singles for Harriott, plus the B-sides of each of his 7" singles, all of which make their CD debut. School-Days is a welcome reminder of this hugely popular artist's talent as a DJ and should be an essential purchase for fans of vintage reggae, cool rock steady and classic Jamaican toasting sounds."

MOERLEN'S GONG, PIERRE Downwind CD
"Remastered and expanded edition of this acclaimed album by Pierre Moerlen's Gong. By the late 1970s Percussionist Pierre Moerlen had taken over the leadership of GONG and had steered the band away from psychedelic space rock and took the band into a Jazz Rock direction, one in which the band excelled. After recording several albums with Virgin, the band now featured Hansford Rowe on bass, Ross Record on guitar, Benoit Moerlen on vibes and Francois Causse on percussion. Moerlen signed with Arista Records in 1978 and recorded this excellent album partially in Mike Oldfield's studio. Oldfield guested on the superb lengthy title track with fellow guest Steve Winwood, whilst Mick Taylor appeared on the track 'what You Know'. This Esoteric Recordings edition has been re-mastered from the original analogue master tapes and fully restores the original album artwork."

Now the album is available again on vinyl, as a double LP with two bonus tracks, "Moiré (Guitar & Horns)" and "Poren", B-sides from Tendency EP (2000)."Don't be misled by the title, though for there isn't a finger-snapping rhythm bebop lead anywhere on the album. Instead, Jelinek chooses to explore the visual effect moiré - two shifting patterns creating an implied third dimension - in the audio realm." --Alternative Press"The title acts as explanation for the studio technique that provided the basis for this album, snippets of other people's arrangements deconstructed through a sampler into loops and then splashed onto an audio canvas." --ATM"Jelinek's sound evolved out of his dislike for (and inability to play) keyboards." --RPM"Jelinek has abstracted his sources beyond recognition, looping his millisecond samples into flickering patterns of sonic moiré laid atop a dub techno framework. . . . Jelinek might as well have sampled a horn player's hissing intake of breath - it would have been 'jazz' enough for his purposes." --The Wire"It's a perfect inversion of conventional music, a sonic negative. Everything that would typically be foreground is moved back or pushed off the screen altogether, and the flecks of sonic debris that would normally be covered by other sounds are left to carry the melody and rhythm." --Pitchfork"All you need to know is that these onomatopoeic non-specific songs . . . are warm, paradisiacal creations." --NME"Listen carefully and you'll hear textures slowly unfolding and mutating. Presuming you've not fallen asleep of course." --iDJ"At times, it's all a bit dripping tap Japanese water torture; so sedentary it drowns in its own motionlessness" --DJ"Loop-Finding-Jazz-Records is a genuine modern classic whose re-release is anything but a cynical mortgage repayment exercise. Consider this a second chance, then pretend you had it all along." --Boomkat

PINK FLOYD Interstellar Overdrive LP
"Interstellar Overdrive" is an instrumental composition written in 1966 and is on Pink Floyd's 1967 debut album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, clocking in at almost ten minutes in length. "Interstellar Overdrive" was one of the first psychedelic instrumental improvisations ever recorded by a rock band. It was seen as Pink Floyd's first foray into space rock. It has also been described as an experimental and psychedelic as well as an example of proto-prog. Waters once called the song "an abstract piece". Not connected to pop music, a long improvisatory quality. The stereo version of the song has an organ moving from speaker to speaker, the effect is not on the mono version of the song, where it gains extra organ and guitar sounds, in fact the organ is very prominent during the first minute of the mono version-along with some special effects-but inaudible in the stereo mix. You will find both mono and stereo versions off the LP plus a rare edit (French only released at the time) and a long freak out version that clocks in at 16:49.

SONIC YOUTH Evol LP
2021 repress; LP version, includes free download code. "The third studio album by Sonic Youth, originally released in May 1986 on SST Records, shows the first signs that the band was ready to transform their no wave past into a greater alternative rock sensibility. 'EVOL ... mark[s] the true departure point of Sonic Youth's musical evolution,' says Pitchfork, who place the album in the #31 slot of their Top 100 Albums of The 1980s. 'In measured increments, Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo ... bring form to the formless, tune to the tuneless, and with the help of Steve Shelley's drums..., [impose] melody and composition on their trademark dissonance.' Stereogum likewise praises the album as one that is 'full of suspense..., the cornerstone [of] the Sonic Youth sound..., ground zero for the combination of chiming guitars and atonal skronk... [and] muggy delirium.... The virile "Tom Violence" sounds less written than coaxed from a cauldron, the sort of song that fogs windows. The offkilter [droning love song] "Starpower" ... is sung [by Kim Gordon] in a frosty [Nico-evoking] monotone. "In The Kingdom #19," featuring Mike Watt on bass and ... vocals [by Ranaldo]..., is a harrowing story of a highway wreck over a suitably edgy instrumental backing punctuated by ... live firecrackers into the vocal booth.' 'EVOL slithers into the unconscious,' notes Popstache. 'Once the [detuned melodies and haunting riffs and] final whispers of feedback [of "Expressway to Yr. Skull"] depart from the speakers..., the music [leaves] a faded footprint, forever reeling the listener back for another strange trip.'"

MISUNDERSTOOD, THE Children Of The Sun: The Complete Recordings 1965-66 2CD
"The Misunderstood must rank as one of the greatest cult bands of the sixties psychedelia era. The band began forging their innovative sound in Riverside, California, where they were discovered by DJ John Peel (then working in the US as John Ravenscroft). Having cut a few recordings locally, the band relocated to the UK on Peel's recommendation. In London, The Misunderstood signed to Fontana Records to cut what are consider six landmark tracks. Issued that December, 'I Can Take You To The Sun' remains a high watermark of the original psychedelia era and was backed by an explosive version of Bo Diddley's 'Who Do You Love', but the band broke up soon afterwards when singer Rick Brown was drafted. A second single, the blistering psych rock of 'Children Of The Sun' (backed by the anti-war gem 'I Unseen') was belatedly issued in February 1969 when a new line-up of the band re-signed to the label. In 1982, Cherry Red released the landmark compilation LP, Before The Dream Faded, which not only unveiled two further Fontana recordings, the high octane 'Find The Hidden Door' and 'My Mind' but also collated seven archive tracks from the band's Riverside days. Since then, additional recordings have surfaced on various retrospectives. Children Of The Sun finally assembles The Misunderstood's entire known output from 1965-1966 onto one package, suitably re-mastered by Alec Palao. With incisive sleeve-notes from Mike Stax (Ugly Things) and involvement with various original band members, and a handsome design from Andy Morten (Shindig!), this is truly the definitive document of a legendary underground band, assembled by those who love their music."

OBERON A Midsummer's Night Dream 2CD
"Recorded by students at the start of their summer holidays, Oberon's self-financed, 99-copies-only 1971 album A Midsummer's Night Dream is one of the rarest, most expensive artifacts to emerge from the primordial soup of the early seventies British underground scene. More importantly, it also boasts a reputation as one of the most vital, with one commentator suggesting that 'at least one of the few copies pressed should be preserved in the British Museum.' Having featured tracks from the album on our heavily-praised 3-CD British underground folk collections Dust On The Nettles and Sumer Is Icumen In, the Grapefruit label now celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of the making of A Midsummer's Night Dream by issuing the album in its entirety. With a second disc comprising a live show recorded roughly three months before the album, this remastered two-CD digipak edition -- featuring rare photos and a new essay on the band -- is the definitive release of a fascinating dropped stitch in the fabric of the early Seventies underground folk cosmology."

GRANSTROM, DAVID Empty Room LP
On Empty Room David Granström works with slow transformations, cyclical and isometric patterns as well as just intonation as a way to create harmonic stability, allowing his long-form pieces to develop their own unique temporal and spatial qualities. A prolific figure in Stockholm's experimental drone scene and a collaborator of Hallow Ground label mates Maria W Horn and Mats Erlandsson, the Swedish composer navigates through moments of quietude and crushing volume on these five tracks. Sonically and atmospherically, the pieces on Empty Room simultaneously call to mind Fennesz's most meditative work or the physical experience of seeing Sunn O))) live, blending guitar recordings and synthesized sounds with forceful effects similar to those of Mario Díaz de Leon's Oneirogen project while still being as moving and delicate as Alessandro Cortini's solo work. The album is marked by melodies and harmonies that are the product of a peculiar working process that turned the composer into an intent listener collaborating with, rather than simply using technology.

CAIRO FREE JAZZ ENSEMBLE Heliopolis LP
2021 repress. Holiday Records present the first ever authorized reissue Cairo Free Jazz Ensemble's Heliopolis, originally released in 1970. Released under license from the artist. One of the great projects in Egyptian jazz, the Cairo Free Jazz Ensemble was formed by Salah Ragab and Hartmut Geerken as an avant-garde offshoot of The Cairo Jazz Band, the first jazz big band in the country. Formed in 1968 when Ragab was appointed chief of Egypt's Military Department of Music and had at his disposal a vast staff of musicians (almost three thousand!), an entire military building, and a full range collection of musical instruments. When encountering this recording, issued in 1970, the deep resonance found between the ensemble and its American counterparts becomes startlingly clear. Heliopolis is a stunning blend of big band spiritual jazz, the music of the Middle East, and the fire and energy of free jazz, unveiling a deep creative resonance with the contemporaneous efforts of Pharaoh Sanders, Phil Cohran, and of course Sun Ra, combining jazz instrumentation and musical style with indigenous melodies and instruments to create a musical object with few parallels. The album is a throbbing, squealing, wild journey through the creative heights of sound channeling swirling, focused artistry that taps future and past in a single blow. Copies of the original pressing are between the rarest and most sought-after records in canon of recorded jazz.

MERZBOW/PRURIENT Black Crows Cyborg (Blue Vinyl) LP
LP version. Dark and light blue vinyl with black/white/green splatter. The skylines of Tokyo and New York City are impenetrable. On the streets it is cold -- the ravens have blocked out the sun. The barbed chicken wire that surrounds the cities wave scraps of plastic shreds of circuit boards like surrender flags. Ravens have become the society, they are now the rulers. Black Crows Cyborg is the first collaboration from noise titans Merzbow and Prurient. With more than seven hundred releases between them, this LP finds new ways to traverse the empty cities and navigate the cylinders. These two side-length tracks of cryptic dissonance are underscored by the slightest hint of deconstructed computer synthesis and cyborg vocals. Ravens remember actions from specific humans, and can warn them of impending danger -- or choose not to. As the conspiracy of crows overwhelms mankind's encampment and integrates with the industrial leftovers, Black Crows Cyborg is the soundtrack for the overwhelming embrace under dark mechanical wings. Deluxe embossed cover with mini poster.

KMRU Logue LP
Nairobi-based electronic musician/sound-artist Joseph Kamaru -- KMRU -- signs to Injazero for the release of his beautiful compendium album Logue, comprising works from his past years of self-releasing. KMRU is uniquely positioned between the rarely-married cultures of ambient and African musics, entwining his compositions with field recordings from his native Kenya and the surrounding countries of East Africa. Though the deep, tectonic slowness of his music can be compared to the work of Lawrence English, William Basinski, Stars of the Lid, Kamaru's core culture shines through in a pure and singular way. Found within Logue's pieces are radiant melodic antiphony commonplace in African music, and huge, spacious drones that reveal his love for ambient soundscapes, held effortlessly together by field recordings and analog synthesis. "Every track reflects an event, space or location," Joseph writes. "The pieces are developed from field recordings, improvisation and spontaneity." Formed of tracks written from 2017 to 2019, Logue represents an artist not only in command of his form but also willing to develop and evolve, ready to deconstruct and radically refocus his music to explore new contours of experimental and ambient sound-design. Some of the earliest compositions found on Logue -- 2017's "Jinja Encounters", for example -- represent Joseph's first trips outside his homeland and the experience of new sights and new climates, full of discovery and wonder. The synth line of 2018's "Argon" pops and bubbles, mimicking bright African melodic vibrancy while a churning, static distortion threatens to breach the surface, revealing a sophisticated, measured understanding of texture and timbral interplay. "OT", from late 2018, jumps with joyous calls and deftly panned arrhythmic percussion, a new subtlety of light and dark gained from experience and experimentation. Consistent across the entire album is intensely personal and powerfully intuitive expression, crossing continental divides with a singular elegance. KMRU is a young, recently debuting musician. He has self-released on Bandcamp for the past few years, and 2020 saw his first official, international releases, including the scintillating Peel album for Editions Mego. Resident Advisor listed him in their "15 East African Artists You Need To Hear" article in 2018. He appears regularly at the celebrated Nyege Nyege Festival in Uganda, and has also performed at CTM Festival and Gamma Festival. Clear vinyl.

German rock band, Organisation, is often referred to as the prototype or predecessor of Kraftwerk -- the godfathers of electronic music. In fact, it was the first iteration of Kraftwerk and if the band had managed to overrule its record label, RCA, Tone Float would have been credited as such. But given that the album was to be released only in the United Kingdom, the label opted for the more Anglicized name, "Organisation". Tone Float is the only album produced under this name and is a seminal example of the genre. Audiences in West Germany were fortunate enough to watch and listen to the whole album, played live for German television station, EDF, and it is this broadcast featured here. The bonus track "Vor Dem Blauen Bock" (more accurately, "Rückstoß Gondoliere"), is a notable rarity in that it includes a later Organisation line-up consisting of Kraftwerk's Florian Schneider and Klaus Dinger, and Michael Rother who would go on to form the band, Neu! LEE, HOWIE Birdy Island CD
Swirling layers of OST-style sound design, dreamy choir vocals and traditional Chinese folk combine across eight dynamic and transportive tracks on Birdy Island, the latest album by Beijing-based producer/artist, Howie Lee. Fresh off the back of several high impact, club-centering album releases on Maloca, SVBKVLT, and his influential, Do Hits label, on top of remixes for artists including Lawfawndah, Charlie XCX, and Sophie, Lee presents his most organic and expansive project to date. Written, produced, and recorded entirely by Lee at the back end of 2018 (with the exception of the album's resident four-piece choir made up of rising Beijing artist, Fishdoll, Shanghai singer/producer, Yehaiyahan and West by West, with Lee himself also included), Birdy Island's almost exclusively acoustic yet broad sound palette threads continuities between ceremonial Taoist music, early Buchla synth experiments, and FWD nights at London's Plastic People. "This album just came very natural. It was all recorded little by little. Layer upon layer. The approach was to just record. I had all these instruments around me and I just thought, I'm gonna play and keep playing." Howie's latest offering is as enchanting as it is boundlessly imaginative. "I've always had this concept in my mind about making an album based around an island." Loosely based around Lee's own long-formed concept of a floating Sicilian theme park, co-inhabited by both birds and ancestral spirits, Howie remarks: "Birdy Island to me is a palace in the clouds and the birds reworshipped like Gods. Not like a western God though." Reminiscent of Hayao Miyazaki's "Laputa" (in the 1986 film Castle In The Sky), Lee's BirdyIsland has been built by a Chinese investment company seeking to re-syncour relationship with the spiritual and natural world after years of economic collapse and degradation, and who invite Howie to compose the park's soundtrack. Inside Birdy Island's 30-minute gallery of collaged sound, Lee draws on a wide history of traditional pan-Asian music, filtered through his unique lens of contemporary electronic production.

MUM Yesterday Was Dramatic - Today Is OK (20th Anniversary Edition) 3LP
2021 repress; triple LP version. Gatefold sleeve. Morr Music present a 20th Anniversary Edition of múm's Yesterday Was Dramatic - Today Is OK. In 1999, on December 23rd to be precise, the electronic music landscape changed forever. On that day, the now legendary Icelandic band múm released their debut album Yesterday Was Dramatic - Today Is OK. The thing is though, back in the day, hardly anybody realized. It was Christmas after all, people were busy with potentially more important things and didn't pay attention to some kids selling records on Reykjavík's high street. Thankfully, those ten tracks weren't overlooked for long. On the contrary: the album went on to become one of the most influential building blocks of what back then was called electronica and today is considered an art form playing a crucial and important role in shaping and defining the rich electronic music culture of the 21st century. Now, 20 years after the record dropped onto planet Earth, Morr Music is re-issuing the remastered album with its original artwork, adding newly commissioned re-works: a note-for-note representation of "Smell Memory" by Kronos Quartet (with additional drums by múm's Samuli Kosminen), a gentle reinterpretation of "Random Summer" by acclaimed pianist and composer Hauschka and an otherworldly new version of "Ballad Of The Broken String" recorded by label mate Sóley. In 1999, electronic music was in full bloom. Yet the concept of using electronic sounds in acoustic-based productions (or vice versa) was still in its infancy. Many producers were trying, most of them failed. The results felt often forced, fabricated, unimaginative, random, and forgettable. New ideas require new mindsets after all. With Yesterday Was Dramatic - Today Is OK, múm established a new approach in music production. Instead of setting a fixed agenda and working with a distinct hierarchy for their sonic palette, Gyða Valtýsdóttir, Kristín Anna Valtýsdóttir, Gunnar Örn Tynes, and Örvar Smárason let each instrument and sound source be true to itself, creating an ever-evolving universe of sonic bliss. Combining drill-and-bass-inspired beat-chopping, future-informed DSP-programming, ethereal vocal work, indie rock's boominess, folk music's soulful brittleness, and a lofty feeling for melody and arrangement, the album is a rare example of musical transcendence and remains impossible to categorize. Many of the ideas formulated and recorded for the album quickly became an integral part of the canonical self-conception musicians around the world were and still are aspiring to. Includes four remixes produced in the early 2000s by Ruxpin, Bix, µ-Ziq, and Biogen.

BOOTSY'S RUBBER BAND Stretchin' Out In Bootsy's Rubber Band CD
"In 1970 Bootsy Collins' funk band The Pacemakers were hired by James Brown as his backing band and they became known as The J.B.'s. In 1976 Bootsy released Stretchin' Out In Bootsy's Rubber Band', an offshoot act of a 1971-1975 Parliament-Funkadelic period, produced by funk-brother George Clinton. This was his first release with his Rubber Band. It's also one of his best albums. Stretchin' Out still stands out as a funk classic. Bootsy is not only a meritorious voice in the funk genre, his bass sounds like no one. With Bootsy on board you get the max of slammin' funk, a killer groove and all the stuff that makes you move. Bootsy ranks, IMHO as one of the three greatest bass players along with Stanley Clarke and Larry Graham."

SHOCKING BLUE 3rd Album LP
"Shocking Blue was a Dutch rock band from The Hague that was at their peak in the sixties and seventies and gained major cross-Atlantic success. The band was founded in 1967 and after recruiting vocalist Mariska Veres, they soon became huge. With their single 'Venus' they became the first Dutch band ever to reach the first spot on the American Billboard Hot 100. The band had a series of subsequent hits but decided to call it a day in 1975. Their influence reached well beyond their generation: even bands like Nirvana and The Prodigy used Shocking Blue's 'Love Buzz'. 3rd Album is, strangely enough, not their third full-length album but their fourth. It was originally released in 1971. This reissue comes with six bonus tracks consisting of singles and b-sides. This release is available as a limited edition of 1500 individually numbered copies on turquoise coloured vinyl."

SAKAMOTO, DAVID BYRNE AND CONG SU, RYUICHI The Last Emperor LP
"The Last Emperor is a lavish historical epic directed by the great Italian filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci and starring John Lone, Joan Chen, and Peter O'Toole. The film tells the life story of Pu Yi, the last monarch of the Chinese Qing dynasty prior to the republican revolution in 1911. The score for The Last Emperor was created by an unlikely trio: Ryuichi Sakamoto, David Byrne, and Cong Su. The soundtrack is a theme-filled exploration of the sounds and musical traditions of Imperial China, filtered through some very contemporary sensibilities. Sakamoto's contribution comprises nine cues and is focused around his main theme: a beautiful, lyrical melody for the full orchestra. It's soft, wistful, and introspective, but becomes increasingly dramatic. Byrne contributes five cues, and the first one is the most recognisable, as it's the main title theme playing over the film's stylish opening credits sequence. It emerges from a set of evocative Chinese percussion items, with the melody being carried by a gorgeous, lilting erhu. It's traditional and wholly steeped in Chinese classical music, but it has a real emotional weight that will connect with westerners. Cong Su's contribution to the soundtrack album comprises just one cue -- 'Lunch' -- but there is much more of his music in the film; Su was basically responsible for writing all the period-specific Chinese source music one hears in and around the imperial palace during Pu Yi's childhood. All in all, Sakamoto, Byrne and Cong Su deliver an excellent score. The LP comes with an insert with liner notes and photos."

MILK AND HONEY BAND, THE Songs From Truleigh Hill LP
LP version. Essentially Robert White -- erstwhile mainstay keyboardist/guitarist/songwriter for early 1990s noisenik Britpop-deniers, Levitation -- The Milk And Honey Band exist so that the world doesn't have to invent another band as contrarily/culturally dissimilar to any other band as contrarily/culturally dissimilar to them. The band's name was originally thought up as an antidote to the frailty and vapidity of a 1990s scene that White felt alienated from as well as handy way to disguise the fact it was a solo project. Correspondingly, the songs that The Milk And Honey Band conjure up, have more in keeping with the sublime, reflective nature of a novel like Cider With Rosie than they do with the self-congratulatory, back-slapping musical fare often associated with the indie scene. And, oh yes, the Milk and Honey Band are defiantly indie. In 2004 White signed to Andy Partridge of XTC's label and released The Secret Life Of The Milk And Honey Band, and four years after that, the band released their first masterpiece. Dog Eared Moonlight was the band's second appearance on Partridge's label and accorded the kind of critical attention that makes everyone sit up and notice. "Immaculately arranged acoustic-rock and power-pop numbers about love and break-up revealing an Elliott Smith-style gift for combining bitter sentiments with sweet harmonies" --Financial Times

GIRLS AT OUR BEST Pleasure 2LP
In 1980, post punk pop indie band Girls At Our Best came out of nowhere (Well, Leeds actually) with "Getting Nowhere Fast" and was the NME's "Single Of The Week" reaching the Top 10 of the indie chart. The band, fronted by Judy Evans, released four further singles plus the album Pleasure which reached the UK album charts in 1981, before splitting up two years after that first record. Girls At Our Best were one of the finest, most life-affirming of a new breed of independent bands who cropped up at the turn of the '80s -- long-standing fan John Peel once referred to them as one of the few groups that made the period bearable. Formed in Leeds from the ashes of punk band SOS, the group were fronted by distinctive female vocalist Jude "Jo" Evans, forming a songwriting team with guitarist James Alan and bass player Gerard Swift after they met at art college. All four of their singles for their own Record Records, Rough Trade, and Happy Birthday Records are included here as bonus tracks on a 45rpm 12" --including the wonderful "Getting Nowhere Fast" (later covered by The Wedding Present), its coruscating B-side "Warm Girls", "Politics!", "Go For Gold", and "Fast Boyfriends". Their influence can be seen on innumerable C86/indie bands who came afterwards. Comes on half-and-half, color vinyl: disc one on yellow/magenta and disc two on turquoise/magenta. Second disc contains the singles and B sides; 45rpm. Gatefold sleeve with printed inner sleeves containing lyrics, photos, and interview by The Mouth Magazine; also includes "Pleasure Bag" containing four postcards, two stickers, a stencil, repro Tour Poster, repro promo posters for "Go For Gold" and "Politics/Its Fashion" singles.

BIG HANDS Lakamha 12"
Baroque Sunburst co-founder and Honest Jon's team member, Big Hands displays his potent production prowess on the next Oscilla Sound release with three tracks touching on organic soundscapes, illbience, and muddy bass oddities. In the old city of Lakamha ancient tombs stand tall and ruined, woven with moss. Birds as old as time beat their wings over tropical forests; their cries bouncing off wet rock lassoed with carvings of Mayan symbols. "1346" begins with stirring synths and dub-echoing, low frequencies encompassing both spatiality and aberration before the heads-down atmospheric roller "Calix's Head" lays down sharp, acid flutters and ghostly ripples. "Louis H Theme" is an ode to the radical minimalist composer Moondog (Louis Thomas Hardin), whose experiments with polyrhythms continue to influence numerous generations of musicians. The track features swampy bass that balances weightlessly with the hypnotic sonics and breezy rhythms.

FLOWER TRAVELLIN' BAND Satori LP
2021 repress. Deluxe LP format; 180 gram pressing. Reissue of the second Flower Travellin' Band album, originally issued by Atlantic Records in Japan in 1971. Satori is a conceptual hard rock/psych album driven by Hideki Ishima's furious guitar licks which erupt and explode over the harmonic heart beat of the drums and bass. Yamanaka's banshee-like vocal style turned him into an occidental Iggy Pop or Robert Plant while the band itself was rapidly becoming Japan's answer to Led Zeppelin. Satori is a huge album in every way. From power chords to Eastern-tinged North African six-string freak-outs and crashing tom-toms, the band flexes its collective muscle from start to finish. In short, this is a real rock classic of the type they simply don't make any more.

WIRE Pink Flag LP
2021 repress; LP version. "Wire's first three albums need no introduction. They are the three classic albums on which Wire's reputation is based. Moreover, they are the recordings that minted the post-punk form. This was adopted by other bands, but Wire were there first. It has been a number of years since these albums were readily available. The aim with these new vinyl and CD releases is to approximate the original statements as closely as possible, but with remastered audio. The vinyl releases have the same covers and inners as the originals (minus the Harvest logo). The digipack CDs have identical track listings to their vinyl counterparts. These versions should be considered Wire's classic 1970s albums, pure and undiluted. Usually contextualized against a backdrop of two years of the growing cultural importance of punk rock--Wire's debut Pink Flag, released in December 1977 on EMI's progressive label Harvest was in fact was something 'other.' To the keen cultural commentator, the timing and label of its release will register two essential facts about it. Firstly, too late (a year after the Pistol's debut release) to be part of UK punk's first flush and secondly that the band were signaling something beyond punk by their choice of label. Further investigation would reveal twenty-one tracks, some of them clocking in at well under a minute and covering a range of tempi well beyond the buzzsaw rockabilly that had become, even by the second half of 1977, punk's staple."

WIRE Chairs Missing LP
2021 repress; LP version. "1978's Chairs Missing represented perhaps the biggest conceptual leap made during this period of Wire and was widely misunderstood at the time yet it remains, to the band and production crew Wire's favorite '70s album. If Pink Flag proposed an almost cut and paste approach to deconstructing rock history, Chairs Missing proposed something more radical, a definite futurism with much less influence from its antecedents. Chairs Missing was at once more stark and more lush than its predecessor and has exerted its own influence on the course of cultural history, having laid down one of the earliest (if not the earliest) blueprints for the genuinely post-punk aesthetic."

KESZLER, ELI Stadium 2LP
2021 repress. Double LP version, in reverse board-printed inners and double-width spine jacket. New York-based artist Eli Keszler is at the apex of his career. This year alone he's had a solo exhibition in the UK, performed with Laurel Halo, collaborated with author László Krasznahorkai, taught experimental composition and performance in the Pyrenees, and toured with Oneohtrix Point Never. Stadium is his new album for Shelter Press. As his ninth solo record, Stadium reflects his move from Brooklyn to Manhattan, where he produced the album. The constant motion and ever-changing landscapes of the island helped him modify and shape his sound into a new kind of film noir. There is a startling amount of expression at play on each track, where intersections of melody, restraint and rhythm are used to challenge the idea of memory, impression and space. Keszler is often mistaken for an electronic musician, but in fact his sounds are raw and natural, produced by hand. His performance with drumset and acoustic percussion are central to his work. He produces almost impossible textures through self-realized methodologies: cascading melodies, a shadow of voices, and a unique pointillist materiality. Although playing with the intensity of digitally-created music, his communications are done live with no processing; this is what gives Stadium its depth and warmth. On Stadium, Keszler uses lived experience to realize the most wide-ranging sound he's created to date, drawing out textures from overlapping geographies and transforming these recordings into starting points for composition. He then builds on these environments to create subliminal spaces for his music, which is pushed to new levels with string and brass arrangements. Is this the "stadium" referred to in the title: a larger network of sound and bodies moving continually, oscillating and turning in on itself? Keszler has explored these ideas before with notable projects such as his Manhattan Bridge installation Archway (2015) Stadium takes these long-running ideas to new depths. Keszler states: "The recordings on Stadium are inverted. They are landscapes scaled for the singular, like a mass collecting in one arena, this music compresses city spaces, genre and instrumentalism into an amorphous form. On the record, there are ruptures of information and happenstance. Like a game, it could go any number of ways."

PIO, GIUSTO Motore Immobile LP
2021 repress, available in March. Soave present the first vinyl reissue of Giusto Pio's Motore Immobile, originally released in 1979. One of the most striking documents of Italy's minimalist movement, Giusto Pio's Motore Immobile is a masterwork with few equivalents. Produced by Franco Battiato in 1979, at the outset of a long and fruitful period of collaboration between the two composers, and issued by the legendary Cramps Records, its triumphs were met by silence, before falling from view. Emerging on vinyl for the first time since its original pressing, Motore Immobile now sits within a reappraisal of a large neglected body of efforts made by the Italian avant-garde during the second half of the 1970s and early '80s. It is singular, but not alone. It resonates within a collective world of shimmering sound, one familiar to fans of Battiato, Lino Capra Vaccina, Luciano Cilio, Roberto Cacciapaglia, Francesco Messina, and Raul Lovisoni. An exercise in elegant restraint - note and resonance held to the most implicit need. Everything between root and embellishment has been stripped away. A sublime organ drone, against interventions of deceptively simple structural complexity - executed by piano, violin, and voice. A sonic sculpture reaching heights which few have touched. A thing of beauty and an album as perfect as they come. The reemergence of Motore Immobile heralds what is unquestionably one of the most important reissues of 2017.

Om Kalsoum's mythical life story of a poor peasant girl who grew up to become the face of Egypt is a 20th-century fairytale. Almost half a decade after her death the power of her music and singing is still moving the hearts of millions of people worldwide. At the end of her overwhelming career she was introduced to the young but brilliant composer Baligh Hamdy who wrote this 30-minute lasting monument for her in 1970. In the footsteps of Mohamed Abdel Wahab, the godfather of Egyptian modern music, Baligh Hamdy refreshed the classical Egyptian orchestra sound with the addition of stylish instruments like electric guitar (Omer Khorshid), organ (Hany Mehanna), accordion, and horns that were adapted to the eastern tonal system. Together with the immortal Alf Leila We Leila (SMR 001LP), El Hob Kollo must undeniably be archived under the best recordings ever made in music history. A Radio Martiko product. PALESTINE, CHARLEMAGNE From Etudes to Cataclysms 2CD
2021 restock. This is the first solo work by Charlemagne Palestine on Sub Rosa -- the first but probably not the last -- the label would also like to re-release a series of his classic works, which have previously been unavailable. From Etudes to Cataclysms is one of Charlemagne's most important works. An impressive composition of more than 140 minutes based on a unique instrument -- a double piano on which one keyboard is played by the feet. "Several years ago, Martin Kaufmann of Kaufmann Pianos in Brussels told me he had seen and heard an amazing and unique instrument in Italy. A piano with two separate bodies! One with a normal grand piano body having 88 notes to be played with the fingers, and below this piano was a second piano also with a grand piano body that could play simultaneously the lower 37 notes of a grand piano with pedals for the feet. Having known my music for years and that I had been a carilloneur where one plays with both fists and feet simultaneously, Martin Kaufmann thought that the Borgato would be perfect for my music. The inventor of this unique instrument was Luigi Borgato from Padua, who developed this instrument with his wife, Paola. I was intrigued, and through an intermediary, the Italian pianist Roberto Posseda visited the Borgatos in Lonigo where they have their workshop and found that their instrument was perfect for my body and my music. We immediately decided to organize recording sessions in a local church for one week and From Etudes to Cataclysms is the result!" --Charlemagne Palestine, October 2007

CAGE, JOHN Early Electronic and Tape Music CD
2021 restock. "I believe the use of noise to make music will continue and increase until we reach a music produced through the aid of electrical instruments which will make available for musical purposes any and all sounds that can be heard." --John Cage, 1937."Although John Cage occasionally worked in large, sophisticated studios -- for example, when he composed 'Fontana Mix' in 1958 -- his approach to electronic and tape music was often uncomplicated, makeshift, and pragmatic, employing simple tabletop devices: tape machines, phonograph cartridges, contact microphones, record players, portable radios, etc. He developed a soundworld that was utterly new, radical and demanding. It heralded the age of the loudspeaker, mass communication and Marshall McLuhan's 'global village.' The hiss, crackle and hum of electronic circuits, and the disembodied sounds, snatched by radio from the ether, spoke of the 20th century. Langham Research Centre works within the tradition firmly established by Cage, using resources that would have been available to him. For the realization of Cartridge Music, moving iron phonograph pickups were sourced and restored. These have a knurled screw designed to hold a steel phonograph needle and, in the piece, other objects are inserted and amplified: pieces of wire, toothpicks, paperclips, etc. The realization of 'Fontana Mix' includes the individual mono tracks from Cage's original tapes created in 1958. These are played using open-reel tape machines. These practices ensure we work within the limitations that Cage experienced and enable us to get close to the soundworld he inhabited." --Robert Worby, Langham Research Centre

LETTERS FROM MOUSE An Garradh LP
Subexotic presents their first project with talented producer Letters From Mouse. Fashioned in the necessity of lockdown isolation, An Gàrradh (Scots Gaelic for "The Garden") invites the listener to look again, and contemplate his garden view as a vibrant yet reflective space. A masterful exponent of modular synthesis, LFM skillfully maintains a compelling sense of the sublime in the mundane throughout. "An Gàrradh is an album inspired by the goings on in my back garden. The garden faces the local stream (The White Burn) and woodland that is teaming with all sorts of creatures, many of which visit the garden. Watching these little visitors go about their business is a wonderful way to relax and switch off from the world. No matter what is going on these little guys are busy doing their thing in their little world. This album is meant to be listened to while staring out of your window, preferably with a mug of something tasty. Just take some time out and watch the things that happen right on your doorstep, it can be utterly fascinating. It's a great thought to take into the process of creating music and I do hope that this comes across in the tunes. Many of these were live performances using a modular synthesizer setup with a bit of post-production and effects applied at that stage. The unpredictable nature of modular gear really matches the behavior of these creatures. Not quite local but thanks to Josh Stewart aka Kh3rtis for the watery sounding samples. Josh recorded these in Vietnam and kindly shared them. Just for reference Christian is a squirrel (or was) and Gerald is a field mouse."

VA MIEN (YAO) - Canon Singing in China, Vietnam, Laos LP
Other-worldly Canon singing from MIEN (YAO) hill tribes in China, Vietnam, and Laos. Raw, ethereal, and cosmic -- for fans of Bulgarian choir and Javanese Court Gamelan and Sundanese styles of vocal ascension. Although their name comes from a pejorative Chinese expression that means "dog" or "savage" -- stemming from a legend that they were founded by a dog who saved the life of the daughter of a Chinese emperor and thus was rewarded with her hand in marriage -- the largest branch of the YAO minority call themselves MIEN, which means simply "people". They number four million and are spread over the southern Chinese provinces of Guizhou, Guangxi, Yunnan, and also migrated to Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand over the last centuries. Part of the Miao-Yao (Hmong Mien) group of the Sino-Tibetan ethnolinguistic family, they have many subgroups, usually defined according to colors of their traditional clothes. Because of their Chinese origins, the Yao consider themselves to be culturally superior to other hill tribes, having incorporated elements of Taoism into their own beliefs as well as adopting the Chinese written system for men. The Yao women produce wonderful embroidered cloth and that's the main reason why they're being noticed by outsiders. Recorded and produced in the field by Laurent Jeanneau (Kink Gong), this limited edition LP comes with a two-sided insert of photos and liner notes with extended track descriptions by Laurent Jeanneau. Features Keo And Na (Laos), Deng Fu Mei And Zhang Wu Mei (China), Yang Chun Jin And Yang Bao Cheng (China), and Gap Choun (Vietnam).

COLTRANE, ALICE Lord Of Lords LP
2021 repress. "Originally released in 1972, Lord Of Lords was Alice Coltrane's final album for Impulse! and the last installment in her awe-inspiring trilogy that also included Universal Consciousness and World Galaxy. While all three records featured strings alongside a jazz ensemble, Lords Of Lords stood apart from its predecessors due to the sheer size of the orchestra (12 violins, 6 violas and 7 cellos, arranged and conducted by Coltrane herself) and its refined, blissful performances -- shining a vital light on the devotional path that she would follow for the rest of her career. On the first two pieces, 'Andromeda's Suffering' and 'Sri Rama Ohnedaruth' (titled after the spiritual name for her late husband), Alice's dazzling piano and harp blend perfectly with the blanket of strings, while the haunting rhythm section of Charlie Haden and Ben Riley and a magnificent, droning electric organ emerge immaculately on the title track and closer 'Going Home.' Coltrane's musical vision is bold in its imagination and cosmic in scope, yet remains intensely personal and immediate. Lord Of Lords points inward as much as to the beyond, recalling her classical roots and recasting Eastern modes to radically invert the American avant-garde and spiritual jazz traditions. This first-time vinyl reissue has been carefully remastered from the original master tapes."

LEWIS/RED LILY QUINTET, JAMES BRANDON Jesup Wagon LP
LP version. "Jesup Wagon is the astonishing new work from the fertile creative mind of ascendant tenor saxophonist-composer James Brandon Lewis. Voted Rising Star Tenor Saxophonist in the 2020 DownBeat Magazine International Critic's Poll, for his ninth release (and his TAO Forms debut) he leads the Red Lily Quintet, an exceptional inter-generational ensemble assembled specifically for this project. The album speaks eloquently to the forever-evolving continuum of the jazz tradition. Essentially a collection of tone poems -- or, as Duke Ellington might have called them, "tone parallels" -- Duke being the instigator of this type of programmatic jazz. Jesup Wagon is an evocative appreciation of the life and legacy of turn-of-the-19th century African-American musician-painter-writer-scientist George Washington Carver. Sustainable agriculture was a key component of Carver's prescient thoughts into action; his Jesup Wagon was a part of that. The album consists of seven pieces that create a portrait of stunning clarity and depth. Jesup Wagon marks another remarkable step for James as player and composer. Helping him get it all out on this release is the Red Lily Quintet, anchored by the tectonic rhythm section of bassist William Parker and drummer Chad Taylor, and rounded out by cornetist Kirk Knuffke and cellist Chris Hoffman. The album also features liner notes by the great American historian Robin D.G. Kelley, who in 2009 released the definitive Monk biography, Thelonious Monk: The Life and Times of an American Original. His notes contain much historical detail about Carver, particularly as they relate to the tunes."

GEESIN, RON Pot-Boilers: Ron Geesin Soundtracks to Stephen Dwoskin Films 1966-1970 LP
2021 restock. Sublime, unique, sexy, and peculiar unreleased scores by electronic and jazz pioneer Ron Geesin, made for the films by maverick director Stephen Dwoskin. Geesin made great music and worked with Pink Floyd. Dwoskin made odd films, most of them are in the BFI permanent collection. These superb unreleased soundtracks come from a fascinating, progressive, and important period in British film history. They represent an intriguing collaboration between the lively Ron Geesin from Scotland and the American Stephen Dwoskin, who both met in London. Musically they are minimal, charismatic, and quite groundbreaking. Ron's soundtracks for Dwoskin' films, recorded in the Geesins's flat, encompassed Ron's very eclectic range of styles -- madcap piano and fretted banjo as well as tape manipulation. Aside from Ron's soundtracks, some of which belong to films that no longer exist (including Pot-Boiler). There was no London equivalent to the underground film scene that Dwoskin had known in New York, and his films remained unseen until such a scene began to come into being, in the autumn of 1966. Some of them made their debut at the Mercury Theatre, near Notting Hill Gate, that September. Dwoskin wrote Alone, starring Zelda Nelson (from Ron Rice's Chumlum), and Chinese Checkers, with Beverly Grant and Dwoskin's friend Joan Adler. Soon both Dwoskin and Geesin became involved in the nascent London Film-Makers' Co-op, which put on screenings in Better Books on Charing Cross Road. In the same autumn, Dwoskin moved into a flat almost opposite the Geesins on Elgin Crescent. More collaborations followed, including Naissant, on which Gavin Bryars, whom Geesin had met during a stint on the northern club circuit with novelty act Dr Crock and His Crackpots, played double bass. Around the end of 1967, Geesin released his first solo LP, A Raise of Eyebrows, and Dwoskin won recognition at the Fourth Experimental Film Competition, aka EXPRMNTL 4, an occasional film festival staged at Knokke-le-Zoute in Belgium. By now the films had optical soundtracks. For Moment, a single-shot film, Geesin provided his most experimental score yet. At the time of its debut in 1970, Dwoskin and the Geesins were sharing a house in Ladbroke Grove. By then, Ron was working with Pink Floyd, and soon afterwards he and Frankie moved out to the country, to be replaced by Bryars both in the house and as Dwoskin's principal collaborator. Until now these scores have remained part of the Geesin Archive and have never been issued. Sleeve notes by Ron Geesin.

VA Bruton Brutoff: The Ambient, Electronic and Pastoral Sounds of The Bruton Library Catalogue LP
2021 repress on orange vinyl forthcoming... Rare musical magic from the Bruton library catalog -- ambient, spacey, pastoral, and electronic. Music by John Cameron, Alan Hawkshaw, Francis Monkman, Brian Bennett, and more -- all total masters of the scene. Over the last three decades Jonny Trunk has collected and written about library music. But he's never had a great deal of luck with the Bruton catalog. By this he means that he's never stumbled across a massive stash, or lucked-out buying a huge run for practically nothing. But he did manage to get about 25 in one hit about 20 years ago when the BBC shut down their "TV Training Department" near Lime Grove and also when a box of Brutons ended up being dumped at a hospital radio, and they didn't want the records, so Jonny got a call. There are lots of Bruton albums in existence -- over 330 LPs in the vinyl catalog, issued between 1978 and 1985. That's a lot of music to wade through if you are looking for sublime modern-day sounds. For many years now the "trophies" from the Bruton catalog have been the beat or action driven LPs -- the two Drama Montage (BRJ2 and BRJ8) albums have always been the big hitters, and others such as High Adventure (BRK2) too. But Jonny has always found himself drawn to the lime green LPs, the pastoral, peaceful albums (The BRDs), which were full of the kind of gentle, lovely music that would turn up in Take Hart as Tony was painting a woodpecker or a badger or an Autumn tree. The other Brutons he likes are the orange ones (The BRIs) simply because they are full of experimental futuristic electronics and would remind him of 1980s TV backgrounds. This LP series includes Brian Bennett's cosmic classic Fantasia (BRI 10). Jonny has been known to refer to this style of library music as "Krypton Factor library", because it's exactly what that strange but successful 1980s TV quiz show sounded like. Not only does this album bring together a set of fabulous cues that would cost the average man in the street a month's wages, but it also chops out the need to listen to other tracks on library albums that are nowhere near as good. The cues here all date from between 1978 and 1984. Clear vinyl; edition of 500. Also features Frank Ricotti, Johnny Scott, Frank Reidy / Eric Allen, Les Hurdle / Frank Ricotti, Orlando Kimber / John Keliehor, and Steve Gray.

NORMAN AND FLYING MOJITO BROS, RUDY Back To The Streets (Flying Mojito Bros Refritos) 12"
"It's a big one. Americana disco wizards the Flying Mojito Bros have worked their magic on Rudy Norman's cult AOR track, and in so doing have, in the words of Rudy himself, 'brought Back To The Streets to the future'. For the first time, Back To The Streets (1980) finds itself remastered on 12" vinyl alongside official remixes commissioned by the artist, in a welcome new package that will please lovers of glistening disco reworks as well as those seeking a vinyl copy of the original track. The sun-baked electronic disco 'refritos' arrive in three versions to suit all occasions -- straight up, extended dub and radio edit -- and no doubt have the potential to resonate with the huge worldwide desire to get back out there and bond meaningfully with our fellow brothers and sisters in public. It looks the part too, with Flying Mojito Bros also directing a colorful and cosmic reimagining of the original cover art via illustrator Nick Potts, reflecting the bros' transportation of Rudy's West Coast vibes into one of their own Southwestern desertscape settings."

VA Feten: Rare Jazz Recordings from Spain 2LP
Last copies; gatefold double LP version. "When discussing the output of jazz recorded in Spain during the 1960s and 1970s, most conversations tend to simply list Tete Montoliu's discography and Pedro Iturralde's experiments in fusing jazz with flamenco. During these years, jazz didn't enjoy widespread popularity in Spain: local record labels didn't find the jazz market sufficiently attractive, and resources were largely directed towards the production of Spanish pop. Only this can explain the scarcity of releases during the period, especially when Spain is placed in comparison with countries like Italy or France, which were seemingly a lot more open to sounds originating from the other side of the Atlantic. This is even more pronounced if we bring in the United Kingdom, Germany, and certain Scandinavian nations into the equation. Along with Paris, these places became new homes for a great number of musicians who fled the United States in search of new opportunities. Nevertheless, a handful of albums and EPs exist that have remained unjustly ignored for decades, and which are in urgent need of rediscovery. These musicians helped pave the way for jazz in Spain, and are responsible for some of its brightest musical moments. Fetén brings together a selection of recordings made in Spain between 1961 and 1974. The tracks selected were originally released on records that have become impossible to find, and which, in most cases, have never been reissued. These are unique recordings spanning modal jazz, hard-bop and even avant-garde jazz by Spanish musicians such as Mantequilla, Juan Carlos Calderón, Ricard Roda and Vlady Bas, as well as by international jazzmen like Dusko Goykovich, Lou Bennett, and Tino Contreras. The selection is completed by the inclusion of a previously-unissued track -- a cover in a trio format of "Solar," a Miles Davis composition rescued from the master tapes and seeing the light now for the first time after being left out of the original edition of Nits de jazz al Jamboree, released in 1968 by the Edigsa label. Years of searches in market stalls and record fairs, trades with other collectors, phone calls to second-hand dealers, countless hours of online research, and a lot of dusty fingers have made it possible to bring together all the recordings presented here." --Javi Bayo.

While 1967's Velvet Underground & Nico was a part of Andy Warhol's global artistic vision, 1968's White Light/White Heat was free of all Warholian influence, so in a way it could be thought of as another debut album. Here the music was left to fester on its own, with no artistic visionary interfering or trying to create a soundtrack for his pop art, and the Velvets filled that void with an album that is an aural subway car full of drunkards, junkies and whores rumbling through the bowels of NYC with a one way ticket to oblivion. DEGIHEUGI The Broken Symphony 2LP
Double LP version. Reissue, originally released in 2008. For his third LP, Degiheugi, a very productive producer, returns with a magnificent and very well-done cake. True goldsmith's work, The Broken Symphony is a pure jewel. Between rap, trip-hop and electro, Degiheugi is this time accompanied by rapper Ghostown, singer Nawelle and talented hacker L'omelette, already present on his previous opus. Produced under a Creative Commons license and available on the Degiheugi website for legal download, The Broken Symphony is composed of assemblies and sound tinkering of all kinds reminiscent of a certain Wax Tailor, see Morcheeba on the excellent "My Gypsy Nights". But let's stop the quick comparisons there. Listen to the broken symphony once, then listen twice and then it becomes almost obsessive. The inspirations are numerous, coming as much from funk, jazz as from classical music or film scores (Morricone...). You will be overwhelmed by hypnotic atmospheres, oceans of color and very real feelings. Floods of stories that incessantly appeal to the imagination as the musical richness and the quality of the production are taken care of. Very coherent, this "broken symphony" is crossed by the same breath, a melancholy spleen... The colors are dark certainly, but cut in the best velvet: warm and moiré. Dark and bright at the same time. Cover art produced by Degiheugi. Also features Mo-te and Screenatorium.

DEGIHEUGI Abstract Symposium 2LP
Double LP version. Reissue, originally released in 2010. Two years after the excellent The Broken Symphony, the wait is over. Degiheugi's fourth album, Abstract Symposium is an album that stands out from its predecessors. Indeed, if the beatmaker made himself known thanks to an essentially instrumental production, his latest effort goes against his whole approach. You will understand, the album is a vocal disc: a host of guests, for 16 strong character tracks. Don't panic, if you enjoyed the previous albums, it's a safe bet that this disc will delight your eardrums just like in the good old days. Understand by this that, even if the bias to put forward the voice can be risky for the solidity of the production of the sieur, the balance remains preserved. On the program, cuts, breaks, "triturage and assemblage", which made it famous, all cleverly enriched by the vocal performances of the guests. Here the change is intelligent, it operates smoothly and surprises you when you least expect it, while preserving certain immutable bases which give this artist all his interest. Sometimes jazz, then hip-hop, or acoustic folk, Abstract Symposium is the album of diversity... But can it be otherwise with Degiheugi... Features Screenatorium, Nomad, Ghostown, Doctor Noodle, Nolto, Kalyanka, Andrre, Astronautalis, Skap'1, and Mock.
