DITTERICH VON EULER-DONNERSPERG Weisheit aus des Kindes Mund tut uns stets die Wahrheit kund LP
Ditterich von Euler-Donnersperg, also known as Uli Rehberg and most certainty other names, is a mythologized figure in Germany's industrial underground. The man behind Walter Ulbricht Schallfolien, a label responsible for early releases by Throbbing Gristle and SPK and for being the home of the enigmatic Werkbund, it is long believed that Ditterich is part of, or completely behind, Werkbund himself. A Colourful Storm presents another piece of his puzzle.

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE Tepid Peppermint Wonderland Volume 1 2LP
2021 repress. Pressed on 180 gram black vinyl and housed in a gatefold sleeve. Remastered for a vinyl release. This 15-track compilation spans the years 1995-2004, featuring key tracks from all their albums as well as live recordings and many unreleased tracks. The Brian Jonestown Massacre is a psychedelic rock band originally from San Francisco, California, led by guitarist/singer Anton Newcombe. Since 1995 The Brian Jonestown Massacre has released numerous albums, first for Bomp! Records, the label which gave them their start, and later for TVT and Tee Pee. BJM has been essential in the development of the modern U.S. garage scene, and many L.A. and SF musicians got their start playing with Newcombe, including Peter Hayes of The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Originally Newcombe was heavily influenced by The Rolling Stones' psychedelic phase -- the name comes from Stones guitarist Brian Jones combined with a reference to cult leader Jim Jones, but his work in the 2000s has expanded into aesthetic dimensions approximating the UK shoegazing genre of the 1990s, and incorporates influences from world music, especially Middle Eastern and Brazilian music.

ETHIX Bad Trip 7"
Replica reissue of this extremely rare 7" by Fifty Foot Hose band members, originally issued in 1967. "Bad Trip" was recorded with Bob Noto on guitar, Bob Gibson screaming and hollering, and Cork Marcheschi playing bass and hitting a large cardboard tube with a stick. They recorded it on a two-track Sony in Cork's parents' family room and put Bob in the bathroom as a kind of sound booth. It was Cork's way to deal with music concrete and he suggested that the record could be played at any speed, his love for Dadaism was fully realized in "Bad Trip".

HELLVETTE Muziek Voor Harmonium LP
In his essay The Meaning of My Avant-Garde Hillbilly and Blues Music, Henry Flynt talks about how his music should be analyzed as an intellectual tribute to the music of the autochtone, setting aside plain folk references, but adopting academic insights to mold the music one makes as a folk creature. Much of Flynt's discourse applies to the music of Glen Steenkiste's Hellvete. Over the past twenty years he has been thoroughly investigating both the ethnic musical language of various regions as well as the contemporary pioneers that preceded him as a drone musician, internalizing concepts such as deep listening or just intonation. Casting off any redundant ideas or sounds, and stripping down the focus to develop singular concepts, his working method led to pieces such as "Droomharmonium", in which he shapes the endless variations on a theme, emphasizing detail and nuance rather than multitude. The Indian harmonium here serves as the main device to worship ancient ghosts and masters, and to preserve a continuum in a tradition that touches both folk and avant-garde culture. The materializations are sustained tone compositions which become a means of appreciation of the people and cultures that paved the way for forms of mutual escapism. This might well be the core of what Hellvete's music is about. As much as it is a form of self-entertainment -- like folk music in the old days -- it also invites the listener to a shared experience of sonic reverie, it is a casual gift to the community. The pieces here were first presented in a smoke filled and darkened art space in Ghent, Steenkiste surrounded by only a couple of candles and just enough stage light to see him erratically moving to the rhythm of the piece, occasionally twiddling the knobs of a Doepfer synth that processed the prerecorded harmonium tracks. Unlike most of his other performances this piece embraced the audience in a trance that was similar to that of an old-school rave club. Flynt writes: "The music should be intellectually fascinating because the listener can perceive and participate in its rhythmic and melodic intricacies, audacity of organization, etc. At the same time, the music should be kinesthetic, that is, it should encourage dancing." Voor Harmonium does exactly that; it builds on the artistic ideas that have long been established in Hellvete's oeuvre, but the ecstatic nature of these pieces merges the usual spiritual transcendence with one of determined physical bliss. Edition of 250.

CRAZY DOBERMAN Two Tales Of Lost Witness Marks LP
"Tim Gick's already-warped patchwork editing of the entire Crazy Doberman output thus far turns increasingly glitched out across the splattered quiltwork of a nine-track LP on Aguirre. Any coherent sense of time departs early on the A-side; kicked off with the familiar sound of the Dobes' synth throb and love-cry woodwinds on top of completely fried electric guitar squiggling, all suspended in spiritual foam; then battered to bits on the greasy flat top of the record's B-side. Ringing modular synth sirens evoke alarmingly huge Southern watersnakes swimming on top of Oconee river. Total trip zone across two sides: brownouts in the sequence of events, dubby fadeouts, and bright jump cuts in space. Teases of cartoon barrlehouse tickling on the keys of a farmhouse piano and tape melt psychedelia. The recording session in Athens, Georgia was a total 'CHUGFEST' recalls Frank Hurricane, the Appalachian juggalo folkie king, who joined the session with the Lafayette, Indiana crew. The presence of Hurricane's own 'Life is Spiritual' mirth bulworks the record with a muddy, barefoot hippy hopefulness, steadying the log flume through the nocturnal psychic murk toward the holy morning dew." --J. Russ Personnel: Drew Davis, Paul Baldwin, Tim Gick, Michael Potter, Jason Filer, Jacob Sunderlin, John Olson, Frank Hurricane. Edition of 500.

MOTHER FREEDOM BAND Cutting The Chord LP
Be With Records present a reissue of Mother Freedom Band's Cutting The Chord, originally released in 1977. Mother Freedom Band's Cutting The Chord is a funky modern soul classic. It's both a criminally under-appreciated album, a sweet disco-funk groover. Produced by the great Al Goodman from The Moments and originally released in 1977, Cutting The Chord seems to be one of the lesser known releases on the curious, and often great All Platinum label. Other than a 7" of a couple of these tracks, the only thing that the band seem to have released is this album, and what an album it is. Unbeatable soul-funk of the highest quality. The album bursts open with "Love Will Stay In Your Corner", a soulful dancer that reliably slays any funk set. It's followed by the lithe disco funk "Flick Of The Wrist" that's all bubbling baselines and elegant horns. The groovy, horn-enhanced sweet soul of "Gotta Get It Back" is equal parts heartbreaker/hip-shaker and the acidic organs on "Mr Brother" are an experiment in synth soul. Perhaps the group's best-known track, "Beautiful Summer's Day" is pure piano-driven paradise soul. A tropical birdsong intro sets the scene of a warm, perfect sunshine day and the lead vocal soars over the lush, clean production. The brilliantly-named "(Assistants Rag) When You're Hot, You're Hot" opens side two. Another huge highlight, it's a laid-back, power-funk workout that sounds incredibly modern, like something off the last D'Angelo record. The horn-heavy, clav-stabbing-stomper "We Like To Boogie" keeps things fast and funky before the airy, heavenly harmony soul of "Come On Home" mellows us all out. Things pick up again with "Touch Me", and you might recognize its addictive elements sampled in Jay-Z's Kanye West-produced "A Star Was Born". The magical, reggae-tinged, gospel-influenced "Sweet Love" closes out this assured, classy set. It can be said that Cutting The Chord is a rare example of a funk-soul LP which is killer from start-to-finish. Sure, there are the stand-out bombs, but the whole thing is a complete and varied album of feel-good vibes held together by its fluid horns, tight, tight rhythm section and beautiful vocals. Mastered for vinyl from the original analog tapes by Simon Francis, cut by Pete Norman and artwork restored at Be With HQ.

LEIDER A Fog Like Liars Loving LP
"Led by composer Rishin Singh, this sublime ensemble fits neatly into the complex of Berlin musicians devoted to alternate tunings. Blending exquisite, enveloping long tones, the measured singing of Annie Gårlid and Stine Sterne, and stately, slowly unfolding melodies, Leider is an art-song combo that finds the commonalities in John Dowland, the Velvet Underground, and La Monte Young." --Peter MargasakLeider is an ensemble that plays songs by Rishin Singh and hails from the city of Berlin. A Fog Like Liars Loving, their debut album, is fragile and delicate music that reflects the darker side of urban living -- themes of addiction, alienation, casual cruelty, and paranoia are present throughout -- while maintaining an understated gallows humor. Though difficult to categorize, they can reference the textures of musique concrète or the structures of Wandelweiser. They can also devolve into cascades of no-wave inspired noise and are almost always just at the edge of falling apart. These eight songs extend a patient hand to the listener, playing with chance and human idiosyncrasy: exposed instrumental playing where the hairs scraping across strings and the air required to produce a note are as important as the notes themselves. Hardly ever truly in tune or in time with one another, yet fully in conversation. Hardly a note that isn't broken or damaged in some way, both antidote and mirror to the disintegration of sedentary life. A Fog Like Liars Loving is an album that takes its time and trusts its audience to do the same, a Cagean unspooling of our "great expectations" that will keep you coming back for more, humming along all the while. Simultaneously unnerving and pleasantly tranquilizing, a path without a path, clear in concept yet deeply sensual, A Fog Like Liars Loving exists in a world of its own. RIYL: Olivier Messiaen, Eva-Maria Houben, John Cale, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Jürg Frey, Morton Feldman, Alexander Scriabin, Nico (minus the racism), Richard Strauss, Scott Walker, Low, Carlo Gesualdo, Hariprasad Chaurasia, Yo La Tengo. Recorded in Summer 2018 at studioboerne45, Berlin. Recorded and mixed by Adam Asnan. Mastered by Rafael Anton Irisarri at Black Knoll Studio, New York. Design and photography by Anna Bernhardt.

BRUBECK QUARTET, THE DAVE Time OutTakes LP
Restocked. "'Time OutTakes features seven tracks that have never been heard before. These newly discovered recordings feature wonderful performances that are every bit as compelling as those on the original Time Out. We discovered that during the original 1959 sessions the Quartet also recorded 'I'm In a Dancing Mood' and an unlisted trio jam with a major drum solo that included snatches of the melody from 'Watusi Drums.' Two tracks from Time Out, 'Pick Up Sticks' and 'Everybody's Jumpin,' were achieved in one take so no alternates exist to include here. These seven new performances (and bonus track) are fascinating finds.' --Chris Brubeck 'We've all heard Dave Brubeck's Time Out -- but never quite like this. You'll hear Dave Brubeck's signature pieces afresh and anew. Listening to this album will make you rediscover why you fell in love with The Dave Brubeck Quartet featuring Paul Desmond, Joe Morello and Eugene Wright. This is mesmerizing music.' --Kabir Sehgal, Grammy Award Winning Producer 'Once the Dave Brubeck Quartet released Time Out in 1959, the world of jazz was never the same. Every note of the seven original compositions soared with wild originality and trained musical genius. 'Take Five' became the best-selling jazz single of the twentieth century. I've often wondered how this work of genius came to fruition in the studio? How did Brubeck develop such chemistry with alto-saxophonist Paul Desmond? Now the mysteries are solved with the historic release of Time OutTakes (alternative takes to the masterpiece that blew the hinges off the doors of jazz). What a high privilege it is to be able to be in the studio with the quartet as they innovate using 9/8, 5/4 and 2 bars of 3/4 alternating with 2 bars of 4/4 on such classics as 'Blue Rondo a la Turk' and 'Three to Get Ready.' All listeners of Time OutTakes will experience the Cold War era jazz revolution as it unfolded. What joyous music for the ages!" --Douglas Brinkley, CNN historian and Grammy-winning jazz producer

HELDON Electronique Guerilla (Heldon I) LP
2021 restock; LP version. Bureau B present a reissue of Heldon's debut album Electronique Guerilla, originally released on Disjuncta in 1974. In 1973, 22-year old Richard Pinhas was well on his way to becoming a full-time philosopher. He had almost finished his PhD and begun teaching at the University of Paris. But he also had a hobby: writing music and recording it himself. When he submitted a few tracks to British label E.G. (home of King Crimson and Roxy Music), the imprint was interested, but Pinhas was frustrated to find out he'd have to wait a year for them to release anything. So Pinhas put out his first album on his own label, Disjuncta. He called the project Heldon (from a location in Norman Spinrad's 1972 sci-fi novel The Iron Dream). It might have been the first self-released rock record in France. "Or at least the first one that worked," says Pinhas. "It was like a musical and political event in France. Musical because there were few artists using synthesizers here, or even in the world. And political because we tried to say that the big companies make everything bad and their records are too expensive." Most of Electronique Guerilla was made by Pinhas alone, but "Ouais, Marchais, Mieux Qu'en 68" featured five collaborators, including one of his mentors, Gilles Deleuze. Over winding guitars and pointed percussion, the French philosopher reads lyrics taken from Friedrich Nietzsche's "The Voyager and His Shadow" (1880). Despite being self-released -- with Pinhas himself delivering some stock directly to record stores -- Electronique Guerilla quickly sold over 19,000 copies. That convinced Pinhas he should make and release more music by himself -- but he would have little time for philosophy. "I had to make a decision, because at that point in France, you couldn't do two jobs," he remembers. "So I made this very bad choice to be a rock 'n' roll musician." It's a choice he's stuck to for four decades, and the fiery Electronique Guerilla provided a potent spark. 2018 remaster by Willem Makkee.

BANABILA, MICHEL Wah-Wah Whispers LP
LP version. "Ever since he released his music in the early '80s (1983, to be exact), Michel Banabila has been hard to pinpoint to a specific genre or style. His musical output includes jazz, experimental cut-up electronics, world music (especially influenced by the fourth world music as developed by Jon Hassell), new age, eclectic pop tunes, music for dance or other stage projects, and soundtracks for TV productions. Some listeners may have found it somewhat difficult throughout the years to find their way in this versatile output that includes very different genres. Because of this versatility Banabila has grown into one of the most fascinating musicians in Europe and was always highly acclaimed by critics, which was well deserved. Nevertheless -- for possibly that very same reason his work never came across the radar of most people, and that is something he does not deserve. When diving deeper into his output, one gets familiar with the trademark Banabila sound: his personal ways of using samples, the way he incorporates vocal fragments, the fact that there is always an emotional layer you can relate to, even in his most abstract works. Over the years, Banabila's work has progressed and evolved in different directions. It must be weird for any creative artist when the interest of new audiences (and labels) focuses on your earlier work - work that you have long left behind while exploring new directions. On the other hand: Whoever gets interested in your older work may also want to explore the newer stuff (which means they have almost forty years to explore, just imagine!). For this particular release, Bureau B chose a different approach. Instead of archiving early works from the 1980s, Wah-Wah Whispers focuses on Banabila's more recent output. It is a collection of works showcasing many facets of his music: a journey visiting the minimal and cinematic sample scape in the opener Take Me There, a robotic reggae-like rhythm ('Tic Tac'), contemplative ambient/fourth world scenes evolving into a downright funky beat ('Hidden Story'), the synth version of 'Secunde', and more. The album ends with a kaleidoscope of atmospheres gradually building up to a noise climax in 'Narita' (the only collaboration track on the album, with Rutger Zuydervelt/Machinefabriek). No single compilation album could really do justice to the massive scope of Banabila's output since 1983, but with Wah-Wah Whispers, Bureau B did a wonderful job to facilitate a view into his more recent work (2013- 2020, with the exception of 'Tic Tac', which is from 2001)." --Peter van Cooten

CLAFRICA Never Not Balling 12"
Sicilian-born, UK-based DJ and producer Clafrica has been heavily influenced by the dub and reggae sounds from a very early age and the geographical proximity to Africa allowed him to soak in the various cultures that exists in Sicily -- molding him into the musician that he is today. Fast forward, he makes his Darker Than Wax debut with Never Not Balling -- a dazzling sonic exploration of nostalgia, vintage circuits, and basketball. Owing his first musical exposure to the Space Jam soundtrack and '90s basketball video games, as well as his first time seeing a DJ courtside at the And1 Mixtape European tour, Clafrica's love of both music and basketball have always gone hand in hand. After honing his craft as a DJ and studio engineer from as early as 12 years old, and moving from Sicily to Edinburgh in 2010 to further his studies of sound design, Clafrica has emerged as a certified production mad scientist and studio boffin in his own right. Fast forward to 2019, Clafrica emerged as one of the most exciting new producers on the scene with a string of releases on labels such as Axe On Wax, Vakum, Deep&Roll, and Perpetua. A collection of tracks created over the last two years, Never Not Balling is one of Clafrica's most well-rounded offerings to date, expressing a number of moods and emotions through his signature style, all the while showcasing the artist's mastery of studio techniques and hardware. In the theme of fusing his love of sport and music, "Skip Thru Dat Lane" is a mid-lockdown electro reflection on overcoming difficult times, with the artist envisioning himself dodging negativity like Allen Iverson skipping through the lane. On the heavier side, "U Can't Guard Me" is a pure release of stress and frustration, driven by unstoppable hi-hats and a punishing bassline. "Halftime" fuses the sound of old Amiga sound chips with raw drum machines as an ode to the basketball video games of Clafrica's youth. At every point in the record, Clafrica's sonic depth and stylish approach is on display, driven by raw and unrelenting dance music energy.

TIPPEL, ANDREA Peculiar Songs 7"
Andrea Tippel was born in 1945 in Hirsau in the Black Forest and grew up as the middle of three sisters in Bremen. Her parents were the architects Maria Alexandra Mahlberg and Klaus Tippel. In 1971, Tippel moved to Berlin and began creating drawings, objects, composites, texts and books, as well as a few oil paintings. Tippel was appointed as a professor at the Hochschule fu?r Bildende Ku?nste Hamburg in 1997 and co-founded the Dieter Roth Academy (DRA) in 2000. She passed away in 2012 in Berlin. From the early 1990s onwards, Andrea Tippel frequently recorded audio works including readings, songs and field recordings. Her literary centerpiece undoubtedly is Ich Und Sie, a novel composed entirely of three-letter words (TA 160CD). This 7" single collects three improvised songs, originally titled seltsame Lieder/improvisiert, recorded to cassette tape presumably in the mid-to-late 1990s. All three tracks are playful and funny, but at the same time they unfold three philosophical topics, typical of Tippel's dry humor: The first song, "hotduiknow", is a sprechgesang loop of the epistemological question "How do I know?", without a final universal answer: How do we know that we know what we know? "Herr Kurzweil + Herr Frommherz" is based on a children's song well-known throughout Germany: "Der Kuckuck und der Esel" (The Cuckoo and the Donkey). Its lyrics, describing a quarrel between a cuckoo and a donkey about who of the both was the better singer, are by Hoffmann von Fallersleben, who also wrote the text of the German national anthem. Tippel transformed the two 19th-century animals into two 20th-century futurists, asking who has the better vision of the future: Ray Kurzweil, scientist, book author, and now a director of engineering at Google, or Fridolin Frommherz, a fictional German scientist from the novel Vom Mars zur Erde (1914) by utopian Albert Daiber. Frommherz, living in the year 2222, decides to stay on Mars as the only member of an expedition group, deeply impressed by a higher civilization found on the red planet. The last song, "when i die please do what you want (Testament)", brings up another philosophical question: Who decides over my body when my mind is absent? and is it still my body? But the song turns the Descartes body/mind question into a kitsch chanson, a stereotypical imitation of a "foreign", sexually attractive woman, unfortunately with a dead body. Reproductions of drawings by Andrea Tippel on the sleeve and on the labels; includes postcard; Edition of 200.

CURRAN, BRIANNE Canyonleigh 7"
Brianne Curran is an improvising violinist from Sydney (Guringai Country, Australia), and is currently based in Berlin. She was leader of the world/jazz quintet Takadimi and has worked in groups such as the Splinter Orchestra and the Krakow Improvisers Orchestra, as well as in numerous projects with saxophonist/clarinetist Luc Houtkamp. Of major interest in her approach to music making is the relationship between artist, environment, and audience. Between 2004 and 2007, while living in Canberra, she regularly visited a place called Canyonleigh in Gundungurra Country, staying out in the bush, often in isolation, exploring ways to express and connect with the surrounding landscape and space through music. On the last day before moving to Berlin in 2015, she decided to visit Canyonleigh one last time, hung a recorder in a Eucalyptus tree, and made these recordings. BEHRENDSEN, PETER 10 x 15 = 30 LP
Peter Behrendsen (b. 1943) is a Cologne-based radio producer, performer, and composer of experimental music. He started concerning himself with electro-acoustic music in 1972, was a member of Josef Anton Riedl's ensemble and assistant to Klaus Schöning at the WDR radio play studio (Studio for Acoustic Art). He organized numerous concerts and festivals for experimental music in Cologne, most notably BrückenMusik, a series of concerts in the box girder of the Deutz bridge. After Nachtflug / Atem des Windes in 2017 (ET 628-05LP), this is his second LP on Edition Telemark. 10 x 15 = 30 is the vinyl mix of a concert for Behrendsen's 75th birthday at the LOFT in Cologne. The full-length recording has been released on CD by Obst Music with the title Fünf Mal Dreißig Ist Sechzig (5 x 30 = 60). The players were: Peter Behrendsen (electronics), Dietmar Bonnen (prepared piano, glockenspiel), Andreas Oskar Hirsch (carbophone), hans w. koch (axoloti, blippoo box), and Lucia Mense (recorders). What Behrendsen had in mind for the concert was not a program of solo pieces but a collective improvisation with musicians and visual artists. Being skeptical about conventional "free" (psychodynamic) improvisation, he decided to go with an approach that John Cage called "with the head in the sky -- and the feet on the ground": between individual freedom and preconceived rules. The total length of the concert was set to 60 minutes, each player had 30 minutes in sections between two and ten minutes. Their length and distribution was decided by chance. Within their sections, players had individual freedom: Musical communication was not mandatory but possible, emerging musical relationships would often be unintentional. Simultaneously, five videos by visual artists were projected in random order, again without any intended correlation between sound and video. For the LP, the concert recording had to be adapted in length, i.e. reduced to two parts of about 15 minutes each. To maintain the character of a whole, the 60-minute concert was cut into two equal parts, mixed down and cut into two halves for both sides. The result is a new piece: denser but still transparent, the relationships between the musicians even more abstract -- a new composition. Regular version comes in glossy sleeve with artwork by Dietmar Bonnen; edition of 240.

MORIMOTO/YAN JUN, SEIJI Ring + Balance / Solo With Background LP
The Festival Experimentelle Musik is a music festival in Munich, organized by Stephan Wunderlich and Edith Rom, that has been held annually in December since 1983. One of the festival's unique characteristics is the way the performances are organized: Each is limited to 20 to 25 minutes and all take place in direct succession without pauses, on previously set-up small stages. In 2017, Seiji Morimoto and Yan Jun performed after each other. Seiji's piece was called "Ring + Balance", he used small speakers, microphones and amplifiers on a table to create feedback rings that were eventually distorted by alarm clocks. Yan performed "Solo With Background" in which he sat on a chair making vocal and body gestures and had two audience members announce the elapsed time every three or five minutes, respectively, according to their own inner clocks. As a spectator, Edition Telemark felt that the two performances had something in common. Their very quiet and experimental nature -- in the sense that it was impossible to anticipate what would happen and when, if at all -- made the audience listen not only to the sounds but also to the situation that had been evoked. When the label met Seiji a few weeks later in Berlin, it turned out that he had a similar feeling. Edition Telemark asked Yan and the idea was born to make a split LP of both recordings. The performances were recorded by Albert Dambeck and carefully mastered for vinyl by Werner Dafeldecker. Audience noises are an intended part of the recordings. Seiji Morimoto (b. 1971) is a Japanese sound artist and performer living in Berlin. He is interested in uncertain acoustic appearances between usual objects. Yan Jun (b. 1973) is a Chinese musician and poet based in Beijing. He works with field recordings, electronics, voice, body movement etc.: sometimes funny --always simple. Edition of 300.

JOHANSSON, SVEN-AKE Night Music (First Recordings) LP+2CD
Night Music unearthes Sven-Åke Johansson's very first recordings from 1964 -- made with his Tandberg tape recorder in the Kronenburg Bar, a dive bar in the red-light district in Münster/Westfalen (West Germany). There he performed jazz versions of popular songs and standards with Uwe Wegner (piano) and Gerold Flasse (double bass), sometimes joined by Dutch singer Jenny Gordee. Young Udo Lindenberg was a frequent guest at the Kronenburg Bar. Side A of the LP features seven songs from the Kronenburg Bar. Selected in addition, on side B and two CDs, are a later jazz quartet and a quintet: "I Hear Music -- Mighty Fine Music", recorded 2001 in the b-flat club in Berlin with Axel Dörner, Henrik Walsdorff, Felix Wagner, Stephan Bleier, and Johansson. Finally, "In the Heat of the Night" from 2012 with the Coolquartet (Dörner, Zoran Terzi?, Jan Roder, Johansson), from the club Naherholung Sternchen in Berlin. Full-color sleeve with artwork by Karl Horst Hödicke on the front and labels, and eight-sided booklet; edition of 300."The performances at the Kronenburg Bar were inspired by a belief in the absolute healing message of jazz (even in a red-light bar). During the pauses, a Hungarian Jew performed alone; she sang the Israeli folksong 'Hava Nagila' in this red-light milieu, very disconcerting in post-war Germany circa 1964." --Sven-Åke Johansson

BARBIERI, CATERINA Ecstatic Computation LP
20201repressing. Caterina Barbieri is an Italian composer who explores themes related to machine intelligence and object-oriented perception in sound through a focus on minimalism. Following 2017's acclaimed double-LP Patterns Of Consciousness (IMPREC 449LP), Ecstatic Computation is the new full-length LP by Caterina Barbieri. The album revolves around the creative use of complex sequencing techniques and pattern-based operations to explore the artefacts of human perception and memory processes by ultimately inducing a sense of ecstasy and contemplation. Computation is turned from being a formal, automatic writing technique into a creative, psychedelic practice to generate temporal hallucinations. A state of trance and wonder where the perception of time is distorted and challenged. Equally nervous and ecstatic, the fast permutation of patterns can create a state where time stands still whilst simultaneously being in motion. Is this propulsive music moving forward or backward? As long as the perception of the present is constantly enhanced and refreshed in an endless sense of loss, re-discovery and the search for self-orientation this question lies mute aside the thrilling and perplexing moment of the matter at hand. Vocals on "Arrows Of Time" performed by Annie Gårlid and Evelyn Saylor; recorded by Stefano Tucci at Failsafe Studio. Artwork by Ruben Spini. Mastered by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering.

PAPIR Stundum 2LP
2021 repress. Ten-year anniversary edition on crisp 2021 remastered 2LP! Edition of 500. Papir's second album, Stundum, is perhaps the purest distillation of their sound. At this point the three-piece had slowly been evolving their style, playing drawn-out, semi-improvised live sets for over a year. When they went to record Stundum with Causa Sui's Jonas Munk handling production duties, there was a plethora of accumulated ideas ready to burst. An album that not only would come to define the band, but also one of the early releases on El Paraiso Records that would go on to characterize the direction of the label. Stylistically, Papir cover a lot of ground: they fuse intense psychedelica with post-rock, krautrock, jazz and just a sprinkle of ambient. Based around Christoffer Brøchmann Christensen's powerful and complex drumming, they create instrumental journeys -- organic structures of sound that move forward with the hypnotic groove of Can or electric Miles Davis, through euphoric peaks, thunderous riffs and beautiful cosmic dronescapes. Nicklas Sørensen's guitar playing displays his admiration for the psychedelic explorers from the 1960s and 1970s, but also has a highly melodic aspect that reveals his appreciation for cosmic German heroes Michael Rother and Manuel Göttsching. Christian Becher Clausen's bass playing covers a wide palette of sounds -- sometimes using the instrument as a solid groove-maker and other times as a tool for creating spacy soundscapes and drones. As a unit the three members achieve what the great power trios of the 1960s did at their most fertile: the ability to combine each facet of the band into a whole that surpasses the sum of its parts. There's still something very refreshing about Papir's genre-transcending psychedelia, and Stundum is without a doubt one of their finest records. The album was recorded with Jonas Munk during an intensive week-long stretch in a small secluded house on Zealand (Denmark's biggest island) during a rare blizzard, with Munk producing the album with a full-bodied and natural sound. An essential El Paraiso release.

MYTHIC SUNSHIP Land Between Rivers LP
2021 repress, purple vinyl. LP version. On their second album on El Paraiso Records, Copenhagen quartet Mythic Sunship drive even thicker grooves into their niche of extended cave-man fuzz voyages. Mythic Sunship cut a sharp edge into their ten-plus minute sagas, often churning out tracks with seemingly endless amounts of energy. It's all here: wild bursts of fuzzy and echo-perplexed guitars, thick Geezery basslines, and a galloping myriad of drums. What Mythic Sunship deliver in raw, untamed energy, is kept in place by their deeply grounded tone. Land Between Rivers was captured in a wooden cabin in the north of Sealand, Denmark, where the band secluded themselves, making their release as akin to earthy doom as to sprawled-out krautrock - the Götterdämmerung of Scandinavian heavy psych. Causa Sui's Jonas Munk took on mixing duties, amplifying the earth tone and adding his sense of space and depth to the recording.

GELB & A BAND OF GYPSIES, HOWE Alegrias LP
Ten years have passed since the release of this album and it has not lost its validity. Alegrías by Howe Gelb & A Band of Gypsies doesn't sound like anything you've heard before. While maintaining the Arizona desert flavor that Howe was working with over the years, his sound takes on new nuances as it merges with flamenco beats. On this album, Howe explores unknown territories halfway between American roots, southern and border rock, and the purest flamenco. As Howe said in many times while he was living in the desert, the only three tapes he listened to in his car were: Tom Waits, Miles Davis, and Tomatito. Many years later, an unexpected combination of chance and destiny transported him to the south of Spain, specifically to Córdoba. There, in the newly opened Eureka studios, he found the perfect atmosphere to launch his new project with a friend, Fernando Vacas. The echoes of Tomatito and the passion that Córdoba inspired in Howe Gelb are forces behind the album. Covered by musicians from Córdoba, among Raimundo Amador's regular collaborators such as Lin Cortés (flamenco guitar), Juan Panki (flamenco guitar), or Añil Fernández (cajon) and his classic double bass of Torgue Lund, the album began to take shape in the endless rehearsals. Gelb's voice instantly seduced the Andalusian musicians and after several meetings, the one from Tucson began to write the first lyrics of the album, inspired by the intensity of the sessions. As a culmination, the appearance of Raimundo Amador, who decided to join the project by contributing his virtuous and inimitable touch from which musicians such as Björk and BB King have already benefited. Proof of this is the ravishing intro to "Cowboy Boots On Cobble Stones", full of groan and feeling where he demonstrates his talent for improvisation. After the album was finished, the leader of Giant Sand suggested the collaboration of his friend John Parish, an English musician and producer, known for his work with PJ Harvey. Fernando Vacas accepted the challenge and traveled to Bristol to mix the songs with Parish. The chemistry continued to flow and the result is an album that preserves the flavor of the two traditions that it fuses, both southern roots from both sides of the Atlantic, while discovering a new and unique way of interpreting them. ASUNA & JAN JELINEK Signals Bulletin LP
2021 restock. Faitiche releases a new collaboration between the Japanese sound artist Asuna and Jan Jelinek: the album Signals Bulletin brings together joint improvisations and compositions made over a period of three years in Berlin, Kyoto, and Kanazawa. Asuna's meandering organ drones merge with Jelinek's pulsating synthesizer and field recording loops to create dense superclusters that span broad harmonic arcs. Includes download code.Jan Jelinek on the album (Berlin, 2018): "Watching the Japanese sound artist Asuna playing the organ, some people might be surprised. Asuna is no virtuoso flying over the keyboard in a rage. Instead, with the calm gestures of an office worker, he cuts strips of adhesive tape to the correct length before sticking them onto the keys of his instrument. In this way, large clusters of keys are held down, creating a dense and sustained range of frequencies, while the sound artist continually prepares further sets of keys or removes tape again. I have rarely seen a more convincing performance concept, with such a power to fascinate. I first met Asuna when we both gave a concert at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, his home city. He performed the organ drones as described above and I immediately knew I wanted to collaborate with him. Six years and five meetings later, we completed Signals Bulletin. The album includes both joint improvisations and compositions, recorded in Berlin, Kanazawa and Kyoto. Whether using prepared organ, Casio keyboards, or mechanical plastic toys, Asuna creates rich textures of sound that barely change over long stretches of time. It is a music without breaks. For a while, I was unsure how my loops made using modular synthesizers and live sampling fitted here -- until I realized the role I had to take in this duet: I would provide the rhythmically pulsating foundation over which his dense continuums could unfold. The result is harmonically drifting superclusters that put us into a meditation-like state. It can perhaps be compared to Automatic Writing -- a mode of creative expression floating somewhere between concentration and distraction . . . It is no coincidence that Asuna owns a collection of Doodle Art -- drawings jotted down during conversations or while talking on the phone . . . The artwork for Signals Bulletin features pictures from the collection, in this case sheets of paper from the pads provided in stationery shops to test out pens..."

"Jonny Kosmo, the Los Angeles (via New England) registered therapist and home recordist is a card-carrying expert in the shape of your desire and the horizon of meanings your dreams catalyze. In his briefcase lives his weapons grade kaleidoscope, a 1972 Mayfair recorder, and a neatly folded pair of pants that fits seamlessly to the shape of your longing. His armchair prescriptions for the zeitgeist hover ever present on his most recent LP Pastry which hits you Like 69 cc of heady nostalgia for a time he never lived in. The album is like if David Lynch's Dr Jacobi and Stevie Wonder teamed up to make a new brand of funky golden shovels to 'dig yourself out of the shit' with (So of course Kosmo has an affection for feeding tubes own brand of immaculately silent shudders). But don't mistake Kosmos penchant for the gooey gone past as a hauntological hypnagogia or any other mishmash of intellectual twaddle. Kosmo isn't Mark Fisher, because he is what Fisher could never be... alive and well, thriving amidst the world of fear, confusion, and pain -- yet another well cloned representative of the hidden love that lives at the bottom of the stories we tell ourselves. Kosmo achieves this effect through his buoyant optimism that benevolently anthropomorphized the street art and billboard thematic which now populate the hipper regions of Los Angeles. His songs break that unholy ground and become (yet again) the seed for the building of the next world. Here for your consideration, is a new bedtime story sung in the daylight and danced in the moonlight. A siren song for today's hipsters to pool together their silver spoons, use their illusions, and become tomorrow's lovers. If he lands this trick, it's undeniable that in the future the word Kosmo will become ubiquitous with the way a googly eye can make a face out of any old thing. Sure, the uninitiated will think they are getting an innocent confection, but it's really laced with love potion number 10. KOHOUTEK Jurad LP
"While they have released a decent number of cassettes & CDs, Jurad is only the fourth vinyl album released by this long-running DC-to-Philly-based space-juggernaut. Recorded by a quartet iteration of the always mutating ensemble, the music on this one veers between the kind of psych-prog wallow for which Kohoutek is most often celebrated, and the less formally rockoid improvisational proclivities they sometimes display. The session for Jurad went down at Philadelphia's Sex Dungeon studio in 2012 and resulted in three long tracks. The shortest one, 'Cosmic Grease,' opens the B side in classic Kohoutek style. John Stanton's guitar balances on the cusp of scum and space, spewing fat raw gobs of string-urk across a thick steady surge of circular bass/drum/synth hunch. A pretty nice way to fire it up. 'Double Star' follows with electro-squigglage sluiced amidst much more delicate guitar filigree, a lighter rhythm section pulse and drones of presumed synthetic origin. It has a bit of Germanic feel, along the lines of UA-era Popol Vuh or something. Like taking a deep breath of night air during an electrical storm. The first side is comprised of 'Tidal Disruption,' a rather different kettle of sonic chub. From the first notes of synth buck and string buzz, this one slides sideways with reckless abandon, before diving into a pool of tranquil long tone improvisation, with what sounds like small tractors demolishing a farm house in the distance. As the piece progresses, this far-off destruction resolves itself into a slow drum pulse, fluid bass lines and a wash of synth abstraction. The pace slowly increases and then slows again as 'Tidal Disruption' slowly fades into dream time, wrapping up like a beautiful trip, well taken. Very sweet smoke, we're sure you'll agree." --Byron Coley, 2021

Recorded in 2004-2005 at Rockhouse Studios in Borlänge, these six tracks were used as pre-production demos for what would later become the fourth Dozer album, 2005's Through The Eyes Of Heathens. Includes a bonus track, a cover of the Sunride song, "Vinegar Fly". Vultures is a real heavy-stoner explosion, something that only Dozer can provide. The amazing artwork is made by Lowrider leader, Peder Bergstrand. First vinyl release.

DOZER Through The Eyes Of Heathens LP
Heavy Psych Sounds reissue Dozer's Through The Eyes Of Heathens, originally released in 2005. "From the very start of 'Drawing Dead' through the memorable lead line in the slower-paced closer 'Big Sky Theory,' Dozer assembled a work of impeccable songwriting and deep-rooted character. In the arc of their career, every record was another step forward, and just as 2001's Madre de Dios built on the debut and 2003's Call It Conspiracy built on that, so too did Through The Eyes Of Heathens pick up from where its predecessor left off. Its sound was still rooted in a heavy rock feel, but Dozer were able to translate that into something more aggressive when they wanted -- their sound had bite as well as lumber, and while a cut like 'Born A Legend' could be traced back to their desert-minded beginnings in its basic structure, by the time it was finally executed, it was something else entirely." --The Obelisk.

KOMATSU Rose Of Jericho CD
Komatsu's powers of mass construction resurrected a rare desert flower in their fourth album Rose Of Jericho. Light meets heavy and desolation meets beauty in the nine powerful songs that make up this album. Rose Of Jericho combines a lyrical depth that resonates the current (political) rabbit holes with dark, groovy, warm riffs supporting rugged vocals. The sound of the album is a real mixture between stoner and metal, but with melodic and choral vocal lines. Change of tempo and rhythm, make the listener glue to the speakers until the last note of the album. Komatsu is Mo Truijens (vocals/guitar), Mathijs Bodt (guitar), Martijn Mansvelders (bass), and Jos Roosen (drums). Rose Of Jericho was recorded and mixed at Studio Iglesias, Eindhoven by Peter van Elderen (Peter Pan Speedrock) and mastered by Pieter Kloos at the Void Studio, Eindhoven. VA Sprigs Of Time: 78s From The EMI Archive 2LP
2021 restock. Originally released in 2008. This is the third in Honest Jon's series of albums exploring the earliest 78s held in the EMI Hayes Archive. Honest Jon's spent two years delving through more than 150,000 78 records in the temperature-controlled steel vaults of EMI's Archive in Hayes, Middlesex. An eccentric survey of the Hayes shelves, Sprigs Of Time is a thirty track compilation featuring material recorded between 1903 and 1957, everywhere from England (Percy Grainger's recording of the title song, sung by Joseph Taylor in 1908) to Japan (the bewilderingly beautiful "Seigaiha", by the Japanese Imperial Palace Band, five years earlier). Organ rolls from Georgia run alongside Tamils impersonating motorized transport, and rumba from Beirut; '40s fado sits next to the songs of Bengali beggars. As with the other Hayes releases, all tracks have been restored at Abbey Road and are beautifully presented here with extensive contemporary photographs. There are recognizable names (Joseph Taylor, the incomparable Fairuz, Mighty Sparrow and an uncredited Rubén González, singing lead vocals on "Rumba Negra") and extraordinary oddities (Vengopal Chari's rather unfunny "Laughing" and the peculiarly affecting hand bells of "Gas All Clear"). Taken out of the library and put back on the turntable, every track here is remarkable; every one worth the saving. Also features: G.U. Hsu, Gamelan Gong, Rizeli Kemenceci Sadik, Ochieng Wa Odinga, Sacasas, Jean Mpia, Jonuzi Me Shoket, Fernando Vilches & Ramon Montoya, Cliff Edwards, Benodini Dassi, Imperial Palace Band, Mr. Ero, Fatma Ben Meddah, Noubar Bey & Party, Ben Simmons, Cantonese Opera, Sam Mayo, Fernando Farinha, Gopal Chunder Singh Roy, Fatma El Chameya Sudaneya, Surat Band (Mr. Razak's), Si Said Ben Ahmed, Malijo & Party, Sexteto Habanero, and A.R.P.. Comes in a deluxe gatefold sleeve with two booklets of photos and notes.

VA Bellyachers, Listen: Songs From East Africa, 1938-46 2LP
2021 restock. This is part 1 of a 2LP set of vinyl versions of Honest Jon's Something Is Wrong: Vintage Recordings From East Africa CD compilation -- selections from an HMV run of more than 400 78s -- recordings made in Uganda and Kenya from the mid?1930s to the mid?1950s. Part 1 encompasses this material circa 1938-1946, entitled Bellyachers, Listen: Songs From East Africa, 1938-46. Three main types of performance are featured (not forgetting a lovely early Kenyan big?band calypso, as if straight from the pen of Lord Kitchener). Most are minstrelsy, with songs ranging dazzlingly through subjects including loneliness and death, bastards and cut?off trousers, trains of fire and no?good rich people, a murder mystery and a drunken punch?up at a rumba party in Kampala, and metaphorical cocks, hard pedalling and kettles which won't boil. Other minstrels accompany themselves on various sorts of lyre, and guitars carrying the influences of U.S. country music and Congolese 78s, the influx of Congolese musicians, and the harmonies of Christian church music. There are also tough, raw contributions on button?accordion and taarab music from the Swahili?speaking communities of the east coast, and Arab and Indian communities in ports like Mombasa, which had imported Egyptian and Indian music since almost the start of the century. Lilting melodies are provided by violins or Indian harmoniums, sometimes also an oud, along with Indian or Arab percussion. Luxuriously presented, in a gatefold sleeve, with full notes, including extensive translation and haunting photographs. Recordings brilliantly restored at Abbey Road.

MERZBOW/PRURIENT Black Crows Cyborg LP
The skylines of Tokyo and New York City are impenetrable. On the streets it is cold -- the ravens have blocked out the sun. The barbed chicken wire that surrounds the cities wave scraps of plastic shreds of circuit boards like surrender flags. Ravens have become the society, they are now the rulers. Black Crows Cyborg is the first collaboration from noise titans Merzbow and Prurient. With more than seven hundred releases between them, this LP finds new ways to traverse the empty cities and navigate the cylinders. These two side-length tracks of cryptic dissonance are underscored by the slightest hint of deconstructed computer synthesis and cyborg vocals. Ravens remember actions from specific humans, and can warn them of impending danger -- or choose not to. As the conspiracy of crows overwhelms mankind's encampment and integrates with the industrial leftovers, Black Crows Cyborg is the soundtrack for the overwhelming embrace under dark mechanical wings. Deluxe embossed cover with mini poster.

ELLIOTT, MATT Farewell To All We Know CD
Despite, or rather thanks to, his cynical despair, Matt Elliott's music never holds up a moralizing mirror to us -- on the contrary, it creates a compassionate dialogue with listeners like the rhythm of two steps that synchronize to become as one. On Farewell To All We Know, Matt began working with the producer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist David Chalmin (La Terre Invisible) who has continued collaborating with the Bristol-born singer. Farewell To All We Know is an instant classic based on the sensitive piano and superb arrangements of David Chalmin, the sensitive cello of Gaspar Claus, the subtle bass of Jeff Hallam (who has also played with Dominique A and John Parish). There is a clear form of alchemy in all of this and still we find Matt Elliott's usual atmospheres and scenery, the same Eastern European folk music, long songs that take time to settle over time. "What Once Was Hope" seems torn between the fear of what tomorrow may bring, inevitability and hope for the future in a permanent and progressive dramatic tension. There are touches of Leonard Cohen from Songs From A Room (1969) or Thanks For The Dance (2019) in The Day After That with Gaspar Claus's counterpoint cello. The haunted instrumental "Guidance Is Internal" harks back to the atmospheres of Howling Songs (2008) with its guitar parts full of scansions and muted threats. The music is transcendental but never seems afraid of the risk of falling. This is also what "Bye Now" tells you with its quasi-obsolete simplicity and sunburst melancholy reminiscent of the work of Luiz Bonfá, Bill Evans, on "Peace Piece" or laidback crooners of the '50s. In Farewell To All We Know, Matt Elliott incessantly alternates between the dual desires to face up to the world or to protect himself from it. "Hating The Player, Hating The Game" is a lucid statement about the dullness of our daily lives sometimes, our right to get out of the game and no longer want to be part of it. "Aboulia" speaks of the tiredness of living and of looming death while "Crisis Apparition" says that there is always a time for reconstruction after chaos. This is like initially wearying wandering in the ruins of Aleppo with the slow dilution of the melody into a hallucinated drone. However, the smell of great fires always fades and the earth always regenerates.

CHAPELIER FOU Meridiens LP
LP version. Includes download. An overall map... Ici D'Ailleurs used to enjoy presenting Chapelier Fou's work using the idea of music in the form of a treasure hunt. However, while the phrase in itself it still just as relevant today, the label would never have imagined that it would become such an integral part of one of his albums. Or two of his albums to be perfectly exact -- Méridiens and Parallèles (IDA 145CD/LP). Two records with twelve songs each which answer each other back in the form of anagrams. The starting point is a sombre night in Uqbar... Chapelier Fou's opening reference to Borgès was obviously not made by chance. He subsequently confides in the listener the objective of his diptych, namely to combine reality with fiction to question certainties and our relationships with the imaginary sphere, using his traditional classical-contemporary electronic approach. Throughout Méridiens, each composition can be seen as a universe in itself or a specific landscape with its own temporality. Proof of this is the introduction to the chamber music format composed for and performed by only strings which can only be given the date we want to give it. This is "État Nain" in which violins are played like guitars. In some parts you find the spirit of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra and the idea of cheering up classical instruments and not taking everything too seriously. In other parts, you find something close to a mischievous and childish unplugged grunge anthem that could be from the French series Les Shadoks. This mischievous view of things is shown to full effect in "Am Scharchtensee". The introduction shows Chapelier Fou's whole classical universe and mastery of orchestration in which "modular" electronics provide a subtle and discreet backdrop. Then, the record suddenly switches to a surrealist dialogue between these classical sounds and modular synthesizers with the flavor of the German pioneers Kluster/Harmonia, to provide an example. "La vie de cocagne confirms" this choice of total freedom. It's traditional music with old sounds, a kind of forgotten bourrée (old French dance) in which electronic sounds disturb the established order and thus reach another musical dimension. "Le méridien du Péricarde" followed by "Désert de Sonora" push this idea of a trompe l'oreille and a hall of mirrors even further. The latter track ends almost like a catchy '80s melody and we can no longer find any logical meaning.

GEINS'T NAIT & LAURENT PETITGAND Like This Maybe Or This CD
Five years after the release of Je Vous Dis in 2018 (MTS 001CD/LP), Geins't Naït and L.Petitgand's second album from the Mind Travel series (MTS 005CD/LP) and Make Dogs Sing collection on the German label Offen (OFFEN 009LP), the duo are now writing a new chapter in their story with this fascinating poetic tale. The same mysterious and heady atmosphere which characterizes the two musicians is present in this new work, but clearly, they have never ceased refining and polishing their sounds to give their compositions even more power and depth. Geins't Naït and L.Petitgand here offer twelve new tracks with names as enigmatic as the title Like This Maybe Or This itself and the record's whole universe. In reality, these mysterious names lead you to let yourself be taken to the deep meaning of their creation. The subject matter is certainly difficult to grasp and invites you on an inner journey while leading you to doubt and question ourselves incessantly. There is a perfect alchemy between these two artists though this was far from self-evident as they come from two very different schools. Thierry Merigout, who is now the only representative left from the late '80s experimental project Geins't Naït in Nancy, comes from the post-industrial scene. As for Laurent Petitgand, he is a pure melodist who is best known for his work as a composer of music for films and live shows and has collaborated with Wim Wenders and Paul Auster, in particular. Like This Maybe Or This is a fully accomplished symbiosis between Geinst Nait's industrial and experimental tonalities and the celestial melodies of Laurent Petitgand. "Shape Of The Storie" starts the album with a bewildering atmosphere which mixes a sample of a guttural voice with cavernous resonances thus prefiguring the album's general atmosphere. However, while some tracks like "HAC" you're your existential anguish, other tracks have a poetic and melancholic tonality which touches your deepest humanity. This is the case of "Dustil" whose subtle piano notes combined with the melancholy violin show us a sublimated world. This fascinating blend of violence and gentleness makes this record an atypical work which enables listeners to lose themselves in an emotional nebula where they can perceive the turbulence and also the intensity of inner life. GEINS'T NAIT & LAURENT PETITGAND Like This Maybe Or This LP
LP version. Includes download. SECRET OF ELEMENTS Chronos CD
Chronos is the new album by Rostock's composer Johann Pätzold, aka Secret of Elements. A heartfelt, richly visual journey through which the German composer channels personal struggles alongside the social upheavals to which he has dedicated himself as a "music activist". Chronos charts an eventful period during which Pätzold learned to deal with mental illness, traveled to the Mediterranean to save lives during the refugee crisis, fell in love and lost love -- ten years is a long time. The album tells of people, moments or phases from the musician's life. It opens with the ominous melodies and immersive choral ambience of "Grace", which reflects on a friend's suicide attempt, before riding the euphoria of Pätzold's wedding and the birth of his children in "A Last Waltz". Third track "Memento" narrates the epic journey of a refugee Syrian mother whom Pätzold accompanied from Greece to Germany, its emotive swells and subtle crescendo evoking simultaneously the dawning of a new world and the melancholy of what has been left behind. "Vinculum", built around an Indian mantra, also dates from the same period and was written as a last tribute to a small child who drowned in the Mediterranean. The piece combines church organ -- renown as part of Christian music, and indeed recorded in the Marienkirche in Gnoien on an original 18th century Lütkemüller organ -- with a mantra, seeking to unite various religious symbols in an attempt at reconciliation in the face of unimaginable tragedy. Propelled by mechanical percussion, "Rage" uses the Shepard scale, a musical phenomenon in which two cyclically rising octaves are played on top of each other in a staggered fashion to create the illusion of an infinitely swelling scale, perfectly mirroring the image of blind spiraling, hysterical anger. When you arrive at "Aurora", you feel Pätzold musing about the end of the world, but also the end of the self. What remains when humanity is wiped out by a pandemic or something similar? In Johann Pätzold's case, what remains is, among other things, a monumental album, a musical chronicle of his life: Chronos. Features Mischa Blanos and Laure Brisa.

HOWLIN' WOLF, MUDDY WATERS, & BO DIDDLEY The Super Super Blues Band LP
2021 restock, blue vinyl. "Super Super Blues Band started out merely as Super Blues, a conglomerate of blues pillars Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters and Little Walter. When Little Walter bowed out and was replaced by Howlin' Wolf, they rightfully threw another Super on the name, and went on to release this burning, irreverent and even sometimes hilarious set of drunken, wild-eyed electric blues. Long form jams roll on in a trance as the trio of blues legends flex egos, talking shit to each other, trading off leads and ducking blasts of unexpected wah-wah guitar lines. Songs are peppered with an incredible level of banter between the trio of bandleaders that predicts the call and response sing-talking of early hip hop, laced with random screams in the background that teeter between celebration and danger. That these three ever got into the same room together is a miracle, and that they produced something so intense, energetic and weird is another almost unbelievable feat. The record is special enough as a stand-alone document of this meeting/melting of the minds before you find out the backing band consists of Hubert Sumlin, Otis Spann and freaking Buddy Guy. Lordy. Might have needed one more 'super' in there."

DR. JOHN Gris Gris (Color Vinyl) LP
2021 restock, green vinyl. "1968 debut album from the king of the psychedelic bayou -- the hypnotic, mystical and powerful sound of the swamp coming to life. As he became Dr. John (real name Mac Rebennack), it was his LA session work with musicians like Sonny & Cher, Canned Heat, and Zappa that allowed him to start conjuring up his visions of guitar psych-pop to walk alongside his authentic New Orleans upbringing. While Gris Gris contains moments that make it a type stamped symbol of its era, it might have well been made in outer space. Recorded in its own psychic and stylistic vacuum, the album borrows as heavily from the New Orleans' musical culture in which he grew up as it does the looming continuous pulse of war, heavy drugs, and the end of the free love/hippie movement. The album was taken under the wing of a small percentage of the 'underground' upon its release in 1968 and did not find a true following for years. Limited color vinyl, first reissue for original mono mix."

NINEY THE OBSERVER Channel One Presents: 100 Tons of Dub LP
2021 rerelease. The mighty Channel One Studios, Kingston, Jamaica, has its place set in reggae's history. Its distinctive sound the studio created on opening its doors in 1972 to its closure in the early 1980s made it the producers, singers, and musicians studio of choice during this furtive period. Achieving that vibe and clarity, separated it from the other Kingston establishments. Run by the Hookim Family's four sons, Jo Jo the eldest followed by Paulie, Ernest and Kenneth. Their father originally came from China and married a Chinese Jamaican lady and settled in the St Andrews district before moving to Kingston Town itself. The family business was built on jukeboxes and one-armed bandit machines in and around Kingston. A lucrative venture until the gaming laws changed in 1970, outlawing the gaming machines. It was decided to open a studio to make the music to supply their already established Jukebox enterprise. The four brothers opened Channel One Recording Studios in 1972. Initially, the purpose of the studio was for the brothers use only, but this would soon change. Jo Jo would take over the production duties after the initial hiring of Syd Bucknor a producer who had worked closely with Coxonne Dodd's Studio 1 stable. The first release on the Channel One label would be "Don't Give Up The Fight" by Stranger Cole and Gladstone "Gladdy" Anderson. 1977 saw Jo Jo extending his stays in New York to a semipermanent status, returning mainly to oversee recording sessions and then taking the results back to America for worldwide distribution. His brother Paulie senseless killing in that year also added to Jo Jo's decision to spend more time with his Hit Bound Manufacturing set up in New York. The Channel One studio would be upgraded in 1979 to sixteen tracks and although Jo Jo and Ernest still covered the mixing and engineering duties Kenneth would now supervise sessions. An often untold part of Channel One's history is the involvement of producer, Niney The Observer. The mid to late 1970s were heavy times both musically and politically and Maxfield Avenue was in the heart of this crossfire. Niney's fearlessness seen him over running and in many cases running the all-night sessions with his trusted set of musicians loosely called The Soul Syndicate. Jamaican Recordings have selected a bunch of material from Niney's vaults for this release. Some great unreleased rhythms and some different cuts to some tracks you might already know.

GUSGUS Mexico LP+CD
2021 repress; LP version. Pressed on 180 gram vinyl. Includes a CD copy of the album. An obvious fan favorite, GusGus' last full-length offering Arabian Horse exceeded all expectations and ranks among Kompakt's biggest bestsellers in recent years. Now, the core crew of Birgir Thorarinsson, Daníel Ágúst, Högni Egilsson, and Stephan Stephensen returns with new masterpiece Mexico: a hugely satisfying follow-up to past exploits and another step into the future of anthemic pop music. GusGus are dead set on maintaining the towering might of their songwriting, infusing the new album with the same luster as their earlier work, but presenting the deed with the snappiness and intricate production values needed for contemporary debauchery. From opening anthem "Obnoxiously Sexual," to the Existentialist shuffle of closing ballad "This Is What You Get When You Mess With Love," this album leaves no stone unturned on its journey to sonic bliss, delving ever deeper into its timeless melodies with every subsequent track. It's hard to pinpoint highlights from an album like Mexico, as each of those cuts stands well on its own without sacrificing its role in the ensemble. In a way, that's a good metaphor for GusGus itself, as this project again and again manages to successfully pool the forces from a group of exceptionally gifted individuals. Take "Sustain," "Airwaves" or "God-Application": drawing from influences as diverse as '80s synth pop, UK garage or '90s trance, each of these tracks showcases a unique identity but still interlocks with the overarching aesthetics of the album and its omnipresent penchant for brilliant pop hooks. Frequency-shifting house-stomper "Another Life" and deep string groover "This Is Not the First Time" might come closest to the predecessor's voluptuous textures, engaging in the same kind of floor-friendly agility against the backdrop of monumental synth washes. Interestingly enough, title-track "Mexico" is the only instrumental on the new full-length, fittingly bringing a more linear flair to the proceedings. Sporting the nuanced narration of a coherent artist album as well as the eager excitement of a great track selection, GusGus' latest holds the potential to become a source for many a personal best-of mixtape. All killer, no filler!

LOSCIL Clara CD
"The latest collection by Cascadian resident loscil aka Scott Morgan is a stunning meditation on light, shade, and decay, sourced from a single three-minute composition performed by a 22-piece string orchestra in Budapest. The subsequent recording was lathe-cut on to a 7-inch, then 'scratched and abused to add texture and color,' from which the entirety of Clara was sampled, shape-shifted, and sculpted. Despite their limited palette, the compositions summon a sense of the infinite, swelling and swimming through luminous depths. Certain tracks percolate over narcoleptic metronomes while others slowdive in shimmering shadowplay, sounding at times like some noir music of the spheres. Although Morgan's compositional premise for Clara was quite defined, the resultant work is wonderfully opaque and spatial, equal parts lush and lurking, traced in fine-grained gradients and radiant silences. The album's title comes from the Latin for 'bright': a fitting muse for this masterpiece of celestial electric currents and interstitial ether, where 'shadows are amplified and bright spots dimmed.'"

COIL Astral Disaster Sessions Un/finished Musics Vol. 2 CD
"These rare recordings were recorded as part of the legendary Prescription label subscription-only album series in the late 1990s that resulted in the Astral Disaster album. Halloween 1998: Coil were invited to record at Sun Dial's studios beneath the London Bridge Hop Exchange -- a studio first known as Samurai Studios, originally built and owned by Iron Maiden. The premises in Victorian times had been a debtors prison, with three underground levels -- and the original chains, manacles and wrought iron prison doors. This caught the attention of John Balance, who was very keen to record there. With Gary Ramon's help, Coil developed a number of tracks, some of which resulted in the Astral Disaster album. But there were other tracks recorded during those Halloween sessions, including the recordings on this very limited LP release, Astral Disaster Sessions Un/finished Music Vol. 2. The album includes all previously unissued mixes and alternative versions, and includes 'The Mothership,' which was the first version of a track which was later remade and re-named during the sessions as'The Mothership and the Fatherland.'"

DESTIINO Destiino LP
Back in 2017, Yuksek (Pierre-Alexandre Busson) was invited to take part in a unique experiment: a residence at visual artist Xavier Veilhan's Studio Venezia. The installation, a part of the 57th Venice Biennale, invited musicians to make use of its instruments in order to compose live in front of an audience. The Rheims-born electronic producer came back from his Venetian sojourn with a desire to explore new sonic horizons, to break with conventional creative processes and surrender to spontaneity by recording improvised tracks in one go on his armada of analog machines. Thus was born the Destiino project, a sort of tormented alter ego for Yuksek. One that favors dark atmospheres, textures, and feverish flights of melodic fancy. But what came out of these experimental sessions (taking place both in Venice and Busson's Rheims studio) almost didn't see the light of day. By its own admission, the artist didn't quite know what to make of the unclassifiable tracks, which comprised both pieces that were too moody for dance-music labels and others that were too clubby for more experimental imprints. It was with Lumière Noire, a label that is all about defying classification, that the project found an open ear. Along with label boss Chloé, who shares the same inclination towards shifting away from club formats and telling stories with sound, he came up with an edit that kept these artistic experimentations' raw aspects. The result of these exchanges between the two artists will be a double release: EP Afsila (January 2021) and full length Destiino (March 2021). The former oscillates between electronica and acid-tinged techno ("Afsila", "La Jungle"), while the second tome features a larger sonic palette that will strike a familiar chord with the versatile artist's aficionados. Indeed, the album can be seen as the synthesis of his various musical experiments: from the discoid "Rodouard" to the electro of "C'est pas des oiseaux", the opus also encompasses more experimental, lo-fi excursions like "Tropicante", which calls to mind his recent scores for film, television and theatre. Through invitations to dance and more introspective movements, the album remains melodic and psychedelic, making it a confinement-perfect soundtrack to a living room dancefloor.

DINUCCI, KIKO Rastilho LP + 7"
2021 restock. LP version. Includes 7". On Rastilho, Kiko Dinucci absorbs the lineage of Brazilian guitarists such as Dorival Caymmi, João Gilberto, Baden Powell, Jorge Ben, and Gilberto Gil -- yet filtered through his uniquely "punk" musical vision. His style is raw -- technically, he seems to attack the guitar strings, lyrically he explores Afro-Brazilian culture, slavery, Brazilian revolutionaries, candomblé, and evangelical Christianity. Dinucci is one the most innovative artists in contemporary Brazilian music -- as well as a member of Metá Metá, who combine elements of Brazilian music, candomblé, punk rock, and free jazz, he has worked with Tom Zé, Criolo, and Elza Soares. Kiko: "I've wanted to make an album dedicated to the guitar for a long time. As a child, I treated it as a toy. In my teens, with my guitar patched with pieces of sellotape, I tried to reproduce heavy rock riffs whilst finding inspiration in the Afro works of Baden Powell and guitars of Dorival Caymmi, João Bosco, Jorge Ben and Gilberto Gil. In the '90s my experience in the São Paulo hardcore scene was mirrored by time spent in candomblé activities -- both shaped the way I play guitar today." Features Juçara Marçal. Featured as one of Pitchfork's "Great Records You May Have Missed: Winter 2020". Previously only available in Brazil. Includes 7" with three additional tracks, one of which exclusive to the 7".

SCRUFFS, THE Teenage Tragedies 1974-1979 LP
2021 restock. Hailing from Memphis, Tennessee, The Scruffs are best known for their classic power-pop LP Wanna Meet The Scruffs? issued in 1977. They started to record a follow-up album with John Fry at Ardent Studios, supposedly entitled "Teenage Gurls". In 1978, due to interest from Warner Bros. in New York City, the band moved to the Big Apple, playing at CBGB and Max's Kansas City. One year later, leader Stephen Burns returned to Memphis to finish the recordings which survived for years in his archives. They eventually resurfaced only on CD, in 1998 on Burns' private label Northern Heights and in 2003 on Rev'Ola. Die-hard popsters regard some of these songs as their strongest material with the best ones being compiled here on side one. Flashback: in 1974, the same year of Big Star's Radio City LP release and Chris Bell solo recording sessions, producer Jim Dickinson heard the Scruffs' early stages and their pre-Wanna Meet material and expected the band to be the next big thing. Only heard on CD on Northern Heights in 1998, the best tracks from this stunning collection, recorded in the same Shoe Studio where Chris Bell immortalized the track "I Am The Cosmos" basically at the same time, are compiled here on side two. EL'BLASZCZYK Rock In The Maquis 2LP
After the very successful Quirky Lost Tapes album on Born Bad Records (BORNBAD 085CD/LP, 2016), compiling his ultra-rare 45s, El'Blaszczyk dived back into his old and daunting project: Rock In The Maquis. This double -- 29 songs out of the 40 recorded during two years -- and conceptual record -- about World War Two, mixing members of the Resistance, Fritz and collaborators -- is his master work, long deferred and now boldly presented to the world. A retro-futurist record, homemade, on hand-build equipment, which brings to mind the French '60s, yéyés, and Nouvelle Vague movies, zig-zaging between an iconoclast and DIY Serge Gainsbourg, a twisted Jacques Dutronc, the delirious spirit of Les Blousons Noirs or an art brut painting. From "Jerk in Dunkerque" to "Rock des FFI via "Das ende der haricots" and "Ces boches sont faits pour morfler" (a very personal cover of "These Boots Are Made For Walking"), this record is a bomb, a proudly claimed terrorist attack. A minimalist son of Jean Yanne and Hasil Adkins, handyman of genius recording alone in his room, handling irony and iconoclasm as well as fuzz guitar and one finger Farfisa organ, El'Blaszczyk is the true unknown soldier of French rock n' roll. Sharing (let's not talk about collaboration, a world hold in contempt) his own forces with those of Mono-Tone Records and les Disques Beretto -- the Liminanas' label -- to form the El'Maquis Productions, El'Blaszczyk makes, with this Rock In The Maquis. LOS SAICOS Demolicion 7"
"The archaeology of rock'n'roll is much like any other form of digging. Significant finds demand the re-addressing of previously considered certainty. You can hear direct links to both The Stooges and The Cramps here and several more equally enthralling combos. The latter spawned several generations of individuals who would dig deep to previously (mostly) unheard seams of music and other forms of culture that have since become part of the mainstream fabric. When Los Saicos' front man Erwin Flores was asked how aware he and his friends were of what was happening in Britain and the US at the time, here's what he had to say: 'We knew the Beatles, they were our idols. We heard the Rolling Stones after recording Demolición and also Bob Dylan and others. The primitive nature of our songs is something that came spontaneously out of my head. The band had no problem with assimilating and arranging it. We thought of ourselves as bad boys and that must have been a driving force.' Primitive to the point of primordial, Los Saicos are an important benchmark. Not were. Who ever thought there could be a combo out there in Peru that would make The Sonics sound like Simon and bloody Garfunkel? There is quite possibly some other music out there, someplace, that could well make us re-address this consideration, but until then, cherish this short course of Saicotherapy." --Lindsay Hutton

STIMULATORS Loud Fast Rules! 7"
"Most New York punk histories skip from the original CBGB-era (circa 1974-1977) to hardcore (starting around 1983). Less covered, but crucial, was a six-year connecting scene, led by The Stimulators with close friends The Mad and -- coming from DC monthly, then relocating -- Bad Brains. Headlining CBs, equally fabled Max's Kansas City, Trax, Hurrah!, Danceteria, TR3, and dozens of dives, the Stims were so thrilling, their audience of 100-200 regular kids would knock aside tables and dance like maniacs the second they began. I was stunned at 17 when I first encountered them at Max's in 1979, opening for ex-Dead Boy Cheetah Chrome & the Casualties, to see a boy, 12-year-old Harley Flanagan, ferociously beating the skins, two mini-skirted women leaping and shouting backing vocals -- Denise Mercedes lacing hard rock leads into whipping guitar runs and Anne Gustaysson belting bouncy basslines -- and bug-eyed, wild, skinny gay poet-singer Patrick Mack stage-diving while crooning a la lggy, when that wasn't done. Hooked and danced-out, I saw them and Bad Brains literally 70 times each; seeing either once, you'd never miss them. I co-launched our magazine The Big Takeover around then, June 14, 1980, and I'm still at it. And this self-released (the majors having lost interest in punk) 'Loud Fast Rules!' b/w 'Run Run Run,' recorded that 1979, remains the true document of what was so exciting; my heart still races at its sheer giddy propulsion and exhilaration, launched in sound and feral attitude, at a time when older punks thought the genre had shriveled. Too, I'm pleased to have preserved a sole-copy test pressing that manager Donald Murk gave me of a third song recorded at that session: 'You Will Never Break My Heart,' released here 39 years later, because I owe the band a debt I can't repay. All three songs remain jaw-dropping." --Jack Rabid (editor and publisher Big Takeover, drummer of Even Worse)

EATER Outside View 7"
"One night we'd be driven around London with the Clash gate crashing posh music biz parties, meeting our pop star heroes while discussing punk's relevance, taking speed and 'getting off' with girls, many (and in some cases many, many) years older than ourselves. The next morning we'd be back at school, throwing paper aeroplanes at teacher. It was a brilliant double life." Andy Blade, From Vacant (Thames & Hudson 1999). They formed in November 1976 with an average age of 16 from Finchley, London and named themselves from a T Rex line "Tyrannosaurus Rex - eater of cars". They got much publicity from Dee Generate who was aged 14 joining the band to replace the original drummer. Eater supported the Damned at the Roxy and the Damned returned the favor by playing at Eater's school in Finchley where soft drinks were served! They played loud fast and exciting, performing a mixture of originals and covers (i.e. sped-up variations of Velvet Underground songs...) for instance changing Alice Cooper's "Eighteen" to "Fifteen". They were what it was all about; excitement and having a laugh.

KARACA, CEM Nem Kaldi? LP
2021 restock. Gatefold LP version. Cem Karaca announces his intent to slay all enemies of Istanbul's leftist counterculture with stompin' prog keyboards. Sophisticated and passionate, with flamboyant taste in sunglasses, Cem Karaca led Istanbul's music fans through a period of violent political turmoil. Karaca reworked traditional folk lyrics with molten electric bass lines that played up both a poet's broiling righteousness and also his listeners' common ground with their elders in Turkey's history. 1975's Nem Kaldi? gathers more '60s-'70s singles that lead the listener through Karaca's own musical history, skipping across various collaborations. Sink deeper into the intrigue both musical & otherwise as fractious personnel changes & real-life assassins multiply, yet the double-time drums & badass synthesizer schwings pound on.

RAKTA & DEAKFIDS Live At Sesc Pompeia LP
"Rapid Eye Records are proud to present two of the most innovative bands of the international underground scene; Rakta and Deafkids. On July 2nd, 2019 they performed an electrifying concert together at the legendary venue Sesc Pompeia in São Paulo, Brazil. Previously released only digitally, a selection of the set will now be available on LP as a limited edition release via Nada Nada Discos (Brazil) and the Berlin-based Rapid Eye Records (rest of the world). The setlist includes songs from the EP Forma/Sigilo, which showcases compositions written by both bands together, for the first time played live. 'Miragem' and 'Flor da Pele' from Rakta, out of their Falha Comum album, and 'Templo do Caos' and 'Espirais da Loucura', taken from Metaprogramação by Deafkids -- complete the record. There's no political anachronism in the songs, but rather a fragmented identity. Just like samba and other native cultural manifestations with roots in Brazil's history of cultural resistance, this blend of punk, primordial rhythms, electronic and experimental music also resonates as somewhat transcendental. Among instrumental distortions and parallel paths through music-making, Douglas, Marcelo and Mariano from Deafkids, and Carla, Paulo and Maurício from Rakta have shared many creative interactions, including a joint tour through Europe. The album sounds as a register of this psychoactive journey, one of aggressive echoes and sensations, that go beyond any sonic dimension."

TONGUE DEPRESSOR In the Quarter Column LP
"Tongue Depressor (New Haven, CT) is the duo of Zach Rowden and Henry Birdsey. They write, improvise, and perform drone-based music with fiddles, pedal steel, lap steel, contrabass, organ, and bells, usually involving microtonal tunings and re-arranged/re-tuned fragments of American church music. In another time, Tongue Depressor's ethereal tunings set into motion an unstable peace. With their bows, the duo conjured spirits to settle serpents. In another time, it was enough. In the Quarter Column showcases Tongue Depressor's progression into an exploratory and singular craft, balancing technical ability with discipline, and magnetism with precision. 'Everyone Was There' features Tongue Depressor's first use of magnetic tape loops, with Rowden manipulating recordings of Birdsey's playing while Birdsey bows his lap steel in accompaniment. The hypnotic piece delicately reminds us that what has come before will come again, bringing decay and dislocation. Warbly echoes of what is past are present. The duo's preferred territory exists outside of time. On the B side, 'A Singing,' Birdsey's resolute playing of a microtonal organ merges with the moans and sighs of Rowden's bass to illustrate a fresh lucidity that is patient and attentive. Demystification has disconnected the doors. Grasping sound and experience from within, In the Quarter Column builds an apparitional world for the listener to inhabit. Once again, Tongue Depressor offers anyone with the ability and will to listen a very generous gift." --Jason Filer (Crazy Doberman, Doberman, Gateway) Edition of 312 records pressed at Burlington Record Plant on Black Smog vinyl (appears black until held up to the light).

FUKUDA, KOSEI Ruten+ 2LP
After two series of conceptual EPs and the intricate experimental "Enso" Festival compilation, Kosei Fukuda returns with a full-length solo project, and his debut album. This marks his thirteenth release on the Reiten label, a platform he created to showcase his techno music and a more general, experimental aesthetic agenda. As a producer and sound artist, Fukuda has shared his time between Tokyo and Berlin. The artist's energy has now been channeled toward making one coherent authorial statement capable of bringing all the strands of his musical and theoretical outlook together, while also distilling a new vision that transcends the confines of the dancefloor. It comes in the form of the generous double album entitled Ruten -- a Japanese concept whose closest Western counterpart is the ancient Greek notion of "panta rhei". Referencing Heraclitus' famous adage that "everything flows" is not just the philosophical inspiration behind the album but also the succinct aesthetic manifesto of sorts. The full-length perfectly facilitates the task of expressing this insight and reinterpreting it for a new generation of listeners. In principle, the two albums called Ruten- and Ruten+ are meant to represent the principle of ying and yang, the two elemental forces and the eternal cycle of energy. As a whole, they signify a journey from the nascent being to the eventual dissolution of everything into nothing. Yet there's still a deeper message at play: the omnipresence of patterns. Even the incessant flow of changes is patterned. In this work, Fukuda hints at an idea that a pattern is both an abstract structural quality and a concrete aesthetic value. The music contained here is a complex sonic story about the interlocking meanings of pattern and flow, and it is a meditative exploration of the human experience of this entwinement. The first volume starts appropriately with the unassuming intro "dawn" and proceeds from the investigative look at the evanescent yet tangible droplets of "mist" and on to the contemplative gaze at the most distant, unreachable constellation of "nebula". Regardless of metaphorical intent though, the music moves within one universe of downtempo, ambient, and drone, combining the palpable beats (rhythmic pattern) with the atmospheric backgrounds (harmonic flow). As is the case with all Reiten label releases, the carefully designed sonic textures and moods take precedence over traditional melodic lines. But make no mistake -- this is not a self-indulgent "free" experimentalism. Rather, it's a progression of loose but recognizable sonic shapes or figures.

With a feature from the mighty Shabaka Hutchings bolstering the EP to a broader audience, and astonishing live performances, the record led to sold out shows across Europe in 2018. Since then the band have been busy on-hire for other prominent artists within international soulful jazz scenes, backing for the likes of Charlotte dos Santos and Poppy Ajudha. WARISH Next To Pay LP
LP version. "With a name like Warish, the San Diego noisy punk-metal trio assured listeners they were in for a maniacal bludgeoning from the get-go. But the band has never been as dark and bitingly vicious as the wholly ominous Next To Pay. The band's mix of early AmRep skronk, dark horror rock and budget doom antipathy is taken to a whole new level on this thirteen song invective. 'Next To Pay is about a sense of imminent doom, everyone is going to die,' vocalist/guitarist Riley Hawk says. 'It's not the happiest record, I guess.' To say the least. On the title track opener, Hawk screams through shredded vocal chords with the tuneful rage of Kill 'Em All-era James Hetfield and the seething desperation of Kurt Cobain. 'This album is more of an evolution, it's a little more punk-heavy,' Hawk says of the group quickly founded in 2018. 'We figured out what our sound was.' And with that evolution comes a change in the lineup. Original drummer Nick (Broose) McDonnell plays on about half of the songs, while new drummer Justin de la Vega brings an even tighter urgency to the remaining, more recent tracks. Bassist Alex Bassaj joined after the debut album was recorded and here showcases muscular and melodic low end previously missing. Riley Hawk is also the pro-skater son of Tony Hawk. Inspired by early-Nirvana, The Misfits, The Spits and Master Of Reality-era Black Sabbath, Next To Pay keeps things heavy and pummeling at all times. The guitars are heavy and powerful, though decidedly not straightforward cookie cutter punk; more like Greg Ginn's and Buzz Osbourne's wiry contortions, and occasionally drenched in chorus effects. The rhythms bash right through it all with aggressive force ensuring that nothing gets overly complicated. Warish's cover of '80s Dischord Records punks Gray Matter turns the emotive flail of 'Burn No Bridges' into a Motörhead-style basher."

VA Brown Acid - The Twelfth Trip CD
"That's right, Riding Easy has reached a toker's dozen editions of brilliant long-lost, rare, and unreleased hard rock, heavy psych, and proto-metal tracks from the '60s-70s. Clearly this has become a bonafide archaeological movement as each new installment leads the listener to more exciting new discoveries. Like the label has done throughout this series, all of these tracks were painstakingly licensed legitimately and the artists were paid. Make oneself comfortable and prepare for yet another deep, deep dive into the treasure trove of dank, subterranean, wild-eyed and hairy rock 'n' roll with Brown Acid - The Twelfth Trip. Here are some examples of the treasures that lie herein: The Waters start this Trip off right with swampy fuzz- and phaser-soaked dueling guitars oozing from the grooves of their 1969 single 'Mother Samwell.' The Louisville, KY trio somehow failed to make much of a splash however, only issuing two 45s, one in '68 and this rocker the following year, before eventually evaporating in '72. The bassist went on to play in Hank Williams Jr.'s band for a couple of decades, so the band's fortunes weren't entirely sunken. Side two opens with Ace Song Service, who probably thought they were pretty clever with their risqué acronym name, but it's their b-side 'Persuasion' that really kicks A.S.S. Rollicking, relentless drums, walking bass, staggering guitars and shimmering Hammond organ shake the foundations while crooning blue-eyed soul vocals remind the listener that this is still the late-60s. The Trip concludes with Dickens, whose 'Sho' Need Love' / 'Don't Talk About My Music' 45 is one of those record collector's Holy Grail type of releases. The 1971 single only exists as a demo, printed as a white label promo pressing for Scepter Records. Comprised of NRBQ's road crew and some band members, all playing instruments they didn't know how to play, the recording happened essentially by accident when studio time became available after Gomer Pyle actor and balladeer Jim Nabors cancelled a session. The group quickly cut a few songs, which an enthusiastic A&R man had pressed up, before the label president nixed it and fired the VP for allowing such nonsense. It's believed that only about 50 copies survived!"

AZZARO, ROMAIN Colours Of Now LP
After a long hiatus, Romain Azzaro is reactivating his Rouge Mécanique Musique imprint with an exciting collaborative project, exploring new musical territories. As the world started to flip on its head early in 2020, a quintet of musicians formed in Berlin: Paul Behnam (guitar), Sacha Hladiy (grand piano), Nicolai Johannsen (vibrating metal plates), Ruth Mogrovejo (viola), and Azzaro himself (zither) recorded their first album over three months in Azzaro's living room, studio and basement. In Hladiy's words, "a magical musical circus". The collision of these different personalities and sensibilities makes Colours Of Now a singular, spontaneous and inimitable object, exploring neoclassical, ambient and experimental music. "Romain had a wide-open vision for a brand new project, connecting musicians from different horizons," says Paul Behnam, "a lot of different processes and beautiful vibrations were shared at this moment in his place." Nicolai Johannsen adds: "Colours Of Now is a portrait of a time which was and wasn't; an alternation between existence and its opposite. The album is a collective formation, realized through different energies drawn to the same center." "This album has become a compilation of people, situations and emotions to me," explains Ruth Mogrojevo. "2020, the year in which we all met, has been an orderly metamorphosis from which we cannot exclude our professional activities. We all met playing music and deep down we knew that the whole project could be something great and actually meaningful." Colours Of Now is a quintet that formed in early 2020 during quarantine in Berlin. The self-titled album, produced and mixed by Romain Azzaro, explores the different shades of sound in a time where uncertainty leads to the present moment. Also feature Joao Comazzi.

FLUGEL, ROMAN Eating Darkness LP
LP version. 140 gram vinyl. Includes download with bonus Anima EP. Roman Flügel is a magician. This statement is far from being a hyperbole. Just put the needle down on any record of his (collaborations included) since the early '90s and see for yourself: none of them are without that special effect. The magic works instantly. And as the thing with magic goes: it's challenging to explain it. That's what makes it magic. Eating Darkness is the title of his newest spell. Affected by the fundamental shock that any system got in 2020 -- but not the result thereof -- it is an album that could absorb it -- as its name might suggest. Music and nightlife work hand in hand as escapism and as anchors or as the undercoat of social interactions. They enable people to deal with hardships as well as the burden and the joy of life. That is the starting point and hope of Eating Darkness: the outlook and invitation to enrich each and everyone's existence. Bound to the single LP format and reminiscent of a time with format limitations, the nine tracks are testament to Flügel's weakness for the art of pop music with the use of little and especially short motifs. Furthermore, equipped with a clear instrumentation and without any camouflage, Eating Darkness corresponds to his idea of a virtual band. As it happens, the opener is called "The Magic Briefcase". That sits not only well with my first sentence, but pretty much embodies the album and Roman Flügel's apparatus in an alternative title: Crystal clear sounds and melodies bounce on and off the dancefloor, living room and club are pulled together and transcendental moments take turns with the tangibility of reality. After all, that is how a real magician allures you.

SPECTRES Spectres II Resonances Book
Limited restock. To resonate: re-sonare. To sound again -- with the immediate implication of a doubling. Sound and its double: sent back to us, reflected by surfaces, diffracted by edges and corners. Sound amplified, swathed in an acoustics that transforms it. Sound enhanced by its passing through a certain site, a certain milieu. Sound propagated, reaching out into the distance. But to resonate is also to vibrate with sound, in unison, in synchronous oscillation. To marry with its shape, amplifying a common destiny. To join forces with it. And then again, to resonate is to remember, to evoke the past and to bring it back. Or to plunge into the spectrum of sound, to shape it around a certain frequency, to bring out sonic or electric peaks from the becoming of signals. Resonance embraces a multitude of different meanings. Or rather, remaining always identical, it is actualized in a wide range of different phenomena and circumstances. Such is the multitude of resonances evoked in the pages below: a multitude of occurrences, events, sensations, and feelings that intertwine and welcome one other. Everyone may have their own history, everyone may resonate in their own way, and yet we must all, in order to experience resonance at a given moment, be ready to welcome it. The welcoming of what is other, whether an abstract outside or on the contrary an incarnate otherness ready to resonate in turn, is a condition of resonance. This idea of the welcome is found throughout the texts that follow, opening up the human dimension of resonance, a dimension essential to all creativity and to any exchange, any community of mind. Which means that resonance here is also understood as being, already, an act of paying attention, i.e. a listening, an exchange. Addressing one or other of the forms that this idea of resonating can take on (extending -- evoking -- reverberating -- revealing -- transmitting), each of the contributions brought together in this volume reveals to us a personal aspect, a fragment of the enthralling territory of sonic and musical experimentation, a territory upon which resonance may unfold. The book has been designed as a prism and as a manual. May it in turn find a unique and profound resonance in each and every reader. Features writings by: Jean-Luc Nancy, Tomoko Sauvage, Christian Zanési, Maryanne Amacher, Christina Kubisch, Okkyung Lee, David Toop, Pali Meursault, David Rosenboom, Chris Corsano, Ellen Fullman, and The Caretaker. Editors: François J. Bonnet, Bartolomé Sanson. Binding: thread-sewn metallic softcover; Size: 135 x 200 cm; Page count: 196 pp.; First edition: 2500 copies; Language(s): French/English. GROWING Diptych CD
"It's not easy to summarize any band whose career has stretched over two decades. In the case of Growing, though, it's all in the name: since 2001, the core duo of Kevin Doria and Joe DeNardo have been making vibrating, explorative experimental music that is in a forever state of evolution. In that time, they have amassed a hard-to-define and influential body of work, and Diptych sees the band operating at the height of their 'big amp ambient' powers. Diptych is a masterclass in slowly undulating ambient drift, and quite possibly the definitive headphone album of the year. Guitars that sound like organs pointed at the heavens are cut with subtly damaged electronic moves, the end result being a record that is at once ecstatic, transportive and gritty. Ambient and new age music have become part of the larger indie vocabulary. Things were different over twenty years ago in the Olympia, Washington punk community where Doria and DeNardo got their start. Both veterans of aggressive music by the time the band began, Growing emerged like a rainbow at the other end of the heavy music tunnel: loud as ever, but with a sonic and aesthetic position that ran counter to punk rock norms. Created over the past year and a half, Diptych extrapolates on Growing's formative drone-based work, showing a unit in full control of a language that they have built and reconfigured over time. The music here continues to be an intuitive outgrowth of a friendship that started in late-90s Olympia and still bears fruit today -- even as each member lives in a different city."

BEATSTALKERS, THE Scotland's No. 1 Beat Group LP
2021 restock. Complete recordings by The Beatstalkers, 1963-69, the legendary band from Glasgow. Fabulous mod-beat, wild R&B, and pop-psych, including all their 45 sides for Decca and CBS plus early demos. Formed in Glasgow in 1962 during the early beat boom by Alan Mair and Eddie Campbell, their line-up also included Davie Lennox, Tudge' Williamson (replaced by Jeff Allen) and Ronnie Smith. Playing an authentic brand of rhythm n' blues and soul covers, they soon took the city by storm and were famous for their riotous shows, attracting hordes of screaming girls and young fans. No wonder they were dubbed "the Scottish Beatles" by the press. Between 1965 and 1969, The Beatstalkers would go on to release a total of seven singles. All these sides are featured here. Including mod/freakbeat classics like "Base Line", "Ev'rybody's Talkin' 'Bout My Baby", "You'd Better Get A Better Hold On", plus several tracks penned by a young David Bowie ("Silver Tree Top School For Boys", "Everything Is You", "When I'm Five"), a killer psych cover of The Action's "Little Boy", and more. The Beatstalkers were a strong live attraction in the clubs and ballrooms around Great Britain (they also held a residence at the Marquee) and were highly praised by their contemporaries, including The Who, with whom they shared a "Ready Steady Go" television appearance. David Bowie was also among their crowd and through mutual manager Ken Pitt, he ended up writing three songs for them. He also played guitar and sang backing vocals on some of the recording sessions. Some of The Beatstalkers 7" were also released in the US, Australia, and France (where an EP housed in a cool picture sleeve was issued). The band also toured Germany many times. In 1969, after their van was stolen with all their equipment, The Beatstalkers broke up. Eddie Campbell was later in Tear Gas and Jeff Allen went on to play for Dr. K's Blues Band and then East Of Eden. Alan Mair was a co-founder of The Only Ones (of "Another Girl Another Planet" fame). The band reunited for a show in Glasgow and in 2018 a book about the band was published. Remastered sound; includes color insert with rare photos and detailed liner notes by Lenny Helsing (Ugly Things).

ARTERY One Afternoon In A Hot Air Baloon LP
Brilliant second album from the wholly original cult Sheffield post punk band, Artery. Released in 1983 on Red Flame, One Afternoon In A Hot Air Balloon is an adventure on its own. Artery somehow replaced the somber post-punk of the debut with a stream of melancholic pop paeans influenced by British folk and certain ballroom dances, with a spectral keyboard sound worth killing for. The secret weapon -- when compared to the rest of their discography -- is largely explained by the presence of keyboard player and (by now) main composer Christopher Hendrick. The band was in fact reduced to a trio with former members Mark Gouldthorpe (guitar) and Garry Wilson (drums) now supported by the singular effort of Hendrick (also on bass and xylophone). At the same time Garry Wilson was playing in an early incarnation of Pulp. Despite the early Joy Division influence -- which the band firmly dismissed -- Artery is moving forward into the so-called new romantic era. A vaudeville scenario, lightyears ahead from the streets and the aggro-culture, a way to some pleasant and revealing experience.

ALTERNATIVE TV Vibing Up The Senile Man (Part One) LP
Possibly one of the weirdest experiments in the post-punk realm, Vibing Up the Senile Man (Part One) is the second studio album by English anti-heroes Alternative TV, originally released in March 1979 on small indie label Deptford Fun City. Forget about the influential 1978 debut -- The Image Has Cracked -- frontman Mark Perry is literally leaving the planet in this effort. "There are free jazz influences; I'd got into the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Sun Ra ... I'd moved into this house with an amazing music room -- pianos, clarinets, you name it -- and we'd always be picking up stuff from junk shops." The description set the pace for a unique performance, not only the Afro-American heritage, traces of the Canterbury school are almost evident as the early experiment of the BBC Radiophonic workshop. Is it safe to consider Vibing Up The Senile Man on the same time-line as Robert Wyatt's The End Of An Ear and Throbbing Gristle's 20 Jazz Funk Greats (Genesis P-Orridge is on board on two tracks, playing assorted percussion) -- Judge by yourself and don't be scared.

VA Live At The Vortex LP
The compilation that started it all, originally released in 1977. In October a series of bands have been recorded at the Vortex Club for a proposed live album along the lines of the first Live At the Roxy WC2 record. The record featured the Maniacs, Suspects, Wasps, Neo, Art Attacks, Bernie Tormé, and Mean Street who were all regular players at the Vortex and Roxy. Released in 1977 -- right after the punk-rock breakdown -- the compilation made way for a revolutionary statement supporting the newborn counterculture.

MUSLIMGAUZE Mohammad Ali Jinnah CD
2021 restock. Unsurprisingly for an artist as prolific and strident as Bryn Jones was, the flood of material he sent to labels and compatriots was not always carefully categorized. Also, sometimes he would be so eager to release material that if things weren't happening fast enough, he'd just send in another tape. And that circumstance is why the fascinating oddity Mohammad Ali Jinnah exists. Staalplaat has previously released, in 2002, the Muslimgauze album Sarin Israel Nes Ziona (2002). While continuing to sort through and release the material Jones left behind with his death in 1999, the Mohammad Ali Jinnah tape was found to have significant overlap with that now out of print album, but only to a certain extent. Six of the 15 tracks on Mohammad Ali Jinnah match up with material from the earlier tape (which included 20 tracks), but when Jones resubmitted this tape he also included extended mixes of four of the tracks from the original album ("Imam Fainted", "Yousif Water Pipe Habit", "Opulent Maghrebi Meze", and "Indo Muslem Atlas") as well as five entirely new compositions. The result is a fascinating re-setting of some of the music from that under-heard release. Whether Jones preferred one arrangement to the other is sadly lost information, but listeners now can appreciate a wholly new experience with the material herein, even if some of the material itself has been previously released. And the new tracks are fascinating, even by Jones's usual standards, whether they're the grinding, obsessively focused percussion workouts, "For Larger Iran" and "Burnt Pages Of Ali Jinnah Koran", or the cryptically distant likes of "Cold Turkey". Paired with classic tracks like the bass-distorted, Middle Eastern boom bap of "Kurds Eye View" and the furtively head-nodding "Zahir Din, Cabdriver Of Zind", the result is a release unlike anything else in Jones's discography. All tracks written, played and recorded by Muslimgauze. Edition of 700.

MUSLIMGAUZE Drugsherpa CD
2021 restock. The provenance of bonus tracks can often be tangential or suspicious; in this case, it's more like a homecoming. When Bryn Jones turned in the master for what would become 1994's Drugsherpa mini-CD, Staalplaat selected the 20-minute title-track, truly one of Muslimgauze's most distinct and awe-inspiring tracks, to fill the release. The sinuous, doom-haunted "Drugsherpa" still sounds fresh today, but in 1994 it was so far ahead of its time, that the rest of us wouldn't catch up until a decade or more later; only now does it really sound like it has contemporaries. But it wasn't alone on that tape; and with the mini-CD long since sold out, this reissue releases its siblings into the world for the first time. Unlike "Drugsherpa" itself, now restored to its original place as track three on the reissue, the other six tracks on this now 56-minute album are all remixes of other Muslimgauze material. As usual for Jones, those remixes take the songs in all sorts of directions, subtle or otherwise; shorter, longer, backwards, dubbed-out, less dubbed-out, and so on. The result shows anew the infinite variety, multiplicity, and complexity of Jones' work, and functions as a kind of ad hoc compilation of material from several recent-at-the-time Muslimgauze releases as well (plus a remounting of "Gulfwar" from 1987's Abu Nidal). But the darkly brooding "Drugsherpa" itself remains, justly, the center of attention here. Less directly political than much of Jones' work, it builds up to an immense, slow groove until finally shaking itself to pieces in your ears by the end. Muslimgauze is always evocative. With Drugsherpa, Jones practically gives the listeners visions. He always intended these tracks to go together (as shown by the seamless segue into "Jerusalem Knife (Wail Mix)," but in a way Drugsherpa is sui generis, even for Muslimgauze.

VA Keb Darge Presents Atomic Rhythm! Stag-O-Lee DJ Set Vol. 5 CD
Stag-O-Lee continue the DJ Set series with a compilation by cult DJ and master of many compilations, Keb Darge. Liner notes from Keb Darge (London October 2020): "Rockabilly didn't cross my world until the early nineteen eighties at a Dirtbox weekender in Bournemouth, until then I was a pure northern soul boy. I didn't really get stuck into collecting the stuff until a decade later, but when I did what a wonderful world of tunes opened up to me, and I went wild on it. I was very lucky to be doing a record stall in Camden market at the time just across from Boz Boorer and Neil Scott's stall. They along with other serious collectors Dave Vickers, Barney Koumis, Cosmic Keith, Jim Fox, Dave Crozier, and many others taught me all I needed to know. I only ever made one great rockabilly discovery which none of them knew, 'Little Bit Lonesome' by Charles Ross, but I was happy enough buying all their recommendations as they were all new and exciting for me. I have done several rockabilly comps before, but sadly the Philippines typhoon in 2013 destroyed my village and forced me to sell the bulk of my collection. Here are some of my favorites that I never got round to putting out before that happened. Two of the aforementioned collectors are no longer with us. I therefore dedicate this comp to Dave Vickers and Cosmic Keith who both had a huge influence on my life and my musical taste." Features Fender IV, The Sonics, James Mask, John Worthan, Vince Maloy, Don Wade, Billy Wayne, Wally Willette and his Globe Rockers, Darrell Rhodes And The Falcons, Arlie Miller And The Bullets, Cruisers, Joe D. Johnson, Bobby McDowell, Jerry Arnold And The Rhythm Captains, Gene Terry, Glen Glenn, Red Moore, Maylon Humphries And His Tri-Seniors, Van Brothers, Sonny Fisher, Benny Cliff Trio, Gene Norman, Tommy Nelson, Lloyd McCollough, Don Ellis And Royal Dukes, Sonny Wallace, Floyd Mack, Rod Morris, Carl Trantham And The Rhythm Allstars, Jim Oertling, Hodges Brothers, and Lonesome Drifter.

Johanna Pigott's Scribble project floated through the airwaves down under during the first years of the '80s, gathered here is a succinct collection of her dreamy electronic pop from that era. There's an enigmatic feel woven throughout, songs such as "River" set sail on an imagined Antipodean Balearic vibe, while blissful end-of-nighter "Mother of Pearl" would likely get DJ Harvey in a spin. "The Party" poignantly mulls missing the big night out, while "Mr Calico" navigates spooked out noir before the eerie synth-waves of "B4" (rearranged by local maestro Hysteric).

SUPERVOID Giant Nothing LP
Supervøid: an empty section of space defined by the lack of superclusters. In this particular case, this empty section of space is missing an estimated 10,000 galaxies. Scientists suspect that it may be draining energy from light travelling through. Getting through such a big chasm takes hundreds of millions of years. The travel has begun. Supervøid is a new three-piece instrumental combo with roots in doom, sludge, noise, ambient, and blues/country. Formed in 2017 by guitar player/producer Eraldo Bernocchi, guitar player Xabier Iriondo, drummer Jacopo Pierazzuoli the trio decided to involve avant/classic cellist Jo Quail choosing cello instead of a vocalist as a feature on the debut album. Supervøid delivers a huge impact in terms of emotions and energy combining heavy riffs with cinematic atmospheres, ambient washes with groovy giant down tuned guitars, classical strings sections looped in real time with noise walls juxtaposing the elements to create an organic contrast. Supervøid has no singer because it has a cello player, a voice-non-voice lying down captivating melodic and harmonic movements into the nothingness of the "giant nothing"; as well has no bass player as Bernocchi's guitars have been treated in order to add sub frequencies to the mix. After months of work the combo recorded their debut album The Giant Nothing and is now ready to release it. Produced by the band and mixed by Eraldo Bernocchi the debut album is an emotional rollercoaster ranging from in your face sludge/doom tracks to soundtrack oriented ambient bluesy pieces with baritone guitars and cello dialogue with noisy interventions and spaced percussions.

LAST DAYS OF APRIL Even The Good Days Are Bad CD
Since the mid-1990s, Stockholm's Last Days of April have created a succession of luminous, hook-laden LPs, earning the band's lead vocalist, guitarist, and all-around auteur, Karl Larsson, a reputation as a bonafide songwriter's songwriter. With Even The Good Days Are Bad, Larsson and co. return with their tenth long player, following 2015's Sea of Clouds (TR 316CD/LP), a shimmering collection of eight new Larsson-penned songs that show him at the apex of his craft and LDOA achieving new levels of strength, honesty, and brilliance. The album's title track is an introspective meditation that manages to be ecstatic, even anthemic. With glistening guitars, swerving synth lines, punchy drumming, burnished analog production, and Larsson's vulnerable yet resilient vocals, Even The Good Days Are Bad is at once new and old, of the moment and utterly classic, timely and timeless. Even The Good Days Are Bad began gestating in 2019, with Larsson unearthing songs dating back to the early 2000s and writing a gush of new material. The band's longtime rhythm section -- drummer Magnus Olsson and bassist Rikard Lidhamn -- joined Larsson that fall for two marathon days at Stockholm's legendary Studio Gröndahl. (LDOA have recorded several releases there, as have The Hives.) "We recorded everything in Gröndahl to tape," Larsson says of the band's preferred approach to basic tracks. "All analog and tons of outboard. Classic stuff, you know... I'm a gear nut." (Frequent collaborator Fredrik Hermansson added atmospheric mellotron to "Had Enough" and Frans Hägglund engineered.) Larsson then brought the recordings to his home studio for overdubs and general TLC, taking his time to achieve the album's rich textures. But something unexpected happened on the way to transcendent pop glory: a global pandemic. Even The Good Days Are Bad was already nearing completion, but the crisis slowed and complicated the process. More significantly, it also made the new record hauntingly, profoundly prescient. The title track now reflected the mood of the entire planet. On "Alone", Larsson channels the isolation we've all been enduring and making it better. "For lyrics," Larsson says, "I wanted them to be straightforward. No fuzz." The result is totally cathartic, just what the doctor ordered for 2021. "Let it bring whatever feelings it brings," Larsson says of Even The Good Days Are Bad, dispensing a bit of helpful advice: "It sounds best played loud."

SLY & ROBBIE Red Hills Rd. LP
"Sly & Robbie have been at the vanguard of innovation in Jamaican music for 40+ years. Often imitated, never equaled, rather than bemoan copycats, they just forge ahead, not looking back. On Red Hills Rd., they continue to show the rest of the world how it's done: catchy danceable beats courtesy of Sly and lines heavy as lead bass thanks to Robbie. Add to that a hook on the guitar or the synth and, boom, a new hit by the Riddim Twins. 'We wanted a raw sound, nothing too overproduced or with a complicated mix' says Robbie as he runs late to yet another session. Red Hills Road is named after the street that was a hotbed of music during the 60's and 70's, with up to a dozen clubs featuring live bands. It was Evil People and Tit For Tat that Sly and Robbie met and decided to form their renowned act. On Red Hills Rd., Sly & Robbie work exclusively with their longtime Jamaican musical companions: Lenky Marsden, Robbie Lyn, Dean Fraser, Ansel Collins, and many other great Jamaican musicians grace this mostly instrumental album with their presence while Rorey Baker handles the mixing duties. 'I have a love for instrumentals' says Sly Dunbar 'and so we've been doing just that, and especially on a dancehall beat. There were lots of hit ska and rocksteady instrumentals, but in the dancehall era, not so many. I was just cutting tracks. When I listen to dancehall, there's nothing exciting happening. So I started to search for something different that people can listen to. I even go back to kumina and mento on tracks like Linstead Market and Coronation Market.' Indeed, Red Hills Road is not merely a Dancehall album, it's more in the league of experimental masterpieces by Herbie Hancock, Bill Laswell and the like, blending the old with new to create something previously unheard that people enjoy."

JULIAN Y SU COMBO A Buenaventura Con Julian Y Su Combo Sabor LP
During a 20-year period Julián Y Su Combo released eight LPs on almost as many different companies and A Buenaventura was their only record with Medellín-based label Indústria Fonográfica Metrópoli (later reissued by INS on their Fabuloso imprint as Descarga Salsa Y Boogaloo). Julián Angulo described the combo's sound as Afroantillano, combining Cuban, New York Latin, and Puerto Rican elements with Colombia's own tropical costeño traditions. The group's swinging, jazzy arrangements were distinguished by Angulo's prominent rhythm guitar, a hot rhythm section, and the potent brass lineup of two saxophones and a trumpet (much like Cortijo Y Su Combo) but with the occasional addition of a clarinet or flute (for extra Cuban flavor). Singer José Arboleda lends an earthy, joyful Afro-Colombian sound to the vocals and the entire unit is held together by a combination of his fantastic voice and super-tight, swinging ensemble playing with the occasional expert instrumental solo at just the right interval. A Buenaventura is a sought-after collector's record that is popular with DJs not only for the power ("salsa brava" all the way) and diversity of its sound (with hot dance genres that range from guaracha, son montuno and guaguancó to boogaloo and descarga, as well as cumbia and currulao) but also for how well it was arranged, engineered and recorded, making it both a pleasurable listening experience and a dancefloor killer. Though the credits do not list a year, most likely it was released in the late 1960s or early 1970s and then pick up again with INS in 1975. In addition to several tasty originals by Julián and other Colombian composers, there are also covers of Cuban classics as well as the funky boogaloo anthem "Palo de mango" by New York's Eddie Palmieri (with lyrics by the Puerto Rican sonero, Cheo Feliciano). Recommended by DJ Bongohead of Peace & Rhythm. Presented in its original artwork and pressed on 180 gram vinyl.

RNXRX returns to VEYL for his debut album, Impreciso. No stranger to the label, the artist first made an appearance on Previously Undisclosed Rituals and then again with Sigil, a collection of B-sides which act as the perfect prelude to this offering. Derived from an alchemy of inspiration, the album is the result of endless nights unearthing samples, vinyl oddities, effects databases from a bygone era and the artist's own post-processed vocals -- imprecise components which all combine perfectly to form this LP. Unconstrained by genre, Impreciso journeys through strains of body music, psychedelic rock, soundtrack and more, delivering electronic experimentations which expose the artist's darkest tendencies while revealing a long admiration of post-punk, hip-hop and science fiction's finest. Twelve tracks falling somewhere between homage and reinvention, Impreciso operates with '80s circuitry, throws back to '90s beat nostalgia and drills into a cyber-verse for a familiar yet unexpected trip perfect for this moment. RAHBANI, ZIAD Bennesbeh Labokra... Chou? LP
Wewantsounds present a reissue of Ziad Rahbani's cult album, Bennesbeh Labokra...Chou? released in Lebanon only and mixing Arabic music with jazz, bossa nova, and other western influences. Curated by Lebanese-born music expert Mario Choueiry from Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, the album is reissued on vinyl for the first time since 1978. When Ziad Rahbani released Bennesbeh Labokra... Chou? he was only 22 years old. He had started to make an impression on the Lebanese cultural scene a few years before, while still a teenager, composing and releasing albums under his own name. Born into an illustrious musical family -- his mother is the legendary Lebanese Diva Fairuz and his father, Assi Rahbani, was a renowned composer and part of one of the most famous Lebanese groups, The Rahbani Brothers -- Ziad quickly gained exposure as a gifted composer and producer. When his father fell ill in the mid '70s, he took over as Fairuz's producer which led to a fruitful collaboration starting with the 1979 album Wahdon. Highly influenced by other genres of music, Rahbani had started bringing modern western influences to traditional Arabic music. 1978 saw the release of two key albums by the young musician, the disco 12" Abu Ali which went on to become one of the most sought-after Arabic albums on the international DJ scene and Bennesbeh Labokra... Chou?. A soundtrack to Rahbani's eponymous play, the album gathers all the musical interludes heard during the play, a social diatribe about the Beirut society underlining the difficulties of living in the tense social and political climate of the Lebanese civil war. Written by and starring Rahbani, the play follows the everyday life and problems of a young couple running a cafe in the heart of Beirut. The play underlying Rahbani's leftist sensitivity was an immense success and the album was released the same year (the complete play was also released over three LPs). Bennesbeh Labokra... Chou? is a skillful blend of Arabic music and bossa nova, groove with funky beats, and jazz. It's interesting to hear an early version of "Al Bosta" which would grace Fairuz's 1979 album Wahdon in a faster, funkier version. With a knack for cinematic orchestrations reminiscent of Lalo Schifrin, Rahbani also brings more complex arrangements to the album. Gatefold sleeve. Remastered audio. Two-page insert with a new introduction by Choueiry.
