DREDD FOOLE Songs To Despond Ya LP
Warehouse find, last copies. Recording from 2008. "The Dredd Foole catalog is wide (and deep) and yet this new release manages to carve another distinct tributary into the swamped landscape. As the title implies, Songs To Despond Ya falls on the songwriting end of the Foole Spectrum, and he takes full advantage of the opportunity to flesh out his bardic impulse. The results are raw and immediate, devoid of electronic effects, and all the more timeless for it. Of course, whether he's offering up ballads or free-hootin' and -hollerin', Dredd Foole always tugs at the heart and mind of anyone receptive enough to leave those doors open just a crack. Sleeve art by Michael K. Edition of 500."

DETROIT, EDDY Black Crow Gazebo LP
Sorry to report: RIP Eddy Detroit. This was his final album from 2016. Eddy Detroit returns with a brand-new LP! The legend refuses to diminish. Eddy Detroit crafts eight new songs full of his trademark twisted folk, satanic Americana, and trance voodoo magic. This album ventures into the deranged psychosis of the Phoenix AZ characters that inhibit Eddy's world. Multiple-personality girlfriends, twisted and rouge hanger-goners, and life as a street musician in the infernal Arizona summer heat. Another cast of local musicians are on board for this record that features cello, ocean drum, piano, guitar, bongos, and violin. This is all capped off by the B-side, a deep, trance-inducing descent into Dante's Inferno that features Alan Bishop (Sun City Girls) on vocals, Doug Clark (Victory Acres/Feederz) on synthesizer, and Eddy Detroit on bongos -- overlaid with a recording of Eddy Detroit waxing on about his extraordinary life. "Toe Sucker Beach" is meant as an homage to The Velvet Underground's "The Gift" -- a track that can be listened to as a whole or as a hard pan, with the demented instrumental in one channel and Eddy's reminiscences in the other channel. This record is another swan dive into the brilliant mind of one of the most original outsider musicians out there. Limited edition of 400.

POLER, SAU Nocturno LP
Sau Poler makes his return to Atomnation with Nocturno, a debut album that finds him pushing himself beyond his usual confines. The nine immersive, meticulously crafted tracks arrive in Spring 2021 and come with original artwork by New York artist Jane Dickson. Sau Poler is part of a so-called golden generation of Spanish producers alongside the likes of Pional, John Talabot, and Bawrut. He has put out three EPs on this label before landing on others such as Mule Musiq, Modern Obscure Music, and Fort Romeau's Cin Cin, where he honed his organic house, techno and ambient fusions. They're often bright but obscure, intimate and contemporary, with taut samples and shuffling beats that manage to be leftfield as well as nostalgic, and have had support from the likes of Kelly Lee Owens and Dixon. All that also plays out in his DJ sets which have taken him all over Europe to the likes of DGTL and Sonar. This new album was recorded between 2018 and 2020 in Poler's studio in Badalona. Two years of experimentation, expanding his methods of composition and moving out of his comfort zone eventually led to the concept of Nocturno. It's an album that draws on those special late-night feelings: introspective sounds, a middle ground between lightness and dark, euphoria and loneliness. It means the music is often hypnotic and mystic, with references to the conceptual movies, sonic obscurities and the video games of his youth. Two pieces of gear were also key to shape that sound: the Roland JD800 synth and the Roland Chorus Echo-301 tape delay, which help lend the whole thing a cohesive, immersive feel, with some first ever uses of an electric guitar and trumpet also adding further color and emotion.

SOLA Un Muneco De Madera LP
Repressed. Be With Records present a reissue of Sola's Un Muñeco De Madera, originally released in 1971. Originally released on RCA in Mexico, it's kaleidoscopic Acapulcan-funk. The album's endless grooves are propelled by softly rocking, quasi-library funk breaks. Vocally, Sola is in step with the '60s French pop-chanteuse style, but of course her lyrics are delivered in sensuous Spanish. Her voice is beautiful. Pillowy soft and tender, it can suddenly explode in mystical anger. These are ten tracks of moody, mysterious vibes that stir the spirit and sooth the soul. The LP was written, arranged, and directed by prolific Spanish composer Manuel Alejandro, the man behind an incredible number of now classic Latin love songs from the '60s, '70s, and '80s. As for Sola herself, next to nothing is known about the Mexican singer except the occasional whisper heard in only the darkest corners of the annals of music history. It's said that upon growing disillusioned with the music industry she ended up in a convent of Carmelite Sisters. Fitting perhaps, given that Un Muñeco De Madera is a spiritual wonder of a record. Much-loved single and title-track "Un Muñeco De Madera" opens the album. It introduces us to Sola's sparkling Latin-funk, bursting with swaggering grooves sewn by tight drums, sweeping strings and lush keys. It's followed by the serene but melancholic bossa groove of "Oye Mamá, Oye Papá" and the strings and guitar of "He Bajado Al Infierno" that hold up vocals reaching for an eternal truth. With full-on soundtrack-y feels, the rolling keys underpinning the Morricone-esque soundscape of "En Ellos Creo" will give you goosebumps. The gorgeous "Soy Rebelde" ("I'm Rebellious"), sets its gentle, piano-led delivery in delicate contrast to the lyrical sentiment. Perhaps Sola's most well-known track, the exotic bossa of "Tabu, Tabu", is a formidable groove. Elegant bongos, prominent bass, delicate acoustics, and a persistent flute blend with Sola's unique voice; sinuous, sassy, and forceful at the same time. The stunning "La Última Palabra", while not literally the album's last word, is nevertheless a stirring statement of strutting Latin soul, with more musical ideas packed into this one song than the entirety of most long-players. If you hadn't decided already, the final two tracks that are the funk-fueled "Bada-Bada-Ba" and the horn-heavy percussive masterclass "Únete A Mi" will leave you in no doubt that this is one very special record. Mastered by Simon Francis, cut by Pete Norman. Remastered from the original tapes.

RICHFORD & GARY STEVAN, JAY Feelings LP
Repressed! Be With Records present a reissue of Jay Richford and Gary Stevan's Feelings, originally released in 1974. Since its original release on Italian label Carosello in 1974, Richford and Stevan's Feelings has been described as the greatest library record ever released more than once. It's a tough funk, street jazz masterpiece coveted for many years by collectors of all musical genres. As the story goes, these were the pseudonyms adopted by Stefano Torossi and Giancarlo Gazzani who wrote the album but couldn't use their real names on the original release for legal reasons. But Torossi himself later both clarified and confused the tale further by explaining that fellow composers and musicians Sandro Brugnolini and Puccio Roelens also worked on Feelings. Infectiously funky, deliciously melodic and with impeccable, elegant production, Feelings record is the showcase for a stunning set of compositions and arrangements and with performances that are nothing short of virtuoso. The record's first side lifts off with "Flying High", soaring brilliant and shimmering with funk licks, menacing strings, and swaggering horns. The string-drenched cop-funk of "Going Home" raises the tempo with quick-fire bass lines and killer electric guitar. "Walking In The Dark" positively drips in blaxploitation-funk drama strings and horn struts, all laced with delicate drums, velvet piano, and more filthy wah-wah. "Fighting For Life" is another funk-fueled workout built around an effortlessly relentless drum track. The loping, open drum break that guides the much-loved "Feeling Tense" is filled out by heavy bass gloss, swirling strings, and ominous horns. "Running Fast" is a fine rollicking chase theme underpinned by frenetic (yet funky) Fender Rhodes and skipping bass and drums. "Loving Tenderly" envelops you in warm, velvety night-time vibes with easy listening horns and slinky strings. The pace picks up on the electrifying "Fearing Much" where strings dart around deep bass, buzzing guitars, and another funky drum break. The lush, melancholic "Being Friendly" is another easy beauty, all warm Rhodes and strings. The climactic "Having Fun" rides a pulsating, bass-heavy drum break with snatches of a funky guitar refrain, some luxurious keys, sweeping strings, and triumphant horns. Groove-laden bass, irrepressible horns, sweet flute lines, warm Rhodes, lush string arrangements, blaxploitation-styled wah-wah guitars and more make Feelings one of the finest instrumental soul LPs of the '70s, if not of all time. Remastered for vinyl by Simon Francis and cut by Pete Norman. Remastered from the original tapes.

MORRICONE, ENNIO Vamos A Matar Companeros CD
Beat Record reissue on CD this original soundtrack from the western movie Vamos A Matar Compañeros (aka Compañeros) directed in 1970 by Sergio Corbucci, starring Franco Nero, Tomas Milian, Jack Palance, Fernando Rey, Iris Berben, José Bódalo, Eduardo Fajardo, Karin Schubert, Gérard Tichy, Gino Pernice, Claudio Scarchilli, Álvaro de Luna and Jesús Fernández. Ennio Morricone wrote fabulous music scores for the revolutionary Western genre, including films such as Tepepa, La resa dei conti, and Il mercenario. Certainly, Vamos A Matar Compañeros remains one of his fans' favorite works, where the harmonica by Franco De Gemini, Alessandroni's whistle and the Cantori Moderni choir play the lion's share. In 1970, a single was released with the themes "Vamos A Matar Compañeros" (with lyrics by Bruno Corbucci) and "Il pinguino". The main theme, "Vamos A Matar Compañeros", with its revolutionary flavor, is a cheerful, rhythmic piece with choir and the intervention of harmonica, organ and tolling bell that is frequently repeated throughout the soundtrack. Another recurring theme is the light-hearted "Il pinguino" motif for whistle, harmonica, banjo and orchestra, while "La Mexicana" is a nostalgic motif with harmonica and orchestra. The mystical theme of "La Loro Patria" with its revolutionary flavor returns to the soundtrack with guitar and strings. The tension of the story is provided by dramatic, almost atonal themes such as "Un Uomo In Agguato" and "Cecchino". There is also the obligatory saloon music, according to the tradition of the genre. Beat Records reissues on the market this masterpiece by Ennio Morricone for the Italian Western using the stereo masters of the original recording sessions, with a total duration of 63 minutes. Mastering by Claudio Fuiano. liner notes by Daniel Winkler. Graphic layout by Daniele De Gemini. Includes 12-page booklet.

MORRICONE, ENNIO Il Mio Nome E' Nessuno CD
Beat Records reissue on CD the Ennio Morricone score for the cult western Il Mio Nome E' Nessuno (My name is nobody) directed in 1973 by Tonino Valerii, starring Terence Hill, Henry Fonda, Leo Gordon, Jean Martin, Geoffrey Lewis, Piero Lulli, Benito Stefanelli, RG Armstrong, Alexander Allerson, Franco Angrisano, Mario Brega, Marc Mazza, Remus Peets, Antoine Saint John. Ennio Morricone composed one of the most loved scores from his fans around the world using elements typical of his genius such as the whistle of Alessandro Alessandroni, the voice of Edda Dell'Orso (and many other highly valued soloists) mixed with some sonic innovations as in "Mucchio Selvaggio", where the composer even ventures to include Wagner's La Cavalcata delle Valkyrie. This CD was made using the stereo mono masters of the original session with the total duration just over 74 minutes. Mastering by Claudio Fuiano. Liner notes by Andrea Morandi. In Beat Records' "DDJ" series, dedicated to funky cinema sounds, the label present on CD the previously-unreleased score for the episodic movie directed by Domenico Paolella in 1979, Belli E Brutti Ridono Tutti. The pen behind the soundtrack belongs to a maestro very dear to Beat Records, Giacomo Dell'Orso, husband of the divine Edda and a fine musician, orchestra conductor and arranger for his friend, maestro Nico Fidenco. After the main titles featuring a cool rock n' roll tune, there is a score dominated by the disco sound, a vein that exploded worldwide and which sees the prominent voice of Giancarlo Balestram in the end credits over a vibrant rhythmic tapestry. Mastering by Enrico De Gemini, liner notes by Marco Ferretti and graphic layout by Daniele De Gemini. 12-page booklet.

ABRAMS FEATURING MALACHI FAVORS, MUHAL RICHARD Sightsong LP
Reissue. Originally released in 1976. "The reputation of members of the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians), of which Abrams is a founding member, has long been one of adventurous, dangerous, and difficult music. But in fact, much of the music created out of this organization shows enormous appreciation of the blues and earlier jazz forms. Sightsong is a splendid case in point. The album opens with four duets (two dedicated to Chicago legends Wilbur Ware and Johnny Griffin) which have a swing, a groove, and a delicacy that no fan of 'straight-ahead' jazz could ignore. Favors, always one of the great underrated bassists in the music, provides a thick, soulful pulse and solos with huge imagination while Abrams always stays within the song's parameters which provide ample room for his creativity. As fine as these more 'traditional' numbers are, the standout piece is perhaps Favors' solo feature, the wonderfully titled 'Way Way Way Down Yonder.' Opening with what sounds like the riffled pages of a book, Favors then states the deep, bluesy theme with strutting authority and proceeds through one of the richest investigations of the string bass the listener is ever likely to hear. Sightsong is one of Abrams's finest recordings and is also perhaps the best showcase for Malachi Favors' talents outside of his seminal work with the Art Ensemble of Chicago."

Toyan began his career in 1974, deejaying on Kingston's sound systems, such as Socialist Roots and Romantic HiFi. He recorded his debut single, 'Disco Pants' in the late 1970s for producer Don Mais. He went on to work extensively with Joseph Hoo Kim and Jah Thomas, resulting in a string of hits including 'Girls Nowadays', 'Kill No Man', 'John Tom', and 'Talk of the Town', as well as combination hits with The Mighty Diamonds ('Pretty Woman'), Badoo ('Rocking the 5000'), and Freddie McGregor ('Roots Man Skanking'). In 1981 he joined Henry 'Junjo' Lawes' Volcano Sound system, and toured Canada. "Debut solo album from the Black Slate singer originally released in 1979. Now released on 180 gram vinyl. Red Hot Dub, originally released in 1979 through West London's Burning Sounds label and credited to Elroy Bailey, is a superior dub-based collection that showcases subtle, masterful musicianship rather than electronic pyrotechnics and studio trickery. The album provides a perfect example of just how far UK reggae had progressed by that time and that the children of the Jamaican diaspora, together with a multitude of musical accomplices, could now stand shoulder to shoulder with their Kingston counterparts."

FALL, THE Live At St. Helens Technical College 1981 LP + 7"
Repressed. "I've had the pleasure of being a [The] Fall fan since I was a teen. I was lucky enough to have some guidance from my local record shop stoner-lords. They turned me on to many of my heroes, but once I heard my first slanted and barky Fall song, I was part of the army for life. The word prolific gets tossed around a lot. It almost seems like a slag-off in the press, as if they wish the artist would produce less so they wouldn't have to do their self-imposed job of judging releases for the rabble. The Fall is subjected to this lazy word often. Yet I can honestly say that I am so thankful for any nugget of Fall that lands at my feet and in my brain. Live Fall performances are always a pleasure because they seem to take what already made the Fall great and push it even a bit more into the rough and bloody uncharted wasteland that is drug scorched proto-punk and heady political poetry. So, it is with great pleasure that we introduce this Fall bootleg soundboard recording to you. Recorded during one of the many strong points in the bands vast and mighty history. They really burn bright here and bring every ounce of what you expect from this formidable force. We have reached out to every surviving member of the band, the sound person, the bootlegger who recorded it and the photographer and received their blessings and help piecing it all together. Castle Face will be donating 50% of our profits to Centrepoint, which helps the homeless in the Manchester area get back on their feet, so the local and deserving Fall fans get a little, and give a little back, too. Nothing but the hits here folks and as raw as you dig it. This one really is exceptional in terms of live sound for The Fall. All the stars were aligned over St. Helens that eve. And it wouldn't be complete with a bit of Fall fan saltiness so, fuck you too, Jason." --John Dwyer

"Nuova Civiltà" suite, certainly one of his best-known compositions, often also interpreted by Gerry Mulligan, deeply combines blues and tradition, adhering to the most radical trends of the music scene. A challenge to established formal and expressive schemes. MUSSIDA, SANDRO Decay Music n. 3: Rueben LP
Riding the razor's edge between rigorous experimentation, innovation, and tradition, London based, Italian composer, cellist, and electronic performer, Sandro Mussida, joins the Die Schachtel family with Rueben, his third solo LP. Active since the early 2000s, Sandro Mussida worked extensively with Mark Fell, Curl Collective, Lorenzo Senni, Oren Ambarchi, and Alessandra Novaga, among others, as well as a founding member of the interdisciplinary artists' group TQS Collective, before releasing his solo debut, Ventuno Costellazioni Invisibili, on Metrica in 2017 (MTR 001LP), followed by Eeeooosss, released by Soave in 2019 (GRA 005LP). Rueben, like its predecessor, deploys a microtonal vocabulary within a three-instrument sound palette and builds upon Mussida's long-standing investigations of active listening, augmented by a developing practice that challenges aural perceptions of historical, non-equal-tempered tuning systems. The third instalment of Die Schachtel's Decay Music series -- launched to highlight inspired contemporary experimental efforts in the ambient, ethereal, and emotively abstract music -- Rueben was recorded during 2018 in the church of St.Giusto in Volterra, Italy. Deeply inspired by Italian Renaissance paintings encountered by Mussida during the work's composition, and conceived at the intersection of acoustic and electronic aural fields, in careful response to the space itself, the sounds of electric guitar, bass clarinet, and cello -- treated as minuscule sound atoms, rapidly projected to form structures of evolving densities -- harmoniously enter into dialogue, forming a multi-layered, contemplative sonic landscape, within the interwoven complexity of their own reflections. Across the length of Rueben, bound to the work's inspiration in the visual realm, the interplay between the senses blur, presenting the act of listening as a mirror for the experience and legacies of seeing. In Mussida's hands, sound emerges as a trace or memory suspended in a non-linear conception of time, where imprint, movement, and event, as they relate to place and happening, are perceived by the ear, recalling the Russian theologian Pavel Florenskij's idea of "reverse time", that likens temporal condition activated by experiences with art as similar to that of dreams. Vast in scope and intricate detail, the nine discrete compositions that form Rueben unfold in a series of interconnected, shimmering landscapes of tone and texture, each, through the interplay of their elements, configuring a radically dense rendering of minimalist, ambient music that challenge the perceived boundaries of those historical definitions. An inspired and radically forward-thinking realization of electro-acoustic music. Cover features an original Sumi-e painting by Japanese artist and avant rock drummer Akihide Monna (Bo Ningen). 180 gram marble vinyl; one-time edition of 250.

DI DOMENICO, GIOVANNI Decay Music n. 4: Downtown Ethnic Music LP
Binding a deep social and political conscious with rigorous musical experimentation, the Brussels based, Italian pianist, performer, composer, Giovanni Di Domenico, delivers Downtown Ethnic Music, the fourth instalment of Die Schachtel's Decay Music series, focused on inspired contemporary experimental efforts in the ambient, ethereal, and emotively abstract music. Over the last decade or so, Giovanni Di Domenico has carved a deep path through a diverse number of discrete fields within experimental music, working in various ensembles -- Abschattungen, AufHeben, Bonjintan, Cement Shoes, Delivery Health, Going, etc. -- as well as producing a discography of critically heralded solo efforts, and intimate collaborations with Jim O'Rourke, Tatsuhisa Yamamoto, Akira Sakata, Arve Henriksen, Tatsuhisa Yamamoto, Alexandra Grimal, Nate Wooley, Chris Corsano, and others. Downtown Ethnic Music encounters Di Domenico reimagining the future of urban music, pluming the mysterious and emotive depths of self, to arrive at vision of sonorous utopia, radically divergent from those of the past. Hybridizing numerous forms of musical practice, while making a conceptual nod to Jon Hassell's notion of the "fourth world", as well as the cross-temporal transnationalism of Roberto Musci, Aktuala, Futuro Antico, and the Third Ear Band, Di Domenico's vision of democracy -- rendered through the creative metaphors of sound -- is a true to life, bristling conflict, as open-ended as it is ordered, and as dramatic and tense as it is beautiful, playful, and refined. A colorful tapestry of ideas, experiences, histories, and reference points, woven from a pallet of electronics, synthesis, and various acoustic sources -- the intervening rhythms of drummer João Lobo, vocals by Pak Yan Lau and Patshiva CIE women choir, the horns of Ananta Roosens and Jordi Grognard etc. -- across the length of Downtown Ethnic Music, the boundaries between idiom, expressive concept, collective, and individual blur, giving way to a visionary, forward-thinking rendering of electroacoustic music, that subtly reminds us of the social and political potential of art. Seamlessly incorporating bubbling electronic abstraction, sprawling ambience and long tones, throbbing kosmische, acoustic free improvisation, and the human voice, Giovanni Di Domenico's Downtown Ethnic Music represents a high-water mark in an already astounding career. 180 gram marble vinyl; one-time edition of 250.

NURSE WITH WOUND Sylvie & Babs PIC. DISC
Sylvie & Babs as a picture disc LP, with new Babs Santini artwork. Originally released in 1985. Was it always supposed to be this way? Who knows? But it won't be around for long. One pressing and that's it, buy or die -- you know the drill. "Sylvie & Babs is one of the most memorable, playful, and fascinating albums in the NWW oeuvre (though a decidedly unrepresentative one) ... few (if any) other artists could've woven capricious contrarianism, low humor, bad puns, endless non-sequiturs, and chaos into such a satisfying whole" --Anthony D'Amico.

SULLIVAN'S BJORKESTRA, TRAVIS Hyperballad / Venus As A Boy 12"
"Travis Sullivan's Björkestra is a genre-bending jazz orchestra that interprets the music of Bjork Gudmundsdottir, one of the most influential pop artists of the past 25 years. The Björkestra transcends the boundaries of popular music and modern jazz while mesmerizing audiences with its engaging blend of improvisation, brilliant arrangements, and danceable grooves. Whether you are a fan of Bjork or jazz, the Björkestra offers something for anyone interested in listening to innovative, creative music while having fun in the process. Travis Sullivan employs traditional big band instrumentation augmented by vocals and a laptop. A live Björkestra show is a unique listening experience that impacts both the sonic and visual senses as they pay homage to the music of Bjork through invention, not imitation. The Björkestra has performed throughout the world at notable venues such as the Montreal International Jazz Festival (Canada), the SF Jazz Festival (USA), the Blue Note NYC, the Jarasum Jazz Festival (South Korea), Aperitivo in Concerto (Italy). The ensemble has also featured special guest jazz artists such as trumpet player Dave Douglas, tenor saxophonist Donny McCaslin, and guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel." "It was 2007 when the big band in N.Y. first covered Bjork's classic 'Hyperballad'. In 2012, the band released a live album with the talented Becca Stevens on vocals. I've been playing a dubplate of the live CD recordings for a while, and now I've been able to fulfill my wish and release it on vinyl for the first time in the world. Two of the strongest tracks from the album which are perfect for club playing are included. The dynamic groove of the big band and the contradictory cool world are mixed. A must-listen for jazz, Brit-funk, and house crossover fans. I hope this will be the most talked-about album of the year." --Tatsuo Sunaga

Discos Monterey present a reissue of Gerardo Manuel & Humo's Machu Picchu 2000, originally released in 1971. Gerardo Manuel left behind his deepest beat days with The Dolton's and The Shain's, plus his garage psych stage with St Thomas Pepper Smelter. At the beginning of the '70s he was joined by a new band formed by other illustrious Peruvian musicians, called El Humo because, according to Ernesto Samamé (We All Together) they met to play unpretentiously, to test the new sound equipment of the Virrey label. The first of the albums was Apocallipsis (1970). It was followed in 1971 by the conceptual Machu Picchu 2000 in which he used all his imagination to tell about the resurgence of the Inca empire after the third world war that broke out at half past five on December 31, 1999. Songs of lysergic melodies, with Latin touches, give life to this album that looks for peace in the world. Unique and memorable albums, essential for any discography with the best of South American music from the '60s. 180 gram vinyl; gatefold sleeve.

STIFF RICHARDS State Of Mind LP
"First things first -- you don't need me to tell you about the significance of Australia in the history of punk. I mean, what am I, Jon Savage? Google it yourself, FFS. Instead, let's just agree that the speedy, feral racket thrown together by the likes of The Saints, Radio Birdman and The Scientists in the mid-late '70s is at least as deliriously entertaining as anything concocted by their UK/US counterparts, sowing the seeds for seemingly endless garage-inflected noisemakers in the land down under. No one likes using words like 'tradition' or 'heritage' here -- the punk rock clusterbomb is far too messy for any of that business -- but also emerging from Australian rock's primordial soup is the addictive sneer of Stiff Richards. Like their predecessors, the band are a gleefully wracked mess of full throttle energy and barreling power chords, with songs like 'Kids Out On The Grass' and 'Point of You' proving at least the equal of '(I'm) Stranded' or 'Aloha Steve And Danno'. Nine tracks in less than 30 minutes, all winners and all determined to leave you flipping over couches and smashing your TV set. And let's face it, you may as well; there's nothing good on. It all builds towards frantic closer 'Fill In The Blanks', which rattles around your speakers like the UK Subs trying to play Ed Kuepper riffs at the center of an earthquake, before grinding to a halt as a voice says, 'That's the one.' Does it sound self-satisfied? Hey, it's got good reason to -- this is the best no-frills garage rock party since Gino & The Goons' Do The Get Around, and the only appropriate response is to declare yourself betrothed to Stiff Richards because you can't imagine your life without 'em. Don't believe me? Sort out your ears and get 'State Of Mind' in 'em. Rock'n'roll as it's supposed to be played." --Will Fitzpatrick

RODEN, STEVE I Listen To The Wind That Obliterates My Traces 2CD/BOOK
2021 restock. Subtitled: Music In Vernacular Photographs, 1880-1955. I Listen To The Wind That Obliterates My Traces brings together a collection of early photographs related to music, a group of 78rpm recordings, and short excerpts from various literary sources that are contemporary with the sound and images. It is a somewhat intuitive gathering, culled from artist Steve Roden's collection of thousands of vernacular photographs related to music, sound, and listening. The subjects range from the PT Barnum-esque Professor McRea -- "Ontario's Musical Wonder" (pictured with his complex sculptural one-man band contraption) -- to anonymous African-American guitar players and images of early phonographs. The images range from professional portraits to ethereal, accidental, double exposures -- and include a range of photographic print processes, such as tintypes, ambrotypes, CDVS, cabinet cards, real photo postcards, albumen prints, and turn-of-the-century snapshots. The two CDs bring together a variety of recordings, including one-off amateur recordings, regular commercial releases, and early sound effects records. There is no narrative structure to the book, but the collision of literary quotes (Hamsun, Lagarkvist, Wordsworth, Nabokov, etc.). Recordings and images conspire towards a consistent mood that is anchored by the book's title, which binds such disparate things as an early recording of an American cowboy ballad, a poem by a Swedish Nobel Laureate, a recording of crickets created artificially, and an image of an itinerant anonymous woman sitting in a field, playing a guitar. The book also contains an essay by Roden. Hardback book, 8.5 x 6.5 inches, 184 pages, 150 photographs reproduced in full color and two audio CDs from the author's collection.

HECKER Synopsis Seriation 2CD
What you hear in Synopsis Seriation, Hecker's latest album with Editions Mego, draws upon current research in machine listening and music information retrieval, where the "ghosts in the machine" are unsupervised convolutional operators designed to extract auditory features from a signal. Experimental deployment of these virtual listening agents has only just begun, and Synopsis Seriation advances a general research program Hecker initiated through a series of publications, performances and installations since 2013. In A Script for Machine Synthesis (EMEGO 226CD, 2017), the third chapter in the trilogy of text-sound pieces in collaboration with the philosopher Reza Negarestani, both a resynthesized and a computer-generated voice modelled after the narrators's voice, reflecting on systems of language, automatons and chimerized synthesis. Articulação Sintetico (2017) -- a complete resynthesis of Hecker's album Articulação (EMEGO 180CD, 2014) -- features synthetic voice models of Joan La Barbara, Sugata Bose and Anna Kohler. Central to Inspection II (EMEGO 268CD, 2019) is a bespoke computer-generated voice, reciting Robin Mackay's libretto -- by means of deep neural networks and machine listening computation, perpetually crossing formal anticipations of sound analysis to the unexpected artefacts of synthesis. Synopsis Seriation does away with such staging of computer-generated speech. It dramatizes synthetic sound in all its unnamable intensities and detail by transforming four multichannel pieces Hecker produced since 2015. These have been analyzed, dissected and reconstructed utilizing information geometry, a subfield of mathematics at the interaction between statistics and differential geometry, designed by Vincent Lostanlen. His scientific work is at the forefront of the movement of computational auditory analysis out of the frequency domain model toward a more complex understanding of the auditory landscape and perceptual processing. Written and produced by Florian Hecker, 2015-2020. Information geometry and sound computation by Vincent Lostanlen. Mastering by Rashad Becker.

XORDOX Omniverse CD
Throughout his vast career, the New York based Australian composer JG Thirlwell has adopted many masks as a means of infiltrating and subsequently subverting a wide range of pop cultural forms. His work under the Foetus moniker has taken on everything from big band to opera to noise-rock. Steroid Maximus embraced exotica and the world of soundtracks, while his Manorexia project continued his quest to the outer limits of contemporary composition and musique concrete. Thirlwell has also carved out a significant output in the field of the soundtrack via the large body of work created for the animated television shows Archer and The Venture Bros. In addition, he has been commissioned to create compositions by such notables as Kronos Quartet, Bang On A Can, Alarm Will Sound, String Orchestra of Brooklyn, and many others. Now we have Omniverse, the second release under the moniker Xordox. Xordox is a synthesizer-based project, and on this evocative album you see the project branch into many new avenues. The science fiction element brushes up against crime noir, even veering into areas that could well fit in the video game soundtrack genre. With an audacious attitude and an arsenal of machines Thirlwell serves up a selection of thrilling retro-future mind capsules. This is music made from a life saturated in culture, both underground and mainstream, high and low. Tense sequencing and noir-tinged keyboard lines invoke a powerful visual image of films and memory, of screens and speakers, of sound and space, all entering the cosmos and the subsequent galactic race. Thirlwell's decades long exploration of sampling and sequencing, composing and ingesting a daunting amount of audio and visual artworks speaks volumes for the bold assimilations exposed here. "Between Dimensions" lays out a tense theme which starts off like a score to a crime thriller before morphing into a simulacrum of Kraftwerk scoring a video game. The living ghosts of Giorgio Moroder and John Carpenter haunt "Oil Slick" as it permeates wormholes, updating lifeforms with its stealth sequencing and tense momentum. Omniverse is a synthesized soundtrack journey, one which embraces past forms whilst reshaping them for the new unknown. Omniverse is a thrilling liquid ride through fear and hope, and like all the best of Thirlwell's output, is simply one hell of an enjoyable journey to take.

AUVINEN Akkosaari LP
Johannes Auvinen has been a one-man acid king for over a decade producing a wealth of acid and acid house under the moniker Tin Man. For this new release on Editions Mego, he navigates an entirely different zone. Drawing on the history of electronic music, Akkosaari is a transcendental journey far from the sensual frenzy of sweaty acid drenched dancefloors we are accustomed to with his work. Akkosaari lies in the middle of the kosmic komische of Ash Ra Temple's "Jenseits", the weightless transcendentalism of Eliane Radigue's Trilogie De Morts, and the more glacial output of the Sähkö catalogue. The pace is gentle as the listener is drawn further into a world unlike the one we inhabit, these machines are more second life than one's emulating real life. The fantastic potential for audio induced visions are at play in this adventure in music as mind travel. On "Kyläläiset Tanssii" a measured pulse acts as a means of navigation before "Susi" spirals out clouds of sound. By the time you get to "Kelluminen" you are deeply within an unfamiliar state prior to landing in the heavenly plateau of "Akkosaari". Throughout Akkosaari, you are bathed in enrapturing and enveloping mists of psychedelic haze which take the listener on a vivid mental journey. This is intoxicating head music unfolding like an astral ascension and like any trip warrants repeat visitation. Composed by Auvinen. Mastered by Denis Blackham at Skye Mastering, June 2020. Cut by Andreas Kauffelt at Schnitstelle, Berlin, June 2020.

RIVET On Feather and Wire 2LP
Swedish producer and electronic enthusiast Rivet (Mika Hallbäck Vuorenpää, Malmö) joins the Editions Mego fold with a dynamic and diverse album that pivots between the punctuated pop of Ivan Pavlov's COH project, the chromatic slink of Chris and Cosey whilst also bearing a degree of fruit birthed from Hallbäck's home country Sweden in skewered pop such as The Knife. This is electronic music born from the worship of machines and the spirit of punk, mood music brooding with sophistication and subversive twists all underscored with a deep industrial pulse. Are these songs? Are these lyrics? Words melt as beat perpetually takes us deeper into flight. Interpretation is flung open as the audience are invited to gauge what on earth is going on here. Are "Sooty Wing Flecks" a minuscule species of half keyboard half vocoder chatter? Is "Gleitende Liebe" to be trusted or simply laying out a guide for disorientation? "Pearling Woes" is a queasy ballad sung by a robot on a very special comedown. "Keloid" knows exactly where the party can be now whereas Sodden Healer is an uber ride sans mask to destinations dark and unknown. Throughout this trip sharp snares punctuate ghost melodies as vocals rise and vaporize. Shadows hover the walls leaving holographic traces of the duality between fun and fear, the unexpected drifts diagonally across the audio plane teasing and taunting the listener in a unique blend of industrial, techno, pop, and experimental forms. On Feather and Wire is a deep absorbing trip through multiple moods, genres, and guises, as mysterious as it is engaging and one to ingest in a single sitting, lying back, sitting up, standing up and yes, even dancing. Let the angels and angles, the voices and distorted faces take shape before your mind. Who is "Ordine Kadmia"? What are they saying to me, here we go, on and on... With its haunted vocals, coded linguistics, and dark sensual propulsive atmosphere, On Feather and Wire is a sublime contemporary techno pop trip both psychedelic and subversive. Images by Dimitrios Bizios; Artwork by Nik Void. Written and produced by Mika Hallbäck Vuorenpää; Post-production by Mika Hallbäck Vuorenpää and Benny Liberg at Inkonst Studio Malmö; Mixed by Oscar Mulero at Dead Souls Studio Gijón; Mastered by Stephan Mathieu.

SCHNEIDER TM The 8 Of Space CD
Schneider TM is the multidimensional music project of Dirk Dresselhaus which has been operating since the mid '90s. His latest opus is also his first for release for Editions Mego. With an extensive catalogue under his belt, one may wonder where this one takes us" The 8 Of Space orbits the realm of "pop" more overtly than the project has done for 14 years, residing in the line of works that temporarily ended with Skoda Mluvit from 2006. In the age of scattered streaming listening habits, The 8 Of Space champions the classic album format with connected tracks that act like chapters adding up to what could be framed as an "audio-movie". The "plot" revolves around a post-dystopian landscape which posits the make-up of reality in the future. The vessel is electronic pop music but one which takes inspiration from the spirit of a multitude of musical forms absorbed into a trans human sound world where biological and technological elements complement each other (We are NOT The Robots!). The music unifies the analog world of acoustic and electric instruments with electronic and digital possibilities that range from heavily processed acoustic and electric guitars and bass, tube organ, analog modular synth units, acoustic drums and percussion, analog and digital drum machines and effect units, hardware and software processing. Generative music, audio spirals like clockworks create ever changing musical combinations; thrown-in sounds, polyrhythms and cascades based on the concept of chance attributed to the service of the song. The lyrics are a key component. Holistic, associative poetry acts as interactive trigger points for the mechanisms of existence in times of a paradigm shift that are open to the listeners discretion. Autobiographical elements combine with science fiction and dreams, protagonists shift where the "I" or "me" is not necessarily the voice of the artist, nor even the same person. Alongside a more naturalized voice another protagonist appears represented by a processed voice. This character, named iBot, evolved around the start of the millennium and has appeared on some previous Schneider TM recordings. All the elements on The 8 Of Space, the music, sounds, vocals and artwork fit together as a whole, creating a dazzling electro pop future questioning it's own certainty. This is experimental electroacoustic pop music featuring glorious melodies dancing along human/machine voices, each track is a small universe that triggers the physical mind and tickles the subconsciousness.

CROMAGNON Cave Rock LP
2021 restock; originally released in 1969. Also known as Orgasm, this 1969 album has long been hailed as an underground classic. Included in Spin's 2013 list "The Top 100 Alternative Albums of the 1960s." Finally available again on vinyl in an ESP-Disk' 50th Anniversary Remaster version. "Two frustrated pop songwriters and the mysterious seven-person 'Connecticut Tribe' hole up in an Upper West Side studio and yell and moan and convulse until they discover a place more primordial than hardcore. The lone album from Cromagnon is true body music -- mostly a primal outpouring of wet swallows, warm gulps, creepy whispers, and glottal jungle animal noises; the feral yowls of sex, pain, or warfare -- but also occasionally grabbing people in the hallways to bang broomsticks on plywood. Its seven-minute bouts of throat'n'throttle anticipate the howl-and-hertz of power electronics and the full-contact gargle of '90s Japanese noise. But Orgasm's real claim to fame will always be opening track 'Caledonia,' a throbbing bagpipe-and-trash junkyard clangbanger that anticipates Einstürzende Neubauten, Nine Inch Nails, and Ministry in four raspy, thudding minutes" --Christopher R. Weingarten, Spin, "The Top 100 Alternative Albums of the 1960s." "An aural stew of experimental vocal sounds (tribal chanting, eerie whispering, animal-like screeching, monster sounding growls, ghostly howls, outright screaming, violent puking sounds, etc), various effects (over-dubbed sound bites played backwards, old sirens, common household sounds, manipulated electronics, field recordings) and the occasional use of a conventional instrument (spooky bagpipes, frantic rhythm guitar, scratchy fiddle) that are all meshed and held together with various forms of primitive percussion. A couple tracks have no rhythm instruments and are simply gravity defying acts of freeform music. Surprisingly, after being subjected to over 30 minutes of unintelligible voices, Cromagnon finally reap the benefits of evolution and use coherent words from the English language on the final two songs on the album. Cromagnon is ominous and experimental tribal music for the bad acid trip" --J. Scott Brubig, The Acid Archives. This is one of the most influential groups in jazz history, a coming together of like-minded innovators who would be considered crucial influences by succeeding generations, so there is no question of the immense value of this material. LAST EXIT Iron Path LP
2021 restock; LP version. All-star quartet Last Exit garnered its reputation with a string of unrelentingly forceful concert recordings in which it pushed the energy style of free jazz to its limits. When the group went into the studio, though, a very different sort of album emerged -- very different not only from all their other output, but even from anything else ever heard from anyone at that time. Because of that, when it was released in 1988, some fans and critics didn't know what to make of it. This was, in a way, understandable, because Iron Path was so far ahead of its time that perhaps only a quarter of a century later, in 2015, is there an audience prepared for this album's pioneering hybrid of abstract heavy metal, unsettling ambient music, and free improvisation. Back in 1988, "darkwave" hadn't yet been conceived, much less named and niched. The brutal sonic assault of Last Exit's live albums is not banished; it lurks below the surface on Iron Path, sometimes allowed to break through for a moment of stark contrast. But the unremitting density of texture heard in the quartet's shows is stripped back in favor of more subtle and varied textures, sculpting an atmosphere of moody brooding and sinister suspense. And, of course, the studio also allowed for far greater sonic clarity, putting these virtuoso players in a setting that shows off their masterful command of myriad timbres. In a world that has since become accustomed to hearing Earth, Pelican, Blut Aus Nord, Aphex Twin's Ambient Works sets, and Oöphoi, and artists such as Whote who explore the overlap between them, Iron Path can finally get its due, and an audience schooled to appreciate what it offers. Sonny Sharrock, guitar; Peter Brötzmann, saxophone; Bill Laswell, bass; Ronald Shannon Jackson, drums.

OCHS & DONALD ROBINSON, LARRY A Civil Right CD
Larry Ochs and Donald Robinson's second and definitive recording will be released on legendary free jazz label ESP-Disk'. Ochs is a founding member of the great ROVA Saxophone Quartet, one of the Bay Area's avant-garde treasures since 1978. Robinson -- "a percussive dervish", according to Coda -- was the drummer of choice for ROVA's revivification of John Coltrane's Ascension. The East Bay Express has said of the saxophonist's sound, "Ochs' full-bodied tenor is out of the John Coltrane/Albert Ayler 'free' tradition: forceful, passionate," while the Chicago Reader said about the drummer and his relationship with Ochs, "Robinson is neither flashy nor explosive, but his playing has heft and he covers lots of ground -- he can maintain a feeling of order while playing meter-less rhythms or transform the pulse of jagged post-bop until it's almost abstract. He's a good match for Ochs, and over the decades the two of them have developed a fine-tuned rapport." Although Ochs and Robinson have collaborated in various groups for more than 20 years -- including in the trio What We Live with bassist Lisle Ellis -- their duo is a recent phenomenon, having developed over the past couple of years. Ochs says, "Our playing together has evolved to a really special place, I think. We're definitely coming out of the tradition of horn-drum duos from John Coltrane and Rashied Ali to Wadada Leo Smith and Billy Higgins, but we've found our own space after a long stretch of shows together. Our set will include new, original material, with some high-energy playing and things that are more spatial, as well as some homages to more popular music. In a sparse setting like this, the music hits a listener right away -- nothing is obscured, everything is clear." Ochs and Robinson first performed together from 1991 to 1998 in The Glenn Spearman Double Trio. From 1994 to 2002, they worked in the trio What We Live. From 2000 until 2010 Robinson was part of the Larry Ochs Sax & Drumming Core featuring drummer Scott Amendola, as well as Satoko Fujii and Natsuki Tamura from 2007 to 2010. Throughout all this time, Ochs and Robinson jammed and rehearsed in Robinson's studio, easily done as they live only 15 minutes apart. Thus it seemed inevitable that they would -- eventually -- create a special repertoire for this duo. Personnel: Larry Ochs - saxophones; Donald Robinson - drums.

BISIO/KIRK KNUFFKE/FRED LONBERG-HOLM, MICHAEL The Art Spirit CD
This music is inspired by Robert Henri (June 24, 1865 - July 12, 1929) artist, teacher, writer and an organizer of the group known as The Eight, a loose association of artists who protested the restrictive exhibition practices of the powerful, conservative National Academy of Design. Personnel: Michael Bisio - bass; Kirk Knuffke - cornet and soprano cornet; Fred Lonberg-Holm - cello/electronics. Recorded September 24, 2018 by Eli Winograd at Lone Pine Road, Kingston NY.On the trio's last record, Requiem for a New York Slice (Iluso, 2019):"It is hard to find three more expressive musicians. Bisio being one of just a few bassists that can match the energy of Matthew Shipp. Lonberg-Holm's cello can be heard on over 300 recordings, with heavyweights such as Peter Brötzmann, Ken Vandermark, and Joe McPhee, and Knuffke maybe (no, is) the most expressive cornetist working today. That expression is dialed to max on 'Sanctus' where the cornetist makes a joyful noise over a pair of bowing accompanists. ... 'In Paradisum' might be the saddest and most beautiful piece on this recording. Bisio opens with huge reverberating pulled notes while Knuffke squeezes upper register tones before Lonberg-Holm's cello slices skidding notes across the bandstand. Halfway through the music pauses as if to reflect on the loss, then bows are applied as tears are shed." --Mark Corroto, All About Jazz"Jazz is the music of pure emotion, and it's the vehicle by which Bisio, Knuffke and Lonberg-Holm sorted out their feelings about this tragedy. As improvisation artists of the highest order, they already treat every performance as a requiem of some sort but there's an extra impetus this time, and it shows up masterfully in these five group improvised performances." --S. Victor Aaron, Something Else Reviews"... creative music that often sounds more indebted to hair-raising chamber music and Arnold Schoenberg than jazz improvisation." --Capitol Bop

BAKER, DUCK Confabulations CD
In his five-decade career, finger-style acoustic guitarist Duck Baker has played in lots of styles, from folk (real folk, such as Scottish and Irish fiddle tunes) to blues to jazz, in the latter genre particularly focusing on bebop greats, with whole albums devoted to the music of Thelonious Monk and Herbie Nichols. But he has flashed an avant-garde side as well, and of course ESP-Disk' was interested in exposing more of the latter work. This album of duos and trios with an all-star roster of players, mostly British, collects recordings ranging from 1994 through 2017.Personnel: Duck Baker - guitar; Derek Bailey - guitar on "Indie Pen Dance" (2002); Steve Beresford - piano on "Duo for 225 strings" (2009)' John Butcher - tenor saxophone on "The Missing Chandler" (2009); Mark Dresser bass on "Shenandoah" and "Pope Slark" (1994); Michael Moore - alto saxophone on "Imp Romp 2" (2008); Roswell Rudd - trombone on "East River Delta Blues" and "Signing Off" (2002); Alex Ward - clarinet and Joe Williamson - bass on "Ode to Jo" (2010); John Edwards - bass and Steve Noble - drums "Tourbillion Air" (2017).

DRAMAS DRAMAS LP
The next big thing is now within reach. DRAMAS release their epic second self-titled album, on which the duo once again takes a big step further and explores boundaries. DRAMAS skillfully master the art of the in-between: between a heavy heart and the knowledge that everything changes, that nothing stands still. The art pop duo, founded in 2016, presented a great and emotional debut with their album Nothing Is Permanent, released in 2018, and landed indie airplay hits across Europe with several single releases from it. Thus Viktoria Winter and Mario Wienerroither -- who not only thrills an audience of millions worldwide with his "Musicless Music Videos" on YouTube and even became a BBC award winner -- also made a name for themselves as a live band. DRAMAS have already convinced their growing fan base at various festivals or as top-class tour support for the British shooting star Cosmo Sheldrake. The fact that DRAMAS can also be counted on internationally in the long term was underlined by the duo with their new singles "Undercover Dreamer" and "Bloodbath", which were released in the pandemic year 2020 and attracted attention throughout Europe and even on the British Isles. Driven by the fascination of unconscious opposites and contradictions, Viktoria Winter and Mario Wienerroither wrap heavy and oppressive contents into reduced, deeply moving music. "What's so heavy on this mind?," DRAMAS once asked in the song "Libra" and still celebrate the coexistence of these opposites with their very own musical sound. Cinematic synthesizer, drum and piano sounds merge with Viktoria Winter's unmistakable voice to form a great whole. Features Radiotapes.

MAGIC TUBER STRINGBAND When Sorrows Encompass Me 'Round Cassette
"Magic Tuber Stringband is Durham NC-based duo, made up of Evan Morgan and Courtney Werner. Their primary instruments are guitar and fiddle, but they are not married to these particular axes and follow their instincts when they feel other instruments are called for. Playing music with its bite rooted in the Piedmont tradition, Magic Tuber mostly write their own material, while exploring and expanding dynamics of string interaction that are as old as the hills. Treading a line that begins in equal parts of blues and Anglo-Scottish lineage, they introduce different motific elements at points. 'Teo's Farewell' has a central portion with a very Middle Eastern feel. 'Wood Thrush Song' is a modernist collage of field recordings and layered violin tones. But mostly, Evan's playing (and occasional singing) mixes traditional and American Primitive approaches with casual surety, and Courtney does the same. As on their first album, Wayward Airs for Earthbound Vagrants (Blue Hole MC), Magic Tuber also display a somewhat Fahey-esque hand with song titles. The first three on this one are 'Quarry Ate the Mountain,' 'Waltz for Things with Wings,' and 'Devil on a Root Monster.' But as good as those titles are, the tunes are better. The vibe reminds me of a pared-down version of Jack Rose's work with the Black Twig Pickers, in the way it manages to keep one foot in the tradition without sounding at all hidebound. Magic Tuber Stringband is a great (and dare I say, joyous) sophomore effort by a most wonderful band. I hope to hear more from them soon, and so will you." -Byron Coley, 2021

JOHNSTON/STEVE GULLICK, JAMES We Travel Time CD
James Johnston (Gallon Drunk, Nick Cave, PJ Harvey) and Steve Gullick (renowned music photographer) announce their new album, We Travel Time. It's a dark but beautiful trip. After working together on an art show in late 2019, the idea of making music again immediately resurfaced. Without any firm strategy, Johnston and Gullick began recording, unprompted, drawing upon a shared love of noise, folk, and classical. After the first tracks began to evolve, however, they knew they'd unearthed something compelling and fresh, not to mention unexpectedly mysterious. This became We Travel Time. The result is a deceptively crafted album that slowly reveals -- and, more importantly, embraces -- beauty in its cracks. Piano, voice, violin, and guitar create a drifting haze, with the focus on these acoustic elements forging an imagined soundtrack which offers echoes of Big Star, Nico, Lee Hazlewood, and Palace Brothers, as well as the gentle, haunting influence of contemporary minimal classical. Ambient sounds -- birds, rain, cars, clocks, distant voices -- also drift in and out, melting into the music's fabric via windows left open during the early 2020 heatwave. We Travel Time, nonetheless, resists definition, remaining enigmatically timeless.

JASON CREST A Place In The Sun LP
A Place In The Sun is a vinyl anthology of Rubble/British Psychedelic Trip cult heroes Jason Crest, including a selection of their classic '68-69 psychedelic singles for Philips ("Turquoise Tandem Cycle", Black Mass", "A Place In The Sun", etc...) plus their unissued at the time studio recordings/demos. The result is a great British late '60s psych album, recommended if you like Tomorrow, Procol Harum, Moody Blues, Small Faces, The Move, The Who, et al. The origins of Jason Crest are in beat band The Good Thing Brigade. Originally from Kent, they made quite a stir in the London club circuit, supporting established groups like The Who and The Moody Blues. No wonder they caught the eye of en vogue producer Fritz Fryer (Open Mind, etc...) who got them a contract with Philips, changing their name to Jason Crest after one of their songs, "The Collected Works of Justin Crest". Between 1968 and 1969, the band released five singles and left behind a bunch of unissued demo recordings/acetates. Jason Crest's music run the gamut from brilliant psych-pop full of wah-wah organ to Mellotron/phasing fueled introspective numbers and even heavy acid-psych/proto-metal on the freaky "Black Mass". Sadly, due to lack of success and problems with the label and between the band members, the band split after releasing their last 45 in 1969. Vocalist Terry Clark joined hard-rock band Orang-Utan, whilst the remaining members formed High Broom (featuring ex-Mike Stuart Span/Leviathan guitarist Brian Bennett). In 1971, Clark, along with fellow Jason Crest members Derek Smallcombe and Roger Siggery, formed Holy Mackerel. Remastered sound. Includes color insert with liner notes by David Wells and rare photos.

BONGZILLA Weedsconsin (Half-Half Neon Yellow/Neon Green Vinyl) LP
On the fringe of chaos, in the Year of the Pandemic, the Cannabeast has awoken! Bongzilla is back with a new full-length album, 16 years since their last record. These Pioneers of Weed Metal would like to present Weedsconsin to the universe. An album written by the three long standing original members of Bongzilla -- Muleboy (bass, vocals), Spanky (guitar), and Magma (drums). Recorded and mixed by the late John Hopkins at Future Apple Tree Studios in Rock Island, Illinois in October 2020. The six brand new tracks will blow your mind! In a single instant you are contaminated by the classic weed-infected sounds the band is known for, while also finding new elements mixed into the bowl. In the unique piece that is Weedsconsin, Bongzilla delivers heavy doses of crushing stoner doom and psychedelic space rock that sets it apart from earlier material. (That's why Heavy Psych Sounds is the perfect label to release this stuff). This record travels down a path of heavy riffs, mind-expanding jams, sonic tones, and stomping beats in the band's first release as a thunderous three piece, with Muleboy moving from guitar to bass. Approaching these songs as a three piece has created more space musically and allowed the band to showcase their musicianship in a different way. It results in a sound that is very heavy, along the lines of Gateway tone-wise, but sonically more clear. The album is mastered by Carl Saff at Saff Mastering in Chicago, Illinois, and Eli Quinn (Madison, Wisconsin) is the artist behind the astounding new cover art. Weedsconsin is dedicated to the memory of John Hopkins. Half-half neon yellow/neon green vinyl.

"Malpaso" quickly became the bands signature track (featuring on film soundtracks and TV shows) with its pulsating riffs and trippy middle section and "Spacequake" makes you start to think there must be something in the midlands water supply, as Bethancourt echoes Ozzy with "come take my hand my child" and the Iommi styled guitar hooks kick you straight in the gut. "Sweet Smoke" kicks off side B with its Cactus meets Grand Funk early '70s rock vibes. The sonic interplay between the power trio, back the vocals up for this anthem to a burning earth. The ten-minute closer "Black Maria" with its psychedelic twin vocals and one of the heaviest riffs you'll hear this side of dead, gives way to up-tempo bass grooves and a wah drenched lead break.

MCPHEE, DEAN Witch's Ladder CD
Witch's Ladder is the fourth full-length album from UK guitarist Dean McPhee, whose last LP Four Stones (2018) introduced a kick drum pulse, hypnotic loops and synth-like Ebow lines to his sparsely meditative, echo-laden solo guitar music. On this new album he uses his Telecaster, valve amp and effects to weave an even deeper spell, as fingerpicked melodies soar over hypnotic riffs, looped basslines and cosmic reverb trails. Recorded live with no overdubs and inspired by folklore, mysticism and the landscapes of the North of England, Witch's Ladder represents a significant evolution in his sound, while also retaining the unique sense of depth and space that has drawn comparison with the likes of Loren Connors, Dylan Carlson, and Popul Vuh. The cover art to Witch's Ladder features the stunning 1933 painting "The Primal Wing" by Agnes Pelton, a visionary symbolist who was not widely known during her lifetime but is now being recognized as a pioneer of spiritual abstract art alongside the likes of Hilma Af Klimt and Wassily Kandinsky. Witch's Ladder is the twelfth release on the Hood Faire label, a venture overseen by Sam McLoughlin (Samandtheplants/Tongues of Light), David Chatton Barker (Folklore Tapes), and Dean McPhee.

ELLIOTT, MATT Drinking Songs 2LP
2021 restock. Ici D'ailleurs present a reissue of Matt Elliot's Drinking Songs, originally released in 2004. Comes in a reverse cardboard gatefold with printed inner-sleeves and a download card."Forget 24 hour bingeing, raucous antisocial behaviour, even the gin-soaked balladry of The Band of Holy Joy or the likes of Eazy E, The Beastie Boys and Schooly D singing the praises of their favourite brew. Matt Elliott emerges shyly from the shadows of Third Eye Foundation alias to celebrate the drowning of sorrows rather than the exuberant pissing away of our leisure hours, Introspective and alone, breathing in the fumes of some neglected cellar, his drinking songs withdraw themselves not simply from polite society but from all society. How else can one dream or contemplate what might have been? Opener 'CF Bundy' has a woozy charm. Evenly paced and alive with the strumming of acoustic guitars, it sets the mood for what is to come. Evoking the regrets and indiscretions of a bygone age, one grown sick and enfeebled by fantasies, 'Trying To Explain', 'The Guilty Party' and 'What's Wrong' would all seem to be taking place in a world teetering on the edge of some great fall or cataclysm. 'What The Fuck Am I Doing On This Battlefield?' and 'A Waste of Blood' are both moments of rude awakening. As a coda and extended finale, the 20 minute 'The Maid We Messed' sees Elliott returning to the wordplay and hypervelocity breaks of his Third Eye Foundation recordings. Overall, however, Drinking Songs remains a work to be listened to with eyes closed -- it's about the only way you can keep the room from spinning." --Ken Hollings, The Wire, April 2005.

ELLIOTT, MATT Howling Songs 2LP
2021 restock. Ici D'ailleurs present a reissue of Matt Elliott's Howling Songs, originally released in 2008. Howling Songs is the magnificent third and last part to the Songs trilogy. Ici D'ailleurs are back to this Slavonic tune, without any definite frontier, whose only and constant heritage finds its roots in European music. This is a very haunted and personal piece of music which is the testimony of a unique talent where moving melodies follow other moving melodies balancing between ballad songs and folk music, madness and reason, revolt and despair. Howling Songs sympathizes with the surrounding world, it is a definitive observation in which one can feel, throughout the songs, an outraged sensitivity which is the signature of the artist. It is all the more sensitive that Matt's voice is sometimes present without any chorus in the background, bringing to the whole both confidence and unquestionable heat. Howling Songs is, without a doubt, the most introspective album by Matt Elliott and the one which best carries his musical personality.

ALCORN, SUSAN The Heart Sutra (Arranged by Janel Leppin) LP
Legendary pedal steel player Susan Alcorn presents her music as curated and arranged by cellist and composer Janel Leppin. This recording is from a live performance from her residency at Issue Project Room in July 2012. Leppin's arrangements and curation emotes the brilliance, transparency and resonance of the pedal steel guitar. Through this ensemble, the mastery of Susan Alcorn's compositions shine. Susan Alcorn has taken the pedal steel guitar far beyond its traditional role in country music. Having first paid her dues in Texas country and western bands, she began to expand the vocabulary of her instrument through her study of 20th century classical music, visionary jazz, and world musics. Struck by the music of Messiaen she began transcribing classical music from recordings and scores on her instrument. Soon, she began to combine the techniques of country-western pedal steel with her own extended techniques to form a personal style influenced by free jazz, avant-garde classical music, Indian ragas, Indigenous traditions, and various folk musics of the world. By the early 1990s her music began to show an influence of the holistic and feminist 'deep listening' philosophies of Pauline Oliveros. As her records gained a cult following she moved to Baltimore, MD. She performs internationally and is a key figure in the free improv scene in the US. Janel Leppin is a core member of the Washington, D.C. experimental, jazz, punk and improvisational scenes and is a celebrated visual artist as a weaver. DUMITRESCU/ANA-MARIA AVRAM, IANCU At the GRM Paris (performed by Stephen O'Malley) CD
A ghostly visage on a cosmic scale, these remains of shocked, glowing gas haunt planet Earth's sky toward the constellation of Cygnus and form the Veil Nebula. The nebula itself is a large supernova remnant, an expanding cloud born of the death explosion of a massive star. Light from the original supernova explosion likely reached Earth over 5,000 years ago. Also known as the Cygnus Loop, the Veil Nebula now spans nearly 3 degrees or about six times the diameter of the full Moon. That translates to over 70 light-years at its estimated distance of 1,500 light-years. In fact, the Veil is so large its brighter parts are recognized as separate nebulae, including The Witch's Broom (NGC 6960) pictured left of center. At the top right you can ?nd the Spectre of IC 1340.In loving memory of Ana-Maria Avram (1961-2017). "Our GRM session with Iancu Dumitrescu 'Crepescule' and Ana-Maria Avram 'Metalstorm'. Primarily just the guitar parts (with some conversations and electronics in the background!) recorded at GRM December 2012. This session was kind of a tryout for these pieces ... which I wanted to record properly (as they never record their music in a studio that way). We used Neuman mics etc. A working session of the guitar mics with Iancu and Ana's computer music blasting on the studio Genelecs and bleeding through the mics, as well as conversation between the three of us and their verbal conduction. I find that the character of this recording and the performance is very interesting, and acts nearly as an x-ray into the personal experience I have had performing with Hyperion Ensemble and working with Dumitrescu and Avram, from the other side of the instrument... yes it's music but material which is close to the feeling of unhinged dynamic of phenomena that both composers embody in their individual and idiosyncratic ways, which were at the same time synchronized and other volcanic and nebulous ways which opened up like an oyster. In loving memorial to Ana-Maria." --Stephen O'Malley, Berlin May 2020Personnel: Stephen O'Malley - electric guitar; AMA & ID - Computer. Rehearsals and conversations recorded at the GRM Paris December 2012 by François Bonnet. Mastered at Schwebung May 2020 by Stephan Mathieu.

GOLEM MECANIQUE Luciferis CD
All composed and performed by Golem Mecanique and her special guest Thomas Bel. Personnel: Golem Mecanique - drone box; Thomas Bel - guitar. Recorded and mixed in December 2020 at home by the mountains. Mastered by Lasse Marhaug.Golem Mecanique: "Luciferis was composed as a dark doppelganger of the Nona, Decima et Morta LP (SOMA 033LP). Luciferis is the first act of a Trilogy I : Luciferis/canto XXXIV/ Satan. In Nona... I strove to create a lace of voices, an embroidery of several drones. I was searching for hope and brightness. Luciferis is a fight between the Inside and the Outside of any kind. I studied a lot of biblical representations -- mostly the drawings of Gustave Doré. Precisely 'The fall of Lucifer', his iconographic engravure of that fall has neither beginning nor end. This fall-inspired those two tracks. As if we were trapped in the unreal battle of darkness versus light, unconsciousness and being awake, being aware of what we could never understand. There is no voice in Luciferis. I replaced it with the guitars composed and performed by Thomas. The human voice was useless. You cannot sing as dark as evil or as bright as heaven. It was useless trying. The vision of Luciferis by William Blake in the Divine Comedy inspired me a lot too. I travel between Doré, Dante, Milton and Blake. This four are my favourite boy's band."

WHITING, AMANDA After Dark CD
Taking cues from Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane at their most delicate, renowned Welsh harpist Amanda Whiting's mesmerizing Jazzman full-length After Dark arrives as soft as moonlight to gladden the soul and delight the ear -- without forgetting to bring the swing. Summoning the nocturnal mood suggested by the album's title, Whiting's harp flows and cascades, dances and alights, broods and haunts, informed by a deep understanding of both classical and jazz music, ultimately revealing a top-drawer composer with rare melodic gifts at the top of her game. From the melancholy opening track "Time Stands Still" to the more rhythmically unorthodox "Who Knows" to the achingly beautiful title track, the album is underpinned by a supportive band, John Reynolds on drums and Aidan Thorne on bass, who are perfectly suited to engage in an effortless, intimate musical dialogue. Already an inveterate international jazz festival performer with Matthew Halsall's Gondwana Orchestra, Whiting has supported and performed with a diverse range of DJs and jazz and pop artists including Jamie Cullum, DJ Yoda, Rebecca Vasmant, True Jazzchild, Danii Minogue, Jazzanova, and Chip Wickham (who features on three tracks on After Dark, adding a touch of the graceful warmth for which he has been so justly acclaimed). And as jazz harp teacher at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, and RNCM, Amanda is as warmly received in the lecture hall as the concert hall. Be sure to expect more from Amanda in the not-too distant future.

CORA & DAVID MOSS, TOM Cargo Cult Revival CD
"Tom Cora made his musical debut as drummer on a local US television program. In the mid 1970s he played guitar for a Washington, D.C. jazz club house band. He took up the cello while an undergraduate at the University of Virginia and studied with cellist Pablo Casals' student Luis Garcia-Renart and later with vibraphonist Karl Berger. During this time he formed his own group, The Moose Skowron Tuned Metal Ensemble and began constructing instruments for it. In 1979 Cora moved to New York City where he worked with Shockabilly guitarist Eugene Chadbourne. He performed at improvising clubs and venues in New York with John Zorn, Fred Frith, Butch Morris, Wayne Horvitz, David Moss, Toshinori Kondo and others. Cora also collaborated with George Cartwright and Bill Laswell which led to the formation of the art rock band Curlew in 1979. Cora remained with Curlew for over ten years and appeared on five of their albums. In 1982 Tom Cora and Fred Frith formed Skeleton Crew, an improvising rock and jazz band best known for their live performances where they played various instruments simultaneously. David Moss' life was shaped by drumming and singing. First, his father's drum-set, Bertoia sound sculptures, duos with dancer Steve Paxton. Later, singing: at Berlin Philharmonie, Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Salzburg Festival. In 2018/19 he received the German Music Authors Prize for experimental voice; sang in Olga Neuwirth's opera Lost Highway, sang Frank Zappa's music at the Venice Biennale; visited Taipei, Seattle and Bogota with Heiner Goebbels' Surrogate Cities; worked with video artist Lillevan. Moss received Guggenheim and DAAD Artist-in-Berlin Fellowships. He directs the Institute for Living Voice (and teaches). In 1983 Tom and David recorded the album Cargo Cult Revival together which was released on Fred Frith's label Rift Records. For this first ever CD re-issue, it was remastered by Martin Bowes."

They also created some outstanding multimedia works, mainly three CD ROM projects and ten DVDs. Working as an anonymous collective, their identities were kept secret until in 2017 Hardy Fox revealed himself as their primary composer. Hardy died in October 2018, but the group continue to record and perform. Recently, several new albums have been released, among them the brilliant Intruders and Ghost of Hope. Early in 2020, the group was invited to perform their seminal album God in 3 Persons at the MOMA in New York. El Año del Muerto is a compilation of mostly previously released material spanning The Residents' entire career up to 2009. It opens with a new track, 'I Can't Get No (Spot)', a mash-up of 'The Cry Of The Crow' (from the 1993 EP Prelude To 'The Teds') with the lyrics from Snakefinger's 1979 single 'The Spot'. Due to the album's similarities with the Talking Light setlist, the album has retroactively acted as a sort of teaser for the tour. It is also theorized that the album showcases an early planned setlist for the show. Previously only available as download from RSD, this is the first time this great release is available on CD."

ERNI, NOA The Mental Traveller LP
If music can take our mind to any imaginable place, on endless individual journeys, Noa Erni's The Mental Traveller is the infinite soundtrack. A soundtrack for mental wandering and soul searching, a blend of rap, jazz, and hip-hop beats. The Mental Traveller, an album assembled like a literary anthology, offers musical arrangements and unique narratives where epilogue and prologue of each track merge seamlessly. Far beyond the horizon of compiling single tracks, The Mental Traveller is a journey of sound and unity. Inspired by David Axelrod and William Blake, Ahmad Jamal and Flying Lotus -- just to name a few -- this work aims to be a tribute to these legends' legacies of past, present and future, detached from trends, norms and classical narrative structure. Swiss-born producer and computer conductor Noa Erni has been crafting obscure jazz and hip-hop behind closed curtains (aka his flat in Berlin, Germany) for years -- free from external pressure and as an adjunct to his day jobs as sommelier and co-owner of local fine wine store, Friedenauer Weinhandlung. The Mental Traveller features internationally renowned artists such as Count Bass D (alternative rap pioneer, who worked with Snoop Dogg, MF Doom (RIP) and Retrogott), Miles Bonny (New Mexico-based singer and trumpeter), S. Fidelity (hip-hop producer signed to German tastemaker label Jakarta Records), and more. Erni's guests meld seemingly with this unapologetic and experimental album showcasing stand out performances on vocals, instruments and production. While the album sounds like it was played by a jazz outfit with years of stage experience, the truth surprises and is even more exciting: Noa crafted the songs in countless hours of experimenting with a midi keyboard, various instrument plugins and perfected reverb settings. It was not one and the same band but one and the same person. Just a few tracks include actual live instruments: drums by Max von der Goltz on "The Mental Traveller Theme" and "Uncertainty", bass by Roman Klobe on "Longitude" and flugelhorn by Miles Bonny on "Train Ride". Also features Nardo Says, Shamir of WOLM, and Robot Orchestra.

JERUSALEM Jerusalem LP
"Official 2021 vinyl reissue of this epic heavy UK hard rock album from 1972, produced by Deep Purple's legendary frontman, Ian Gillan, originally released on the Decca/Deram label. It was Gillan who said of them: 'Not many bands really excite me. But this one's so raw and completely unpretentious. They make the biggest, bloodiest noise you can imagine, tempered with moments of extreme emotion.' And, of course, he's right -- the music is a menacing combination of over-the-top vocals and screaming lead guitars that sounds ahead of it's time, yet clearly drenched in the rough, heavy sound of the early 70s UK underground. Jerusalem's music could easily pass for something from the early British heavy metal scene -- or something from the emotional hardcore scene of the mid-1990s (the blistering raw emotion of 'Primitive Man'). A favorite among vinyl collectors, the album is presented here in its ultimate glory, with all tracks direct from the original master tapes, housed in a high-quality replica gatefold cover. Insert has liner notes written by bassist Paul Dean + rare photos. Highly recommended for fans of groups like Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Leaf Hound, Iron Claw, Toad, Buffalo, Zior, Horse, Incredible Hog, Dogfeet, Elias Hulk, Ginhouse and the like. Rough, raw, and doomy!"

GOLDIE Inner City Life (2020 Remix EP) 12"
Goldie's groundbreaking album Timeless turns 25 (1995), and to celebrate Clifford Joseph Price -- the pioneering producer and DJ announces new remixes of his seminal album track and classic "Inner City Life". Diverse yet crucially characteristic, each remix brings out distinctive qualities that undoubtedly accentuated the 1995 classic -- an iconic collage of sounds that capture a fragmented and urbanized London in all its magnificent musical forms. Binary State executes restraints towards the dramatic and subtle notes of the original interweaving the late Diane Charlemagne's expansive and powerful vocal performance with a rubbery tech-house journey. It's a tightly knit and perpetually driving reworking with a the four-to-the-floor dancefloor pulse. Drum and Bass don dBridge is enlisted by Goldie himself to provide a seismic, unconstrained and at times amorphous remix; an uncompromising breakdown of the creative boundaries that we experienced in the 1995 original. Continually challenging a drum & bass records accepted norm, and the delicate eccentricities a classic remix opportunity provides, this year's package also embraces a poignant jazz rendition of "Inner City Life"; a cover that provides not only smooth relief and timeless lust for the original masterpiece. Alongside the relaxed silhouette of the (re:jazz) cover, both the original radio edit and Roni Size's legendary remix that donned the tracks initial 12" is entirely re-mastered. The enduring profile of Goldie rose to incredible prominence during the '90s through pivotal albums Timeless and Saturnz Return (LMS 5521265, LMS 5521276), collaborations with everyone from David Bowie to KRS-One and the launching of his (still operational) Metalheadz label. A complex debut album, Timeless founded a new chapter in the history of the electronic genre originally reaching no. 7 in the charts and since been celebrated for its unique blend of sublime strings, beautiful atmospheres and sophisticated vocals. Inarguably an ambitious blueprint at the time; Goldie's production in 1995 fashioned the edgy rhythms and bass of jungle into a newly futuristic model, now globally admired as drum & bass.

MODESELEKTOR Mean Friend Vol. 1 12"
Modeselektor's new Extended mixtape (MONKEY 111CD/CS) consists of 27 previously unreleased tracks, and while the Berlin duo of Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary do want those tunes to be heard within the context of the mix, they've also decided that it wouldn't be right to keep all of those tracks to themselves. Over the next few months, the pair will be releasing a series of EPs, each one built around a different Extended highlight. First up is "Mean Friend", and though the manic, synth-fueled gallop of the title track headlines the package, Modeselektor have also cooked up a number of alternate versions. The booming "Mean Boyfriend" trims the fat and ups the volume, leaving behind a chest-rattling drum workout. "Komm" includes a spooky vocal turn from Einstürzende Neubauten frontman and former Bad Seeds member Blixa Bargeld. On the remix front is Detroit electro don DJ Stingray putting his own stamp on "Mean Friend". Although the original song is clearly potent on its own, the real thrill of the Mean Friend EP is hearing how all of these artists -- Modeselektor included -- harness the track's chaotic energy and usher its jagged rhythms in bold new directions.

GOPAL, SAM Escalator (Red Vinyl + 7") LP + 7"
2021 restock. Red vinyl. Includes 7". "Sam Gopal took up the tabla in Malaysia at the age of 7, before coming to study music in Britain in 1962. Sam Gopal put together his first group, 'Sam Gopal's Dream' in 1966. They quickly became a feature of the psychedelic scene, playing at the 14 Hour Technicolour Dream at Alexandra Palace in 1967 and sharing stages with such giants as Pink Floyd, the Move and Jimi Hendrix. Indeed, Jimi jammed with them during a gig at the Speakeasy in January 1968. However, whilst successful live, the band went unrecorded, and disbanded shortly after, only to be reconstituted under the 'Sam Gopal' moniker, Sam being joined by Roger D'Elia on guitar, Phil Duke on bass and most famously, ex Jimi Hendrix roadie Ian 'Lemmy' Willis on vocals and guitar. Signed to the short-lived Stable label, songs for an album were quickly written, most of them by Lemmy, and the album was released in March 1969, beautifully packaged in a gatefold sleeve. Something of a classic of psychedelic acid rock, complete with fuzzed guitars, but rooted by its Eastern percussion, the album included one cover, a rocked up version of Donovan's 'Season Of The Witch', whilst a projected single release included a version of Willie Dixon's 'Back Door Man', which managed to be even heavier than the interpretation by the Doors on their first album, released two years earlier.'You're Alone Now', one of the Lemmy-written songs on the album, became quietly influential, acting not only as a forerunner of Hawkwind's seminal 'The Watcher', but having an intro that brings to mind Black Sabbath's 1970 smash 'Paranoid'. The album ends with undoubtedly the gentlest song of Lemmy's career, the rather lovely 'Yesterlove', which has Lemmy's vocal floating gently over a backing of tabla and acoustic guitar. Sadly, despite apparently having all the ingredients in place for success, this incarnation of 'Sam Gopal' proved to be no longer-lived than 'Sam Gopal's Dream', and broke up not long after the release of this album."

NEIL/VINCE MARTIN, FRED Tear Down The Walls & Bleecker And MacDougal CD
"Tear Down The Walls(1964) mixes some (now) folk standards such as Bonnie Dobson's 'Morning Dew' and traditional songs like 'Lonesome Valley' and 'I Know You Rider'. The most of the songs belong to Fred Neil while Vince Martin brought a great deal of talent and fresh ideas to the collaboration, not to mention his association with John Sebastian (The Lovin' Spoonful) and Felix Pappalardi (The Young Rascals and later Mountain). The Bleecker & MacDougal (1965) songs where much covered in the sixties like; 'Blues on the Ceiling,' (The Bintangs), 'The Other Side To This Life,' (Jefferson Airplane) and 'Candy Man' (Roy Orbison). Vince Neil was one-of-a-kind singer, with a soul-searing, gravelly voice and fingers that picked one of the meanest blues guitars in folk."

KING SUNNY ADE & HIS AFRICAN BEATS Live Live Juju CD
"There are so many styles of music throughout Africa that it would be difficult for a Westerner to know where to start. This live album by King Sunny Ade would be a good place, for many reasons. What is Juju music? It is a lively style rooted in the interaction between elaborate percussion and guitars, and between the rollicking guitar lines and the grooving drums. This live performance of his North American tour brings the rhythmic sounds and electric guitars of Nigerian Juju music to your enjoyment. This is African guitar and drums at their very best, a kinetic whirlwind of rhythms that is riveting to listen to. Along with West African music here is a great recording of this modern African heritage."

MUSICA ELETTRONICA VIVA MEV 40 (1967-2007) 4CD
Restocked. A fourty-year overview on 4 sprawling CDs. MEV were and still are: Alvin Curran, Frederic Rzewski, Richard Teitelbaum, Karl Berger, Allan Bryant, Steve Lacy, George Lewis, Garrett List, Carol Plantamura, Gregory Reeve, Ivan Vandor. "Musica Elettronica Viva (MEV) was begun one evening in the spring of 1966 by Allan Bryant, Alvin Curran, Jon Phetteplace, Carol Plantamura, Frederic Rzweski, Richard Teitelbaum and Ivan Vandor in a room in Rome overlooking the Pantheon. MEV's music right from the start was also totally open, allowing all and everything to come in and seeking in every way to get out beyond the heartless conventions of contemporary music. Taking its cue from Tudor and Cage, MEV began sticking contact mics to anything that sounded and amplified their raw sounds: bed springs, sheets of glass, tin cans, rubber bands, toy pianos, sex vibrators, and assorted metal junk; a crushed old trumpet, cello and tenor sax kept us within musical credibility, while a home-made synthesizer of some 48 oscillators along with the first Moog synthesizer in Europe gave our otherwise neo-primitive sound an inimitable edge. In the name of the collectivity, the group abandoned both written scores and leadership and replaced them with improvisation and critical listening. Rehearsals and concerts were begun at the appropriate time by a kind of spontaneous combustion and continued until total exhaustion set in. It mattered little who played what when or how, but the fragile bond of human trust that linked us all in every moment remained unbroken. The music could go anywhere, gliding into self-regenerating unity or lurching into irrevocable chaos -- both were valuable goals. In the general euphoria of the times, MEV thought it had re-invented music; in any case it had certainly rediscovered it." --Alvin Curran. "This 4CD set, covering the years 1967-2007, comprises the best surviving recorded documents from four decades of performances, personally curated by its three core members -- Alvin Curran, Frederic Rzewski, and Richard Teitelbaum. As such, it is an invaluable historical anthology of one of the pioneering and truly legendary exponents of live-electronic music." Features: "SpaceCraft" (1967), "Stop The War" (1972), "Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, Pts. 1 & 2" (1982), "Kunstmuseum, Bern" (1990), "New Music America Festival" (1989), "Ferrara, Italy" (2002), "Mass. VA Wake Up You! Vol. 1: The Rise And Fall Of Nigerian Rock (1972-1977) 2LP
2021 repress. "The Western world was in the throes of peace, love and flower power as Nigeria descended into Civil War in 1967. The rock scene that developed during the following three years of bloodshed and destruction would come to heal the country, propagate the world-wide ideal of the Modern Nigerian, and propel Fela Kuti to stardom after the conflict ended in 1970. Wake Up You! tells the story of this time, pays homage to these now-forgotten musicians and their struggle, and brings to light the funk and psychedelic fury they created as they wrested free of the ravages of the late 1960s and created thrilling, original Nigerian rock music throughout the 1970s. This 'standard' 2LP set follows the now-OOP Record Store Day edition. It comes with a download card with full audio and a 104 page digital booklet (as a .pdf) filled with never-seen photos and detailed liner notes by Nigerian musicologist and researcher Uchenna Ikonne (Who Is William Onyeabor?; Brand New Wayo: Nigerian Boogie and Disco, etc.), with all tracks fully licensed from the bands themselves."

WEIL, GERRY The Message LP
Olindo Records launch sister label Música Infinita, with its inaugural release, a reissue of The Message by Gerry Weil -- a forgotten cornerstone of Venezuelan jazz, originally released in 1971 and greatly influenced by Bitches Brew-era Miles, Hendrix, Tower of Power and fusion of jazz and rock. The Message is packed with raw funk grooves, big band horns, and Gerry's gravelly Waitsian vocals. Gerry Weil decided to emulate Miles in 1971, but on Caribbean soil, gathering a dream team of 15 Venezuelan musicians to record an avant-garde album. The album opens with "The Joy Within Yourself", showcasing Gerry's dexterous organ playing within seconds, accompanied by stunning horn arrangements, a bluesy vocal by Weil himself and a killer electric guitar solo by Vinicio Ludovic. Continuing with "The Bull's Problem", the LP settles into a jazz funk groove with a nasty Rhodes and bass combination alongside a heavy drums and congas exchange between Alberto Naranjo and Freddy Roldán. Side A closes with title track "The Message", a sort of funky anthem or mantra that describes Gerry Weil's attitude towards life. On side B, "Johnny's Bag" kicks off proceedings on a spiritual tone. This time Gerry's on acoustic piano, accompanied yet again by a beautiful, but equally powerful horn section featuring a who's who of Venezuelan jazzmen, such as Benjamin Brea (alto), Victor Cuica (tenor), Rodrigo Barboza (trombone), and Luis Arias (trumpet). "What Is A Man" begins with a vocal duo between Vinicio Ludovic and Gerry before settling into a funky groove underpinned by Michael Berti's booming bassline. The album closes with "Little Man", a meditative, yet grooving piece that could easily be found on any of the best Blue Note albums from that same time period. Still active at the age of 81, Gerry is a living legend and a true testament to perseverance through music. Brand new artwork and an extensive interview with Gerry. Remastered by Frank Merritt at The Carvery. Edition of 500.

CURRAN, ALVIN The Works LP
The Works -- one of the most famous pieces by brilliant American composer Alvin Curran -- was not created by will and direct purpose but, as the composer himself states, as a "providential accident" which is to say quite organically. Combining piano and voice with found sound and a custom-built Serge modular synthesizer, The Works is a slowly developing piece where space and ambient tape are eventually overtaken by raga-esque chanting and frenetic piano playing, where synthesizer washes become full-on workouts all leading to a coda where the listener is "finally carried off on the wheels of the Berlin U-Bahn." Curran -- whose initial training and musical education was as a pianist -- had been living in Roma, Italy, in the mid-70s returning to his roots and performing regularly in cocktail lounges on Via Veneto. It was this return to piano and vocals that became the genesis for The Works. In relearning the piano, a five-note "motive" took hold. Added to this was "a recording I had made of our 14 year old dachshund Caspar just before he died. It was, in fact, a love song which he persisted in singing all day after meeting a lovely bitch in heat in Piazza Navona. This I knew would be the beginning of the piece." As the piece expands further the listener will hear "cows munching grass, the Rome-Florence express train, a horse-fly caught against a window pane, my footsteps approaching a Roman fountain and later going up the steps of my old studio, cicadas, an Amsterdam calliope, a tin can being kicked, and a series of sounds from La Serra di Lerici." Though The Works has been performed in many incarnations over the years, it's this performance -- captured on February 24, 1980, and originally released that same year by the short-lived Italian avant-garde label Fore -- that is the definitive version, and one of the finest recordings ever made by the celebrated composer.

HARPER, BILLY Black Saint LP
Billy Harper is one of the great tenor saxophonists in the post-Coltrane mold. Originally from Houston, TX and with a degree from the venerable University of North Texas College of Music, Harper emerged on the New York City jazz scene in the late 1960s performing with Art Blakey, Max Roach, Lee Morgan, and others. Known for his soulful and propulsive tone, Harper was already a highly regarded and prolific session man before the release of his debut album as a leader on the cult favorite Strata-East label in 1973. Recorded in 1975, Black Saint was the second album for Billy Harper as bandleader and is the most acclaimed and fully realized of his long career. The inaugural release of the Italian label Black Saint -- to which the album lent its name -- is comprised entirely of Harper compositions; the peaceful and subdued opener "Dance, Eternal Spirits, Dance!," the swinging and fiery "Croquet Ballet" and the side-long epic "Call Of The Wild And Peaceful Heart." Harper's group features trumpeter Virgil Jones -- a graduate of Roland Kirk's mid-60s groups and session player for McCoy Tyner, Charles Tolliver, and others -- along with Joe Bonner on piano, David Friesen on bass, and Malcom Pinson on drums. Black Saint is too melodic and swinging to be free jazz but too forward-thinking to be described as modal post-bop; Harper's advanced compositional sense and galvanic tenor work make this an album of pure fire music. This is a beautiful album back into print on its original format for the first time in over 40 years.

BLISS Bliss LP
Psychedelic hard-rock/heavy blues with loud fuzz-wah guitar and powerful drumming by this power-trio from Arizona, originally released in 1969. Bliss was born from the ashes of garage band The Sect. Legendary radio DJ and producer Hadley "Who Loves You Madley" (the first black disc jockey from Arizona) took them under his wing and produced some recordings. By the end of 1968, the five members of The Sect graduated and decided to break up. Soon, they reformed as a trio with Martin (bass), Reed (guitar), and Aldred (drums). Reed came up with a new name, Bliss, which not only reflected his spiritual interest but it was also more in vain with the new psychedelic sounds of artists like Cream, Blue Cheer, or Hendrix. Under Murrell's guidance, the trio recorded a full album, released on L.A.-based Canyon Records in 1969. Canyon, home to artists like Doris Duke or Swamp Dogg, was a label more focused on R&B, soul and funk than psychedelia so, not surprisingly, the album slipped through the cracks. It wasn't until a couple of decades later that Bliss was re-discovered by psych collectors, who were attracted to the album's heavy and bluesy psychedelic sound, highlighted by Reed's hard fuzz-wah guitar and Aldred's powerful drumming. The album offers a mix of great self-penned tracks (including two by Murrell) such as "Visions", "Ride The Ship Of Fools" and "Cry Of Love" -- which bears a striking resemblance to The Zombies "Time Of The Season" -- plus a few covers (Joe Tex, B.B. King, Johnny Guitar Watson). RIYL: Cream, Stack, Banchee, Hendrix, Grand Funk, Jeff Beck Group. Newly remastered sound. Heavy cardboard sleeve and insert with liner notes.

ORCUTT, BILL Bill Orcutt LP
2021 repress. LP version. For those not following Bill Orcutt's drift into increasingly ear-friendly orbits in his recent live sets, Bill Orcutt -- his first solo electric studio album -- shocks with its space and sensitivity. On this eponymous record, Orcutt mines the expansiveness and sustain possible on the electric guitar, letting notes spin out and decay at the edge of feedback. His pachinko-parlor pacing, marked by unraveling clockspring accelerandos crashing into unexpectedly suspended tones, is still in evidence. But here, his developing melodicism maps a near-contemplative mental realm, orbiting St. Joan-era Loren Connors more than the cascading treble clatter of his duo LPs with Chris Corsano and others. From the first notes of Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman", there's a lucidity and slow-burning lyricism that make Orcutt's plunges into barbed-wire fingerpicking all the more striking. While no one's about to mistake Orcutt for Jim Hall, you could probably play this for your jazzbo friends (should you be unlucky enough to have them) without raising any eyebrows. Orcutt's track selection mirrors his obsession with American popular song in its most banal manifestations, as radically reimagined via acoustic guitar on a variety of releases, including 2013's exhaustive Twenty Five Songs 7" box set, and the Editions Mego album A History of Every One (EMEGO 173CD/LP, 2013). Many of the songs from those two releases are here -- but stretched into new arrangements that explore the upper regions of the guitar neck (hitherto unexplorable on his shakily-intonated acoustic Kay), and lighting up new corners of each arrangement with a sensitivity born from years of reinterpretation. The result is a languid, freeform drift through Orcutt's internal cosmos into galaxies unknown to their original interpreters -- and occasionally, Orcutt himself. Most striking is "White Christmas", its careening low-register melodies crashing into complex chords that transcend Orcutt's primitive four-string fretboard. Orcutt's original compositions are equally striking. One of them -- "The World Without Me" -- is unique to this album, and notable for its trebly flurry of Clapton-esque 12th-fret drizzle. "O Platitudes!" by contrast, spins ever-faster in the cadence of a hand-cranked music box, before grinding to a near halt, its higher-key electricity standing in for the moaning vocalizations on Orcutt's acoustic rendition as heard on his 2014 VDSQ LP. With its deep-space beauty, harmonic complexity, and dark dissonance, Bill Orcutt is a stunning landmark in Orcutt's form-destroying trajectory.

TEARS Binging, Bragging, Bitching LP
Centered around guitar, piano, and Jeppe Grønbæk Andersen's bittersweet taletelling, Binging, Bragging, Bitching was written over the course of five years and tells a chronological tale of personal ruin and disintegration. Whilst serving mainly as a testimony of self-pity and downfall, the album concludes with a moment of clarity and reflection. Recorded in 2020, Binging, Bragging, Bitching is Tears' sophomore album and the first to be recorded with the current line-up. Tears started in 2015 as the solo moniker of Aarhus, Denmark local Jeppe Grønbæk Andersen. The first manifestation of the project was the cassette release 33 through Copenhagen label Posh Isolation the same year. The release showcased Andersen's newfound love of Casio keyboards and drum machines, which contrasted his prior affiliation with local punk and hardcore bands such as Urban Achievers, Happy Hookers for Jesus, Pleasure and Tilebreaker. Tears has since become a full rock band with a sound that emphasizes melody and carries elements of chamber pop.

LAUER Answers 2 Trouble LP
Lauer makes it all look so easy. Over his two decades in the game, Philipp Lauer's work always manages to mix the best of steely German engineering with deep emotion; industrial-strength beats with the warmth of an old sweater. On Answers 2 Trouble, the Frankfurt-based musician once again delivers the goods: nine tracks stuffed with elite beat making and delicious, '80s-influenced songcraft, drawn together by clever arrangements and expert pacing. After a handful of high-profile collabs over the past few years with the Sex Tags crew, Skatebård, Fabrizio Mammarella, and fellow Tuff City Kid Gerd Janson, the prolific producer sounds energized to be back behind the wheel for a solo spin -- his first LP since 2018's Power (RB 012LP). All the Lauer hallmarks are here: Flashes of modern house and techno, a few drops of acid, layers of gorgeous synths and those wistful melodies that recall an era when New Order played live on Baywatch. While the longtime Robert Johnson Club affiliate hasn't shied away from his John Hughes influences in the past, this time around, Mr. Philipp pushes his sound further into pure pop than ever before. Especially on cuts like "Make It Stay" and "Valentino III," Lauer swaps moody dance floor workouts for breezy, seaside drives. On the former, new collaborator Dena plays Cosey to Lauer's Chris, and the pair craft the kind of song that would sound perfect on a teenage spin in mom's convertible VW Cabriolet. Not that he's gone all pop, though. The Italo-tinged "Altalenanti" lands squarely in Lauer's patented toughness + grooviness equation, while album highlight "Ghost" (alongside frequent vocalist Jasnau) is all shouty vocal hooks, clenched fists and stomping bass lines. Lauer says the new record was completed in his brand-new, purpose-built studio. While it's easy to imagine wiring together all his vintage gear must've been a major chore, thankfully, the results sound effortless. Includes digital download.

Exclusive splatter 2021 edition. The second solo album by New Zealand psychedelic pop musician Connan Mockasin was originally released in 2013. "Taking his talents for strangeness and mood-making in a very different direction, Connan Mockasin's second solo album is a far cry from the whimsical psych pop he made with the Mockasins, and pretty far removed from his acclaimed 2010 album, Forever Dolphin Love. Yet Caramel does take musical and thematic inspiration from that album's poignantly woozy title track, which Erol Alkan reworked into an indie club hit. . . . the album overflows with sweetly sensual, acid rock meets-R&B songs and guitars so languid they seem to stretch and drip." --AllMusic

HECKER/OKKYUNG LEE Statistique Synthetique / Teum (the Silvery Slit) LP
"Statistique Synthétique" (2020) by Hecker is a computer-generated sound with resynthesized situated texture recordings. Statistique Synthétique draws as much from the history of computer sound synthesis as from its latest developments. But well beyond developing simply as a proof of concept, this piece aims to transcend the abstract status of synthetic sound objects and lead them to a properly hallucinatory state, that is to say to a meeting point where the object and perception dissolve into each other, in a sort of transcendental field. Beyond, also, hylomorphism, to reach the world of matter-form fusions, where perception knows how to see "shoulders of hills", as Cézanne wrote. Written and produced by Florian Hecker, 2019-2020. Texture analysis and resynthesis algorithm: Axel Röbel, Analysis/Synthesis Team, IRCAM, Paris. Mastered by Rashad Becker. Location Texture Recordings, using DPA 4060, DPA 4017B, DPA 4021 and DPA 4060 microphones to Sound Devices 702 recorder; except segment 4:31-5:37, recorded by Luke Fowler, April 2019 using Sony M10.Okkyung Lee's "Teum (the Silvery Slit)" (2019) was performed, recorded, and composed by Okkyung Lee (ASCAP). "Teum (the Silvery Slit)" is, as the title suggests, an overture, an opening to the game of multiplications, fragmentations, duplications. But it is also the opening understood as the void that blossoms between two borders, a break from which escapes a double tension, both the pulling force of these two edges which move apart and the opposite force of reconciliation, of compression. Okkyung Lee invites us to a truly telluric moment, a rare moment of expression where tectonic movements and shear stresses become music. If the earthquakes were, as we thought in the 18th century, due to underground thunderstorms, there is no doubt that this piece of music, both celestial and continental, could have been their audible manifestation. Mixed by Lasse Marhaug; Mastered by Guuseppe Ielasi. Part of Re-Imagine Europe, co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union.

CROATIAN AMOR Body Of Content LP
The fourth piece in Varg² and Croatian Amor's ongoing collaboration embraces the novel unions and arrangements of our digital world. Whether thought of as patchwork, medley, or chorus, Body Of Content brings together a long list of accomplices from many places in the world. NikkiH2OP, Vallmo, Charity SsB, Exploited Body, Alberto, Olimpia, CTM, Jeuru, MaS Bye, and LYZZA are brought into a united congregation. An asymmetrical body rises. Body Of Content is made almost entirely as an email collaboration. A product of a year of lockdowns, it can be thought of as a coping mechanism given form, yet it could be heard as proof that meaningful creative collaborations will persist in times of global crisis. These exchanges stood in for movement between continents, countries, and regions, tracing a network that feels uncanny for its playful communication at a distance. As a reflection of the real life of screen life, there's a new kind of "we" that is being intimated with every interaction. It's a frontier that contorts. It's infinitely reciprocal, and the plasticity of assemblages are prized. Fluidity persists, if only because that is all that will. Movement changes with new stitches undone, and all work is play. Across nine tracks, each artist's contribution sums to an album with a strangely luminous hue. Human and uncanny, the delicate foley of virtual worlds is coupled with a palette of vocal treatments that braid the vocal cords to our new platforms of communication. Beginning with 2018's Body Of Water EP, and then following with "Body Of Carbon" and "Body Of Lila," each of Varg² and Croatian Amor's serialized collaborations have brought different aspects of our hyper-compressed present into a spirited frame. Exploited Body's additional production work, including mixing and mastering duties, caps the many-armed exercises of Body Of Content.

FRISQUE CONCORDANCE (GEORG GRAEWE/JOHN BUTCHER/WILBERT DE JOODE/MARK SANDERS) Distinct Machinery 2CD
"It happened to be my birthday, that day in October 1992 when I had the great fortune of listening to the first incarnation of Frisque Concordance at the Ruhr Jazz Festival in Bochum (Germany), ingeniously curated by Martin Blume, who also played the drums in this quartet along with Hans Schneider on bass, offering his wonders . . . Here, on Distinct Machinery, Georg Graewe and John Butcher, the Concordance's core, team up with Wilbert de Joode and Mark Sanders, both another two constants in the wider Graewe universe for quite some time. Structurally the four-some and its two realizations is to be understood as a pars-pro-toto for how exactly this universe operates and evolves. Schneider was one of the very early members of this poly-centric bundle, dating back to the legendary FMP releases from 1976 and 1978 by Graewe's first quintet, a group the pianist had formed only a few days before his 18th birthday. Butcher, a collaborator for 30 years now, is (along with Frank Gratkowski) the most congenial horn counterpart to Graewe's fuid ways of sublime bridge-building. This is just a small sample of the ways in which Graewe develops his work: long-standing relationships perform expeditions into uncharted territories and then sometimes do it again, years later, offering Proustian moments of recognition plus, always, things never heard before. Continuities and disruption, known and unknown, frisque concordance and contenance angloise, as Martin Le Franc described the 15th century new distinctive style of Dunstable-English music. Distinct Machinery is just that. The combination of a studio and a live set very much distills all these qualities into diamonds, nuggets, and land-slides of sound ever unfolding. You buy one and you get two, but these two give you all. And it is not like these two are easily peg-holed sides of one coin. Listen to the drive and the dynamics of 'Hot and cold' in its two iterations here, studio- and live-setting, and you immediately realize this is not about simple dichotomies. There is a distinct romanticism in the abstract, there are planes of Ayleresk layers in the physical feel of Butcher's sometimes almost silent sound, there are distinct single-notes in Graewe's waves of still energy. There are the endless great plains of Sanders' roaring thunder filled with the warm hues of metallic star-breath-cymbal colors, there are de Joode's interstellar pulse-like sheets of legato, grounding and multi-mirroring it all..." --Markus Müller, Berlin November 2020

BOKANOWSKI, MICHELE Rhapsodia / Battements Solaires LP
"Michèle Bokanowski's art is one of densities, much like the density of a given color, a given depth. Her sound textures are, indeed, profound, both in the space occupied by their frequencies and the sharp temporal trail they leave behind. Here lies the composer's immense talent that finds the right development for each sound, letting it blossom before altering it, adapting the musical structure to let the sounds 'be', even if it sometimes means returning to the most basic form, such as a loop. This is a sign of great honesty and artistic sensitivity; able to stand back and let the music become music. It is the most radical, the most accurate gesture of composition. The two pieces on this record, dissociated in time, both in their approach and destination, nevertheless reflect, each in its own way, Michèle Bokanowski's highly singular and insightful musical intuition." --François Bonnet, Paris, 2020."Rhapsodia" (two movements and one interlude) is dedicated to Marceline Lartigue. The piece was created in the composer's own studio; Technical collaboration: Jonathan Prager. "Battements solaires" is music for Patrick Bokanowski's film. MARCHETTI, LIONEL La grande vallee / Micro-climat LP
"I wonder if my fascination for clouds (without being an obsession) may have risen at the end of the '80s as, whilst composing 'Micro-climat', I would regularly wander between the Vercors mountains and the high plateaus of the Monts du Forez discovering, through my eyes, body, breath, active observation and walk, that natural forms when constantly changing and yet swollen with a unity of matter (in this instance, water) open one up to a deep, fundamental breath and a clear field for the mind. The sky and its forces: our ally. A model for a natural music which, although fixed, as in musique concrète (a rule of the genre), moreover on a recording tape, will remain charged with such a poetic quality that (isn't it its role or rather its reality?) it will ensure a perpetual renewal for our senses, so as to reach another idea of the world, far more open and richer than what we could have imagined." --Lionel Marchetti, 2011."Lionel Marchetti is a major figure of the 'third generation' of concrète musicians, a term he values. Listening to these works, imbued with poetry and traversed by micro-narratives, one can indeed retrieve the original concrète spirit, the one that draws from the sonic world, with ears wide open, so as to extract a fertile, rich and multiple substance then shaped and conveyed towards a formal and musical abstraction. Lionel Marchetti has mastered this process, but his real distinctive feature is a truly unique talent for setting climates (as one sets traps) and keeping us on constant alert. The two pieces in this record perfectly illustrate the entrancing dimension of Lionel Marchetti's music, whose charm leads us, through each successive listening, to become voluntary captives so as to better liberate ourselves." --François Bonnet, Paris, 2020."La grande vallée": Musical composition, design and sound production carried out at the INA grm Studios (Paris) in 1993/95; Original audio recordings in the Drôme and the Mont Ventoux areas "Micro-climat" is the first movement of the Sirrus cycle (Micro-climat, Passerelle, Sirrus) composed in 1989/90; Musical composition, sound design and production, audio recordings in 1989/90 at the CFMI studios in Lyon (Lumière University, Lyon 2). NOVAK, YANN Lifeblood of Light and Rapture CD
On Lifeblood of Light And Rapture, Los Angeles artist Yann Novak contours a phosphorescent listening experience that shimmers with a hazy glow; like neon in fog. Each piece bares his trademarked sense of patience and unerring harmony, but more so than any previous editions Novak opens up the presence of these elements to create a more absorbing sensibility. "A Biochemical Cascade" captures the experience in a snapshot, as gentle eruptions of harmony fold and melt over the top of one another, each eruption seemingly more luminous than the wave before it. The result is a wholly consuming sense of tidal ecstasy. From Yann Novak: "When I began working on Lifeblood of Light and Rapture I was thinking a lot about both my personal and society's tendencies towards nihilism. When I was in grade school, I was taught that 2020 would be the turning point in our collective fight against climate change -- that if we did not change by then, there would be no turning back. After learning this at a young age, I watched helplessly as little was done to save the planet. It made me certain that I would not live to see past 2020 . . . Now that 2020 has come and gone, I have the luxury of hindsight. I can look back and see that so many of my decisions were made not to destroy myself, but in order to self-medicate. In my teens and twenties, the world was a difficult place to inhabit, but I could use chemicals and other distractions to cope. Similarly, as it turns out, this is also the story of the industrial, technological, and digital revolutions. Even though the intention of these eras was to make the world an easier place to live in, most of the progress attributed to them over the last two centuries has directly contributed to the climate crisis. On Lifeblood of Light and Rapture, I wanted to explore this parallel -- that so many of the things we do to try and make this world livable also contribute to its destruction. Formally, this album follows the path I set out on with Slowly Dismantling (RM 4112LP, 2019). I sought to express myself in a more immediate and honest way through the use of digital and analog synthesis. With Lifeblood of Light and Rapture, I built upon this same path; but I also tried to imagine the listening experience over the process of making it, focusing solely on the pure pleasure of listening..."

JONES, VIVIAN Bank Robbery LP
Roots Vibration present a reissue of Vivian Jones's debut album Bank Robbery, released in 1983 and backed by Undivided Roots. Heavy slow sparse rhythms (in a Roots Radics style) and floating keyboards. Superb roots by this inspired UK singer, including the well-known tunes "Flash It And Gwan" and "Third World Man". Born in Jamaica but raised in the UK, Vivian Jones is an important voice in the UK roots scene. Started in the '70s as deejay on local sound systems but also as a member of several UK roots bands. Disillusioned with the music industry he returned to Jamaica in 1982 and recorded some material. He returned to London, began recording again in his spare time and released his debut album Bank Robbery on Ruff Cut. He went on to work with Jah Shaka, Bobby Digital, Junior Reid, and many others. In the '90s he started his own Imperial House label. Vivian on the creation of the album: "At that time I never had a band to work with or anything so I spoke to Crucial Tony Phillips and he said I must come in. I went down to Ruff Cutt and they had some rhythms down there that they didn't know what to do with and I think they were even going to wipe some of them off the tape. They played me a few of them and I said, 'What? You gwaan wipe off this?? A me tek this!' so they say 'Alright, come voice it...' and the tune was 'Flash It And Gwaan'. When I heard that rhythm I said, 'Bwoy you mad???' and they said, 'we cyaan get nobody to sing 'pon this riddim' so I said, 'gimme the riddim'. And, in fact, before I sang it, when I heard the rhythm I went to a sound party. I went there and they gave me the mic and I started singing 'Flash It And Gwaan' right there and then . . . After 'Flash It And Gwaan' I sang about three more tunes that night and then they decided to make an album so they started giving me different rhythms and I kept voicing them until we had an album. That was the album Bank Robbery, because at the time the bank robbery was a real thing that happened on my birthday, 1st April, when they robbed some gold bullion or something like that."

RUDIMENTARY PENI Great War CD
Recorded several years ago before Rudimentary Peni engaged in another mysterious hiatus, Great War has finally emerged to kiss the gas-tinged light of a mustered morn. WIGBERT Distorted Matter 2LP
Second State Audio's latest release is a special one: the debut album from talented German producer Wigbert. Over the past decade, Wigbert has been forging a strong reputation as an inventive, versatile producer, skills that have seen him submit remixes for the likes of Gregor Tresher and Pan-Pot themselves, while achieving plenty of support from Dubfire, who has released a handful of Wigbert's EPs on his own SCI + TEC label. Stepping up for his first full-length, Wigbert demonstrates why he's a firm favorite among so many. Distorted Matter showcases his affinity for both atmospheric mood pieces and pummeling club cuts, the sign of a producer with more than one trick up his sleeve. "Uncertainty" opens the album in an ominous tone. As its name suggests, it creates a feeling of unease, even horror, as macabre drones blare underneath bleepy arpeggios. Later on the LP, on "Error 404", this mood is revisited, with bleeps and static signifying that something has gone awry. The second track on the record, "Reflection" is its hardest hitting. Ice-cold stabs, a pumping kick and driving rhythms send the track into overdrive before creepy arps and drums come back in. It's complex, layered and unrelenting. "Night Vision" is threaded with warped off-kilter rhythms, while "Xcelerator" is charged with nervous energy, echo FX and prickling percussion. Other tracks on the LP share this latter mood, such as "Digital Mirroring", with its windblown synths, distorted vox and broken beats, while the title track heralds a different variety of sounds. The beats on it are also chunky, but the airy pads place it in a more ethereal category. "Drone Level" is similarly lighter in spirit, with arps shimmering over the sound of running water. The rest of the LP continues in this is more pensive vein, with the rhythms of "Focus" loping under twinkling, reverbed synths, before "Transformed" closes the album in a delicate mélange of dreamy pads, chopped up beats, and sounds that mimic insects and nature. "Distorted Matter" is one of Second State's most sophisticated releases this year. The double-LP includes a bonus mp3 of the exclusive "Digital Mirroring - Matt Star Remix", which won't be released anywhere else.

KLEIN, MICHAEL No Mercy 12"
Frankfurt born and Berlin based Michael Klein returns to Pan-Pot's Second State for his next EP on the label. Following on from 2020's big hits "Der Sturm Kommt" and "Hoisin" from the No Mercy EP builds from an incredibly productive year for the BLK DRP label boss. "No Mercy" opens proceedings with a subdued synth subtle kick and concentrated snare hits. A bellowing kick drum then follows while 303 cuts through and creates a dark twisted undertone for the listener. Snare drums and claps each add an element of texture that ties everything together and any let off or respite is short lived before diving back in head first to the sonic storm. "Joker Smile" is up next. Keeping with the tone of the record so far a heavily weighted acidic lead orchestrates a foreboding atmosphere from the get-go. The furious acid notes swirl in and out before blistering hi-hats and snares are infused. Rapid percussion builds a sense of adrenaline and restlessness pushing the energy higher while an ever-present kick drum slams over and over leaving the power of the 303 to take full effect. Bringing things to a close on the EP is "Sticky" where Michael shows us his ability to build melody and synths seamlessly into heavy and powerful techno tracks. A rhythmic plucking synth runs throughout this finisher that builds and plummets into itself. Jolting claps and hi-hats are paired together raising the intensity. Distorted vocal samples ring out in the distance adding to the malicious dark nature of the track. These twisted samples become more and more entangled drawing you in deeper until the end. Michael once again shows that his abilities in the studio make him a force to be reckoned with -- and his newest release blasts speakers with no mercy.

ZARPA Los 4 Jinetes del Apocalipsis LP
Sommor Records present a first time reissue of Zarpa's Los 4 Jinetes del Apocalipsis, originally released in 1978. Spanish proto-doom/psychedelic hard-rock monster from 1978. A conceptual album featuring five long tracks with raw in-your-face sound and production, over-charged fuzz and wah-wah guitar, powerful vocals with killer echo/reverb and studio effects. This is must for any hard rock/metal/heavy psych aficionado. Formed in Mislata, Valencia, in 1977 by four teenager friends (Vicente Feijóo on lead vocals and lead guitar, Eduardo Feijóo on bass and vocals, Javier Herviás on guitar and Jesús Martinez on drums), Zarpa Rock ("Claw Rock"), later shortened to Zarpa, evolved from a group called Wolframio. After spending most of 1977 learning how to play their instruments, they were approached by a management agency called Zeus Rock, joining their roster in company of bands like Doble Zero. Under Zeus Rock guidance, the band did their first recording: a conceptual album titled Los 4 Jinetes del Apocalipsis (The Four Horsemen of Apocalypse) which due to low studio budget, was recorded "live in the studio" in a single one-hour-and-a-half take. After the bankruptcy of Zeus Rock, the proposed album project was shelved. Zarpa shared stage with legends like Ian Gillan and later on, in the heyday of heavy metal in Spain, they managed to release two more LPs which established them as a very popular band, even opening for Barón Rojo, true metal stars in the early '80s. Including insert with liner notes and rare pictures from the archive of Vicente Feijóo, the original guitarist and vocalist from Zarpa. Heavy carboard sleeve and OBI.

SOMBRE, CHEVAL Days Go By CD
Cheval Sombre releases his fourth album. It is his second album this year, and a companion piece to Time Waits for No One (SCR 180CD/LP), which came out at the end of February 2021 to great acclaim. Like that album, it has been produced and mixed by Sonic Boom and features guests including Galaxie 500 and Luna frontman Dean Wareham. Cheval Sombre is the nome d'arte of Chris Porpora, a poet from upstate New York whose otherworldly psychedelic lullabies on his self-titled album from 2009 and its follow-up, Mad Love (2012), won him a cult following. Coming just three months after Time Waits for No One, Days Go By furthers the overarching theme of the inexorable and inevitable march of time and, musically, comes across like John Fahey sitting in with Spiritualized circa Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space. The title Days Go By is actually taken from the lyrics of the previous record's title track -- and this is just one way in which the records are inextricably linked, via a number of symmetries. Both have ten tracks, with eight originals, one instrumental and a closing cover version, which this time around is a take on Scottish folk musician Alasdair Roberts' "The Calfless Cow". As the intersecting flight paths of the two birds on the respective covers show, there are also plenty of differences. Not least, the mood, which on Days Go By is lighter, airier, punctuated by strings which are even more beautiful. Chris likens it to Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience, but in reverse order. "How wonderful to discover that on the other side of experience, there is an innocence which has endured," he explains. "Beyond politics, love affairs, worldly woes, even life and death, it's true -- there is a calm after the storm ... You've got all these songs around conceptions of time, it's over eight years since your last album, you decide to release twin records . . . Time Waits for No One is a dark record, already reminiscent of the shadowy days of winter, of the trials of the pandemic. If Days Go By can coincide with the promise of springtime, bringing with it light, lifting spirits -- then I know my work has been done."

INVISIBLE SESSION, THE Echoes of Africa CD
After several years of silence, Schema Records co-founder Luciano Cantone in collaboration with Gianluca Petrella and a new group of musicians, present The Invisible Session's second album Echoes of Africa on the newborn Space Echo label. This new chapter is borne out of Afrobeat, Africa '70s records and Tony Allen's drumming; furthermore, other influences come into play, with melodies centered on Eastern pentatonic scales, as well as funk, Afrobeat, psychedelia, modal and Ethio jazz, plus forays into pop and cinematica. Ancestral melodies intersect and weave, encouraging escape and deeper feelings. Conceptually, Echoes of Africa deals with pacifism, human rights, anti-racism, nature and ecological themes. The impeccable rhythmic execution of the Ethiopian drummer and percussionist Abdissa "Manba" Assefa, the musical and spiritual contribution of the Gambian kora player Aruna "Jalimansa" Kuyateh, as well as the Afro-American Joyce Elaine Yuille, were an inspiration during the recording for other musicians who took part in it, giving rise to a unique emotion and sense of landscape. With the influence of greats such as the vibraphonist Mulatu Astatke and an educational study of Ethiopian music, the composition "Journey To The East" was born, with a melody built on the major Bati Lydian scale -- a pentatonic scale with particular intervals whose influence comes from the Middle East. Ethiopia is also present in "Entoto" and "Breathe the Rhythm" -- two new works written by trombonist and multi-instrumentalist Gianluca Petrella. "Hearing The Call" was conceived and written in 2018 from the inspiration of the poem present in "Children" by Haki R. Madhubuti on the Medasi album called Nation. Mystical effects and percussion attract and hypnotize the listener, while the performance of the poem, written and interpreted by the young African American/Finnish artist Benjamin "Bentality" Paavilainen, floats with relaxed naturalness. The Invisible Session dealt with themes of climate change with "To The Powerful" from the self-titled debut album released on Schema Records in 2006. This track was a prayer of sorts with an Afro-jazz hypnotic groove, addressed to the leaders of the world to preserve Mother Earth, reinforcing the need to keep the right balance of the elements. The new songs "Ideas Can Make the World" and "People All Around The World Can Make It", with their strong Afrobeat/funk personality, are intoxicants, choral aphorisms, reminiscent of American funk bands of the '70s.

MEROLI Notturni CD
Alessandro Meroli is an Italian multi-intrumentalist and composer who performed and collaborated with a multitude of artists in almost any music fields. Notturni is a record where he can finally infuse all his experience, a work imbued with nocturnal atmospheres, rarified and crepuscular. From Duke Ellington to David Axelrod, from Bernard Herrmann to Pink Floyd, jazz, electronica, psychedelia, and oriental scents accompany you along the winding streets of the night and the unconscious. A layered sound with composite rhythms that blend acoustic drums and drum machines, textural pianos and synthesizers, with wind sections melodies and metallic dissonances that jostle with each other. This is floating, cinematic music attempting to make the dream come true and transpose it into sound. Meroli is an experienced musician with collaborations in various musical fields. He's been performing with Splatterpink since the '90s -- one of the hottest Italian jazz-core groups ever conceived -- and enjoyed two albums on Cuneiform Records with prog rockers Deus Ex Machina. For a decade he worked as musician, manager, collaborator and producer with the Italian pop star Neffa. He was a founding member of Faze Liquide, a nu-jazz outfit whose work has been released on the prestigious Jazzanova Sonar Kollektiv, and a founding member of the Afro-jazz quintet Afronauti, whose work A Jazz Odyssey was broadcast by Radio Rai3 for Battiti and given rave reviews by the specialist magazine Musica Jazz. Notturni reflects and is imbued with nocturnal atmospheres that are simultaneously rarified and crepuscular. This is an idea that has taken root in my thoughts, influenced by Chopin's immortal "Nocturnes", a Journey to the End of the Night (Louis Ferdinand Celine), a solitary walk in the abandoned suburbs of a metropolis (Taxi Driver), or an escape at full speed on a fireball after a thunderstorm (A Clockwork Orange). A night experienced temporally and spiritually, from dusk to dawn, in all the colors and shades it offers. A physical, sleepless, mysterious, decadent and romantic night, the night of the soul with its anguish and infinite solitude. The night of lovers and dreamers, a night that gives way to the blinding light of a new day, to a new hope for a new life, for regeneration.

SARCASM Creeping Life LP
Red vinyl repress. Sarcasm's final offering is the much-needed shot in the arm you don't even have to queue for. Sonically their six-track EP is a potent mix of the ignorant anarcho clatter and arch post(-graduate) punk you already love them for, but moreso. Picture UK Decay squatting the Barbican. Still eschewing distortion for a truly inspired use of phase, the cavernous production (another Falco joint) will leave you staring at a city trader until he switches carriages. Whether it's echo-laden pronouncements on our worst instincts for techno addiction ("Digital Colony") or odes to modernist artists Paul Nash ("Marsh Personage") each track is as desperate as it is restrained by the same conditions. Heavily reminiscent of Fallout and the more cerebral end of UK82, mercilessly taut and lyrically about as obtuse as you'd hope from punk songs about rare varieties of lichen. Some guy once said something about the need for pessimism of the intellect and optimism of the will in abject times, and this band amply proved the evergreen joy to be had in being a smart arse. RAWFRUCHT Rawfrucht LP
Rawfrücht's classic 1996 album, available for the first time on vinyl. Recorded in late 1996 and released in early 1997, this first album from the power trio Rawfrücht (two guitars plus percussions), defies and questions the definition of genres, eras and musical movements. Ranging from minimal meditative dronish soundscapes, perfect for introspective journeys, to more "groovy" moments, from noise rock to free rock-but-not-post rock unstable patterns -- sometimes even within a single track -- this album is a ride on undefined roads, no maps allowed, just instinct and the energy to always go further and deeper into charting new sonic territories. After the release of this first untitled album, names like those of Marc Ribot, Sonic Youth, or King Crimson were frequently associated to it. But this doesn't really define what this album, released for the first time on LP, really is about. Two guitars and drums. Swell Maps meet Parliament, shades of Hendrix. Can-erisms catching up with the ramblings of Gastr Del Sol. Secret and reserved side in the best tradition of the Chicago School: Tortoise, Rome, etc. Rawfrücht was a powerful trio from Brussels, based on two guitars: Hugues Warin and Teuk Henri (Sharko, Juniper Boots), and a drum: Thomas Van Cottom (Cabane, Venus).

WINTER FAMILY Chevaliers LP
Winter Family is a duo made up of Ruth Rosenthal and Xavier Klaine. They met in Jaffa in 2004. Their dark, saturated and dense music is described as "death swing", "weird wave", or "funeral pop". They recorded new parts of this new album in St Martin church of Maxéville, France. Includes insert.Xavier: "I recorded the pipe organ there, inspired by the Alsatian philanthropist organist Albert Schweitzer whose slow, bombastic performances, limited by faulty technique have always touched me deeply. In 2006, my aunt Loulou agrees to lend me the keys to the church. Ten years later, Loulou passes away, I play on this same pipe organ during her funeral. During the fall of 2018, in her room with old floral wallpapers, so cold, that I empty, surrounded by her missals and huge crucifixes I remix this pipe organs and the voice of Ruth. Through this late remixing, we wanted to deliver this woman from her agony, her eyes turned to the milkish Lotharingia sky and beyond, trying to illustrate this Catholic France of yesterday, as vain and terrifying as a month of November in this cold and humid garden, within reach of the incessant song of the A31 highway."

HARRIS/MARTYN BATES, MICK Murder Ballads [Drift] 2LP
For the first time on vinyl, the post-isolationist, deep ambiance and folksong classic Murder Ballads [Drift] by Mick Harris/Martyn Bates , originally released in 1994. Rarely do two types of music meet on a level where they threaten to cancel each other out -- let alone create something even more meaningful in their mutual vanishing. But the music created within the seminal Murder Ballads [Drift] by Martyn Bates (Eyeless in Gaza) and Mick Harris (Napalm Death, Lull, Painkiller, Scorn) creates just such a world. Murder Ballads [Drift] evolves Martyn Bates vocalizations/storytelling song-voices, by turns expressed as labyrinthine layers, calls and responses, muted and distant echoes, sung whispers and counter-melodies, ultimately resulting in a mesmeric conversation of musical inferences and correspondences. Murder Ballads [Drift] created the post-isolationist frame of reference, innovating and extemporizing into a truly original dazzlingly unique form. Mick Harris traffics in the isolationist ambience of Lull, while Martyn Bates is the emotive voice of literate cult-pop duo Eyeless in Gaza. The unlikely pair -- one given to terminally frigid drone, the other to impassioned, bittersweet voicings -- finds common ground in folk music's most macabre tradition, the murder ballad. These ghoulish parables are awash in blood and tears, the strands of love, hate, birth, death, sin, and salvation entwined within like the roots of an ancient tree. Mothers callously kill their children; suitors slay their maidens without remorse; and fate exacts its cruel price from all. The archaic murder ballads that leak from Bates' vocal cords are intensely sad and carnal. They tend to leap off cliffs of hollow effects or drone darkly, offering neither a robust delivery nor an element of irony to take the edge off. The archetypal characters that live and die in them give life's full tragedy back to Harris' electronically numbed "post-isolationist" dreaming. Drift plays out an unbreakable and timeless cycle of bloody folklore (people) and hypnotic soundscapes (the god who watches). Textured sleeve; Marbled vinyl.

RIMBAUD/HANS OP DE BEECK, ROBIN Staging Silence (Original Film Soundtracks) 2LP
British artist Robin Rimbaud (Scanner) traverses the experimental terrain between sound and space connecting a bewilderingly diverse array of genres. Since 1991 he has been intensely active in sonic art, producing concerts, installations and recordings, the albums Mass Observation (EDRM 427CD, 1994), Delivery (1997), and The Garden is Full of Metal (1998) hailed by critics as innovative and inspirational works of contemporary electronic music. Committed to working with cutting edge practitioners he has collaborated with Bryan Ferry, Wayne McGregor, Mike Kelley, Carsten Nicolai, Michael Nyman, Steve McQueen, Laurie Anderson, and Hussein Chalayan, amongst many others. Rimbaud first met Belgian artist Hans Op de Beeck at Le Fresnoy Studio national des Arts Contemporains when they were both Visiting Professors in 2012. Op de Beeck lives and works in Brussels, Belgium and creates sculpture, installations, video, photography, animated films, drawing, painting, and writing. His various works show the viewer non-existent, but identifiable places, moments and characters that appear to have been taken from everyday life. The artists found an immediate creative connection, and a year after meeting Staging Silence (2) was completed. In 2019, they returned to the theme and created Staging Silence (3). Each of the films is realized through the same principles, as two pairs of anonymous hands construct and deconstruct fictional interiors and landscapes on a mini film set of just three-square meters in size. The films take the viewer on a visual journey through depopulated, enigmatic and often melancholic, but nonetheless playful, small-scaled places, which are built up and taken down before the eye of the camera. Ranging from hyper-realistic fictional land and cityscapes to absurd, almost surreal, dreamscapes, the various locations are connected by the sense of mystery and melancholy that pervades them. And at every moment Rimbaud's score is amplifying and illustrating these moments, from tragedy to nostalgia, witty to optimistic. Introspective and lyrical, Staging Silence offers listeners a world of mystery and intrigue, held together by nature and time. This is a very humane works experienced at a time when many feel disconnected from the surrounding world. The peculiar silence that permeates this hauntingly beautiful work is very much an illustration of our times, anticipating a future in the past. Staging Silence is an exquisite study in dreamlike abstract ambience, a kaleidoscope of sounds and tones that engage the head and the heart.

MOORE, DIRK SPECHT, TOBIAS GREWENIG, ANTHONY The April Sessions LP
This journey, this slowly drifting sonic meditation, is an "inner soundscape", a dialogue between the senses, the conscience and the world, inside / outside, interconnected. Like waking up from a long dream, and being stuck into its echo. The April Sessions immerges the listener into a drone-ish universe, full of random acousmatic events, inner monologues and a vast and unwritten subjective map to be drawn."The April Sessions has been living in a seedy hotel in Brussels for a few months. She listens to the sparse traffic outside her window, locked in and locked down. "Everything is constructed", she says to herself, "even the sound of a solitary aircraft at 25,000 feet traverses the sky no further out than the inside of my skull". Other weird sonic phenomena criss-cross the inner cosmos of her brain and streak across her private sky like comets. And then there is the unshakeable presence of that inner monologue, known to her variously as the Tacit Dictator, the Subvocaliser and, nightmarishly enough, the voice of the Merlucid Hake." --Anthony Moore, St Leonards, 10th of March 2021Anthony Moore, Dirk Specht and Tobias Grewenig have known each other and worked together since the early 2000s. They have collectively participated in a number of projects including live performances and recordings. In 2016, as part of The Missing Present Band, they released the live LP The Present Is Missing on A-Musik. The following year they released Ore Talks, a double LP, realized in collaboration with Therapeutische Hörgruppe Köln.

STORDEUR, ANDRE Oberheim SEM 8 Voice 1979-80 LP
Unreleased track "Oberheim SEM 8 Voice" (1979-80) with selected works circa 2000 by a key composer of Belgian electronic music, André Stordeur. Released in Sub Rosa'a Early Electronic series.André Stordeur (March 01, 1941 - April 07, 2020): Belgian electronic music composer. His musical career started in 1973 with a tape composition for the soundtrack to a film on Gordon Matta-Clark titled Office Baroque. Later in the 1970s, he participated to avant-garde music ensemble Studio voor Experimentele Muziek, founded in Antwerp, Flanders, by Joris De Laet. Since 1980, Stordeur composes exclusively on Serge synthesizer, either a Serge series 79 and a Serge prototype 1980, which was especially built for him by Serge Tcherepnin himself. In 1981, Stordeur composed the music of Belgian film director Christian Mesnil's documentary Du Zaïre au Congo. He studied at IRCAM in 1981 with David Wessel and then flew to the US to study with Morton Subotnick. Stordeur became an influential sound synthesis teacher and, in 1997, completed his Art of Analog Modular Synthesis by Voltage Control, a guide to everything modular.Oberheim: While "Oberheim" is the centerpiece of this LP, Sub Rosa pressed for the first time on vinyl three pieces from the session André called Synthesis Studies, previously featuring on Complete Analog and Digital Electronic Music, 1978-2000. "I was helped in my studies by a must-have book: The Techniques of Electronic Music, by Thomas Wells and Eric Vogel (University Stores, 1974). That book aside, I learned synthesis on my own. After a trip to India in 1968, I discovered Indian music and took tabla and sitar classes in New Delhi; my teachers were students of Chatur Lal and Ravi Shankar. Later, in the 2000s, while living in the US, I tried to recreate through synthesis all the Indian musical instruments I loved so much.' 'Drone' is one of his most spectacular works."

Hailed by international critics, The Young Gods received a unique attention from the British music press: "A firestorm, a total, catastrophic sweep across the scattered fragments of rock history and rock dilapidation, The Young Gods used sampling not out of some nostalgic sense of mischief but to whip up everything into a hurricane of charcoal. The ultimate in technology to release the most determinedly savage sound of the year. We repeat this is the future." --Melody Maker, Best Album of 1987. Remastered from the original recordings.

INCAPACITANTS Incapacitants LP
Urashima present one of the most sought-after artifacts from the '80s noise scene -- Incapacitants' first cassette, recorded in 1981 by Toshiji Mikawa and never been released until now, reemerging in a new fully remastered edition by Andrea Marutti on vinyl format. Few projects can claim the seminal importance of the Incapacitants on worldwide noise scene. The group was formed in 1981 in Osaka, as the solo project of Toshiji Mikawa, a member of the amazing noise group Hijokaidan. Later Mikawa moved to Tokyo, where he joined with Fumio Kosakai, also an occasional member of Hijokaidan, as well as a former member of C.C.C.C., to make Incapacitants a duo. They've been making some of the most unremittingly ear-shattering racket for decades as Incapacitants, one of the most significant noise outfits to emerge from the groundbreaking Japanese scene in the early 1980s, and still one of the most radical and powerful. They've consistently been responsible for some of the most complex, chaotic, loud, and downright fun releases in the genre. The cassette consists of a long track on side A titled "Fulfilled Promise" that starts slowly and gradually transforms into a crackling volcano and then comes the bursts and the outflow of lava, always controlled. While side B is a collection of small noise gems, furrows that precede the intensity and the noisy purity that will characterize all the production of the Incapacitants, titled Plague. The two sides of the tape are very different from each other, but they contain the same exciting, terrifying, hypnotic, and fascinating soul -- there's very little air to breathe here! The vinyl edition faithfully reproduces the order and duration of the tracks recorded on tape. Includes 12" size insert with extensive notes by Toshiji Mikawa in Japanese with translation by Kato David Hopkins in English. Edition of 299.Translated from Japanese liner notes by Toshiji Mikawa: "Listening to such artless performances and recordings is a bit embarrassing but, at the risk of flattering myself, I think it has some degree of interest. It's from almost forty years ago, but I hope you'll enjoy the very first recordings under the name Incapacitants."

MERZBOW Rainbow Electronics 2LP
Urashima reissue Merzbow's Rainbow Electronics on vinyl, originally released on CD in 1990. Merzbow stands as the most important artist in noise music. The moniker of Japanese artist Masami Akita was born in Tokyo in 1979. Inspired by dadaism and surrealism, Akita took the name for his project from German artist Kurt Schwitters's pre-war architectural assemblage The Cathedral of Erotic Misery or Merzbau. Working in his home, he quickly gained notoriety as a purveyor of a musical genre composed solely of pure, unadulterated noise. Originally released on CD in 1990 by Alchemy Records as part of the Good Alchemy Series, Rainbow Electronics marks the pinnacle of Merzbow's late '80s noise phase. Selected and transformed from about 21 hours tape of primitive raw material recorded during three years (1987-1990) in 14 fragments lasting about 74 minutes, this monumental work is an aural trip through a cold plotted universe of intergalactic space ships and golden celestial bodies. Remastered in December 2019 and split into four parts directly by the artist for the double vinyl version it opens up with a slow, kind of creepy tempo, reaching from dirty harsh noise flows coupled with eerie reverbed screeches and scrapes of iron objects. Noise and blasts come from every angle, and all you can do is sit and take it. Then continues with solid drumbeats briefly emerging from the static and disappearing just as quickly, again long stretches of subdued electronic drones buzzing along sleepily and the occasional sudden shift of noise into something more violent, though it all happens kind of slowly and gradually. A truly mesmerizing and immersive body of sound and its intense finish is something of pure artform. Gatefold cover, faithfully reproduces the original art work plus a 12" size insert; edition of 299.Translated from Japanese liner notes of Alchemy Records CD by Toshiji Mikawa: "I don't need a lot of words about Merzbow. All you have to do is immerse yourself in the sound."

MASONNA Freak LP
Urashima reissue Masonna's Freak, originally released on cassette in 1995. Cascades of electronic noise, a psychedelic touch and vocal belching mixed together constitute the ingredients of Mademoiselle Anne Sanglante Ou Notre Nymphomanie Auréolé, the double-barreled name for Masonna. Maso Yamazaki founded his project in 1987, with a charismatic and glamorous personality who become a cult figure in "Japanoise" scene. Masonna's abundant productions on his own legendary and astonishing label Coquette were presented in very limited edition, sometime totally confidential (one sole copy), and reflect his predilection for '60s psychedelic music revisited in its own very peculiar way. He transforms his voice into noise, feeding the microphone back through a process of extreme distortion. His shouts become clipped bursts of overloaded sound, doubled and extended by a delay that displace the sounds into stuttered blasts of static. Freak is an ultra-rare cassette originally released in 1995 by Coquette in an edition of 36 copies in a special gold paper and now return for the first time in a flabbergasting vinyl format fully remastered. This mature work is very brash, earsplitting and mad. The distortion and effects on the vocals are top notch, they in combination with his awesome screaming create a complete audio assault. Sometimes pleading sobs are heard. And they are all, regularly, philologically broken, retouched, stiffened. And they mingle in the vortex. Or at most they come back to be slaughtered a little more only to be thrown back again, finally in the centrifuge. Everything is scraped, fast and beautiful and focuses an electrically overcharged universe, punctuating the thrilling and vocal sonorous power with some quite moments and brief interruptions, conferring a very particular dynamic to this work. Originally released as single side tape C30, this vinyl edition divided into two parts of about fifteen minutes each. Freak is an absolutely astounding piece of work by one of the great pioneers of extreme noise from Japan. This is bound to be a revelation for anyone and it can't be missed. Includes A3 size poster with Masonna in "action pose". Edition of 299.

PAIN JERK Neurotten LP
Urashima present a reissue of Pain Jerk's Neurotten, originally released on cassette in 1996. Kohei Gomi began experimenting with home recording in the 1980s and got so lost in extreme sonics under the Pain Jerk moniker that his output inevitably spilled out into the wider world. By the mid-90s, he was one of the most prolific and influential noise units operating out of Japan, hurling maelstroms of chaotic chunder and deranged grime at anyone who could handle the extremes. Pain Jerk became one of the leading figures in the "dynamic" style of Japanese noise or Japanoise and is also the owner of the noise tape label AMP that during the '90s releases about fifty cassettes of his amazing noise project. Among his works released in his most prolific period, Neurotten stands out without a doubt, reaching cult status and instantly becoming a classic of the genre. Recorded in 1996 and published the same year on the legendary Slaughter Productions by Marco Corbelli aka Atrax Morgue, in only 80 hand numbered copies in a special A5 tin-foil sleeve with translucent insert and instead some using a red cardboard insert accompanied by a small curved iron rod, similar to a dentist's tool. The assault here is very high-end heavy: relentlessly aggressive. The sound severs and bleeds more than it beats and bludgeons. Side A is divided into two tracks, "Gushcore" and "Teen-Wreckage", of incredible beauty. Nothing compares to the sounds emitted by vinyl grooves composed with a mysterious configuration of constantly flowing noise -- always recorded live without overdubs. Devastating, unfriendly harsh noise: the hardest rock that is pierced by the sharpest diamond. With only one track on side B, which takes 23 minutes, you encounter one of most iconic compositions from his wide discography: "Disembowel". Hearing impaired volumes that duel, bouncing sound structures displacing the ego and generating many difficulties in brain processing. There're a lot of rips and chaos, pulsating pulses of recycled transient sounds and some loops, muffled high tones that twist into spastic shapes capable of breaking the faint speaker cones. This rare gem is restored and remastered from the original DAT master by Nobuki Nishiyama and reissued for the first time on vinyl. Absolutely incredible and a complete revelation from start to finish, before us lays yet another crucial piece in the puzzle to emerge from this astounding world of noises. New artwork by Koichi Nagura and an original drawing by Yukou Suzuki; edition of 299.

AUBE Grind Carve LP
Urashima present a reissue of Aube's Grind Carve, originally released in 1996. Akifumi Nakajima was probably best known for his work under the name Aube, which was one of the more prolific and most interesting noise acts from Japan. He had an impeccable and marvelous sense of design and appreciation for the materials, taking packaging beyond just using regular old paper with his wonderful and unique label G.R.O.S.S., dedicated to releasing experimental music and noise, in addition to his own recordings as Aube. He began recording in 1980 but released nothing until he was asked to create music for an art installation in the early '90s. Since the installation involved water, he decided to use appropriately watery sounds for the music. And first Aube release came in 1991, when the Japanese noise label Vanilla Records run by Michio Teshima released Hydrophobia cassette. Quite a few more water-related recordings followed, and Nakajima soon began branching out by using varied sources such as field recordings, isolating elements of technology, the hum from fluorescent lamps, human voices, brain waves, heartbeats and even pages being ripped from a Bible. Taking a minimalist approach for his recordings, Akifumi Nakajima uses simple source sounds which are fed into his system, then heavily processed into a vast dimensional landscape of sonic textures reached from incredibly harsh, and ear splittingly loud noise, to soft floating ambiance, creating an entire album with different tracks from just one basic sound. Grind Carve was recorded in 1996 and released in the same year by legendary Slaughter Productions by Marco Corbelli aka Atrax Morgue, in only about 80 copies in A6 sleeve. The first three tracks occupy the A side of the vinyl, while the fourth and last track covers the entire B side. Grind Carve stands out in Aube's body of work, being one of the few to incorporate only one voltage controlled oscillator as source material. The result is an incredibly listenable expanse of deconstructed melody, long wavering tones, abides, noise and texture, that make it easily one of the most exciting works by the artist ever, emerging with a sound-sphinx that multiplies the listening interpretations. Rippling sheets of noise double as aesthetic decoding, and indications of coordinates within the cultural and temporary landscape, moving the oscillator and the acts of its making toward an image of something essential and fundamental. Remastered from original DAT mastered by Andrea Marutti. Reissued for the first time on vinyl, with the original artwork designed by Akifumi Nakajima. Edition of 199.

MASONNA Filled With Unquestionable Feelings LP
Urashima present a reissue of Masonna's Filled With Unquestionable Feelings, originally released in 1995. Filled With Unquestionable Feelings along with Freak is an ultra-rare cassette originally released in 1995 by Coquette in an edition of only 36 copies. The two sides of the album are completely different from each other. Side A can be considered a classic Masonna piece, where it reaches its full artistic maturity here. This side is very brash, earsplitting and mad. The distortion and effects on the vocals are top notch, they in combination with his awesome screaming create a complete audio assault. Remind also to his first period as Open Your Cunt and Like A Vagina tapes. Everything is scraped, fast and beautiful and focuses an electrically overcharged universe, punctuating the thrilling and vocal sonorous power with some quite moments and brief interruptions, conferring a very particular dynamic to work. Side B is completely different. The voice disappears (or is no longer heard because it is covered or transformed by feedback). The structure is more compact and organized but eventually becomes far wilder, building up to pointillistic bleeps and dense layers of electronic fizz that unexpectedly cut to near-silence; these bear many uncanny resemblances to the simple melodic improvs and incessant ostinatos of Terry Riley. At once beautiful and remarkably challenging, Filled With Unquestionable Feelings, is an absolutely revelation in the wide discography of Masonna and easily one of the early contenders for the best artist release. Original tape copies are virtually unobtainable, skirting well into the three figure realm. First time vinyl issued, fully remastered. Edition of 299.

CONTROLLED DEATH Requiem For The Boundless Flesh 5x7" BOX
5x7'" wooden box set. Controlled Death is the dark-side project by the Japanese noise legend Masonna that started with Symphony For The Black Murder as first official work released in April 2018 in a vinyl edition of 199 copies. The activities of Controlled Death are like archaic revival to the music experience before Masonna. You can also find the pathology image of the early industrial period and the shadows of Vienna activism such as Hermann Nitsch. The existence and art that pierces through conspicuous consciousness and dives to areas of unconsciousness due to death and pleasure. Controlled Death's incredible new work is released on a fivefold seven inch. Ten new tracks, to be precise ten requiem, between five and six minutes each for a total duration of almost an hour. The selection of the format is perfect for this composition: the analog support highlights the lo-fi recording and the choice of seven inches allows you to listen to the same song several times, or more songs without a preset order. Thus, was born Requiem for the boundless flesh, a pulsating panorama of screams, Korg MS20 MK1 and EMS VCS3 The Putney synthesizers with the addition of the grand piano, electric guitar, tape and effects. Each piece is a short sound vignette, which fills the air with its otherworldly beauty and goes away with the same speed with which it arrived, where the presence of the Viennese master always hovers. Like a cosmic journey, without a precise destination, you enter a new evolution of Controlled Death's work. The sound is darker, the darkness envelops you with its ancestral echoes, the use of synths is accompanied by inhuman screams, sounds on the edge of psychosis are lost in the infinite expanse of the gorges "at the mountains of madness". A sound tunnel is created that leads to the depths of the earth. The myth of Cthulhu mingles with the mangled flesh of human beings. The legend moves towards the harsh reality. Rotten, worm-eaten flesh lies beneath thousands of tombstones: boundless masses of flesh! The rumble of the synths becomes thunderous. The use of the guitar and the grand piano are thus distorted, slowed down and overwhelmed once again by the slanted and dilated screams and the intertwining of the pedal's effects. The tape editing work is wonderful, with a mastery of machines that can be compared to the German cosmic duo Moebius & Roedelius. But the result is not as sugary as Cluster or Harmonia tunes. Honey has become blood and flesh in Maso's hands and harmony gives way to obscure and desolate side. But if it had been recorded in West Berlin during 1970, Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser would have certainly wanted it for his Ohr label! Fivefold seven inch comes with solid black wooden box with laser engraving, 700 gm black cardboard with gold letterpress hand numbered in 308 copies and postcard. Once again Controlled Death, with his new title Requiem for the boundless flesh, has raised the bar for the field of Urashima releases. A truly astounding piece of work.

INOYAMALAND Danzindan-Pojidon LP
2021 repress. WRWTFWW Records present the much-anticipated official reissue of Japanese duo Inoyamaland's quintessential ambient/environmental/electronic album Danzindan-Pojidon, produced by Haruomi Hosono and originally released in 1983 on his Yen Records label. Available outside of Japan for the first time, the new age classic comes as a limited LP with liner notes by band member Makoto Inoue. With Danzindan-Pojidon, Yasushi Yamashita and Makoto Inoue created what they describe as "a special place where the kingdom of summer vacation never ended." Playful and magical, it's a sonic landscape defined by tinkling synths, floating minimalist melodies, pastoral excursions, and mythical overtones. The ten-track adventure takes the listener on a joyful audio exploration of unknown but friendly territories, like childhood memories of an imaginary island where everything is vibrantly alive and peaceful. The original recording sessions for the album took place in an apartment filled with Inoyamaland's "favorite things and friends" and the wonders that came out of them were handed to master Harry Hosono who added his undeniable genius touch. And thus Danzindan-Pojidon was born, an absolute must-have, sitting in the pantheon of all-time '80s Japanese ambient greats alongside Midori Takada's Through The Looking Glass (WRWTFWW 018LP/019CD/019LP), Hiroshi Yoshimura's Green, and Satoshi Ashikawa's Still Way (WRWTFWW 030CD/LP) -- and holding that mysterious power of "music that makes life a little easier and happier." 350gsm sleeve with selected UV high gloss varnish.

DEGIHEUGI The Broken Symphony CD
Reissue, originally released in 2008. For his third LP, Degiheugi, a very productive producer, returns with a magnificent and very well-done cake. True goldsmith's work, The Broken Symphony is a pure jewel. Between rap, trip-hop and electro, Degiheugi is this time accompanied by rapper Ghostown, singer Nawelle and talented hacker L'omelette, already present on his previous opus. Produced under a Creative Commons license and available on the Degiheugi website for legal download, The Broken Symphony is composed of assemblies and sound tinkering of all kinds reminiscent of a certain Wax Tailor, see Morcheeba on the excellent "My Gypsy Nights". But let's stop the quick comparisons there. Listen to the broken symphony once, then listen twice and then it becomes almost obsessive. The inspirations are numerous, coming as much from funk, jazz as from classical music or film scores (Morricone...). You will be overwhelmed by hypnotic atmospheres, oceans of color and very real feelings. Floods of stories that incessantly appeal to the imagination as the musical richness and the quality of the production are taken care of. Very coherent, this "broken symphony" is crossed by the same breath, a melancholy spleen... The colors are dark certainly, but cut in the best velvet: warm and moiré. Dark and bright at the same time. Cover art produced by Degiheugi. Also features Mo-te and Screenatorium.

DEGIHEUGI Abstract Symposium CD
Reissue, originally released in 2010. Two years after the excellent The Broken Symphony, the wait is over. Degiheugi's fourth album, Abstract Symposium is an album that stands out from its predecessors. Indeed, if the beatmaker made himself known thanks to an essentially instrumental production, his latest effort goes against his whole approach. You will understand, the album is a vocal disc: a host of guests, for 16 strong character tracks. Don't panic, if you enjoyed the previous albums, it's a safe bet that this disc will delight your eardrums just like in the good old days. Understand by this that, even if the bias to put forward the voice can be risky for the solidity of the production of the sieur, the balance remains preserved. On the program, cuts, breaks, "triturage and assemblage", which made it famous, all cleverly enriched by the vocal performances of the guests. Here the change is intelligent, it operates smoothly and surprises you when you least expect it, while preserving certain immutable bases which give this artist all his interest. Sometimes jazz, then hip-hop, or acoustic folk, Abstract Symposium is the album of diversity... But can it be otherwise with Degiheugi... Features Screenatorium, Nomad, Ghostown, Doctor Noodle, Nolto, Kalyanka, Andrre, Astronautalis, Skap'1, and Mock.

DEGIHEUGI Dancing Chords & Fireflies CD
Reissue, originally released in 2012. From the cover of Dancing Chords And Fireflies, you sense that your wait will be rewarded: a kind of digital origami, the artwork very pleasantly caresses the eye... The beatmaker's previous albums told a story, this one is no exception to the rule. The album opens with a "what's up?", aptly. Yes, after two years of silence, it was time to give another news, and the man is in good shape without a doubt! Degiheugi surprises you while remaining himself, creator of magical atmospheres and unparalleled sound director, supported here by a world-class cast. The albums is noted by the triple participation of Miscellaneous, the soft voice of Astrid Van Peeterssen, the rocky flow of the Canadian Andree and especially the featuring of Pierre the Motionless and Brzowski on the superb "Embers". 21 tracks, oscillating between jazz, hip-hop and electro, which paint a colorful, soft, addicting world full of flavors. The "Degiheugi Touch" is this little thing, melancholy and punchy at the same time, that differentiates him from Wax Tailor (more general public) and Doctor Flake (colder), to whom he is often compared. Broken Symphony was his major album, it will now be necessary to reckon with Dancing Chords, a perfect synthesis of the Degiheugien universe! Also features Andrre and Felix Faire.

DEGIHEUGI Endless Smile CD
Reissue, originally released in 2015. The years go by and the ranks of followers never stop growing: it is because the already very busy discography of Degiheugi is enriched each time with a new solid gold disc, composing a unique, impressive work, in the French beatmaking landscape. Endless Smile, sixth episode, reveals itself once again as a grand cru, immediately clear, but above all long in the mouth, loaded with intense melodic persistence and curls that take the ear hostage. And what a variety of aromas in the art of sampling: languid strings, oriental flutes, hopping brass, exotic percussions, intimate piano, samples of antediluvian blues or forgotten French song. This grape variety from the "Great West" finds its perfect balance in a hip-hop, classic, timeless spirit, which runs through the entire album in common thread. When other beatmakers give in too quickly to the sirens of the dancefloor, Degiheugi always transports us to his first hip-hop loves, for the sheer pleasure of the "beautiful loop". And that is why he knows how to surround himself as he should: the guests, faithful cronies (Ghostown, Andrre, Astrid Van Peetersen), or newcomers (Ceschi, Josh Martinez), join the party with high-level features. The title of the album then sounds like a prophecy: an eternal smile while listening to Degiheugi.

DEGIHEUGI Bagatelle CD
Reissue, originally released in 2017. The wait that separates each new gem extracted from Degiheugi's personal gold mine is a bit the one that grips you with each forced exile with the loved one. Two years after the peaks climbed on Endless Smile, a seventh discographic summit awaits you, an enchanting panorama where sixteen titles meander in the twists and turns of the romantic relationship. A theme that you no longer present, but explored here with a musicality so salient and distinctive that you can only qualify it as "degiheugiesque": the waltzes of desire become myriads of solar samples, flourish in the roundness of synths analog inherited from the golden age of EDM. During the ascent, you will enjoy here and there breathtaking views of the Brazilian or African coasts, while the local guests will offer you stopovers in ragga lands (featuring Devi Reed), in the intimacy of a trip-splendor-hop (Astrid Van Peetersen) or in the footsteps of a rap with princely pageantry (Chill Bump, Chima Anya). Degiheugi may praise the lightness of his art and defend himself from any spirit of seriousness, this music and this album have Bagatelle only in the name: they are above all passions that one embraces. Also features Miscellaneous.
