CONGOS, THE Heart Of The Congos 3LP
2021 repress. "20 years after the release of Blood & Fire's outstanding but now deleted Heart Of The Congos reissue, VP Records/17 North Parade release a definitive, 2017 re-mastered triple-LP edition, put together with both respect and gratitude to that illustrious antecedent. The vinyl package includes 'Don't Blame It On I' an overlooked, previously unreleased track unearthed, too late to include on the Blood & Fire release, by Steve Barrow and David Katz in 1997. All tracks are re-mastered and subsequent dub and 12" mixes from the historic al-bum are included, making the 40th anniversary edition, the most complete presentation of Heart Of The Congos to date."

DEAD C, THE Unknowns LP
2021 restock; LP version. "Some bands struggle to transcend their initial mythos, those stories that introduce them to the public eye. But The Dead C is a notable exception. They appeared in 1986 under a cloud of mystery, their unconventional location (South Island, New Zealand) helping to fuel their erratic sound. Name-dropped through the nineties by groups like Sonic Youth and Yo La Tengo, they gained influence and acclaim but never strayed from their original mainlined performing technique, which can sound like chaos to the casual listener. What kind of a world greets them and their new album Unknowns in 2020? New Zealand culture is better known throughout the world, not to mention a low-virus paradise. Yes, isolated as in the past, but this time for being a nation of efficacy in tackling a public health crisis. But what about the rest of the world? The music of Mssrs. Robbie Yates, Bruce Russell and Michael Morley endures, partially because their errant sounds, once so alienating, now feel like they've been made flesh in a large part of the modern-day world. Continuing to delve inwards for inspiration with tin ears towards trends, styles and technique, The Dead C forge onward. Unpolished, dusty and gritty, these three have again taken two guitars and drums, a combo which has less to say than ever, and leave the listener stunned. Unknowns has Morley slurring over spiraling dissemblance, with tracks ricocheting from intense to assaultive to drained, yet consistently magnificent. As reliable as ever, The Dead C are firmly grounded as an unassailable Truth."

D.A.F. Produkt der Deutsch-Amerikanischen Freundschaft LP
2021 restock. 180 gram LP version. Bureau B reissues the first Deutsch-Amerikanische Freundschaft album, originally released in 1979. True D.A.F. connoisseurs will, of course, be aware of the early phase of the Düsseldorf-Wuppertal combo. But most fans of the subsequently world-famous duo may well be taken aback when confronted with their debut album: forceful synth bass sounds, snappy rhythms, Gabi Delgado and leather all conspicuously absent. In their place, pure instrumental, unstructured noise-rock, played by long-haired and moustachioed types. A band can barely have undergone a more extreme metamorphosis. Gabi Delgado joined the band (hitherto comprising Robert Görl, Kurt Dahlke/Pyrolator, Wolfgang Spelmans and Michael Kemner), before the band discarded the name of YOU and christened themselves Deutsch-Amerikanische Freundschaft. And he was also on board for the first recording sessions at Studio 56 in Mühlheim. Disappointed with the results ("too close to Schlager," the band thought) and "less than happy" with Delgado's vocals and lyrics (as Pyrolator, responsible for electronics, noted), the group dispensed with Delgado's services. Yet the creative will was undiminished: "We really wanted to make a record. All the Düsseldorf bands -- Male, Mittagspause -- already had an album out, everyone except us," and with the singer now gone, an instrumental album was the only option. In the wake of the studio debacle, the decision was made to take the recording into their own hands. A tape machine and two microphones were set up in Wolfgang Spelmans' living room and ten days of unbounded improvisation ensued. And thus it was completed, Produkt der Deutsch-Amerikanischen Freundschaft: 22 tracks, ranging from 19 seconds to three minutes in length. The influence of Can is clearly audible. Considering the fact that other prominent noise-rock bands such as Chrome, Flipper or even Sonic Youth recorded similar music at a much later date, this "product of Deutsch-Amerikanische Freundschaft" should certainly be recognized as a pioneering work. Possibly even the first noise-rock album the world had seen or heard. Was the world ready for such brutal, nihilistic sounds in the late 1970s? The world of record companies was not. Unable to find a label, D.A.F. proved to be not only pioneers of noise, but also pioneers of DIY. They found help from the local bank, with Pyrolator putting up his car for credit amounting to 3000 Marks. A logical step, as he was already running a cassette label called Warning Records (later becoming Ata Tak). Produkt Der Deutsch-Amerikanischen Freundschaft was the first LP on the label and was given the catalog number WR 01/LP/1979. Sales were so good that Pyrolator was able to pay back his loan quickly. Printed innersleeve with photos and notes by Carsten Friedrichs.

OH SEES The Cool Death Of Island Raiders LP
2021 repress. "The denizens of Castle Face are not afraid to get their shins dirty mucking around in the stacks and they're well aware of an out-of-press gap of Oh Sees releases right before 2006 when they started the label with Sucks Blood. They're rectifying that and first among these is The Cool Death of Island Raiders, a particularly dusty gem that merits another look. Kicking off the record with what should have been the hit of the summer that year but for the hard C in the title, 'The Gilded Cunt' seems to clearly preface Oh Sees' later psych-skewed pop sensibilities. Chirping birds, gently lapping tempos and the nascent harmonization of Bridgid Dawson and John Dwyer detail a definitive highlight of their early quiet period of the band. The tree hangs heavy with Patrick Mullins' handiwork, manning the musical saw, drums, and an assortment of homemade electronics. It seemed a bit radical to be so quiet about it, but the tunes are total ear-worms among the assorted drones, cut-up bits of tape noise, and mellow front porch-vibes, and the whole thing hangs together in a lovely hand-made way, helped in no small part by Dave Sitek's production (he would later work on Master's Bedroom as well). 'We flew Brigid out a fresh woman and literally sent her home on a plane with a trash bag of her clothes' says Dwyer. Evidently the whole record was accidentally erased at some point right around when the photo on the back of the jacket was taken, which makes it all the more remarkable that the result sounds so casually and confidently careworn."

THEE OH SEES Grave Blockers LP
2021 repress. "Encased in a brown paper wrapping like a forgotten bit of smut from behind the beaded curtain, this unassuming disc is a time-capsule back to John Dwyer's early SF days, janglingly fingerpicked wisps of melody and electronics baking in the all-too anemic sunshine of San Francisco's elusive summer. Like a seashell to the ear, one can hear within it Baker Beach bike ride excursions, holding court and gently harassing passers-by on a Haight street stoop, and midnight rambles with friends from out of town, daring the sun to come up. Somewhere chronologically between the folky whisper of Songs About Death And Dying and the recently reissued Cool Death Of Island Raiders, this one's been vexing to find for way too long and Castle Face has decided to give it 'the treatment'. May it awaken the gentle glow of possibility dappled with the dancing shadow of danger that it stirs around this castle."

OBIOLS & KAYYAK, ARNAU Chang'an EP (RMX by Kalabrese, MLiR) 12"
Arnau Obiols and KAYYAK met just last year through their girlfriends who happen to be sisters. The energy during the production of these songs came to life and resulted in the two originals on this record. Folkloric tradition with modern programming, acoustic drums, percussion with acid, echo feedback and psychedelic sounds all infused by funky basslines. In addition, they invited Kalabrese and MLiR to do a remix. Both of them being artists close at heart for Arnau and Kay.

WEB WEB X MAX HERRE WEB MAX CD
The fourth album by Web Web, WEB MAX, is a great spiritual jazz work -- sometimes floating, sometimes soulful, always intense and a wonderful homage to early seventies jazz. Web Web mastermind Roberto Di Gioia is accompanied for the first time by German rapper/producer Max Herre as a composer, musician, and producer. Both came together with guest musicians such as Mulatu Astatke, Yusef Lateef, Brandee Younger, Charles Tolliver (Strata East), and others to deliver a virtuoso masterpiece. WEB MAX is the fourth album in four years by the internationally highly acclaimed Web Web quartet, consisting of keyboarder, pianist Roberto Di Gioia, saxophonist Tony Lakatos, bassist Christian von Kaphengst, and drummer Peter Gall, all of them long-time performers of highest virtuosity, signed to Michael Reinboth's Compost Records. To give consideration to the foregoing, the jazz sessions that has been set up by Herre and Di Gioia lead to the Web Web project, so you can call WEB MAX as "The Prequel".

"His desperate need for a torrent, a precipice, a railroad track -- no matter what, but instantly -- made him appeal for the very last time to the topography of his past. And when, in front of him, a grinding whine came from behind the hump of the side street, swelling to full growth when it had overcome the grade, distending the night, already illuminating the descent with two ovals of yellowish light, about to hurtle downward -- then, as if it were a dance, as if the ripple of that dance had carried him to stage center, under this growing, grinning, mega-thundering mass, his partner in a crashing cracovienne, this thundering iron thing, this instantaneous cinema of dismemberment -- that's it, drag me under, tear at my frailty -- I'm travelling flattened, on my smacked-down face -- hey, you're spinning me, don't rip me to pieces - you're shredding me, I've had enough... Zigzag gymnastics of lightning, spectogram of a thunderbolt's split seconds -- and the film of life had burst." One-time pressing, vinyl-only release; originally released on cassette in 2019. DAVIDSON TRIO, LOWELL Lowell Davidson Trio LP
Restocked. ESP-Disk' present a Lowell Davidson Trio's self-titled album, originally released in 1965. On Ornette Coleman's recommendation, ESP-Disk' owner Bernard Stollman signed up pianist Lowell Davidson (then majoring in biochemistry at Harvard) for this album without having heard him play. Davidson came to New York and got to work with the elite rhythm section of drummer Milford Graves and bassist Gary Peacock, both stalwarts of the ESP catalog. The interplay among the members of the trio is dazzling, but in all ways the pianist is the star of the album. His playing inevitably drew comparisons to Cecil Taylor (can't blame the critics too much, as there just weren't that many pianists going this far out in 1965, so there weren't many comparisons available), but he is his own man stylistically, and puts more space around his notes. He's equally likely to unleash complexly intertwining two-handed runs, spicy dissonances, shimmering Impressionism, or poignant lyricism. The only recording ever approved for release by Davidson, it remains fresh and exciting fifty years later. Personnel: Lowell Davidson - piano; Gary Peacock - bass; Milford Graves - percussion. Recorded July 27, 1965. Engineering by Art Crist. Photography by George Klabin. Original cover design by Baby Jerry. Tape transfer and mastering by Steven Walcott. Design and layout by Miles Bachman and Michael Sanzone."... The composition of the trio is also quite inspired. There appears to have been a symbiotic relationship between the other players -- bassist Gary Peacock, percussionist Milford Graves -- and the pianist. Davidson's superior harmonic sense is beautifully reflected in the manner in which Graves, for instance, employs dynamics to explore tonal colors and rhythmic textures. Although he displays this exquisite sensibility throughout very good examples of this are heard on 'L' and 'Stately.' Peacock achieves no less a state of rarified elegance playing both pizzicato and con arco, especially on 'Ad Hoc.' Note his and Graves' rumbling bass, punctuated by bright splashes on various cymbals, a perfect foil for Davidson's complex forays into the heart of the song's theme." -- Raul d'Gama Rose, All About Jazz

LOGOTHETIS, ANESTIS Hor!-Spiel / Nekrologlog 1961 / Fantasmata 1960 LP
Reduced price, last copies. The Greek avant-garde composer Anestis Logothetis was noted for his pioneering tape techniques as well as developing his own notation system for composition that incorporated visual symbols meant to be interpreted by the performers. "Hör!-spiel" / Nekrologlog 1961 / Fantasmata 1960 collects three of his most famous works, realized in Vienna where he spent much of the 1940s-1960s. After completing studies at the music academy there, in the 1950s Logothetis became enamored of 20th century composers like John Cage and Earle Brown, and moved away from traditional composition for orchestras and performers in favor of fully electronic composition in the late '50s. A groundbreaking composer and electronic musician, Logothetis has long been underappreciated by the world of avant-garde and electronic musicians but Fantôme Phonographique seeks to rectify that issue with this brilliant release.

CONNORS, LOREN Unaccompanied Acoustic Guitar Improvisations Vol. 2 LP
"Here is the second volume of protean solo improvisations recorded by Loren Connors in his artist's garret in New Haven, Connecticut. Like the first volume, it was committed to tape and pressed to vinyl in 1979. Never having seen a copy of this record, and having pressed it before we discovered a master cassette exists, this is as good a transfer as can be had for the nonce. Loren's chair creaks like rusty crow and the amount of random tapping and thumping during the original session just about drove Jim O'Rourke and Jeremy Lemos crazy when they were working on it. But they persisted, and we all owe them a debt of gratitude. Although most people cannot help themselves from believing all nine volumes of this series are of a piece, the second volume sounds quite different from its predecessor. For one thing, it is truly solo. There's no sign of Kath Bloom's voice or recorder to be found. The guitar attack is much more active here, as is the vocalizing. Loren gives off a vibe most easily compared to Bud Powell's manner of vocally emphasizing his piano runs. This style of accompaniment has much less of a blues-counterpoint to it, serving more as way to amplify the strange melodic arc of the guitar as it moves through dark space. Some of the instrumental phrases and tag-lines here are surprisingly similar to elements of Eugene Chadbourne's Parachute-era solo improvisations, although Loren is usually reluctant to describe his efforts in terms of overt avant gardism. He was, however, cavorting and collaborating during this period with known avant gardists, so perhaps we are best left to draw our own aesthetic conclusions from just listening. Whatever it is he was doing in the dark of Daggett Street, I think we can agree it was incredible. And if you can't dig it, well... have a nice life." --Byron Coley, 2021

PINK FLOYD Interstellar Overdrive LP
Limited restock, last copies... "Interstellar Overdrive" is an instrumental composition written in 1966 and is on Pink Floyd's 1967 debut album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, clocking in at almost ten minutes in length. "Interstellar Overdrive" was one of the first psychedelic instrumental improvisations ever recorded by a rock band. It was seen as Pink Floyd's first foray into space rock. It has also been described as an experimental and psychedelic as well as an example of proto-prog. Waters once called the song "an abstract piece". Not connected to pop music, a long improvisatory quality. The stereo version of the song has an organ moving from speaker to speaker, the effect is not on the mono version of the song, where it gains extra organ and guitar sounds, in fact the organ is very prominent during the first minute of the mono version-along with some special effects-but inaudible in the stereo mix. You will find both mono and stereo versions off the LP plus a rare edit (French only released at the time) and a long freak out version that clocks in at 16:49.

HAWTIN, RICHIE Concept 1 96 : 12 3LP
Richie Hawtin on the release: "This release marked a real shift in my production style in 1996, and was the start of a significant chapter in my recording career. Everything was handled independently from design to distribution to a subscription service to accompany it. Concept 1 was recorded in isolation at a time when I was not allowed to enter the USA and with everything going on in the world at this moment, it felt like the right time to finally release this project to a larger audience. Without the year of experimentation around the recording process of Concept 1 in 1995, I would never have gotten to the reduction that I was able to achieve later on the recording style of Plastikman Consumed. In that way this is as an important album for me than any of my Plastikman albums." Originally released in 1996. Includes bonus track: "Concept 1 96:12 00:00". ROEDELIUS Drauf Und Dran LP
Hans-Joachim Roedelius is a pioneer in in the field of electronic music. He explains Drauf Und Dran: "The tracks released on this album originate from various creative periods of my career. They were recorded while I played Bösendorfer, Steinway and Yamaha grand pianos, and even my Young Chang Upright. They are not, however, in the chronological order in which they were recorded because I feel that the within and with the selection of tracks and with how the structures are strung together and the nature of each interpretation, the attentiveness to what one is hearing refocuses of its own accord. In a manner of speaking, this is intended to musically 'outwit' established listening habits and to expand and maintain the listener's attentiveness. I do this because my music is not about the perfect performance of long-popular models and producing masterly recordings. My actual profession is that of physical therapist, masseur and palliative caregiver. I'm musical, but have no formal training; my musical ignorance necessitated that I, as it were, make a virtue of embarking on practical adventures into the realm of sound experimentation. The wide array of racket-producing tools, such as hammers, adapted metal plates, rods and springs, the sounds of food processors and the other things I used in and with the band Kluster at the start of my career allowed me to create kind of 'noise factory' that was tagged 'musical Actionism.' That Actionism got on my nerves ever more as time passed, and, thank God, that led me right to the piano; it, or rather its expressive possibilities, is now my main interest. Drauf Und Dran is meant as a milestone and a guidepost, as a kind of musical peephole through the 'iron' curtain of what is familiar, perfected and conventional in music and into a sound universe that has officially only yet been explored cursorily. Varying piano string vibrations create interferences, overtones and undertones in the fading reverberation of pointedly accentuated."

POLLARD, ROBERT Waved Out LP
2021 repress. "Robert Pollard's Waved Out gets the 20th anniversary reissue treatment with newly re-mastered audio and a beautiful blue vinyl pressing. The Guided By Voices captain's second solo album from 1998 captures the more eclectic side of his songwriting. Here, he brilliantly compresses prog, psych, and post-punk ideas into magnificent two-minute pop songs. Wire, early Genesis, Nilsson Schmilsson, Lennon's White Album songs, Blue Öyster Cult, XTC, and Captain Beefheart: it's all here, condensed into brilliant songs like 'Subspace Biographies' and 'Whiskey Ships.' A lot's been made of Pollard's spontaneous and prolific songwriting methods, and most of that's true, though he works much harder on his songs than even he likes to admit. With Waved Out, he seemed to grow more comfortable and ambitious in formal studio-type settings, so that anyone who carps about 'unfinished arrangements' and 'shitty production values' ought to be pretty happy with this record. This doesn't apply to 'Caught Waves Again,' where he sings into a boombox over a tape of GBV guitarist Doug Gillard's noodling. Nor does it apply to a touching song about tragedies in Pollard's hometown of Dayton, Ohio, called 'People Are Leaving,' where he puts two separate melodies over instruments by collaborator Stephanie Sayers. In addition to Gillard, a few other GBV personalities appear on the record, Jim Pollard, Tobin Sprout and Jim MacPherson, then of The Breeders. But the bulk of the record, including a fair bit of the drumming, is all Robert Pollard."

VA Habibi Funk: An Eclectic Selection From The Arab World (Part 2) CD
"This compilation of songs is not meant as a historic reflection of popular music of the 'Arab world.' It is a very personal selection of songs we grew to like at Habibi Funk. It is music that historically never existed as a unified musical genre. We think it's important to make this distinction and to have the listener understand that the majority of the music on this compilation does not come from the highly famous names of the musical spectrum of North Africa and the Middle East. Instead, the final body compiled for this record consists of some -- at least for us -- niche-y pearls and often overlooked artists; resulting in a diverse range of styles from Egyptian organ funk, disco sounds from Morocco, an example of the lively reggae scene of Libya, political songs from Lebanon, soundtrack music from Algeria, a musical union between Kenya and Oman, and much more. The photo we chose for this cover somehow could be seen as an allegory of the sounds we feature on the label. It depicts Algerian composer Ahmed Malek at an ice cream bar during his stay in Japan for the World Expo in Osaka, 1970. He later said that his visit to Japan and especially the manga culture left a distinctive mark on the way he created his own compositions. With this in mind, it feels as a suiting visual representation for the music on this compilation. Accordingly, the compilation you are holding in your hands offers a much wider range of music than just funk influenced sounds. Sure, it brings back Fadoul, who we have already dedicated a full-length album to. He was the mystical Moroccan singer who -- influenced by the sounds of James Brown -- created his own musical vision full of energy but also still very intimate. Another artist we have featured before is Ahmed Malek, the grand Algerian soundtrack composer, whose music is largely connected by a distinct feeling of melancholic beauty or Hamid Al Shaeri, the Egyptian hit producer whose track 'Ayonha' was probably the most widely appreciated track off our first compilation. But we have also learned that this format of a compilation can serve as a medium to introduce artists to our audience, who we are planning to dedicate full length releases to in the near future, such as Ibrahim Hesnawi. Hesnawi is the father of reggae music in Libya -- a genre still widely popular in Libya -- and whose presence in the country is commonly connected to the rhythmic similarities of reggae with some form of Libyan folkloric music. Nahib Alhoush is another Libyan artist, whose musical output we will spotlight in the near future. In the 1970s, he was the co-founder of Free Music, one of the first Libyan bands introducing western influences into their music. After the band stopped performing together he started an at least equally successful solo career under his own name. When I got into Arabic music around five or six years ago, I knew pretty much nothing about it. Realistically, I still know very, very little about it and I'm by no means an expert. I just had the opportunity to visit the region frequently, trying to learn about music I might like. Most of the bands, I happen to enjoy, were fairly obscure and therefore a lot of the music on this compilation seems to be largely forgotten. After sharing many of the old records and tapes online through mixes, I have realized that there is a huge disparity between the interest in the music on the one hand and its availability on the other. All tracks on this compilation are fully licensed, most directly from the artist or in the case of artists, who are deceased licensed from the artist's family. There are two exceptions: Hamid Al Shaeri's track was licensed from SLAM! as the label is still active under the name Sonar. Zohra's 'Badala Zamana' from the great Belgian label MTMU, who has reissued this track under license from the producer on 7" format before."

PINCH & SHACKLETON Pinch & Shackleton 2LP
2021 repress. Gatefold 2LP version. Pinch & Shackleton's self-titled release finds the two dubstep pioneers at the top of their game. The deadly concision, the rhythmic punch and dramatic timing, the spry, side-to-side detailing of a cavernous stage, the crisp-biscuit vocal sampling and Middle Eastern percussion -- their sound signatures are not so much totalled as squared. Truly an album, the music is multi-leveled -- dark as anything at times, but engrossingly varied and emotionally shaded, always on the move.

WANDT, NIKLAS Balearische Bibliothek 12"
Balearische Bibliothek is Niklas Wandt's first release on Italic. An EP with four tracks --and after Erdtöne (Kryptox, 2020) only his second solo release under his own name. He, too, learned at the Düsseldorf Salon Des Amateurs, builds his pieces on American electro and Italian cosmic -- in BPM numbers from the lower middle; and where he needs something, he picks it up: fearlessly even with Goa, fusion, radio voice or Krautrock electronics of the so-called Berlin School; only: Wandt sits behind the instruments, if he uses a sample, then on the micro level to build himself an instrument from it. The library is not a labyrinthine collage work, but a supple architecture of impression. Niklas Wandt is no stranger. He is in demand in the younger Rhineland scene, especially as a drummer and percussionist. Most recently, he has released two albums with Jan Schulte/Wolf Müller on Growing Bin and an EP each with Sascha Funke in 2019 and 2020. He has played with Stabil Elite, and is currently working with Neuzeitliche Bodenbeläge and Transport. In addition, he hosts the radio program jazz & world for Westdeutscher Rundfunk. Niklas Wandt lives in Berlin today.

GROUPER Grid Of Points LP
2021 repress. "Received a 7.8 rating from Pitchfork. Not long after recording her tenth album Ruins, Liz Harris traveled to Wyoming to work on art and record music. She found herself drawn towards the pairing of skeletal piano phrasing with spare, rich bursts of vocal harmony. A series of stark songs emerged, minimal and vulnerable, woven with emotive silences. Inspired by 'the idea that something is missing or cold,' the pieces float and fade like vignettes, implying as much as they reveal. She describes them as 'small texts hanging in space,' impressions of mortality, melody, and the unseen -- fleeting beauty, interrupted. Grid Of Points stands as a concise and potently poetic addition to the Grouper catalog. 'Grid Of Points is a set of songs for piano and voice. I wrote these songs over a week and a half; they stopped abruptly when I was interrupted by a high fever. Though brief, it is complete. The intimacy and abbreviation of this music allude to an essence that the songs lyrics speak more directly of. The space left after matter has departed, a stage after the characters have gone, the hollow of some central column, missing.' --Liz Harris"

PORVENIR OSCURO Asquerosa Humanidad LP
NYC's Porvenir Oscuro are back with their first full length after a very distant demo and 7". Made up of 13 tracks, Asquerosa Humanidad doesn't let the foot off the gas for a second. It is relentless pogo inducing attack that falls somewhere between Fertil Miseria, RIP and early Chaos UK. With tunes full of aggression, melody and fuzz in equal measure, laying the foundation for vocalist Sara to spit her vile. Lyrically the album deals with modern day frustration, showing little faith in humankind and a massive disrespect towards authority like any self-respecting person should. While stand firmly in the punk terrain Porvenir Oscuro borrows from the rich worldwide sounds of the underground delivering a fully formed sound and aesthetic which is their own. Asquerosa Humanidad sleeve, labels and double sided A2 poster were designed by guitarist Gage Allison. Recorded, mixed and mastered by Sasha Stroud at Artifact Audio.

MODESELEKTOR Social Distancing 12"
The second EP being released in the wake of the recent Extended mixtape (MONKEY 111CD/LP), Social Distancing showcases Modeselektor's talent for bridging the gap between hip-hop and the rave. The title track reunites the Berlin duo with Flohio, who first appeared on their 2018 single "Wealth". Social Distancing is the end result, and while the swaggering cut could easily carry an EP on its own, Modeselektor have decided to up the ante by inviting a talented crew of friends and colleagues to put their own spin on the track. Brainfeeder affiliate Little Snake transforms "Social Distancing" with his corroded beats and playful sound design, while looking closer to home in Berlin, Modeselektor tapped frequent partners in crime (and Spandau natives) FJAAK, who cooked up a rowdy bass-techno hybrid. Like all good hip-hop EPs, Social Distancing comes with an acapella version of the title track, but here, Flohio's rhymes have been maniacally stretched, smashed and warped by veteran producer Richard Devine. Rounding out the record is a sleazy, static-laced techno reimagining of "Social Distancing".

EATON, WILLIAM Music By William Eaton LP
2021 repress. "Originally released in 1978, Music By William Eaton is a private-press album from the accomplished experimental stringed instrument builder. The atmospheric recording techniques, mixed with a hint of Fahey/Takoma-lineage make for a listening experience akin to the mountain-scape drawing represented on the album cover. The experience may seem simple at first, but like any great trip in nature, new details consistently reveal themselves upon each listen. 'When I started building instruments, playing guitar took on a whole new dimension. From the conception to the birth of each instrument, new layers of meaning unfolded. Cycles, connections and interdependencies became apparent as I contemplated the growth of trees from seed to old age, and the transformation from raw wood to the building of a musical instrument. I sought out quiet natural environments to play and listen to the 'voice' of my 6 string, 12 string, 26 string (Elesion Harmonium) and double neck quadraphonic electric guitar. Deep canyons contained a beautiful resonant quality and echo. A starlit night with a full moon provided all the reflection and endless space by which to project music into the cosmos. The sound of a bubbling stream and singing birds added a natural symphonic tapestry to a melody or chord pattern. As I perceived it, everything was participating in a serendipitous dance. Everything was part of the music. During this time, I decided to record an instrumental album of music. The idea was simple; it would be a series of tone poems with no titles or any information attached, only the words Music By William Eaton. While some of the songs evolved out of composed chord progressions, most of the songs were played spontaneously, only on the occasion of the recording. These improvised songs haven't been played since.' --William Eaton Recommended for fans of John Fahey, Harry Partch, Robbie Basho, Laraaji."

DO NASCIMENTO, FABIANO Ykytu LP
LP version. "Ykytu is Brasilian guitarist Fabiano do Nascimento's fourth album for Now-Again Records. Produced by Nascimento's longtime engineer Jason Hiller, this album is do Nascimento's first solo guitar album and, like his previous album, Preludio, is reliant on do Nascimento's own compositions, with a little help from like-minded musical travelers. In keeping with the trajectory of his previous albums, including Dança dos Tempos and Tempo dos Mestres, Ykytu follows folkloric Brasilian music, Brasilian jazz, bossa-nova and samba as experienced through the mind and able fingers of an expansive musician, this time in a minimalist, meditative manner. 'Even though this album is a bit experimental and even abstract at times, It is meant to be a calming and easy listening experience,' do Nascimento offers. 'I choose to keep the songs and arrangements intentionally very bare and stripped down. Just adding few layers and colors here and there.' The album came together during the Covid-19 pandemic, but one hears anything but isolation in Ykytu's grooves. Do Nascimento performed the album almost entirely with a Strimon Timeline pedal, with a few loops and overdubs, and the result is a full-fledged, if quiet and subtle, conversation Do Nascimento has with himself, as he ruminates about this stage in his life, in his musical journey, and his music's place in the world. Ykytu means 'wind' in the indigenous Brazilian Guarani language. In his own way, as he was quarantined in Los Angeles, Do Nascimento has succeeded in journeying outwards, in heeding the call of the open world. At the same time, he has remained true to the spirit and calling of his forebears, hearing their whispers, amplifying them, augmenting them, and allowing them to flow outwards."

"Morgen's self-titled 1969 album is the sole release by the NYC band led by songwriter/vocalist Steve Morgen. Now-Again's Reserve edition of the release pairs the album with previously-unreleased songs, alternate takes and instrumentals for a de¬finitive triple CD reissue. That casual listeners have never heard of this late 60s masterpiece is by any measure a musical injustice. Morgen offers a portal to a dream space where the expansive, artful touches never prevent the band members from pummeling their instruments like their lives depended on it. Paul Major, perhaps the first Morgen evangelist, likens the album's immediacy to that of Hendrix, stating 'Morgen was one of the records that came closest to giving me that same kind of thrill on that level. It blew my mind!' Geoffrey Weiss, Now-Again's nomination for World's Greatest Record Collector, states '...unlike 95% of the rare psychedelic records that people celebrate it sounds like they were good musicians who were well rehearsed and had worked out this sound very intentionally. Morgen has a kind of power -- you really can't compare it to anything.' The band, and Morgen's arc were -- cribbing Kurt Vonnegut -- unstuck in time. It took 50 years for Steve Morgen's belief, for instance, that an alternate, superior version of his stellar 'Purple' was recorded in 1968. It sees release here, alongside other takes of songs from the album, including a version of 'Beggin' Your Pardon (Ms. Joan)' on which Morgen's fiery guitarist Murray Shiffrin sings lead and songs the band recorded as possibilities for the album, before settling on their dense, hazy vision and etching an indelible entry into the psychedelic canon."

FORTNAM, CRAIG Ark LP
LP version. All at sea. Anchorless. Adrift. Ark is the first album to be released as a Craig Fortnam solo album. As the composer for North Sea Radio Orchestra and Arch Garrison, Craig has always made music with meaning, emotional heft and depth of personality. Ark is his most personal and intensely realized record. Craig's music has been described as intrinsically English with place and the natural world being recurring motifs. In Arch Garrison the chalk downs loom large and become the canvas. For Ark the sea and the east coast of the UK become symbolic of uncertainty, tumult, pain and change. The place names are evocative of a beautiful bleakness and vulnerability. The coastline is unstoppably eroded by and into the unknowable vastness of the ocean. In the last few years, Craig has lost his brother, mother. and dear friend Tim Smith of Cardiacs. Some of the pieces and themes on Ark were written as requiems of a sort. Craig's musical stock has been rising constantly over the years with growing recognition of his talent and unique style. The Bitter Lay, released in 2020 was critically well received. A 2019 collaboration interpreting songs from Robert Wyatt's Rock Bottom brought Craig to a wider audience and was endorsed and enjoyed by Robert himself. While Ark is thus far unique as a Fortnam solo album members of North Sea Radio Orchestra are present and correct. Long standing fans will hear characteristic harmonic tones traceable from Purcell, to Vaughan Williams, Britten, early Pink Floyd, and latterly Cardiacs. The players on Ark are: Craig Fortnam - voice, guitars, organ, synth, piano, percussion; Nicky Baigent - Bb clarinet, bass clarinet; Luke Crooks - bassoon; Harry Escott - cello; James Larcombe - piano; Brian Wright - violin, viola; Hugh Wilkinson - vibraphone.

LE TOUGH, MANO At The Moment CD
Irish producer and DJ Mano Le Tough releases his new record, At The Moment, on DJ Koze's Pampa Records. After more than a decade of releases and touring, Mano has spent the past year at home in Zurich, rearing his young family and focusing on the positives of 14 months without performing, amid the uncertainty of the pandemic. In the face of horror, Mano channeled inspiration. With At The Moment, the follow-up to 2015's Trails (PERMVAC 142CD/LP), those struggles have produced a record which balances the ambivalence of the current moment, with wistful streaks of unguarded optimism. At The Moment shows Mano's modes of expression evolving too. The synths and rhythms common to earlier works are now complemented with less familiar sounds and influences. Jangling guitars and sun-bleached chords envelop his own tender, plaintive vocals in a dappled wash of summery pop. Another track grounds overlapping melodies and sci-fi soundtrack pads with hip hop beats, creating a hypnotic slice of slinky retrofuturism. Where there is reflection, there is also a sense of being unafraid."I've always liked that Mallarmé quote, 'poetry is the language of crisis,'" says Mano. "It's hard to make good music about everything being amazing. Everything is going great -- who wants to listen to that? BAJOU AND TONY JOE WHITE, BOOZOO Aspen Colorado 10"
The actual first link-up between the US country legend Tony Joe White and the Nuremberg based downbeat producer duo Boozoo Bajou happened in early 2003 when Warner Music US approached Boozoo Bajou with a free-pick to remix a track from their huge back catalog. They immediately went for the iconic Tony Joe White classic "Rainy Night in Georgia" and gave this long-time favorite their remix treatment. The personal positive feedback from Tony Joe White himself for that remix was overwhelming and everybody was set to continue. Up next was a warm 2004 summer night in Hamburg, Germany with the actual location being the backstage area of the Fabrik Club. Tony Joe White just left the stage after performing a breathtaking set looking back at his long-lasting career which started in the late sixties. After speaking on the phone various times and exchanging ideas by email during the months before this is the first ever meeting in person. For the next few entertaining hours, they enjoyed a few beers and the plan to work together was nailed down with all involved people having a smile on their faces when they left. With "Keep Going" the first outcome of their collaboration was going to see the light of day on the Boozoo Bajou album Dust My Broom released in 2005 on !K7. Afterwards it took a 16-year long break before the second part of their joint recordings is going to appear on a limited edition 10" vinyl. Originally recorded back in 2005 it is a re-lick of Tony Joe White's wonderful 1969 tune "Aspen Colorado" which was newly sung with additional blues harp and guitar by the man himself on a soulful laidback Boozoo Bajou beat. After the tragic death of Tony Joe White in October 2018 it was rather vague if this was going to happen but with the grateful help of his son Jody Boozoo Bajou can finally present this musical gem to the public. Includes a cosmic mix by Frank Mollena.

MCCANN, MOLLY Das Jahr 2020 CD
"Das Jahr 2020 is the first published recording of Molly McCann, my older sister of two-and-a-half years. After encouraging my sister to record her piano playing for years, she embarked on her first recording project with Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel's Das Jahr ("The Year", 1841), a groundbreaking cycle of twelve thematically and harmonically interlocked character pieces depicting the twelve months of the year. Putting aside her usual toil for perfection, Molly embraced a larger conceptual experience, both personal and musical in nature: to learn and perform each piece of the cycle in the corresponding calendar month, knowing the accelerated timeline would push her outside of her comfort zone and require a renewed approach to and understanding of time. With a creaky, slightly out-of-tune upright piano and her cellphone's built-in microphone, the monthly self-recordings began in January of 2020." --Sean McCann"And so we try to ornament and prettify our lives -- that is the advantage of artists, that they can strew such beautifications about, for those nearby to take an interest in." --Fanny Hensel on composing Das Jahr, Letter to August Elsasser, Nov. 11, 1841Includes eight-page insert with program notes; edition of 200.

J-ZONE Concussion Percussion LP
"Pressed on white vinyl. J-Zone's fifth drum break library, Concussion Percussion, brings together the individual strong suits of its predecessors for an all-in-one groove blizzard, the NYC drummer's most complete and versatile to date. 33 breaks deep, it's nearly double the size of 2019's Break Bonanza and 2015's Backyard Breaks and just tips the scales over 2018's Guerrilla Drums and the inaugural Lunch Breaks from 2014. After speaking with numerous producers and discovering each had a different favorite, J sat at the drums intent on putting a new spin on the best attributes of each one and throwing in some experimentation. The random commentary and human error of J learning his craft on Lunch Breaks shows up, but so does the eventual precision of Break Bonanza. The rhythmic and tempo experimentation of Guerrilla Drums resurfaces, but the hard-smacking one-two of Backyard Breaks also remains. Then there's stuff unique to Concussion Percussion: free-wheeling mallet grooves, psychedelic ride cymbal effects and the 'something outta nothing' use of crappy coffee beans for quirky snare drum sounds. With Madlib's recent sampling of 'Ode To Sloppy Joe' (from Lunch Breaks) on his single, 'Road of the Lonely Ones,' the super-producer joins Broken Bells, Alchemist, Prince Paul, Marco Polo and countless others who've sampled J-Zone break kits. J has also done studio work for Danger Mouse (Karen O, Michael Kiwanuka), Lord Finesse, Binky Griptite (The Dap-Kings), Show (DITC), Pharoahe Monch, Adrian Quesada (The Black Pumas), DJ Nu-Mark and many more, in addition to his own bands (The Du-Rites, Manzel, The Zone Identity) and his tenure as the tour/studio drummer for soul singer Ben Pirani."

ROLLING STONES, THE On Tour '64 CD
1964 was the year when the Rolling Stones broke through on the international stage and by this time, they were an outstanding live band. Their sets contained an appetizing selection of R&B covers and their gigs were increasingly frenzied affairs. All the tracks were recorded live (except for the Stones advert for Rice Krispies) and in front of audiences everywhere from the sedate BBC radio studios to a full-blown riot in the Netherlands. Included are their groundbreaking live US TV appearances and the complete NME Pollwinners Wembley show with sleeve notes by Ruby Tuesday and full credits.

CLUNE, MEGAN ALICE If You Do CD
Megan Alice Clune's If You Do is a work of restrained ecstasy. Drawing on her interests in extended minimalist traditions, especially explorations into variable tunings featured in the works orbiting those involved in the Theatre Of Eternal Music, Clune devises a record of constant deepening. Each piece unfolds into the next, and whilst existing individually, they also operate as a collected mass of sound. If You Do is a constant, almost stream of consciousness, flow of voice, drones, keyboards and electronics. From Megan Alice Clune; "On the 9th of August 2020 I had a dream I wrote an opera. I had been unable to write much music since February, when I returned from three-months in Tokyo where this album was initially conceived. It was possibly the longest creative break I have undergone in the last five years. But suddenly, the small melodies I had been singing closely into my microphone late at night, quietly so my neighbors wouldn't hear, took on a larger scale, and one that seemed to echo the scale engendered by 2020. The confinement to the home, the epic events going on outside. My small, timid voice filtered through a myriad of technologies as I talked to friends, taught online; amplified, distorted, compressed, equalized. Sped up, slowed down as my Wi-Fi drops in and out. If You Do became an album for solo voice and an ensemble of technologies. An album about contorting the body (voice) through time (rhythm, pulse), repetition and form. The work is nostalgic for past futures: wishing for the technological optimism of the late '70s and early '80s, of Timothy Leary believing the computer would offer a liberation to the masses. A time before Big Tech, Big Data. It's a record made alone, dreaming of unmediated interaction with an audience that may never arrive . . . Back in Tokyo, I noticed how physical and digital spaces were being dislocated. I was wondering how we got here, thinking about where that leaves my music in light of this. I began collecting each of the track names from my surroundings -- things read or overheard or gathered both in Japan (the title If You Do came from a necklace found at Ohi Racecourse Flea Market) and, later, at home, online. As such, the album occupies an amorphous space. Within the genre of ambient music but only just. It creates a space that is still heavily mediated, but hopes to locate and communicate directly. Then, at my computer, stuck in a glitching, echoing loop, I was looking for signs to keep writing. I listened to Laurie Anderson's Big Science or David Bowie's Subterraneans or Underworld's Born Slippy..."

GUIDED BY VOICES Bee Thousand LP
2021 repress. "Little introduction should be required here. Let it suffice to say that Bee Thousand is arguably the best, or at least among the top Guided By Voices albums in a copious discography. Accordingly, the album has stacked up accolades over the years, including being voted #1 on Amazon.com's '100 Greatest Indie Rock Albums of All Time.' It's a staple of such lists, and has also placed highly on those curated by Spin, Pitchfork, Mojo and Rolling Stone. This new LP pressing, the first since the late '90s, honors the album's 20th anniversary. It features new (and definitely improved) mastering from John Golden, a substantial gatefold jacket with a previously unpublished Robert Pollard collage, and high-quality virgin vinyl from RTI. We've also included a free download card."

RUDIMENTARY PENI Great War LP
LP version. Recorded several years ago before Rudimentary Peni engaged in another mysterious hiatus, Great War has finally emerged to kiss the gas-tinged light of a mustered morn. Expanding on the skeletal sounds and subject of 2009's Wilfred Owen single the band has seen fit to concentrate on a more mechanized approach doing away with even more of the humanizing aspects in their music this time delivering ten painful familiar shards fraught with brittle anxiety and anguished simplicity. Great War cements new phase in the ever-crawling metamorphic madness that is Rudimentary Peni. The record comes with brand new Nick Blinko artwork.

BEC Pleasure Seeker 12"
Berlin based DJ and producer BEC returns to Pan-Pot's Second State for her sixth EP on the label featuring a remix by Pan-Pot themselves. Following 2019's Lost In Change and 2018's No Regrets EPs, Pleasure Seeker already marks her second release of the year. It's abundantly clear that few artists can compare to her consistency and quality when it comes to BEC's productions. Pulsating title track "Pleasure Seeker" kicks off the EP. This high-impact percussive workout that seizes listeners attention with galloping kicks and snare rolls. A commanding female vocal sample purrs the track's name over and over. Echoing electro tones twist and turn throughout, creating a complex, brooding energy. "The Truth" lays focus on a heavier rave-esque sound, enlisting a hammering rounded kick drum to open the track. From a distance, a single angelic note swirls and holds, then slowly builds. Sonic snaps fly back and forth in a scattered flurry of sound while a vocal sample with twisted distortion growls harsh truths. Dense rave chords slice through the noise to close out. "Reaching Nirvana" opens the B-side of the record, bringing an elaborate balance between peaceful melodies and powerful techno. Joyful and fast-paced major chords dance over a driving kick drum, while snares and hi-hats crash and sound in tandem with one another. A siren rings out amongst the breakdown before being rejoined by the melody to close. Pan-Pot's UKW remix of "Pleasure Seeker" is up next and closes down the vinyl, transforming the title track into a heavyweight techno roller. Bleating synth keys add pressure and intensity that surge throughout. Kick drums and snares take charge in percussion while cymbals flicker above. The vocal that once dominated the original cut has been chopped up and distorted.

FIRESIGN THEATRE Duke of Madness Motors DVD/BOOK
2021 repress. "Library of Congress inductees The Firesign Theatre are the legendary comedy group behind such albums as Don't Crush That Dwarf, Hand Me the Pliers and I Think We're All Bozos on This Bus. Between albums from 1970-1972 they also hosted three weekly radio series on L.A. radio: The Firesign Theatre Radio Hour Hour, Dear Friends and Let's Eat. Dear Friends spawned both a hit 1972 double-LP on Columbia Records -- which all their fans memorized -- and a twelve-LP syndicated series, with a dozen original broadcasts each spread over two LP sides -- printed in a radio-only edition of 100 copies and bootlegged like hell ever since. Bizarre, freewheeling and hilarious, the original artifacts are today a $1000 investment on eBay that most fans have only ever experienced through nth-generation cassette dubs or cruddy internet bootlegs. Now Seeland Records and The Firesign Theatre are finally reissuing them all -- and a whole lot more besides -- in an insanely comprehensive release that will have Fireheads everywhere crying 'Deputy Dan has no friends!' Duke of Madness Motors is a book/DVD package that takes a long-overdue trip through Firesign's Dear Friends golden age of improv radio, when hanging out with the Firesign Theatre was as easy as extending an antenna. The DVD is a data disc with over 80 hours of MP3s covering every episode of every Firesign broadcast, 1970-1972, all completely restored and remastered, plus all the syndicated programs and some juicy bonus extras. Meanwhile the book contains a 108-page, full-color history of the era including an 8000-word essay, new interviews with all of Firesign and their producer and engineer, full show rundowns, original scripts, found objects, vintage collages and more. For anyone who's ever sat enthralled by a Joe Frank story or a Jean Shepherd monologue, Duke of Madness Motors will be the perfect traveling companion, whether it's a cross-country trip, a commute, or just a walk from the kitchen to the living room. Consider it an 80-hour audiobook of Ulysses as filtered through Buck Rogers, The Hour of Power, and Negativland's Over the Edge -- sponsored by your good friends at James Joyce Chevrolet of Redondo Beach." "The Firesign Theatre is a treasure of cultural commentary in the most friendly terms... it's like having the American culture explode in front of you and land all over the wall." --George Carlin

FUNDAMENTAL KNOWLEDGE 1994-11 12"
On most days, Seilscheibenpfeiler is fully focused on the future, but every once in a while, we like to revisit the sounds that inspired the label in the first place. Back in 1994, Sebastian Szary was living with his parents in the suburbs of Berlin and making music in his bedroom, and although he'd adopted the name Fundamental Knowledge, he never actually got around to naming any of his tracks. Two unnamed tracks with befriended artist Dr. Rhythm were released in 1994 on the very first Seilscheibenpfeiler release, a rare collectors item nowadays. The rest of the tracks were just given numbers and for the most part, they sat on Szary's hard drive until just a couple of years ago, when "1994-2" and "1994-21" appeared on SSPB012. Now, Szary has once again dipped into his archives and unearthed "1994-11," a synth-driven tune that's arguably closer to a church recital than a techno party. Made with just a few pieces of equipment and recorded directly to tape, it's a surprisingly pensive piece, although its booming drums (which don't actually show up until the track is halfway through) take some obvious cues from late '80s/early '90s hip-hop. Alongside the original are a pair of newly crafted "1994-11" remixes, both of which significantly ramp up the energy level. Up first is Szary's Modeselektor partner Gernot Bronsert, who's billed here -- for the first time -- under a new solo moniker, Demokrator. Transforming the song into a hard-charging techno cut, his rework pairs bubbling, sci-fi melodies with slamming kicks, employing just enough corroded static to give the track a gritty warehouse feel. A similar vibe colors the remix from old friend Shed, who layers the ethereal melodies of the original over a rough-and-tumble assault of rave-ready breakbeats --fans of his work as Head High will definitely approve.

ROSALI No Medium LP
Repressed; LP version. "While the collection of songs on Philadelphia / Michigan musician Rosali's electrifying third album, No Medium, explores the often dark territory of loss, death, sexuality, self-sabotage, and addiction, there is a surprising lightness to its sonic being. Backed by members of the David Nance Group, Rosali (Long Hots, Wandering Shade, Monocot) wades through the emotional mire with infectious, earworm melodies led by her luminous voice. With their rich, raw instrumentation, these rock ballads sound like the resilience discovered in facing one's darkest moments, the assurance of the calm and clarity that comes after the storm. As she sings on the second track, 'Bones,' 'Through the darkness of the field / I walk through without yielding / To the rest of the feelings / I'm carrying.' With her confident song craft, Rosali illustrates the ability to push through, moving toward something greater without being destroyed by the weight of trauma. The influences for the sound of No Medium reflect this pairing of assured vulnerability, in the stylistic coherence of Bob Dylan's Desire, the tender delivery in Iain Matthews' Journey From Gospel Oak, the strut and swagger of Bowie's Hunky Dory, the ambition and beauty of Gene Clark's No Other, and the playful catharsis of Harry Nilsson's Nilsson Schmilsson. Engineered by James Shroeder and featuring Shroeder (Simon Joyner, DNG, Connor Oberst), Kevin Donahue (Simon Joyner), David Nance, Noah Sterba, Colin Duckworth, and Daniel Knapp, the album was recorded in ten days and the raw immediacy of the music is palpable across these ten tracks. Added adornment was contributed by Philadelphia's Robbie Bennett (War on Drugs) on organ and keys, and Matt Barrick (The Walkmen, Jonathan Fire Eater, Muzz) makes a percussion cameo on 'Whisper,' which was tracked at Philly's Silent Partner Studio, where No Medium was mixed by Quentin Stoltzfus (Mazarin, Light Heat). The open creative collaboration elevated the songs, resulting in the exciting, vibrant sound of the album."

ONEPOINTWO Synchronization LP
Subexotic Records presents the first project with talented producer Onepointwo. Konstantinos Giazlas (aka Onepointwo) hails from Thessaloniki, Greece, and sites influences from the late '50s electronic experimental sounds, motorik, krautrock, lush shoegaze melodies, and modern electronica. Talking about his creative outlook, Kostas says: "I continually look to emulate a musical journey into space, time, memories and frequencies." This journey is conducted with the use of minimal electronics, abstract and distorted shortwave radio signals, dystopian soundscapes, all carefully wrung out from criss-crossing digital and analogue sources, fused with a passion for heavy effects and percussive sounds. Fashioned from a collection of tracks hitherto believed to be lost to a cruel computer malfunction, Synchronization was salvaged from a final reboot. No editing, no tweaking, no second chance -- these tracks have reached terminal velocity. Luckily, what remains reveals a series of intricate yet powerful soundscapes, with finely wrought motifs that repeat and build to create Onepointwo's trademark shimmering psychedelic impact. 2020 brought about two album releases on highly regarded cult UK labels Miracle Pond and Woodford Halse, garnering a slew of positive reviews, including warm praise in Electronic Sound Magazine. Translucent blue, heavyweight vinyl; four-panel printed outer and inner sleeves.

D.O.A. 1978 2LP
2021 repress. "Sudden Death is excited to announce the release of the D.O.A. album 1978. It's a 21-track collection of never released demos, rare tracks and early singles from Canada's punk pioneers. Joey Shithead went deep into the vault and came up with some super exciting and raw punk rock. The album title and art concept is a spike-haired nod of the head to that early, dynamic era of the band and to the seven great former members who have since passed on. Their spirit and talent played a huge role into launching the band into worldwide prominence. The two constants on the album are Joey and Chuck Biscuits, who play on every track. From the start of 1978 begins their wild, 'I don't give a shit' approach to punk rock. Now some forty years later one can hear it all, starting with the never-seen-the-light-of-day demo version of 'The Enemy'. This demo has a different set of lyrics that speaks to fighting Nazis -- strange, what is old is new and vital again. There's a ton of exciting tracks that range from the never heard before, such as 'Bored And Suicidal', 'The Mutant', 'No God No War', 'Rip Dis Joint', 'No Way Out' and 'Rent-A-Riot', to classic early singles like 'Fucked Up Ronnie', 'Disco Sucks', 'World War 3', 'The Prisoner' and '13'. Also included are demo versions of 'America The Beautiful' and 'Liar For Hire' with Biscuits drumming, which are wildly different than the classic versions you hear on War On 45. On this collection are the origins of hardcore and a full blast of D.O.A's politics and raucous humor."

FALL, THE Totale's Turns LP
2021 repress. "Given The Fall's penchant for iconoclasm, it's no surprise that they decided to say goodbye to the '70s with a series of gigs at Northern England's gruffest halls. The band's formidable live show was met with even more derision and disorder than customary during these late '79 and early '80 performances, and they skillfully amplified such sentiments back at the crowd. Totale's Turns, The Fall's first live album, was released on Rough Trade just prior to their pivotal third album, 1980's Grotesque. 'The difference between you and us is that we have brains,' shouts Mark E. Smith to open Totale's Turns as the band breaks into the rollicking 'Fiery Jack,' their latest single at the time. Each player is at their jagged best: Marc Riley and Craig Scanlon's splintering guitars, Steve Hanley's thunderous bass and Smith's combative sneer reverberate over 'Rowche Rumble,' 'Choc-Stock,' and 'Spectre Vs. Rector' more than any studio would ever allow. Totale's Turns never panders to live-record conventions, serving instead as a gripping exhibit of The Fall en masse and arguably the most accurate document of the group to date. Superior Viaduct's edition is the first time that Totale's Turns has been available on vinyl domestically. Liner notes by Brian Turner."

MEKONS, THE The Quality Of Mercy Is Not Strnen LP
2021 repress. "After two singles for Fast Product, Leeds art-punk collective The Mekons signed with Virgin Records in 1979. The band would have to borrow gear from their mates Gang Of Four to record their major label debut. In classic Mekons style, the album's back cover featured a photo of Gang Of Four instead of themselves. As Simon Reynolds writes, 'The Quality Of Mercy Is Not Strnen got a mixed reception at the time. Listening to it now, though, the first LP sounds more of a piece with the band's early punk singles. What's striking is the commonality of sound across the three key Leeds groups of that moment (Gang Of Four, Delta 5 and The Mekons). There are textural affinities in terms of scrawny abrasiveness and a general departure from rock 'n' roll norms of singing and emoting.' With boundless energy, The Mekons net a dozen barbed takes on pop culture, art and politics. 'What Are We Going To Do Tonight' stands out as a razor-sharp critique of leisure, while 'Beetroot' drowns apathy in angular riffs and catchy, unmelodic chants. Clad in one of the most striking record covers of its era, The Quality Of Mercy Is Not Strnen is now available in the US for the first time. Liner notes by Simon Reynolds."

STOLTZ, KELLEY Double Exposure LP
2013 release. "While many rocking bands in San Francisco and beyond claim to be 'garage' bands' - Kelley Stoltz has actually recorded his new LP Double Exposure in the garage behind his house. And while the car oil stained floors are covered by oriental rugs and there are no snow shovels laying around - there is a collection of vintage synths, 17 guitars, tape echos, mellotrons, a '50s jukebox, a Teardrop Explodes poster, a tape machine used by The Residents, an amp used by Stooge James Williamson, and a myriad other noise making devices which rear their heads on his new record. All told the place is called Electric Duck Studio and it's become a muse capturing zone for Stoltz, as well as Sonny & the Sunsets, The Mantles, Tim Cohen, Life Stinks, The Sandwitches and many other tuneweavers big and small. Double Exposure is Kelley's first album in a while -- near on 3 years since his last one, To Dreamers came out on Sub Pop. What the heck has he been doing since, you ask? Well renovating the garage for one, and using said garage studio to engineer, produce or encourage the above named bands... You see time flies when you're having fun. Add in some love, a little heartbreak, turning 40, deciding to jog everyday, staring at the wall, singing hundreds of songs into the phone, sleeping, recording an album of cover songs with his family, making a couple 45 singles, catching white wine buzzes, getting dropped by Sub Pop, playing keyboards on tour with Rodriguez, and signing on with old supporters at Third Man Records... really it's as good old Sandy Denny sang, who knows where the time goes. Anyway, if you stir up all that stuff and a few other things we won't mention here, you have the makings of a fantastic and heartfelt record, Double Exposure has 10 new jams that Thee Oh Sees main man, John Dwyer, describes thusly, 'A piece of gold in your ear, A lovely thought in your mind, A breeze in the sun, This record is perfect...' Nicely put there Johnny! And you too will thrill to the sound of delay pedals twisting the keys on 'Inside My Head', crane your neck to the backwards guitars of 'Are You My Love', ramble and gamble to the clanging cymbals on the title track, question the sanity of a song called 'Kim Chee Taco Man', and finally, fall down and weep at the sweet fluted sentiments of 'It's Summertime Again'. For all of you Aussie rules fans, the album was mixed and mastered by Mikey Young of Eddy Current Suppression Ring/Total Control and features Stoltz playing most of the instruments himself and overdubbing parts through his trusty 8 track tape machine."

KROHA, DANNY Angels Watching Over Me LP
2015 release. "As a mainstay on the Detroit music scene for over thirty years, Danny Kroha has consistently pushed himself to reinvention. As founding member of garage legends the Gories, he's influenced countless imitators and poseurs. His axe work with Rocket 455 is the most quintessentially 'Detroit' rock and roll this side of the MC5. And his turn as a pastied playgirl in the Demolition Doll Rods proved that even in drag, he was undeniably solid. So with his first full-length release under his own name, it may come as an unexpected turn that he's dealing in classic gospel and folk songs. Playing every instrument himself, spanning guitar, banjo, baritone dulcimer, diddley bow, washtub bass, jug and mouth organ, the end result is a collection of compelling, timeless traditional songs. Angels Watching Over Me is the real deal, seeming that it could've been recorded at any time over the past 70 years. With this album, Kroha firmly establishes himself as one of the pre-eminent practitioners of a genre in desperate need of someone with his creativity and vision in moving forward the classic American art form. 2017 release, originally released in 1998. "The Hentchmen played their first show on Halloween of 1992 and have still shown no signs of slowing down. They are noted as some of the earliest purveyors of Detroit-style garage rock. Over their lengthy lifespan, The Hentchmen have released 27 singles (about one each year!) and 8 full-length albums on groundbreaking garage rock labels Norton Records, Estrus Records, Get Hip Records and even a promotional release through Chevrolet. You cannot get more 'Detroit' than that. To say Hentch-Forth is their best would be a lie, because whichever record you have spinning is the best! But this album serves as an excellent starting point into their vast, powerful discography. Hentch-Forth (1998) is the The Hentchmen's only album that includes Jack White on bass. This extended edition includes the 'Some Other Guy' single that also features Jack on guitar plus a couple phenomenal bonus tracks. There's a joke and a fun fact regarding this record that would have been all but lost over the decades. Italy Records and the artists included 'with Jack White' on both the 7'' and the 12'' because they thought that it would look like one of those old British Invasion records that would have an old bluesman or rocker as a guest. ROSS & THE SUPREMES, DIANA Supreme Rarities: Motown Lost & Found (1960-1969) 4LP BOX
2018 release. "As the hometown girls who conquered the world, Diana Ross and the Supremes are inarguably the most successful, highest selling girl group of all time. From their inauspicious start as the long-forgotten Primettes, to their ascension past the moniker of 'no-hit Supremes' through the ranks of Motown's rank-and-file to globe-trotting superstars, this group is as pure and quintessential Detroit Motor City as you can get. Originally released on 2xCD in in 2008, the Supremes Supreme Rarities from the Motown Lost & Found Series collects from the depths of the label archives to showcase the rarities, the outtakes and the incomparable live recordings from this inimitable group of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees. Listen to the story unfold from the innocent teenaged doo-wop of 'You Can Depend On Me' from 1960 all the way through the slick, socially-conscious refinement of 'I'm Livin' in Shame' from 1969. Aside a handful of forgotten vinyl releases decades ago, the majority of this material has not been released on vinyl. Until now. Third Man, in a unique partnership with Universal Music, has taken this double-CD and turned it into a glorious 4xLP collection housed in an impeccably-designed slipcase, all watercolor pastel vibrant photos highlight how absolutely impeccable this group is. Of particular interest is that Supreme Rarities are the first Motown records EVER pressed in the city of Detroit. Diana Ross attended high school at Cass Tech, a mere mile away from Third Man Pressing where these this title was lovingly pressed, which is also just a mile away from the Brewster-Douglass Housing Projects where Ross and fellow Supremes Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard all grew up. The 48 tracks included here include the earliest Primettes tracks, invigorating covers of The Rolling Stones 'Satisfaction' and the Beatles 'I Saw Her Standing There', along with renditions of hits for OTHER Motown artists like 'Mickey's Monkey' and 'Uptight (Everything's Alright)' in addition to alternate vocal takes of stone cold certified smashes like 'You Can't Hurry Love' and 'Someday We'll Be Together.' With their roots firmly planted in Detroit's Cass Corridor punk rock and hardcore scene of the early 80s, John Brannon (Negative Approach) and Larissa Strickland (L-Seven), along with the locked in rhythm section of Kevin Strickland and Jim Kimball, the Laughing Hyenas took it to a completely different plane. Taking pointers from The Birthday Party and Funhouse era Stooges as well as early blues and jazz artists, the Laughing Hyenas were a fierce, sulfuric blast of noise. Kevin's sinister and hypnotic bass riffs and Jim's tribal swing laid the perfect framework for Larissa's (she only picked up a guitar a couple months before the band was born) slicing, jagged, she might even be murdering that thing guitar playing and John Brannon's devilish howl. STATIC Toothpaste and Pills: Demos and Live 1978-1980 LP
"Long before John Brannon of Negative Approach cemented himself as a USHC icon, you would hear rumblings about his pre-NA glam group, Static. Only a handful of people were lucky/brave enough to see them live. Scenesters spoke of a tape but never seemed to have one. Their most well-remembered song, Toothpaste and Pills, allegedly featured smashing beer bottles against John's mom's basement wall as a percussion instrument. Could this be real? Fast forward to 2020 and a few months into the covid-19 lockdown, Brannon came across a bunch of tapes he dug out of a box in his Mom's closet -- Static 'Demos '78', Static 'Live At Grosse Pointe South H.S.', Static 'Live At Plewa Hall'. Holy shit! The legend is true! And best of all, Static rule! John Brannon grew up in Grosse Pointe Park just a few blocks from the Detroit border. John was always into music, but as soon as he heard T-Rex, The Stooges and Alice Cooper, he was obsessed (and still is) and had to start a band to channel his obsessions. With the help of neighborhood kid and collaborator Billy Daniels and a local drummer simply known as 'Red', Static was born. Before Negative Approach changed the face of punk and hardcore, before Laughing Hyenas scared the world silly and blew everyone else off the stage and before Easy Action started melting minds all over the world, there was Static. Static was real. STATIC was real as shit. Third Man Records is beyond ecstatic to be providing this long-missing piece of the American Underground Music puzzle. We worked closely with John Brannon and Warren Defever, one of Third Man Mastering's resident wizards, to put together this essential collection of demos and live recordings. Previously unreleased pre-Negative Approach John Brannon glam/hard rock project. Features demos and live recordings. For fans of: Electric Eels, Alice Cooper, T. Rex, Sex Pistols."

HIELE Sings LP
The Roman on the cover soldiers on in silence. This album is the product of excavations in materials recorded at home, EMS in Stockholm, Worm in Rotterdoom, and Willem Twee Studios in 's-Hertogenbosch, much of which has been collaged, re-collaged, broken apart, bleeped backwards and put back together with the kind of casual elegance that takes years of practice to perfect. Hiele is a very busy man: aside from his music (solo, commissions, and in collaboration with far too many people to mention here) he co-runs Table Dance -- a bar-restaurant-venue in Antwerp's red light district -- and Universal Exports, a shady organization that occasionally releases records. Includes a poster/insert, download code, and Ultra Eczema sticker; edition of 300.

ELEGIAC Elegiac 2LP
Are you ready for this? An astonishing album made by two of Britain's great maverick musical spirits. Ted Milton is a prolific poet, with several volumes under his belt, as well as an avant-garde puppeteer. Yet he's probably best known as vocalist/saxophonist with psycho-funk Afro punk fake no-wave pogo jazz trio Blurt. Milton's group has produced an impressive string of albums, not to mention his numerous solo recordings. Meanwhile, Edvard Graham Lewis has a history of strong solo releases, both under his own name and as He Said. And of course, as bassist, lyricist and sometime vocalist with post punk innovators Wire, he's been responsible for numerous landmark releases, from 1977's Pink Flag, to 2003's Send, to 2020's Mind Hive. There's a definite sense that Milton and Lewis were born to collaborate. Both are idiosyncratic sonic stylists: bullish outsiders with a Dadaist's ear for unexpected rhythms and ear-catching turns of phrase. Now, Elegiac sees them melding their considerable talents to produce an album of arresting intensity. What started out as a one-off joint composition, proved to be such a fruitful exercise it soon developed into a stream of new work. Album opener "Vous Et Ici" is a twisted tale of unrequited love, set atop skittering rhythms and curlicues of bass, whilst, "Vancouver Slim" is a dialogue between nervously looping electronics and a mournfully wayward sax solo. Meanwhile "So Far" comes across like Michael Nyman trapped in some strange break-beat bordello, as Milton recites information regarding the "planking" of a boat. It's a bizarre yet perfect fit. The album has been arranged and mixed by electronic composer and sound artist Sam Britton. Britton's sure touch ensures that the various elements work together to create something quite unique. For whilst Elegiac is a collection that foregrounds its off-center and experimental aspects, it's also blessed with plenty of hooks and seductive grooves. This is exemplified by "Swish", which, with its shuffling drums and reverberating guitar traces, sounds like a sublime out-take from Can's Tago Mago. Bristling with ideas and exploratory sounds Elegiac bounds into 2021 with a supreme confidence. It's unlikely you'll have heard anything quite like this before... White vinyl.

LOS AFROINS Goza La Sala LP
2021 repress. "The aptly named Goza La Salsa (Enjoy Salsa) is the second album by Los Afroins, the flagship salsa band of the obscure but beloved INS label (Industria Nacional Del Sonido Ltda., Medellín, Colombia). The combo's repertoire focused mostly on cover versions hit tunes from New York, Cuba. and Puerto Rico, both classic and contemporary, but for this record, their sophomore outing from 1975, their arrangements got tighter and there are more original compositions, which makes for a satisfying evolution in both style and content. Pianist Agustín 'El Conde' Martínez, who would later work with Joe Arroyo and Juan Piña, led the group and did some arranging, with studio session production by INS artistic director Alfredo 'Sabor' Linares. The vocals were handled by a pair of fresh-faced singers, Lucho Puerto Rico and Roy 'Tayrona' Betancourt, who would later go on to fame in the 1980s, the former with his own Lucho Puerto Rico Y Su Conjunto Sonero and Conjunto Son Del Barrio (both in collaboration with Alfredo Linares), and the latter with Willie Salcedo, Reales Brass De Colombia, and Los Caribes. Additional arrangements were by Luis Felipe Basto of Los Black Stars and Luis E Mosquera, while the rest of the band was made up of INS related studio musicians. Goza La Salsa is just as hard to find as their first record and contains ten bright and sassy salsa dura treasures that light up the dance floor with their incessant rhythms, syncopated trumpets and trombone, and buoyant melodies. There are smoking covers of hits by Panama's Bush y sus Magníficos ('Salsa Al Pindin') and Bronx timbalero Orlando Marín and His Orchestra ('Está De Bala') as well as updated renditions of old Cuban chestnuts 'La Masacre' (written by Joseíto Fernández) and 'Matusa' (composed by Francisco Repilado aka Compay Segundo and made famous by Duo Los Compadres). This time around there are six excellent originals with the hottest pair being Lucho Puerto Rico's theme song 'Puerto Rico Power' and the percussion-heavy final track, 'Alejada' sung and composed by Roy Betancourt. Just like the first album, the entire record makes for a very tasty and satisfying party platter filled with guaguancó, mozambique, pachanga, descarga, and bolero that deserves to be more accessible and better known by today's fans of Colombian salsa..." --Pablo E Yglesias, DJ Bongohead of Peace & Rhythm Presented here in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180 gram vinyl.

GRAUZONE Grauzone (40 Years Anniversary Edition) 2LP
Restocked; double LP version. Heavy 350gsm sleeve. WRWTFWW Records reissue Swiss cult band Grauzone's self-titled album in an expanded "40 Years Anniversary Edition" packed with the original 1981 album plus nine extra songs, as well as extensive liner notes by Swiss music historian Lurker Grand. The pioneering band from Bern (Switzerland) had a short-lived but highly-regarded career which birthed a cult discography that still fascinates and resonates today. Consisting of core members Martin Eicher, Stephan Eicher, and Marco Repetto, and on-and-off participants Christian GT Trüssel, Claudine Chirac, and Ingrid Berney, the elusive group broke new grounds in the early '80s, experimenting with punk and industrial music, early techno sounds, minimalism, new wave, pop, and various electronics. With an innovative and polished approach to design, visuals, performance, and all-around style and philosophy on top of their superb music, the constantly transforming unit developed a whole experience -- the Grauzone experience: wild and unpredictable, yet sophisticated and cohesive, or as Swiss music historian Lurker Grand would call it, "an Art band with a Punk attitude." Completely rejecting the music industry rules and refusing to play the game of promotion, touring, release schedules, and TV appearances even though they had a multi-platinum international hit with the song "Eisbär", the band quickly disintegrated in full convention-defying glory, leaving behind an inspiring music legacy for the world to discover and discover again, one generation after the other. This extended version of their debut (and only) album beautifully crystallizes the Grauzone miracle/accident -- where pop and youthful experimentation meet at (new/cold/no) wave and industrial crossroads, and where classic hits ("Eisbär", "FILM 2", "Raum", "Träume Mit Mir", "Der Weg Zu Zweit") flawlessly mesh with unconventional deep cuts ("In Der Nacht", "Film 1", "Maikäfer Flieg"). Very simply put: good timeless music with an edge. Stephan Eicher went on to be, arguably, the most successful Swiss musician ever, with an international career extending from pop chanson to experimental escapades and collaborations with Moondog, artists Sophie Calle and Sylvie Fleury, and author Martin Suter among many other luminaries. Marco Repetto flourished as a techno and ambient producer, releasing multiple projects including releases on Aphex Twin's Rephlex label. Sourced from the original reels and put together under the supervision of band member Stephan Eicher.

SATOH, SOMEI Mandala Trilogy + 1 2LP
2021 repress. WRWTFWW Records announce the full official reissue of Somei Satoh's magnificent Avatamsaka Sutra inspired Mandala Trilogy with one additional never-released piece. Sourced from original masters and available on double vinyl in heavy 350gsm sleeve with liner notes by passionate Japanese music connoisseur/collector/critic/DJ, Masaaki Hara. Deep deep deep into the abyss... The Mandala Trilogy blends Somei Satoh's own slowed down Buddhist chant vocalization and early electronics to create a radiant and meditative atmosphere conveying serenity and timelessness. It includes three pieces recorded separately. "Mandala" was recorded at the NHK Studio of Electronic Music in 1982 and was included on the album Mandala/Sumeru, released on Kojima Recordings' ALM. "Mantra" was an NHK commissioned work, recorded at the same studio in 1986. "Tantra" was recorded at Victoria University of Wellington's Lilburn Studios for electronic music and recording in 1990. Included as a bonus is the 20-minute "Mai", a composition commissioned by harpist Ayako Shinozaki and recorded at the Kioi Hall in Tokyo on November 11th, 2004. The piece was conducted by Tetsuji Honna and performed by the Kioi Sinfonietta Tokyo. Satoh says: "The harp is one of my favorite instruments. Also, by combining my affectionate percussion instrument, the chromatic gong and steel drum, with the harp's most beautiful tone, I attempted to bring out a mystical sound." Although it is not an electronic music piece, the stunning composition elegantly complements the deep mystical world that Satoh expresses in his Mandala Trilogy. Mandala Trilogy + 1 is reissued in conjunction with Somei Satoh's Emerald Tablet / Echoes LP (WRWTFWW 044LP).
