LIGHT-SPACE MODULATOR The Rising Wave LP
The Rising Wave marks the debut collaboration between singer-songwriter Marlene Ribeiro (of psychedelic band GNOD) and electronic producer Shackleton under the name Light Space Modulator. Ribeiro's ethereal voice -- part singing, part incantation -- feels both distant and intimate, humming just behind the horizon. Her experimental soundscapes flow like a streamlined river, intertwining seamlessly with Shackleton's deep, textural production and intricate percussion. Shackleton's percussive production ebbs and swells, conjuring a hypnotic, tripped-out atmosphere. At The Rising Wave's core lies a sense of intention, a cleansing ritual designed to shift perception and inspire transformation.

QUADE The Foel Tower LP
For their second album The Foel Tower, Quade holed up in an old stone barn in the cradle of a Welsh mountain valley. The valley was a stark and windswept backdrop with little daylight, as the band would huddle around crackling fires each evening. It was an environment that would shape the band -- a Bristol four piece made up of Barney Matthews, Leo Fini, Matt Griffiths, and Tom Connolly -- and the record they have made. It's an album that is as dreamy as it is melancholic, and as quiet and tender as it is forceful and potent -- gliding across genres like winds blowing over those wide-spanning Welsh hills -- to arrive at something the band half-jokingly, yet somewhat accurately, describe as "doomer sad boy, ambientdub, folk, experimental post-rock." In many ways, the making of this record goes way deeper than the simple writing, construction and recording of music. It is a profoundly deep and meaningful experience. It is a deep, dense record that is stuffed with musical, cinematic and literary influences -- from Ursula La Guin and Cormac MacCarthy through to RS Thomas and Yeats -- but despite the heavy, introspective and anxious nature of some of the material, it is also a record that is remarkably deft, agile and considered. Made with producer Jack Ogborne and mixer Larry 'Bruce' McCarthy, there is a pleasing duality to the final sound of the record. The album title also pays homage to the place that shaped it so greatly. Within this remote Welsh valley stands the Foel Tower, a stone structure filled with valves and cylinders that can raise and lower the level of the reservoir to draw off water. What makes The Foel Tower such an incredible record is that it feels born of a time, place and situation that only existed in that very moment. It's a snapshot of those ten days spent in rural Wales and all the feelings and anxieties the band were experiencing at that specific time, magically caught on tape.

VELSORF & AASE NIELSEN, MK Opening Night CD
Opening Night is a collection of instrumental music composed for the opening gala of the New Theater Hollywood by Danish composers MK Velsorf and Aase Nielsen. A cycle of minimal pieces for e-guitar, e-piano and backing tracks, the music was performed and recorded live from the stage balcony during the dress rehearsal, arrival of the guests and between speeches throughout the night. The music is patient, minimal and groovy -- consisting of sparse guitar vamps, drum and synth loops, it establishes a mood, or a tone: one of sun-soaked dreams, ecological dread and never-ending anticipation. Opening Night evokes the environmental furniture music of Erik Satie, as well as the melancholic instrumentals of Arthur Russell, the procedural TV score of Mike Post, and the sleazy atmospheres of certain Michael Mann films. Designed to weave in and out of the listener's consciousness, Opening Night is light in feel yet with a deep pull, breezily conjuring feelings of banality, pleasurable dissociation, and eerie repetition. The listener is invited to get in the car and stay for a while. The New Theater Hollywood is a performance space run by artists Calla Henkel and Max Pitegoff, housed in the historic 49-seat 2nd Stage Theater in Hollywood's largely defunct Theater Row, conceived as a space to develop and stage original theatrical productions in the crosswinds of performance, literature, contemporary art, film and television.

GARCIA, VIOLETA IN/OUT LP
Violeta Garc?a is a cellist, composer and curator from Buenos Aires, Argentina, based in Bern, Switzerland. Working across a broad spectrum of artforms including improvisation, contemporary classical and electronic music, she now presents her new album IN/OUT via Bongo Joe. After dedicating years to the study of classical and popular music on the violoncello, and later delving into contemporary composition and improvisation, Garcia came to the realization that her unique musical voice yearned to transcend specific genres, and she has embarked on extensive tours throughout Europe and around the globe, showcasing her work as a soloist, collaborator and with her experimental rock project, Blanco Teta. In 2015, she co-founded Latin America digital label TVL-REC, dedicated to the production of experimental and improvised music. For IN/OUT, Garcia worked with expanded cello techniques, recorded in a cave in Geneva, Switzerland, which once housed the city's water reservoir. Employing the resonance of the natural acoustics of the site as a sound body, Garcia fuses improvisation, composition and new sounds, actively engaging in experimentation with extended techniques and prepared instrument, whilst exploring dynamic, rhythmic, and original melodic combinations.

DIE WILDE JAGD & METROPOLE ORKEST Lux Tenera: A Rite To Joy LP
LP version. Die Wilde Jagd collaborates with Grammy Award-winning Metropole Orkest, conducted by Simon Dobson, for majestic new album Lux Tenera: A Rite To Joy, commissioned by Roadburn Festival. In an extraordinary convergence of sonic innovation and orchestral mastery, Sebastian Lee Philipp, the visionary behind Die Wilde Jagd, presents his most ambitious project to date. This work emerges from a rare collaboration with the three-time Grammy Award-winning Metropole Orkest. Lux Tenera invites listeners into a meditative exploration of life, joy, and the beauty of existence. The composition premiered on April 21, 2024, in Tilburg, Netherlands, following an intense three-day rehearsal and recording period at Metropole Orkest's studio in Hilversum. This performance -- now captured in the album -- also marks a unique collaboration with British arranger and conductor Simon Dobson, whose sensitive transcription and arrangement of Philipp's music for orchestra elevates the work to an auditory spectacle. Lux Tenera -- translated from Latin as "tender light" -- is an odyssey of sound and thought. Philipp's poetic lyrics -- delivered in both English and German -- weave a tapestry of vivid imagery and allusion, guiding the listener through a world where life, memory, and transcendence coalesce. This intellectual and emotional alchemy is heightened by the orchestral elements at play: a 50-piece ensemble, the primal resonance of two large-scale Taiko drums, and the ancient, raw timbre of the Carnyx, performed by Patrick Kenny. The result is a sonic structure that marries the primal with the avant-garde, the physical with the metaphysical. At its heart, Lux Tenera presents a bold reimagining of Die Wilde Jagd's distinctive sound. Known for hypnotic, slow-building compositions that evoke a sense of ritual and timelessness, Philipp, in this latest work, is granted new sonic breadth by the orchestral textures of the Metropole Orkest. The symphonic scope enhances and magnifies his compositions, creating what can only be described as a sonic architecture that is both monumental and intimate, where each crescendo, each subtle melodic turn, guided by Simon Dobson's conducting skills, speaks to Philipp's understanding of music as an emotional language.

VA Krautrock Eruption: An Introduction To German Electronic Music 1970-1980 LP
LP version. Agree to disagree: A selected Krautrock discography. Krautrock, what is it anyway? A genre, a derogative term, a song by Faust, or: a welcome (and recurring) opportunity to talk about all of this. The music associated with the term in question has eagerly been canonized. From the enthusiastic and idiosyncratic ramblings of Julian Cope's "Krautrocksampler" to encyclopedic approaches like Alan and Stephen Freeman's "Crack in the Cosmic Egg", there are plenty of books to read and lists to discuss: Who's in, who isn't? The quarrels and disputes surrounding the terms "Krautrock" and "Kosmische Musik" are a testament to their enduring relevance and fascination. The book Krautrock Eruption by Wolfgang Seidel addresses some of those questions. In this book, you will find an annotated discography of fifty albums. Out of these fifty, Bureau B are presenting an even narrower selection of tracks from twelve albums on this compilation. Lists and compilation track listings inevitably see tracks missing and being left out. The list is meant to inspire repeated or further listening, to spark discussions and -- potentially -- to provoke new lists, perhaps your own! It's all part of the fun. Music is made for enjoyment in the first and for friendly debate in the second place, after all. Featuring Conrad Schnitzler, Eno Moebius Roedelius, Harald Grosskopf, Cluster, Moebius & Plank, Roedelius, Pyrolator, Riechmann, Kluster, G?nter Schickert, and Asmus Tietchens.

PERRY, OMAR Channelling Lee Scratch Perry CD
CD version. "Burning Sounds presents a brand-new album from Omar Perry. This is a must-have for reggae fans and music lovers alike! The album, Channelling Lee 'Scratch' Perry, is a tribute from Scratch's son, Omar Perry, to his father. 'Scratch' was, beyond question, a genuine genius responsible for creating some of the greatest, most complex, and thought-provoking music to ever come out of Jamaica -- or anywhere else. His importance to the furtherance of Jamaican music as a producer, arranger, writer, and artist is beyond compare and he played an integral role in, and was the inspiration for, many of the key movements in the development of reggae throughout the '60s and '70s. Omar Perry is an accomplished performer in his own right with an impressive track record and Channelling Lee Scratch Perry leaves the listener in no doubt as to where Omar and Olivier Gangloff, the producer of Scratch's final studio album Heaven are coming from. And every bit as importantly, they demonstrate where they are going -- it's not nostalgia but an intelligent use of the past to create music for the future."

HOWARD GROUP, NOAH Berlin Concert LP
2025 restock. Trost Records presents the latest release in its ongoing cooperation with Berlin's legendary FMP label, with the long overdue reissue of two classic live albums by the singular alto saxophonist Noah Howard, a key figure in New York's free jazz revolution during the 1960s. Berlin Concert was recorded live in the titular city in January of 1975 with a quartet featuring pianist Takashi Kako, bassist Kent Carter, drummer Oliver Johnson, and percussionist Lamont Hampton. It was released on the SAJ sub label in 1977. It deftly captures the full diapason of Howard's fiery art. Fueled by the propulsive swing of the great Oliver Johnson, bassist Kent Carter -- both Americans who spent many years living and working in Europe, including long stints with Steve Lacy -- and percussionist Lamont Hampton, Berlin Concert nonchalantly toggles between modal workouts, where Japanese pianist Takashi Kako invokes the ironclad drive of McCoy Tyner, and the needling fury of "New York Subway," summoning the all-out fury of the '60s New Thing. This album reinforces the scalding passion of Howard's playing, while simultaneously highlighting a stylistic depth and lyrical grace that's often overlooked in his music. Howard, who suffered a fatal cerebral hemorrhage in 2010, at age 67, has been duly celebrated for his work in the 1960s, but the return of this gem makes it plain he had plenty more to say. Recorded live by Jost Gebers on January 30th and 31st,1975 at the Quartier Latin in Berlin. Cover design by Wolf Walt. Photograph by Roberto Masotti. Produced by Jost Gebers. Originally released and published on FMP in 1977.

WEB WEB Plexus Plexus CD
Web Web present their sixth album with a new touch. More psychedelic, sometimes more krauty than before. This time, Web Web, with their original line-up (without Max Herre) have (again) chosen a special guest: JJ Whitefield (The Poets Of Rhythm/Karl Hector & The Malcouns/Syrup), who contributes the fantastic guitar sound. His riffs are sometimes funky as with the Poets Of Rhythm or Syrup, or more psychedelic as with Karl Hector & The Malcouns or his many live and studio recordings with Embryo. The sound color of his guitar gives the album a thrust into the wonderful atmosphere of spacey jazz-kraut bands of the seventies. The concept of the album is the exact opposite of the previous Web Max album, with spontaneous, improvised pieces, fragments, ideas that mean the greatest possible liberty and live spirit. The idea of bringing JJ Whitefield on board was just as unpredictable and improvised. Roberto Di Gioia spontaneously called JJ and asked him if he could imagine playing on one or two songs. JJ immediately said yes, and a day later he was in the studio. They actually only played two songs: One lasted 25 minutes, the other 45 minutes. The tracks for Plexus Plexus were created over two days, recorded by Jan Krause (Beanfield) in Munich. The energetic live session lasted twice 10 hours, and everyone -- Roberto Di Gioia (Rhodes, Fender Precision Bass, Moog, Mellotron, percussion), Christian von Kaphengst (Fender Precision Bass, Rhodes), Peter Gall (drums, percussion, Fender Rhodes), Tony Lakatos (tenor saxophone, flute) -- was "on fire" to the core. The musicians switched instruments to create a completely different overall sound: Kaphengst on Fender Rhodes sounds different to Roberto, his playing has a different harmonic structure, and Roberto on bass is familiar from numerous Max Herre recordings, or from Till Br?nner's album Till Br?nner.

BLONK, JAAP Ursonate CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey presents Jaap Blonk's Ursonate, featuring the complete text-sound work by artist Kurt Schwitters. Blonk first recorded the canonical Dada poetry piece in 1986, released as an LP on BVHAAST, Willem Breuker's label. He has returned to the work multiple times over the ensuing decades, and this incredible new recording shows his deepening understanding of the pioneering work. Blonk writes in the liner notes: "Kurt Schwitters (1887-1948) wrote his Ursonate or Sonate in Urlauten ('Primordial Sonata' or 'Sonata in Primordial Sounds') over ten years, from 1922 to 1932. During that period Schwitters tried out many preliminary parts in public poetry readings. It became a 30-page work in invented words, which he later considered one of his two masterpieces (the other being the Merzbau in his house in Hannover, destroyed in 1944). The Ursonate has a structure similar to that of a classical sonata or symphony. It consists of four movements: 'Erster Teil' ('first part'), 'Largo,' 'Scherzo,' and 'Presto.' After a short introduction, the first movement opens with an exposition of its four main themes (subjects), each of which is subsequently 'developed' (development in the sense it is used in classical sonata form), leading to a coda. It is note- worthy that the theme exposition returns as a reprise before each new development but the last one. Both the Largo and the Scherzo have a centered (A-B-A) construction in which the middle part contrasts with the two identical outer parts. The Presto has a strict rhythm broken only by a few interjections from the first movement and the Scherzo. Like the first movement, it follows the sonata form: exposition (repeated immediately in this case), development, and recapitulation. Next is the Kadenz, leaving the reciter free to choose between the written version and his own. However, in his written instructions for future performers of the piece, Schwitters says that he wrote his cadenza only for those among them who 'had no imagination.' In my performances of the Ursonate, I always create an improvised cadenza on the basis of the sonata's thematic material. Only on the recordings I have issued, for reasons of completeness, a recording of the written cadenza is included as a separate track." --Jaap Blonk, December 2024

NORDVARGR Resignation IV LP
"Swedish dark ambient and experimental artist Nordvargr (Henrik Nordvargr Bj?rkk) presents the highly anticipated Resignation 4, continuing his sonic journey through rhythmic, atmospheric, and melancholic soundscapes. Building on the foundation laid by the Resignation trilogy, Resignation 4 expands the project's signature blend of techno-inspired beats, dark ambient textures, and hypnotic soundscapes. The album maintains one foot firmly in the techno scene, while also embracing moments of eerie calm and reflective melancholy. It is an album where rhythmic pulses and deep atmospherics converge, presenting a sound that is at once mesmerizing and abrasive, pushing the boundaries of electronic music. This latest chapter sees Nordvargr taking his unique grasp of genre fusion even further, blending ambient melancholia with hard-edged, rhythmic elements. Fans of both experimental electronics and the fringes of techno will find Resignation 4 to be a captivating continuation of his visionary work. The Resignation project began in 2008 as an exploration of rhythmic, repetitive music paired with dark ambient soundscapes. It was born from a collaboration between Nordvargr and Nils Ekholm, merging techno-inspired beats with samples from old 78 RPM records. Over the years, the project has grown, with each album taking a distinct direction -- ranging from dubby techno atmospheres to harsher, noisier electronic soundscapes --culminating in the haunting, cinematic experience that is Resignation 4. Along the way, the project has evolved from its early experimental roots into a genre-defying force, standing at the crossroads of ambient, techno, and industrial music. With Resignation 4, Nordvargr continues to refine his signature style, exploring new territories of sound and emotion. This album promises to be a highlight of his prolific career, offering a bold and dynamic listening experience for fans of experimental and rhythmic electronic music. The stunning album artwork and photography are created by Sandrine Pelletier, capturing the stark, otherworldly aesthetic of the Resignation series."

HAIR & TREASURE Disc Rot LP
Long and intermittent running duo of Discrepant head honcho Gon?alo F Cardoso and Angela Valid's Alex Jones, with sometime collaborator Phil Laney aka Kenny Hosepipe joining in somewhere along the way, Hair & Treasure crossover from Sucata Tapes to Discrepant wax via Disc Rot. Described by the duo, in their cryptic and scatological fashion, as "a fetid spread from the buttery catacombs of Hair & Treasure," one can only speculate on the mindset, if not for the scenario, for these file swap recording sessions. As if decaying throughout this back and forth process, the synthscapes, field recordings, voices from who knows where, and subliminal pulses assembled in these 11 pieces all coalesce into this out-there murk where invocations of "a" real are mangled into unhinged, squinting eyes moments of near-consciousness. Compared to previous Hair & Treasure ventures like Two Fucking Tapes or Forked Piss Blues, Disc Rot forgoes side-long tapestries by focusing on shorter and clearer transmissions from the netherworld. Still, the feeling of pieces of discarded hardware and sound hubris lying around and turned music of the duo remains unscathed, filtered through a newfound precision. After the opening feverish threat of "Warm Night," the suspended synth pads and working machinery of "Byzantine Turd Skirt" actually comes as a relief, pulling away (a bit) of the dread to resurface with the Texas Chainsaw Massacre OST ambience of "Amateur Depravity" and 2004-ish Midwest noise stylings of "Busy Hubby's Flight to Gstaad" and "Tit Ale." "Roads Gonad Today" and "Just Jerkers" are not that far removed from a lower fidelity take on Black Dice circa "Creature Comforts," while "Professional Babies" goes back a couple of years to their collabs with Wolf Eyes, but mostly, all of this sounds like nothing but Hair & Treasure themselves.

But it is a musing on popular standards and uses much of the same instrumentation that many of our country's most popular records have. Yes, Bad Timing is a theme record, Jim O'Rourke's pop opera, just waiting for someone to come along and play with it. Based on Fahey-esque 6-string acoustic guitar foundations, each of the three pieces expand to include other musical elements. Causa Sui returns with a new live album, recorded at their home turf -- the legendary Copenhagen venue Loppen, located at the famous, and notorious, freetown Christiania -- a venue the band has played more often than any other throughout their 20 year career. This set is the perfect companion to From The Source (EPR 076CD), which saw the band condense the multiple stylistic aspects of their sound into an awe-inspiring 47 minutes. Represented here are key cuts from that album -- including the sidelong 7-part epic "Visions of a New Horizon" -- as well as a few fan favorites such as "Red Sun in June" from the band's Summer Sessions series, which has never previously been released in a live version. In this rendition the band let themselves get carried away, riding on the energy of the room, soaring into jammy Grateful Dead territory. Elsewhere the band explores jazzy, improvisatory group interplay ("The Spot") and get as heavy as they can ("Soledad," "Boozehound"). Getting carried away is what Causa Sui are all about when playing live, and that mentality is captured in entirety on this set. Mixed and mastered by Jonas Munk from a multitrack soundboard recording.

MACHADO & BOA NOVA, EDISON Edison Machado & Boa Nova CD
Far Out Recordings presents a landmark discovery in Brazilian jazz: the long lost album by drumming pioneer Edison Machado. Recorded in New York City in early 1978 but never released, Edison Machado & Boa Nova captures a pivotal figure in Brazilian music history at the height of his artistic powers. After facing persecution under Brazil's military dictatorship and being forced to sell his drum kit in 1976, Machado found renewed creative purpose in New York with the Boa Nova ensemble. The resulting album captures the essence of his genius -- sophisticated yet wild, controlled yet daring, leading an ensemble of some of the best jazz, samba and bossa nova players of the day. At just fifteen years old, Machado revolutionized Brazilian music through an accident that would change everything -- when his snare drum broke during a performance, he began playing samba rhythms on the cymbal. This innovation, known as "samba no prato" (samba on the cymbals), brought new layers of dynamism to samba and proved instrumental in the development of bossa nova alongside contemporaries like Antonio Carlos Jobim and Jo?o Gilberto. A complex and passionate figure, Machado was notorious for his militant perfectionism and "attacking" style of drumming. Having spent some years of his youth in the Brazilian army, musicians often remarked that he played as if he were at war. But his innovative style, while exhibiting complete control and sophistication, somehow so often danced right on the edge of chaos and wild abandon. After making his name in Rio's legendary Beco das Garrafas (Bottles Alley) in the 1950s and early '60s, Machado went on to form Bossa Tr?s -- the world's first instrumental bossa nova group. His influence spread internationally through collaborations with Stan Getz, Sergio Mendes, Ant?nio Carlos Jobim, Milton Nascimento, and Chet Baker, while his 1964 album Edison Machado ? Samba Novo stands as a masterpiece of Brazilian jazz. At 80 minutes in length, Edison Machado & Boa Nova, the lost 1978 New York sessions, is a singular achievement in Brazilian jazz. The format itself is a rarity in the canon. It's packed full of exceptional technical precision and creative vitality, with sophisticated arrangements and masterful improvisation from its exceptional sextet of Brazilian and US musicians: Paulinho Trompete (flugelhorn/trumpet), Ion Muniz (tenor saxophone), Steve Sacks (baritone saxophone), Mozar Terra (piano), and Ricardo dos Santos (double bass). The album features unheard compositions by Brazilian masters Dom Salvador, Guilherme Vergueiro, and Aloisio Aguiar, amidst the plethora of captivating original material by the members of the Boa Nova ensemble.

WEIRD HERALD Just Yesterday CD
In 1968, Weird Herald released a now sought-after promo only 45 with the songs "Saratoga James"/'Just Yesterday." That 45 was part of a full album that was never released. Music ranges from haunting, beautiful folk-rock with spacey acoustic guitar playing and delicate vocal harmonies, cool laid-back country-folk, to energetic hard-rockers ? la early Moby Grape or Jefferson Airplane with stunning electric leads. Not forgetting "Where I'm Bound" which has a cool Notorious Byrd Brothers feel. Hailing from Los Gatos in California, Weird Herald featured two accomplished guitar players who are local legends in the San Jose / Santa Cruz area, Billy Dean Andrus and Paul Ziegler. Their roots can be traced to the early San Jose folk / coffeehouse scene. Jorma Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna) was a close friend and used to jam with them. Billy Dean Andrus was Skip Spence's best friend since high school and they both used to perform as a folk duo in the early days. A fantastic rhythm section, Cecil Bollinger on bass and Pat McIntire on drums rounded the band. Sadly, in 1970 Billy Dean Andrus died of a drug overdose in the Santa Cruz Mountains. He was immortalized on the songs "Ode for Billy Dean" written by Jorma Kaukonen for Hot Tuna and "Chicago" by the Doobie Brothers. Paul Ziegler ended up joining up Hot Tuna in the early '70s. He passed away in 2000. Problems with the management/producers led to the planned album being shelved and, according to legend, the master tapes destroyed. Luckily, reel-to-reel copies have remained with the Andrus family for half over a century, unheard until now. Includes eight-page insert with detailed liner notes by Cam Cobb (authors of Weighted Down: The Complicated Life Of Skip Spence) with input from the Andrus family and the surviving Weird Herald members and rare photos. Comes with download card with 11 previously unreleased bonus tracks, including basement demos from 1967 by the first line-up of the band. RIYL: Moby Grape, Jefferson Airplane, The Byrds, Milk Carton Kids, Buffalo Springfield, Maitreya Kali, Everly Brothers, Psychedelic Rock, Folk-Rock, Loner Folk.

RAIN Tomorrow Never Comes LP
Top-shelf previously unreleased psychedelic pop from 1967-68 by this post-Lomax Alliance Anglo-American trio. A mix of West Coast/Swingin' London sounds with killer vocal harmonies, fuzz guitar, tape/studio effects. Think psych-era Beatles, Byrds, Nazz, Buffalo Springfield, Colours, and The Moon. The convulsed story of Rain involves Brian Epstein, The Beatles, Merseybeat, Liverpool, New York, Linda Eastman (who photographed the band) and more. Basically, when the Brian Epstein-managed band Lomax Alliance parted ways with their frontman Jackie Lomax (who was about to embark on a George Harrison-assisted solo career), his colleagues in Lomax Alliance -- guitarist John Cannon, bassist Tom Caccetta and drummer Bugs Pemberton -- left London behind to relocate to New York, where they changed their name to Rain (after his favorite Beatles track) and recorded a full album with producer Chris Huston (The Undertakers, Young Rascals). Despite the outstanding production, top notch songwriting and superb musicianship, the album never left the acetate stage. The trio played at the Fillmore and did more studio work under the Gypsy Wizards Band name that remained also unreleased, before disbanding in 1969. Tomorrow Never Comes includes all the tracks from the Rain acetate, recorded 1967-68, plus two songs from the Gypsy Wizards Band one (1968-69). Vintage styled artwork in hard cardboard sleeve. Remastered sound. Includes Insert with liner notes by David Wells and rare photos/memorabilia.

CLARK & MITCH RENAUD, KATELYN Ouroboros LP
On Katelyn Clark and Mitch Renaud's Ouroboros astronomical and astrological phenomena, concepts and symbols such as the Great Year or the Eternal Return serve as the starting points for sonic explorations and experimentations. Focusing on a uniquely tempered range of frequencies, from low-end drone rumbles to airy pipe swirls, the duo develops a minimalist and highly evocative sonic universe on their debut album for Hallow Ground. Working as composers, improvisers and curators in Canada's vibrant experimental and early music scenes, Clark and Renaud began developing Ouroboros through extensive improvisation with a reduced setup. Clark, who has worked extensively with historical keyboards since her studies in Amsterdam and Siena, played a small pipe organ modelled after a 14th-century instrument while Renaud brought a modular synthesizer and his interest in feedback systems to the collaboration. Later, the duo further refined their artistic dialog and the sonic interactions of the two instruments through the shared space of a two-day recording session in Vancouver. Subtle crackling, acoustic beating and other (psycho-)acoustic effects in five pieces document this encounter, giving the music a profound physicality while hinting at the bodily presence of the two collaborators. Just as the cyclicality of natural phenomena or the repetition of planetary movements is both a scientific fact and of the cultural imaginary, the sound worlds of Ouroboros are fundamentally rooted in time and space while transgressing the idea of a "here and now" through their conceptual links to geological and planetary time. The interplay of portative organ and modular synthesizer, which merge fluidly and in ever-changing ways, leads to a kind of circularity, a timelessness, a no-time. At the same time, the movements and subtle changes undermine the idea of repetition in the negative sense. After all, the Eternal Return, as Gilles Deleuze writes in regard to Nietzsche, is not the return of the same but a repetition of repetition. The only constant is change, the production of new intensities, of new forms of life -- and of new frequencies.

LANDSMAN/NORMAN WESTBERG, AARON Night Keeper LP
Night Keeper is a collaborative album by New York City-based artist Aaron Landsman and former Swans guitarist Norman Westberg that is based on the former's eponymous play. Westberg recorded it together with performer Jehan O. Young for the Swiss Hallow Ground label, with Landsman serving as the record's producer. The original piece was first performed in the Spring of 2023 at The Chocolate Factory Theater in Queens and filled the stark industrial space with spoken text, choreography, projections, and music in dim light and, occasionally, complete darkness. Westberg and Young afterwards brought it to the studio to record it as a two-part album in whose course his textural sounds, based on loops and samples, set the stage for her soothing, sonorous vocal performance. Night Keeper is a performance inspired by sleeplessness and the wanderings of the human mind at night -- about time and memory. Westberg and Young elegantly capture its essence in these roughly 44 minutes with a somnambulic album, letting sound and meaning flow into each other. The initial spark for Night Keeper was a run of almost sleepless nights in different neighborhoods of a city that is perpetually insomniac. Instead of trying to force himself to go back to sleep by any means necessary, Landsman started writing down his thoughts. Accordingly, the texts that Young reads on the record form a diverse collection of specific moments, imagining different speakers and evoking different situations. Westberg complements, accentuates, and juxtaposes these with different means. Ominous drones, soaring melodies, rhythmic bass sounds. Landsman makes it clear that Night Keeper was intended as an invitation to "stay up, look out the window, let what's happening outside spark reveries or predictions? or even take it on a stroll through the neighborhood" at night, of course. Much like the original piece, this album is then one dedicated to wandering around, both mentally and physically.

PURPLE TRAP (LASWELL, HAINO, ALI) The Stone LP
Purple Trap, the powerful trio of Keiji Haino (voice, guitar), Bill Laswell on bass, and Rashied Ali (drums), recorded live on stage at The Stone. Recorded in December 2005, this furious live album by what can easily be called a super group remained unreleased till in 2023 Bill Laswell made it accessible in a rough-mixed digital version for his bandcamp subscribers program exclusively. For this vinyl version, the music has been newly mixed by Dirk Dresselhaus (SchneiderTM) and mastered/cut by Ruy Marin? at Dubplates & Mastering Berlin. Purple Trap reunited for this one-off gig as part of a five-day Haino-festival at John Zorn's venue, The Stone, seven years after its only album had been recorded (released on Tzadik in 1999). The six untitled tracks deliver what can be expected from such musical masters: Rashied Ali, iconic free jazz drummer who played with John and Alice Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Sonny Rollins, James Blood Ulmer, and countless more, is all drums, from quiet tiny sounds to high-energy rhythm patterns. Keiji Haino, one of the most prolific artists of the Japanese experimental/noise scene for almost 50 years now, switches between truculent guitar splatters and full-on psychedelic outbursts. Bill Laswell, who as producer and musician created a massive body of work in fields as diverse as ambient, world music, funk, jazz (and often hybrids of these), has proven his mastery in improvisation in projects like Massacre, Painkiller or (early) Material and provides the low-end grounding with his signature bass sound, or adds effect-laden ornaments to the whole. An overdue addition to a very small body of work by a clearly under-documented supergroup!

GRANADO GOAT UNITY, GUILHERME Ghost Parades LP
Guilherme Granado makes his first solo appearance on the Keroxen label under the guise of his Goat Unity project, the result of a plethora of collaborations with musician friends and foes. A S?o Paulo native, Guilherme has been quietly building a reputation for being the go-to guy for loop-based beats and groovy basslines. He has played and recorded with Mauricio Takara in Hurtmold and he's also part of S?o Paulo Underground (also with Takara and Rob Mazurek). He also performs, produces, and records under the name Bodes & Elefantes and has toured extensively through South America, US and Europe with S?o Paulo Underground, Prefuse 73 et al. With Ghost Parades, Guilherme goes deep into his beat-based deviations whilst somehow managing to connect the dots between the Wu-Tang Clan and the Sun Ra Arkestra, adding a healthy dose of tropicalismo for good measure. Guilherme's Ghost Parades does an impeccable job at showcasing the multi-instrumentalist composition skills filled with dubby rhythms, addictive bass lines along with celestial and hazy chants. It's a smooth journey to take here, avoiding all the obvious pit holes of the genre and keeping the listener guessing where they're going at every turn. A spacious, open ended listening experience where loops effortlessly intertwine with live jam instrumentation. Organic, natural beats for atypical people.

VA Ghetto Ska CD
The shuffle rhythm that was born from the American rhythm and blues tunes that hit Jamaica in the 1950s would soon fuse under its Jamaican influence and find an emphasis on the second and fourth bars of the beat. This off-beat would create the ska sound and no fine exponent of this in the sounds early days was Theo Beckford. Theophilus "Easy Snapping" Beckford (born 1935, Kingston, Jamaica) began his musical career in the mid '50s and had after only two years mastered his instrument of choice the piano. His first hit for Coxonne Dodd's Worldisc label was the classic "Easy Snapping." He had created his own laid-back style that simply rolled off his piano and his musical arrangements became the backbone of so many early ska tunes. His services were soon in demand with not only Coxonne Dodd but all the other top flight producers of the time, Duke Reed, Beverley's, Prince Buster, and Clancy Eccles. His session work alongside his playing as part of the big group of the time Clue J and His Blues Blasters, that would eventually morph into the legendary Skatalites, meant that his fingers were truly on the musical pulse of the time. Kingston Sounds have compiled some great early ska cuts for this release that have been touched with the T. Beckford magic. Some of his own classic hits "Flip,Flop and Fly" (aka "Walking Down King Street"), "Mr Downpressor" the fantastic "Don't Have a Ticket Don't Worry." His poignant duo of "Grudgeful People" and "Ungrateful People" and two other timeless tracks "What A Woe" and "Boilerman." Alongside some of his productions for some of the other long-forgotten heroes of the early ska sound. Basil Gabiddon's "Streets of Glory," Frank Cosmo's "On Your Knees," Shenley and Annette's "Now Your Gone" and Daniel Johnson's uplifting "Come On My People." A mighty fine set of early ska tunes fighting their way out of Kingston Town and into your hearts.

PERKINS, LASCELLES Sings Studio One and More CD
Lascelles Perkins was one of the first stars of the Jamaican music scene, Studio One's leading balladeer, and one of the most underrated singers from that time. Perkins sang sentimental ballads and scored massive local hits for Coxsone Dodd's Studio One label with tracks like "Lonely Moments" and "Together Forever." Other big hits followed, including "The Mighty Organ" (a duet with Hortense Ellis, Alton Ellis's sister), "Destiny," and a whole catalog of standards. Perkins could sing any song, make it seem effortless, and, at the same time, address it in his own unique style. Perkins was present at the birth of Studio One, at the initial sessions carried out in 1959 alongside the other big singers of the day, Alton Ellis and Basil Gabbidon. The session took place at Federal Studios and, as was standard at the time, the studio had one mic hanging down in the middle of the room. The singer would be nearest to the mic, and the musicians, depending on how loud their instruments were, would place themselves accordingly in the room, recording everything together in a single take. The singers and the musicians would have to be at the top of their game and would be paid for each side they cut. Doing things over would mean fewer songs finished. Time and money was tight, but this discipline made the great records we know today. This set includes Perkins on some lost tapes from producer Bunny Lee's archive, singing some of the big Studio One hits of the day, including "Rain from the Skies," "Stick by Me," "Love Me Forever," and "No Man Is an Island," alongside other great tunes from the time like "Dancing Mood," "Pledging My Love," "Take My Hand," "Never Never," and "Dinner for One." KELLY, PAT Better Get Ready LP
LP version. Pat Kelly, out of all the Jamaican singers, was influenced most by the voice of American soul singer, Sam Cooke. As were indeed many of the singers from that time, few however could carry out this daunting task as well as Pat Kelly. His delivery was perfect and so was his ability to carry any song that came his way. Pat Kelly, born 1949 in Kingston, Jamaica, began his singing career in 1967 when he replaced Slim Smith as lead singer of The Techniques, his voice working so well with the impeccable harmonies of Winston Riley and Bruce Ruffin. Their first hit for the mighty Duke Reid stable was a version of Curtis Mayfield's tune "You'll Want Me Back" retitled "You Don't Care" which held the Number 1 slot in Jamaica for the six weeks. For this release, Kingston Sound have focused on material that Mr. Kelly had recorded with legendary Jamaican producer Bunny "Striker" Lee. A match made in heaven and one that produced some of their finest work. Tracks include "One In a Million", "One Man Stand", "Man Of My Word" and "I Started a Joke". So sit back and you better get ready for an albums worth of great songs sung and delivered as only the great Pat Kelly could.

VA Greetings From S.G.V. LP
RSD 2024 indie exclusive. Official RSD UK Release. Overdue re-issue of the first three 12" in the record series dedicated to musicians who took part to the Greetings festival. It happened in 1987, at the time of Materiali Sonori's 10th anniversary, a historic goal for the label/collective born in the small Tuscany village of San Giovanni Valdarno. The small celebration brought to life a box collecting the first three EPs of the Greetings from S.G.V. series. The series was intended as symbolic sound postcard, made with various musicians with whom the collective label shared a path, whether small or long. The Durutti Column, The Stockholm Monsters, and Blaine R. Reininger (Tuxedomoon) are among the artist who took part in the project, here collected for the very first time. Lantern is pleased to pay tribute to the work of people whose passion, attitude, commitment and genuineness inspired this adventure to these days.

WHITE, CLARENCE Melodies From A Byrd In Flyte: 1963-1973 CD
"A mix of fourteen rare acoustic and electric tracks from the late country-rock pioneer and legendary member of The Byrds and Kentucky Colonels. The set includes tracks recorded both at the beginning and at the peak of his career, showcasing his critically acclaimed flat-picking guitar style. Features guest players such as Eric Weissberg, the Byrds' Roger McGuinn, Gene Parsons, and Skip Battin, the Flying Burrito Brothers' Byron Berline, and a rare rehearsal performance with the Everly Brothers with Gram Parsons on rhythm guitar. White said of his guitar technique, 'I always maintain that I'm an electric country guitarist working in rock, rather than a rock n' roll guitarist like, say, Clapton or Beck, who came up through blues.' He may be best known as the second-longest member of The Byrds and leader of the Kentucky Colonels, but White also left his mark as a pioneer of country rock and his flat-picking guitar stylings; his ability to cross between acoustic and electric made him unique. His session work included recordings with Linda Ronstadt, Joe Cocker, Randy Newman, Rick Nelson, Pat Boone, The Monkees, Arlo Guthrie, and Jackson Browne, among others."

TIPPETT GROUP, KEITH You Are Here... I Am There LP
Reissue. The debut album by forward thinking English piano player Keith Tippett was a turning point in British jazz evolution. The overall atmosphere and aura of You Are Here... I Am There points at the influences of jazz musicians such as John Coltrane, Archie Shepp, and Charles Mingus. This strong tendency points to other contemporary European players like Jan Garbarek and Miles biographer Ian Carr. Tippett's compositional style also reveals traces of his classical training, unveiled by a harmonic and dynamic awareness. Bridging the line between UK more adventurous prog-rock and Afro-American fire music, this 1970 album stands as a masterpiece on its own.

HUMAIR & JEAN CHARLES CAPON, DANIEL Apocalypse: Biorhythm - Fiction Series (Descriptive Futurist) LP
Super-rare library recorded in 1980 by the powerful duo of percussionist Daniel Humair, one of the most avant-garde in the Swiss jazz evolution experiment, and the familiar and talented cellist Jean-Charles Capon (ex-Baroque Jazz Trio), who is associated with Jef Gilson and Henri Texier. A total of 15 songs in which the two performers display their eye-opening acrobatics, including unexpected electric modulation, creating an insanely hip groove at the edge of indigestion. This magical production work was done by Christian Bonneau, a genius in the French radio music world who has worked on many national treasure-class libraries for Dominique Andre and Yan Tregger. GURU GURU The 1971 Bremen Concert CD
"In 1971, Guru Guru had already released two LPs on Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser's Ohr label, distributed by Metronome in Hamburg, namely UFO (1970) and Hinten (1971). On September 21, 1971, Guru Guru played in the then line-up of Mani Neumeier (drums, vocals), Uli Trepte (bass) and Ax Genrich (guitar) in the auditorium of the Bremen High School at Leibnizplatz. The sound engineers of Radio Bremen were present and took the opportunity to record the concert. Guru Guru's program that evening consisted of three long pieces with extensive improvisations: the almost 24-minute opener 'LSD Marsch' was taken from the 1970 debut album, followed by 'Bo Diddley' and 'Space Ship' from the then current second album. 'Hinten' had just been released shortly before the Bremen concert and had already caused quite a stir in the press. 'With this recording, sound engineer Conny Plank has created a masterpiece,' wrote the German music magazine Sounds: 'The Gurus have musically changed a lot for the better, their music is no longer so nervous and scattered, the long, free excursions of the three instrumentalists now lie over calm, drawn-out bass lines and a powerfully marching drum set.' The idiosyncratic blend of rock, jazz and funk with African polyrhythms and psychedelic sound cascades is finally available in its full length and revised form in record stores."

DROSSELBART Drosselbart LP
"Was Drosselbart a Krautrock band just because they came from Munich like Amon D??l, sang in German and released their first and only album on a major German record label in 1971? 'No,' says Monika Vincent-Gunia aka Jemima, Drosselbart's singer. 'We were the first punk band in Germany. The guys in the band could only play three chords, maybe four, but they were burning with enthusiasm.' However, Drosselbart's music on the album of the same name has very little to do with the punk of the mid-seventies. The guys had obviously practiced a bit and managed to get more than four chords down. The whole thing sounds a lot like the 1960s, occasionally reminiscent of harder rock, psychedelic US bands like Iron Butterfly or the music of British blues rockers like Brian Auger and Julie Driscoll. Keyboardist Christian Trachsel contributes some progressive moments and guest musician Ralf Nowy adds a classical touch. As already mentioned, the vocals are sung in German by Jemima and Peter Randl. The latter prefers a more aggressive, agitated, declamatory style, as known from various German political rock bands of the early '70s. The recordings were made at the Union Studios in Munich, where a young sound engineer named Reinhold Mack is said to have assisted the band and provided the mix. From the mid-1970s, Mack went on to make a career as a sound mixer and producer for the likes of ELO, Sparks, Deep Purple and, most notably, Queen."

An abrasive 13th Floor Elevators number and the iconic Richard Hell "(I Belong To The) Blank Generation". It is fascinating listening to the early versions of these songs that eventually appeared on Marquee Moon. Lazy, Soft & Slow should warm your soul for many Sunday mornings to come. This album is magic, and the title says everything about the music.

MARLEY & THE WAILERS, BOB Soul Rebels LP
2025 repress. LP version. Radiation Roots presents a reissue of Bob Marley and The Wailers' Soul Rebels, originally issued in 1970. Easily one of the greatest roots reggae albums of all time, Soul Rebels resulted from the intensive partnership brokered by the group and maverick producer, Lee 'Scratch' Perry. It was the first Wailers 'concept' album, conceived as a long-player based on a rebellious theme, rather than a collection of isolated singles, and the presence of the Barrett brothers in the rhythm section pointed the way for greater glories to come. The Wailers first formed as an unruly five-piece in 1963, with Junior Braithwaite as lead singer and Beverley Kelso an early member, sometimes replaced by Cherry Green. During their long tenure at Studio One, Bob Marley gradually shifted to the lead vocal role and the robust core of Marley, Peter Tosh, and Neville Livingston, aka Bunny Wailer, soon emerged as the mainstays of the group. Perry was involved with the Wailers at Studio One, using their talents for backing vocals on some of his solo work, but the partnership that yielded Soul Rebels was in an entirely different league. The title track, Tosh's anguished "400 Years and "Corner Stone" are legendary for their intense power; "It's Alright" set the template for the later "Night Shift," "My Cup" was an individual barebones reading of James Brown's "I Guess I'll Have To Cry Cry Cry," while the playful "Try Me" and "No Water" are suggestive odes. Tosh's dejected "No Sympathy" and the spirited "Soul Almighty" are other winners and the "Cloud 9" revamp "Rebel's Hop" is another joy. All killer, no filler!

OVER-GAIN OPTIMAL DEATH Die Underground LP
Die Young, Die Broke. A new mantra for the most depraved connoisseurs of psychedelic punk. For fans of Mainliner, Brainbombs, Les Rallizes Denudes, Stooges, Mot?rhead, MC5. A critique and embrace of self-destruction, esoteric vanity and inevitable ruin. The molten-red LP on Riot Season Records plunges deep into an abuse of distortion, existential doom and primal Stooges-like chaos. LA's acid punk power trio returns to its line up, now wielding a second addition in twin-drum assault. Jasso (guitar/vocals) is seemingly out for blood on this four-track studio album, leading a violent dive into the abyss. Japanese underground fury meets Hendrix's wreckage, fuzz-drenched wah freak-outs compete against raw punk vocals caught in an endless slap back delay. Over-Gain Optimal Death are an acid punk power trio formed in 2008 hailing from Los Angeles, and now currently hiding out somewhere in the South of France. Fronted by guitarist/ vocalist Jasso (Psychedelic Speed Freaks, Antarcticans), they push a special niche product of blown-out extreme psychedelic noise rock. Their sound is enveloped in a total nihilist "No Hope" atmosphere of heavy lyrics and distortion, mating intoxicating pulsing repetition, hyperactive improvisations and out of body guitar solos. Resurrecting US '60s punk and acid-riffage from the likes of Blue Cheer, the Stooges, MC5 and live Hendrix Experience, Over-Gain Optimal Death also draws greatly on the in-the-red sound aesthetic and high energy of the "Speed Freak Underground" and hardcore scene of '80s/'90s Japan. Limited to 300 on molten red vinyl. Housed in matt finished outer sleeve with double sided insert, download code and hype sticker.

WOOFF, TORIA Toria Wooff LP
LP version. Debut album from Bolton-born gothic-folk songwriter Toria Wooff. English folk is about to enter a beguiling new era; tales of the beautifully strange. Singing stories woven of love, loss, hope, and womanhood, Toria Wooff's self-titled debut album offers an antidote to demons; a contemporary twist on the Anglo folk which whisper a word to the wise; never judge a book by its cover. Like tales of the unexpected lingering in the dewy mist of the Lancashire moors surrounding her hometown, Toria Wooff is anything but linear. With each song written independently of the other, and yet, working together like a compendium of short stories in a well-thumbed cloth-bound novel, hope lies at its heart and buckles under emotional weight like the hefty influence of the gothic literature, ghost stories of English medieval scholar M.R. James, and the British Library's Tales of the Weird adorning her bookshelves. The artwork even sees Toria herself, lounging across a church pew in the haunted 15th Century Medieval Mansion, Stanley Palace. Both an exorcism of torment and an invitation to feeling the good, it offers a more palatable pill to swallow. Album opener "The Plough" and imagined ghost story "The Waltz of Winter Hey" explore the physical and metaphysical truth of womanhood, whilst love and commitment eeks through the cracks on reassuringly uplifting "That's What Falling In Love Will Do." Elsewhere "Song for A" and "Lefty's Motel Room" contend with the impact of death, lovingly reviving the spirit of her own MIA partner-in-crime, Alicia. Whilst tugging at the cloaks of contemporary folk souls Jake Xerxes Fussell or Richard Dawson, each track also transcends time with roots deeply entwined in the seventies lyrical narratives of Led Zeppelin, Fairport Convention, and Townes Van Zandt. Recorded with producer and mix engineer James Wyatt, at his Sloe Flower studio in Chester with the organ recorded in Wales, the objective was simple; show restraint. With Toria's reassuring vocals and guitar taking the lead, it is only at the end of "Sweet William" when the band join in, whilst rousing strings on "Seeing Things Through" crescendo at the perfect point through instinct rather than intent -- adding its own challenges.

LANCASTER, BYARD The Complete Palm Recordings 1973-1974 7LP BOX
2025 restock. Souffle Continu presents Byard Lancaster -- The Complete Palm Recordings 1973-1974, the definitive seven LP deluxe package of Philadelphia born jazz wizard Byard Lancaster, including his four legendary albums released on Jef Gilson's Palm Records in the 1970s: Us, Mother Africa, Exactement, and Funny Funky Rib Crib, along with the first ever standalone edition of "Love Always," a fifteen minute modal jazz beauty plus a 20-page booklet with rare photos and in-depth article about Byard Lancaster's Parisian years by Pierre Cr?pon. At the beginning of the 1960s, at the Berklee College of Music, Byard Lancaster met some feisty friends: Sonny Sharrock, Dave Burrell, and Ted Daniel. Once he was settled in New York, he appeared on Sunny Murray Quintet, recorded under the leadership of the drum crazy colleague of Albert Ayler. In 1968, the saxophonist and flutist recorded his first album under his own name: It's Not Up To Us. He would come back to France in 1971 and in 1973. This is when he met Jef Gilson, the pianist and producer who encouraged him to record under his own name again. On Palm Records (Gilson's label), he would release four albums: Us, Mother Africa, Exactement, and Funny Funky Rib Crib. Us, the first of the four records was recorded on November 24th, 1973 with Sylvin Marc on electric bass and the evergreen Steve McCall on drums. A few months after recording Us, Lancaster recorded Mother Africa along with Clint Jackson III, a trumpeter, partner of Khan Jamal or Noah Howard on other recordings. The recording of Exactement required two sessions in the studio: February 1st and May 18th 1974. Two names appear on the cover of Exactement: Lancaster (Byard) and Speller (Keno). Funny Funky Rib Crib is an unforgettable recording (made up of several sessions dating from the middle of 1974) of creative jazz overwhelmed by funk and soul. If Lancaster had already made successful albums in the same genre, this one is an homage to James Brown and Sammy Davis. The magnificent "Love Always" was originally released on the fourth (and last) volume of the Jef Gilson Anthology series released in 1975. Recorded on 8th March 1974, it is a beautiful 15-minute-long modal jazz piece. Four notes from the bass (the relentless Jean-Fran?ois Catoire, who makes up the rhythm section alongside drummer Jonathan Dickinson and percussionist Keno Speller), and the group is up and running! On piano, Gilson shows the subtle tact of a sideman, leaving the lions' share of the place to the horns. And if further proof was required of the confidence that Byard Lancaster and Jef Gilson inspire, "Love Always" provides it on this one-sided release exclusive to the box set. Carefully restored and remastered by Gilles Laujol. Graphic design by Stefan Thanneur.

ASHBY, DOROTHY Soft Winds: The Swinging Harp of Dorothy Ashby with Terry Pollard, Jimmy Cobb, Herman Wright LP
2025 repress. Sowing Records present a reissue of Dorothy Ashby's Soft Winds: The Swinging Harp of Dorothy Ashby, originally released in 1961. Features female vibes player Terry Pollard. Comes with a version of The Skatalites' "Guns Of Navarone" which is a pretty surreal listening experience. Clear vinyl; edition of 300.From the original liner notes: "Dorothy Ashby may not be the first jazz harpist (Caspar Reardon) or the first female jazz harpist (Adele Girard), but her good feeling for time and ability to construct melodic, guitar-like lines, mark her as the most accomplished modern jazz harpist (...) Accompanying her was another Detroit girl, Terry Pollard. Terry's main instrument is the piano and she is one of the best in the country, bar none. She is also a pretty fair country vibraharpist and in this set, Miss Pollard plays vibes exclusively. With them is still another Detroiter, Herman Wright, who like Miss Pollard has worked with Terry Gibbs and Yusef Lateef, and who also served as Miss Ashby's regular bassist. (...) Completing the quartet is Jimmy Cobb, drummer for the Miles Davis group. During the proceedings, Cobb travels between brushes and sticks without upsetting the equilibrium of this essentially quiet set. There is wide range of material presented here, from blues like Benny Goodman's title number, 'Soft Winds', and Miss Ashby's 'With Strings Attached', to movie themes such as 'Laura', 'Wild Is the Wind', and 'Guns Of Navarone'. Then there are works by such superior writers of standards as Kurt Weill ('My Ship'); Gershwin ('The Man I Love' and 'Love Is Here To Stay')."

BEN, JORGE Samba Esquema Novo LP
2025 restock; reissue. First released in 1963 on Phillips Records, this was Jorge Ben's debut album. Samba Esquema Novo ("New Style Samba") deliberately sets a new standard in Brazilian music. A beautiful, fresh and vital combination of Ben's percussive guitar and smooth/rough voice backed by big band style horns, percussion (the great Dom Um Romao), and strings. In 2007, it was listed by Rolling Stone Brazil as one of the 100 best Brazilian albums in history. But it's important to remind you that this is the album that contains the first original version of "Mas Que Nada", one of the most popular songs in the world. Clear vinyl.

HAMPER TRIO, GUY Chatham's Burning EP 7"
"The Guy Hamper Trio was formed by Billy Childish, after a chat with his friend James Taylor (Hammond organ). Billy and James had played respectively in The Milkshakes and The Prisoners, often sharing the same bill in the early '80s, leading to Billy's blues ensemble The Natural Born Lovers being the support act for the early shows of The James Taylor Quartet. The Guy Hamper Trio is: Billy Childish on guitar, his wife Julie on bass and Wolf on drums -- who as it happens was the drummer in the original incarnation of JTQ -- and of course features James Taylor on Hammond organ. The Guy Hamper Trio provide a bottom end, Blues-influenced instrumental mayhem for those unafraid of dirt, germs and true grime. With no particular wish other than to be recognized as the best at playing badly, they refuse to obey the usual rules of combat and music. Their first 45 (Polygraph Test/Sally Sensation) was released in 2009, followed by a full-length studio album, All The Poisons In The Mud, appearing, as if by magic, in 2022, followed by five 7" singles, and also two further full-length albums. This fully-loaded three-track 7" EP includes 'Chatham's Burning' on the opening face, with Face B including 'A Common Disease and 'If People Don't Like It', both featuring Bash Brand on drums, and Tub Johnson on bass. Once again, after consultation with experts in the field, it was decreed that for the enjoyment of Mods, jive experts, lost revellers, and those prone to frequent discotheques, these tracks needed to be on a 7" single and made available throughout England, the UK, Europe, the USA, Indonesia and indeed Portsmouth."

AUTISTIC DAUGHTERS Uneasy Flowers LP
Limited 2025 restock, last copies. R.I.P. Dean Roberts. Released on CD in March of 2008 on Kranky, Uneasy Flowers is the second album by New Zealand's Autistic Daughters, the intercontinental trio of Dean Roberts (guitar, vocals), Martin Brandlmayr (percussion, computer) and Werner Dafeldecker (guitar, bass). It is also the fourth in a series of records in which Roberts, having begun in more abstract territory in New Zealand's mid-1990s "free noise" ferment, has embraced song, lyric and voice as vessels for topographic and psychoanalytic tracings of the impacts of territory and nomadism on the subject. This is reflected by the shape-shifting nature of the outfit: while Autistic Daughters (whose name comes from a lyric from their first record Jealousy And Diamond) are resolutely a trio, they also work in cinematic format, with ancillary players behind the trio's complex, worm-turning arrangements: in this instance, Chris Abrahams of The Necks, Martin Siewert and Valerio Tricoli. With Uneasy Flowers, Roberts traces the internal and external workings of one protagonist: or, rather, a protagonist who "contains multitudes," a Whitmanian figure that dissolves the unified self. Rather, this character, "Rehana," embodies multiplicity and fragmentation in order to both a) address loss and b) aim toward transfiguration, transcendence. There are traces in the lyrics -- traces of addiction and desire, myth and transformation -- that are obliquely reflected in the music's structure, its uneasy tension between the pop song (the "moment") and experiment (the "process"). In some ways, it reminds of the structural, loop-based cinema of figures like Malcolm LeGrice: taking one moment and stretching it, the better to capture its nuances and to draw out all the repressed material caught in the mise-en-sc?ne, the hidden, cloaked content that erupts when your world spirals out of your control and gets caught in webs of interpersonal politic. The move from intimacy to the capture of the "greater picture" enacted by both lyric and music here resembles a camera dollying out, a shift of perspective unsettling for its vertigo-inducing qualities. Experimental deconstructionism within a pop framework that is contemplative, well-crafted, and gracefully unsettling.

S.Y.P.H. Pst CD
With their unpredictable live performances and songs such as "Zur?ck zum Beton" and "Industriem?dchen," S.Y.P.H. caused a ruckus at the end of the '70s -- as one of the bands that began to write lyrics in German around D?sseldorf's Ratinger Hof. Right from the start, the band broke with genre-conformist expectations and borrowed from rock, punk and kraut just as much as from Dadaism and the reality of everyday life. After the first album and several singles, the band produced two more albums -- Pst and S.Y.P.H. -- together with CAN's Holger Czukay. Tapete Records is now releasing both albums and a collection of previously unreleased rarities -- Punkraut 1978-1981."Peter Braatz (Harry Rag), Jojo Wolter, Ulli Putsch and myself in 1980 in Can's so-called Innerspace Studio in Weilerswist: what a happening! I probably still don't have the words to describe how I felt. Were we excited? Of course we were -- and then some. It was a non-stop flight to the center of the universe, to the Holy of Holies, way beyond our musical imagination. After all, except for the first LP Monster Movie, this is where all the wonderful masterpieces of the very best international German band that we all love so dearly were created. Pure magic was at work here. Future Days had already been a promise for me when I was still a student -- and now the four of us were right at the center of our musical dreams. We could suddenly play whatever we wanted. Okay, on the first day we were all still pretty tense. But Holger Czukay kept encouraging us and quickly managed to loosen us all up a little. And then the thing took off. So there was always an urgent desire within us to create intuitive music without making agreements up front, where everyone was listening to their inner self and at the same time to their fellow musicians -- that's what the Pst, i.e. 'Shh' is about! -- creating music together in the moment. A free, direct way of composing. The spatial atmosphere of the Innerspace Studio contributed significantly to us being able to realize this wish. The studio as a living musical universe. A large, truly infinite space without barriers, where all four of us were in our element." --Uwe Jahnke

DER MODERNE MAN 80 Tage auf See LP
LP version. Der Moderne Man formed in 1979 and operated mainly in the vicinity of Hanover's No Fun label. Inspired by visits to concerts and record stores in London and New York and bands such as the Ramones, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Iggy Pop, and the Clash, the group developed an explosive sound that led to the first album 80 Tage auf See ("80 days at sea") in 1980: German-language post-punk that stood out from Hanover's underground sound and also gained support from BBC's John Peel. Tapete Records now re-issues their first two studio albums. This is accompanied by Jugend Forscht, a compilation of demos, EPs and singles with some unreleased tracks. All three releases are complemented by detailed liner notes and previously unreleased images. 80 Tage auf See captures a historic moment. When the record was released in 1980, the so-called "Neue Deutsche Welle" (German New Wave) was no more than a rumor. It was still far from clear what (post-)punk on West German terms might entail. 80 Tage auf See was recorded over a short time span and hurled onto the market just as swiftly. The 80 days of the album title most likely do not refer to time spent in the studio. This release occupies one of the top spots in the race for the very first German punk album. It is perhaps the first "first German punk LP" that managed to reproduce the force and urgency of the English original, albeit in a way so deferred and strange that the term "Krautpunk" comes to mind. Der Moderne Man was to Damned and Wire what Amon D??l II was to Hawkwind and Vanilla Fudge. No wonder John Peel kept the record in his show's heavy rotation. Shortly after the release of 80 Tage auf See, the basically postnatal New German Wave disbanded into fractions whose initial hostility towards each other gradually turned into indifference. The remains were something like 'Deutschpunk' (not 'Krautpunk') here, avant-garde neo-tonality there and in between some more or less successful attempts to establish contemporary German pop music. On 80 Tage auf See, all of this is still on equal footing: (power) pop, the catchy wave punk which would become the signature sound of Hannover's No Fun label and the rather idiosyncratic idea of experimental music which Michael Jarick (aka Ziggy XY) brought in as a singer.

DER MODERNE MAN Jugend Forscht (Singles, EPs & Demos 1980-1983) 2LP
Double LP version. Der Moderne Man emerged from the vicinity of Hanover's No Fun label, an incubator for a scene somewhere in between punk, avant-garde and new wave. In addition to two studio albums, the band recorded various demos, EPs and singles between 1981 and 1983. These songs, which did not appear on the two regular albums, are now being re-issued for the first time as an independent compilation. Jugend Forscht spans an arc from the first EP to early demo recordings and a single that was never released as a regular album to the German-language New Wave of the last mini-LP Neues aus Hong Kong. The tracks collected on Jugend Forscht tell the story and development of Der Moderne Man in an impressive way. The compilation is supplemented by detailed liner notes and some never-before-published images. Der Moderne Man combined a wide range of influences: the punk rock minimalism of guitarist Eckhardt 'EKT' Kurtz, English music magazines, imported records bought during visits to Berlin, the hyperactivity of drummer Claudius Hempelmann and the lyrics of Michael 'Ziggy XY' Jarick with their very own view of everyday life. After touring with five other bands from the No Fun label and new drummer Felix Wolter, Der Moderne Man released a live mini-LP and produced the LP Unmodern with the additional band member Thomas 'Tonio Scorpo' Schnura on saxophone and synthesizer. With the addition of bass player Axel Wicke, 1982 was shaped by numerous tours and positive to euphoric reviews. Soon, major record companies were coming along with offers, but the band (for the most part) rejected the industry's temptations. Der Moderne Man incorporated influences from England and the USA on their 1983 mini-LP Neues aus Hong Kong. This could have meant a career boost, but German audiences were tired out by the glut of cheap German new wave industry output and the band subsequently dropped out in autumn of that year. The songs now compiled on Jugend Forscht show that Hannover was capable of more than just rock music.

Of all the independent record labels of the 1980s, ?l was the most singular and exciting. ?l only existed for a few short years and yet paradoxically -- given its modest commercial success -- was hugely influential. For writer Jonathan Coe, one of the label's many devotees, ?l was "Britain's great musical secret." This "best of" compilation LP, curated by label supremo Mike Alway himself, reminds the world of the greatness of ?l. ?l was created in 1984 by Alway, a mercurial A&R man for Cherry Red signing outstanding artists like Everything But the Girl, The Monochrome Set, and Felt. Alway briefly co-ran Blanco Y Negro (an offshoot of WEA) but was soon constrained by the conservativism of the commercial music sector and left to set up his own label. Alway's "hands on" approach was to take complete control of the philosophy of the label's releases and even the titles of songs in the manner of pop impresarios of the past. Alway became a curator, selecting, shaping and overseeing the records issued on ?l. He employed songwriters proficient in classical pop techniques such as Nicholas Currie (AKA Momus) and Philippe Auclair (AKA Louis Philippe) who issued their own records while writing, arranging and performing for other ?l artistes. Great musicians such as Simon Turner (AKA The King of Luxembourg), Dean 'Speedball' Brodrick, and producer Richard Preston completed the picture. ?l was critically acclaimed in the UK and popular in America and mainland Europe but in Japan had a profound effect, directly influencing the Shibuya-kei phenomenon that included Pizzicato Five, Kahimi Karie, and Cornelius. The Rubens Room accompanies the book Bright Young Things by Mark Goodall (Ventil) the first publication to tell the fascinating story of the music found on The Rubens Room. Mike Alway writes in his sleeve notes that "?l was the joy of my life. It was monumental." Featuring Louis Philippe, Anthony Adverse, The King of Luxembourg, Would-Be-Goods, Marden Hill, Bad Dream Fancy Dress, The Monochrome Set, Always, and Momus.

NILSEN, FREDRIK LAFMS: The Raymond Building, 1976 Book
"This is a 32-page perfect bound book of photographs by Fredrik Nilsen documenting three months in 1976 when members of the Los Angeles Free Music Society, aka the LAFMS, occupied studios in the 35 South Raymond building in what was then the derelict district of Old Town Pasadena. Some images were taken as promotional photos for their upcoming infamous performances at the Brand Library & Art Center in Glendale, California in July of that year. Others show the general mayhem that transpired in an ultra-creative moment in the history of this experimental sound art collective. The LAFMS was officially founded in 1975 and continues to this day in various collaborating ensembles and individuals. Depicted are legendary sound artists including Joe and Rick Potts, Tom Recchion, Dennis Duck Mehaffey, Chip Chapman, Juan Gomez, and Harold Schroeder."

MADTEO Misto Atmosferico E Ad Azione Diretta 2LP
Madteo is one of the great eccentric visionaries of electronic music and his new album Misto Atmosferico E Ad Azione Diretta on Unsure once more happens to be a mind-bending piece of art. Misto Atmosferico E Ad Azione Diretta shifts between focused gritty grooves and the long freeform associative adventures that you haven't heard before, never static, sometimes overwhelming, always on edge. The opener "Cans People" is an archaic rave monster, "To Know Those Who" is non-linear dub techno, "Nocturnal Palates" expands the "Filter House" universe and "Rave Nite Itz All Right" hits you hard and strange (yet subtle, in a way). The last two tracks then let loose; Madteo manipulates time, space and sounds to create the psychedelic secrets of "Luglio Ottantotto." And "Emo G (Sticky Wicket)" explores the outskirts not only of house or techno or whatever but music in general, a 15-min-trip through the low frequencies, the rumble, the dark hearts and the enchantment. Breathtaking. Bring The Voodoo Down.

BUFFET LUNCH Perfect Hit! LP
Buffet Lunch have been a band since 2017. They are a pop group formed of musicians based in Glasgow, Edinburgh and (sometimes) Newcastle. Described previously as a band that creates "a hodgepodge of noises" who are "lyrically ridiculous." Both claims are strongly denied by the group. Buffet Lunch have released three EPs and two LPs since 2019, and six months after self-releasing For Display Purposes Only, they are back on Upset the Rhythm with their third album Perfect Hit! Perfect Hit! was recorded in the West Highlands, in the shadow of the UK's Biggest Ben, during Leap Year week 2024. George Horler (Holy Loaf) joined the band as recording engineer along with new members Matthew Lord and Jack Shearer plus founding members Perry O'Bray and Luke Moran, to spend a week writing and creating the record. The majority of the record was completed in the studio, with as much recorded "live" as possible. Most of the songs are new and only been played a few times live. Lyrically, the album contains more deliberately personal lyrics than previous records, with several songs addressing ancestry and becoming a parent. Elsewhere, the songs deal with thorny issues such as; identity and full face tattoos, hands, legs and a swordfish sighting, the importance of kindness, disgraced Presbyterian John Knox, a potentially disgraced sportsman featuring star turn from Beef Jerk front man Jack Randall Lee and historical consciousness via Wikipedia. Musically, the aim (as ever) was to make an album which is as fun to listen to as it was to make. These are mostly playful pop songs with a focus on melody and hooks. There are approximately 40% more guitar chords featured on Perfect Hit! than on previous records.

EARTHBALL Actual Earth Music: Volume 1 & 2 LP
Two euphoric and crushing live sets from Vancouver Island's experimental rock demolition unit Earthball, featuring improv legends Steve Beresford and Chris Corsano. Pressing of 500 copies worldwide on 180gm black vinyl. Actual Earth Music: Volume 1 & 2 presents two caustic, yet alluringly unreal live sets from Canadian noise-rock entropy hunters Earthball. Following on from the group's critically appraised It's Yours LP (UTR 164LP, 2024), this release captures the band at the peak of their powers, playing live, composing spontaneously. Side A features Earthball live at The Fox Cabaret in Vancouver, supporting Wolf Eyes on August 4, 2023. Jeremy Van Wyck from the band considers this "the gig that sent us into orbit, really. Causing Olson & Young to wax poetic about our interstellar jams to a fine bloke across the big sea. Upsetting our casual rhythm and forcing our hand. All that talk led to an LP, It's Yours, and a full UK tour the following spring." Now, with the birth of this live series Actual Earth Music, it seems only fitting that Volume 1 should be this gig. It's a doozy. Listening back is a pure revelation. Earthball whip up a vortex of thrashing wild energy, the ecstatic release is off the charts. "You don't always catch every nuance of the jams as they come down. I mean, this one felt good, but upon listening back to the tapes, it sounded very good" confides Jeremy. "It reminded me of Von Trier's Melancholia: the sound of a large sphere coming toward you to bring doom. However, this one reverses course, heading away to some other shore, bathing you in reflective bliss before saying goodbye -- instead of ending humanity as we know it." Volume 2 occupies Side B of this LP, showcasing a collaborative summit from the second night of their recent Caf? OTO residency on May 21, 2024. This event featured Earthball laying down three separate sets -- all collaborations. This second recording presents their opening performance and features pivotal UK improv luminary Steve Beresford on piano and free-jazz phenomenon Chris Corsano on drums.

GHETTO BROTHERS Power-Fuerza LP
2025 repress. The Bronx in the 1970s, marked by the presence of notorious gangs, presented a complex and challenging urban landscape. Amidst the crumbling infrastructure and economic decline, neighborhoods bore the scars of disinvestment, reflected in abandoned buildings and neglected public spaces. The prevalence of street gangs, such as the Ghetto Brothers, contributed to an atmosphere of heightened tension and occasional violence. Graffiti adorned subway cars and buildings, expressing both social unrest and the vibrant creativity of the community. Despite the challenges, there was a resilient spirit among residents, evidenced by grassroots efforts to address social issues. The Bronx during this era was a dynamic yet tumultuous mix of cultural expression, social struggle, and the determined spirit of a community facing adversity. The Ghetto Brothers, originating from the Melendez family who moved from Puerto Rico to the South Bronx in the 1950s, faced challenges involving violence and crime. Despite this, Benjy, a key figure, directed the group towards community improvement. The Ghetto Brothers embraced music, crafting a potent, NYC-flavored musical fusion that caught the attention of record mogul Ismael Maisonave (Salsa Records). Their collaboration resulted in the recording of eight tracks in a single electrifying day at Manhattan's Fine Tone Studios, skillfully produced by Latin studio maestro Bobby Marin (Harvey Averne, La Lupe, Brooklyn Sounds). This musical odyssey showcases the band's ability to seamlessly blend genres, creating a NYC-flavored stew that captivates listeners with its authenticity. The hypnotic rhythms, infectious guitar riffs, and impassioned vocals reflect the Ghetto Brothers' commitment to expressing their unique experiences and uplifting their community through the universal language of music. Power-Fuerza is not just an album; it's a sonic testament to the Ghetto Brothers' fusion of resilience, cultural richness, and musical innovation. Each track is a vibrant tapestry, weaving together the raw energy of the South Bronx streets and the soulful melodies born from the trio's Puerto Rican heritage. Embrace the timeless resonance of the Ghetto Brothers' Power-Fuerza, one of the best Latin funk albums ever recorded.

GOODALL, MARK Bright Young Things: The Art And Philosophy Of El Records Book
Paperback, 251 pages, illustrated, 13x19.5 cm. Existing for a few short years (1984 - 1988), ?l records was perhaps the most "cult" of the UK so-called "indie" labels. ?l records was created in 1984 by Mike Alway. Alway was A&R man for Cherry Red signing artists such as Everything But the Girl, The Monochrome Set, and Felt. Alway left Cherry Red to help run Blanco Y Negro (an offshoot of WEA) but soon felt constrained but the conservativism of the commercial music sector and left to set up his own label. ?l was once described as "the most innately English record label there has ever been" and yet had a global appeal. Alway's mercurial approach was to take complete control of the repertoire, the philosophy of the label's releases and even the titles of songs in the manner of pop impresarios of the past. He became a curator, selecting, shaping and overseeing the records issued on ?l. He employed songwriters proficient in classical pop techniques such as Nicholas Currie (AKA Momus) and Philippe Auclair (AKA Louis Philippe) who in addition to issuing their own records wrote, arranged and performed for other ?l artistes and used creative talents such as photographer Nick Wesolowski and designer Jim Phelan to create the ?l "look." ?l had a unique flavor eschewing the traditions of rock and indie music of the mid 1980s, exhibiting instead a taste for 1960s bubbelgum and chamber pop, the European chanson tradition, Latin rhythms and film scores (one of ?l's key players was child prodigy Simon Turner who wrote music for the films of Derek Jarman). The ethos of the label was decidedly un-macho and many of ?l's key artists were female. ?l's first single "I, Bloodbrother Be" by Shock Headed Peters was an uncompromising gay anthem. Alway saw ?l as a celebration of elegance and beauty, in his own words, "a pop world beyond leather jackets and jeans". While record sales were disappointing, this unique blend was critically acclaimed in the UK and popular in America and mainland Europe while in Japan ?l had a profound effect, directly influencing the Shibuya-kei phenomenon that included Pizzicato Five, Cornelius, and Kahimi Karie. Bright Young Things is the first book to tell the fascinating story of ?l, one of the most influential indie labels of all time.

CURE, THE Faith LP
2025 restock. 140 gram LP on grey vinyl. Recorded in 1981, this classic album took the band further down the road of despair, initiated with Seventeen Seconds, with an album full of mournful atmospheric tracks, including their hit single, "Primary". "Robert Smith has expressed his appreciation for the music of Joy Division and I would say that this album, Faith, is The Cure's Closer -- dark, monotone, toy drumming with layers of anguish and compelling lyrics. 'The Funeral Party' is like Joy Division's 'Eternal' -- dealing with loss in an effective, but original way. I compare The Cure's Faith album to Joy Division's Closer only to express how well I feel Robert Smith managed to make an effective album -- this is original, unique and beautiful music."

MYSTERY KINDAICHI BAND, THE The Adventures of Kindaichi Kosuke LP
2025 repress; LP version. Obi; includes four-page insert. Wewantsounds present the first official release outside of Japan for The Mystery Kindaichi Band's The Adventures of Kindaichi Kosuke, originally released in 1977. The "imaginary" soundtrack to the cult detective book series by writer Seishi Yokomizo is on many DJ want-lists. Arranged by soundtrack master Kentaro Haneda and featuring a mysterious group of the best '70s Japanese Funk musicians, the album is pure undiluted disco funk. Writer Seishi Yokomizo is an institution in Japan. He could be compared to Agatha Christie with his series of novels based on the adventures of detective Kosuke Kindaichi. The fictional character was born in 1946 with Yokomizo's first novel in the series and solved mysteries until the late '70s under Yokomizo's pen before the death of the writer in 1981. Yokomizo's novels have been a prime source for film and TV scenarios, so when, in 1977, Japanese label King Records decided to record a concept album based on the Kindaichi novels, it made complete sense. The writer was slightly surprised though. The concept album was arranged by pianist Kentaro Haneda, a key TV and film composer who has worked on many anime films and is also famous outside of Japan for composing the music for the video game Wizardry. For the album, he assembled a supergroup of some of the best Tokyo funk and city pop musicians. The long list includes jazz pianist Hideo Ichikawa who played on the 1971 Joe Henderson In Japan album, drummer Jun Moriya, who is on Joe Hisaichi's cult Wonder City Orchestra album (1982), percussionist Tadaomi Anai who played with disco singer Eri Ohno, trumpeter Koji Hadori who's featured on Haruomi Hosono's Pacific album (1978). Also present on the album are saxophonist Takeru Muraoka who plays on many Tatsuro Yamashita cult albums including For You (1982) and Spacy (1977), Kimiko Yamauchi (koto) who's on Akiko Yano's landmark 1976 album Japanese Girl (WWSCD 017CD/WWSLP 017LP), and last but not least, French hornist Koji Yamaguchi who plays on Yazuaki Shimizu's Kakashi (1982). Together they lay the funk on ten instrumentals filled with pure disco and funk breakbeats, making the album one of the highly-coveted Japanese LPs on international cratedigger scene. Remastered from the original tapes. Faithfully reproduced original artwork; Artwork by renowned illustrator Ichibun Sugimoto. New introduction by Anton Spice.

RAHBANI, ZIAD Houdou Nisbi LP
2025 restock. Wewantsounds present the first ever vinyl release of Ziad Rahbani's Houdou Nisbi recorded in 1985 and only released on cassette and CD in 1991. One of Rahbani's most praised albums, released on the sought-after Lebanese label Relax-in. Mixing Arabic music with funk, jazz, boogie and a touch of Brazilian music, it is considered a classic among Oriental groove fans, DJs and collectors around the world. Curated by Lebanese DJ and Journalist Ernesto Chahoud. Ziad Rahbani is one of the giants of Arabic music and a cultural icon in the Middle East. The musician, pianist and producer is also a celebrated playwright and a political activist. Coming out of an illustrious artistic dynasty (his father, famous composer and musician Assi Rahbani, was in The Rahbani Brothers and his mother is the legendary Lebanese diva, Fairuz), Ziad Rahbani released a string of key albums in the '70s that have since become cult among DJs and collectors. Heavily influenced by Western music, Rahbani brought these influences to traditional Arabic music early one. 1978 saw the release of two key Rahbani albums, the disco 12" Abu Ali and Bennesbeh Labokra... Chou? (WWSLP 044LP). Serving as musical director to his mother Fairuz, he produced some of her best albums including Maarifti Feek recorded in 1984 at his Beirut studio, By Pass, bringing his blend of modern influences to her traditional sound. At the very same time, Rahbani started recording his own album at By Pass with the cream of Lebanese musicians including saxophonist Tewfic Farroukh, guitarist Paul Dawani, and percussionist Emile Boustani. Bringing funk, boogie, jazz funk fusion and Brazilian music to the mix, Rahbani created a landmark album, Houdou Nisbi now considered one of the best jazz funk albums from the Middle East. Featuring such cult tracks as "Rouh Khabbir", a remake of the Crusaders' "Soul Shadow" sung by Rahbani himself, the modern soul of "Bisaraha" and the Brazilian flavored "For Sure", the album is both effortlessly groovy and steeped in Oriental music. Houdou Nisbi, which means "relatively calm", an expression used by news anchors on Lebanese TV to describe the mood during cease-fire in the civil war that went on between 1975 and 1990. The cassette artwork has faithfully been reproduced for vinyl release. Remastered. New liner notes by Lebanese DJ and curator Ernesto Chahoud in English/French.

WARDA Khalik Hena LP
2025 restock. Wewantsounds present the first vinyl reissue of legendary Arabic diva Warda's Khalik Hena, recorded with full Egyptian orchestra and originally released on the label Soutelphan in 1973. A cult classic sampled by Jay Z and J Dilla, the album recorded in public mixes traditional Arabic music with a tinge of '70s grooves. Here, Warda delivers a hypnotic performance backed by her full-size orchestra featuring those unparalleled Arabic strings that made recordings by Oum Khalthoum, Farid El Atrache, and Abdel Halim Hafez so famous. Khalik Hena is one of her all-time classics, written by legendary composer Baligh Hamdi. Warda is one of the undisputed divas of the Arab world. Born in the Paris suburb from an Algerian father and a Lebanese mother, she was discovered at 11 by Ahmed Hachlaf, Pathe Marconi's heads of A&R specializing in Arabic music. having honed her singing skills at her father's cabaret in the Latin Quarter, the Tam-Tam (for Tunisia-Algeria-Morocco) she quickly found recognition in the Arabic music circles. The family relocated to Beirut in the late '50s after the police found arms in her father's cabaret destined to the political group fighting for Algeria's independence and was swiftly discovered there by an Egyptian film producer who brought her to Cairo to record and play in his films. From there, her career took a meteoric rise and she became a star working with Egyptian such stars as Abdel Halim Hafez and composer Mohammed Abdel Wahab. However, in the early '60s a traditional marriage in Algeria stopped her career for a decade to be a housewife until Algerian President Boumediene asked her to perform for the tenth anniversary of the Nation's independence in 1972. This was an epiphany and after a divorce she was back to Egypt for a triumphant comeback. Khalik Hena recorded in public in 1973 dates back to these glory days. Teaming up with her new husband, legendary composer Baligh Hamdi, she recorded a string of classic albums -- hypnotic tour-de-forces stretching over two sides in an almost trance-like mode, enhancing Warda's powerful vocal and ability to mesmerize audiences. Blending traditional and modern instrumentations (electric guitar, organ), the music is both complex and groovy, Khalik Hena is one of her best LPs, sought after by Arabic diggers and collectors alike. Remastered audio; original artwork and two-page insert with new introduction by Mario Choueiry from Institut du Monde Arabe who curates Wewantsounds' Arabic series of reissues.

KNOWLER, CAMERON Cameron Knowler LP
Featuring contributions from Jordan Tice (of Hawktail), Jay Bellerose, Harrison Whitford, Rayna Gellert, Dylan Day, Mark Goldenberg, Rich Hinman, and Robert Bowlin, this album, a self-titled affair, finds Cameron Knowler at an exciting crossroads between American tradition and forward looking guitar soli -- toeing the line between personal regionalism and the universality of landscape memory. Knowler draws on the history and geography of his birthplace of Yuma, Arizona -- a border town known for its lettuce production and defunct territorial prison. In line with the regional ethos of the composer Frantz Casseus and the minimalism of Bruce Langhorne, this instrumental guitar record launches into a world of desert sun, propane tanks, dark jail cells, and the verdant Colorado. Knowler ferries listeners across a sensitively crafted world with deft, understated playing, pushing the current of instrumental acoustic music forward through lush original compositions, while keeping an eye on tradition with his singular arrangements of old-time fiddle tunes. With what many describe as the closest thing to the right hand of Norman Blake, Knowler's delivery also nods to the work of creative outsiders Terry Allen and David Rawlings. With this work, Knowler sonically illuminates untold stories of the Sonoran, lending a voice to the pictorial canon made famous by Dorothea Lange and western films such as 3:10 to Yuma. There is a sense of interiority to the record as well, Knowler says, noting that he "grew up isolated, unschooled in a desert with very little contact with children my own age." He only returned to his hometown recently to revisit places held in memory, and this album stands as a direct result of unpacking those landscapes coded with personal darkness. By creating an outward-facing work of art, Knowler strives to "make sandcastles out of grief" and emblazon the diorama of his youth. Here, the world receives a sound poem, a memory palace that stands as a document of both personal grief and acceptance of the many dimensions of a place.

SWEET WILLIAMS Four Five 3LP
45 songs to commemorate 45 years of Sweet Williams aka Thomas House. Patchwork quilt or collaged map, this is his weirdest, funniest and darkest record to date. Thomas House has been busy in the years since Sweet Williams' last LP. Tunes that grew from fragments on old tapes or came fully formed in dreams in the small hours. He was sending Wrong Speed Records a fistful of new songs every couple of weeks. Nobody knew where this was leading. There was a half-joke about House releasing his own version of The White Album. Bringing in neighbor Carl Jehle to co-produce, the pair spent last summer putting Four Five together in long, delirious sessions, stretching through the forty-plus mid-afternoon heat into the balmy small hours. More than a hundred songs were on the table. A significant chunk of the work was completed while House recovered from emergency dental surgery. The results, House says, can be taken as a whole "if you're mad enough," or as three separate LPs. What's clear is that a triple LP has afforded the possibility to stretch out in directions Sweet Williams have not previously explored. Tape loops and warped, sampled voices butt up against brief, punky earworms. Influences are either worn on sleeves or nigh impossible to discern. Ever present, as ever, are repetition, space, and the sputtering growl of petrol guitars. Four Five is a masterpiece. The perfect mix of spontaneity and obsession; of serendipity and sheer force of will. Not to mention maybe the only justifiable triple album ever made. FFO: Hood, GBV, Lungfish, The Breeders.

TAKADA, MIDORI Through The Looking Glass LP
2025 restock; LP version. Comes in a Stoughton "Tip-On" jacket; Includes printed inner sleeves. Palto Flats and We Release Whatever The Fuck We Want Records present the highly-anticipated reissue of Japanese percussionist Midori Takada's sought after and timeless ambient/minimal album Through The Looking Glass, originally released in 1983 by RCA Japan. Considered a holy grail of Japanese music by many, Through The Looking Glass is Midori Takada's first solo endeavor, a captivating four-song suite capturing her deep quests into traditional African and Asian percussive language and exploring contemplative ambient sounds with an admirably precise use of marimba. The result is alternatively ethereal and vibrant, always precise and mesmerizing, and makes for an atmospheric masterpiece and an unparalleled sonic and spiritual experience. Midori Takada is a composer, multi-percussionist, and theater artist renowned in Japanese vanguard circles. Midori has released two solo albums: Through The Looking Glass and Tree Of Life (1999) and wrote music for Tadashi Suzuki's theater plays. Her hypnotic, minimalist music is based in the concept of coherence between sound and the human body. She performs solo on marimba and other percussion instruments. She debuted on the scene of Berlin Philharmonic, performing with the RIAS Symphonie-Orchester Berlin just after graduating from Tokyo University of the Arts in 1974. She continued her career with solo concerts in Japan and abroad. In the 1980s, Midori began to explore the traditional music of Asia and Africa. Her fascination resulted in joint projects with Kakraba Lobi from Ghana, Lamine Konte from Senegal, Farafina Band from Burkina Faso, and Korean musicians: zither player Chi Seong-Ja, flute player Won-Il, and saxophone player Kang Tae-Hwan. She also led Mkwaju Ensemble's innovative percussion project and still performs with free-jazz band Ton-Klami with Kang Tae-Hwan and jazz pianist Masahiko Satoh. Takada's compositions have a remarkable way of affecting the imagination. Her minimalist, contemplative music is filled with the concept of infinity and reminds us of a moon voyage, falling stars, a journey into the ocean, or a walk in the garden. The trans melodies, initially simple, begin to loop and splinter, their rhythm breaking and thickening, slowly drawing the listener into another reality. This fully licensed reissue comes with extensive liner notes.
