Bassist, composer and producer Shay Hazan returns with his third solo album, When It Rains It Pours, on Batov Records. Following the critical success of Reclusive Ritual and Wusul, Hazan takes a bold step forward, shifting from the guimbri-led sound that established his reputation to a broader palette of bass, guitar, and synth-driven compositions. Where his earlier work foregrounded the raw, earthy textures of Gnawa tradition, When It Rains It Pours reflects Hazan's evolution as a producer and multi-instrumentalist. Across eleven tracks, Hazan deepens his exploration of layered grooves, spiritual melodies, and experimental textures, resulting in his most expansive and personal statement to date. The album's title embodies Hazan's experience of being tested by life when multiple challenges arrived at once -- musically, personally, and physically. A painful period in which he was unable to play double bass or guimbri due to joint issues became the spark for rediscovering the electric bass, reconnecting him with an instrument he had set aside personal projects for years. The record documents this transition, capturing the tension between struggle and renewal. Unlike his previous guimbri-focused albums, Hazan's approach here highlights his growth as a studio craftsman. Sampling, layering, and textural exploration sit at the core, without losing the immediacy of live musicianship. The English blues revival was surely functional in developing a new series of performer and sub-genres. The hard rock revolution began from the power-chord of Cream and the likes, leading the way for a new "British invasion." Short lived four-piece Bedlam released one single studio album in 1973 led by the intense power of drummer extraordinaire Cozy Powell (Black Sabbath, Whitesnake, Rainbow, Jeff Beck). Their self-titled debut was enlightened by other amazing performers: vocalist Frank Aiello (formerly of pop duo The Truth) and brothers Dave (the guitarist who had recently replaced Robin Trower in Procol Harum) and Denny Ball (bass). The album was produced by Felix Pappalardi of Mountain fame. This is soulful proto-heavy metal at its best!

In the heart of 1990s Morocco, Cheb Nacer brought a new breeze to the popular music scene. Born in Oujda, he grew up surrounded by ra?, sta?fi and cha?bi before moving to Casablanca, where he blended these roots with the electronic sounds filling cabarets and clubs. Inspired by the international clips broadcast on 2M and RTM, he reimagined European hits in darija, creating a hybrid, dance-driven sound. "Ol? Ol? "1978's Slum in Dub album re-issued on purple vinyl. Coupled with the succinct Revolutionaries band and Isaacs quality songwriting, the deconstructed cuts, weave and flow like any good quality dub album should. with some of the track names giving more than a hint of the original song title such as 'Public Eyes,' which was one of the major hits off The Cool Ruler as John Public. The dense Slum originated as 'Party In The Slum,' while the brighter 'Reform Institution' began life as 'Uncle Joe.' 'Word Of The Farmer' becomes 'Croft' and 'Tam Tam' began life as 'One More Time.' One of Gregory Isaacs's early hits, 'Black A Kill Black' is translated into 'Leaving' while 'Leggo Beast' using an updated old Studio One rhythm, 'Swing Easy,' probably refers to Trevor 'Leggo' Douglas who ran the Cash & Carry label with Isaacs. The track 'N****r' also uses an old Studio One rhythm track updated and this time it's The Heptones breezy 'Party Time' which gets the Jammy treatment as too 'Embarrassment' which again revitalizes a Studio One gem; 'Frozen Soul' by The Soul Vendors band."

Having ended the '90s with the spirited Laughing Mostly compilation of singles and demos, Delta finally released their debut studio album of twelve songs in the summer of 2000 on the Dishy Recordings label. Accepting that this might be their sole studio album the band threw everything at these recordings allowing it to exist in its own sphere, unbothered by their contemporary generation and disregarding the idea of even releasing a single. Recorded at DEP International there was a notable difference to the scruffier, looser charm of their 1990s recordings, a tighter focus developed by having the experienced Lenny Franchi mixing the LP with them. Lenny had been working with a number of Island artists including My Bloody Valentine and Tricky so knew his way around a desk. There was also the question of budget, so every day counted. Ultimately though you can hear the joy in the recordings, even amongst the melancholy and angst. As James recently recalled in an interview in Shindig! Magazine: "It was such a big deal for us. It's one of my fondest memories doing that record. Everyone was happy. If there's anything that I'd stand by, I think it would be that." Louis Clark Jr joined the band towards the end of the '90s and brought a classically-trained element to the recordings particularly with his string arrangements. For "Cuckoo," "I Want You," and the prophetic "We Come Back" Louis brought in eight players from the Birmingham Conservatoire; the baroque style is partly why the record often receives comparisons to Love's "Forever Changes." On release Slippin' Out was a big favorite with writers at the NME, Mojo, and The Guardian again and before long the band were signed to Mercury/Universal for their second studio album Hard Light, a far more expensive and expansive love affair. It was a temporary palatial home where things quietly fell apart again, but that's another chapter."If long-term memory is nothing more than selective editing and only pop's most weighty visceral works are built to last then it's quite possible that in 50 years the Britpop era will be best recollected for the two bands it ostracized. Earlier this year we met Shack and thought their story of mercurial brilliance indicated the biggest music biz oversight of the '90s. We were wrong because we hadn't met Delta yet. Eternity's Children's self-titled album was released in 1968 on Capitol sublabel Tower Records, during the heyday of the hippie revolution. After touring with Strawberry Alarm Clock, the Seeds and the Blues Magoos, the band released their most successful single "Mrs. Bluebird" which reached #69 on the Billboard Hot 100. Their sunshine pop was clearly informed by west-coast influences and folk revivalist, but ended up offering a new take on the psychedelic revolution.

It's a DIY collection of different genres, from different countries across different decades, that are all bound by the same longing sentiment. A concept compilation! A seemingly disparate suite of selections of forgotten fables by more or less never-knowns, Sky Girl forms a beautifully coherent and utterly sublime whole deftly compiled by French collectors DJ Sundae and Julien Dechery. From Scott Seskind's adolescent musical road movie to Karen Marks' icy Oz-wave, the charming DIY storytelling of Italian-American go-getter Joe Tossini and the ethereal slow dance themes of Parisian artists Nini Raviolette and Hugo Weris, Sky Girl resonates on a wide spectrum historically, geographically and stylistically. It unites in a singular, longing, almost intangible ambience. If the names sound wholly unfamiliar that doesn't matter, the nature of the compositions swiftly nurtures an intimacy with these lonely, poignant, openhearted wanderers. Most were available in a very limited capacity at the time of their release, some were never really released at all - Gary Davenport declined to release "Sarra" after he split with the girl for whom the track is named - years later a friend convinced Davenport to allow him to put 100 copies online to sell and DJ Sundae was quick enough to snare one. Beyond their scarcity, these tracks are bound together by a certain raw beauty that's achievable when music is made and no one is listening. Sky Girl comprises of fifteen officially licensed songs, a two year international scavenger hunt through long-folded home label operations, the depths of internet forums and traceless acetates. From his formative years in Omaha's historic 24th & Lake district to his creative explorations in Los Angeles, Shepherd forged a sound that was at once fiercely personal and universally searching. Recorded in late-night sessions across Hollywood and Hermosa Beach with a close circle of collaborators, Evidence For Real reflects Shepherd's spiritual journey in the wake of his mother's passing, embodying his belief in music as a vehicle for healing and higher consciousness. South London's Jerkcurb -- aka Jacob Read -- is back with his sophomore album Night Fishing On A Calm Lake is to be released following 2019's Air Con Eden. After that album's successful release Read had planned to expand Jerkcurb into a full band setup when his father, a painter like himself and a creative inspiration, passed away. Instead of the envisioned plan of taking his project bigger Read returned to the family home and re-examined the material for the new album and instead the album became one of reflection, grief and redemption. It's not much of a stretch to see clear musical inspirations for the record too -- Prefab Sprout, Talk Talk and The Blue Nile, records where the moments of silence are stretched out. Read produced and engineered the album himself, mostly at home with Lara Laeverenz and Gray Rimmer providing vocals. The album is mixed by Dilip Harris (King Krule, Mount Kimbie). The enchanting cover artwork was painted at Read's father's studio in Camberwell, painted in oil with its dreamlike blur of blue and black. The first back in 1977 when the Sex Pistols took themselves up to Huddersfield to play a gig for the firemen but also as they arrived in the afternoon a gig for the local kids. The second Christmas Punk bonanza took place in London's Ladbroke Grove area when The Clash, possible inspired by the Sex Pistols previous Xmas gig, decided to play their own Xmas gig in 1979 on Christmas Day at The Acklam Hall. So there you have it the two biggest punk bands giving two xmas treats to their fans. To celebrate these festive treats Mal-One has written two songs to celebrate both events and dubbed up both versions for this Maxi-12" special.

Babau is the pantropical project of Artetetra founders Matteo Pennesi and Luigi Monteanni in which a fascination with exotica, world music 2.0 and field recordings meets the compositional and improvisational techniques of computer music. Lisbon-based duo Garoa -- formed by Brazilian musicians Raphael Soares (drums, percussion) and Henrique Dias (piano, synthesizer, guitar, percussion) -- craft an evocative soundscape that merges Afro-Brazilian rhythms with ambient textures. Their latest release, recorded in May 2024 at Est?dio Fetra, presents a free-flowing exploration where harmonies and rhythms unfold organically, avoiding rigid structures and embracing improvisation full time. Cintura Interna is Jo?o H?'s new release for Sucata Tapes, a work shaped by accident, drift, and unlikely connections. Its guiding notion comes from "M?sica Careca" (Bald Music) -- a strange term apparently used by Jean Dubuffet to describe his own sound experiments. Dubuffet wasn't a musician, but he was bald; the phrase lingers as an apt description for music that is na?ve without innocence: amateur bruitism, soft sound, raw and direct, where intention is left exposed to errancy. The piece itself came together without project or plan, eventually forming what H? calls an "accidental Frankenstein" -- or perhaps Frankenoise. Built from recordings made more than 15 years ago on cassette and obsolete equipment, mixed with more recent material, Cintura Interna bridges time and decay, refusing diaristic or documentary framing. As an unexpected detour, the release also includes a version of the garage classic "Louie Louie."

Three-part journey into an imaginary Amazon from three artists working on the fringes of Field recordings. Stories del Tibur?n Llor?n del Amazonas picks up where the previous, Stories of the Indian Dotted Whale trilogy left off. This time, the same three artists, Giovanni Lami, Hannibal Chew II aka Gon?alo F Cardoso and Bardo Todol aka Pablo Picco return to riff on an imaginary crying shark, known to swim in the amazon river. The sad and melancholic shark has never been seen but its weep and sob can be heard all over the region. Here are three works of sympathetic howls for a lonely and misunderstood creature. First part from Giovanni Lami is made of ghost recordings made during 2020 in Iquitos, Per?, in the amazon forest during the film shoot of Tras el Barco de Fitzcarraldo. Second part from Hannibal Chew II is a collection of re-assembled recordings and jams gathered from a trip through the Amazon in late 2017 to early 2018. Later assembled during various improvised recording sessions during the long hot summer of 2023 in Tenerife, Canary Islands. The third and final part comes from Bardo Todol and features abrasive tape and digital field recordings manipulation made by Picco in Iquitos in 2020 during the shooting of Tras el barco de Fitzcaraldo. All three feature sounds of: people talking, static radios, Saturday night churches, river people, shawi people, dolphin people, shark people, market people, vibrating insects, zombie insects, giant insects, giant motors and of course various weeps of a crying shark.

Talk Show is a new duo collaboration featuring Steph Richards on trumpets and resonating surfaces and Qasim Naqvi on drums, almglocken bells and modular synthesizer. Having worked together on other projects for almost two decades, Miss America, released by We Jazz Records, marks their first, pure duo collaboration -- a space to engage with a sonic language they've been cultivating together for years. The album was recorded live, with Qasim crafting real-time electronics and drum set work, and Steph using trumpets and resonating percussion to summon sympathetic vibrations and otherworldly sounds through timpani, snare and water. The trumpet sounds electronically processed, though every sound is acoustic. Both artists wanted to retain the live nature of their process, so what you hear is virtually untouched. Sharing an appetite for experimentalism, theatricality and irreverent collisions of sound and image, Qasim and Steph met in 2008 at CalArts- which was a breeding ground for open creative thought and cross-disciplinary collaboration. Often working with directors in the theater program, choreographers, or experimental and character animators, Steph and Qasim's musical language has a rooting in visual performance art. A Few We Remember is the new album by Jonah Parzen-Johnson and Lau Nau. The recording debut for the new duo of Finnish composer Lau Nau, aka Laura Naukkarinen, and American baritone saxophonist Jonah Parzen-Johnson, it cycles between moments of knotty ambience, whispered melody, and innocent tinkering, as the duo improvises over 8 narrative scores composed by Parzen-Johnson. Jonah Parzen-Johnson and Lau Nau are each prolific and celebrated creators on their own, with 22 albums released between the two of them, but in this fresh conversation, something completely new comes to life. In Laura's words: "I enjoy recording live takes without overdubs, and this album is exactly that -- pure first takes, bubbling creative energy happening in the moment. Jonah's written stories gave a powerful spark and direction for our improvisations, but the album reminds me of a chemical reaction: a result that is impossible without both of our inputs, and a surprise to each of us." On the debut single, First Time Viewer, it is almost impossible to tell where Jonah's fragile baritone saxophone melody begins and where Lau's live-sampled, processed, and re-synthesized accompaniment ends. As the improvisation develops, a cloud of ethereal fragments forms into a lattice of melody and texture strong enough to support the entire track.
