"Mark Morgan (formerly of Sightings and Silk Purse) and Gaute Granli first met in Brooklyn at The Glove in 2017 while Granli was on tour from his home country of Norway. The following year, Morgan embarked on a solo European tour and he and Granli did three shows together in Norway. Ultimately finding each other reasonably tolerable and able to agree to disagree on punk versus prog, they soon thereafter toured together in the fall of 2019 in Europe for 50 days with each playing solo. As the tour progressed, both found themselves influencing and being influenced by the other and by the end, they decided they should do a band together (easier to book one act rather than a package deal). Plans were made to reconvene in 2020 to record and possibly tour but then Covid threw a wrench into the works. A couple of years later, Rump State finally started playing and recording together in 2021 at Entropy Studio in Redford, Michigan (notably the childhood home of Ted Nugent who purportedly refers to it as 'Tedford'). Outside of agreeing that there should be a strong focus on duo vocals and that Morgan would play guitar and Granli electronics, not much else was discussed in advance of first playing together. From these sessions, their first LP Retaliation Aesthetics was cobbled together and eventually released on the Parisian No Lagos label in March 2023. Since then, Rump State has toured the USA once and Europe multiple times. Psychic Sidekick, Rump State's second album, is a jarring, dizzying (even!) collision; prior notions of song disassembly and aural properties being repossessed-then-sold-for-scrap were already due for reassessment. Morgan and Granli have rendered such arguments moot, and if you prefer 'discussion' to argument, congrats on being so (fucking) civilized. That's not gonna diminish this album's impact one iota."

Saxophonist and producer Ben Vince presents his sixth album, Street Druid, the first in almost six years via AD 93. Street Druid merges acoustic, manipulated, and electronic sound. It has saxophone, synth, voice, guitars and drum machine, and features drum kit from Moses Boyd. It features artwork by Byzantia Harlow. It is at once tender, psychedelic and fierce. It is not interested in genre or category, and lasts just under 45 minutes. Ben Vince is a striking composer and performer, known for his live improvised saxophone explorations and inventive techniques in creating new rhythms, textures and moods. Through live improvisation, sonic manipulation, reprocessing and looping, his spontaneous yet intuitive approach and collaborative nature surpasses the seeming limitations of his primary instrument. His energetic and immersive solo shows encapsulate an artist at the height of their powers and is now a prominent player among a new breed of experimental artists, as well as having performed with improv ritual EP/64, Charles Hayward, Coby Sey, Valentina Magaletti, and as part of experimental post-punk band Housewives. Formed in Southend in the late 90's, Beatglider's tale is a familiar one taking in early acclaim only for momentum and promise to be dashed by major label statis and indifference. After the release of the debut long-player, 40 Days Of Summer, in 1999 the band signed to Sony subsidiary Lakota and decamped to LA to record its follow-up, Dreaming Of Roads, an album that was never to see the light of day. And now, over 20 years later, Dreaming Of Roads eventually gets a deserved release via the Arlen label. A beautiful 11-track understated delight which musically falls somewhere between the likes of Elliott Smith, Grandaddy, Yo La Tengo and Sparklehorse, the album has not only stood the test of time, but arguably sounds as fresh as ever.

Repress. Following her debut album, I'll Look for You in Others (Past Inside the Present), Patricia Wolf joins Spain's Balmat label with See-Through, her second album. See-Through finds the Portland, Oregon musician and field recordist continuing to develop her signature style of ambient, balancing radiant soundscaping with a carefully expressive sensibility. But the album is also marked by an important difference. She wrote and recorded many of the album's songs quickly, in preparation for an August 2021 broadcast on the online radio platform 9128 Live. Excited for the opportunity to play live after more than a year of the pandemic, Wolf decided to write all new material for the event, working with a lean setup of Octatrack, Roland Synth Plus 10, Make Noise 0-Coast, and Novation Summit. She also picked up an acoustic guitar that her brother had loaned her. Though the tracks may linger on the heaviness of loss, Wolf says, "What I discovered is that a stronger archetype had grown inside me to steer my emotions and thoughts to a better place." "Wistfulness" and "Upward Swimming Fish" -- her first experiments with VST synthesizers -- balance the bittersweet embrace of melancholy with the freedom to choose happiness. "Pacific Coast Highway," the album's lone song with drums, might at first seem like an outlier. But it also signals Wolf's interest in finding a fusion between the introspection of ambient and the togetherness of beat-oriented music. "Experiencing loss and isolation is what drove me into gentler territories of sound," she says, "but I want to start making more beat-oriented music. After an extended period of loss and isolation, I'm ready to experience more joyous and social things." Listeners with keen ears might recognize the album's closing song, "Springtime in Croatia." This marks its first appearance on vinyl, and its spiritual home is undoubtedly here, at the close of See-Through. As the bookending answer to the opening "Woodland Encounter" -- another song in which field recordings play a crucial role -- it closes the circle of an album that is itself keyed to the steadily turning cycles of life.

Joseph Omicil, Jr, a.k.a. Jowee Omicil, is a Haitian-Canadian jazz musician. He has worked in the past with artists such as Roy Hargrove, Pharoah Sanders, Tony Allen, Kenny Garrett, Jacob Desvarieux, Glen Ballard, Harold Faustin, and Michel Martell. He hosted Quincy Jones' 85th birthday celebration at Montreux Festival. He also starred in the Netflix series The Eddy, produced by Damien Chazelle, and Le temps d'aimer, directed by Katell Quill?v?r? (Cannes Festival 2023). The Bois-Ca?man ceremony was Haiti's first major collective uprising against slavery. On his new album, SpiriTuaL HeaLinG: Bwa KaYimaN FreeDoM SuiTe, Jowee performs his ancestors' revolution in his own way. Jowee brought together all his inner tubes, soprano, alto, tenor, wood, clarinets, piccolo flute, cornet, that blows, that winds, that rumbles. This record is an incantation, a therapy, it cleanses the world by drawing on the fantasized memory of the Haitian revolution. There are "Freedom Suites" by Sonny Rollins, Max Roach, and others. Prayer music, music to break the chains in your head and on your wrists, music of black power and white magic. For Jowee, a kid from Montreal, son of a Haitian pastor, who sang Jesus in all the tones, and then Michael Jackson, and then 2Pac, who learned jazz from Ornette Coleman, the ceremony necessarily has the taste of free. This record is a healing hour-long improvisation.

2026 repress. Be With Records present a reissue of Sweet And Nice, the vital debut album from Jamaica's undisputed first lady of song Marica Griffiths, originally released in 1974. It's reggae at its most soulful. Slinking through a tight ten tracks of R&B and pop-sourced material, it became an instant best seller. Sweet And Nice has appeared over the years with a revised running order and under different titles. But the original's opening sequence of loping soul is legendary, even beyond reggae circles. These songs are now returned to how they were presented on that first Jamaican release, and under their intended album title. Be With doesn't mess with magic. Marcia's version of "Here I Am (Come and Take Me)" has long been lusted after, played by genre-hopping selectors to snapping necks for decades now. It's followed by the sophisticated, rollicking wah-wah funk of "Everything I Own" and the slice of smooth lovers soul par excellence that is "Green Grasshopper" and her ace, lilting Neil Diamond cover "Play Me". The thundering, humid funk of "Children At Play" "sounds uncannily like a precursor of Massive Attack", as FACT Mag astutely noted when they put Sweet And Nice at number 16 in their list of the 100 best albums of the 1970s. Otherworldly, moody, and essential. Side two keeps the fire burning. "Sweet, Bitter Love" should leave you swooning, and is also one of the album's alternate titles. Curtis Mayfield's already-eternal "Gypsy Man" follows, recast as proto-lovers rock. "There's No Me Without You" is elevated to canonical status by the majestic, forlorn horns of the Federal Soul Givers and Marcia's heartbreaking delivery. And if this doesn't get you then surely the next track will: arguably the definitive version of Ewan MacColl's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face". "I Just Don't Want To Be Lonely" re-takes its rightful place at the end of the LP's second side... but Be With Records added an entire second record of rare material recorded around the same time as Sweet And Nice, much of it unavailable since it was originally released. Amongst these 14 extra tracks you'll find the exquisite late-60s singles "Melody Life" and "Mark My Word" which, along with the sumptuous reading of "Band Of Gold". Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah was recorded in 1992 with Tim Green (Nation of Ulysses) at The Embassy - a group-house in Washington, D.C. - and was the first Bikini Kill release to feature the band's song, 'Rebel Girl.' Originally a split EP with the Brighton, UK-based band, Huggy Bear, the B-side now features seven previously unreleased Bikini Kill songs drawn from era-appropriate live shows and practice tapes. The artwork has also been updated to include archival photos and liner notes from the Bratmobile's Erin Smith, Comet Gain's David Feck, and the members of Bikini Kill. Bikini Kill was a feminist punk band based in Olympia, WA and Washington, D.C., forming in 1990 and breaking up in 1997. Kathleen Hanna sang, Tobi Vail played drums, Billy Karren (a.k.a. Billy Boredom) played guitar and Kathi Wilcox played bass. Bikini Kill is credited with instigating the Riot Grrrl movement in the early '90s via their political lyrics, zines, and confrontational live performances."

Tokyo Flashback is one of the most iconic compilations in the history of underground music. Originally released by Japan's P.S.F. Records, Tokyo Flashback defined the breathtakingly unique and previously obscured musical movement that had been developing in Japan since the late 1970s. The compilation features some of the earliest released recordings by Keiji Haino, High Rise, Masaki Batoh's Ghost, White Heaven, Fushitsusha, Kousokuya, and Marble Sheep. It captures the excitement and energy of a Tokyo awash in Technicolor and deep blacks; the music echoing krautrock, psychedelic freak-outs, garage, and no wave. A chance meeting in Mexico City set Points of Inaccessibility into motion. When Ibero-American composer Rafael Anton Irisarri crossed paths with Dutch media artist Jaco Schilp at MUTEK in 2024, a conversation about how technology shapes perception revealed an unexpected common ground. Schilp invited Irisarri to a spring 2025 residency at Uncloud, the Utrecht-based collective he co-founded, where Irisarri's sound began to take form amid an environment shaped by Schilp's visual research. The Uncloud studio was located inside the former Pieter Baan Centre, a forensic psychiatric prison where suspects of violent crimes were once confined. Its long history of silence and containment shaped the atmosphere in which the project developed. Within this setting, Irisarri coaxed long bowed-guitar tones through a network of pedals and looping systems. The raw gestures thickened into a vaporous and architectural field of sound. Schilp processed the material through a custom point-cloud software patch that produced images in continuous flux. The visuals flickered, dissolved and reformed like memories that resist coherence, functioning as a digital Rorschach that reflected the observer's own perception. Amid these spectral echoes, the project evolved into an examination of how the past persists within present signals. Irisarri improvised throughout the residency, generating material that allowed the visuals to develop in parallel. Once back in his New York studio, he began shaping the recordings by carving pathways through the improvisations and mapping selected passages into MIDI. This process allowed him to build outward from the bowed-guitar material with minimal overdubs, adding Prophet 5 textures, Moog bass and strings that expanded the harmonic field while keeping the original performances at the center. To refine the structure, Abul Mogard provided editorial input, working with Irisarri's stems to guide transitions and strengthen the overall pacing. What emerges is a work that examines the tension between technological systems and human presence. Points of Inaccessibility asks whether connection is still possible within environments shaped by mediation and delay, or whether we have become isolated points within the very networks that promise proximity. Pharoah Chromium is the project of German-Palestinian musician and sonic performer Ghazi Barakat. With Chronicles from the Arab Cold War, Pharoah Chromium continues his long-standing engagement with the Palestinian cause, following Gaza (LP, self-released 2015) and Jean Genet ? Chatila (7", self-released 2018). In the summer of 2023, new material began to take shape from a session with flutes, EWI (an analogue synth played like a wind instrument), and belly dancing beats. At first these were instrumentals, waiting for their context. That frame appeared unexpectedly, through the discovery of Chants R?volutionnaires d'Oman on the French label Expression Spontan?e -- a record that connected seamlessly with the material at hand. As you listen, Side A reveals its dedication to the children of Gaza. Without exploiting recordings from an ongoing genocide, the music instead channels hope through the voices of Omani children, offering a vision of resilience and possibility in the Middle East. Side B grows darker, more funerary, reflecting the escalation of the conflict after October 7. Trumpeter Philipp Selalmazidis, a recent collaborator, appears throughout these sessions, adding weight and urgency. Over time, the adolescent voices of the A side give way to adult voices, filling the space with anger and ideological rhetoric -- a stark progression from innocence to confrontation. The first ever official release by this legendary Melbourne post-punk band who only ever existed for a number of months in 1978, but who cast an important and influential light in Australian (and global!) music, influencing the likes of the Boys Next Door/Birthday Party and The Models, the group's membership and its diaspora reading like a who's-who of crucial Australian music of the past 50 years. In the band was a young Rowland S. Howard, who would soon go onto join the BND/Birthday Party; Ollie Olsen (Whirlywirld, No, Max Q, Dogs In Space soundtrack and so much more); Janine Hall (Saints; Weddings, Parties, Anything) and Jeffrey Wegener (drummer extraordinaire for the Laughing Clowns and the Saints, among others). The Young Charlatans recorded a demo with Ron Rude, and also surviving is a live recording from the Tiger Lounge in Richmond. With help from band manager Bruce Milne, Eminent Vinyl have sourced these two recordings to make up this LP, mixing the best of the both to document 45 minutes of inspired music as young players were still grappling with the fallout of punk rock, and wishing to push the music further into more experimental and adventurous directions. Savvas Christodoulou was born in Cyprus in 1949 and moved to Melbourne in 1950 as part of the great wave of Greek immigration following WW2. His story is long, involved and fascinating, and the liner notes and interview contained within the LP's four-page insert tells the whole story. Perhaps more briefly, what you need to know is that he released the Savvas studio LP in 1974 in an edition of 300 copies, and enjoyed such a strong local following that he sold out the 2,000-seat-capacity Dallas Brooks Hall two years later. The album has long been a collector's item for its unique and beguiling mix of Greek and Middle Eastern sounds, bouzouki jams, modal jazz and especially the cult synth-funk track "A Dream Of Zeus." Golden Debris was set to reissue the LP as it was, but surprisingly came across the original reels from the Dallas Brooks Hall show and decided that mixing the best of the studio and live material was a better option. Some of the live materials are tracks previously unreleased, like the cosmic synth wonder of "UFO," the quirky electronica of "Can You Remember" and the extended piece, "Space Dream," which slowly and beautifully evolves into a spacious, hypnotic jazz jam, and yes, there are three versions of "Zeus" here, the original studio version, reprise and live one, but they're all wildly different and all worth hearing. The four-page booklet is beautifully designed with exclusive photos and an extensive interview with Savvas telling his life story. The studio material features contributions from a young Nicholas Aitkin AKA Wilbur Wilde on saxophone, and Celeste Howden of Lygon Street punk rock and rollers, Stiletto, on bass. Muddy Waters was an ambitious young man who saw little future in Mississippi. In 1943, he headed for the bright lights, big city of Chicago, where he soon connected with blues giant Big Bill Broonzy, who began featuring Muddy as an opening act at his club dates. Within a year, Muddy had switched to electric guitar and formed his first blues combo, quickly becoming an established figure on Chicago's club scene. In 1947, Muddy came to the attention of the fledgling Aristocrat Records, just as Leonard Chess -- then running a nightclub called the Macomba Lounge -- invested in the company. Working frequently with pianist Sunnyland Slim, Muddy recorded a split session with him for Aristocrat in December 1947. This collection begins there: eight Aristocrat 78 rpm releases (sixteen sides), recorded between 1948 and 1950 and presented here in chronological order of release. Just three years later, Leonard and his brother Phil Chess would buy out Aristocrat's remaining partners and rename the label Chess Records -- ushering in a new era of Chicago blues that would reverberate around the world. "After playing complete improvised music with no constraints from 2016 on and releasing their first Album Torbid Dayligtht the quartet Gratkowski/Zoubek/Landfermann/Mahnig got renamed in 2023 to In Cahoots and now performs compositions by Frank Gratkowski, still with plenty of space for creative improvisation. In Cahoots also extends to a Quintet featuring Ingrid Laubrock on tenor and soprano saxophones. The new quintet version had its debut in Darmstadt 2023. Frank Gratkowski was born in Hamburg in 1963 and studied at the Cologne University of Music and Dance. He has extended his instrumental skills to include almost the entire spectrum of woodwind instruments, including flutes. He works intensively on tonal extensions and modifications of his instruments in solo projects and small formations using unorthodox playing techniques and microtonal concepts, some of which he has developed himself. Marconi studios. With him were drummers Jacques Thollot and Aldo Romano, bassist Jean-Fran?ois Jenny-Clark, and pianist Joachim K?hn. They hadn't rehearsed anything, as if entering the studio to record an album without any plan was something normal. The musicians were obviously very used to playing with each other, as the five tracks on Our Meanings And Our Feelings seem to flow perfectly without any hint of improvisation. The zokra, an oriental clarinet that Michel Portal plays on "Walking Through The Land" and "Dear Old Morocco" brings a singular touch to this album. This singularity is transcended by Joachim K?hn's ability to easily go from the piano to the saxophone alto, from supporting to soloing, before playing the bells, then the tambourine, opening the soundscape. Our Meanings And Our Feelings may not be the first French free jazz record -- as it was preceded by the fantastic Free Jazz by Fran?ois Tusques, released in 1965 and on which Michel Portal plays as well -- but it remains one of the most important. The legendary musical outfit Ibex Band (later metamorphosed into The Roha Band), has played a central role in defining the sound of many of the greatest stars on the music scene of Ethiopia from the mid-seventies onwards -- but their golden output has never really waned. The story of the origins of the band that provided the musical backbone for greats such as Aster Aweke, Girma Beyene, Tilahun Gessesse, backing the solo career of group member Mahmoud Ahmed as well as backing Mulatu Astatke and many others has yet to be properly told. Ibex emerged out of the ashes of the sixties group the Soul Echos band, adding Giovanni and Selamino to their ranks and taking their cues from a slew of influences, such as Motown and The Beatles, fused with traditional music. A tighter-knit unit than most bands at the time -- Ibex has remained six to seven members throughout their whole career, compared to many bands that were as large as fifteen or sixteen men strong when Ibex set out. The detailed history of Stereo Instrumental Music is in many ways unique. To begin with, it couldn't have been recorded earlier (there were no four-track recorders available) and it really couldn't have been recorded afterwards either, at least not in the years directly following, because of the toll the musical scene took from the unfavorable political climate that followed when the nascent Derg regime and rival groups tried to assert themselves, the musical equipment lent from The Voice of Gospel Radio simply disappeared from Ethiopia when the radio station folded in 1977. Whilst leaders might have professed to be revolutionary, the work ethic of the Ibex Band can truly be described as that. They never called it quits, but adapted, toured extensively abroad in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East, and found ways to work even in the face of the curfew that curtailed a lot of musical life. They even played major arenas in the nineteen eighties, despite said curfew and restrictions. The whole extent of their legacy has never been told, but their music speaks louder than words, so therefore -- tune in to the Ibex Band's Stereo Instrumental Music.

Gatefold. Tilaye Gebre is one of Ethiopia's most soulful saxophone giants, with a musical legacy that's hard to surpass. A founding member of the Equators, later renamed the Dahlak Band, he was a key figure in Ethiopia's vibrant hotel music scene and a sought-after musician and arranger for artists like Aster Aweke, Mahmoud Ahmed, Tilahun Gessesse, and Muluken Melesse. In the quiet storm of Ethiopian music in the mid- to late-1970s, Tilaye Gebre was some-thing of the eye at the center. Even though much of the music from that period has been ridiculously hard to excavate from history, chances are that if you pick up any gem recorded in Addis Ababa during those times, it features Tilaye on saxophone and his arrangements. Tilaye was a central figure in Ethiopia's vibrant hotel music scene, where creativity and innovation flourished. He later joined the legendary Walias Band, with whom he toured extensively across the United States. It was during one of these tours that Tilaye made the pivotal decision to remain in the U.S. and further develop his musical craft. His artistry has since taken him around the world, with performances in major cities across Europe, Canada, and the Virgin Islands. From the late sixties onwards, Dahlak Band lit up Addis Ababa with a mixture of James Brown and Wilson Pickett tunes, rhythm and blues, soul, funk, and the sound of the disco era -- mixed with modern Ethiopian styles -- serving up majestic concoctions with full-range instrumentation, featuring trumpet, keyboard, saxophone, bass, drums, and guitar. Through their hotel sessions, Tilaye developed further as an arranger, arranging fellow band member Muluken Melesse's first solo album, Muluken Melesse with the Dahlak Band, recorded during the turbulent years of 1975-1976, following the fall of Haile Selassie. Some of the Dahlak Band's releases featured Tilaye as frontman, such as Tilaye's Saxophone with the Dahlak Band from the late 1970s -- typical of a rare groove on the Ethiopian scene -- with excursions into reggae territory, including the band's characteristic sound featuring Tilaye Gebre (tenor and alto saxophone), Dawit Yifru (organ), David Kassa (electric guitar), Shimelis Beyene (trumpet), Moges Habte (tenor saxophone), Abera Feyissa (bass guitar), Tesfaye Tessema (drums), and Muluken Melesse (cowbell). The Dahlak Band's output was so prodigious that they simply couldn't be pigeonholed.

"Al Manfredi is the father of hip-hop producer Exile, and Blue Gold is his little-known West Coast rock masterpiece from 1973. Manfredi's dreams of securing a record deal with this album faded, but he spent the rest of his life recording music. This version of the album was overseen by Exile. Born into a musical family Al Manfredi started writing songs when he was child. As a teenager in 1965, he formed the Nuts & Bolts in the small beach town of San Clemente, California. Inspired by the Kinks, the Beatles and the Byrds, the group separated themselves from the pack by also performing original material written by Manfredi and band mate Mike Ingram. In late 1966 they changed their name to the Lost & Found and relocated to Phoenix, Arizona, where they cut a rare single, 'Don't Move Girl' b/w 'To Catch the Sun,' which now commands high coin from '60s garage collectors. When they returned to San Clemente in early 1967 their music had taken a more psychedelic direction. The Lost & Found were riding high that year, until tragedy struck. Ingram was found hanged under suspicious circumstances and soon after Lost & Found drummer Mike Ryer died of cancer at the age of 19. Heartbroken, Manfredi gave up on the band scene completely and moved to Garden Grove to teach at his family's music store. But alone, behind closed doors, he kept writing songs and working on his music, recording hours of tapes, often tracking all the instruments himself. In 1973 he chose six of his best songs, some of them written back in the Lost & Found days, and had them custom-pressed as an LP. Only a handful of copies were pressed, and most of these were sent out to various record companies in the hope of landing a deal. Despite the outstanding quality of the music, there were no takers. But decades later, collectors discovered the Al Manfredi album and hailed it a West Coast rock masterpiece. This little-known West Coast rock masterpiece was rediscovered and celebrated by Acid Archives founder Patrick Lundborg and others around the time that Manfredi died in 1995. This version of the album, overseen by Manfredi's son Exile, and with Manfredi's story told by Ugly Things' founder Mike Stax, presents the complete package of an incredible lost and found artist. Pomegranates -- Nicol?s Jaar's unofficial/alternative soundtrack to Sergei Parajanov's 1969 film The Color of Pomegranates -- was first released in 2015, and to highlight the 10-year anniversary Other People is reissuing the album on vinyl, with the first edition (a collaboration with the label Mana) having long been out of print. Longer and slower-releasing than his other albums, Pomegranates often parallels the cinematic epic on which it's based, with ideas pursued over long timelines and across dark landscapes, assembling elements and moods from the aesthetic and folkloric landscapes of Armenia. Jaar's identity is perceived within this, folding in his heritage as Palestinian and Chilean as he attempts to build a musical architecture outwards that frames as much of the mess and sprawl of life as possible; using a language that investigates the movement and fluctuation of his own artistic career and character similarly to the film's tracing of the coming of age of the young poet, Sayat-Nova. At times, Pomegranates feels profoundly intimate, as though looking through the archive of a friend's music and discovering the accent and common currency that lives within each of these tracks. Much of Jaar's most elegant and touching melodic work is nestled here, its power residing in its simplicity and willingness to speak to the heart and not the mind of the listener. In the text document included in the first freely distributed version of the album in 2015, Jaar writes that the album was conceived during a moment of change, and that the pomegranate became an icon that heralded that passage of time. The physical publication of Pomegranates closes one door whilst opening another, keeping promises and marking a significant point in the career of an artist who restlessly reinvents himself, with a document that illustrates a common language of lyricism, freedom, and emotional resonance linking his many paths and projects.

Across an extensive suite of enchanting miniatures, Matthias Kremsreiter and Christian Schoppik present the hypnagogic vision of Taghelle Nacht. Recording under their respective Roudi Vagou and L?uten der Seele aliases, Kremsreiter and Schoppik combine their distinct but equally accomplished instrumental practices into a new collaboration that weaves swooning samples amongst instrumental passages. They lead listeners through 16 vignettes that revel in the cognitive dissonance and seductive magic of moonlight at midnight. Both artists have past form within the folds of contemporary experimental electronic music in Germany. Kremsreiter's work as alibikonkret has manifested on DIY tape releases created with a methodical, technically-minded approach. Debuting his Roudi Vagou pseudonym on Taghelle Nacht, he pivots to a more playful, instinctively felt method that allows the compositions to flow with a natural cadence. Schoppik has been a key figure in the celebrated dark-ambient-folk scene, not least as part of the group Brannten Schn?re. His work as L?uten der Seele includes the acclaimed "water trilogy" of LPs between 2022 and 2024, with a greater emphasis on instrumental, atmospheric production, and a last, stunning collaborative album with Nov? Sv?t's Jota Solo. On Taghelle Nacht the precise ingredients of each piece soften at the edges as tape loops and swathes of reverb seal the joints between spellbinding melodic refrains. At every turn a new scene is painted, distinct from the last and yet all bound up in the pervasive, pale blue light cast over the sleeping landscape Kremsreiter and Schoppik have sculpted. Snatches of song drift by like dreamlike fragments, and achingly tender flourishes fleetingly appear and retreat -- ideas and expressions momentarily caught in the light before retreating into the shadows once more. This is the evocative world of Taghelle Nacht -- an unsettling depiction of the surreal blend of memories and imagination that merge into each other once the sun goes down.

Berlin-based composer and vocalist FRANKIE, also known as Franziska Aigner, and Dominican-American producer Kelman Duran meet at the Twelve Apostles Church, in the Berlin district of Sch?neberg, sometime in 2022, at the beginning of the spring season. They were each asked to engage the space's solemnity, and its reverence, through distinct performances. Their chance encounter, abounding with mutual curiosity towards each other's practices, smoothened the path for a years-long collaboration, culminating in McArthur, their first joint album. Following a period of exchanging musical fragments and prompts at a distance, Aigner and Duran come together in Athens, and later in Los Angeles, to prepare the stuff and material for the album, slowly developing a body of work informed by shared hauntings, and a commitment towards the disjointed and the residual. The result is an album where time and geography are made elastic, and where sonic improvisations become a site for quiet, and cryptic, articulations of intimacy. Throughout the album, there is a double process at play -- that of solitary work on the one hand, and of collective weeding out on the other. "BWV 639" is a reworking of a Bach cantata, the time signature of which Aigner stretches towards a new composition. Pianist Iris Moldiz recorded the part in Salzburg's Mozarteum, dislodging the classical canon into eerie territory. "Techno 127 BPM" invites Aigner's searing cello lines to unfurl over, and carve itself a space within, a skeletal techno beat. "McArthur" anchors a wandering trumpet solo by Zhang Hungtai against a deep bassline. Produced by Duran in Warp Studio, which overlooks McArthur Park in Los Angeles, the piece is an attempt at sketching a horizon of convergence, and of possibility. There is, across McArthur, a stubborn, if not militant, refusal to arrive at completeness, and an insistence on finding potentiality in the thresholds. If unknowability and the fear of extinction appear to rule our present conjuncture, then an accompanying soundtrack worthy of its name should express a determined engagement with, and a generous attunement to, the contradictions at play.

Hidden Spheres is a Rhythm Section mainstay for a reason: having released three EPs on the label, he has developed his sound and fully emerged into a flow state. Soft Echoes presents the first physical edition of In a Few Places Along the River by Abul Mogard as a limited run of 500 vinyl copies. Originally released digitally in 2022, the album now appears in its intended form, marking the label's second release. Three long pieces, composed between 2019 and 2022, emerged from Mogard's meticulous experimentation with analogue and digital instruments. Slowly evolving harmonic fields of layered drones and spectral textures drift across the record. They are enhanced by reverb from Scotland's Inchindown oil tanks, which hold the longest reverberation of any man-made structure, giving the music a haunting resonance and a sense of suspended space. "Against a White Cloud" and "In True Contemplation" open the album with their nocturnal tones that gradually intensify into dense, immersive waves of sound. Side B is devoted to the 21-minute elegiacal piece "Along the River," which flows between weight and silence, unfolding with reflective depth and moments of subtle transcendence. "Recording for this album began in 2019, when I was still living in London," Mogard explains. "The first version of 'Along the River' was created at my studio near Brick Lane. It started with experimenting around a chord progression inspired by a classical piece I had once been recommended, though, strangely enough, I no longer recall what it was. Early in 2022, I revealed the identity behind Abul Mogard and wanted to mark this new period, so I decided to release it quickly, by myself, as digital-only." After returning to Rome, Mogard created the other two pieces, working with new digital instruments alongside his modular synthesizer, and integrated recordings from the London sessions. The music reveals a patient attention to texture and space, defining his usual restraint. Described by critics as one of Mogard's most melancholic and absorbing releases, the album maintains an austere beauty and contemplative weight, leaving a lingering impression that lasts far beyond the final note. The music has extended beyond the album itself, with tracks appearing in films and contemporary artworks. Most notably, Swedish artist Peder Bjurman's "Slow Walker" audiovisual installation and French filmmaker Fleuryfontaine's politically charged animated film Soixante-sept millisecondes. Mats Gustafsson met Jan St. Werner in Berlin when they both performed with Peter Br?tzmann and a group of prolific improvisers. Mats and Jan share a passion for performing not just inside rooms but also with them, activating space and shaping sound via diversion. Mats introduces Johan Berthling who adds complex bass structures to the nervous jitter of Mats' saxophone and pedals and Werner's digital machinery. Originally released on the Black Eye label in 1988, Paddock Of Love was the Sydney band's second LP and the first to really feature a more stable line-up, which included Guy Maddison (future Mudhoney bassist), Nick Barker (future pop star!), Peter Hartley and, of course, the man who drove the engine, Stu Spasm. Around the time of its release, the band were invited to play on Andrew Denton's nationally-televised TV show on the ABC, Blah Blah Blah, and played the opening barnstormer, "In The Raw," fully nude, causing an uproar in the tabloids. It was a fun time to be alive, and shot the band into the national consciousness of confected outrage for a few weeks. What's more important is this recording, which is a glorious collection of scungey 'n' grungey rock 'n' roll degeneracy in the finest sense of such words. It is filled with killer tracks like "Funeral On A Spit", "Gargoyles" and "Cannibal's Lament", sounding focused, purposeful and like a real BAND. Paddock Of Love has been out of circulation for 30+ years, and in this edition, Sorcerer also include a huge foldout poster with a reproduction of the cover on one side, and lyrics and new liner notes from Stu on the other side, as well as outraged articles from the time, press clippings, etc. The cover shown here is the Censored Version (spot the difference!), so that it can stay on the internet and not get taken down, though the real product is the real, uncensored deal.

When I moved to Oakland in 1999 I discovered the work of Karen Stackpole, one of the few percussionists in the world specializing entirely in gongs, and attended several of her performances. I always tried to imagine how I could combine my own sonic vocabulary with her incredibly rich array, and we enthusiastically agreed to a musical meeting which somehow kept being postponed, year after year. These recordings are among his most precious ones. Grand Piano Gebr?der Stingl from 1916. The year is 2021. The piano is in the garden; the sun shines on it and rain falls on it. The piano cannot be tuned. Some keys work only partially, some not at all. It is Broken Piano. The first pieces for Broken Piano were recorded on this piano in 2021 and became part of the Fluxus editions Stolen Symphony (2023) and Keep Together (2024). The pieces for this edition were written and provided by Terry Riley and Milan Kn?z?k. "Broken Piano," which was acquired by the Opening Performance Orchestra to make live and studio recordings, was the focus of both volumes of this edition between 2021 and 2023. Compositions for Broken Piano intended for Fluxus editions were recorded by Czech pianist Miroslav Beinhauer. During this time, other new works for Broken Piano were written by a variety of Fluxus and non-Fluxus composers. In the spring of 2022, the Opening Performance Orchestra and Broken Piano participated in an event hosted by Mieko Shiomi. This was a new version of her early work "Spatial Poem": it was a moving event, documentation of which was presented at the Aichi Triennale 2022 in Tokyo. During this performative event, consisting of moving any object, Broken Piano was moved from the village Vyzlovka to Unhost, where the SONO music studio is located. It is in the SONO studio that the new compositions for Broken Piano were recorded, written by Terry Riley, Philip Glass, Milan Kn?z?k, Gordon Monahan, Elliot Sharp, Milan Gustar, and Yoon-Ji Lee, which form the content of this album. All the new compositions were recorded by pianist Miroslav Beinhauer.

The album shares its title with Daumal's novel, Mount Analogue: A Novel of Symbolically Authentic Non-Euclidean Adventures in Mountain Climbing, published posthumously in 1952, eight years after the author's untimely death. Mount Analogue is a classic allegorical adventure novel. The novel describes an expedition undertaken by a group of mountaineers to travel to and climb the titular Mount Analogue an enormous mountain on a surreal continent, that is invisible and inaccessible to the outside world and can be perceived only by the application of obscure knowledge. The central theme of mountaineering is extensively explored through literary and philosophical lenses. Daumal died before the novel was completed, providing an uncanny one-way quality to the story, which ends abruptly in the middle of a sentence. The first disc features a fifty-minute composition divided into six chapters: "Introduction," "Meeting," "Supposition," "Crossing," "Arrival," and "Conclusion." This album weaves together a rich tapestry of diverse instruments, sounds, and voices that collectively tell the story of this conceptual work, loaded with a synesthetic multitude of colors, aromas, meanings, textures, and moods. The second disc presents five improvisations for solo electric guitar by Henry Kaiser. The first solo, Jodorowsky's "Peradam," draws its inspiration from Alejandro Jodorowsky's 1973 film The Holy Mountain, which was inspired by the Daumal novel. Kaiser's initial forty-eight-minute guitar solo serves as a foundational guide for his four subsequent, Rashomon-esque, solo musical interpretations of Mount Analogue, as seen through the psychedelic labyrinth of Jorodrowsky's cinematic masterpiece. 2026 repress! West Virginia Snake Handler Revival "They Shall Take Up Serpents" marks the arrival of a landmark record, documenting the last, snake handling church in Appalachia. Featuring hillbilly rock guitars, trance-like rhythms, and howling vocals, this album was recorded 100% live and without overdubs by Grammy-award winning producer and author, Ian Brennan (Tinariwen, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Zomba Prison Project). The first release of American music ever by Sublime Frequencies, Brennan states, "As much as I've traveled around the globe to remote areas such as Comoros, the southeast Sahara or up-river in Suriname, few places have felt more foreign or 'exotic' than this part of Appalachia. The recording represents in many ways a companion and counterpoint -- the other side of the Deep South, so to speak -- to the music that was explored on the Parchman Prison Prayer albums. The Snake Handler album was an attempt to listen across that divide -- a divide that's never fully healed and continues to haunt and imperil the USA to this day." The recording took place during a two-plus hour Sunday service in the West Virginia mountains. Brennan states, "I'd sworn to stay far away from the snakes at the service, but instead they were waved in my face as they coiled in the preachers' hands, and I crouched down at the foot of the altar tending to the equipment. The pastor soon was bitten and blood splattered, pooling on the floor. The female parishioners hurriedly came to wipe up the mess, and it instantly became clear just what the rolls of paper towels stacked on the pulpit had been for. You can actually hear this moment transpire towards the end of the track 'Don't Worry It's Just a Snakebite (What Has Happened to This Generation?)'. The congregation leapt to its feet and a mini mosh-pit formed. The tag-team preachers huffed handkerchiefs soaked in strychnine, as they circled like aggro frontmen and an elderly worshiper held the flame of a candle to her throat, closing her eyes and swaying. The church PA blew out from the screams as a bonnet-wearing senior whacked away at a trap kit that dwarfed her. It was the most metal thing I'd ever seen, rendering Slayer mere kids play." The flock claim to be the first church that merged Rock and Roll with firebrand preaching -- that the music was stolen from them by Satan, that they are the originators. Given that snake handling ministries can be traced back to at least 1910, there might even be a faint something to the claim. The pastor's father and brother both died after being bitten by timber rattlesnakes, and the pastor himself suffered greatly from one a few years back -- his forearm swelling to twice its size and turning slime green. As a result, he fell unconscious and his forearm had to be sliced open from wrist to bicep to relieve the pressure. Nonetheless, Pastor Chris steadfastly claims that "Jesus is our anti-venom." "Some people think we're Devil worshippers, that we're a cult. But snake handling is only a small part of what we do." In the 1970s there were reportedly five-hundred snake churches throughout Appalachia, but now there is only one -- in West Virginia, the only state where serpent handling remains legal. It's estimated that in the past century more than one-hundred preachers have died from poisonous snakebites inflicted while leading these services. This includes the founder of the first snake handling flock, George Went Hensley, who was illiterate and once convicted of selling moonshine during the Prohibition era. His death was officially ruled a suicide due to his refusing medical treatment. The local county's population has dropped by more than 80% in the wake of the West Virginia coal industry's globalization gutting, and the area now leads the USA in drug-related deaths per capita while also being the poorest in the state. Within minutes of launching into trance-like states during the service featured on this album, both preachers became drenched in sweat. More than strict scripture, the preachers are gifted improvisers able to vent for hours at a time. Brennan states, "Pastor Chris joked, 'You definitely don't want to hear me sing.' But, in fact, he is a gifted vocalist with singular phrasing." Like so much of the most classic music ever made, it sounds as if it is emanating from the past and the future simultaneously -- some parallel universe where instead of discovering amphetamines, The Damned found God (or maybe both) and became born again. The vinyl edition includes a long 13-minute bonus track and features a four-page booklet sporting stunning photos of the congregation's rituals in action.

'Luciano Cilio was born in Naples, Italy, in 1950. He studied music and architecture and, in the late '60s, collaborated with local artist Alan Sorrenti, American expat Shawn Phillips and various avant-garde theater groups. A virtuoso guitarist and self-taught composer, Cilio released only one LP before his untimely death at the age of 33. Dialoghi Del Presente (1977) is a work like no other, one that sounds both ancient and ahead of its time. Produced by Renato Marengo, it features a series of muted tableaux for strings, woodwinds, guitar, chorus, piano and percussion. Cilio carves out a space where subtle, repetitive phrases yield -- almost imperceptibly -- to breathtaking silence. "Julius Hemphill's debut record, 1972's Dogon A.D., was self-produced for his Mbari imprint, and it was issued with a beautiful black-and-white cover. Very DIY. The label's name writ large along the bottom edge, like it was the band's name. It's a quartet record featuring Hemphill on alto and flute, with Baikida Carroll on trumpet, Abdul Wadud on cello, and Phillip Wilson on drums -- a classic jazz front line/rhythm section format, but nothing conventional about the way the music sounds. The long track -- from where the LP takes its title -- is one of the key epic statements of new jazz in the era. Among its remarkable distinctions, it manages to draw on Wilson's schizoid experience having been a member of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and the first drummer for the Art Ensemble of Chicago, in making an 11/8 rhythm into a staggeringly funky thing of joy. Over the course of fourteen and a half minutes, Hemphill builds a nearly continuous solo, his spiritual blood brother Wadud sawing the cello with a deep blues soulfulness that is raw and mantra-like in its repetitive incantation. It feels right and wrong in equal measure, the theme carrying its own piquancy with honked barnyard dissonances and some contrary motion between the horns and string. "In the pantheon of classic free jazz, Noah Howard's The Black Ark looms large. Recorded at Bell Sound Studios in New York City in 1969 -- just prior to the alto saxophonist's relocation to Europe -- the album was eventually released in 1972. The Black Ark exhibits not only the power and imagination of Howard's playing, but also his breadth as a composer and bandleader. Listeners expecting unrelenting blasts of 'energy music' might be surprised to find a cohesion atypical of free jazz; amidst the wild, impassioned solos, Howard weaves in Latin rhythms and fat-bottomed grooves. The first side, consisting of 'Domiabra' and 'Ole Negro,' sets the album's tone. Both tracks sound as if they could have appeared on some of Blue Note's proto-spiritual jazz, groove-heavy releases -- evoking the likes of Horace Silver or Bobby Hutcherson -- before ceding the floor to the horn players' anarchic firepower. Trumpeter Earl Cross' guttural, vocal effects complement Doyle's take-no-prisoners approach, while the estimable combination of Muhammad Ali (Rashied's brother) on drums and Juma Sultan on congas adds an ever-shifting propulsion. The septet is rounded out by the enigmatic pianist Leslie Waldron, who anchors the group with imaginative accompaniment and occasional boppish flourishes. Every bit worthy of its reputation as an 'out-jazz' holy grail, The Black Ark only sounds better with age. It remains the ideal record to convert the remaining free-jazz skeptics."

As the label turns 35 years, Tresor Records' ongoing reissue series comes round to Scan 7's 1999 album, Resurfaced. A true exemplar in the canon of Detroit techno, the LP is a further reminder of Scan 7's confidence to patiently let the music unfold, never needing to overplay their hand. This is demonstrated from the first second as "Random Soul" opens with a slow downbeat and soft, almost imperceptible synths before quickly settling into a perfect groove whose power is present without the need for a hard edge. This strategy is utilized throughout the album in tracks like "Black Wall" and "Unit," while "Invisible Invasion" and "Twisted Groov" add in some intensity for deeper moments in the club. Remastered by Mike Grinser from the original DATs, the double vinyl features the original eight tracks from the album.

It is in the inspiring calm of his brand-new studio in Bagnolet that Etienne Jaumet found the material for Du cortex ? l'iris, his new album recorded for his label Versatile Records. Du cortex ? l'iris continues the delicate balance that defines Jaumet's signature: a constant tension between hypnotic abstraction and an almost animal groove. "To reduce the distance between my cortex and my senses, in order to compose mental images with sounds," he says. This intention runs through the entire album: a desire to make people dance, yes, but with echoes of EBM, bursts of cinematic landscapes, and that singular way of slowly inducing trance rather than declaring it. Saxophone, synths, analog drum machines: the arsenal remains familiar, but the approach is even more direct. Playing fast, composing in the moment, letting the hand run before the mind corrects. Capturing something primal, spontaneous, almost raw -- as if the sound were really passing, this time, directly from the cortex to the iris.

Bill was a musician, band manager, record label owner, police officer, rodeo bull rider, an attention-seeking recluse, and the ultimate fan-boy. He led an exceedingly compartmentalized life, keeping a tight lid on his background, his occupations, relationships and sexuality, hiding the jarring conflicts from everyone. The whole of his life was an enigma and maintaining it took a toll. From forming his band White Flag in the early 1980s to starting his own record company (Gasatanka Records), Bill was relentless. His ability to side up to his idols (from original LA Punk Scene to arena Metal) was astonishing, as was his indelible influence on his heroes. This monumental new suite Strata, Act (Joy Contemporary) released by We Jazz Records includes music recorded live in London and Zurich in summer 2023. Five tracks in total. complex, iterative whole that makes ideas live -- back into tradition/s and out, on, into an infinite future. In 2018 the trio recorded a remarkable 80-minute tribute to the late Cecil Taylor "Akisakila"/Attitudes of Preparation (Mountains, Oceans, Trees) vigorously re-visiting his 1973 Tokyo trio Akisakila recording. Re-convening five years later to celebrate that release they imagined a-new, expanding that attitude to history through connected lenses of the traditions of British electro-acoustic-mystery: from the live electronics of Tony Oxley's February Papers or Howard Riley's Synopsis, to Leviticus' Burial and Splash's Babylon, plus of course Derek Bailey's Domestic Jungle, and now up to their overlapping global-temporal experiments with, between them, Mark Fell, Anne Gills and RPBoo. Captured at London's Cafe OTO, the LP hears Thomas and XT expand their acoustic trio each with liquid (dry and wet) electronics, as real and imagined instrumentation. There are sounds of keys, sticks, reeds, pedals, (i)pads, plug-ins, body and breath and their potentials. There is also the unique energy, space and feel of OTO a sui generis ecology in which all three musicians have worked and learned since its doors opened in 2008. The 2CD takes its sub-title from the great drummer, and live electrician, Tony Oxley (also on playing with Cecil). Here the music grows across two nights (one per disc), synthetic, bionic expanding, evaporating, electric, charging through time in ways that renders "genre" indistinguishable, irrelevant and even impossible. This set is a multi-format document of some of the most adventurous, rare (and radical) creative musicians working today. Electronic-and-acoustic, real and imaginary, sounds, times, scales and proportions that extends out of and collapses into musical space in dialogue with past and future.

2026 restock; Wewantsounds present a reissue of Ziad Rahbani's cult album, Bennesbeh Labokra...Chou? released in Lebanon only and mixing Arabic music with jazz, bossa nova, and other western influences. Curated by Lebanese-born music expert Mario Choueiry from Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, the album is reissued on vinyl for the first time since 1978. When Ziad Rahbani released Bennesbeh Labokra... Chou? he was only 22 years old. He had started to make an impression on the Lebanese cultural scene a few years before, while still a teenager, composing and releasing albums under his own name. Born into an illustrious musical family -- his mother is the legendary Lebanese Diva Fairuz and his father, Assi Rahbani, was a renowned composer and part of one of the most famous Lebanese groups, The Rahbani Brothers -- Ziad quickly gained exposure as a gifted composer and producer. When his father fell ill in the mid '70s, he took over as Fairuz's producer which led to a fruitful collaboration starting with the 1979 album Wahdon. Highly influenced by other genres of music, Rahbani had started bringing modern western influences to traditional Arabic music. 1978 saw the release of two key albums by the young musician, the disco 12" Abu Ali which went on to become one of the most sought-after Arabic albums on the international DJ scene and Bennesbeh Labokra... Chou?. A soundtrack to Rahbani's eponymous play, the album gathers all the musical interludes heard during the play, a social diatribe about the Beirut society underlining the difficulties of living in the tense social and political climate of the Lebanese civil war. Written by and starring Rahbani, the play follows the everyday life and problems of a young couple running a cafe in the heart of Beirut. The play underlying Rahbani's leftist sensitivity was an immense success and the album was released the same year (the complete play was also released over three LPs). Bennesbeh Labokra... Chou? is a skillful blend of Arabic music and bossa nova, groove with funky beats, and jazz. It's interesting to hear an early version of "Al Bosta" which would grace Fairuz's 1979 album Wahdon in a faster, funkier version. With a knack for cinematic orchestrations reminiscent of Lalo Schifrin, Rahbani also brings more complex arrangements to the album. Gatefold sleeve. Remastered audio. The first ever international release of Ryuichi Sakamoto's landmark 1984 album Ongaku Zukan, originally issued in Japan on his own School label in 1984. Remastered by Saidera Mastering in Tokyo. The early '80s were a turning point for Japanese musician Ryuichi Sakamoto. As a solo artist, the smash hit soundtrack he had composed for 1983's Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, had put him on the verge of becoming a global superstar. Meanwhile he had called a halt to his work with Yellow Magic Orchestra; the influential, globally successful pop trio calling it quits after the release of their 1983 album Naughty Boys. Against this backdrop, Sakamoto descended on Tokyo's Onkyo Haus Studio to record his fourth solo album, Ongaku Zukan ("Musical Encyclopedia") accompanied by a handful of musicians including his ex-YMO partners Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi, and the prolifically talented Yasuaki Shimizu, Tatsuro Yamashita and Toshinori Kondo. It was on his return to the studio the following year that the album truly began to take shape. Released in August 1984 the album Ongaku Zukan proved a huge success, providing Sakamoto with his first top five hit in Japan. Filled with inspired melodies that showcase his unique gift as a composer, it offers up a fascinating mix of styles. Featuring remastered audio with bonus tracks and new liner notes by Andy Beta. This is the very first time that the two 1984 Japanese editions of Ryuichi Sakamoto's classic album have been released internationally in collaboration with the artist's management and Midi Inc., with remastered audio and the original artwork faithfully reproduced.

Inspired by the traditional Japanese poetic form of linked verses, Renga unfolds as a fluid ten-track journey spanning ambient, jazz, breakbeats, electronica, environmental music, techno, cinematic, library music, and musique concr?te. Beats appear, disappear, then reassemble, while textures shift between organic warmth and electronic abstraction.
